ADVERTORIAL

Volt just got bigger NIKE GOLF UNVEILS THE NEW VAPOR SPEED DRIVER THE Vapor Speed driver generates a higher launch angle with lower spin, creating pure distance. Volt just got bigger in Nike Golf’s new Vapor Franchise of drivers. Fresh out of The Oven, Nike’s Vapor Speed driver has the largest and most stable chassis of the new Vapor drivers. Black on the crown with the distinctive volt in the cavity back and Compression Channel, the Vapor Speed driver promotes a higher launch angle with lower spin. “We’ve reengineered the chassis of the Vapor Speed by sloping the crown more from face to the back and creating a deeper face,” said Nate Radcliffe, Director of Engineering for Nike Golf. “This moves the center of gravity projection toward the center of the face and significantly

reduces spin to launch ratio versus the Covert 2.0.” Like the recently released Vapor Pro driver, the Vapor Speed driver blends three key technologies: Nike’s new FlyBeam-reinforced Covert Cavity Back design, a reengineered Compression Channel and FlexLoft 2. All of these are vital to the golf athlete driven to maximize distance and consistency within his or her desired flight window. “We added FlyBeams to the Covert Cavity Back to drive frequency-tuned compliance into the Compression Channel,” said Radcliffe. “The new channel enhances the trampoline effect observed on the NexCOR face with a springboard design that accentuates ball speed on hits struck across the entire face. The end result is better sound, feel, consistency and distance.” FlexLoft 2 allows the golf

athlete the functionality of five lofts and three face angles within 15 different settings. The new, improved system is five grams (30 percent) lighter without compromising function. The redistribution of mass creates more stability, better launch conditions and faster swing speeds. Another benefit of FlexLoft 2 is its forward and backward compatibility. Golfers with previous generations of Covert can use shafts with the original adaptor in the new head or vice versa.

Vapor Hybrids THE VAPOR FLEX AND VAPOR SPEED HYBRIDS CREATE MORE DISTANCE WITH BETTER LAUNCH CONDITIONS NIKE GOLF’S visually bold and functionally refined Vapor design has now extended to hybrid clubs. Completing Nike Golf’s new Vapor line of woods are the new Vapor Flex and Vapor Speed Hybrids, each highlighted by an eyecatching flash of volt in the cavity back and Compression Channel. The new Vapor Flex hybrids feature FlexLoft 2, a lower centre of gravity, and lower, straighter leading edges based upon athlete feedback. A FlyBeam-reinforced Covert Cavity Back directs impact energy to the reengineered compression channel for increased ball speed across the face. The engineering team at The Oven reshaped the Vapor Flex hybrid chassis to allow for more consistent impact and improved launch conditions. “The Vapor Flex hybrids were engineered for speed,

versatility, and forgiveness as demanded by our athletes,” said Nate Radcliffe, Director of Engineering for Nike Golf. “Leading edges are straighter and tighter to the turf while a lighter FlexLoft 2 and sloped crown has significantly lowered center of gravity to produce improved launch conditions.” By adjusting the FlexLoft 2 mechanism in the Vapor Flex hybrids, golf athletes can tune loft and face angle to optimize distance and shot shape during the fitting process. The new, improved system is five grams (30%)

lighter without compromising function. The redistribution of mass creates more stability, better launch conditions and faster swing speeds. Another benefit of FlexLoft 2 is its forward and backward compatibility. Golfers with previous generations of Covert can use shafts with the original adaptor in the new head or vice versa. The Vapor Speed hybrids feature a unique design that engineers at The Oven call “Linear Progression.” The longer hybrids feature a larger body and shallower face and progress to a

sleek body and deep face on the short hybrids. This progression allows for more forgiveness and speed on long hybrids, while yielding shot-making accuracy and workability on shorter hybrids. “The Vapor Speed hybrids are engineered for speed, increased trajectory and forgiveness,” said Radcliffe. “Athletes looking to maximize and control trajectory from a variety of lies will benefit from the powerful combination of these signature technologies.” To achieve increased speed and optimal launch conditions across the face, all Vapor hybrids feature Nike’s FlyBeam reinforced cavity back with a reengineered Compression Channel. The combination stiffens the Covert Cavity in the back of the club, while accentuating the spring-like effect across the face to return energy to the golf ball.

Australian Open teaser has me teased I HAVE rarely had a reaction to anything I have written than the column I wrote for the January edition of Golfer Pacific. The column was all about live golf coverage switching from Sky TV to the internet. This represented a big change for New Zealand golf fans. We had just got used to watching the world’s greatest players being screened on our televisions on a weekly basis and then someone goes and changes it all. To be fair I did not watch a lot of the European Tour because it was usually being played in the middle of the night in our time. But I did watch a lot of the PGA Tour, the world’s richest golf circuit, and that was because of the time factor. It was almost always on during the morning when there was not a lot else doing. And because the final round coverage was almost always on a Monday morning New Zealand time that was perfect – I don’t work Monday mornings and more importantly I don’t play golf Monday mornings. I got to know more and more of the PGA Tour players and my admiration grew for how good they were. But from the day the coverage switched

from television to internet I went back to the wilderness. The day after the PGA Tour’s first tournament of the year, when internet coverage took over, I remember reading a paragraph in the morning newspaper to say so and so won the so and so tournament. At that point it dawned on me that I would normally have watched several hours of the tournament, especially the final round on the Monday morning. Instead I saw nothing and basically forgot it was on. And how much have I watched in the interim? The answer was none – until the final day of the Australian Women’s Open in Melbourne at the end of last month. Coliseum Sports, the provider of golf’s internet coverage, had for some reason decided to allow New Zealanders to watch it for free. There was a registration process but even for a computer dummy like myself I was able to complete it with little problem and in little time. I only watched the final stages of the final round but with Lydia Ko right in contention that’s all I wanted. I watched on a computer and the picture was fine. There was a little buffering but it was tolerable. This was my first experience of watch-

ing sport on a computer and guess what? It wasn’t too bad. This all leads up to the response I had from my January column about the change to internet coverage. I had several emails of complaints from readers about the changeover. To put that in perspective we hardly get any correspondence from anybody regarding anything. Suddenly there were several and all on the same subject. Some cited technical difficulties and to be fair that is above my head. My friends often tell me most things are above my head because I only stand 5ft 4in. But if the technical difficulties can be overcome then internet coverage may be the way of the future. At the time of writing I still had not subscribed to Coliseum Sports. But I have borrowed some money from my wife and purchased a new computer. It only took me a few days to learn how to turn it on and a couple how to turn it off but if I can take the next step and get it to project pictures onto the television screen then I might just press the confirm button for payment to Coliseum Sports. But that, of course, will mean another loan, darling.

Canadian with strong Kiwi ties wins NZ Seniors By Paul Gueorgieff

T

HE New Zealand Seniors’ Championship was won by a Canadian. That sentence alone would have many readers tempted to turn the page but please read on. Firstly, the fact that Martin Holman is Canadian means he isn’t Australian. That’s a plus. We get tired of Aussies winning our big events. Secondly, Holman is married to a New Zealander. That virtually makes him a Kiwi. Thirdly, Holman and his Christchurch wife Patrice live half the year in New Zealand. Holman loves the country and our golf courses. Doesn’t that line always win us over? The other half of the year he and Patrice return to Canada to enjoy the northern hemisphere summer. Holman first came to New Zealand in 2000 on a holiday, joined the Christchurch Golf Club at Shirley where he met Patrice in the pro shop. How romantic is that? They have now been married eight years and it was Patrice who was Martin’s caddy when he won the New Zealand Seniors at the Nelson Golf Club last month. Couldn’t have done it without her, he says. That’s another romantic line. I hope this story is not getting too gooey. Let’s get back to some facts. Holman won the New Zealand Seniors by one shot from Michael Barltrop of Auckland with scores of 73, 67 and 73 on the par 71 course over the three days of the tournament. The oldies can’t do a fourth day as they are all but dead by then. The New Zealand Seniors is for golfers aged 50 or more. Holman just scrapped in at age 62. His second day effort was clearly the round that paved the way for victory. He had one bogey and five birdies which was the equal lowest round of the tournament. Holman was paired with Barltrop on the final day and following the 10th hole they

