Old Course, New Course, Pinehurst No 2
A
nother British Open has come and gone. The latest was played at what is considered the home of golf, St Andrews in Scotland. Golf has been played in the St Andrews’ region since the 1400s and what is called the Old Course is easily the world’s most famous golf course. The Old Course has been the venue of the British Open, or more correctly The Open Championship, an amazing 29 times. The Old Course is recorded as having been in operation since 1552. Indeed it is old. A friend of mine, Hank from Texas, rang up for a game there a while back. He was asked if he would like to play the Old Course. Hank was a little dismayed at such a suggestion. “What do ya mean, the Old Course?,’’ Hank told them in his strong southern US accent. “God damn it. Give me the new one. I don’t want to play an old one.’’ Hank’s comments got me thinking. Is there a New Course? There is indeed. The New Course is a mere baby in compari-
son. It was established in 1895. In fact the Old Course and the New Course are part of seven golf courses in St Andrews. The other five are Balgove, Castle Course, Eden, Jubilee and Strathtyrum. Hank reluctantly agreed to play the Old Course and named a Sunday as a day he would be in town. There was more disappointment when Hank was told the Old Course wasn’t open on a Sunday. “What do ya mean?,’’ Hank again questioned. “Are the greens being cored?’’ He was told no, the greens are not being cored. The course is closed on a Sunday, he was told in an affirmative Scottish voice. There are only a few times in a year when the Old Course is open for play on a Sunday. The Open Championship is one them. The names of Old Course and New Course got me thinking of another course with a name that raises questions. That is Pinehurst No 2 in the United States which was the scene of Michael Campbell’s win in the US Open in 2005 and Danny Lee’s win in the US Amateur
Championship in 2008. I wondered if there was a Pinehurst No 1. There is. But there’s also a Pinehurst No 3, No 4, No 5, No 6, No 7, No 8 and No 9. All nine courses are part of the same resort and until the development of Mission Hills in China it was ranked the world’s largest golf resort. This all proved very confusing for Ricky, an Australian friend of mine. He rang up for a game and politely introduced himself. “My name is Ricky. I am ringing from Austrayaya and wanted to book in for a game at Pinehurst,’’ Ricky told them. When asked if he wanted one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight or nine, Ricky was quite adamant. “Nah mate, I want to do all 18 holes.’’ Footnote: The names of Hank and Ricky are either the products of the author’s imagination or used in a fictitious manner. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.

New sponsor for Taranaki Open
A
n Auckland-based business has become the major sponsor of Taranaki’s feature golf tournament. The business is Augusta Funds Management which syndicates commercial property. The tournament is the Taranaki Open which will be held at the New Plymouth Golf Club from October 1-4. The Taranaki Open is one of six events that make up New Zealand’s Charles Tour for professional golfers and aspiring amateurs. New Plymouth Golf Club general manager Simon Rowe was delighted at the new association with Augusta Funds Management which becomes the naming rights’ sponsor. “A lot of work has already gone into running this year’s tournament and to be able to announce Augusta’s involvement is the icing on the cake from our club’s point of view,’’ Rowe said. “We hope that this will be the start of a long term relationship between ourselves and Augusta. We will definitely be putting on quite a show for both the golfers and spectators”. Taranaki Golf’s executive officer Nick Northam also welcomed Augusta’s sponsorship.
“Taranaki Golf is delighted to be able to confirm Augusta’s involvement in this year’s Taranaki Open. Our association’s role is about fostering the game of golf in our region and The Taranaki Open is our showcase event and affords an opportunity for our leading amateur golfers to test themselves against some of the top professionals in the country. “It will also be fantastic to be able to watch these players up close, and I’m sure New Plymouth will do a great job in showcasing their course and making the event one to remember”. Augusta is the market leader in commercial property syndication. Augusta has over $1.3 billion of funds under management across 170 properties throughout New Zealand and Australia. Augusta has cemented its place in the market through syndication of properties such as the Spark Place building, Southgate Retail Centre and numerous Countdown supermarkets throughout the country. While they are based in Auckland, Augusta also has a New Plymouth office after the acquisition of KCL Property (a Taranaki based commercial property syndicator) in 2014.
Lydia Ko signs for Malaysia
N
EW ZEALAND golfer and World No 2 Lydia Ko has been named as a major draw card for the 2015 Sime Darby LPGA tournament in Malaysia October 8 – 11. The US$2 million purse tournament is played on the East course of the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, which was reopened in 2010 after makeover by internationally renowned golf course architect firm Parslow and Winter Design. While it is only 8km from the heart of KL, the course has natural wetlands and is home to numerous forms of wildlife and birds. Lydia played the tournament last year and tied for eighth place. “It’s a great tournament,” she says. “I played it for the first time last year and while fortunate to start out strong early on, I couldn’t quite keep it going through the weekend. But I really enjoyed the course, so I am looking forward to returning this year. The fan support for all of us players out on the course is amazing!” The no-cut, 72-hole stroke play tournament is made up of 75 players, including 63 from the PPGA tour. Apart from Ko, tournament organisers have named American Lexi Thompson, currently number 13 in the Rolex world rankings, and Australian Minjee Lee, currently number 18, in the line-up. A host of activities are planned around the tournament, including the debut of a “KL Food Truck Festival”. >> Updates can be found at www.facebook.com/ SimeDarbyLPGAMalaysia. >> For information about visiting Malaysia go to http://www.tourism.gov.my/ en/intl

Danny Lee delivering on his promise By Paul Gueorgieff
D
anny Lee turned 25 on July 24. At the same date his earnings for this season alone on the PGA Tour stood at $US2.7 million. That’s $NZ4.1 million. It’s unfortunate to focus on a player’s earnings but they are a clear indication of how a player is doing on the world’s greatest golfing stage. Lee is doing very well. His breakthrough moment on the PGA Tour came last month when he won the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia. He had to survive a four-way playoff but the fact that he did says something about his fortitude. For us in New Zealand the win was simply confirmation of the immense promise he had shown. But so often the difference between promise and delivering on that promise can be worlds apart. In 2008 he became the youngest winner of the United States Amateur Championship. He was aged 18 years and one month, and although a 17-year-old has since won the tournament, it at the time beat the record previously held by one Tiger Woods. Less than a year later, Lee was at it again. He won the Johnnie Walker Classic in Western Australia to become the youngest winner on the European Tour at the age of 18-1/2 years. First prize was
236,000 euros of which Lee did not receive a penny because he was still an amateur. Later in 2009, Lee turned pro and now his career earnings on the PGA Tour up to his 25th birthday were more than $US4 million. His win in the Greenbrier Classic was worth $US1.2 million ($NZ1.8 million). Lee said he was very nervous when he learned he would be in a playoff to determine the winner of the Greenbrier. “I was just trying to calm down,’’ Lee said. “I was so nervous. My head was blank and I was just trying to breathe.’’ But when the four players arrived at the 18th tee for the first playoff hole, Lee said he immediately switched back into competition mode. “As soon as I stand on the 18th tee box, first playoff (hole), I felt ready. I felt like I could really win this thing.’’ The playoff was reduced to two players when Lee and Canadian David Hearn both birdied the 18th hole by sinking putts that where almost identical to what they had missed in regulation play on the last day. The second playoff hole was the par five 17th. Lee had a tap in par which was enough to win after Hearn put his fourth shot over the back of the green after being in the trees from the tee.
Lee has been one of the busiest players on the PGA Tour. The Greenbrier was his 27th event of the season and one of the reasons he has played so often was to gain as many points as possible to gain a start in the Presidents’ Cup team. The Presidents’ Cup this year has particular appeal for Lee who was born in Korea before moving with his family to New Zealand at the age of eight. “It’s (The Presidents’ Cup) back in Korea. That’s where I’m born,’’ Lee said. The win was also the first for a New Zealander on the PGA for 10 years. The previous win had been by Michael Campbell in the 2005 US Open. By contrast, in the same period, a Korean has won every year on the PGA Tour.

