US Open should have come with censor’s warning

W

e don’t get to see a lot of live golf on television these days. But when we did last month they forgot to attach the appropriate censorship warning. I don’t know if golf normally has any kind of censorship rating and, if it did, I presume it would a rating of G, for general viewing. But last month’s US Open at Chambers Bay in Washington should have carried an R50 rating – restricted to viewers with a handicap of 50 or more. Some of the content was too graphic for a golfer with a handicap of less than 50. For starters the freefall of Tiger Woods, perhaps one of the greatest to play the game, gained momentum. Tiger had rounds of 80 and 76 for the worst 36-hole total of his professional career. Playing partner Rickie Fowler, who the previous month had won the $US10 million Players’ Championship, was not much better with 81 and 73. If that wasn’t horrific enough there was worse. The grass was brown. Viewers, no doubt, were having to look away. They should

have been warned that some of the pictures may be disturbing. When we used to get golf on the telly regularly what we often saw was beautifully manicured fairways and pristine greens. And the grass was green, dark green. But I think we had been spoiled – and maybe the players too. I will be the first to agree that the greens at Chambers Bay were patchy but I enjoyed the hilly course with its undulating fairways, a myriad of bunkers and all nestled next to some idyllic bays and a rail track running right alongside one of the holes. The greens were not the usual dartboards where players could take direct aim at the pin and the ball would stick. Instead they had to improvise. Run the ball off a bank, around a slope. The golf ball was like a marble on the top of a table with a wonky leg. In fact it was no different to many of the golf courses in Scotland where British Opens are held. In fact it was a great precursor to St Andrews where this month’s British Open

will be held. And despite the grass only being brown, the US Open was pure theatre. There was the medical drama of Jason Day who collapsed during the third round with a bout of vertigo. In an effort to avoid a repeat on the final day, the Queenslander raised his yardage book to eye level to read it. Each time he put a tee in the ground or picked the ball out of the hole, he did so gingerly. We all feared another collapse. Then there was the drama of the last few holes. Justin Johnson had a 12-foot put on the last to win. Even a two-putt would be enough for an 18-hole playoff the following day on his 31st birthday. The first putt missed but so did his return putt from about four feet which left Jordan Spieth with victory. There was plenty of criticism about the greens but Spieth was one of those to get over them. Afterwards he acknowledged the greens were not the best but he just tried to do his best. His best was pretty good.

Geary puts himself in line for a return to the US N ew Zealand golfer Josh Geary has all but booked his ticket for a return to the United States for the 2016 golfing season. Geary has this year won twice on the PGA Tour of China and because of that he now has a significant golfing carrot being dangled in front of him. The top five on the China Tour’s order of merit gain conditional status to the 2016 Web.com Tour, which is the second biggest golf circuit in the US. Geary’s two wins in China mean he is a clear leader of the order of merit and he will be making every effort to ensure he doesn’t drop out of the top five before the year’s end. Geary has played on the Web.com Tour previously but on a limited basis and with limited success. His first win on the China Tour this year came in the Buick Open at Mission Hills in April and he repeated the dose in the Lanhai Open in Shanghai the following month. On both occasions the runnerup was J H Wang who is second on the order of merit with earnings of 259,200 yuan, which is about $NZ60,000. Geary has earnings of 473,827 yuan ($NZ109,000). The Lanhai Open provided a dramatic finish. Geary had a one shot lead over Wang going to the 72nd hole but lost the upper hand when he put his drive into the rough. Geary was forced to lay up

with his second shot and put his third to within nine feet. Meanwhile Wang, playing with Geary, had reached the par four 18th green for two but sent his birdie attempt four feet past the hole. Geary missed his putt to save par and the big crowd readied itself for a playoff until Wang missed his return four-footer which handed Geary victory. Said Wang: “I thought it was right edge, but it went straight right. I was not putting well today. Not today and not in the second round.” Geary admitted it was not a good finish by either himself or Wang. “It wasn’t the best way to win,’’ he told the PGA Tour of China website. “You can’t always script what’s going to happen. I was thinking playoff. “He had made some really good putts about the same length. I was actually quite surprised when he didn’t make the putt because he had been putting really well coming in.’’ But prior to the 18th there was some top golf from Geary with four birdies in the homeward nine holes. “I just sort of hung tough and made my pars when I did. I knew at some point I would make some birdies, and I made some good birdies on the back nine.” One of the turning points came

Josh Geary. PHOTOS: PGA TOUR OF CHINA

at No 11, a 172-yard par three. Geary nailed his tee shot to two feet for a tap-in birdie. Geary said he kept an eye on the leaderboard throughout the day but knew his main opposition came from within his own play-

ing group. “I watched the board all day, and I was playing with the guys who were leading, so I knew where I was all day,” Geary said. “I tried to not let that affect me too much. I tried to do my own thing and do

my process and finish it off. “My swing was kind of a struggle this week, and I didn’t have a go-to shot. But actually, I was feeling much more comfortable today,” Geary said, noting he only missed three fairways in the final round.

