Are we giving way to the casual golfer? F

By Paul Gueorgieff Editor, Golfer Pacific NZ

ollowing is an argument I have been thinking about for a couple of years. Initially it was just an argument, for the sake of debate. I liked the principle of the argument but thought it would never happen because it was far too radical. But it has got to the stage where I think it is worth a throw of the dice. Many clubs are struggling for membership numbers. It seems everyone has an opinion to why this is so. The game takes too long, say many. There needs to be shorter forms of the game, say many. The game has too many rules, say many. Clubs need to relax dress standards, say many. I say rubbish to all those statements. The game has long taken a little more than four hours to play, for a group of four players. I know that occasionally a round can take five hours and that is too long. I blame the professional golfers for that. They are the worst offenders for slow play. We see them on the television and unfortunately some of us copy them. So do we need a shorter form of the game? As long as the pros play 18 holes we will always want to the play the game the big boys do. In other words, the answer to a shorter form of the game is no. Are there too many rules? The answer, again, is no. Every game must have rules and no matter what the game is, when a rule doesn’t go in our favour we feel aggrieved. Quite frankly, most of us are too lazy to learn the rules. We should allow golfers to play in singlets and thongs. Okay, that’s an exaggeration but I don’t want it at my golf club. I was recently looking at the website of an American golf club which hosts one of the best amateur tournaments in the United States. One of the conditions of being able to play

at the course was that the bill of a cap must be worn towards the front. I don’t have a problem with that, whatsoever. It’s called standards. A friend of mine had a round of golf at one of the top courses in Wellington. After the game he joined his group for a drink in the clubhouse. He ordered a bottle of beer and the bar lady placed a glass on the counter in preparation to pour the contents of the bottle into the glass. My friend interrupted the bar lady to say:

“It’s okay, the bottle will be fine, thanks.’’ The bar lady responded: “Sorry, but we serve our drinks in a glass.’’ My friend was initially taken aback but subsequently appreciated the club had standards. If you go to any decent bar in town, the drinks are always served in a glass. They have standards. So why are clubs struggling for members? I say it is, in part, because we allow green fee players to play almost any time they want. It is the members that keep the club afloat, they are the reason why the club can afford to keep the course in pristine condition, they are the reason the club exists. But because the financial state of many clubs is in a parlous state we encourage non-members to play almost any day, any time. We are desperate for their money. As a consequence casual players know full well they can play for just a fraction of the membership fee. There is no need to become a member despite the fact that the main reason the golf course exists is because of the members — the ones who fork out an annual subscription. I once played at a public course — it had no members — in Australia and it was a disgrace. The fairways were full of divots, virtually none of the bunkers had been raked and on one of the short par threes, the green was littered with pitch marks. You could hardly putt on the green because it was that bumpy from the pitch marks. It was a course I would never return to. So what’s my argument that’s too radical? I believe green fee players should have limited access to a members’ club. It could be to the extent that the only green fee players allowed are those invited by a member. In such a case the member would be required to pay the green fee and it would up to the member to whether or not he recouped the fee from the visiting player. This is radical thinking, I know. But something has to change. Why have club members when any Tom, Dick or Harry can also play virtually any time, any day?

Ryan Chisnall has experience on his side By Paul Gueorgieff Editor Golfer Pacific NZ

R

yan Chisnall is the oldest of the 10 players to represent New Zealand at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship. Chisnall is aged 23 but with his seniority comes experience and he is hopeful that could prove a factor in his favour for one of the world’s most important amateur golf tournaments. The Asia-Pacific Amateur this year takes on great importance for New Zealand with it being held in this country for the first time. It is being hosted by the Royal Wellington Golf Club. Chisnall has already played in two Asia-Pacific Amateurs. The first was in 2015 when he finished 35th at Hong Kong. The second was in Korea last year when he finished 45th. They were not fantastic results but Chisnall believes he can build on them. “The last couple of years I haven’t played overly well which is disappointing,’’ Chisnall recalled to Golfer Pacific. “Hopefully this year I can go a bit better.’’ “Every year that goes by you get more and more experienced. Having the confidence that you know that you are able to compete is a lot higher now for me.’’ The Asia-Pacific Amateur has only been in existence for eight years but it has quickly risen to a world class event. For example the winner at Royal Wellington next month gets a start in two of golf’s majors for professionals — the US Masters and the British Open. “It’s a pretty awesome event,’’ Chisnall said. “It takes a few years to get used to all the attention and obviously with an invite to The Masters it creates a real buzz. “It does take a couple of years to get used to, because there is so much going on. For us to play an event like this where they pour so much money into it, is kind of surreal. “As amateurs you are used to normal

Tour, everyone’s ambition is to play on the PGA Tour.’’ If there’s anyone that provides him with inspiration for a professional career, it’s fellow New Zealander Ryan Fox. Chisnall admires the progress Fox has made as a pro. “Just seeing what Foxy has been able

to do in the last couple of months has been amazing. “I played a lot of amateur golf with him when I was really young. He was obviously a decent player but he was no world beater as an amateur. “There is a lot of positives to take from that and a lot of inspiration from it.’’

amateur events where there is nobody out watching. This is a different beast, that’s for sure.’’ Despite the enormity of the tournament, Chisnall said it was not nerve-wracking for him. “Excitement is more the word I like to use. You just want to get out there and play. “At the end of the day you just have to treat it the same as any other event and stick to your processes.’’ That excitement for Chisnall is mounting. “For me, the last few months I have had so much on. I haven’t had time to think about it. But now all my preparation and lead-ups is targeting that event, so it is starting to become more of an excitement. “But it is good though because it gets you out of bed nice and early in the morning. You have something to strive for.’’ Chisnall played three important amateur events in the United States during our winter. He finished 20th in two of them and 23rd in the other. They were very creditable results. “I played reasonably well. It was kind of a mixed bag but there was a lot of positives to take away from them as well.’’ Chisnall is from Nelson and is familiar with the Royal Wellington course. “Obviously my game has been trending in the right direction for the last couple of years. Experience does play a big part but having a bit of local knowledge will help as well. “I haven’t played the course a lot but I know it well enough.’’ Chisnall will attend qualifying school at the end of the year for the Australasian PGA Tour but will not turn professional just for the sake of it. “I’m not going to turn pro unless I have got decent status on a tour. “I’m just kind of happy playing the game — my love of game is so big. I’ll take whatever I get from it. “Obviously I want to play of the PGA

