One of those crazy moments in golf H

By Paul Gueorgieff Editor, Golfer Pacific NZ

ave you ever been involved in a playoff to determine a winner? The answer will be yes for many of us. After 18 holes you and your opposition are all tied up and it’s off to the first tee again to find a winner. Often the winner will be found on the very first extra hole but there will be times when the game continues to the second extra hole. Occasionally the game may remain square after two holes and a third extra hole is required. But it would be rare for any game to go much further than that. Yes, I am sure some of you may be aware of stories where a game may have gone to four extra holes, maybe five, and possibly six. But that would be an extremely rare event. But what I am leading up to is something almost unbelievable. And it didn’t happen in some obscure club event. This was in the United States Women’s Amateur Championship in California last month. This is probably the world’s top event for women amateur golfers. I was following this event because New Zealand’s Julianne Alvarez was

playing. You’ll remember Julianne. She won two New Zealand Amateurs and a New Zealand Strokeplay and is now in the United States on a golf scholarship with the University of Washington. Julianne started the US Amateur in great style. After two rounds of strokeplay she was the second-top qualifier and with her great record in matchplay hopes for her were high. But in the first round of matchplay Julianne was comprehensively beaten 5 and 4. Julianne’s tournament was over. I subsequently discovered that her opponent was aged just 13. I was astounded someone so young could easily sweep aside someone like Julianne, even if she had a bad day. Her conqueror was Chia Yen Wu from Chinese Taipei, more commonly known as Taiwan. My interest in her had been ignited and I decided to follow her fortunes in the tournament. In the next round of competition, the last 32 players, Wu had to go to the 19th before winning. As I said earlier, it usually only takes one extra hole to find a winner. In the next round, of 16 players, Wu won 3 and 1 to make the quarter-finals.

Her quarter-final opponent was Lauren Stephenson from South Carolina. Lauren had only two months earlier made the cut in the US Women’s Open, finishing 41st. But after 18 holes Wu and Stephenson were all square. It was off to the first tee to find a winner. The first extra hole was halved and it was off to the second extra hole. The second extra hole was halved and it was off to the third extra hole. The third extra hole was halved and it was off to the fourth extra hole. The fourth extra hole was halved and it was off to fifth extra hole. I’ll cut to the chase at this point. This match went to an amazing 12 extra holes. If there had not been a result after the 12th extra hole the game would have been held over to the following day, because of fading light. A total of 30 holes had been played. It was the longest in the history of the United States Golf Association. The previous record had been 28 holes and for women it had been 27 holes. This was an extraordinary playoff. Stephenson had ample opportunities to close out the match but her putts kept sliding by. On the 26th hole, Stephenson put her approach shot to about three

feet from the hole while Wu was on the edge of the green and about 70 feet away from the hole. It looked like Stephenson would finally bring the match to a close. But no. Wu holed her 70-footer to the amazement of the crowd, Stephenson got her three-footer and the matched marched on. Caddying for Wu was Scott Patel who had been the 2015 club champion at the San Diego Country Club where the tournament was being played. Patel said his advice to Wu for the 70-footer was simple. “I’ve played here so much. I told her, ‘Hey, it’s just a straight putt. There’s nothing to it. You have to make it’ “ Patel said. Stephenson was amongst those to applaud Wu’s 70-footer and afterwards said: “That putt – I mean, that’s going to be on TV and you’re going to see it forever. That was crazy.’’ Crazy indeed. Wu was beaten in her semi-final match, two down, by Sophia Schubert from the United States. Schubert went on to win the final. British Open leaders confirmed for New Zealand Open T hree of the top six finishers from the British Women’s Open, led by runner-up Jodi Ewart Shadoff, have confirmed their places in the New Zealand Women’s Open. The $NZ1.85 million event will be staged at the new Windross Farm golf course that will host the first LPGA tournament in New Zealand from September 28-October 1. Ewart Shadoff boasted a course record-equalling 64 in the final round at the famed Kingsbarns links course in Scotland to get within two shots of the winner, In-Kyung Kim. Ewart Shadoff, from England, will be joined by two others who finished in the top six finishers, comprising Caroline Masson (France) who tied for third and American-based Korean Jenny Shin, who was sixth. New Zealand Open tournament director Michael Goldstein said: “Many golf fans in this end of the world may not know these names, but it is indicative of the standard of golfers that will be playing in New Zealand. “The British Open is one of the five majors and this trio of players produced some stunning golf to finish so close to the winner. The three of them were collectively 18 under par

for the last 18 holes alone which is quite remarkable. “It shows the quality of golfers coming to the McKayson New Zealand Open, even if they are not household names among golfers in this country.” Ewart Shadoff, 29, won five collegiate titles on a golf scholarship to the University of New Mexico before turning professional in 2010. She has 18 top-10 finishes on both the LPGA and Ladies European Tour (LET) and sits in the top-30 ranked world players, earning nearly $NZ4 million in prizemoney in the process. Masson (Germany), has enjoyed two professional victories on the LPGA and the LET, including a record 16-under par win at the Manulife LPGA Classic last year, and has earned around $NZ4 million in just four years as a professional. Shin, 24, moved to USA at nine years of age, winning the US Girls Junior title before turning professional as a teenager. She won her first LPGA last year at the Volunteers of America Texas and is one of the most consistent players on tour, missing just 15 cuts in 135 LPGA tournaments since turning pro on her way to earning more than $NZ Jodi Ewart Shadoff of Eangland. Top NZ amateur returning from the US for Windross Farm By Paul Gueorgieff Golfer Pacific editor

J

ulianne Alvarez is returning from the United States to play in the New Zealand Women’s Open. The top New Zealand amateur has been based in the US for the last two years on a golf scholarship at the University of Washington. Last year she became part of the university’s history. She played a pivotal role when the university’s women’s golf team won, for the first time, the National Collegiate Athletic Assocation (NCAA) championship, the most prized trophy in American university golf. Alvarez, who has won two New Zealand Amateurs and a New Zealand Strokeplay, was due to arrive back in the country on September 14 and will return to Seattle in Washington after the New Zealand Open to continue her education at the university. Alvarez said she will spend a total of four years at the University of Washington and is enjoying every moment. ``I’ve been at Washington for two years now and I love it,’’ Alvarez told Golfer Pacific. ``The course and competition we play week in and week out, as well as the resources and facilities we have access to, are world class. ``The people that I get to hang out with every day, my teammates, make

4

the whole experience that much more enjoyable.’’ Alvarez will return to New Zealand on the back of experiencing the highs and lows of golf in the probably the world’s top women’s amateur golf tournament. That was the US Women’s Amateur in which last month she was the second-top qualifier after two rounds of strokeplay and hopes would have been high for the matchplay section of the event. But in her first round match she was comprehensively beaten 5 and 4 by the 63rd top qualifier, a 13-year-old from Taiwan. ``I was pretty disappointed, it’s not what you want, especially after seeding second in the qualifying rounds,’’ she said. ``But at that stage of the competition everyone has the game to beat anyone. It was awesome being able to compete at that level and I learned a lot from that loss that will make me a greater player in the future.’' Alvarez played in the New Zealand Opens of 2014 and 2015 as a teenager and missed the cut each time. This year’s open at Windross Farm golf course in south Auckland has for the first time become part of the world’s richest golf circuit, the LPGA Tour. It carries prizemoney of $US1.3 million and many of the world’s top players will be competing, including our own Lydia Ko.

