Taking your handicap to Australia By Paul Gueorgieff Editor, Golfer Pacific NZ
I
visited Australia last month and I was a problem. Anybody who knows me will understand that. But this problem frustrated me. I knew what the problem would be because I had encountered it on previous trips to Australia. The problem started when I turned up to play golf and wished to join the club’s competition for the day. The guy in the pro shop asked me for what Australians call their golf index number. I explained that I was from New Zealand and that our identification number would not correspond with the Australian system. For example, our identification number comprises seven digits. The Australian identification number comprises 10 digits. The guy in the golf shop expressed surprise. I should point out the golf club was not in a major Australian city or popular tourist area. In other words they probably do not get a lot of international visitors who want to play in the club’s competition. I think the problem for the guy in the golf shop was he could not automatically enter me in the club competition. He would have to do so manually.
Anyhow I gave them my golf index for handicapping purposes and I was away. But it did feel uncomfortable that they were relying on my word about my golf index, even though they could easily look up my handicap on New Zealand Golf’s website. The reason I felt uncomfortable was if I performed well in the competition there might be doubt cast over my handicap. I had good reason to feel uncomfortable. Over the winter my handicap had ballooned to the highest it had been for years and if I returned to anything like my old form, I would be posting a very good score. Don’t ask my to explain the following. Success at home would not have been a problem. But success as visitor in a different country would have made me feel like the proverbial golf burglar. But I needn’t have worried. I posted a score of about 27 stableford points. But I was staying for nearly two weeks and would be playing in the club’s competitions four times a week — Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. What else do you do when you are on holiday? What say I performed well later on? And would you believe it but on my second competition day I posted 39 stableford points. As it turned out, that was not enough for a prize. The competition for the day was
a mystery doubles event where you were drawn with a partner at the end of day. I clearly did not draw a very good partner (or maybe they just left out that cheating New Zealander). My point here is in an ideal world it would be nice to have an identification number that you could take around the world with you. Or at the very least, Australia and New Zealand having a compatible system. You may be aware that a world handicapping system is due for implementation next year but that does not mean having one world database for all the world’s golfers. Instead it will be the same system for calculating a handicap, despite the differences in conditions throughout the world. I am told New Zealand has one of the best technical systems running our handicap system, so hopefully something similar will be in place for the world. New Zealand Golf chief executive Dean Murphy reported that for now, we know that New Zealand, England, Ireland, Wales and likely Australia and the United States will all digitally connect to make the transporting of scores and handicaps seamless. By the way the club I visited was the Geraldton Golf Club in Western Australia. Geraldton is one hour’s flight north of Perth and is where my youngest daughter lives. The golf course is very good and the people excellent.

Fox’s 29 equals second-nine record
yan Fox equalled the record for the lowest score of a second-nine in The Open’s 148-year history. Fox, the only New Zealander in the tournament, reeled off six birdies on the closing nine on the first day for a score 29. Though his back nine matched the best score on an inward half at an Open, it fell one shot short of the record for either nine. Englishman Denis Durnian carded a 28 on the front nine at the 1983 Open at Royal Birkdale. Fox said he had scored 29 for nine holes previously but not on a course that presented the difficulty that Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland did and it was some time ago. “Not for a long time, and not on a golf course like that,’’ Fox said. Fox admitted his caddie gave him a reprimand when Fox started wondering if such a score would be a record. “I did actually ask my caddie, had anyone shot 29 for nine holes in a major, and I’m sure that happened. He said, shut up, and just hole the putt.” Fox had been three over par through the first nine holes on the first day and he couldn’t put down the change in fortunes to anything in particular. “To be honest, I’ve been struggling lately,’’ he said. “On the front nine I had two bad shots and made a couple of bogeys. Didn’t hole anything. “I had a three-putt and sort of walked off the front nine sort of pretty pissed

off, to be honest. I holed an eight-footer for birdie on 12 and it just sort of relaxed me a little bit. And (then I) saw a couple more go in. “It was the first time I’ve had fun on a golf course for a while. You certainly don’t expect to do that. But it was nice to just get out of my own way and hit some decent golf shots and be a part of such a great event.” The often-used sporting term of being in the zone did not apply, Fox said. “To be honest, I don’t think I quite got in it. “I know that sounds strange, although I’ve probably been in it once or twice before. And it gets to a point of see it and hit it. And it certainly wasn’t like that.” Fox said the good form was perhaps a reflection of some work he had been doing on his swing. “I’ve been working pretty hard the last few weeks on some technical stuff and also some other stuff and just trying to get out of my own way and just focusing on trying to hit a golf shot and not about all the bad stuff.’’ Fox would have been very thankful for the 29 as on the second day he struggled with a four over par 75 and only made the mid-way cut by two shots. On the third day he had a one under 70 to jump up 15 places into the top 50 and on the final day he scored a meritorious two-under 69 to finish 16th with prize money of $US126,313. That equates to nearly $NZ187,000.

Dear oh dear, David
e won The Open in 2001 and was a former world No 1. But the seventh hole on the first day of last month’s Open at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland for David Duval is not one he would wish to remember. Duval scored 14 on the par five of 541 metres. It equalled the second-highest score for one hole in Open history and was the most taken in 69 years. He ended up with a score of 91 for the round, 20 over par, and was a clear last of the 156 competitors at the end of the first day’s play. It was easily Duval’s worst round in a major championship over 25 years, which was highlighted by his Open win at Lytham in England in 2001. But the 47-year-old is these days a part-time professional. He was ranked 2080th at the time, hadn't made a cut in four years and plays a limited schedule, concentrating on his successful career as a television analyst. It was just Duval's fourth event of the season, yet he began brightly, birdieing the first two holes. Then it plummeted like a lead balloon, with a quadruple bogey on the fifth, followed by the horror show two holes later. Duval hit two provisional balls off the seventh tee and thought he was playing his third ball until he realised at the
green it was "the wrong Titleist 2". The American is colour blind and, until a caddie in the group informed him, did not notice the number was red, when he was playing a ball with a black number. Duval went back to where the wrong ball had been played but could not find the correct ball, so was obliged to return to the tee to start all over again. Playing nine off the tee — after a twoshot penalty — he took six more shots. In all the madness, the marker initially put it down as a 15 and then, after the scorers erroneously decided the third provisional did not count, it was updated to a 14. Duval was as confused as anyone. "It was all a bit of a blur and fairly unsettling, obviously," Duval said, before revealing that tendonitis in his arm had "almost made it impossible to continue". "But I wasn't hurt enough not to finish," he added. "Unless I'm really hurt or sick, I post my score. It's just one of those god-awful nightmare scenarios that happened today and I happened to be on the wrong end of it." At least Hermann Tissie's 15 at the "Postage Stamp" in 1950 spared Duval the ultimate blushes. Tissie was 12 over par on that hole as the eighth at Troon is a par three.

