hat happened at the United States Open? This is the tournament where, generally, even par is just about a winning score. The course at Erin Hills in Winconsin looked formidable. It measured a very long 7100m and pictures of the long grass in the rough dominated most previews of the event. It looked like even par would, indeed, be a great score. But what happened? Even par got you 32nd. The winning score, by Brooks Keopka, was 16 under par. There was a total of 27 players who broke par. In the third round Justin Thomas posted a nine-under par 63, matching the lowest score in major championship history and breaking the lowest score in relation to par at the US Open. So it can’t have been that hard. But then at the other end of

Funny game, golf the scale the world’s top three ranked players Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day along with one of my favourite players Henrik Stenson didn’t even make the cut. Funny game, golf. One over par was the cut line but Johnson, McIlroy and Day weren’t even close. Johnson was four over, McIlroy five over and Day 10 over par. So it must have been hard. McIlroy said before the tournament the long grass of the rough would not be a concern because the fairways were wide. So the course wouldn’t be that hard. The long distance of the course, the longest in the history of the four majors, would suit the big hitters, said many. Keopka fits that bill but Brian Harman, who shared second, is far from long off the tee. Yet another contradic-

tion. Funny game, golf. The US Open is supposed to be the toughest test in golf. Back in 1974, one year after Johnny Miller famously posted a final-round 63 to win at Oakmont, US Golf Association (USGA) president Sandy Tatum presided over what became known as “The Massacre at Winged Foot,” which Hale Irwin won with a score of seven over par. When questioned about the organisation’s dastardly set-up, Tatum simply replied, “We’re not trying to embarrass the best players in the world. We’re trying to identify them.” That has always held as the standard company line, but there’s no question the USGA has relished its role as the wicked witch of the four major championships. Since 1990, the winning score has ranged from 271 on the

low end to 285 on the high end, save for McIlroy’s 268 in 2011 at a Congressional course so waterlogged it became an exception to the rule. The long grass of the rough at Erin Hills made for good pictures but clearly it did not come into the picture for a good number of the golfers. Justin Thomas, who scored 63 in the third round, said: ``The US Open is supposed to be very uncomfortable. It’s kind of what the USGA and US Open is known for — making you kind of hate yourself and hate golf and just really struggle out there. I don’t mean that in a bad way.” Funny game, golf. We now look forward to the British Open at Royal Birkdale. Will the rough be penal, will the fairways be narrow, will the bunkers be impossible, will the big hitters be suited? Who knows. Great game, golf.

Lynnette Brooky has the drive to make a good showing at NZ Open By Paul Gueorgieff Golfer Pacific editor

GOLF NEWS

T

here are the obvious reasons why Lynnette Brooky has decided to play the New Zealand Open. ``I am playing because the prize fund is good. And I am also playing because it’s the best players in the world, as they say. And it’s at my back door — I don’t have to fly half-way round the world to play in a golf tournament.’’ That was Brooky’s initial response to why she accepted an invitation to compete in our national open which this year takes on extra special significance. The tournament, to be played at Windross Farm in south Auckland from September 28-October 1, has become part of the world’s richest golf circuit, the Ladies Professional Golfers’ Association (LPGA) Tour. As a consequence the prizemoney has soared from $NZ300,000 to $US1.3 million and many of the world’s best golfers will be on hand, including New Zealand star Lydia Ko. But delve a little deeper with Brooky and you find a number of underlying reasons why New Zealand’s former No 1 player is taking on such a task at the age of 49. Brooky, who as an amateur won two New Zealand Strokeplay Championships, a New Zealand Matchplay Championship and an Australian Strokeplay Championship, feels her success as a golfer has not been remembered as it should. As a professional she played the Ladies European Tour where she won four times, including two French Opens in 2002 and 2003. That’s no mean feat but when she goes about her business today as a

golf coach she says she is often asked who are you? Brooky said that sentiment is no more apparent when teaching children at one of her golf academies in Wellington. ``Some of the kids at school, they are asked do you know Lynnette Brooky? They have no idea,’’ Brooky said. But the disappointment is greater when she visits some sports organisations where she would expect recognition. ``When you go to New Zealand Golf, is there anything up there of past golfers like myself? Is there any exhibitions of past golfers doing anything for schools or anything? Is there in

Porirua, when I have lived all my life, in the Hall of Fame of sport, a photo of me up there? No. ``They’ve got Michael Campbell, all the rugby players that have made it... but nobody knows of me.’’ Brooky said it is with irony that when her name is mentioned at the Hall of Fame it is only because she sponsors the sportswoman of the year title. Given those circumstances Brooky said her burning desire to perform well in the New Zealand Open was to educate her younger golf students about who she is. ``I would love to show the kids that I can play. There are a lot of kids back here in New Zealand that don’t know me and that’s one of the main reasons

I will be out there playing. Half of New Zealand has forgotten about me, even when I was still out there on tour.’’ Brooky retired from tour golf about three years ago but she did make a re-apperance at the previous New Zealand Open held in February of last year. She failed to make the cut but was not disgraced. She was on the back foot after an opening round of 81 but had one of the best scores on the second day when shooting 69. Brooky said she will be better prepared this time round. She will join her husband Ian Godleman in England this month for four weeks of intense training. Godleman, an English golf coach, spends the northern hemisphere summer in England and Europe. ``We are going to get my clubhead speed up,’’ Brooky said. ``I’m striking the ball really well. Because of the long break that I have had, it has given me a fresh feel. I am actually quite hungry. I’ll be working damn hard. I will be one of Ian’s students and I will be working every day.’’ She is also hoping to stage a pro-am event at Manor Park Golf Sanctuary in Wellington as part of her New Zealand Open preparation. ``I want to get the public involved and get my hype up. ``I will be turning 50 next year and I want this to be a bonus in my life. If anybody wants to put me down, I’ll just look at them and think they are sad people. ``My body is not stopping and my brain is getting muscle power with all the thinking I have being doing. All I do is talk positive, positive, positive. I think I have forgotten how to be negative.’’

Canadian golf star to play NZ Women’s Open GOLF NEWS 6

C

anadian teenage golf sensation Brooke Henderson is the first international LPGA Tour star to confirm her place in the field for the New Zealand Women’s Open in Auckland. The current US PGA women’s champion will join Kiwi superstar Lydia Ko to contest the first LPGA event in New Zealand, to be staged at Windross Farm Golf Course in south Auckland from September 28-October 1. Henderson, 19, is about 15th on the world rankings after making a spectacular start to her professional career, including beating Ko in a playoff in the PGA Championship. The 2014 Canadian Amateur champion gained membership to the LPGA after a Monday-qualifying win at the Portland Open in 2015 — at that stage the third youngest winner in LPGA history. She went on to win the women’s PGA Championship last year and successfully defend her Portland Open crown. “I am super excited to go to New Zealand golf,’’ Henderson said. “I have always wanted to go. I have heard so much about the culture and the landscape there. Lydia is from there and we have become friends these last few years and so I am excited to go and check out where she is from.” New Zealand Women’s Open tournament director Michael Goldstein said

the early confirmation of Henderson was great news for the tournament. “We want to bring some of the world’s best women’s golfers to New Zealand and Brooke is most definitely one of the stars of the LPGA Tour,” Goldstein said. “She is to Canadian golf what Lydia Ko is to New Zealand. She is a young and exciting player who has already proved she can beat the best in the world. To confirm a reigning major champion is an exciting addition to the tournament and we look forward to welcoming Brooke to Auckland.” Henderson won three times on the Canadian Tour while still an amateur before moving to the professional ranks aged 17, winning a Symetra Tour event in her first professional start before a sponsor invitation led to a tie for fifth at the US Open in 2015. Her victory in the Portland Open in 2015 earned promotion to the LPGA where she has been a commanding performer over the last 18 months, climbing at one point to No 2 in the world. Henderson said the influence of Ko, currently the world’s No 3 ranked player after 85 straight weeks at the top of the world rankings, plays a significant part in the Canadian’s career. “Lydia really is amazing and such a nice person as well. I look up to her and