It will be a tall order for Alvarez but she said there was no reason why her goal was to win. ``Whenever you play a tournament, you want to win,’’ she said. ``I feel as though over the last year my game has really matured and I intend to be really competitive during this event. ``I am also looking to gain more experience, we’re really fortunate now that the New Zealand Women’s Open has become an LPGA event so I am looking forward to how the event differs from other professional events that I have played.’’ Alvarez follows the fortunes of Ko in the US closely, having previously played against her in New Zealand many times and being a teammate of hers when representing the country in events like the Espirito Santo Trophy. She said the pressure to perform must be immense for Ko. ``She has been struggling in recent times. There has been a lot of pressure on her to perform. I guess being as good as she is and perhaps that pressure may be getting to her a little but regardless, she’s an extremely talented player and I’m sure she’ll figure it out.’' Alvarez said she plans to join Ko on the professional golf circuit eventually. ``Yes the plan is to turn professional Julianne Alvarez. Rolex and golf go together like clockwork GOLF NEWS

T

urn back the clock, or maybe the watch, 50 years to 1967 and the world was a very different place. A pioneering prototype of the Concorde supersonic aircraft was unveiled in France and Christiaan Barnard performed the first heart transplant in South Africa. The year also marked the beginning of a significant new relationship between the Swiss watch brand Rolex, and the sport of golf. Sports sponsorship is often a fickle relationship but in the case of Rolex and golf it has been a half-century of steadfast commitment and instrumental support. In the 1960s, professional golf was experiencing a renaissance courtesy of an American whose domination of the sport, coupled with his disarming charisma and charm, would change the game for generations to come. His name was Arnold Palmer who was to become one of the world’s greatest and best loved golfers, with a playing career that spanned 30 years at the very top of the game. Palmer won seven of the sport’s major championships and more than 90 professional wins. He was a pioneer and a golfing futurist. His talent for marketing helped strengthen and promote the game across the globe. He became the first golfing superstar of the television age and is considered to be largely responsible for the prosperity of the modern game. At the same time that Palmer was at the pinnacle of his career, Rolex was keen to strengthen its association with the game. Naturally, Palmer was the perfect fit to become the brand’s first “testimonee” in golf and so began an enduring partnership that has developed into one that spans the globe and extends to golfers of all ages and abilities. “It’s been one of the best and most compatible relationships that I have had in my life,’' Palmer once said of his abiding partnership with Rolex. “There’s far more to the relationship than I could ever tell you. Rolex has done so many great things over the years that have been of tangible benefit to golf as a sport.’'

A familiar sight at many of the world’s top golf tournaments.

The bond between Rolex and golf has evolved through pivotal parnerships that have cemented Rolex’s place at the heart of the game. In the 1970s and 1980s, Rolex added prestigious tournaments The Open and the US Open; guardians of the traditions and rules of the game The Royal and Ancient (R&A) and USGA; as well as the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA), to its growing number of golf partners. Rolex’s relationship with golf was described best by one of the most influential men in the sport, Peter Dawson. Now president of the International Golf Federation, it was during his tenure as chief executive of The R&A when he said: “Through its historic and unwavering support, Rolex has become part of the fabric

of golf, from supporting the amateur game to increasing awareness of the rules, through an association with golf’s original major to presenting the Senior Open. “No other brand I can think of is more globally and passionately involved in our sport. The far-reaching commitment of Rolex is deeply rooted in promoting and developing the game world-wide, from grassroots programmes through to major championships and elite players.’’ Rolex is also deeply committed to amateur golf, and is a partner of important amateur tournaments across the globe, including the British Amateur Championship, US Amateur Championship, Latin America Amateur Championship, Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship, as well as the leading amateur team formats, the Walker Cup and Curtis Cup.

A chance to play with Royal Auckland to host final qualifying event A Lydia at open’s pro-am

O

ne lucky fan will get a-once-ina-lifetime chance to play with tournament host Lydia Ko at the New Zealand Women’s Open. If you are Sky Television subscriber and over 18 years of age, then you can enter the competition and go into the draw. The winner will play with Ko at the open’s pro-am on Wednesday, September 27. The winner will also receive a pass for themselves and a friend to be hospitality guests at the “LOVE Golf Lounge” for all four days of the tournament as well as an official tournament shirt and cap. The prize has been made possible courtesy of major sponsors Infiniti, the official vehicle supplier, and Qatar Air-

ways. New Zealand Women’s Open tournament director Michael Goldstein said that the event wanted to reach out to all golfers and sports fans in New Zealand with the “play with Lydia campaign'' offering a unique opportunity. “Normally this type of opportunity would be limited to major sponsors or high net worth individuals. However we are delighted to offer this incredible opportunity to play with Lydia to golf fans across the country,” Goldstein said. Sky subscribers only need to go to the website of www.playwithlydia.com, answer a simple question and go into the draw.

final chance to make the field for the New Zealand Women’s Open will be held at Royal Auckland Golf Club on September 25. The final qualifying event will be open to professional golfers and amateurs with a handicap of three or less. The top three players will make it into the field for the open which starts three days later on Thursday, September 28. The field for the LPGA’s first venture to New Zealand will comprise 90 players from the LPGA, 15 from the Australian Ladies Professional Golf as well as a number from New Zealand Golf and tournament invitations. Tournament director Michael Goldstein said: ``This is our national open and, as such, it’s an important part of our ethos that there is a qualifying opportunity for aspiring women golfers. This final qualifying is a chance for players from either New Zealand or overseas to play in an LPGA tournament.

September 2017

“To make the field provides a rare chance to experience playing against some of the best in the world, and who knows, it may end up being a life-changing experience if they play well.” New Zealand Golf also believes it will offer additional chances for up-andcoming amateurs. “The McKayson New Zealand Women’s Open is an incredible occasion to showcase this country and our golf courses to the world,” said New Zealand Golf general manager Dave Mangan. “It also offers an amazing opportunity for our young players. The best of them will earn invitations to play and the final qualifying event is a unique chance for amateurs to gain entry to an LPGA event in their own country.” The final qualifying event will operate a two-tee start from 8am, with playoffs in the case of any ties either for the Open directly or for alternate spots.

Six of the best confirmed for NZ Women’s Open GOLF NEWS

S

ix golfing stars, with 11 major championship titles between them, have confirmed their starts in the New Zealand Women’s Open in Auckland. They are Yani Tseng (from Taiwan), Catriona Matthew (Scotland), Brittany Lincicome (USA) and Na Yeon Choi, Eun-Hee Ji and Hyo Joo Kim (South Korea). The open, sponsored by McKayson, is to be staged at Windross Farm Golf Course in Ardmore, south of Auckland from September 28-October 1. The super six have won 70 professional tournaments between them and earned more than $63 million in prizemoney to date in their illustrious careers. Collectively they have amassed 352 top-10 finishes between them on the LPGA Tour alone, an average of nearly 60 tournaments each. The open’s tournament director Michael Goldstein said: “To have golfers who have won so many major championships between them is a testament to the quality of the field coming to New Zealand. “Of course Lydia Ko and Brooke Henderson, who have already confirmed their entry, add to this list of major championship winners who will play and we are hoping for one or two more. “They are proven champions in the women’s game, and it will be a privilege for New Zealand fans to watch these players of this calibre in action. It is a level of golf that has never been seen in this country before.” Tseng was the youngest player either male or female, at 22 years, to win five majors and held the number one world ranking for 109 weeks, second only to Lorena Ochoa. In that time she has won the US Women’s PGA Championship twice, the Women’s British Open twice and the ANA Inspiration. Matthew, who splits her time between USA and Europe, has 11 tournament wins to her credit including the British Open in 2010 and four wins on

