Have you weakened, are you re-considering how to get your golf fix? H AVE you succumbed? It’s a few weeks into the new year and there have already been some good golf tournaments on the PGA Tour in the United States and the European Tour. But they haven’t been screened on Sky TV. Have you missed Sky’s coverage? Are you going through withdrawal symptons? Have you made a few discreet enquiries with Coliseum Sports Media, which is now providing golf coverage via the internet. Did you adopt a stubborn attitude when it was announced Sky would be losing its live golf cover? Did you say to yourself, no way am I paying a separate amount just to watch golf? Are you now re-thinking that attitude? Have you been down to your local Noel

Leeming store to make a couple of enquiries on how to get the internet through your television? Have you already taken the plunge and taken up the discounted subscription offer of $149 through New Zealand Golf (NZG) as a member of a golf club affiliated to NZG? Have you already worked out that $149 for a year is $12.40 for a month? Are you already experiencing full coverage of the PGA Tour, the European Tour, the Ladies PGA Tour, the Web.Com tour and the Asian Tour? Are you already telling you friends how good it is, how great it is? Are you still waiting for that perfect moment to pose the question to the other half: “Dear, you know how the golf isn’t on Sky anymore?’’

And when the reply is how much is that going to cost, are you still thinking of the best way to express $12.40 a month or are you just going to stay it’s only $12.40 a month? That’s a whole lot of questions. But there’s only one important question at this point and that is have you subscribed? A few months down the track the question will be is it worth it? It seems New Zealand is being used as a guinea pig to how the public will react to subscriber live golf coverage via the internet. If it fails it is no big deal because New Zealand is just a drop in the ocean as far as the market of the world’s major golf tours is concerned. If it succeeds it will provide the path to extending the cover on a world scale.

Toomey paves the way for Waikato’s win

L

UKE TOOMEY capped a great year when he led Waikato to victory in the New Zealand Interprovincial in Hamilton. Toomey played at No 1 for Waikato in what is the country’s premier teams’ tournament and was unbeaten in eight matches. Earlier in the year Toomey had recorded an individual highlight when winning the New Zealand Strokeplay Championship at Hastings. Waikato had already secured victory in the final of the interprovincial by the time Toomey headed down the 18th in his match with Duncan Croudis of Otago but he finished it off in style with a birdie. That gave him a 1 up victory and after rolling in the birdie putt he gave a fist pump and walked over to his teammates who were in raptures. “Pure happiness and pride,” Toomey recalled of the winning moment and honoured to carry the traditional sporting colours of the province to victory. “If you cut me open, I bleed black, red and yellow. I’m just so proud of this group of guys to be part of this team as well. This is stuff that dreams are made of.” Toomey’s perfect eight-from-eight record also earned him player of the tournament title and Waikato’s win was its ninth in the tournament that started in 1950. Toomey said it was a huge relief to know victory was in the bag as he headed down the 18th. “It was nice to relax and all the emotion poured out of me after a week where it has been pretty tense. “To win eight from eight at number one where I am playing very good players is obviously a huge honour for me and something I am hugely proud of.” Waikato beat Otago 4-1 in the final and victory was secured when its No 3 Denzel Ieremia beat Brent McEwan 2 up with a defining moment coming on the 17th where Ieremia holed a 35-foot birdie putt to go 1 up.

Earlier Nick Coxon defeated James Anstiss (4 and 3) and Sam Vincent beat Nick Borren (4 and 3) while Mark Brooks recorded Otago’s only win in the final when he defeated Matt Morris (4 and 3). Ieremia’s smile was from ear to ear when holed his long putt on the 17th. “I have never experienced anything like this in my life,” said the 18-year-old from the Hamilton Golf Club where the tournament was played. “I had been putting well all day and I thought I had a good chance with that one. I think the crowd on the bank willed that one in. It was an awesome putt and an awesome feeling to hear the cheer from the locals.” Ieremia was looking forward to seeing their team photo up on the wall of the Waikato Golf office as they followed in the footsteps of the likes of Phil Tataurangi and Steven Alker as winning team members. “There have been some pretty good names on that trophy, especially from Waikato, so it is great to add our name to that list of winners,” Ieremia added. The big-hitting Nick Coxon said it was an awesome feeling and one of his best achievements in golf. “We haven’t won this thing in a long time and it was good to play well when we needed to,” said the 18-year-old from the Riverside Golf Club. Coxon said his convincing win over James Anstiss was a result of hitting a lot of fairways and greens and “putting him under a lot of pressure”. “We haven’t even come close to winning this in the years that I have been involved so this is unbelievable,” Coxon said. Croudis remained proud of Otago’s effort. “We tried our hearts out and that is all you can ask for,” said the 22-year-old from the Otago Golf Club. “The boys were phenomenal all week. It is a bit of a hollow feeling to come up short but the boys are still stoked.”

