Rio Olympics: Go Lydia, go G

olf will be at the Olympics next year for the first time in more than a century. And that is as good a reason as any for golf fans to attend the 2016 Games at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. But for New Zealand golf fans there is even greater reason. That reason comes in the form of Lydia Ko. She is a top chance for a gold medal. Many of us have probably not seen Ko play live and there is probably not many greater stages than an Olympic Games to do so. Danny Lee and Ryan Fox are the likely two candidates to represent New Zealand in the men’s division of the golf at Rio. It would be nice to think either could rise to the occasion but there is no question Ko is going to be a genuine chance of winning gold. I have given this subject much thought and come to the conclusion of a stunning barrier

that could be carried around the course in support of Lydia. The banner would read: Go Lydia, go. Yes, I know. You are thinking, wow, how did I think of such a stunning banner. Well, I’ll have to admit it’s not original. It’s something I have dragged up from my past as a horse racing reporter. It dates back to the 1979 Wellington Derby at Trentham. The winner was Holy Toledo and the winning jockey was Linda Jones. She was at the time blazing a trail for women jockeys and her win saw her become the first woman in the world to win a derby. On hand for the win was renowned Melbourne racing journalist Jack Elliot. Minutes after the win Elliot was on the phone to his newspaper, dictating his copy. Elliot had a booming voice and it was easy to overhear his dictation. Go, Linda go, he

said the Trentham crowd roared. Elliot had watched the race from the same press room as myself and I remember thinking I had heard no such roar from the Trentham crowd. But that was of no concern to Elliot. After he hung up the phone he proudly proclaimed his story was destined for the front page and that he just “made the girl famous’’. In the case of Ko she is already famous. And if she was to add to that fame at Rio, it would be nice to be there. The last time golf was part of the Olympics was in 1904. That year 77 players took part, of which 74 were Americans. But it was a god, damn Canadian, by the name of George Lyon, who won the gold medal. Actually I have had a good idea regarding a Rio banner. It could read: Ko Lydia, ko.

NEWS The chance to have your say on New Zealand’s top golf courses

Ryan Fox and Dustin Johnson on a par

GOLF professional Andrew Whiley is seeking assistance from golfers around the country to rank their favourite golf courses. Whiley, a columnist for Golfer Pacific and a member of the New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association, has compiled a regional golf ranking list for the last four years. This year he is seeking an input from any golfer in the country. The rankings will be based on regions similar to the Super15 rugby regions and each golfer will be asked to rank their top six golf courses, favourite nine-hole course and what they consider as their hidden gem. Last year it was golf professionals, golf industry people and former representative golfers that provided the rankings. But this time the club golfer can have their say. Every club golfer enjoys debating their favourite golf courses with fellow golfers on a regular basis and now it is their time to share their rankings with golfers from their own regions and around the country. More importantly, it will be great to see if golf courses that don’t normally get recognised actually being listed as a special place to play. Golfers will be asked to factor in layout, design variety, memorability, aesthetics, conditioning and ambience but will just need to rank their top six courses. Whiley will also be intrigued to see what names appear in the categories of nine-hole and hide gem courses. The regional golf rankings will be run on-line from September 20 through to October 31 and will be accessed through www. golfrankings.co.nz. So what are your favourite golf courses?

USTIN JOHNSON looked headed for victory at the halfway stage of the British Open. He was in the lead at 10 under par and commentators were saying the notorious bunkers at St Andrews were of little concern to Johnson because of his great length off the tee. It was also easy to jump to the conclusion that victory for the American would be the appropriate redemption after he let the US Open a month earlier slip through his fingers. But it wasn’t to be — yet again. Johnson dropped back through the field over the final two rounds of the British Open and ended up 49th. So what has this got to do with Ryan Fox? The answer is that Fox also finished 49th in the British Open. Johnson earned 26,000 euros and so did Fox. And you have just read the surnames of both in the same sentence. That in itself says something. And for Fox it meant something. He suddenly found himself not out of place in one of the world’s greatest golf tournaments. His score of 67 in the final round was the second-best on the last day. But it is what happened next that provided the significance of what occurred in Scotland. Fox headed across the English Channel to play a tournament on the Challenge Tour, the secondary circuit to the European Tour. He set a hot early pace when smashing the course record with a brilliant nine-under par 62 in the first round of the Le Vaudreuil Challenge in northern France. He maintained his lead after the second and third rounds with scores of 67 and 68. Fox went into the final round with a threeshot lead but the chasers were right on his tail when he went through the first nine holes at two over par. A brief rain delay did not help matters but Fox steadied the ship on the final nine holes at even par, which included a birdie on the 18th. That gave him victory by one from home favourite Thomas Linard and saw him become the first New Zealander to win on the Challenge Tour in eight years.

The previous Kiwi to win on the Challenge Tour was Gareth Paddison who, in 2007, had also scored his win on French soil. Fox said weather conditions on the last day did not help his cause. “It was a tough day,” Fox said. “Conditions were pretty awful through the middle of the round with the rain and the wind. “But it was a great battle down the stretch with Thomas. We had four or five holes where we stood tied for the lead. “He made some unbelievable shots and I guess it made it a little easier for myself to get forward to stay one in front. “There are some tough holes out there, and I missed a couple of greens, and then got up

and down, but it doesn’t matter now, I guess. I’m just happy.’’ The win helped ease the 28-year-old away from the shadow of his father, All Black legend Grant Fox. “This trip is my first time to Europe, and I have played well. France was my dad’s favourite place to tour when he was playing with the All Blacks. “I think it’s the same for me. It’s my favourite place in the world at the moment.” The winner’s prize in France was 32,000 euros and together with his 26,000 euros from the British Open, it took his tally of earnings in a fortnight to 58,000 euros. That equates to $NZ96,000. It also equates to Ryan Fox, the golfer — not the son of an All Black.

Canadian Open No 3 for Ko, first cheque Five for NSW I junior t was Lydia Ko’s third win in the tournament but the first time she was paid. The tournament was the Canadian Pacific Open which Ko had won as an amateur in 2012 and 2013 at the ages of 15 and 16. Ko racked up her third win in the Canadian Pacific Open last month but on this occasion it was as a professional and consequently she picked up the winner’s purse of $US337,500 ($NZ511,000). It took her earnings for the season on the LPGA Tour to $US1.7 million and her career earnings on the same tour to $US3.8 million. The win was Ko’s eighth on the LPGA tour and the 12th in total since she turned professional in less than two years. But picking up the winner’s cheque was not her driving force, Ko said. “You know, really the cheque is the last thing I’m thinking about,” Ko said. “It’s great to be back in the winner’s circle, and to play good golf in front of great crowds was really one of the highlights of this week. I kind of feel like somewhat Cana-

dian. But the Canadian Women’s Open is such a great event, with the top players playing here, so, you know, every year, I have fun.’’ Ko becomes the third player to win the Canadian Open three times. The other two are Meg Mallon and Pat Bradley. But the third win was a close call, finishing the regulation 72 holes in a tie with Stacy Lewis of the United States at 12 under par. However on the first playoff hole Lewis found trouble off the tee and

with her approach. She was forced to scramble for a missed par attempt, while Ko calmly hit the fairway and green and then two-putted for victory. Added Ko: “It would have been great if I was coming down the 18th with, like, a four-shot lead like I did in 2012. “But it is what it is. Stacy played amazing today; to shoot 67 under those conditions.” Lewis forced the playoff with a five-under final round to tie Ko,

who shot an even par 72 in her final round. Ko said she had a conservative mind-set for the playoff hole. “I said, hey, you’ve just got to concentrate on your game, just one shot a time, and that’s what I tried to do. “I said, I don’t want to get too aggressive to that pin but maybe it was a little bit too safe and maybe wasn’t the best shot going in. I made a really good first putt on my normal 72nd hole, and made a good putt on the first playoff hole. If the putt was any longer for my second one, I would have been really nervous.” Ko, 18, has one more chance to become the world’s youngest woman to win a golf major. That record belongs to Morgan Pressel of the United States. She achieved her feat when taking out the 2007 Kraft Nabisco Championship in California at the age of 18 years, 10 months and nine days. Ko, born on April 24, 1997, has her last chance to beat Pressel’s record in the Evian Championship in France from September 10-13.

NZ team named for Abu Dhabi THE New Zealand team for a top Asia-Pacific tournament for amateur golfers has been named. The event is the Nomura Cup, which is a bi-annual competition rotated amongst the Asia-Pacific region. This year’s event, from October 22-25, is to be held in the United Arab Emirates at the Ya Links Golf Club in Abu Dhabi. Each team comprises four players and New Zealand’s representatives will be Joshua Munn (Manawatu), Luke Toomey (Lochiel), Tae Koh (Manukau) and Nick Voke (Manukau/ Iowa). Voke has been in contention for the event in the past but had been unavailable due to commitments to the Iowa State University in the United States. New Zealand Golf high performance manager Gregg Thorpe is confident the team will be competitive in Abu Dhabi. “This team is an experienced one and each player has shown they can compete at an international level,’’ Thorpe said. “It’s an exciting opportunity for this team to do something really special”. The last time New Zealand held the Nomura Cup was in 1995, when Russley Golf Club in Christchurch hosted the event. The Nomura Cup, which was first held in the Philippines in 1963, is conducted by the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation. Each team consists of four male players,

contesting 18 holes of strokeplay for four days. In each round, the lowest three individual scores constitutes the team’s score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team’s score for the championship. The winning team receives the Nomura Cup, which was named after Shun Nomura, the former vicepresident of the Japan Golf Association who donated the cup.

