Behaviour on the golf course, both good and bad
B
By Paul Gueorgieff Editor, Golfer Pacific NZ
ehaviour on the golf course. It’s an often-discussed subject in the clubhouse. It’s almost always centred on bad behaviour. When was the last time you heard someone say how well someone was behaved? And it’s almost always centred on foul language or club throwing or usually both. First let me say that I’m no saint on the golf course. But at the same time I would like to think I tolerate my behaviour according to my company or the standing of the event. Amongst the boys on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I will admit
there can be the odd expletive. Okay, a little more than the odd. And for club throwing, I’ll admit to “letting go” the club occasionally. But that’s just Tuesdays and Thursdays with the boys when the atmosphere is very much casual. It’s casual to the extent that when we receive a fixed glare from a fellow player about to tee off because we are still talking, we usually respond: “Could you please not hit until we have finished talking.” But when it comes to playing a tournament, interclub competition or in mixed company I think everything changes. I can’t be bothered with foul language on television and I can’t be bothered with it on the golf course. The reason I raise this subject
follows an incident in a tournament which I played over the summer. The tournament was a Wellington order-of-merit event and in other words a reasonably important one, especially for the better players. One of the players pulled out of the two-day tournament after about nine holes because he was playing poorly. I thought this was an extremely poor attitude. We all play bad shots, we all play poorly but we all don’t give up. In fact, it is a measure of our attitude of how we can fight back, or soldier on, after a poor start. This reminded me of an incident in another Wellington order-of-merit event a couple of years ago. A one-handicapper had a four-over par eight on
the very first hole of the fourday tournament. Disastrous. He had blown his handicap for the whole tournament on the first of 72 holes. But guess what? He went on to win the tournament. Now that’s testament to great resolve. It also reminded me how you can judge a person through their attitude on the golf course. For example, anybody can be a good winner, all smiles, pleasant etc. But how many people are good losers? That doesn’t mean you are not allowed to be disappointed but you don’t have to throw your toys out of the cot. To be fair there are many good losers, it’s just the bad losers that are talked about. Mmmm, I might take up sports psychology.

t was the perfect example of Harry Hillier’s positive attitude. The Bay of Plenty teenage golfer was explaining in an interview with Golfer Pacific how the diagnosis of a rare disorder known as protein C deficiency robbed him of a highly-anticipated trip to play golf in Mexico. Hillier had been invited to Mexico by some golfing friends he had met on a visit to the United States and had planned to stay more than two months, including playing in the Mexico Amateur Championship. Everything had been booked, including flights, but then just a few days out from departure there was a heartbreaking phone call from medical advisors. Hillier, like his father, was found to have protein C deficiency which increases the risk of developing abnormal blood clots, such as deep vein thrombosis. Air travel and deep vein thrombosis don’t mix. “Three days out I get a phone call saying I can’t fly, that I might die,” Hillier dramatically recalled. He said not even domestic air travel could be considered which ruled him out of representing Bay of Plenty at the Interprovincials in Invercargill last December. But a couple of months down the track Hillier was able to pick out the positive of having to remain in New Zealand instead of dining out on tacos and chilli peppers. “I wouldn’t have won the North Island under 19s,” he said. The North Island under-19 Championship was held at Hamilton Golf Club last month, when he should have still been in Mexico, and Hillier ran out the winner to register his best result as a golfer. The way he won was another example of his positive attitude. Hillier scored a seven-over par 79 on the first of the three-day event and was a long way back in the field. “I think was about sixtieth,” Hillier recalled. His initial thoughts that any aspirations of winning were over. But then the positive kicked in. “I just thought go out tomorrow and take it shot by shot and see if I can work my way back in.” Tomorrow produced a brilliant four-under par 68 and he followed up with an even more brilliant
five-under par 67 on the final day. “Everything sort of clicked,” was Hillier’s simple explanation of his final two rounds. In one stretch of nine holes on the final day he reeled off seven birdies which he said ``was pretty exciting”. Hillier, 16, came to last hole knowing par would see him win the tournament and in the process beat his older brother Charlie, in the group ahead, by one shot. But all did not go to plan. “I hit my ball into the bunker and it was plugged. But I probably made the best up and down of my life. “I bounced the ball off the face (of the bunker), it dribbled down to about eight feet from the hole and I holed the putt to beat Charlie.” The win completed a great family double for the Hillier family. Charlie Hillier, now aged 19, won the same tournament in 2014. Charlie Hillier has returned to the United States where he attends the University of Kansas on a golf scholarship. Harry Hillier wants to do the same. “I’ll be looking to do something similar. I’ve already

had some offers but I’ll probably leave it for another 18 months.” There was no hesitation when asked what his ambition is. “To be a PGA Tour professional.” But he is also under no illusion some giant strides will need to be made. “It’s a very big step. It’s going to take hard work, dedication, gym, practice but I am willing to take up the challenge.’’ Hillier, lives in Te Puke and is a member of the Te Puke Golf Club. But he goes to the Auckland public golf course of Chamberlain Park for coaching with James Kupa. “I go there about once a fortnight and just work on the basics.” Hillier said he started playing golf at the age of 10 but earlier had said no to the game. “I used to caddy for dad, he loved playing golf. When I was about six or seven he said why don’t you play. I said nah. “A couple of years later I got a set of clubs and off I went.”

Seven NZers through to Australasian tour S
GOLF NEWS
even golfers from New Zealand have secured their cards on this year’s PGA Tour of Australasia after progressing through the final stage of a qualifying series in Melbourne. The seven were Fraser Wilkin, Daniel Pearce, Lachie McDonald, Mathew Perry, Nick Gillespie, Tae Koh and Vaughan McCall. They finished inside the qualifying mark of the top 40 players following four rounds at the Sandhurst Golf Club in Melbourne. Wilkin, from Auckland, was the best of the Kiwis. He finished 12th with a score of nine-under par. Next best was Pearce from Ashburton. Pearce had missed out on qualifying for the Web. com Tour in the United States and was relieved to get back on the Australasian tour for another season. “It’s a relief having my status back,” Pearce told Fairfax Media.
“I played so well last year but lost my card because I missed too many events towards the end of the year [from playing in China and trying to qualify for the Web.com]. I’m really excited about getting back out there this year.” Manawatu amateur McDonald (20th), a standout performer for his province in recent Interprovincial tournaments, former Australian Amateur Championship winner Koh (34th) and former New Zealand Amateur champion McCall (37th) all did enough to begin their professional careers. The news was not so good for Manawatu amateur Joshua Munn, a former New Zealand Amateur Champion and two-time winner on the New Zealand’s Charles Tour, and fellow Manawatu representative Tyler Hodge. They both missed the qualifying mark by one shot.

ew Zealand Golf is excited to announce that five leading amateurs are to turn professional effective immediately. Josh Munn (Manawatu), Vaughn McCall (Southland), Tae Koh (Auckland), Lachie McDonald (Manawatu) and Tyler Hodge (Manawatu) have all featured prominently in the New Zealand Golf Academy over the past few years have now made the decision to take their careers to the next level. New Zealand Golf High Performance Manager Gregg Thorpe is excited to see this talented group make the transition to professional golf and is looking forward to following their progress. “These guys have been competing at the high level of amateur golf and it has only been a matter of time before they were ready to make this decision. It is great to see them performing so well under the pressure of Q-School and make this transition with playing rights on the likes of the China and Australasian Tour,” said Thorpe.
4
“New Zealand Golf is proud of the development and success each of these players have had during their time as amateurs and I wish them every success as they take the next step towards their dream of becoming a professional golfer.” Golf in this country is on a high with Lydia Ko, Danny Lee and Ryan Fox all making big waves over the past few years and to have more amateurs make the step up will only add benefit to the sport. Munn, the number one New Zealand amateur and ranked 54th in the world amateur rankings who has competed at the US Amateur Champs as well as winning twice on the Jennian Homes Charles Tour has now gained exemption on the PGA Tour of China and the Australasian PGA Tour. However only by a whisker did he make the cut for the Australian PGA Tour. With players needing to make the top 40 to receive their card, Munn finished tied 40th with five others which made him very nervous, initially securing provisional playing rights. However he soon found out that was enough
to get through. Munn is a determined young golfer and made it very clear what his aim was. “I went over there with one goal, to get status in some tournaments over there and I achieved that,” said Munn. 24 year old Vaughan McCall has also been in a rich vein of form which has resulted in gaining full exemption on both the PGA Tour of China and the Australasian PGA Tour as well. McCall became the first golfer in 24 years to win both the New Zealand Stroke Play and New Zealand Amateur in the same year and the first Kiwi to complete that feat in 39 years. Southland’s number one has completed a couple of impressive weeks in China and Australia finishing 2nd and 33rd to make the qualifying marks with ease. The dream of the PGA Tour seems ever so closer. “The US PGA Tour have a feed-