A week with Lydia Ko in Florida part of new scholarship

L

ydia Ko is lending her weight to a new scholarship programme that will see promising young New Zealand golfers spend a week with her in the United States. The successful recipients of the scholarship will travel to Ko’s training base in Florida where they will spend a week with her and receive hands-on guidance and mentoring. New Zealand Golf chief executive Dean Murphy was delighted Ko was already willing to give back to the country that provided her with so many opportunities. “Lydia shares New Zealand Golf’s goal of wanting to see more New Zealand golfers succeed on the international stage and we are delighted to be working closely with her on this initiative,” Murphy said. “The scholarships are a brilliant initiative which provide a truly remarkable opportunity for young New Zealand female players. Lydia is a wonderful ambassador for our sport and our country and this will be a once in a lifetime experience for the scholarship recipients.” “I cannot overstate how special an opportunity this is and for me, this underlines what a special person Lydia Ko is. At such a young age and so early in her career, she is already looking at ways to give back. This is an incredibly generous gesture and really demonstrates Lydia’s wonderful character.”

Ko said she was pleased to assist. “I am really pleased to be able to work with New Zealand Golf and in a small way help the next young golfers. I received assistance from so many people as I was growing up and it is nice to be able to give something back. I’m looking forward to spending time with the recipients and hopefully they enjoy their time with me. ” The inaugural recipients for 2015 are Ann Jiheh An and Eujin Kang. Anna Jiheh An is 11 years old from Coatesville School. Earlier in the year she won the North Harbour Junior Tiger tournament for the 11 and under category. “Lydia is my favourite player, I can’t wait to get more practice and maybe be the best like her” said An. Priscilla Eujin Kang is 12 years old and attends Albany Junior High School. She has had a good year, winning the Junior Tiger North Harbour tournament for the 12-14 age group and Auckland Secondary School Stroke Play nett. “Receiving this scholarship means a lot to me. I really admire Lydia and her focus and hard work and I want to be just like her one day. This scholarship will help me learn more and train harder so I can turn pro and hopefully live the dream like Lydia is” said Kang. Applications for the 2016 scholarship programme will open in January 2016.

he new Big T Putter line from Odyssey merges the Number 1 Putter in Golf’s new Fusion RX insert with the revolutionary dual alignment of the Versa range and the Marxman alignment system. Standing over a putt, you’ll look down on the Big T and find it easier to line your putts up. The new Fusion RX insert combines the White Hot insert—the winningest insert of all time—with ultra-

thin stainless steel mesh and Odyssey’s patented Metal-X roll pattern. The result is a faster roll that reduces skidding and gets the ball into a pure roll faster. The VLine, one of the hottest mallet shapes on Tour with its high MOI and pleasing symmetry, was the catalyst for the Big T design, but the range also includes a handful of major-winning, Tour proven head shapes. New approach needed for attracting young NZ golfers

I

worry about the number of Kiwi kids who are playing golf around the country and what impact this might have on the future of our sport. The official numbers tell me that tens of thousands of kids are participating in various programmes all over the country, however, this is only part of the picture and the wrong part to look at. Organisations such as The First Tee, SNAG and our own Kiwi Golf, Junior Tiger and GDM initiatives have delivered programmes to literally hundreds of thousands of Kiwi kids over the past five years. These programmes are excellent and these people are doing a great job of introducing the sport to our children. The general emphasis has been on seeing as many Kiwi kids as possible and giving them a great golf experience in the hope this will build an interest that results in future participation. The sad truth, however, is that not enough of these children are having any type of meaningful long term connection with the sport. Junior golf membership numbers have halved since 2005 and while numbers are currently static, there is little sign of growth. We have a great number of excellent introductory programmes but our young players need more than a brief golfing experience or to be shown how to swing a club. In my view, they need to form some sort of connection and affection for the game that will endure longer than a brief golfing experience. Our job is much harder these days as young Kiwis have very different lifestyles and many different activities that compete for their attention. In days gone by, young peo-

