Northern Ireland compared to North and South Islands
S
omeone said to me the other day that New Zealand golf was at a low ebb — we weren’t winning on the world stage like we used to. Where are the Michael Campbells of today, he asked. Look at Northern Ireland, he said, and the ratio of top class golfers to its population. I don’t know what that ratio is but with New Zealand’s population of 4.5 million we punch well above our weight. For starters we only have the world’s No 1 women golfer, Lydia Ko. That’s pretty good, isn’t it? At the time of writing, Lydia had only won six times on the world’s toughest tour for women, the LPGA Tour. She had only earned $US2.6 million on the LPGA and more than $US600,000 for this season. But what’s worse is Lydia turned 18 on April 24. She’s nearly over the hill. There’s that wave of South Korean six-year-olds about to come through. Then there’s the world’s toughest golf circuit for men, the PGA Tour in the United States. We only have three players on that tour. That’s pretty good, isn’t it? I know what you are going to say next. Two
of them aren’t doing very well. That’s true. At time of writing Steve Alker and Tim Wilkinson had yet to have a top 20 finish. But there’s still plenty of time for either or both to find some form. Then there’s Danny Lee. He’s doing well, thank you very much. Near the end of last month he had had two top 10 finishes, including a third. His earnings at the time were a very healthy $US840,000. Not bad for a 24-year-old, would you say? A little lower down the pecking order are Michael Hendry and Josh Geary. Hendry won the Lawnmaster Classic at Palmerston North in March. I hear you bursting into laughter. And, yes, I do mention that Charles Tour tournament somewhat in jest. But just a month later Hendry transformed that form into winning for the first time on the Japan Tour. Hendry picked up a mere $NZ284,000 for that win. Imagine what the guys that finished just behind Hendry at Palmerston North are thinking. Also last month Geary won the opening event on the PGA Tour of China. The win was only worth $NZ45,000 but at least it’s some money in the bank and importantly a win is a win.
Geary will be sticking to that tour as the top five in the order of merit will earn conditional status on the Web.com Tour in the United States. And what about our amateurs. There is a host of youth and promise there. Last month we had the youngest final in a New Zealand Amateur when Daniel Hillier and Sam Vincent fought out the men’s final. Their combined aged was 33. Hillier, from Wellington, went on to win the final and become the youngest ever winner at the age of 16 years and 267 days. Oddly enough the previous youngest was Danny Lee. He was 16 years and 272 days when he won in 2007. In the women’s final of the NZ Amateur, it was 18-year-old Julianne Alvarez against 16-year-old Alanna Campbell. On this occasion it was the oldie Julianne who won. She had won the same tournament two years earlier at age 16. Julianne heads to the United States to join with Washington State University in September to further her golfing career. Best of luck, Julianne. And best of luck to all our other golfers that are not as good proportionally to those in Northern Ireland.

Two players, one club, one coach – two NZ Amateur Championship wins plugged in the bunker. But she did very well to get within 10 feet of the hole and sank the putt to seal the victory. Said Alvarez of the last hole: “With the plugged lie, the bunker shot was good, but when the putt went in, that was way better.” Alvarez became New Zealand’s No 1 ranked player which she said she would be proud of. “It’s something I’ve always aimed for. I’ve been working at it for a long time and things are coming to fruition. It sits well with me, it’s where I want to be, it feels good. “This win means a lot because to get my name on the trophy again is pretty special, and to have both

hen it comes to doubles this is not one the TAB would have bet on. Two players, both in their teens, both from the same golf club and both under the wing of the same coach – and between them winning the men’s and women’s divisions of New Zealand’s most prestigious amateur tournament. It’s a double double double that not even the most desperate TAB bookmaker would have dreamed of framing a market for. But it occurred at the New Zealand Amateur Championship in Auckland last month when Daniel Hillier comfortably took out the final of the men’s division and Julianne Alvarez held on for a dramatic win in the women’s final. Both are coached by Kevin Smith and both are from Manor Park Golf Sanctuary in Wellington. Hillier, at age 16, is the youngest men’s winner of the tournament and Alvarez by comparison is almost an oldie, at age 18. In another double, it was Alvarez’s second win in the event. She too was aged 16 when she won in 2013. Smith, who has been coaching for more than 30 years, said the two wins made for one of the proudest days of his career. “Absolutely. To have two players in the final – and both win – was huge,’’ Smith told Golfer Pacific. “These two players are really special individuals. Both are extremely mature for their ages. Both are highly focused, determined and disciplined. “Technically both have made great progress over the last few years and are starting to get an all-round game. “But perhaps their biggest attributes are their mentality, maturity and understanding of how to play the game – how to get around the golf course the best they can.’’ How far can they go? “Who knows?’’ Smith replied. “I’m not going to say they are the
trophies in the cabinet.” Hillier’s final was less dramatic, scoring a 6 and 5 win over Sam Vincent from Waikato. Hillier said afterwards: “I’ve been working with Kevin Smith for four years now and we have made some really good progress for a while now and have realised that this could be a really big part of my life. I honestly didn’t think I would be standing here as the winner this week, especially only being sixteen. “I’ve been hitting plastic golf clubs since I could walk and went out for a few holes with my Dad a couple of days before I turned five and have trucked on from there.”