ing tour called web.com, which is where I really want to play and the China Tour feeds into that, so that’s why I’ve picked and targeted China - because it holds my pathway into bigger events and bigger tours,” smiled McCall. “As you can imagine, I am thrilled to be taking this step in my career. I have received an enormous amount of support to date and I would like to thank everyone who has helped me to get to this point. I sincerely hope that support will continue to grow as I take my game to the next level. New Zealand’s number two amateur, Tae Koh has also decided to take the leap as he confirmed fhis status on the Australian PGA Tour finishing 34th last week. Koh has been a dominant amateur since winning the Australian Amateur in 2014, so we are looking forward to watching him progress as a professional. Manawatu seem to keep producing talented sportsmen in all forms. He is no Nehe Milner-Skudder, but Lachie McDonald has also had a very exciting year thus far. McDonald will be competing as a professional for the first time as soon as next week at the Victoria Open after also having a successful week at the final Q-School event for the Australian
PGA Tour. He has a good head on his shoulders coupled with simple goals for the year. “I have been playing a lot of golf so I was just going through my processes and not really thinking about what was on the line at the end of it,” said McDonald. “I want to do well enough to keep my card and not go back to Q-School next year. It is going to be a big year of learning, so I am not putting any pressure on myself.” Also hailing from the Manawatu region is Tyler Hodge who will be making the transition from rookie to professional. He too has a very good looking amateur CV. In 2012 he won the New Zealand Junior Championship and followed that up by winning the Australian Juniors in the same year proving his class. The Australasian Tour includes the New Zealand Open, the Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship, Australian Masters, the Fiji International, State Championships and Pro-Ams. New Zealand Golf has provided various levels of assistance to these players over the years and will continue to do so as they make the adjustment from rookie to professional. It’s a big and exciting step and we wish these young gentlemen all the best.

New Zealand tennis champion and a New Zealand hockey representative extended their sporting achievements when winning the men’s and women’s divisions of the New Zealand Mid-Amateur Championship at Mangahwai in Northland. The men’s division was won by former tennis professional Brett Steven while the women’s division went to Jill Morgan who played top level hockey for New Zealand. Steven was competing in his first Mid-Amateur and it came down to a matchplay-like finish with former North Harbour golf representative Ben Jujnovich. Steven had trailed Jujnovich by two shots after two rounds and the Mangawhai course provided a tough assignment over its 5924m. But Steven scored a solid one-over par 73 in the third round to beat Jujnovich by two strokes and take out the Neil Woodbury Cup trophy. Steven, who has a zero handicap, was even with the card in his opening first nine holes, but had a double bogey on the 11th and a bogey on the 13th. But there were also birdies on the par four 10th hole and the par three 17th. His scores for three rounds were 78, 72 and 73 for a total of 223. The win was Steven’s best result as a golfer. His previous best was finishing second in his club championships at Titirangi in Auckland. Steven, 46, was on the world
tennis circuit for 11 years, having turned professional in 1988. Top singles results included quarterfinals at the 1993 Australian Open, losing to Pete Sampras, and quarterfinals at the 1993 Canadian Masters and 1998 Rome Masters. He was a New Zealand representative at the 1996 Olympics in Georgia in the United States. His highest tennis world ranking was No 32. Steven now works as a wealth adviser, assisting clients with individual financial portfolios and family trusts. Jujnovich, from the Redwood Park club, held second with scores of 74, 74, 77 for a total of 225. Third on 228 was John Batley from Auckland with scores of 77, 72 and 79. The women’s division provided a comfortable win for Morgan who played hockey for New Zealand in 1978 and from 198184. Morgan had scores of 73, 75 and 77 for a three-round total of 225. That was a nine-over par for the par 72 course and eight strokes clear of her nearest rival. Morgan’s win added to a successful golfing career. She is a stalwart of the current women’s Waikato masters team, was awarded the best-placed women’s Masters individual in 2006 and is the reigning New Zealand Women’s Senior champion. In her wake at Mangawhai were many district representatives including eventual runner-up Debbie McCullum (Te

The current New Zealand Mid-Amateur series, managed under the auspices of New Zealand Golf by PaR nz Golfing Holidays combines the previous NZLGA Men’s Mid Amateur and the WGNZ Women’s Individual
Masters. The 54-hole tournament recognises best net and stableford results also. Men’s best net was awarded to Greg Quinn from Mangawhai with the runner-up, and last year’s tournament runner-up, Thai Leng (Remuera). Raymond Everitt (Warkworth) took the best stableford prize with Steven Leahey from Druids

GOLF FANS ARE BEING SHORT-CHANGED Dear sir, I too am unhappy with the state of golf coverage in New Zealand. Golf fans are being short-changed big time. I have got used to watching on my computer but (like Bruce in your last issue) I find it very restrictive and far inferior to My Sky. Coliseum Sports has now dropped

the European Tour and all Sky will say is they are “negotiating” the rights. Just this last week we had the Abu Dhabi HSBC tournament with a star-studded field including McIlroy, Spieth and Fowler. But all we can do is read the results in the newspaper. I realise I am in the minority in that I prefer the European Tour to the PGA
Tour in the United States but surely even third-world countries get access to all. Last year’s Coliseum subscription was $149 and this year it is $199 – a 25 percent increase with a 30 percent drop in content (looking at the three main tours, ET, PGA and LPGA). NZ Golf chairman Paul Fyfe steps down GOLF NEWS
P
AUL FYFE has retired from the board of New Zealand Golf following nearly 10 years on the executive, including three years as chairman. Fyfe led the board through some of its most progressive and transformative years. That included a prolonged period of influence where significant progress was made. In particular was the great progress with the management of the New Zealand Open Championships, for both men and women. In addition there was the development of the community golf programme and subsequent international recognition and funding from the Royal & Ancient and the progression of discussions with the New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association on a possible merger. Fyfe also led the relationship with our neighbours, Golf Australia, which has strengthened considerably. He was also largely responsible for convincing Augusta National and the R&A to bring the Asia-Pacific Amateur to New Zealand in 2017. Two new faces join the New Zealand Golf board this year. They are Maryanne Marlow (Canterbury and Otago) and Matthew Kenny (Wellington).
Marlow has an extensive medical career, including as a general practitioner working in both primary and secondary care. However, more recently Marlow has been involved with a large family business which is an apparel based and commercial property development. She has also been involved in various golf club administration roles and for the past five years held a district governance position with Canterbury Golf. Kenny is a Wellington-based chief financial officer with extensive experience in accounting, finance and governance. Golf has been a passion of Kenny’s for some time with previous interclub and golf club committee experience. To complete the NZ Golf board for 2016, the board appointments’ panel recently convened to consider the applications received for the one appointed director position available from January 1. From the high calibre of applications received, the appointments’ panel determined that Murray Ward was the outstanding candidate. The panel believed Ward had a skill set and experience level that was strongly desired by the organisation and as such resolved to re-appoint him to the board for a further term.
Given that Fyfe effectively retired as chairman at the end of 2015, the board elected Ward to chair the board until February 15 when the new board meets for the first time. At this meeting the board will confirm its chairperson for 2016.
New Zealand Golf expressed its sincere thanks for the service of Fyfe and another outgoing director, Eileen Bateup. The board said it was incredibly thankful for their significant contributions and acknowledges their many years of volunteer service.

