We have the numbers for the PGA Tour I t’s the first time in years that New Zealand has had three players on the world’s richest golf circuit, the PGA Tour. Quantity is no substitute for quality but let’s hope any of the trio of Danny Lee, Tim Wilkinson and Steve Alker can fly the flag high for New Zealand in 2015. The three players provide an interesting mix of youth, experience and steadiness. Youth belongs to Lee at age 24. He is also clearly the one with the most potential. Lee capped a highly successful amateur career with victory in the United States Amateur Championship in 2008. At the time he was the youngest winner of the event at 18 years and one month but that record was broken the following year by a 17-year-old. In 2009 Lee won an European Tour event when taking out the Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth while still an amateur. Lee’s best finish on the PGA Tour is sec-
ond. That came in the Puerto Rico Open in the Carribean last March when he picked up $US378,000 for his efforts. It would seem a matter of time before he wins on the PGA Tour. The player with the most experience is Alker. He is aged 43 and has been a professional golfer since 1995. He has won four times on the Web.com Tour, which is the feeder circuit to the PGA Tour. Alker’s most dramatic win came this year in the Cleveland Open in the mid-western US state of Ohio in a playoff that lasted a staggering 11 holes. It was the longest playoff in the history of the Web.com Tour, or its equivalent, and equalled the longest on the PGA Tour which was set in 1949. Alker topped the Canadian Tour order of merit in 2000, he played on the PGA Tour in 2003 and his wins in this part of the world include the 2009 New Zealand
PGA Championship. Wilkinson is the steady as you go man. The 36-year-old made his debut on the PGA Tour in 2008 when he included a second and a third and earned more than $US1 million. This year he won $US800,000 with three top10 finishes. We have nobody on the European Tour which is a disappointment but most of our attention in the new year will again focus on Lydia Ko – and a perfect example of quality beats quantity. She has been outstanding in her first season on the LPGA Tour, the world’s premier golf circuit for women. She won three times on the tour, earned nearly $US2.1 million in tournament prizemoney and picked up an additional $US1 million by topping the tour’s order of merit. That made for a total of nearly $US3.1 million or $NZ3.9 million.

A year to remember for Ryan Chisnall
I
t’s been a great year for Nelson golfer Ryan Chisnall. The 20-year-old from the Greenacres Golf Club led all the way to win the South Island Championship at Dunedin in March. In September he was the leading amateur at the Carrus Open in Tauranga and more recently he gained a win on New Zealand’s Charles Tour when taking out the Harewood Open in Christchurch. A few weeks later Chisnall represented New Zealand at the Juan Carlos Talihade Cup in Argentina and finished a creditable sixth. The Harewood Open, sponsored by John Jones Steel, saw Chisnall stage an excellent final round to snatch victory. He began the final day five shots back from overnight leader Daniel Pearce but fired a four-under par 68 to win by one. Second was Manawatu amateur Lachie McDonald, who had the second-best round of the day to score 67, while third was Wellington professional Harry Bateman. Chisnall said he was “stoked” at the win. “It means a huge amount,” he said. “It is obviously my biggest win. The biggest thing for me was putting myself in situations where I was under the pump. I did it at Tauranga and I wanted to do it again here.” Chisnall became only the sixth amateur to win on the Charles Tour following Josh

Geary, Troy Ropiha, Ben Campbell, Joshua Munn (twice) and Fraser Wilkin in the history of the series that dates back to 2006. He is the second amateur to win the Harewood title after Manawatu golfer Munn won the inaugural event wire-towire in 2012. Chisnall got his final round off to the perfect start on the par five first when he holed his third shot from the rough from 108m away. “I had a mint lie, I could see the flag in
there and I hit a little pitching wedge. I hit it good, I didn’t see it go in but it was a bonus to start the day for sure.” It was just the catalyst that Chisnall needed to run down Pearce. He summed up the early switch in momentum. “I hadn’t really been in this situation before, trying to chase someone down. “The biggest thing for me was getting off to a good start which I managed to do and I put Pearcey under a bit of pressure. He struggled a wee bit early on.”
“Then the closer you get, the harder it is for him and easier it is for you, that worked out today for me.” Pearce, an Ashburton professional, began the day with a four shot lead but faded quickly when he made four bogeys on the front nine on his way to carding a threeover par 75 and finish in fourth place on six-under par. To rub salt into the wound, Pearce bogeyed his final hole to mean that Bateman would claim the winner’s cheque of $7200 for finishing as the leading professional. Chisnall, a tier two member of the national academy, hoped his win was the start of bigger things to come but he is in no rush. “I am in no hurry to turn pro,” said the former New Zealand amateur runner-up. “I still have a lot to do in amateur golf to feel like I am worthy of turning pro and play well enough to make money. “I want to get overseas and get some international results behind me. I have played well in New Zealand and it is just a matter of doing that in some bigger events.” Hawke’s Bay professional Doug Holloway once again came home strong during the final round. The five-time Charles Tour winner matched the course record of Fraser Wilkin when he signed for an eightunder par 64.

Cassidy continues her top form for 2014
C
hantelle Cassidy chalked up her second major win of the year when she ran away with victory in the Harewood Open in Christchurch. The Waikato player, from the Cambridge Golf Club, ended up with a 13-shot lead over New Zealand’s No 1 ranked amateur Munchin Keh. The huge winning margin was close to the Charles Tour record, which is held by Lydia Ko when she won by 17 shots in the 2011 Muriwai Open in Auckland. Cassidy’s win completed at great year for the 21-year-old after winning the New Zealand Amateur Championship in April. She was also the leading amateur in the Carrus Open, another Charles Tour event, at Tauranga in September when finishing second to Auckland professional Jenna Hunter. “It means a lot to win my first Charles Tour title,’’ Cassidy said. She went into the final round with a 10shot lead but said she was not about to play conservatively. “I was just focused on posting a really good score and playing the best golf that I could, like I did the last three days.” Cassidy was solid throughout her final round, making one birdie on each of the nine-holes. She said she had spent a lot time working on her putting leading into the event and her

ability to scramble was the most pleasing aspect of her final round. “I holed a lot of putts and got up and down
really well, so I was proud of that.” Cassidy finished the tournament at six under par with scores of 70, 69, 71 and 70.
Geary beaten in play-off to NSW Open
Bay of Plenty professional Josh Geary was beaten on the second play-off hole in the New South Wales Open at Stonecutters Ridge Golf Club, west of Sydney. Geary, 30, finished the four rounds of regulation play at 14-under par in a tie with Anthony Brown from Victoria. The 18th was played as the sudden death hole. Both players made birdie on their first playoff hole and on the second time down 18, Brown made birdie to claim his first title on the PGA Tour of Australasia. Said Brown: “It was a pretty tough week, it was stinking hot Friday then today with this wind I am just relieved to be done. “I came second in the Australian PGA Championship a few years ago, it’s about time I stood up and had a win. It feels great.” Australian-based Kiwi Michael Long finished in a share of fifth place, four shots back, and Masterton professional Ben Campbell finished in a share of 13th place.

uckland has been without a top professional golf tournament for seven years but that drought will end in March. The New Zealand PGA Championship has been confirmed for the Remuera Golf Club in Auckland for the next two years. Next year’s event, sponsored by Holden New Zealand, will carry prizemoney of $125,000 and will be held from March 5-8. That is the week before the New Zealand Open in Queenstown which should mean a good field, said New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association chief executive Duncan Simpson. “Playing it back to back to the BMW New Zealand Open will help ensure a strong field for both events,’’ Simpson said. “We are also excited about the potential to grow the Holden New Zealand PGA Championship to become a highlight of the Auckland sporting calendar, providing unique corporate hosting and relationship building opportunities. “The excellent facilities at Remuera Golf Remuera Golf Club in Auckland is set to host the NZ PGA Championship. Played since 1920, the New Zealand PGA Championship has been one of the local golfing calendar’s most prestigious events, and a key stop on the PGA Tour of Australasia. It has featured household names such as Andy Shaw, Peter Thomson, Kel Nagle, Sir Bob Charles, Tony Jacklin, John Lister, Frank Nobilo, Greg Turner and Michael Hendry as champions over the years. For many years it was played at Mount Maunganui in Tauranga, coinciding with the New Year holiday, but in recent times it moved to the South Island, firstly to the Clearwater Golf Club in Christchurch, and then in 2012 and 2013 to The Hills Golf Club in Queenstown, where the event was played in a unique pro-am format.