ple often learned how to hit a golf ball in the family back yard or down at the local park. These days there are not too many families who have back yards while local parks have long since erected nasty no golf signs. These challenges aside, once the sport is introduced to Kiwi kids, I believe the love of the game must be fostered and grown in the wider family environment, the club environment or at facilities that help new players learn the game. This is where all of us in the golf sector (participants and administrators alike) need to get involved. We need to all play our part in creating an attitude and environment that fosters growth in our sport rather than one that just looks after current players. Whether in the wider family environment or at the local club, we can all play our part in introducing more kids to the sport. I also can’t help but thinking our facility structure in New Zealand is fundamentally wrong and doesn’t help or promote growth. We have too many membership clubs who are all competing with each other and marketing relatively the same product to the same people. There is a relatively small number of facilities that appeal to new golfers by having the type of environment that encourages new participants to learn then grow their love of the game in a welcoming and fun environment. Recently I spent a couple of days in Vancouver and

stumbled across an 18 hole pitch and putt course in the suburbs. At this course, no more than four clubs are allowed and none of the holes are over 125 yards. The course was covered in kids, families and golfer of all abilities – many who were learning the game. I turned up on a Sunday morning and for $15 had a green fee ticket, hire clubs and I was off in my jandals and t-shirt. We need more facilities like this in New Zealand. New Zealand Golf has recently empowered a working group to evaluate, research and develop the best approach to junior golf in New Zealand. My general feeling is that while there are so many good programmes running, we are not approaching the long term participation interests of our sport in a co-ordinated manner. Sadly, for all of the investment and endeavour, junior membership numbers are also not increasing. Headed by one of the most knowledgeable men on golf and player development that I know in Murray Macklin, this group of nine experts from all parts of the golf sector has been charged with figuring out what we all collectively need to do to get more New Zealand children playing golf. I look forward to seeing the outcome of their work later in year. I hope it provides the framework for us all to move forward in a co-ordinated manner that results in many more kids playing our great sport for the rest of their lives.

COMMENT

Andrew Whiley

A hidden gem that I rate as a success

I

recently went to play golf at Balclutha Golf Club. Now, I have been in Dunedin for 12 years and this was the first time I have teed it up there. What a mistake! I wished I had have gone there over 10 years ago because it was another of those hidden gems around the country. Upon arriving at the golf course, it felt different, really inclusive, where everyone talks to everyone. Around 50 players teed it up and about a half hour before tee-off the cooking crew head out to play. After a few jokes and very little warm up everyone was out to their starting tees. Balclutha Golf Club is typical of many small, country-style golf courses in that it has barely one greenkeeper and lots of volunteer help. The course has a nice design with a good mix of holes with a challenging par three to start with, and a testy par five finishing hole. The ambience of the course with the views, trees, the odd lake and the varied terrain makes for a nice walk. However, what I really enjoyed was the clubhouse spirit after golf. It reminded me of what golf was like in many club-

houses around the country 20 years ago. The community spirit, banter, active bar with volunteers and chatter from table to table was great to see. I quickly realised why the kitchen crew went out early because the fish sandwiches after golf were simply superb. Like every club around the country, there is concern about drink-driving limits yet three hours after golf at least half the field was still there. Why? Because they enjoy each others company. The big screen television was on and some watched the game but most talked to each other and also visited the other tables. Now, what I am writing about may be what many of the smaller clubs experience week-to-week but many of the city clubs seem to have lost this atmosphere. People don’t linger in the bar and socialise as much as they used to. Some may blame the alcohol and driving limits, time constraints, and family commitments but really I think most clubs have lost a lot of social atmosphere. In my opinion, why some of the smaller clubs seem to succeed in the social

arena versus the big clubs is that they mix the draw. Everyone plays with everyone from week to week no matter what your age or handicap. You don’t know who you are playing with until you turn up and you get to know everyone. I know of committee members at city golf clubs that have been members for over 20 years who do not even know other members that have been active at the club for the same amount of time or longer. That is because they have been playing in their same groups week in and week out. A successful golf club is one where all members are included. Any club is only as successful as the weakest members. So the key question is how do you change this? Actually the answer is simple – include all members. Mix the draw up, show all members they are equal and have some fun. If you don’t know what I am talking about take a road trip with some of your golfing mates and head to a couple of country courses down the road. Make sure you play with the locals and enjoy their company afterwards and you will have a memorable time. Thanks Balclutha, I will be back.