Lowry becomes second Irishman to win The Open S
4
hane Lowry achieved a lifelong dream after holding his nerve in a Sunday battle with Tommy Fleetwood at The 148th Open at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. With The Open returning to Northern Ireland for the first time since 1951, it was fitting that a man from the island of Ireland should lift The Open’s coveted trophy of the Claret Jug. Lowry, from County Offaly in the Midlands Region of Ireland, did so by coping with wet and windy conditions on a memorable Sunday. The 32-year-old had built enough of a lead that he could enjoy the greatest walk in golf up the 18th fairway knowing the Claret Jug was waiting for him – becoming just the second Irishman to lift it, after Padraig Harrington in 2008 at Royal Birkdale and 2007 at Carnoustie. A scintillating 63 on the Saturday had given Lowry a four-shot lead over Fleetwood and more over the rest of the field but the Sunday of an Open puts pressure on every golfer and no advantage is safe until the final putt is sunk. A bogey on the first hole, coupled with a par from his English playing partner Fleetwood that could have been a birdie, reduced the gap to three strokes but from there, the Irish-

man gathered himself and produced consistently gritty golf to claim his first major title. Birdies on the fourth, fifth and seventh holes got Lowry as low as 18 under for the tournament, although three bogeys on the next six holes enabled Fleetwood to get back to within four strokes.
But things turned at the 14th as Lowry again bogeyed, only for Fleetwood to make a double bogey and a brilliant birdie by Lowry at the 15th allowed the crowd favourite to enjoy the final three holes with a hefty advantage. He eventually signed for a score of 72, which saw him end the championship at 15 under par and Fleetwood

could only offer a shake of the hand as he finished six strokes back. Tony Finau produced a superb par 71 to finish third at seven under but the expected charges from the likes of Lee Westwood, Brooks Koepka and Rickie Fowler never truly materialised. Westwood and Koepka ended in a tie for fourth at six under, while Rickie Fowler was a shot further back in joint sixth alongside Danny Willett who shot a 73 and Robert MacIntyre (68) and Tyrrell Hatton (69), who took advantage of the benign morning conditions. Last year’s winner Francesco Molinari finished strongly with a Sunday-best round of 66 that saw him leap up to three under for the championship and a tie for 11th. But it was Lowry’s day, as he soaked in the adulation from a partisan crowd walking down the 18th for the greatest moment of his golfing career. The Irishman was both a deserving and popular winner – just ask the fans in attendance, who brought a party atmosphere to the Northern Irish venue. Football chants and pop songs reverberated around the Dunluce Links following a scintillating Saturday that put the 32-year-old in control, before celebrations ratcheted up a notch after he sealed victory on Sunday. Lowry’s six-stroke victory meant he

NEWS became just the fourth player in the last 50 years – after Rory McIlroy, Louis Oosthuizen and Tiger Woods – to clinch his first major by more than five shots. Lowry said he could hardly believe how calm he was with the win. “I’m feeling unbelievably calm, to be honest,’’ Lowry said at his press conference. “I don’t know why. It’s not going to sink in for a couple of days, is it? “It’s just incredible to be sitting here with a trophy in front of me. Look at the names on it. Yeah, I just can’t believe — like I said, I couldn’t believe that it was me. I couldn’t believe it was happening. “I thought about it all day but I didn’t really let myself think about it until I hit my tee shot on 17. As soon as I hit that tee shot I knew that I couldn’t really lose a ball from there, and that’s how I felt.” Lowry said the reception from the fans was amazing. “Oh, my god. It was amazing. It’s hard to believe. It’s just hard to believe. “I think a lot of people from where I’m from, I spotted a few people in the crowd, and I think a lot of people made the last-minute journey up here this morning because I was leading. And it was just — it was great out there today. “It’s funny, I sometimes struggle to play in front of the home crowd and have done in the past, but not over the last few
days. I played lovely. It’s obviously very nice.” Lowry said avoiding a three-shot swing on the first green on the final day resulted in a calming influence. “Tommy has a great chance of birdie and I’m putting for bogey from eight feet. There’s a potential three-shot swing. He misses, I make, and there’s only one shot. That settled me an awful lot.” The walk down the 18th was unforgettable, Lowry said. “It was just incredible to walk down 18. The crowd is going wild, singing ‘OlÃ, OlÃ’. “I just couldn’t believe it was happening to me. It was nice, very nice of Paddy (Harrington) and G-Mac (Graeme McDowell) to be standing on the back of the tee for me. “And obviously to have all my friends and family. I spotted my family when I walked around the corner to have a look where the flag was, and I spotted them all at the back of the green. To be honest, I welled up a little bit and (my caddie) Bo told me to catch a hold of myself, I still have to hit a shot. Thankfully I hit a decent shot in there and two-putted. “I walked down there and I tried to soak it in as much as I could. It was hard to soak it in because it’s very surreal. It’s a very surreal experience going down there. Especially with, I’m sure there was, a lot of the crowd that wanted me to win today.”