next Michael Campbell or Lydia Ko because that would be foolish. “But what I would say is there is nothing right now to suggest they cannot achieve whatever their dream goals might be. But we are in New Zealand and we are a long way from the rest of the world only time will tell.’’ Wins at this level are nothing new for Smith who coaches in Wellington and on the Kapiti Coast. He was the coach of Andrew Green who won the 2006 New Zealand Amateur while another of his students was Sarah Nicholson, winner of the 2004 New Zealand Amateur and the 2006 Australian Strokeplay. Alvarez heads to the United States in August to join Washington State University to further her golfing career. Smith said such a move could only be good for her game. “We are both a bit cautious about it but at the same time excited about it,’’ he said. “The facilities, the golf courses and the competition are going to be of a very high standard but she
is going to be where she wants to be. It could be the making of her.’’ Alvarez’s win in the New Zealand Amateur at the Titirangi Golf Club topped off some outstanding form. Just three weeks earlier she had won the New Zealand Strokeplay Championship at Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, north of Wellington, when she posted a course record 67 in her final round. The seven-under par record was bogey-free and included an eagle and five birdies. A week earlier, in the Lawnmaster Classic at Palmerston North, she had also scored a seven-under par round in her final round. The women’s final of the New Zealand Amateur went right to the wire. Alvarez looked set to win on the 35th hole when she reached a par five in two. But she three-putted and her opponent Alanna Campbell got up-anddown from the rough for a birdie and Alvarez’s lead was reduced to one going to the last hole. The match looked set to go to a playoff when Alvarez’s second shot on the 36th hole ended up

Seventh club double for NZ Amateur IT was originally thought the wins of Daniel Hillier and Julianne Alvarez at the New Zealand Amateur was the first time two players from the same club had the won event in the same year. But some digging of the archives revealed this is the not the case for the two Wellington 4 GOLFER PACIFIC May 2015
players from Manor Park Golf Sanctuary. The previous time the club double was achieved was nearly 40 years ago when Auckland players Terry Pulman and Kaye Maxwell from The Grange won in 1977. Some may recall the names of Pulman and Maxwell. The latter
later became a professional golfer while Pulman was associated with Auckland Golf. Pulman’s father Roy was a New Zealand Golf tournament director. In total there have now been seven occasions when two players from the same club have won the NZ Amateur. But it has to be
said there were many fewer clubs when the first five were achieved. The seven double winners are:2015 Daniel Hillier and Julianne Alvarez (Manor Park GC). 1977 Terry Pulman and Kaye Maxwell (The Grange GC). 1933 B V Wright and Miss O Kay (Otago GC).
1911 A D S Duncan and Miss L Brandon (Wellington GC). 1897 A D S Duncan and Miss L Wilford (Wellington GC). 1895 G Gosset and Mrs Malland (Otago GC) 1894 H McNeil and C Wilder (Christchurch GC).

Alvarez posts course record on way to NZ Strokeplay victory A
uckland golfer Wenyung Keh scored a three-under par in the final round of the New Zealand Strokeplay Championship which, considering she shared the lead at the beginning of the day, would normally be sufficient to secure victory. But the party was well and truly spoiled by Julianne Alvarez of Wellington who produced a course record seven-under par at the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club to win by four shots. It was the second week in a row that Alvarez had shot seven-under par following the same score in the final round of the Lawnmaster Classic in Palmerston North. On that occasion it was not enough for Alvarez to win. It took her into second and ironically the winner of the Charles Tour event at Palmerston North was Keh. Alvarez said her score of 67 at Paraparaumu had to rate better than her sevenunder par the previous week. “This feels like a lot better a round,’’ she said after her Paraparaumu victory. “I guess you could say that this is my best
round ever. My ball striking was good and I was able to put myself in good positions to make putts. “On a course like Paraparaumu Beach you have to keep yourself in play and in the right position and I did that well today.” Alvarez’s 67 was bogeyfree and included five birdies and an eagle. It was her second New Zealand title. She had won the New Zealand Amateur Championship in 2013. “I’m very proud of myself,’’ Julianne said. “I went out thinking I have to play solidly and I did that all week. I had no idea it was a course record today as I was treating the round very much like a match play round with Wenyung.” Alvarez is from Manor Park Golf Sanctuary and is the second from that club to win the New Zealand Strokeplay. The first was Lynnette Brooky who
won the tournament at the Otago Golf Club in 1992. Brooky is these days coaching at Manor Park.