July 2017

I think we both have fed off each other a little bit. I am always chasing her and her accomplishments have helped me chase after my goals as well.” Family is a big part of golf life for Henderson with sister Brittany as her caddy while her father Dave remains her coach. “To have my sister caddy and travel with me — we are together 24 hours, seven days a week — it is so cool. She is my best friend, she is my caddy and she looks after hotel accommodations and things like that. I owe a lot to her to have her by my side all the time,” Henderson said. “My mum and my dad have sacrificed so much for my sister and I to be in the position that we are, to be able to travel the world and be on the LPGA Tour. “Mum doesn’t play golf but she is our number one cheerleader and dad is our coach and has been since I was three years old. I wouldn’t be in the position I am without him. We share so much in common and we love to be around each other.” The organisers of the New Zealand Open, sponsored by McKayson, said they were thrilled to have two stars confirmed this early for

the tournament and will name further sponsors and players in the coming weeks. Hospitality packages for the open are now on sale with three options to choose from. Also a limited number of four-day season passes are available at $99 plus a booking fee. Single day passes are available at $39 for Thursday and Friday and $49 per day for Saturday and Sunday, both plus a booking fee. PHOTO: LPGA TOUR

Golden Oldies sports event in Christchurch Bob Charles will be joined as an ambassador by cricketers Barry Richards and Mike Proctor, along with Christchurch bowls maestro Gary Lawson. Other ambassadors are Sir Graham Henry (rugby), Brendon Pongia (basketball), Rod Latham (cricket), Selwyn Maister (hockey), Julie Seymour (netball), Alan Stroud (football), Jo Edwards (lawn bowls), Barry Gardiner (squash), Todd Blackadder (rugby) and Cheryl Kemp (softball). Peter McDermott, Golden Oldies Sports Celebration 2018 event director said the organisation was extremely fortunate to have such an amazing group of golden oldies sports advocates join its ambassador team to help tell the Golden Oldies 2018 story here and overseas. “Our initial group of ambassadors was largely Canterbury based, recognising the importance of engaging the local region first and foremost,” said Mr McDermott. “We are now focused on attracting up to 70 percent of the forecast 10,000 participants from overseas and our new ambassadors, along with some of the very high profile

Kiwis, will provide strong voices and faces to help us do so.” Nicky Wagner, the government minister supporting Greater Christchurch Regeneration, said the event is a golden opportunity to showcase Christchurch to the 7000 overseas participants and 2000 Kiwis from outside Canterbury who are expected to attend this monthlong celebration of fun, friendship and fraternity. The Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration 2018 will mark the first time all 10 sports will come together in one global festival. It is expected to inject a projected $33 million of direct economic benefit into the Canterbury region. Beneficiaries of the Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration 2018 are Cure Kids and the Leverage and Legacy Committee. Support for the event is provided by New Zealand Major Events (MBIE), the Christchurch City Council, the Rata Foundation, Tourism New Zealand and Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism. Rule changes for Golden OIdies tournament

I

f you are going to play golf at the Golden Oldies Sports Celebration in Christchurch next year you will never have to play a provisional shot if you consider the ball may be lost. Instead you will place a replacement ball near the point where it was last seen or on the line of entry to where it was lost. Otherwise a drop zone can be located to not require the player to play over the hazard again. That is one example of the change to the rules that New Zealand golf legend Bob Charles has implemented for the tournament to be held from April 8-14 at four different courses in Christchurch. Other rule changes include:-

BUNKERS

• Ball may be placed outside the bunker no nearer the hole for a penalty of one stroke.

FLAGSTICK

• Ball may be putted with the flagstick unattended without penalty.

PENALTIES

• Club may be grounded in a bunker or hazard without penalty provided the lie is not improved. Should the lie be improved a one stroke penalty will occur. • All rule infringements carry a one stroke penalty.

PLACING

• Within in one club length allowed on closely mown areas of hole in play. • Ball should be placed within one club length of the point of relief from immovable objects.

MORE THAN 33,000 GOLF COURSES AROUND THE WORLD G olf continues to expand into all parts of the globe. There are now golf facilities in 208 of the world’s 245 countries as at the end of 2016, according to a report entitled Golf Around The World, that is published by The Royal & Ancient and based on research from the National Golf Foundation. The report, first released in 2014, explores the game’s global reach in terms of the supply of both existing golf facilities and those in development. R&A executive director Duncan Weir said: “There isn’t a day that goes past when we don’t use the report to answer a query, to help us make a point or to help us write a story. And just in general in research when making a decision pertaining to golf around the world, it’s invaluable.” The study found there are a total of 33,161 global golf facilities, but the sport remains geographically concentrated, with 74 percent of the world’s supply located in the top 10 golfing countries — the United States, Canada, Japan, England, Australia, Germany, France, Scotland, Sweden and South Africa. The top 20 countries account for 89 percent of the global supply, but countries from Djibouti and Togo to Tajikistan and Christmas Island are all home to golf courses. The United States is the best‑supplied golf market in the world with 15,013 facilities – approximately 45 percent of the global supply – as indicated by the National Golf Foundation’s most recent annual count.

Europe has the second‑largest regional share of golf facilities, with 22 percent, followed by Asia at 14 percent and Oceania (Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific) at six percent. Asia is the most active region for new course development, with 176 golf course projects (measured by 18‑hole equivalents) either in planning or under construction. World-wide, there were a total of 556 new projects in various stages of development at the end of 2016, an indication of golf’s continued expansion. Golf and tourism go hand‑in‑hand, with more than half of the new projects tied to resorts, from the Costa Jama Beach & Golf Resort in Ecuador to the Rees Jones‑designed Dazante Bay on Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. The R&A’s Golf Around the World report offers a comprehensive breakdown of the number of facilities by country, detailing how the game is being used both as an engine of sport and recreation as well as economic development, regional planning and community build out. Said Weir: “There are many ways of measuring how many people play golf and sometimes it’s difficult to get consistency of measurement from one country to the next, but you cannot argue with something that’s on the ground – that is the number of golf courses and golf facilities.” For more information, or to download a digital copy of the R&A’s Golf Around The World report, please visit www.randa.org.