Luke Toomey capped off a perfect week in style. PHOTO: BW MEDIA

“Waikato had some good young golfers and with their crowd on their home track they were tough to beat.” His teammate McEwan was a standout in the middle of the order. He paid a fitting tribute to Ieremia for the way he played. “He is a good young player and he has got a big future,” said the 33-year-old. “He got away from me in the middle

when he made four birdies in five holes and then that putt on 17 -- well, you can’t stop things like that happening. It was a great putt and a big moment in the match.” McEwan said he was “stoked” with his week where he won seven of eight matches. “It would have been nice to get that last one as well but we can be proud of the way we fought hard this week.”

Another four in a row for Auckland

A

UCKLAND is again in line to become the first district to win the New Zealand Women’s Interprovincial five times in a row. Auckland racked up its fourth win in a row at the Riverside Golf Club in Hamilton when it beat North Harbour by 3-1/2 to 1-1/2 in the final. It was the second time Auckland had won the title four times in a row. It was previously achieved in 1979 at the same venue but a fifth win the following year did not eventuate. North Harbour gave Auckland a run for its money in the final but Auckland prevailed in the critical moments to provide it with its 22nd win in the history of the competition. Siyi Keh, one of three sisters in the Auckland side, was named player of the tournament with 7-1/2 wins from eight games. “It is actually the best feeling ever,” said Siyi Keh who was making her debut in the event. “I was undefeated the whole week so it took my golf to a new level. “It is a cool feeling to have us three sisters in the team. It is great to win with them and this is something we’ll all remember for a long time.” Keh, playing at No 5, delivered a defining moment in her match with Julitta Lam when she chipped in from the rough on the 17th and went on to halve

the game. That gave Auckland an early advantage after Britteny Dryland, playing at No 4 for Auckland, had deafeated Ela Grimwood 4 and 3. North Harbour rekindled some hope when its No 2 Sai Ma defeated Wenyung Keh 2 and 1 but those hopes were dashed when Joanna Kim restored Auckland’s advantage by beating 12-year-old sensation Bohyun Park 1 up. That meant that North Harbour No 1 Rica Tse had to win again Munchin Keh to keep her team alive in the final. Munchin Keh won the 16th hole to be all square and then Tse found trouble on 17 to gift Auckland the title. Keh held on to win 1 up. North Harbour No 2 Ma, who managed her team’s only win in the final, was proud of her team’s effort as they contested their first final since 2012. “We are the first team in many years to actually give Auckland a good challenge,” Ma said. “Auckland might have been a bit lucky to win but they are a good side and they take their chances. I am so proud of this North Harbour team. We are the underdogs but next year we will try again to get the trophy back.” This year’s interprovincial will be held at the Ashburton Golf Club.

Late pairing prevails in tense final A were relatively easy with wins of 4 and 2 against Lynne Ryder and Linley Trapp (Harewood) and 5 and 3 against Wendy Parr and Catherine Trott (Ashburton). In their semi-final, 17 holes were required before they prevailed to win 3 and 1 against Chris Brodie and Carole Steele from Charteris Bay. It was an almost allWeedons final with their opponents Karen Paul and Christene Prouting also from the Weedons club. It turned into a dramatic affair with the match all square after 18 holes and it went to the second extra hole before Guest and Heffernan prevailed. Next November’s event will be held at the Whakatane Golf Club in the Bay of Plenty.