The Open’s secondbiggest crowd
crowd of 237,750 for The Open Championship at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland was the second-biggest in the tournament’s 148-year history. The record number remains at 239,000, which was recorded at the 2000 championship at St Andrews in Scotland. It was evident the attendance figures at Royal Portrush would be very high when 61,000 people turned up for the practice days. That in itself was a record which surpassed the previous high for practice days of 52,000 set at Holyoake in 2006. Martin Slumbers, chief executive at The R&A, said: “This is a huge week not just for The Open but for golf as well. We are making history with a record attendance for a championship staged outside of St Andrews and the levels of excitement among fans this week have been phenomenal. “I said last year that big time sport needs big time crowds and we certainly have that at Royal Portrush as we stage the biggest sporting event ever to be held in Northern Ireland. The eyes of the sporting world are firmly set on Royal Portrush.” Of the 237,750 at Royal Portrush, 30,000 were under the age of 25, which included 21,000 children under the age of 16 who attended free of charge. The 149th Open will take place at Royal St George’s in England from July 12-19 next year. The Open’s biggest attendances are: 2000 – St Andrews, Scotland: 239,000 2019 – Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland: 237,750 2015 – St Andrews, Scotland: 237,000 2017 – Royal Birkdale, England: 235,000 2006 – Royal Liverpool, England: 230,000

NZ team of six for Asia-Pacific Amateur in China A
NEWS
squad of six has been named to represent New Zealand at next month’s Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in China. The team is led by Daniel Hillier from Wellington, who has played in three previous Asia-Pacific Amateur’s and last month was 24th on the world amateur rankings. He played in the US Open in June but did not make the cut. Hillier’s best finish in the tournament so far was sixth in 2017 when it was held at the Royal Wellington Golf Club at Heretaunga in Wellington. This year’s squad comprises three Hilliers. The other two are Bay of Plenty brothers Charlie and Harry Hillier but are not related to Daniel Hillier.
The China tournament will be Charlie Hillier’s third Asia-Pacific Amateur while it will be the first for Harry Hillier. New Zealand’s three other team members are Luke Brown from Northland, Kazuma Kobori (Canterbury) and Kerry Mountcastle (Wairarapa). Brown, winner of this year’s New Zealand Strokeplay Championship, has played in three previous Asia-Pacific Amateurs and finished inside the top 50 each time. Mountcastle will be making his third appearance in the tournament, including a ninth placing at Royal Wellington in 2017. Kobori will be making his debut in the Asia-Pacific but has already made his mark by winning a tournament
for professionals at the age of 17. That came in the NZ PGA Championship at Pegasus in North Canterbury in March. This year’s event is to be held at the Sheshan Golf Club in Shanghai from September 26-29. The winner of the event will be invited to play in the 2020 US Masters at Augusta National Golf Club and the 2020 Open Championship at Royal St George’s Golf Club in England. The runner(s)-up will receive an invitation to play in The Open Championship qualifying series for a chance to book their own spot in The Open Championship. The Asia-Pacific will be broadcast both live and through tape delay through the duration of the event.

N
ew Zealand Golf has named a mix of youth and experience to play for the Astor Trophy in Canada this month. Auckland is well represented with Wenyung Keh and Carmen Lim making the team while Wellington’s Julianne Alvarez makes her third Astor Trophy appearance and Canterbury’s Amelia Garvey is selected for her first. This year’s Astor Trophy takes place at Royal Colwood Golf Club in British Columbia from August 26 – September 1. Formerly known as the Commonwealth Tournament, the Astor Trophy is contested every four years between teams of top women amateur golfers from Great Britain and Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. The format is two foursomes and four (previously five) singles matches each day. New name for PGA Tour’s secondary golf circuit
I
t used to be called the Web.Com Tour. Now it’s called the Korn Ferry Tour. To put it simply, the stepping stone to the PGA Tour, the world’s richest golf circuit, has a new name. What’s Korn Ferry? It’s a Los Angeles-based global organisational consulting firm and it has signed up for 10 years as the main sponsor of the PGA Tour’s secondary golf circuit in the United States. Korn Ferry’s sponsorship took effect in June and extends through to the 2028 season. The Korn Ferry Tour will continue to award PGA Tour membership to the tour’s 50 leading players, including the top 25 from the regular season points’ list and the top 25 from the threeevent Korn Ferry Tour finals’ points list. PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said: “We welcome Korn Ferry to the PGA Tour family. “Our thanks to (Korn Ferry chief executive) Gary Burnison and his team for a partnership that will promote Korn Ferry’s mission of helping people and organisations exceed their potential, collaborating with a tour
that has proven to identify the next generation of PGA Tour talent over the last 30 years.” Korn Ferry also becomes a PGA Tour official marketing partner as the ‘official leadership development firm’ of the PGA Tour, PGA Tour Champions and Korn Ferry Tour. Additionally, Korn Ferry will assume sponsorship of the Korn Ferry Tour Championship presented by United Leasing & Finance in Indiana – the third and final event in the Korn Ferry Tour Finals. Burnison said: “We’re excited to partner with the PGA Tour. Our organisations are both all about talent – getting players and people to that next level and advancing their careers. “People will never discover their full potential until they are provided an abundance of opportunity. Korn Ferry and the Korn Ferry Tour provide that opportunity. “This sponsorship will further elevate our brand as a global organisational consultancy and extend awareness of our firm to new audiences around the world.” Korn Ferry develops and coaches 1.2 million people
a year, puts someone in a new job every three minutes and has worked with companies to evaluate and assess nearly 70 million professionals. The firm has offices in more than 50 countries and 8500 employees. Korn Ferry works with clients to design their organisational structures, roles and responsibilities. The firm helps them hire the right people and advise them on how to reward, develop and motivate their workforce. Korn Ferry also helps professionals at all levels navigate and advance their careers. Korn Ferry Tour president Alex Baldwin, the first woman to be named president of one of the PGA Tour’s six global tours, said: “This is a tremendous day for our organisation, and we are eager to work with Gary (Burnison) and his team as we continue to build the Korn Ferry Tour from the strong foundation already in place. “Korn Ferry has an impassioned desire to enhance the careers and brands of our players through this incredibly competitive tour. This partnership will allow us to further those goals while elevating the tour and our tournaments for our partners and fans.”