R&A recommends ready, set, go GOLF NEWS 10

T

he Royal & Ancient will introduce what is known as ready golf at its amateur championships this year as part of its efforts to improve pace of play. Ready golf features in The R&A’s pace of play manual as a recommended solution for tackling slow play and enables golfers to play when they are ready to do so rather than strictly adhering to the requirement of furtherest from the hole plays first. The practice can be used in strokeplay and includes a number of actions that can help to improve the flow of golfers around the course and reduce the time taken by players to complete a round. Examples of ready golf include hitting a tee shot if the person with the honour is delayed in being ready to play, playing a shot before helping someone look for a ball and adopting continuous putting when possible. The R&A’s portfolio of amateur events has expanded following its merger with the Ladies’ Golf Union (LGU) on January 1 this year and ready golf will feature in both men’s and women’s cham-

pionships where strokeplay is part of the format, including the forthcoming Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship at Pyle & Kenfig and The Amateur Championship at Royal St George’s and Prince’s. Duncan Weir, executive director – golf development at The R&A, said: “We support solutions that address the issue of slow play and ready golf is an effective means of reducing the time it takes to complete a round. “Our research has shown that golfers would enjoy the sport more if it took less time to play and so we are introducing ready golf during the strokeplay rounds at our amateur championships to help improve pace of play and the experience for the players and spectators.” The R&A published the pace of play manual for golfers, administrators and golf course managers last year to encourage the use of recommended solutions which effectively addresses issues of slow play and to increase golfers’ enjoyment of playing the game.

GOLF TO REMAIN AT THE OLYMPICS FOR THE NEAR FUTURE

T

he International Golf Federation (IGF) has welcomed news that golf is set to remain in the Olympic Games through to at least 2024. The executive board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved that all 28 sports from the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games will return in 2024. A statement released by the IGF said: “The IGF is gratified to learn of the IOC executive board’s decision to include golf in its recommendation for the Olympic Games programme in 2024. “We look forward to learning the outcome of the final vote at the IOC session in September. “We were always confident that golf would deliver exciting men’s and women’s competitions in Rio de Janeiro and even at that, it exceeded our expectations. Now, we are excited to build upon the success from last year as we prepare for the 2020 Games in Tokyo and, hopefully, beyond.” The recommendation of the IOC executive board is set to be ratified

July 2017

by all IOC members at the 130th IOC session in the Peruvian capital of Lima on September 13. On that date, it will also be announced whether the 2024 Olympics will be hosted by Paris or Los Angeles. Golf will be played in the 2020 Games at Kasumigaseki Country Club in Tokyo. Golf made its return to the Olympics in 2016 for the first time since 1904. England’s Justin Rose and Korean Park In-bee won the gold medals while New Zealand’s Lydia Ko won silver. It had already been confirmed that golf would remain part of the Olympic programme for Tokyo in 2020. However, questions had been raised about golf’s longer-term future as an Olympic event. Many of the world’s leading male golfers were conspicuous by their absence from the Rio Games – Rory McIroy, Dustin Johnson, Jason Day and Jordan Spieth among the high-profile players to withdraw. But that may not be the case for Tokyo.

STUDY FINDS THAT FAMILY IS A KEY TO GOLF PARTICIPATION

A

n independent study has revealed the importance of family to growing the game of golf. The comprehensive research, carried out by Sports Marketing Surveys Incorporated for the Golf Foundation, involved quantitative surveys during which parents and guardians, junior golfers, club officials and coaches were surveyed across England and Wales. The results highlighted the fact that 99 percent of parents see golf as providing a very safe environment for their children, and that 95 percent also believe the sport can teach their children valuable life skills. Perhaps most revealing, however, was the confirmation that the vast majority of junior golfers (71 percent) would like to play more golf with their parents. “The results of the survey prove that golf can have a hugely positive impact on a child’s upbringing,” said Brendon Pyle, chief executive of the Golf Foundation. “We know that we can provide safe environments for children of all ages but it was particularly pleasing to see that younger children also have a real appetite to play the sport with their parents. “Golf is perhaps the only sport where multiple generations of the same family can play together over decades and even compete. ``The fact that 71 percent of children surveyed expressed a real interest in playing with their parents proves that if clubs can provide an environment in which all ages feel welcome and comfortable, the sport will grow.” A key catchment for attracting youngsters to the game of golf is between six and 12 years of age, during which 67 percent of the United Kingdom’s participating junior golfers first take up the game. Juniors questioned confirmed that factors including availability of junior courses and academies, tolerant members, the ability to bring friends along for free and topically, more varied team formats, are the primary factors in retaining junior members. The powers that be, including the European Tour, have acknowledged the need for alternative forms of the game and this has culminated in the creation of professional events such as GolfSixes. The Golf Foundation is also testing this format in 32 golf clubs this summer, with European Tour support.

One round of golf worth a week’s exercise, says report

O

ne round of golf could be as good for you as a week’s worth of exercise. That’s the view of the United Kingdom’s leading source of cancer care, Macmillan Cancer Support. According to a report in The Golf Business, the charity said the health benefits of golf are being overlooked. It said that during a typical single round of golf, players walk for four to eight miles – and take between 11,245 and 16,667 steps. Citing research in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, it added that this would burn around 1564 calories if you are carrying your own golf clubs. With an average round of golf taking four hours (240 minutes) of moderate intensive activity, this goes beyond the Department of Health’s recommendation

that adults take at least 150 minutes of moderate intense activity. And being a relatively low intensity exercise, it means that enthusiasts can keep golfing into old age, when more vigorous sports may be difficult. Research undertaken into 300,000 Swedish golfers has found that the death rate for golfers is 40 percent lower than for other people of the same sex, age and socio-economic status. This amounts to a five-year increase in life expectancy, with the golfers with the lowest handicaps, in other words the most skilled golfers, benefiting most. Elizabeth Connare, marketing programme manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, was quoted by The Golf Business as saying: “Some people might be surprised

July 2017

to hear that a game of golf sees players walking well over their 10,000 daily steps and burning over 1,500 calories. Macmillan had released the information ahead of a fund-raising event called the Longest Day Challenge. On the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere, June 21, the charity was encouraging golfers to play four rounds of golf over 16 hours of daylight. Challengers played from sunrise (4.45 am) through to sunset (9.21 pm), using every minute of the 16 hours and 38 minutes of daylight available to them. Clubbing together a team of four, contestants played 72 holes, took some 300 shots and covered around 20 miles.

Different format used to determine winner of Korea Open GOLF NEWS

A

playoff was required to decide the winner of the Korea Open but it was little different from the usual. Most professional tournaments these days use the sudden-death method to find a winner if there is a tie for the lead. That’s where those tied for the lead usually head back to the 18th tee and the person with the lowest score on the hole is awarded victory. If no outright winner is found on the first occasion that format is repeated by those with the lowest score until a winner is found. In the Korea Open, played at Woo Jeong Hills Country Club, there was a tie between Koreans Chang Yikeun and Kim Gi-whan. They then headed out for a three-hole playoff on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes with the best total score on those holes to be acclaimed the winner. Victory went to Chang, who had previously been ranked 553rd in the world. He had a cumulative score of 12 (par, birdie, double-bogey) while Kim, who had been the overnight leader, matched Chang’s par on the 16th but bogeyed the next and double bogeyed the 18th for a total of 15. Chang, two shots adrift of Kim at the start of the day, birdied the final three holes in regulation play to card a 70 while Kim matched Chang’s birdies on 17 and 18 for a battling one-over 72. They were tied on seven-under 277, one stroke

ahead of last year’s runner-up Choi Jin-ho, who climbed the leaderboard with a best-of-the-day 65, and Hur In-hoi (69). Chang, who entered the $US1 million Korea Open via a OneAsia category, and Kim earned spots in The Open at Royal Birkdale this month. Both the 23-year-old Chang and Kim looked to have blown their chances of victory with damaging double-bogeys before finishing with a flourish. Chang, who was second in the Yeangder Heritage in Chinese Taipei at the end of April, had a double-bogey at the 14th and bogeyed the next as the tension mounted. Kim opened brightly with a birdie before a double-bogey at the par-five fifth and three straight bogeys from the eighth sent the 26-year-old tumbling down the leaderboard. Chang, who earned the first prize of $US270,000, said: “I made a mistake at the 14th hole that led to a double-bogey. However, I thought that there were many holes left, and I tried to think as positively as possible. It’s great to get the win.” Kim, who has suffered a series of runner-up finishes on the Korean Tour, was defiant in defeat. “Although I did not win the championship, I am content to compete without giving up until the end, and when I get another chance next time, I will end up winning,” he said.