Countdown to Olympics is well under way By Dean Murphy New Zealand Golf Chief Executive
W
e are now well into 2016 and the Olympic Games at Rio de Janeiro in Brazil are now only a matter of months away. Though golf has not featured in the Olympics since 1904, the sport will now be part of the programme for at least the 2016 and 2020 Olympic Games. Qualification will be based on world rankings as of July 11 of this year, with a total of 60 players qualifying in each of the men’s and women’s events. The top 15 players in the world of each gender will qualify, with a limit of four golfers per country that can qualify this way. The remaining spots will go to the highest-ranked players from countries that do not already have two golfers qualified. The International Golf Federation (IGF) has guaranteed that at least one golfer from the host nation and each geographical region (Africa, the Americas,
Asia, Europe, and Oceania) will qualify. The IGF posts weekly lists of qualifiers based on current rankings for men and women on its website of igfgolf.org. Once the field of 60 for each gender is set by the IGF, the local New Zealand Olympic Committee (NZOC) will decide whether to select the golfers that have qualified to compete as part of the New Zealand team. Traditionally, the NZOC selects athletes which it believes have the ability to finish inside the top 16 in their field in the Olympic context. For golf, this presents some issues given the Olympic golf fields are unique and there is no other comparable events played under the Olympic exemption criteria in either the women’s or men’s game. Additionally, unlike most Olympic sports, the highest ranked players in golf do not win each time they compete. By contrast the fastest ranked 100-metre runner in the world usually wins each time he or she races. Same for most oth-

er Olympic sports. But golf is just not like this and even when Tiger Woods was at his absolute peak, he still won only around 20 percent of the events he competed in. This was a remarkable achievement but a very low percentage compared to other Olympic sports. As it currently stands, Lydia Ko, Danny Lee and Ryan Fox are all comfortably siting inside the field of 60. However, Lydia Ko (as the world’s number one player) is the only New Zealander who ranks inside the world top 16 and is certain of selection by the NZOC. Danny Lee and Ryan Fox have showed they can compete (and win) at the very highest level on the world stage and we at New Zealand Golf are confident these players will be selected if they do remain inside the IGF field of 60 for the Olympic Games. Our organisation has been keeping statistics for a good number of years on the probability of players ranked outside the top 16 winning in events where

the average world ranking of players is higher than what the Olympic field will be. We are confident that if players are eligible for the field of 60 that they will be selected by the NZOC. In addition to the players mentioned above, there are a number of other players fighting their way up the world rankings and it promises to be an exciting run into early July when the final field and selections will be confirmed. I’m personally extremely excited about the prospect of New Zealand golfers competing for gold in Rio. There are a number of people who have been reasonably negative about the reintroduction of golf to the Olympic programme. However, I can’t see how it will be anything but good for our game. I know the athletes are excited to compete for New Zealand at an Olympic Games and I am sure a whole new audience will see golf in a new light after the huge profile that will be generated for the sport.

Can golf top the Halberg Awards? By Andrew Whiley A voice from the south
T
he 53rd Halberg Awards will take place at the Vector Arena in Auckland on February 18. I have been in attendance for the past two events and I am again looking forward to attending the next one. Hopefully, as you read this article, you’ll already know the results and we will be toasting Lydia Ko and probably Danny Lee. I was fortunate to attend in 2014 when Lydia Ko was the 2013 Supreme Award winner and last year, she claimed the High Performance Sport New Zealand Sportswoman of the Year for a second year. So, I will be excited to see if Lydia will win the 2015 Supreme Award again. However, more interestingly, I am anxious to see if golf can pull off the double with Danny being nominated for the High Performance Sport New Zealand Sportsman of the Year against a world class line-up including Dan Carter, Scott Dixon, Dexter Dunn and Kane Williamson
amongst others. Golf will be the winner regardless of the outcome. For many years, golf didn’t have a single person nominated for the awards. I believe that Danny Lee is a serious contender for the Sportsman of the Year award. Why, you may ask? That’s because last July, Danny was seen as the second hottest player on the planet, having recently celebrated his win at the PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia. This was the first PGA Tour event won by a Kiwi since Michael Campbell had won the US Open in 2005. In his first 26 events, Danny had a best finish, tied for third, and had amassed only 683 Fedex (order of merit) points. Then he wins and collects 500 points and proceeds to pick up another 1633 points in his next 10 events (totalling 2133). His performance at the Tour Championship, where he finished second, was outstanding and outside of Jordan Spieth and Jason Day, he was the best player on the PGA Tour last year from July 1 through to the end of September.
This proved that Danny’s win wasn’t a fluke and it was great to see him perform at the President’s Cup in South Korea, albeit narrowly losing to Dustin Johnson. I would anticipate him having a strong year in 2016. Has Danny done enough to win the Sportsman of the Year award? I would like to think so, but there were some outstanding results especially from Dan Carter and Scott Dixon. So what about Lydia? I believe her results in 2015 were also outstanding and I don’t think we appreciate what a superstar she has become on the golfing stage. To win a major at the age of 18 is almost unbelievable. To also win five times on the LPGA tour and be the world’s number one deserves her to be crowned New Zealand’s Supreme Award winner. And I sincerely believe that this is a greater achievement than the All Blacks winning the World Cup. In my opinion, the story that really hasn’t been highlighted is the achievement of winning a major at the age of 18. The only person to better this achieve-

ment was Tom Morris junior, who at the age of 17, won the 1868 British Open. However, to my way of thinking, this doesn’t count as he beat only 11 other golfers, all of whom were from Scotland, meaning that it wasn’t really an “open” event at all. In my humble opinion, I believe that Lydia is going to dominate the ladies’ game over the next five years as she gets comfortable with the responsibilities of being the world’s number one player, and as she also gains even more confidence with her ability to stare down her rivals on the golf courses around the world. Every golfer in the South Island should try and make the effort to attend the NZ Women’s Open this year, just to watch her play. In 10 months time, I predict we will see them both being recognised at the Halberg Awards again in February 2017. Then to follow, we will be celebrating both Lydia Ko and Danny Lee and their results on the global golfing stage. Mark my words.

Let’s cheer home a Kiwi winner By Duncan Simpson New Zealand PGA Chief Executive
W
ith New Zealand’s two premier men’s golf tournaments coming up in March, it’s time for golf fans to come to Auckland and Queenstown and support one of the strongest local line-ups seen for many years. It looks like 13 of the top 15 ranked New Zealand players will tee it up in both the New Zealand Open in Queenstown (March 10– 13), and the Holden New Zealand PGA Championship at Remuera Golf Club in Auckland from March 3– 6. Hopefully both will see the crowning of a New Zealand victor – certainly it’s been a long time between drinks at the NZ Open, with the last local winner being Mahal Pearce at Royal Auckland in 2003. Our recent record in the PGA Championship is much better, thanks to Steven Alker’s win at Clearwater, Christchurch, in 2009, and Michael Hendry’s back-toback wins in 2012 and 2013 at The Hills in Queenstown. However, the strong New Zealand con-
tingent will face stiff international competition from several quarters, including defending champion Matthew Millar from Australia. Millar won his first PGA Tour of Australasia title at Remuera and played strongly through the rest of the year, finishing third on the order of merit table. He will be just one of around 20 hardened Australian professionals, any one of whom could take out the title. Or it could be a bolter just like Jordan Zunic, who last year had to pre-qualify for the PGA Championship, finished in the top 10 and used it as a stepping stone to winning the NZ Open and finishing second on the order of merit. Then there is a small but high quality group of Japan Tour players, including Daisuke Kataoka and Toshinori Muto who could see a second Japanese name on the trophy, the first being Jumbo Ozaki’s in 1972. There are Korean players Hong Soon Sang and Kim Byung Jun who can’t be counted out, and there will be a European Tour presence through South Afri-
can Dylan Fritelli. The New Zealand challenge in the PGA Championship will be led by home-town hero Ryan Fox, but he is only one of several locals with excellent credentials. Fans will welcome the chance to see 2015 PGA Tour player Steven Alker back in the country, and it would be great to see a similar Kiwi trifecta as in 2009, when Josh Geary and David Smail filled the next two places in what was then a Nationwide Tour event. Michael Hendry will have something to say as well: he bounced back from missing the cut in last year’s PGA Championship to secure his first Japan Tour victory, and has been in great early form this year on the NZ Pro-Am circuit. Josh Geary will likewise be looking for a springboard to boost his Web.Com Tour campaign in 2016. Look out also for players like Sean Riordan, Doug Holloway, Jim Cusdin, Jared Pender, Gareth Paddison, Daniel Pearce, Brad Shilton, Michael Long and Harry Bateman, who all have the ability and depth of experience to lift the McDougall Cup on Sunday, March 6.
The leading New Zealand player will also get his name on the Sir Bob Charles Trophy, which debuted in 2015 with Josh Geary as the winner. The Kiwi contingent will all get a huge lift from their local support base, especially at Remuera where spectators have the chance to get inside the ropes and walk the fairways with their favourite groups, or mingle in the excellent hospitality areas with family and friends. Admission prices are very family friendly at both venues, with under 18s getting in free and – at Remuera – enjoying free parking right next to the golf course. Both tournaments follow shortly after the Australian cricket team’s tour of New Zealand. Wouldn’t it be great to follow our home team’s success there with a couple of emphatic performances on our own golf courses? Or if the cricket hasn’t gone according to plan, we will at least have the chance to see the trans-Tasman balance restored in our favour – but you need to be there in Auckland or Queenstown to enjoy the moment.