Danny Lee prediction on the mark SOMETIMES we know what we are talking about. Golfer Pacific’s editor Paul Gueorgieff predicted in his column of the April issue that Danny Lee was on the verge of something special and so it proved. Last month Lee became the first New Zealander in 10 years to win on the PGA Tour in the United States when last month taking out the Greenbrier Classic in West
Virginia. Gueorgieff’s opening two paragraphs read: “This could be the year Danny Lee emerges from the pack. “The New Zealand golfer has made a strong start to the 2015 season on the PGA Tour and that could well prove the platform from which he vaults to something more significant.’’
ver the last 24 months Te Puke Golf Club has purchased new machinery to assist the development of the greens and with the expertise of Course Superintendant Michael Homer, the greens have improved out of sight to the stage where they are now considered some of the best in the region, which is a reflection of the club being given the hosting rights for this years Garrard Shield. With a new greens mower and new roller Mike has the greens running at a consistent 11 on the stimp meter, and even got a couple up to 12 when having a play with extra rolling. The greens have been transformed from a dirt base to a sand base with further improvements on the cards, now that the club has hired a full time assistant to Mike - previously the club has operated with just Mike and a part time helper and volunteers. The volunteers are an integral part of the clubs operation, but to get to the next level the club must invest in staff, which of course costs money. This summer will see the construction of a cart shed, to house up to 30 carts, which will boost the club’s ability to provide this service as well as storage for members carts and trundlers. With the recent appointment of Touring Pro Jared Pender the club now boasts two on site Professsionals, so all your golfing needs are covered and with only 400 members, it is usually easy to get on the course for a
hit whether it be 18 holes or 9 holes. The club has also invested in the function side of the business with a new commercial oven and food chiller, and with local girl Adrienne Nigro at the helm, the kitchen has quickly earnt a reputation for fantastic home based cooking which has seen functions increase 200% in the past 12 months, so if you are thinking of hosting a function whether it be a wedding, anniversary, dinner/dance or staff party, contact the club because you simply can’t beat the club prices in both the food and beverage side of the equation. Keep October 17 and 18 free for the Garrard Shield. Contact the club Manager on 533 1832 or golf@golftepuke.co.nz or visit the web site at www.golftepuke.co.nz

Professionals need assistance too
I
’m sure, like most golf fans, you spent more than a few hours glued to your television screens recently watching an enthralling Open Championship in Scotland. Every Open Championship is special, however, when it is played on the majestic links of St Andrews it seems to capture the attention (and affection) of all sports fans like no other event can. There is something truly special about the Old Course and nowhere on Earth is the allure of this magical game more evident than at St Andrews. How wonderful it was to have two New Zealanders in the field at St Andrews. Danny Lee and Ryan Fox have each worked very hard over the past few years so it was incredibly pleasing to see them take their place on the game’s biggest stage. The nation’s media turned their attention to golf and how wonderful it was to see Ryan play so well. While each player has benefited from the support of the talent development system here in New Zealand, their success this year really underlines the long term development nature of our sport. Each player has long since graduated into the professional ranks, however, their transition to become established at the highest level has taken time. Sure there are still exceptions, such as Lydia Ko, Jordan Speith etc, but for most young amateurs who turn professional, there is a long and difficult road ahead before they reach the heights of the game on the world
stage. Traditionally, amateur players are well supported through their elite amateur careers yet when they turn professional they are somewhat left to their own devices. Our programme has continued to evolve with a focus on growing the habits and behaviours and developing the skills required to succeed on the world stage and now provides assistance to rookie professionals as they enter the paid ranks. In fact Ryan Fox was one of the first players to receive assistance under this scheme in 2011. While the current funding levels are low when compared to the overall costs the players face, it is vitally important that our system offers a way of assisting fledgling male and female professional golfers as they enter the most exciting and challenging time in their development; finding and establishing themselves on an international tour. The Rookie Professional Programme sees athletes selected to receive support services and/or funding that will assist their transition into life as a sustainable and self-reliant professional golfer. We do not have to look too far to see an example of a country that has identified this gap in their system and has a programme in place to assist. Golf Australia invest significantly in this area (20 times greater than our investment) and credit the programme as a large part of the success they are having around the globe currently. Our job in New Zealand is twofold. Firstly we need to

Paul Devenport - A blast from the past W
ow, it was great to see Danny Lee win the Greenbrier Classic. As news flowed through the golf community on facebook, one post in particular peaked my interest. It was from Paul Devenport, a former Kiwi touring professional, who had a particular interest. His comment was: ``Had friends, Jason Bohn & David Hearn with a chance to win, fellow Kiwi, Danny Lee up there, and my mate Duane Bock on Kevin Kisner’s bag with a chance. In the end Danny Lee won a playoff that included Hearn & Kisner. Fun to watch...great playing by all.” Many of you will not have heard of Devenport, but he was an extremely talented player that grew up near the Paraparaumu Golf Club, north of Wellington, as one of the top players in the region through the early 1980s. He represented New Zealand numerous times, as an under 21 player, and was also a strong contender in events around Wellington. In 1986, he was offered and took up a scholarship at Houston Baptist College. Now this is not a high profile school but he was a team mate of Colin Montgomery’s for two years. They played and practiced with each other frequently and would often catch up at events ``down under” when Colin played in Australia. For his fourth and final year, he jumped across to Southwest Louisiana where he was a team mate of Craig Perks. After graduating, Paul took the path in turning pro. He plied his trade between the Australian/NZ circuit and
the Canadian Tour. Over the course of 15 years, Paul won four tournaments in Canada – the 1998 and 2001 Quebec Open, the 2000 Alberta Open and the 2001 Victoria Open. The 2000 Alberta Open was an all-Kiwi final with Paul beating his travelling buddy Steve Alker. The Canadian Tour is a very good place to develop as a professional and many successful PGA players have gone on from their success in playing across Canada. This is now part of the PGA Tour and is known as the MacKenzie Tour where every year the top players receive passes onto the Web.com tour and starts on the Canadian Tour. It is great to see Matthew Perry playing some golf on this

tour at present. Some of Paul’s fellow competitors and friends include Steve Stricker, Grant Waite, Mike Weir and Ken Duke. Over the years, Paul had the pleasure of playing with many top players including Ray Floyd, Greg Norman, Ernie Els and Vijay Singh. Unfortunately, in 2005, injuries started to creep into his game. He tore his rotator cuff and since then he really hasn’t played competitive golf. After 15 years of constant travel, the injury kept him home and wondering what to do next. Thinking he was only looking for a temporary job until he healed, he met another Kiwi living on Vancouver Island at a barbecue. They had a chat and before he knew it he was helping his new Kiwi mate laying hardwood flooring. What started off as temporary has become regular life. When I last caught up with Paul he was relaxing on a great British Columbia summer evening, having just spent the day laying hardwood. He is very happy and content with his life, with a charming little three-yearold daughter and a great wife who is a school teacher. They live 20 minutes outside of Victoria BC and doesn’t miss the travelling life of a pro golfer. He plays less than a dozen rounds a year and he still does some golf “magic tricks” that wow his golfing mates which have made him a fan favourite at Pro-Am’s. Well done Paul! You may not have been a household name on the golf tours of the world but you lived the dream. It was great to catch up and I look forward to reading more of your golfing comments on facebook.