WINTER GOLF – THERE’S A BETTER WAY TO WIN For many club golfers the winter season brings boggy fairways, soft greens and climatic conditions that make you yearn for an armchair by the fire. Those lucky enough to play on a course that’s sand-based and on Northland’s (relatively) sheltered east coast have the best of it – and now have an added winning incentive to get out there and play through winter. Mangawhai, one of New Zealand’s most highly regarded courses, is just over one hour north of Auckland’s CBD and this popular club is currently offering a further reason for visitors to make this easy trek to a very special destination. Through the months of June, July, August and September, any NZ-resident golfer (affiliated or non-affiliated, but not Mangawhai members) who plays a paid 18-hole round gains free entry into Mangawhai’s 2019 promotion offering a trip for four golfers to play the beautiful Wairakei course and the Jack Nicklaus layout at Kinloch. Golf (one round for four players at each of these courses), carts and two nights luxury accommodation are included in the prize that has been expertly packaged by Experience Golf. Visitors to Mangawhai can enter each time they play a paid 18-hole round. The winner will be drawn in early October and Experience Golf will make all the arrangements at a time that suits the winner. The prize is valued at over $3,000 and takes the winning team to enjoy quality golf on two outstanding courses in the Taupo area. In itself, playing Mangawhai is a prize of great value. The sand-based championship layout offers groomed fairways, natural hazards and large greens that roll out superbly. The course quickly shrugs off even heavy rain, providing firm footing and a standard of winter golf that few others can match. Widely known as “Unbeatable Mangawhai”, the course’s challenge lies in the precise shotmaking required to master many of the holes, every one different in the way in which it rewards well thought out shots. Mangawhai is always busy so bookings for tee times are necessary on all days of the week. The club has a fleet of Yamaha electric carts, and hire clubs and trundlers are also available from the well-stocked Golf Shop. The club’s Lounge Bar offers a stunning panorama of the course and the Cafe serves an outstanding array of snacks and meals. For further details and tee bookings contact the Golf Shop at Mangawhai Golf Club, 221 Molesworth Drive, Mangawhai Heads. Phone 09 4314807 or email golfshop@mangawhaigolf.co.nz

Neville Idour from Dunedin has written for various golf magazines in the past and he joins Golfer Pacific with this piece about the putting.
Putting should be like writing your signature By Neville Idour
I
n the June edition of this magazine, editor Paul Gueorgieff wrote what gave cause for more comment on the often complicated (by both players and coaches) art of putting. Gueorgieff’s hyperbolic exaggeration of the ridiculous time some of the world’s best players (male and female) spend on their routines before both fairway shots and, in this case putting, is spot on. Let’s be frank, it is detrimental to the enjoyment of the game for fellow players, spectators and television viewers. Thankfully the United States television channels mostly avoid the known culprits until they are about to hit the ball. Who will forget Rory Sabatini’s (a brisk player) exit from the green some years ago before slow-coach Ben Crane had putted? In the women’s game Cristie Kerr, Haru Nomura, Ha Na Jang, Chella Choi and even our own Lydia Ko are mentioned as slow while Ben Crane, Kevin Na, Jason Day (nickname All Day), J B Holmes and Jordan Spieth are on the men’s anonymous players’ list as the slowest. Conversely, who is aware of anything time consuming when Brooks Koep-
ka, Matt Every, Dustin Johnson or New Zealand’s Ryan Fox are on the green? Who is not sick and tired of watching players stopping, marking, then repositioning their ball carefully with the line on it before standing for an age before making an easy tap in? So why was the sight of an LPGA player putting without a line on her ball a surprise, as Gueorgieff recorded in his column in June? It shouldn’t be because putting guru Dave Stockton has advocated this at his golf schools since the 1990s. Stockton is a multiple major winner on the PGA and senior PGA tours and was always one of the very best putters on tour. As he has said in the past: “I had to putt well as my game was not one of the longest.” However he had an outstanding short game. Stockton’s book “Unconscious Putting” is a gem and so clear and understandable. Does he know what he is talking about? Results say yes. Over the years he has influenced many of the world’s best including the likes of Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, J B Holmes, Justin Rose, Matt Kuchar, Adam Scott, Morgan Pressel, Annika Sorenstam
and Yani Tseng to name just a few. Mickelson went to him in September 2009 for two days saying: “He made putting simple for me again.” Up to that point on the 2009 PGA Tour, Mickelson had made just 13 putts of more than 20 feet all year. Next week at the Tour Championship he made nine, had 36 one putts in four rounds and won. There is no room for detail here but Stockton’s putting mantra is simple and likens it to one’s signature. We do it without thought, almost unconsciously. But try and do a signature slowly, copying it, and it will not flow easily. It’s the same for putting. Stockton said “putting is a small, simple stroke that relies almost completely on touch and feel. So when players concentrate on technique and mechanical thoughts they lock themselves out of that feel.” “Instead of being locked into these, they should be locked into two things — the line and rolling the ball to the hole, turning into an unconscious act like your signature.” Stockton believes reading the line does not need a lengthy frog dawdle around every part of the green. He says
read any break from behind the ball and then on the low side of the putt. Surely if the putter has a line on it this is a much better aiming point than a line on the ball. If the putter is on the correct line and the pace is right the putt should go in. Of course the other benefit is, the putting routine will be relatively quick and therefore the game becomes more pleasurable for all in every group. In harmony with Stockton, the quiet eye system is worth a look. Tests of significant numbers of players of all handicaps has shown immediate gains of up to two shots per round. Quite eye revolves around the eyes or gaze having just two focal points after setup — the hole or aiming point, no more than three times, then on the back of the ball for two or three seconds before the stroke. Quiet eye should remain on the green briefly after contact. If these experts thoughts can improve our putting and at the same time remove interminable time consuming routines and habits that statistically have little benefit, they may be worth a try.

Women members at Muirfield
GOLF NEWS
I
t is named The Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers. It is the oldest verifiable organised golf club in the world, with its records dating continuously back 275 years to 1744. Its home course is at Muirfield in Scotland and it has hosted The Open Championship, more commonly known as the British Open, 16 times. But a few years ago it was taken off the British Open roster when a vote to allow women to become members was defeated. The subsequent publicity resulted in another vote being taken and
now, just 275 years after it was formed, it has allowed women to be members. There are just 12 of them at this stage but club captain Alistair Campbell said they would be welcomed. “It is my great pleasure to announce that 12 women have been formally invited to join the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers,’’ Campbell said last month. “This marks a milestone in the club’s illustrious history, and we look forward to welcoming all of our new members to share in the great values and traditions of our club.”
Renovations to the clubhouse were required to include a ladies’ locker room. Campbell added: “We are delighted now to have completed the extensive renovation of the clubhouse which includes improvements to the whole building for the first time since 1980. We now have a clubhouse that matches our world-class golf course.” The renovated Muirfield clubhouse, which was originally built in 1891, also houses an exceptional display of the club’s history and memorabilia. It includes a showcase of the ‘13 Rules of
Golf’ – the earliest known written rules of the game, which were drafted by the club in 1744. Also on display is the Silver Club, the sport’s first trophy, which was presented in 1744. As is the tradition at HCEG, individuals who are invited to become members of the club must first be proposed and seconded by existing members and five referees. The club’s membership is then invited to write in support, or otherwise, of those put forward, who are personally known to them or have golfed with them.