PGA Tour to remain Sky-less L

ive broadcast of the PGA Tour in the United States will continue to be internet-based for at least two more years. It was announced last month that live coverage in New Zealand of the PGA Tour would remain the domain of Coliseum Sports Media and Lightbox Sport through to the end of 2017. Coliseum took over the live coverage from subscriber telecaster Sky TV at the beginning of this year. The PGA Tour said it had been pleased with the change, according to its global media executive vicepresident Rick Anderson. “We’re encouraged by what we’ve seen with the launch of the service in New Zealand and with the work from the team at Coliseum and Lightbox Sport,” Anderson said in a press release. “We understand the transition to an internet delivered content isn’t easy for some. “But much has been done in the last six months to improve the transition and the overall experience. We look forward to delivering the same high quality service to PGA Tour fans

in New Zealand over the next two years.’’ Tim Martin of Lightbox Sport said he was delighted at the commitment of the PGA Tour. “PGA Tour Live has really improved throughout the season, ‘’ Martin said. “So we’re delighted to receive this vote of confidence from the PGA Tour. “We’re seeing a huge increase in overall subscriber numbers as well as in the number of very satisfied customers.’’ Martin said he had similar hopes for the European Tour and the LPGA. “This confirmation from PGA Tour complements the plans we have in place for the European Tour and the LPGA. “With PGA Tour online for the next few years at least, it allows us to focus even harder on delivering a great service to New Zealand golf fans. “We also remain confident of delivering a free to air schedule that will complement the online service and we expect to make an announcement on this shortly.”

Golf’s biggest party: World Masters C

elebrating 20 years, the Gold Coast World Masters Golf Championship is set to host the biggest party ever offered to golfers with 7 nights of fun and entertainment for the 600 plus participants. In true Go Golfing fashion, the celebration’s list of events includes glamorous dinners accompanied by premium beers and wines, Australia’s best comedy acts, nightly events overlooking the golf course, trivia nights and a country and western extravaganza. Festivities will culminate with a gala presentation dinner where more than $110,000 in golf and lucky draw prizes are presented. Tournament director Go Golfing Managing Director, Peter McCarthy, reveals what has made this tournament so successful and what is in store for golfers and their partners this year. “Our tournaments are about golf and fun. A golf tournament is a golf tournament. Everyone knows what to expect there, and we deliver. But it is the fun we deliver in our tournaments that blows people away.” “Our participants love the games, the social gatherings and the entertainment we put together for them. It is that memory that stays with them for years to come. It is about the friendships they’ve made and the laughs they’ve shared. And this is what Go Golfing is about and this is why so many of our participants come back again and again.” “And this year is going to be bigger than ever. It is our 20th anniversary and we want to use this milestone as a way to thank our faithful clients and sponsors, past and present, who have made this tournament such a success and wonderful experience.” The support of new major sponsor Ladbrokes has paved

The Glades and RACV Royal Pines to host this year’s tournament. Playing in his sixteenth consecutive World Masters, Jerome Ballard from Sydney’s Twin Creeks is keen to be challenged on the Gold Coast’s top four courses. “The reviews of The Pines at Sanctuary Cove from the likes of Adam Scott has me excited to be playing there for the very first time. Links Hope Island is a great layout and immaculately conditioned. I always enjoy the bent greens at The Glades and I am keen to have a crack at the revamped Royal Pines which hosts the Australian PGA and Ladies Masters.” The Ladbrokes World Masters Golf Championship is open to all male and female golfers aged 35 plus with an official golf handicap. Competition is in 15 divisions based on age and handicap and playing with golfers your own age and standard is among the tournament’s popular traditions. All golfers compete in the 4-round stableford event with ‘A’ grade golfers also eligible for the best gross. The World Masters always has outstanding prizes for the golf competition and the final night lucky draws are keenly anticipated. Eight cars, a trip to the US Masters, golf tours to international destinations have all been given away. There’s $30,000 in lucky prizes guaranteed to be won this year.

Sanctuary Cove is where Adam Scott honed his skills and still calls home and says “When I think of great golf in Australia, I think of The Pines Sanctuary Cove, a true test of the game.” Just short of 6,700 metres, the golf course meanders through 101 hectares of established pine forest and 6 large man-made lakes. NZ GOLF UPDATE

Dean Murphy

New Zealand Golf Chief Executive

Some overseas scores will soon be able to be submitted

O

ne of the core functions of New Zealand Golf is to provide a handicap system that allows for the most equitable competition possible and we continue to monitor trends and look for improvements. There are six systems being used worldwide and our system (USGA) is the most universally recognised. We completed a thorough review of our handicap system two years ago and a number of changes were identified. The most significant was to introduce the tournament score calculation which could result in a reduction in your handicap index which is illustrated by an R that follows your handicap. Some of our members think they have been identified as a player that has been manipulating their handicap but we like to describe it as a reward for good play and therefore a reduction. Our records show that there are currently 500 golfers with an R handicap which is in line with the statistics from the USGA which expects one in 200 golfers to have this reduction. However we do want clubs and players to realise that a handicap committee should still complete a peer review process and if they believe that a player is now disadvantaged due to the R handicap then they can take steps to have it removed. We will continue to monitor trends and work with club handicap committees and the below is a list that summarises our current thinking in regard to tournament scores and the reduction that can occur: Our NZ golf culture is different, we believe, to the USA

and we have a large group of members that play regular golf. That means the most recent 20 scores played in the winter results in a higher than normal handicap index, which widens the gap between the two best tournament (T) scores in the system and increases any reduction. The main group of players currently affected are those that play regularly, women and veteran players. The peer review that this handicap system relies on allows for the R to be removed and we are happy to work with club handicap committees if they believe it is disadvantaging a player. This sudden awareness of the R is providing for more regular peer review which we regard as very positive. We will work with DotGolf to identify the best way to remove an R when it is deemed inappropriate. This may be an override button. We will consider carefully our recommendations for what events qualify as tournaments in the future. We are also pleased to advise that we are about to introduce further enhancements to our system. Two of these changes will require some education and this will be well communicated in the near future but for one of these it is an exciting addition. For many years

now we have been asked about score cards from overseas being entered for handicapping and we have not had the facility within our programme to make this happen. However, this is now a reality and very soon your holiday rounds in Fiji, Queensland or on any USGA rated course around the world, will be able to be entered. The winter has ended and our courses will soon be in fine condition again. Good golfing everyone.

Our NZ golf culture is different, we believe, to the USA and we have a large group of members that play regular golf.

Andrew Whiley

Grow the game this Summer I

am consistently hearing of golf clubs complaining about where have all the golfers gone? What is New Zealand Golf doing about growing the game and how will the national association and the provincial associations help them stay financial and active? I personally think it is about time that golf clubs took some ownership and stepped up to actually help themselves with their future destiny. This means that club committee members, boards and those that have held past leadership roles in the clubs need to be involved and become proactive. Last year, I wrote a column about taking a friend to golf. Did anyone do this? Did anyone introduce a friend or family member to the game, even if that meant taking them to the driving range or having a social hit? This is a really easy way to grow the game. As you are reading this article the days are getting longer, daylight saving will soon be here and the temperatures are getting warmer, so think about who you’d like to get involved in golf. So, now back to your golf course. In the last three years has your club invested any money in promoting learn to play classes, specifically kid’s golf programmes? Has your club invested in any other initiatives to introduce potential golfers to the game? From what I have seen, I would say that less than 20 percent of the golf clubs around the country have been proactive in this way and the clubs doing most of the complaining are in the 80 percent category. New Zealand Golf and the New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association can both assist any club in New Zea-

land to grow the game. In many cases, there is access to funding through various organisations that will assist in promoting and running these programmes. The trainee golf professionals that are coming through the PGA education programme are also running some outstanding junior programmes around the country. They are graded on this as part of their studies and their interaction, passion and knowledge create some great learning environments. This education programme is seen as world class and any golf club in the country could benefit from having these talented individuals on their staff or assisting them. To create a junior programme, I would suggest that all golf clubs connect with their local intermediate and secondary schools. Does your golf club have any rela-

tionships with these schools? What is your local golf association doing in this area? Are they assisting with a golf in schools programme? If so, are they then creating a pathway into golf clubs like yours that are nearby? Do you have some members that could assist or be volunteer coaches to provide support in introducing these youngsters to the game? A successful programme will have all the pieces in place, including funding. In regards to introducing adults to the game it is about giving them an environment where they can enjoy learning, so it needs to be a fun and a social experience. I think you will be amazed how many people will turn up to give golf a go. It needs to be actively marketed in local media and it must have the support of your existing members, encouraging their friends and work colleagues to attend. Their active support is extremely important. Another key opportunity is that clubs and members need to be more flexible. Once you’ve introduced new people to the game, you need to keep them engaged and seek their involvement in your club. Many individuals drop out of golf or don’t get involved due to the large time commitment of the game. Therefore, now is the time to look at these barriers and do what you can as a club and members to remove those barriers. For example have you introduced a nine-hole league? Have you looked at flexible playing groups where you bring in and play with novice players? If we keep doing the same old, same old we will end up with the same old results which doesn’t bode well for the long term future of the game at many clubs around the country.

