am always amused by the tee times for the first two days of the British Open. For last month’s Open Championship at Carnoustie in Scotland the first tee time was 6.35am. There’s nothing particularly special about that but it is early. However the tournament is held in the northern hemisphere summer and there is no problem with light at that time of the morning. But with a field of 156 players in groups of three and 11-minute intervals that means the last group did not tee off until 4.16pm. Now that is late. I don’t know what time the last groups on the first two days did finish but given that professional golfers are not the quickest to complete 18 holes, I would suggest it would have about 9pm, possibly later.
Golf from dawn to dusk It makes me wonder how do professionals prepare for such varied starting times. Remember that the pros do not turn up three minutes before start time like perhaps you or I. The pros will want to practice for about 45-60 minutes beforehand. So if they had a 6.35am start, they would want to be at the course at 5.30am. And depending on how close they are staying to the course it could mean being up at 4.30am. If that’s the case what time do you go to bed the night before? If you do go to bed early, will you sleep? If you playing a British Open, I would imagine sleep would not come easily. At the other end of the scale is the 4.16pm tee time. Do they have a late night at the pub the day before and hope they sleep in the next day. Once again, if
you are playing a British Open, I would presume sleeping-in would not come easily. For those with a 4.16pm start, how do they fill in time before it’s time to head to the golf course. They don’t want to get there too early and perhaps over-do the practice regime. Do they fill in time by watching golf on the television or do they dare not watch any golf and do something completely different? New Zealand golfer Ryan Fox had such a predicament in last month’s Irish Open. He finished up in the last group on the last day of the tournament. His tee off time was 2.45pm. That’s a lot of time to fill in, especially when you are right up with the tournament leader and a top chance to win. Sleeping-in, I would suggest, would be no chance. Filling-in the day before
tee time would be difficult. Let’s forget about the players for a moment. What about the organisers? Can you imagine running a golf tournament where the first tee time is 6.35am and the last group gets in about 9pm? That’s one long day. And then you repeat it for the second day. What time of the day do you like to tee off? That answer probably depends on whether it’s summer of winter but not always. For example at my golf club the tee booking sheet for Saturdays and Sundays is generally booked out from early morning until about 11am and then it tapers right off. Visitors usually take the tee times after 11am. In summer there are more golfers playing in the late afternoon but generally the early tee times are the ones booked out first.

HAWKES BAY GOLF CLUB
Greenfee players welcome. Ten minutes drive south-west of Hastings will bring you to one of the surprises of Hawkes Bay. The youngest of the four major golf courses in the Bay, the Hawkes Bay Golf Club, formerly the Flaxmere Golf Club, still has room to accommodate new members. The course, built on 142 acres of pumice land at the end of Valentine Road, 10km from Hastings town centre, was designed by Commander John Harris. It was opened in 1969 after an enthusiastic group of people (some of them not even golfers) had spent many hours picking up pumice and carrying buckets of water from a tanker to the newly planted trees. Today the course looks magnificent, with wide, tree-lined, N.Z. browntop and fescue fairways and large Pencross greens. Hawkes Bay Golf Club was among the first in the country to use this cultivar for all 18 holes. The tranquil setting has attracted much wildlife to join the members on their way around the course. Tui’s can often be heard in the trees, while at ground level the doves are a picture as they gather to watch the golfers amble by. There are also wild duck, plover, heron and the very noisy pied stilts, which regularly nest in and populate the water hazards about the course. In addition to the wildlife, the course offers magnificent views, with Te Mata peak to the east and the Northern Ruahines to the west. »» http://www.hawkesbaygolfclub.co.nz/

Five British Open wins — Peter Thomson GOLF NEWS
P
eter Thomson won The Open Championship in Britain five times. Only the legendary Harry Vardon, with six wins, has won more. Three of Thomson’s wins in the British Open were in consecutive years — 1954, 1955 and 1956 — and he is the only player to achieve such a feat. In one year on the seniors’ tour in the United States, in 1985, Thomson won an amazing nine times. That’s a record unlikely to be rivalled. Thomson won the Australian Open three times. He won the New Zealand Open nine times — nine is not a misprint. He won the national open of 10 different countries. It goes without saying that Thomson, who died on June 20 this year at the age of 88, was one of Australia’s greatest golfers. Thomson was born in Melbourne where the numerous courses on it’s sandbelt seemed to prepare him ideally for the many links venues in Britain. Thomson said he seemed to understand the bounce of the ball on a links course. “I liked playing on a course where the ball bounces,’’ Thomson once recalled. “As time went by, I found I had an advantage. Somehow, I comprehended that style of play, watching the ball bounce forward.’’ His five wins in the British Open came at Royal Birkdale (1954), St Andrews (1955), Royal Liverpool (1956), Royal Lytham (1958) and again at Birkdale (1965).
Peter Thomson.
The latter win was particularly satisfying for Thomson. Critics had suggested his earlier wins had been made easier as they came during a period when top American players declined the trip to Britain. But in 1965 the likes of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tony Lema, the greatest of the era, were in the field. Thomson was born in difficult times and remembered his mother struggling to pay the rent and his father, a signwriter, leaving the family. “I don’t know where my father went to, but he went out of sight,’’ he once recalled. “I was really brought up by my grandfather and my mother.’’ Years later, when he succeeded in making a living from the game, he bought the West Brunswick house that he had grown up in and gave it to his mother. Thomson gave much back to the game. He was president of
the Australian Professional Golfers’ Association for 32 years and was an architect of golf courses around the world. He was inducted into the Sport Australia hall of fame in 1985 for his contribution to golf and was elevated to “legend of Australian Sport” in 2001. He was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1998. He stood for election to the Victorian Parliament in 1982 as a Liberal Party candidate, but was defeated. In 1979 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his service to golf and in 2001 became an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for his contributions as a player and administrator and for community service. Thomson battled Parkinson’s disease for four years which saw him withdraw from public life in his last year.