BOP saves best for last at Invercargill B
ay of Plenty completed a comefrom-behind win to take out the SBS Invitational at the Invercargill Golf Club. The three-time champions began the final round of the annual teams’ strokeplay championship in a share of second place on a team total of 288, alongside Waikato, one shot back from the hosts and leaders Southland. But Bay of Plenty’s best was saved for the final round in tricky conditions to score a five-over par total of 293 to secure a seven shot victory over Southland which was hoping to win the title for the first time since 1985. Waikato and Manawatu-Wanganui finished in a tie for third while the NZ PGA Trainees Team, who were invited to the event but could not win the title, finished fifth. Bay of Plenty’s win provided some compensation after being the beaten finalists at last year’s New Zealand Interprovincials. Bay of Plenty rep Hayden Beard said after the win: “The boys played really well all week, especially yesterday in those tough conditions. “We were just trying to minimise mistakes. Landyn [Edwards] made plenty of birdies so it was good to get a low one from him and then today Landyn was solid again and Bailey [Smith] played really well to give us a chance. All of the other boys pitched in. It was a real team effort.” Bailey Smith, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season around New Zealand in 2014, was the best of Bay of Plenty in the

crucial final round when he carded a oneunder par 71. He was well supported by Landyn Edwards (73), Beard (74) and Sam Davis (75) in the format where the best four out of five scores count towards the team’s total. The win is Bay of Plenty’s fourth (2001, 2003, 2006 and 2014) since the event began in 1977 at the Invercargill Golf Club. Beard, a 24-year-old from the Mount Maunganui Golf Club, said the team learned a huge amount about their resolve in the testing conditions that included hail, rain, gale-force winds and freezing temperatures. “The key in those conditions was hitting it to spots where you can make birdie and if you don’t then you have to scramble well to make your par,’’ Beard said. “Those conditions test your character be-
cause you are going to hit bad shots – it is all about how you respond to that.” Waikato No 1 Luke Toomey claimed the individual honours – the Russell Haywood Memorial Trophy – by two shots from Edwards with a very impressive two-under par total in the extreme conditions over the three rounds. Toomey, the New Zealand Strokeplay Champion, added his name to the list of Kiwi greats who have won the individual honours in Invercargill which includes the likes of Gareth Paddison, Marcus Wheelhouse, Tim Wilkinson and Ryan Fox. Manawatu-Wanganui had the teamround of the tournament when it managed a five-under par 283 in round two to get back into contention.

Simon Owen wins Australia PGA Seniors in play-off
T
aupo professional Simon Owen won the Australian PGA Seniors Championship in dramatic fashion. Owen, who finished regulation play tied with Australian Michael Harwood on two-under par, made a birdie on the first play-off hole to claim the title. Owen, who is best known for finishing runner-up at the 1978 Open Championship in Britain to Jack Nicklaus, showed the value of his experience during the first playoff hole. He hit a three wood off the tee to within 20 feet of the hole on the short par four 18th to put the pressure on his rival. Harwood, also a runnerup at the Open Championship, chose to lay-up and when his birdie putt from 10 feet failed to drop, the trophy was Owen’s. “I’m ecstatic to win this
tournament,” said the 63-year-old. “There are some great names on this trophy and it’s an honour to now be alongside them.” Owen had rounds of 66, 70 and 72 at the Richmond Golf Club in west Sydney to finish in a share of the lead. A two-time winner of the New Zealand PGA Senior Championship, it was Owen’s first time contesting the Australian PGA Senior Championship. Owen’s win continues his illustrious professional career into his senior years. The former New Zealand Open Champion, who won twice on the European Tour in 1970s, has added two European senior titles, two senior NZ PGA Championships and now the Australian Senior PGA Championship to his record.

NZ Mid-Amateur winners lead all the way
I
t was wire-to-wire wins for both the men’s and women’s victors of the New Zealand Mid-Amateur in Taupo. The men’s division was taken out by Mark Boulton from Victoria while the women’s section went to Kathy Olsen from the Maraenui club in Hawke’s Bay. Boulton and Olsen are both previous winners of the event, which is for players aged 30 and over. Boulten had also won last year while Olsen was notching her third win, having previously won in 2010 and 2011. The tournament, managed by Par NZ Golfing Holidays on behalf of New Zealand Golf, was held at Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary Club. Olsen won by six shots with scores of 75, 79 and 84. Going into the final day she had a seven-shot lead but that was relinquished by the 12th hole where Annette Muir from North Harbour had drawn level. But over the final holes Olsen drew away again, including a birdie on the 17th. Boulton, from Phillip Island, southeast of Melbourne, had scores of 70, 72 and 76 on the par 72 course to win by five shots. Boulton has not played the Australian equivalent of the New Zealand tour-
nament and reflected after his win, that some of his “best golf has been played at Wairakei.’’ The tournament prize list also recognised the best net scores, which were awarded to Jean-Marc Colomar (Waitemata, North Harbour) with 206 and Pip Dunphy (Titirangi, Auckland) who had a net 226. In the senior men’s section, Peter Rankin from Wellington’s Manor Park club had rounds of 77, 79 and 78 to win the best gross by a massive 10 shots with a three-round total of 234. The best net score in the men’s seniors was awarded to Dave Barrow (Wellington, Waikanae). Past winners of the Women’s Trust Shield, Eleanor Hodson (Taranaki, New Plymouth) and Jenny Ritchie, (Manawatu, Marton) were first and second respectively in the senior women’s division. Other winners included the best stableford scores in the two men’s divisions from Philip Trevenen, (BOP, Waihi) and Jeff Timms (Hawke’s Bay, Napier) and in the women’s, Trish McBride (BOP, Kawerau) and Annabel Means (BOP, Wairakei). Auckland’s Akarana member, Margaret Lay was awarded the best net in the senior women’s section.

