It’s all about the coefficient of restitution
H
By Paul Gueorgieff Editor, Golfer Pacific NZ
ere’s a prediction for 2019. By the end of the year many golfers, including the professionals, will not bother having the flagstick removed from the hole at all. I have been experimenting with the new rule that allows you to leave the flagstick in the hole when putting on the green. And my early conclusion is not to have the pin removed at all. Long putts, medium putts or short putts, it doesn’t matter. In fact I am now believing that leaving the flagstick in the hole helps with putting in general. How could that be, you ask. My theory is this. The flagstick is in the centre of the hole and that gives you something definitive to aim at. An empty hole is not so definitive. Oddly enough this very theory was mentioned by former New Zealand golfer Frank Nobilo who we best know these days as a television commentator on the PGA Tour in the United States. Don’t get me wrong. You are not, for example, never going to miss a shortish putt again. But having the pin in the centre of hole gives you something to focus on. Keeping that focus is
important. The first question I was asked when I declared to friends that I would in future be leaving the flag in on all occasions was how many times did the ball bounce out. The answer was none and remains none after a full month of doing so. I am perhaps a little lucky that the club I play at in Wellington has metal flagsticks. In other words the flag remains fairly erect even in Wellington’s winds. But that does not stop flagstick leaning in one direction and I have not yet had cause to remove a flag. I may re-evaluate that situation when I come to a course that has fibreglass-like flagsticks which bend considerably in a strong wind. American golfer Bryson DeChambeau has been a leader on the PGA Tour in leaving the flagstick in the hole. DeChambeau went to the length of getting many of the flagsticks he would encounter at the different venues on the tour tested for their firmness, or as he described it the “coefficient of restitution’’. I have looked those words up in the dictionary and they appear to form the correct phrase. Please use this line to impress
your friends. I also have another theory that a flagstick may avoid the occasional horseshoe, where the ball rings the hole and stays out. I believe if the ball touches the flagstick there is chance the ball will go slightly downward which might be enough to ensure the ball goes all the way downward. I was so convinced by my theories that I did some homework on the subject. I came across an article on a study that had been conducted by top golf teacher Dave Pelz. To get straight to the point, Pelz, prior to the change of rules, concluded: “Leave the flagstick in whenever the rules allow, unless it is leaning so far toward you that the ball can’t fit.” Pelz rolled thousands of balls at the hole with the pin in, out, and leaning in each direction. Three of his conclusions were: “One. Perhaps most surprising, when the flagstick leans either slightly toward the golfer or away, the odds of it helping to keep the ball in the hole increase: With the flagstick leaning away from the golfer, the hole becomes effectively larger; when the flagstick leans toward the golfer, the ball rebounds downward, again helping shots find the hole.
“Two. Only in the most obvious case, when the flagstick is leaning so far toward the golfer that there isn’t enough room for the ball, is leaving the flagstick in a bad idea. “Three. Even if you don’t hit the flagstick dead centre, it still will aid you. It proved especially advantageous when chipping downhill and at faster speeds. I even believe the flagstick should be left in when you’re putting from an inch or two off the green in the fringe. The flagstick will help you make more putts unless it is leaning severely toward you or it’s so windy that it is moving and might knock your ball away.’’ A reminder this study was conducted long before the change of rules. I would suggest Pelz today is advising everyone to leave the flagstick in. There was one occasion last month where a playing partner hit the pin from a long distance and the ball bounced away. He reckoned that was a reason why the pin should be removed. I argued that the ball may not have gone in anyway because it was travelling too fast. We have all seen a ball ring the hole even when we have thought the ball was going in.

T
he 100th New Zealand Open will have two United States Open winners in the field. One is comeback New Zealand golfer Michael Campbell. It was announced last month that Campbell would resume his professional career in the New Zealand Open before embarking on the seniors tours in the US and Europe. The other US Open winner confirmed for the open in Queenstown from February 28-March 3 is Geoff Ogilvy from Australia. Ogilvy won the US Open in 2006, the year after Campbell triumphed at the Pinehurst No 2 course in North Carolina when Tiger Woods was one of the runners-up. In addition to the 2006 US Open, Ogilivy also won three World Golf Championships and was once ranked at No 3 in the world. Ogilvy, 41, will be making just his second start in a New Zealand Open and part of the decision to put up his hand was he has relocated back to Melbourne after 20 years living in the US. “The New Zealand Open is seen by golfers internationally as a fantastic tournament,’’ Ogilvy said. “They say Queenstown is the prettiest place in the world — I’ve never been there so I can’t wait. “Professional golf can put you in a box and when you play in the US it’s just easier to stay there. It hasn’t really been possible to compete in the New Zealand Open – but it is now and I couldn’t be more excited.” Ogilvy has won 12 times as a professional including eight occasions on the PGA Tour, culminating in his victory at the 2006 US Open. He was fourth in the 2011 US Masters, fifth in the British Open in 2005 and twice sixth in the PGA Championship. Overall, he spent two and a half years in the top 10 world rankings. New Zealand Open tournament director Michael Glading said Ogilvy’s presence would add to the event’s stature. “We are delighted to attract someone of Geoff’s calibre to this event,” Glading said. “For two decades he has been one of Australia’s most successful players in Europe and on the PGA Tour. “We are confident he will enjoy the experiences on and off the golf course in Queenstown. Geoff is a student of the game and I know he is mindful of the great players from his homeland who
have left such an indelible mark on the New Zealand Open Championship in the past.” Ogilvy is quick to say, however, that he is not just coming to make up the numbers. “The older you get, the more things like national opens take pride of place on your resume. Tournaments like the New Zealand Open stand the test of time.” Former Australian golfer, the late Peter Thomson, won the New Zealand Open an amazing eight times in the 1950s and 1960s and Ogilvy is well aware he was one of the tournament’s most dominate competitors. “I knew Peter Thomson very well – a real legend who has won this tournament many times. I’ve also had the privilege to play a lot over the years with New Zealanders like Cambo (Michael Campbell) and Phil Tataurangi,” Ogilvy said. Ogilvy competed at the 1999 New Zealand Open at Formosa in Auckland but it is not how he wants to be remembered. “The wind blew 100 miles an hour, it was my last tournament after nine in a row and it was one tournament too far. I didn’t make the cut – so let’s call this my first time properly at a New Zealand Open,” he said with a smile. While he is looking forward to the open, he is unsure how much golf he will play in 2019 as his next few years will be dedicated more to his three children. “I am done playing 26 to 30 tournaments a year at least for the next few years. “If I play well, then absolutely I will likely play a bit more but if I don’t, then I’ll focus more on my golf architecture business and my media work. It is an exciting period but I will always be a professional golfer. I am always going to play a few tournaments every year. “To win would be amazingly special. I’m definitely coming to try and make that happen.” Ogilvy will compete for a prize pool of $1.3 million in a field of 152 players over two courses, The Millbrook Resort and The Hills. The final two rounds will be at The Hills. Simultaneously, a pairing of one professional and one amateur will play a best-ball format for the New Zealand ProAm Championship, making it a unique event within the Asia-Pacific region. The event is co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and the Asian Tour, and in partnership with the Japan Golf Tour.