the LPGA Tour. She has amassed more than $13 million in her career off the back of more than 100 top-10 finishes on the LPGA Tour alone. Matthew has played in seven Solheim Cup competitions, played once every two years between USA and Europe, and was the vice-captain of the Europe team for last month’s contest in the United States. She is excited about playing in New Zealand. “It is one of the few places in the world that I’ve not been and always wanted to go to New Zealand so I am really looking forward to going down,’’ Matthew said. ``People say it is similar to Scotland so that is something I am keenly interested in.’’ Kim, 22, is one of the most exciting young players on tour, winning the Evian Championship in France as a teen-

ager three years ago on the back of an LPGA Tour record 61 in her opening round. She has won three times on the LPGA Tour and 15 times as a professional around the world. Lincicome, 31, is a two time major winner and likely to be one of the most popular players at the tournament, on the back of her big hitting game, which has earned her the nickname of BamBam. She won the Kraft Nabisco Championship in 2009 before it morphed into the ANA Inspiration which she won in 2015. Along the way she has won seven times on the LPGA Tour including the opening event this year in the Bahamas. Choi is another player with a remarkable record in the game, with her nine LPGA Tour wins including the US Women’s Open in 2012 and winning the Vare Trophy twice as leading money winner on the Tour.

US PGA Championship moving to May from 2019

NEWS

T

he United States PGA Championship, won last month by Justin Thomas, will be held in the month of May from 2019. The change is one of two important alterations to the golfing calendar in 2019. The other is that The Players’ Championship, regarded as the fifth of golf’s four major tournaments, will move from May to March. One of the reasons for the change of the PGA Championship is the re-introduction of golf to the Olympics Games, said Pete Bevacqua, chief executive of the PGA of America. ``Our analysis (of the tournament calendar) began in 2013 and included an extensive list of factors, including having to shift the date every four years

to accommodate the Olympic Games,’’ Bevacqua said. The golfing calendar of today was also very different to the 1970s when the US PGA Championship was established for August, Bevacqua added. ``The golf calendar is dramatically different, especially in the latter portions of the schedule, than it was in the 1970s when our PGA Championship took up residence in August. “We are excited about this move to May. It provides our PGA Championship a strong landing spot on the calendar and a consistent major championship rhythm that golf fans can embrace. For nearly 85 per cent of our membership, May is also on the front-end of the golf season.’’

The tournament has been the last of golf’s four majors but from 2019 it will become the second. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said: “We are thrilled to announce these significant changes, which will greatly enhance the professional golf calendar starting in 2019. “Our thanks to the PGA of America for its partnership in what will allow both organisations to meet our short and longterm objectives, while delivering incredibly compelling golf to our fans around the world. “The calendar for the PGA Tour season is among the most important and challenging aspects of our business, and the changes we’re unveiling give significant flexibility to create

a schedule including the FedEx Cup playoffs that is in the best interests of players, fans, tournaments, communities and our partners, from start to finish. “The Players Championship has grown in stature since we moved to May in 2007 and, regardless of the date, is clearly one of the premier events in all of golf – the best players in the world, a premier venue in The Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, an unmatched fan experience and a significant charitable component that benefits the Jacksonville-area community. “The Players moving to March in 2019 will enhance an already strong Florida portion of our calendar and play a significant role in an overall improved sched-

ule.” From May 16-19, 2019, Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York, will host the 101st PGA Championship, which will be the first conducted in May since Sam Snead’s triumph in 1949. A total of four PGA Championships have been held in May. Ben Hogan claimed the second of his two PGA Championship victories in May of 1948. Denny Shute also hoisted the Wanamaker Trophy in May 1937, as did Snead for the first time in May 1942. Since its inception in 1916, the PGA Championship has been played in nine different months. It has been the final major championship of the year from 1959-70, and from 1972 through 2017.

Paving the way for amalgamation between NZ Golf and PGA By Dean Murphy New Zealand Golf Chief Executive

A

s many readers will no doubt be aware, over the past six years, New Zealand Golf (NZG) and the PGA of New Zealand (PGA) have been working closely together to assess the best structure to govern and administer the future growth and development of golf in New Zealand. Considering the future strategic context of golf in New Zealand, NZG and the PGA feel there are many critical issues facing the game and believe it is in the best interests of the game that they join together to address these issues and lead the game forward to a dynamic and successful future. NZG and the PGA believe there is significant strength in togetherness and a united approach is the best way to meet the current and future challenges facing the game. After careful consideration over a number of years and thorough due diligence, the boards of NZG and the PGA have

agreed to pursue formal amalgamation in order to create a singularly focused leadership body for the sport encompassing each of their existing functions. A conditional amalgamation agreement has been signed by the two organisations to cover the process by which amalgamation could occur. If all conditions are met (including a formal membership vote), the organisations will amalgamate and be operative from January 1 of next year. If this was to occur it would be a first in the golfing world. By way of background for those who may not be familiar with the organisations, NZG was established in 1910 as the governing body for golf in New Zealand, responsible for fostering, developing and promoting all aspects of the game. NZG has 15 district association members, 390 affiliated golf clubs, more than 105,000 affiliated club members and more than 86,000 registered casual players. As at July 1 of this year, NZG has an approximate annual turnover of $5.5 million and 18 full time equivalent employees.

The PGA is a members’ association founded by 12 golf professionals in 1913. Today the PGA has 540 members who are involved in providing professional services relating to golf, including professional tour players, golf retailers, club and driving range teachers and coaches, tourism operators and golf club managers. As at July 1, the PGA has an approximate annual turnover of $1.5 million and the equivalent of 3-1/2 full time employees. NZG and PGA currently share office space in Auckland. The principal overarching objective of the proposed amalgamation is to create a single leadership body for golf in New Zealand that encompasses all functions of NZG and the PGA and provide the permanency required to successfully address the challenges and opportunities facing the game. In achieving the foregoing, there are a number of secondary objectives including achieving clarity of purpose, strategy and vision; achieving a clear leadership

voice for the game; realising operational synergies and efficiencies; creating seamless development pathways and processes; and coordinating the promotion and development of the game. While a formal vote on this matter will not take place until late November, there is currently a great deal of discussion and consultation being undertaken with each membership body. Ultimately there are a number of conditions to be met; the most important being that the membership of each existing body votes for and formally approves the amalgamation. Each organisation has a very long and proud history and we certainly won’t be moving forward unless each membership base believes it is the right thing to do. This has been a very long and very complex project. However, I personally remain as committed as when we embarked on this mission six years ago. We are leading the world in our thinking and I am certain the proposed amalgamation will deliver better outcomes for the game of golf.