Fresh breath of air for Otago’s Autumn Classic GOLF EVENT 6

PaR nz Golfing Holidays has taken over management of the popular Central Otago Autumn Golf Classic to be held in Central Otago next April. It will be the 10th anniversary of the five-course tournament, which typically attracts more than 400 men and women players. Many competitors arrive as teams representing over 150 clubs throughout New Zealand and Australia. Tournament Director Denise Langdon, of PaR nz Golfing Holidays, says the region is likely to be at its crisp, clear and colourful best for the event scheduled for April 9 – 13, 2018. The mixed field will be divided into four groups, each named for an Otago lake and comprising about 100 mixed-ability players. The five courses involved – Alexandra, Arrowtown, Cromwell, Queenstown and Wanaka – are some of the country’s most picturesque. Every group will play every course, with cumulative stableford points determing the winners in multiple divsions resulting in numerous prizes awarded daily along with overall individual winners in handicap divisions and, team awards. “Now’s the time to be getting teams together for a great week,” says Denise Langdon. “Most participants choose to stay in Queenstown – but wherever you’re based you are no more than about an hour from a tournament course.” Entries open on October 1, and PaR nz Golfing Holidays can help with accommodation and favourable car rental, and Air New Zealand fares. PaR nz Golfing Holidays have confirmed the on-going support of local winery Mount Michael Wines who have signed up for another three years. The tournament will continue to be known as the Mount Michael Central Otago Autumn Golf Classic. The naming sponsor, Mount Michael Wines have a proud history with one of the countries youngest winery owners fronting this dynamic Otago winery. Mount Michael Wines have sponsored this tournament for over 10 seasons and are pleased to see the event flourish with PaR nz Golfing Holidays. Anna Robbie purchased the business in 2015 and along with partner Tim Dunsdon, who brings with him an agricultural background, Robbie is embracing the 20-year legacy of Mount Michael. Proudly boutique and producing around 3000 cases per annum, the association with the Central Otago Autumn Golf Classic gives the winery a chance to shine to a very wide audience across both sides of the Tasman. One of the initiatives that has been introduced by Robbie and Dunsdon, is a personally guided private heli-tasting experience allowing wine-buffs to taste the wine collection comprising Pinot Gris, Pinot Rose and Pinot Noir, while also seeing this marvellous area from atop Mount Michael itself. Other sponsorship arrangements are in discussion with PaR nz Golfing Holidays with beer, car rental and accom-

modation partners expected to be announced shortly. The tournament will be launched with a new logo symbolising the area and the colours of Autumn.

SETTING THE SCENE

The travel guides exhaust superlatives when it comes to describing the Central Otago region, where the annual Autumn Classic is held. Mountains, lakes, forests, cliffs, grasslands, rock outcrops and wide expanses of sky – ‘stunning’ is a word that applies to them all. Never mind bunkers, gazing at the landscapes instead of keeping your eye on the little white ball is a real-enough hazard. Here is a taste of what’s in store at each Autumn Classic course:

ALEXANDRA

Despite a small membership base, this club is widely known for its consistently well-presented course. The club has a long and proud tradition of improvement and voluntary effort. Formed more than 110 years ago on a nearby site before moving 50 years ago to today’s course, it was created on sandy desert soils near the mighty Clutha River. The narrow fairways make the 18-hole course unexpectedly tight and difficult, and an additional challenge is presented by native grasses growing in the rough. An ornamental pond and sculptures are a welcome sight for tired players on the final hole. Golfers with a sense of adventure might enjoy riverboat cruises, or exploring the rail trail and local wineries after play.

ARROWTOWN

Arrowtown Golf Club’s course is set in rolling hills on the outskirts of an historic gold-mining town. Formed along the Arrow River below the Crown Range, players almost always have clear views of Coronet Peak and the Remarkables during autumn. Soon after members completed a

major environmental redevelopment, the New Zealand Golf Course Superintendants Association awarded the club its 2012 environment award. The project involved removing wilding trees and broom, and re-establishing matagouri among schist outcrops. The shortest course in the Autumn Classic stable, big-hitters must weigh up risks and rewards on many holes. The 18th, for example, calls for a blind shot over a hill to a fairway sloping towards a pond. Good luck with that.

CROMWELL

Like its Clutha River neighbour at Alexandra, Cromwell Golf Club is also more than 100 years old. It hit its stride in the late-1970s when construction workers for the Clyde Dam and hydro-electricity projects boosted membership. The championship course was formed over terrain modified by years of gold mining activity and with its strategic plantings of marram grass, it resembles a coastal course though it is 200km from the sea. With design input from professional Greg Turner, who has played the course since he was a child, the million-dollar development work done in 2010-12 made the course even more challenging and interesting. The innovative club routinely hosts the annual New Zealand Open Qualifier tournament. The Cromwell basin is in the heart of fruit-growing country and is one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing wine regions.

QUEENSTOWN

The Kelvin Heights peninsula, home to the picturesque Queenstown Golf Club, often features in classic Queenstown postcard images taken from the gondola at Bob’s Peak. The course is surrounded by Lake Wakatipu and framed by the Remarkables mountain range, which makes it hard to keep your head down. Golfers are afforded amazing views of mountains and shimmering alpine waters at

October 2017

every tee and green. ‘Signature hole’ takes on a whole new meaning at this extraordinary course – the fourth, fifth, ninth, 10th, 14th and 17th could be signature holes on any course. If you had to choose, it probably would be the par-four fifth that curves left around the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu to an elevated green. Compare scenic photographs from any New Zealand golf course, and some of the best will be taken from here. Driving line is key on this hole, as an over-aggressive line combined with a mistimed drive will see you ending up in ‘the drink’. However, the hole sets up for a right-to-left shaped drive which will carve yardage off your approach shot. With a proud and loyal membership base, the club has a long history and welcomes visitors year-round.Wanaka The award-winning Wanaka Golf Club is one of the largest in the Otago-Southland region, and is set to host the popular New Zealand Mixed Foursomes for the third time this year. Like most of the scenic courses involved in the Autumn Classic, Wanaka began as a nine-hole course created in a rugged landscape. Formed in the 1922 at another location, the present course is nestled above the Wanaka township in the heart of the Queenstown Lakes region. Players negotiating the front-nine have views over the township to Lake Wanaka and the Mount Aspiring National Park. The back-nine has more of a parkland feel with tree-lined fairways and views of Mt Iron, Mt Gold and the Cardrona Valley. A challenging layout following natural contours in addition to small greens make the Wanaka course one to be remembered for more than its imposing scenery. More than 22,000 golfers comment on proposed new rules GOLF NEWS

T

he Royal & Anicent and the United States Golf Association have received comments on proposed new rules from more than 22,000 golfers in 102 countries, as well as representatives of golf organisations throughout the world, providing valuable feedback as the organisations work toward their implementation on January 1, 2019. With the world-wide survey and evaluation period now complete, The R&A and the USGA and their respective committees will continue to review all comments received with the goal of finalising the new rules next spring and beginning a comprehensive education programme later in 2018. The R&A and the USGA began an extensive review of the rules starting

in 2012, with the intention of making them easier to understand and apply. A draft of the new rules – reduced from the current 34 to a proposed 24 rules – was released in March, beginning the six-month feedback period that was open to the entire golf community. David Rickman, executive director – governance at The R&A, said: “It is pleasing to see that so many people from different parts of the world have taken this opportunity to engage with the process of modernising the rules. We have received insightful comments and suggestions from throughout the professional and amateur game and will take time to consider the feedback in detail. We will then work on finalising the changes ahead of their implementation in 2019.”