GOLFCOACHING

What is your 15th Club? By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional
W
e asked this question in the shop a while ago and got some interesting answers. We all know that the legal amount of clubs is 14 but what’s something that’s so important to you that you could call them your 15th club? Some of the answers we received were your coach and the mental game which should both be assets to any golfer but it’s not the physical item that we think could be your 15th club if it’s not already. Got you thinking? What we are talking about are GPS units or lasers. When I look at members and visitors heading out for a game I
would say close to 30% or more players have their own GPS or laser units. This number seems to be increasing more and more as people learn the benefits of owing such devices. I think it can be said that if you don’t have one currently, you are missing out. We do get some negative comments from traditionalists of the game that its cheating and takes too long but a GPS unit only takes a glance to see what distance you have. Yes, the laser takes a bit more effort but again it doesn’t take too long once you are used to using them. So what should you get, a GPS or laser? Its my opinion that a GPS should be used generally by mid to high handicaps
and ages 40 and up. Why I say that is that if we all have lasers it may take longer to play a round plus a GPS provides big numbers that are easy to read. The bonus with a GPS is that you can stray behind a tree etc and still get measurements to the front, middle and back. The one downfall currently is that a GPS measurement can be up to 5 metres out. And that’s one of the differences with a laser unit, its accurate to the flag. If you are a single figure golfer, take your game quite seriously and want an exact distance for your shots the laser is the one. You do generally pay more for a laser unit as they can reach around the $599.00 mark where GPS units go from a
basic price of $229 to $500 a unit. Seems a lot but I feel it can potentially take 2-3 shots off your score plus you won’t have to guess any more. Reading this, if you say to yourself that you don’t know your distances you hit each club so how can this help you, you need to turn your thinking around. With practice and play on the course, using either of these devices will give you that knowledge. Golf is golf, meaning most of us golfers don’t hit every shot the same distance, but we should aim to. Every shot’s aim should be the best shot of your life as one day, it will be. Shop online for your next GPS unit at www.100percentgolf.com.

e are delighted to announce that TSB Bank has joined us as a Major Sponsor for our next tournament in May,
2016. TSB Bank Nelson Festival Of Golf has received sponsorship funding for this year’s event from the Nelson Events Marketing & Development Programme, which is funded by Nelson City Council. The Programme’s objective is to stimulate Nelson City’s economy in the shoulder and off seasons by bringing new spending through visitors coming to Nelson for district events.” For further information contact NEMDP Chair, Bill Findlater on 03 545 6858. One of the ‘must play’ events in the New Zealand golfing calendar, the TSB Bank Nelson Festival of Golf has it all - one round of teamplay in teams of four, followed by three rounds of individual stableford competition in separate divisions. There will be one women’s division and two men’s divisions. On offer will be daily stableford prizes per division, as well as an overall daily gross prize per division. With a varied array of prizes on offer, we’re delighted to again be offering all competitors the chance to win a car for getting a hole in one, on the allotted holes during the tournament. Our long putt competition will again bring lots of fun to the week, and with a major prize at the end of it, it’s worth getting on that practice green early. Winners will be decided on each player’s accumulated total from the three individual rounds played. As in previous years we are again putting up some great novelty prizes and lucky draws to keep everyone in the hunt for a reward. After suffering a couple of windy days during our previous events in late October, we have moved the tournament to a new date on the calendar in the hope of providing entrants the beautiful weather that our region is famed for. Hopefully the new dates in early May will offer playing conditions that will provide competitors with chances to shoot great scores in calmer conditions – Making entry to the TSB Bank Nelson Festival of Golf a great competition for players of all abilities to enter. The Major Prize Giving will take place in the Nelson Clubhouse in the evening hosted by The 19th Cafe & Bar. Nelson Golf Links: A wonderful golf course which has recently hosted both the NZ Amateur Championships and the NZ Senior Championships. eveloping knowledge and drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as dragonfly wings and 18-wheelers, PING today launched its new G series of drivers, fairway woods, hybrids and irons, again advancing speed, distance and forgiveness to unprecedented levels without sacrificing other performance attributes. This year PING went one step further, creating a new club category with the G Crossover, combining the best of hybrid and iron technology. The new products, which are all custom fit and built to precise specifications, can be pre-ordered beginning today at PING-authorized golf shops around the world. “It’s a credit to the imagination and the disciplined approach of our engineering, design and research teams that we’ve elevated performance across every category in new and exciting ways, innovation that will make the game easier for golfers of every ability level,” said John A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “Our design process is different, as we gather information from the world around us, study new materials, and test rigorously to make sure our products give golfers meaningful results. The process leads to breakthroughs like Dragonfly Technology and Vortec Technology, found in the G drivers. We’ve also created a specialized heat-treatment process and COREye Technology to make the G irons longer, higher-launching and more forgiving, a combination that’s very difficult to achieve. And with the new Crossover product line, an entirely new category, there’s a lot to be excited about.”

close-up photograph of a dragonfly taken by Solheim was the inspiration for the primary innovation in the driver. Solheim was intrigued by the wing structure and shared the photo with a group of engineers. Inspired by biomimicry, an approach to innovation that emulates nature’s time-tested patterns, they created Dragonfly Technology. The complex exoskeleton design yields PING’s thinnest (0.43 mm) and lightest crown to date, saving eight grams while creating an intricate and stable structure. The weight savings helped drive the center of gravity lower and deeper than any PING driver, increasing dynamic loft and elevating MOI significantly for maximizing distance and forgiveness. Researchers also studied the base flaps that minimize largescale vortex shedding behind 18-wheel