Golf and green spaces, what’s the best mix? W

HAT value do we put on the green space of a golf course? The reason I ask this question comes as a result of discussions the Auckland City Council is having over the future of the Chamberlain Park golf course. I am writing this article wearing two hats. I am wearing one as a golf professional and looking at the future of the game and how to grow it. The other hat I wear is as a Dunedin City councillor and thinking about how I would approach the issues around the future of Chamberlain Park. Chamberlain Park is a great golfing space and whatever happens to it, I feel that it has to be retained as a golfing area. But does it have to be a full size 18-hole golf course? Is there a shortage of 18-hole golf courses in Auckland? Is it the best use of the land? Looking at the Auckland golf market from an outsider’s perspective, I actually believe that Chamberlain Park, as an 18-hole facility is no longer viable. But it could become an excellent facility that is active in growing the game and exposing more people to golf. My vision for a golfing facility on this land, that would tick the box for the masses, would be a 9-hole golf course with a driving range as well as a four-hole short golf course. So why would this change be the best way to grow the game and keep golfers playing? The first reason is that many golfers are struggling for time to play 18-holes. Playing 9 holes only takes two hours and more people get the opportunity to play the course.

Include a driving range, where people can come and give golf a try, is a great way to get a taste for the game. From there you can introduce a new golfer to four short holes and they quickly learn the concepts and rules of the game. This is a perfect breeding ground for new golfers and ladies and juniors will really benefit from this type of start. It will also give social golfers a better place to regularly stay active with their games. I really believe that this format would result in a more active golf facility. For example, a busy day at the current Chamberlain Park facility would have up to 300 golfers coming through the door. A revamped facility of the type I have described could have closer to a 1000 people coming through the door and they would come more often. With my councillor hat on, I would be looking at what is the best return on investment for the rate payers of the

city. What would they benefit most from and what is the best balance? Auckland does struggle with green-space usage and sports fields so should some of the golf course be used for other sports? I believe yes. However, in doing so there needs to be an investment in the clubhouse facility so it becomes a sport hub; so it is multi-functional and can be an asset to many. This is why I think investing in an artificial turf sports field that could be used for soccer, touch rugby, or act as a practice field for other sports would be a great addition. I also support portioning off a small section of the land for a development that could fund the cost of any redevelopment and improvements resulting in zero cost to the city’s ratepayers. Today’s cities face many challenges and I am sorry to say that sometimes people have to accept change from the status quo for a better outcome for the greater group.

A new year brings new hopes of golfing dreams A N epic seven-hole playoff between Greg Chalmers and Adam Scott in the recent Australian PGA Championship may have heralded the end of the regular 2014 PGA of Australasia Tour, but for many hopefuls it meant the start of a new journey up the slippery ladder of qualifying school. Starting last month, 170 golfers, including 16 New Zealanders, went through stage one Australasian Q-School at three Australian venues. Of these, around 60 would have progressed to stage two at Victoria Golf Club (January 6-9) to compete with those exempt from the first stage, and attempt to gain a full PGA of Australasia Tour card. As with other Q-Schools around the world, the process is a prolonged test of skill, nerve and luck – but most will be disappointed or at best secure a card with limited status and restricted starts during the 2015 season. For those who miss out, or who want to play mainly in New Zealand, there is the PGA of New Zealand Tour school at Taupo’s centennial course, over three rounds on January 15 and 16. This too is no bargain as shown in 2014, when no player broke par and only eight tour cards were handed out at the end of two brutal days of windswept golf. Of the eight graduates that year, only three retained their cards by finishing in the top 25 of the Mondiale NZ PGA order of merit – the rest had the choice of going back to Q-School or finding an easier way of earning a living. The same process is repeated around the world as thousands of golfers try and find their way through the

