Why do we play golf? That’s a question I pondered recently. The reason I did so was because I had just said to myself: ``This is why I play golf.’’ The occasion was a fine, warm day and I was playing golf. It was just nice to be outside on a warm Wellington day, underneath a blue sky and feeling the warmth of the sun on my back. And to top it off I was playing golf. This is why I play golf, I said to myself. But then I questioned myself further. So why do you play golf in the winter, Paul? So why do you play golf in the rain, Paul? So why do you head off to golf when the time before was one of the worst rounds you’ve recently had, Paul? Why, why, why? The questions were flooding through my mind. Many people would say I only have a small mind and it would only take a trickle to flood it but that’s another story. But another question I pon-
Why do we play golf and all the other questions dered was why I started playing golf after an absence of 30 years. When I started work I finished golf. As a horse racing reporter I worked every Saturday and in the latter half of my racing journalism career I worked every Saturday and Sunday. There was no time for golf. So why did I start playing again? The answer was fitness. I spent most of my time at work sitting at a computer screen and speaking on the phone. Consequently my body shape had become podgy. I was not interested in pounding the streets as a runner to slim the waistline. I know golf is not an aggressively active sport and it is hardly the answer to supreme fitness. But golf is aggressively pleasant, especially on a warm day and amongst good company. And that’s why I started playing golf again. It was good exercise in pleasant surroundings in pleasant company.
But while I know why I started playing again, I also knew why I had an advantage when it came to playing again. That advantage was that I had played the game before. I played as a child and therefore did not have to learn the game from scratch when I made my return. I have met many people who wished they had played the game much earlier in their life. The main reason I played as a child was there was a golf course two minutes walk from my home. Oddly enough that golf course is where I play today. It’s the golf course where I am on the club’s marketing committee, it’s the golf course where I contribute news items to the club’s website, it’s the golf course where I run a horse racing betting syndicate for some highly-privileged (but financially broke) members, it’s the golf course where I travel with members on golf trips. I was not consumed with golf as
a child. I also played rugby, soccer, tennis and occasionally when time permitted I did some homework. But in the long days of summer it was great to play golf until darkness. I am straying a little from the subject here but on a Sunday evening we would get fish and chips from the clubhouse. In those days, we weren’t allowed in the clubhouse at that hour so the fish and chips had to be handed out from a side door. I don’t know what the adults were discussing in the clubhouse but they must have been very important meetings because some stayed to the early hours of the next morning. But at least I had a grounding in golf as a child and when it came to make my return to golf I had some idea of how to swing a golf stick. And that perhaps underlines the importance of junior golf at our golf clubs.

Captain Cane: Interprovincials the reason I came back to playing golf
J
GOLF NEWS
onathan Cane has been part of four winning teams at the New Zealand Interprovincials Championship. That in itself is an amazing feat, especially when it is spread over 15 years. So when Cane says the Interprovincials are one of the pinnacles of amateur golf in New Zealand, he is simply not making polite comment. Cane was the captain of the Wellington team that won the Interprovincials at Ngamotu in New Plymouth last month. Ironically it was at the same course in 2001 where Cane won his first Interprovincial and there was no hiding of his emotions at the latest win. “It’s an amazing feeling,’’ Cane said. “Fifteen years to the dot since I first started playing (the tournament) and 2010 since Wellington last won it. I can’t really describe it.” The Interprovincials provide the rare opportunity for golfers to be part of a team instead of playing as an individual. Cane said that simply magnifies the delight of victory. “Everyone here has put in the utmost effort and deserve every bit, from the
Wellington captain Jonathan Cane
management to the reserves and family,’’ he said. “We had to play some of the best golf of our life to do it against some great sides so it feels pretty special.” Cane had more than a decade away from the game before his return a few years ago. The camaraderie of the Interprovincials was one of the reasons he came back to game, he said. “To be honest this is the reason I came back playing. I had 12 or 13 years off and the thing I missed the most was the Wel-
lington teams. “I have played for New Zealand and it’s amazing, but you don’t forget these moments. This is my fourth win and it means no less than the other three, so it’s pretty special.’’ Wellington played Otago in the final but it turned out a one-sided affair. Wellington crushed Otago 5-0. Elton Nicholson, playing at No 3 for Wellington, was the first to log a win in the final after he defeated Inia Logan 5 and 4. Wellington’s second win came when No 5 Kerry Mountcastle, who had been in top form throughout the week, defeated Chris Snow 3 and 2. With Cane and Wellington No 4 Ben Slaven also holding handy advantages, it was just going to be just a matter of time before the win was declared as the players approached the last holes. That proved to be the case with No 1 Daniel Hillier not required to end his match against Fraser MacLachlan. Hillier was two up as they played the 15th hole when it was confirmed Cane and Slaven had won their matches.
Earlier in the day, Otago had caused a minor upset when they ousted two-time defending Interprovincial champions Waikato in the semi-finals. Wellington had beaten North Harbour in the other semi-final. Waikato had been unbeaten through the week and were the favourites to take out a third successive title. But three halved matches at the top of the order and two Otago wins at No 4 and No 5 saw Otago prevail 3-1/2 to 1-1/2.
Results:Semi-finals: Wellington beat North Harbour 3-2: Daniel Hillier beat Jason Gulasekharam 4 and 3, Jonathan Cane halved with Cameron Jones, Elton Nicholson beat Chang-Gi Lee 4 and 3, Ben Slaven lost to Mark Hutson 5 and 4, Kerry Mountcastle halved with Jake Meenhorst. Otago beat Waikato 3-1/2 to 1-1/2: Fraser MacLachlan halved with Luke Toomey, Brendon Hodgson halved with Nick Coxon, Inia Logan halved with Matt Morris, Michael Smith beat Charlie Smail 1up, Chris Snow beat Chris Charlton 3 and 1. Final: Wellington 5 Otago 0: Hillier beat MacLachlan, Cane beat Hodgson 4 and 3, Nicholson beat Logan 5 and 4, Slaven beat Smith 2 and 1, Mountcastle beat Snow 3 and 2.
Ryan Fox has it all before him on the European Tour R yan Fox is looking forward to this year. The Auckland professional golfer has graduated from the Challenge Tour to the European Tour and is exicted at the prospects that come with it. “Obviously there is much more opportunity to make some money,’’ Fox told Newstalk ZB radio last month. “Obviously the events are much bigger.’' The European Tour carries greater prizemoney which continues to increase. “Europe has announced seven seven-million dollar plus tournaments for next year which I’m hoping to get into all of them,’’ Fox said. “You compare that to the Challenge Tour, we didn’t play for seven million dollars the whole
year. I think we probably played for something probably closer to about two (million).’' Fox was able to play some European Tour events last year but often with little prior notice. The difference this year is he will be able to select which events he plays. “I know what events I’m going to get in to. I can pick and choose, unlike this year (2016) where I played whatever I could get in to. I got in to events late and that made travel difficult.'' Fox said the Challenge Tour had four or five events worth in the vicinity of 400-450,000 euros. He said it was essential to play well in those events to ensure moving up to the European Tour. “If you didn’t play well in a couple of those it was very, very hard to get a (European) Tour card,
so there was a lot of pressure in those events.’' The travel involved, to places like Kazakhstan in eastern Europe, also added to the pressure to play well. “Some weeks you feel like you have to finish top 10 to cover your costs for the week. “If you go somewhere like Kazakhstan, it costs you four or five grand for the week just to get there. That can be a difficult thing, especially if you are struggling a little bit (with your form). “You feel like you are just burning money. I guess that’s the hard thing with professional golf. “There is a lot of expense to start with. You almost feel like you are effectively gambling, gambling on your own ability.’’ Fox is well aware the competition on the European Tour will
be much tougher and there are many young players emerging through the ranks. That was underlined when he played in the Australian Open in Sydney in November. Fox was paired with Jordan Spieth in the final round and he said it was hard to think he was already a two-time major winner at the age of 23. “You think he’s an old head in the game because he’s been around for four or five years. There’s just that much competition now.’' Fox finished equal fourth in the Australian Open and earned $A46,000 for his efforts. Spieth went on to win the tournament despite not playing to his best. Fox admitted to nerves at playing with Spieth. “Early I was definitely nervous. I
was playing with a multiple major winner who had won the Aussie Open before. “I had never played in front of a crowd anything like what he generated that day. “There were a few thoughts that went through my head on the first tee when I saw the crowd and I said please don’t kill anyone. “But after a couple of holes I started to enjoy it. Jordan was great to play with — easy to talk to and it kind of made it easy for me to relax. “I felt like I gave it a pretty good run and could have quite easily done him down the stretch if I had holed a couple of putts. “But on top of that you could see why he’s won so many times, why he’s won majors. He just knows how to get it done.”
Ko: Will normal transmission resume? I t will be interesting to see what path the career of Lydia Ko heads down this year. At the end of last year Ko announced she was splitting with her United States-based coach David Leadbetter after three years together. During that time Ko racked up 12 wins on the LPGA Tour, including two majors. But Ko’s form tapered off towards the end of last year. After taking the silver medal at the Olympics in Brazil in August, the path she went down was the worst she had encountered since turning professional in 2012. She did not post a top-10 in her next five tournaments before the season-finale CME Group Tour Championship, at which she finished out of the top 40 three times. In addition, her last two majors, the British Open and Evian Championship, she was 40th and 43rd. This was not the Ko we knew. It seems a change to her swing, to gain more length off the tee, may have contributed to her declining form.
Leadbetter claimed Ko’s father Gil Hong Ko and mother Bob Sook Hyon were having too big an influence on Lydia’s golf. It’s hard to know whether this was sour grapes from Leadbetter but he told Gold Digest magazine: “They tell her when to go to bed, what to eat, what to wear, when to practice and what to practice. And they expect her to win every tournament. ``They are good people, who love their daughter and want the very best for her. But they are naive about golf. And at some point, they’ve got to let the bird fly from the nest. I would often think, it’s not easy coaching three people.” There have been other decisions which have raised questions. In her first year as professional, 2014, Ko changed caddies seven times. She finally settled on Jason Hamilton, with whom she won 10 tournaments in two years. But in October, with three weeks to go in the season, she fired Hamilton. At the same time Leadbetter was dropped, Ko said she would be changing equipment companies from Callaway to PXG.