Thomas Pagel, USGA senior director of rules and amateur status, said: “After listening to golfers and reviewing the extensive comments, one thing is very clear – we all share a passion for the game and are eager to be a part of this process. We appreciate everyone who took time to provide their thoughts and insights. They have been very helpful and encouraging.” While the feedback will continue to be analysed over the next few months, several common themes emerged, including: • Golfers are enthusiastic about the scope and direction of the overall changes, such as pace-of-play improvements, the elimination of penalties and streamlined procedures. • Golfers provided the most feedback

on the proposed rules changes focused on the putting green (such as putting with the flagstick left in the hole, repairing spike marks and eliminating the penalty for accidentally moving a ball); the creation of ‘penalty areas’ (extending water hazard type relief and eliminating penalties for moving loose impediments and grounding a club); and the new dropping procedures (including the size of ‘relief areas’). • Golfers strongly welcomed the new player’s edition of the Rules and found it much easier to read and understand. The current 2016 edition of the rules of golf remains in effect when playing, posting scores or competing until the January 1, 2019 adoption of the new rules.

Hawke’s Bay local storms home to win NZ under-19 championship A

brilliant finish of birdies on the last two holes saw local boy Mako Thompson snatch victory in the New Zealand Age Group Championship at the Hastings Golf Club in Hawke’s Bay. Thompson, from the nearby Maraenui Golf Club in Napier but also a Hastings club member, did not make a great start to the final round of the tournament. He was two over par after the first nine holes but all that changed over the final nine holes, including an eagle on the par five 10th hole. “I don’t normally take driver on that hole,’’ Thompson recalled. “But I then stuck a three iron in there and backed it up with a 15foot putt, so it was a fun start to the back nine.” Birdies on the last two holes saw Thompson finish the last nine holes at three under par to take victory in the senior division of the tournament, the under-19 grade, by one stroke. “I’m very happy after a shaky start with a couple of bogeys on the front nine, but coming home in 33 was pretty cool and very happy with the birdie, birdie finish.” The tournament, first played in 1962, has been won by the likes

10

of Greg Turner (1981), Michael Campbell (1987), Michael Long (1988), Adam Scott (1996), Steven Bowditch (2000) and Jason Day (2004). Thompson said he was honoured his name would be etched alongside them on the trophy. “I’m absolutely stoked, I have looked at all the names on this trophy, so to be part of that sort of company is awesome.’’ Meanwhile it was no surprise that the women’s under-19 division was won by Ayean Cho from Korea. She had recently made the cut in an LPGA Tour event and went on to win by five shots at Hastings. Cho had started the final day tied for the lead with Amelia Garvey from Canterbury. But the twohorse race soon became one after Cho’s experience and class came to the fore with a four-under par front nine. Her composed round of five-under, which included an eagle on the par four eighth hole, proved why she is inside the top 50 amateurs in the world. She finished the tournament with a total of 14-under over three rounds. Mako Thompson with his trophy after winning the New Zealand Age Group Championship.

Ping to appeal $2.6 million fine over internet ban

olf club manufacturer Ping Europe Limited (Ping) says it will appeal a fine of $2.6 million for banning United Kingdom retailers from selling its golf clubs online, according to a report in Golf Business News. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found that Ping broke competition law by preventing two UK retailers from selling its golf clubs on their websites. Ping is required to bring the online sales ban to an end, and must not impose the same or equivalent terms on other retailers. The fine was £1.45 million, which is the equivalent of $NZ2.6 million. CMA said Ping had to allow retailers to sell online but it could require them to meet certain conditions before doing so. These conditions must, though, be compatible with competition law. The CMA found that, while Ping was pursuing a genuine commercial aim of promoting in-store custom fitting, it could have achieved this through less restrictive means.

Ann Pope, senior director for Anti-trust enforcement, was quoted by Golf Business News as saying: “The internet is an increasingly important distribution channel and retailers’ ability to sell online, and reach as wide a customer base as possible, should not be unduly restricted. “The fine the CMA has imposed on Ping should act as a warning to companies that preventing its products from being sold online could be illegal. “The level of the fine imposed on Ping reflects that the CMA found the breach of competition law occurred in the context of a genuine commercial aim of promoting in-store custom fitting.” In response Ping Europe said in a statement: ``Ping Europe profoundly disagrees with the announced decision. Our internet policy is an important pro-competitive aspect of our long-standing commitment to custom fitting. “This ensures the customer is fitted

in person, something which cannot be achieved in an online environment. Ping Europe strongly believes consumers should be custom fitted in person by a trained Ping fitter before purchasing Ping golf clubs – that is why we adopted our internet policy. “This personal face-to-face service is the key to realising the full value and performance designed and built into every Ping club. More than five decades of effort, resources and commitment has established Ping as the industry leader in custom fitting. “Ping Europe will be appealing the decision to the Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) to demonstrate how our policy benefits consumers and improves consumer choice. Whilst the CMA’s decision does not require an immediate change to Ping’s internet policy, we will be seeking a stay to keep our internet policy in place during the appeal process.”

here are just six holes. One is a mere 30 metres in length and the longest is just 70 metres. The greens and tees are synthetic. They are the key aspects of a new golf course opened by Frilford Heath Golf Club in England. Frilford Heath, in Oxfordshire, already has three 18-hole courses but decided to build the six-hole course to encourage young people and beginners to play the game. Frilford Heath executive chairman Alistair Booth said: “Introducing a new six-hole course to our selection of three 18-hole courses means we are making golf accessible. “Beginners and younger players who might otherwise be too afraid to play a longer course because of their level of skill can now be assured that they can play a game of six holes in an hour. “We want to safeguard the future of this sport and feel that in order to do so, we need to make golf available to everyone.”

New Zealand’s team for Nomura Cup G O L F T R AV E L

N

ew Zealand’s team for the Nomura Cup in November has been named. It comprises Nick Voke (Auckland), Ryan Chisnall (Tasman), Daniel Hillier (Wellington) and Luke Brown (Northland). The Nomura Cup is for countries from the Asia-Pacific region. This year’s tournament is to be held in Malaysia from November 9-12. Voke and Chisnall lead the team, both being incumbent members of New Zealand’s side for the Eisenhower Trophy, the world’s team championship for amateurs. Voke, who is the top ranked New Zealand amateur on the Royal & Ancient world rankings, has also been performing well of late, including a fifth at the prestigious Western Amateur Championship in the United States. Chisnall has also performed well recently in the US where he played the Players’ Championship, the Southern Amateur and the Western Amateur. Hillier, 19, has already amassed a number of key titles, including two New Zealand junior U19 Championships, the 2017 Australian Junior Championship, a Charles Tour event in the Harewood Open as well as a New Zealand Amateur Championship. This

will be Hillier’s debut in a senior representative team, but one he is more than ready for. Brown rounds out the team of four. New Zealand Golf high performance manager Gregg Thorpe said Brown has shown steady improvement over the last 12-18 months and has earned his position in the team through his dedication to bettering his game and through the performances that have come as a consequence of this hard work. Denzel Ieremia (Waikato/Iowa State) has been named as the non-travelling reserve. While in previous years players have been able to attend the various professional tour schools that are held during the latter parts of the year, without

missing out on national honours, sadly this year there is a clash. With Nick Voke registering for this year’s Web.com Tour qualifying series there is the potential for his second stage to clash with the Nomura Cup. If Voke makes it through his first stage in early October, Ieremia will step in to take the open fourth position within the team. Thorpe added: “ Nick Voke has been an integral member of both the 2015 Nomura Cup and last year’s Eisenhower Trophy teams, it’s important we give him every chance to represent New Zealand again, while also being supportive of his eventual move into the professional ranks. “In fact, I hope he can’t play come November. In the same breath we want

to leave that spot open for him as part of his plan B. Either way, I know Nick or Denzel will bring something special to this team come November, and either way it’s a strong line up.” The Nomura Cup is conducted by the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation. Each team consists of four male players, contesting 18 holes of strokeplay for four days. In each round, the lowest three individual scores constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team’s score for the championship. The winning team receives the Nomura Cup, which was named after Shun Nomura, the former Vice-President of the Japan Golf Association who donated the Cup.