were five shots ahead of their nearest rivals. “It was pretty much matchplay from then on,’’ Holman recalled to Golfer Pacific. But the game swung clearly in Holman’s favour when Barltrop went bogey, bogey, double bogey on holes 12, 13 and 14. “That sort of helped me,’’ Holman said with just a tiniest hint of understatement. Holman went to the 18th with a two-shot lead and said bogey was all he played for. “The only trouble on 18 was long, so I hit driver and a wedge short.’’ Holman chipped to within three feet but left his putt three inches short before claiming victory. “I lagged a three-foot putt,’’ was Holman’s perfect explanation at leaving a three-footer short. “All I wanted was a three-inch putt. It’s tough at our age, you get nervous, ’’ he added, with tongue in cheek. Holman’s light-hearted comments were put aside though when it came to explaining what the win meant to him. “I’m thrilled. I was honoured to win it. It will be the best thing I’ll ever win. I still haven’t come down from the clouds and I still get nervous when I think about it.’’ The win also represented something of a turnaround in recent form. “I had been playing shocking golf. I’d been in Australia for 10 weeks and the best I shot was 76.’’ What was the difference? “I was swinging a little better, I had a good putter and I had a little bit of luck.’’ Holman described the Nelson course as “dirty’’ with its many bunkers. “They were bunkers everywhere. But I only hit two bunkers over the three days and I did not have a three-putt. On the last day I only hit two fairways but I avoided the bunkers. “You just couldn’t relax out there. With the bunkers, if you got in one you were looking at a double (bogey).’’ One of the reasons Martin enjoys the New Zealand summer is the long daylight hours.

“A lot of people in Canada winter in the desert (Arizona) but it’s a better light down here. “New Zealand – like Canada – is a spectacular place and it has some of the cheapest golf in the world. It’s unbelievably reasonable.’’ Holman is a member of the Victoria Golf Club in the Canadian province of British Columbia. He was reluctant to reveal the annual subscriptions rates of the Victoria Golf Club. “I would get into trouble if I told you that.’’ Holman worked in real estate for 35 years including development, re-zoning and rental properties. He started playing golf at age 11 but only because an older brother did so. The whole family followed suit despite being 30 miles from the nearest golf course. “I hitch-hiked to the golf course half the time,’’ Martin said. “My brother decided to take up golf when he was 17. My dad said I am going to take it up too and my mother said, we’ll I am not going to stay at home, and the whole family ended up doing it. The family would go away on golf trips. It was a big part of our lives.’’ The New Zealand Seniors is Holman’s best win but he had also twice won the Canterbury Masters’ Strokeplay in 2012 and 2013 and had won an equivalent event in British Columbia which has a similar population to New Zealand. Holman, who plays off a one handicap, doesn’t do the Canterbury Masters anymore. That’s for the young guys, he says. “It’s 72 holes over two days. By the time you drag yourself out of bed for the second day there’s nothing left of you.’’ You can almost hear Holman reckoning, what’s wrong with 9 holes over eight days with rest days in between.

Ko’s fourth national open win L ydia Ko’s win the in Australian Open last month was her fourth in a national open for professional golfers. Her previous three had been the Canadian Open in 2012 and 2013 and the New Zealand Open in 2013. Those three were achieved as an amateur. In the Australian Open, played at the Royal Melbourne Golf Club, she picked up the winner’s purse of $US180,000 and cemented her world No 1 ranking. It was only a few weeks earlier she had become the game’s youngest top ranked player at age 17. The Australian Open win was her ninth win in a professional tournament and her sixth on the LPGA Tour, the world’s richest golf circuit for women. It was also a second win by a New Zealander in the Australian Open. The previous Kiwi to win was Marnie McGuire who triumphed at the Yarra Yarra Golf Club in 1998. Ko won by two shots from South Korea’s Amy Yang, a five-time winner on tour.

Ko sportswoman of the year LYDIA KO was in line to become just the fifth consecutive Halberg Award winner and although she did not achieve it she must have gone close. Only four others had won New Zealand’s top sporting award in consecutive years and many would have been thinking Ko would become the fifth when the awards’ evening was held in Auckland last month. The 2014 year was another remarkable 12 months in Ko’s golfing career in which she racked up three wins on the LPGA Tour, the world’s richest golf circuit for women. In addition she ended up topping the tour’s order or merit which earned her a $US1 million bonus as well as the more than $US2 million she won in tournament prizemoney – and all at the age of 17. Those feats were enough for Ko to secure the New Zealand sportswoman of the year title and while voting figures are not released she presumably gained a good number of votes for the top award. The winners of the top Halberg award were rowers Hamish Bond and Eric Murray. The four previous consecutive winners of the top award were shot putter Valerie Adams (2007, 2008 and 2009), rower Rob Waddell (1998, 1999 and 2000), runner John Walker (1975 and 1976) and the New Zealand rowing eight (1971 and 1972). If the early part of 2015 is any guide Ko is again going to be a leading contender for this year’s Halberg Awards.

Said Ko: “It’s great. I struggled in the last round at the last couple of Australian Opens but this year, I played pretty solid. I think that’s a really important thing and just to win on such an amazing golf course here.’’ Yang threatened to provide a thrilling finish until she bogeyed the 15th and 17th holes. Ko: “You could see that the scores were getting up and down, somebody was leading, there was a tie, so it was very interesting, interesting for the spectators. When you’re a player, you wish you had a fiveshot lead. “It was tough but I tried to make myself have a lot of opportunities and it’s great to finally win the Australian Open.” “Whenever I saw the leader board, she (Yang) had made another birdie and another one so I was like, okay, you need to get your stuff together and you need to make birdies. She’s such a consistent player and she’s been putting so well on these fast greens so I knew she was tough to get rid of.”

Kel Nagle: Seven NZ Opens, one British Open H

E won an amazing 61 times on the PGA Tour of Australasia. There were seven wins in the New Zealand Open. He won a British Open and he was a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. That were some of the feats of Australian golfing great Kel Nagle who died in Sydney at age 94 on January 29. No one comes close to Nagle’s 61 wins on the PGA Tour of Australasia. He dominated the Australian and New Zealand professional golf circuits for three decades. He won the New Zealand Open in 1957, 1958, 1962, 1964, 1967, 1968 and 1969. He also won the New Zealand PGA Championship seven times with the wins coming in 1957, 1958, 1960, 1970, 1973, 1974 and 1975. Nagle was aged 54 when he won the last of his NZPGA Championships and he remains the oldest winner on the Australasian Tour. The closest to Nagle’s 61 wins in Australia and New Zealand was Peter Thomson with 34 wins. Such was his consistency that he won a professional tournament at least once every year for 26 years up to 1975.

Nagle’s defining moment came in 1960 when he won the centenary British Open at St Andrews in Scotland. On that occasion he beat the rising American star Arnold Palmer and, outside Australasia, the win was considered something of an upset as Nagle had not previously finished in the top 10 of a major championship. Nagle had been known in Australia and New Zealand as one of the longest strikers off the tee with a long swing but by the time he arrived at the 1960 British Open his swing had shortened and his short game had become one of the best. Perhaps the biggest disappointment of Kelvin David George Nagle’s golfing career came in the 1965 United States Open. At the end of the regular 72 holes he was tied for first with Gary Player and they were required to return the next day for an 18-hole playoff. But on the fifth playoff hole there were gasps from the crowd when Nagle hit a woman spectator on the forehead. He was visibly affected to the point that his next shot hit another woman spectator, this time on an ankle, and he ended up losing the playoff by three shots.