Where is golf going? By Andrew Whiley A voice from the south

ecently the Dunedin City Council adopted its new sport and recreation strategy for the next 10 years. Some of the key goals identified were to create more affordable and accessible opportunities to be active, to have an environment where we have more active children and young people plus more active older people, while increasing awareness of opportunities and places to be active. The data that was presented from the Sport New Zealand active New Zealand survey 2015, which showed that 75 percent of Otago adults took part in sport on any given week, 44,000 adults volunteered in sport and recreation and 60 percent of adults were interested in either trying a new sport or activity or doing more of an existing one. I was surprised to see that almost all participants (97 percent) took part in their chosen sports or activities casually, either on their own or with others, followed by 21 percent that took part in regular club

competitions. The most common way people paid to participate was on a per visit entry or hire basis (43 percent) with an understanding this is how people arrive at their local swimming pool. It was also an interesting statistic to see that more than five out of 10 participants (54 percent) had received coaching and almost four out of 10 (36 percent) had used instructional resources in the previous 12 months to help improve their performance. But more importantly, the main reasons for taking part in activities was enjoyment (89 percent) and fitness and health (88 percent). A lack of time was by far the number one reason interested participants gave as a reason for not doing more sport and recreation activities, whether it be trying a new activity (53 percent), or doing more of an existing activity (63 percent). Cost was the next barrier at 23 percent. It becomes even more interesting when we then factor in New Zealand population demographics where 15 percent of the population is aged 65 years or older. By 2050, this is projected to be 25

percent. There is projected to be at least 60 percent more elderly than children by 2050 as well. Now how does this relate to your golf club? When more than 80 percent of all golf clubs in New Zealand are struggling financially, looking at the information you have already read, there is a theme. How will the majority of golf clubs meet the challenges facing them in the next two decades so that they are still in existence in 2050? Golf is a popular sport yet time to play, cost and opportunity to play casually are factors that will have major impacts on what many participants are looking for. My advice to any golf club this summer is to get ahead of the game and start marketing your facility as a place to enjoy and learn golf. My top three tips are: • Obtain funding, or use club funds, to provide free learn-to-golf programmes with PGA professionals to introduce new players to the game (especially women, junior and senior golfers). Once you get these new players regularly coming through the gate to practice and learn

September 2017

the game, there is a greater chance they will play their golf with your club. • Accept that nine-hole golf is going to grow and will be more popular for all golfers, especially those aged over 70 and new to the game. Having nine-hole options or forward tees, for a shorter more forgiving course, will be popular. • Explore casual payment options to facilitate a more “user pay” system; so if you normally have a $30 green fee, have an option where if you play after 5pm you may only pay $10 for nine-holes thus creating increased revenue in slower times and again, getting more golfers coming through the gate. Golf has a bright future only if we take the time to understand the market place, adapt to what is needed and learn from the brightest minds. By engaging with New Zealand Golf and the local provincial sporting organisations, it is vital that all golf clubs understand what the demographic and research says for their regions in order to start addressing tomorrow’s problems today.

he PGA of America would have been thrilled with the recent staging of the 99th US PGA Championship at Quail Hollow in North Carolina. Sometimes considered to be the least important of the four major championships, the 2017 PGA Championship certainly belied that status with the strongest field and toughest course for any of this year’s majors, to say nothing of the $US10.5 million in prizemoney. The fans supported this with record ticket, merchandise and corporate hospitality sales for a PGA Championship. However, the real icing on the cake was a winner who epitomised the values and aspirations of the 40,000 qualified PGA professionals around the world, and their expertise in growing the game and business of golf. Justin Thomas is the son of Mike Thomas, who has been the club professional at Memory Landing Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky (think of Mohammed Ali) for the last 27 years. Included in that time was a stint on the PGA of America executive board from 2007 to 2010. Mike witnessed his son’s triumph in person, but Justin’s first phone call after the prizegiving was to his 85-year-

Keeping it in the family old grandfather Paul, a PGA life member who was formerly also a club professional at the Zanesville Country Club in Ohio. Paul qualified as a PGA member in 1956 and was a handy player in his time, competing in the 1962 US Open at Oakmont, where Jack Nicklaus burst onto the scene with his first US Open title. Together with father Mike, Paul clearly had a huge influence on his grandson’s interest in golf — Justin had a club in his hands at age two, and was already talking about winning a major championship at the age of five – and his subsequent development. Paul’s response to Justin’s phone call was to say: “This is just the first of many”, and given the level of support and golfing expertise in the Thomas family, who could argue with him? Golfing families go right back to the foundation of professional golf, with Tom Morris and his son Tommy junior. Arnold Palmer was also the son of a PGA club professional, and in New Zealand we have the

likes of Ernie and Kim Southerden, Sid and Bob McDonald, Brian and Anthony Doyle, and Alistair and Craig Palmer to name but a few. The “daddy of them all” may well have been Alex Murray, who won four NZ PGA titles. His father was a PGA professional, as were eleven of his uncles, making golf a true family business for the Murrays. While Justin Thomas may have had the best golfing pedigree in the 2017 US PGA Championship field, all of the other 155 players in the field would have had links to a supportive family, and a background of encouragement and development with at least one PGA professional in the mix. It used to be said that you had to wait until your thirties to have the experience and maturity to win a major championship. Sergio Garcia and Henrik Stenson would no doubt endorse that. The current pattern though seems to be different, with the likes of Thomas, Jordan Spieth and Brooks Koepka all bucking the trend in 2017. Start young, and go for it, is

the message. The women’s game has moved even more in favour of the young, with no better example than our own Lydia Ko and her cohorts on the LPGA Tour. Most of us are not expert golf coaches, but we can play our part by encouraging our family members to get into golf at a young age, lining them up with a PGA professional to get the basics sorted out, and then – as Paul and Mike Thomas did with Justin – playing with them as much as possible. At least until they start beating us. Given the pressure on families these days, perhaps this is a role for grandparents as much as parents. Many golf clubs have father and son/daughter competitions, but it may be more relevant to broaden these out to families in general, or grandparent/grandchildren events. Who knows, it might be just the trigger that produces the next Lydia Ko or Justin Thomas.

Go f4Me

If you are finding it hard to justify the cost of an annual golf membership, Go f4Me is the answer. Paying expensive fees each year can be a burden and you need to play many games to get value for money. Warkworth Golf Club has made it easy to play when you want and guaranteed value for money with our Go f4Me membership. It’s planned to fit in within your budget and your lifestyle.

How It Works

The Go f4Me card is like a golf debit card. To get going, load it up with an easy $250, and then you top it up as and when required from as little as $10. It’s fully value for money because your credit has no use by or expiry date. Once you receive your card you can use it to pay for substantially reduced rounds of golf saving you $$$ on the regular unaffiliated rate, purchase items in the Divot golf shop and food and beverages in the club rooms.

Do You Have a Competitive Streak? Then why not become an NZ Golf Affiliated member. You will receive near full playing rights and the ability to join in competitions, not just at Warkworth but all of New Zealand. Imagine playing the Christmas Cheer event at Hikurangi, one of those must play events. The NZ Affiliated fee is just $60 per year and of course you can pay it with your Go f4Me card from your $250 start up fee. This is a golf membership targeted for today’s busy people with limited time and tight budgets, it means you CAN have it all and you CAN have it now.

Have you ever shopped online for golf items?

By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional

A

while ago I decided to create my own online website for our golf shop (www.100percentgolf.com). So with some help from my local web developer I set up a site and went about loading up products and information with little knowledge about what to do. It was on the internet but was under performing so I took a step back to assess if I am wasting my time. So I asked myself if golf is heading down the same path as clothing stores for example where sales can make up 30% of turnover through online sales. Some are only doing online sales these days so do golfers shop online and do golf shops needs websites?