New Zealand golf coaches punching above their weight prehensive PGA programme. In 2008, my friend, NZPGA golf professional Andre White, from the Manawatu Golf Club, first took off on a three week trip to work with his student Tim Wilkinson. They had worked together since Tim was 13-years-old and they had created a very strong student/coach relationship. Today, Andre can spend up to an hour in the office of the Manawatu golf shop watching Tim hit balls on a practice venue at a PGA Tour event, as if he was right there. As Andre says “Facetime is brilliant. I can see, hear and feel like I’m actually there.” He can even engage in some of the conversations with a few of the tour players he knows as they come and talk to Tim while he is practicing. “I know Tim’s swing inside out and I’ve taught him to understand what he is happening, so I am passively guiding not actively teaching”. Andre has also picked up an Australian PGA tour pro who is regularly sending footage through to him using Facetime as well. “I have spent time with him in person, so we have that relationship and we use technology for nearly daily student/

he talent of the NZPGA golf professional is world leading. Per capita, I believe we have the most successful and talented golf coaches, when you look at the world rankings. These coaches have developed players to play and win on every major tour. But best of all, they are actively working with the next group of young players coming through, including junior players from the age of five. Even though some New Zealand golf courses aren’t as difficult as those in many other countries, the accessibility of the game makes our players develop faster. There are few barriers to playing the game here, so everyone has the opportunity to tee it up. We have lots of golf courses while fees are very reasonable compared to other countries. I also believe that the high quality coaching education through the PGA provides opportunities for coach development and a lot of opportunities to develop players that come from many different moulds. Everyone is taught excellent fundamentals as part of the com-

teacher work which can continue, even when I am miles away”. When you consider all of our professional talent, like the Kiwi players that are on the world tours like Ryan Fox and Michael Hendry who are coached by Marcus Wheelhouse (Auckland), or coach John Griffin (Queenstown) often works remotely with Steve Alker along with Paul Parlane (now based in Los Angeles). There’s also Steve Jessup (Taupo) who coached Danny Lee to a US Amateur win and onto the PGA Tour, and Guy Wilson (North Shore) who guided Lydia Ko to be a world class player and Richard Woodhouse (formerly from Nelson) over in Queensland working with some of the top Australian pro and amateur golfers. We mustn’t forget Gareth Winslow, head coach of the Shanghai women’s golf team and former coach of China women’s national team, who has had an influential impact on the women’s game in China over his last 13 years of living there. And there are many more NZPGA members living here in NZ and overseas that have had success at all levels of the game — too many for me to mention in this article.

I believe the success our golf coaches is due to their passion for knowledge and the time they spend continually educating themselves for the benefit of your game! I regularly see our PGA members attending seminars and continuing education sessions. Sessions like the recent one hosted by our own PGA at Remuera, where some world class speakers shared their expertise. Then there are the pros like Kerryn Jamieson from the Pakuranga Golf Club who spent time with some of the leading teaching minds on a recent visit to California. So whether you are taking a lesson from some of the pros I have already mentioned or from pros like Shelley Duncan at the Otago Golf Club, Alan Rose at the Wanaka Golf Club, Jason Tilley in Christchurch, Kevin Smith in Wellington or Andrew Horan in Hamilton, you really are working with some extremely talented teaching professionals that know their stuff and can really help your game. The one thing I can assure every golfer in New Zealand is that we have many world class golf coaches right here in Aotearoa, so tap into their skills and improve your golf this summer.

PGAPARS

pga.org.nz

By Duncan Simpson New Zealand PGA Secretary

Ask any random group of club golfers what their main gripes are, and the chances are that pace of play will be high on the list. Of course, no one will admit to being the cause of (or part of) the problem, so it is perhaps unsurprising that little progress seems to have been made over the years. However, there could be light at the end of the tunnel. The proposed changes to the rules of golf have a strong emphasis on speeding up play, and so far they seem to be getting a positive response. Trying the new rules out at club level (but not in competitions) is being encouraged by the Royal & Ancient, including the adoption of “ready golf” as a key element, so rather than waiting for whatever 2019 brings, perhaps it’s time to have a close look at what can be done right now. The first – and most important principle – is that the whole club needs to commit to ready golf, otherwise different groups will be playing at different paces and potentially even more frustration will result. Secondly, health and safety is paramount. You need to be aware of where

Ready golf worth a look your fellow players are at all times, and be particularly careful if they are in front of you when you play a shot. Next: use your common sense – ready golf is not speed golf. If your objective is to get from the 1st tee to the 19th hole in the shortest possible time, then I suggest you and your group book the first tee time of the day, and go for it. Otherwise, the aim should be to cut out some of the time wasted by sticking strictly to the current rules around who has the honour, and waiting for the player who is furthest from the hole to play first. As an example, if the player who has the honour is not ready to play for whatever reason: putting on wet weather gear, taking a laser measurement (by the way, it’s not necessary for all four players to laser a par 3, as I’ve seen on a few occasions), writing down the score, searching for a tee or any of the other things that delay teeing off. It may go against the grain to relinquish the honour, but if it is clearly helping to save time, I’m sure

we’ll all get over it. Hit your shot before helping to search for a lost ball, where it makes sense. Usually the player has the best idea where his/her ball went, and four searchers don’t necessarily find a ball four times faster. If everyone goes searching before they have played their shots, you will simply be adding time to an already delayed hole. In any case, the R & A is wanting to reduce the allowable search time to three minutes from 2019, so we may as well get used to speeding up this area because the current five minute allowance is often stretched beyond the limit to become a major factor in slow play. Quite a lot of time can be saved around the greens as well by not sticking rigidly to the current order of play. Players can start putting while another is raking a bunker, and putt out where possible rather than marking their ball. There are of course plenty of other ideas for speeding up play (see for example my article “Let’s speed it up in 2016”

from two years ago), and perversely, these may have exacerbated the problem. In a game already over-endowed with rules, regulations and protocols, golfers don’t like to be told yet again how to suck eggs. The beauty of ready golf is that it is about using your initiative and common sense according to the situation, and most of us are already using the principles some of the time. Where it has been tried on a larger scale, the results have been impressive: groups in the R & A’s spring meeting this year were told to adopt ready golf, and completed medal rounds on the Old Course in an average of three hours and 38 minutes. It’s all about small gains: it’s not difficult to save a minute and a half per hole by following the suggestions above, which might not sound a lot, but amounts to 30 minutes across a whole round. If you think that’s worth having, why not talk to your club and PGA professional, and give it a go?