Major winner for NZ Open in Queenstown GOLF NEWS
Y E Yang, the first Asian-born male to win a golf major, will play in the New Zealand Open in Queenstown in March. Yang, known as the Tiger Killer after his victory over Tiger Woods at the 2009 US PGA Championship, has enjoyed 11 victories as a professional over the last two decades. His involvement in the 98th ISPS Handa New Zealand Open brings his career full circle, after the Korean ventured to this country for several years to hone his skills before turning professional in 1996. New Zealand Open tournament director Michael Glading was delighted to secure a player the calibre of Yang. “To have a recent major winner come and play in our event will undoubtedly add another dimension to the tournament,’’ Glading said. “Not only is he a remarkable player, he is also renowned as an outstanding person who has told us that he is very keen to play in New Zealand, a country which played such a significant part in his de-

velopment as a golfer.” Yang is self-taught, moving to New Zealand as a 21-year-old after working in the construction industry and after completing his military service. Yang turned professional at age 24 in 1996, with his breakthrough coming a decade later with his fourth win on the Japan Golf Tour followed by victory in the Korea Open and the HSBC Champions event, co-sanctioned with the European Tour. He held off Tiger Woods to win by
two shots and opened his way on to the European Tour. From there he made his way on to the PGA Tour in 2008 but was forced to return to qualifying school the following year. That paved the way for a remarkable 2009 with a breakthrough win at the Honda Classic and then later that same year he secured a brilliant three-shot win in the 91st US PGA Championship. It was the first time that Woods had not won a major when leading after 54 holes. “My life in golf definitely changed after the PGA win,” Yang said last month. “Last year I had a neck injury that kept me out of the game for three to four months, but now my body is good, the mind is good and I am happy with my game.” Yang is looking forward to his return to New Zealand, before he heads back to the European Tour for 2017. “It was a long time ago now but I spent a lot of time in New Zealand practicing in Auckland, Christchurch, Taupo and oth-
er places. That was for almost four years and that was maybe 20 years ago. “I’ve never been to Queenstown but I’ve been told by many people that it is very beautiful.” Also confirmed are two of New Zealand’s leading professionals, Ryan Fox and Michael Hendry, both coming off their best 12 months in the game. Fox, 29, has gained his full playing card for the European Tour after finishing fourth on the Challenge Tour which included victory in the Northern Ireland Open on his way to European earnings of $NZ284,000. Hendry has enjoyed a brilliant season on the Japan Golf Tour. Both Fox and Hendry are keen to break the drought of Kiwis winning the New Zealand Open. The last was Mahal Pearce, back in 2003 at Middlemore. Said Fox: “It’s been a long time and it would be great to have my name on the trophy. This is a great tournament that I always look forward to playing in.”
Auckland racks up fifth win in last six years
T
he dominance of Auckland at the women’s New Zealand Interprovincials’ Championship continued last month. Auckland beat Bay of Plenty 3-2 in the final of the Toro-sponsored event to notch a remarkable fifth win in the last six years. But the latest win, at the Westown Golf Club in New Plymouth, went down to the wire in weather conditions that were horrendous. Auckland No 2 Munchin Keh secured an early point with a commanding 6 and 5 win while Auckland No 4 Brittany Dryland gained a second point with a 2 and 1 win. The final was still in the balance as Auckland No 5 Carmin Lin, a 12-year-old, came to the last hole of her game. Lim had an eight foot putt for victory and, unaware the title was on the line, she rammed it home. “I had no idea that putt was for the win,’’ Lim said. “It was meant to be an easy two-putt but I’m just happy I made it. This week has