ew Zealand golfer Josh Geary came from four shots behind to win the year’s opening event on the PGA Tour of China. The event was the Buick Open at Mission Hills last month and Geary began the final round four behind leader Yi Cao of China. But on a wild day for the leader, Geary hit the front with a long birdie putt at the 11th hole. Five front-nine birdies from Geary, winner of the 2013 Western Australia Open, had put the necessary pressure on the leader and Geary looked a chance to run away with the tournament after his hot start. But things got tense on the back nine with two dropped shots in the final four holes meaning Geary had a nervous wait to see if his one stroke lead would hold up. Playing three groups behind Geary, Cao made an error off the tee at the par five 18th, hitting a wild drive into the right rough and being forced to take a drop from an unplayable lie. First prize in the tournament was worth $NZ45,000 which represents Geary’s biggest win of his career.

Geary wins opening event in China N Michael Hendry’s breakthrough win in Japan A YEAR’S supply of rice was amongst the prizes for New Zealand golfer Michael Hendry when he scored his maiden win on the Japan Tour. The win came in the Token Homate Cup at the Token Tado Country Club in Nagoya last month and while the prize of rice might seem trivial the win was nothing but that. The tournament carried prizemoney of 130 million yen, which equates to $NZ1.4 million. First prize was worth 28 million yen, or $NZ284,000. Also part of the winning prize was a Toyota car but because Hendry is not a Japan resident he was not able to keep it and would therefore need to sell it. But just as importantly it was a break-

through for Hendry who has been on the Japan Tour for three years and is now guaranteed to remain on the tour through to end of the 2017 season. Hendry, who had won the Lawmaster Classic at Palmerston North a month earlier, began the final round at Nagoya three shots behind leader Hyun-Woo Ryu but started well to make the turn two-under par before catching fire on the back nine. With five birdies over the final nine holes Hendry posted a sizzling 31 to post a sevenunder par score of 64, the equal best round not only of the week but his Japan Tour career. Hendry’s previous best finish on the Japan Tour had been tied for sixth.

Queen Sirikit Cup team for Hong Kong Julianne Alvarez and sisters Munchin and Wenyung Keh will be looking for an improved result when they again represent New Zealand at the Queen Sirikit Cup this month. The same three players represented New Zealand at last year’s Queen Sirikit Cup in Malaysia but would have been disappointed with a 10th placing from 13 nations. This year’s event is being held at the Hong Kong Golf Club from May 20-22 and the New Zealand team should be a stronger combination given they all have a little more experience. The Queen Sirikit Cup is an annual contest between up to 14 nations from the Asia-Pacific region, which is officially known as the Amateur Ladies AsiaPacific Invitational team championship. The best two scores count towards the team’s total. Alvarez, from Wellington, has been in top form with wins in both the New Zealand Strokeplay Championship at Paraparaumu and the New Zealand Amateur Championship in Auckland. Wenyung Keh won the Lawnmaster Classic at Palmerston North before finishing second to Alvarez at Paraparaumu while Wenyung’s older sister Munchin is now a seasoned campaigner and won the Riversdale Cup in Australia in March. New Zealand has won the event three times with the successes coming in 1984, 1990 and 1999.