GOLFCOACHING By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional

H

ere is a situation I deal with a lot in the pro-shop when coaching or talking with golfers. It’s to do with the expectation we put on ourselves when we play golf and the negative influences it can play on our performance. It manifests with all levels of golfers and is something that we find hard to realise we are doing and struggle to fix. I will cover several situations and try and remedy these by giving some techniques or drills to help. 1. Age and the inability to cope with increasing handicap and scores If you have been a good player in years gone by but start to struggle or just can’t quite get your game back can affect people’s motivation and enjoyment. These players have deep expectations of the level they expect themselves to play each time. When their games slip, being able to understand this and play to their new level can be frustrating. In fact I have seen some give the game away because of such feelings. I myself struggle with not being able to play to what level I used to expect myself to play. Im 43 now and think I should

100percentgolf.com

The danger of expectations play like I did when I was 20 even though I don’t practice and play maybe once a month. We have to realise that in golf if you don’t use it you lose it. As we age our body generally changes, flexibility reduces and without practice and lessons performance naturally lowers. How can we fix this? Acceptance that this is natural and get back to the roots of why we played the game in the first place should be first priority. Assess what you can do to help yourself including a practice plan, joining a gym and even look at new clubs. Not one fix will work by itself but creating a plan is what you need. If you now play once a week give up trying to play like you are on the PGA. Take the good days with the bad and enjoy the beer after. 2. In Tournament Expectations No matter if its club champs or the NZ Masters or just a club day, controlling your level of emotions during all the rounds separates winners from losers.

One of the biggest dangers before a big tournament is that you play your best round of golf for a long time. This is great that you have achieved this but could be bad news for the tournament coming up. Its dependant on how far away it is and if you have followed the good round up with several others. If it’s just a one off achievement close to your tournament, watch out for increased nerves and expectations to performance. How to fix? Don’t play a proper round in your practice round is suggested. Hit a couple of balls etc and pick up as you play. This I learnt at an early age playing tournaments. Due to in round expectations also affecting our thoughts in games, set mini performance goals for every three holes. Then if you start badly after three holes you can start again on the next three holes. The reverse could also happen when you hit a gold patch in your round. Its easy to suddenly start thinking of the

good round you are going to have but a bad shot will drop you like a sack of spuds. Breaking your round into three hole rounds is a good way to stop this happening. So expectations sneak in without us knowing. The subconscious is so much stronger than the conscious so at tournaments and in rounds you need to become aware of any patterns happening. Many times you wont realise but when you reflect on a round you may see it more clearly. Then try some ways to stop it happening. If you are frustrated and annoyed with the game because you can’t play like you used to put things in perspective. This is especially important if you have had an injury, accident or operation for example. The body just won’t work like it used to so take it as it comes and enjoy those extra shots you get. You are still on the course playing and that’s what matters.

SILVERSTREAM GOLF PARK

Manor Park Golf Sanctuary, “a sanctuary for all golfers” as it is now promoted, is somewhat unique as it is a golf and birdlife park and the Club holds an internationally recognised sanctuary environmental certification from Audubon International, New York. It has an 18hole championship par 71 golf course set in beautiful native bush and wetlands with gently rolling fairways bordered by the Hutt River on the eastern side and the Haywards Stream to the west and is home to 20 different species of bird. The Club’s Play & Stay package is with partner CQ Hotels (www.hotelwellington. co.nz) in Wellington City, 25 minutes by car or via commuter train to Manor Park station at the gates to the course .

Silverstream Golf Park features a long established driving range and 9-hole golf course, and is located off Fergusson Drive from State Highway 2. The driving range is amongst the biggest in the lower North Island with 20 covered bays and a hitting area of up to nearly 300m. The 9-hole course is flat and easy-walking. It is ideal for those learning the game or those who do not have the time for 18 holes. The course is affiliated to New Zealand Golf which means you can become a member and gain a handicap and therefore also receive reduced greens fees at other courses around the country. If you do not wish to become a member you can purchase concession cards which will give you a reduced rate.

As Graham Marsh (course architect) said, “Miramar will always be remembered by me as a golf course that was redesigned for all the right reasons-a membership that bonded together to protect their love of the game”.

The host of 12 New Zealand Opens, Paraparaumu Beach Golf Course has long been regarded by many as the spiritual home of New Zealand Golf. A regular inside the World Top 100 Golf Course lists and considered one of the best links courses in the Southern Hemisphere a pilgrimage to play is a must for all that love the game. Once you’ve experienced it, you’ll understand just why golf played at Paraparaumu Beach Golf Course is golf at its purest. »» www.paraparaumubeachgolfclub.co.nz

Ping G400 series now released!

P

ING’s fastest and most forgiving driver to date and an iron that delivers tour-level distance and ball flight highlight the new G400 Series. The full line of custom-fit, custom-built drivers, irons, fairway woods, hybrids and crossovers is engineered to help golfers lower their scores and increase their enjoyment of the game. The new equipment is available for order and custom fitting at authorized Golf Shops throughout New Zealand. “The G400 driver is a prime example of how our engineering team looks at every single detail of a club to ensure we are optimizing each design variable so golfers can improve performance,” said John A. Solheim, PING Chairman & CEO. “In this case, we’ve gone slightly smaller in volume (445cc) to improve aerodynamics for faster clubhead speeds while actually raising the MOI higher than any previous PING driver. We also employed a thinner, forged face to deliver increased ball speeds. This commitment to performance enabled impressive distance gains and tighter dispersion, the ultimate driving combination. We’ve also engineered an incredibly pleasing sound in the driver through computer simulation that will turn heads on the tee box when golfers get it in their hands. It even has a shaft that changes color at address to improve the player’s focus.” PING’s tour staff, including Lee Westwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Mackenzie Hughes, David Lingmerth and Daniel Summerhays, has been quick to switch to the new G400 driver with more than 70 currently in play around the world. “We’ve never seen faster conversion to a new product than we did at last month’s U.S. Open with 13 drivers in play

The Ping G400: A faster speed of flight.

18

the first week it was available,” Solheim added. “The players immediately loved the look of the driver and became enamored with the powerful sound and feel. At the end of the week, the statistics proved that both the longest and most accurate players off the tee at the U.S. Open relied on a G400 driver.” The unique forging and patented heat-treatment process of the T9S+ face powers a thinner, hotter impact area that is precision machined to elevate ball speed across the entire face for 16% more flexing and when paired with the aerodynamic gains, results in ball-speed gains of nearly 2 mph. By making the face 6% thinner and 9% lighter than its predecessor, extra weight was placed strategically to tighten dispersion even further through higher MOI. The forged face was also instrumental in producing the powerful feel of the driver. The G400 driver’s high-density tungsten back weight and Dragonfly Technology help bring the combined MOI (heel/toe and high/low) over 9,000 gram cm2 for the first time and position the CG lower and farther back than any current driver on the market – making it the most forgiving driver in golf. In testing, the G400 outperformed the leading drivers in the marketplace, most notably when comparing dispersion results. “We pay very close attention to the dispersion data when we analyze and compare product results,” said John K. Solheim, PING President. “Dispersion is an overall performance measurement that reveals just how consistent your distance and accuracy results will be on the golf course. We encourage all golfers to get fit and look closely at their dispersion, not just their one best shot on a launch monitor. We know they’ll be much more satisfied over the long term. They’ll not only hit it farther more consistently, they’ll find the fairway more often and their scores will go down.” The streamlined shaping harmonizes with new, bolder turbulators and Vortec Technology to reduce drag by 40% mid-downswing and 15% overall to increase clubhead speed. The Dragonfly crown technology extends to the skirt section on the sole, providing additional weight savings and creating an “infinity edge” effect that adds to the inspiring look at address. Extensive research and computer simulation coupled with music theory allowed the engineers to design internal architecture that fine-tuned the frequencies to produce a deeper, more muted sound. One tour professional compared it to “the satisfaction of puring a persimmon driver with the modern technology

