Danny Lee on the verge of attaining greater heights

T

his could be the year that Danny Lee emerges from the pack. The New Zealand golfer has made a strong start to the 2015 season on the PGA Tour and that could well prove the platform from which he vaults to something more significant. The previous season Lee earned $US780,000 on the PGA Tour. At the end of last month he had already more than that for the 2015 season with $US830,000 in the bank. What that means is Lee will have no trouble retaining his card for next year’s PGA Tour, the world’s richest golf circuit. And what that means is Lee does not have to keep looking over his shoulder as to who is coming up behind him. And what that means is that he can just play golf. And what that could mean is the outstanding potential he showed as an amateur could finally be uncorked.

Firstly we have to remember that Danny Jin-Myung Lee is only aged 24 but has already achieved much. In 2008 he became the youngest to the win the United States Amateur Championship at the age of 18 years and one month. That record has since been beaten by a 17-yearold but at the time it beat by six months the record held by one Tiger Woods. Lee subsequently became the world’s No 1 ranked amateur. In 2009 he won a professional tournament while still an amateur. That was the Johnnie Walker Classic in Perth which carried a first prize of nearly 236,000 euros. That was worth about $NZ580,000 at the time. His win in Perth also saw him become the youngest winner on the European Tour at 181/2 years. Lee’s win in the US Amateur saw him gain a start in the 2009 Masters Tournament at Augusta National. His game fell apart in the

second round after infamously six-putting the 10th green and he failed to make the cut. Can you imagine having a six-putt? Three putts are bad enough, four putts disastrous but having another two is unthinkable. But Lee now appears to be growing in confidence, especially if his dress sense is any guide. During the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida last month Lee wore canary yellow trousers that stood out like – well, canary yellow trousers. In the last round of the same tournament his trousers were black and white. That’s not so bad, you think. But to match the trousers he wore black and white shoes - one black and one white. Lee finished 17th in the Arnold Palmer event, including the low round of the tournament with an eight-under par 64 on the second day.

From amateur to NZ Open winner in six weeks J ordan Zunic became a professional golfer in January. Six weeks later, at just his fourth start as a professional, he was the winner of the New Zealand Open. And with the win can full exemption for the rest of the season on the PGA Tour of Australasia and the guarantee of three starts on the Japan Tour this year. To say that Zunic was unaware of the bonuses that came with winning the New Zealand Open, sponsored by car manufacturer BMW, is an understatement. “I was just planning on having to prequalify for everything later this year,’’ Zunic said. “I didn’t even know about the Japan starts until they told me at the end, so that’s unbelievable too. I just can’t wait to start the journey – this is only the beginning.” It was a meteoric rise for Zunic who picked up the winner’s purse of $171,000 in the $1 million tournament. The 23-year-old Australian from Wollongong in New South Wales had only gained a start in the New Zealand Open with a top 10 finish in the New Zealand PGA Championship in Auckland the week beforehand. And he only gained a start in the NZPGA Championship by being a Monday qualifier. But those events pale somewhat in comparison to a bad motor vehicle accident he was involved in about 18 months ago in the United States. Zunic was hospitalised for a week with a fracture to an elbow in three places and did not play golf for several months afterwards. “It was tough coming back from that,’’ Zunic recalled. “I didn’t know if I could get back to my best. I didn’t know if I’d even be able to play golf again when it first happened. “Since then it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride with my golf, but this is what I want to be doing so I worked my butt off and it’s nice to have some rewards for your hard work.” Zunic won the New Zealand Open by one shot from fellow Australian David Bransdon with a stunning shot on the final hole

NEWS the moon. Bransdon was second at 20 under par, a bogey at the last proving costly for him. Third at 18 under was another Australian, Kristopher Mueck. Zunic’s win in the New Zealand Open was the fourth in a row for Australians following Dimitrios Papadatos (2014), Jake Higginbottom (2012) and Brad Kennedy (2011). There was no tournament in 2013 with a change of dates from November to February/March. To cap things off for Zunic he won the tournament’s proam event in combination with Maryanne Marlow. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Joshua Munn claimed the Bledisloe Cup for the leading amateur at the NZ Open. Munn, 24, was the only amateur to make the cut and finished in a share of 23rd place at 10 under par. Said Munn: “It’s an amazing feeling. I didn’t even know there was a prize for the leading amateur until yesterday when someone told me after my round, so I’m pretty happy. “I think I’ve visited 16 different countries now around the world and Queenstown is my favourite place – it’s absolutely awesome. However, the success has not encouraged Munn to relinquish his amateur status just yet. The young Kiwi wants to hone his game at the big amateur events in Britain and the

Meuck and Miller score course records at PGA Championship

A

course record was achieved by two players at the New Zealand PGA Championship and they ended up finishing first and equal second. Australian player Kristopher Mueck was the first to set a course record when he shot six under par 64 on the first day of the four-day event at Remuera in Auckland last month. The other was Matthew Millar, a fellow Australian, who scored his 64 on the third day before going on to win the $125,000 tournament which carried a winner’s purse of $18,500. Millar’s 64 on the third day saw him start the last day with

a two shot lead. That lead was narrowed to one at the halfway stage on the final day but in the last few holes he edged further ahead to score by three. Millar, 38, has been a professional golfer for 16 years and his win in the NZPGA Championship was his first on the PGA Tour of Australasia. The win was also a reward for a near miss in his previous tournament a fortnight earlier. That was the Queensland PGA championship when Millar and Cameron Smith were pipped at the post by Ryan Fox of New Zealand who had eagles on the third-last and second-last holes.

Hendry wire-to-wire in Lawnmaster Classic M

ichael Hendry racked up his fifth win on New Zealand’s Charles Tour when leading all the way in the $40,000 Lawnmaster Classic at the Manawatu Golf Club in Palmerston North. The Auckland professional set a hot pace when posting eight-under par scores of 64 on the first two days and ended up winning by three shots. Hendry said he was pleased just to be back in the winner’s circle. “It’s been a while since I have won a golf tournament so this feels good,’’ Hendry said. “It was a good ding-dong battle on the front nine (on the last day) but a birdie on 12 put me in a good position. “This is such a tight golf course off the tee, if you miss the fairways you’re in the trees. There are some tough tee shots out there, so I just made sure I made the right mistakes when I made any.” Hendry had the luxury of being able to par the final six holes as local amateur Josh Munn finished with a flourish to score a nine-under par 63 in his final round. In the women’s section Wenyung Keh, of Auckland, won her first Charles Tour event despite a late charge from Wellington’s Julianne Alvarez. The latter shot the lowest score of the tournament for the women with a sevenunder 67 on the last day but it was not enough with Keh finishing with a four-under 70. Keh’s winning margin was four shots and afterwards she thanked younger sister Siyi who was her caddy. “It was great to have my little sister Siyi on the bag. Having her there really helps me control my nerves and now I have a Charles Tour title under my belt just like my older sister Munchin.”