READERS’ VIEWS Sky, may it prevail Dear sir, You editorial (about subscribing for internet golf coverage) struck a chord with me as I was weakening and becoming frustrated by not being able to watch any major tournament golf, both PGA and LPGA. And more especially I get extremely despondent when my sister, who lives in London, continues to watch golf on SKY UK and skypes me to discuss a particular golf shot or outcome. However, the decision on internet coverage has been solved for me as I live rurally and our old one way copper telephone line cannot get me adequate internet coverage to satisfy broadband let alone download anything more demanding than emails etc. Please continue lobbying on our behalf, as I am not aware of any of my golfing buddies who have taken the internet

route to watch golf. In answering your editorial question (have you subscribed) at our club last Wednesday after golf, no one in our four are prepared to subscribe to the internet provider, and yet we all previously watched golf or recorded it for later viewing happily as part of our overall entertainment package. And to me that’s the key. We play golf, talk golf, dream golf and previously watched golf on TV as part of our lives. It is part of our home entertainment single supplier package, but with slow internet speeds in a lot of parts of NZ, multiple programme providers via the net has little appeal to most NZers. So, I suggest that we golfers boycott the offers for live internet coverage on subscription and thereby cause the experiment to fail. I never thought I would say it, but may SKY prevail. COURSE record, a tournament record for the course and a birthday – it was all happening for Waikato golfer Denzel Ieremia at the South Island Strokeplay Championship. Ieremia, who turned 19, was in brilliant form at the St Clair course in Dunedin last month to distance his rivals and win by a massive 10 strokes. The tournament was played in fine conditions. On the way to victory he posted a course record when scoring 61 in the second of the four rounds of the tournament. The 61 comprised one eagle, nine birdies and a bogey for a 10-under par total. The previous course record was 63 which had been shared by Simon Brownlie (North Shore) in 2010 and Hayden Baird (Mt Maunganui) 2013. Ieremia had rounds of 66, 61, 70 and 65 for a total of 262. This was a record for

the event when held at St Clair. The previous St Clair record was 267 set by Peter Lee in 2013. In the women’s section of the South Island Strokeplay victory went to Rangiora schoolgirl Momoka Kobori. The 15-year-old led throughout the four rounds to win by five shots with scores of 71, 76, 71 and 74. Second was Brooke Hamilton (Maungakiekie) while one shot away third was Hillary O’Connor (Russley). Kobori, who plays off a plus two handicap, has only been playing golf for four years and is in her third year of competitive golf. The Rangiora High School year 11 pupil is no stranger to success. She had recently won the Canterbury Strokeplay title at Waimairi Beach. She topped the list in the New Zealand Faldo tournament and, along with Hamilton, has qualified to compete in the Faldo Grand final in China in March.

Where is the growth in golf? A

S I am leaving the Chisholm Park Golf Club in Dunedin after 12 years, I was recently asked how I have grown the game at the golf club. I quickly started to talk about the ninehole ladies’ golf club on Saturday mornings. Three years ago it didn’t exist. Now they regularly have over 20 ladies turn up and more are planning to join them. Why ladies nine-hole golf? This came about after I had a lady leave my “learn to golf” classes and join the Saturday ladies’ golf club. This lady was not suited to playing 18-holes. She struggled around the golf course which had a major affect on the other ladies and their enjoyment of their games. It became clear that many ladies at the club dreaded this lady showing up to play golf. However, this woman just wanted to play with the other ladies and improve. She needed a transition from golf classes to 18-holes - where she could comfortably learn the game in a supportive environment, where she wouldn’t be growled at for walking too slowly, or not knowing where her ball went, or not counting stableford points correctly or not knowing all the rules. I recognised the need for a place for la-

dies to move from the lesson stage to a novice player stage. I presented the scenario to the club’s board, outlining that I believed that the Saturday ladies would embrace new members and be able to assist these new players to become active members of the golf club. The club could definitely benefit from the dollars that these members would bring. Unfortunately, I got it wrong. The resistance was strong. The weekend women’s club captain complained that these new ladies would interfere with “our golf”, comments were received such as: “nine-holes isn’t really a game” and “if they want to join the golf club they should join 18-holes”. But what if women aren’t ready to play 18-holes? What if they don’t have the ability to play full competition golf or even have the time for the total five-hour club golf experience every week? Thank goodness the other board members saw the benefits of nine-hole golf and embraced it. The club captain (now a committee member) now acknowledges it works and how it has benefited the game. A few of the nine-hole ladies have also grown in confidence and moved on to join the 18-hole club. It has positively

influenced the “vibe” of the ladies club and the club’s social events are definitely more sociable. I was recently talking to a manager at a busy golf club and we were talking about trends and growing the game. He was talking about how the ladies nine-hole club at his club is starting to grow and the 18-hole ladies are putting up barriers. I laughed when I heard that. These new nine-hole ladies were paying a lesser sub, had less playing rights and no voting rights. Thus they also had no voice in the club. I’m sorry, but the traditional “ladies’ golf club” is out of date and has not adjusted to today’s lifestyle. But many of the ladies that are club captains may not understand how they are damaging their potential future members. Demographics around the world show that women getting into golf are often time-poor but love the game. They like the fitness and outdoor aspects of the game and find it relaxing but still enjoy the competition. They are active spenders and enjoy the social benefits of meeting new people and bonding with the other players. Nine-hole golf ticks all of the boxes. Show me which golf club doesn’t want new members.

Dean Murphy

New Zealand Golf Chief Executive

New Zealand administrator in royal company O ne of New Zealand’s most respected golf administrators is now one of the first women to become a member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews in Scotland. Patsy Hankins (pictured) is one of seven women who have accepted membership to the prestigious club after being identified as someone who has made a considerable contribution to the game of golf as an administrator. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club holds a unique position in golf. Established in 1754, it evolved through two and a half centuries as a leading authority in the world game. As the club celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2004 it devolved responsibility for the administration of the rules of golf, the running of The Open Championship (and other key events) and the development of the game in existing and emerging golfing nations, to a newly formed group of companies collectively known as The R&A. As a separate entity The Royal and Ancient Golf Club remains a private golf club with a world-wide membership of 2400. The club voted in September 2014 to end 260 years of male-only membership and invite females to join the club as members. Patsy’s legacy as a trailblazer in golf administration has grown due to her long list of

achievements and kind and gentle approach. From fostering the development of the women’s game to playing a key role in the amalgamation of men’s and women’s golf, Patsy has been very influential. Patsy was an accomplished player, representing Bay of Plenty-Thames Valley, but it was in administration she really made her mark. It started while husband Garrick was working in the Pacific Islands and Patsy firstly became a committee member at the Royal Samoa Country Club and then ladies captain at Fiji Golf Club. Unbeknown to her, this was the start of an illustrious career in the sport she loves. When Patsy and Garrick returned home, she then became ladies’ captain at Hutt Golf Club in Wellington and then after moving to Taupo became the district president of Bay of Plenty- Thames Valley from 1997-99. Patsy progressed to the board of Women’s Golf New Zealand in 2000 and four years later became its chairman. It was at this time that she really started to make an influence. The process of the amalgamation of men’s and women’s golf was not easy and it took a good two years to finalise the relationship. Patsy was a key figure, always remaining positive and realising that this would only be good for our game. When this happened and New Zealand Golf Incorporated came to being, Pat-

sy was elected the first president, a reflection of the esteem in which she was held. That opportunity has allowed Patsy to represent New Zealand on many occasions at various events around the world with one of her biggest achievements being elected women’s chairman of the International Golf Federation, a fitting acknowledgement of her wonderful abilities as a contributor to the game. Her appointment was the biggest achievement by a New Zealand golf administrator since Sir Thomas Gault became the first New Zealander to be elected captain of the R&A in 2005. Patsy will now take up membership of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club as one of the first women in the world to do so - another great achievement for a wonderful contributor to the game. New ordinary women members of the R&A are: Angela Bonallack, Claire Dowling (UK), Patsy Hankins (New Zealand), Diane DunlopHerbert (Canada) Martha Lang, Carol Semple Thompson (United States), Marion Thannhauser (Germany). New honorary women members of the R&A are: Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, Dame Laura Davies, Belle Robertson MBE (UK) Renée Powell, Lally Segard, Louise Suggs (United States) and Annika Sorenstam (Sweden).