Trans-Tasman Mid-Am Winners GOLF EVENT 6
2019 NEW ZEALAND MEN’S & WOMEN’S MID-AMATEUR Omanu Golf Club Sunday 13 January
N
ew Zealand’s Dale Clarke (Sherwood Park) and Australia’s Louise Mullard (Morisset) have proved they are the ones to beat, on both sides of the Tasman, in the competitive Mid-Am Golf scene. Clarke and Mullard, who are the current Australian Mid-Amateur Champions, have won the 2019 New Zealand Mid-Amateur at the Omanu Golf Club today, both in convincing form. Clarke’s win after the 54-hole tournament was with an impressive 12 shot margin, Mullard by 7. Both led the tournament from start to finish. Clarke opened with the best round of the day on Friday with a 71, as did Mullard on the par 72, links style course. Clarke got better and better as the weekend rolled on with his best round of the tournament, a 6-under 66 today. A little bogey blemish on the challenging par 3, 7th could not detract from his seven birdies on the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 10th, 15th, 16th and a chip in on the 17th which simply meant, he would not be caught. Clarke is the current holder of the Neil Woodbury Cup from his 2018 New Zealand Mid-Amateur win, time will tell if he can make it a three-peat in 2020. Mullard is also a two-time winner with wins in the 2017 and 2018 Australian Women’s Mid-Amateur. A former professional for more than a decade she returned to amateur golf in 2012
after a ten-year break for marriage and a family. Mullard edged out some of New Zealand’s best women Masters’ players with final rounds of 74 and 79, to add to her opening 71, for a total of 224. Chasing hard was Waikato’s Robyn Pellow (Ngaruawahia) who shot 76, 82 and a one over 73 today, the best round of the day for the women. Sadly, for Pellow she had to settle for 2nd place, 7 shots behind Mullard. Also finishing on 231 points, was Bay of Plenty representative Heather Keefe (Springfield) who as the tournament’s highest placed eligible kiwi, was invited by tournament promoters PaR nz Golfing Holidays to compete in the 2019 Australian Women’s Mid-Amateur in November, in NSW, (venue to be confirmed). With rounds of 77, 78 and 76, Jill Morgan (Cambridge), also a Waikato representative, finished her 2019 challenge with a total of 231 points. One shot back was Vaha Fapiano (North Shore), a regular North Harbour representative. Clarke’s nearest rival in the men’s championship was Adam Williams (Muriwai) who shot 73, 73 and 71 today for a total of 217, two ahead of Omanu members Gary Cannell and Simon Wright. Cannell did however claim the best stableford place, with the best net won by Michael McCarten (Hamilton). Liz Bartlett (Ngaruawahia) won the women’s best net after her second round, a blistering 64 net, with local, Paula Chepelsky winning the ladies best stableford title. Competing concurrently at Omanu, was the 2019 NZ 9-Hole Masters that
was won by Elizabeth-Ann Nightingale (Riverside) with 59 stableford points, over a 27-hole, 3-day tournament. In second place was Te Puke’s Joanne Burt, with 55 points. Four shots back with 51 points were Margaret Foster (Warkworth) and Lyn Erni (Te Puke). 151 players from around the country were joined by golfers from Australia, New Caledonia, USA, Fiji and South Africa in the 2019 Mid Am Championships and NZ 9-Hole Masters. under the auspices of New Zealand Golf announced that Omanu will be the venue partner again in 2020. Entry forms and details will be published in due course. The signature hole and probably one of the more scenic photographs on a New Zealand golf course would be the par 4 5th that curves left around the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu to an elevated green. Driving line is key as an over aggressive line combined with a miss-timed drive will see you ending up in the drink, however, the hole sets up for a right to left shaped drive which will carve yardage off yourapproach shot. of Wanaka is a stunning and tranquil holiday destination in the heart of the Queenstown Lakes region. Perched above the picturesque township is the lovely Wanaka golf club; the biggest club in Otago and Southland with over1000 members. Host to the NZ Mixed foursomes in 2017, the NZ Women’s Seniors in 2012 and Men’s in 2009, Wanaka Golf Club boasts a well maintained, charming and challenging layout, with great value for money. Measuring 5770m (blues) and 5496m (whites) the course isn’t long by modern standards, but careful course management and the ability to shape your shots is important if you want to score well. The small greens and natural contours of the land also present their own challenge, so playing safe to the middle of the greens is recommended. It’s also important to try and keep your eye on the ball, as the spectacular views across the town and lake to Mount Aspiring National Park are some of the best in New Zealand, and can certainly add an extra distraction to your game. The two nines are very different. The front-nine, which was established in the 1930s, features an undulating layout with small greens nestled amongst the rolling terrain. The back nine, which was added across the road in 1967, is much longer and slightly flatter—but no less spectacular. The club has progressed significantly in the past decade with capital improvements and course upgrades, making it one of the most scenic and playable courses around. The club features all the usual facilities you’d expect from a quality golf club, including club and cart hire, fully-stocked pro shop, driving range and a café and bar. »» www.wanakagolf.co.nz »» Email: wanaka@golf.co.nz »» Phone: +64 3 443 7888

Its fairways follow the natural lie of the land and features a sandy, wasteland feel, rough with patches of marram grass and large undulating greens. The course has 5 tee locations ranging from beginner to championship providing a real challenge for all levels of golfer and was rated inside the top 30 NZ courses in NZ Golf Magazine’s 2019 rankings. The Cromwell course hosts the New Zealand Open final qualifying event annually. Course facilities include a full length driving range and large multi-tier putting and chipping green, on-site PGA Professional, fully stocked pro-shop along with electric cart, trundle, and club hire. Situated on the 45th parallel, the inland location and surrounding mountains creates a microclimate nearing semi-arid. With less than 400mm (<15 inches) of evenly spread rain and 2200 hours of sunshine per year, golf can be played comfortably year-round with dry underfoot conditions. In winter a crisp white frost usually ensures a brilliantly sunny day in which to enjoy a round of golf on a course maintained to a consistently high standard. The golf course is in the centre of the town, which in turn is surrounded by vine yards and orchards. This is the centre of the world renown Central Otago Pinot Noir producing locations of Bannockburn, Bendigo and Lowburn so wine tasting opportunities are numerous. The town is also located adjacent to Lake Dunstan and the junction of the Clutha and Kawarau Rivers. »» www.cromwellgolf.co.nz »» Cromwell 9310, New Zealand »» Phone: 03 445 0165
• White 5495m • Ladies 5035m ARROWTOWN GOLF CLUB is the jewel in the crown literally as it sits below the Crown Range and runs alongside the famous Arrow river which over 100 years ago was once a hive of activity during the gold rush era. The course borders the outskirts of Arrowtown which is about 20km from the centre of Queenstown and offers stunning views of some well known ski fields, the Remarkables and Coronet Peak. If you are lucky enough to play on this hidden gem then you’ll will no doubt be blown away by the unique layout of the course as the narrow rolling fairways weave their way through valleys and rocky pillars very much like Roxburgh golf club. In the summertime the Browntop grass in the long rough is left to seed, leaving a colour scheme that represents a truly natural setting and makes the course look like a postcard. In 2012 the course won the New Zealand Golf Course Superintendants Association (NZGCSA) Environment award which recognises New Zealand’s leading golf course in relation to their environmental management practices. The club under took the removal of wilding trees and broom, while re-establishing Matagouri amongst the schist rock outcrops. From a playability perspective, the course is the shortest out of the top 5 but probably requires the most accuracy from tee to greens. Again like Wanaka, Roxburgh and North Otago, the greens are very small. However for any big hitters, there are a lot of risk and reward holes that can provide a lot of birdies but also double bogeys and beyond. One of the best holes is the 18th which requires a blind shot over a hill to a fairway that slopes to the left towards a pond. A good drive leaves only a wedge shot to the green and a good birdie opportunity however getting a good drive away is the key. ALEXANDRA lies in the beautiful Manuherikia valley at the confluence of the Manuherikia and Clutha rivers. Surrounded by the high mountain ranges of the Old Man, Dunstan and Hawkduns, and with the barren Knobby Range as its background, this is a special part of Central Otago featuring stunning scenery, great history as well as plenty of things to do for golfers and non golfers alike. The pines bordering the golf course along State Highway 8 were originally planted to contain the desert sands that prevailed in the area. Most find it hard to imagine that today’s stunning golf course could be created from such beginnings. The course features a flat but undulating desert type terrain with fully irrigated fairways from tee to green. Narrow fairways mean accuracy is of prime importance if you are to avoid the desert remnants in the rough and the many trees lining the fairways. Of interest, and one reason why golfers find their round at Alexandra appears to go so quickly, is the lack of continuous holes of same par value! Only twice in the 18 holes do you play consecutive holes of equal par! With the high ranges viewable from most parts of the course golfers find this is a most scenic as well as challenging course. At just over an hour drive from Queenstown and Wanaka the golf course and this unique area are well worth a visit. Come and see what we mean, phone SubPar golf shop at 03 448 8374 or email SubPar@xtra.co.nz to book a tee time now. Green fees are $35 for NZ affiliated players with group discounts available. »» www.alexandragolf.co.nz »» State Highway 8, Alexandra 9340 »» Tel/Fax: 03 448 8204