Nike Golf Unveils Vapor Iron Franchise – The Iron Reimagined - Insights from Nike Golf athletes, including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, inspire engineering and design for perfected precision and power -
N
ike Golf has reimagined golf irons with the introduction of its new Vapor franchise –Vapor Pro, Vapor Pro Combo, and Vapor Speed. The modern family of irons was unveiled to a global media audience today near New York City during an event featuring Nike athletes Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, and celebrity golf aficionado Jimmy Fallon. The Vapor irons blend the detailed craftsmanship of Nike’s master club builder, Mike Taylor; the engineering expertise

of The Oven; and the imagination of Nike designers. The result; a family of irons featuring a pinnacle Nike innovation called Modern Muscle. Modern Muscle is a modification of a standard muscle-back design that moves the iron’s centre of gravity to the centre of the clubface, crafted to yield more efficient and pure strikes. The innovation has already contributed to a major championship victory when Rory McIlroy put a prototype Vapor Pro Combo 2-iron (MM Proto) in the bag and went on to win the 2014 Open Championship. While Rory was the first to win with Modern Muscle in the bag, the innovation itself started with insights from Tiger Woods. “Our engineers and designers at The Oven have been working with Tiger for quite some time to evolve this innovation and bring it to the golf athlete,” said Rob Arluna, Nike Golf’s Global Golf Club Business Director. “We started with the traditional blade and asked what could be done to enhance its performance and modernize the design while maintaining a traditional, pure look at address. Thanks to Tiger’s inspiration, coupled with Rory’s added insights, we made the Vapor Pro blades feel and perform better with a technology advantage over the traditional blade. We then extended that innovation and design to Vapor Pro Combo and Vapor Speed.” irons “Years back when we tested the parts with adjusted weighting, I immediately noticed a more balanced feel and more consistent performance,” said Woods. “Working with the club team to bring this concept to life was a great experience.

“We were inspired by the fact that traditional blades all look the same and challenged ourselves to rally around a big idea taken from Tiger’s insights,” said Nike Golf Design Director, Andrew Oldknow. “Our goal was to create a visual look on the exterior of the club that defines what’s happening on the inside. Shifting weight away from the heel of the club for a more precise centre of gravity is what defines Modern Muscle, and that is distinctly visible across the three iron designs.
With a modernized take on the classic blade profile, the Vapor Pro is Nike Golf’s most precise iron to date. The Vapor Pro Combo has the clean lines and workability of a blade with the power of a distance iron – resulting in the ultimate blend of precision and power. The Vapor Speed delivers pure power for the golf athlete who wants maximum distance and forgiveness through the set. Within Nike, the name Nike Vapor is synonymous with the company’s most premium innovations that boldly elevate athlete performance. The Nike Vapor name is featured in other categories within Nike, including baseball and global football. The Vapor irons will be available at select retailers Dec, 2014. >> For more information visit www.nikegolf. com.au or contact (03) 339 4540.

Top NZ women have busy month ahead I t will be a busy January for New Zealand’s top women golfers. The Lake Macquarie amateur in New South Wales from January 4-7 and the Australian women’s amateur in Sydney from January 20-25 are two regular tournaments the better players aim for. But in between those events next month there will be the important addition of the Astor Trophy in Adelaide from January 12-16. The Astor Trophy, previously known as the Commonwealth Tournament, is held once every four years. New Zealand will compete against Great Britain and Ireland, Australia, Canada and South Africa. New Zealand has yet to win the event but has finished second five times. Great Britain and Ireland, the defending champions, have been the most successful with seven wins while Australia is second-best with four wins. Those selected for New Zealand are Auckland sisters Munchin and Wenyung Keh, Wellington No 1 Julianne Alvarez, Chantelle Cassidy (Waikato)

Auckland, with 10 previous wins in the event sponsored by Diners Club, was a hot favourite to win but lost its final-round match 3-2 to Waikato. Northland took advantage of the situation to beat Canterbury 3-2 in its final-round match and win the title for the first time in 16 years. “It feels fantastic,” said Northland No 3 Bob Shirley.
“It has been a few years trying to do this. We have a great team who hung in there all week and it couldn’t be better.”

New Zealand Golf high performance manager Gregg Thorpe said the tournament presented a great opportunity for the Kiwis to compete against some of the best players in the world. “This is a very unique event, it only happens every four years but it’s one all of the players want to play,” Thorpe said. “They get to test themselves against some great nations from the north (hemisphere) as well as some of our better-known southern hemisphere counterparts.’’ The Adelaide venue will be The Grange Golf Club which some of the New Zealand players will be familiar with, Thorpe said. “The format is one Kiwis are used to, being foursomes and singles matchplay and with the Australian amateur being played at The Grange (last January), a number of the players already have tournament experience at the venue.”

NZ GOLF UPDATE
golf.co.nz
Dean Murphy
New Zealand Golf Chief Executive
Steering golf in the right direction T
he biggest news to come out of New Zealand Golf in the past few weeks has been the release of our Community Golf Plan – Towards 2018 (CGP). This is an outstanding piece of work that we are really proud to have completed. The Community Golf Plan development has been a major piece of work for our team who have undertaken an enormous amount of consultation with the golf sector to ensure all bases are covered. Now completed, this new plan now sits within the overall NZG Strategic Framework and alongside a number of other key plans that make up our ‘Whole of Golf’ approach to supporting and growing the game. This document (which can be viewed on the link at the bottom of this article) sums up our intended approach to grass roots and club golf – what we call Community Golf. As many of you will be aware, NZG has refocused our organisation to reflect the importance of Community Golf and the role that golf clubs and our partners play in supporting and growing the game. The Community Golf Plan will, however, only be as good as the people who support it. We have met with Sport New Zealand and a number of other key investment partners who are thrilled with the new direction which we are taking the sport. Golf, in this regard, is well ahead of others sports in New Zealand. The plan is in place, it is now time to realise it. It is no secret that golf clubs and communities have been suffering in recent times. Declining membership
is a consistent theme around New Zealand and we need to take action to turn things around. I have said this many times in this column but if we keep doing the same things, we will get the same results. The purpose of the Community Golf Plan - Towards 2018 is to clearly articulate our plan to support the work of district associations, golf clubs and other golf providers at a grassroots level. This plan is critical to New Zealand Golf achieving the vision for the future ‘Golf is New Zealand’s Favourite Pastime’. The most important aspect of this document are the targets. The CGP has set out seven clear and measurable objectives to achieve by 2018. These include participation, membership, coaching, facilities, capability, volunteers and partnerships. The outcomes are specific and measurable. We believe that they are achievable but we all need to work together. The key to this CGP succeeding will be engagement from all members in the golf community. If you are unclear on any aspects of this CGP then I encourage you to contact our National Community Golf Manager Kenny Halliday and his team and become engaged. We hope that 2014 will mark a watershed moment for the sport – a time when the golf community rallied around a great plan and took some positive steps towards a sustainable and prosperous future for the game. There a number of ways for all golfers to get involved
with growing the game. Every golfer who introduces someone to their club in our Member Get Member programme with LOVE Golf goes into the draw to play in the BMW New Zealand Open in Queenstown and there are also great monthly prizes of LOVE Golf gear to be won. For the 500,000 or so casual golfers we have around New Zealand, you can now register as a casual golfer to be included in the golf community and receive some real benefits. The casual golf initiative sees a marketing platform to be launched this month to green fees, membership options and other benefits from the golf community to golfers all over the country. It is an exciting time for the sport and New Zealand Golf is focused on building clubs and communities and making the game easy as possible for all Kiwis to play. The vision is for golf to be New Zealanders favourite pastime, let’s make it happen. >> Community Golf Plan http://www.golf.co.nz/uploads/CommunityGolfPlanonline. pdf >> Member Get Member Campaign with LOVE Golf http://lovegolf.co.nz/news/newsdetails.aspx?newsid=5 >> Casual Golf http://www.golf.co.nz/NewsMedia/Article. aspx?id=2427&src=&topickey