Duncan Simpson

New Zealand PGA Chief Executive

When size doesn’t matter T

HE PGA of New Zealand pro-am circuit set a new record last month for the smallest club ever to host an official pro-am event. The Otago club of Tokarahi, with just 45 members, was the venue for the opening tournament on the 2015 Legends Tour. At 5629 metres, it might have looked like a pushover on paper, but many of those metres are nearly vertical. The slope rating of 120 is a better clue, and the winning score of 68 from Mike Harwood was a fair reflection of the great golf he played. The scores, of course, were almost incidental, because the whole community along with sponsors Southern Wide combined for an occasion that will be remembered for years to come – not least by the 37 professional golfers taking part (including 19 from overseas). Rumour has it the last professional left the clubhouse sometime after midnight, and the club is already planning for a two-day event in 2016. The south Manawatu club of Eketahuna (with 87 members), the previous record holder for the smallest club to hold an official pro-am event, is still on the main proam circuit, having co-hosted a two-day tournament with Masterton for many years. Another long-standing venue is Hawera (113 members), and when you add in clubs such as Kaikoura, Rangiora, Martinborough, Warkworth, Waiuku, Tau-

maranui, Ashburton and Methven, you can see size is not an obstacle to running a successful pro-am event. More important might be a good map of New Zealand or GPS unit to find places like Tokarahi (described as “near Oamaru” – actually at least an hour’s drive inland), Methven and Waiuku – no disrespect to those clubs, of course! So what does a club get out of a pro-am tournament? Firstly it can be a very good fundraiser: typically clubs can generate a profit of up to $10,000 or more from the day after meeting expenses and raising the prizemoney. There is certainly some work involved – especially for the first year, but it beats raffling off a few chooks on a Saturday afternoon. The PGA has a manual that covers all the steps. Secondly, there is the chance to play with a professional golfer and get first-hand experience of how they go about the game. That is bound to include some tips along the way – you will be playing in a team format and the professional will be keen to see you do well. Thirdly, it’s a great opportunity to showcase and profile your golf club in the local community, and although the course

preparation requirements for a PGA event are not onerous, course superintendents inevitably put their best foot forward knowing they will be under the spotlight and members get the benefit of enjoying a course in great nick before and after the tournament. Lastly, the pro-am circuit enables our professional golfers to win some money, build relationships with potential backers, and importantly gain the competitive experience they need to take their game to the next level. Winners of pro-ams over the years include Tim Wilkinson (Masterton/Eketahuna), Mark Brown (Kaikoura), Josh Geary (Martinborough) and Steven Alker (Omaha and Whitford Park), to name a few. Who knows, the next winner of a pro-am at your club could be on their way to the European or PGA Tours, and you may well have had the chance to play with them and be part of that journey. If your club is interested in hosting a PGA of New Zealand pro-am event, please contact our national events’ manager Geoff Smart: geoff.smart@pga.org.nz, for a no obligation discussion.

Fox now New Zealand’s number 1 golfer R

yan Fox’s win in the Queensland PGA Championship in late February has lifted him 60 places in the Official World Golf Rankings to now be New Zealand’s highest ranked male golfer in the World … just outside the top 200 at 203# overall.

Fox recorded his second victory on the PGA Tour of Australasia, winning the Coca Cola Queensland PGA Championship which concluded on Sunday 22nd of February. A stunning pair of back to back eagles on 16 & 17 propelled him into the lead on his way to a final round of

62, and a winning total of -17 for the tournament. Fox’s victory was worth $A 18,000 and enough World Ranking Points to take him past Danny Lee, and install him as our highest ranked male golfer that week.

GOLF TRAVEL

Bananas in Pyjamas star in the Apple Isle T

asmania may be well known as the Apple Isle, but it was Bananas in Pyjamas that stole the show during a fortnight of tournaments for club golfers in Tasmania in January. Allocating team colours was a new innovation for the Barnbougle Challenge and ‘yellow’ team members Jeff Canning and Bob Cameron from Sydney were a sensation coming dressed as B1 and B2 to the opening night dinner.

BARNBOUGLE 4 BALL CHALLENGE A CAPACITY field of 88 golfers traveled to the seaside town of Bridport, in northern Tasmania, for the Barnbougle Golf Challenge. Reminiscent of the famed courses of Scotland and Ireland, Barnbougle Dunes and the neighbouring Lost Farm are ranked Australia’s top 2 public access courses and ensconced in the world’s top 100. Playing as a team of 2, the unique competition format featured best ball, ambrose and aggregate events. Popular with couples, there were 3 mixed divisions as well as men’s and ladies divisions.

Total Points Mixed Div 1 Winner Charlie Lancey (WAGC, WA) & Sue Lancey (WAGC, WA) - 190.25 Mixed Div 1 Runner Up Bernard Dooney (Burleigh, QLD) & Lyn Bansgrove (Burleigh, QLD) - 190 Mixed Div 2 Winner Brian Tinker (Burleigh, QLD) & Chrissie Tinker (Burleigh, QLD) - 190.25 Mixed Div 2 Runner Up Scott Thiele (The Grange, SA) & Belinda Singleton (The Grange, SA) - 184.5 Mixed Div 3 Winner Romney Whitchurch (Beacon Hills, VIC) & Lee Whitchurch (Beacon Hills, VIC) - 191.75 Mixed Div 3 Runner Up Brian Macleod (WA Golf Club, WA) & Thea Macleod (WA Golf Club, WA) - 185.5 Men Winner Donald Benson (Cromer, NSW) & Arthur O’Shea (Royal Queensland, QLD) - 187.5 Men Runner Up Jeff Canning (The Springs, NSW) & Bob Cameron (Mollymook, NSW)- 183 Ladies Winner Gwen Clutterbuck (Oxley, QLD) & Jenny Brooks (Latrobe, VIC) - 182.25 Ladies Runner Up Wendy Hocking (Westward Ho, SA) & Sandy

To add to the fun, players were also drawn into bigger teams of 10 to 12 players. Players came dressed in their team colour to the welcome dinner. The enthusiasm and creativity in the costumes set the tone for great fun. Theme songs, poems and jokes based around team colours evolved and were rehearsed for a final night performance. Jenny Brooks from Latrobe in Melbourne combined with Gwen Clutterbuck from Oxley to win the ladies division and really enjoyed both courses. “We loved discovering these courses that were like nothing else we have ever played. The combination of rolling farm land, sand dunes and natural waterways make every hole unique. You feel like you are the only players on course.” “The hilltop restaurant overlooking the course and Bass Strait is stunning and the rooms were luxurious.” Romney and Lee Whitchurch from Beacon Hills in Victoria were part of the winning ‘Blue’ team. “We named ourselves the Barbougle Blues and doctored Carlton footy club’s theme song for our final night performance. Let’s just say we had better timing on the golf course.” The fifth annual Barnbougle Challenge runs 16 to 22 January 2016.

WREST POINT INTERNATIONAL MASTERS THE week prior to the Barnbougle Challenge saw more than 300 golfers from all over Australia and international visitors from as far afield as Scotland contest the Wrest Point International Masters in Hobart. Entrants came from 116 clubs, while 24 from Bargara near Bundaberg in Queensland was the most from any one club.Open to club golfers aged 35 plus, competition is played in age and handicap divisions. Playing 2 rounds at both Royal Hobart and Tasmania golf clubs, all golfers play stableford while ‘A’ graders are also eligible to compete for the best gross. Seventy five year old Jean Thomas from Redcliffe in Queensland proved age was no barrier, carding a 72 hole total of 388, the best of all the ladies and a runaway winner of the ladies 66+ gross championship. Madeleine Barnett from Concord, scored 141points stableford points, the highest total of all the ladies. Neil Faulks from Tasmania Golf Club had rounds of 77, 74, 78 and 79 to record the best stoke score of all the men and a narrow winner in the men’s 35-55 division. Awarded Oceania’s Best Golf Tour Operator at the 2014 World Golf Awards, tour-

nament organisers Go Golfing undertake a 6 month review of all player handicaps to ensure a fair playing field. Coupled with daily adjustments and significant handicap reductions for players scoring consistently well, many divisions were keenly contested. The average stableford division winner scored 135 points, well short of the 144 points if you played to your handicap every day. Voted Australia’s best ‘week of golf’ for the past six years, the 15th annual Wrest Point Masters featured top class entertainment and nightly social events. Phil Cass, winner of the Gold ‘Mo Award’ for best live entertainer in Australia, performed his comedy magic show at the welcome dinner. The St Hallett winemaker dinner featured a decadent 4 course menu with matched wines and stunning views of the Derwent River. The nightly 19th Hole happy hours featured golf presentations and lucky draws. Tours to historic Richmond, wineries, MONA, Port Arthur and Bruny Island were popular among participants. Festivities culminated with a glamorous gala dinner where more than $35,000 in golf prizes and lucky draws were presented before a 5 piece band, playing popular tunes, had the dance floor packed. First timer Doug Renshaw from Perth was in high praise of the whole event experience. “The courses were awesome. Royal Hobart is immaculately conditioned and the views from Tasmania Golf Club are stunning. Go Golfing arranged our flights to Tasmania including free carriage of our golf clubs with Virgin and their hospitality and organization was first class.” “The quality of the player packs, dinners, entertainment and generous prize table made this event sensational value. I played with great characters from places I’ve never heard of and have made plans to catch up at next year’s event. I can’t wait!” According to tournament director Mark Hawley, January is a great time to visit Tasmania. “With long sunny days and temps in the high 20’s, the weather is perfect for golf and touring around. It’s nice to be here in Tasmania when the rest of Australia is battling heat waves and storms.” The 16th annual Wrest Point International Masters runs 10-15 January 2016. WHAT’S NEW