Birdies and bucking broncos is James Tauariki’s summer By Paul Gueorgieff, Golfer Pacific editor
S
ummer is a busy time for Rotorua golfer James Tauariki. For example Tauariki won the men’s division of the New Zealand Maori golf tournament in Taupo. The morning after he was 440km away in Whangarei for a rodeo event. His brother had driven him through the night on what Tauariki described as a “midnight trip’’. Tauariki, 16, said he had been a rodeo rider all his life which is similar to his golfing career which he said he took up at the age of four. “We had some old clubs at home and dad cut one down for me. I have been going ever since.’’ Tauariki made a one-horse race of the golf final at Taupo last month. He beat fellow Rotorua golfer Marcus Lloyd 6 and 5 in the final and was humble in victory. “I guess I played good,’’ Tauariki said. He was actually four under the card when play finished after the 13th hole. Tauariki is no stranger to scoring under par. A good example came last October in the qualifying section of his club championships at Springfield. Playing off the back tees the plus-three handicapper scored an outstanding 57, which was 13 under par. He scored 11 birdies and an eagle.

SHOT OF A CHAMPION, MICHAEL CAMPBELL TELLS WINNER By Paul Gueorgieff, Golfer Pacific editor
W
ellington golfer Mia Scrimgeour received the ultimate accolade after winning the women’s division of the New Zealand Maori golf tournament in Taupo. The tournament was played at the Centennial course of the Taupo Golf Club and in an all-Wellington final Scrimgeour, from Manor Park, was one up over her opponent Te Rongopai Clay from Titahi. The 18th hole is no easy task, being a 134-metre par three over a gully and Clay hit her tee shot to the right of the green and into the semi-rough. Scrimgeour stepped up and hit her tee shot to within about 10 feet of the hole to basically ensure victory. Watching the final was comeback professional golfer Michael Campbell who just a couple of days earlier at the tournament had been announced as an inductee to the Maori Golf Association’s hall of fame. Scrimgeour said Campbell was impressed by her final tee shot and told her so afterwards. “He said that was a shot of a champion,’’ Scrimgeour proudly recalled. Scrimgeour admitted to nerves
during the final but said it was “good nerves.’' “Obviously a win was going to mean a lot to me and I really wanted to win.’' Scrimgeour, 15, has been playing golf since she was aged five and represented Wellington in age group events from age nine. Last month the one handicapper stepped up to the open grade when she was part of the Wellington team at the prestigious Interprovincial Championships in Christchurch. Scrimgeour recalled her introduction to golf by following her father when he played with workmates and friends. “I only just tagged along to begin with,’’ Scrimgeour said. “Then I started playing and he stopped playing when I started beating him.’’ Scrimgeour had to work hard in the final. She found herself three down after six holes but said she remained positive because she had not played badly. A turning point in the game came on the par five 11th hole when Scrimgeour hit her tee shot into the long grass. She chipped out and then piped a four wood to 1-1/2 feet from the hole to score a birdie four.

Government wants chunk of Hong Kong Golf Club land
NEWS
T
he venue of the Hong Kong Open is under threat from the country’s government which wants to take one-fifth on the golf course’s land. The Hong Kong Golf Club at Fanling measures 172 hectares and the Hong Kong government’s task force on land supply has recommended it should take away 32 hectares “for development’’. Hong Kong Golf Association chief executive Danny Lai said golfers have been shocked and enraged by the recommendation and it has cast doubt on the future of the $US2 million Hong Kong Open which is co-sanctioned by the European and Asian Tours and has long been regarded as a jewel in Asia’s golfing tournament crown. In a South China Morning Post newspaper report Lai said: “It will definitely cast doubt on the future of the Hong Kong Open if part of the Old Course is taken away by the government. “Although the Hong Kong Open will not use the eight holes of the Old Course as part of the competition, the area provides essential supporting services. The tournament may not be sanctioned by the European Tour and Asian Tour.” A golf course facility member of the Asian Golf Industry Federation, the Hong Kong Golf Club which operates three 18hole courses at the Fanling venue (Old, New and Eden), issued a statement expressing deep disappointment at the suggestion of losing land. Kenneth Lau Ka-lok, convenor of the Hong Kong Alliance of Golfers, said the sport was ‘shocked and enraged’ by the recommendation. “How can a city hold a public opinion poll to vote out the sport of golf?” he said. Asked how he would react if he were from the European Tour, he said: “I would re-think whether to hold any tournaments in a city so unfriendly to golf.” Land supply task force chairman Stanley Wong denied the task force is un-

friendly to golf. He said there was not enough land for housing “especially given the long queuing time for grass-roots people to move into public housing flats.’’ He added that “some people will inevitably be affected if we are to work for the good of the general public.’’ Inaugurated in 1959, the Hong Kong Open is one of two tournaments in the world, along with the US Masters at Augusta National, that has been held at the same venue every year for more than half a century. Lai said the HKGA was working with the HKGC to set up a national training academy at the Old Course for golf development in Hong Kong at all levels – from grass roots to the elite. But the plan
would be scrapped if the government takes back part of the land. “The golf association has a firm and strong stance in preserving Fanling for its players and the future of the sport in Hong Kong,” said Lai, who also accused the task force of “completely ignoring the immense contributions of the Fanling facility to golf development and to the community.’’ ••• For related stories please follow the following links:

