Debunking one of putting’s often quoted theories

I

DON’T often give golf lessons but on this occasion I will. First I must say that I am not a professional coach and consequently my charge will only be $150. Please forward the funds to my TAB account when you have finished reading this column. Oh by the way, this is a putting lesson. I am the world’s equal best putter along with yourself (nobody admits they can’t putt). When it comes to putting how many times have you heard the following words? — you’ve got to be up to be in. Obviously this statement is correct. A putt that falls short is never going to go in the hole. But let’s put all this into perspective. A putt that finishes past the hole will also not go in. It’s the same with a putt that finishes to the left or the right of the hole. None of those are going to go in either. In all cases it’s a missed putt. Nothing less, nothing more. It missed. Whether the ball finished short, long or to the side, the result is the same. It did not go in; nothing less, nothing more. But yet I have heard it a million times — you’ve got to be up to be in. And I reckon that’s the wrong advice.

The worst case scenario is in matchplay. You need to sink your putt to halve the hole. Before you start preparing for your putt there is firm reminder from your partner. “Don’t be short, give it a go,’’ your partner might say. Give it a go? I’m always giving it a go. Why should I suddenly hit it harder than I would normally. How many times have you seen someone hit the ball six feet past the hole because “they are giving it a go’’. Doesn’t hitting the ball at a speed that would send it six feet past the hole defy all the logic of putting. Surely your main aim is to make the putt as easy as possible. In most cases that is a putt that runs into the hole at a nice pace — not too slow, not too fast. A dribbly putt is going to exaggerate any break close to hole. A speedy putt will need to be deadly accurate because if it’s slightly left or right it will probably lip out. Of course some putts are easier than others. Without question the straight uphiller is the easiest. And the hardest, without question, is the across the break, especially on a fast green.

So what should we be thinking for a mustneed putt? In my opinion we should be thinking nothing different. We should be thinking how much will this break and how much speed is required. Nothing less, nothing more. How often have you seen someone leave a putt one inch short of the hole and exclaim: “If only I had hit it harder, it was right on line’’. But what about somebody who leaves their putt one inch past the hole. I bet you they have never said: “If only I had hit it softer, it was right on line.’’ In both cases the putts went close but not close enough. Nothing less, nothing more. They both missed. Don’t get me wrong. I understand the thinking of not being short for a must-make putt. But so often I see people knock the ball six feet past the hole and then remark: “At least I gave it a go’’. Wrong I say. Nothing should have changed other than be firm, take a little off the break. That’s all. Next month’s lesson: How to take relief when the opposition isn’t looking. And don’t forget that $150 to my TAB account. Just say it’s for Paul, they’ll know who you are referring to.

Daniel Pearce survives thriller at Muriwai A

UCKLAND professional Daniel Pearce survived a dramatic final day to win the $40,000 Muriwai Open in Auckland. Pearce kept his nerve to score a two under par 70 on the last day of the Charles Tour tournament, sponsored by Autex in association with ASB. That was enough for him to prevail by one shot but the challenges had come thick and fast. Manawatu amateur Joshua Munn scored a brilliant seven under 65 in his final round while Wellington professional Mark Brown had 66. That gave them the clubhouse lead at 15 under par while Pearce was still out on the course. Meanwhile, Pearce and Hawke’s Bay professional Doug Holloway were sharing the lead at 16 under par after 16 holes and Holloway went two shots clear after a birdie on No 17. The tournament looked Holloway’s after his drive on the 18th went down the middle but his approach found one of Muriwai’s pot bunkers. Adding to the drama, Pearce’s approach shot looked like it would go down off the back of the green but it held up in the rough. Holloway took two to get out of the bunker and ended up with a double bogey and fell back to 15 under par. Pearce was able to get up and down for victory which was his first on the Charles Tour. “I played solid out there, tried to do what I have been doing all week,’’ Pearce said afterwards. “I changed a few things since last week so it seems to be working quite nicely. I tried to keep plugging away all day. “I stumbled a bit on the back nine early but cruised home and didn’t really make any mistakes which was the key thing.” Pearce was aware of what was going on around him during the closing nine holes. “I had a few sneaky looks on the back

nine and actually thought I had to hole that putt on the 18th to tie the lead. “I was keeping a look, but Doug was there or thereabouts, ahead of me on the back nine so I was just trying to stick with him or catch him. “I’ve been putting well, but have missed a few short ones this week, but tried to stay nice and loose and just roll it (the last putt) in. “This is huge, it’s always tough to get your first victory at home and there are a lot of good golfers here this week with the likes of Foxy (Ryan Fox) and Brownie here, so it is awesome to get over the line. “It’s a massive relief too, I’ve put myself in position a lot of times before and haven’t quite got there. I’m just really pleased with how things are going and the progress that I’ve been making with my golf.’’ •••

Alanna Campbell gains deserved win in Muriwai Open

B

AY OF PLENTY golfer Alanna Campbell capped some great form with victory in the Muriwai Open in Auckland. Campbell, 16, had previously been the top qualifier for the New Zealand Amateur Championship at the Titirangi Golf Club in Auckland and went all the way to the final in which she was beaten by Julianne Alvarez from Wellington. A week later she was the runner-up in the Akarana Open in Auckland, won by Wenyung Keh. Campbell went into the final round of the Autex Muriwai Open with a four shot lead and hardly gave her rivals a look in. She posted a one under par 71 on the last day and ended up winning by six strokes. Campbell admitted to a restless night before the final round but was feeling confident by the time she was ready to tee off. “I didn’t get much sleep to be honest with you, but I wasn’t too bad, wasn’t too nervous on the first tee,” Campbell said after the win. Campbell reeled off pars on the opening seven holes and increased her lead with a birdie on the eighth hole. She bogeyed the 10th hole but that was her only blemish of the day. Her final eight holes resulted in seven pars and a birdie. Campbell said the win would take time to come to grips with. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet, but I’m so

pleased at the moment,’’ she said “I just stuck to my processes and just did what I have done the last few weeks. “My putting has helped me out so much this week. It started at Titirangi and it has just continued to be great these last couple of weeks. “I was steady all day, the last week I have just been avoiding mistakes really and trying to keep myself up there, so I’m very pleased.” While the winter break has come at the wrong time for Campbell with her game in such good form, she is looking forward to the break giving her an opportunity to work on her game. “Short term I just need to go home to work on my game, to see where I need to make improvements and go from there. “Longer term it will be good to come out at the New Zealand under 19s and the Carrus Open, win one of those, and just see where things go from there. I would love to make the Espirito Santos team for Mexico next year.” •••

Campbell’s US Open wins remains a highlight of NZ sport By Paul Gueorgieff

I

T was with mixed feelings that I greeted the news of Michael Campbell’s retirement from top level golf. Deep down I wanted Michael to come back to golf, sweep back to top form and pick up another couple of majors to add to the United States Open he won in 2005. Yes, I know, dreaming but we all like to dream. On the other hand I didn’t want to admit that Michael could no longer mix it with those playing on the world’s top golfing circuits, where the real money is. Michael would have wrestled with those same thoughts before announcing last month that it was probably time to declare an unplayable lie on his golfing career. Michael has been out of form for some years. He has been troubled by injury. He has had to endure a marriage divorce. But to me the over-riding factor in his retirement was the absence of the burning desire to play. The burning desire to win. The burning desire to beat the world’s best. Without that determination it’s just not going to happen — there are far too many great ball strikers around the world to contend with. “I have no complaints to walk away from the game that has given me such a wonderful life but it’s been a very hard decision,’’ Michael told Radio Sport.