St Andrews — greatest venue of all This year’s Open Championship returns to the home of golf, and regardless of the outcome, another chapter in the rich history of the Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland will be written. Understandably, the literature of golf’s founding venue is the most extensive of any golf course on the planet thanks to its 600 years (or so) of existence. Books on St Andrews have covered the evolution and architecture of the course, famous matches and Open Championships, golfing visitors who fell in love with the town and ended up living there for extended periods, and the influence of St Andrews on the game of golf – particularly through the rules. One of the best is “Tommy’s Honor” by Kevin Cook, covering the lives of “old’’ Tom Morris and “young’’ Tom Morris, the birth of the Open Championship, the struggles of the early professional golfers and the pioneering work of Old Tom on not only the Old Course, but numerous other courses designed by him. Young Tom, who won the original Open trophy (a belt, later replaced by the famous claret jug) for three consecutive victories in the 1860s, died at just 24 from causes unknown – a novel has even been written suggesting he was murdered. On the other hand his father lived to 87 and attributed his longevity to a daily dip in the frigid waters of St Andrews Bay, no mean feat even in summer. He was still competing in Open Championships well into his sev-

enties. As the title suggests, the book deals mainly with Young Tom’s career, and be warned: once you start it, you will find it impossible to put down. New Zealand golfers have come close to Open Championship glory on a couple of occasions, notably in 1978 when Simon Owen was tied for the lead with three holes to go, only to finish runner-up to Jack Nicklaus. In 1995, Michael Campbell held the lead going into the final round, but struggled in windy conditions with a 76 to finish one shot behind the winner John Daly. Campbell was also prominent in 2005, the year of his US Open triumph, finishing tied for fifth behind Tiger Woods. As he had done in 2000, Woods relentlessly plotted his way around the Old Course avoiding bunkers and three putts to win comfortably again. It would be a brave ranking list of the world’s golf courses that did not feature the Old Course at No 1. Yet most people who play it for the first time may wonder what all the fuss is about. For the average player, St Andrews is very playable, especially with the assistance of a local caddy. The main problem may be finishing up in the wrong part of the huge double greens, and 40 putts or more in a round would not be uncommon. The unique subtleties of the course only become apparent as time goes on. The other problem might be getting on the course in the first place, with every golfer in the world having the Old Course on their bucket list. A couple of tips: if you are

playing on your own, your chances are good on any given day as there are always cancellations. Just turn up and the starter will find a way to fit you in. Secondly, if you consider the current green fee of £170 a bit steep, consider playing in the winter months when it drops to £80. Just dress for the conditions, which may in fact be not much different to those in July and August. Remember, as well, there is no golf on Sundays, a tradition no doubt going back to the Scottish Church’s influence and also to Old Tom Morris’s belief that the course deserved a rest for one day each week. The exception being Open Championship week, and the winner of the 29th Open Championship to be played at St Andrews (the 144th overall) will be crowned on Sunday 19th July 2015.

Goood Morning, Vietnam! R

obin Williams who played Adrian Cronaeur, a radio presenter in the movie, Good morning Vietnam, would begin each broadcast with a loud and cheerie “Goood morning, Vietnam!” Well, you can welcome the day with that same “Goood morning, Vietnam” when you participate at the inaugural Accor Vietnam World Masters, a golf championship that Go Golfing is hosting in September in Da Nang, Central Vietnam. World Masters tournaments are open to club golfers aged 35 years and over. Competition is offered in age and handicap divisions. Playing with golfers of a similar age and standard, from all over the world, is a major drawcard for World Masters events. The Accor Vietnam World Masters will see you play at Da Nang’s world-class golf courses with your own friendly personal caddies and golf cart. Da Nang Golf Club, Montgomerie Links Vietnam and Laguna Lang Co Golf Club will give you the ultimate golfing experience. Much more than a golf tournament, there are lively social and entertainment events every night. International acts will be a highlight at the welcome and farewell celebrations. The Pullman Da Nang Hotel will host Vietnam’s biggest 19th hole festivities and golf presentations each night with stunning sunset views to the beach. A decadent farewell dinner caps off the funfilled week.

The promoters, Go Golfing and Golfasia, have just celebrated a massive success with their Centara World Masters in Hua Hin, Thailand with more than 700 visitors from 23 countries. Pablo Soon, from the Philippines, said: “We travel the world playing tournaments. This is the best service we have ever experienced. There were staff to look after everything.” Numbers for the

Accor World Masters are limited for its inaugural launch and will inspire more personal celebrations. Beyond the fairways, Da Nang is laid back and friendly, has an attractive climate, high quality accommodation, mountains and scenery, a safe environment, and fresh local cuisine. It is known for its sandy beaches and history as a French colonial

port. It’s a popular base for visiting the inland Bà Nà hills. Here the Hai Vân Pass has views of Da Nang Bay and the Marble Mountains, five limestone outcrops that are home to caves and Buddhist shrines. As Vietnam’s fourth largest city, Da Nang has long been a popular destination with three UNESCO World Heritage attractions – the ancient trading port of Hoi An, the citadel in the former imperial city of Hue, and the My Son (Hindu) Sanctuary – making it a region of immense cultural and historic importance. Accor, the world’s biggest chain of hotels and resorts, are the major sponsor of the Vietnam World Masters. Promoters Go Golfing and Golfasian both received top honours at the World Golf Awards in Portugal in November 2014. Golfasian were awarded Asia’s Best Golf Tour operator while Australian based Go Golfing were recognized as oceania’s best. >> For more information on the Accor Vietnam World Masters Golf Championship in Da Nang from 6 to 12 September 2015 visit www.gogolfing.net.au under tournaments or call 1300 55 28 55 (+61 7 5508 2250).