ROYAL WELLINGTON JOINS ASIAN GOLF FEDERATION
R
oyal Wellington Golf Club has become the first New Zealand golfing establishment to join the Asian Golf Industry Federation (AGIF). Host of the 2017 Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship and the 2018 Annika Australasia Invitational, Royal Wellington consists of two courses, the 18-hole championship Heretaunga course and nine-hole Terrace course, and good practice facilities. “Our courses offer an enjoyable and challenging golfing experience in a beautiful setting,” said Kurt Greve, the club’s chief executive, who is a member of the Club Management Association of America (CMAA). “We admire much of the educational work that the AGIF has been undertaking, especially related to club management, as a CMAA member, and greenkeeping through the Golf Course Superintendents Association of
America (GCSAA). “Royal Wellington already has strong ties with Asia via our reciprocal clubs and international members, so it is naturally a perfect fit for us to become a golf course facility member of the federation. We look forward to supporting many AGIF activities in the months and years ahead.” Among the clubs with which Royal Wellington has reciprocal arrangements in Asia are the Hong Kong Golf Club, Fanling and The Singapore Island Country Club, both of which are golf course facility members of the AGIF. Eric Lynge, the AGIF’s chief executive, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Royal Wellington Golf Club into the AGIF. As a non-profit industry organisation, our remit is to support the golfing industry in any way we can.
“Since the federation was launched 10 years ago, it has never been constrained by geographical boundaries, as evidenced by the genuinely international nature of so many of our member companies. “We’ll be pleased to have staff from Royal Wellington participating in our club management and greenkeeping initiatives.” With the addition of Royal Wellington to the AGIF’s membership roster, the federation now boasts member clubs from 11 countries and territories – Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and now New Zealand. It was in 2004, to commemorate the 250th year of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, that that the club became known as Royal Wellington Golf Club.
PGA Tour donated $US190 million last year GOLF NEWS
F
or nearly 20 years, every weekday, a man now in his 80s caught a bus to an adult day health centre in Hawaii. The health centre improves the well-being of those in its care through compassionate and personalised health services and has become like a second home for the man, named Sets Tasaka. Tasaka is well known to the Maui community in Hawaii as he for decades, along with his brother Henry, served ice creams at their family’s century-old Tasaka Guri-Guri shop. The health centre was a primary beneficiary of last month’s Tournament of Champions in Hawaii and Tasaka a perfect example to the hundreds of thousands of others who have benefitted from the PGA Tour donations. It was announced during the Tournament of Champions event that the PGA Tour generated a record $US190 million for more than 3000 charitable causes in 2018. The charitable total, which
brings the all-time total to $US2.8 billion, includes donations made by tournaments on the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions, Web.com Tour, Mackenzie Tour-PGA Tour Canada, PGA Tour Latinoamérica and PGA Tour Series-China. “Through the world of golf, the PGA Tour and its tournaments, backed by its network of volunteers, drive positive impact at unprecedented levels to support and improve local communities,” said PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan. “By supporting a PGA Tour event, you make an impact on countless philanthropic organisations in your community. As remarkable as our nearly $US3 billion in donations is, what really matters are the remarkable stories like Sets’ that every tournament has. It’s a credit to our partners – host organisations, title sponsors, volunteers, the fans in the communities in which we play, as well as our players, who are relentlessly supportive of the impact the tour makes on so
many lives.” Since its move to Maui in 1999, the Tournament of Champions has generated more than $US6.3 million in charitable impact for the community, including the Hale Makua’s Adult Health Centre. “We are privileged to help so many great people who, in some cases, just need to be reminded they are loved,” said the health centre chief executive Wesley Lo. “The goal of Adult Day Health is to assist with maintaining or restoring their ability to live on their own at home. Without the financial support of the Tournament of Champions and the PGA Tour, this and so many of our other programmes simply could not exist. “Adult Day Health gives me something to do every day,” said Sets Tasaka, who lost Henry, his regular lunchtime visitor at health centre, when he passed away in 2015. “At home, I would have had nothing to do, and just watched TV. Every day I’m here, I feel good.”
NZ team for Queen Sirikit Cup announced N ew Zealand Golf has named it's team for the 41st Queen Sirikit Cup to be played in Adelaide from March 6-8. The three-person team comprises Juliana Hung from Canterbury and the Auckland pair of Carmen Lim and Vivian Lu. Hung won the New Zealand Strokeplay Championship at Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, north of Wellington, while Lu claimed the New Zealand Amateur Championship at Wairakei Golf & Sanctuary in Taupo. Both Hung and Lim have also returned from an amazing experience in Florida during the Lydia Ko Scholarship in early January. This scholarship provides the opportunity for young female
golfers to learn from our very best to help more players grow and hopefully join Ko on the LPGA Tour. The Queen Sirikit Cup is the trophy attached to the Amateur Ladies Asia-Pacific Invitational Golf Team Championship. The tournament format records the best two strokeplay scores daily for each team, while an individual prize is also up for grabs. New Zealand has won the Queen Sirikit Cup on three occasions, those wins coming in 1984, 1990 and 1999. Thirteen other national teams from Australia, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Chinese-Taipei, China, Philippines, Japan, Korea and Thailand will compete for the prestigious trophy.

Golf clubs in New Zealand, and through much of the world, are struggling for membership numbers. It’s no different in Scotland, the home of the game, but one club there that has arrested that decline is Newmachar in Aberdeenshire. Martin Inglis from Scottish golf magazine Bunkered (www.bunkered. co.uk) reveals what the club did.
Emphasis on junior membership and having a PGA professional
G
iven that Scotland has lost more than 10,000 registered golfers in the past two years, you could be forgiven for thinking the membership situation in the home of golf is all doom and gloom. That isn’t entirely the case though as, across the nation, a number of clubs are working hard to arrest the widespread decline. One of those is the 36-hole Newmachar Golf Club in Aberdeenshire, one of the largest membership clubs in Scotland. Eighteen months ago, the club’s membership was dwindling. With 120 full members short of where it needed to be, the club was losing money at a rate where the for sale signs were close to being put up. However, a complete revamp of its business structure upon the arrival of operations director Mike Timson has seen an increase in membership from less than 1200 to 1420, including the trebling of its junior membership from 35 to more than 100. What’s more, all this has been done while increasing its member-

ship fees by 10 perecent. Newmachar achieved such gains in its junior membership as a result of more than 400 children visiting the club in 2018 as part of an inter-school golf programme, that the club devised, which combines golf skills with subjects in the school curriculum. The junior golf coordinator, employed by the club full-time, goes into 16 local schools to take lessons for students aged about 8-11, only for the kids to come to the golf club as part of a field trip, where they receive lessons from a PGA development professional, whose role is predominantly geared towards lessons for juniors and beginners. Timson said: “Back in 2017, we didn’t have a relationship with the schools at all. All the club offered was ClubGolf through Scottish Golf on a Wednesday night. Volunteers ran that and it would be either on or not depending on how busy the volunteers were. So we structured a plan that built these links with the community. “Now, we’re making club and school handicaps for Newmachar, giving them
league tables and in 2019, we’re going to be running inter-school and after-school competitions back at the club. We have a (mobile phone) application that tracks the kids’ progress as well so the parents can see how they’re developing. “These parents – some of whom would never have considered playing golf – are coming to the club too, watching their kids and even taking the sport up themselves, so it’s having a huge knock-on effect. “It costs us £40,000 to go into these schools and the return we’re getting is somewhere between £80,000 and £90,000. It’s fantastic.” Not all golf clubs in Scotland are blessed with the membership numbers and perhaps the finances as Newmachar, though, and the advice Timson has for clubs in where to invest their cash in order to get maximum kick-back is simple. “Invest in a good PGA pro,” adds Timson, who has two PGA professionals in addition to the PGA development professional. “I can’t stress how important that has
February 2019
been for us. I’ve done a lot of work with England Golf in the past and the clubs that don’t have a PGA pro or have an under performing PGA pro are ones that are struggling. “Because it’s our PGA pros that have helped grow our business through our academy. We’re dictating our own business as opposed to waiting for it to come through the gate. “We’re creating a buzz about the place again because all of the staff are happy and the pros are driving business. The biggest thing for golf club committees is that they need to be striving towards one goal and that’s what we’re doing here, we’re working as a team.” The transformation of the club isn’t complete yet. The next step in Newmachar’s business plan is the construction of a 24-bay driving range and indoor golf centre with the addition of a gym, helping the club to achieve its aim of becoming a family-friendly facility and steering itself away from the private members club it once was.