In a dramatic tournament, the lead changed several times with the main challengers experiencing a mixture of emotions. Choi, OneAsia’s reigning No 1 player, set the clubhouse target of six-under 278 with his closing 65. The Korean, who came into the tournament bang in form after winning the SK Telecom Open for the second time a fortnight previously, birdied four of the final six holes, including the par-five 18th. Hur, a one-time winner on the Japan Tour, had the tournament at his mercy thanks to four birdies in six holes from the eighth. Back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16 halted his march to the title before a birdie on 17 took him back into the lead. Needing a par at 18 to stay ahead of Choi, Hur bogeyed to fall into a tie on six under 278. Teenage amateur Kim Dong-min, who had kept himself in the hunt with eight straight pars from the turn, required a birdie at the last to overtake Choi and Hur but the 18-year-old hit his drive out of bounds and chalked up a triple bogey-eight. He carded a 73 to finish in a tie for sixth place with Choi Min-chel (74), four shots adrift of top spot. Korean-born American Kevin Na, the highest ranked player in the field at world number 62, shot a level-par 71 in the final round to finish tied 13th. The 60th Korea Open was the third event on OneAsia’s schedule for 2017.

Fore: The life of four caddies

F

ore is the story of four professional caddies who were raised within a few doors of each other in a small road in the Birkdale area of Southport, England, and who happened to caddy for the winners of no less than 10 golf opens and numerous other prestigious tournaments over a period of 15 years. When they were young, the

Birkdale boys, as they would become known, had a vision of making their living out of caddying and of going on to win in a big way. This book shows how their dreams became a reality. Alfie Fyles, the main character in the book, had another dream — that he would write a book of his life experiences and, using the anecdotes and funny tales he

used to regale everyone with, reveal the truth that was behind their success and the rollercoaster existence of numerous other characters who were on the golf circuit at that time. Fyles made and lost a fortune in his career and lived his life in his own inimitable way. He didn’t answer to anyone and, although his bills were all

paid and his funeral was accounted for, he died with just a few hundred pounds to his name. The book is hilarious in places and will make you cry in others, and it shows the human face of the four Birkdale boys, ever mindful of the opens, who would support some of the most prestigious golfers the world has seen to date.

New Zealand Golf moves office to Remuera Golf Club By Dean Murphy New Zealand Golf Chief Executive

E

arlier this month New Zealand Golf moved its national office from the North Shore of Auckland to a new facility at the Remuera Golf Club in Auckland. New Zealand Golf has for some time been working on a Home of Golf project that had the goal of establishing a dedicated administration headquarters for New Zealand Golf. This project followed the national facility study carried out by an independent firm in 2013. Following a process that sought expressions of interest from the golf sector, we thoroughly reviewed 11 applications based on a set range of criteria including location, facil-

ities and the proposed financial model. Following this thorough process, in late 2016, the board of New Zealand Golf elected the Remuera club as the preferred candidate for the future home of the New Zealand Golf administration headquarters. The new national office space started out as a rundown basement used for trundler storage. However, after a full renovation over a three-month period it is now a sensational office space that has many heads turning as golfers walk off the nearby 18th green. New Zealand Golf was previously based in a commercial building which while adequate, was not meeting the needs of the organisation. Given our business is golf, it is far preferable to be closer aligned to the game and to be based at a golf

facility. Additionally, the new location at Remuera Golf Club has access to meeting rooms, conference rooms, a café, bar and restaurant plus a golf course and training facilities. In addition, there is significant onsite storage for all New Zealand Golf’s tournament equipment. New Zealand Golf requires use of these facilities regularly so to have them all in one place at the national headquarters is an ideal and very cost effective outcome. After a great deal of work by many parties, I’m pleased to say we are all moved in and fully operational. While we have only been here a few weeks, I must say we have been overwhelmed by the support received from the Remuera Golf Club. The club is very progressive and

outstandingly lead by manager Chris Davies and we couldn’t be happier that they are our new landlords. Perhaps most significantly, the move to Remuera will enable significant savings for New Zealand Golf. While we are incurring several set-up costs in year one that mean our rental costs will remain at current levels for the first year, from year two New Zealand Golf will save a significant amount of money. Importantly, the lease investment from New Zealand Golf also stays in the golf sector rather than the commercial world which is a great additional benefit for the game. Next time you are in Auckland and driving past the club, pop in and say hello. We’d love to show around our new office.

GOLFCOMMENT

Is your golf course a fair golf course? By Andrew Whiley A voice from the south

K

evin Na is not my favourite player on the PGA Tour but I did enjoy his video that circulated around the practice days of the US Open, about the rough and how the Fescue grass was penalising. Even funnier was Lee Westwood’s caddy, Billy Foster, who was able to disappear in the rough and then slowly swim through it to emerge on to the first cut of rough. This clearly showed how penalising the rough would be at the event and how it could change how the golfers would play the course. On the Tuesday prior to the start of the tournament, I was surprised to see pictures on golf websites of more than 20 green-keeping staff cutting back the Fescue over a 200 metre stretch down one side of the fairway. I understand they did this on at least three other fairways.

So my questions are: “Was the golf course fairly set up?” and “How will the USGA’s reaction to a winning score of 16-under, affect how they set up the golf course in the future?” It might have been a different story if the typical seasonal wind had blown or if the golf course was hard and bouncy as it normally would have been at this time of year. Thank goodness the wind didn’t blow too badly over the four days. Personally, I believe that a team of past US Open champions should be involved in setting up major championship golf courses. Brooks Koepka played unbelievably well, to shoot a final round of 67 where he hit 86 percent of all the fairways and hit 94 percent of the greens in regulation. The week prior he was ranked 179th in driving accuracy but I am still stunned how the course played out. How do four of the top five players in the world miss

the cut? In the third round, Justin Thomas shot an amazing 63 thanks to two amazing three-wood shots that travelled close to 300 yards. So, what about your course? On my travels earlier this year, I saw many golf courses set up in different ways but it’s important that most club courses need to focus on their own audience. When I look at dotgolf, I can see that 50 percent of all New Zealand golfers have an average handicap of 19.9 or better. In my opinion, that means that your golf courses should ideally be set up to suit the 25 percent best golfers in your club (those with around a 14 handicap). Less than 10 percent of all golfers play off a 9 or better handicap. Setting up a golf course suited to the 14 handicapper creates some challenges for the better players but also allows the 30 handicapper get around and enjoy the course. Cutting the rough away to be

July 2017

softer on the right-hand side of the fairway about 180 metres off the club tees is also a great option. This will go a long way to ensure that both the men and women enjoy their golf, especially when they hit those frustrating slices off the tee. Our golf courses in New Zealand do not need a lot of rough. It’s not a lot of fun for most golfers, whether they’re members or green fee players, and it definitely slows up play having to spend ages trying to find your ball. Ultimately, catering a golf course to the majority of your clientele makes good commercial sense as well as making the course more fun. I have yet to see a green fee player walk off a golf course beaten up, who comes into the clubhouse saying “Wasn’t that fun, I want to do that again!”. Usually, it is “Forget this place, I wont’ be back!” Now don’t even get me started about playing Saturday club golf off of the back tees in winter.