New Zealand Golf – Annual Report published N
EW ZEALAND GOLF recently held its annual general meeting which offered us not only the chance to review our progress in 2014 but also join together with our member District Associations, life member and other key stakeholders at the annual Chairman’s dinner. This is a great occasion where the key administrators in the industry can gather each year and celebrate all that is good about our game. When we do look back, it is clear great progress was made in in 2014. The progress of our new strategic direction has been very pleasing although it is early days and we have much more work to do. It has been quite a big shift for us and I believe the new focus on growing and supporting the game is entirely appropriate given the challenges facing so many of us in the golf sector. Increasing our efforts to support the clubs and grass roots of the game with club support staff has in particular been a very positive move. While this initiative is in its infancy, I can see it quickly becoming the most important part of our business. Although we have made great progress, we’d certainly like to have more engagement and interaction with clubs. We’re trying to do all we can but there is no question we make much better progress when we work together. I am mindful that we have only really started in this area and there is much more work for us to do. There are lots of challenges facing us all and the team here at New Zealand Golf couldn’t be more committed to delivering more support to our clubs in order for the game to grow.’ Aside from reviewing our progress at our annual gen-
his balance isn’t back to what it was, he now walks unaided. An avid sports fan, he watches sport on TV, walks every day, goes to the gym and pool and plays nine holes of golf twice weekly. Earlier this year we hosted Josh at the BWM NZ Open and it is his dream one day to visit Augusta National for the Masters. I hope Josh achieves that dream as his passion for the game is unrivalled and I’m sure it would give him a great deal of pleasure after what has been an incredibly difficult period in his life. Josh’s story is a timely reminder about the value of our wonderful game. I know our small team here at New Zealand Golf all feel very privileged and enriched to work for a sport that does so much for its participants.
eral meeting, this year we were privileged to hear our guest speaker Josh Hartwell inspire us with his story on how his love of golf has truly enriched his life. In fact, it is golf that Josh has used to rehabilitate himself after many had given him up for lost with a brain injury. It is almost a miracle that a man who doctors thought might not live, much less walk again, can now get through nine holes of golf. Back in 2007 he embarked on a training run for the London Marathon and woke up from a coma two months later. He’d had everything going for him. A 2003 Massey University technology graduate, Josh worked for Lion Nathan before going on his OE, and had a great job in London with GlaxoSmithKline’s marketing team. Josh grew up in Levin, where he captained the Horowhenua College 1st XI football and cricket teams and went on to play for the Massey 1st XI football side and the Manawatu-Foxton Cricket Club. But then came the day he collapsed on the footpath of a busy London street. Josh doesn’t remember anything about that training run but would later learn that he’d suffered cardiac arrest at the age of 27, caused by a rare, undiagnosed congenital heart condition. From being so weak that he couldn’t lift his head off the pillow, he graduated after therapy to a wheelchair, standing for a few seconds by himself using a high frame, then elbow crutches, then a walking stick. Celebrating coaching success
O
n Sunday, April 19, the New Zealand Amateur Championship was completed at the Titirangi Golf Club in Auckland. The men’s and women’s champions were both from Wellington, both from Manor Park Golf Sanctuary in Wellington and both have been long-time students of Wellington NZPGA teaching professional Kevin Smith. When was the last time that the winners of both the men’s and women’s championships were from the same city? Or even from the same golf club? Or even more specifically, coached by the same person? Kevin was quick to sing his praise for the individuals on his Facebook page: “extremely proud and happy coach... I have had players win both the women’s and the men’s amateurs... but not on the same day. Can it get better than this? But wait... more great things are due to come for both of these players. It has always been an absolute pleasure watching them grow both as golfers... but also as... more importantly... young adults! Hard work... strong work ethics... maturity beyond their years... and hugely respectful young adults... with whom I am both lucky and proud to be associated with! This in large is due to the wonderful parenting and family values that both of these play-
ers share. Thanks mums and dads... all the hard work and commitment you have always provided has been well worth it, I’m sure! Along with the great support of NZ Golf, Wellington Golf, their network of providers and the Manor Park Golf Club and it’s members”. Kevin has an extensive track record as the New Zealand women’s coach and the Wellington coach for the men and women’s teams. He previously coached Sarah Nicholson to go on to win the Australian Strokeplay Championship, Andrew Green who went on to win the NZ Amateur in 2006 and Julianne Alvarez the NZ Amateur Champion in 2013. Some of his other former students include Eddie Lee, Ben Campbell, Amy Cho and Inhong Lim. He spends most of his time coaching golfers of all levels on the Kapiti Coast and at Silverstream Golf Park in Wellington. He runs an active junior golf programme with over 80 young golfers at the Paraparaumu, Waikanae & Otaki Golf Clubs. Earlier in the week, Jordan Speith was crowned the Masters champion. One of the great stories that came out of Jordan’s win was his history with his Australian coach Cameron McCormick. Cameron first met Jordan when he was 12 years of age. So over the past nine years together they worked on Speith becoming a champion
and forged a partnership that has been a win-win. It is the teamwork, and both the knowledge of the coach and the desire of the student to learn and improve. Both have mutual respect for each other and work extremely hard, having built a strong belief in and bond with each other, ensuring they share in the success. Julianne first met Kevin when she was seven years of age, when she attended some junior golf programmes. Eleven years later she is able to celebrate her second championship with her coach. Daniel has been working with Kevin since he was 12. Together they have had many successes and really built a strong golf game. Not many 16-year-olds win a national championship. Too often coaches are cast aside for short term gain and “hare” results when the “tortoise” approach provides a stronger long term foundation in performance. All great coaches thrive on results but the truly great are there when the going gets tough and work with a pathway forward to achieve. I personally believe that Kevin deserves to be nominated for Coach of the Year for Wellington and the Halbergs. In any sport a coach that is able to claim students that have won the nation’s most prestigious male and female championships is to be celebrated.