Becoming a golfing nation D

espite some claims to the contrary from The Netherlands, most New Zealand golfers would agree the true home of golf is Scotland, and would be aware of the contribution of the Scots in spreading the game around the world, not least in this country. So after nearly 150 years of established golf here, how do we compare with golf’s home country? Firstly, Scotland is even more densely populated with golf clubs than we are, having 593 of them compared to our 395. The Scottish clubs have a total membership of 220,000, plus 23,000 juniors. That puts them well ahead of us, by around 100 members per club. If we look at total participation rates, the balance is more equal.Eight percent of all adults in Scotland play golf, so on the face of it our overall participation rate might be higher if we factor in the 400,000 or so casual golfers in New Zealand. Economic impact measures significantly favour Scotland, with a contribution to GDP of over $NZ4 billion annually, at least four times higher than ours. This grows by a further $250 million each year the Open Championship is held in Scotland. Another key difference is the golf in schools’ programme in Scotland, which sees 80 percent of all nineyear-old primary school children go through a four to six week golf programme as part of the curriculum. Since inception, over 350,000 children have undertaken this, with around 13 percent going on to further programmes at golf clubs. All of this started from a point in 2002 when there was no schools’ programme, and no registered volunteer

coaches. The results since then, which include a team of 1200 volunteer coaches currently working with 185 PGA professionals across 300 golf clubs, can be attributed to a concerted effort by the Scottish Golf Union, the PGA and not least, the Scottish government which contributes around $1.5 million per annum to the schools’ programme. The latter’s role is particularly interesting, because they can hardly be described as coming from the right hand side of the political spectrum. They have instead had a clear vision of the economic and social benefits of golf –- no doubt helped by the successful bid for the 2014 Ryder Cup, but also with a longer term plan encompassing health improvement, life skills and direct and indirect job creation. Golf now attracts more government funding than any other sport in Scotland. Even with all this, Scottish golf still has some familiar problems: adult membership has been declining by around 1.5 percent per annum for the last 10 years. Crucially though, there is a clear correlation between the quality of management and the level of training undergone by the manager, with the rate of decline or growth in membership at a club. The long term plan is now to continue to enhance managers’ qualifications through ongoing training, with an increasing number being PGA members moving into golf club management roles. What can New Zealand learn from this, if we truly

want to become a golfing nation? Firstly, the need to plan on a long term basis to overcome the embedded problems of declining membership and competing leisure activities. Secondly, no one sector can act in isolation: there must be close co-ordination between volunteers and volunteer coaches, PGA professionals, and club management and governance. Thirdly, golf needs to be very proactive in promoting the wider benefits of the game to local and central government, and to a nongolfing audience. Free access to pitch and putt courses is a feature in Scotland, as is the right of the public to use designated parts of golf courses for recreation. For example on the Saturday before this year’s Open Championship the citizens of St Andrews were walking their dogs, wheeling prams, and heading for the beach across the Old Course, as is their right every week. Something like this in New Zealand would help to put to bed some of the misconceptions around golf course land usage, as illustrated by the rather one-sided debate in Auckland at the moment. The Scots did get one thing wrong when they brought the game here: they kept the same May–October season going for competitive play as in Scotland, ignoring the change in hemisphere. Perhaps they didn’t notice too much difference in the climate, given the vagaries of the Scottish “summer” – the Open Championship being an excellent example of that.

The perfect Maungakiekie drive We don’t usually publish stories about readers’ holes-in-one but on this occasion we make an exception. Auckland dentist Prashant Kalyan made the effort to put into writing the delight of a hole-in-one and we enjoyed it. Hope you do to. By Dr Prashant Kalyan, GOLFER

T

was a crisp, fresh Sunday morning (Sunday August 9, 2015, 10.15am), at Maungakiekie Golf Club, Auckland’s emerald jewel. As we are all blessed friends (we call ourselves “The Khiladis”, a term meaning “The Players” in Hindi), we are privileged to play the wonderful game of golf every Sunday morning, a dozen or so friends, who wake up every Sunday morning, rain, hail or shine in anticipation of that perfect drive, perfect iron, perfect wedge and perfect putt. Play could be a slight exaggeration considering the handicaps we play off, ranging from about 15 to 30. Some of us like to get a greater shot per fee return than others. I play off 15 — “on a good day”. As we tee off on the first, we see the trees to the left, the bank going down on the right, the crowd of friends watching, the banter beginning for the day, we stand over the ball, carry out our individual quirky routines, say our prayers to the good lord of golf, and swing away. There begins the day. The 18 hole crusade. On this day, I was attempting to play to my usual strengths and weakness. The drives were short but “generally” on the fairway. The iron shots and wedges were going well and the putting was fairly good. The ground underfoot was fairly heavy as it has rained the night prior. The course was playing about five shots more difficult than usual. On the turn after nine holes, I had played 45 shots. Not great, but not bad. Many a bogey and a couple of doubles. As I mentioned, I am not a long driver, but when I am playing well, the driver does send the ball in a straightish path. And then the moment, a moment to saviour, a shot for the ages. As I approached the 11th tee, I reached into my bag for my four hybrid, as the hole was 150 plus metres, which for me is rather long. Divine intervention, perhaps, and personal acceptance of my limitations, convinced me to put the hybrid down, pick up the driver (Titleist 910 D2) to help send a ball into the sky towards the hole. My friends, Dinesh Kumar and Sanjay Kumar, looked at me sheepishly, and un-

Prashant Kalyan (left) poses with his golfing buddies Dinesh Kumar (middle) and Sanjay Kumar after his hole-in-one at Maungakiekie.

derstood “Dockal” as they called me ( Dr Kalyan due to my second job as a dentist) will need this weapon to reach the green. The ball was therefore teed up perhaps a little lower and a dash to the centre of my stance. The theory, mine at least, that I shall gently swing slightly down on the ball and create a greater loft and ease the ball into the green. So there I was. The ball teed, the sun reflecting upon the ball (a Srixon soft feel, which my dear friends in jest call a ladies’ ball), I stood over the ball, with a gentle breeze on my face and the warm sun on my back.

Ball position check, feet position check, knee positions check, back position check, shoulder direction check, head position check, weight slightly on front foot check, grip check, check check check. Then the swing, a smooth steady takeaway, smooth inside to out swing. weight transfer forward, the ball was hit perfectly at impact. Then the follow through The impact, which lasted less than a millisecond, it determined the ball’s velocity, the launch angle and the spin rate, all of which influenced the trajectory of my ball and its behaviour when it hit the ground. I looked up, it felt perfect, looked perfect,

but was it? It landed on the green and disappeared. My playing partners Dinesh ( aka Bubba, being a leftie) and Sanjay ( aka The Bomber, as he uses an orange ball called The Bomb) complimented on my shot. They took their shots, and then we walked towards the green. Dinesh and Sanjay were looking for their balls (a fairly common occurrence in our golf games) around the fringes of the green. They found theirs but where was mine? I could not see it. Perhaps I had over hit it into the lake immediately behind the green? After all, what sort of a man hits a driver on a 150 metre par three? (A very talented one in my opinion). I walked behind the green, no ball, the lake was full of overnight rain, so no ball in sight. Bubba suggested I look in the hole. A silly suggestion considering the probabilities. I walk towards the hole, admittedly heart rate increasing as I am now starting to think, believe, and dream that perhaps... No, can’t be, could it, maybe, what are the chances? (one in 12,500 apparently). As I get closer to the hole, the heart rate is now 150, I nervously look down the hole. As a tear runs down my eye I see a white object with a mass no more than 1.62 ounces (45.93 grams) and a diameter not less than 1.68 inches (42.6mm), as approved by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and the United States Golf Association. That beautiful, loveable gem,.looking, winking and smiling back at me. I scream. My friends laugh. I can’t actually remember what I said. Perhaps a few words not suitable for my or anyone else’s children. My friends ran towards me, there were high fives, hugs, not quite kisses, that’s close enough mate. And then the obligatory selfies. I got on my knee next to the flag and hole, thanked the golfing gods, picked up my soft feel ball, which has never felt so soft, tender, and kissed it and promised it a life forever on my trophy wall in my bar at home. Looking forward to many more tears, cheers and beers, whilst watching that white ball fly into our dreams.