Motocaddy launches hi-tech remote control trundler New S7 model boasts ‘super intelligent’ hands-free control technology

M

otocaddy, the marketleading electric golf trundler brand, has launched its first remote control model boasting one of the most sophisticated guidance systems on the powered trundler market. The innovative S7 REMOTE – which features the same frame design as the award-winning S-Series range – comes with a dual pressure control system that allows golfers to alter how much the trundler turns to the left or the right, simply by varying the pressure applied to buttons on the handset. As well as the dual-pressure directional buttons, the user can also control the trundler’s speed going forwards or backwards depending on how long they hold the respective buttons down on the remote control device. To maintain stability in challenging terrain, the S7 incorporates a special mechanism that enables each of the two motors to help compensate for

lateral slopes. It also features a rear anti-tip wheel, as well as a fully-rotating front wheel to allow the trundler to travel smoothly without requiring additional guidance. A 50 meter cut-out function stops the trundler from going out of range, while a hibernation setting brings it to a halt if the remote hasn’t been touched for more than 45 seconds. Clever electronics also allow the golfer to switch between the remote function and manual control mode by holding down the on/off button for three seconds. In addition to its impressive remote control features, the S7 REMOTE also includes the brand’s patented USB charging port to charge GPS devices from the battery, plus a speed indicator and battery meter. The S7 REMOTE has the added bonus of incorporating the two standout features from the 2014 range - QUIKFOLD and EASILOCKTM. One

of the easiest assembly mechanisms on the market, QUIKFOLD allows golfers to fold or unfold the trundler in as little as five seconds thanks to a simple sliding catch; while the EASILOCKTM bag-to-trundler connection system removes the need for a lower bag strap, thanks to two holes on the S7’s bag support aligned with two removable locking pins on the base of any of the latest Motocaddy bags. The new S7 REMOTE trundlers comes with a Motocaddy 20ah Lithium battery suitable for 18+ holes on a dual-motored model and will be available from April 2015 in black and alpine to follow in September 2015. Limited pre-orders available at GoMotorised call 0800 284 443 to book yours today. >> For more details on all Motocaddy trundlers, batteries and accessories, please go to www. golfwholesalers.co.nz

SHEPHERD WINS FITCHETT OPEN BY MICHAEL MACDONALD

WHANGAREI golfer Chris Shepherd has bagged his first title of the 2015 season, winning the Frank Fitchett Junior Open at Northern Wairoa Golf Club on Sunday. The 14-year old student at Whangarei Boys’ found trouble around the turn but steadied himself well to par the final six holes and take the overall title with a 67 nett. The win is a sign of continued progression by the Northland Academy member after a strong 2014 season that included a win at the Northland Junior Tiger and selection in the Northland Junior Development and Booth Shield teams. In the girls competition it was Whangaroa golfers Taylor Wyatt-Logan and Brooke Kingi who came out on top. Wyatt-Logan was consistent throughout the day, her nett score of 70 good enough to claim the girls title by two strokes. Northland women’s number one Kingi was too good in the gross competition, her one under par round of 72 featuring five birdies. The boys gross honours went to Braden Keown (Waipu) with an even par round of 72, the quartet of Steven Lang (Northland), Julian Fowler (Northland), Christian Nitsche (Whangarei) and Jack Lee

(North Shore) finished tied second on 74. For the second year in a row the event featured a nine hole Kiwi competition played using the ‘Kiwi’ tees at the Northern Wairoa Golf Club. Waipu golfer Matthew Prinsloo came out on top with a nett score of 26 followed by The Leona Mortimore (Whangarei) on 28 and Kenny Wyatt-Logan (Whangaroa) in third with 31. New comers Camryn Wyatt-Logan (Whangaroa) and Hayley Macalister (Northern Wairoa) also competed. Nett Results: Frank Fitchett Trophy: Chris Shepherd (Whangarei) Boys Division: Chris Shepherd 67, Steven Lang 69, Tarrin Rous 69, Braden Keown 71, Ben Bowmar 71, Jamie Thomas 71, Jack Lee 71, Julian Fowler 73, Christian Nitsche 74, Michael Walker 74, Bradley Foster 77 Girls Division: Taylor Wyatt-Logan 70, Brooke Kingi 72, Jodi Macalister 72, Soktaerodh Sean 74, Taimana Ngakuru 77, Soktaera Sean 77, Danielle Ngakuru 78, Eui Hwa Kim 78, Setiny Pheng 83 Kiwi Division: Matthew Prinsloo 26, Leona Mortimore 28, Kenny Wyatt-Logan 31, Hayley Macalister, Camryn Wyatt-Logan

staff must be congratulated for the excellent condition of the course in what must have been the driest January on record, and one could not help but notice the superb floral arrangements in the Club house foyer and lounge. Three notable incidents caused some amusement when reported in the Clubhouse: An errant electric trundler with a mind of its own disappeared when parked near a tree, and later was found out of sight two fairways away, still moving— fast. At the beginning of the day, an unfortunate pair had thirteen shots in the greenside bunker virtually ruining any chance of a place in the prize list— they were later rewarded for their good sportsmanship and grit for carrying on to the end. Last but not least, a player caused considerable delay by hunting for his ball, only to find it beneath his parked cart.

WAIHI 29 HOLE FOURSOMES TOURNAMENT ON Sunday February 1, Waihi Golf Club Ladies Committee organised a 29-hole Foursomes tournament, a popular annual event which in earlier times was known as “ The Philcox & Stevens Foursomes”. In keeping with tradition, it was well-supported, and there were players, from Australia, Titirangi, Hamilton, Walton, Taupo, Matamata, and of course many local members. Conditions could not have been more pleasant, with cloudy skies and an occasional shower keeping temperatures down. The greens

PGG WRIGHTSON FOURSOMES THE annual PGG Wrightson 36 hole foursomes was held at Walton on Saturday, January 31. The course was in great condition considering the very dry summer conditions. A large field started the day with the traditional shotgun start. The morning scoring was difficult especially a few out of bounds and shots finding water, this format allows for little mistakes as every shot counts. The morning round found only a few that played to their handicap or better. The afternoon round was more competitive as half the field this time played better than their handicap. The winners for

GRANT CLEMENTS MEMORIAL GOLF TOURNAMENT SOME great amateur golf was witnessed at the Mount Maunganui Golf Club over each round of the 72 holes of the “Week-end of Amateur Golf” on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th February. The course was in excellent condition and the weather perfect. Day One: Round 1. A new Black Course record of 63 by James Beale (North Shore) set the tournament alight to lead 5 shots ahead of 3 others and 4 shots over another 7 players. 27 players played to par or better for the course. Round 2: The changing fortunes for James Beal (North Shore) scoring a 77 slip down to 8th, while an excellent 65 by Oscar Cadenhead (Clearwater) livened up the contest to lead. Two other players Mason Lee (The Grange) and William Howard (Tauranga) also finished on 138 to see a 3 way tie at the half-way point. 2014 winner Bailey Smith (Mount Maunganui), with a 68, moved into contention

with a 3 round total of 139 along with 3 other players.. There were 16 other sub-par rounds to provide a close contest with more than 16 in contention with 2 rounds to be played. The women’s division saw Alanna Campbell (Omanu) 73/72 – 145 lead from Su Yeon Yoon (Pupuke) 73/74. Round 3. 66’s by Nick Coxan (Narrows) and a 68 by Charlie Hillier (Te Puke) produced a tie for lead on 207. Harry Hiller (Te Puke) and his 66 placed him at 3rd equal with William Howard (Tauranga) on 210. A 66 by Joshua Munn (Manawatu) advanced his claim for the tile and a 3-way totals of 211 with Oscar Cadenhead (Clearwater). Round 4: In a very open tournament with 18 holes to go there were potentially 17 players in contention. In a final round where the challengers came and went, the result was in the balance up to the final hole. A very good 69 that included a great recovery shot on the 18th hole to score a birdie averted a play off and the title/Trophy was won by Charlie Hillier (Te Puke). Fast finishing Joshua Munn (Manawatu), scoring his 2nd 66 for the day followed one shot behind on 277 in what was a real challenge. Harry Hillier finished 3rd with 281. 4th equal on 282 was Luke Toomey (Lochiel) and William Howard (Tauranga) and Duncan Croudis 283 to finish 6th. The Women’s Division looked like developing into a 3 way race. Alanna Campbell (Omanu) took an early lead with 73/72 145, 2 shots ahead after 2 rounds from Su Yeon Yoon (Pupuke) 73/74 147, ahead of Grace Senior (Wairakei) 73/78 151. The same order held for Round 3 with the 4th position change – Rotana Howard (Rotorua) dropping off the pace. Round 4 and a 71 by Alanna Campbell (Omanu) took the Women’s Trophy by 9 shots from Su Yeon Yoon (Pupuke) with a final total of 300 and Grace Senior (Wairakei) on 306.