Kristopher Mueck’s partner wins pro-am

Auckland sisters first and second in Melbourne Auckland sisters Munchin and Wenyung Keh finished first and second in the prestigious Riversdale Cup at the Riversdale Golf Club in Melbourne. Munchin Keh, 22, was the winner and included a brilliant five-under par in the third round which set up the victory. Munchin ended up winning by six shots with a total for the four rounds of four over par. She had rounds of 77, 75, 68 and 76 on the par 73 course. Wenyung Keh was one of three players to share second. Wenyung had a final round of five-under par which saw her catapult up the leader board. Sharing second were Princess Superal and Hanna Green. The latter had finished second to Lydia Ko in the previous week’s New Zealand Open. Munchin Keh, a former New Zealand Amateur winner, also had a strong performance at the New Zealand Open, finishing at threeunder par in a tie for 22nd. These two performances now put her firmly in contention for the 2015 Queen Sirikit Cup team. Waikato golfer Nick Coxon also enjoyed a fine week across the Tasman in the same event last month with his even par total of 288 securing him 8th place. The winner of the men’s Riversdale Cup was 20-year-old Wollongong golfer Travis Smyth, who pipped Lucas Herbert in a playoff.

M

ark Richardson has taken out the inaugural ANZ Celebrity Challenge in Queenstown which was run in conjunction with the New Zealand Open. Richardson (pictured right, we think he’s the one on the left), was awarded the trophy by organising committee chairman John Hart (we know he’s the one on the right – he’s far more famous). Richardson, who apparently used to open the batting for a country cricket team (we don’t think he got into a city team), won the celebrity pro-am event as the last man standing. The other 11 former sports stars all failed to make the 10team cut for the final round. Richardson’s win had nothing to do with being paired with the Open’s thirdround leader Kristopher Mueck who eventually tied for fourth. In an exclusive interview with Golfer Pacific (or was it a press release?), Richardson was interpreted as saying: “I don’t know how I got paired with such a good pro, he must have just asked for me because he knew I was such a good performer. (You won’t believe this but the press release actually read: “... because he knew I was such a god performer.’’). God performer? “I think the chairman of the organising committee will say that’s he’s responsible-

but don’t listen to a word he says.” But in the moment of victory Richardson, who has a bit part in a television sports programme, showed a rare expression of humility (Mark, that means modest opinion of one’s importance). He credited Mueck with their success.

“He definitely carried me the whole way. I need to give him a back rub or something like that for carrying me because he’ll have tight shoulders.” Readers, please join me in saying well done Mark. Okay, you don’t have to.

Wellington golf driving range and 9-hole course for sale A rare opportunity has arisen with Silverstream Golf Park, a major golf driving range and 9-hole golf course in Wellington, having been placed on the market. The driving range, pictured above, has 20 elevated covered bays with full floodlighting, which allows the driving range to operate at night. It has the current hours of being open until 9pm every day. There is also a grass area

immediately adjacent to the driving range from which golfers can hit from. The driving range area is long and wide and allows for the big and not so accurate hitters. The driving range is long established as one of the premier practice areas for Wellington and visiting golfers. It has been operating for 20 years. Silverstream Golf Park is more than just a driving range. Also

part of the complex is a 9-hole golf course which is ideal for beginner and casual golfers. The course comprises five par 4s and four par 3s and measures nearly 1500m in length. It is on flat land and provides easy walking. The golf course is affiliated to New Zealand Golf which means scores can be entered for handicapping purposes and club members can receive reduced

green fees when playing at other New Zealand courses. Silverstream Golf Park is situated off Fergusson Drive at Silverstream in Upper Hutt and is amongst the mecca of golf courses in the Hutt Valley and therefore there is a steady custom of golfers throughout the year. Same courses for next year’s NZ Open

A

“WONDERFUL” week of golf showcasing New Zealand to the world has been praised by professional players and celebrities alike, according to BMW New Zealand Open organising committee chairman John Hart. At the presentation ceremony, organisers announced that next year’s tournament will be held from March 10-13 and again on both The Hills and Millbrook Resort courses. “The pros on tour say the tournament is something very special, and having the Cricket World Cup celebrities here has been an absolute plus, they’ve been tremendous,’’ Hart said. “All the celebrities want to come back. But this is so much more than a golf tournament, it’s an opportunity to showcase the country. “We’re delighted with the quality of the TV pictures we’ve seen, enabling the world to see the beauty of the Queenstown region.” This year’s tournament was played over four days from March 12-15 and was a sanctioned tier one event on the PGA Tour of Australasia, as well as having a partnership with the Japan Golf Tour Organisation. Hart said the tournament was achieving its goals with regards to the Japan Tour and as a platform for business. “Eleven of the fourteen pros we brought

tivity that the event brings.” With John Key as Prime Minister and tourism minister, Hart said he didn’t think there was any other Prime Minister in the world who did what he did. “He played at Jacks Point yesterday, spoke at a trade and enterprise breakfast this morning and played here at The Hills today. He loves golf, he loves Queenstown, he loves New Zealand.”