R&A chief executive acknowledges Thomson R
oyal and Ancient chief executive Martin Slumbers was amongst the many to publicly express sympathy at the death of Peter Thomson. “Peter was a true gentleman and will be forever remembered throughout the world of golf as one of the great champions of our wonderful sport,’’ Slumbers said. ``He was a distinguished honorary member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews and will be sorely missed by all of us at The R&A. Our thoughts are with his family. "Peter gave me a number of very interesting and valuable thoughts on the game, how it has developed and where it is going which demonstrated his genuine interest and love of golf. “He was one of the most decorated and celebrated champion golfers in the history of The Open, winning the championship five times in total and becoming
6
the only golfer of the 20th century to lift the Claret Jug on three consecutive occasions between 1954 and 1956.’' Thomson’s fellow five-time champion golfer of the year Tom Watson said, “The world of golf has sadly lost arguably the greatest links player in history, Australian Peter Thomson. ``His record of winning five Open Championships combined with his finishing in The Open’s top 10 finishers an incredible 18 out of 21 years (1951-71) will go down in the annals of golf’s greatest achievements. We will miss him.” Thomson’s first appearance in The Open came in 1951 at Royal Portrush where he finished sixth and went on to produce arguably the finest stretch of results in the history of the Championship. In the next seven years, he was either first or second, winning on four occasions: Royal Birkdale in 1954, St Andrews in

1955, Royal Liverpool in 1956 and Royal Lytham & St Annes in 1958. Thomson went onto win a fifth time in 1965, defeating Christy O’Connor senior by two strokes to claim his second Open Championship victory at Royal Birkdale. His 89 professional wins came all around the world including six PGA Tour titles, one European Tour title and a victory on the Japan Golf Tour. Thomson was president of the Australian PGA from 1962 to 1994 and was a winning non-playing captain of the international team that defeated the United States in the 1998 Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne. In 1982, he was elected an honorary member of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, where he played an active role.

Fox earns more than $1 million for second in Irish Open NEWS
R
yan Fox may have narrowly missed out on a first European Tour title in the Irish Open but there were two consolations to ease the frustration. The Auckland golfer had an eight-foot putt on the 18th green at Ballyliffin Golf Club last month that would have handed him victory in the fourth Rolex Series event of the season but he agonisingly saw it slip by on the high side of the hole. That saw Fox and Scottish golfer Russell Knox tied for the lead at the conclusion of the regulation four rounds and they headed back out to the 18th hole for a playoff to determine a winner. Fox had the advantage after their second shots. Fox was about eight feet from the hole while Knox was about
40 feet away. But oddly enough Knox was in a very similar position to the 40-foot putt he had holed to tie Fox for the lead at the end of 72 holes. And, amazingly, with that prior knowledge, Knox sunk the putt again. Fox still had a very good chance to extend the playoff. But it wasn’t to be. Fox’s putt ringed the hole and did not drop. Fox would have felt robbed. But the good news was that his second placing gained him a start in the British Open two weeks later and that he earned a very healthy prize. The Irish Open is one of the richer events on the European Tour with total prizemoney of $US7 million and Fox earned the equivalent of
$NZ1.14 million. Fox, 31, was pleased to seal his passage to The Open Championship at Carnoustie, the season’s third major championship. He had done the same 12 months previously at the Irish Open when he finished in a tie for fourth. “I really enjoy playing in The Open and Carnoustie is one of the best courses in the world,” Fox said. “I’m excited to get there and a little bit nervous to see how it plays but I’m very much looking forward to it. “It’s always nice to play links golf in the run up to an Open and I love the challenge of it. The rough might be a bit more difficult than here so we’ll see what the conditions are like when we get to Carnoustie.”

Charles Tour increases to six tournaments a year N ew Zealand’s professional golf circuit has increased from five to six tournaments a year. The latest addition to the Jennian Homes Charles Tour is the Christies Flooring Mount Open which will be held at the Mount Maunganui Golf Club in Tauranga. That means Tauranga will now host two Charles Tour events, the other being the Carrus Open at the Tauranga Golf Club. The Carrus Open is in April. A date has yet to be confirmed for the Christies Flooring Mount Open but it is likely to be in December, 2019. It will carry prizemoney of $50,000 which is the same as the other Charles Tour tournaments. New Zealand Golf general manager Dave Mangan was pleased to welcome the new venue and what the opportunity provided for New Zealand golfers. “New Zealand Golf is very excited to welcome a new venue onto the Jennian Homes Charles Tour,’’ Mangan said. ``The Mount Maunganui Golf Club has a proud history of hosting New Zealand Amateur Championships as well as the New Zealand PGA championship. “Raising a prize purse of $50,000 for the tournament is a significant challenge, so we’re fortunate that the club have a great supporter in Christies Floorings.’’ Mangan added a sixth New Zealand tournament was another important stepping stone for the country’s top amateurs and up-and-coming professionals. “The Jennian Homes Charles Tour represents an important part in the development of our elite amateurs and rookie professionals, so having a further event for them to develop their skills as they work towards their golf-
Hayden Beard, Michael Williams, Dave Gerrand and Kieran Muir.
ing aspirations is an important part of what New Zealand Golf wants to do.” Christies Floorings chief executive Dave Gerrand, who has played a big role in giving New Zealand golfers another chance to challenge themselves against the country’s best, was looking forward to the new partnership and how the tournament could benefit Mount Maunganui. “It is a pleasure to be able to assist in bringing top quality golf to the Mount Maunganui Golf Club for members to enjoy,” Gerrand said. Tauranga mayor Greg Brownless added he was delighted to see another top tournament for the city.
“It’ll be another great opportunity for our community to view some of New Zealand’s top golf golfers, playing the sport at its highest level in New Zealand’s fifth-largest city,” Brownless said. “Tournaments like this play a key role in our city. They build community spirit and local pride, they promote our region and boost the local economy. Council proudly supports the development of golf in New Zealand and is committed to attracting world-class tournaments to the city.” Mountt Maunganui’s new general manager Mike Williams has gained great experience coming from the Manawatu Golf Club where he host-
ed four Jennian Homes Charles Tour events, as he looks to create an equally successful event at the Mount Maunganui Golf Club. “It’s exciting to bring four-round professional golf back here after its rich history of hosting the New Zealand PGA Championship in the 60s and 70s,” Williams said. “We hope to bring an event the club can be proud of. It is great to have Christies Floorings onboard as Dave [Gerrand] is a long-time member and supporter of the Mount. He is local and a local business so it is a great fit for us.”