YOUNG GUNS TO THE FORE! THE Bay of Plenty Women’s Championship Pennants tee it up in March with teams of 6 from Mount Maunganui, Omanu, Eastern Bay, Rotorua and Tauranga. After two years of not being able to enter a competitive team in this competition,Tauranga Golf Club are now looking to be very competitive thanks to the emergence of 4 outstanding young players. Leading the way is 16 year old Emma Lee Morrell who now plays off a 2 handicap. Backing up Emma Lee are two 14 year olds Olivia Choo playing off 4 and Jodae Ngaheu (7) The fourth “young gun” is Madison Gartner who plays off 8 and has the talent but not the same amount of time due to academic and musical pursuits to put into practice as the other girls. What is most remarkable is that less

than 2 years ago both Olivia and Jodae were struggling to play to a 36 handicap and Emma Lee has only been playing since 2012. There are three key elements that have contributed to their success. * Good coaching * Dedication and hard work * The camaraderie that has evolved by having others to practice and play with. What is also so pleasing to witness is how the Tauranga Ladies have encouraged and supported these girls into their fold. To have 4 girls 16 years and under on single figures is pretty special for any golf club and hopefully will encourage others to follow in their footsteps.

Pictured are the Tauranga Young Guns: Jodae Ngaheu, Emma Lee Morrell, Olivia Choo, Madison Gartner. 

80 YEARS HISTORY OF KAITAKE GOLF CLUB AS KAITAKE Golf Club gets ready to celebrate its 80th year of a long and varied his-

tory, one of its oldest members reminisces about his involvement over the years: Bert Seamark, 82 years. Bert’s involvement began 50 years ago when he became a member of the Weld Rd club. Bert lived in Omata and when the 9 hole course at Weld Rd was no longer suitable he got together with Tom Priest from the Omata Store to find another location for a golf course. Bert says it was Tom Priest’s enthusiasm that got another golf course established on the Berridge farm at Tapuae. The Berridge farm was a sheep farm so the course had to be started from scratch. Old newspaper clippings tell of a group of golfers and non-golfers with Tom Priest as their President trying to utilise an old cowshed as the first clubhouse and develop an 18 hole course, none of which seemed viable so an old farmhouse down by the river was the clubhouse. Bert remembers if you stamped your feet inside you’d have likely have gone through the floorboards. 18 holes were not viable either! The Tapuae course can be best described as “9 rough holes” but the picturesque site and it’s locality to New Plymouth saw its membership climb to around 400 members. The course was played down to the sea and up the river and over the hills so clearly was a good challenge! Another newspaper article reports that within three years at Tapuae the future looked bright for the club but a more permanent solution was needed soTom Priest and Garth Deakin were given the job of looking at properties from around Omata (Hurford Rd, Koru Rd, Plymouth Rd)

with nothing suitable found for a golf course. Bert recalls the club had S3000 in the bank but this figure may have been lower ($800). Duncan Kitchen owned a 110 acre farm on the Main Rd and was agreeable to sell it to the golf club for $500 an acre. Whatever the amount in the bank, it was well short of the $55,000 purchase price and the $12,000 deposit needed. The com-

mittee of Tom Priest, Bob Richardson and Bert were determined to raise the money and a concerted fundraising effort was started with many housie evenings, raffles and other less legal activities undertaken. The rest was raised with debentures. Bert says the best thing they ever did in the early 70’s was to decide to build a brand new clubhouse rather than move on an old building. It is still suitable for purpose to-

day. Many volunteers helped build the clubhouse at a cost of$11,000. Many more volunteers helped lay out the course with help from Denny Sutherland and Sunny Lahood. Sunny had laid out the Inglewood course. For two years the club ran sheep on the course in exchange for a mortgage with Duncan Kitchen. Half of the proceeds of wool and meat went to Duncan. Duncan had run jersey cows on his farm hence there were no shearing facilities for the 300 sheep so they were ‘droven’ along the main road to Timaru Rd. The new golf course was opened in 1972 by Mr Thompson, local MP even though the clubhouse was not quite finished. To complete the course to an 18 hole golf course, property was bought off the Telford family for the 8th fairway and off the Bell family for the 15th fairway. In the late 70’s spare land at the northern end of the course was excess to requirements and 23 sections sold. The sale of this land resulted in the mortgage on the club being paid off. Bert and his wife Jessie bought one of the sections and still reside there today. Jessie still plays golf but Bert no longer plays and rates himself as a social golfer but with 50 years playing under his

LEVIN GOLF CLUB GETTING RESULTS FROM SNAG LEVIN GOLF CLUB have increased their Junior boy and girl membership with the aid of SNAG (Starting New At Golf). Last month Golfer Pacific reported their day out at the Levin Hockey turf Club achieved outstanding results with several young juniors new to golf. The following week of the school holidays, the club invited the juniors out to the course for three free afternoons to have another go. 30 children attended the first session. The next day the format was a couple of hours of SNAG then an introduction to the real stuff. The third day a warm up with the plastic and Velcro. Alan Currie Professional golfer and joint owner of NZ Golf Outlet Otaki joined the session for the afternoon. He was amazed how competent these children had become in such a short time. With Alan’s guidance for a couple more hours the Golf club took the youngies out on to the course for a three and a half hole Ambrose. They loved it. Since then every Sunday at 1pm their juniors meet for coaching and a hit about. Some

of the Mum’s and Dad’s are also getting the bug. They now have 28 junior boys and 8 junior girls. Each Sunday will continue and a programme is being arranged for the next school holidays mid week. Levin Golf Club endorses all golf club to get in behind SNAG Golf. In Manawatu /Wanganui region the equipment is available from the Association. If you haven’t seen it please go have a look at the equipment its is incredible and so comfortable for the very young.

Pictured above are the little ones: Nic, Gabriella, Lachie, Sarsha, Penny and Alan Currie. Below, the big kids loved smashing the tennis balls at the target. Competitions all the way and we had a prize giving at the end of the week.

HOSTS OF THE BMW NEW ZEALAND OPEN RECEIVE SPECIAL HONOUR THE co-hosts of the country’s premier golf event will be honoured during a special presentation at the ‘BMW New Zealand Open Welcome Party’. Sir Michael Hill of The Hills and Mr Eiichi Ishii of Millbrook Resort will receive the ‘Keys to Arrowtown’, a medieval tradition honouring the accomplishments of the 32  GOLFER PACIFIC March 2015

two golf course developers. The keys will be presented at the official party, taking place in historic Arrowtown on Thursday March 12, 2015. The courses, both located in Arrowtown, near Queenstown, will be hosting the BMW New Zealand Open next month from March 12 to 15 2015. BMW New Zealand Open tournament director Michael Glading said the two men were pivotal to the growth and development of golf tourism in New Zealand. “The Hills and Millbrook Resort are the epitome of golf in New Zealand. Sir Michael and Mr Ishii have developed outstanding world-class courses which we’re proud to call home to our premier golf event.” This is the fifth time that The Hills has hosted the Open with Millbrook Resort joining forces last year to stage the event, part of the sanctioned PGA tour of Australasia. Following the first day of play at The Hills and Millbrook Resort, the free welcome party starts at 5.30pm and will showcase fun, friendly, family, top-class entertainment for locals and visitors on the (closed to traffic) streets of Arrowtown. Mr Glading said it was a great opportunity to acknowledge the two visionary local businessmen and celebrate their significant achievements in creating such stunning golf courses. “The Welcome Party kicks off the Open in style and is a fantastic way to say thanks to our hosts for their remarkable efforts in firmly stamping New Zealand on the world golfing map.” The keys, attached to greenstone citation tags, will be displayed at both golf courses during the four-day tournament. For further information and tickets go to www.bmwnzopen.com.