NZ PGA Championship proved the ideal springboard

E

arly last month Jordan Zunic took a punt on travelling to New Zealand to try and qualify for the Holden NZ PGA Championship. A talented amateur with a number of titles under his belt, including the China Amateur Championship, Zunic was nearly killed in a serious car accident in the United States in 2013. But luckily he made a full recovery and decided 2014 was the year to turn professional. He went through the PGA Tour of Australasia qualifying school system, but failed to make the final stage in January this year. Effectively out in no man’s land, he was forced to rely on Monday qualifying to get starts in professional tournaments. On March 2 of this year he lined up with 50 other hopefuls at the Akarana Golf Club in Auckland in an effort to qualify for his second professional tournament. Pulling his own trundler around a layout he had never seen before, Zunic shot a one over par 71 to finish in 17th equal position. Normally a maximum of 10 places are available through pre-qualifying, but a series of late withdrawals had boosted this number to enable him to scrape into the Holden NZ PGA field at Remuera. Zunic was quickly into his work at Remuera and rounds of 67, 66 and 69 saw him playing in the final round in the second last group alongside Ryan Fox and Kristopher Mueck. In the tough conditions on Sunday afternoon he faded with a 75 to just get into the top 10 for the tournament. Luck was again on his side as those above him were al-

ready eligible for the BMW New Zealand Open, enabling him to secure a direct start in Queenstown. The rest, as they say, is history. Zunic put together a 21 under par total to clinch the NZ Open title with a stunning approach shot on the 72nd hole which hit the pin and left a simple putt for birdie. His two weeks in New Zealand earned him over $180,000, a hatful of world ranking points to lift him 1200 places to number 404 in the world, entry into five events on the 2015 Japan Golf Tour, and full exemption until the end of 2017 on the PGA Tour of Australasia. The days of pulling his own trundler look to be well behind him. Zunic’s story is a great example of how narrow the line is between success and failure in the world of professional golf. It is also a classic example of how rapidly things can change in a short space of time if opportunity coincides with a hot patch of form. That is the dream that will continue to inspire other unknowns to emulate his success and change their lives. It’s also a great endorsement of the need for at least two high level professional tournaments in this country, to provide the right sort of opportunities for the players, to attract stronger fields and to build the profile of golf. The return of the Holden NZ PGA Championship to Auckland ticked these boxes, as well as bringing out excellent crowds considering the other sporting distractions around at the same time. It proved to be an out-

standing curtain raiser for the BMW NZ Open with Auckland form reflected in the results in Queenstown. That message – and the pathway capitalised by Jordan Zunic – will not have escaped the attention of players who chose to bypass the PGA Championship or to not come to New Zealand at all. That may well make it harder for a New Zealander to win one of the events, and in particular to break the NZ Open drought of 12 years since a local victory, but overall it has to be good for golf.

Zunic’s story is a great example of how narrow the line is between success and failure in the world of professional golf...

The Cinderella story from the caddies’ ranks A

s the caddy master for the 2015 BMW New Zealand Open, I get to meet many interesting people who are keen on golf and want to be involved in the tournament. Caddying is a great way to do this. Even New Zealand’s most famous caddy, Steve Williams, started off carrying a golf bag when the NZ Open rolled through Wellington in the early 1980s. Here he met some of the best golfers playing the tournaments and off he went travelling the world carrying a golf bag. At this year’s tournament we had our own “Cinderella story” with Royal Wellington Golf Club member Jaimes Wood caddying for the eventual winner, Jordan Zunic. According to Wood, he wasn’t even planning to caddy at the open. His Queenstown friend, Peter Gresson, invited him down to “do some fishing and play some golf” around the time of the open. Upon arriving in Queenstown,

Winner Jordan Zunic with caddy Jaimes Wood, with the 2015 BMW New Zealand Open trophy.

the weather in Foveaux Strait was poor so they cancelled the fishing and headed straight for golf. Learning that the open was short of caddies, Jaimes decided to put up his hand and make contact with me. After a quick chat about his golfing ability and his under-

standing of caddying, I connected him with a professional who required a caddy. Jaimes wasn’t sure his pro would need a caddy for Saturday and Sunday after searching for Zunic on the internet and reviewing his qualifying school record and lack of a status. Wood thought he might be able to book his own tee times

and planned to watch the golf in the afternoons. Zunic and Wood made arrangements to meet on the Thursday one hour prior to the tee time. Right from the beginning, Jaimes could see his player had the game. The rest is well recorded as the relationship between player and caddy grew over the tournament. According to Jaimes (now nicknamed “Woody”), on the Sunday, he and Jordan both knew that Jordan was tied at the top of the leader board. An exchange took place that went something like, Jordan to Woody “Wow, so many people”, and Woody replied: “Relax -- they are having a party - they’re not even watching” referring to people in the Champion’s Lounge, a comment made to relax Jordan. Woody then added “I’m (expletive removed) exhausted. I can’t make a play-off so you’ll just have to smoke this one!” Jordan proceeded to use a 9-iron for 145 metres. He knew

immediately that he had hit the ball well -- as you do. Both men walked off the eighteenth hole in tears. This was a mind blowing experience for Jaimes Wood, who confirmed a discussion about being on Zunic’s bag if he is back to defend next year. He’d be delighted if there was a long-shot chance of also supporting him in Japan and Australia. Many of the caddies that signed up this year had a great time “inside the ropes” and being close to the action. All in all, 77 amateur and 35 pro caddies were needed. Once again, we will be looking for 110 registered caddies for the 2016 tournament. To register your interest, email caddy@bmwnzopen.com. Sorry, we cannot guarantee a story like Jaimes’s, but you will likely walk away with a very unique and interesting golfing experience.

READER’S VIEWS

Nine-hole golf is not just a transition to 18 holes

14  GOLFER PACIFIC April 2015

T

hank you Andrew Whiley for your article “where is the growth in golf?’’ (in last month’s issue of Golfer Pacific). You have raised some good points but you also seem to be misled about where nine-hole golf is in the present day and what its potential holds for the future. From what I understand the format of nine-hole golf was promoted to be the starting point for golfers who would progress to the full 18 holes or “proper’’ golf as some still call it. This has not happened that way at all, yet many believe it is still its sole purpose. Nine-hole golf is a growing game in its own right and should be given that opportunity and respect. It is not just for newbee’s or the elderly as you imply. I am glad you recognise that the “traditional ladies” golf club is “out of date’’ but you still perpetuate the myth that nine-hole golf is a “transition’’ to proper golf. I notice just this week that Wairakei International golf course in Taupo is introducing a nine-hole Tui membership. They do not mention that you need to be a beginner or incapable of playing 18 holes. As a professional coach maybe you, other coaches and clubs should take more responsibility for your “students’’ to go to the next stage and develop a programme that includes introductory rounds, basic rules and etiquette education. It is not enough just giving basic lessons and then throwing them in the deep end and at the mercy of 18 hole players whom, in your words, “don’t want them’’. And where might I ask do your “non-ladies’’ go? The nine-hole game is where the amateur social player is heading and this should be capitalised on and marketed as such. The new player today, unless very golf focused, has a lot of opportunities open to them and all day golf just does not fit in their busy work or home commitments. Nine-hole golf can and should be promoted as a respectable alternative to 18hole play. Most lapsed 18 hole golfers I have spoken to say it is TIME that has stopped them playing but they look forward to taking it up when they retire! Can golf clubs wait that long? Let us be clear, the golf drive, fairway shots, pitching, chipping and putting are exactly the same for nine as for 18-hole golfers. Yet there are differences that should be acknowledged. I would like you to think