PHOTO: BW MEDIA

“All of my friends who are the same age as me are still out there competing and doing well. It makes you wonder maybe

I should go back and play but right now I have got no motivation to play. “I have played golf for almost 40 years

and that is a long time. I have played professionally for 20 years and that is a long time.’’ Michael is aged 46 and maybe the desire might return when he becomes eligible for the senior tours, for over 50s. But for the meantime he was happy to spend more time with his teenage sons. “I have been an absent father since they were born and now I am spending more time at home. I am cooking their meals, dropping them to school,’’ he said. The highlight of Michael’s career was winning the US Open. On that occasion he finished with a sublime final nine holes to hold off no less than Tiger Woods at the prime of his career “Obviously 10 years ago was something special for me and for the country and for golf itself. I fulfilled one of my dreams to win a major and it was fantastic. But as everyone knows, it has been well documented, my career since then hasn’t been great. But if I walk away from the game right now I could be very proud of my achievements.” Michael’s former coach Mal Tongue summed up the win saying he had climbed one of golf’s Everests. It remains one of New Zealand sport’s great achievements. And despite all that I still want Michael to come back to golf, sweep back to top form and add a couple more majors to the one he won in 2005.

Charles Tour events prove important springboards By Paul Gueorgieff

I

AM sure many people have a total disregard for the Charles Tour, the main New Zealand circuit of tournaments for professional golfers and aspiring amateurs. I believe the mindset of many is that the fields for the Charles Tour events contain nothing but never-will-makeit professionals who have got nowhere else to play. But there has been a couple of results in the last couple of months that blow such thoughts out of the water. The first of them was the Lawnmaster Classic at the Manawatu Golf Club in Palmerston North in March. The winner was Michael Hendry of Auckland. He shot an amazing 23 under par for his four rounds. A flash in the pan? Hardly. Just a month later Hendry extended that form to win on the Japan Tour. The victory came in the Token Homemate Cup at the Token Tado Country Club in Nagoya and first prize was a very handsome $NZ284,000. The win also guaranteed him to remain on the Japan Tour until the end of the 2017 season. Very nice, thank you. The second example of a noteworthy result on the Charles Tour came in the Akarana Open in Auckland in April. The winner was Gareth Paddison of Wellington. Paddison was a model of consistency with four rounds of 66 to finish at 16 under par. A flash in the pan? Hardly. A month later he returned to the One Asia Tour and finished second in the Maekyung Open in Korea. Paddison picked up nearly $NZ86,000. A week later he banked $53,000 when third in another One Asia tournament in Korea. That was nearly $140,000 in a fortnight. Very nice, thank you. Those two results alone confirm the Charles Tour has an important role for New Zealand golfers. It’s not the PGA Tour in the United States. Never will

be and not meant to be. Paddison’s win at Akarana came in windy conditions which he handled with aplomb. “It was very tricky today,’’ Paddison said after the win. “The winds play havoc on your approach shots, drives and even your putts, especially with the greens quicker like they were today. “I was lucky as coming from Wellington and practicing a bit there makes it easier to play in these conditions. I hit the ball on the low side, so it did suit me, but I hit it great out there today, so I couldn’t complain about my ball striking. I was in control the whole way round.” Paddison also paid compliment to the Charles Tour. “These are great in the sense that it gives you four rounds of competition golf and you have to play really well round here to win one of these. “It’s a great stepping stone for teaching young amateurs and guys that haven’t had the taste of pro golf to see if they can test themselves and win one against guys like me who have been out here for 13 years.” The win was Paddison’s second on the Charles Tour and he has also won five times on the tier two level on the Australasian Tour and at the time felt like he was about to take the next step up. “I’m going to concentrate on the One Asia and Australasian Tours this year and I’m really determined on winning on the One Asia Tour or winning one of the big ones on the Australasian Tour. “I’ve been out here long enough and while you never get tired of winning the tier two type events you really want to win one of the million dollar events, which are the One Asian events or the tier one events in Aussie. “I feel like I’ve done my time and now is time to step up. It doesn’t feel like it’s too far away and winning in a week like this helps so much as well.”

Wenyung Keh’s second consecutive win on Charles Tour

W

ENYUNG KEH racked up her second successive win on the Charles Tour when running away with the Akarana Open in Auckland. The previous Charles Tour event had been the Lawnmaster Classic in Palmerston North which Keh won by four shots. But she made even shorter work of the Akarana Open to win by seven. Keh went into the final round at Akarana with a six-shot lead and never gave her rivals a look in with a one-over par 73 in her final round. Conditions on the final day were very difficult with high winds and 73 was the equal best score of the day. Second was Julianne Alvarez of Wellington while two shots further back in third was Alanna Campbell (Bay of Plenty). They had fought out the final of the New Zealand Amateur a week earlier. Keh said she was surprised by her

winning margin. “After round two I thought Alanna and Julianne were in great form coming into this week off the final of the New Zealand Amateur, but after that second round it just really put me ahead,’’ Keh said. “When I’m in front, and in the lead I don’t really think about the scores, I just try to play my own game and the conditions are the same for everyone. “I felt that I was struggling with my long game coming into this week, but I managed to keep my ball in play well. Keeping it simple too was very important. “The conditions today were much windier, the eight hole was so difficult and Julianne and Munchin got the water on that hole. I tried not to think about the others too much and it was good to hit the 14th hole in two and make eagle.” •••

National academy squads named THERE are four newcomers to New Zealand Golf’s national academy. They are James Beale, Alanna Campbell, Brooke Hamilton and Amelia Garvey. Beale has returned from the United States and has been added to the tier one group in the men’s division in the academy following a stellar 2014. Beale replaces Blair Riordan who has turned professional while those retaining their places in tier one are Joshua Munn, Tae Koh, Vaughan McCall and Luke Toomey. Tier two of the men’s division remains unchanged with Nick Coxon, Kadin Neho, Denzel Ieremia and Ryan Chisnall having all retained their places. In the women’s section Campbell, Hamilton and Garvey have been added to the tier two division while Chantelle Cassidy has been elevated to tier one alongside Julianne Alvarez and Wenyung Keh. Some of these players may also target a professional tour card towards the end of the year so the tier two group has been selected with the 2016 World Amateur Teams’ programme in mind.

The term of membership for this year’s programme is until December 18. As always there are players on the periphery of this group who will have narrowly missed out, so this six month academy term will allow for the possibility of those players to be introduced as other players move onto the next phase of their playing careers.