Great tournaments and great yarns W
ith another Masters tournament over (can it get any better?), thoughts inevitably turn not only to the rich history behind the major championships, but also to the even richer lore of sometimes obscure incidents and anecdotes from the past. The first of these at Augusta was undoubtedly Gene Sarazen’s albatross at the 15th hole in the 1935 Masters, which led to an unexpected victory. In those days scores were relayed from each hole to the main clubhouse scoreboard by a team of runners and when his two on the par five was posted, it was thought to be a mistake, as it was deemed improbable if not impossible for the 15th to be reachable in two shots back then. But of course Sarazen had done the “impossible’’, setting the pattern for many more examples of incredible golfing skill from the world’s top players from a total of 79 Masters tournaments played to date at Augusta National. Lesser lights have also had their day in the sun at this famous venue. In 1971, the British player Maurice Bembridge, who would probably be described as being more at the journeyman end of the player spectrum, set a new course record of 64 including a stellar back nine of 30. Years later he was able to recall every one of those 30 shots, and he clearly played Augusta somewhat differently to today’s stars. For example he hit a four iron into the short 12th, rather than the eight or nine irons employed by most in the 2015 field.
However, his most memorable moment came at the next hole. Back then all caddies were supplied by the club, another of Augusta’s quirks which remained until some years later. Bembridge arrived at his ball to find a 60cm long highly poisonous water moccasin snake nearby, and his caddy many metres away in a very frightened state. Meanwhile, Bembridge was keen to finish his round as quickly as possible and catch his plane back to the United Kingdom. He pulled a two iron from the bag and despatched the snake with a single blow, cleaned the club in Rae’s Creek and then used it to hit his second shot to the front of the green, from where he two putted for one of his six back nine birdies. No snakes, to my knowledge, have since been sighted on the course and I can only assume the Augusta National Golf Club must have carried out a major eradication programme with its usual thoroughness, perhaps using somewhat different methods. Some 20 years later Welshman Ian Woosnam arrived at the 18th tee needing a par to secure victory. Although Woosnam would have been in a close contest with Sarazen for being the shortest (in height) player to win a Masters, he was at that time one of the longest hitters in the world. His problem was to hit a shot that missed the left-hand fairway traps, and by using some

lateral thinking he took a route no one had attempted before by driving over the crowd onto the adjacent fairway, from where it was a simple eight iron to the heart of the green for a very non routine par. The Augusta greens’ committee immediately countered this by moving the tee back 30 metres the following year, thereby eliminating “Woosnam’s alley”. Golf is certainly a game steeped in statistics, arguably overdone in some areas (see pgatour. com for all the numbers you’re ever likely to need). But the real history, though, lies in the continual discovery of new stories and new angles on the great venues and great tournaments alike, relayed down the ages and in golf clubs around the world. To my way of thinking, that is the true essence of golf, and long may it continue.

NEWS Rodney back to Castlecliff IT is with great pleasure that the Castlecliff Golf Club welcomes back Rodney Donaldson as the golf manager of the club. Rodney was a junior member here from the mid 90’s and represented the club and district throughout his time here but left Wanganui a year after finishing high school in 2004 to pursue other things. After working 4 years at Sharpies Driving Range in Hastings under the tutorship of Andy McNair he has now completed his PGA traineeship and is a fully qualified NZPGA Golf Professional. Rodney’s tasks will include organising and running of golf tournaments, liaising with the various committees and marketing the club for new members and visitors. Your chance to assist the recovery after Cyclone Pam: Vanuatu Golf Open 2015 F
ollowing the devastation caused to Vanuatu and the Golf Club by Cyclone Pam, both the VGO Committee and the Port Vila Golf & Country Club Committee have decided that the VGO in the normal format will be postponed until 2016 and that an alternative event for 2015 will be implemented.
The Digicel VGO 2015 Cyclone Pam Recovery Event The 2015 event (1-6 September) will move the major focus to charity and project support for the local Mele communities in and around the Mele area. The event will include a smaller professional field playing for a significantly reduced prize pool. The committee’s intention will be to make the event open to any professional wanting to play and support the recovery from Cyclone Pam but only the “Invitational Field” will play for the limited purse. The committee hopes this pool will be around AUD$10,000. Many amateur players have been competing in the event for over 20 years and the committee wants to make this year a “Come Back to Vanuatu” and play The Open year. In doing so, all players will be putting much needed Vatu back into the local economy and supporting projects that the
committee will identify over the coming months that will improve the lives of the people of Mele who are an integral part of the Vanuatu golfing community. Digicel, our naming rights sponsor, together with our other great corporate sponsors have been hit hard by the effect of the cyclone and the committee has recognised that asking sponsors to commit to their normal levels of sponsorship would be a hard call this year. The committee will negotiate with all sponsors an affordable level of support.
Our accommodation sponsor, The Holiday Inn Resort Port Vila, will unfortunately not be able to re-open in time for the event and therefore will be unable to accept accommodation bookings. Alternative accommodation options will be released shortly.
social activities are concerned but can assure intending players an excellent week as usual with plenty of golf and social activities planned. This year, more than ever, the Vanuatu communities need your support on their path to recovery.
The event is run under the banner of the NSW PGA and they also have endorsed the committee decision to postpone the 2015 full VGO and run with the recovery event.