semi-trailers and integrated their learnings into the G drivers to improve aerodynamics and increase speed. Vortec Technology on the back of the club and turbulators on the crown contribute to reducing drag 37% in the impact zone, yielding greater clubhead speed and ball velocity for measurable distance gains from all swing speeds. The variable-thickness T9S face has a high strength-to-weight ratio, allowing for a thin face to increase ball speed. Golfers can optimize launch conditions prior to a round by adjusting loft up to +/- 1º with five settings utilizing a lightweight, aerodynamically efficient and high-strength 7075 aluminum hosel sleeve. The G SF Tec driver is custom-engineered with weight closer to the heel to produce a right-to-left shot bend (for right-handed golfers) and steer the ball back into the fairway. The G LS Tec driver features a CG that is extremely low (slightly forward of the standard G driver), for the player who desires low, stable spin with forgiveness. »» Lofts 9° & 10.5° in standard and LS Tec heads, 10° & 12° in SF Tec head. he G iron utilizes revolutionary COR-Eye Technology (introduced in the GMax irons), which activates the sole, face and top rail in flexing for consistently faster ball speeds across the hotter face. The entire G set is heat treated using a specialized process that creates Hyper 17-4 alloy, which is 40% stronger than traditional 17-4 stainless steel. Metallurgical advancements combined with COR-Eye Technology provide four times the face flexing with improved stability. “The results are big distance gains and a higher peak trajectory for better stopping power so you can hit and hold the green,” Solheim said. “One benefit of that is a player might be able to club up and hit a 7-iron, for example, instead of a 6-iron.” Weight saved from the face was allocated to the low toe and perimeter, creating a high MOI for extreme forgiveness. Connecting the Custom Tuning Port to the sole creates a deeper CG that helps elevate the launch angle while increasing MOI. At address, the iron’s refined look is created by a thin top rail, satin-blast finish and appropriate offset. An enlarged multi-material damping badge joined to the cavity
works with COR-Eye Technology to provide exceptional sound and feel. New AWT 2.0 shaft (Manufactured by Nippon) Contributing to the improved performance of the G iron are PING’s proprietary Ascending Weight Technology shafts, an optimal combination of physics and feel. The shafts get lighter as they progress from the short irons and pitching wedge to the long irons. Lighter long-iron shafts help square the clubface to increase clubhead speed and optimize flight for distance and accuracy. Heavier short iron shafts improve trajectory control and feel. »» Available 4-9, PW, UW, SW, LW »» Stock steel shaft: PING AWT 2.0 (R, S, X) »» After-market stock shaft options (no upcharge): Dynamic Gold S300, X100; Project X 5.0, 6.0; XP 95 (R, S), N.S. CROSSOVER
P
ING created a new category – the Crossover – to combine the precision, workability and control of an iron with the ball speed and forgiveness of a hybrid. “People love the look and feel of the Crossover because they haven’t seen anything like it,” Solheim said. “It shouldn’t be confused with a driving iron; it’s higher-launching and much more forgiving, and offers a lot of versatility. Our extensive player testing has revealed this to be a very attractive option.” The high-strength Carpenter 455® steel face is precision machined to an optimal thickness for greater face flexing, faster ball speeds and longer results. The flat face, narrow top rail and appropriate offset deliver iron-like accuracy and workability. An innovative cascading internal sole engages the entire face, sole and top rail in flexing to maximize distance. Extreme heel-toe weighting helps locate the center of gravity low-back and expands the perimeter weighting to create a high MOI for maximizing forgiveness.

early all golfers struggle getting the ball in the air easily with fairway woods. To solve that, the G fairway woods have a lower lead edge that yields 12% higher face impact, relative to the G30 series. “The face sits lower so it’s much easier to hit the ball high in the air,” Solheim said. “Contact occurs higher on the face, which makes this club perform beautifully off the ground and tee.” High-strength Carpenter 455® steel allows for a thinner,

precision-machined, variable-thickness face. The cascading sole design engages more of the structure in face flexing, resulting in faster ball speeds and higher launch. Our thinnest crown ever in a fairway wood means discretionary weight has been used to move the CG lower and farther back, making it easier to get the ball airborne. A unique process adds friction to the face for reduced spin. Crown turbulators provide a captured appearance and help with aim and alignment. Golfers can optimize launch conditions prior to a round by adjusting loft up to +/- 1º with five settings utilizing a lightweight, aerodynamically efficient and high-strength 7075 aluminum hosel sleeve. The G SF Tec fairway woods have weight closer to the heel, a lighter swing weight, and higher lofts to produce right-to-left shot bend for players whose typical miss is to the right. The G Stretch 3 is custom-engineered to stretch a player’s distance off the tee and on shots into the green with its larger head, slightly forward CG, 13º loft, and reduced spin.

The course consists of a 18 hole, par 70 course, of 5,800 metres providing variety and challenge with many holes played over or around both dormant and active thermal areas. ing tee shot over an attractively designed large pond. A straight shot will miss the large trees to the right and a bunker to the left, not too many problems on a calm day. With spectacular water views in the background, and the green positioned on a small knoll, the wind factor greatly determines the club selection and can have a dramatic effect on any given day.
14th Par-3 | 186m
THE signature hole on Rotorua’s Arikikapakapa course is undoubtedly the parthree 14th. This hole is extremely picturesque and can play as difficult as it is beautiful. From the elevated tee you need to hit across a thermal lake to a generous green, however it is virtually all carry and

plays its full distance, particularly if you’re playing into any sort of breeze. Any errant shot right of the green will bring big trouble, so it’s best to favour the left side of the green. It is certainly a memorable hole and to make par or better is very satisfying.

Located just half an hour from Manukau, you can enjoy the peace of the country while still being close to Auckland at Maramarua Golf Club. You will also experience one of the best golf courses in the region. The eighth hole at Maramarua requires a long tee shot to the right of a wide fairway. The fairway has trees on both sides, which protect out of bounds on the far right and a hazard on the left. Shots to the left hand side don’t get a shot at the green as this is blocked by mature pine trees.
Having placed your 220m-plus drive on the right-hand side of the fairway you have a daunting approach shot over a rock-surrounded pond to a two-tiered green. If the pin is on the top level the landing area is small. Here you will be faced with the decision whether to aim for the top and risk an overshot of play to the lower area and guarantee a difficult two putt. Either way, it’s one heck of a hole!