I believe currently the number of online sales is small compared to other countries in regards to golf gear but it will grow. NZ is a little behind in regards to this but it may also be that we have less golfers playing generally. Golf clubs have dropped in membership by 2.5% on average for the last 4-5 years but casual golfers seem to have increased so perhaps we still have the players but the landscape is changing. I’m not an expert but I would say that in 5-10 years if a pro-shop does not have a good online sales element they will lose income to those that do. We already have some sites in NZ that I know are spending thousands on ads and promoting their website. I also know some are not doing that well in regards to online sales

but see it more as a way to show of what they sell. I have been working like a slave on re-developing my site with hope it will pay back the enormous amount of hours I have spent on it. Larger companies pay someone to load and create pages but when you are a small business you have to do it yourself. I must admit, it’s looking good but will it be a winner. Jump on their one day as I have added lots of FREE aspects as well such as golf tips and advice so that you can not only purchase products but also learn and help your golf. I think this is a key as the online experience should not just be about buying products but giving something in return. Giving back I guess which feels good that I can help others by sharing my knowl-

edge. I don’t care about jumping in front of a camera and talking or demonstrating something so expect to see more videos from me as well. The online element interests me in regards to where it will head. Recreation makes up only a small percentage of online sales in NZ (5%) which may be why we don’t see more good sites in New Zealand selling golf gear. Or do people not buy online because the online stores are average? Certainly I will give the online sales a very good go and if I can help people along the way I will be happy. If I never do it I will never know. Please jump online and make a trip to www.100percentgolf.com , contact me or sign up as I would love to hear from you.

VOKEY ENTERS CANADIAN HALL OF FAME

L

egendary golf club maker Bob Vokey has been inducted into the Canadian Golf hall of fame in a ceremony held at the Glen Abbey Golf Club, home of this year’s Canadian Open. Born in Montreal and raised in Quebec, Vokey has become one of the world’s foremost wedge designers and a trusted short game advisor to many of the game’s greatest golfers. His innovative designs have made Titleist Vokey Design wedges among the most trusted brand among tour professionals worldwide and with golfers of every age and skill level. ``I’m truly humbled by this incredible honour,” Vokey said at his acceptance speech. ``This is something I would never have dreamed of as a young boy growing up in Verdun (in Quebec), working in my dad’s machine shop. I’ve never forgotten where I came from, so to see my name on the same list of Canadian golf legends is overwhelming.

``I have always been surrounded by passionate, hard-working people who love the game as much as I do. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity Wally Uihlein (president and chief executive, Acushnet Company) and Titleist gave me, and this honour is a reflection on him, as well as everybody else who has allowed me to live out my passion during all my years in golf.” Uihlein introduced Vokey at the induction ceremony. “Anybody who knows ‘The Voke’ can agree that our lives have been enriched by his energy, by his enthusiasm and by his passion for his craft,” said Uihlein. “For the past 20 years, one name has been synonymous with golf wedges worldwide, and that name is Bob Vokey. The golf industry has a long history of inventors, craftsmen and artists, but nowhere has a personal touch been more pronounced across any equipment category than by Bob in wedges.”

Women’s Asia-Pacific tournament confirmed for Singapore

women’s equivalent to the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship will be held in Singapore next year. The ninth edition of the men’s tournament, which has become one of the world’s most important amateur events, is being staged in Wellington next month. Four months later women in the Asia-Pacific region will get the same opportunity for the first time. The inaugural Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship has been confirmed for Sentosa Golf Cub in Singapore from February 21-24. The 72-hole strokeplay championship will provide the most talented women’s amateur golfers in the region, including New Zealand, with the opportunity to earn an invitation to play in two major professional championships – the Women’s British Open and the ANA Inspiration. The winner of the women’s Asia-Pacific will also be invited to participate in the 11th staging of the HSBC Women’s Champions, being played the following week

on the same course at Sentosa. The R&A and Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC) have also announced that the Royal Golf Club in Japan will be the venue for the championship in 2019 and 2020. Martin Slumbers, chief executive of The R&A, said: “One of our over-riding objectives is to identify opportunities to further develop and grow women’s amateur golf in key regions around the world. “The Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific offers the chance for the region’s best amateur golfers to aspire to compete at the highest level. We have seen how successful the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship has been in providing a springboard for the elite men’s amateurs and we look forward to replicating this success in unearthing the emerging talents of the women’s game in future.” Players will be invited to participate from member countries of the APGC based on the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR). A total of 86 players will make

up the field and it is expected that around 20 countries will be represented. A maximum number of six players from any country other than the host will be able to enter. The host country will receive an additional four invitations. Kabaya Ohayo Group and Rolex will be the championship’s principal sponsors, while IMG have been engaged to assist with tournament staging and TV broadcasting, which will include live coverage and highlights packages. Dr David Cherry, chairman of the APGC, said: “It is an exciting time for women’s amateur golf in the region and we are delighted to be partnering with The R&A to launch the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific championship. “Some of the world’s most talented women golfers have come from the Asia-Pacific region and we believe that this event will be a hugely important opportunity for elite players to develop their skills and gain valuable experience.”

NEWS

T

New Zealand’s 10 for Asia-Pacific Amateur named

he 10 golfers to represent New Zealand in the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at Wellington next month have been named. They are Nick Voke, Denzel Ieremia, James Anstiss, Henry Spring, Charlie Hillier, Daniel Hillier, Ryan Chisnall, Mark Hutson, Luke Brown and Kerry Mountcastle. Voke, who plays for Iowa State University in the United States, has been in fine form this year. Among his accomplishments are winning the Hawkeye Invitational and the NCAA Austin Regional where he helped Iowa State qualify for the National Championships setting a new scoring record for the university along the way. Ieremia, Anstiss, Spring and Charlie Hillier are also based in the United States. Leading the New Zealand-based charge will be Ryan Chisnall and Daniel Hillier. Chisnall and Hillier recently completed campaigns in the US, gaining valuable competitive experience, preparing them for the challenges ahead, with both players making the cut at the prestigious Southern Amateur finishing 23rd and 15th respectively. Hillier, who already has an impressive resume in his young career, will have the advantage of local knowledge as he is based in Wellington and is expecting the conditions at the Royal Wellington Golf Club at Heretaugna to be challenging. “It’s usually the windiest time of year for us so it will be interesting to see how that affects the course,’’ Hillier said. “It’s also not that warm so the ball won’t be travelling that far and it can be a bit softer so it will play quite long.” “The wind swirls around the course so that trips up a few people. One shot could

be straight into it; one shot could be straight down. You just have to make sure you know where the wind’s coming from when you hit your shot.” Rounding out the group, that is selected from the world amateur golf rankings, are New Zealand Strokeplay champion Mark Hutson, Northland’s Luke Brown and Wellington’s Kerry Mountcastle. New Zealand Golf’s high performance manager Gregg Thorpe is looking forward to the prospect of New Zealand hosting the event and therefore having 10 players in the field as opposed to a maximum of six for other nations. The winner of the tournament gets to play in both the US Masters at Augusta National and the British Open the following year. “The last week in October will represent a fantastic opportunity for these 10 men,’’ Thorpe said. “Having the chance to win a major amateur championship in your own backyard, that comes with the chance to play at Augusta National as well as in an Open Championship is about as exciting as it gets. “This group have been working hard in anticipation of receiving this invite. We were fortunate to have Greg Turner work with the players prior to last year’s New Zealand Amateur at Royal Wellington and we have further preparation planned leading up to the event. “The New Zealand Amateur at Royal Wellington was well supported by the Royal Wellington members and Wellington golf fans alike, so we hope we get some good local support this year too. It will be a great event for the public to come out and watch because you could

be seeing the next Hideki Matsuyama who has won this event twice.” If a Kiwi was to win in 2017 it would be the for the first time. The best performances in the past have been Peter Spearman Burn and Ben Campbell each finishing third in 2009 and 2011 respectively and Luke Toomey coming close last year, but also eventually ending in third place. The invited New Zealanders to play with their world amateur ranking in brackets at time of selection are:Nick Voke (61), Ryan Chisnall (75), Daniel Hillier (93), Luke Brown (221), Denzel Ieremia (315), Mark Hutson (390), James Anstiss (405), Kerry Mountcastle (418), Henry Spring (520), Charlie Hillier (536). The Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship was created in February 2009 as a joint initiative to develop the game by the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation, the Masters Tournament and The R&A. An invitation to play in the Masters Tournament is given to the winner, while both the winner and the runner(s)-up gain a place in The Open Qualifying Series for The Open. Korean Han Chan won the inaugural event in China in 2009, before Hideki Matsuyama won in his native Japan in 2010 and successfully defended his title in Singapore the following year. At 14 years old, Guan Tianlang of China won the fourth edition of the event in 2012, while Lee Chang-woo from South Korea claimed the title the next year in China. Australian Antonio Murdaca became the next champion in 2014 at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club. In the 2015 AAC at The Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club in Hong Kong, Chinese