A fantastic opportunity to sample good old fashioned British links golf without the 20 hour plane ride! Don’t miss it.
CARVED out of 65 hectares of native woodlands, with fairways lined by towering gum trees, this unique layout is unlike any other resort course on the Gold Coast. Palmer Gold Coast (formerly Robina Woods) possesses maturity well beyond its years, and has developed a reputation as one of Queensland’s best-loved resort courses. The rolling fairways, manicured greens, and towering eucalyptus trees are strikingly beautiful and blend harmoniously with the surrounding residential development. A natural water-course featuring lakes, ponds, creeks and native wildlife completes a rare golf course environment. The front nine holes are particularly striking as the trees envelope you as you move around, and the final

The championship resort layout meanders its way through 39 hectares of towering eucalyptus, picturesque lakes and serene waterways. Flowering native and exotic trees and plants abound, while ornate bridges cross watercourses in which luxuriant lilies jostle for space The distinguishing feature of the course is the clubhouse, with its Colonial Queenslander design. Major upgrades to Gold Coast World Masters T HE Gold Coast’s premier golf resorts, a brand new 19th Hole, world-class entertainment, hotel upgrades and a band of services usually reserved for elite players are just some of the innovations club golfers will experience at the 20th annual World Masters Golf Championship on the Gold Coast from 25 to 31 October 2015. Hosted by Go Golfing, awarded Oceania’s Best Golf Tour Operator at the World Golf Awards, the World Masters is Australia’s biggest ‘week of golf’ for club golfers. Over the past 19 years more than 13,000 golfers from every state in Australia and visitors from 28 countries have travelled to the Gold Coast to enjoy the golf, competition, fun, friendship and hospitality synonymous with the World Masters. The tournament is open to all club golfers over the age of 35. There are 15 tournament divisions based on age and handicap. Playing with golfers your own age and standard is one of the World Masters popular traditions. All golfers play 4 rounds of stableford competition while ‘A’ graders also compete for the best gross. Go Golfing’s tournament director Peter McCarthy told Golfer Pacific NZ that a growing band of sponsors had provided the backing for his team to put together the best golf and entertainment program ever offered to World Masters participants and partners. “Ladbrokes are the title sponsor this year while Srixon and Mercure Resort have joined Virgin Australia, Panasonic, Thrifty, Golf World and Oasis Shopping Centre as major supporters.”
The Pines, 17th
According to player surveys, the number one reason for participating is the Gold Coast courses. With this in mind Go Golfing targeted the Gold Coast’s top four resort courses for the tournament. “Securing board approval for the private, membersonly, The Pines at Sanctuary Cove to host the World Masters for the first time is just fantastic. Most golfers would never have had the opportunity to play The Pines. Norman, Nicklaus, Palmer and Player compet-
ed for riches in Skins tournaments at The Pines and this is where Adam Scott honed his skills and still calls home.” Links Hope Island, host of the Johnnie Walker Classic won by Ernie Els, the Greg Norman designed Glades and the newly redesigned RACV Royal Pines Resort, home to the PGA Championship and Ladies Masters combine to host the four round World Masters in 2015. Participants also enjoy a range of event
services normally reserved for the top professionals. Players are transferred in private coaches to and from the courses each day. There’s a valet service that takes your golf clubs from course to course and clubs are on your allocated cart before you arrive. Free range balls, golf lessons, test driving the latest release golf equipment all add to the golfing experience. The World Masters also has a new home. Mercure Gold Coast Resort, surrounded by Palm Meadows and Lakelands courses, has undergone a $30 million makeover to the rooms, restaurants and bars. Rooms are $30 a night cheaper than last year and free upgrades, free wifi and 15% discount throughout the Resort. While golf is a major drawcard, there are quality social and entertainment events in-