THIS feature hole is a relatively easy par five when playing with a southerly breeze but can be a monster during a strong north westerly. February 2016
THE Mount Michael Central Otago Autumn Golf Classic is set to be held from 11th -15th of April 2016. Entries will close on March 1, 2016 or when 500 entries have been received (entries stand at 435 at the time of printing). Affectionately referred by Local Golfer’s as “Central” the founding philosophy from the five courses is to provide golfer’s from around the country and overseas five very different and exceptionally interesting eighteen hole golf courses at Alexandra, Arrowtown, Cromwell, Queenstown and Wanaka Golf Clubs. Played over five stunning, picturesque and unique golf courses. These golf courses are all unique and have evolved over many years being created out of the natural Central Otago landscape. The combined years of existence of the Golf clubs total in excess of 500 years. It is no wonder with the Quality Golf course investment like Millbrook, The Hills, Jack’s Point and soon Parkin’s Bay decided that Central Otago is the best place in New Zealand to develop their magnificent golfing establishments. They are all within one hour of each other and provide a varied and interesting trip before and after your round of golf. The event now in its fifth year has been a phenomenal success. “Our first classic in April 2012 attracted a field of 242 and from then on we have been thrilled with our ability to attract good fields, obviously from comments and reports made these golfers thoroughly enjoyed their week. Entries are now topping 500,” said Tournament Director John Roche. “Our intention is to close entries once 500 have been received, this will enable us to keep to our basic ideology of not overcrowding the golf courses, with 100 players on each course each day, starting play off multiple tees at 10.00am the rounds should be played in reasonable time,” he said. John Roche explained the principles behind the event. “The Autumn Classic is not just another golf tournament but rather a true golfing classic for genuine club golfers. The organisers run the event and do all the work and planning. Players relax, enjoy the golf and the companionship of other like minded competitive golfers in an environment that has to be seen to believe; that is “central” in the Autumn!
Guidelines as to eligibility of players has been strictly enforced and for the 2016 Classic the maximum handicap that can enter is 36 for women and 32 for men. A true handicap must be based on 20 cards currently recorded on NZ Golf records. Prizes in excess of $40,000 will be played for during the week, with daily and five round stableford competitions, plus gross section for senior golfers. Daily divisions have maximum of 50 players with women in separate divisions to men and prizes are awarded one to every four players. The prizes awarded over total of five rounds are in handicap sections with again 50 players in each section. There are also Gross prizes over the five rounds with men and women in separate divisions. Of great interest and possible the most popular section is the teams of four. Each day the best three stableford points of the four are taken as the teams total and at the conclusion of the fifth round the most stableford points are the winners. In three divisions, Women only, Mixed (two women and two men) and Men only. However many golfers enter as a single and will be placed into a team by the organisers. Karts and Push Trundlers are available at all five courses, selected accommodation specials at Queenstown is also available, buses will travel to golf courses and return to Queenstown every day if you so desire and tournament shirts can be ordered when entering. Here’s a sample of over 200 messages received from previous happy attendees: “Fabulous locations, courses well presented, friendly like minded people looking to have a great time together, very good value for the money!” “Meeting new people in post card perfect settings.” “The format and organisation was spectacular from beginning to end.” »» We are delighted to offer you the opportunity to play in our 2016 Mount Michael Central Otago Autumn Golf Classic, just get an entry form! QUEENSTOWN GOLF CLUB (KELVIN HEIGHTS) • Blue 6072m • White 5839m • Ladies 5173m • Red 4156 EVER seen a post-card of Queenstown? If so then it has probably been taken from the gondola and features the Kelvin Heights peninsula. This is home to the Queenstown golf club which is a picturesque golf club that offers not only views of the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu but an exciting challenge of golf. The “Jewel” in the crown of New Zealand golf courses is the Queenstown Golf Club located 20 minutes from Queenstown. It is one of New Zealand’s iconic golf clubs and a ‘must play’ for all golfers visiting the region. The Course is surrounded by lake Wakatipu and cradled by stunning mountains ranges so every tee and green has a view which makes it hard to keep your head down! Signature holes take on a whole new level at the Queenstown golf club especially the 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th, 14th and 17th which could be signature holes on any course. With a proud and loyal membership base, Queenstown golf club has a long history
and welcomes visitors year round. Equipped with 36 modern motorised carts, 2 Professionals, Pro shop, 7 day a week Café specialising in home-made faire and fully licenced Bar ensures all your golfing needs are met and exceeded. The signature hole and probably one of the more scenic photographs on a New Zealand golf course would be the par 4 5th that curves left around the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu to an elevated green. Driving line is key as an over aggressive line combined with a misstimed drive will see you ending up in the drink, however the hole sets up for a right to left shaped drive which will carve yardage off your approach shot. The facilities are excellent, carts and club hire available from the pro shop. Green fees range from $75-95 depending on seasons. »» www.queenstowngolf.co.nz »» Kelvin Heights Queenstown 9300 »» Phone: 03-442 9169
WANAKA GOLF CLUB • Blue 5743m • White 5474m • Ladies 5038m A SHORT 50-minute scenic drive from Queen-
stown, the township of Wanaka is a stunning and tranquil holiday destination in the heart of the Queenstown Lakes region. Perched above the picturesque township is the lovely Wanaka golf club; the biggest club in Otago and Southland with nearly 1000 members. Host to the NZ Mixed foursomes in 2016, the NZ Women’s Seniors in 2012 and Men’s in 2009, Wanaka Golf Club boasts a well maintained, charming and challenging layout, with great value for money. Measuring 5743m (blues) and 5474m (whites) the course isn’t long by modern standards, but careful course management and the ability to shape your shots is important if you want to score well. The small greens and natural contours of the land also present their own challenge, so playing safe to the middle of the greens is recommended. It’s also important to try and keep your eye on the ball, as the spectacular views across the town and lake to Mount Aspiring National Park are some of the best in New Zealand, and can certainly add an extra distraction to your game. The two nines are very different. The front-nine, which was established in the 1930s, features an undulating layout with small greens nestled amongst the rolling terrain. The back nine, which was added across the road in 1967, is much longer and slightly flatter—but no less spectacular. The club has progressed significantly in the past decade with capital improvements and course upgrades, making it one of the most scenic and playable courses around. The club features all the usual facilities you’d expect from a quality golf club, including club and cart hire, fully-stocked pro shop, driving range and a café and bar. »» www.wanakagolf.co.nz »» Email: wanaka@golf.co.nz »» Phone: +64 3 443 7888
ALEXANDRA GOLF CLUB • Blue 6000m • White 5718m • Ladies 5179m ALEXANDRA lies in the beautiful Manuherikia valley at the confluence of the Manuherikia and Clutha rivers. Surrounded by the high mountain ranges of the Old Man, Dunstan and Hawkduns, and with the barren Knobby Range as its background, this is a special part of Central Otago featuring stunning scenery, great history as well as plenty of things to do for golfers and non golfers alike. The pines bordering the golf course along State Highway 8 were originally planted to contain the desert sands that prevailed in the area. Most find it hard to imagine that today’s stunning golf course could be created from such beginnings. The course features a flat but undulating desert type terrain with fully irrigated fairways from tee to green. Narrow fairways mean accuracy is of prime importance if you are to avoid the desert remnants in the rough and the many trees lining the fairways. Of interest, and one reason why golfers find their round at Alexandra appears to go so quickly, is the lack of continuous holes of same par value! Only twice in the 18 holes do you play consecutive holes of equal par!

CROMWELL GOLF CLUB • Blue 6234m • White 5844m • Ladies 5204m THE Cromwell Golf Course is located in the centre of Cromwell township. At 200km from the coast the 18-hole tournament course is further from the coast than any other New Zealand course. It is widely considered to be one of the best inland links courses in New Zealand ranking #9 South Island Course in the New Zealand Golf Course Rankings 2014 and currently plays host to the New Zealand Open Final Qualifier. Situated near Lake Dunstan in the heart of the fastest growing wine region in the country, the course is one that will challenge the championship player, while providing plenty of enjoyment
including exciting doglegs, reachable par 5’s which the longer hitter loves, and tricky par 3’s that punish wayward tee shots. Green fees are $50-$75 with club, trundler and electric carts available for hire. »» www.cromwellgolf.co.nz »» Cromwell 9310, New Zealand »» Phone: 03 445 0165
for the longer handicapper. The upgrade completed in 2009 has created a fantastic golf experience from tee to green. Cromwell’s low rainfall, 2200 hours of sunshine per year and sand based fairways combine to guarantee year-round dry underfoot conditions. From the tee the open driving holes can be problematic where the prevailing Nor-wester can take hold of any erratic shots. The rough is a challenge, mainly because of the sandy lies or the Marram grass while the large greens have challenging contours and one of the best putting surfaces you could hope to find. The par 4, 18th is a great finishing hole playing 415m off the black tees. Into the wind your drive is challenging and requires a well struck ball to get you into the valley which is guarded by bunkers either side of the fairway. The approach shot to the green funnels into the basin green but care is required to avoid the front-right green-side bunker. There are a number of other unique holes on the course
ARROWTOWN GOLF CLUB • White 5495m • Ladies 5035m ARROWTOWN GOLF CLUB is the jewel in the crown literally as it sits below the Crown Range and runs alongside the famous Arrow river which over 100 years ago was once a hive of activity during the gold rush era. The course borders the outskirts of Arrowtown which is about 20km from the centre of Queenstown and offers stunning views of some well known ski fields, the Remarkables and Coronet Peak. If you are lucky enough to play on this hidden gem then you’ll will no doubt be blown away by the unique layout of the course as the narrow rolling fairways weave their way through valleys and rocky pillars very much like Roxburgh golf club. In the summertime the Browntop grass in the long rough is left to seed, leaving a colour scheme that represents a truly natural setting and makes the course look like a postcard. In 2012 the course won the New Zealand Golf Course Superintendants
Association (NZGCSA) Environment award which recognises New Zealand’s leading golf course in relation to their environmental management practices. The club under took the removal of wilding trees and broom, while re-establishing Matagouri amongst the schist rock outcrops. From a playability perspective, the course is the shortest out of the top 5 but probably requires the most accuracy from tee to greens. Again like Wanaka, Roxburgh and North Otago, the greens are very small. However for any big hitters, there are a lot of risk and reward holes that can provide a lot of birdies but also double bogeys and beyond. One of the best holes is the 18th which requires a blind shot over a hill to a fairway that slopes to the left towards a pond. A good drive leaves only a wedge shot to the green and a good birdie opportunity however getting a good drive away is the key. Club hire is available and green fees are $75. »» www.arrowtowngolf.co.nz/ »» 166 Centennial Ave, Arrow Junction 9371 »» Phone: 03-442 1719

NORTH HARBOUR DEFEAT JACK NEWTON TEAM IN ANNUAL CHALLENGE
The North Harbour Junior Team played their annual match against the Jack Newton Team from Australia on January 11th at the Gulf Harbour Country Club. 5 girls and 5 boys from each team were paired up against their opponent based on their age and handicap. All players played the full 18 holes receiving 2 points for a hole win, 1 for a half and 0 for a loss. In a gripping match that came right down to the last few holes North Harbour narrowly
finished ahead to win 182 points to 178. Both teams thoroughly enjoyed meeting some new friends as well as the challenge of the Gulf Harbour Golf Course on what was a beautiful day on the Whangaparaoa coast. The annual match is now into its third year and North Harbour are very excited that the Jack Newton Team have continued to travel to our district and are committed to helping develop young players in both regions.