Calling all caddies for the New Zealand Open
H
ow would you like to be inside the ropes at the New Zealand Open, walking the fairways and enjoying some great golf at one of the world’s great golf destinations? The reason I ask is that I am looking for 150 caddies for the 2015 New Zealand Open to be played at The Hills and Millbrook courses near Queenstown from March 12-15. Having been the caddy master for the previous three New Zealand Opens, I have met some great people that have become regular caddies. But some no longer deal through me or official caddy channels. Instead they are now social media Facebook friends with their tour players and are considered pre-booked. Some players also bring their friends, family or spouses to come and caddy for them. So out of the total number, with the repeat caddies from a field of 288 professional and amateur players, I am looking for only 150 caddies. Unfortunately, I cannot confirm that you will end up caddying for one of the top professional players or celebrities but 99 percent of my caddies have a great time and look forward to returning each year. One of my top caddies from the 2014 tournament got offered a job to go to Japan and Australia to caddy for his player. They are now good friends communicating on Facebook and catching up with each other. It is neat to see how the relationship grows from the first introduction to the end of the tournament. It is also heartening to then see that relationship kick in the following year.
Having been a professional caddy at Pebble Beach and Spanish Bay in the United States, I know it is not an easy gig. Not everyone gets on well and not all relationships are perfect on the golf course. Some caddies do get sacked but it is usually a case of just going with the flow and doing the basics. The adage of keep up and shut up and know your golf are the key elements to be-
ing a caddy. This is why I am calling on golfers of New Zealand that want to experience what it is like to caddy to contact me early and register. One important ingredient is that a good level of fitness is required. “They do not call it The Hills for nothing!’’ was a reply from one of the exhausted caddies as he returned to the tent after a round with his player. The common questions I get asked are about carrying golf bags, footwear and what to bring. Everyone has pretty much the same concerns and most of the players are really good at supporting their caddies as they all realise it is a unique golfing week in Queenstown. Yes, you do carry the bag and all players are asked to bring appropriate carry bags. Caddies do not wear golf shoes but runners or spikeless golf shoes are fine. Most importantly, for any caddy, is they must bring a good thermal top, an easy-to-pack rain jacket and a good hat. And don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat. So, what should you do if you want to register to be a caddy at the 2015 BMW New Zealand Open? Go to the tournament website and click on volunteers then select caddies and register. There is a cost of $39 and for this you receive a tournament pass, an official tournament hat and a logoed caddy shirt that makes you part of the caddy group. There is no age limit just as long as you are 15 years or older and comfortably capable of walking a hilly golf course in up to 30C degree. temperatures. If so, then I look forward to seeing you there.

Auckland back on the tournament golf map I
t’s barely a generation ago since the fairways of central Auckland golf courses surged with thousands of fans following top level professional golf through tournaments such as the Air New Zealand/ Shell Open (Titirangi) and the New Zealand Open (The Grange, Royal Auckland and Remuera). With the holding of the World Cup of Golf in 1998 at Gulf Harbour, followed by further NZ Opens there (2005 and 2006), it seemed as though those glory days would continue in the country’s largest city. Unfortunately a combination of factors, such as isolation from the central business district, expensive co-sanctioning agreements, high appearance fees for marquee players and – possibly most significantly – seismic shifts in the world golf calendar - conspired against higher level professional golf tournaments in Auckland to see the focus moving to South Island venues such as Clearwater and The Hills. So the announcement of the Holden New Zealand PGA Championship, to be played at Remuera Golf Club from March 5– 8 next year for a purse of $125,000 brings a welcome end to a long drought for Auckland golf fans, and an equally welcome return of Holden as major supporters of golf in New Zealand through events such as the Holden Scramble and previous NZ Opens, including the last to be won by a New Zealander (Mahal Pearce at Royal Auckland in 2003). It also launches a new era for one of New Zealand’s most famous golf tournaments: the New Zealand PGA Championship.
First played for in 1920 – won by the famous trick shot artist Joe Kirkwood – the PGA was originally a matchplay event held in conjunction with NZ Open week, eventually changing to strokeplay in 1965. The McDougall trophy for the NZPGA Championship winner features a galaxy of household names, including Kel Nagle, Peter Thomson, Sir Bob Charles, Tony Jacklin, Greg Turner, John Lister and Frank Nobilo, plus recent New Zealand winners Steven Alker (2009) and Michael Hendry (2012 and 2013). The most prolific of these is Kel Nagle with seven victories spanning both forms of the championship between 1957 and 1975, matched only by the superstar of the 1920s and 1930s: Andy Shaw, with seven PGA matchplay titles. The Holden PGA Championship will be played one week before the New Zealand Open in Queenstown, so a similar field can be anticipated as many players will welcome the chance to spread their travel costs across two tournaments rather than one. A number of higher ranking Chinese and Japanese players are expected to start, giving rise to the possibility of a second Japanese winner of the PGA Championship – the first being Masashi (Jumbo) Ozaki at Mt Maunganui in 1971. But first they will all have to get past reigning champion Michael Hendry, who will be back trying for an his-

toric three-peat, last achieved by Kel Nagle in 1973–1975. Remuera Golf Club is no stranger to championship golf, having hosted the 1994 New Zealand Open, and a number of top amateur events. The course has undergone a number of improvements with more planned in the coming years. While not long at 6222 metres, it will provide its share of challenges as well as birdie and eagle opportunities. The three finishing holes: two par fives bracketing the 196m par three 17th, offer an interesting parallel to the PGA Centenary (Ryder Cup) course at Gleneagles, with equally exciting finishes in prospect. Remuera’s excellent practice and clubhouse facilities will provide a quality experience for players, corporates and the public alike. The club’s accessibility to the CBD means that the event will link easily to other city attractions, including the cricket World Cup next year. The Holden New Zealand PGA Championship has the potential to build into an iconic community sporting event in years to come, and fans in Auckland and wider afield won’t have to wait much longer for the drought to break, with a great week of golf starting at 7.30am on Thursday, March 5 at the Remuera Golf Club.

EVENT
From TaylorMade World Masters to US Masters for Judi By Peter McCarthy
J
udi Dockrill from Manly Golf Club was the big winner at the TaylorMade World Masters hosted on the Gold Coast from 19-25 October. Judi won a $19,000 trip on Go Golfing’s escorted tour to the 2015 US Masters during the final night presentation dinner. Her trip starts with 3 nights in North Carolina staying and playing at Pinehurst Village before making the pilgrimage to Augusta for a week at the Masters. Judi, along with her husband Bill, were among 600 golfers from 13 countries who contested the 19th annual World Masters Golf Championship, sponsored for the first time by TaylorMade Golf. “This was our first time at the tournament and it was so exciting to be on stage as part of the major prize draw. And to win the US Masters prize, WOW!” Billed as Australia’s biggest and richest tournament for club golfers, more than $120,000 in golf and lucky draw prizes are presented across the week. The final night major prize draw features 10 golfing holidays to all parts of the globe, with the US Masters trip awarded top billing. Akin to a reality tv show, 10 golfers are drawn to come on stage and one by one they leave with holiday prizes increasing in value. The final two on stage were Judi Dockrill and Bryan McCorkill from Leongatha in Victoria. When Bryan’s name was drawn for the golf trip to China, well that left Judi as the lone survivor and winner of the US Masters trip. golf handicap. Competition is in age and handicap divisions and playing with golfers your own age and standard is among the tournament’s proud traditions. All golfers compete in the 4 round stableford competition with ‘A’ grade golfers also eligible for the best gross. The Championship is played on a rotation of the Gold Coast’s premier golfing resorts. All golfers played RACV Royal Pines Resort – home to the Australian PGA and Ladies Masters, the Greg Norman designed
Glades, Palmer Gold Coast and the Jack Nicklaus signature course at Lakelands. Tulip Ganzelves, another playing the tournament for the first time was duly impressed with the event organization. “Hats off to Go Golfing. I was amazed that even with 600 plus people everything ran like clockwork. I am in my seventies and I appreciate the little things like my clubs being taken from course to course and they were on my cart before I arrived. There was complimentary water in the carts. Bus-
es picked me up and brought me home each day. Beyond the tournament this was a relaxing holiday which was so enjoyable that I will be back again next year with more recruits.” A veteran of the last 15 tournaments, Laurie Littman looks forward to the camaraderie which is synonymous with the Masters. “I travel up each year with a mate and we look forward to renewing friendships with golfers we have met over the years.” More than a tournament, the TaylorMade World Masters features clinics and demonstrations from major sponsor TaylorMade Golf. Every night there are social and entertainment functions with the welcome and presentation dinners featuring world class entertainment headlined by comedy impressionist Paul Martell. There is a program of events for non golfing partners that include high tea, fashion parades, day tours and cooking classes. The tournament has now raised more than $210,000 for charities supporting cancer. Next year marks the 20th anniversary for the World Masters Golf Championship and 25 to 31 October 2015 are the confirmed dates. Go Golfing’s managing director Peter McCarthy is keen to make it the best on record. “The TaylorMade World Masters is a week long celebration of golf and social events with great entertainment. We are working with our sponsors and partners to make sure our 20th anniversary will be very special.” To view the results and photos from the 2014 TaylorMade World Masters and to register your interest for the 2015 event please visit www.gogolfing.net.au