Pioneering family honoured with old Tom Morris award GOLF NEWS
A
n American family which were pioneers in breaking down racial barriers in the game of golf will be the recipient of the 2019 Old Tom Morris Award from the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA). The family includes the late Bill and Marcella Powell and their children, Lawrence and Renee, from Canton in Ohio. Bill Powell was an entrepreneur and pioneering golf course owner who opened Clearview Golf Club in Canton in 1948. The integrated course was the first and is the only to be designed, constructed and owned by an African-American. He was a member of GCSAA for 37 years prior to his death in 2009. Following in his father’s footsteps, Lawrence, a 44-year member of GCSAA, serves as golf course superintendent at
Clearview. Renee Powell was the second African-American woman to join the LPGA Tour, which she was part of from 1967 to 1980. Today, she is the teaching professional at Clearview. Three of the Powells are also members of the National Black Golf Hall of Fame. Bill was inducted in 1996, Renee in 2006 and Lawrence in 2016. GCSAA’s highest honour, the Old Tom Morris Award has been presented annually since 1983 to an individual, who, through a lifetime commitment to the game of golf, has helped mould the welfare of the game in the manner and style exemplified by Old Tom Morris. Morris, a four-time Open Championship winner, was the long-time superintendent at St Andrews in Scotland until his death in 1908. “It means a great deal to receive the Old Tom Morris Award from GCSAA,” said Lawrence Powell. “It shows a rec-
ASIAN TOUR QUALIFIER CHIPPED ONE-HANDED
A
n American golfer who qualified for the Asian Tour often played his chip shots one-handed. The golfer, Austen Truslow, topped the class when he signed off a marathon week with a six-under-par 65 to secure his tour card at the Asian Tour qualifying school final stage in Thailand. Truslow was also the leading player to progress from the previous week’s first stage and impressed many with his one-handed dexterity at chipping as he wrapped up his week with a five-day total of 24-under-par 331. “I started chipping with one hand over a year ago,’’ Truslow recalled. ``I didn’t chip great this week, but it was still a lot better than chipping with two hands. I don’t chip with one hand every single time, but 80 percent of the time,” said Truslow, who admitted that victory was not his main goal heading into the final day at the Lakeview Resort and Golf Club. “I just wanted a good round as it’ll give me my status on tour. I finished well... and I kind of lucked into the win today. “My goal when I was 18 was to get on tour by age 22 and the Asian Tour qualifying school was the last time to do it. It’s been a good week. I finally have a place to play full time. I felt that my game is good enough once I get out there, but I haven’t done well in qualifying. Now that I have a card, I can loosen and show my consistency.” Meanwhile, Thai Sadom Kaewkanjana and China’s Jin Cheng will plot the next stages in their fledgling careers after emerging among the top-35 and ties to earn their tour cards. The pair will be hoping to carry forward their distinguished amateur records as they start their professional careers on the Asian Tour. Sadom was part of the Thai teams that claimed a silver medal at the Southeast Asian Games and won the Asia Pacific Men’s Amateur Team Championship for the Nomura Cup. For his part, Jin, now in his third year at the University of Southern California, will look to make an impact in the second half of 2019. “I’ll maintain my amateur status at least until June. I have school until then,” said Jin, whose resume includes an appearance at the US Masters after winning the Asia Pacific Amateur Championship. Jin, who took up golf when aged eight and lived in Singapore during his secondary school years, added: “When I turn professional, the Asian Tour will be an ideal platform for me.”

ognition and appreciation for us, and it’s a great honour to come from my association. I know my father would have said the same thing.” Bill discovered the game at age nine and was a former member of the Wilberforce University golf team. The first golf match played in the United States between a white college and an historically black college was in 1937 between Wilberforce and Ohio Northern, and Bill was part of that team. Clearview, an 18-hole course that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, would set the stage for the careers of Lawrence and Renee. Lawrence began mowing the fairways at age eight. Both Powell children knew from an early age the significance of the course their father and mother had founded. “It was explained to me even when I was very little,” Lawrence Powell said.
“It was a golf course for everyone. My dad would say: ‘Anyone could play as long as they played by the rules’.” The PGA of America also recognised Bill Powell’s impact on the game, honouring him posthumously in 2009 with its distinguished service award. Lawrence and Renee Powell will officially receive the Old Tom Morris Award on February 6 during the Opening Session of the 2019 Golf Industry Show in San Diego. “Just as Old Tom Morris was an innovator who changed the face of the game on many fronts, so has the Powell family influenced the game to change it for the better,” said GCSAA President Darren Davis. “GCSAA is honoured to recognise not only two of our own in Bill and Larry Powell, but the whole family for their work in making golf a more welcoming place for everyone.”

How can golf coaching help golf clubs? By Ian Hardie NZPGA Professional
I
t’s no secret that participation in the game of golf worldwide has been declining for some years now, in almost every country that has traditionally played golf. Around the world, golf clubs and courses that were once flourishing and filled with golfers, have been closing at an alarming rate, many more are about to be forced to close or are struggling so badly financially. That it’s only a matter of time before they too will simply become a part of history. Many people around the world are busy offering their opinion as to why this is happening and most of them are able to come up with a bunch of extremely valid reasons as to what is causing this decline. However, while knowing about why this is happening would seem like a useful thing to do. All of these opinions don’t really seem to be helping much. This is the same problem that some golfers have by the way, they spend all of their time searching for all the things they are supposedly ‘doing wrong’ in their golf game, so that they ‘know what they are doing wrong’ but very little if any time is spent actually looking for things that work well. As a result they continue to struggle along playing bad golf – which is shame, when it’s abundantly clear to most people that building on the things that are going well. Is pretty much the secret to improving your golf game or anything for that matter.
Anyway, back to the decline in the game of golf that I have been talking about, instead of adding my many, varied and sometimes downright odd opinions to the list of things that explain why this has been happening. I’d like to share with you something that can help golf clubs to not only retain their existing club members but also, to increase their income. Now before I do, I need to point out that what I’m about talk to you about will come as no surprise to the people who perform this role around the world – me being one of them. It’s something that we have all known for a very long time and no doubt, the people who trained us to do what we do – knew it as well. A significant chunk of the rest of our industry though, either don’t seem to realise just how effective this role is at a golf club or they are too focused on short term numbers to understand just how much of a long term impact the people that perform this role can have in retaining golf club members, while increasing the golf clubs income. To illustrate this I’m going to share with you a couple of small parts of a study that I came across some time back (if anyone reading this knows where I can get hold of the whole study please let me know) that was done by the PGA of America, which is titled. “The value of quality golf coaching to golf membership retention”. I’m sure that the title alone will be giving you a clue as to what I’m suggesting here. Anyway, the study was apparently carried out with 6,600 private club golfers in South Texas with a multitude of questions covering many aspects of their golf
club experiences. Here are the most important highlights: The study showed 100% member retention among those golfers who engaged in a golf coaching program! That’s right - all of the golfers who had coaching of some sort at the golf club remained as members of the golf club! Just take a minute to think about that one – it’s fairly important. The golfers who were involved in golf coaching played 20% more games of golf, than golfers who didn’t engage with golf coaching. The golfers who had golf coaching tended to spend more money on food and beverage, golf equipment, golf events and tournaments, cart hire and golf incidentals than the golfers who didn’t engage with golf coaching. Now, I’m no accountant but that sounds like extra revenue (or at least retaining the same level) for the golf clubs! The professional coach at the golf club was able to cultivate a better overall culture by driving deeper connections among the golfers / members, ultimately increasing their retention and overall satisfaction with the golf club. After all, what would you rather have at your golf club – an experienced golf coach who is passionate about the game of golf and happy to talk to you about your game or a cost-saving, scorecard dispensing kiosk? The next one is something that I’ve observed many times over the years. The golfers who had golf coaching tended to bring more guests and refer more new members to the golf club than the golfers who didn’t engage with golf coaching. Let me think, a golfer that has regular golf coaching is more likely to bring in ex-
tra green fees from guests and more new members for the golf club. That seems like a good thing, doesn’t it? To be honest, having been involved in the golf industry for most of the past 30 years – none of those survey results came as a surprise to me, and I’m sure that those of you reading this who fill a similar club pro role, will be nodding your head in agreement. The challenge that the entire golf industry faces though, is an attitude of cost cutting and rationalisation due to the declining participation in order to keep things going for as long as possible. A battle that will be lost without the club pro on the front line. Providing the coaching, advice, wisdom and encouragement to the existing members of all golf clubs – to keep them engaged in the game for as long as possible. So, how can golf coaching help golf clubs to retain club members? If your golf club still has a club professional, encouraging your existing club members to have regular golf coaching with your club professional would appear to be the most effective thing that can be done to enable your golf club to not only retain those existing members but also it will in the long term, increase both the revenue to your club as well as the membership numbers. If your golf club doesn’t have one currently, you might be well advised to do anything possible to make sure there is an effective golf professional available at your golf club that can do just that for your members. Before your golf club becomes nothing more than a part of history. Play well.