Eisenhower and Espirito Santo Trophy teams named
N
ew Zealand’s teams for the World Amateur Teams’ Championships have been named. The championships will be held in Ireland at the Carton House Golf Club in Maynooth. The men’s event, which plays for the Eisenhower Trophy, is from September 5-8. The week before the women’s event, which plays for the Espirito Santo Trophy, is from August 29-September 1. The teams are: Eisenhower Trophy team: Daniel Hillier (Wellington), Denzel Ieremia (Iowa State/Waikato), Kerry Mountcastle (Wellington). Espirito Santo Trophy team: Wenyung Keh (University of Washington/Auckland), Julianne Alvarez (University of Washington/Wellington), Amelia Garvey (USC/Canterbury). New Zealand won the Eisenhower Trophy in 1992 and Hillier does not hide his hopes the feat can be repeated this year. “I love representing New Zealand and it would be great for this team to join our 1992 team and have our name on the trophy as well,’’ Hillier said. Hillier’s world ranking had climbed to No 25 following three tournaments he played in Britain and Europe in June. He failed to make the cut in the first of those events, the St Andrews Trophy at St Andrews in Scotland, but his form improved in the following two events. The second event was the British Amateur at Royal Aberdeen in Scotland in which Hillier made the final 64 but was beaten in his first round match. Then it was across to The Netherlands for the European Amateur in which Hillier recorded his best performance to finish seventh, just three shots from the winner. Hillier said those experiences should stand him well in Ireland. “I had never been to this side of the world, so to experience links golf in Scotland at the (British) Amateur Championship was great and will hopefully help me to feel more comfortable in Ireland.” Hillier is joined in the three-man Eisenhower team by the United States-based Denzel Ieremia and fellow Wellingtonian, Kerry Mountcastle. Mountcastle closed off the domestic season in fine style with victories in the New Zealand Strokeplay Championship at Paraparaumu Beach before beating the professionals at the Carrus Open in Tauranga, for his maiden title on the Jennian Homes Charles Tour. Ieremia has played his way into the team while completing his degree at Iowa State University. He will bring
three years of international competitive experience and a number of standout performances for his college team to Ireland. As for the Espirito Santo Trophy team, it will be Keh who will be hoping to repeat her form from this year’s inaugural Women’s Asia-Pacific Championship in Singapore where she forced her way into a play-off on the Sunday. That form, along with the experience of fellow University of Washington team mate Julianne Alvarez and the big-hitting prowess of Amelia Garvey, should see the kiwis well positioned to make a run at the Espirito Trophy. While Keh’s performance in Singapore saw her world amateur ranking rise to a career-high 79, Alvarez and Garvey have both carved out their own paths. After winning multiple titles in New Zealand, Alvarez has had a number of successes in the US, while Garvey has already made her mark at University of Southern California in the six months she has been there. Keh is looking forward to the challenge that they will face in Ireland. “College golf has set us up well for when we get to pull on the national colours. We play a lot of team golf over here in the states, with the highlight being winning the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) title with Julianne. We are both super excited to play for New Zealand again.” New Zealand Golf high performance manager Gregg Thorpe is looking forward to seeing what these players can achieve in Ireland. “The selectors have picked two strong teams, each of whom have already shown how well they can play and who on their day can challenge the very best,’’ Thorpe said. “The team golf format is an interesting one with only two of the three team scores counting each day. History shows those that if one or two team members can do something special anything can happen. “There is no doubt the intensity of an event like the World Amateur Teams Championship is a step up for everyone, but these players all have the skill and experience to thrive in this environment.” The teams will be supported by Liz McKinnon, Jay Carter and Bryce Hamer.

HOMES NEAR GOLF RESORTS ARE MORE VALUABLE
H
omes within golf resorts are worth 19 percent more on average than equivalent properties outside resorts, a new study has revealed. The most valued properties within golf resorts are those with golf course views, which benefit from a 9.5 percent price premium compared to properties without course views. The study was conducted by European Tour Properties, a global network of 27 world class golf resorts and courses, with results based on a sample of nine golf resorts and the completed sale transactions of 500 plots, villas, townhouses and apartments during 2017. The sample includes leading international resorts Quinta do Lago in Portugal, Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort (France), Finca Cortesin Hotel Golf & Spa (Spain), Jumeirah Golf Estates (United Arab Emirates) and Black Mountain Golf Club in Thailand. Sandra Ruttle, real estate consultant at European Tour Properties, said: “From the perspectives of both developers and property buyers, being able to evaluate golf property prices and show their resilience is important in making informed investment decisions, which is why we undertook this study. “The resorts surveyed include some of the best known and most successful case studies of international golf resort developments, so the findings are relevant in terms of what they tell us about the market today. And it is clear that properties on golf resorts, especially those with views over the golf course, generate price premiums.” Asked what proportion of the 19 percent golf resort premium was attributable specifically to a tournament quality golf course versus leisure amenities, the resorts estimated more than half of the additional value (54 percent) was attributable to golf, with 46 percent attributable to leisure. The study also confirmed that the majority of buyers of golf resort properties are not golfers. In fact, more than two-thirds of home owners (67 percent) are non-golfers. However, there are some exceptions, notably Black Mountain in Thailand where 98 percent of property owners were golfers. Overall, buyers of properties at golf resorts tend to be international rather than local or national, with 84 percent of purchases made by overseas buyers. The nine venues in the European Tour Properties network included in the study were: • Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort, France • Quinta do Lago, Portugal • Troia Resort, Portugal • PGA Catalunya Resort, Spain • Finca Cortesin Hotel Golf & Spa, Spain • Jumeirah Golf Estates, Dubai, UAE • Black Mountain Golf Club, Thailand • Bom Sucesso Resort, Portugal • Estonia Golf & Country Club, Estonia Ruttle added: “With urbanisation growing, owning a property on a prestigious golf resort is a much sought after investment which carries a premium reflecting the service, security and integration with other on-site leisure facilities – all key assets in the minds of international buyers. “The vast majority of venues within the network are located close to an airport, which increases the appeal of the locations for both property owners and people on holiday.”