STEVE WILLIAMS TO HOST ‘CADDY CLINIC’ AT THE 2015 BMW NEW ZEALAND OPEN ONE of the world’s most famous caddies will host a caddy clinic for all participating caddies at the 2015 BMW New Zealand Open in Queenstown. New Zealander Steve Williams, most famous for caddying for golfing greats Peter Thomson, Greg Norman, Raymond Floyd, Tiger Woods and Adam Scott, will be hosting a ‘Caddy Clinic’ during tournament week at the spectacular The Hills golf course on Wednesday March 11, 2015. It’s a unique opportunity for caddies taking part in the tournament to get advice from Steve Williams during the one-hour clinic, where he’ll share snippits of his lifetime of caddying experiences with up to 270 caddies from across New Zealand. Williams will stay on during the tournament and caddy for an amateur during rounds one and two of the tournament. All amateur participants will have the opportunity to bid for this experience with all proceeds to go towards tournament charity The First Tee and the Steve Williams Foundation. Williams began his caddying career at his home club in Wellington at the age of six years old. By age 13, he had a two handicap but decided that caddying was his future rather than playing golf. His first break came when he caddied for Australian great Peter Thomson in 1976 and since then has becoome one of the most recognisable loopers in the game. Steve Williams is looking forward to being part of the BMW New Zealand Open. “It’s great to be able to return to Queenstown for this fantastic tournament and

host a clinic for up and coming caddies,” said Williams. “I’ll be sharing some words of wisdom to make sure the caddies perform to the best of their abilities and have a lot of fun too.” Already over one hundred caddies have registered for the BMW New Zealand Open but caddy master for the tournament, Andrew Whiley, is still looking for a number of caddies to participate in the event and get up close and personal to some of the world’s best golfers. “We’re looking for people with a knowledge of golf but what’s important is that they’re fit and can keep up with the players as they carry a tour bag around the course,” said Mr Whiley. Caddies travel from as far as Northland to be part of the BMW New Zealand Open and many are returning for the third time. Dunedin’s Graeme Wyllie caddied for celebrity Phil Keoghan in 2014 and was “thrilled” to be paired with ‘The Amazing Race’ star. “I was lucky enough to caddie for Phil who was great fun to be around – I enjoyed every minute,” he said. “The whole experience of being at the Open was amazing and I’d encourage anyone who’s thinking about being a caddy to go for it – you won’t regret it.” Last year, Fiona Robinson from Invercargill had the honour of being caddy to Australian pro golfer Terry Pilkadaris and described it as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. “Cadding for Terry was a phenomenal experience which I’ll remember forever, especially as he finished in the top ten,” she said. “It was so exciting to be that close to a pro player and in such a beautiful setting in Queenstown; it was all quite surreal.” All participating caddies will receive an invite to the Steve Williams’ Caddy Clinic which will take place on the Wednesday evening from 5pm to 6pm at The 19th, The Hills. “Caddies that take part in the Open, and especially those that attend Steve’s clinic, will not only have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but they’ll be setting themselves in good stead for those wanting to pursue a career in caddying,” said Mr Whiley. INTERNATIONAL CRICKET LEGENDS TO PLAY IN THE BMW NEW ZEALAND OPEN IN QUEENSTOWN. SOME of the greatest cricketers in the history of the game will swap their bats for golf clubs, and resume battle at the BMW New Zealand Open when they line up in the inaugural ANZ Celebrity Challenge from March 12-15. West Indians Sir Viv Richards and Brian Lara, Englishmen Sir Ian Botham and Graeme Swann, Australians Ricky Ponting and Shane Warne and New Zealand’s Stephen Fleming, Nathan Astle and Mark Richardson will all be contesting the event, as amateur golfers in a Pro-Am teams format, to be branded the ANZ Celebrity Challenge. Botham returns after first playing as a celebrity at The Hills in 2013, jumping at the chance to take up the challenge again this year. “I find it difficult to turn down the chance to come and play golf in New Zealand, especially in Queenstown with its stunning scenery and fantastic food and wine,” said Botham. “I have played in the

Dunhill event for many years, and it’s just great to see a tournament played across similar lines being held in New Zealand”. An added incentive for Botham this year is the chance to play alongside living legend Sir Viv Richards. The two enjoyed a great rivalry on the cricket field during the 1980s and were equally good friends off the field. These days, they are more concerned with their short game than tearing opposition teams apart. Meanwhile, former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming and long time Australian rival Ricky Ponting are back for the second year running to try to beat each other on the manicured fairways of The Hills and Millbrook. Ponting showed his golfing class with six birdies in the opening round in 2013, so Fleming will have his work cut out to beat his Aussie mate.

Ponting (pictured) was just thrilled to be coming back for another crack. “I can’t wait for the chance to pit my golfing skills again with some of the best cricketing names in the game. The BMW New Zealand Open is a fantastic event and I love coming to Queenstown to be part of the action,” he said. Fleming was equally enthused. “This tournament is always a key date in my diary. Its heaps of fun, especially as I get to battle it out with my cricketing peers on the golf course in such a beautiful setting,” said Fleming. “My experience of playing in 2014 event would rank up there with some of the best sporting moments in my entire career”. Like Ponting and Fleming, former Black Caps opener Mark Richardson is taking up the challenge once again, while Brian Lara, Nathan Astle, Shane Warne and Graeme Swann are making their debuts. No doubt all will be keen to outstrip their cricket rivals in the ANZ Celebrity Challenge, which promises plenty of fireworks and maybe some good-natured sledging along the way. Shane Warne added that he was “really excited to be a part of the Pro-Am” and that “hopefully I can find some form before the tournament starts! I absolutely loved my last round at The Hills late last year, and am looking forward to getting back out there again”. John Hart, Chairman of the BMW New Zealand Open organising committee welcomed the opportunity to have New Zealand’s most prestigous golf event align with the Cricket World Cup. “It is quite unique to have this incredible line-up of cricket legends come to New Zealand as a group for the first time. Our tournament creates the opportunity to celebrate New Zealand’s co-hosting of the Cricket World Cup, and to enjoy the banter and rivalry that exists amongst this group of legendary sportsmen.” Susan McGregor, ANZ’s Head of Corporate Marketing and Sponsorship, said the ANZ Celebrity Challenge will inject some highly competitive celebrity fun into the

BMW NEW ZEALAND OPEN ATTRACTS IMPRESSIVE LINEUP OF JAPAN TOUR PLAYERS A POWERFUL contingent of Japan Tour (JGTO) players is heading to Queenstown for the BMW New Zealand Open in March. A 21-strong line-up has been confirmed for the event, including seven of the top 30 from the 2014 money list. That compares with 15 players in last year’s event, when the best of those players ranked number 32 on the 2013 money list. It’s an indication of the growing strength of the partnership between the BMW New Zealand Open and the Japan Tour, after commencing a formal partnership arrangement last year. BMW New Zealand Open Tournament Director Michael Glading is excited at the group of players set to challenge for this year’s title. “There are many world-class players coming from the Japan tour, and we’re expecting many of them to be ‘in the hunt’ when the tournament heads into the final day on Sunday,” he said. “ The relationship with the Japan Tour is a huge boost to our tournament both competitively and commercially, and we’re thrilled that such a high quality group has taken up the opportunity to play this year.” Leading the JGTO challenge is Yusaku Miyazato, who finished 11th on the money list last year. Miyazato was the model of consistency in 2014, picking up seven top 10 finishes including victory at the Token Homemate Cup in April. Golf is a family affair for Miyazato – his brother Kiyoshi also plays on the Japan Golf tour, while his sister Ai has won nine times on the US LPGA Tour. Another player to keep an eye on is Yoshitaka Takeya. The 34-year-old proved to be a star turn in his rookie season on the JGTO last year, winning the Japan Tour Championship in June and going on to finish 10th on the money list. Add five times Japan Tour winner Toshinori Muto, who is back for his third visit to Queenstown in as many years, and Toru Taniguchi, a legend of the JGTO having won 19 times throughout his career, and you get an indication of the class of players on offer. In addition to this strong contingent of Japanese-born players, the field is supplemented by well-known Australian and New Zealand players who ply their trade on the JGTO. These include Australian Brendan Jones, who is the highest earning non-Japanese player on that tour with career earnings of just on NZ$10m, and Brad Kennedy, who returns to New Zealand for

the first time since winning the 2011 BMW New Zealand Open. They are backed up with leading Kiwis Michael Hendry and David Smail, both of whom are fully committed to the Japanese Tour. It’s not just the players who are embracing the tournament. It has also captured the attention of the business community in Japan, with four Japanese companies (OJI Holdings, Sumitomo Forestry, JTB and Furuuchi Kamejiro Shoten) signing on as sponsors. The tournament has also encouraged Japan’s leading golf television network to send a crew to New Zealand to broadcast live coverage of the event to over 7.8 million homes in Japan. The BMW New Zealand Open will be played at The Hills and Millbrook Resort from March 12-15, 2015.