New Zealand third in Queen Sirikit Cup N

EW ZEALAND had the best score of the day in the final round of the Queen Sirikit Cup in Hong Kong to finish third overall in the Asia-Pacific event for women. The Kiwi team, which began the third and final round in eighth place of 13 teams, jumped five places at the Hong Kong Golf Club when it combined for three under par 141 total in the format where the best two scores out of three count. The New Zealand team comprised of Julianne Alvarez from Wellington and Auckland sisters Wenyung and Munchin Keh. The same three had represented New Zealand in the previous year’s Queen Sirikit Cup when they finished 10th. But with that experience under their belts a much better showing was the result, which delighted New Zealand Golf high performance manager Gregg Thorpe. “These three girls have worked really hard over the past 12 months and their strong finish reflects the impact a year of development and experience can have on performance,’’ Thorpe said. “This will give the girls a lot of confidence that their plans and processes are working and to keep at it.” Alvarez had the equal best score on the last day when shooting a three under 69. Munchin Keh had 72 and younger sister Wenyung 79 after

A walk in the park. Fifteen minutes from Auckland’s CBD and even closer from the Airport, Akarana off ers a challenging parkland golf experience for players of all abilities. Founded in 1927 the Club has a proud history and is generally regarded as the friendliest in town. At Akarana Golf Club ‘everyone is welcome’ - come for the golf, stay for the hospitality. The golf course itself has two distinct nines. The shorter inner nine loop with a par of 34 has one of the great holes in Auckland golf, the demanding par three 8th. The longer outer nine finishes with a short but exciting par 4 often watched and cheered on from the clubhouse deck. Visitors are invited to hone their skills against elevated greens, outstanding water features and numerous bunkers. Akarana is now firmly established as part of the New Zealand Charles Tour programme, endorsing its quality presentation and test of golf. Akarana looks forward to welcoming you soon. New Zealand Golf team manager Libby Steel said: “I’m extremely proud of the girls and how they conducted themselves this week. Tribute to Sir Thomas Gault N

EW ZEALAND GOLF sadly lost one of our greatest influences as our patron and a life member, The Right Honourable Sir Thomas Gault, He passed away late last month at the age of 76. Justice Gault had been a life member of New Zealand Golf for more than 20 years and we send many sympathies to his wife Barbara, son Ian, family and friends. Sir Tom leaves behind a legacy of excellence in both law and golf. He learned his golf at Paraparaumu Beach before combining his legal studies at Victoria University in Wellington with a lot of golf at Miramar and gained blues awards at both Victoria University and New Zealand University. At his best, he had a handicap of one. In 1971 he was the first captain of the fledgling Karori Golf Club. In 1977 he became involved with the New Zealand Golf council and was involved in various capacities through

outside Britain had been given the honour. It was a privilege that Gault later referred to as almost unbelievable to be put on such a pedestal, describing the way he was treated during that period as quite extraordinary.

until 1993. He served as president of the New Zealand Golf Association from 1987 to 1993 whereby he was subsequently made a life member and patron in the years that followed. Highlights in Gault’s time as president include winning the Eisenhower in 1992 and staging the event in New Zealand in 1990, along with taking immense pleasure in speaking at New Zealand’s first golfing centenaries at Otago, North Otago and Hutt Golf Club. The year 1993 saw another moment to remember when he was asked by Michael Bonallack to referee at the Open Championship at Royal St George’s, which he continued to do so for a further six years. Sir Tom was later elected to membership of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and to this day is the only New Zealander to serve as captain for the one year term, 2005 to 2006. In fact, when he was appointed, very few from

Justice Gault’s lasting footprint is also clearly seen across the legal profession. He was appointed a judge of the High Court of New Zealand in 1987. In 1991 he was appointed to the Court of Appeal of New Zealand where he served until the end of 2003. In 2004 he was appointed to the Supreme Court of New Zealand retiring in 2006. A stunning career of high achievement. I will fondly cherish the memories of the conversations I had with Sir Tom over the years. He never failed to impress and always made the effort to attend our events whenever he could. Not surprisingly, Sir Tom always managed to ask incredibly insightful and challenging questions. His wise words were always appreciated and now will be sadly missed.

A fantastic summer of golf W

ITH the PGA of New Zealand pro-am circuit now in its winter break until September, it’s a good time to reflect on an outstanding summer and autumn for tournament golf here, and for our players around the world. While the focus was naturally on the three New Zealand “majors” – the NZ Women’s Open, the Holden NZ PGA Championship and the BMW NZ Open – there was some extraordinary golf played throughout the circuit, which led to some equally stellar results for our travelling tour players. It started with the Volvik Whitford Pro-Am in January, featuring one of the strongest fields seen locally for an event of this type. The winner was Josh Geary, who also went on to win the Mondiale Omaha Beach Pro-Am, and who currently sits at the top of the Mondiale NZ PGA Order of Merit with a healthy lead. But then he backed up that form by winning the opening event on the PGA Tour of China, and is well placed to build on that and return to the Web.Com Tour in the United States next year. Runner-up at Whitford Park was Ryan Fox who won the Queensland PGA Championship in February with stunning back-to-back eagles on his final nine holes to head off Australian battler Michael Millar. This saw Ryan become the No 1 world ranked New Zealand player leading into the Holden NZ PGA Championship, where Millar got his revenge to achieve his first PGA Tour of Australasia victory after 16 years of trying.

Meanwhile Ryan has moved on to play the OneAsia Tour, picking up a handy $US64,000 for his joint runner-up finish in the Maekyung Open in Korea, alongside fellow Kiwi Gareth Paddison. After some years based in Australia, Paddison returned here to try and rebuild his fortunes, which he successfully re-launched with a clear cut victory in the Barfoot and Thompson Akarana Charles Tour event in Auckland. Four rounds of 66 under windy conditions left Paddison’s rivals with no answers. He was in the mix at Muriwai as well until fading in the last round. Michael Hendry has also been more in evidence here this year, although he would have been bitterly disappointed to miss the cut in the PGA Championship in March. He bounced back by winning the Lawnmaster tournament at Manawatu Golf Club later that month, and then lifted his career to a new level with his first victory in Japan in April, taking out the Token Homemate Cup and around $290,000 in prizemoney. He is well poised to attack the other lucrative events on that circuit later in the year. Other local winners so far in 2015 include Harry Bateman (winner of the 2014 Mondiale order of merit), Victor Janin, Kieran Muir, Daniel Pearce, Troy Ropiha and Peter Lee. On the evidence above, there is no reason why they can’t also shine on a bigger stage.