Westwood and Matthew recognised for their achievements
L
ee Westwood and Catriona Matthew have become the latest recipients of the PGA of Great Britain & Ireland’s recognition award for outstanding contribution to the game of golf. Westwood collected his honour from PGA captain John Heggarty at the association’s annual fund-raising lunch in London, while Matthew was presented with her PGA award at the PGA’s annual lunch in Scotland. Westwood is a seven-time Ryder Cup winner, having made 10 appearances in the competition. He was unbeaten in

both the 2004 and 2006 matches and equalled Arnold Palmer’s record of 12 successive undefeated matches in 2008. One of only a handful of players to have won tournaments on five continents, the former world No 1 was awarded an OBE for his services to golf in 2011. More recently, he served as one of Thomas Bjørn’s Vice-Captains as Europe claimed back the Ryder Cup in Paris last September. Less than two months later, Westwood claimed his 24th European Tour title by winning the Nedbank Golf Challenge in South Africa.
“It has been a great end to the season for me – winning again in South Africa was amazing, and then to receive this prestigious award is the icing on the cake. I am really grateful to be recognised by the PGA and appreciate all their support,” said Westwood. Robert Maxfield, chief executive of The PGA of Great Britain & Ireland, said: “The PGA recognition award is our way of acknowledging great achievements in the game, and I’m delighted on behalf of the PGA’s membership to bestow this accolade on Lee. He is a deserving winner and

a credit to the sport.” Matthew, meanwhile, is Scotland’s most successful female golfer, with four LPGA Tour victories to her name, as well as six Ladies European Tour wins and five top-five finishes in major championships, including a win at the 2009 Women’s British Open. A Solheim Cup stalwart, with nine appearances in the competition, the 49-year-old is well placed to lead Europe when she captains the team at Gleneagles this year.

ne month into 2019 and, like starting a new round of golf, I am full of optimism and excitement about what the year will bring. For eample there is the 100th staging of the New Zealand Open, the NZPGA Championship heading to the Pegasus Golf Course in Canterbury, four men’s majors and five women’s majors, a Presidents’ Cup being played at Royal Melbourne and an amazing number of talented Kiwis playing all over the world playing on all the major professional tours. We are truly blessed to have so many role models playing the game at the highest level and inspiring the next generation of golfers to take up the game. The showcasing of great professional events and the way the professionals make the game seem so easy encourages us all to have a go. Recent studies around the world have shown us that as consumers we are seeking experiences that exceed our expecta-

tions. So what unique experiences is golf offering? This could be playing in a PGA pro-am, a club fitting from a skilled PGA professional, an innovative club competition, a coaching programme that connects people socially while at the same time improving their game, toptracer, golf in the park to name a few ways golf is offering experi-
ence focused engagements. Just to explain toptracer turns a standard golf range into a full interactive experience while golf in the park is a New Zealand Golf concept designed to use park space to exposure golf to the general public. We set up a short course where we use plastic clubs and tennis balls and encourage everyone to have a go.
The traditional formats of the game still exists yet golf facilities are now offering so much more than just 18-hole formats of play, the golf club is a place to meet and socially connect with friends and family. I recently played in a couple of PGA proams in heartland New Zealand and it was humbling to see the way the community really gets behind the events and the giving back from the PGA professionals to players and wider community with coaching clinics and golf shot exhibitions, all engaging and inspiring golfers of all ages and abilities. What will 2019 hold for you and your golf game? Birdies, pars and taking the opportunity to play as many of our great courses as possible while playing with great people and connecting socially and even try a new format that you may just love. NZGOLFUPDATE By Dave Mangan New Zealand Golf
O
n January 1 the rules of golf experienced their biggest upheaval for 40 years and we are more than a month into playing under these new rules. While many things changed overnight, the planning and preparation by the Royal & Ancient, United States Golf Association and their international affiliates was many years in the making. The primary aim of the game’s governing bodies was to make the rules clearer and more easily understood as well speed up the time taken to play the game. So one month into these major rule changes how are things looking for the professional and club golfer? The major thing that we have seen, not only on the professional tours but also watching out the New Zealand Golf office window at the 18th green at the Remuera Golf Club, is leaving the flagstick in the hole. The primary aim of changing the rule to allow the flagstick to be left in the hole while putting was to speed up the game. As a result though we have seen Bryson DeChambeau lead the charge of leaving the flagstick in the hole to gain an advantage. After putting with the flagstick in during

An early appraisal of golf’s new rules
the season’s opening event in Hawaii, DeChambeau’s theory was backed up by putting guru Dave Pelz. Pelz tested the theory using a special putting device built to roll putts accurately, hitting different parts of the pin on flat, uphill and downhill sloping greens. The Pelz test results were conclusive showing that you will hole a higher percentage of putts when you leave the flagstick in. The reason for this effect is that a significant amount of energy is lost from a putt’s speed when the ball hits a fibreglass flagstick. The speed loss enables gravity to pull the slower moving ball down into the hole more often. While I still feel a little strange putting with the flagstick in, it will be interesting to see, when our elite amateur events and New Zealand Open rolls around how our players will approach this. Looking out the office window at the 18th green at the Remuera Golf Club it would seem that groups are around 50/50 in leaving the flagstick in or not. I have certainly received a lot of anecdotal evidence that this is speeding up club players rounds which is good to hear. The other significant change has been changing the dropping procedure, which has seen a change from the old way of
dropping from shoulder height to now dropping from knee height. Looking at the purpose behind this rule, it was to retain some randomness to the drop but also stop excessive bouncing and the requirement for complicated re-drops. The onus is now on the golfer to ensure that they end up dropping the ball in the right way and having it end up in the right place. There have been a few televised incidents of this new dropping procedure and each time I have seen this, while I must admit it looks a bit funny compared to what we are used to, I’m yet to see a re drop required, which was one of the main reasons for the rule change. While these two new rules appear to be getting the most media coverage at the moment in professional and club golf there are a raft of other changes introduced to eliminate players getting stuck with silly penalties. Some of these include now being able to remove a stick, leaf or stone (a loose impediment) from a bunker or penalty hazard, being able to repair any damage on a putting green and no penalty for accidental movement of your ball on a putting green. One change which has surprised me in going slightly under the radar has been the prohibition of your caddy or
anyone standing behind you when you take your stance. This now means your caddy can’t line you up, something that our own Lydia Ko used to do on almost every shot without exception. Again this was another rule that was introduced to try to speed up play but also to return a basic skill to the game which was that players should be able to use their own skill to execute a shot. It was great to see this change barely effect Lydia in her first event of the season, starting strongly with a top 10 in a strong field featuring the 2018 event champions. Over the next few months, I will be most interested to see how the new local rule for stroke and distance (a lost ball or out of bounds) goes. Clubs are encouraged to introduce this for casual club play to avoid players having to return back to the tee for a lost ball or ball out of bounds. Players can estimate where they think they might have lost there ball and drop at a spot between there and the edge of the nearest fairway (and two club lengths onto the fairway) for the cost of two penalty strokes. While this is currently a local rule and not a rule of golf, if it proves popular with the golfing world, it could one day become a rule of golf.