Terrace Downs Very handy to Christchurch, arguably this country’s capital when it comes to the number and variety of quality golf courses of offer, Terrace Downs won the 2010 World Travel Awards as New Zealand’s leading golf resort. Perched on the edge of the spectacular Rakaia River, the resort boasts stunning high country views up to Mt Hutt and is within close proximity to various ski fields.
The par-72 6440m championship course includes 11 lakes and 70 bunkers with something to test even the most experienced golfer. Possibly the most exhilarating hole is the diminutive par-three 16th which plays to just 130m from the back tees. It’s not the length of this hole that stops you in your tracks, it’s the scenery. The tee
box hangs on the edge of the gorge and towers about 200m above the Rakaia River that tumbles along below. www.terracedowns.co.nz/golf/

INAUGURAL 9 HOLE MASTERS WINNERS ANNOUNCED The final days play in the 2014 9-Hole Masters Championship produced some very interesting results with Bay of Islands claiming top honours in two of the four divisions in this inaugural tournament. Frank Webber, a local member won the men’s division by 3 shots after a 3rd round of 22 stableford points. Webber was always in the hunt but his final round piped overnight leaders Bruce Honeybone (Bay of Islands) and Norm Doidge (Okaihau) who had mixed fortunes in their days play. Honeybone had his worst round of the tournament with a 16 today to fall to 4th equal place, while Doidge had a round he would probably like to forget, falling off the pace to finish in a share of 6th. Sharing 2nd place with total scores after the three rounds of 57, were Tony Pratt from Cambridge and Rick Parker from Sherwood Park. In total there were 26 men entered with 23 of these being current 18 hole members. Oriel Barnes from the host club, lead from start to finish, to take the winners podium for Division 2 women, split by handicaps 18 and over. Barnes led by one shot after round one, increasing her lead to 5 points after yesterdays round. She hung on to take line honours by 3 points over club-mate Bar-

Two shots back on 52, were Jacky Fenney and Judy Pratt from Matarua and Cambridge respectively. There were 24 ladies entered in this division with two only being 18-hole registered members. The lower handicap women, of which there were 24 competing on handicaps 17 and below, included ten 18-hole golfers. On 53 points, was Kathy McFarlane from Northland, winning by two points over local Jinni Park. Shona Huxtable from Warkworth finished with 50 points, one shot back, with 4th place going to Ann Hathaway from Bay of Islands GC on 49 points. The inaugural 27-hole tournament split out a third group of women, by age, recognising the competitors aged 70 and over. Val Going (Ngunguru) won the affectionately called ‘Golden Girls’ and the largest division with 31 competitors, with 61 points after a blistering round of 25 today. This gave Going a 4-point lead over fellow Ngunguru member, Win Hardy who started the day as overnight leader. In third place was Bay of Islands club member Maritha O’Leary on 54 points, followed by June Davis-Goff (Sherwood Park), Judith Harkins (Bay of Islands), and Margaret Foster (Warkworth) all tied with 53 points. An innovative initiative supported by
tered members. The inaugural New Zealand 9-hole tournament has raised much speculation and discussion about handicap eligibility and appropriate divisions, not only from the competitors but also many 9-hole members around the country. The organising committee who are looking to run the event for two further years in the Bay of Islands asked all competitors to contribute with feedback promising to consider all scenarios. They are set to announce dates for 2015 with ideally again the support of New Zealand Golf.
WAIPU CELEBRATES MELBOURNE CUP DAY With generous sponsorship again from MJ & DK Leech Fencing a shotgun start for the tournament was trialed and the feedback was that it worked well! The draw was done on Monday, and there were a few changes between Monday night and tee off on Tuesday morning but hopefully next year, everyone will get their entry in nice and early! The course was in great condition, and the weather held out for most of the day. 77 players were in the field, including 8 nine-holers and a few non-affiliated players, all of whom appeared to enjoy their day. With prize giving done and dusted before the race began, the judging of the “Best Race Day Outfit” took place after the race – congratulations to Sherri McKay who won this with her very smart “polka dot” black and white ensemble with matching hat. The surprise for the day were the two’s which were included in the entry fee – only two and the recipients each received a voucher for over $70 to spend in the Golf Shop. NORTHLAND WOMAN CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS As reported by Waipu Golf Club
When Golf Northland member Sherrill Glen asked if Waipu could host the Champion of Champions for 2014, our response was of course “yes”, but I have to admit to a feeling of nervous dread for what this could entail. However, the Ladies Committee embraced the challenge as they always do, and preparations got underway for 1 November 2014. After thunder and lighting, rain and wind in the preceding week, it was a delight to wake up to sunshine and clear skies on Saturday. Our day started at 7am, and players were already arriving for their start time at 7.45am. The ladies provided