2 1

Of course, no review could leave out the contribution of Lydia Ko to the game’s profile. Her return and victory in the NZ Women’s Open drew the biggest crowds of the summer, and hardly a week goes by on the LPGA Tour without her name being in the headlines. You would have to be brave to bet against a win in a major (or more) for Lydia in 2015. Let’s also not forget our PGA Tour players: Danny Lee, Steven Alker and Tim Wilkinson. Danny in particular seems to have consolidated his place in and around the top 50 players on the tour, and can’t be far away from his first PGA title. Currently ranked 176 in the world, Danny would be the first choice New Zealander for the Rio Olympics if the team was picked today. Ryan Fox would also be in the field, which would create plenty of interest for local golf fans. In the meantime, there is the rest of 2015 to look forward to, and if you think all the hot scoring happens overseas, just reflect on this: Michael Hendry shot the best round of his career at the Warkworth Pro-Am in March – a 10 under par 62. It wasn’t good enough – Ryan Fox going two better with an amazing 12 under round of 60. As the PGA Tour ad says: these guys are good.

Resident Pro at Chisholm Park, Dunedin

How much golf have you watched lately? None? W

HAT are you doing on Sunday or Monday mornings? I know I used to enjoy my Sunday mornings with the Sky TV remote watching the PGA Tour in the United States. But to tell you the truth, I have only watched The Masters this year. Yes, I know I can watch it online through Coliseum Sports and see the coverage I used to enjoy. But I haven’t. Call me a traditionalist or old fashioned but I like my TV and Sky remote. I do understand the issues and why nearly all golf is online now. I am also aware of the relationship of the PGA Tour and how it is using New Zealand as its test market to see how the future of golf telecasts will take place and all the features that can be experienced. But are we ready for it? Even here in “Gigatown Dunedin” the uptake is growing slowly and we are rolling out the fastest internet speeds in the southern hemisphere. Gigapseed is so fast you will be able to download a full two hours of programming in less than a minute. In talking with other members of the golf industry, it is interesting to see what affect of the lack of golf on television is having on golf in this country. How are golfers learning about the latest and greatest new drivers? How does one hear about which golf ball is

best for them or what golfers are working on with their golf swings to take them to the next level? How do nongolfers get exposure to the game and get a taste of the excitement of major tournaments? Also, how are the golf companies marketing and telling their story to you? This is where the golf industry is having a difficult time. Retail sales in the golf industry are slower but is this because you are not seeing their advertising, promoting the features and benefits of their

latest products? I believe so. The products this year are a major improvement on last year’s, but do you know why? As I write this, Rory McIlroy won last weekend’s golf tournament by seven shots in what was a stunning display of golf - yet I never saw it and I doubt you did either. There is also less talk in the golf shops like “Wow, did you see that golf shot?” or “I can’t believe he made that putt.” Meanwhile, we have the internet and we can watch replays on PGA Tour.com of some of the top shots of the day but it really isn’t the same. These changes have come at what cost to the local golf market? The golf retail industry is already a very difficult market. However, where there is a challenge there is often an opportunity. The good golf retailers will now actually have to be more hands-on and work with you, the customer, a bit like the old days (in the 1980s) when there was no regular golf on television. Your local golf professional will now be able to work with you to get the right clubs in your hand or the right ball. You may even realise that you are not a tour professional or that it is not normal to hit an eight iron 160 yards. So, perhaps there may be a silver lining but I wonder if it is going to cost us a generation of new golfers? Now that is a story for another day.

New Head Pro at Chisholm Park BEING the head professional at Chisholm Park is like having a “new baby” for Allan Court. He has replaced Andrew Whiley, who finished up at the end of April after 12 years in the job. Court (50) started working alongside Whiley at the club last September, and was “as surprised as anyone” when Whiley announced he was leaving at the end of April. “I came here to work two years with Andrew, but having decided to leave when he did, it was a bit of a shock to the system,” Court said. “But that’s the way life is. It’s like golf – you’ve just got to play the next shot.” Court partly credits the time he had working at the club since September for his appointment as head professional. “I’m stoked. Absolutely stoked,” he said. “The club didn’t rush into their decision. I put my hand up for the job, I had good support among members, so I’m very fortunate. “Having that little time here that we did, gave me a chance to meet the members and win them over.” Court brings a wealth of golfing experience to one of the best links courses in the country. He did his apprenticeship at Shandon

ing nine holes. Court does not think the club needs to employ another professional, but there is a chance it will take on a trainee at some stage.

Stuart at Muriwai

Golf Club in Petone before working there as the head professional and leaving New Zealand in 1989. Before settling in Dunedin last year, he spent 14 years in China and 12 in Australia. He had 18 months as the golf programme director at Shanghai Singapore International School, and was a director of instruction at Tomson Golf Club in Shanghai, helping earn hosting rights for the BMW Championship from 2004 to 2008. He also has experience in developing quality players. New Zealand professional Mark Brown went through his academy at the Shandon Golf Club, while Australian professionals Ewan Porter and Scott Arnold went through his junior development programmes across the Tasman. Chisholm Park’s members had been

“really supportive” of Court’s appointment, something which fostered a sense of ownership, he said. “It’s like having a new baby. There’s feeling a bit of ownership and a bit of shaping. One of the reasons I got the job is I spent a bit of time with the members. I did a few coaching programmes. People saw that I have got quite a lot of enthusiasm for the game and they like that.” One of the first things Court opted to do in his new role was gut the pro shop and start over. A few walls have been knocked out and, as soon as next week, it will be a spacious area housing everything golfers need. He also plans to launch a junior clinic on Sunday mornings, where children can learn the game with a range of activities before hitting the putting green and play-

AS reported last month in Golfer Pacific, Mark Stuart is the new GM at Muriwai Golf club. He has replaced long serving GM Ray Barnett. A lifelong interest in Golf is Mark’s response. “ I have been playing Golf since aged 11 and a Golf tragic”. Unfortunately current form does not match this experience !! It is that interest in Golf that has seen Mark appointed for several years in Golf Governance and management. Mark told Golfer Pacific that he had 6 years on the board of Howick Golf club, 4 years as Chairman. Then followed a stint for 2 and half years as the GM at The Grange. “I see Muriwai as an under-utilised gem... a truly great links course that just keeps getting better and better,” he said. A prime focus for the Club is getting more members and visitors to join and play, and encouraging under 35’s to participate. Mark’s interests outside golf include rugby, league, cricket, and socialising with friends.