cluded every night. Opening night will be an Aussie BBQ and seafood smorgasbord under the stars with fireworks and big name comedy acts. A singles get together prior to the welcome dinner has been added this year. Poolside at Mercure Resort will be home to the 19th Hole. Sporting a different theme each night – beach party, golf trivia, country & western, there will be finger food, pub priced drinks, live entertainment, golf presentations and big screen replays of the golfing action. Craft beer and wine tastings are a new addition to the 19th Hole
this year. Festivities culminate with a gala presentation dinner. More than $100,000 in prizes are awarded. The World Masters has given away $1.6 million in prizes. Eight new cars, trips to the US Masters and golfing holidays to the world’s best golf resorts have been given away as lucky draw prizes. Sydney’s Jerome Ballard has attended the last 14 World Masters tournaments and has registered again for 2015. “It’s the highlight of my golfing year. Regardless of my form going in, I never pay well at the Masters, but I really enjoy the courses. I
have never played The Pines at Sanctuary Cove, so I am looking forward to that. The whole week runs like clock-work and Go Golfing know how to spoil us golfers. Its great value and loads of fun.” The tournament package is $899 for players registering before 15 July. The package includes 4 round with carts, welcome and presentation dinners, 19th Hole, tournament shirt, $100,000 in prizes and more. PETER LEE SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS HARCOURTS WAITANGI PRO-AM TITLE PETER LEE (pictured), after winning the Harcourts Waitangi Pro-Am in 2014, and finishing second in this year’s Whangarei Pro-Am the day before, looked like the
likely front runner for this year’s Harcourts Waitangi Pro-Am, on Thursday the 2nd April, and that’s just how it turned out. On a stunning Bay of Islands day, the scenery was no distraction, as Lee birdied the 1st, and 3rd holes on the front nine, and then came home in 32, birdying the 10th, 12th, 13th, and 18th, for a 6 under 66, successfully defending his win of last year on the picturesque Waitangi Golf Course. Runners up were Pieter Zwart, and Dongwoo Kang, on 67, followed by Josh Carmichael, and Brad Shilton on 68, followed by last year’s runner up Ryan Fox on 69, also on 69, were Sam An, Kelvin Jones, Woonchul Na, and Fraser Wilkin. It was a great field of 38 Professionals, from as far away as Queenstown, plus 30 amateur teams, which were made up of three amateurs, and one professional, playing in a best 3 of 4 stableford format. The teams event was taken out by Kaths Boys, No1, which was made up of three of the best amateurs in Northland, being Kadin Neho, Northlands number one, and New Zealand Amateur Champion last year, playing off plus 1, Julian Fowler off 1, and Christian Nitsche, also playing off 1, with their Professional being Ryan Fox. What a day they had, with all shooting under 70, and winning with a team score of 135. They were followed by Team Carpet Court, made up of Kelvin Jones, Professional, Shane Murray, Alistair Hargrove, Graham Wright, and then Team Admiralsview Lodge, and That Coffee Bloke,
made up of Sam An, Professional, Craig Boles, Mark Yarrall, and Grant Hastings.
Pictured is Kadin Neho, Professional Ryan Fox, Juilian Fowler and Christian Nitsche. The event went exceptionally well, there was a full field, everyone was complimentary, the course was in fantastic order, a tribute to the work done by Greenkeeper Alan Smithyman and his band of helpers. A big thank you to all the Sponsors Harcourts, Carpet Court Kerikeri, Far North Holdings, Duke of Marlborough Hotel, 35 Degrees South, Radio Live, Bettershedz, Caltex Waitangi, Frucor, Placemakers Kerikeri, Kaths Catering, Fullers Great Sights, Scenic Hotel, Blue Pacific Apartments, Kerikeri Colour Centre, Taylormade, Alex Bonnington, Northland Forestry Nursery, Admiralsview Lodge, That Coffee Bloke, Mitre 10 Mega Whangarei, Rockgas, Coastal Plumbers, and Copthorne BOI. THE GRANGE AND ROYAL AUCKLAND MERGE IN $100M DEAL AFTER long and protracted discussions The Grange and Royal Auckland Golf Clubs
have finally merged entitles as at April 30 of last month. Under the deal the South Auckland courses would be merged into one super 27-hole course with full driving range and short game facilities. Grange Board Chairman Rob Chemaly told Golfer Pacific that this was a great outcome for Golf in Auckland and New Zealand.”Essentially both Courses are separated by a water way, with combined land of 100 hectares. It is likely that land sales would occur to fund the new course. Rateable land value is estimated at $100million. A number of course designer’s are in discussion including Jack Nicklaus Golf design. Royal Auckland spokesperson Craig Sheffield said that the merger was a sensible opportunity, a time to refresh and position the game for the next 50-60 years. It is forecasted that the new Super club will, have a combined membership of 2,500. Golfer Pacific understands there will be a membership differential in place until the new Super club determines income and expenditure. Mr Chemaly also commented that no staff would have forced redundancies as a result of the new combined club! When asked about a proposed new club name Mr Chemaly said that the “Royal warrant “ is being processed, with the proposed name” Royal Auckland and The Grange Golf club” for the new Superclub!