New Zealand Golf commercial and marketing manager Jan Rowsell believes the alignment with Hyundai New Zealand will be a huge asset to enriching lives through golf. “The positive impact golf has on people, their families and communities is what drives us to be better every day, and to have a partner who shares this vision is unique and exciting,” Rowsell said. Hyundai New Zealand, in collaboration with New Zealand Golf, plan to develop personalised, statistical information that will be made available to members for the very first time.

Encouraging more young New Zealanders to play golf By Dean Murphy New Zealand Golf Chief Executive
T
he future strategic plan of our organisation is principally centred on inspiring more New Zealanders to participate in golf, especially women and girls and young people (5-18 years). There are other key strategies such as improving the profile and perception of golf and providing support to golf clubs and facilities. However, growing participation is the key driver of our future plan, which is soon to be published. To help New Zealand Golf on its journey to inspire more young people to play the game, a junior advisory group was formed in order to advocate for young New Zealanders and provide recommendations to New Zealand Golf on how it should approach the future with regard to young people in golf. The advisory group was made up of individuals with expertise in young people, golf, health, sport, sport development, programme development, coaching and marketing. The resulting new strategy for young
people in golf, which has been named Futures, is therefore the culmination of years of learning, consultation, listening to our young people and parents’ experiences in golf, and scanning good practice at home and abroad. Futures is about enriching the lives of young people by creating experiences that inspire a lifelong love of golf. Our firm belief is that if we can create a lifelong love of golf in young people, the future of our country will be in good hands. See more details of this outstanding new programme at www.lovegolf. co.nz/futures. Through the time and effort spent developing this programme, New Zealand Golf has been able to take a step back to look at what is best for the participants — rather than simply continuing to do what has always been done. One of the changes we have made in line with our new approach is to no longer host national under-13 championships. Firstly, and most importantly, New Zealand Golf is totally focused on supporting young people to play golf. We want more

kids, playing more golf, and growing a love for the game that lasts a lifetime. We know that the youth are the future of our game, and as such know our role is to grow their love for golf over time. We want them to become lifelong participants, so to do this we must consider their needs and not those of adults. Sport New Zealand and the recent research they have completed on youth sport has also guided us as we developed the Futures approach. We looked at this research, which included the voice of the participants, to see what they enjoy about sport, what they do not, as well as what aspects of development programmes and competition formats have a negative impact on their long-term involvement in sport. View the new website www. balanceisbetter.org.nz for further background and information on this detailed research. New Zealand Golf wants to ensure all children receive quality experiences in golf and better prepare young participants to reach their future potential as recreational or competitive golfers, but to do this we must put their needs first, stressing that: Childhood success does not reliably predict adult success We’re all different, and young people’s physical, emotional and social development doesn’t occur in a simple straightforward manner – or at the same speed. We need our competitive sporting opportunities to reflect this, rather than over-investing (both time and money) in just the kids who the show the most promise at a young age — an approach that overlooks late-developers. Identifying athletes and specialising early is taking its toll on young people Too many young athletes are specialising in one sport in the belief that this is the best way for them to develop into elite adults. In truth, burnout, overuse injuries and declining motivation are more
likely to be the outcomes of early specialisation. We need to delay selection decisions, and find ways to keep more young people involved in a range of quality experiences in competitive sport — and for longer. A focus on development should be emphasised over winning We need to stop focusing on high performance and overemphasising winning in youth sport. This approach is creating a lack of balance and leads to high workload and high pressure for our young people too soon. A focus on development and getting better is what young people want and what successful athletes and people focus on. It was felt that including an under-13 category at the New Zealand Age Group Championship was not in line with this approach. To this end New Zealand Golf has removed the under-13 component of our national age group championship to allow the focus of play and competition at this age and stage of development to be based at the club, hub and inter-club level, or other such junior events that focus on development and play rather than about winning. Players who are at a stage of development that sees them able to qualify and compete at higher age grade levels are of course welcomed and encouraged to play as part of their development. However, we believe creating an overly competitive environment for very young golfers is not the best path forward for our sport. This decision has not been popular with some parents. But we believe it is the right thing to do and take some confidence that the thinking behind this decision is backed up by the New Zealand Olympic Committee, Sport New Zealand, High Performance Sport New Zealand and a growing number of national sporting bodies throughout the world.

36 years ago, at a Leaner in Omanu Golf Club, a few regular “Leaners” often discussed the idea of a Tournament involving the top courses in the Western Bay of Plenty. They considered the five ingredients necessary to make such a vision work. Locality? Perfect. Quality of courses? Ideal. Climate? Outstanding. However, the event would also need a sponsor and a tournament director to complete the recipe. Retired bank manager and Omanu President Elwyn Mickell agreed to be the tournament director.

Additional to the massive final prize table, we have daily prize giving, plus daily draws for golf holiday packages, Asahi giveaways and Mills Reef wines. A welcoming function will take place, along with wine tasting evenings and a mid-week dinner party night. It is truly a celebration of golf that has stood the test of time and the 2020 event will be our biggest and best yet. We anticipate an over-subscription of entries, so we urge you to register early. such was the tournament’s popularity. Right from the early days the event attracted hordes from across the ditch and just last year approximately 80 players entered from Australia along with a regular contingent from the Cook Islands and a growing number from Asia. Eves Realty made the decision after the 2018 tournament to step down from their involvement after more than 20 years of fantastic support. The host clubs of Mount Maunganui, Omanu, Omokoroa, Tauranga and Te Puke were indebted to have Metlifecare Retirement Villages come on board in 2019 to ensure the survival of the fixture as naming rights sponsor, and they have agreed to support the 2020 event, which celebrates the 25th anniversary of the longest running multi-club stableford tournament in the country. Planning is underway for the 2020 Metlifecare 5 Course Classic and the longevity of the event is testament to the great number of golfers that return each year. The 2020 Metlifecare 5 Course Classic is located adjacent to the best beach in the country, which is a massive attraction. Complementing this is the vast variety of accommodation available with hotels, apartments, motels, motorhome parking and these days Airbnb and holiday homes all provide great