Little wonder the club, located just 15 minutes from famous Hastings Street at Noosa, has bucked the trend with membership up 12 per cent and social play grown by around four per cent this year. The picturesque championship golf course has stood the test of time (79 years) and like a good wine, gets better with age. It seems golfers do vote with their feet as more than 50,000 rounds are played by members and a further 15,000 rounds by visitors each year. One of the reasons why Noosa Golf Club is popular with locals and visitors alike is because it’s an easy walking and

cool and creative hinterland villages of Maleny, Montville and Mapleton. Any destination you choose for your Sunshine Coast holiday will fill your body, mind and soul with an enduring sense of warmth. And the Golf is great too! So take your clubs and escape the Winter Blues.

a forgiving golf course – the par rating for men is 72 and ladies 74 with a slope rating of 126. The fairways are generous with a first cut, followed by a maintained rough so not too many golf balls are lost. Still the course is no pushover and can be a challenge to golfers of all levels. The true and fast greens are a reasonable size and a good target. Golfers can enjoy the tranquillity of the course’s natural bushland setting where friendly kangaroos roam freely. There are even koalas and an abundance of birdlife on the golf course. After playing 18, the perfect place for relaxing with friends is at the comfortable clubhouse. The 19th hole offers a fine bistro and relaxing deck to take in the superb view over the ninth and 18th holes. The bistro is open seven days a week for lunch and golfers can also enjoy dinner Tuesdays to Fridays. The pro shop is one of the biggest and best on the Sunshine Coast and boasts a comprehensive range of equipment, clothing, accessories and hire clubs. WHANGAREI BOYS’ MAKE IT FIVE IN A ROW IT was overcast conditions with the odd shower thrown in throughout the day that greeted players at Whangarei Golf Club for the annual ASB National Secondary School Qualifier, played last month. A small field of eighteen students from seven different schools took part. Scoring, in the main, was relatively good with close contests for both the individual titles up for grabs. Brooke Kingi (Whangaroa College) won the girls competition with a score of 80 (+7), one stroke better than Soktaera Sean (Whangarei Girls) who was

followed by sister Soktaerodh (Whangarei Girls) on 82 in third place and Belinda May (Kamo High) with 83 in fourth position. The boys division finished with three players tied for the lead on 74 (+2) at the end of regulation play and two others on 75. A sudden death playoff between Christian Nitsche, Julian Fowler and Daniel Millett (all Whangarei Boys’) required just one trip up the 18thwith Nitsche making par to win the title. In the teams competition the anticipated challenge of the Whangarei Girls’ team never materialised as the Whangarei Boys’ team ran out clear winners for a fifth straight year. Their team score of 222 had them 19 strokes ahead of the combined Whangaroa College/Kamo High School team in second on 241 and Whangarei Girls’ rounded out the top three on 243. Team Gross Scores: 222 – Whangarei Boys High 1 (Julian Fowler, Christian Nitsche, Daniel Millett, Ben Bowmar) 241 – Whangaroa College/Kamo High (Brooke Kingi, Matt Pene, Belinda May) 243 – Whangarei Girls High (Shanice Croft, Soktaera Sean, Soktaerodh Sean, Taylor Wyatt-Logan) 285 – Whangarei Boys High 2 (Steven Lang, Ben Croucher, Christopher Shepherd, Tyler Parkinson) 280 – Rodney College/Tauraroa Area School (Jamie Thomas, Taimana Ngakuru, Danielle Ngakuru) Special thanks again to the Northland Eagles Society for their help with starting, the prizes and organising lunch for the players.

ly statement at the season’s first Northland men’s golf trial played early last month, notching up an emphatic seven shot win in the City of Whangarei Classic at Sherwood Park The 20 year-old lefty from Parua Bay went wire to wire for the win. His opening round of four under par 66 included a closing stretch of birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie on holes six through nine. Four strokes back in second place were Julian Fowler (Northland) and Alex Neely (Kerikeri) on even par (70). Brown again looked to be cruising in the afternoon’s second round, two under through 15 holes before an untimely double bogey at the 16th and bogey at 18 brought him back to the field. Northland junior representative Julian Fowler played the back nine in five under to post a second round score of 67 and draw level with Brown at three under par. In third place was Neely who carded a second straight even par 70 to sit just three back from the lead. There were no signs of nerves however for the big hitting left hander on Sunday who opened his final round by driving the green at the 301m par four first to set up an easy birdie. With that came the outright lead, one that he would not relinquish as his nearest challengers faded and were unable to catch him. “I felt I stuck to my plan really well, my misses were in good spots and my chipping and putting was really good all weekend” Brown said. The performance was made even more important for Brown who is due to spend time on the side-line in the coming months with impending wrist surgery to remove a troublesome cyst that has hindered the amount he has been able to practice and play recently.

GOLF TRAILS with Auckland saw the Auckland v Northland Challenge Trophy being put on the line. Both teams finished with three wins each to share the trophy and collect a further six points each to add to their overall tally. Day two had Northland up against Waikato who were coming off two big wins (10-2 in both matches) and needing a decent sized winning margin to catch them. The team responded to the pressure admirably and used their local knowledge of the challenging Mangawhai layout to win four matches and halve another (the sixth match also went to the final hole). The nine points won left the two sides tied on 23 points each with Northland being declared the winner on countback due to the result (9-3) between the two sides. The team are to be commended for their attitude and team spirit throughout, there support for one and other no doubt helping them gain their first win at the event since 2010. Only two players went through the event with a perfect three from three win record, they were Waikato number three Zoann Huang and Northland number four Belinday May.

SLICK MANGAWHAI GREENS TEST ELITE GOLFERS WIDELY recognized as one of New Zealand’s very best courses, Mangawhai was in exceptional condition for the Tom Bonnngton Trophy event played over the weekend of 16 & 17 May. Renowned for the quality of its greens, the course was immaculate in every respect. Even the weather played a positive part, with the predicted stormy rain keeping its distance and allowing play to progress without undue outside interference. For the first time in “The Bonnington” history, an Elite Women’s division was held and played host to an outstanding field of golfers from across Northland, North Harbour and Auckland associations. In the words of Tournament Director Stewart Speed, this was “... an amazing success. A truly outstanding field of very talented women golfers who enjoyed every challenge this great course threw at them.”. The men’s White Tee division teed off first on Saturday and, as with the women, attracted a strong field of local and visiting golfers. The wind put a few to the sword as it was at its strongest at this time, and the slick greens place great demand on precision through all approach shots. Once the men’s field was under way, the

Women’s groups took to the tee, playing from the standard Men’s White Tees. With handicaps as low as +4, this was a line-up possibly stronger than ever seen at a Women’s event at Mangawhai. Some had not played the course before and were somewhat apprehensive, having heard many tales of how Mangawhai is a relentless challenge (“unbeatable” is a widely-used description) for all aspects of the game. Scores on day one, across both divisions, indicated that the course wasn’t there just for the taking. Men’s Club Captain Ray Crawshaw grittily clawed his way to the head of the field (with a 1-shot lead over Trevor Bush of the Northland club), while Kylie Jacoby (Waipu) made her intentions clear by taking a 1-shot lead over Bohyun Park (Gulf Harbour). Both divisions were tightly bunched behind the leaders and Sunday promised great competition for the important titles at stake. The pace of the greens had troubled many in the field, but there were no complaints as to the quality of the surfaces – simply, these are greens that present the highest level of tournament competition. Sunday morning loomed with ominous grey skies over the Bryndewyns to the north but these soon dissipated and the final day commenced in very good conditions. The draws had been seeded from first round results and there was a clear determination amongst all players to improve on the previous day’s efforts. A good crowd of spectators took to the course, lending encouragement to all players and enjoying the precision of play. After 9 holes there was little change on the leaderboards and focused expressions were very much in evidence as groups moved onto their final 9 holes. In the women’s group, Ela Grimwood was playing a strong round to put some pressure on Kylie and Bohyun, while Robbie Newman was starting the charge that would take him to eventual victory in the Men’s event. Play continued at a good pace throughout the day (despite one player calling it off after losing all the balls in his bag) and results were completed in time for prize giving at 3.30pm. Sponsor Mike McGarry of Mangawhai’s A1 Coastal First National Real Estate was on hand to present prizes and spoke of his pleasure in being part of such a well-run and popular event. He especially welcomed the advent of the Women’s division and looked forward to ongoing participation in the Tom Bonnington Cup and Trophy tournaments. Stewart Speed and his organizing com-