New Zealand has been well represented at Royal Birkdale in the past By Duncan Simpson New Zealand PGA Secretary

M

ichael Hendry will continue a record of strong New Zealand representation in The Open Championships at Royal Birkdale when he tees it up this month at this iconic links. In the nine previous British Opens at Birkdale, we have had players in eight of them, going back to when Peter Thomson won here in 1954. At the time of writing, Michael was our only representative, with others relying on qualifying tournaments or entry points such as the Scottish Open. Considering the Royal Birkdale course was designed originally in 1889 by George Low, who also had a hand in nearby Royal Lytham & St Annes, Birkdale was a late addition to the Open roster, and didn’t host the championship until 1954. Royal Birkdale’s dominant feature is its massive sand dunes — this stretch of the English west coast is renowned for them, and like all British Open venues, the weather can and usually does play a major part. It plays to a tough par of 70. Padraig Harrington’s winning score at the last Birkdale Open in 2008 was three over par, and the one before that (1998) saw Mark

O’Meara beat Brian Watts in a four hole playoff after both had finished regulation play on even par. Greg Turner recorded our best Birkdale result that year: a tie for 15th at nine over par. Trailing some distance behind were Michael Campbell and Michael Long, who both finished 66th on 19 over. Frank Nobilo and Steven Alker also started, but missed the cut. We also had five players in the field in 1971, when Lee Trevino had a famous victory. Back then the course played to a par of 72. Bob Charles finished 18th on one over par, John Lister 25th (+4), Walter Godfrey 40th (+8), while Alistair Palmer made it through three rounds, but missed the cut for the fourth round. Alan Snape was the fifth Kiwi, missing the cut after the second round. A feature of Opens at that time was the two cut process, with only the top 50 and ties playing the final round. Another rule that has since been dispensed with is the 10 shot rule. Anyone within 10 shots of the leader after 36 holes got to play the weekend. In the 1991 Open, won by Ian Baker-Finch, this led to a staggering 113 players making the cut, creating a nightmare for the R & A officials and those trying to calculate the

prizemoney split. Frank Nobilo was 73rd that year; Greg Turner was among the 43 players who missed the cut. There have been many memorable moments at Royal Birkdale, none more so than Arnold Palmer’s extraordinary shot on the 15th hole in the final round. Palmer had narrowly missed out in the centenary Open at St Andrews the previous year, and came to Birkdale determined to put his name on the Claret Jug trophy. Wild weather wiped out the entire Friday’s play (in those days the Open finished with 36 holes on Friday, Saturday being reserved for a 36 hole playoff if required, and the Sabbath being sacrosanct). Palmer’s tee shot on the 15th finished in deep rough behind a small gorse bush — most players would have taken a penalty drop at that point. Not Palmer. He went directly at the green with a six iron, removing a large divot and the entire bush, to somehow get the ball 140 metres over cross bunkers onto the green. A plaque commemorates the spot. That was enough to win by one from perpetual runner-up Dai Rees. Palmer came back the following year to win again at Royal Troon, by which stage the Open Championship was firmly estab-

lished amongst the top US golfers, leading to victories at Birkdale by Trevino, Johnny Miller, Tom Watson and Mark O’ Meara. Hale Irwin, who played in the 2013 NZ PGA Championship, could well have been another American player with his name on the trophy. Those of you who have butchered the odd short putt will relate to this. In 1983, Irwin missed a one inch putt to finish second one shot behind Tom Watson. He somehow stubbed his putter on the green, resulting in an air shot. Irwin, who had won two US Opens in 1974 and 1979, was never to win an Open Championship, but recovered from what must have been a shattering experience at Birkdale to win a third US Open at Medinah in 1990, sinking a 15 metre putt (obviously more his length) on the final hole to enter a playoff with Mike Reid, which he won comfortably. So Michael Hendry is following in the footsteps of a rich history, and although he is playing in his first golf major, he has the game to acquit himself well. Bad weather will not be an issue, thanks to a good grounding in Charles Tour events at courses like Ngamotu during the spring equinox. Go well Michael.

Are Golf Simulators the way of the future? By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional

I

t’s been a crazy month for us here at 100% Golf ltd as not only are we preparing for the Lions Rugby Tour invasion but also finishing our new golf studio here at the shop. Golf studio’s (or more Golf Simulators) are a bit of a growth industry currently as many are setting up in garages for home use. My wife refers to ours as my man cave but of course I look at it as an asset. They do come at an expense once you add the software, radar technology and general build that could add up to around $20000 (thankfully I managed a sponsor “Insurance Towers”) but I have become a fan. Why my wife thinks it’s a man cave is that I love playing the simulator courses. Funny enough it’s actually motivated

me to play again as I had a small lay off from playing. I now get why people want to have one at their home and starting to realise why it’s such an important asset for our business. With the studio initial thought was to create an area indoors we can use to club fit and coach. The simulator play was supposed to be added later but it was so good we added it at the start. I can just imagine people coming down here in their lunch break, ordering a coffee and some lunch and playing a few holes then head back to work knowing they got their golf fix. With regular golfers playing 18 holes takes around 1 hour with the computer working out the amount of putts for each person. It’s quite fun when they give you a 10 foot birdie but not so good when you 3 putt from 30 feet from time to time. Chipping is a challenge to

judge the distance but isn’t it like that normally anyway? So I am hooked but it’s not only the play that has increased my motivation. The club fitting element is very practical now where we can establish correct specs for players indoors then if we need to can move outdoors to test more. I guess an advantage of having it here at a club. Coaching is an area that I will also use the studio to establish patterns, record improvement data, track player progress and get more accurate feedback as to swing and ball elements. Video can also used and no more cancelled lessons because of rain will be a bonus. So you can likely tell I am over the moon with the studio we have created. It also means I can do some more testing of equipment and create more online

videos. I never like hearing my own voice but it’s a chance to help golfers out there if I can. So if you are looking at setting up a Simulator yourself look seriously at using a known supplier. Golf Technologies have been awesome with me and are also the ones I purchased my FlightScope from. Blakies Agencies also builds these using a different system. A tip to save money is to do most of the work yourself in regards to setting up screen, safety, painting and set up. You may need these guys for the technical issues and advice as there are lots of aspects that pop up along the journey. Pop in to have a look or book in for a play here in Rotorua or look for our videos online.