This was the first time New Zealand championships had been

At stake was not only the Asian title but also the opportunity for the leading boy to be granted an exemption into an Asian Tour event and the leading girl to gain a start in a Ladies European Tour event. THERE was a dramatic finish to Presidents Grade after the final round was held at Mcleans Island yesterday. There were four teams tied on 15 points going into the last round. After the final round, Waimairi Beach and McLeans Island were tied on 17 points and 58 individual games. The count-back based on the round robin match earlier in the season could still not decide a winners as they had a draw in that game. So a sudden death playoff was required (the first time in the history of Presidents grade we

Keith Yorston (pictured), a stalwart of Hawarden Golf Club, played at Russley Golf Course on Monday 23rd March. Playing with his son (Russley Golf Course Superintendent) Mike Yorston, and Hawarden Golf Club members, Erin Mulholland and Max Walker, he scored a hole in one on the number 6 hole. Then on Saturday 7th March it was Mike Yorston who scored a hole in one at Hawarden Golf Course playing with his father Keith again, strangely enough Mike’s hole in one was also on the 6th. Congratulations Keith and Mike on a rare feat.

pete in the Faldo Series Europe Grand Final. The New Zealand winners of Oscar Cadenhead (U21), Tadhg Campbell (U16), Dominic Brettkelly (U16), Momoka Kobori and Brooke Hamilton (U16 girls) spent the first two days in China acclimatizing to hot, humid conditions and adapting to the different grasses used on the internationally acclaimed Faldo course. Day one of the tournament will be remembered for the only ace of the event, scored by Brooke Hamilton on the 16th
holes, an island green considered one of the toughest par 3’s in the world. Brooke finished day 1 leading the girls U16 grade at level par. She followed this up on day two with another par round to enter the final round tied for the lead. Midway through the final round Brooke had established a small lead over her U16 rivals Japan’s Yumi Kudo and China’s Liu Yan but the last 3 holes saw her make small errors to card a final round of 77 leaving all three girls tied at five-over 221. In the final countback Brooke was placed third.
Momoka Kobori also acquitted herself well finishing 11th on the lengthy Faldo layout. In the boys championship Oscar Cadenhead was the strongest performer finishing 3rd in the U21 age grade, and tied 9th in the overall title championship. The boys championships were included both the US (Zachary Bauchou) and European (Simon Zach)Faldo series titles holders who featured strongly in the final results. However it was Japan’s Yuki Kamasu who prevailed in a playoff against Simon Zach to claim the boys title, the third Japanese player in the last 4 years to do so. Bauchou finished third. Tadhg Campbell and Dominc Brettkelly both had mixed fortunes finishing 13th and 19th respectively in their age grades. The experience for the players was enhanced by the opportunity to attend two coaching clinics with Sir Nick Faldo. The sessions focused not only on the skills required to execute shots but also on the imagination and experimentation that is part of being a true champion. The support of this years sponsors, Hellers, Express Cargo and Chambers PR was instrumental in creating this new opportunity for young new Zealand champions to test themselves against their internatonal counterparts. The Faldo Series Asia New Zealand Championship is set to return to Clearwater in January 2016. Based on the experience of this years champions the event is bound to be popular and strongly contested.

the final round but lost two shots coming home before his impressive finish.. However, his final-round performance was not enough to get the Otago under-19 team home and it finished second, five shots behind Canterbury. Otago started with an eight-shot lead but only Conor Jamison with a par 73 gave Logan good support while Canterbury’s Kilpatrick and former Waikato representative Matthew Morris bettered par. Canterbury made it a double as it led the under-16 team event from start to finish. Tasman was second and an improving Otago quintet finished third. Hiroki Miya (Canterbury) easily won the under-15 title while Momoka Kobori (Rangiora) blitzed the girls event with sub-par rounds of 68, 70 and 73. Kobori is on target to become one of New Zealand’s top women golfers, having also won the senior South Island title at St Clair in February.