about these salient points about the nine-hole player • They do not have the luxury of a few “warm up’’ holes. • the last few holes cannot be a ‘wind-down’ • 4 or 5 (or more) bad /disastrous holes cannot be quite so easily hidden. • To play nine holes a golfer needs to be focused and ready to play from the beginning. Just imagine how the strategies of games like soccer, rugby or any other sport would change if they have to produce a result in half their usual time? At our club we are an eclectic group of mostly professional women who have been playing for a number of years. Nine-hole golf gives us the opportunity to play more rounds of golf, and still be competitive and social. Lower fees may be a factor but not the reason many do not play 18 holes. Our nine-hole players can often play during the week without having to leave work early or schedule a whole day as a game can sometimes be completed within one and a half hours. We have been on overseas golfing holidays together and easily played 18 holes as we are more than capable physically and obviously have more TIME. Golfers who have played for 10 years or more do not consider themselves as beginners and in my seven years of playing I have only noticed three players “graduate’’ to 18 holes. There are also about five to six male nine-hole golfers registered but there is no competition specifically for them. They are a credit to their gender whom I am sure eat quiche and not afraid to wear magenta (that’s a sort of a pink colour, by the way). They are not novices or too old to play the full 18 holes. They just cannot commit to the longer time needed for 18 holes. I find it sad that you and NZ Golf have over looked the nine-hole player as a player in their own right. There needs to be a strong push from professional coaches, clubs and NZ Golf on the merits of ninehole golf. Try searching ninehole golf on the official NZ Golf web page? So let’s all raise our hats and caps to all golfers, irrespective of their age, gender and capabilities who turn up in hail, rain and shine looking and hoping for at least one memorable round, hole or even shot that will bring us back keen and eager next time! Yours sincerely A nine-hole golf player Lorraine Gibson Wellington

ike Golf is laser-focused on gaining athlete insights to innovate with one thought in mind: Make everything better so golf athletes can perform at their best. The new Nike Lunar Control 3 shoe is no exception. Nike designers incorporated feedback from Rory McIlroy, the No. 1 golfer in the world, and created the ultimate lightweight performance golf shoe that is more stable and comfortable while maintaining lightweight control. For McIlroy, who has one of the most powerful golf swings on the planet, stability and control from the ground up are critical. Because of the rotating force in his swing, McIlroy challenged Nike designers to create a solution that provides better traction, prevents slipping and retains the control needed to generate power and speed. in the medial forefoot on the outsole and secondary traction elements in the Nike Lunar Control 3. “Rory worked with us to increase the stability of the shoe,” said Carl Madore, Nike Golf Innovation Design Lead. “To achieve that, we not only added a spike, but also brought the traction to the outside of the leading edges of the shoe to create that stable base. In the past we had a lot of spikes a little bit inboard and we really wanted to focus on bringing them to the perimeter to leverage that stability piece.” The Nike Lunar Control 3 also features a wider base for increased stability and to allow the golf athlete to maintain contact with the ground for as long as possible through impact. A carbon fiber midfoot shank also delivers lower, lighter and more stable control. “I love the look of the shoe and how much lower to the ground it makes me feel,” McIlroy said. “With the in-

creased traction and stability, I am able to be more aggressive with my swing and do not have to worry about slipping.” Like its predecessors, the upper of the Nike Lunar Control 3 utilizes Nike Flywire technology for adaptive lateral support while using more robust cables to help secure the foot effectively. “It is the Nike Flywire in conjunction with the extra traction that help athletes maintain control,” Madore said. “With Rory, he creates so much torque that we are leveraging the Flywire in the midfoot to contain his foot. It is basically the symbiotic relationship between the outsole and the Flywire that is the key to the whole design of the Nike Lunar Control 3.” ••• NIKE LUNAR CONTROL 3 AVAILABILITY >> Mar 2015: White/Volt >> April 2015: White/Lyon Blue >> RRP – NZ$339.99

GOLF TRAILS NORTHLAND

THE PLACEMAKERS SENIORS MIXED OPEN 4BBB STABLEFORD TOURNAMENT ON Sunday afternoon the 22 February some 10 Motor Homes and Caravans heralded the arrival of some 96 golfers to the Bay of Islands Golf Club, Kerikeri. Players enjoyed a courtesy afternoon of golf on the picturesque expertly manicured course before attending a Wine and Cheese evening welcome and briefing where the conduct of play was outlined for the next four days (Wednesday being a lay day). The three Division field comprised representatives from 23 North Island Golf Clubs, two from the UK and one from Canada. Of the North Island Clubs, 12 were from the Northland area, 6 from the greater Auckland area and 5 from south of Auckland. Play commenced at 8am Monday under overcast skies with light showers predicted with Three Divisions of players teeing off from Tees 1 and 10. Play continued on Tuesday under similar skies. Cheese and crackers, iced water and quarters of Nashi pears were a welcome relief at the Club House as players passed through after completing their first nine holes. After a Club House dinner on Tuesday night with live entertainment and a fine quiet rest day on Wednesday (some golfers

using the day to visit many of the numerous tourist sites in the immediate area), round three commenced under fine hot skies on Thursday morning. Friday morning, again under hot skies, play commenced at 7.30 am so as to ensure all matches were completed in time for prize giving early afternoon. Four pairs were ‘hell bent’ on maximising their time on the course by having to decide their matches by a ‘sudden death’ play off. From a field of 96 players, 69 elected to participate in the daily two’s competition. 24 players between them shared 19 dozen golf balls. Margaret Murray (Whangaparoa) recorded four Two’s. Unfortunately, of the 27 players who did not participate 11 recorded at least one Two.