Q-School labyrinth each year to gain a recognised tour card – the Holy Grail being of course the PGA Tour in the United States. With higher money the pathway becomes even more difficult. The PGA Tour no longer has a Q-School of its own, entry now being through up to three stages of Web.Com Q-School and then (if successful) a whole year of playing on one of the world’s toughest circuits to finish in the top 25 on that tour. It can be done, as our three New Zealand representatives (Danny Lee, Steven Alker and Tim Wilkinson) can attest, although recent research indicates that the correlation between Q-School and success on tour is not high. The implication is that golfers are so broken or used up by the whole Q-School experience, where a single shot can literally ruin their chances for at least a further 12 months, that they have little left in the tank when they finally get on tour. By contrast, those who can avoid Q-School, by winning a tournament as an amateur or sponsor’s invite seem to do better, Jordan Spieth being a good recent example. However as they say, hope springs eternal, and it only takes one week to make a significant difference to a player’s career and indeed their lives. The top 10 players on the Mondiale NZ PGA order of merit will all get a start in the Holden NZ PGA Championship at Remuera in Auckland in March and the chance to win more in one week than they probably made in the whole of the previous

year. Victory would give them two years exemption on the PGA Tour of Australasia and a shot at purses of $1 million or more, as well as significantly boosting their world ranking. Once again another good week or two could lead to the chance to compete in World Golf Championship events, or the Open Championship. So on that basis it’s entirely possible to draw a straight line from the relatively humble beginnings of the NZ PGA Q-School in Taupo to treading the fairways of some of the most famous courses in the world alongside professional golf’s aristocracy. It’s that dream that keeps them going through the dark days and financial struggles of the average pro golfer. Good luck to all of them: may your dream and passion turn into reality.

Adams Golf - new Idea Tech Hybrid Irons

A

DAMS GOLF, makers of the No. 1 Hybrid Irons in Golf, recently announced its new Idea Tech Hybrid Iron set – designed specifically for golfers with slower swing speeds (below 85 mph) who want to launch the ball high and achieve greater distance than traditional irons.* “From the highest lofted iron to the lowest lofted hybrid, each club in the new Idea Tech hybrid iron set is intended to enhance the golfer’s enjoyment of the game,” said Michael Fox, Director of Product Category Management. “This set was specifically made for the golfer who doesn’t generate a lot of speed, but wants to experience the thrill of hitting high and straight launching golf shots. The engineering of this set makes this type of performance attainable for golfers with slower swing speeds.” By adding an external 24-gram weight to the back of the hybrids (3-5), engineers were able to position the center of gravity lower and further back than any previous Adams hybrid. This design gives slower swing-speed players higher launch and increased spin, helping them keep the ball airborne longer. Introduced in the previous generation, Idea Tech Hybrid Irons (6-PW) feature an enhanced wrap-around slot that stretches from the toe across the sole of the club and into the crown. This enhanced slot

design expands the sweet spot across the entire face, delivering better performance on off-center strikes. In addition, a refined barbell-shaped slot on the crown reduces stress on the face while delivering enhanced ball speeds upon impact, resulting in the fastest and longest Adams Idea hybrid and iron combination in history. The set features a new progressive shaft design – wherein shaft tip diameters get thinner towards the lower end of the set. This technology makes it easier to gener-

Variation needed in playoffs Dear sir, No doubt, the recent Australian PGA Championship at Royal Pines will merit a mention in the next edition of Golfer Pacific. Therefore, I would like to make a comment, with which you may or may not agree. A seven-hole playoff certainly made for great viewing. But, even though Adam Scott didn’t win in the end, he must have been a red hot favourite to come out on top, mainly because of his advantage off the tee over his two fellow contestants. This advantage, I believe, was the reason that both Chalmers and Ormsby felt intimidated and used driver each time but found the right-side fairway bunker. I imagine the fact that the playoff was contested only on the 18th hole was, mainly, for TV coverage purposes and possibly from a sponsors and corporate perspective as well. That being said, I wondered about the possibility of staying on the same hole (the 18th) but, instead, altering the tee location once the first playoff hole had been played and a result had not been determined. For instance, a pre-determined secondary tee location could have been, say, approximately a good par-3 length (170m or so) which would make the playoff more interesting but, more importantly, would not disadvantage the shorter hitters so much. Then, if there was still no winner, play would revert back to the previous tee. Tee locations would alternate until a winner had been found. Bill Lowe North Shore Golf Club.