of the G400.” Adding to the appeal of the G400 driver is the innovative paint-shifting paint technology of the Alta CB shaft. This premium copper shaft paint transitions to nearly black to reduce distractions as golfers address the ball. The counter-balanced design of the Alta CB allows for more mass in the head to increase energy transfer. Three head options are available to match a G400 driver to a golfer’s desired ball flight. The standard version is engineered to fit most golfers. The SFT (Straight Flight) is designed to correct a left-to-right ball flight (for right-handed golfers) and features heel-side tungsten weighting and a lighter swing weight to help square the face. The LST (Low Spin) version positions the tungsten weight closer to the face to reduce spin approximately 300 rpm for a stronger ball flight. The new G400 iron is engineered to give golfers tour-level distance and towering height combined with the forgiveness and control they need to hit more greens. Its COR-Eye Technology combines with a new top rail undercut to increase face flexing in a catapult-like fashion for faster ball speeds that launch shots higher and farther with low spin for a strong flight. A unique heat-treating process produces Hyper 17-4 stainless steel, which makes the face 40% stronger than traditional 17-4 stainless steel and allows for a thinner face and 18% more face flexing. “The G400 iron delivers phenomenal performance,” said John K. Solheim. “We like to call it our ‘game enjoyment’ iron because it’s so much fun to play. It provides tour-level performance while being very easy to hit and extremely forgiving with an amazing feel. Some golfers are seeing distance improvements as much as 15 yards, yet it is launching much higher and landing softer to give them more control. One of our tour players said it best during testing: ‘This G400 7-iron has turned into my 6-iron but in an 8-iron window.’ He got it exactly right. Golfers can expect one less club to the green with the height of two less clubs. That’s a powerful combination.” A composite back-cavity badge made of aluminum and elastomer provides an enriched impact response that creates a powerful sound and feel. The Hydropearl Chrome finish reduces friction to improve turf interaction while giving it a premium look. To maximize distance in the fairway woods and hybrids, PING has employed C300 maraging steel as the face material. One of the strongest alloys in the world, maraging steel is commonly used in the aerospace industry, where strength and flexibility are necessities. It’s those properties that also make it an ideal face material to deliver more flexing for faster ball speeds that launch shots farther and higher. “Our main goal in the G400 fairway

October 2017

woods and hybrids was to introduce significant distance gains while maintaining other performance benefits such as forgiveness and the ability to launch the ball easily,” said John A. Solheim. “With maraging steel, we have a material that allows us to go extremely thin with the face to give us the faster ball-speed gains we’re seeking for more distance and higher launch. The results have been amazing as we’re seeing face flexing equal to the thickness of the face.” The G400 fairway wood has expanded fitting options with the addition of a 9-wood and three SFT (Straight Flight) choices (3, 5, 7) to help golfers bring their shots back on line. The Stretch 3-wood is also available as a high-performance option off the tee to deliver distance and accuracy or when going for par-5s in two. Progressive CG locations in the G400 hybrid offer versatility in helping golfers properly gap their sets. The 2- and 3-hybrids are engineered with a CG more toe side to minimize a left bias while the 4-, 5-, and 6-hybrids are designed help golfers launch the ball higher with added forgiveness. The second generation of the crossover, which combines the precision and control of an iron with the ball speed and forgiveness of a hybrid, has been improved to make it a versatile option for golfers of all skill levels. It also relies on a maraging steel face, which improves the sound and delivers higher launch, producing 30% more stopping power. The addition of a 20-gram tungsten toe weight increases forgiveness, resulting in 17% tighter dispersion. The turf interaction is greatly improved with a thinner sole and Hydropearl Chrome finish, which reduces friction 40%. The popular Golf Pride Tour Velvet grip (irons, hybrids and crossovers) and Tour Velvet 360 (driver and fairway woods) are the stock grips on the G400 Series and are offered in six color-coded sizes (Blue -1/16", Red -1/32", Aqua -1/64", White std., Gold +1/32", Orange +1/16") to fit golfers’ hand sizes. The Tour Velvet Cord is available in standard and +1/32" sizes for an upcharge.  Get Custom fit today. For your nearest PING stockist contact Sports Network Ltd. Ph: 0508 776 786

Tournament Director, Derek Drysdale, said, "At the final prize giving it was really pleasing to hear many of the competitors saying how much they’d enjoyed their week, as we tried to create a tournament that mixed both great golf and great fun, and it seems we did just that! "We are delighted that we have had many of last year’s entrants already registered to enter the tournament again," Derek said. NEWS FROM AROUND THE REGIONS

NORTHLAND 65TH ANNUAL LADIES ELAINE BLEDISLOE TOURNAMENT

The 2nd and 3rd September saw the Waitangi Golf Club host their Annual Elaine Bledisloe 72 -hole Ladies Matchplay Tournament and a division for 36 holes stroke play. This year for the first time the Tournament was held at beginning of September instead of the last weekend in July. The wish was for more daylight and a drier golf course. The first was achieved but unfortunately the Course was very wet and heavy under foot. The rain stayed away for most of the two days with just a couple of showers. There was a field of 40 in the matchplay and 14 in the strokeplay. The players came from Kaitaia, Keri Keri, Mangawhai, Ngunguru, Northern Wairoa, Northland,

Omaha, Sherwood Park, Waipu, Waitangi, Warkworth, Wellsford, Whangerei, Whangaroa. The top division this year was made up of 8 players with handicaps ranging from 0 – 8.3 handicap. The format was 18 holes strokeplay on Saturday morning and then matchplay in a seeded draw. The finalists in the Bledisloe Cup, Division One were Kylie Jacoby (Waipu) and Jenny Peters (Northland). The winner was Kylie Jacoby who also won the Bledisloe Cup in 2016. There were two more divisions playing 72 hole matchplay over the two days. The eventual winners of these divisions were: Division Two – Waitangi Cup - Setiny Pheng (a 13 year old from Whangerei) Division Three – Keri Keri Cup – Maggie Ackland (Ngunguru)

The fourth division was strokeplay – 18 holes each day playing for best net, gross and stableford. The winner was Jane Wubben (Waitangi). As usual there needs to be a large thank you given to the band of men and women who spent two days, some out on the course for hours, helping run this Tournament and also to our fantastic sponsors.