The club dates from 1936, although it operated with only nine holes until 1941 before going into recess. In 1969 a fresh group of golfers got active, purchased land and were playing from 1974. Five years later they had 18 holes and in 1985 they built their clubhouse, which has recently been refurbished. The signature hole is the par3 13th which plays over a steep drop to a green protected by bunkers and water hazards. Kerikeri itself, a stunning town with many historic sites, has become one of New Zealand’s must-visit places for tourists.

The 16 year-old didn’t have it all his own way, Kerikeri’s Alex Neely set the early pace claiming the tournaments low round of 66 for the second straight year in round one. A second round of 75 saw Neely fall back to a tie for the lead with Nitsche and Sheldon Kearns (Waipu) after both players carded rounds of 72 and 69. Luke Brown (The Pines) carded the best final round, a five under round of 67 to finish third, a final round 72 for Kearns seeing him settle for 4th. Nitsche and Neely carded a pair of 69’s to finish tied at six under par meaning a sudden death playoff using the 18th hole was required to determine a winner. Just the one hole was needed to separate the two, Neely made bogey after missing the green to the left where he was unable to get up and down which left Nitsche needing to make a testing four foot putt for par to claim the title which he managed. In division two it was a former local in Steven (Fish) Franklin, now playing out of Maraenui who won by a single shot from Neil Smith and Todd Warmington both Northern Wairoa. MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP PENNANT WINNERS FOUND SUNDAY the 24th May was the day 10 teams would take to the Ngaruawahia and Cambridge Golf Courses in what was to be the Finals of Championship Pennants 2015. Ngaruawahia hosted Divisions 1, 3 and 5 whilst Cambridge hosted divisions 1 and 4. Sunday the 24th bought us a mix of all four seasons to the golf course weather wise, with a day of constant brolly up, brolly down, jacket on, jacket off conditions.

The Division One championship was contested by Ngaruawahia and Hamilton. And it was the team from Hamilton who got on top early after a 2-1 victory in the morning foursomes. It was the young guns of Sam McGovern and Sam Brinkworth who got Hamilton off to the best of starts with a 2/1 victory over Rob McLeod and Ryan Hill (Ngaruawahia). Following suit in a close battle was Andrew McKechnie and Mark Boe with a 1up victory over Greg Bell and Phil Hunter (Ngaruawahia). Ngaruawahia’s number 1 pairing of Jordan Rangihika and Brendon Seidel got the hosts their only point of the morning after a 1up victory over Hamilton’s Denzel Ieremia and Anthony Koers. The hosts needed to get off to a hot start in the afternoon if they wanted to repeat celebrations from 2014. And it was a hot start they got. Ngaruawahia’s Rob McLeod beat Sam Brinkworth 2/1, whilst Phil Hunter beat Sam McGovern 3/2. Ngaruawahia’s number 4 Greg Bell beat Anthony Koers (Hamilton). The match had swung in the hosts favour however, Hamilton wouldn’t give up with good wins from

WAIROA WIN CORONATION CUP WAIROA reversed previous year’s result in winning the Coronation Cup. Wairoa won the Coronation Cup last month at the Hawkes Bay Golf Course after 72 matches of golf. There was no clear favourite after Saturdays’ two rounds for the 6 members of each team representing Wairoa, Napier, Takapau and Pongoroa. These four teams had won representation after winning zone finals in May. As play progressed it was obvious that the final two from last year Wairoa and Napier were going to be fighting it out again. Wairoa came through to eventually collate 2 points off each of the other three team’s finishing on 6 points and having won a total of 23.5 games. Last year’s winners Napier were runners up on 4 points, only losing to Wairoa and winning 19 games. Third were Takapau on 2 points, winning 15.5 games and in fourth

GOLF TRAILS place was Pongaroa who unfortunately didn’t get any points but won 14 games along the way. Congratulations to all the clubs for getting to the finals, especially Takapau and Pongaroa, two smaller country clubs. It highlights a great year for Wairoa who been very competitive in most events this year, winning divisions of Pennants and now capping it off with the Coronation Cup.