No 1-ranked amateur golfer, Jin Cheng fired a course-record 8-under 62 in the first round and followed with solid play to win. Australia’s Curtis Luck, then the world’s second-ranked amateur, overcame a seven-stroke deficit to secure a one-shot victory over compatriot Brett Coletta at the eighth Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship held at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club in Korea. The 120-player field is annually comprised of the top male amateurs in the Asia-Pacific region representing the 40 Asia Pacific Golf Confederation member organisations. Countries include: Australia, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Chinese Taipei, Cook Islands, Fiji, Guam, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Lebanon, Macau, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Oman, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Qatar, Samoa, American Samoa, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Vietnam.

ROYAL WELLINGTON GOLF CLUB, WELLINGTON

Royal Wellington was founded in 1895. The course is situated outside New Zealand’s capital city on a parkland site adjacent to the Hutt River. The club has hosted seven New Zealand Open Championships since 1912, and in 2004 became the first golf club in the country to receive Royal status. The course recently underwent a complete redesign, which included the creation of 13 new holes and new greens, tees and bunkers. The new routing resulted in a par 72 course measuring 7219 yards.

Geary wins China tournament for the second time N ew Zealand golfer Josh Geary equalled the tournament record when racing away with victory in the Yunnan Open in China last month. Geary finished the four rounds of the China Tour event at 25 under par which was the same score posted by Gunn Charoenkul of Thailand when he won in 2014. The win was Geary’s second in the tournament. He took out the event two years previously when Gunn was the runner-up. On that occasion Gunn was just one stroke behind Geary but this time round he was seven shots back at 18 under par.

This year Geary started the final round with four birdies in the first five holes and pulled away from the field with a total of seven birdies and no dropped shots. Geary said afterwards: “With Gunn being on my back, I had to play my best to win it. The fourstroke advantage I had before the final round could be gone quickly if I did not pay attention to him, whose best score here was 11 under. “The feeling was so good when you could uphold the champion trophy again.” The winner’s purse was nearly $NZ50,000.

QUEENSTOWN GOLF CLUB (KELVIN HEIGHTS) • Blue 6102m • White 5839m • Ladies 5141m • Red 4100m

Ever seen a post-card of Queenstown? If so then it has probably been taken from the top of Skyline Gondola and has the Queenstown Golf Club in it! This picturesque golf club offers not only stunning views of the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu but is an exciting and challenging golf experience. Located just 20 minutes from Queenstown, or 5 minutes by water taxi, this is one of New Zealand’s iconic golf clubs which is a ‘must play’ for all golfers visiting the region. The Course is surrounded by lake Wakatipu and cradled by stunning mountain ranges so every tee and green has a view which makes it hard to keep your head down! Signature hole’s take on a whole new level at the Queenstown golf club especially the 4th, 5th, 9th, 10th, 14th and 17th which could be signature holes on any course.

ALEXANDRA GOLF CLUB • Blue 6000m • White 5718m • Ladies 5179m

With a proud and loyal membership, Queenstown golf club has a long history and welcomes visitors year-round. Equipped with 36 modern motorised carts, a PGA Professional, Pro shop, 7 day a week Café specialising in homemade faire and fully licenced Bar ensures all your golfing needs are met and exceeded. The signature hole and probably one of the more scenic photographs on a New Zealand golf course would be the par 4 5th that curves left around the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu to an elevated green. Driving line is key as an over aggressive line combined with a miss-timed drive will see you ending up in the drink, however, the hole sets up for a right to left shaped drive which will carve yardage off your approach shot. The facilities are excellent, carts and club hire available from the pro shop. Green fees range from $60-95 depending on seasons. »» www.queenstowngolf.co.nz »» proshop@queenstowngolf.co.nz »» Phone: 03-442 9169

A beautiful drive of just over an hour from Queenstown via the river gorges and main vineyard areas of Central Otago Alexandra lies in the Manuherikia Valley at the confluence of the Manuherikia and Clutha rivers. The valley is enclosed by the high mountain ranges of the Old Man, Dunstan and Hawkduns with the barren Knobby Range overlooking the town. This is a special part of rural Central Otago featuring stunning scenery, great history from the gold mining days as well as plenty of things to do for golfers and non-golfers alike. The course features a flat but undulating links style layout with fully irrigated fairways from tee to green. Narrow

fairways mean accuracy is of prime importance if you are to avoid the desert remnants in the rough and the many trees lining the fairways. Golfers find this a most scenic as well as challenging course. Of interest, and one reason why golfers find their round at Alexandra appears to go so quickly, is the lack of continuous holes of same par value! Only twice in the 18 holes do you play consecutive holes of equal par! The golf course and this unique area are well worth a visit. Come and see what we mean, phone SubPar golf shop on 03 448 8374 or email SubPar@xtra. co.nz to book a tee time now. Green fees are $35 for NZ affiliated players with group discounts available. »» www.alexandragolf.co.nz »» State Highway 8, Alexandra 9340 »» Tel/Fax: 03 448 8204

ARROWTOWN GOLF CLUB • White 5495m • Ladies 5035m

ARROWTOWN GOLF CLUB is the jewel in the crown literally as it sits below the Crown Range and runs alongside the famous Arrow river which over 100 years ago was once a hive of activity during the gold rush era. The course borders the outskirts of Arrowtown which is about 20km from the centre of Queenstown and offers stunning views of some well known ski fields, the Remarkables and Coronet Peak. If you are lucky enough to play on this hidden gem then you’ll will no doubt be blown away by the unique layout of the course as the narrow rolling fairways weave their way through valleys and rocky pillars very much like Roxburgh golf club. In the summertime the Browntop grass in the long rough is left to seed, leaving a colour scheme that represents a truly natural setting and makes the course look like a postcard. In 2012 the course won the New Zealand Golf Course Superintendants Association (NZGCSA) Environment award which

recognises New Zealand’s leading golf course in relation to their environmental management practices. The club under took the removal of wilding trees and broom, while re-establishing Matagouri amongst the schist rock outcrops. From a playability perspective, the course is the shortest out of the top 5 but probably requires the most accuracy from tee to greens. Again like Wanaka, Roxburgh and North Otago, the greens are very small. However for any big hitters, there are a lot of risk and reward holes that can provide a lot of birdies but also double bogeys and beyond. One of the best holes is the 18th which requires a blind shot over a hill to a fairway that slopes to the left towards a pond. A good drive leaves only a wedge shot to the green and a good birdie opportunity however getting a good drive away is the key. Club hire is available and green fees are $50.00 for NZ Affiliated and $85.00 for Non Affiliated. »» www.arrowtowngolf.co.nz »» 166 Centennial Ave, Arrow Junction 9371 »» Phone: 03-442 1719