AUCKLAND TRAILS IT’S HAMMER AND NAILS AND BAREFOOT GOLF AT MAXWELL’S
“You don’t hit a nail until you hit it! Hit the ball and go through the ball!” That’s what 92-year-old Arthur Avis was taught by his coach many years ago. Kaye Maxwell told Golfer Pacific, “he hadn’t been for a few months due to a fall and a broken hip. It is amazing how sweetly he can still hit the ball. He told me he was taught by John Watt. It is such a cool tip from a 92 year old... I guess his coach has passed on by now!” Maxwell’s Golf is the first affiliated Foot Golf course in Auckland. They held their opening day on Saturday 23 January, with twenty Foot Golfers braving the Summer heat. 11 year-old Riley Vidulich from Sydney is a very competent Soccer player set the record of 1 under par. Riley is the grandson of Graham Harrison from Government Gardens Golf in Rotorua who bought Foot Golf into New Zealand. Ben Littler had the first hole in one on the 4th hole. It is great to have another sport that follows the same fairways as golf and will help towards the expenses of running a
golf course. A completely different crowd that would not play golf are coming out to have a go. Kaye Maxwell told Golfer Pacific, “we have a large front lawn with a practice Foot Golf hole on it for people to have a try. So far the age range has been from 18 months old through to 80 years old!” “There are a few courses who have set up their own version but I have gone for the real Mccoy with Graham Harrison from Government Gardens 9 hole golf in Rotorua.” That way it gives you exposure to the rest of the world affiliation for visitors to Auckland”.

TRANSFORMATION AT WAIHI By Nan Hoggard
Most golf courses provide at least one on-course facility for the relief of players’ urgent calls of nature. Some on older country courses resemble the old-fashioned outback dunnies, discreetly hidden behind trees or trellis, and often furnished with spider webs, wetas, and in one Australian facility, a frog in the toilet bowl! No lingering there. The Waihi course has been blessed for years with a functional building that is strategically placed in the middle of the course. It was not the most stylish creation on the planet, but it more or less blended in with the scenery with a stand of old trees behind it, and some azalea shrubs along one wall
disguised its ugliness. Last year the old trees were removed, and the surrounding azaleas cleared away, leaving a stark blemish on the beautiful course. Club member and talented artist Lew Sayer recently came to the rescue by painting murals on the old building’s exterior with a golfing vista on one wall, a Waihi mining scene on another, and in appropriate places on the two portal walls—a stag, and two birds in bush settings. It is a smart transformation from the dreary old structure that is now a unique feature on the course, which perhaps from now on could be known as Lew’s Loos.
WAIKATO EAST OPEN SUCCESS
Matamata Golf Club held the annual Waikato East Open over the weekend of the 16th and 17th of January, play started at Matamata on Saturday and concluded
at Walton on Sunday. Both courses were presented in fantastic conditions and the weather played its part with hot dry conditions. Sixteen clubs were represented from throughout the North Island which was greatly appreciated. Picking up his first major senior trophy saw young Matamata golfer Jack Trower take out the gross with a two round total of 146, runner up was last years winner Jason Boobyer on 147 and Tyler Wood taking third with a two round total of 148. In the nett completion Matamata’s Ken Best had rounds of 66 and a blistering 61 at Walton to win by six shots to a fast finishing Darren Elliot with a combined total of 133 with Roger Verry taking third with a nett total of 136. A very generous sponsor’s table saw over a third of the field picking up a prize ending a hugely successful tournament. The next big tournament for the Matamata area is the Queens birthday event held over three days at Matamata, Morrinsville and Walton, contact either of the clubs to enter.

BROTHERS FINISH 1 AND 2
The North Island Men’s and Women’s Under 19 events were recently held in the Waikato. Hamilton Golf Club was the venue for the 146 male amateurs and Riverside – Lochiel hosted the 76 female amateurs over a three day 54 hole event. In the Men’s event it was young Tom Parker from Canterbury who made the most of spectacular conditions, the only player to break par on the day, Tom posted a -1 score of 71. Waikato and NZ Representative Sam Vincent, posted a round 1 score of 75, and followed it up with an even par 72 on day two of the tournament. Harry Hillier (the eventual winner) posted a 7over par 79 in round 1 but bounced back with a -4 68 in round 2. Harry’s older brother Charlie posted rounds of 76 and 71 in his first two rounds. This would leave Harry, Charlie and Sam in a tie for second place, from Tom Parker (Russley), with a round to go. In the final round, Harry Hillier shot -5 67, making a spectacular up and down

WELLINGTON GOLFER PACIFIC NEW YEAR OPEN TOURNAMENT
After a wonderful week of sunshine the New Year tournament was marred by heavy rain in the morning which meant that an excellent field of 130+ was reduced to 90. Start time was delayed by 30 minutes and the rain ceased after a couple of holes with the rest of the round played in excellent conditions. Many of the top prizes went to visitors, including our customary Korean guests. Thanks to the Golfer Pacific magazine which sponsored the event. weather, conceivably the best 4 days the Te Marua Masters tournament has seen in the last 10 years, there was a lot of very good golf played. The 72-hole stroke-play Tournament is played in 5 Handicap divisions. For the Women, 2 divisions – Silver (0 – 18.4) and Bronze (18.5 – 40.4). For the Men, 3 divisions – Senior (0 – 9.8), Intermediate (9.9 – 15.5) and Junior (15.6 to maximum of 28.7). The primary competition, in each division, is a gross-score contest where every shot counts and it is the final actual score which really matters. There can be only one winner in each division and along with the typical set of golf prizes, those winners each receive a Te Marua Masters Jacket – a recognition of the event being the local version of the well know ‘Green Jacket’’ event held in the U.S.A., The Masters. (The Te Marua Masters Jacket is Blue.) The full event also incorporates Nett and Stableford competitions, long-drive,
nearest-the-pin, and hole-in-two contests.. Consequently all players, high and low handicappers alike, have the opportunity to pick up a prize during the 4 days of golfing competition. The 154 competitors, playing in their relevant Handicap divisions, battled for the ultimate prize – the title of Te Marua Masters Champion for 2015, and the coveted “Blue Jacket”. The Te Marua Masters tournament is also the season opener for the Wellington Golf Inc’s Order of Merit programme which is used to determine the top players in the region. This year’s tournament attracted a good number of single figure handicappers, including a few on a ‘plus’ handicaps. Players at that level possess some serious ability and skill in the sport of golf, skill which includes everything from hitting the ball 250m+ straight down the middle to playing miraculous recovery shots when things don’t go quite right to lofting a gentle chip to up to the hole to sinking 10m+ putts – some very impres-
sive work. But do not forget the rest of the field – everyone in the event will have displayed some hidden talent, be it only once or maybe many times. Playing even the occasional great shot, sinking the occasional long or difficult-to-read putt provides great memories for every golfer to treasure - and talk about with friends, golfers and non-golfers alike ! The Masters Champions for 2015, their home club and their 72-hole scores are:
Women Silver Lisa Edgar 329 Surfers Paradise (Australia) Bronze Audrey Messenger 370 Te Marua Men Senior Peter Spearman-Burn 282 Miramar Intermediate Kayne Martin 317 Te Marua Junior Alex Walters 351 Featherston
Special congratulations to Lisa Edgar who, in the process of claiming her 2015 Te Marua Masters title, set a new Women’s Course record of 70 on Day 1 of the competition. The Junior division was decided by a playoff after Alex Walters, one of the