TWELVE YEAR OLD WINS WANGANUI CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP

LUCY MAY / BAYS BRONZE 2015 THE annual women’s team 36 hole match play challenge between Hawkes Bay and Poverty Bay was held at Poverty Bay Golf Club on Monday 25th May in very challenging conditions. The day started out fine, but the storm fast approached from the south bringing bouts of sleet and strong wind for much of the day. Each side fields 32 players (16 players in each of Lucy May and Bays Bronze teams), the format consisting of singles matches in the morning and foursomes in the afternoon. There were some brave and closely contested matches, but the clear winners were once again Poverty Bay, claiming both matches 17 / 7. They have now held the Lucy May Cup for the past 8 years and the Bay Bronze Jug for 10 years. As an aside comment, Andrea Haisman played in the field – the great niece of May Haisman who instigated the tournament with Lucy Mitchell, and Andrea is the first Haisman to play in the Tournament since May retired from the sport in the late 1980’s.

NORTHERN ZONE PENNANTS NORTHERN Zone Poverty Bay women hold their own Pennant Competition (separate from Hawkes Bay Central and Southern Zones) and for the past 37 years (Yes... 37 years) Poverty Bay Club’s pennant teams have come home empty handed.

So... you can imagine the jubilations earlier this month when they finally ‘broke the drought’ and brought the Pennant Shield back to their home course with a grand total of 29 points– 4.5 ahead of 2nd place Waikohu. Roll on next year! 

HOLE IN ONES AT CASTLECLIFF CONTINUE Pictured above June McKinnon & Anne Witters, Poverty Bay’s Bays Bronze.

Pictured above are Margaret Stephenson, Karen Hay, Martha Manaena and Jo Kerr.

Birthday Ambrose gave Life Member Neil Campbell (28 Handicap) his 2nd Hole in One of his career but his first on our 4th hole. Congratulations to these players and may this increase in hole in ones at our club continue.

THE month of May has traditionally been a good month for hole in ones here at Castlecliff Golf Club in Wanganui and 2015 was no exception. There wasn’t just one or two but three Hole in Ones this year. It all started with our club captain Grant Clark (10 Handicap), he had a bad start to his round with 2 pick up’s in his first 3 holes in a Stableford round before acing the 4th Hole – his 2nd hole in one here. 5 days later Geoff Russell (3 Handicap) a familiar face of the club for the past 40 years got his first hole in one her. It was on the 13th hole which is our hardest par 3 and was on his way to shooting another par round. On the last day of the month, our Queens

ON the weekend of 6th and 7th of June Wanganui Golf Club held the final of all Ladies and Men’s Club Championship matches. What started as a rather wet and windy morning turned into very pleasant conditions for golf. A crowd of close to a hundred followed the thirteen matches and were rewarded with some excellent golf and some very close matches. With five of the matches being played over 36 holes, the golf started at 8.15 in the morning and the last group finished close to 4.00pm. And what a day it turned out to be. The Men’s Senior Club Championship had Justin Newland ahead by three after the morning round and some big hitting power from him in the afternoon saw him take out the title 3/2 from Keith Johnson. Gary McMillan who has only been playing the game for a short time took out the Junior Championship from Ian Howells and Heemi Stevenson had a convincing win 6/4 over Peter Wallis to win the Intermediate Championship. The Wallis family had three members of the family in finals today with Peter’s wife Yvonne winning the Bronze 1 Ladies Championship and son Bradley prevailing 4/3 over Lee Drummond in the Intermediate Plate. Colin Milne took out the C Grade Championship winning one up over Lester Eyles. The Ladies finals saw Pru McDowall win the Bronze 2 Ladies Championship 2/1 from Caro Hutchins. Without a doubt the highlight match of the day was the Senior Ladies Championship between the seasoned campaigner, Caroline Scott and the young and enthusiastic pretender Tara Raj. Caroline Scot has many Wanganui Golf Club titles to her credit and Tara Raj who only recently turned 12 years old and has a huge golfing future ahead of her. After the morning eighteen holes the match was all square evenly poised and continued for another five holes in the afternoon. Young Tara managed to go two ahead and after winning the 15th hole was three up with three to play. The match was over at the 16th hole and Tara became the youngest golfer to win the Wanganui Senior Ladies

On Saturday Feilding local Brandon Perry played very solid golf to defeat last year’s champion Rhys Harold (PN) on the 19th and Sunday morning dawned with four Feilding players in the semi-finals of

Club Captain Tony Boxall thanked all those who had worked so hard to make the weekend such a success. He also wished everyone safe travels home and a warm invitation to return in 2016.

Coming events at Levin include the annual Manawatu/Wanganui versus Wellington clash on Sunday 9th August. This involves the Seniors, Juniors and Masters. Some very good golf expected and certainly worth watching. Sunday 16th August is the clubs Atkinson Trophy which is a mixed Canadian Foursome. Then Sunday 23rd August Levin will contest the Cooksley Cup. This is between Levin, Foxton, Buckley and Otaki and is scheduled to be played at Foxton Golf Club. Then the Super loft Cup set down for Sunday 29th August.