TRAVEL

Brand new Malaysian golf course slices through the competition J ust two weeks after opening its doors, the fabulous new Els Club Teluk Datai on the island of Langkawi has been named World’s Best New Golf Course and Best New Golf Couse in Asia at the inaugural World Golf Awards in Portugal. The 18-hole, par 72 championship course was designed by South African golfing great Ernie Els, who went out of his way to ensure that the course is not only a terrific challenge for players but also one of the most spectacular and beautiful places to swing a set of clubs on the planet. The course is set on 47 hectares amid 10 million-year-old rainforest with the Machinchang mountains providing a stunning backdrop. It stretches all the way to Datai Bay (voted by National Geographic as one of the top 10 beaches in the world) and the Andaman Sea. Traditional bunkers have been replaced by natural hazards in the form of tropical vegetation and streams, so a round on this course will improve your mental wellbeing

as well as your game! And it’s adjacent to the award-winning, five-star Datai Langkawi, which regularly top polls as one of the world’s best resorts and is a sublime spot to reconnect with what’s important ¬– even if you don’t play golf. The Els Club and its unprecedented leap into golfing’s big time raises Malaysia’s stakes as a true international golf and leisure destination and in about a year from now, this success will hopefully be repeated with the opening of two new golfing properties in the southern state of Johor: the 27-hole Els Club Desaru Coast and the 18-hole Els Club Desaru Valley in 2016. Add to that other magnificent courses, such as the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, the Kota Permai Golf and Country Club, the Mines Resort and Golf Club (both just outside KL) and Horizon Hills Resort in Johor, and Malaysia is definitely a mustvisit destination for devotees of the smallball game. ONE of Golfer Pacific’s columnists Andrew Whiley is retiring as the golf professional at Chisholm Park Golf Club in Dunedin. Whiley, 48, will finish on April 30 after 12 years but will continue his association with the club as a playing member. Whiley told the Otago Daily Times newspaper that one of his best achievements was helping get into the top 25 ranked courses in the country along with establishing a strong Monday night programme, which New Zealand Golf recognised as ‘’probably the most successful twilight golf programme in the country’’. Whiley, who was raised in Wellington but spent more than a decade overseas before moving to Dunedin in 2003, is looking forward to having weekends free but will continue his role as a Dunedin City councillor and picking up an 80-hour per month job. Whiley has been on the New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association board for seven years and is the New Zealand Open caddy master.

New Zealand is blessed with many Coastal and Country Golf gems from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Our many cities have classic signature courses, complimented by superb Links courses within respective districts. Below are our favourite holes for you to tackle this Summer. CLARKS BEACH GoLf CLuB 3rd Par-3 | 118m

CLARKS BeACh Golf Club is situated on the shore of the Manukau harbour, just 40 minutes from Auckland International Airport. Widely regarded as one of the best country courses in New Zealand, its Pohutakawa- lined fairways make a brilliant display in the summer months. The club’s third hole is worth a visit alone. The 118m par-three poses an interesting

tee shot over a newly constructed large pond. A straight shot will miss the large trees to the right and a bunker to the left, not too many problems on a calm day. With spectacular water views in the background, and the green positioned on a small knoll, the wind factor greatly determines the club selection and can have a dramatic effect on any given day.

Pegasus Golf Course is a beautiful parklands-style par 72 – 18 hole championship golf course close to the centre of Pegasus Town. Its careful design, impeccable fairways, manicured greens, stunning water features, natural wetlands, and surrounding mountain ranges afford superb play and exquisite views from every shot. The 15th hole, with its split fairway, offers a delightfully menacing challenge. A solid drive down the left hand side should carry the deep vegetated gully, leaving a mere pitch onto the green. But with the

fairway sloping to the gully it’s not for the faint hearted. Don’t let your eye be caught by the water feature – with water running the entire length of the right hand side you’re left with a narrow landing strip for your Option B. However, even with a gully yet to cross this is by far an easier approach shot to this undulating green. Pegasus offers a true golfing experience. With four options of tees at each hole, golfers of every level will enjoy an excellent challenge and a game to remember. GOLFER PACIFIC January 2015  15