GOLF TRAVEL

An unforgettable golf experience A

rchbishop Desmond Tutu affectionately coined the phrase Rainbow Nation to describe post-apartheid South Africa after their first fully democratic election in 1994. While cultural diversity was the origin for the term, Rainbow Nation is indeed an apt descriptor for the rich palette of sights, aromas and sounds that emanate from South Africa’s iconic flora and fauna. South Africa has a rich history, a fusion of culture, stunning and diverse landscapes, iconic game viewing, boutique wines and quality golf courses stretching from Pretoria to Cape Town. If you enjoy the challenge of a coastal course, there is a stunning selection availa-ble. If you prefer playing at altitude, where the ball flies that much further, the selection is just as good. Starting on 23 February, Go Golfing’s 17 day fully escorted tour features 8 rounds of golf starting in Pretoria, just outside Johannesburg. The tour continues to the lavish playground of Sun City where you play South Africa’s most famous course, Gary Player Country Club. The pristine kikuyu fairways and bent greens are flawless. The neighbouring Lost City course is equally impressive. Beware of the 13th hole, a par 3 with Nile crocodiles residing in the moat around the green. Imagine losing a ball into the hazard only to find it is inhabited by crocodiles!

Excitement mounts as you head to Kruger National Park and a sunset game drive con-firms you are not alone. Kruger National Park, best known for the Big 5 – lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo and rhino – is recognised as the flagship of Africa and South Africa’s game reserves. You will play a game at White River Golf Club located inside a game reserve. The golf courses around to the Kruger National Park have a unique charm, animals occa-sionally crossing the fairways while hippos can be heard at the nearby water holes. Add in the unequalled beau-

ty of the bushveld landscape and it adds up to a very special and un-forgettable golf experience. A short flight to the Cape Winelands and you will find yourself driving along the famous Garden Route. Stretching for 500 miles along the Indian Ocean east of Cape Town, it is a flora wonderland boasting over 8,500 plant species and five of the country’s 12 best courses. You will tee it up at De Zalze, Pezula and the prestigious Fancourt and you will be equally impressed with the wine and food. Travelling back to Cape Town, Table Mountain dominates the landscape. The fi-

nal round on tour is at Atlantic Beach, a links style course without peer that overlooks the Atlantic Ocean. Go Golfing Travel have been hosting group tours to South Africa for the past 14 years. Voted Oceania’s Best Golf Tour Operator at the World Golf Awards, no company is better equipped than Go Golfing to give you the ultimate South African golf and touring experi-ence. This tour is strictly limited to 30. Book online and quote “NZGOLFER” to receive early bird pricing – that’s a saving of $1,000 per couple. WHAT’S NEW

Premium woods from Callaway Callaway Golf are delighted to be able to officially share some exciting news surrounding a new lineup of premium woods. In 1995 the Great Big Bertha was launched and revolutionised the golfing industry. Creating a product that the game had never witnessed before, it cemented itself in the history books and put Callaway Golf on the map. The name ‘Great Big Bertha’ is synonymous with golf and they’re very pleased to announce that the new Great Big Bertha is here. In addition to the Great Big Bertha, Callaway Golf are launching the Big Bertha Alpha 816 Double Black Diamond driver and Big Bertha Alpha 816 fairway wood; product made with extreme distance for expert players.

Big Bertha Alpha 816 Double Black Diamond Driver: Extreme Distance For Expert Players

T

he Big Bertha Alpha 816 Double Black Diamond Driver is built for high-calibre players looking for the ultimate combination of extreme distance and shot-shaping control in a sleek, traditional shape. The all-new Dual Distance Chambers allow Callaway’s Gravity Core to work as a distance turbo charger. Here’s how it works: Golfers simply choose to put the Gravity Core in either the left or right chamber for a draw or neutral setting, and flip it up or down depending on where their normal impact location is on the face. More weight behind the impact location equals more ball speed and more distance. In addition, next-generation R*MOTO Technology provides the structure for a thinner face, leading to high ball speeds on balls struck anywhere on the face. Based on feedback from better players, Callaway engineers designed

the Big Bertha Alpha 816 Double Black Diamond Driver with a deeper face, a more traditional shape and a low center of gravity to reduce spin, along with just the right amount of forgiveness and workability. The shape of the crown, the open face angle, and the matte black finish with no distractions are all designed to suit the eyes of better players’ as they stand over the ball. The easy-to-use OptiFit hosel lets golfers add or decrease loft and adjust the lie angle to fit their specific swing. Loft Available: RH / LH: 9° & 10.5° Available at Retail: Late September, 2015

Big Bertha Alpha 816 Fairway Wood: Speed and Adjustability for Better Players

T

HE Big Bertha Alpha 816 Fairway Woods are Callaway’s most advanced fairway woods, designed for better players who desire shot-shaping control and Tour-style distance. Good players will love the adjustable centre of gravity (CG) weights (3g and 16g) that let you determine the ball flight you want to play. Simply move the weight forward when you want a lower spin, flatter ball flight, and move it back for more forgiveness and a higher launch. However you set the CG, the Forged Hyper Speed Face Cup will generate ball speed on center and off-center shots. A modern shape with a slightly larger head offers more MOI than you would expect out of an elite player’s fairway wood

and the sole design provides control from a variety of lies. The matte black finish delivers an uncluttered look at address and the OptiFit hosel’s eight-way adjustability lets you tune the fairway wood to the settings you want—add or decrease loft, or adjust the lie angle to fit your swing.

Lofts Available: RH: 14.0°, 16.0° and 18.0° LH: 14.0° and 16.0° Available at Retail: Late September, 2015

B Callaway Great Big Bertha Driver: Leave No Yard Behind

T

HE Great Big Bertha Driver from Callaway is back, with a multi dimensional design that features a low center of gravity and high MOI to deliver distance with forgiveness. The light, fast, stable chassis is the key to generating higher clubhead speed, and with the perfect combination of aerodynamic shaping with multi-material construction, it comes with all the bells and whistles to set the club configuration to suit your swing type—ad-

justable loft, draw bias, perimeter weighting and various weight configurations from 295 to 325g. Next Gen R*MOTO Technology provides the design structure for a thinner face, which leads to higher ball speeds on center hits and off-centre hits. Adjustable Perimeter Weighting adds stability and forgiveness moving the weight to the point on the clubhead that delivers greater dispersion control based on your swing characteristics. The Great

Big Bertha also offers you virtually unlimited draw and fade bias options—all without sacrificing forgiveness. Like the perimeter weighting track, Callaway’s Optifit hosel provides simple adjustability by allowing you to choose from 8 different configurations to tune loft, lie, and face angle. Lofts available: RH / LH: 9°, 10.5° & 13.5° Available at Retail: Early September, 2015

OLSTERED by Callaway’s fastest fairway wood technology, a bigger head design, Optifit hosel adjustability and the famed Modern Warbird Sole, the Great Big Bertha Fairway Wood returns to deliver the ultimate in forgiveness and control. A Forged Hyper Speed Face Cup is designed to achieve high ball speeds for great distance on center hits and off-centre hits. The head sizes are larger than that of typical fairway woods and that extra surface area leads to a higher MOI for more forgiveness. Callaway also added its legendary Warbird Sole, which makes the club easy to hit from a variety of lies with a mid-launching trajectory. Add loft, decrease loft off or adjust the lie angle to fit your swing via the Optifit hosel, which fea-

tures eig htway adjustability. The Great Big Bertha Fairway Wood range also offers the Heavenwood (20.5-degree loft, 43inch shaft) and Divine Nine (24-degree, 42-inch shaft) clubs to help tighten your dispersion. Golfers looking to fill distance gaps in their bags will also find these clubs to be the perfect solutions. Shots to the left hand side don’t get a shot at the green as this is blocked by mature pine trees. The first was on the 160m 14th hole in 2009 followed by the 155m 11th hole in 2012, the 157m 7th hole in 2013 and the most recent at the 152m 4th hole on August 10th 2015. GOLF TRAILS LOVE GOLF, LOVE WAIUKU LOVE Golf? – The Waiuku Golf Club certainly does. Check out their amazing specials for the month of September. They are offering a special deal on the Dot Golf “Love Golf” site for 1 round of 18 hole golf for two players and it includes 1 golf cart for only $59.00 (check with the office for the availability of a cart first, then grab a voucher from “Love Golf” while it lasts. But wait! There’s more, don’t despair if you happen to miss out on a cart, they have another great deal for you. Green fees for the month of September are only $20 for a round of 18 hole golf. Waiuku Golf want you to love golf just as much as they do. Bad weather over successive weekends meant the TOP Dog competition was finally completed on Saturday 1st August 2015.

TANE SHINES AT WAIUKU WAIUKU GOLF’S proudest young players – Tane Dawson-Te Kani (age 11yrs) played his best round with 44 stableford points on his 28 handicap. The Haggle on Thursday 16th July saw Tane hand over his pocket money to pay the competition fee along with all the other more senior members on that day.

Pictured above are the winners of Top Dog, David Bates and Murray Armstrong. Pictured top right are the winners of the Colliter Cup, Greg Cowie and Cam Fleming.