mittee did an outstanding job in coordinating every aspect of the event and John Donnelly and his greens team are to be congratulated for showcasing Mangawhai in all its “unbeatable” glory. Special thanks are due to Mike McGarry and First National Real Estate for their enthusiastic support of what is quickly becoming an iconic golfing event in the upper North Island. The Tom Bonnngton Cup, for Elite Men, will be staged later this year at Mangawhai and already the organizing group has planning well under way. Thanks to all who volunteered help, to Lisa and her excellent catering, and to those who supported the event in so many positive ways. PENNANTS – NORTHLAND CLAIM CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE TEAMS from Mangawhai and Northland Golf Clubs contested the final of the Championship Pennant competition at Bay of Islands Kerikeri Golf Club on Sunday 24 May 2015. The teams in playing order: Northland (Julian Fowler, Iain Power, Gary Whimp, Michael Macdonald) Mangawhai (Scott Wightman, Lee Newman, Gene Wintle, Alan Madigan)/ Recent rain made the course heavy underfoot and the blustery south-westerly made conditions testing for the players. The two round robin matches between the sides were both evenly contested with Mangawhai going in as slight favourites having claimed a narrow win and a draw earlier in the season. In the morning reverse singles Northland got their noses in front with a 2.5 to 1.5 lead after wins to Power, Macdonald and a half to Fowler with Madigan (win) and Newman (half) grabbing the points for Mangawhai. The afternoon saw the first two matches between the 3’s and 4’s all over by the 13th hole; the matches being split one each way meant it was left to the numbers 1 and 2 to battle it out for the title. Holding the smallest of advantage through 14 holes, the Northlanders held their nerve and finished the stronger of the two sides. By the end of the 16th both Northland players held a dormie up lead, a decisive margin that Mangawhai could not overcome, at which point the match was conceded. Congratulations to the Northland team

CLUB finals day, played last month, lived up to its reputation with superb finals in all Divisions on a magnificently presented course at Pukekohe. No doubt the celebrations would have gone long into the night at Whitford Park as they celebrated their first ever win in the prestigous James Bissett Shield. Akarana presented a strong challenge with 3 current or former Northland representative players in their team but it was the Whitford Park team who finished the stronger. Akarana had their nose in front early with Whitford Park pegging them back to be on equal terms with nine holes to play. However, Whitford asserted ascendency in the back nine to run home winners by six matches to two. In the Presidents final, Pakuranga won a tight contest by 5 matches to 3 over Titirangi; they too turning around a half way deficit. Pakuranga will return to Bissett Shield for the first time since 2007. Celebrations too would have gone on at Clarks Beach as they celebrated their first ever Pennant final win and will be promoted to Presidents grade in 2016. They won a close contest with The Grange after The Grange looked to be taking out the title with nine holes to play. The Captains final was won by Titirangi over a courageous Onewhero by 5.5 matches to 2.5. In the Vice Captains final Akarana won a close contest over Remuera with the outcome decided in four matches on the 18th hole. The Inter Club finals were hosted by Royal Auckland. In Inter Club Division I, The Grange defended their title by defeating Titirangi 5 matches to 3. It was closer in the Division II final with Chamberlain Park and Remuera tied at four all after the regulation 18 holes. The tie was broken on the second play off hole with Remuera running out the winners.

The Club are very happy to report that thanks to the generosity of sponsors and participants together with the proceeds from the raffle and a very successful auction over $10000.00 was raised which will go towards maintenance programme. This wonderful result could not have been achieved without the contribution of their members either as hole sponsors, prize donors and entrants on the day and they would again like to thank you all for your support of this event. PS Sadly no one scored a hole in one that would have taken out the 2015 Subaru Outback valued at $49900 or the Club Car Golf Cart valued at $10000 on Hole 8.

WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP PENNANT WINNERS

WAIKATO

HUANG BECOMES NATIONAL CHAMPION ZOE Huang has been chasing the Junior Tiger National Title for 3 years. The 14 year old from Waikato (Hamilton Golf Club) has finally claimed victory in the national event with a one over par round at the Manawatu Golf Club. Zoe was 5 shots clear of her nearest competitor. She is extremely happy with the win commenting “Me and my dad have been working towards the goal of winning this title”.

THE final round of the Waikato Women’s Championship Pennants recently has been completed and the winners for the three divisions have been found. The Division One Champions were Riverside 1 (pictured) who went though the season unbeaten. 4 wins and 1 draw gave them a total of 9 match points and 20.5 game points. Putting them one match point ahead of runners up Ngaruawahia 1 who had 7 match points and 17.5 game points. Going into the final round at Ngaruawahia it was uncertain who would take out the division 1 competition as there was

only 1 game point between Ngaruawahia and Riverside. Ngaruawahia needed to beat Hamilton in the final round to have a chance of taking the division 1 title. Hamilton led the morning round after a foursomes win from Zoe Huang & Tessa McDonald over Debbie Wells & Phyliss McNie (Ngaruawahia). Hamilton’s other pairing of Erica Amon & Helen Green would halve their match against the home team of Robyn Pellow & Hinemoa Pohatu, to give Hamilton a 1.5-0.5 lead in the morning. After Hinemoa Pohatu won her singles match it was looking like the match could go either way. However wins from Erica Amon (Hamilton) over Phyllis McNie, Tessa McDonald (Hamilton) over Debbie Wells and Zoe Huang (Hamilton) over Robyn Pellow would end Ngaruawahia’s chances of a division one title for 2015. Riverside 1 would beat Pio Pio/ Waitomo 3.5-2.5 and secure the title for 2015. Congratulations to Riverside!

The Division Two champions were: Te Awamutu, also going through unbeaten posting 3 wins and 2 draws. Their total of 8 match points and 23.5 game points beat their nearest competitor Riverside #2 who had 7 match points and 21 game points. Te Awamutu claimed victory in the Division 2 competition with a resounding win over Ngahinepouri in the last round. Wins from Sylvia Gooch, Kelly Nicholas, & Jill Morgan, combined with the half from Ani Bahler would secure the 5.5-0.5 win and the 2015 Division 2 title. Congratulations Te Awamutu. The Division Three winners are Walton. Walton went through the 2015 season unbeaten posting 4 wins and a draw. A total of 9 match points and 18.5 game points was enough to hold out runners up Matamata #2 with 8 match points and 20 game points. Matamata would have been hoping that Hamilton would come through and beat Walton in the last round, and it looked like a possibility. After Walton started strong in the morning they went 2-0 up. But Hamilton’s Marian Kingham and Chrissie Courtman both posted wins to level things up. After Ann Needham beat Jean McDermid, it would come down to the last match, in which Hamilton needed Lois Jones to beat Deb Ring (Walton). Their match ended in a half. End result Walton 3.5 Hamilton #3 2.5. Matamata trounced Riverside #3 6-0 to finish second overall.