Pictured are the divisional winners, back, Neil Pyne (Placemakers, Kerikeri); Alan Watkins (Warkworth); Bob Bell

(Warkworth); David Sherman (Whangaroa); front, Athalie McHardy (Warkworth); Margaret Murray (Whangaparoa); Bertha Leslie (Whangaroa).

JUNIOR TIGERS GET SET FOR FINAL FOUR golfers from have qualified from the Northland District to the National Final of the Junior Tiger competition at the Manawatu Golf Club on Sunday April 12.

The four golfers to progress from the categories of 11 and under (girls and boys) and 12 – 14 (girls and boys) are Setiny Pheng (Sherwood Park), Craig Hockings (The Pines), Belinda May (Northland) and Bradley Foster (Whangaroa).

The total number of junior golfers involved in the day was 36 and they were well supported by around 50 family and friends as they tried to win their District event or gave golf a go for the first time. Belinda May winner of the Junior Tiger 12-14 Girls Division is excited to be heading to the National Final. “I am really looking forward to meeting new people and I will enjoy attending the event for the second time. “I have increased my practice hours recently and have been attending as many tournaments as possible. I have recently won the Auckland U.S Kids Tour player of the year, 12-14 year old girls and have received an invitation to play in the US Kids Teen World Champs in Pinehurst, North Carolina, USA in July. “My short game will be a focus, along with keeping myself calm.” The day was a fun day out for all the family with pre round games and entertainment with the tiger meeting and greeting all the players. New Zealand Golf began its hunt for this year’s Junior Tiger over the weekend at clubs all around the country. The young golfers are playing for the chance to represent their district at the National Final and potentially travel to the United States to represent NZ in the World Junior Golf Championship. Golfers of all abilities are encouraged to give golf a go on the day. “It is great to see that many players starting out playing golf who played the first Junior Tiger event are back again playing Junior Tiger this year, “ said Liz McKinnon the New Zealand Golf High Performance Coordinator. “They are now regular golfers vying for a spot to the National Finals and hoping to win their way to Disneyland and the Junior World Championships.” McKinnon said that there are a number of players who have gone on from Junior Tiger to achieve great things in golf. “Lydia Ko is a great example who was a national winner in 2009 and is now the number 1 female golfer in the world.” Every junior golfer who entered the qualifiers around the country during March goes into the draw to win a trip to Disneyland with a family member courtesy of Harvey World Travel. KEOWN GOES BACK TO BACK WAIPU junior Braden Keown has won back to back titles at the Northland Under 21 Championship held at Kerikeri Golf Club on Sunday 15 February. Played over two rounds the 17-year-old had by far the best opening round score, a two under par 71 which included a five under par back nine that had him six ahead

of visiting North Harbour junior James Hydes.

A second round 79 gave those in the chasing pack a small chance but with no one able to produce the low round required Keown was awarded the title for the second straight year. Hydes finished with matching rounds of 77 to finish four shots adrift and take second place. In the nett competition Whangarei junior Chris Shepherd followed up his recent win at the Frank Fitchett Junior Open with another impressive performance. Nett rounds of 72 and 69 had him seven strokes ahead of his nearest rival. He was joined in the top three by Keown and Wellsford’s Jamie Thomas. The girl’s competition got off to a slow start with Brooke Kingi (Whangaroa) posting 83 to lead by one from Soktaera Sean (Northland) after the opening round. Both girls upped the ante in the afternoon round with Kingi going through the turn in three under and Sean one under. After an up and down back nine the pair stood on the eighteenth tee with Sean two ahead. An unfortunate triple bogey opened the door for Kingi who finished in style with a birdie to claim the win by two shots.

The girls nett was a closely fought competition with two players finishing tied for first. Taylor Wyatt-Logan (Whangaroa) and Soktaerodh Sean (Northland) each finished on a total of 147. Kendal Wyatt-Logan (Whangaroa) won the Kiwi competition with Hayley Macalister (Northern Wairoa) and Camryn WyattLogan (Whangaroa) second and third.

GILL AND NEHO IN GOOD FORM JUNIOR member Taylor Gill recently competed in the NZ Mens Foursomes at the Mt Maunganui Golf Club. Played over 36 holes, hitting alternate shots Taylor and partner Kadin Neho (Whangarei Golf Club) were runners up with rounds of 69 and 70, a 5 under par total. They finished 1 shot behind winners Luke Brown (The Pines) & William Howard (Tauranga). Taylor & Kadin were also the Northland team selected for the Grant Clements Memorial Trophy. This is played individually over 72 holes with the four best scores of the 2 players, counting. They finished 7th overall. In the individual competition Taylor finished 16th equal with 4 even par rounds of 72, the best of all the Northland players in the field. 

The 12-year-old had her name and face plastered all over the media after qualifying for the New Zealand Women’s Golf Open and has been dubbed ‘Little Lydia’ after being compared to Lydia Ko. “I’ve gotten used to being in the media,” she said. The young star lives in Gulf Harbour, Auckland, just a few minutes walk from the Gulf Harbour Country Club golf course – which Lydia Ko belongs to – where she spends most of her time. Bohyun started playing golf four years ago in Saudi Arabia after a family friend saw her out on the driving range having fun. He asked if he could teach her, and then later suggested they move to New Zealand to further her golfing career. Bohyun said she likes living in the area. “When I first came here I thought it was quite clean and a nice place,” she said. She attends Wentworth College where she is part of an academy programme which allows her to finish school about 1.30pm so she can practise golf. Bohyun is no stranger to working hard for her dream and trains every day. “After school I play nine holes and practise, or sometimes I go to the gym and do light weights and core.” She is training hard to achieve her new goal of being ranked in the top 10 or 20

amateur golfers in the world. Wentworth principal Bruce Tong said despite all the media attention Bohyun remains the same. “She’s a good, happy student and gets along with everyone,” he said. “She’s always smiling and gets involved with lots of school activities.” Bohyun also has a good friend and role model in Lydia Ko. The Kos and the Parks are family friends after a chance meeting at the Gulf Harbour course. “It was the day after we arrived in New Zealand and Bohyun and I went to the golf course and were chipping,” Bohyun’s father Ju Ha said. “There was no-one there. It was a nice day, but there was no-one around. I saw a

lady about 300 metres away and she had a nice swing. I went over to say ‘hi’. I told her my name was Ju Ha Park, she said, ‘Hello, I’m Lydia’.” Lydia was 14 at the time. The families have been friends since and the Parks have received plenty of advice from the Kos. It was Lydia’s father, Gil Hong, who suggested Bohyun join forces with Lydia’s former coach Guy Wilson. The pair have been together for six months and Bohyun is already noticing the difference.