Taking first prize in division two, he said he had a feeling he would play well and being school holidays all he wanted to do was play golf. They have kept a keen eye on Tane’s progress since he was a toddler when his grandfather Alan Dawson put a club in Tane’s hand and coached the young lad to swing hard and with words from his wise Koroua “That boy has potential”, he was now a regular side kick out on the course. Tane entered the Top Dog competition in the hope of qualifying with his playing partner (Patrick Dowd). Not one to be intimated or shy away from the challenge of playing with elders, Tane fronted up with the rest of the players and did his partner proud by qualifying for Top Dog. From there they won the stableford match play first round, but unfortunately lost on the second challenge. A keen golfer and an asset to their club, Tane is up and out of bed early on the weekends to help rake the bunkers and is always willing to help out wherever he might be needed. He is a very confident and experienced careful driver of a golf cart and is always checking the bookings to get the carts out and ready, he will also pop back later in the day to ensure they are plugged in and locked away. Tane has the utmost respect for golf etiquette, the course and his elders and in turn, he has earned the respect to be a valid member of their golf club. Well done Tane, Waiuku Golf are all very proud of you. 

63RD LADIES ANNUAL ELAINE BLEDISLOE TOURNAMENT WAITANGI GOLF CLUB hosted their Annual Elaine Bledisloe 72-hole Matchplay Tournament on the Weekend of 8th and 9th of August. The weather behaved well on Saturday although started off at a chilly 4 degrees. Unfortunately Sunday was not so good and after most players had managed three rounds the heavens opened and flooded the greens. A halt was called in play for half an hour but after more delay it was agreed that fourth round matches would instead be a sudden death play- off starting on the first hole. There was a field of 60 players from 16 Clubs stretching from Auckland to Houhora. This Tournament also acts as part of the trials for the Northland Representative Team and again it was wonderful to see so many young guns in the top division competing for the right to represent Northland. The eventual winner of the top division for the Bledisloe Cup was Brooke Kingi, daughter of last years winner, Sam Dangen from Whangaroa and the runner up was Kylie Jacoby from Waipu. There were two more divisions playing 72 holes over the two days. The eventual winners of these divisions were:

NORTH HARBOUR

JOSH LETICH VICTORIOUS THE annual North Harbour Men’s Stroke Play Championship was played at the Muriwai Golf Links from August 16th to 18th.

The tournament has become one of the highlights of the current amateur calendar at this time of year and a 90 strong field from all parts of the North Island assembled to do battle over the links. The first two days saw difficult weather conditions and the field was cut to 50 and ties (162 or less) for the 3rd/4th rounds on the Sunday. Manugakiekie’s Josh Leitch who had been one back of leaders Luke Brown (The Pines) and Warren Pretorius (Whitford) starting the 3rd round would shot two rounds of 70 over the last 36 holes and claim the title by 4 shots from Luke. Third place when to James Beale (North Shore and Canadian Amateur Champion) who shot two 68’s over the last two rounds to finish 5 back on 289. The tournament was once again sponsored and supported by Harbour Golf’s official partner TaylorMade / Adidas Golf and the prize table was massive with 25 of the competitors receiving prizes. Congratulations to winner Josh Leitch on the biggest win of his amateur career and the top ten finishers are shown below: 2015 NH Stroke Play (Top 10) 1 – Josh Leitch (Maungakiekie) 283 2 – Luke Brown (The Pines) 287 3 – James Beale (North Shore) 289 T4 – Warren Pretorius (Whitford) 291 T4 – Chang-gi Lee (Pupuke) – 291 6 – Mason Lee (The Grannge) – 292 7 – Wesley Jeon (Whitford) – 293 T8 – Kadin Neho (Whangarei) – 294 T8 – Brian Joe (Titirangi) – 294 T8 – Jordan Loof (Akarana) – 294 T8 – Lachie McDonald (Marton) – 294

CHANGI-LEE WINS BOP OPEN HARBOUR senior representative Changgi Lee (Pupuke) claimed the biggest win of his career recently by taking out the prestigious 2015 Bay of Plenty Open Championship. Despite struggling with an opening round of 75 he would storm back into contention over the next three days with rounds of 68, 66 and 67. His four round total of 276 was good enough for a one shot victory over a very strong field. It was also a solid tournament for other Harbour players with the following posting top 10 results: Mark Hutson—Tied 4th Jake Meenhorst—7th Cam Jones/Kevin Koong—Tied 8th But the major spoils went to Chang-gi with his fantastic win. After some solid results recently one felt it was only a matter of time before the talented player captured a major amateur title and that came to fruition at the Whakatane Golf Club. From all of us at Harbour Golf, congratulations Chang-gi! JUNIOR GOLFERS IN DEVELOPMENT CAMPS THREE of harbour golf’s best juniors were selected and attended development training camps organised by NZ Golf at St Peters School in Hamilton. Jake Meenhorst (Huapai), Ela Grimwood (Gulf Harbour) and Bohyun Park (Gulf Harbour) were part of these national initiatives which go through all aspects of what it takes to further the player’s careers in golf, from the physical to the mental and all in between. Jake maintains the experience was a real eye opener, “the camp taught me that it takes a lot of effort, dedication and motivation to move up from an amateur to a successful professional golfer”. Ela Grimwood also spoke highly on all the facets of the camp which included learning the Aim Point green reading method, sessions on the mental side of the game with David Gailbraith, and working with other top golfers and experienced NZ Golf staff to

learn what it takes to advance your game to the next level. Overall the sessions were seen as very positive and eye opening for the participants and we congratulate these North Harbour juniors who were selected and attended these national development camps.

TADHG CAMPBELL LEAVES NZ SHORES ONE of North Harbour’s very top amateur golfers Tadhg Campbell (Muriwai) has recently left New Zealand to take up a full 4 year college golf scholarship in the USA at New Mexico State University. Tadhg (pictured above) has been one of the most talented golfers to rise through the Harbour ranks in recent years and I am sure you will all join the association in wishing him the very best as he takes the next exciting step in his golf career. Keep in touch Tadhg and we look forward to hearing about your experiences over there!

HAMILTON GOLF CLUB JUNIOR OPEN THE Hamilton Golf Club recently hosted forty juniors from thirteen clubs in their annual tournament sponsored by the club professional Andrew Horan. The frosts held off and a beautiful Waikato day produced some excellent golf. For the first time a division for nine holes off the shorter purple tees was included and this proved very popular for our budding new golfers.

Pictured above are 18 hole winners Zoe Huang (winner girls), Connor Mathews (winner boys div 2 ), Sam McGovern (winner boys div 1). Pictured below are the nine hole winners Han-Young Lee and Leo Jee.

NORTH HARBOUR DEVELOPMENT JUNIORS VS NORTHLAND NORTH HARBOUR’S development junior boys and girls (pictured below) competed against Northland juniors on August 2nd at the always beautifully presented Omaha Beach Golf Club.

It was a successful day for North Harbour with the young team coming out on top and winning the shield back from their competition by an overall margin of 177 to 147. This annual representative event targets giving many young up and coming juniors their first taste of representative golf as many of the players will one day advance through the ranks to become top district players. A great time was had by all and matches were all played in good spirit. A big thank you to Northland golf who we continue to have a great relationship with in fostering the junior game and running representative events for our players.

TAHUNA AND HORSHAM DOWNS CLAIM 2015 WILLS CUP/ JUG THE 2015 Wills Cup finals were played at Walton Golf Club, on Friday 14th August.

Four teams of 6 had qualified for the Wills Cup final and 4 teams of 6 had qualified for the Jug Finals. The Wills Cup finalists who each finished top of their respective zones in qualifying were Waitomo, Tahuna, Riverside and Tirau. The Jug finalists who finished runner-up in their respective zones in qualifying were: PioPio Aria, Matamata, Horsham Downs and the combined Waiterimu/ Morrinsville side. The format of the event is medal matchplay where players are drawn against a player from one of the opposing three teams; each player completes all 18 holes where a hole by hole handicap matchplay process is played. Winning a hole earns the player 2 points whilst a half earns that player 1 point. The team’s total number of points would determine the winners on the day. The 48 players were greeted to blustery conditions, which made some holes particularly difficult. In the Jug, it was the side from Horsham Downs who came out on top with a combined total score of 120 points. This was 13 points clear of second placed Waiterimu/ Morrinsville. Matamata were in 3rd spot only 2 points behind the runners-up, and in 4th spot was PioPio Aria on a combined 100 points. A very closely fought Jug competition for 2015. The Wills Cup side of the day was a different story with Tahuna claiming an emphatic victory, the combined team total of 128 points was a whopping 22 points clear of runners-up Waitomo on 106 points. Riverside finished 3rd on 102 points, and the team from Tirau was 4th on 96 points. With a number of closely fought matches, the ladies made a miserable day (weather wise) an overall success. Pictured are the winning Wills Cup team (Tahuna), with Jan Wills.