CLARKS BEACH MAKE THEIR MOVE

The second round of the COVIC finals were played in warm spring sunshine at the Clarks Beach Golf Club on Tuesday 22nd August. Considering a continued wet winter the fairways were pretty good with most sucker wet patches found in off the line locations. No surprise then that the straight hitters came to the fore with local Ron Wilkinson and Waiuku’s Mike Croucher returning scores nine under their handicaps. They led thirteen other players with 40-points or more in a field of 102 probably reflecting the tees being place forward and some friendly pin placements. In the SHIELD finals round 2, table leaders Hauraki spat the dummy ending up fifth with 136-points a 34-point player average. While Maramarua were again solid with 149-points (37.25 average) and claimed second place, it was the Clarks Beach home team who stunned the clubhouse with a whopping 164-points (41 average) to win the round. This result moves them from third to first equal overall on the finals table alongside Maramarua. The Waiuku team claimed third on the day with 147-points ahead of Wattle Downs in fourth on 144-points, Hauraki 5th with 136. Onewhero again rounded out the division with 119-points. Heading into the third round at Hauraki Golf Club on the 13th September the Shield places are now: 1st= Maramarua and Clarks

Beach (4); 3rd Hauraki (6); 4th= Hauraki and Waiuku (8); 6th Onewhero (12). In the PLATE finals round 2, leaders Huntly (143) also lost their table topping position to a resurgent Pakuranga (153) who have noticeably begun to roll out some of their stalwarts like Noel Bishop, in defence of their Plate title. Huntly who won last seasons Shield will keep them honest as will Pukekohe who finished second on the day with 149 points with Waikare again fourth on 142. Awhitu (137) and Maxwells-Manukau (132) helped make up the division. So after two rounds the Plate table places and points are: 1st Pakuranga (3); 2nd Huntly (4); 3rd Pukekohe (5); 4th Waikare (8); 5th Awhitu (10) and 6th Maxwells-Manukau (12). The CUP challenge by Waiuku was determined and promised much, but it eventually fizzled out against a Maramarua team that is determined to hold onto the Challenge Cup long term. While three of the games were close run affairs with only 1 or 2 matchplay points the difference, it was Maramarua’s Peter Thomson who again dominated his game over opponent Tim Howard for a 9-point (13.5 to 4.5) win. Maramarua’s Norm York beat Waiuku’s Jim Cotter 10 to 8, Ces York beat Cam Fleming (9.5 to 8.5) and Russ Ford beat Bob Anderson (9.5 to 8.5). The next round challenger is Clarks Beach, who will fancy their chances. The Craig Smith Pro-Shop Player of the Day award, could

Normally oversubscribed and supported by U19 boys/girls from Auckland, North Harbour and further afield, they are now taking applications for this year’s event. The club is delighted to inform the membership that Reuben Inglis had that rarest of “birds” on Sunday 27th August 2017 – an albatross! Reuben holed his 2nd shot from the fairway on the 18th – a Par 5 – giving him 6 Stableford points! What an incredible shot and extremely exciting for himself and his playing partners Cameron Young, Jonathan Latimer and Josh Muir. Well done Reuben – that handicap of 4.1 will be coming down even lower now!

About The Event The first tournament in 1950 was started almost by accident by Taumarunui member Mr McLeish with 22 players (all local). Over the years it attracted more interest and the top field was 161 players in 1999 representing clubs from Kaitaia to Wellington. The tourney is believed to be probably the biggest conducted annually in Australasia and over the years has attracted in excess of 3000 players. Taumarunui continues to attract lefties from all over the North Island as this annual event in September.

WAIKATO’S SMAIL TAKES VICTORY IN NORTH ISLAND STROKEPLAY

Waikato’s Charlie Smail (pictured) has recorded his first national title last month with a stellar two hole play-off victory in the North Island Strokeplay at the Waitangi Golf Club. After posting a 6under par 66 in round one, Charlie would post a 6over par 78 in round two and be some 9shots off the pace. Charlie gathered himself and rallied to shot a 4under par 68 in round three to be five shots behind the leader Jang Hyun Lee with a round to play. In the final round Charlie mixed 6 birdies with 3 bogeys to post a 3under par 69 score. Meanwhile Lee struggled to maintain his form shooting a 2over par 74. The players were sent down the 165m 9th hole where Charlie holed a clutch putt for par to halve the first hole. Back to the 9th tee they went where Charlie again made a great 3 which was enough to steal victory from the grasp of Lee. Other Waikato notables included Chris Charlton who finished 5th overall and Jordan Woodall who secured a top 10 finish.

BAY OF PLENTY WHANGAMATA GOLF MEN’S STROKEPLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

In the delayed final round of the Whan-

gamata Golf Men’s strokeplay championships there were some close finishes as well as some convincing margins. In the Senior Men’s division Kane Edwards nudged ahead of Bryan Grafas to win this title by three strokes. John Packham took out the Intermediate title by a considerable 13 strokes. The closest finish was in the Junior division as Peter Reekie held his nerve on the final hole to win by one stroke over Les “Rowdy” Dunn and Richard Abraham. The biggest wining margin was in the Junior B division with Rodger Flavell finishing strongly to win this title by 14 strokes. Back in 2002 as a fifteen year old Kane Edwards won his first Whangamata Senior Stroke play championship and he repeated this feat this year. Kane had rounds of 74, 77 and 76 to hold off Bryan Grafas who totaled 230 for 54 holes of golf. John Packman was unstoppable in the Intermediate division with rounds of 75, 79 and 81 for a total of 235. Runner up Steve Goddard totaled 248. This win for John was memorable as it was the first stroke play championship that he had competed in for some 28 years. In the Junior division three players, Peter Reekie, Les Dunn and Richard Abraham, were equal as they stood on the eighteenth tee. It was Peter who kept his focus as he hit a one over on this final hole while Les and Richard hit two overs. Junior B Champion Rodger Flavell with rounds of 109, 97, 99 for a total of 305 saw him comfortably ahead of Michael Jurisich with a total of 319. The Whangamata Golf club house was full of many stories after this final round of the strokeplay championships. These stories varied from “cramp in both my hands” to “the conditions were very difficult today.” History shows James Corlett as the most successful Senior strokeplay champion as he won the title in 7 consecutive seasons from 1983 to 1989 inclusive.

MANAWATU WANGANUI NEWS FROM LEVIN GOLF CLUB

The HMC Horowhenua Open was held recently at Levin. A sudden death play off was required to decide the title. Greg Shaw and Tony Chettleburgh were tied and it took two holes to decide the winner. Congratulations to Tony making him a back to back winner for the last 2 years. Regan McConaghty and Junior Tatana were jointly tied second. The Women’s event was won by Brydie Hodge and second equal were Darae Chung and Tania Hook.

with a 4 shot lead, but 4 late bogeys late in round 2 resulting in a 74 opened the door for McConaghty as he charged home with a couple of late birdies. Feildings, Liam Finlayson, shot rounds of 74 and 71 to finish a clear 3rd. Apiti’s Paul Early was the overall net winner with a net total of 140. In the womens division the visitor from Royal Wellington Zhuoyi Hu was the runaway victor with rounds of 72 and 77. Hu is just 12 years of age playing off a 3.1 handicap, so is a player to watch for the future. In second place 10 shots back was Levin’s, Brydie Hodge, (81, 78) and Manawatu teenager, Lily Griffin (78, 81). Another Manawatu teenager Mudra Lakhani, finished 4th a further shot back (81, 79). Wanganui’s Tara Raj withdrew after the morning round due to injury. Feilding’s Sharon Boxall was the net winner on 144. Many thanks to all the players that competed and to Palmerston North Golf Club for hosting the day. The course was in very good condition considering the recent weather conditions. Main trophy winners: Mens Open and Challenge Shield: Regan McConaghty (Manawatu GC) Mens Masters (over 40): Junior Tatana (Palmerston North GC) Junior Boys (U19): Kaleb Idemaru (Manawatu GC) Womens Open and Challenge Shield: Zhuoyi Hu (Royal Wellington GC) Womens Masters (over 40): Karen Wehipeihana (Palmerston North GC) Junior Girls (U19): Zhuoyi Hu