GOLF TRAILS a wonderful morning tea for all our visitors and playing members and the day got off to a great start. Our greenkeeper and his staff did a fabulous job getting all the fairways and surrounds mown and prepared, and the greens in top condition. We had plenty of willing helpers, with Murray MacFadyen and Doug Shadbolt on the tees doing the starting, and John Pennington did a fantastic job all day, keeping the leader boards up to date as players passed through, and then finished their rounds. Christine Berridge from Golf Northland, was on hand all day assisted by Betty Wakelin entering the cards, and they worked hard finalizing score sheets and the inside board. The Rosebowl was filled with roses donated by many people in the community, and Wendy Legarth and Betty Johns arranged them and organised some floral tributes for players. Thanks to Lynne Causer for the lovely arrangement in the foyer. Thank you to all those who gave flowers – they made our Clubhouse look absolutely beautiful. The flower pots were gorgeous, and somehow withstood the windy conditions on Friday, to enhance our tees for Saturday. Thank you to all our lady members who provided these. The Silver players went right down to the wire, arriving at the 18th with Kylie Jacoby and Brooke Kingi (Whangaroa) tied for the lead. Both had 6 foot putts to sink. Kylie putted first – and it didn’t go in, which gave
Brooke a chance to take the trophy. However, her putt also missed in so they finished the 18th remaining all tied for 1st. It was off to the 10th and 18th holes for the playoffs. They had to play 4 holes in a “sudden death” competition to get a winner, but eventually our own Kylie Jacoby managed to take the Championship on the 18th. Robyn Price, our Bronze Matchplay Champion also had a great day and produced the lowest gross in her division to be the Bronze Champion. Our Rosebowl Team, made up of Kylie, Robyn and Margaret Pennington also scooped the pool with the highest gross stablefords. The Prizegiving was all in favour of Waipu, and the Waipu supporters were very vocal with cheers and hoorays every time one of our players was called up! Well done girls – we are so proud of you all. SENIOR BATTLE OF THE BRIDGE The annual Battle of the Bridge between North Harbour and Auckland Senior Golfers took place on 13th October at The Grange Golf Course, Papatoetoe, with teams of 60 players from each district. The Grange course was in great condition which resulted in some good scoring. The best individual stablefords were from Auckland Seniors with the top 3 being Joe Reihana (Maramarua) with 40, Hap Chai Ong (Pakuranga) with 39 and Bruce Martin (Pakuranga) with 38. The top three North Harbour Seniors were Nigel Poole (Peninsula) with 39, Michael McEntegart (Warkworth) with 37 and Peter Jankowitz (Pupuke) with 36. However the trophy which is awarded to the district with the
best average stableford was retained by North Harbour with an average score of 29.32 narrowly ahead of Auckland’s score of 28.6. Next year the Battle of the Bridge will be played at North Shore Golf Club on 12th October 2015.
AUCKLAND
AUCKLAND STROKEPLAY Titirangi hosted the Auckland men’s and women’s strokeplay championship from 7th – 9th November. A relatively small field of 65 players teed it up on a very tricky day one. Strong winds, challenging pin placements and green speeds at 12 feet made scoring very difficult and quite possibly surprised the quality field just how precise they needed to be to post a good score on the par 70 Titirangi layout. Knowing on day two that the wind was to blow again, the greens were only rolled in an effort to slow them down and to hopefully get some lower scores. This was achieved by Brad Hayward with a 68 and Brian Joe with 70. Leaders after round 2 Luke Brown (The Pines), and Jordan Loof (Akarana) held a 2 shot lead after a pair of 72’s over Sam An (Titirangi) and Brad Hayward (New Plymouth) In the Women’s field New Zealand representative & Titirangi member Munchin Keh held a 5 shot lead with 75,75 over another Titirangi member Brittney Dryland & Omanu’s Alanna Campbell who had rounds of 77, 78 respectively.

BAY OF PLENTY
OMANU CLASSIC BACK TO THE MOUNT Hayden Beard and Bailey Smith duelled out 72 holes to be the first Mt Maunganui winner of the Omanu Classic since Terry Cochrane, 29 years ago, back in 1985. For Beard, the current Bay of Plenty number one, it was a war of attrition wearing down his mate. Smith took a one shot lead into the last nine, after a crafted 34. Beard picked up a birdie after coming out of the trees on the 10th and Bailey missed a gettable putt on the 11th to slip one behind. He also bogeyed the 13th and Beard sealed the win with a birdie on the last to finish three shots clear. Beard’s win was the result of 4 rounds of consistent golf with no blemishes. All his rounds were under par; 71, 71, 67 and 69 for a four round total of 278, ten under par. Bailey finished on 281 and their playing partner, Landyn Edwards (Rotorua) came home third on 283. Beard now follows many Omanu Classic winners when he will try his luck in the professional ranks by heading to Q school next month. Omanu’s own Jordan Golding shot the round of the tournament; a 66 in his fi-
nal round to shoot up the leader board and finish in 4th position. This was achieved on the back of 5 birdies in the first nine to shoot an opening nine of just 31. While he finished the back nine in 35 he offset another three birdies with bogeys on the 12th and 15th. In the Ladies’ field Chantelle Cassidy came back for her first victory after 3 previous visits and two seconds in the last two years. She was the most consistent of the ladies with rounds of 71, 74, 73 and 71 to total one over par 289. She won by four shots in the end from Omanu’s Alanna Campbell, but the golfing gods were on her shoulder this weekend. In her last round she struck a tree off the tee on the 10th and despite the crowd searching, her ball could not be found. With time virtually up, her ball dropped from the tree to a very playable lie and a resulting birdie. Her second shot into the green on the 18th was over cooked and bounced into a spectator, probably saving it from going out of bounds. The resulting bogey was good enough. Campbell, playing at home started slowly but finished well on day two to come home a clear second from Rotana Howard (Rotorua). Still only 16 Campbell’s time will come and she will enjoy the experience of playing with Cassidy in the New Zealand team to contest the Astor (Commonwealth) Trophy in Australia early next year. The weather gods also played their part with a fine weekend and only Saturday afternoon’s round played in windy conditions. The course conditions and firm true greens were complimented on by all the competitors.

just that the group ahead of him had taken out the flagstick to proceed with their putting when Gibbons played his second shot. “I saw the guys ahead and I was thinking should I wait?’’ Gibbons recalled. “Then I thought it is 20 years since I last hit this green in two and there is no way I am going to make it. “But I absolutely flushed it, there was a howling wind behind us and it went in.’’ The hole-in-two, known as an albatross, was scored on the 10th which is 454m in length. Gibbons said his second shot, with a three wood, went 235m. Gibbons, 60, achieved the feat on October 26 and was on a course handicap of 14 at the time. He has been a member at Omanu for nearly 25 years and has scored two holes-in-one.

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS FOR TAUPO Taupo Golf Club took most of the honours at this year’s Champion of Champions played at Kawerau last month. Led by former Bay of Plenty Representative Jason McIntosh the combined scores of their three representatives had them comfortable winners of the team’s trophy. Jason opened with a 4 under 67 which included a hole in one on the 7th then in the afternoon backed it up with a 69 to comfortably take the senior title. Fellow Taupo member Grant Hill who usually plays off a single figure handicap won the Intermediate title with outstanding rounds of 74 & 77 which would have had him very well placed in the senior field. Danny Mills who was Taupo ‘s junior rep did enough to ensure they won the teams title. There were great celebrations from the support crew from Murupara when their junior champion Rua Te Pairi took out the junior championship.