Junior Presidents’ Cup to precede main event in Melbourne GOLF NEWS
R
oyal Melbourne Golf Club has been confirmed as the venue for next year’s Junior Presidents' Cup. It will be held from December 8-9 and will precede the 2019 Presidents Cup, which will also be contested at Royal Melbourne Golf Club later that week. The 24 best junior boys from the United States and countries outside Europe, will gather for a two-day competition between the two teams of 12 to kick-off Presidents' Cup week. The US team captured the inaugural Junior Presidents Cup in 2017 at Plainfield Country Club in New Jersey, by a score of 14-10, with three Americans going undefeated in the three sessions. David Toms led the US team, while South African Trevor Immelman cap-
tained the International team. Honorary captains Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player were on hand during the singles matches to provide added encouragement and inspiration and distribute medals to both teams. Three Australians – Joshua Armstrong, Fred Lee and Karl Vilips – all qualified for the International team. “It was a great experience – I learnt a lot out of it,” said Armstrong. “Having the 2019 edition at Royal Melbourne is a great initiative to keep everyone at the same venue. It’ll draw some more crowds for the juniors, which would be a great thing and be a great build up to the Presidents Cup.” Lee was also thrilled to be a part of the 2017 edition in New Jersey. “When you get chosen to represent your coun-
RYDER CUP VENUE FOR 2028 IS NAMED T
he Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) of America has announced that Hazeltine National Golf Club in the United States will host the 47th Ryder Cup in 2028. Hazeltine was the site of the US Ryder Cup team’s 17-11 victory in 2016 and in 2028 it will become the first American venue to host a second Ryder Cup. Hosting two Ryder Cups is not so uncommon in England. There has been four English courses host multiple Ryder Cups. They are The Belfry (1985, 1989, 1993, 2002), Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club (1961, 1977), Royal Birkdale Golf Club (1965, 1969) and Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club (1933, 1937). PGA of America president Paul Levy said he was delighted to announce the Ryder Cup would return to the state of Minnesota at the neighbouring cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, known as the Twin Cities. “The 2016 Ryder Cup was an incredible event both on and off the course,’’ Levy said. “We owe its success to, among others, the membership of Hazeltine National and the gracious hospitality put forth by the people of Minnesota. “We’re delighted to announce the Ryder Cup’s return to the Twin Cities in 2028, when we will again celebrate the game of golf on a global stage.” Designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1962 and enhanced by his son, Rees Jones, in 2002 and 2005, Hazeltine National Golf Club takes its name from nearby Lake Hazeltine. The par-72 layout blends the rolling hills, lakes, mature woods and prairies of the American upper mid-west and is consistently ranked among America’s 100 greatest golf courses. Hazeltine began its tradition of hosting major championships more than 50 years ago. Beyond the most recent Ryder Cup, it has hosted the US Women’s Open (1966, 1977), US Open (1970, 1991), US Senior Open (1983) and the PGA Championship (2002, 2009). Hazeltine National Golf Club president Bob Fafinski said: “Hazeltine National is elated to make history as the first golf club in America to host a Ryder Cup more than once. “On behalf of our entire membership and the people of Minnesota, we are grateful to the PGA of America for bringing the Ryder Cup back and for its service to the game of golf. We look forward to delivering another world class event for golf fans throughout the world.” Hazeltine will host its third women’s major championship, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship from June 20-23 of next year.

try and play against the world’s top juniors, you really identify the weaknesses as well as the strengths in your game,” said Lee. “For me it was a real eye opener and encouraging knowing that I had some game against the top juniors in the world.” Tiger Woods and Ernie Els are headed to Melbourne as captains of the US and International teams, respectively, for the 2019 Presidents' Cup. The star duo will be joined by the biggest names in golf for the team match play competition featuring 24 of the world’s top golfers – 12 from the United States and 12 for the international team, which excludes Europe. The Presidents' Cup is held every two years, and since 1996 has alternated
between United States and international venues. It will be third time the event has been played at Royal Melbourne. The Presidents' Cup is unique in that there is no purse or prize money. Players are not paid for their participation, but each competitor allocates an equal portion of the funds generated to charities of his choice. Since the event’s inception, more than $US49.1 million has been raised for charity from event proceeds, as well as contributions made on behalf of the Presidents’ Cup, including a record charitable donation of $US10.7 million from the 2017 event alone.
More than 32 million play golf annually in the United States
he National Golf Foundation (NGF), the American-based trade organisation that works with every sector within the golf industry, has released its new golf industry report, a comprehensive state-of-the-industry overview. The report compiles many of the game’s key data points in a single publication and is intended to provide the most holistic view of the business of golf and the health of the game to stakeholders and the media. The report includes the latest NGF data on golf participation, engagement, rounds-played, golf course supply and development, retail supply, golf equipment sales, and golf’s reach in the United States. Golf’s participation base in the US remains stable, with an estimated 23.8 million people who played golf on a course in 2017 the same as a year earlier. Another 8.3 million played exclusively offcourse at facilities like driving ranges or indoor simulators, putting the game’s overall participant pool at more than 32 million. The number of US non-golfers who said they are now very interested in playing at a golf course hit a new measured high, at 14.9 million. This represents a 16 percent jump over 2016 and the continued increase in latent demand helped boost the number of golf newcomers (2.6 million) for the fourth year in a row. There were 456 million rounds of golf played in 2017 in the US, an average of 19 rounds per golfer. Total golf course supply declined by 1.5 percent, with the opening of 15.5 new 18-hole equivalent golf courses and 205.5 course closures, in a continuation of a correction in supply and demand. The US remains the best-supplied golf market in the world with 14,794 facilities, 75 percent of which are open to all players.
August 2018
Other 2017 highlights from the golf industry report are: • There are almost 20 million committed golfers who account for approximately 95 percent of all rounds-played and spending. • The average price paid for an 18-hole round at public golf facilities is $US34. • Juniors (6-17) and young adults (18-34) comprise more than 37 percent of all on-course golfers, with 2.7 million junior participants and 6.2 million young adults. These groups make up 69 percent of the off-course (driving ranges etc) only participant pool. • There are 5.8 million women who played golf on a course in 2017. Women account for 24 percent of the on-course golfer base and 41 percent of off-course only play. • Newcomers to golf are increasingly diverse: 35 percent are female, 26 percent are non-Caucasian and 70 percent are under the age of 35. • The number of golfers aged 65-and-over increased 13 percent to 3.6 million in 2017. This number will continue to increase as the balance of baby boomers reach 65. • Golf’s total reach of 97.6 million people in the US is comprised of 32.1 million total golf participants plus 65.5 million who watched and/or read about golf, but didn’t play on or off course. This represents about one-third of the US population (age six-plus) and is 3 percent greater than 2016. For further information and context on the 2018 golf industry report, visit The Q (thengfq.com). “We’re excited to present a single state-of-the-industry report, encompassing golf’s key metrics, on behalf of our members and the industry we serve,” NGF President and CEO Joe Beditz said. “This information is enhanced and driven by a significant increase in our investment in consumer research.”