AUCKLAND CARDINAL LOGISTICS WHITFORD PARK PRO-AM 2019
Whitford Park Golf Club were proud to host the 2019 Cardinal Logistics Pro-Am recently. Over 135 amateurs and 57 Professionals took part in the annual event and the first pro-Am of the NZ Calendar. A strong field was assembled, with only a few of the top names missing, but including last year’s winner Pieter Zwart, Michael Hendry, Josh Geary, Mark Brown, and Gareth Paddison among the challengers. The course superintendent Colin Trim and his team had the course looking in top condition for the event. Day one
saw the players greeted with excellent playing conditions, albeit rather warm in the afternoon. The first round leader was experienced campaigner Richard Lee, finding form of old to record a 5 under par 66. Luke Kwon and Mark Brown were tied for second, both shooting 4 under par 67. There were a number of players within striking distance a few shots further back. The final day was also another stunner, with light winds and excellent playing conditions again greeting the players. The afternoon starters did have more wind to contend with early on, however it did abate somewhat later in the final round. With several holes remaining it was becoming a tight battle between four players, Luke Kwon, Richard Lee, Nick Coxon and Mark Brown. It seemed birdies were hard to find by some of the contenders and it was American Luke Kwon who eventually took out top honours with a fine 3 under par 68 to go with his day one effort of 67. Mark Brown held on to second place on his own with 67/70 and there was a 3 way tie for third between Nick Coxon 69/69, Richard Lee 66/72 and James Anstiss 68/70. The best rounds of the day went to Jared Pender and Harry Bateman with 67. The players were well fed and watered in the hot conditions by a friendly team of volunteers. The event winner Luke Kwon also won

HALBERG FOUNDATION’S 50-YEAR TIES WITH HAWKE’S BAY EAGLE SOCIETY ACKNOWLEDGED By Hawkes Bay Today
Eagles Golfing Society of Hawke’s Bay members and guests mark the 50-year relationship with the Halberg Foundation at the Waipukurau Golf Club last month.
If the late Gladstone Wilson was around today he would have been immensely proud of what the Eagles Society of Hawke’s Bay Inc has achieved, according to his son, Stuart Wilson. “He was very proud of belonging to the Eagle society and I’ve still got his blazers with me,” said Wilson after the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation marked the 50th anniversary of its association with the The Eagle Society of New Zealand (Inc) Bay branch with

a morning tea and round of golf at the Waipukurau Golf Club last Sunday. Gladstone Wilson, who died about two decades ago, was the first Bay representative of the society in 1964 after a meeting at Wairakei, Taupo, had discussed the concept of a national society the year before. In 1980, the Bay branch began staging an annual tournament to support its national body which in turn had been supporting Halberg foundation since 1969. The tourney is played at the Napier Golf Club in 2019 the Bay society will host its 40th one. To date, it has raised $352,260 for the Halberg foundation, which Olympian Sir Murray Halberg established in 1963 with the aim of enhancing the lives of physically disabled New Zealanders by enabling them to participate in sport and recreation. Gladstone Wilson, who has won the Waipukurau club championship about eight times — the most anyone has — was, no doubt, passionate about golf. “He was pretty placid, even with Hawke’s Bay stuff,” says Stuart of his father who also had represented the province as a longtime senior men’s amateur representative. “He used to smoke his pipe,” says the 70-year-old son who had emulated his father’s feat in becoming a scratch handicapper. “As everyone used to say, ‘As long as his pipe was lit and he was puffing out smoke he was pretty relaxed’.” Gladstone Wilson went on to become
the inaugural president of the Bay branch, something Stuart wasn’t aware of until branch secretary Jamie MacLeod had invited him two years ago to present a few awards at the annual tourney. Stuart, a former Bay amateur himself, still has photos of his father with several society members from the inaugural days. The semi-retired cropping and livestock farmer still farms a stone’s throw away from the Waipukurau club although he recalls as a youngster his father owned and farmed the property directly opposite the club now. “I could walk across the road and play golf,” say Stuart, mindful his father would probably have too. “If you had had a bad shot you could have probably had ended up in one of our paddocks.”

MARAENUI OPEN WINNER LILLY GRIFFIN EYES US SCHOLARSHIP
TARANAKI NOTICEBOARD
By Hawkes Bay Today
Manawatu golfer Lilly Griffin hopes to begin a United States College scholarship next year. If the 17-year-old Palmerston North Girls’ High School student continues to play like she did on her way to winning the open title at the Maraenui club’s 103-player Sacred Hill Women’s Open last month she should tick that goal off. The top seed and 2.6 handicapper who has represented Manawatu-Whanganui at the last three Toro inter-provincials beat second seed, Hawke’s Bay representative and Napier 4.4 handicapper Haena Seol, 6 and 5 in the final. “I was really joyful when it was all over. This is the first time I have won this tournament in two attempts,” Griffin said referring to the fact she was beaten 5 and 4 by eventual winner Sara Deam in last year’s semifinals. “I had a one under par 73 in my last round which was pretty good too,” Griffin said. She had no problems with Sunday’s windy conditions which included what the Maraenui club’s women’s club captain Adele Leppien described as a “mini hurricane” at one stage. “Those conditions are quite similar to the Manawatu winds I play in at home,” Griffin said. In her semifinal Griffin scored a 4 and

West Coast Challenge 2019
TASMAN WEST COAST CHALLENGE IS BACK
The West Coast has a long golfing history and is proud to offer The West Coast Golf Challenge, a great experience for both local golfers and friends from ‘away’ – which is every part of the world that is not on ‘The Coast’. March 5th-March 8th 2019, will be the 7th edition of the West Coast Golf Challenge. It is a great opportunity to combine four rounds of golf on four quite different courses with the chance to experience some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. The four hosting clubs are Westport on their Kawatiri links at Carters’ Beach, Reefton on their Glenburnie course, Hokitika on their links course at Mahinapua, and Greymouth on their course at Kaiata.
All of the courses will offer different challenges, from the links courses of Hokitika and Westport to the parklands layouts of Reefton and Greymouth, and all will be well prepared and presented. Good hospitality is guaranteed. This is the West Coast after all! Visitors are encouraged to take time either before, during or after the tournament to visit picturesque landmarks such as Denniston, Cape Foulwind, Charleston, Punakaiki, Oceana Gold mine, Lake Brunner, Brunner Mine, Shantytown, Lake Kaniere, Hokitika Gorge or The Glaciers and all of the beauty that lies between and beyond. The chance should also be taken to be impressed by and get your own examples of the wonderful art and crafts that the West Coast prides itself on. A good variety of accommodation and restaurants are available in all of the towns and visitors can choose to relocate for the next day’s play, which the schedule readily allows for, or make any of the towns their base for the duration of the tournament. The courses will be played in the following order, Westport, Reefton, Hokitika and finally Greymouth. Tournament organisers are confident that visitors and locals alike will be impressed with the $14000-plus value prize list. The tournament will be a stableford in three divisions, one for women and two for the men. With fields over 100 in the last two years we expect the limit of 120 players to be reached fairly quickly so enter early to avoid disappointment. 22012 2012 • April Edi tion• April ZealandEdition New Zealand