One of the main things that he sees his role is to help people enjoy their golf more. GOLF TRAILS

NEWS FROM AROUND THE REGIONS

NORTHLAND NORTHLAND REPRESENTATIVE TRIALS

The 2017 representative season is underway with Trials having already begun, first off the bat was the Tom Bonnington Cup for Men and Mangawhai Trophy for Women competitions held at Mangawhai GC, 27th and 28th May. The players would have been thankful that the event was greeted with fine weather over the weekend as they attempted to conquer the difficult Mangawhai course. 14 players lined up in the womens field with Kylie Jacoby, Belinda May, Jenny Peters, Alayna Cox and Jo Taylor all in attendance to register early selection points for the 2017 senior women’s side. Jacoby opened with a round of 78 to leave her one shot adrift heading into day two, while May and Peters were four and five shots behind leader Vaha Fapiano from North Shore GC, Cox and Taylor both a little further adrift. A strong finish from Belinda May recording three birdies on her final three holes wasn’t enough to close the gap after a string of bogeys through the middle of her round. While Jacoby seemed to be cruising for victory until an untimely double bogey on her penultimate hole reduced her lead to one shot, a par on the last and a bogey for her closest competitor ensured Jacoby went back to back after her victory at the same event in 2016. In the mens field, Local Scott Wightman and Kerikeri’s Taylor Gill made solid starts in the field of 67 both carding rounds of 73 to be four shots back from first round leader Jake Lee (69). Other Northland hopefuls Alex Neely and Christian Nitsche both signed for 75, while Jamie Thomas (77), Gavin Ashwell (77) and Kadin Neho (83) were further back in the pack. Gill made a strong start to day two turning in one under 35 before a four over 40 on the back put a stop to his chances, Wightman was the opposite sitting at two over for the front nine before birdying two of his last three holes to card another round of 73 to finish in seventh place and the leading Northland player. North Harbour representative Jake Meenhorst eventually stormed home with a round of 67 to go with his one under round of 71 to finish the tournament six under par. Mangawhai Trophy Results (Northland): K Jacoby – 154, B May – 158, J Peters – 164, A Cox – 173, J Taylor – 188. Tom Bonnington Cup (Northland): S Wightman (Mangawhai) – 146, T Gill (BOI Kerikeri) – 148, C Nitsche (Whangarei) – 151, J Thomas (Wellsford) – 153, A Neely (BOI Kerikeri) – 154, L Newman (Manga-

20

whai) – 159, K Neho (Whangarei) – 161 Northern Wairoa 54 Hole Open Brad Bonnington (Wellsford) led from start to finish to end Christian Nitsche’s 3 year winning streak at Bayleys Beach. Bonnington was looking to push for selection for the Northland men’s side and a win at Northern Wairoa elevated him into the number 5 position for Northland’s match against Wellington. Alex Neely was close behind, once again finishing as runner up in the tournament while Jamie Thomas also impressed finishing in third place.

SECONDARY SCHOOLS GOLF

A bright and Sunny day welcomed players to the Whangarei Golf Club on Monday the 22nd of May for the annual Secondary Schools Golf Competition where schools play in teams to try and qualify for the national secondary schools final. There were a wide range of schools from across Northland in attendance including, Rodney College, Tauraroa Area School, Whangarei Boys High, Kamo High, Kerikeri High, Otamatea High and Bay of Islands College while defending champions Whangarei Girls were unfortunately unable to field a team. To encourage more players, there was a ‘have a go’ section set up to introduce more kids to the game. This section was well populated with 18 players teeing it up to play pairs ambrose around Whangarei Golf Courses front nine. In the competitive side of the competition there were 14 players and a good battle ensued. Kamo High made an appearance after several years out of the competition due to a lack of players, led by single figure handicapper and Northland representative Belinda May. Rodney College also made a resurgence led by Northland junior Tarrin Rous. Whangarei Boy’s High are experiencing a slight lull in current players and struggled to match the pace of the other schools after a very dominant period of secondary school’s golf over recent years. Kerikeri High school only had 2 players in the competitive side of the competition which was unfortunate as both of them posted strong rounds, another positive sign was seeing a lone ranger from Otamatea playing some good golf. 13 year old Jack Hodgson from Paparoa Golf Club was out plying his trade around the par 72 course. Kamo High were the eventual winners of the nett competition which included the best individual round of the day posted by Belinda May (75), the team were delighted with their efforts and proudly took the trophy back to their school to show off. Rodney College were the overall winners of the gross competi-

tion and they were also very happy with their win after struggling to form strong teams over recent years, the win here adds another trophy to the mantelpiece for their number one player Tarrin Rous who has been thriving in competitions of late. Rodney College now have the right to represent the Northland district and schools at the National final later this year.

have had 8 teams compete in this competition and interest remains to be high for further teams to enter. The 18 hole competition has been played in teams of six, each player plays a singles match versus their opponent while also playing a four ball (better ball) format with their club partner concurrently which differs from the format of 36 hole pennants where two rounds are played, a morning four ball followed by afternoon singles. The finalists for this competition for Waipu and BOI Kerikeri, congratulations to Waipu who won the final at Sherwood Park on the 18th of June. 36 Hole Men The 36 Hole competition is almost completed with only the final between the North and South divisions to come on the 1st of july at Waitangi Golf Club, Congratulations to Bay of Islands Kerikeri for winning the North Zone and Mangawhai for taking out the South Zone. The final will be played at Waitangi Golf Club on Saturday the 1st of July. Good luck to both teams.

NORTHLAND MEN V WELLINGTON

(Pictured Below) Wellington, the 2016 interprovincial champions headed north to Mangawhai Golf Course for the weekend of 10th and 11th June to compete in three rounds of matchplay golf against the Northland Mens representative side. The 2017 interprovincial event is being staged at Mangawhai GC in December so competition golf around the course was vital for preparation ahead of the tournament. The teams played three rounds of golf over the weekend starting with foursomes (alternate shot) on Saturday morning, reverse singles on Saturday afternoon and singles on Sunday. The Northland men took an early lead on Saturday morning winning the foursomes round three matches to one with wins to pairings Sheldon Kearns & Scott Wightman, Alex Neely & Taylor Gill and Brad Bonnington & Jamie Thomas. Wellington turned the tides on Saturday afternoon by winning reverse singles five and a half matches to two and a half with the Northland wins going to Scott Wightman and Sheldon Kearns while Taylor Gill played all 18 holes to record a half, leaving the Northland team one point adrift heading into Sundays matches. For the majority of Sunday, Northland held a slender lead before Jonno Cane from Wellington staged a late charge winning his last three holes to defeat Christian Nitsche on the 18th green to record a halved match. Northland’s Kadin Neho, Scott Wightman, Jamie Thomas and Brad Bonnington all notched up wins in the tight battle. Unfortunately for the home side, the four all drawn match left them one point short as Wellington took the weekends honors 10.5 points to 9.5

WAINUI CLAIM CEO TROPHY

The CEO trophy was donated by the four managers of North Harbour, Auckland, Bay of Plenty and Waikato Golf for an annual event when the top pennant sides from each district (in North Harbour this was the 2017 winners of the No-

bilo Pennants – Wainui) compete against each other for district pennant supremacy and bragging rights as to which district has the strongest pennant team. The 2017 tournament was held at Remuera with gross stableford foursomes in the morning and gross stableford singles in the afternoon (each team comprising of 8 players). Wainui scored 360 points over the day to narrowly defeat Titirangi who scored 357. Hamilton were 3rd on 320 and Tauranga finished 4th on 307. Wainui therefore took home yet another trophy in regards to 2017 pennant play and can lay claim to being not only the best team in North Harbour, but also the best in the mid/upper North Island. Well done!