LAKEVIEW CLASSIC SUCCESS

The 2014 Lakeview Golf Classic was held on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th November at Lakeview Golf and Country Club in Rotorua. It proved to be a very successful tournament, with 128 entries, attracting players from all over the North Island. Conditions were splendid, with great weather all weekend. The recent upgrade of irrigation (thanks to First Sovereign Trust & The Southern Trust) presented the course in perfect condition. The $5,000 Hole in One Prize on the 16th Hole was not struck, and although the shot Gun start was slow on Sunday the two days were extremely successful. Mike & Laurel Flattery (Mount Maunganui) made it three in a row in winning Group 1of the 2014 Mixed Foursomes Tournament and trophy “Stanley Cup” at Mount Maunganui Golf Club. The 2014 Mixed Foursomes Tournament was held on November 1 and 2, and featured a play off between two pairs with previous winning credentials. Mike & Laurel Flattery (Mt Maunganui) having withstood challenges from another local pairing, Phil Maddren/Lesley Noel met up with Martin & Shirley Te Moni (Ngaruawahia) both pairs having previously won the trophy. Martin & Shirley Te Moni had to withstand a strong challenge from a local pairing of Brent Curnow & Caryl Cashmore to progress to the final, Group 1 Plate winners were a “make – up pair of Michael Connor (Akarana) and Sharon Ferris (Mount). Group 2 winners Paul & Suzanne Shaw (Mt Maunganui) needed to deal with challenges from locals to Win. They certainly mastered the 2’s competition with a good haul over the 2 days. Group 3 also featured a number of local players. Finally won by Dean Muller (Mount & Kath Whyte. Group 4 won by Rex & Cherie Bezer (Otumoetai). “A great Course – A great Tournament – Fantastic people – Didn’t realise Foursomes was so great”. (Comments by visitors). The 2014 Mixed Foursome tournament stood the test of time with 4 Divisions of 16 mixed pairs from 23 Clubs – Otago (2), Northland (2), Auckland (18), Waikato (18), Hawkes Bay (2), Gisborne (2) and the wider Bay of Plenty (23) venturing out
The battle of the Bay of Plenty and Waikato continued on Sunday, 16th November, with a very strong force of 25 golfers who left the Waikato behind and travelled across the Kaimai Range to Mount Maunganui sample our course, the beach and the weather and to take the Interclub Trophy back. This was the 17th Interclub between the 2 clubs with Lochiel winning a few more times than the Mount Maunganui Club. Their team, made up was of members of Lochiel and Narrows golf clubs – who now form the Riverside Golf Club, returned to Mount Maunganui following an earlier postponed interclub due unseasonal weather. Mount Maunganui Golf Club fielded a solid force of 24 players, most playing well and showing that home advantage does help to avoid the traps that are out there. Great to see some new faces playing interclub. The weather behaved presenting only a strong westerly wind to deal with. A most enjoyable and friendly golf day and played in great spirit by all players involved, establishing the scene and raising the interest for the return battle in 2015. Mount Maunganui Golf Club took charge of the day and relieved Riverside Golf Club of the Interclub Trophy with a stableford average of 34.04 slightly ahead of the Riverside 32.84. to battle through the ordeal of 72 holes of Mixed Foursomes matchplay. Excellent weather combined with an equally excellent Mount Maunganui Golf course preparation and presentation set the scene for a great weekend of competitive and combative Foursomes. The Course Superintendent and his team have following coring 4 weeks ago had then to cope with the clean-up of two large trees blown over by very strong winds. Their efforts and commitment to present a course at A1 standard is remarkable. This the 24th of the Mount Maunganui Golf Club 72 Hole Mixed Foursomes Tournaments received great backing from the long serving naming sponsor “Pacific Coast Village” (Manager Bruce Flemming) and a new co sponsor – Ebony Fashions – plus support sponsor, Sheaff Vehicles Ltd. The popularity of this successful event
again proven with the 4 divisions, 4 Groups (64 pairs), and the many players who returned once again to enjoy the course the golf and above all the camaraderie – one of the highlights of the weekend. Not forgetting that the contest is keen and the Will to win is very strong. Great to have the number of new players to the Mixed Foursomes. All promising for the 2015 tournament. Mount Maunganui Golf Club members gave great support to the 2014 Tournament with 50 players involved. There were 10 players from Tauranga (Bay of Plenty) and 8 players from Ngahinepouri (Waikato), North Shore (6), Waihi (5). Foundation to the success of the tournament is based on a small organising team of 2 strongly supported by a team of competent volunteers involved with the starting and recording results. A most enjoyable and pleasant tournament saw everyone leave vowing to return, some to settle some scores – others to prove their winning plan.

A WEEKEND OF AMATEUR GOLF AT MT MAUNGANUI The Mount Maunganui Golf Club will host two prestige Annual New Zealand Amateur Golf events over the week-end of the 13th to 15th February 2015. The 3 day “Weekend of Amateur Golf” has developed into one of NZ’s top 72 hole amateur golf events involving both men and women low handicap golfers. The tournament is one of the early events of the year and follows a series of summer tournaments in Australia. The tournaments provide players a great opportunity to resettle into the New Zealand golf environment and prepare for the chance to play in Charles Tour tournaments and the New Zealand Open. In addition to this it offers participants the chance to show
their wears for consideration for selection for representative teams. The tournament is a great opportunity for the top and up-and-coming players to strut their stuff and show their skills over 72 holes of stroke play. Since its inception in 2000, the Grant Clements Memorial Golf Tournament has developed and grown from a local/regional event to the prestigious and popular sought- after tournament that it is now recognised as nationally. The popularity, status and the recognition the tournament has achieved reflects the original purpose for the implementing the event in 2006. These aims include: •Celebrating and recognising the leadership and achievements of the Late Grant Clements, particularly with New Zealand Golf and the winning of the 1992 Eisenhower Trophy and subsequently the Halberg Teams Award. •Introducing and establishing an attractive and competitive prestige golf event to attract leading amateur golfers, from throughout New Zealand, to the Western Bay of Plenty and Mount Maunganui. •Providing a golf event of the highest order for young developing golfers of Mount Maunganui & Tauranga, to match and compete with the best quality amateur golfers of New Zealand. The initial tournaments (to 2005) where intermediate and senior golfers participated, has changed over time to an event that attracts full fields of top NZ amateur and professional golfers. The popularity of the tournament has resulted in players of

GRANT CLEMENTS MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT This event attracts the top men & women amateur golfers from all over New Zealand involving 84 men and 12 women players with the lowest handicaps as at Tournament Close date in January. Acknowledged as one of the top, NZ Amateur 72 Hole golf events, the tournament continues to attract a capacity field and is used as a selection event for players for the Srixon Academy and for representative NZ golf teams. Players recognise the significance and quality of the tournament as indicated by the number of high quality of entries the tournament attracts. This has led to the implementation of a qualifying handicap cut being less than 1.0 over the past 5 years. The tournament is strongly supported by New Zealand Golf High Performance Team Managers who require the Academy players to compete and is further supported by the attendance of the NZ Golf selectors.

THE GRAND CHALLENGE TOURNAMENT RETURNS TO TERRACE DOWNS After a very successful inaugural event, the Grand Challenge Trophy tournament event has returned to Terrace Downs for its second round on Sunday, November 23, 2014. Stunning weather made for a wonderful day out for the teams, who for a $80pp entry fee competed in clay shooting, archery, GolfCross chipping, and an Ambrose round using large 8-inch cups. This fun and challenging tournament format is a creation whose credit goes to Laurie Goodson, whose valuable help and ideas have shaped this fantastic event. The Terrace Downs Golf team along with the team at Newzengland, led by Neil Gubby, who operate their activities at the resort, coordinated the day’s events, with a morning of activities followed by beers and barbecue in the sunshine, before taking on the golf course. Congratulations to Team Shandy for winning the Trophy, along with a night’s accommodation and full rounds of all of the day’s activities. Prizes were also award for second and third places, as well as a ‘best effort’ award for the team with the worst score – they still gave it a great shot with some new and challenging activities! A special Hole in One prize was also awarded to Sue McMahon, who managed to overcome the rugby-shaped golf ball in GolfCross to put her shot straight in the hole! A great job, and one of the many highlights of this fantastic event.

ficial mark of quality – this evaluation proves that Terrace Downs is a quality establishment that visitors can trust to provide an exceptional product with great customer service and attention to detail. Terrace Downs is always looking for ways to further improve quality standards, and this endorsement is a great reminder that the hard work is paying off, along with highlighting the areas to focus on next. This is a great reflection on the resort’s ongoing improvements and upgrades being made to the golf course; over the past year, management has been undertaking significant projects to enhance the quality and condition of the course, including an extensive overhaul of the irrigation system, re-digging and re-filling of the bunkers, and investment in hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of new machinery and equipment to ensure that all required course maintenance work is able to be done to a high standard by the skilled greens keeping team.
Along with course upgrades, the overall quality of the resort’s offering has increased greatly, with high-end golf club sets for hire, additions such as ball washers and benches around the course, fish in one of the ponds, and the electric cart fleet being upgraded with new carts and extra equipment such as ball washers, course guides, rain covers, and a pack of tees, pencils, markers, pitch repairers and score cards. These additions all make for a much higher-quality experience for golf players, and Terrace Downs is proud have these improvements recognized by the Qualmark endorsement system.