NELSON FESTIVAL OF GOLF 2019
Considering playing in a multi-round golf tournament this year?...Then this is the one for you to enter. At last year’s event, everyone involved including players, non playing partners, sponsors and organisers, had a wonderfultime! The tournament is played over three wonderful golf courses, namely, Nelson, Greenacres and Motueka, with two days to be played on the highly-rated Nelson Golf Course which has hosted three of the top NZ amateur tournaments. They are the New Zealand Amateur Championships, the New Zealand Seniors Championships, and the New Zealand under 19’s championships. Every event resulted in glowing reviews for the course from all the players. The courses are all very different, giving the competitors a real challenge for the week. Nelson being a true links course, whereas Motueka is a mature parkland course, and Greenacres offering a mix of challenging waterfront and parkland holes. Tournament dates for 2019 TSB Nelson Festival of Golf are April 28-May 3 2019 with a rest day on the Wednesday to allow competitors to put their feet up, or get out and about to visit the many attractions the region has to offer or get some practice in for the next two days of golf. Non-playing partners are also very welcome to join us for the major prize giving dinner on the Friday evening. KOBORI DOUBLES UP AT CANTERBURY STROKEPLAY
Rangiora’s Kazuma Kobori doubled up at the 2019 Lamb & Hayward Canterbury Strokeplay last month at Pegasus Golf
Club when he won the men’s title to go with his recent Southland Strokeplay victory. He is odds-on favourite to complete the trifecta when he plays in the Otago Strokeplay this weekend, and will collect the major spoils from the House of Travel Tour Championship than runs across all three tournaments. Kazuma really won the championship on Saturday when he had fine rounds of 67 and 68 to give himself a five shot lead. The afternoon round in a stiff nor-wester was particularly impressive as most of his rivals struggled. All he needed was a 73 on Sunday in the 54 hole event to cruise home with a three shot victory. His closest rivals were Nic Kay and Reid Hilton. Nic will rue his second round 81 after he had shot a course record 64 (off the blue tees) in the morning. He closed with the best third round score of 66 but it was not enough to round up Kobori. Nic spoke of his recent lack of tournament play contributing to his second round score. Reid Hilton was solid with rounds of 68, 73, and 70. Tied for fourth were Hayato Miya, Josh Smith and David Kelly. In the end it was Kazuma’s consistent ball striking and error-free golf that won the day. He has carried on the form from representing Canterbury prior to Xmas in the NZ Interprovincial, and as he adds more power to his game, will be an even greater force to be reckoned with as he moves through to more national honours. He also won the Ron Clements Memorial Cup for best U19 male. The women’s championship turned into a two horse race between Juliana Hung and Roun Lee. They were tied after 36 holes and had a close battle throughout the final round. The pivotal hole was probably their 9th hole when Juliana made an uncharacteristic mistake off the tee on the par 5 18th and ended with a bogey while Lee made birdie. The two shot swing provided momentum for Lee and she would eventually finished two shots ahead of Hung. Rion Ishikawa finished 10 shots from the winner in third place.

Waitikiri greenkeeper Naomi Wallace was a runaway winner of the Women’s Masters Championship by 12 shots from Suzetter Eastmond and Kate Turner who tied second. Her first round of 72 was the springboard for the win. Players enjoyed fine sunny conditions on a well manicured Pegasus course, with a stiff norwester and easterly breeze keeping them honest. Thanks must go to the club, its members, staff and volunteers for assisting with the tournament. Also to our long-time sponsor – Stephen Parkyn and the team at Lamb & Hayward.
OTAGO/SOUTHLAND ROXBURGH SPONSPORED TOURNAMENT
The Roxburgh Golf Club hosted its Annual Holiday Sponsored Tournament on Saturday 29 December. A great day with 112 golfers from all over Otago and Southland, supported with Golf holiday makers from Canterbury and from as far north as Whangaparaoa. The Weather was excellent for golf – reasonably warm and sunshine – a real Central Day! The club attracted wonderful sponsorship so that as usual everyone went home with a prize. Plenty of local produce donated – cherries and gourmet blueber-
ries, and very fresh eggs. Without any of this sponsorship of course this tournament wouldn’t be the success it always is. During the year members of staff from Jack’s Point have spent a lot of time, at no cost to the Roxburgh Golf Club, helping overcome the flood damage incurred on the course in November 2017. They have created a new #14 green which could well become their new signature hole. Local contractors also donated a lot of time to help the club recover. SOUTHLAND STROKEPLAY
A first round 65 was enough to secure Canterbury’s Kazuma Kabori the Southland Strokeplay title for the second consecutive year. Played at SBS Bank Invercargill Golf Club last month, the championships attracted some of the top golfers from
Canterbury south – and the visitors proved too good for the locals. Kabori followed his excellent first round score with rounds of 73 and 70 to take the title. Otago’s Brandon Hodgson was runner-up and young Canterbury talent Hayato Miya was third. The top Southland player was Matt Tautari, who finished seventh. Up and coming Queenstown talent Sumin Kang took out the women’s title, four shots clear of runner-up, Invercargill’s Robyn Pullar. Paul Adams won the 36-hole seniors competition that ran alongside the championships. The Southland championships attracted more than 50 players and is the first event of the 2019 House of Travel Tour HOT Tour). Results from the weekend’s play will be combined with results of the Otago and Canterbury Strokeplay Championships (to be played over the following two weekends). The HOT Tour Champions are the lowest 162 hole aggregate scores (Men & Women) at the end of the 3 event tour.

What are HAWAII’s best golf courses ?
T
here is always a huge debate over which are the best golf courses in Hawaii and when you see the results you may be very surprised. We watch the PGA Tours Tournament of Champions played at the Plantation course at Kapalua each year then you look on line to see what are the best courses in Hawaii? Oh, a bunch of courses you have never heard of. The ratings are done by leading players and professionals, the reason you haven’t heard of many of these courses is simple, you can’t get to play them. For example, the number one rated golf course in Hawaii is Nanea, membership is by invitation of the owner, it’s as exclusive as Augusta National and they don’t want any publicity, some have rated it in the top 10 courses in America. There are 4 more top 10 Hawaii courses you may never have heard of Kukio, Hokulia, Kohaniki, Keolu. These courses are
very private it is almost impossible to get a game unless you are a members guest or live on course.
Mauna Lani Par 3
The most interesting fact is all these great courses are on the Island of HAWAII (the big island) about a 40-minute flight from Honolulu. The island of Hawaii has without doubt the best collection of golf course in Hawaii and there are a number ranked amongst the best that you can get to play. The iconic Mauna Kea, is the pick of them, built by Robert Trent Jones Snr in the 1960’s and redesigned by his son Reese Jones about 8 years ago, always ranked in the top 4 and regarded by many as the best course in Hawaii ,next door to Mauna Kea is the Hapuna Beach course designed by Arnold Palmer , the course has just completed a renovation including all new greens.Five minutes’ drive from Maua Kea Resort is the Mauna Lani’s fabulous North & South courses, the south course was home to the PGA skins game for many years, another 5 minutes’ drive are the two more excellent courses at Waikoloa Beach.