The downside of tradition N
OTHING focuses attention on the traditions of golf better than an Open Championship at St Andrews. Inevitably this brings tension between those who want to see changes in the game and its administration and the keepers of those traditions — and this year’s championship was no exception. The week began with the inauguration of four new candidates for the World Golf Hall of Fame: Laura Davies, David Graham, Mark O’Meara and the American golf course architect A W Tillinghast. This was the first time the ceremony has been held outside the Florida home base of the Hall of Fame and no stone was left unturned in moulding the occasion to reflect the spirit of St Andrews and its ancient university and golf course. Like the rules of golf themselves, the criteria for being elected to the Hall of Fame are somewhat opaque in parts, and although all four were worthy recipients of the honour, you might wonder why it took so long for A W Tillinghast (born in 1874 and responsible for designing such courses as Winged Foot, Baltusrol and Bethpage Black to be recognised, some 70 years after his death. Open week also seems to be open season week on the Royal and Ancient. Two years ago, the issue was female membership of the R&A, and Muirfield. The R&A have since addressed this, but Muirfield remains an all male preserve. This year the main issue was television rights to the Open. Ironically for those of us in New Zealand, the R&A
has awarded these to Sky TV from 2017 which has understandably led to a strong reaction from the current broadcaster, the BBC. It was suggested that the reasons for the change were not entirely commercial, and that the R&A had issues with the BBC using “non golf” presenters such as ex-footballer Gary Lineker. The latter was quoted as saying: “The R&A have always been difficult to deal with, and they live in a world where it seems they feel they are superior beings”. This was of course hotly denied by outgoing R&A chief executive Peter Dawson, with the debate then moving on to drug testing during the Open, and the failure of the R&A to broaden golf’s appeal in a changing world. All of this illustrates a key problem faced by golf: even at its flagship event, media coverage tends to have a negative pitch. The recent film documentary by Anthony Baxter “A dangerous game” highlights the challenge. With the subtitle: “Earth’s most precious locations are being turned into playgrounds for the super rich”, Baxter alleges golf is responsible for severe environmental damage in places like Dubai, Croatia, China and even Scotland itself (the Trump International course near Aberdeen). Using actors Alec Baldwin and Robert Kennedy Jr to support his case, and quoting Donald Trump during one

of his more unhelpful outbursts, golf is portrayed as elitist, uncaring and environmentally irresponsible. With selective and sparing use of facts, he nevertheless puts together a reasonably convincing story, particularly for an audience likely to be largely non-golfers. This highlights the real challenge for golf and its administrators: how to get clear and balanced messaging on the many positive features of the game -– its unique positioning amongst sports thanks to the handicap system, its health and social benefits, its positive contribution to local economies and the environment, its ability to teach life skills, and its broad appeal to players regardless of age –- out to a non golfing audience. Until this challenge is met, golf will always be fighting on the back foot. The administrators cannot be left alone to do this. Golfers themselves have a habit of focusing on the negative, so we all need to turn the telescope around and do our bit to promote this great game. In this sense, tradition is our friend, not our enemy: any game that lasts for as long as golf has should be drawing on its rich history which has seen many beneficial changes in the 600 years of its existence so far, to continue to build its future for the next 600 years or more.

Michelle Wie’s NZ caddy Duncan French
D
UNCAN FRENCH took up caddying thinking it would be a cheap way to see Europe. Today he is the caddy of former teenage prodigy Michelle Wie. French, from Christchurch, took up caddying when the Ladies European Tour (LET) came to Australia and New Zealand for a three-week period. “A buddy of mine and I decided to do those three weeks,’’ French recalled. “From there we both decided to go to Europe with the LET to caddy for the year, thinking if we didn't enjoy it, it would be almost like a paid OE around Europe. “I found out I loved caddying.” Not long after being on the tour he was tapped on the shoulder by Wie and he couldn’t have answered her question quicker. “I was working on the LPGA for a few years and was really good friends with Michelle. At the end of 2012 her previous caddie took a job on the men's tour so she called me up and asked if I wanted to work for her -- of course I said yes.” The crowning moment came last year when Wie won the US Open. “Winning the US Open was awesome,’’ French said. “Especially at Pinehurst where Michael Campbell won his US Open and also
where Danny Lee won the US Amateur. It turns out it's a pretty good course for Kiwis.” French said he was relaxed at caddying for one of the world’s highest profile golfers. “I don't find myself feeling any pressure as a caddie. My job is to keep Michelle happy on the course and we have a great time out there which helps keep her relaxed.’’ French said he would be happy to take a job on the PGA Tour for men if an opportunity presented itself. “Yeah I would like to get on the guys’ bag at some stage. They play some pretty special golf courses but you need to be a top 50 player in the world to play the likes of Augusta. I’m very happy where I am now, but in the future would like to get on the PGA for sure.” French said he was keen to convince Wie to play the New Zealand Open but understands she has many other commitments. “I am doing my best to get her to come over. She visited New Zealand a while ago and I'm trying to get her to return but it may be hard to get her to bring her clubs with her.” French has also crossed the path of New Zealand’s superstar Lydia Ko many times.
“Yeah I am good friends with Lydia. We get paired together quite often and I've had dinner with her a few times. “She is a phenomenal kid. Obviously a great golfer but she is a lot of fun off camera too. A sneaky, very funny girl. It's always good to see Kiwis win especially when you're friends with them.” French also had an opinion on the woes of Tiger Woods. “I'm a huge Tiger fan. He's the best golfer to play the game, I believe, ever. I think he will definitely turn it around. I don't think he can beat Jack's (Nicklaus) record but he will win tournaments again, but right now he looks very, very lost with his golf swing. “I certainly wouldn't back myself to turn his game around and am no expert on the subject but my 2 cents on the matter would be for him to take a couple months off with no coach and just get on his driving range at his house and grind it out until he figures it out. Put it this way. If you stood behind him on the range and told him what shots to hit to or what pin on the range to aim at he would do it without thinking about it. He would do it every time.” – NZ GOLF.