been a great experience and I can’t wait to return next year.” Siyi Keh, a younger sister of Munchin, and Auckland No 1 Rose Zheng lost their matches to provide Bay of Plenty with thoughts of what might have been. Munchin Keh was later named player of the tournament with an unbeaten record from eight games. Her emotions were hard to hide as the experienced Auckland and national representative anchored her side all week. “Oh I’m so stoked at the moment,’’ Keh said with a beaming smile. “From last year (when failing to make the

semi-finals) to this year is so different. We are so happy with this big win.” Keh was proud of her 100 percent winning record but said the performance of the team was the priority. “It’s always a bonus but I wasn’t too focused on the individual aspect. I just wanted to do my part for the team. “The girls have done really well and worked really hard for this. This one is one to remember after last year, we wanted it so bad and to complete the week as champions, it’s a great feeling.” Keh was not the only player to win every game. Her teammate Dryland also achieved the feat as did Bay of Plenty’s Emmalee Morrell. The wet weather saw the final delayed by an hour shortly after it began. Other matches outside the final were abandoned. The effort from the consistently strong and previously undefeated Bay of Plenty side remained a good one. It had fought out a 3-2 win over Canterbury in the semi-finals and were tough opponents for
Auckland in the final. Bay of Plenty No 1 Alanna Campbell led her team’s charge in what could be her final Interprovincials after receiving a golfing scholarship to the United States. A reflection of 2016 from New Zealand Golf’s perspective By Dean Murphy New Zealand Golf Chief Executive
This time of year provides a great opportunity to look back and reflect on the progress made over the past 12 months. While there have been too many highlights to individually mention, these are the key memories I’ll take from 2016: Performance on the world stage: Lydia Ko clearly provides the major highlight here with a silver medal at the Olympics and a major championship and three other LPGA tour victories — an incredible year that in isolation would probably be considered the most successful year ever for a New Zealand golfer. To add to Lydia’s astonishing an ongoing success, the performances across the board in both the professional and amateur spaces have been very good this year. In the amateur game, our players played particularly well at the Eisenhower and Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship and it is so gratifying to see the success of New Zealand Golf programme graduates Danny Lee and Ryan Fox on the world stage. 2017 is looking bright.
NZ Women’s and Men’s Open: In time I suspect we will look back at the success of bringing an LPGA event to the country as a significant moment in the history of our game. It has taken an incredible amount of hard work and persistence but this should be looked on as one of our greatest achievements this year. The men’s Open Championship also continues to go from strength to strength and it was very pleasing this year to form a new partnership with Millbrook that sees the championship remain in Arrowtown for at least another five years. NZ Golf Industry Council: This fantastic initiative is now up and running and is being very well supported by all the organisations who work in the golf sector. It is very early days and there is a long way to go but I’m pleased we have managed to develop this important initiative to this stage. We should see further progress in 2017. LOVE Golf: This promotional brand goes from strength to strength and I don’t think we could have imagined how successful it would become in such a
short period of time. The She Loves Golf sub-brand and the positive results this is achieving for not only the perception of our game but also the direct membership and participation numbers is also a wonderful success story. Golf tourism: Our partnership with Tourism New Zealand to grow the level of golf tourism in New Zealand is delivering outstanding results. The value of golf tourism has grown from $145 million in 2012 to $329 million in 2016. This is outstanding growth and an outcome from all the good work carried out to date. The good news is there is so much more growth possible in this area which can only benefit the whole golf sector. Club support programme: Supporting clubs and golfing communities throughout the country is clearly an area of growing importance for New Zealand Golf as we look to improve the health of the grass roots of the game. While we have an ongoing need to demonstrate impact and ensure this work ‘moves the national needle’, I think our work in this area has been raised to a new level this

year. In particular, the number of high quality resources and materials we have provided to the golf sector is outstanding. While I’ve mentioned just a few of the many highlights from 2016, I don’t think anyone in our organisation is under any illusion that many more years of hard work are needed to ensure sustainability of our game. As an organisation, New Zealand Golf has been very deliberate with our strategy for the past two years. I believe our focus on growing and supporting the game at grass roots level has seen real change and I think we are absolutely on the right track. However we are acutely aware there is plenty more to do in 2017. As a final thought for the year, I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the 8000 dedicated people working and volunteering within the golf sector across New Zealand. We are extremely privileged to work alongside such a dedicated team of people whose tireless efforts to grow the love of golf are greatly appreciated. Thank you to you all for the fantastic contribution you make.