GOLFCOACHING
Ask the right questions, get the right clubs By Anthony Barkley NZPGA Professional
A
s a club pro I loved the club fitting element and now I have been out for a while I do miss it a lot. I loved the fact that everyone was different in regards to their fit. People’s swings are all different, short, long, smooth, fast plus all bodies are different. For me it became an art to break down all these facts. It was also crucial to create rapport with clients and as I move into the real estate industry I see it’s even more important. We are just dealing with a much bigger investment. But I used to love this side of things and I look forward to this in my new path but I thought I would remind you of things you should know if you are going to get club fitting soon. Things to ask: If you have a brand in mind, that’s all good but do have an open mind to maybe different brands and models. Ask
leading questions (do research first) as to what they think is the best on the market. Listen carefully to answers as I am not saying they will lie but in a shop they will have favourites or perhaps can only supply certain brands. This is normal but if they slam another brand they don’t have, be aware. Asking things like what club suits me should be answered with let’s see what happens through our fitting. Presumption because of age, size and shape should not be made until your swing is analysed. Analysis of the swing is the most fun. You definitely need to get the stats through testing on a Flightscope of similar device. I would say that if the person/ location you are getting fitted at doesn’t offer this, go elsewhere. Its part of a comprehensive fitting service and if you have this data it just adds more credibility that the fitting is correct. This method is also
great to compare apples to apples as the data is there for you to see. I would ask to get a copy of the data although I must admit I couldn’t do this easily in my studio. There are a few variables we look at from the data that are most important. Ball speed is one key area as this tells us how fast the ball comes off the face (the faster the more distance). Generally we see the same swing speed throughout different models of clubs with irons but ball speed may vary. Just means you are getting more benefit from that clubs technology. Club head speed is important to distinguish shaft flex and although there are 5 main ones (Lady, Senior, Reg, stiff and extra stiff) you can get these adjusted to suit if your swing speed sits between flexes. I used to use a flex chart from KZG that gave me where a client sat in their 12 flexes and helped me to decide if they needed a shaft to be made more firm
than stiff for example. Other key variables are dispersion, carry distance, smash factor (timing) and I always liked to check height and of course spin. Numbers are great but there are also the swing characteristics that need to be considered as well as injuries which the fitter should have very good knowledge off. All these things take time so an efficient club fitter may take an hour for a set, sometimes longer so have some spare time. Remember to try and support your professional if you have one as they are the experts in the industry and are there primarily to help members. Give them first chance and if you want another person to do the fitting do it. But pay for this service and order through your professional and get them to take the fee of the price. I hope that is some help for any of you looking at new clubs for 2018.

Plastic water bottles banned from golf carts
S
entosa Golf Club in Singapore is reaffirming its commitment to the environment and its keep it green agenda by announcing that it no longer permits the use of plastic water bottles on its golf carts, instead favouring the installation of a number of water stations on course. The reduction of its plastic footprint, which is expected to equate to 150,000 water bottles each year, is a continuation of it’s pioneering efforts to drive environmental awareness and build upon already established eco-friendly agronomic and operational practices. “Every little helps,” said Andy Johnston, general manager and director of agronomy at Sentosa. “We are continually monitoring every aspect of our agronomy programmes and operations to ensure we are doing all we can to work in harmony with the environment. “The decision to remove all plastic bottles from golf
GOLFCOACHING
carts will allow us to considerably reduce our plastic usage and take another positive step in demonstrating what is possible if golf clubs commit to simple measures.” Sentosa’s agronomic practice has long been considered at the forefront of the golf industry. Continual efforts have been made in developing the most sustainable methodologies and maintenance programmes, demonstrated best in the reconstruction of the New Tanjong course. Over the course of an extensive redesign, Sentosa took a number of steps to reduce the environmental impact, including the creation of a temporary nursery to facilitate the relocation and replanting of more than 260 palm trees, the installation of six reservoirs-cum-water features to ensure self-sufficient irrigation and the reuse of concrete from old cart paths as the basis
of all new paths. “The future of the golf industry requires clubs, owners and managers to understand more about what can be done to neutralise and enhance the environment,” said Johnston. “I hope that Sentosa serves as an inspiration in this respect as we continue to find new ways to benefit the environment. From taking food wastage and working it back into the eco-system to introducing bees into the community, there is a long list of small changes we are implementing and we hope other clubs can make that, when combined, can have a lasting and sustainable impact.” Sentosa Golf Club is located on Sentosa Island, which attracts millions of visitors each year. The club is home to The R&A’s Asia Pacific office and is the headquarters of the Asian Tour.