GOLF EVENT
Cyclone Pam Recovery Invitational T
HE Committee, after consultation with the NSW PGA and the PVGCC Committee, has settled on the format for the 2015 VGO. In 2015 the focus of the event will be on fund-raising for the Port Vila Golf and Country Club and Mele Village. Many of our visitors over time have developed close ties with caddies and their families from the village and we are confident that all golfers registering for the 2015 event will be motivated to make the trip and support the cause. The emphasis of the week is on having fun, while at the same time raising much needed funds for the Village and the Course. As mentioned in previous briefs many of the sponsors have been hit hard by Cyclone Pam and have had to spend much to get back on track. The Committee felt that it would be difficult to ask them for their full commitment during this difficult period. To this end we have made some modifications to the Professional event with a much reduced prize purse. As the name suggests the event will take the form of an “Invitational” for the Professionals. The Committee will invite a maximum of 12 profes-
sionals to participate for the reduced prize purse of AUD$10,000 with all players guaranteed a cheque at the end of the week. The Amateurs event will be played as a Single Stableford for all grades in both men’s and women’ s. With emphasis on having fun the Committee decided that as the event is going to be modified there would be no Men’s Amateur prize awarded this year. With the hope of getting an increased Amateur field it was felt that the Stableford event will inject more fun into the week.
Schedule Tuesday 1st September: Registration and welcome at the Port Vila Golf and Country Club Wednesday 2nd September: 4 Ball event for the Amateurs and Professionals. Players can enter as a team of 2 or the committee will allocate partners. Thursday 3rd September: 1st Round of Stableford event for all men’s and women’s Amateur. 1st Round of the CP Invitational Professional Event. Friday 4th September: 2nd Round as per Day 1
Saturday 5th September: 3rd Round as per Day 1 Sunday 6th September: 4th Round as per Day 1 Notes to format: 1. Men’s and Ladies Amateur events will be played over 4 days 2. Men’s A, B and C Grades. Ladies A and B Grade. 3. Daily prizes will be offered for each of the 4 days 4. The overall Amateur in each grade will be decided by taking the best 3 of 4 rounds 5. Amateurs have the option to opt out of one day and still be eligible for the overall prizes 6. The Professional Winner will be crowned as VGO Professional Winner 2015 7. There will be no Amateur VGO winner in 2015 8. All presentations will be made on Sunday following the final round
Social This year we will endeavour to hold more events at the PVGCC as part of the concept of putting back to the Club and therefore the Mele Village. The Registration and welcome drinks
will be held at The Golf Club this year and buses to and from various accommodation venues in town will be provided, along with local member’s transport. The traditional Wednesday pro Am is replaced by the 4BBB competition and this will be sponsored by TNT and the presentation and dinner will follow at the club. Thursday is a free night. Friday we will have the traditional “Anchor Inn” Friday with the final format for the evening to be confirmed. Saturday is a Free Night. Sunday is Presentation of trophies and dinner at the PVGCC.
Accommodation As The Holiday Inn Resort Vanuatu will not be opened in time for the event, visitors have the opportunity to book at the Warwick Le Lagon through a wholesaler package sponsored by Millennium Travel linked to the VGO Website www.vanuatugolfopen.info Players may also wish to book direct at Warwick Le Lagon who have a special rate of VT23,000 plus VAT twin share including breakfast.

of serious golfers as a hidden treasure in New Zealand, the 18 hole, par 70 Omaha Beach Golf Club is less than an hour’s drive from central Auckland or an hour and a half from Auckland International Airport, but a world away from the frenetic pace of the city. It’s a links style resort course, crafted by its designers to make the most of its stunning seaside location and the gentle, undulating roll of the rural landscape into which it neatly sits. Bordered by the sea on one side and a natural estuary on the other, it is a course that offers some unique and pleasant surprises as you travel around it; a Totara Grove adjacent to one hole, a stand of Kaihikatea providing shelter to a boardwalk that delivers you to another, and with the estuary itself providing a new landscape, and challenge, as you progress around the course.Significant work has gone into Omaha over the last five years to deliver a near all seasons course that is now gaining growing recognition for its stunning beauty as much as its challenges for all levels of golfer. Which means we can promise at least two things: the warmest of welcomes and a day to remember. www.omahagolf.co.nz

GOLF NORTHLAND LEAD THE WAY GOLF Northland have announced an exciting new partnership with the Regional Sports Trust (RST), Sport Northland. The agreement, the first of its kind in New Zealand, will see both parties work closely together to deliver outcomes aligned with the New Zealand Golf National Community Golf Plan. Representatives from Golf Northland, Sport Northland and New Zealand Golf met to adjust the national plan in a collaborative effort to generate a plan representative of the Northland region. Moving forward the three parties will work together to deliver outcomes in the areas of Membership, Participation, Coaching, Club Support, Volunteering, Partnerships and Facilities. Eric Scott, Golf Northland Executive Officer notes “It is an exciting time for Golf in Northland. We are very happy to be working with Sport Northland and look forward to driving the game forward and growing it in our region.” A global trend has seen traditional golf membership declining at an alarming rate. Northland has not been isolated from these trends. “We see our partnership with Sport Northland as a big step towards addressing the issues golf is facing at the moment” notes Scott. NORTHLANDER’S CLAIM BREAM BAY TITLES NORTHLAND golfer Luke Brown (The Pines) has his second win on the New Zealand Order of Merit in nine months after winning the Northpine Bream Bay Classic at Waipu on Sunday July 5th. Conditions throughout the weekend were tough with rain late on the opening day and strong winds throughout demanding a lot of the players. Brown, a regular in the Northland side in recent year’s secured his first Classic title by one shot with rounds of 72, 68 and 74 to finish at two under par. The 20 year old lefty was forced to sit and wait with the club house lead for nearly an hour as the final groups made their way in, Northland team mate Kadin Neho (Whangarei) leading heading into the final round and playing in the last group being his main challenger. Some uncharacteristic mistakes by Neho on the closing stretch however saw Brown’s lead hold up by the narrowest of margins. The winner of the Masters Division was Michael Barltrop of Royal Auckland who shot 225, with runner up Mike Leeper of Omaha on 229 and the Ladies Division was won by Kylie Jacoby, also 225 for the three rounds – her home club being Waipu Golf Club (daughter of the major sponsor Northpine) with Krystal Hu of Gulf Harbour in second place with 240.
HARBOUR SWEEP NORTHERN BATTLE IT was a tough day at the office for a youthful Northland side that ran into a North Harbour side in fine form at a superbly presented Mangawhai Golf Club on Sunday July 12.. The Harbour side ran out emphatic winners across the grades with just the under 19 boys and under 19 girls teams featuring in the trophy ceremony after drawing their matches. With a number of players unavailable in the lead up to the match selectors took the opportunity to blood a number of new players with an eye to the future with all acquitting themselves well and being competitive in their matches.

Women's Teams Tournament
For the senior women 15-year-old Soktaera Sean (Northland) playing number three in her senior debut stood out by halving her match. In the senior men’s team that was narrowly defeated 6-4, Lee Newman (Mangawhai) made the most of his local knowledge with an emphatic win. He was joined in the winner’s circle by captain Lee Neumann (Northland), Sheldon Kearns (Waipu) and Kadin Neho (Whangarei). From the masters Denise Pilbrow (Waipu) picked up a big win playing at two for the women’s side that went down 3-1 while Iain Power (Northland), Peter Bone (Whangarei) and Shaun O’Shea (Sherwood Park) were winners for the men who went down by a margin of 5-3. In the junior ranks the under 16 boys team were all making their debut at this level. All were giving away more than 10 shots on handicap to their more experienced opposition but to their credit the boy’s attitude never faltered throughout and showed plenty of promise for the future. Notable performances came from Chris Shepherd (Whangarei) who emerged with a half playing number one while Tyler Parkinson (Northland) also picked up six of a possible eighteen points. The under 19 boys drew 2-2 with their opponents, captain Julian Fowler (Northland) and Daniel Millett (Northland) picking up wins while the under 19 girls drew 1.5-1.5 following a win to Danielle Ngakuru (Northland) and a half to Setiny Pheng (Sherwood Park).
TARTAN AMBROSE TOURNAMENT THE Tartan Ambrose is a unique event to Waipu Golf Club. A 9 hole Ambrose was held in the afternoon of June 28, with a meal (and warming whiskey!) to follow, the Clubhouse buzzing with ‘scottishness’. Winners were ‘The Heartless Four”, and the best dressed team went to ‘Men in Skirts”. Lots of tartan was on display, and it was great to see non-golfer teams having a great time.
WAIPU LADIES WIN! THE winner of the Northland Ladies Pennants for 2015 was the Waipu team of Lyn Causer, Catherine Jenkins, Julie Gordon and Mary Love, who battled hard at Waitangi on 29th June to win the Northland mid week pennants competition from Kaitaia.
to America in August to take up a golf scholarship at a university in West Virginia. Braden was a member of the WBHS team which won the World Schools Golf Challenge in Thailand in 2013, as well as the team that won the Northland Secondary Schools challenge two years running. Good luck Braden!