MCGIVEN WINS WAIKATO MASTERS WAIKATO Masters representative Andrew McGiven has won the 2015 Waikato Masters Championships held at Waikare Golf Club on Saturday 15th August. Players were greeted with fine Waikato weather and a well presented course for the 36 hole event. Walton’s Andrew McGiven led the field after Round 1 posting a -2under par 68 which included 7 birdies, 3 bogeys and a double on the 8th hole. Dave Izzard (Waitakere) was one shot back on 69, along with a previous Waikato Master’s Champion in Martin Tumata (Onewhero). Fellow Waikato Master’s representative Phillip Hunter posted an even par 70 as did Mark Anderson (Akarana). Mcgiven held his nerve in round 2 posting another -2under par 68, mixing 3 birdies and a bogey. Martin Tumata did his best to claw back McGiven but his -2par 68 was only as good as McGiven handing McGiven the well-deserved 1 shot victory. McGivens two round total of 136 was the best of the 93 strong field, Martin Tumata finished one shot back in second place (137), third was James Gardiner (Titirangi) on 143 who was tied with Waikato’s Phillip Hunter and Mark Anderson (Akarana). Congratulations to Andrew McGiven, GOLFER PACIFIC September 2015  23

IEREMIA TOO GOOD AT CAMBRIDGE - CASSIDY WINS AGAIN! NEW ZEALAND and Waikato representatives Denzel Ieremia and Chantelle Cassidy have both won the Men’s and Woman’s Classic Builders 43rd Cambridge Classic over the weekend Of 7-9th of August. In a field of 13 women, Chantelle Cassidy was too good for her competitors over the weekend. However she was challenged early in the competition by a young golfer from Pakuranga. Rose Zheng (Pakuranga) held the Round 1 lead in wet conditions at the Cambridge Golf Club. Rose shot an even par 72 which was good enough for a 3 shot lead over Waikato’s Chantelle Cassidy (75), and four shots from fellow Waikato

representative Zoe Huang (76). In Round 2 Cassidy fired an even par 72 mixing just one birdie with one bogey. Zheng followed her 72 in round 1 with a 4over par 76 to give Cassidy a 1 shot lead. Cassidy and Zheng both fired 1over par 73’s in round 3, to set up an exciting finish in the final round. Cassidy showed her class and experience however, shooting a 3over par in tough conditions for a final round 75 to Zheng’s 76. Cassidy would win by 2, possibly being a little closer than she anticipated. Third place went to EmmaLee Morrell (Tauranga) with a tournament total of 311, one shot better than Zoe Huang (Hamilton) on 312. On the men’s side of the draw it was Jordan Golding (Omanu) who leaped out of the gates with a 5under par 67. Waikato representative Denzel Ieremia was one shot back mixing 8 birdies with one bogey and a triple bogey on the par 4, 9th hole. Other Waikato players to get off to a good start included Cameron Leigh (Tirau) 71, Chris Charlton (Riverside) 71. A miserably wet Saturday greeted all participants for Round 2 of the competition and it proved a tougher day for scoring. Bay of Plenty representative and New Zealand representative Henry Spring was the best of the lot with an impressive 4under par 68. Combined with his round 1 score of 72 would take him one shot back from leader Jordan Golding (Omanu) who followed up his round 1 67 with an even par 72. Ieremia also posted an even par 72 in round 2, to make it a close race at the top of the leaderboard. The top 55 players would make the cut for the 36 hole final two rounds on Sunday.

NOVEMBER 3RD MELBOURNE CUP DAY ( Entries open now..fills up very fast!)

Denzel Ieremia went on to shoot a flawless 6under 66, mixing 6 birdies with 12 pars, to shoot to the top of the Cambridge Classic Leaderboard. Overnight leader Golding went on to post a 2under par 70. Fellow Waikato representative Nick Coxon shot a 5nder par 67 in round 3, as did Justin Morris (Te Awamutu), and Northland representative Luke Brown (The Pines). The 6under par 66 in round 3 from Ieremia would give him a 4 shot lead going into the final round at the Cambridge Golf Club. Ieremia continued his good form in the last round posting a 4under par 68 which proved too good for the rest of the field. Ieremia would win the 2015 Classic Builders Cambridge Classic by an impressive 6 shots. GHANGI GI LEE TAKES OUT BOP OPEN 19 YEAR OLD Pupuke Golfer Changi Gi Lee took out this year’s Bay of Plenty Open with a stunning three rounds after a shaky start at Whakatane.

golferpacific.co.nz

GOLF TRAILS After an opening 5 over 75 he put together 3 sub-par rounds of 68 66 & 67 to take the title by one shot from Whitford Parks’ Wesley Jeon who failed to make a 1.5 metre part on the final hole to force a play-off. Going into the final 36 holes on Sunday Lee, Jeon and local hope Landyn Edwards were best positioned to win and so it remained after 54 holes. Jeon was playing with Edwards in the final group and the lead changed several times before Lee who was 2 groups ahead snuck ahead with a birdie on the final hole. Edward’s challenge fell away on the 15th when his tee shot remained lodged in a tree and it was up to Jeon on the 18th to force a play-off which looked likely when he hit a superb second shot so close to the flag. However the delicate putt across the slope just fell under the hole to give Changi Gi Lee his first significant tournament victory. The challenge to take the Bay of Plenty Women’s Championship title never rose to the same heights as neither Alanna Campbell nor Grace Senior could get close enough to the runaway leader Chantelle Cassidy. She was never under threat but capped her final day with a hole in one on the 11th hole on her way to her 7 shot victory. Leading Scores: Men: Changi Gi Lee (Pupuke) 276, Wesley Jeon (Whitford Park) 277, Landyn Edwards (Rotorua) 280, Mark Hutson (North Shore) & Lachie McDonald (Marton) 281. Women: Chantelle Cassidy (Cambridge) 293, Grace Senior (Wairakei) 300, Alanna Campbell (Omanu) 304, Yena Chang (Akarana) 305.

CELESTE MCLEAN EYES PROFESSIONAL CIRCUIT TARANAKI DAILY NEWS/PETRA FINER

WAVERLEY resident Celeste McLean is moving to New Jersey this week to attend Fairleigh Dickinson University with a golf scholarship.

Playing golf in the United States is going to feel luxurious for a Waverley teenager. Celeste McLean, 18, is headed to New Jersey’s Fairleigh Dickinson University with a golfing scholarship that will meet 76 per cent of her annual course fees. The former Manaia Golf Club member is used to rougher Taranaki courses, often with sheep as moving obstacles. “It’s a bit scary, leaving here, I don’t really know what to expect,” she said. “I haven’t lived out of South Taranaki.” McLean was 11 years old when she began playing golf with her sister. Her competitive edge took over and McLean set out to play better than her sibling but loved the competition against herself just as much. “Me and her had a real good competitive start to it, which is probably why I started it and then she stopped. “She was always better than me until she stopped.” While both nervous and excited to leave,

McLean said she would be back within the next year to visit family and friends. “I just want to give golf a real good go, that’s the main reason, and if that doesn’t work out then I’ll fall back on my studies and focus on that for the last few years.” McLean must maintain a C average in her psychology classes in order to keep her scholarship while also playing well in the golf team. The ultimate goal would be to turn professional. McLean has travelled all over New Zealand and to Australia to compete. She is due to report to Fairleigh Dickinson by August 17 to begin her studies. 36 HOLE OPEN STROKE PLAY AT MARAENUI IN very testing conditions 66 golfers participated in the Premier event of the Golf HB and PB Womens Golf Association on Sunday, August 16. They then travelled to Maraenui and played 36 holes of golf, Skylah Pohatu finishing 2nd in the Women’s gross section, Jett Pohatu finishing 2nd in the Women’s nett and then travelled back to Gisborne afterwards. Congratulations to Myra White winning the Women’s Nett with 154 from Jett Pohatu on 155. Winner of the Women’s gross was Fiona Ellis on 169 and the runner up was Skylah Pohatu on 172. In the Men’s section Liam Brown was the winner on 145 with the runner up Wade Williams just one point behind on 146. TUHORANGI HEADS TO THE USA PHOTO: WARREN BUCKLAND STORY: HAWKES BAY TODAY

TUHOURANGI WILSON has a much bigger drive than most 9-year-olds. It’s not just his 160m monster swing off the tee but his dedication to his discipline

and desire to be the best. The pint-sized prodigy has already chalked up a number of tournament wins and was recently invited to San Diego IMG Callaway Junior Golf Championship. Thousands of applicants were turned away from the prestigious California tournament. “He was pretty lucky to get selected,” Tuhourangi’s mother said. The Mahora School Year 5 pupil relished the chance to compete with the world’s elite young golfers. “It was awesome,” he said. The level of professionalism was an eye-opener for Tuhourangi and his father Manuel. “It’s amazing the lengths they go to over there,” Manuel said. “Nine and 10-year-olds with psychologists, dieticians and live-in coaches. We don’t want that for him just yet.” The sweltering San Diego sun took its toll on Tuhourangi’s game. Despite playing in 35C heat with 80 per cent humidity, he managed to finish midfield. “I did alright,” he said. While the trip was strictly business, Tuhourangi did get the chance to visit the local zoo. Surrounded by lions, tigers and bears, Tuhourangi only wanted a photo of the resident donkey. While most golfers can struggle to keep their emotions in check, Tuhourangi plays each stroke with a clear head. “Just forget about the last shot,” he tells himself. Golf is a tough discipline to get kids to commit to. Manuel said Tuhourangi’s brother “would be chasing leaves by the third hole”. Tuhourangi’s favourite golfer is Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy “because he’s No1”. His favourite course is at his local Karamu club, where he nearly shot his first hole-in-one after lipping the hole on six. His best round at the course is an impressive 77. Playing off a 15 handicap, Tuhourangi is relishing his first year in the Hawke’s Bay Golf Academy of 26 talented amateurs. Here he plays with like-minded individu-

als who feed off each other in a stimulating environment. “It helps him with his mental side of the game, course management,” Manuel said. And although he can drive 160m, he said his short game was his strength, thanks to countless hours of practice. “He started watching golf on TV with me and from age 4 he was swinging a club,” Manuel said. On Sunday Tuhourangi will take part in the Hawke’s Bay junior intercity competition at Maraenui Golf Club. A far cry from the greens of California, it will just be another round on his journey to achieving his dream of becoming a professional golfer.