Manawatu Wanganui representative players Tara Raj and Greg Shaw both had Top 10 finishes at the NZ U19 champs played in Hastings last month. Tara Raj who plays for the Wanganui Golf Club finished in 7th place with consistent rounds throughout the event of 75, 76 & 77. The winner, Ayean Cho, finished on 14 under par, 5 shots ahead of the nearest rival, Amelia Garvey. For Raj, at just 14 years of age, this is her best finish in a national U19 event, and still has a number of years left in which to challenge for that title. Greg Shaw, was very much in contention for the boys title heading into the final round, after a second round 4 under 68. Just 1 shot behind eventual winner Mako Thompson heading into the final round, Shaw could not get things going in that round eventually carding a 78, to fall back into 8th place. Feilding’s Liam Finlayson playing in his final U19 event, was also close to the lead heading into the final round after 2 rounds of 73, however also could not get things going in the final round and carded a 79. Other local boys competing in the event were Ethan Dodds, Kaleb Idemaru, Bradley McSherry & Ryan Rooney all missing the cut after 2 rounds. Mudra Lakhani was the only other Manawatu Wanganui Girl competing and had rounds of 85, 86 & 84 to be back in 40th place.

The Manawatu Wanganui Strokeplay also known as the Challenge Cup was played last month in fine overhead conditions at Palmerston North Golf Club. Played over 36 holes the event is part of both the NZ Order of Merit and the Manawatu Wanganui Order of Merit. Manawatu’s Regan McConaghty shot rounds of 72 and 69 to take out the mens event by 1 shot over Palmerston North’s Junior Tatana. Tatana fired a 4 under 68 in the morning to go into the afternoon

The countback came down to games won and with 29.5 Pahiatua was just ahead of Feilding on 28, and Rangitikei on 27.5. The final match of the year was held on Monday at Castlecliff, with Pahiatua doing just enough to clinch the title after their 4 - 2 win over Feilding. CHANGES AHEAD AT THE PALMERSTON NORTH GOLF CLUB, BRIGHTWATER TERRACE

Golf clubs in New Zealand have and continue to be faced with the challenge of financial viability. Added to this has been the battle with the national trend of ageing golf participation and declining memberships so it is even more important that clubs consider all avenues of generating revenue. Over the last five years the Palmerston North Golf Club has faced many of these challenges and has put put plans in place to counter these challenges. Membership numbers remain stable and the club is now planning some new initiatives for the future. The golf club will take control of the retail golf shop here at Brightwater Terrace from the beginning of October. We are pleased to announce that at that time the club has employed Mr Hamish Campbell as the Golf Shop Manager. Hamish is a fully qualified PGA “AA” professional and a qualified greenkeeper. He trained under Glyn Delany of Total Golf in Nelson, a PGA “AAA’ professional and has had extensive experience in golf retail, competition and tournament organisation, coaching and managing junior and ladies golfing programmes. He is also an accomplished player and has won numerous professional and amateur events. His priority will be to efficiently manage the golf shop, golf competitions and be the first point of contact for members and visitors alike. He is very excited about this opportunity and is eager to start. On the 25th of September the shop will be closed to allow us to make the changes necessary. Once completed the retail shop will be open seven days per week

and be well stocked for all things golf. Members and visitors alike will be able to enjoy refreshments, a food offering and some good coffee as there will be an area inside the shop to sit, complete their score card after the round and Sky TV will beam out the latest sports and news coverage. There will also be a changing room to try out the latest golf and lifestyle gear. There is a growing demand for the hiring of golf carts. The club will be taking delivery of four new golf carts for hire and is building cart storage for members to store their own carts. There is a distinct lack of easily accessible driving ranges here in Palmerston North City. Our driving range is currently being upgraded and early in October members and visitors will be able to purchase range balls and hit away. We believe this service will be well patronised and will appeal to those who do not have the time for a round of golf or want to hone their game. Hamish and other professionals will be able to provide lessons here at the club and we invite everyone to contact us to book a lesson and check out the right gear to participate in this great game. The club has recently concluded a long term lease agreement with the Palmerston North City Council and we see them as key partner in the club being a truly community focussed facility. In addition extensive road repairs and beautification

of lakes are planned. The club recently installed a heating and cooling system within the club house and this has proved very popular with members and the many visitors who come to the club for corporate events, seminars, meetings and functions. The Palmerston North Golf Club is very excited about these changes which provide great value for members and visitors. Membership is open in a range of categories and we invite prospective members to come and talk to us about being part of the golf club.

CANTERBURY TIGHT CONTEST FOR WOODWARD CUP SEMI FINAL POSITIONS

The final round robin matches were played at Waitikiri last month with five teams in contention for the semi final positions. Christchurch and Russley battled it out for top of the table honours with seven of the eight matches going to at least the 17th hole. The final result was a half with Christchurch’s Mike Toeke, Richard Reed, JJ Love and John Sanders picking up the wins, while Hiroki Miya, Dominic Brettkelly, Ben Baker and Joe Falkner won their matches for Russley. Harewood finished with a half against Coringa with four individual matches halved from Matt McLean, Blair Dibley, Anuresh Chandra and Anthony Dale. This could of gone either way for Harewood, they had the chance to top qualify or if they had of lost they would have finished outside of the top four semi final positions. Harewood got the two valu-

able wins from Scott Manyweathers and Rob Gregory. Templeton also managed to book their spot in the semi final after beating Waitikiri 5-3. Tom Wilson, James Robb, Dan Laughton, Rhys Wilson and Paul Brightwell secured the all important points for the team to earn the final semi final position. After a dominant performance in rounds 6 and 7 Bottle Lake were looking to upset the top teams holding down the fourth position on the table heading into the final round. It was a tight battle that saw Pegasus have the edge over Bottle Lake winning 5-3 with Kazuma Kobori, Andrew Green, Peter Brinsdon and Brandon Parker getting the wins along with Matthew Burns and Richard Sinclair with halved matches. The Pegasus team performed well finishing in sixth position for their first outing in the Woodward Cup competition. The final match between Clearwater and Avondale was an important one with the winner of the match avoiding the Promotion/Relegation match to stay in the competition. Avondale produced a solid performance to beat Clearwater 5-3 and avoid sitting bottom of the table. Hayden Burns, Aaron Pablecheque, Rodney van Steenis and Haupai Puha won their matches with Nick Brennan and Tony Clemett halving their matches for Avondale.

The Stan Rich Salver was won jointly by Mike Toeke (Christchurch) and Tom Wilson (Templeton) both on eight wins.