Contested between 18 teams throughout the Waikato region. Teams of 4 women played an all 4 scores count format for the 2015 Women’s Weekend Pennants Competition. It was the team representing Ngahinepouri Golf Club who came out on top over the 4 round competition. Round 1 was played at Cambridge Golf Club 19/04/2015 in which Te Kowhai took an early 2 shot lead over the rest of the competition. A combined total of 299 would see them lead Pirongia by 2 shots, Hamilton by 3 shots and Ngahinepouri by 8 shots. Round 2 played at Waikare Golf Club 24/05/2015 was again won by Te Kowahi after posting the competition low score of 298, 10 shots clear of nearest competitor Waitomo on this day. Home advantage would see Waikare sneak into 3rd place for the day, one shot ahead of Ngahinepouri and Ngaruawahia respectively. Round 3 saw a trip to Matamata for all 18 teams. The scoring suggested a tough day at the office for the travelling teams as Matamata took full advantage of being at home, posting a combined winning score of 300. This was 13 shots clear of second placed Horsham Downs. Tahuna were 3rd on 316 and the steady Ngahinepouri were on 317. The biggest surprise on the day came from competition leaders Te Kowhai who had gone from hero to zero with a combined score of 344 giving 44 shots back to Matamata on the day. Believe it or not Te Kowhai would still find themselves in a tie for the lead going into the final round at Pirongia. The 4th and final round at Pirongia 28/06/2015 was won by the consistent Ngahinepouri side who posted a combined score of 304. this was 1 shot clear of the team from South Waikato, and 2 shots clear of third placed Horsham Downs. Competition co-leaders Te Kowhai would post a score of 314 which would leave them 10 shots shy of overall winners Ngahinepouri. Second place was the Te Kowhai team and in third was the team from Tahuna. The four round combined totals (Top 5) were as follows:
1st Place: Ngahinepouri: 1245 2nd Place:Te Kowhai: 1255 3rd Place: Tahuna: 1257 4th Place: South Waikato: 1258 5th Place: Horsham Downs: 1256 Congratulations to all the round winners (as follows) Round 1: Te Kowhai Round 2: Te Kowhai Round 3: Matamata Round 4: Ngahinepouri

CATS OF TAURANGA: ENOUGH MICE, TIME FOR A BIRDIE By Stuart Whitaker/BOP TIMES CATS of Tauranga is an occasional feature focusing on local kitties with interesting stories to tell. This week, Stuart Whitaker met two cats with a great handicap. Feline friends greet players at the end of their rounds at Tauranga Golf Club. Sometimes they head out on to the course to keep players company. And sometimes they just do their own thing.
The two cats – Birdie (pictured above with Janice Jeffs and Sandra Cooney), who is a ginger female, and Pete a tabby male (pictured below) – were bought to solve a problem, mice.
Now, if they’re not part of the furniture, they are certainly often seen on it. “We got them from the SPCA,” says club manager Michelle Towersey. “We got them about two and a half years ago. We had a mouse problem – members were seeing them in the light fittings.” Bay of Plenty Golf chief executive Chris McAlpine went to the SPCA and came back saying if the club bought a cat, he would get one too, so they would each have company. Pete was named after a well-liked member, Pete Anderson, who died the week he arrived at the club as a kitten. He is a bit of a ladies’ man and makes a beeline for a lap when the ladies come into the clubhouse after a round. “He also hops in a cart and rides away ‘til he’s had enough, then jumps out,” she says. “When he was a kitten he used to hop in the [golf] bags and ride in them.” They are also not above chasing players’ golf balls around on the practice green just outside the clubhouse. The cats come and go as they please through a cat door and the club’s alarm system has had to be made pet-friendly.
GOLF: TOUR PRO A BONUS FOR TE PUKE CLUB By Peter White/BOP Times TE PUKE Golf Club may well be the biggest winners when the new Tauranga Eastern Link expressway opened in early August. ern Bay residents to join. Club manager Scott Evans says the new expressway will be a game-changer for them. “We are offering 30 per cent off normal memberships, called the Expressway Special, and we sold five in the first week,” Evans said. “We are hoping to add 50 members to the just 350 full-time playing members we have. That is why you can always get on out here.” The Te Puke course is one of the best prepared in the Bay of Plenty, renowned for particularly good greens. In October the prestigious Garrard Shield, played for between the top male amateurs from Bay of Plenty, Waikato, Auckland and Northland, will be hosted by Te Puke for the first time. The appointment of touring pro Jared Pender to join resident club professional Nicholas Davy is another positive for the club. Pender, 32, grew up in Tauranga but is now resident in Paengaroa. He has been chasing his dream on the Australasian Tour, and further afield, for seven years. There have been good days on tour, with two top 10 finishes at the NZPGA and victories on the Sunshine Coast Tour in Australia and New Zealand ProAms, but it has been tough keeping the bills at bay. He will keep playing the Australasian Tour tier-two, four round events in the summer and will tee it up at the Isuzu Queensland Open in mid-August. But now he has the security of building a career at Te Puke. Pender’s life on the road on smaller tours is a million miles away from that of his former Bay of Plenty teammate Danny Lee on the US PGA Tour. “People don’t know how hard it is without someone paying your bills. The money you play for is not big enough and you can’t really justify it unless you are winning or coming top five in the big events,” Pender said. “I’ve been lucky with the support from EZGO but it has not been easy. Who knows what is going to happen in the next year or two, but I am happy to continue what
I am doing because I am really enjoying it out here.” Pender started at Te Puke last November and has loved every minute of it. “I enjoy giving lessons and the people out here are passionate about their golf. I am not playing golf six hours a day but working and doing a bit of practice when I can.”
WHICH GOLF CLUB IS THE “BEST IN THE EASTERN BAY”? OHOPE Golf Club will again host the EBOP Interclub Golf Challenge, an exciting event first set up in 2009 to give local Eastern Bay Golf Club’s the chance to earn bragging rights as to who’s the “Best in the Bay!” Played On Sunday, 6th September. Each course is quite different and we are very fortunate in the Eastern Bay to have five distinct styles of Golf courses, each with its own merits. The Challenge provides an opportunity for each Club to choose their best team of “Stabbie” players and match then against the other 4 clubs. The format allows for an aggregate team stableford combining both men’s and women’s scores. The major prize, again generously sponsored by the Golfer Pacific magazine, goes to the winning club team, however to allow for plenty of supporters, the field will include many other club members with everyone having a chance to win one of the individual meat pack prizes. This challenge has been contested each year on the 1st Sun in September [Fathers Day] with the initial winners in 2009 being the host club Ohope, who retained the right to host it again in 2010 when again they were the winners. After that it was decided to circulate the hosting rights around the clubs with Opotiki hosting it in 2011, then Te Teko in 2012 and Kawerau in 2013. In each case the “home” club advantage prevailed until 2014 when Whakatane were the hosts but the Kawerau team proved to strong on the day! This year’s host Ohope are hoping to return to their winning ways while you can be sure that Kawerau will make a determined bid to make it 3 in a row!
WINNERS AT TURANGI THE Winners of the Turangi Golf Club MidWeek Club Championship Simpson Trophy are: Christine Millward for the women and Terry Wilson for the Men. The Club runs a Top Dog Challenge each month and the current holders of this Trophy are: Julie McCarthy, Fran McCarthy, Keith Aldridge and Dennis Butterworth.
HENRY IS ONE TO WATCH WHAKATANE Golf Club is immensely proud of our junior golfer Henry Spring. Henry, aged 16, recently represented New Zealand at the World Junior Teams Competition in Tokyo, Japan, finishing as the highest ranked New Zealand male. And he has recently won the New South Wales Under 18 State Championship Title to go with the Queensland title he won earlier. He is looking forward to competing in his home course tournament the Bay Of Plenty Open 72 hole Championship from July 31 to Aug 1. A golfer to watch for the future.