tournaments long standing participants and supports, and Zane Wilkins, a youngster playing in his first Te Marua Masters, both returned 72-hole scores of 351. Alex took the 2015 title in the first playoff hole but in that aspect, and indeed over the 4 days of the event, Zane showed the talent which is hovering, ready to take on the world – take a note of that name, Zane Wilkins, a golfing talent to be watched for sure. The Te Marua Golf Club extends its thanks the Tournament’s sponsors, its supporters and all the competitors, who together helped make the 2015 Te Marua Masters a resounding success. The 38th Te Marua “Masters” will be held from Dec 27th to Dec 30th, 2016 – Put this great event in your golfing calendar now.
TASMAN 100 HOLES PLUS
In December 2014, with nothing better to do than play golf, 4 14year olds decided to see if they could play 100 holes in a day. This they did comfortably with only a bit of chaffing to one of them. They were all on the course again next day playing a round and practicing. They were also thinking about doing it again. The thinking was to do so again but this time with a purpose – do it for a charity. As 2015 progressed so did the thinking become a reality. The 4, now 15 years old, had become 6, all from Nelson College. The date was set and the charity selected, The Fifeshire Foundation. As sponsorship was sought so did some challenges. The first goal was 100 holes. The second had a bonus of $100 if they bettered the sponsors 132 holes he had done many years ago. The third was a bonus of $500 if they were able to pass the 150 that the Club Pro, Glyn Delaney, had managed. 5am on Monday 21 December 2015 the 3 pairs were decided on, the trundlers and clubs were at the ready, food and drink were in the bags and the chilly bins lined up by the Pro shop with more food and drink. So they set off. By 10am they had played 50 holes. As they finished each lot of 18 holes it was into the chilly bins, check on the sun block and maybe change socks. Other users on the course were aware of the challenge and let the lads go. They were highly visible with special monogramed high viz shirts. The rules were such that they were not permitted any outside assistance. 12 noon and 70 holes were completed and by now they were battling strong winds and high temperatures. 100 holes came up just after 3pm and the first of the 6 had to pull out with bad chaffing. Another pulled out at 118 and a third at 126. The remaining 3 joined up and did their planning as to how to get to the targets as they ran to the next shot. 133 holes came up, one bonus in the bag, and still they played on. Around 8.30pm they walked from the

6th hole elated as they had done the 150, then it was on to the 7th and 151. This bought on a bit of brief celebrating – maybe 160 is possible. There was still daylight so it was onwards however the light was fading so they only managed another 5 holes, finishing on the 18th at 9.10pm supported by a small band of family and friends.
Pictured are Kameron Clarke, Matt Grimes and Ollie Merritt. Rough statistics are 8 2/3 rounds, approx. 70 km walking and approx 675 hits. The team: Matthew Grimes on scratch David Zohrab on 1 Tom Zohrab on 1 Kameron Clark on 3 Ollie Merrit on 6 Josh Simpson on 4 This was a remarkable achievement regardless of how many holes they had played. The standard of golf was as good at the end as it was at the start. The
Fifeshire Foundation had over $3000 to distribute to families in need and the lads felt good about doing something that was a challenge to themselves and giving to those less fortunate than themselves. The challenge is out there for others to do the same for their community.
NBS MOTUEKA OPEN
The 9th and 10th of January saw the Motueka Golf Club holding its major event of the year, The NBS Motueka Open. In beautiful conditions a field in excess of 160 golfers competed over the two days. The major prizes were $600 travel vouchers supplemented by a huge array of supporting prizes. The Club is extremely grateful to the support we receive from the Motueka business community for this event It brings a lot of visitors into our town and also gives us the opportunity to showcase our lovely course. The Overall Gross winner was Paul Bailey on 146. Overall Mens Nett winner was Keith Dowie on 133 and overall Ladies Nett winner was Jemima Daniels on 135. Pictured are Peter Johnson, Keith Dow-

CANTERBURY JOY FOR JULIANA AT FALDO SERIES NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP Photo: Kevin Clarke/CMG Sport Action Images
Watch out Lydia Ko, there’s a new kid on the block! Announcing her arrival on the international stage in spectacular fashion, fresh-faced 13-year-old Juliana Hung scored a runaway victory in the second Faldo Series New Zealand Championship, presented by the Canterbury Golf Development Trust. A member of the Canterbury team which won the 2015 Toro Inter-Provincial title, New Zealand premier women’s team golf tournament, Hung is already being touted as a rising star. And her reputation was further enhanced as she recorded an emphatic success in the 19th and penultimate leg of the record-breaking 2015-16 Faldo Series Asia season at Clearwater Golf Club. One shot clear at the top of the leaderboard after rounds of 71 and 73, Hung belied her tender years as she comfortably repelled the challenges of her senior rivals with a mature closing 71 as weather conditions improved after the players had

battled cool, damp conditions on the first two days. With a 54-hole total of one-under-par 215, Hung finished five shots ahead of her closest rivals and earned herself a trip to Mission Hills China from March 2-4 to compete in the 10th Anniversary Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, to be hosted by Sir Nick Faldo. Six-time Major champion Sir Nick, Britain’s most successful golfer, said: “Congratulations to Juliana. To string together three excellent rounds at such a young age is a wonderful effort. “Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen Lydia Ko put women’s golf in New Zealand on the map with her dramatic rise from prodigious amateur to multiple LPGA Tour winner and now world number one. If Juliana continues to progress, then Lydia may soon be looking over shoulder! “I very much look forward to welcoming Juliana to Mission Hills and to watching her pit her skills against many of the region’s most accomplished junior golfers.” Making up a four-strong New Zealand contingent for the Grand Final will be Matt McLean [Boys’ Under-21 winner]; Jake Meenhorst [Boys’ Under-19 winner] and Tom Parker [Boys’ Under-16 winner]. In a dramatic Under-21 finale, McLean holed a 45-foot birdie putt at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off to edge out defending Faldo Series New Zealand Championship winner Oscar Cadenhead. Maryanne Marlow, Chair of the Canterbury Golf Development Trust, presented the age-group winners with their prizes. “Our extreme gratitude is extended to the Canterbury Golf Development Trust for their support this year and their continued support in 2017,” said Andrew Bell, General Manager at Clearwater Golf Club, which will host next month’s ISPS Handa CANTERBURY NOTICEBOARD 3-Feb

Social and serious golfers are being invited to “take part in the action” for this year’s 2016 BMW ISPS Handa New Zealand Open in Queenstown from March 10 to 13. An iconic and hugely popular sporting event that’s back on the Queenstown calendar, the Open will be played in a ProAm format incorporating 144 professional and 144 amateur players over the first two days, before a Friday night ‘cut’ reduces the field. Over 120 caddies will be required for the tournament, a tier one event on the PGA Tour of Australasia, with caddies required from Monday March 7 for registration and practice rounds at The Hills and Millbrook Resort golf courses. Caddy Master Andrew Whiley said while there was a number of returning caddies, there were still plenty of places available for keen golf enthusiasts. “Caddies are a fundamental part of the event at both The Hills and Millbrook,” he said. “It does really help if they have some golf knowledge, but most importantly they need to be fit, keep up with the players and able to carry a tour bag around either course. “Caddying at the NZ Open is the perfect way to get inside the ropes and into the thick of the action, getting up close and personal with some of the world’s best golfers and, of course, the odd celebrity player.” Mr Whiley said most caddies traditionally received $75 per day on average plus a tip, but it was really about “taking part and being involved in the play”. Wellington caddy Jaimes Wood – nicknamed Woody – will be caddying once again for defending champion Jordan Zunic, and described the experience as “mind blowing”. “The whole event was an unforgettable experience and it was great to be part of the winning team,” said Woody. “I’m looking forward to returning in March to carry Zunic’s bag to hopefully help him defend the title.” Andrew Whiley said Woody’s story was typical of many. “It was awesome to see one of our caddies – who was caddying for the first time – on the winner’s bag. “We can’t guarantee a story like this but caddies all walk away with a very unique and interesting golfing experiences.” There is a $39 cost to register and all caddies receive an BMW ISPS Handa New Zealand Open golf shirt and hat to wear while caddying and to take home as a souvenir. Prospective volunteers can register their interest for the event by filling in the Caddie Registration Form on the website (www. nzopen.co.nz/caddies) or contact Andrew Whiley at caddymaster@outlook.com.