2017 BATTLE OF THE BRIDGE

Held on Sunday 11th of June, there were many very close fought matches at Pakuranga Golf Club in what was an interesting set of results. Auckland wrestled back bragging rights achieving 15 points to North Harbour’s 11. However they ultimately did not take home any more silverware than in 2016 with both the open grade men and masters men halving 5-5 and 4-4 respectively. After winning both trophies in 2016 both were retained by North Harbour for 2017. However with many of the district’s top juniors playing in the open grade sides Auckland showed some great talent and depth in the junior section winning 6-2 to defend that

With a few of North Harbour’s top players away with other commitments it was a chance for others to get their first taste of top level representative golf and all will be stronger for it. Well done to both districts and all the players and a big thank you to Pakuranga Golf Club for presenting a course in superb condition, despite the recent challenges with all the rainfall. The greens were lightening quick and amazing in quality. Till next year when the matches will return to a course in the North Harbour district!

AUCKLAND STROKEPLAY CHAMPS AT REDWOOD PARK

Mike Ellison and Dale Harrison are the strokeplay champions at Redwood Park Golf Club. A score of 85 on the last round, to achieve a total score of 173 on the 36 hole championship, was enough for Dale Harrison to retain her title, which she won last year, and previously in 2012. La-

dies runner up was Ellen Doughney with a total score of 177. Mike Ellison hit a superb last round of 68 to take the men’s championship by 8 strokes from Beau Evans. Mike last won the club championship in 2012, 2010 and 2009 and was delighted that his form, as a member of the club’s winning West Coast Trophy team, continued through to this 72 hole mens championship. GILPIN TRAVEL QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY SHOTGUN START

This new event, introduced by North Shore Golf Club with the incredible support of Keith Sumner from Gilpin Travel, was a huge success on Monday, 5th June. The weather was excellent and a full field enjoyed a great day of golf and camaraderie. Part of the event was to unveil our new, very smart Marshal Cart which was generously purchased by Gilpin Travel to replace our old Blue Cart which finally has given up the ghost. The new cart enables us to take golfers out/off the course and also has the ability to turn into a catering cart, with the back seats opening into a tray.

In the Individual section, Max Bromley (Thames High School) put his best foot forward shooting a 66 nett winning by 6 shots over Robson Tarrant (Matamata College) and Keegan Walsh (Hauraki Plains) who both posted scores of 72 nett. Max will be looking to back it up in the next round on June 30 as the teams head to Matamata Golf Course.

There were 36 out-of-district clubs represented in the Kaimai Classic which included an 11 player contingent from Pirongia, 9 from Taranaki (Fitzroy & Ngamutu), 6 from Waikato, 25 from Auckland clubs. DIVISION 3 STABLEFORD OMANU This is where the action was, but it all came from one player. Pete Morris (pictured - Pirongia) showed his 10 other Pirongia club players and the field how to score. Not content with his 46 in round 1 and showing no mercy to other players, Pete Morris made every post a winning post to score 43 for round 2 – giving a total of 89 points. HARCOURTS MATCHPLAY CHAMPS

The men and Women of Taupo Golf played in the finals of the Harcourts Matchplay Club Championships played last month. Highlight of the day was a hole in one (her first) on the 3rd hole on Centennial by Anne Graham. It was not enough to help her win her match. She was beaten 2&1 by Janine McCauley. It was Janine’s 19th win in the Silver division. The Ladies bronze 1 division was taken out by Jenny Cory over Cheryl Painter. The Ladies bronze 2 was won by Colleen Wade when she beat Fran Fuller. TARANAKI GOLF CLUB MAKES NO CHANGES, SUDDENLY RANKED AMONG NEW ZEALAND’S BEST

SOURCE: DAILY NEWS For 40 years the Waverley Golf Club has had the same 18 holes, and the course has barely been changed. And despite the lack of changes, or renovations since 1972, the course recently was ranked in the Top 50 Golf Courses in New Zealand at number 31. A club life member, Alan Hawken, said he thought the lack of changes was the reason they had entered the ranks so high. Hawken said the men who were looking at the course came and played and were “absolutely astounded” that the course was in its natural state. “Most courses, they have get in bloody great bulldozers and shift everything around to suit what they want, whereas

July 2017

this just got it all naturally and that’s what they liked about it,” he said. “We’ve done very little earth moving.” Club president Brent McAree said this made it one of best golf courses for good golfers. “A lot of average golfers don’t like this course because you’ve got to think about every shot,” McAree said. “But you get good golfers here and they just love it.” Hawken said he had always liked the course because every time you played, it was slightly different. “The wind is a big factor, no two holes are the same, every hole is slightly different to the other one, and when you come and play it tomorrow the wind is in a different quarter,” he said. “It’s like going to a different golf course.” McAree said the club has never done any advertising, so wasn’t known to many, and this seemed to be what the reviewer of the course thought too. The online review said that ‘this unassuming club flies well under the radar – even local Taranaki golfers seem to overlook this rugged gem.’ “It’s unique, you don’t realise what you’ve got,” McAree said. “We’ve always said it, there’s not many courses match this. “ The term ‘rugged’ seemed to refer to the 150 acres of hills, but also what McAree calls the club’s best members – their sheep. The club has about 300 sheep who help with the maintenance on the grounds, and then, help keep the club financially sound. “The income, in a good year, of those is probably equivalent to 150 members,” McAree said. Hawken said the sheep were taken off on tournament days, but are on the course all year round.

WAVERLEY MEN’S PENNANT CHAMPIONS

SOURCE: DAILY NEWS Waverley are the 2017 men’s handicap pennant golf champions after they defeated Manukorihi Two 5-4 in a close final at the Te Ngutu Golf Club back in April The morning semifinals were equally close with Waverley overcoming Inglewood Two 5-4. Manukorihi beat Eltham 5½-3½ with the result not decided until the No 2 and no 3 matches ended on the the 18th hole.

25

Sadly for Eltham, it was their first defeat of the season and their disappointment was obvious. Inglewood had the consolation of picking up third place in the play-off match against Eltham, winning 5-4. The victory for Waverley was the club’s second title in five years and the team of Kerry Rees, Davendra Singh, Nigel Alexander, Rob Amon, Warren Pope and John Boon showed a great deal of determination throughout the season with the pennant event remaining an important event for the South Taranaki team. Their victory continues the recent domination in the men’s pennant competition by teams from the south of the province with the last five heading that way. Played in beautiful conditions throughout the day, and with Te Ngutu’s course in very good condition, the matches were all played in a good spirit and despite the obvious disappointment for the teams that lost, it was good to see players enjoying the occasion. One negative was the pace of play in some of the matches. While it was understandable that players wanted to give a little more thought to their game, matches that went the distance in the morning took nearly five hours to complete. This meant that the afternoon matches did not start until 1.15pm and despite the fact they were played at a much better pace, the final pairs played the 18th hole with little more than 10 minutes of light remaining. *Fifty golfers played at Tumahu’s Multi Sponsored Tournament olayed recently. In the senior division, Pungarehu’s Alan Crowley (76-13-63) was first net with Opunake’s Mark Davis first stableford with 42 points. Tumahu golfer Chris Dombroski (8119-62) was first net in the intermediate division with fellow Tumahu member Peter Smyth first stableford winner with 41 points. In the juniors, Paul Sousa (86-22-64) from Pungarehu won the net with Denis Gilbert-Tumahu the stableford with 40 points. Sharon Fisher (99-32-67) was the best net in the ladies division with Opunake’s Jo Cathie first stableford with 35 points. *Moorhead (67-69-70-71-277) finished on three under par in a tie for 25th spot at the Carrus Open in Tauranga, while