over the years but about five years ago I couldn’t swing a golf club anymore,” says the 46-year-old former Hawke’s Bay representative after an enviable competitive career that took him to the heights of the Lion Foundation Interprovincial men’s team matchplay tournaments. “I spent two years doing nothing so I was getting a bit bored,” says Hall who was a rep from 1986 to 2008, including a four-year stint with Manawatu/Wanganui senior men’s rep side for four years in the 1990s. “I definitely took a while to get over it because it was a sport I had been playing since I was 12. That’s all I did at the weekends,” says Hall whose mother, Lynne, introduced him to hackers’ paradise. “I used to play in eight or nine New Zealand amateur events so it took a while to get my head around not being able to play.” The grants officer with the legal aid unit of the Department of Justice in Napier, who went on to dutifully replace his divots at

one interprovincials and was a reserve in three others, didn’t despair. The former Havelock North High School pupil didn’t have to look far to find his new competitive fix. He eventually reconciled the end of an era with no regrets after taking stock of his accomplishments. That included rubbing shoulders on the fairway and exchanging scorecards with golfing royalty such as Phil Tataurangi and David Smail in their amateur days. “They are big professionals now so I beat them sometimes and lost to them other times. “You always look back and think you could be better,” he says mindful he was caught up in an era when having a few drinks with his mates took precedence over what the contemporary crop of amateurs do – take a more professional approach. “I gave it a decent crack so I’m pretty happy.” It was simply time to turn to his father, Bob Hall, who is the president of the Havelock North Bowling Club, for some inspiration. “I really enjoyed playing alongside dad who is a very good bowler and was a Hawke’s Bay rep,” says Hall who took to his new sport with aplomb. Within the first year, he made the Bay junior men’s rep team while a member for two years at the Kia Toa Bowling Club. The golfer, who collected numerous East Coast Championship, Hawke’s Bay Championship HB Golf Club and Hastings Golf Club strokeplay titles in an almost twodecade existence as a top-10 men’s amateur, was beginning to etch his name on bowls silverware. “I relate bowling to putting,” says Hall who was a plus 1.9 handicapper at the peak of his golfing career before signing off as a scratchie as a member of the Bay and Hastings clubs. “Putting is all about pace and line so delivering bowls is all about that.” For Hall, bowls can be as competitive as he wants it to be. He’s “jumping right into it” rather than trying to tame his instincts of pushing boundaries in the sporting arena. After five years of compulsory existence in the junior ranks, he is embracing every discipline the code offers – singles, pairs, triples and fours – with the same zest as when he planted his tee on the golfing mound before launching dimpled titanium balls into orbit. Rolling out the mat on the manicured lawns with such enterprise has already landed him two junior men’s singles club crowns for Kia Toa and Havelock North and

just as many men’s pairs clubs titles for the same establishments. In his maiden year at Kia Toa, he became singles champion as well as the fours. Last month, he claimed the centre championof-champion pairs bragging rights with his father. “I’m trying to be as good as I can be,” he says, adding he puts in a fair amount of training time into bowls, especially over summer but also absorbing a fair bit simply by watching more experienced players. Hall is single but has a 23-year-old son, Jamie, who works for Wellington City Council while finishing university studies. He is mindful many people perceive bowls as a sport for the oldies “but there’s enough challenge for the young to get into it”. The emergence of young champions at national level in the mould of Canterbury’s Katelyn Inch and Napier-born sisters Mandy and Angela Boyd, to name a few, lends credence to his theory. Hall hasn’t been following the pursuits of Bay amateur golf but notes the senior men’s rep team were languishing near the tail of the interprovincials. He ponders on whether that is the result of an exodus of senior players but points out that, in his day, several nationally ranked golfers kept them in good stead. His most memorable time was at the interpovincials at Coringa Golf Club, Christchurch, in 2003 with former teammates Darryn Turley, Henry Heather and Phil Wedd. “It was an enjoyable time with those guys even though we did not make the semis,” he says, adding he had played alongside Turley at Manawatu/Wanganui as well. Hastings PGA professional and former NZ Academy coach Brian Doyle and Ben Warren were his most influential coaches. “Ben was at Sharpies when I was working there and he was excellent. “Brian was Hawke’s Bay coach over the years so he was always there and he’s been doing well in the junior men’s Hawke’s Bay bowls team,” Hall says of Doyle who has taken up the lawn code because of a dodgy back while coaching at Golflands in Hastings. “He brings a golfing side to bowls as well.”

In third place overall was Marton who won their final match against Manawatu 4 – 2. While Marton were tied for points and games with Feilding, the difference between those teams was just half a hole point for the entire season. Congratulations to Rangatira.