The Alexandra, Arrowtown, Cromwell, Queenstown and Wanaka Golf Clubs are all within one hour of each other and provide a varied and interesting trip before and after your round of golf. The event now in its fourth year has been a phenomenal success. “Our first classic in April 2012 attracted a field of 242 and from then on we have been thrilled with our ability to attract good fields, obviously from comments and reports made these golfers thoroughly enjoyed their week and in 2013 our field was 428 and in 2014 was 472,”Said Tournament Director John Roche. “Our intention is to close entries once 500 have been received, this will enable us to keep to our basic ideology of not overcrowding the golf courses, with 100 players on each course each day, starting play off multiple tees at 10.00am the rounds should be played in reasonable time,” he said. John Roche explained the principles behind the event. “The Autumn Classic is not just another golf tournament but rather a true golfing classic for genuine club golfers. The organisers run the event and do all the work and planning. Players relax, enjoy the golf and the companionship of other like minded competitive golfers in an environment that has to be seen to believe; that is “central” in the Autumn! The course is Greymouth Golf Club acknowledged as having the best manicured fairways of the 18 hole courses on the West Coast, and while not long at about 5600 metres it provides an interesting test of golf. Most of the Club’s major tournaments are played in the period from January to March, starting with the New Year’s Day tournament, followed by the Westland Classic in mid February, and as one leg of the West Coast four course challenge in early March. Hole No 8 is the club’s signature hole. While not long, the 329 metre par 4 dog-leg left has an out-of -bounds on the left. There are also two strategically positioned mature kahikatea to manoeuvre past in the fairway. Sir Bob Charles has described this hole as one of his top 18 holes of golf in New Zealand. hyun Park (Gulf Harbour), Ela Grimwood (Gulf Harbour), Julitta Lam (Muriwai) and playing reserve Krystal Hu (Gulf Harbour) delivered a fantastic performance for the district in the Women’s National Interprovincial Teams Championship held in Hamilton at the Lochiel Golf Club from the 9th-13th of December. The team finished 2nd out of the 14 teams in attendance and posted some simply fantastic results over

the week. In the 6 games of pool play their only set back was a narrow 3-2 loss to Wellington and the team also had the amazing result of defeating 3 time defending champions Auckand 3-2. This was the first time the Auckland side had been beaten by any team in 3 years. North Harbour would go forward to defeat Bay of Plenty 3 ½ to 1 ½ in the semi-final on Saturday morning and once again face Auckland on Saturday afternoon for the title. Unfortunately they were not able to replicate their pool game performance and although the match was close all the way to the end it was Auckland who prevailed with a 3 ½ to 1 ½ win. Overall however it was fantastic effort for a team that had a huge amount of experience but also some real youth in the team, the youngest being Bohyun who is only 12 years old and is following in the footsteps of Lydia Ko. The women’s game is certainly very strong in the North Harbour region and the team is already focussing their sights on the tournament in Southland in 2015.

RETIRING BOARD MEMBERS ACCEPT A SMALL TOKEN OF APPRECIATION FROM WAITAKERE MEMBERS WAITAKERE GOLF CLUB held another very successful Closing Day on Saturday 13th December. The usual antics and team fancy dress ensured everyone had a good time in the team ambrose competition.

On the Saturday, Stewart Stephen (Whakatane) was the only player to shoot par and held the lead after round 2 with 140, followed closely by Glen Goldfinch and Jason Madden on 141. Sunday saw very blustery winds in fine weather, and this was reflected in the scores where Dell Bain (Whitford Park) was the only player to shoot par, with Gareth Chitty 73 leading the rest of the field. In the final tally of the 3 rounds, Gareth Chitty won on 5 over par 215, from Glen Goldfinch and Stewart Stephen on 216. A par 5 measuring 470m off the blue tees, Mike used a 3 wood on his second shot from approx 210m out and said afterwards with a grin “it never looked like missing”. Another achievement was the oldest entrant Merv Michael of Whangamata shooting 2 under his age with a 79 on the Friday. A well-attended prize giving ceremony followed on Sunday afternoon. Sponsors and local businesses combined with the Whangamata Golf Club to build a prize list worth in excess of $14,000. Tournament director Murray Hill thanked the many volunteer helpers for their part in running the tournament in a very smooth and efficient manner. More than 30 members of the golf club acted as spotters and general helpers over the 3 day tournament.