You’re a better golfer than you think you are By Ian Hardie NZPGA Professional
I
was interested to read an article in last month’s Golfer Pacific about Omokoroa Golf Club greenkeeper, Nathan Kerr spending two weeks in the USA helping out at the Wells Fargo Championship PGA Tour event earlier this year. The most amazing thing to me was that for the duration of the event, he was a part of the 85 person grounds team that’s right 85 people were working on that golf course day and night just to have it in the right condition for a single week long PGA Tour event! Considering that the average golf course in NZ has maybe one to two ground staff and knowing that a lot of golf courses in the country don’t have any paid employees looking after them, I got to thinking just how different, the conditions that the PGA Tour events are played in are from the conditions that the average golfer in NZ plays in. You may be thinking, what does that have to do with golf coaching? Well, one of the more common things I’ve observed over the years is that a lot of golfers watch golf on television in the hope that they will discover some tip, idea or secret move that will help to improve their golf game. On the face of it, watching the best golfers in the world playing the game that you are looking to improve your skills at seems like a logical thing to do, however it seldom works in practice and usually, has the opposite effect of making the golfer worse over time. The main reason for this, is just how different the conditions and support that
the professional golfers you see playing golf on television have, as opposed to the reality of what golf is for the thousands of golfers around NZ who aren’t professional golfers. ‘Real golfers’ like you deal with massive variations in the golf courses they play throughout the year, due to weather, seasonal factors and course maintenance. The professionals on television don’t seem to play on recently cored greens, any dew on the greens seems to have disappeared by the time they play, while temporary tees and greens don’t seem to feature on television much either. As you are probably aware, golf is a much easier game to play when the condition of the course is good and the weather is helping the golfer, which is what the professionals on television have most of the time as their circuit moves location depending on the season. What about the pre-game preparations of the professionals on television? They must be the same as a ‘real golfer’s pre-game preparations of turning up to the golf course a few minutes before they play, having a few practice swings, chips and putts then teeing off – right? Well, not exactly. The first thing that most of the professionals that you see playing golf on television will do before each round is an hour or two work out and their pre-game stretches with their own personal trainer or physiotherapist, before they fuel up their body with the food and drinks that their personal nutritionist has recommended. Are you doing that prior to playing each round, I wonder?
Do you have your teacher or coach standing beside you on the practice range watching and adjusting your basics and golf action, while you go through your daily hour and a half pre game warm-up which covers all parts of your game including hitting many drives, bunker shots, chips and putts? Are you tuning all the weight settings or changing shafts on your clubs to produce that extra yard or two of distance off the tee or to make sure that the slight fade you have been hitting while warming up with your driver (hitting 300 metre drives of course) actually becomes a draw on the course prior to heading to the first tee shot of the day? It’s starting to look like the professionals on television have a slight advantage over the ‘real golfer’ when it comes to how prepared they are to hit that first tee shot exactly where they want to. Which brings me to the caddy that the professionals on television have for every round of golf that they play. Does your caddy stock your golf bag full of the two dozen or so brand new golf balls, the dozen new golf gloves and of course your ‘sharpie’ for signing all the autographs after your game? Is your golf bag usually stocked with all of the carefully measured and prepared drinks and snacks that your nutritionist has worked out that you need for this round? Has your caddy updated the topographical course guide and map with today’s flag positions and done all the calculations to the lay-up points on the holes that you had worked out with them during the practice rounds?
You don’t have all of that done for you by your caddy before you play each round - how on earth do you play golf? For most ‘real golfers’ the answer is quite well, when you compare the conditions and level of support that you have each game to that of the PGA Tour pro. As you can see, if you attempt to improve your game by watching golf on television, it’s unlikely that you will have anywhere near the same level of preparation and support before every game, which means it’s unlikely that you will be able to apply something that you may have seen on television to your golf game with any great effect. I’d like you to take a minute here and give yourself a ‘pat on the back’ as you really are a better golfer than you think you are to have the scores you have in the conditions that you play in. One more thing, you might be interested to know that the professionals that play golf on television generally don’t watch other professionals in the hope that they will discover a ‘tip’ to help their golf game. So, if you’re not convinced that you really are a better golfer than you think you are or you would like to improve you golf game in some area, instead of spending hours watching golf on television for that elusive ‘tip’ that you think you can apply to your golf game. Head out to the practice area and work on your golf game or if you need some support to know what to do to improve and don’t have a golf coach that you go to regularly, you can find one at www.pga. org.nz/find-a-pga-pro. Barry Rhodes is an enthusiastic, high handicap golfer, resident in Dublin, Ireland, who developed an interest, then a fascination, and now an obsession with the rules of golf. Rhode’s relationship with the rules began in 2000 with his participation in the interclub rules of golf quiz competitions, organised by the Royal & Ancient for golf clubs in Britain and Ireland. This then led to him writing articles, running quizzes and delivering presentations on the rules at a variety of golf club and corporate functions. In March 2008, Rhodes became the first person to achieve a 100 percent correct mark on the public advanced rules of golf course examination, run by the PGA. In 2015, Rhodes received a pass with distinction in the R&A’s level three, tournament administrators and referees school examination, the highest certification awarded. Since the end of 2008 Rhodes has written a regular blog on barryrhodes.com. A recent blog was on the antics of Phil Mickelson which follows:
Phil Mickelson had a better option W
hen I finished writing my previous blog, less than two weeks ago, little did I imagine that I would be writing so soon about Phil Mickelson’s professed knowledge of the rules of golf. Let me remind you what he said at that time, during an interview with Curtis Strange on Fox Sports, regarding his hit of the ball when it was threatening to run off the green in the US Open. “I don’t mean disrespect by anybody I know it’s a two-shot penalty. And at that time, I just didn’t feel like going back and forth and hitting the same shot over. I took the two-shot penalty and moved on. It’s my understanding of the rules. I’ve had multiple times where I’ve wanted to do that. I just finally did. But I know it’s a two-shot penalty, hitting a moving ball. I tried to hit it as close to the hole as I could to make the next one. And you take the two shots, and you move on.” As many subscribers have reminded me, if Phil’s understanding of the rules was as good as he claimed, he would almost certainly have been better off waiting for his ball to come to rest behind the bunker, then picking it up and replacing it on the putting green where he had just putted from, for a single penalty stroke, under rule 28a or rule 27-1. I have mentioned this option many times in previous
blogs, including this one, titled ‘stroke and distance penalty’. Following another incident just two weeks later, on Sunday at The Greenbrier Classic, there is more evidence that perhaps Phil’s understanding of the rules is not quite as good as he thinks. He made an elementary mistake that in my experience few amateur golfers would make, getting him a penalty of two strokes. The circumstance was that he had teed his ball on the seventh hole when he noticed that there were wisps of fescue grass on his intended line of play, which was going to be a low stinger. So he walked forward off the teeing area and trampled down the offending grasses. When he returned to his ball, something clicked and he said, presumably to his caddie and brother, Tim Mickelson; “I’m not sure that what I just did is legal...... I’ll ask somebody.” As was later confirmed to him by Robbie Ware, a course rules official, his action was a breach of rule 13-2. These are the relevant parts of that rule; A player must not improve or allow to be improved: ... his line of play or a reasonable extension of that line beyond the hole ... by any of the following actions: ... moving, bending or breaking any-

thing growing or fixed ... creating or eliminating irregularities of surface, ... However, the player incurs no penalty if the action occurs: ... in creating or eliminating irregularities of surface within the teeing ground When the official returned in the rules car to confirm the penalty Phil asked him; “Had I picked up my tee and moved it to the side where it didn’t affect the shot, I would have been okay?” Robbie Ware's reply was incorrect; “No problem, it’s just when it’s on... when it’s on your line of play.” Phil cut in; “I had that thought and thought why don’t I move it just in case... and I didn’t, so okay.” Err no, they were both wrong. Once the original line of play had been improved Phil could not have avoided the penalty by moving his ball to another part of the teeing ground before making his stroke. It is decision 13-2/14 that is relevant in this circumstance; Question: On the teeing ground, a player broke off a branch of a tree which was interfering with his swing. The player maintained that such action was not a breach of rule 13-2 because his ball was not yet in play. Was the player correct?