MUNCHIN KEH CLAIMS THE SILVERWARE IN MELBOURNE STORY: NZ GOLF

AUCKLAND golfer Munchin Keh has claimed the prestigious Riversdale Cup at the Riversdale Golf Club in Melbourne. Played earlier last month. The 22-year-old from Titirangi Golf Club fired a superb five-under par third round to set up her eventual victory at the Riversdale Golf Club. Her four over total was six better than her nearest competitors that included her fast finishing sister Wenyung. Wenyung’s final round five-under par 68 catapulted her up the leaderboard into a three way tie for second place. Munchin had rounds of 77, 75, 68 and 76 to finish on 296, six shots clear of her sister Wenyung, Princess Superal and Hanna Green, who finished second to Lydia Ko

at last week’s ISPS Handa New Zealand Women’s Open. The former New Zealand Amateur Cham-

pion also had a strong performance at last month’s ISPS Handa New Zealand Women’s Open, finishing at three-under par in a tie for 22nd place. Waikato Golfer Nick Coxon also enjoyed a fine week week at the same event last month across the Tasman, his even par total of 288 secured 8th place. Northland Golfer Kadin Neho and Tasman representative Ryan Chisnall both fell short of the cut line and were left to support their fellow kiwis over the weekend. The winner of the men’s Riversdale Cup was 20 year old Wollongong golfer Travis Smyth, who piped Lucas Herbert in a playoff for the title.

MEN’S GOLF AT PUKEKOHE THE Karaka Cup has been played and the winners were John Taft and Allen Hilton over Mohammed Aziz and Keith Wright. The Fred Wharfe has also been decided with Brian Sutherland prevailing over Bruce Turnbill. Well done to the winners and next time for the runners up! Everyone at Pukekohe should now be queuing up for the Championship Pairs and Kauri Log.

SENIOR’S GOLF AT PUKEKOHE THE Friday Scrambles at Pukekohe Golf Club are going well - there is a good spirit and some new members joining the club as they enter the autumn season, quite regularly fielding 40 players. The club is halfway through the Ed Strachen Trophy games with Sylvia Webb in the lead, George Lowe and Airi Kanuku 3 points behind. Peter McLean has generously donated a beautiful cup in memory of his late wife Joan who was club champion 16 times. This new trophy will be played for in the Spring. On April 8th Pukekohe travel by coach to Ngaruawahia for the away leg of our annual match-up. Terry Evans has organised 2 working bees, the first was to prepare the bamboo hedge on the 14th for it’s haircut, that was a mission with some minor casualties. Then while the course was shut for coring the volunteers removed the debris left behind by the arborists who felled some trees. We have some wayward hitters who knew these trees well, it was like saying goodbye to old friends. If anyone would like to join these working bees which are a mix of fun and achievement

REID IMPRESSES AGAIN AT NGAHINEPOURI STU REID from Ngahinepouri Golf Club has once again had an impressive result with his golf. On Saturday the 14th of March 2015, Stu shot a fantastic score of 68 off the stick over 18 holes, shooting one shot less than his age. A notable feat! Congratulations Stu!

JILL MORGAN CLAIMS TITLE WAIKATO’S Jill Morgan claimed the 2015 Senior Women’s Champion title in a Scottish themed ceremony back in late February with the trophy presented by Marnie McGuire. The event was completed on February 26 and was played at St Andrews (Hamilton Golf club). Morgan not only took out the NZ Golf

LAKE VIEW Golf & Country Club

in Rotorua

Senior Challenge Cup but also won the Nora Curtis Cup for best overall round and the Eileen Nut Salver for the lowest net. It was Morgan’s week with wins today in the semi finals over fellow Waikato teammate Robyn Pellow, 2 and 1, before she clinched the final in a nail biter against defending champion, Brigit Holford. In reaching the semi final today, Morgan had earlier in the week beaten Judy Randell from Wellington, 4 and 2. She then met Suzette Eastmond from North Harbour, a match she won 2 and 1, to set her up for todays Waikato semi-final. This mornings semi final included displays of brilliance from both Waikato representatives that had them neck and neck for most of the first nine with Pellow dropping a birdie on the 8th to sneak ahead by one, at the turn. Morgan answered with a birdie on the par 5, 10th then winning the next 2 holes to secure a lead that Pellow could not retrieve. The afternoons final match between Morgan and Holford, fought out in blistering sun, saw both players struggle with some heat exhaustion and arguably not their best golf. After nine holes the players

were all square, until Holford won the 12th hole with a par, where Morgan bogeyed. It look liked Holford would make it two in a row, until she bogeyed the 17th, to allow Morgan the chance to square the match with the tricky par 3 18th of St Andrews to come. This short but steep 81-metre par 3, deeply bunkered has been the downfall of many matches and it would prove to be Holford’s nemesis. She fired a shot into the bunker only to fire her next shot out of bounds. Now playing four out of the bunker, it was left to Morgan to collect after a well-targeted shot that lay only 4 metres from the pin. Holford conceded the hole and the coveted Cup has passed hands once again. Holford had earlier won her semi-final 2up against Trish McBride from Kawerau. In accepting the Veterans Challenge Cup, Morgan acknowledged her mother, Ngaire Hall from Taumarunui who won the cup back in 2005 at Inglewood. “I’m humbled”, stated Morgan in accepting the three trophies, and “I feel honoured”. Other winners tonight included Kay Meade from the host club winning the Vesta Cup for the best round by a player aged 70 and above, with the Waipukurua

Landon was the only player who managed to shoot under par during the two-day tournament & he finished with a 1-under par 69 in 50.34 minutes on Sunday. Olympic 1500m silver medallist Nick Willis, who finished second at the speedgolf event on Sunday, said the achievement was remarkable. The event attracted 25 players to the Rotorua Golf Club. Landyns score of 119.34 (the sum of his time and golf score) was better than secondplaced Willis, who posted a personal best of 122, finishing with an 84 in 38 minutes. Landyn now has to get to America for the final and it looks like about five weeks for him to get ready, so I hope you will all help Landon get over to the final in the States!