How long should you use a golf ball for? By Ian Hardie NZPGA Professional
H
aving been involved in the golf industry in one way or another for most of the last 30 plus years, I’ve had plenty of time to figure out some of the most common things that golfers want to know. The question of just how long you should use a golf ball is one of those common things that almost all golfers think about every now and then, but over the years I’ve observed a large variation in the logic that each golfer uses to decide when it should be done. I have to admit that for most of the time I have played the game, I had never considered that question as, like it is for most other golfers, the decision was always a fairly easy one. Either, the golf ball I had was played until it was lost (which happened a lot in my early years) or it was used until I decided that the cover and the printing on the golf ball had started to look a bit rough or worn. Like most golfers, I didn’t really have any scientific basis to my judgement but as it’s something that has been asked of me many times over the years, I have been doing some research into this question by going back through my collection of golf books, digging around on the internet and asking a few golf ball companies what their opinions are, which has been interesting to say the least. Basically, most golf balls can perform well for a lot more games than most of us use them for, probably two to four times
as long. Which would explain why it was difficult to find a conclusive answer from most of the golf ball companies, who only make money when you buy and use a new golf ball. Anyway, apparently, these days the cores of most of the golf balls are designed to withstand at least 100 strikes at 125 miles per hour before cracking. That’s seven rounds of hitting it harder than Bubba Watson with a driver, if you were wondering! Most golfers I have talked to generally use a ball for two to three rounds of competitive use before the cover scuffs enough and the printing starts to come off, which is probably less than a quarter of its useful life. According to some information I found, these minor scuffs or loss of printing that trigger most golfers to put a new golf ball in play, won’t affect performance. “As long as the cover is relatively smooth, maybe a little paint missing, you’re fine to play it,” said an unnamed source from a golf ball company. They then went on to say that their own company testing showed that a serious scuff could cost you six yards on a tee shot, which is only a 2% drop in performance if you hit a 300 yard drive! Hardly worth worrying about is it? Whichever way you slice it, all the golf balls available now are a far cry from what I first used as a young junior golfer. The Dunlop 65 Golf Ball A ball that had a rubber sphere as its core, with rubber band type winding

around it and a soft cover, which I assume was a rubber of some sort also, that was very easy to cut. I never realised until researching for this article that it was named in honour of Henry Cotton after he won his first British Open in 1934 at Royal St. George’s, and in doing so he shot a 65 in his second round, a feat that was commemorated by the “Dunlop 65” golf ball. It had nothing to do with being made in 1965 as most golfers thought was the case! Thinking back to those old golf balls, it’s amazing how things have changed dramatically over the years, the balls are now considerably more durable, as well as going a lot further than the old Dunlop 65 used to. The ones I use currently are actually made of five layers of technologically advanced polymers and other materials able to withstand mishits without cutting or deforming. So, after a bit of research I’ve decided
that the answer to this question is twofold. In terms of the actual mechanics, I would estimate that a golf ball can be used by most golfers with very little loss of performance for at least 10 to 20 rounds. Possibly even a lot more than that, if you don’t hit it as hard as Bubba Watson. But the real reason most of us change them sooner than that is driven by how it looks cosmetically. Due to the golf ball hitting all sorts of things during a round (like trees), damage from the grooves of our clubs and the effects of the sand in bunkers, the covers and the printing get scuffed and the ball starts to look old after a couple of rounds. As good golf is fuelled by confidence, most of us change the ball at that point, so we can be confident that the golf ball will perform for us. How long should you use a golf ball for? It’s up to you these days. Play well.

PGAPARS PGA professionals growing golf participation world-wide pga.org.nz
By Dominic Sainsbury New Zealand PGA General Manager
I
t is a well know fact that golf club memberships have been in a decline for more than 10 years now in New Zealand. With most clubs in New Zealand dependent on membership subscriptions to maintain financial sustainability, we need to address the issue and buck the trend. How do we grow participation? Here are some thoughts. Role models. We are very lucky that our sport has so many great PGA Tour players across the women’s and men’s games and at all ages (the seniors/champions tour). We only have to look at the success of our major championships — not just the showcasing of golfing talent but also the attendance of avid golf fans. For example, the US Masters tournament is sold out every year and this year’s Open Championship was sold out within weeks of the tickets coming on sale. We also have great role models as club professionals throughout New Zealand. A number of these professionals were
tour players and are now giving back to growing the game at their club and in their region Give golfers what they want. The PGA Tours, PGA associations, the Royal & Ancient and the United States Golf Association are all working together with a focus on scheduling major events and tournaments for better engagement with the golfing public and to keep golf at the height of the media’s attention for sustained periods of time. We are also working on a number of golf initiatives and programmes to capitalise on the increased media attention and wonderful PGA Tour players. The She Loves Golf and Love Golf promotions in New Zealand have been brilliant for exposing our game to new players with a number of PGA professionals rolling out these programmes across the country and gaining new members and participants from embracing the relaxed rules and fun innovative formats of play. We need to continue roll out events and programmes that give new and traditional golfers what they want. The PGA professional is committed to
embracing innovation and offering not just the traditional stableford, net and gross competition but fun team competitions based on the ambrose, foresomes, two ball better ball, teams’ challenges (captains versus presidents) and many more great ways to play. We have a number of clubs that are embracing new events and competitions with great success and the New Zealand PGA domestic pro-am circuit is testament to this. An emphasis on fun and social connection keeps us coming back for more. Golf fact. The average club hit into a par four on the US PGA Tour is a nine iron. As the US PGA Tour makes courses longer the players simply get stronger and improve their technique. Courses on the tours are getting longer yet the tour players are hitting shorter clubs into the green. This is an area where we have a disconnect at our clubs as the average club golfer is hitting a six iron for their second shot into a par four. Two ways to address this is for the club golfer to learn from the tour player and hit the ball further (by improving technique, getting stronger and
by having correctly fitted equipment) or play the course from forward tees. If you do both you might just find that golf becomes a lot more fun. Prize time. The PGA professional is committed to growing participation and we would love your feedback on what you would like to see more of at your club or what the best day on the golf course over the past year was. Email your feedback to admin@pga. org.nz with all entries going in the draw for a PGA goodie bag. To find your nearest PGA professional head to www.pga. org.nz/find-a-pga-pro