Some thoughts about the split of Ko and Leadbetter By Andrew Whiley A voice from the south
David Leadbetter publicly stated that he felt it was the interference of Lydia Ko’s parents that led to the break up of his relationship with his prized student. For those of you who don’t know who he is, David Leadbetter is a famous golf instructor who has built a great résumé from working with some of the best players in the world. Nick Faldo and Nick Price were some of Leadbetter’s prized students that really made a name for him. Leadbetter built his reputation by working with some notable tour players over the decades and in the last 15 years, he has maintained his profile with some of the top LPGA Tour players including Michelle Wie. Originally, Leadbetter was a struggling tour player on the South African and European tours in the early 1980s. He spent many years in Harare where he met Nick Price and they became great friends. I once met Nick Price and had a good chat with him about his early years playing professional golf and his relationship
with Leadbetter, who was then a keen student of Ben Hogan and the “modern fundamentals of golf”. They spent hours on the range working on Nick’s swing. Nick Faldo was a struggling tour pro until he took a year off and rebuilt his golf swing under Leadbetter’s tutelage and they both became famous. Leadbetter has been a major success story in golf coaching, working with top players like Greg Norman and Ernie Els. But was he a major figure in the golf world five years ago? I personally don’t believe he was. Now, I am not a famous coach and the closest I have come to teaching a PGA winner was giving one recognisable name, golf lessons when he was 12 years old. However, personally, I believe Leadbetter is frustrated at losing Ko who was his major “golden ticket” over the last three years. In my opinion, Lydia recently put him back on top of the golf world and teaching. His media profile jumped dramatically during his time working with her. Can you recall reading many of his tips or instruction pieces prior to
his working with Lydia? I know they were there, but I didn’t notice them. I know I was instead reading the ones by Sean Foley and Butch Harmon. Now let’s think back to when Lydia left her New Zealand coach Guy Wilson and moved on to work with Leadbetter. At the time, I’m sure Guy was disappointed and probably quite frustrated, but you never saw that from him. He wished her the best. We certainly didn’t see this same graciousness from Leadbetter. Lydia’s struggles in the last few months were not his doing according to the media reports. Leadbetter said the results were a product of her father stepping in to coach her. However, I personally think there is more to it than that. I believe an experienced coach like Leadbetter would have had a stronger handle on Lydia’s schedule. In today’s world, with the communication methods we have to coach globally, he should have been able to maintain the coaching connection. Did Lydia play too much in the first six-eight months of the year? Was David too busy trying to ensure Lydia became
TwilighT golf
a poster child for his “A-swing”, that he forgot what was best for her? Was he too involved with IMG, the company which manages Lydia, and who also happens to be the long term managers for the Leadbetter Academies? I don’t have the answers but I personally believe Lydia was over-taught and over-played by the time August came around. It would actually be refreshing to see someone like Leadbetter take some ownership of Ko’s results in the second half of the year rather than blaming interference. In the same vein as he seemed to be taking full credit when Ko’s results were more positive in the first half of the year! As for Ko, we all know that she is one of golf’s greats, possessing a natural talent bolstered by a lot of hard work. We also know that her family remains 100 percent supportive of her both personally and professionally. At the end of the day, no matter what the full story is, I sincerely wish Lydia the best of luck in working with her new coach.

PGA Championship returns to Palmerston North By Duncan Simpson New Zealand PGA Secretary
It’s been nearly 60 years since the New Zealand PGA Championship was last played in Palmerston North. Back in 1957, the PGA was part of a week-long festival of golf, and was played as a matchplay event following on from the NZ Open Championship. The open that year was won by the great Kel Nagle, and he duly completed the double to record one of his seven NZ PGA Championship victories. This year, the Manawatu Golf Club will host the 2017 Lawnmaster Horizon Golf NZ PGA Championship, to be played from March 2– 5 at its Hokowhitu course in Palmerston North. The tournament forms part of the PGA Tour of Australasia, with prize money of $125,000, the same as for the 2015 and 2016 NZ PGA Championships staged at Auckland’s Remuera Golf Club. The PGA Championship is the culmination of a tournament growth strategy
at one of New Zealand’s most historic and progressive golf clubs. Having run the very successful Lawnmaster amateur strokeplay tournament for many years, it was logical that this should evolve into a Charles Tour event, the Lawnmaster Classic, which it did in 2013. The club and Manawatu community will now be taking this to another level with the staging of the 2017 PGA Championship. It seems particularly appropriate that a region which has produced three PGA Tour players — Grant Waite, Craig Perks and Tim Wilkinson — should now be the host city for one of New Zealand’s premier tournaments. The Hokowhitu course was first laid out in 1895, making it the country’s oldest. Although not long at 6055 metres, its narrow tree lined fairways and fast greens, coupled with 50 plus bunkers will provide plenty of challenge, and the famous Palmerston North breeze is bound to be a factor at some stage. With a number of shortish par fours, and four reachable par fives, it looks on paper like a birdie fest in the making. Michael Hendry proved that
in 2015 when he opened with two rounds of 64, eventually going on to win with a four round tally of 23 under par. Hendry promised to go even better last year when he blitzed the first round in 61, but came back to Earth with a second round of 72. The tournament was reduced by weather to three rounds, Hendry closing with a 66 to record back to back Lawnmaster titles. This year he will be looking to convert that into his third NZ PGA Championship victory, having raised the McDougall Cup twice at The Hills in recent years. The Sir Bob Charles Trophy, initiated in 2015 for the leading New Zealand player in the championship will again be on offer and will carry additional significance this year, as Sir Bob was the winner of the last NZ Open to be played at Hokowhitu in 1973. Josh Geary is the current and only holder to date, having won it twice at Remuera. The NZ PGA Championship takes place the week before the NZ Open in Queenstown, and Hendry and Geary are likely
to be facing a strong international field. Jordan Zunic used the 2015 PGA as his springboard to NZ Open success, and last year Brad Kennedy went on from his victory at Remuera to record his best year on the Japan Tour. On Sunday March 5, the 2017 Lawnmaster Horizon Golf NZ PGA Championship winner will join a long list of famous names on the McDougall Cup, first played for in 1920 when it was won by Joe Kirkwood. Apart from Kel Nagle, winners since then have included Andy Shaw, Peter Thomson, Sir Bob Charles, Tony Jacklin, Frank Nobilo, Glen Turner, John Lister, Simon Owen, and Steven Alker and Michael Hendry in recent years. So there’s bound to be plenty of exciting golf for local fans to enjoy at close quarters in March, as they walk the immaculately groomed fairways of the Manawatu Golf Club, enjoy the excellent on and off course facilities and take part in golfing history as the NZ PGA Championship returns to the regions.