G

o Golfing, Australia’s biggest organiser of tournaments and hosted golf tours and holidays for golfers has inked a two-year deal with Callaway Golf that is sure to please club golfers. Go Golfing hosts 7 major tournaments each year for club golfers and the Callaway deal will see $200,000 worth of Callaway drivers, wedges, putters, golf balls and merchandise added to the already impressive prize offerings at these events. From 2018, Callaway will be the title sponsor for Go Golfing’s Barnbougle Golf Challenge. Featuring two rounds at both the Dunes and Lost Farm courses, the 2018 event runs 13-19 January. Limited to just 100 players, this event sells out every year. Go Golfing’s founder Peter McCarthy is pleased with the Callaway deal. “Golfers want to win the best

and latest release golf product that will take their game to new heights and our deal with Callaway guarantees we can give them that. It’s no surprise big time players like Phil Mickelson, Henrik Stenson and Jim Furyk have been career players with Callaway equipment and now players in Go Golfing tournaments will be winning the custom-fitted Callaway equipment.” Callaway Golf South Pacific’s General Manager, Matt Meredith, sees the Go Golfing partnership as a great way to engage with club golfers. “ We see this partnership as the perfect opportunity to reach out to golfers of all levels, both club members and social players.” More than 3 decades ago, Ely Callaway, Callaway’s founder, set out to build a company that would bring

more enjoyment to golfers of all skill levels. Callaway Golf is now a global company, doing business in 107 countries and 29 languages. Through an unwavering commitment to product innovation, Callaway Golf creates products and services designed to make every golfer a better golfer. In addition to their large tournaments, Go Golfing is well known for taking golfers on hosted tours to 28 countries each year and increasingly popular golf cruises. “At Go Golfing we bring everyday club golfers together for the best time of their life. Now, if you’re a winner at one of our tournaments or tour events, you will proudly pop the latest release Callaway equipment into your golf bag. Our partnership with Callaway is a great deal for golfers.”

DRUMMOND GOLF SECURES NAMING RIGHTS FOR TWO GO GOLFING TOURNAMENTS

A

partnership deal has been signed between Go Golfing and Drummond Golf that will see the Drummond Golf name at the forefront of two of Go Golfing's longest running tournaments for club golfers. Known for 16 years as the Wrest Point Masters in Hobart, this annual weeklong event in January for golfers over 35 will become the Drummond Golf World Masters from 2018 onward. The popular tournament includes 4 rounds of competition between the Royal Hobart and Tasmania golf clubs. Wrest Point Hotel and Casino will remain the host hotel and venue for the nightly social and entertainment events to ensure the Drummond Golf World Masters continues as a much-loved event for club golfers.

Drummond Golf will also be the title sponsor of the Sanctuary Cove 4 Ball Challenge on the Gold Coast each July. The partnership with Drummond Golf will see more than $100,000 in Drummond Golf gift cards awarded at Go Golfing events. On the back of Go Golfing's recent deal with Callaway to provide $200,000 in latest release golf equipment, the addition of $100,000 in Drummond Golf gift cards guarantees the biggest bounty of prizes offered at Go Golfing tournaments. Golfers will again be the big winners from this deal with Drummond Golf. Peter McCarthy, Go Golfing's Managing Director says, "Golfers travel all over the world on Go Golfing hosted tours and tournaments. The Drummond Golf gift

card prizes are much more convenient to carry home than traditional prizes and, better still, golfers can choose from Drummond's entire range in-store and online." Ravi Abeyaratne, Drummond Golf's Marketing Director is delighted Drummond Golf is taking an active role in supporting amateur golf competition, "Drummond Golf is pleased to be headlining two of Australia's much-enjoyed tournaments for everyday golfers. Over the years Go Golfing has forged a reputation for running the best golf tournaments. Drummond Golf is committed to growing the game and supporting amateur golf tournaments. Everybody benefits: the golfers, Go Golfing and Drummond Golf." Drummond Golf is Australia’s biggest

golf retailer with 50 stores nationwide. Drummond Golf is a franchised business. All stores are owner operated and this guarantees quality service, expert knowledge and low pricing. On top of carrying all the leading brands in golf, Drummond Golf is also recognised for their expertise in fitting with the world first MiMatch fitting system. The partnership will also be a boon for cancer research. In 2012 Drummond Golf launched Golf Fore A Cause to raise funds for Breast and Prostate Cancer Foundations. Go Golfing's Australian events will fundraise for Golf Fore A Cause. With raffle prizes to include golf holidays to luxury golf resorts worldwide, there's plenty of incentive for golfers to get behind this initiative.

THE RETURN OF AN ICON…WITH MODERN POWER -Introducing new Callaway Steelhead XR Fairway Woods-

C

allaway, the #1 selling wood brand in the U.S., today launches the Steelhead XR Fairway Woods, a modern and powerful interpretation of the iconic shape that made the original Steelhead one of the best-selling fairway woods of all-time. Engineered with a modern Hawkeye Sole - re-contoured to increase versatility and smooth turf interaction to promote a clean, square contact from every type of lie - Steelhead XR features a steel face, a 6-gram J-36 carbon crown (20g lighter than the previous XR Fairway crowns), and a low and forward CG, promoting easy launch and low spin, like the original model. Steelhead XR features Callaway’s industry-leading next-generation Hyper Speed Face Cup technology; incorporating an extremely thin and flexible boundary area, it encourages fast ball speed across a larger area of the face for long distance, even on mishits. Callaway’s proven Speed Step Technology, developed from a unique collaboration with aerospace experts, also improves the head’s aerodynam-

ics to promote faster head speed for more distance. Dr Alan Hocknell, Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Callaway, said: “Callaway has improved what was already an iconic shape, made the head more forgiving and easy to launch, and refined the sole to make it even more versatile and playable than the original Steelhead Fairway. “What’s more, we coupled it with our latest ball speed technology innovations to promote more distance, both

off the turf and from the tee.” A wide variety of lofts are available, including: 3+wood (13.5), 3-wood (15), 4+wood (16), 5-wood (18), 7-wood (21), 9-wood (24) and Heavenwood (20.5). Women’s Steelhead XR Fairways are available in 3, 5, 7, 9 and Heavenwood models.

I was invited to go to New Caledonia almost a year ago to look at this new golf resort, one thing lead to another and I eventually got to make the trip a couple of months ago. I wish I had of gone earlier. What a surprise! beautiful 18-hole Dye designed championship golf course, fantastic spa and a remarkable hotel. After meeting with the president of the hotel company that owns the Resort plus the 5 star Meridien Hotels in Noumea and Isle of Pines, I said you need to tell everyone about this great golf course and resort”. I suggested one good way to do this is put on a big pro-am tournament, bring in some top professional’s, overseas amateurs plus some local players, he agreed and now the South Pacific Golf Classic is happening. The event will be like “the best of