WHAT a great year for the Rangatira Golf Club womens’ teams, winning 3 out of the 4 pennant competitions. Having already won the Weekend Pennant competition, Rangatira were also in a good position to win the Silver and District competitions in the final rounds played at Rangitikei on Monday 6 July. Heading into the final round of Silver Pennant, Rangatira just needed to defeat Palmerston North, to win the competition, and they did by a margin of 5 games to
The final playoff games were played in the District Pennant competitions. The match to decide the overall winner was played between Manawatu and Rangatira, with Rangatira prevailing 3 – 1. Those teams qualified for the final by winning their respective sections through the round robin. The battle for third and fourth was won by Marton over Eketahuna. for winning Silver, District and Weekend competitions. Marton was the winner in the Championship Pennant. And for the record Rangatira did not have a team in the Championship grade, which means it was 3 from 3 for the Rangatira teams. A great achievement!
CHAMPIONSHIP AND WEEKEND PENNANT SUMMARY CHAMPIONSHIP and Weekend Pennants involved a new format for 2015. Played 5 -6 July, the new part was having each round consist of foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon playing the same team. The retained part was teams of two and Championship matches off the stick and Weekend off handicap
It was great to seee 9 teams involved in both Pennants. A couple of clubs combined so they could enter a team for Championship. This allowed Rangitikei and Castlecliff to once again enter a team. Eketahuna and Pahiatua also combined as did Taihape, Foxton and Linton Camp (TFL or Three Foxy Ladies). The inclusion of foursomes followed by singles matches seemed to be enjoyed by most and did bring in great team spirit. The Weekend competition was fierce and results were able to go anyway with the maximum of 5 points per round available but also bye rounds to be taken into consideration. After the 7th round there were 5 teams with a 3 ½ point difference. After round 8 the same 5 teams had a 3 point difference. Taihape were ahead of Rangatira by ½, Marton were ½ behind that, but their final round was a bye, and Feilding and Pahiatua were another 1 point behind each respectively. The final round was therefore anybody’s. Unfortunately Wanganui could not field a team with the terrible flooding they experienced and defaulted to Rangatira giving them the full 5 points. Feilding also won the full 5 points against Palmerston North and Pahiatua managed a win with 4 points over Taihape 1 point. The final result was therefore Rangatira on 29, with Feilding moving up to 2nd on 27.5 and Pahiatua and Taihape on 25.5. Congratulations to Rangatira and although you never want to win on a default it was great to see all matches played in
good spirits. The Championship competition was not as tight towards the end as after round 7 Marton were 7 points ahead of Rangitikei/ Castlecliff who were ½ a point ahead of Levin B and Manawatu 5 points behind that. These top 3 teams managed the full 5 points in their 8th round while Manawatu failed to gain a point and with Palmerston North gaining 5 points these two teams were equal 4th. The final round had Marton with the bye and already 7 points ahead and therefore could not be beaten. The quest was therefore on for the minor placings. Levin B came in with the 5 points while Rangitikei/Castlecliff gained 2.5 and Manawatu the full quota with Palmerston North 2.5. The Champions of the Championship were therefore Marton with Levin B finishing 2nd, Rangitikei/Castlecliff 3rd and Manawatu 4th.

SHANDON 2015 LANDSDOWNE CHAMPIONS SHANDON’S premier women’s team have retained the Landsdowne Trophy won in 2014, the symbol of supremacy in 36 hole Wellington Womens golf, with a strong finish to the season. Closest rivals Titahi Bay, lead by Te Rongapai Clay, held a slim lead throughout the season, Shandon losing a close battle 4-5 at Titahi Bay and winning at home 6-3, this 2 point advantage being key by the competitions end. With two rounds remaining and having accounted for the Julieanne Alvarez lead Manor Park at Manor Park 5.5-3.5, Shandon played Manor Park at home and with Alvarez away on International duty posted a superb 8.5-0.5 win to leave the team needing a minimum 5-4 away win over Carterton/Martinborough to again be champions. On a difficult wet and windy day the team posted a 3-0 morning foursomes win
and went on to win the singles 5-1 for an impressive 8-1 win, to tally 58.5 season points to Titahi’s 55.0 with Royal Wellington finishing strongly in 3rd position on 48.0. The team was again lead by the astute captaincy of Suzeanne Jones, who recorded only 1 foursomes loss all season. Missing from last year’s winning team were Rahira Ellison and Rachel Edmond, but back into the side was the impressive Lucy Davis and debuting in the 2nd half of the competition was the 11 year old Darae Chung. With Anita Harkerrs, Anita Lawson and Kim Weber-Swain along with Jones from the 2014 side, Shandon were worthy Champions in 2015 and look like the side to beat in 2016 and beyond.
LEVIN GOLFER’S FIRST PRO WIN COMES AT MANOR PARK Contributed by Paul Gueorgieff LEVIN golfer Tyler Hodge posted his first win as a professional when taking out the Manor Park Pro Open played on July 7. Hodge, 20, only became a professional about three months ago and the Manor Park Pro Open was just his fifth tournament since giving up his amateur status. The previous four tournaments had been all been on the newly-formed Kiwi Pro Tour of which the Manor Park event was also part of. Hodge had scores of three-under par 68 on each day at Manor Park to win by two strokes from Manor Park professional Gareth Paddison.
First prize was worth $3000 and Hodge said that would help him build on his professional career. “My ambition for the first 12 months is to earn a full playing card somewhere, anywhere,” Hodge said. “I am not going to be too picky for the first year. I just want to get into the swing of things as a professional golfer.” Hodge’s next tournaments will be the final two events on the Kiwi Pro Tour. They will be held at Miramar and Paraparmumu over the next few weeks. This is the first year of the Kiwi Pro Tour which comprises 10 tournaments. The tour is being organised by Hawke’s Bay professional Peter O’Donnell and his parents. They plan to expand the tour to 20 tournaments next year. Hodge’s win at Manor Park was aided by a costly mistake by Paddison who played the wrong ball on the second-last hole and therefore incurred a two-shot penalty – the difference between equal first and second. It was Hodge’s ball that Paddison played in error. They were playing in the same group and Hodge played a provisional ball off the tee when he thought his first ball may have gone out of bounds. But he subsequently found his first ball was in play and was unaware Paddison had hit his provisional ball until afterwards. “I was over the other side in the trees playing my first ball, “ Hodge said. “I just presumed someone would pick up my provisional.” Hodge, winner of the Wellington Stroke-

NELSON FESTIVAL OF GOLF TOURNAMENT INFORMATION MAY 2016: This tournament has received glowing reviews from many of the players who have enjoyed playing in the previous events. Lots of those players returned to compete in the tournament again, which is the highest compliment available to any tournament organisers. Previously held in October, the organisers have shifted the event for more settled weather. The next “Nelson Festival of Golf” will be held in May 2016, from Monday 2nd May through to Friday 6th May. Nelson Festival of Golf – The Courses: Day 1 & Day 4: Nelson Golf Club
Greenacres Golf Course enjoys stunning scenery from almost every part of the course. This Best Island golf course features a great layout that will test your golfing skills to the full. Christchurch Golf Club) had a narrow win shooting 66 gross – Jordan shooting 67 himself. The pair won from three others who finished on 67 – Dominic Brettkelly & Tom Parker, Oscar & James Cadenhead and Phil Bungard & James Robb.
TIGHT FINISH AT JUNIOR TOURNAMENT THE Canterbury Junior Tournament was held in initially cool but then fine sunny conditions at Rangiora in early July. The course was in excellent condition and scoring was generally very consistent, no more so than in the Grade 1 Boys where the top gross score of 74 was shared by five players, Dominic Brettkelly ( Hororata), Callum Doak (Ellesmere), Kazuma Kobori (Rangiora), Tom McLorinan (Kaiapoi) and Rory Williamson (Russley). Dominic was the eventual overall gross winner on countback from Kazuma second, again after a number of countbacks. Callum won the overall net with a 66 from Rory in second place with a 69. The Grade 2 Boys was a clear cut affair with Terrace Down’s William Robb winning with a stunning net 62 from Joseph Hall (Weedons) 71, Fergus Williamson (Russley) 72 on a countback from Tom Faulks (Russley). Amy Weng (Russley) was the winner of the Girl’s Grade with a net 73.