MANAWATU CLAIM PALMANUI SHIELD MANAWATU GOLF CLUB added to their collection of Pennant trophies this season with victory in the Palmanui Shield competition. Final rounds were played last month. Manawatu had also claimed the A Grade and Handicap pennant titles this season. The Palmanui competition was reformatted this year due to the changes to B Grade and the addition of the handicap grade. It went back to a reserve grade competition which it was originally set up for many years ago, to give the stronger clubs with greater depth of players another competition for players this miss out on their clubs A Grade team each round. The teams competing this year were Manawatu, Palmerston North, Feilding, Wanganui and Levin. Teams played a home and away series, playing each team twice – once at home, and once away. The playing format is the same as the A Grade with morning foursomes followed by singles matches in the afternoon. Manawatu went through the season un-

Manawatu’s success in this competition in particular could mainly be put down to having the largest membership in the district. This is also complemented by having a very strong junior programme, which grows the pool of young players to select from. The club has invested over time to create high class practice facilities, which encourages players to practice regularly. 

A strategic golf plan by Shandon Golf Club’s John Morgan and Steve Weir has payed dividends with their development team winning this year’s Dudding Shield. The 36 hole development team is a backup to the Duncan Cup competition. “Two Years ago Steve Weir [who manages our Premier 36 hole Team] and I planned to run a wider 36 hole squad in an effort to further develop the depth of quality players at Shandon Golf Club. This year we had 27 players going for 20 spots in the top 2 Teams, said John. This year the team took a little while to get momentum however when they had a settled Team they won their last 4 games by beating Wainuiomata 10 to 5, Titahi Bay 8.5 to 6.5 and Carterton 12.5 to 2.5 and then Wainuiomata 10.5 to 4.5 in the final. John Morgan is excited about the future of Shandon Golf. “We have Excellent bunch of boys well led by our Team Captain Pat Higgins seen here holding the trophy with good support from some promising Juniors being Taylor Belsham and Ryan Fahey. These up and comers mixed with our experienced match players being Mark Paterson, Kiriama Stevens [unbeaten in 2015] and the old campaigner Murray Sim bodes well for the future. We look forward bringing up some more home grown Shandon Junior talent in 2016”, he said. Shandon is the only Club in Wellington that has 2 teams in the 36 hole competition

RICOH MIRAMAR CLEAN SWEEP OF WELLINGTON’S 36 HOLES MENS INTERCLUB TROPHIES MIRAMAR Golf Club’s senior men’s team has been working hard over the last few years to become again the premier interclub team in Wellington.

This year Ricoh Miramar successfully won the pool play round of the two part competition by 13 points. With the Otaki Cup safely locked away in early April, the team settled down to compete in three tough rounds against the other top three clubs for the prestigious Duncan Cup. This Trophy was presented by a past New Zealand Amateur Champion, Arthur Duncan who was also four times winner of the Miramar Senior Club championship The Duncan Cup presented by Arthur for senior Interclub match play in 1946 has now been played continuously for 69 years, with Miramar having held the cup for 12 of those years. UNPRECEDENTED INTERCLUB SEASON FOR WEEDONS PERFECT weather and course conditions at Weedons Country Club on Sunday June 14 matched the dream result for the host club with Weedons Black overcoming previously unbeaten Tai Tapu Green in an exciting Patterson Cup Final. At the end of regulation 18 holes the match was locked up at 4 all and a five man play off ensued with Weedons eventually coming out vic-

tors 3-2. Both clubs received encouragement from their loyal band of supporters as games progressed and the spirit in which the matches were played belied the importance of the occasion, which was a credit to everyone involved. It was the perfect three from three finish to the Interclub season for Weedons who wrote themselves into Canterbury Central history books as the first club to win the Central Shield, Brownie Cup and Patterson Cup treble in one season.

Pictured above are the Patterson Cup Champions, Weedons Black from left, Denis Parkinson, Nathan Maxwell, Karl Lineton (Captain), Lindsay Gianelly, Bob Grimwood, Greg Hills, Mark Hussey and Richard Didham. Smart Cup Winners, pictured below from left, Murray Chapman, David Livesey, Rod Frewen, Steve Piper, Ross Luscombe (Captain), Sean Spencer, Shane Peters and Dean Hamilton.

Patterson Cup honours for individual wins were taken out by Deane Barlow, Charteris Bay winning the Keith Vogan Trophy for Peninsular and Mark Hussey, Weedons the Trevor Evans Trophy for Selwyn. Both players ended round robin play unbeaten with five wins from five matches. The Morgan Kennedy Peninsula Trophy played for by Patterson Cup Invitational selected teams from Selwyn and Peninsula was won in another evenly matched tussle by Selwyn 4.5 to 3.5.