New gear test
By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional
We are into the new year so it’s a chance to test some of the new equipment on the market. Soon we will see the new Taylormade gear but in the meantime we have some new equipment from Titleist, Wilson and Callaway. It will be only myself testing in this case but then I am keen to get different handicappers trying the products in future articles. But for this article, it’s just me. Just so that you are aware I play very little golf these days so I would put myself on a handicap around 2-3 so as I test these I am a bit rusty to say the least. So what I will test for will be how easy they are to hit, distance gains from the clubs including club and ball speed improvements, general feel, sound and look. After a warm up I tested my own irons. I have never been a big hitter of irons so I was interested to see the difference a game improvement iron can bring to distance and accuracy. I am used to the classic blade shape and feel so the chunky style clubs were hard to look down upon but the resulting shots blew me away.
I was mistiming my irons in my warm up and in testing making average results and showed my lack of play. But, with the Callaway Big Bertha OS and Steel Heads like any good game improvement iron it didn’t seem to matter where I fit it on the face, good shots prevailed. With these irons I managed to increase carry by 17% on average, clubhead speed increased by 6mph and ball speed with the Big Bertha OS irons increased by 13mph from my own which is crazy. One of the very interesting aspects is that for me, the flights were similar to my own forged type irons in terms of height where I was expecting to balloon these more. Would I ever be able to work the ball with these irons as well as a forged model, unlikely. Can I feel the ball come of the face like a forged iron, absolutely not but if I was looking for gains in distance and consistency I would be looking at not just these models I tried but others like the PING G, Wilson Staff D300 irons and
the new Taylormade irons released early next year. They may make a big difference. When testing the drivers I was surprised that I lost club head speed on the Titleist 917 and Callaway Fusion driver but gained ball speed. This tells me that the design of the club is working but perhaps the shaft did not suit my swing although all of us would love to be able to hit it further by hitting it easier. The Callaway Fusion outgunned the other two models in terms of largest ball speed gains. The largest gain in club head speed came from the Wilson Staff D300 driver but it took a few shots to get used to the lightness of this club. I didn’t see as great increases in club head speed like I did when I tested the M1 from Taylormade from all the models tested. The Titleist 917 looked the best out of the three I tested with its classic shape and new colour. I feel I didn’t get the best
out of this driver when testing but it still resulted in gains in ball speed as they promise. The Callaway Fusion driver was a surprise. I tended to hit this left as it seemed to want to sit closed so once I adjusted to this it was impressive. I think if you are looking at a game improvement driver its worth looking at this model. The D300 from Wilson Staff is light but they have really improved its look from the D200. For the price and what you get out of the club it’s the best value for money in the shop. It would suit certain swing types as very light drivers don’t suit all but its worth a close look. The ladies model matches anything on the market and if you are into your senior years I recommend you should try one. I love getting out and testing equipment when I can and these clubs did surprise me in a positive way. There are so many more models to test so this is just a small sample of options for golfers. I would love to test a larger sample but there is only limited space for this article. I hope this helps some of you make a bit of an educated decision on a new purchase. If you need help please contact me directly.

Increased international representation expected for NZ Speedgolf Open By Paul Gueorgieff, editor Golfer Pacific
GOLF EVENT
C
ontestants from the United States and Europe are expected to play in the New Zealand Speedgolf Open at Rotorua in March. This year will be the third running of the tournament but an added attraction for overseas visitors is that it forms the first leg of an Australasian double. The New Zealand event, sponsored by Toro, will be hosted by the Rotorua Golf Club at Arikikapakapa from March 4-5 and the following weekend there will be the Australian Speedgolf Open in Sydney. The Rotorua tournament has previously attracted about 50 players but
that could double to 100 this year, said Rotorua Lakes Council major events co-ordinator Jason Cameron. “The event is growing,’’ Cameron told Golfer Pacific. “It is now part of an Australasian tour. There is quite a movement developing around speed golf. It’s played in more than 10 countries around the world now.’’ Last year’s tournament was graced with the presence of world champion Rob Hogan of Ireland but he was beaten by Dunedin teacher Richard Olsen. The latter is expected to defend his title in March while other top New Zealander contenders likely to play are Landyn Edwards of Rotorua and Nick Willis, back in the country after his Rio Olympic bronze medal in the 1500m.
Edwards won the inaugural tournament in 2015 when beating speed golf trail blazer Willis. Speed golf is scored by adding together the player’s golf score and time of play. For example the winning score of Olsen last year was 117.48 which comprised a golf score of 75 coupled with a time of 42 minutes 48 seconds. Players only carry a handful of clubs, sometimes putt one-handed and are permitted to hole the ball without removing the flagstick. “You can’t over-think your shots,’’ Cameron said. “It’s line it up, hit it and run to the next shot.’’ Cameron said this year’s tournament is being expanded to include a greater number of social players.
TAKE ON GOLF’S COOLEST NEW CHALLENGE
“It’s a competitive event but it’s a social event as well. There are a number of different categories that people can play in,’’ he said. In addition to the main event there will also be a social event where players can choose to play both or one day of the weekend and a pairs event where players alternate the holes they play. Toro New Zealand’s Chris Todd said that the future of golf relies on new thinking and ways of doing things. “It’s exciting to see top athletes demonstrating their skills on golf courses,’’ Todd said. “It makes for a great fit with Toro and its commitment to high performance.”

Located just half an hour from Manukau, you can enjoy the peace of the country while still being close to Auckland at Maramarua Golf Club. You will also experience one of the best golf courses in the region. The eighth hole at Maramarua requires a long tee shot to the right of a wide fairway. The fairway has trees on both sides, which protect out of bounds on the far right and a hazard on the left. Shots to the left hand side don’t get a shot at the green as this is blocked by mature pine trees.
Having placed your 220m-plus drive on the right-hand side of the fairway you have a daunting approach shot over a rock-surrounded pond to a two-tiered green. If the pin is on the top level the landing area is small. Here you will be faced with the decision whether to aim for the top and risk an overshot of play to the lower area and guarantee a difficult two putt. Either way, it’s one heck of a hole!
Challenge yourself on the West Coast GOLF EVENT
The West Coast has a long golfing history and is proud to offer The West Coast Golf Challenge, a great experience for both local golfers and friends from ‘away’ – which is every part of the
world that is not on ‘The Coast’. March 7-March 10 2017, will be the 5th edition of the West Coast Golf Challenge. A new feature of this year’s event is
a new Pro Grade. It is a great opportunity to combine four rounds of golf on four quite different courses with the chance to experience some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. The four hosting clubs are Westport on their Kawatiri links at Carters’ Beach, Reefton on their Glenburnie course, Hokitika on their links course at Mahinapua, and Greymouth on their course at Kaiata. All of the courses will offer different challenges, from the links courses of Hokitika and Westport to the parklands layouts of Reefton and Greymouth, and all will be well prepared and presented. Good hospitality is guaranteed. This is the West Coast after all! Visitors are encouraged to take time either before, during or after the tournament to visit picturesque landmarks such as Denniston, Cape Foulwind, Charleston, Punakaiki, Oceana Gold mine, Lake Brunner, Brunner Mine, Shantytown, Lake Kaniere, Hokitika Gorge or The Glaciers and all of the beauty that lies between and beyond. The chance should also be taken to be impressed by and get your own examples of the wonderful art and crafts that the West Coast prides itself on.
A good variety of accommodation and restaurants are available in all of the towns and visitors can choose to relocate for the next day’s play, which the schedule readily allows for, or make any of the towns their base for the duration of the tournament. The courses will be played in the following order, Westport, Reefton, Hokitika and finally Greymouth. Tournament organisers are confident that visitors and locals alike will be impressed with the $14000-plus value prize list. The tournament will be a stableford in three divisions, one for women and two for the men. With fields over 100 in the last two years we expect the limit of 120 players to be reached fairly quickly so enter early to avoid disappointment. To express interest and receive an information pack, or visit the tournament website at http:// westcoastgolfchallenge.com for more informationand an entry form. he Greymouth Golf Club is located on Golf Links Road approximately 6km east of Greymouth town centre. The course is acknowledged as having the best manicured fairways of the 18 hole courses on the West Coast, and while not long at about 5600 metres it provides an interesting test of golf. Most of the Club’s major tournaments are played in the period from January to March, starting with the New Year’s Day tournament, followed by the Westland Classic in mid February, and as one leg of the West Coast four course challenge in early March. Hole No 8 is the club’s signature hole. While not long, the 329 metre par 4 dog-leg left has an out-of -bounds on the left. There are also two strategically positioned mature kahikatea to manoeuvre past in the fairway. Sir Bob Charles has described this hole as one of his top 18 holes of golf in New Zealand. HARBOUR GOLFERS HEAD TO USA
Some of North Harbour’s very top representative players are headed to the USA shortly to undertake college scholarships. It seems as a district we see so many of our players head down this av-
enue and while it is sad to see them go it is also great to see so many of them get their opportunity to further their golf and education through the amazing opportunities college golf presents. Ela Grimwood (Gulf Harbour) has received a scholarship to Mississippi State, Jake Meenhorst (Huapai) is heading to Tennessee and Bridget Connolly (Waitemata) is heading to Western Illinois. All these players have had fantastic records representing North Harbour over the years and we wish them all the best for their US college careers! Congratulations on your scholarships guys!
THE END OF AN ERA
It is with sadness that North Harbour Golf reports that our long time golf coordinator Pam Sowden had her last day working for the association on the 15th of December. After almost 12 years working so hard for junior golf in the district Pam is now pursuing new opportunities in the new year. On behalf of so many
people throughout the years we wish her the very best and will no doubt see her a bit more on the golf course in the future. Pam recently was granted her amateur status back and the wheels are most certainly in motion for her to in the near future put the North Harbour colours on again, this time in a playing role! All the best Pam, we will miss you, but are also so happy you are moving onto exciting new challenges!