GOLF TRAILS FRIDAY TWILGHT GOLF AT MOUNT MAUNGANUI ANOTHER 50+ group of players enjoyed a great evening of golf followed by a lively clubhouse social time and meal on Friday, December 5. Very good 9 hole scores were again a feature with the top 6 scores in the men and the women’s divisions within one point. Scoring as very even across both divisions. A number of regular players featured with good scores but there was a good spread of new winners. Eric McPherson with 22 points won on a count-back from Gary Hosking in the men’s’ division. Gillian Lees with 21 points managed to hold off 4 other women players on 20 points. Great spread of 9 Spot prizes was a feature of the evening coupled with the impressive Hamper win by Jimmy Napier (the Club Professional). 9 spot, competition and raffle prizes were sponsored by Smiths Sports Shoes. Spot Prizes(Top 3 of 9): Derek Beard/Gary Hosking/Frank Hunter 45 players played the pre-Christmas twilight on 19th December – on the day following the annual Mount Maunganui Golf Club Pro/Am, and a course that was heavily flooded and unplayable on the Wednesday prior. Josh Geary won the Pro/Am in a fourway play-off involving Fraser Wilkin, Mark Brown and Doug Hollaway, (all with 68’s) on a course that showed little if any signs of the torrential rain 24 hours earlier. Three players (Mark Brown, Josh Geary and Nick Gillespie) having just arrived back from the Australian PGA at The Pines – Gold Coast. 37 Pro’s competed and enjoyed the very impressive greens and fairways.

GOLF TRAILS MANAWATU WANGANUI

LACHIE THE CHAMP AT MARTON MARTON GOLF CLUB member Lachie McDonald recently won the Senior Men’s Championship for the 5th year in succession. This is the first time in the Club’s 100 year history that a senior man has achieved five years in a row. Lachie has had a rewarding year on the local and national scene. He finished the season as number one player on the Manawatu/Wanganui Order of Merit (for the 2nd year running) after he won the Challenge Cup (Manawatu-Wanganui Strokeplay) and the Manawatu Open. He played No.1 for his province against Wellington in August and in October at Hastings (Shand Cup) versus Hawkes Bay, Taranaki and Wellington. He went through

all of these matches unbeaten. On the National scene he has had a consistent year, finishing most tournaments in the top ten, with the highlight being a second place finish at the Charlestour- Harewood Open in Christchurch where half the field are professional golfers. Here he shot rounds of 73 66 74 67.In the 2013 Toro Men’s Interprovincial at North Shore Golf Club Lachie was named Player of the Tournament after winning 6.5 matches from 8 and helped his team win for the first time in 49 years. This team recently won the ‘Team of the Year’ award at the Manawatu Sports Awards. In defence of the Toro at this year’s Interprovincial at Hamilton the Manawatu-Wanganui Team made it through to the Semi-Final where they were defeated by Otago. Lachie had a solid week of golf, winning five matches from seven. Lachie will be heading to Australia in January to contest the Australian Amateur and the New South Wales Amateur in Sydney and the Lake Maquarie Amateur in Newcastle for which the Marton Golf Club wish him all the best.

OTAGO/SOUTHLAND

2014 JUNIOR OOM TOUR HEADS TO FINAL EVENT OTAGO No 2 Jamie Anstiss (pictured) turned interprovincial form into win-

ning form as the Queenstown golfer blitzed the field of Otago age-group representatives in the Island Park Junior Open in December. He carded a 6-under 66 around the tricky Wa ld ronv i l le course in fine but cool conditions to claim the title by five shots from Jake Bleach (St Clair) and Harry Smith (Otago), both of whom registered even-par rounds of 71. Nick James (Island Park) ensured he will be one to watch in 2015, especially with Island Park entering the senior A pennant ranks next year, by carding 73 to finish fourth, while Connor Jamison (Chisholm Park) finished fifth with a round of 74. Anstiss finished his second interprovincial less than a week ago in Hamilton and threatened the Island Park course record of 62 set by member Shane Stuart after turning 4-under at the halfway stage. Any momentum gained after a birdie at the par-five 12th was quickly abolished by consecutive bogeys on the 13th and 14th before resurrecting the round with backto-back birdies on the 15th and 16th. In the battle for runner-up, Bleach played solid golf, recording 16 pars, a birdie and a bogey for his round, while Smith finished strongly, playing the last four holes in 2-under. 