The 5-3 afternoon victory for Waitomo combined with the 3-1 lead from the morning totaled 8-4 in Waitomo’s Favor. The Tolich Trophy match up was Pirongia Vs Hauraki. It was the Hauraki team who had the best start with a convincing 4-0 lead at lunch. TURANGI LADIES WIN LADIES from the Turangi Golf Club recently won the Bay of Plenty Thames Valley Srixon Ladies Team event. Congratulations to the team of K Doyle, J McCarthy, J Paranihi and K Siddells, winning in a field of 84 players in the tournament held at Turangi Golf Course.

ROTORUA BOYS TRIUMPH AT MANIHERA MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT ROTORUA BOYS HIGH were 1st and 2nd at the J.I. Manihera Memorial Tournament which was played last month at Kawerau Golf Club. The course was in fantastic condition as always with a tricky back left pin causing all sorts of bother on 18! The winning team of Keanau Howe (38), Tini Hawea (35) and Tiemi James Ngaronga (38) posted a 111 stableford point total to win by 9 over their schoolmates Yusuke Niwa, John Hewson and Rahiri Murray. In the individual stakes NZ Rep Alanna Campbell from Aquinas College continued her recent form posting a 3 under 69 which would have been a ladies course record had there not been placing. Topping it off with a 6 foot downhill cross slope birdie putt that travelled about 8 foot sideways to find the cup despite the gathering crowd in the clubrooms thinking she was going to 3 jab it! Tauranga Boys College player Mitchell White who was a late call up topped the stableford scoring with 40 points.

GOLF TRAILS teams winning 4 of the 5 black flags up for grabs. They were fortunate that 2015 was their rostered turn to host the finals but no-one could deny that their teams got there on merit and then did the business on the day. The course preparation matched those of their teams and although the hosts took most of the winnings it was a great finals day played in perfect conditions. In the Championship division Omanu went through the round robin undefeated with the team manager Ron Sisson always fronting with a well prepared squad. They were 13.5 points ahead of their rivals and neighbours Mt.Maunganui and after leading 2-1 in the foursomes never let go of the early advantage with first 15 year old Shaun Campbell winning on the 16th and Paul Crone on the 17th. Mark Kiwi was dormie on Brent Curnow and Omanu captain Jordan Golding, after losing the first against Bailey Smith to a birdie, soon gained control. With the rubber decided several matches were not completed with only Matty Blackbourn and Mark Hughes gaining advantage in the singles for the Mount. The Silver ladies were a much closer affair and the only match that went to the wire. Tauranga with a 15 yr old and two 16 yr olds in their team put up a brave show against the local ladies but a superb deuce on the 17th by Aroha Tito all but sealed it before Karen Iles gained a half off Wendy Hanna on the 18th to complete the victory. Opotiki were by far the strongest Senior division team in the Eastern Bay but came up against it as the depth in the Bay’s biggest club also carried over to strength of players and the lightning greens made the task that much harder for the visitors with only Sam Howe securing a win in the singles. The Intermediate men were expected to have the hardest battle to take the honours against Tauranga but after getting home 3zip in the foursomes Omanu could afford the luxury of their 6 &5 both losing as Gary Brown and Mark Coysh got the two wins needed to secure the Black flag. In the Junior division Ohope were up

against another Eastern Bay team in Kawerau and after being down 2-1 in the foursomes managed to win 5 of the 6 singles matches to claim victory.

TARANAKI MEN’S HANDICAP PENNANT FINAL 2015 ELTHAM defeated Manaia 5-4 to claim the Men’s Handicap Pennant for 2015. Played early last month, the two teams met at Te Ngutu golf club and fought out a closely fought contest with the Central Taranaki side just coming out on top. Eltham took a 2-1 lead in the morning foursomes, but Manaia fought their way back in to contention winning two of the first three afternoon singles to tie the match up at 3-3. A comfortable 5/4 win for the Eltham no1 and team captain Jaren Otene edged Eltham back in front, but Manaia’s Andrew Gibson levelled it up again with a 4/2 victory playing a no3. Despite clawing his way back from being 5 down to only 2 down, Manaia’s Michael Sharp eventually went down 3/1 to Paul Hawkes to give Eltham their second title in the Men’s Handicap Pennant. Credit should go to both sets of players for the spirit in which the match was played, and to the host club Te Ngutu for presenting their course in an outstanding fashion. MIXED SENIOR’S GOLF TOURNAMENT AT MANUKORIHI MANUKORIHI GOLF CLUB held their 29th Annual Mixed Senior’s Golf Tournament on Monday 27th April to Friday 2nd May. Cancelling the first round due to the flooding of greens did not dampen the enthusiasm of Mixed seniors Golf Tour-

nament. Three 3 full sections of 16 pairs played. The highlight of the week occurred during the morning 9-hole round on the Tuesday when three of the four players who were local had to play 7 extra holes to find a winner. They were Jack Campbell (Waipu) and Marie Van Praagh (Waitara) who beat Hugh Taylor (Manukorihi) and Shirley McClutchie (Urenui). In addition during the last round on the Friday three matches were tied after 18 holes and had to revert to a chip-off to decide the winners. We use a chip-off so that the presentation is not delayed from extra holes being played. Throughout the country there is still a drop off in Clubs who wish to run these tournaments due to the lack of interest by members who are prepared to do the organising. Of the 96 players, Manukorihi provided 25 of them, Waitara 6, Westown 6 and Urenui 11 The field covered entries from Sherwood Park and Waipu in Whangarei to entries from Mahunga, Kapiti, Castlepoint and Paraparaumu in the Wellington region as well as 6 and 8 respectively from the Bay of Plenty and Manawatu/Wanganui regions. The main results were; Group A (the lowest handicaps); Garry and Sandra Payne (Apiti) won with 4 wins, Kevin Southee and Renette Scholtz (Manukorihi), Jerry and Julia Kuggeleijn (Waiuku), Mike Letterman (Urenui) and Joy East (Manukorihi), Lou Ramsdale and Helen Beaurepaire (both Urenui) all had three wins. In Group B; Jack Campbell (Waipu) and Maree Van Praagh(Waitara) won with 4 wins, David and Carole Bolton (Westown), Ted Danych (Manukorihi) and Pam Pasma (Sherwood Park), Hugh Taylor (Manukorihi) and Shirley McClutchie (Urenui), Mike and Karen Leyden (Waitemata) all had 3 wins. From Group C; Ray and Elsa Bygrave (Otumoetai) won with 4 wins, John and Heather Houston (Waihi), Carl Beale (Manukorihi) and Sherry Miller (Foxton), Bill and Dorothy Hancock (Omanu), Colin Wheeler (Stratford) and Jocelyn Pretty (Manukorihi) all had 3 wins. It may be of interest that the Men’s average index last year was 20.5 now 19.6 giving a Manukorihi handicap that was 20 now 19 and the Women’s average index last year was 21.6 now 22.6 giving a Manukorihi handicap still of 22 which shows that the men have got slightly better while the women have stayed the same as last year. Of possible further interest is that there were 30 two’s last year but only 16 this year.