And Here!
Answer: No. The player was in breach of rule 13-2 for improving the area of his intended swing. Although rule 13-2 allows a player to eliminate irregularities of surface on the teeing ground, it does not allow him to break a branch interfering with his swing. The penalty would apply even if the player, before playing his next stroke, re-teed elsewhere on the teeing ground – see decision 13-2/24. Note that had the fescue, or any other irregularity of surface, been within the teeing ground it could have been tapped down or removed, without penalty. After this event, on its social media accounts, the PGA Tour tried to emphasise the positive by saying that this was another incidence of a player calling a penalty on himself. That is not quite how I saw it. Unfortunately, this episode provided yet another example of TV golf commentators, who presumably make a good living from their chosen profession, continuing to embarrass themselves by not having a clue about the correct ruling for occurrences that are just slightly out of the ordinary. Surely, they have enough off-air time that they could usefully spend brushing up their rules knowledge. The mind boggles as to what it will be like next year when the new modernised rules come into effect.

NORTH HARBOUR NORTH GOLF
By Kevin Tregunno kevin@harbourgolf.co.nz
Member clubs of North Harbour Golf Association and Golf Northland have voted by majority for the formation of a new amalgamated association called North Golf Association Incorporated (aka. North Golf). An Executive team is currently being voted in to look after the business side of the Association, to help grow the game within our districts. Whilst North Golf will only get single association voting rights on the NZ Golf stage, the other provinces in New Zealand have voted to allow North Golf to continue with its two representative teams of North Harbour and Northland in the Interprovincial championships and any other inter-district matches. Harbour Golf and Northland will continue as brands under North Golf, each retaining its existing Pennants competition structures, overseen by separate Golf Management Committees comprising of delegates from the member clubs within the current district boundaries. These Management Committees will have a focus on the representative and competition golf.

AUCKLAND AUCKLAND GOLFERS (BOTH PROFESSIONALS AND AMATEURS) SHINING ON THE WORLD STAGE By Andrew Leventis andrewleventis312@gmail.com
It has been so exciting to see the strong recent play by Ryan Fox, Auckland’s former number one amateur as he is firmly establishing himself in the professional ranks and competing (and beating) the best players in the world. Following on from his 2nd place finish (losing in a playoff to Russell Knox) in the Irish Open he then placed T6 in the Scottish Open the
very next week. These fantastic finishes have propelled him into the Open Championship at Carnoustie (along with fellow New Zealander Michael Hendry). Well done to Ryan as he continues to climb the world rankings and show just how large a golf game he has. Howick Golf Club member Jimmy Zheng has recently won the prestigious 6th Ryan Moore Championship played at the Oakbrook Golf Club in Washington USA by two shots. Jimmy led from start to finish opening with a 5 under par 66, scoring a 2 under par 69 in the second round, and closing the tournament out with an even par 71. Well done Jimmy! Akarana Golf Club Member Rianne Li won the FCG International Junior Golf Championship played at the St Mark Golf Club in California. Rianne won the Girls 11-12 Division scoring two rounds of 75 to win by one shot. Congratulations on this amazing achievement the golfing future of this young lady seems very bright indeed.

HUNTLY-WAITERIMU WIN 2018 COVIC JJJ CUP
Another successful annual COVIC mid winter’s day out was held at the Ngaruawahia Golf Club on the 6th July 2018. The JJJ Ambrose Cup Tournament was held on a beautiful sunny day under clear blue skies and no wind, with 96 men and women players present to make up 32 teams of three. The winning club was the Huntly-Waiterimu entry who took out the Jackson-Jones Justice Cup with a combined best two team aggregate net score of 117.333. Second were defending champions Clarks Beach (125.847) and third Pukekohe (126.367). Other places were Maramarua (130.084), Onewhero (130.216), Wattle Downs (133.016), Waikare (135.550), Ngaruawahia (135.683), Hauraki (141.833), Waiuku (146.033), Awhiti (dns). As could be expected the winning team of the day was from the Huntly-Waiterimu club. Their number 1 team was made up of Murray Liddle, Terry Broughton and Paul Heath, who together shot an eight under 64 gross score. Playing off a team handicap of 7.067 their net score was an impressive 56.933. They started their round from the 10th tee and were on fire from the outset with four birdies on the trot. This was possible as a result of Paul Heath dropping four consecutive putts of
various length with the best from around 45 feet. Over the next 14 holes they managed to score another four birdies without dropping any shots to par. Second team on the day was the Huntly-Waiterimu number two team of Graeme Tait, Graham Bowers, and John Shearer (73 – 12.6 = 60.4). Third were the Clarks Beach number 2 team of Terry Tapp, Bob Dyas and Colin Bava (71 – 8.983 = 62.017). Nearest the Pin awards went to Hauraki’s Alison Keane on the par 3 14th hole and Huntly’s Murray Liddle on the par four 15th (in two). Maramarua’s Wayne Bowater was the only other name on both marker boards. Starting on the 14th he had earlier put his tee shot to three feet and then on the next hole he placed his second shot to within ten feet. The two eventual winning shots were therefore inside of these, with Alison’s being very close to a hole in one. The next COVIC event will be held at the Waikare Golf Club on the 1st August 2018, when the first of five final rounds in the 2018 COVIC Shield and Plate trophies will be played. While team entries are via the COVIC clubs, playing extras are welcome as guests subject to prior enquiry approval and acceptance by the host club.

New Zealand Golf. The North Island Men’s Strokeplay was first competed for in 1938 and apart from the war years this would be the 90th staging of this fixture. Past winners are a “who’s who” of New Zealand Golf but more recently include the likes of Ryan Fox, Danny Lee, Josh Geary and Mark Brown. Apart from Lee and Geary other recognisable BOP names on the trophy include Mike Nicholson, Owen Kendall, Mark Smith, Eddie Burgess and Bradley Iles. The inaugural North Island Women’s Strokeplay only took place in 2008 with Dana Kim winning and that event was also played at Whakatane Golf Club. Following Kim, the next winner was Lydia Ko winning the first of three in a row as a 13-year-old. The Bay of Plenty Open Championship has been the flagship event for our province since its inception in 1960 and for many years, was run by the host Club Whakatane, on behalf of Bay. In recent years Bay of Plenty Golf have joined forces with Whakatane to run the event. It has always been a major focus to raise the profile of this fixture and the shift from provincial to national status will certainly help in achieving this. Top amateur players are forever trying to lift their ranking as part of their pathway in golf and this will ensure excellent fields assembling at Whakatane in September.
The representative calendar only gets serious from September on as the 14 New Zealand Provinces go about selecting their teams for traditional Inter-district matches that provide a lead-up to the Toro Interprovincial events at the end of November and early December. Players endeavouring to make their respective 6 player Toro teams will see Whakatane as the perfect opportunity to make an impression on their selectors as well as earning important amateur ranking points.
10TH ANNIVERSARY OF GOLF INTERCLUB RIVALRY!