ONEKAKA LINKS GOLF CLUB: THE MOUNTAIN COURSE by Chris Castle, President, Onekaka Links Golf Club
Onekaka Links Golf Club is a decade old and after 10 years, a body of opinion has evolved among the membership that seeks new challenges. Accordingly the Course Committee was instructed to approach the best golf course architects available. The brief was to offer a course with a completely different character. After extensive consultation we can announce that a completely different layout (over the same footprint but with 18 new holes) has been devised. Both courses co-exist. The old course (The Links) was difficult but playable if carefully managed. Even then (and the course has been played on multiple occasions by several of the best amateur golfers in the country) the course record is 60, only four under par and one under the course rating. The Mountain Course will break your heart, then your spirit. It can’t be played safely. Actually it can’t be played at all by many golfers. Why is it so difficult? That will become obvious after reading the detailed course guide but in summary it features: • Serious trouble is constantly in evidence close to the driving lines • We have nine doglegs that can’t be overpowered by a long hitter • A number of testing teeshots (mostly steeply uphill over cliffs) and/or through narrow shutes • A binary outcome if these shots are not close to perfect. Short or slightly offline is dead and there are no friendly drop-zones • Other wind affected elevation changes that rigorously test player perceptions • A requirement for exceptional distance control for a number of second or third shots • Green side hazards are punitive and the approach shots are from much further away than on the Links Course. These attributes will erode the confidence of most golfers (as they have already done so over the much easier Links course during the last decade). As a result melt-downs will be very frequent and inevitable. For similar reasons only five players have played to their handicap on the Links Course in that ten year period. With the dual objectives of providing golfers with a new challenge, and also creating an income stream for the Club derived from the recovery and sale of lost golf balls, Onekaka Links Golf Club is pleased to announce the opening of the Mountain Course. In summary: 1. We expect most people to play it only once. 2. We don’t expect that the course record will be much under par. 3. We expect that 99% of players won’t be able to achieve a net par round.
ONEKAKA LINKS GOLF CLUB MOUNTAIN COURSE – 4 HOLE SAMPLE
Hole Two – 273 metres An uphill slightly dog-legged par four that will play at least 15 metres longer than its measured distance. The hole bends to the left in parallel with the seaside cliffs with the fairway crossed by ponds about 50 metres short of the green. The tee shot to a hidden, quite narrow fairway is particularly intimidating and needs to carry at least 170 metres. The cliff can be avoided by going well to the right but there are trees present there and the second shot is much more difficult from that angle. The flag position is normally back right in a shallow section of the green with a bunker in front and a penalty area two metres behind the green. There is plenty of green to the left but undulations make the approach putt more challenging.
View from the tee – the ideal line is over the punga fern on the cliff edge
The gap is about 10 metres but it looks narrower than that. There is a penalty area on the right edge of the green, so long and leftish is the line. This green is rarely hit in regulation and the shot from the drop zone is no picnic either. Short doesn’t work well
Tee shot must be straight and neither short nor long
Water Hazard (penalty area) over the back
Hole Eight – 140 metres Another really difficult and intimidating tee shot hit mostly over the ocean to a green perched on the edge of a cliff. Left is dead, long and straight is passable, anywhere right (long or short) is likely in a pond or a massive cross bunker. The green is huge but a direct line to the hole may be interrupted by greenside trees or the cross bunker which meanders for 30 metres along the back edge of the green.
Easy once you get up there
Hole 12 – 333 metres A straightforward tee shot to a wide fairway followed by a completely blind second downhill to a undulating green protected by five bunkers. One of these bunkers and an adjacent Pohutakawa tree are in the middle of the green. There are three distinct zones on this green and four putts can happen very quickly if you finish up in the wrong zone. The second shot is very affected by the wind and precise distance control is challenging.
Second shot from ~ 120 metres – the line is at the twin high hills
Second shot to back right flag position
Hole Five – 110 metres A really intimidating tee shot steeply uphill to a hidden green with huge gum trees on both sides.
Tee shot
The 12th green – surrounded by 5 bunkers and ocean behind
ONEKAKA LINKS GOLF CLUB
Arguably New Zealand’s two most exclusive courses – at Onekaka in Golden Bay Established in 2009, the Onekaka Links The new Mountain Course is far more experience offers Kauri Cliffs/Pebble Beach- challenging with a number of truly like vistas and truly memorable golf. intimidating holes. There are two 18-hole courses, the Links Course contains one par 5, eight par 4s and nine par 3 holes and the Mountain Course has two par 5s, eight par 4s and eight par 3s. All the holes are different despite the tiny footprint the Club occupies. Both courses feature a number of fairly extreme green locations, including one double green and a triple green, severe elevation changes and penal bunkering. Either the ocean, ponds, cliffs or metre high rough are adjacent to all greens. The Links Course has been in operation for a decade and while not a long course it’s rarely been conquered.
The green fee of $100 per head (for 18 holes - $150 for 36) for a minimum of 4 players covers: • Drinks and snacks at the end of the round • Up to 6 holes practice before the first round • Exclusive use – no other players on the course that day • Golf cart and electric trundlers, laser distance finder • Two course guides (the club champion) and forecaddie (essential to track a number of blind tee shots) • A top-up supply of golf balls (after 5 per person have been lost...)
Both courses are only open for weekends in the summer and bookings must be made at least a month in advance with Chris Castle at 021 558 185 or chris@widespread.co.nz | Web: www.onekakalinks.com

NORTHPINE 34TH ANNUAL BREAM BAY CLASSIC 2019
A field of 80 players teed off on a perfect Saturday morning last month, clear skies, no wind and the course in immaculate order. There were 41 competitors in the open division, 27 in the masters and 12 in the ladies. On Sunday the weather blew up a storm and the competition was cut back to 36 holes. Anna An from Muriwai posted rounds of 73 and 69 for a total of 142, six shots clear of the runner up Michelle Lee from Gulf Harbour on 148. The masters winner was Iain Power from Northland – 72 and 70 for a total of 142. Waipu’s Nathan Jacoby was runner up on 149. Matt Morris from Taupo was the early leader in the open division however he fell off the pace in the second round to finish fourth on 142. He was beaten on a countback by Dale Clarke from Sherwood Park in third place. Three time Classic winner, Luke Brown from the Pines, finished tied for first place with last year’s winner Tyler Wood from Palmerston North. This provided great spectator interest as they proceeded to a playoff and after five extra holes Tyler made birdie to Luke’s par to take the title. Matt Morris won the lucky draw of a Kauri Cliffs voucher. Vaughan Witten from Golf Northland announced the teams to play North Harbour at Mangawhai at the end of July and Waipu youngster Kaiser Jacoby was surprised and delighted to be included in the Junior team to join his mum Kylie and dad Nathan to take up the challenge for Northland. This tournament is generously sponsored by Northpine, a local timber company and wholesaler who supply retailers throughout the country. Northpine is a family owned business who employ a large number of locals and are involved with almost everything that happens in the Bream Bay area particularly sport, education and arts. After a ten year drought Walton ladies have won the East Zone round robin Wills Cup title. The matchplay handicap competition was played over five rounds, which saw the team take the lead from the second round. The team of six women remained focused through each round, gaining a greater lead after each outing. It was a fantastic team effort by the pool of 14 women who played. The final is to be played August 9th once the other three zones have established their respective finalists.