GOLF TRAILS Weedons Country Club continued their dominance of the Canterbury Central Shield competition winning the trophy for the sixth consecutive year with Weedons Red defeating a gallant Ellesmere 4-2 in the final round. The Weedons Red team from left, Jake Hallinan, Jonathan Stieller, Jesse Rich, Forde Hanson, Mike Langan, Richard Mills, Devon Nightingale (absent Aaron Mulcay and Hayden Payne) remained unbeaten through the round robin competition with Lincoln finishing runner up and Weedons Black third. The coveted Grant Lethaby Trophy for most individual wins in the season was won by Weedon’s club mates Jesse Rich (Weedons Red) and Keith Mills (Weedons Black) who both were unbeaten in the competition with five wins and a half.

It is par 72 made up of par 3, 4 & 5s over 3270m (18 holes). The average time needed to play the course is approximately 1hr 15min (9 holes) and 2hrs 30min (18 holes). Green fees are $10 for 9 holes and $20 for 18 holes, and pay for games and get the 6th game free. This is a great new initiative for Everglades offering casual, new and existing members two different options to choose from, depending on their personal situation.

NZ Golf recently completed a nationwide survey and two of the main issues golf clubs and players are struggling with is the cost of green fees and the available time needed to complete a round which Everglades have addressed with their Purple Course.

DRAMATIC FINISH TO PRESIDENT’S GRADE THERE was a dramatic finish to Presidents Grade after the final round was held at Mcleans Island Golf Club on 19 April. There were four teams tied on 15 points going into the last round. After the final round, Waimairi Beach and McLeans Island were tied on 17 points and 58 individual games. The count-back based on the round robin match earlier in the season could still not decide a winners as they had a draw in that game. So a sudden death play-off was required (the first time in the history of Presidents grade). Graeme Mayby (McLeans Island) and Ron Marshall (Waimairi Beach) were selected for the sudden death playoff with Marshall winning the first play-off hole. Waimairi Beach were declared the winners of Presidents Grade for 2015. Pictured is the winning team of (left to right) Michael Irving, Dick White, Ron Seel, David Smith, Christer Strom, Kevin Laredo, Ron Marshall & Grant Carr.

Lindsay Galbraith (Coringa) won the Most Valuable Player for the year.

CANTERBURY CENTRAL DEFEAT CANTERBURY NORTH THIS annual rep match play fixture was played in fine but blustery conditions at the Waimakariri Gorge Golf Club on 10 May with Canterbury Central defeating Canterbury North by 26 matches to 22. In the Senior division, the mornings reverse singles were well matched with Central edging past North 7 matches to 5 but in the afternoon Central were dominant winning 9.5 - 2.5. The Masters division was a very tight affair in the mornings reverse singles with honours shared 3 all, however North showed their strength in the afternoon singles winning 5 – 1. The Junior division was a game of two halves with North dominating 4.5 – 1.5 in the morning but Central bouncing back to win the afternoon singles 4 matches to 2. 

DUNSTAN GC BEST PRESENTED COURSE IN SOUTHERN REGION THE Dunstan Golf Course at Clyde is a cut above its opposition. It received the Southern Turf Managers Association’s annual award last month for being the “best-presented course” in the region, which covers the area from Christchurch south.

Scott Nevill (23) has been superintendent of the Dunstan course since completing his apprenticeship at the Wanaka Golf Club three years ago. Modest about the accolade, he says the award was “a bit of a surprise” but a good achievement for the club. “I’m the only person who is paid to look after the course but I don’t do it alone. It would be a hell of a push, especially in spring and summer when it’s really busy. There’s a whole team of volunteers who help me out,” he said yesterday. “It’s been a long, hard three years, working up to this point, but there’s always room for improvement.” Dunstan Golf Club vice-president Barry McCall said it was a “high accolade indeed” for the club. “For a small, nine-hole course like Dunstan to win this ahead of all the other courses is very meritorious. “Club members are ecstatic with Scott’s work and for the club to get this recognition. It’s very prestigious, especially for a little club, and we pride ourselves on presenting the course as neat and tidy. “We’ve got garden areas and walking paths through it and recreational walkers often use it, so it’s really a public amenity,” Mr McCall said. Mr Nevill, who grew up in Clyde, said it was a privilege to work on the Dunstan course for his first job in turf management. Describing himself as “not really a golfer” he declined to reveal his golf handicap. “Don’t ask... I just have a social bat every now and again. I certainly wouldn’t call myself a golfer.” Asked what was next he said it would be