TUESDAY LADIES GOLF AT MANUKORIHI MANUKORIHI Golf Club had another lovely sunny day to play Round 1 of the Nancy McCormick 18 holes foursomes. At one stage, there was much excitement and noise heard from the 14th green when both Christine Ogle and Jo Foreman played lovely chips into the hole, much to the relief of their partners who then didn’t have to putt. Their two partners, Joc Pretty and Helen Watt then both repaid Christine & Jo by putting into the hole for “twos” on the 15th green, causing more shouts of excitement, which were heard over the course by the other players. The competition of the day for the 18 hole players was narrowly won by Helen Watt & Jo Foreman who scored a nett 65.5. As mentioned above, twos were scored on the 15th hole by Jo & Helen and Christine & Joc; and also on the 9th hole by Renette & Joy E. The 9 hole competition was won by Dot Colville & Diane Bryant. Congratulations to you all! The lucky raffle winner this week was Dot Bowers.

TIGER EVENT POPULAR AS EVER TARANAKI GOLF CUBS STORY: TARANAKI DAILY NEWS

THIRTY-FOUR young golfers took part in this year’s Junior Tiger tournament at the Manaia Golf Club March 8 Sunday. Played over nine holes of gross, the Junior Tiger initiative has been held each year since 2009 and has proven to be a popular event for budding golfers throughout the country. In the 12-14 girls’ section, Brylee Winter (43) edged out Tineka Kumeroa (44). Max Shearer (37) beat Monty Burmester (39) to win the 12-14 boys’ division. Chelsea Kumeroa (54) won the under 11 girls’ division and Dillin Plimmer (51) beat Brayden Hills (54) to take out the under 11 boys’ division. Section winners will now play in the national final at the Manawatu Golf Club in Palmerston North on Sunday, April 12. The fourth round of men’s handicap

GOLF TRAILS pennants on March 8 produced some tight matches as well as a few lopsided results. In division one of the North section, Manukorihi One squeezed past host club Waitara 5-4 to all but guarantee their place in the knockout stages. Tumahu kept their hopes alive with a 5½-3½ win against Westown Two. Kaitake were the biggest winners of the day, thumping Fitzroy One 8-1 to stay top of the table. Only a heavy defeat by Tumahu in the final round of section play will deny them a place in the quarterfinals. In division two, the match between Manukorihi Two and Westown One saw Manukorihi come out on top 5-4 to secure a quarterfinals berth. Despite the defeat, Westown are almost certain to progress. Kaitake Two have a mathematical chance of progressing, but a 6½-2½ defeat by Inglewood One has effectively ended their chances. In the Taranaki-wide section played at Fitzroy, Manaia 100% record in division one came to an end with a 6-3 defeat at the hands of Opunake. Eltham’s 5½-3½ win against Stratford saw them leapfrog Manaia to go to the top of the table. Te Ngutu’s 4½-4½ half with Inglewood Two ended both teams’ chances of progressing to the next stage. In division two, Fitzroy took advantage of playing on their home course to record a comfortable 7-2 victory against Patea.

Reigning champions Pungarehu finally got their first win of the season with a gutsy 5½-3½ win over Te Ngutu Two. The results mean that it is possible that all five teams could finish on four points after the final round of matches in Patea next month. It was hard not to be impressed by local Brad Hayward’s showing at last month’s New Zealand Open. A newcomer to the professional ranks, his performances at The Hills and Millbrook were extremely noteworthy. Testing conditions on the final morning stopped Hayward (72, 68, 72, 77, 289), from shooting four consecutive rounds of par or better. Despite the final round blip, it was a great effort playing and while finishing in a tie for 70th was not what he was hoping for heading into the final round, the fact he was around for the weekend is testimony to the solid start he has made to his professional career.

LADIES COMPS AT TE NGUTU THE Ladies competition year is in full swing at Te Ngutu Golf Club. One competition the Edgecombe Tray has been completed with some great scoring, but no one finds out the winner until the end of the year. A number of people have played in Open Days and tournaments during the last few months. Ten Te Ngutu ladies played in the Taranaki Strokeplay at Manaia in January. Enormous congratulations go to Holly Winter for winning the 36 Holes Gross (74 & 72), Brylee Winter won the 18 Hole Division (79) and guess who, yes me got 3rd Nett (63) in the 18 Hole division. At Stratford Open day, Trudie Smith & Louise Abbott were in the prize list, Kathy Bloor, Trudie Smith, Sharleen Robinson and Christine Johnson featured at Hawera Combined Picnic Day and 2 of us went to Urenui and enjoyed a lovely walk in the sunshine. Jan Canty, Heather Boyd, Helen Kelly and I attempted to bring back the Clytie Vine trophy (which a Te Ngutu team won last year), but to no avail, however we did come 3rd. We have welcomed Clare Bishop as a 9 hole member, if there was a prize for the most enthusiastic golfer, Clare would get it, great going Clare.

MENS PENNANTS AT TE NGUTU WE are off and running again for another year, fielding two competitive teams in the Taranaki wide competition. Still amazes me that Hawera can’t put a side together, Stratford scrapes together a few players each week, and the northern clubs won’t travel past Inglewood (pathetic is how I see it).

Matt Cleaver has again put up his hand to sponsor and cap-tain the #1 team, easily recognisable in the lime green shirts. Certainly can’t be missed on the course and thanks to Matt’s wife Dee for selecting them. Team is Matt Cleaver, Jed Boyce, Mark & Josh Morris, Jamie Johnston & Alan Kemp, with Colin Radford as reserve. John Lovell has taken on the #2 team again, with Repco as the sponsor. They too are in a green strip, this time a dark green that suits the complexion of the older players and to those who show up with hangovers on the Sunday morning, eg. Jarron Pittams, woke at 5am in the middle of a field somewhere, still half cut, but still managed to go on and win. Team is John Lovell, Sam Jones, Murray Smith, Mike Jones, Brian Walsh, Jarron Pittams and Malcolm Berry. Team One lost to Opunake at their home course in the first round, but had a good win over Stratford at home in Rd 2. Team Two had a bye in Rd1 and a good win over Fitzroy in Rd2. Next round sees #1 play Manaia and #2 up against a strong Waverley, all at Stratford.