GOLFER PACIFIC - MANOR PARK GOLF SANCTUARY, LOwER HUTT
To his credit Bryden played solid even par golf but Bakermans made his usual bevy of birdies and won 6/5. The fireworks were in the rest of the games and after nine holes a Russley victory looked a forlorn hope. JJ Love was 3up on Steven Heyes, Connell Kilpatrick was five down after seven holes, and apart from Garth Treacy, their teammates were struggling. However the rally came and the tide turned. Heyes played the back nine in four under and overwhelmed Love to win 3/1. Kilpatrick rallied and ended up going down the 18th 1up only to get a half against Russel Fildes. Michael McAuley won a close battle against Jordan Reid 2/and Garth Treacy beat Richard Reed 4/3 to cap a remarkable victory. Marcel Boet continued his good morning form to beat Owen Burgess 2/1. The final result 3.5-2.5 to Russley. In the Pollock Cup Waimairi Beach were expected to continue their unbeaten form, although they were without Georgia Wayman. However Russley were up for the fight and were ably led by the their courageous Captain Elisha Crosbie who finished birdie-eagle to get a half against Momoka Kobori at the top-of-the-order. The No. 2’s Amelia Garvey and Hillary O’Connor had a fine tussle, and O’Connor went down the last with a 1up advantage. Unfortunately a three-putt by Garvey on 18 cost her a chance of a half and O’Connor won 2up. Juliana Hung got the only win for Waimairi beating Jess Crosbie 5/4, while Zhantel Weekes beat Allison Doell 2/1 for Russley. The final result 2.5-1.5 to Russley. WINS FOR RUSSLEY Russley Golf Club enhanced their proud record in Canterbury interclub golf when they all but clean swept the titles up for offer on Finals Day at Harewood Golf Club played on November 9. The clean sweep was stopped by Templeton who narrowly won and retained the Simon Cup. The day began with Woodward Cup semi-finals and Weedons were hoping to upset Christchurch in the first semi. They shuffled their order around and tried to get two wins in the middle of the order with Canterbury reps Mike Toeke and Jake Hallinan. Hallinan duly obliged but Toeke was undone by a superb round from Marcel Boet which saw Boet win 5/4. Russley won 4-2. The other semi-final between Templeton and Russley was expected to be closer and was. After nine holes Templeton had the slight advantage but Russley were too tough down the stretch and came through to win 3.5-2.5. Key matches were Owen Burgess coming from two down after nine holes to beat Sam Purdon 3/2, and Henry Bryden holding off Tom Wilson to win 1up. To the final and and a repeat of last year’s battle. Russley Manager Steve Kilpatrick made the tough call of putting his No. 6 Henry Bryden against the “unbeatable” Jordan Bakermans, allowing him to shuffle his players one down the order.

GOLF TRAILS Coringa. Coringa were expected to put up a stern challenge by including regular Woodward Cup players Nic Kay and Jason Sincock in their line-up. However Russley were a strong team right through the order and ran out winners 5.5-2.5. At No.1 Anthony Weatherhead had a fine win against Nic Kay 4/3, and he was backed up by wins to Dominic Brettkelly, Reid Hilton, Andrew Weatherhead, Adam Vining, and a half to Connor McFadzien. The Simon Cup Final was the last match on the course to finish and at one stage a play-off looked likely. Games ebbed and flowed during the afternoon, and as the final pairings neared the finish it was 2-2. At No.4 Russley youngster Lewis Gillon held a comfortable lead over Bruce Purdon until he got the wobbles near the end. Purdon missed a three footer on the final green and a chance for a half point so the momentum swung to Russley. Templeton No. 3 Patrick Werahiko won two of his last four holes to get ahead in his game against Gary Gillard and prevailed 2/1, so the match was back square 3-3. Templeton’s Glen Coughlan had John Lindsay covered most of the game and ran out a winner 2/1, requiring Peter Fox to get at least a half over Russley No.1 Simon Murphy. They went down their 17th hole all square and Murphy had a chance to go ahead when Fox found the trees off the tee. However Murphy missed the green with his approach from the middle of the fairway and couldnt get up-and-down so the hole was halved.
On the last par three 6th hole Murphy found the green about 30 feet away from the hole, but Fox hit a superb iron to ten feet under the hole to set up the crucial half point for a Templeton win. The final result 4.5-3.5 Templeton. With the weather playing its part, and the course in superb order, Finals Day was yet another celebration of interclub golf. A special thanks to volunteers who turned up to run every round of interclub in the various competitions. In particular Pam Ellis (Pollock Cup), David Silk (Simon Cup), George Engebretsen (Blank Cup), and Max Walker (Woodward Cup).

Great Golf in the South Pacific
F
or many golfers, you can’t beat a South Pacific island golf getaway. From spectacular scenery to amazing golf and mouth-watering food, golf tours of the South Pacific are a real tropical treat. Two of the more popular destinations, Fiji and Hawaii, are also home to some truly exciting Amateur golf events.
FIJI The South Pacific pro-am golf circuit started in early 1970’s with the Fiji Open as the only tournament. Now some 40 years on there are events throughout the Pacific Islands including Tahiti, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Samoa. The biggest professional event is the Fiji International, which was recently won by Australian Professional Steven Jeffress. In June each year, Fiji has five proam events. These include the Air New Zealand pro-am and Starwood Golf Classic, both played at the Natadola Bay Course and the Denarau Golf & Racquet Club’s resort course next to the Sheraton & Westin Resorts on Denarau Island. These two events give amateur golfers from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands the opportunity to play with up-and-coming young professionals and some seasoned campaigners at a very relaxed, fun tropical destination. Fiji’s biggest pro-am golf tournament is now in its 5th year. The Starwood Golf Classic (June 9 -13) with over $100,000 in professional prize money and $30,000 in amateur prizes attracts amateurs and professionals from Australia, New Zealand,
Asia, USA and across the Pacific Islands. You don’t have to be a great golfer or low handicapper to enter; you just need an official handicap. There are great amateur prizes up for grabs with the winning teams in both the teams Stableford and Gross competition— as well as the winners of the overall individual amateur stableford and gross competitions—receiving free entry and accommodation packages to come back and defend their title at the following year’s tournament, valued at over $1500 per player. All competitors play two rounds at Natadola Bay and two rounds at the resort course at Denarau Golf and Racquet Club. Accommodation for the tournament is at the Sheraton Fiji Resort which is set on the beach and only 200 meters from the Denarau golf course. The Starwood Classic has gained the reputation as great mix of being both a competitive event and a fun social occasion with gala welcome cocktail party, drinks every evening at the tournament bar and the grand finale; a spectacular prize presentation dinner with entertainment on the beach at the Sheraton Fiji Resort.