and Judy James respectively, have stepped down from their roles with new conveners being integrated into the roles throughout 2016. And of course a presentation made to our long term junior golf coordinator Pam Sowden who is finishing her role with the association. While their achievements were celebrated and our appreciation shown it is still with a twinge of sadness that we say bye to these fantastic group of people who have given tirelessly to our game in the district. They will be missed. Finally, and the highlight of the night, was the nomination of Sandie Jennins to be recognised as a life member of the association (subsequently passed). Sandie’s long time service to the district is immense and she joins Mike and Ann Cambie, Malcolm Cooper, George Newlove and Margaret Robinson as a life member of the North Harbour Golf Association. Just a week prior Sandie also received a life membership at her beloved home club of Pupuke. Two life memberships within a week has to be a pretty rare achievement! Well done Sandie and a real testament to your support/ tireless work of the sport in the district!

PROSTATE CANCER FOUNDATION FUNDRAISER
Pupuke Golf Club hosted their Prostate Cancer Foundation Fundraiser on November 19. The event was a huge success for the club, drawing a field of 170 players and large sponsorship support. After the game players were treated to dinner and an auction which included clothing items donated by Pupuke Life Member Lydia Ko. The idea for this event came about from the Club Manager Rex Gould’s own experience with Prostate Cancer earlier this year and a discussion with fellow club member Kevin Brailey who also has undergone surgery for Prostate Cancer. The pair wanted to bring about an awareness of the disease to their fellow men at Pupuke and do something to help others. A small committee was formed. This was led by Pupuke GM Graye Allnutt with Kevin, Rex, Geddes Weston, Raewyn Stanaway, James Firth and Murray Durdle all part of an enthusiastic team who either personally or have had close family connections in dealing with Prostate Cancer. The Speaker on the night was leading Auckland Urologist Andrew Lienert. Andrew gave an informative and light hearted talk on dealing with Prostate Cancer. $38,000 was raised, a great effort by the team and supporters on the day.

This year’s tournament held recently at the Titoki course drew a field of 123 players from 35 clubs playing 54 holes over 3 days. A golfing weekend away at a very popular beach location makes this event an extremely popular annual getaway, with the full field sign going up within 24 hours from opening time in September. The weather over the weekend was great for golf, with little wind. The field was divided into 2 sections based on age which this year saw the age split at 58. Steve Goddard (Whangamata), on an 11 handicap, came out of the gates with all clubs firing to lead the field at the end of day one with a one under par round of 69, and lead by 3 shots from Glen Goldfinch (Pukekohe) with another 3 players one shot further back. Dave Cook (Tauranga) made Sunday his day to shot a par 70 in an attempt to chase down Mike Leeper but he ran out of holes. Shooting a three round total of 216, Mike Leeper finished three shots clear of Dave Cook, with Glen Goldfinch
four shots further back on 223. Overall Nett winner was Philip Trevenen (Waihi) on 202, and Alan Thomas (Taihape) took out best Stableford with 116 points. Highlight of the tournament was a hole in one on the 120m No. 11 hole by local member Kevin Flower. A well-attended prize giving ceremony followed on Sunday afternoon. Sponsors and local businesses combined with the Whangamata Golf Club to build a prize list worth in excess of $14,000.

BAY OF PLENTY 2016 BOP MEN’S TORO INTERPROVINCIAL
The BOP Men’s Interprovincial team finished the 2016 event in 5th place after 4 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat in a very tough group. Played last month , After wins over Poverty Bay, Man Wang, Hawkes Bay and Aorangi the defeat from North Harbour and draw with Waikato were the one’s that were ultimately their undoing. The Thursday morning defeat to North Harbour was an excruciatingly close call that was decided in the end with a missed 5 footer for Eagle on the last that would have given BOP a 2.5-2.5 draw and taken the team to the semi’s. Knowing the team had to beat the undefeated Waikato in the last match on Friday to make it, there was a missed 15 footer on the last green to win with the scores tied at 2-2 that would have sent the team through to the semi finals.

Having played golf alongside Sir Bob Charles, Andrew Henare was aware how passionate the 1963 British Open champion was about encouraging juniors. “We wrote a letter and sent it to him [Charles],” says the Napier Golf Club professional who made contact almost a year ago. Charles accepted the invite and will be here on January 23. “He’s the most decorated golfer, to be fair, and to have him to be part of the programme as part of the growth of juniors, not just in our club but throughout New Zealand, is fantastic,” he says, before the launch of the one-day Napier club pro-am next month. “I thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be wonderful for a guy who supports junior golf in New Zealand to come up here to be an ambassador for that’, which he is now.” The Napier club, through Andrew Henare Golf, is finding him accommodation and meeting the costs of his travel. Charles, who will also compete in the pro-am, will oversee a clinic Henare will conduct for the juniors on the morning of the competition. “He will participate in the clinic and push his experience,” Henare says of the 80-year-old from Christchurch.