NEW HOMES AND YOGA CENTRE COMING TO AWARDWINNING MILLBROOK RESORT LUXURY home and land packages on offer at Queenstown’s Millbrook Resort tell the continuing success story of a development boom driven by increased business confidence. The Pioneers is an exciting new eighthome hamlet to be positioned on four elevated north-facing terraces overlooking the resort’s Coronet Nine golf course. Designed by architects Mason and Wales and complemented by award-winning landscape design from Baxter Design Group, the eight two plus media room or three bedroom single level homes are priced from $1.5m. This latest release was offered to the public this week and Property and Development Manager Ben O’Malley said one of the homes had already been snapped up by one Millbrook Country Club member. Members are typically offered a ‘’first opportunity to purchase’’ for each new release. “As with all our development releases over the past five years, the level of interest in The Pioneers has been very pleasing, thanks to Millbrook’s proven track record as a visionary and quality developer,” he said. “In the past three years Millbrook itself has constructed 18 home and land packages and developed 42 new lots over two subdivisions at a total construction cost of approximately $31m and we continue to expand with the purchase of former farm land on our western boundary. In addition to that there have been around another 14 private homes built at an approximate cost of $24m. “The market is showing no signs of letting up with regards to families, holiday home owners or lifestyle investors, all of whom recognise and appreciate Millbrook’s very unique qualities. “Ever-increasing numbers are choosing to make Millbrook their permanent home, which means that community spirit combined with our reputation for quality and ultimate lifestyle living is making the resort THE place to live in the Southern Lakes district.” The latest homes are designed to maximise plentiful year-round sun, stunning panoramic views and privacy, nestling easily into the surrounding landscape. Each of these desirable single level homes, designed by respected architects Mason and Wales along with kitchen and bathroom specialist Ingrid Geldof Design, has a delightful combination of superbly proportioned living spaces, verandas, outside terraces and secure garaging. Two floor plan options are available for seven of the homes within the same footprint with flexibility around making the third bedroom into a media room or office, 26 GOLFER PACIFIC August 2015
while one has a site-specific floorplan to take advantage of expansive views to the west. Talented interior designer Sue Nauman has created two design options for the homes so they can be bought as a complete turnkey package.
“They’re in a magnificent location where we’ve always had plans to offer some single level homes at a different price point to others we’ve released recently,” said Mr O’Malley. “Our long-term strategy is to continue to offer small releases of a wide range of home and land packages plus land-only sites to build the Millbrook community while maintaining our wide open ‘green’ spaces and upgraded golf course facilities.” Meanwhile work has already started on an 82m2 extension to the ground floor of the existing Health and Fitness centre to cater for increased class numbers. The new space has been designed as a dedicated yoga and pilates room but can also be used for other classes and personal training sessions. Mr O’Malley said currently classes were held in the gym but were not compatible with general gym use. “Gym users want the place cooler than the yoga users do, and yoga by nature is a quiet and contemplative activity and so someone pounding along on a treadmill or bench pressing weights in the same room is not a great mix. Class numbers have been steadily growing so we’re catering for that demand.” The project is expected to be completed in early September. Boasting many awards and accolades, Millbrook Resort is renowned the world over for its exceptional accommodation, spa, restaurants, golf course and property, facilities which are open to Millbrook members, hotel guests and to the public as day visitors. Millbrook currently comprises 27 golf holes with one full 18-hole course available at any time using a mixture of the three nines – the Arrow Nine, Remarkables Nine and newer Coronet Nine. The resort is owned by the Japan-based Ishii family which bought the original Millbrook land in 1988, and it has been under development since then. Opened to the public in 1993 the Ishii family’s ultimate vision is to develop “the best golf and lifestyle resort in the world”.
OTAGO BLUE WINS FINAL OTAGO Blue beat St Clair 4-2 in the metropolitan senior A final on Saturday 18 July and will go forward to the provincial pennant finals in South Otago on October 18. The match was played in bitterly cold weather on the St Clair course but the tough conditions failed to prevent some low scoring and three of the Otago Bombers team were under par when their matches finished. An unbeaten St Clair team was dominant throughout the series with seven wins and three draws while the Balmacewen golfers came to the final after posting seven wins, two losses and two draws. But this meant nothing on Saturday, as the winner of the head to head final claimed the honours for the 2015 series. Otago’s Duncan Croudis won the battle of the No 1 players, beating Michael Ormandy with three holes to spare. Croudis turned three up after parring all of the holes on the outward nine and went four ahead with a birdie 4 on the dogleg 14th. No 3 Nick Borren was also under par, beating Ryan Bellamy 4 and 2 after a tight front nine. The pair turned square. Borren took the lead with a birdie 4 on the 10th and looked set to go two ahead with a gimme birdie on the 11th green. But Bellamy holed out from a greenside bunker to halve the hole while Borren won the following hole with a par. Both players birdied the par 3 13th but Borren forged further ahead, winning the 14th and 16th with pars to close out the match. James Anstiss posted Otago’s third win at No 4, at the expense of the evergreen Brent McEwan, after turning one ahead with birdies on the first and ninth holes. McEwan squared the match with a par 4 on the 12th hole but Anstiss won 13 and 15 with pars to go two up. The match finished on the 16th green when McEwan made a bogey 4. Blue captain Brandon Hodgson beat St Clair No5 Stephen Hitchcox 3 and 2 to give Otago the required four wins. Hodgson was two ahead at the turn but Hitchcox reduced the deficit to one with an eagle 3 on the par 5 10th hole. A bogey 5 on the12th put Hitchcox two behind again and the writing was on the wall when Hodgson made a birdie 3 on the 15th to go dormie three up. St Clair No 2 Jakob Bleach continued his good form by beating Tyrone Ratahi on the 17th green. In a tight tussle, Bleach turned two up but the match was square when Ratahi won the first two holes on the back nine. Bleach (16) won 12 and 14 to go two up but lost the 15th and was one up with two holes to play. He finished the match in style with a birdie 3 on the 17th to take the honours. At No 6, St Clair’s Chris Snow played a captain’s knock, beating Daniel Elder in a tight tussle which was tied after the first 13 holes. A determined Snow finished strongly, winning the next three holes, with birdies on the 14th and 16th, to win 3 and 2.
2015 CHAMPIONS OF OTAGO AT CHISHOLM LINKS THE 2015 Golf Otago men’s “Champions of Otago” tournament will be hosted by Chisholm Links on Sunday 16th of August. The event is an 18 hole stableford, gross and nett sections, for club teams of 3, comprising of the current Senior, Intermediate & Junior champions from each club. The focus is on having as many of Otago’s clubs as possible participate, so the rules are flexible enough to ensure that clubs with only two championship sec-
tions (or even one) can still enter a team of 3 players. Where current champions are unavailable, clubs may enter a substitute player, bi it the runner up, top qualifier or whatever..... Information and entry forms have been sent to all Otago clubs and entry must be via the clubs, or with the authority of the club that players are representing. Entry is limited to one team per club. Make sure your club is involved in this very popular tournament. To enter see Otago Golf association link. http://www.golfotago.co.nz/2015/news/featured/2015champions-of-otago-at-chisholm-links/
2015 OTAGO FOURSOMES AT CHISHOLM PARK ENTRIES are open for the 2015 Otago Foursomes Championships. The event, resurrected in 2013 after a 13 year recess, has been a popular fixture at Chisholm Park for the past couple of years and is likely to draw a full field again this year.