The day’s event is a lot of fun with all players having the chance to take home one of the traditional meat pack prizes being awarded to the individual players with the better rounds So come Sun, 2nd Sept, we will again have an answer as to which Club is the best in the Bay for 2018!

Sunday [Father’s Day] 2nd September will see representative golfers from each of the 5 Eastern Bay of Plenty Golf Clubs at odds again for the tenth occasion, all out to prove that their “home” club is the best in the Eastern Bay! This year’s host club will be Kawerau whose Members have the honour of being the only Club to have won the trophy on an away visit, so at home they will be hard to beat though I’m sure that defending Champions Te Teko may have something to say about that! Club members naturally will assure you that their Golf Club is the best, for any number of different reasons, our fun golf day allows for the answer to be whichever Club can win the annual “Best in the Bay” Interclub Golf Challenge. Over the last 9 years Clubs and their members have taken on board with enthusiasm the concept that winning the Trophy allows them to claim boasting rights as the “Best in the Bay” and the day’s activities provide opportunity for plenty of friendly “sledging” both before playing and afterwards in the clubhouse as the results are announced. The Interclub Challenge provides an opportunity for each Club to choose their best team of “Stableford” players and match then against the other 4 clubs. The format allows for an aggregate team stableford combining both men’s and women’s scores. Each year since the inaugural tournament in 2009 the major Club Team prize has been generously sponsored by the Pacific Golfer NZ Ltd, this continuing support is greatly appreciated by all the 5 Club’s members & supporters.

major milestone in any golfer’s life – that elusive hole-in-one. After completing the third year of her golfing scholarship at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the 22-year-old returned home last Wednesday for her end-of-academic-year break, during which time she will host the fourth annual Lucy Owen Fundraising Golf Tournament at her home course at Waipawa Golf Club this Monday, June 4. Owen had to battle injury as well as the death of her beloved grandfather, Monty, during her second year playing US college golf, but was pleased to report her third year had gone a lot better. “I had a lot better results on course this year. I had two top-20 finishes the semester just been, I made a hole-in-one, my first ever, and I had my best tournament round, a one-under in Tampa – the same tournament I hit my hole-in-one,” said Owen, who scored six birdies in her round, but admitted she scored her ace in the practice round. “So it didn’t really count for anything. But it was still pretty cool.” Although her individual results were pleasing, Lucy said collectively, she and her university teammates struggled in their National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Level 1 Sun Belt conference. “We didn’t do very well overall as a team this year. I think we came second-last but we had a girl quit in the fall so we got pushed back to only five players, and you can’t travel to tournaments with fewer than five players. So there was a lot of pressure on us.” Off the course, Owen had a successful year, selected as president of her university’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee, as well as being selected as a Sun Belt Ambassador, all while maintaining her grades. “My cumulative grade point average for the whole three years I’ve been at Little Rock is 3.57, which is still above average.” She has just one more year of study and is set to graduate next May with a major in psychology and a minor in health and exercise science. “I hope to go and do my masters in sports psychology afterwards. But where, I have no idea.” Which means that her US$23,000 ($32,448) scholarship, which covers her tuition costs, has only one year left to run. That makes her fundraising tour-

OTAGO/SOUTHLAND OTAGO WIN 2018 METRO SENIOR PENNANT
Having led the men’s Metropolitan pennant series from the outset, the Otago Club team finished in style beating St Clair Blue 5-1 in the 2018 final at Balmacewen last month. The young St Clair team came into the final with six straight wins and a half but found Otago a tough prospect in the final. Otago No1 Ben Patston made an impressive start to turn three ahead of Cody McMullan at the turn. McMullan showed improved form coming home but left-handed Patston gave him no chance of getting back in the game, which eventually finished on the 15th green. Otago Club selector Jason Hughes was the only team member to trail early and was two down to St Clair No2 Conor Jamison on the front nine. But Hughes hung in on the homeward run and the pair agreed on a half when Otago had already taken the honours. Otago No3 Brandon Hodgson was too strong for Jakob Bleach, turning 3-up and winning 5 and 4. This gave Hodgson his seventh win in this year’s series with only one loss from his eight outings. Unbeaten Otago No4 John McIntee, who has built an impressive record of seven wins and a half, beat Joseph Hancock with three holes to spare on Saturday. He turned one ahead but his experience told on the homeward nine and he forged ahead of his younger opponent. Otago No5 Duncan Croudis went into the final with eight wins but could not continue this run against former Otago provincial No 1 Tony Giles. This was the second match to finish with an agreed half after it was evident the Balmacewen team had already won. Otago No6 Tyrone Ratahi capped off a solid season by beating St Clair’s Ross Colquhoun on the 15th green. St Clair entered two teams this year and has used a total of 25 players without the services of former provincial representatives Brent McEwan or Chris Snow. With the top four players in St Clair Blue all under 21, the club has a monopoly on junior talent and is building a team for future success.
Seniors Championships to form the New Zealand Seniors Order of Merit. The first North Island Seniors Championship was played at the New Plymouth Golf Club (Ngamotu) from the 11th-13th May, with a solid field of players from across the country. St Clair expects to get strong numbers from elite and casual golfers alike. MARTIN GRUNSTEIN - CEO SUCCESS COMMUNICATIONS SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
Martin Grunstein studied Psychology and Marketing at University of N.S.W. He spent four years in sales and marketing with Colgate-Palmolive before setting up 'SUCCESS COMMUNICATIONS' in 1985. Martin's outstanding results with over 500 companies across over 100 industries have made him an in-demand speaker on Outstanding Customer Service. Martin doesn't hype people up, he teaches techniques and how to apply them to business in the areas of professional attitude to business; understanding the ego of your customer; and how to generate the repeat and referral business that keeps the bottom line healthy. One of Martin's strengths is his ability to customize his material to the needs and situation of an individual organisation. That is one of the strongest themes in the many "corporate testimonials" that are evidence of the success of his involvement in a conference or meeting. Most importantly, Martin believes that entertainment is the best form of education and in his spare time he has written comedy professionally. Martin's keynote presentations or workshops for smaller groups, will make you laugh however, it's the results you get from the techniques he delivers that will keep you smiling.