GOLF TRAVEL

A golfing adventure in the South Pacific F

OR many golfers, you can’t beat a South Pacific island golf getaway. From spectacular scenery to amazing golf and mouth-watering food, golf tours of the South Pacific are a real tropical treat. Two of the more popular destinations, Fiji and Hawaii, are also home to some truly exciting Amateur golf events.

FIJI THE South Pacific pro-am golf circuit started in early 1970’s with the Fiji Open as the only tournament. Now some 40 years on there are events throughout the Pacific Islands including Tahiti, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Samoa. The biggest professional event is the Fiji International, which was recently won by Australian Professional Steven Jeffress. In June each year, Fiji has five proam events. These include the Air New Zealand pro-am and Starwood Golf Classic, both played at the Natadola Bay Course and the Denarau Golf & Racquet Club’s resort course next to the Sheraton & Westin Resorts on Denarau Island. These two events give amateur golfers from Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands the opportunity to play with up-and-coming young professionals and some seasoned campaigners at a very relaxed, fun tropical destination. Fiji’s biggest pro-am golf tournament is now in its 5th year. The Starwood Golf Classic (June 9 -13) with over $100,000 in professional prize money and $30,000 in amateur prizes attracts amateurs and professionals from Australia, New Zealand,

Asia, USA and across the Pacific Islands. You don’t have to be a great golfer or low handicapper to enter; you just need an official handicap. There are great amateur prizes up for grabs with the winning teams in both the teams Stableford and Gross competition— as well as the winners of the overall individual amateur stableford and gross competitions—receiving free entry and accommodation packages to come back and defend their title at the following year’s tournament, valued at over $1500 per player. All competitors play two rounds at Natadola Bay and two rounds at the resort course at Denarau Golf and Racquet Club. Accommodation for the tournament is at the Sheraton Fiji Resort which is set on the beach and only 200 meters from the Denarau golf course. The Starwood Classic has gained the reputation as great mix of being both a competitive event and a fun social occasion with gala welcome cocktail party, drinks every evening at the tournament bar and the grand finale; a spectacular prize presentation dinner with entertainment on the

beach at the Sheraton Fiji Resort.

Hawaii HAWAII is the golf resort capital of the world. The big Island of Hawaii is just a short 30-minute flight from Honolulu, where you will find some of the best resort courses anywhere in the world, designed by the best in the game: Nicklaus, Trent Jones Sr & Jr, Palmer, Weiskopf and Dye. Add to this the beautiful five-star beach front hotels, perfect climate and a tournament everyone can play in, and you’ve found heaven on earth. During the International golf Week (August 22-29) you get to play The Resort Course Championship, which is a great competition open to women and men with official handicaps and will be played on five of the best course you will find anywhere, Mauna Lani North, Hapuna Beach, Waikoloa Kings Course, Mauna Lani South and Mauna Kea. All five courses are within 15 minutes’ drive of your hotel. You don’t have to be a great golfer to join in the fun as the tournament will be played in different handicap divisions and there will be a scratch competition for the guns. Golf professionals will be on hand for free coaching on the range prior to play each day. Pacific Golf Management’s International Golf Week package includes 7 nights twin share accommodation at the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel (ocean view rooms); Daily full breakfast; 5 Rounds of golf including cart at Mauna Kea, Hapuna, Waikoloa Kings, Mauna Lani North &

South courses; Range balls before play each day, PGA golf professional tips daily; Entry into the Hawaii Resort Course Championship; Welcome function at Hapuna Beach Hotel; Nightly drinks, one hour each night at the tournament bar during the tournament (beer, wine soft drinks); Player gift pack; Final night gala prize presentation dinner and drinks; All transport to and from golf courses during the tournament plus return Airport transfers and all taxes. This is a great all inclusive 8-day tour package is only US$2550.00 for golfers and US $1585.00 non- players. Extra nights US$157.00 per person twin share includes breakfast. Optional tour extensions available to Maui and Waikiki. All the tournaments and tours are organised and run by Richard Ellis and his team from Pacific Golf Management, one of Australasia’s most experienced golf event and tour organisers with over 25 years in the business.