HOLE IN 1 FOR WILSON

death play off to beat Ryan Bellamy (St Clair) to win the Taieri Classic, played over 36 holes on the Taieri Lakes on Sunday 15th of February. Both golfers finished the two rounds with a par aggregate of 144 but they got to that position by two different routes. Hall carded a two over par 74 in the morning but romped under par early in his afternoon round with eagles on the par 5 first and par 5 fifth holes. Bellamy had a regulation 72 in the morning and looked set to be runner up at one over par playing the final hole in his second round. However, a good explosion from a greenside bunker gave him a birdie 4 on the final hole to force the play off. On the first play off hole, both players carded birdie fours, with Hall pitching to 2m while Bellamy chipped from the front edge. Nick Borren (Otago) and Mark Andrews (Taieri Lakes) shared the morning lead with two under par rounds of 70, one shot ahead of Michael Minty (Island Park)Bellamy was fourth when the players went to lunch while Hall shared fifth spot with local golfer Elliot Hornbrook. Andrews faded with 81 while Minty also dropped back with a three over par 75. Meanwhile Borren held the lead on the field with four holes to play until disaster struck at the par 5 15th. In most uncharacteristic style, Borren dropped a truckload of shots on the hole to finish in a tie for third with Minty.

2015 CENTRAL OTAGO INTERCLUB UNDERWAY VAUGHAN WILSON (pictured) scored his ace on the 3rd of January on the courses par four 13th at Gleniti, a feat that has never been achieved before. But Vaughan Wilson has re written the history books, firing his drive down to the green of the hole known as “The Brow” Wilson said hitting a hole in one was “a bit surreal” especially when told the feat had never previously been achieved. Wilsons reaction to the achievement was delayed, from the tee the green was not visible. He only realized what he had done when fellow players, still on the 13th green started shouting back down the course. “We didn’t see it, they were whistling and hollering “ he said.

2015 TAIERI CLASSIC TO JEREMY HALL SOUTHLAND rep, Jeremy Hall (Greenacres) birdied the second hole of a sudden

THE first round of the Central Otago Interclub competition, for 2015, teed off at Arrowtown on Saturday 14th of February. Teams from eight clubs, the same entries as 2014, competed in the 6-man team strokeplay event. Each competing club hosts a round of the aggregate competition during the year. Four rounds are played on a monthly basis until winter intervenes and the competition goes into hibernation. The second four-round segment runs from September to December. 2014 winners, Wanaka, are again away to a solid start, winning the Arrowtown round by 2 shots from Queenstown with the hosts in third place. Cromwell rounds out the top four, some 10 shots from the leaders. The best 5 of each 6 man teams scores count in each round and swings of 10 strokes from round to round are not uncommon. The second round is scheduled for Alexandra on the 28th of March. 

Distance for every swing PRECISION-TUNED DISTANCE DRIVEN BY THE RZN WEIGHT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM DISTANCE for every golf swing – that’s what Nike Golf engineers set out to deliver with the brand’s new Vapor drivers: the Vapor Pro, Vapor Speed and now the Vapor Flex. The Vapor Flex, Nike’s pinnacle driver, features the same three key technologies found in the Vapor Pro and Vapor Speed drivers: Nike’s FlyBeams, which stiffen the cavity back of the club. A re-engineered Compression Channel that accentuates the spring-like effect across the face to return energy to the golf ball. FlexLoft 2, which allows the golf athlete the functionality of five lofts and three face angles within 15 different settings. All of these technologies were developed to drive more energy to the golf ball for more distance, no matter the swing. But Nike didn’t stop there with the Vapor Flex driver. While the Vapor Pro and Vapor Speed drivers each provide specific launch and spin characteristics, Nike Golf engineers believe there’s one more important step to ensure golf athletes achieve their optimal launch conditions. With that goal in mind, the

engineers created the FlexFlight adjustability system. FlexFlight features a RZN tube with a high-density weight on one end, called the FlightPod, which is located in the cavity of the club. By flipping the FlightPod, golfers can actively move the center of gravity of the Vapor Flex driver to further optimize their launch conditions. With FlexFlight, golfers can manipulate the center of gravity from low and forward to low and back by adjusting the pod in quarter turns with the same wrench used to operate the FlexLoft 2. Utilizing the FlexFlight system impacts launch angle, spin rate, forgiveness (increased in the “mid” setting) and workability (enhanced in the “low” setting). “Often times in the fitting process, there’s an opportunity for a final adjustment to develop the shot shape and ball flight the athlete is looking for,” said Nate Radcliffe, Director of Engineering for Nike Golf. “That’s how FlexFlight can help. With a simple quarter turn, we can adjust the mass of the FlexFlight module forward and backward within the club to change the

trajectory and shot shape for the athlete. In doing so, we are seeing that a two-plus millimeter shift will change launch angle up to a degree – and it gives us that fine-tuning change in spin of about 300 rpm. As the last step in the fitting process, that can be the difference between the athlete being comfortable with the fitting and really being able to compete with it on the golf course.” The FlexFlight system is simple and easy to use. The 15gram RZN FlightPod, inserts into the back of the driver. Using the same FlexLoft wrench, a simple quarter turn rotation and audible click will lock or unlock the pod. When unlocked, the FlightPod can be removed, reversed and locked back into the cavity. “The power of RZN is that it allows us to remove and relocate mass within a club head,” said Radcliffe. Nike Golf uses RZN technology as a valuable weight management component, and the technology is also featured in Nike’s new Vapor irons and RZN golf balls.

More speed, better launch NIKE ENGINEERS REIMAGINE FAIRWAY WOODS DESIGN TO PROMOTE SPEED AND FORGIVENESS FOR THE GOLF ATHLETE NIKE GOLF innovation begins with the golf athlete in mind – always. Nike engineers and designers took the inspiration and insights from Nike athletes to drive the technology of Nike’s new Vapor Speed and Vapor Flex fairway woods, available February, 2015. “Athlete insights drove significant chassis refinement in the Vapor fairway woods.” said Nate Radcliffe, Director of Engineering for Nike Golf. “Our athletes wanted tighter but forgiving leading edges, fuller profiles and added ball speed. We’ve delivered that with the synergy of our FlyBeam and compression channel technologies.” The Vapor Speed fairway woods have a 25 percent larger footprint with a lower and deeper Center of Gravity

(CG) than previous Nike models. “Athletes, including Tiger Woods, requested larger face profiles in fairway woods, but it was vital that we do that without compromising ball speed or optimal launch conditions,” said Radcliffe. “We successfully modified the chassis by sloping the crown to lower the CG, which optimized launch characteristics across the family.” Like the new Vapor drivers,

the Vapor Speed fairway woods feature Nike’s new FlyBeam-reinforced Covert Cavity Back design, a reengineered Compression Channel and a NexCOR face – all combining to stabilize the chassis, maximize ball speed and promote longer and straighter distance. The low CG provides a high launch with a lower-spin flight. The Vapor Flex fairway woods highlight the same technologies found in the Vapor Speed on a more

compact chassis, except the Vapor Flex has added Nike’s FlexLoft 2 adjustability system, allowing the golf athlete the functionality of five lofts and three face angles within 15 different settings. The new, improved FlexLoft system is five grams (30 percent) lighter without compromising function, which leads to a CG that is up to 2mm lower on the Vapor Flex fairways. The redistribution of mass creates more stability, better launch conditions and faster swing speeds. Another benefit of FlexLoft 2 is its forward and backward compatibility. Golfers with previous generations of Covert can use shafts with the original adaptor in the new head or vice versa.