A fashion show will be the major highlight of the evening, however all attendees will also enjoy a gourmet meal from the skilful team at Bunkers Cafe. Plus, everyone receives a free glass of wine from Trinity Hill. There will be some great spot prizes on the night, plus a raffle for the chance to win a cruiser bike valued at $499, thanks to Milton Andrews and Revolution Bikes. “Get together a group of women golfers, invite a few friends along and enjoy a preview of the latest trends, plus great clothing specials on the night”, says organiser Brett Allan. Fashion in golf has evolved significantly in recent years. As a sport which is steeped in tradition, it has advanced from the ‘bulky and dated’ look to that of ‘comfortable and fashionable’ attire. “With high profile golfers as role models, such as Lydia Ko, the shift is more visible towards trendier and more fashionable golf outfits. We are excited to showcase the latest fashions in a fun night out,” says Brett. ‘Fashion for the Fairways’ is on 23 September at 4.45pm, at Hastings Golf Cluc,

and is only $25 per person, including your meal and glass of wine. Everyone is welcome. Tickets are limited. Please contact Hastings Golf Club for more information on 879 7206 or email info@hastingsgolfclub.co.nz. 

MANAWATU WANGANUI

JOHN MEANS MEMORIAL FOURSOMES THE John Means Memorial Foursomes tournament was played recently at Castlecliff Golf Club. Postponed due to the floods that devastated parts of Wanganui in June, the club rallied but we were able to get it played a month later than scheduled on July 19th. The event was postponed it the first time with members stranded, visitors unable to get into Wanganui and a golf course drowned from the excessive rain. Four of their holes were closed for over a month until they managed to open so that the field of 120 players were able to play the full 18 holes, avoiding the the temporary layout. It was a great turn out to celebrate the commitment and service to the club by John Means. He was a member, representative player, professional and greenkeeper at various times at our club from 1964 to 2010 and the club is pleased to run this annual event in his memory. The scoring was pretty good in both divisions. Division 1: Mark Donaldson + James Arnott 68.5, Rodney Donaldson + Sue Haden 69.0, Barry Pickett + John Endersby 69.5 Division 2: Paddy Edmonds + Tim Head 68.0, Pat + Marlene Gray 70.5, George Harper + Lyn Gordon 71.5

Whilst five clubs around us where closed because of flooding Levin Golf Club hosted Manawatu/Wanganui verses Wellington 9th August.

Pictured are Jordan Burgess and Aiden Blackler Juniors representing Wellington at Levin against Manawatu/Wanganui. Although it sounds one sided with Wellington winning 40 to 24 there were some very tight matches. In the morning the top men’s reverse singles Wellington won 6 and a half 5 and a half. The afternoon saw the opposite with Manawatu/Wanganui beating Wellington 6 and a half 5 and a half. The course was in great order for the event. Both associations announced their teams for the coming.

GOLF TRAILS very different to last year, with a number of players no longer available. The event has 4 different team categories; Senior Men, Women, Masters Men and Junior Men, with 32 players in each district, all playing two 18 hole matches. The trophy goes to the team with the highest number of wins over all 64 matches. The highlight for Manawatu Wanganui was the senior men drawing 12 all, after number 1 Lachie McDonald bombed a long putt from just off the green to win one up on the final hole. The Mens team had a very different look to last years team, with teenagers Liam Finlayson and Greg Shaw making their senior debut’s, and Regan Cording and Denny Thompson returning to the team after lengthy absences from rep play. Trent Munn also made a return after a years absence. Encouraging also was that the top order performed strongly against a very strong Wellington top 5 boasting the current NZ amateur champion, and 3 other former NZ reps. The Masters men had a very close result going down 7 – 5. This was an encouraging performance considering normal masters number 1 Stu Smith was playing at number 5 in the senior mens team, and won both his matches. The Junior men had very much a development team, with Liam Finlayson and Greg Shaw, competing as part of the Senior team. Most of the Junior team were competing in this event for the first time, so it was a very good experience for them in preparation for other Junior events to come this year. They went down 9 – 3 for the day. The womens team had lost their top 3

players from the past few years so were also approaching this match in development mode. Infact long serving representative Jenny Ritchie stood aside this year to give some younger players an opportunity. While the team were beaten 12 – 4, there were some very good individual performances which is encouraging as they build toward the Toro later in the year.

rounds, the competition being bisque par. As can be expected the final scores are high. This year the winner was Club stalwart Gary Smith with a combined total of Plus 23. Gary also won the comp on the final day with plus 9.

GOLF TRAILS Weather conditions were mild and with very little wind, the stage was set for a low scoring afternoon round. Adam Church 69, Brad Rowland 68 and tournament winner Kerry Mountcastle (Masterton) 66 were the only players managing to break par. The five under par 66 from Mountcastle, along with his first round 74 was good enough for him to claim victory by 2 shots from Mirimar’s Peter Spearman- Burn (71,71), and in third spot was Stuart Smith from Manawatu (73,71). The nett winner was Richard Bartlett from Paraparaumu on 142, followed by Brady Bernard Paraparaumu on 143, in third place was Adam Church Mirimar on 144. Julianne Alvarez from Manor Park played consistent golf with rounds of 74/73 to win the ladies gross, with Emma Hayward Paraparaumu claiming second place. Glennie Hayward Paraparaumu won the ladies nett on 147 with Kellie Harrall Royal Wellington claiming second place. Thanks to Smiths City Kapiti for their continued support, the event was well received by all and the course was as always in great condition despite a wet winter thus far.

SECOND-STRING WELLINGTON TOO STRONG FOR MARLBOROUGH A WELLINGTON team missing six potential frontliners beat Marlborough 19-6 in their opening men’s rep golf match of the season at Paraparaumu Beach in late July. Captain Malcolm Gullery, No 1 Ben Slaven, No 2 Brayden Mazey and No 7 Daniel Dexter were the four unbeaten players over the two days for the hosts. The foursomes were evenly matched, with Wellington taking a 3-2 lead into the lunch break. But they bolted clear after the reverse singles, winning them 8-2. In Sunday’s singles they had the same margin. Wellington players to win both their singles matches were Gullery, Slaven, Mazey, Dexter, David van Drimmelen and Cooper Wattam, the latter playing on his home course. Wellington’s selectors took the opportunity to blood several young players at the start of the rep season. Among those not considered, who indicated their availability for later rep matches, were Jonathan Cane, Daniel Hillier, Peter SpearmanBurn, Thomas Spearman-Burn, Marc Jennings and Adam Church, all of whom have featured regularly for the province in recent years.

GROUND ANCHOR SYSTEMS BEAT THE PROS THE final round was played at Nelson Golf Club on Saturday the 8th of August in perfect conditions. John Gifkins and Dennis Andrews were crowned Champions with a Best 3 out of 5 rounds score of 135 Stableford points in the best Ball Format. There was a 4 way playoff for 2nd between Craig Marshall and Simon Parle, Jamie Barnes and Rory Kelly Grant Newport and Brendon Jeffery and finally Richard and Aaron Webby all on 128 points. The first time down 18 Rory Kelly made a 5 with 2 shots and that was good enough for him and Jamie to qualify 2nd and be coming to the Hanmer Open in early September. Grant Newport scored a 4 on the second time down the 18th for him and Brendon to pick up 3rd place overall. Congratulations and thank you to everyone who took part in this years completion and finally a big thank you to Nigel Wilson and Ground Anchor Systems for their continued support of this very popular event. Below are the scores to show how close the results were; John Gifkins and Dennis Andrews 135pts Rory Kelly and Jamie Barnes 128pts Brendon Jeffery and Grant Newport 128pts Aaron and Richard Webby 128pts Craig Marshall and Simon Parle 128pts Brent Williams and Matthew Jones 126pts E Milne and Andrew McDougall ( who came all the way from Timaru each week to play) 126pts Plus there were 7 teams on 125pts. So you can see it was a very tight competition this year.