HBPB WOMEN DO BETTER THAN BOYS
They didn’t make the final four but Hawke’s Bay Poverty Bay did remarkably well to finish third behind powerhouses Auckland and Canterbury in the “division of death” last month. “In our division we had three big names to play against and so we lost to Auckland and Canterbury but we beat Waikato, which was another big thing,” said a delighted HBPB No3 seed Sara Deam after they predictably crushed both Otago and Aorangi on the final day of pool play at the Toro New Zealand Women’s Interprovincials in New Plymouth. The 25-year-old Eastern Institute of Technology sport and recreational degree/diploma in business studies student lost one down to Jessica Shearer yesterday afternoon against Aorangi. Rookie top HBPB seed Angela Jones eventually got on the winner’s card with a don’t-argue 5 and 3 against Otago’s Abigael Crawford and a 3 and 1 over Aorangi’s Ginny Bolderston. No 2 seed Tessa McDonald met her match in Jo Hicks-Beach, going down 2 and 1, but the resilient amateur from Gisborne bounced back with a 2 and 1 over
Sharon Bradford in the arvo. Veteran No 4 Janie Field whipped Otago’s Rachel Lissaman 6 and 4 and the reloaded to blow away Aorangi’s Kathryn Baker 6 and 5. Seasoned campaigner Jaimie McIvor accounted for Otago’s Susan Greig by 2 and 1 before Aorangi’s Jenny Kellahan made her sweat for a 1up result in the afternoon. HBPB play for 5th-6th placing against perennial semi-finalists North Harbour this morning after the latter missed the cull by half a point. “It’s great. I’ve only played Toro for three years and this has been the best finish we’ve had since I’ve been in the team,” she said. Deam said they were always targeting the future and this year’s blend were coming off winning two provincial titles this year. “We had a good build up to perform well at Toro.”

The Manawatu Wanganui Womens Interprovincial team tied for 9th at Westown Golf Club in New Plymouth. The team was disappointed to have their match abandoned due to heavy rain on last month, as they were well on top of opponents Otago for the playoff for 9th. The team finished 5th out of 7 teams in pool play, with a win against Northland and a half against Tasman. Auckland won the event with a 3 - 2 win over Bay of Plenty in a rain affected final. Auckland defeated Wellington in the semi final, and Bay of Plenty defeated 2015 winners Canterbury. For Auckland this was their 5th win in the last 6 years. For Manawatu Wanganui Leanne Brown playing at number 4, had a good tournament with 4 wins from 6 matches, and number 1 Tara Raj (pictured below), was also very good with 3 and a half wins. Mudra Lakhani in her debut Interprovincial had 2 wins.
NEW LOCAL RULE FOR CLUBS TO CONSIDER INTRODUCING
The R&A and the USGA have announced today the introduction of a new Local Rule that eliminates the penalty when a ball is accidentally moved on the putting green. An example of this occurring recently would be the Dustin Johnson incident at the 2016 US Open Championship. This local rule would eliminate that penalty from occurring in the future, if the local rule is introduced by the committee. The Local Rule will be available for any committee or club in charge of a competition to use starting 1 January 2017. It will be adopted by The R&A and the USGA in all of their championships, qualifying
January 2017
competitions and international matches. New Zealand Golf will follow this lead and introduce the local rule in all Jennian Homes Charles Tour Events and National Amateur Championships. Manawatu Wanganui Golf will also consider this rule for all district run events, including all pennant competitions. If a Committee or club wishes to introduce this Local Rule, the following wording is recommended: “Rules 18-2, 18-3 and 20-1 are modified as follows: When a player’s ball lies on the putting green, there is no penalty if the ball or ball-marker is accidentally moved by the player, his partner, his opponent, or any of their caddies or equipment. The moved ball or ball-marker must be replaced as provided in Rules 18-2, 18-3 and 20-1. This Local Rule applies only when the player’s ball or ball-marker lies on the putting green and any movement is accidental. Note: If it is determined that a player’s ball on the putting green was moved as a result of wind, water or some other natural cause such as the effects of gravity, the ball must be played as it lies from its new location. A ball-marker moved in such circumstances is replaced.”
MEN’S CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS RESULTS
The Men’s Champion of Champions and Chamberlain Shield was played in November at Foxton Golf Club. This
WWW.GOLFERPACIFIC.CO.NZ
event brings together the club champions of all the different clubs to find a district champion in each grade and as a club team. The Men’s Senior Champion on the day was Palmerston North’s Rhys Harold with a 2 round total of 144 (75, 69), one shot ahead of Manawatu’s Greg Shaw on 145 (74, 71). Manawatu Interprovincial team number one, Junior Tatana, playing on his home course, looked the most likely after his morning round 70, but a couple of balls over the fence in round 2, resulted in an 80, and well out of contention for the title. The Senior Net winner was Linton Camp player, Sean Griggs with an excellent 2 round total of 137, one shot ahead of Taihape’s Matt Thomas. The Intermediate Champion went to Foxton’s Khalil Peta with a two round total of 160 (80, 80), one shot ahead of Taihape player David Pollard (80, 81). The net winner with 135 was Levin youngster Cameron Giddens. Cameron’s 2nd round 77 gave him a fantastic net score of 63 the best of the day. The Junior Champion was another Foxton player Paul Hanson on 175 (87, 88), three shots ahead of Feildings Allan Lun (89, 89). Paul Hansen also had the best net on 139, and in second and the recipient of the best net voucher was Linton Camp player, Ian Gardner, on 147. The teams competition, the Chamberlain Shield, unsurprisingly, given the individual results was won by the home team Foxton, on a team total (gross aggregate) of 485, nine shots ahead of Taihape on 494. We understand this is the first time Foxton have won this event in the 50 years it has been played - a great result.

MEN’S CLASSIC AT LEVIN
The Levin Golf Club’s Men’s Classic was held and experienced extremely strong winds. This would have been the youngest field we have ever had and despite the weather Cruize Simpson managed a 71 on the second day and was the eventual gross winner. Denzil Tatana won his division and Cameron Giddens was runner up.