STORY: HUTT NEWS

EASTERN HUTT Rotary and Boulcott’s Farm Heritage Golf Club has tee’d up another big cheque for Te Omanga Hospice. For the 10th successive year their annual twilight golf tournament raised more than $10,000, making a grand total of more than $100,000 over the past decade. Te Omanga chief executive Biddy Harford told the golfers that government sources provide about $4 million of her annual $6m budget, and that they depend on the community to provide the remainder. This year’s contribution from the golf tournament will go towards lifting equipment that costs about $8000, and the remainder will be used for high-tech mattresses that undulate to keep bed-ridden patients comfortable, she said. Desmond Darby, President of Eastern Hutt Rotary, said that for this year’s ninehole Ambrose tournament there was the full complement of 144 players, who all enjoyed the twilight event. BURNSIDE HIGH WIN SECONDARY SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIP THE Canterbury Secondary Schools Championship was contested today at Waimairi Beach. The players were lucky to avoid the predicted rain with Waimairi Beach experiencing reasonable conditions for the Championship. Nine teams were contesting the title, the competition was wide open for a new school to edge it’s name on the trophy after St Bedes dominating the Championship in recent years. Burnside High School’s team of Amelia Garvey, Juliana Hung, Tom McLorinan and Hiroki Miya produced a solid team performance to win the title with the best three scores counting towards their score of 220, five shots clear of the runners up Christ’s College which was represented by Rory Williamson, Jake Jang, William Bastings and Nik Bull. Darfield High School’s team of Hillary O’Connor, Mark Wilson and Jayden Hann despite only having three players won the net competition by one shot. The winning Burnside High School team will travel to Wellington to compete at the New Zealand Secondary Schools being played at Manor Park on 31 August. The individual trophy was won by Hiroki Miya (Burnside High School – pictured) after shooting a one under par 71.

said Lara. “It was so nice of him and his classmates in Room 8 to write letters to myself and some of the other players. “This is a great place and it only got better to have a welcome like that.” Hugh said he knew Lara was a long way from home so thought he would tell him “a couple of things” about Arrowtown. “I told him he could go to the Museum and hire a gold pan for $2 and go to the river and find some gold,” he said. During his 50-minute visit Lara did warm up stretches with students on the school playing field before batting in a game of cricket. Eight-year-old Sophie Rasmussen walked away with bragging rights after bowling him out.

LARA HITS ARROWTOWN SCHOOL CHILDREN FOR 6 INTERNATIONAL cricket legend Brian Lara made an Arrowtown schoolboy’s day – with a lunchtime visit to his school. The West Indian left-hander – was in Arrowtown to play at the BMW New Zealand Open last month. He surprised teachers and students at Arrowtown School with the unannounced visit, during which he batted in an impromptu cricket match and held a signing session. The reason for his visit? A letter written by eight-year-old Hugh Hodgson welcoming him to the golf tournament and helpfully telling him a few things he could do in the historic village. “He sent me a very nice letter and after a good day of golf yesterday it put that extra smile on my face to read it at my hotel,” 30  GOLFER PACIFIC April 2015

THE world’s most famous caddy stepped up to the mark as Steve Williams (pictured) shared his lifetime of top tips and advice at the BMW New Zealand Open. Over 100 caddies turned up to Steve’s ‘Caddy Clinic’ held at The Hills in Queenstown, on the eve of the 2015 BMW New Zealand Open. Steve was open and honest about his experiences and shared invaluable knowledge that money couldn’t buy. “A lot of the guys who have volunteered their time haven’t caddied at this level. There’s a certain etiquette involved,” he said. “When you caddy at the highest level the thing that makes the difference is the psychology of it. You have to read someone’s reactions, you have to be very very good at reading someone’s mind. “It’s like being a horse jockey – you have to feel comfortable with the horse you’re riding. “It’s also like a marriage. A caddy spends more time with a player than anybody else does. If they’re playing at the top level its ten hours a day for 35 weeks of the year.” He had a number of top tips to share, including the biggest ‘No No’. “Don’t be late. A pro should never have to wait for his caddy. “The other top tip is to not give bad information. You have to know the golf course inside out, don’t give a bad yardage. “Being a caddy is not a job many people want to do, but I have been obsessed with it.”

FROM 4 TO VROOM! A SELECTION of sporting celebrities competing in the BMW New Zealand Open took some time out to participate in a different sort of challenge – driving a fleet of new BMW models as part of a series of skill tests at Highlands Motorsport Park. The international sportspeople, consisting of rugby, cricket and golf representatives, were put through their paces by BMW Driving Experience instructor, Mike

Eady. The star-studded array of personalities included, amongst others, golfers Mike Hendry and Steve Williams, former All Blacks Andrew Mehrtens and Justin Marshall, cricketer Mark Richardson plus dual rugby and cricket international, Jeff Wilson. “As would be expected, there was a huge amount of competitive rivalry amongst such a group of acclaimed international sporting superstars,” said BMW Driving Experience Instructor, Mike Eady. “It was a closely fought battle between the codes and all players excelled in a variety of different experiences. “Without naming names, there were a couple of guys who were able to adapt to the conditions better than others and managed to set some impressive times. All I’m at liberty to say is that, as far as I’m concerned, the best sports team won on the day.” Each of the three teams had to put forward one person to complete each of the challenges, consisting of a gymkhana, acceleration test and an ‘ice slalom’ test on a skid pan. Points were awarded for fastest runs, whilst clean runs didn’t attract any time

penalties. A team challenge, worth double points, rounded out the on-track activities. Team Golf claimed the inaugural BMW Driving Experience Ultimate Driving Machine challenge, with team members including Michael Hendry (NZ), Steve Williams (NZ), and Brad Kennedy (Aust). Pictured are Nathan Astle, Justin Marshall and Andrew Mehrtens.