CROMWELL GOLF CLUB • Black 6462m • Blue 6234m • White 5844m • Yellow 5204m • Red 4468m

The Cromwell Golf Course is located in the centre of Cromwell township. At 200km from the coast the 18-hole tournament course is further from the coast than any other New Zealand course. It is widely considered to be one of the best inland links courses in New Zealand being rated in the top 40 New Zealand courses in the 2016 Australian Golf Digest rankings and currently plays host to the New Zealand Open Final Qualifier. Situated near Lake Dunstan in the heart of the fastest growing wine region in the country, the course is one that will challenge the championship player, while providing plenty of enjoyment for the longer handicapper. The upgrade completed in 2009 has created a fantastic golf experience from tee to green. Cromwell’s low rainfall, 2200 hours of sunshine per year and sand based fairways combine to

guarantee year-round dry underfoot conditions. The rough is a challenge, mainly because of the sandy lies or the Marram grass while the large greens have challenging contours and one of the best putting surfaces you could hope to find. The par 4, 18th is a great finishing hole playing 415m off the black tees. Into the wind your drive is challenging and requires a well struck ball to get you into the valley which is guarded by bunkers either side of the fairway. The approach shot to the green funnels into the basin green but care is required to avoid the front-right green-side bunker. There are a number of other unique holes on the course including exciting doglegs, reachable par 5’s which the longer hitter loves, and tricky par 3’s that punish wayward tee shots. Green fees are $50-$75 with club, trundler and electric carts available for hire, pro-shop and full practise facilities available. »» »» »» »»

WANAKA GOLF CLUB • Blue 5770m • White 5496m • Ladies 5058m

A SHORT 50-minute scenic drive from Queenstown, the township of Wanaka is a stunning and tranquil holiday destination in the heart of the Queenstown Lakes region. Perched above the picturesque township is the lovely Wanaka golf club; the biggest club in Otago and Southland with over 1000 members. Host to the NZ Mixed foursomes in 2016, the NZ Women’s Seniors in 2012 and Men’s in 2009, Wanaka Golf Club boasts a well maintained, charming and challenging layout, with great value for money green fees. Measuring 5743m (blues) and 5474m (whites) the course isn’t long by modern standards, but careful course management and the ability to shape your shots is important if you want to score well. The small greens and natural contours of the land also present their own challenge, so playing safe to the middle of

ROXBURGH GOLF CLUB The Roxburgh Golf Club has been an integral part of the historic region of Central Otago since 1904. The 18 hole golf course is set between the mighty Clutha River to the east and the Old Man mountain range to the west. It is not always easy to concentrate when playing here - Summer days are hot with bright blue skies but the blossom of the fruit trees in the Spring and the beautiful and varied colours of the leaves on these trees in the Autumn are hard to beat. At 4370m and a par of 68, the course

the greens is recommended. It’s also important to try and keep your eye on the ball, as the spectacular views across the town and lake to Mount Aspiring National Park are some of the best in New Zealand, and can certainly add an extra distraction to your game. The two nines are very different. The front-nine, which was established in the 1930s, features an undulating layout with small greens nestled amongst the rolling terrain. The back nine, which was added across the road in 1967, is much longer and slightly flatter—but no less spectacular. The club has progressed significantly in the past decade with capital improvements and course upgrades, making it one of the most scenic and playable courses around. The club features all the usual facilities you’d expect from a quality golf club, including club and cart hire, fully-stocked pro shop, driving range and a café and bar.

NORTH HARBOUR 2017 NORTH HARBOUR MENS STROKE PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP – LUKE BROWN DEFENDS TITLE

New Zealand and Northland representative Luke Brown (Muriwai / The Pines) has won the 2017 North Harbour Stroke Play Championship at Omaha Beach Golf Club to successfully defend the title he won last year, yet again with a fantastic

last round to clinch the prestigious title. After the cut was made after 36 holes Luke trailed the leaders by one shot heading into the 36 hole showdown on Sunday 13th of August. Rounds of 66 and 65 saw him comfortably finish four shots ahead after 72 holes. Runner up was North Harbour open grade and junior representative Kevin Koong (Muriwai/ Huapai), one of the most talented juniors in the country. Top amateurs from all over the country competed in the tournament and despite the awful weather prior, Omaha was presented in fantastic condition. The cut came at a two round total of 156 after two rounds and 50 players made the cut. The first two rounds were played in windy showery conditions but the rain and wind largely stayed away on Sunday which saw lower scores throughout the field. Low round of the

NORTH HARBOUR PLAYERS PERFORM FOR NEW ZEALAND IN THE SANCTUAY COVE TROPHY

The New Zealand men’s senior team were involved in real tussle with the Australia team last week in the Sanctuary Cove Trophy over in Australia. The NZ team would eventually be pipped by 12.5/11.5 points after a fantastic fight back in the singles on day 2. Special mention to the two players from North Harbour involved in these matches, Reg Fleet (Gulf Harbour) and Stu Nicholls (Waitemata). Reg has been selected for the team numerous times and had a winning 2-1 record for the week. It was Stu’s first time selected to represent New Zealand and on debut he certainly delivered winning all 3 of his matches. Well done guys! And well done to the NZ team for coming so close in 2017.

Peg Murphy all players from the first Wills Cup competition established in 1983 were present to award the winners their trophies. Margaret Ranger also played for Putaruru on this finals day. The results were extremely close with the leaders changing constantly as the results filtered in. It was only the final tally of points that determined the winners. Tahuna won the Wills Cup for 2017 with a creditable 117 points by just two points over Pirongia/Kawhia. The Jug for 2017 went to PioPio Aria with 112 points one point ahead of Ngahinepouri.

2017 WILLS CUP & THE JUG WINNERS

The final of the Wills Cup and The Jug was played at Ngaruawahia Golf Cub on Friday August 11th. The day was played in mostly fine conditions on a course that had weathered well considering the rain over the past few weeks. The course was welcomed by many teams whose own home clubs presented difficult, heavy playing conditions. Merle Shaw, Margaret Ranger and Waikato Golf life member

play played recently was won in dramatic fashion in both the girls and boys sections. After inclement weather halted play on Friday and Saturday the event was reduced to only an 18 hole shootout on Sunday. Ela Grimwood and Chantelle Cassidy both posted scores of 5under par 67 to find themselves in a play-off down the 1st hole at the Riverside – Lochiel Course. Chantelle would go on to make birdie and win the Waikato Winter Strokeplay for 2017. This has capped off a great few weeks for Chantelle as she also picked up the Ruth Middleton Championship two weeks earlier. Five under seemed to be the score you needed to get to in the Men’s side also. Northland’s Christian Nitsche first in at 5under after making birdie down 18. Waikato’s Matt Morris would join him shortly after posting a 5under score, and Tom Parker (Christchurch) would make it three after his eagle 3 on the 18th hole. The first play-off hole would see Parker drop out after making par, whilst Matt and Christian would make their birdie 4s. On the second play-off hole, Christian would find the green whilst Matt would chip from over the back. After hitting the flagstick with his chip Matt would have 5feet for his par. After missing his par putt Christian would tap in for his par and for the victory. A spectacular end to the 18 hole event.