Manor Park club champions made up three-fifths of the victorious Wellington team at the Interprovincial Championships which finished last Saturday (December 3). The country’s premier teams’ event was played at the New Plymouth course of Ngamutu and the final was a one-sided affair with Wellington defeating Otago 5-0. Three of the five winning team members are Manor Park club champions. They were Jonathan Cane, who won the 2002 Manor Park championship, Ben Slaven (2008) and Daniel Hillier (2013, 14 and 15). This is a remarkable effort but then again Manor Park is a remarkable club. Ben Slaven is one of the greenkeepers at Manor Park. Make sure you congratulate him if you see him on the mower during the week. Cane was part of the Wellington team when it won the same event at the same venue in 2001. Wellington had also won the tournament in 2010. Cane was ecstatic at the latest win. “It’s an amazing feeling,’’ Cane said. ``Fifteen years to the dot since I first started playing (the event) and 2010 since Wellington last one it. I can’t really describe it. “Everyone here has put in the utmost effort and deserve every bit, from the management to the reserves and family. “We had to play some of the best golf of our life to do it against some great sides so it feels pretty special.” Cane had nearly 13 years away from the game, so his comeback has been quite remarkable. “To be honest this is the reason I came back playing,’’ he said. “I had 12 or 13 years off and the thing I missed the most was the Wellington teams. I have played for New Zealand and

it’s amazing, but you don’t forget these moments. This is my fourth win and it means no less than the other three. It’s pretty special. With a great mix of youth and experience Wellington never looked in doubt in the final. Kerry Mountcastle continued his winning way in the No 5 position to record the team’s first point with a 3 and victory. Mountcastle had six wins and two halves from his eight matches in the fourday tournament. Elton Nicholson, at No 4, won his match in the final 5 and 4 win and Cane sealed the deal on the 15th hole to send the Wellington side into hysterics. These two sides also met in pool play the previous with Wellington prevailing 3-1/2 to 1-1/2. Wellington No 1 Daniel Hillier was awarded player of the tournament after an undefeated week that included an outstanding 4 and 3 (eight under through 15 holes) in the semi-final against Jason Gulasekharam from North Harbour. Said Hillier: “It’s nice to get recognised as player of the tournament, but this feeling is unbelievable. ``The boys have worked so hard all week and it’s a great result of what we have been doing the last 12 months and we are going to celebrate big tonight. “It’s great for Wellington golf with so many young golfers around the region watching us during the week and it’s nice to show them that Wellington is a province that can play and it’s going to be great for the youngsters in future years.”

THE 18TH ALLAN SCOTT WINES MARLBOROUGH WOMEN’S GOLF TOURNAMENT 27, 28, 29 MARCH 2017
Plans are well in hand for the 18th Allan Scott 3 day Tournament being played on the beautifully manicured Marlborough Golf Club at the end of March next year. We’ve had one of the wettest springs on record which has provided lush growth and left the fairways and outlying rough in excellent condition. Our course (land and buildings) dodged any damage following the recent major earthquake, and in fact Blenheim came away with very little damage. Our hard working committee are all on task and are keen to welcome women to Blenheim for a fun filled few days in New Zealand’s largest wine growing region. If you’re not already entered then we suggest you don’t delay, with 95 entries received to date. If golf with friends in the sunshine capital of the country sounds appealing to you, then check out our website www. marlboroughgolf.co.nz for more information, or any inquiries contact prujensen@xtra.co.nz and we look forward to welcoming you to our region. After the Christchurch Earthquake in 2011 we invested in strengthening parts of our winery which safeguarded us from damage in this shake. Overall we lost a couple of bottles of water in the restaurant and had to further strengthen some tanks. The main thing is everyone is safe. The vines are continuing to grow exceptionally well and we are all looking forward to the 2017 vintage.”

16 year old Hiroki Miya. After an unseasonal weather bomb caused the cancellation of the first round of the tournament Hiroki posted a skilfully crafted 69, featuring 4 birdies and a single bogey, in the afternoon round to set the pace. Only one other player managed a par or better round which was testimony to the extreme wind conditions, often gusting over 40kph. On the positive side the winds helped the course dry quickly and round two on December 13th was played in near perfect conditions for most players. Hiroki was again steady and posted a solid score or 74 for a two round total of 143 giving him a three shot win over second placed Jordan Woodall who deservedly claimed the U18 boys title by following his opening par round with a 74 also. In the U21 boys grade a battle emerged between three players and the result was finally decided on the final green. Oscar Cadenhead, who won the 2015 New Zealand title, prevailed with a two round total of 150 (73/77) after Andrew Drummond made a double bogey 6 on the last to give up his 1 shot lead and claim the silver medal. The girls competition was contested in one grade with most of the participants having just returned to Christchurch after representing the Canterbury province. In the New Zealand Women’s Toro Interprovincial tournament. New Zealand Golf’s High Performance Academy member Amelia Garvey finished a strong
year with a two round total of 156 after the challenge from last years Faldo Series Asia New Zealand Champion Juliana Hung was undone by an un characteristic double bogey on the 14th hole. Amelia’s final nine holes were played in level par whilst Juliana could only manage 40 shots. Whilst only an unofficial entrant in the tournament the nine year old Jeong Hyun Lee finished only 1 shot behind Amelia and was awarded the silver medal to commemorate her amazing achievement. Once again the event is extremely thankful for the vision and support of the Canterbury Golf Development Trust. New Zealand age grade winners will travel to Laguna Lang Co Resort near Danang in Vietnam for the Asian Finals contested against 19 other nations in March 2017.

for players on the driving range and now they have been brought across and incorporated into the TV coverage.’’ The technology had its first use at the New Zealand Open earlier this year. “We started it in March at the New Zealand Open then we rolled out the first level of it at the US Open.’’ Feedback from television broadcasters was encouraging, Taylor said. “It has been overwhelming. When we did the first version of it at the US Open, social media just went crazy and, within half an hour, one of the world’s leading golf commentators said this was one of the greatest innovations in golf I have ever seen.’’ The company was testing its system with South African company Flightscope. “This is the last stage of it as we test with the last of the three [companies] that do ball tracking around the world.’’ “It is going really well.’’

Dunedin technology firm Animation Research Ltd is putting the final touches on a system that will take golf watching to new heights. The company was at the Otago Golf Club at Balmacewen last month to test its newly improved Virtual Eye golfing system. Virtual Eye is a tracking system used in several sporting broadcasts including cricket, sailing and golf.

Animation Research has produced technology that captures radar to produce pictures for TV viewers to see the flight of a golfer’s shot in 3-D, chief executive Ian Taylor said. “Because we use radar instead of cameras, radar tracks the ball in 3-D all the way. The camera only tracks it against the picture, so it is 2-D.’’ The concept has the backing of government here and established golfing broadcasters. “It is part of a half million dollar R&D programme we are doing with the Callaghan Institute and the European Tour.’’ The system teams a range of inputs to produce not just pictures, but also data for both TV viewers and professional golfers. “It has club head speed, ball speed, the speed the ball rotates and anything you can think of.’’ “Those things were originally designed