Previously held in October, the organisers have shifted the event for more settled weather. The next “Nelson Festival of Golf” will be held in May 2016, from Monday 2nd May through to Friday 6th May. Nelson Festival of Golf – The Courses: Day 1 & Day 4: Nelson Golf Links has played host to two major championships in the New Zealand amateur golfing calendar recently, namely the 2014 NZ Amateur Championship and the 2015 NZ Seniors Championship. Entrants from both events were extremely complimentary about the course layout and condition, with particular mention of the world class greens. Day 2: Motueka Golf Course is a wonderful tree lined parkland course which recently hosted Sir Bob Charles for a round of golf, he left calling it one of New Zealand’s hidden gems. Praise indeed from a Kiwi golfing legend. Day 3: Greenacres Golf Course enjoys stunning scenery from almost every part of the course. This Best Island golf course features a great layout that will test your golfing skills to the full. Players at the recent Waimea Championships, which was held at the club, were full of praise on the condition of the course. 2015 RICCARTON PARK GOLF COMPLEX CANTERBURY 4BBB CHAMPIONSHIP THE 2015 Riccarton Park Golf Complex Canterbury 4BBB Championship was played at Christchurch Golf Club on Sunday 5 July. The tournament was played in idyllic winter conditions and scoring was solid around the the tough Shirley Links layout. Both the winning Men’s and Women’s pairs shot under par to win their respective titles. The top pairing of Jordan Bakermans and Shaun Allan (pictured, both Christchurch Golf Club) had a narrow win shooting 66 - Jordan shooting 67 himself.

The pair won from three others who finished on 67 – Dominic Brettkelly & Tom Parker (Russley), Oscar & James Cadenhead (Clearwater),and Phil Bungard & James Robb (Templeton). In the Women’s section Catherine Knight (Tinwald) and Anne Dick (Harewood) won by three shots with a two under par 72. Second was Lynley Watts and Chris Marple from Waitikiri. The winners of the Women’s Net were Mihee Woo & Sabina Park with 65. Men’s Div 1 Net was won by Oscar & James Cadenhead with 66, and the Men’s Div 2 Net was won by Shaun Payne & Jonathan Stieller also with 66. Thanks must go to John Pitman and his team at Riccarton Park Golf Complex sponsoring $3,000 worth of prize vouchers and Anton Worley at Frucor for sponsoring the tournament. Also to Tom Music and the team at Christchurch Golf Club for their support and hosting this Championship.

COLLABORATIVE APPROACH ENSURES SECURE FUTURE FOR RAWHITI GOLF CLUB RAWHITI Golf Course will stay open after the Christchurch City Council recently agreed to hand over maintenance and management of the course to the club. The CCC had proposed in its draft Long Term Plan (LTP) to close the New Brighton course in September to save $200,000 in operating costs and $2 million in capital expenditure. Shocked and upset by the move, the Rawhiti Golf Club came up with a survival plan that would see it operate and maintain the course itself at no cost to ratepayers. The proposal found favour with the council and councillors approved a management agreement with the Rawhiti Golf Club to operate and maintain the course as a public golf course. The move was part of a range of council initiatives to help regenerate the eastern suburbs. The agreement includes free rent for three years, when a rental assessment would be done based on the club’s financial performance. Club President Mene Mene said the club was “happy and excited” to hear the council had agreed to its proposal. “We’ll act as a caretaker, looking after the course for the interests of the public.” Mene said it was important the club remained because it was one of the last recreation facilities still in use in eastern Christchurch. Under the agreement the club will keep all the green fees and membership fees. It will continue to employ a Bar Manager and Greenkeeper, but the rest of the work would be done by volunteers. Mene said the club had been inundated with people wanting to help out. Its membership numbers increased while its future was uncertain. In 2013, the club had 190 members, Mene said. It now had 300. The bulk of the increase had come in the past few months. A number of rebuild workers were regularly playing at the course, he said, because it was affordable and the New Brighton business community was also supporting the club. The club, which has been on the site since 1931 and was instrumental in developing the course, already owned and ran the club house. GOLFER PACIFIC September 2015  29

Canterbury Golf and other industry experts have been supporting the club’s bid to stay open and viable. The successful outcome has resulted from a collaborative approach taken and led by Mene Mene, and ably supported by Secretary Sally Mene and Vice President/Treasurer Trevor Morris who have worked tirelessly on behalf of the club, its members and the local community.

CANTERBURY PLAYERS SELECTED FOR DEVELOPMENT CAMP NZ GOLF recently held their national development camp at the St Peters Golf facilities in Cambridge. Amelia Garvey, Hillary O’Connor, Juliana Hung and Jasmine Rou were fortunate to receive invitations to the camp along with Momoka Kobori who was unable to attend due to playing several events in America at the same time. Tom Parker was also selected to experience the camp for the first time. Canterbury Golf Development Manager Rachel Thow was also invited to attend to see first hand what the players were exposed to and learn valuable training and development tools to use in Canterbury to assist players. The three-day camp had the players working hard from fitness testing in the morning, golf during the day and sports psychology development in the evening. The players were captivated and challenged by Sports Psychologist David Galbraith in a session on the key ingredients to bake a cake for performance success. David has recently written a book “Unleashing Greatness” which has some great extracts from a number of world class athletes that David works with on their journey to excellence. Of the select few juniors that are invited to participate in the camp Canterbury had the most players from any district. A big thank you to NZ Golf and all the service providers for making this development opportunity available to our up-andcoming junior players. 

ROXBURGH ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT THERE was some wonderful golf over the two days of the recent Roxburgh Annual 30  GOLFER PACIFIC September 2015

Golf Tournament, and golfers were blessed with the most amazing weather: typical Central Otago, clear blue skies and sunshine with a touch of early morning frost on the greens on the Men’s 36 Hole Championship Day which delayed the start by half an hour. The Thursday 4BBB ladies Stableford day was cancelled – we just didn’t have quite enough entries. However we did persuade most of the ladies who had entered to register for Friday’s 4BBB Nett men/women/ mixed day which swelled the field to 104 and because of the shot gun start, we then closed off any more entries. 5 Ladies came from Clinton to “practise” as they were representing South Otago in the Ladies Otago Pennant Finals held on the Otago course the following Monday. It must have done them good as they proceeded to win this Championship. MEN’S 36 HOLE CHAMPIONSHIP THERE was a field of 94 in the Men’s 36 Hole Championship competition on the Saturday at Roxburgh Golf Club, with Nick Borren (Otago) hitting a 10 under par 58 to break the Roxburgh Golf Club course record. This tournament was also the first in a series of Otago trials for both seniors and masters. There was plenty of good golfing on this day – Matt Tautari (Southland), Chris Snow (St Clair) and Andrew Hobbs (Island Park) also playing very well. 2015 CHAMPIONS OF OTAGO PLAYED AT CHISHOLM LINKS THE Otago Golf Club can add the Otago champion of champions title to the senior A metropolitan pennant series after winning the event over 18 holes in wet and chilly conditions at Chisholm Links on Sunday 16th of September. The Balmacewen trio of Duncan Croudis, Kyle Clark and Alastair Adam finished with 70 gross stableford points to beat Taieri Lakes by a single point in a tight tussle.

Pictured is the Otago GC Winning Team Alastair Adam Duncan Croudis and Kyle Clarke. Arrowtown and Island Park finished in a tie for third on 68 while the Chisholm Links team was one further point back on 67. Duncan Croudis led the way for the Otago Club team, scoring a low 74 in the difficult conditions. He birdied the third hole but turned square with the card after making a bogey 5 on the sixth hole. Croudis made a double bogey six on the testing 12th hole and dropped a further shot on the par 3 14th to finish 3 over par. This gave Croudis 33 points while intermediate champion Kyle Clark chimed in with 20 points and Alastair Adam came in with 17 points. Taieri’s senior champion Mark Andrews carded 30 points while Michael Minty (Island Park) and Sean Geary (Chisholm Links) joined Lower Waitaki junior Johnny McKay with 28 points each.

TAUTARI & ORMANDY 2015 OTAGO FOURSOMES CHAMPIONS MICHAEL ORMANDY (North Otago) joined with Southland representative Mathew Tautari to score rounds of 70 and 74 and win the Otago men’s foursomes championship in fine conditions over 36 holes at Chisholm Links on Sunday 2 August. The pair finished three shots ahead of St Clair duo Brent McEwan and Greg Johnson while defending champions Michael Minty and Phil Bungard were two further shots back in third place. Ormandy and Tautari opened with a 1 under par 70 to hold a three shot lead over McEwan and Johnson and St Clair juniors Jakob Bleach and Connow Ross at lunch. But the chase for the title came down to the last five holes and, when Ormandy missed a 1m putt on the 14th green, he and Tautari trailed McEwan and Johnson

by one. Ormandy and Tautari made back to back birdies on 15 and 16 while McEwan and Johnson bogeyed the 15th giving the winners a two shot buffer. The battle was all but over when McEwan and Johnson made a double bogey six on the penultimate hole while Ormandy and Tautari parred in to take the title. Ormandy was pleased with the win but said he owed a lot to his Southland partner who was in great form throughout the day. Balmacewen professional Shelley Duncan teamed up with St Clair junior Annabel Evans to take the women’s title by four shots. The St Clair pair of Susan Greig and Abigael Crawford posted the best morning score of 77 to hold a two shot lead at lunch, but they lost form in the afternoon and fired an 87 to give Duncan and Evans the title. Duncan and Evans’ strength was their consistency – they scored 79 and 81 for their win.