MANAWATU WANGANUI RING & RAJ WIN RAIN SHORTENED WANGANUI OPEN

Castlecliffs Hayden Ring and Wanganui’s Tara Raj are the winners of the 2017 Ricoh Wanganui Open played last month at Wanganui Golf Club. Competitors arrived in the morning to heavy rain which quickly put a number of greens under water. Organisers delayed the start with a hope of being able to get 18 holes once the greens drained. Play was able to get underway at 9.30am under clearing skies. However ground conditions were still wet throughout the course, making scoring difficult for many players. The wind also picked up later in the round adding a further challenge.. In the men’s competition Hayden Ring was able to handle the conditions the best to record a solid 71, which was 2 shots clear of Junior Tatana. Guy Perry and Paraparaumu Beach player Caerwyn Ross shared 3rd with 74’s. Tara Raj started favourite in the women’s competition, playing on her home course, and shot a 76 to hold off Levin’s, Brydie Hodge, by 2 shots. Manawatu’s Mudra Lakhani was a further shot back with a 79 to take 3rd place.

WELLINGTON WIN

The Manawatu Wanganui teams playing against Wellington at Otaki last month had an early season wake up call, after a big loss by 49.5 - 14.5. All 4 teams, the seniors mens, senior women, Masters men and Junior men, were beaten by similar margins. The venue for this year was shifted to Otaki, from Levin, after both districts agreed to rotate between those 2 courses for the annual match. With many of the Manawatu Wanganui players being unfamiliar with the course, the result was a little more one sided than it usually is. Wellington also have greater depth to call on, and perhaps had a more experienced side in terms of recent rep matches. For the Manawatu Wanganui mens teams, 3 players originally selected had to withdraw prior to the event, which depleted the experience. Senior number 1, Junior Tatana, could not get over a recent injury, and Masters 1 & 2, Phil Hooper and Tony Chettleburgh had work commitments to

attend to. However the bright side for the Manawatu Wanganui sides was that number 2 womens player Tara Raj had 2 wins against quality opposition and number 2 Junior Kaleb Idemaru, continues his steady form to also record 2 wins. Other players to have one win, was Matt Francis, Regan Cording (at number 1 for seniors), Liam Finlayson, Greg Shaw, Mike McSherry, Ross Geary, Simon Fowler and Mudra Lakhani. Anthony Ilton-Maher, Rick Harding and Lisa Cotton all had a halved match.

ELTON NICHOLSON, JONNO CANE STEP UP FOR WELLINGTON IN NARROW VICTORY OVER AUCKLAND

Defending national men’s interprovincial golf champions Wellington continued their unbeaten run through 2017 with a narrow victory over Auckland in the annual match in Taupo. Led by three wins from as many matches by Elton Nicholson, and two wins and a half to captain Jonno Cane, Wellington scraped home 10.5-9.5 to retain the Durry Pulman Trophy on Sunday. It was Wellington’s fifth win from as many matches this year as they build towards their title defence, after victories over Northland, Hawke’s Bay, Marlborough and Manawatu-Whanganui. Nicholson and Kerry Mountcastle, just named in the 10-strong New Zealand contingent for October’s Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship at Royal Wellington, kicked things off with victory over Auckland No 1 Johnny Tynan and Jared Edwards on the final hole of their foursomes match. Scores were level 2-2 after the foursomes, and when the reverse singles were shared 4-4 it set up a tense final round. No 1 Daniel Hillier lost 3 and 2 to Tynan but the other big guns stepped up, with Cane beating Edwards on the final hole and Mountcastle having a big 6 and 4 win

over Andrew Meng. Wins to Nicholson and Jordan Loof, and a half to Adam Church, were enough to clinch victory for Wellington. In the women’s match Wellington found it tougher against traditional powerhouses Auckland who beat them 8-2. Wellington No 1 Darae Chung was excellent with her team’s only two victories: 4 and 3 over Siyi Keh and 1-up over Auckland’s top player Rose Zheng. No 3 Shontalia William was under the card for long periods of her two narrow losses Carmen Lim and Brittney Dryland.

Roxburgh’s 4BBB Nett was played on Friday 18 August was very successful with a big field. Excellent weather, BBQ on the way around and good results. This was a good social day with plenty of banter and noise in the Clubhouse. Bill and Pauline Bain very generously donated two $500 travel vouchers for

two golfers who had played on Friday and Saturday. The names were drawn and amazingly Bill’s name came out first (whose prize was donated back to the Club for the December Sponsored Tournament) and Margaret Deans.

AORANGI GOLF LIFE MEMBER LESLEY DOBBS PASSES AWAY

Life member Lesley Dobbs passed away peacefully at Strathallan Lifecare, Timaru on 21 August 2017 after a long illness aged 75. Lesley Dobbs was awarded Life Membership of Aorangi Golf in 2015 following her many years of service. Lesley began her golf in 1969 at Maungati Golf Club and joined their committee the year after. As a golfer she was a fierce competitor in pennants playing for both St Andrews (silver) and Maungati (Open and Veterans) not to mention appearing at tournaments all over the district. She joined the South Canterbury Women’s Golf Association in 2004 and took the position of pennants secretary. In 2008 after the merger between men’s and women’s associations, she became a board member of the Aorangi South Canterbury Golf Association. Since then she has single-handedly organised all women’s pennants in Aorangi as well as juggling the Aorangi programme – a measure of her knowledge and amount of work is that her position is being filled by a match committee of four.

MEMORABLE SPORTING WEEKEND FOR MARCUS TESSIER

Marcus Tessier was representing South Caterbury in a golf match against Mid Can-

terbury when he hit a hole-in-one on the 16th hole at Highfield Golf Course. Marcus Tessier notched another hole-in-one at Highfield Golf Club - a day after his 29th birthday - to cap an unforgettable weekend for the South Canterbury sports enthusiast. “It was hectic really. My son had his first birthday on the Monday, so it was a full on three days,” Tessier said of his sporting feats on August 12-13. “I also played two games of basketball on Sunday evening so was glad I took the Monday off work.” It was his third hole-in-one in a golf career that has spanned about 15 years. “I’m certainly going to remember this one as there were about 15 to 16 watching as the green leads on to a couple of other holes. “It was certainly well celebrated.” His previous hole-in-one’s came about 11 years ago at the Twizel Golf Club, on their two par 3s. Tessier’s latest effort came on the par 3 16th at the Highfield Golf Club. “The hole was playing about 140 and I did a three-quarter nine iron and it landed on the green and then rolled towards the cup and found it. “People told me it fell in the dead centre of the cup, pretty much like the perfect putt does.” While the hole-in-one will be remembered for years to come, it came a hole too late for Tessier. The Pleasant Point Golf Club member was playing in a North (Mid Canterbury) against South (South Canterbury) Aorangi representative trial, and had lost his match on the previous hole. “In the context of the match it would’ve been awesome if it came a hole earlier as it would have kept me in the clash with a few holes to play. “I was just getting to know the course and then the hole-in-one occurred.” The success from his ace in the morning spurred Tessier to win his afternoon fixture. The 2.6 handicapper is hoping to reach scratch and said he’d love to play representative golf if given that chance. “It was really good. I got to meet a lot of different players. “Hopefully I can get the opportunity to play for Aorangi and then see where my golf takes me.” He was first introduced to a club while watching his dad play, and wanting to beat him was the motivation to continue playing. “I managed to beat him and have just carried on playing. I love the game, it’s my favourite sport.” Earlier in the year, Tessier also claimed the Hospice hole-in-one

Ben Patston led the Otago GC team of Club Champions to a convincing win in the annual Champions of Otago fixture, held at Lower Waitaki on Sunday 20th of August. Chisholm Links were second, the team of Kyle Geary, Greg McElroy and Aaron Brown, finishing 7 points behind Otago on a total of 67. Lawrence Golf Club won the nett section trophy.