The event acknowledges the support by sponsors, namely; Methanex, Waitara Town & Country Club, Harcourt’s Waitara, New World Supermarket, Waitara, Raleigh Restaurant, Waitara Services and Citizens Club, Fitzroy Engineering Group, New Plymouth Top 10 Holiday Park and the Intergroup (were Transpacific Liquid Solutions). Organisers were very appreciative in having Q Transport, Waitara provide the container for overnight storage of gear. Without this continuing support the tournament may not be viable, as the entry fee would have to be substantially increased. This year Methanex provided binoculars, camp stools, cooler bags and umbrellas, which we used as prizes for a three-draw raffle. The winners were Iva Sarten, Rodney Crawford both of Manukorihi Gol Club.

The event organisers already have dates for 2016. Next year, based on numbers reverting to the 4 sections, as the tournament will be held from Monday 25th April through Friday 29th April. The Monday starting time will be noon. 

HAWKE’S BAY/POVERTY BAY

NATIONAL TEAMS DISTRICT FINAL – MARAENUI WIN AGAIN! THE women’s annual National Teams District Final was held at Hawkes Bay Golf Club in May. In Stunning Autumn conditions, 16 teams of 4 from all over Hawkes Bay and Poverty Bay took part in this competition, which is a four ball best ball net in pairs. Yes, a complicated format, and completion of the team score cards seemed to prove almost as challenging as the golf!

Maraenui’s team of Grace Pritchard, Adele Leppien, Kathleen O’Mahoney, and Margaret Leathley were the winners with an aggregate net score of 134, narrowly defeating Hawkes Bay who came in with 135. Maraenui also won last year’s competition, so are proving a force to be reckoned with in this format. Maraenui’s net differential score of -13.4 (4 ball net scores for each pair compared with the course’s NZSCR) will go forward to NZ Golf’s national competition, the winning team being that with the best net differential. The ‘basket raffle’, whereby each club contributes a basket filled with goodies to be raffled on the day, raised over $2,000 which will go towards our representative teams’ travel costs. A huge thanks to all the clubs for contributing so generously to this fundraising effort.

Playing his first event, Hodge finished with a 2 round total of 8 under to finish 3rd overall.. The local association and all the golf industry wish Tyler all the very best as a professional player, and thank him for his commitment to Manawatu Wanganui teams as an Amateur, which included being a team member in the winning Toro Interprovincial team in 2013.

MANAWATU RETAIN A GRADE PENNANT MANAWATU GOLF CLUB retained the A Grade pennant by winning their final match against Wanganui 9.5 – 2.5 at Taihape on Sunday May 10. PAUL COOKSLEY and Mary Howard (pictured) are the Winners of the 2015 Par 3 competition held in earlier this year. Paul won the Men’s with a magnificent 62 (Paul Minnoch scored his card), just ahead of Roy Robinson with 64 and Steve McBride on 65. Mary had an even more commanding win, her 65 being well ahead of 2nd place Sharon Menzies 72. Kapiti Golf Club would like to thank the Green Staff for all the work on the course, Jenny and Erina in the kitchen, and club captains Paul Cooksley and Carole Clout for their organisation. Also a big thank you to the 90 odd golfers who supported the day. While Summer is well and truly over, one of the warmest summers ever it has brought some unique challenges to our Course staff. In late January one of our new Water Tanks split in the heat, losing us 31,000 litres of water. And our Course staff were having problems rigging the tank up to the tractor to pull it up the hill. In the end Steve McBride (pictured) had enough of the waiting and pushed it up the hill!

KAIAPOI-KAIKOURA CUP KINGS OF PLAY-OFFS

MANOR PARK’S DANIEL HILLIER SELECTED FOR NZ JUNIOR REP TEAM NEW ZEALAND GOLF announced last month NZ junior representative players to compete in the Toyota World Junior Golf Team Championship to be held in Toyota City, Japan, later this month the 15th-16th June.

IN cool, calm conditions at Amberley on Sunday 17th of May the Kaiapoi A team of (from left) Jackson Joseph, Rodney Downes, Ryan Adams and Austin Hamilton made it back to back Kaikoura Cup titles for the club but had to endure two play-offs before taking out the Canterbury North Interclub Title. In their semi final match against Amberley they were locked together at the end of 18 holes and won at the first play-off hole with Ryan Adams hitting his second shot to within 8 feet to seal the win. In the afternoon they again found themselves in the same predicament at the end of their Final with Pegasus 1, who were unbeaten in the competition. With Pegasus in a strong position, being ahead in three matches with five holes to play, Kaiapoi finished strongly to square the match at the 18th and again head down No.1 for the play-off, with light fading. Adams was again the man of the moment sinking a 12 foot putt for par to seal victory for his Kaiapoi team and supporters and make it back to back Kaikoura Cup titles.

Scott Nevill (23) has been superintendent of the Dunstan course since completing his apprenticeship at the Wanaka Golf Club three years ago. Modest about the accolade, he says the award was ”a bit of a surprise” but a good achievement for the club. “I’m the only person who is paid to look after the course but I don’t do it alone. It would be a hell of a push, especially in spring and summer when it’s really busy. There’s a whole team of volunteers who help me out,” he said yesterday. “It’s been a long, hard three years, working up to this point, but there’s always

Mr Nevill, who grew up in Clyde, said it was a privilege to work on the Dunstan course for his first job in turf management. Describing himself as “not really a golfer” he declined to reveal his golf handicap. “Don’t ask... I just have a social bat every now and again. FRANKTON COURSE UPGRADE COMPLETE BY: MOUNTAIN SCENE NEWS

QUEENSTOWN’S Frankton Golf Centre celebrated both the past and the future at an open day held on Sunday 17th May. The future involves the grand opening of a short-game practice area and two renovated holes. But the open day was also timed to celebrate the centenary of the original Wakatipu Golf Club. The club, now the Queenstown Golf Club, set up in May 1915 with an 18-hole course near the Frankton lakefront. The current Frankton course opened in 1958 and was taken over by the Queens-

town council three years ago. To mark the double celebration there’ was a putting competition, free use of the driving range, coaching tips, Pro Shop specials and prizes up for grabs in a hole-inone pontoon. Golfers were also able to play a nine-hole three-person ambrose tournament or played an 18-hole competition at the Queenstown Golf Club’s Kelvin Heights course.