2019 WAIKATO AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIPS WINNERS FOUND
HUNTLY GOLF CLUB GET READY FOR STROKE PLAY CHAMPS
Following Matchplay Champs in June and Pairs Matchplay throughout July, Huntly members are preparing to play their 72-holes Stroke Play Champs over four consecutive weeks in September. This will be the first club Stroke Play Champs in five years and new members joining the club before the end of August
The Annual Waikato Age Group Champs were held on the 15th and 16th of July at the Cambridge Golf Club. This competition brings together some of the best under 14 boys and girls, under 16 boys and girls and under 19 boys and girls talent from around New Zealand and Asia.
The tournament is run across 36 holes over two days with gross and nett prizes for the winners of each division. In the under 14 girls division Amy Im showed her talent to completely outclass her division winning by 22 shots in the gross with a score of 148. In the net competition Gemma Towers took out the top prize with a net score of 145. The under 14 boys was dominated by another standout performer. Daniel Freeman won the gross with a score of 148 from the runner up Seojoon Yoo on 159, and Waikato’s Ben Ambler and Nihal Bhular finished third and fourth with scores of 160 and 162 respectively. The net was won by Waikato’s Isaac Steele with two net scores under par of 68 and 70 to win by two shots. The under 16 girls was much closer with Hayoung Lee pipping Yeonsoo Son by three shots to win with a gross score of 146. The net was also a close run thing with Kelly Wu claiming victory with a score of 143. The Waikato Age Group Championships is a nationally recognised tournament with players travelling long distances to compete. This reputation enables the tournament to attract the best players in the country. Fittingly the under 16 boys division was bolstered by the presence of New Zealand representative Jayden Ford. Jayden had a fantastic tournament in which he was pushed all the way by David Kim and Jeff Lee. Jayden shot the equal lowest first round (tied with Luke Kidd in the U19) combining with a second
round of 69 to come out on top with a score of 137. David Kim finished in second on 142. The net competition in the under 16 boys was taken out by Waikato’s Ben Wright with a net score of 139. In the under 19 girls division there were two tied after round one with Angela Ju and Caitlin Maurice both shooting 73. Angela carded a tidy round of two under par 70 in the second round to narrowly beat Caitlin Maurice who finished with a 71. Angela’s two round total was 143. The nett winner for the under 19 girls was Waikato and Cambridge home town girl Holly Rutherford with a net score of 150. The boys under 19 division showed early promise of scintillating golf. After losing his first shot of the tournament Waikato’s Luke Kidd went on to card a four under par 68. Mitchell Kale of Tauranga and Logan Madden also of the Waikato both managed two under par 70s. Logan Hooper and Jarrod Millar both carded even par rounds of 72, with Josh Morris one back with a first round 73. There were some fantastic second round scores. James Tauariki bounced back after a disappointing opening round of 78 to card a tournament best round of 67. In the end the local Waikato lad got the job done by shooting a final round 70. Luke Kidd was crowned the Under 19 Waikato Age Group Champion for 2019. Waikato’s Joshua Forrest had two mightily impressive rounds of net 67 to win the under 19 boys net division by four shots from Todd Higgs, another proud Waikato golfer.

BAY OF PLENTY GOLF WAREHOUSE KAWERAU 54 HOLE TOURNAMENT
Over Queen’s Birthday Weekend the Kawerau Golf & Squash Club hosted the annual 54 Hole Golf Tournament. The main sponsor this year was the Golf Warehouse. We had over twenty generous sponsors that enabled us to offer more than $10,000 in prizes. There were more than sixty prizes handed out at prize giving. We also had 55 twos over the weekend The Kawerau Golf Course was in fantastic condition and a huge thank you has to go to all of the people who work so hard to ensure that this weekend goes off without any problems. Everyone who works at the club do so on a voluntary basis. From the grounds people, to the kitchen people, to the bar staff. Everyone works together to provide a fantastic course and a fantastic atmosphere for all to enjoy. The tournament had a full field of 128 players from all over the North Island and even had two players from Australia. The senior division had 54 players with 35 playing off a handicap of five or better. There would be very few clubs in New Zealand that host a tournament with such a huge field of senior players. We had a lot of Bay of Plenty pennant players in the field. On Saturday the day started off beautifully with no frost and a fair bit of sunshine. Unfortunately it deteriorated during the day and we had around an hour of very cold and wet weather. This affected some of the scores but not all of them. The leaders after round one were Tuakana August in the seniors, Daryll Walker and Hata Kaipara in the interme-
diates and Willie Copeland and Mikaere Smith in the juniors. Sunday morning the weather was brilliant with sunny conditions and not much wind. The players kept the field moving all day and we got all players into the clubhouse well before darkness. There were some really good scores and there were also some not so good scores. The overwhelming chat in the clubhouse was that this is one of the best tournaments in the country. Results: Senior Nett Winner – Tuakana August 198, R’Up – Glenn Tait Senior Stableford Winner – Liam McFarlane 112, R’Up – Steve Brooky Senior Gross Winner – Ryan Maxwell 214, R’Up – Jordan Rangihika Intermediate Nett Wiiner – Hata Kaipara 208, R’Up – Chas Andrews Intermediate Stableford Winner – Shaun Wortel 115, R’Up – Lucky Karekare Intermediate Gross Winner – Teina Te Kopua 241, Dharmen Singh Junior Nett Winner – Willie Copeland 198, R’Up – Bill Basher Junior Stableford Winner – Chris Hiwarau 116, R’Up – Dave Waetford Junior Gross Winner – Louis Hahipene 262, R’Up – Tiwai Dowie The winners of the trophies were:

MOUNT MAUNGANUI GOLF CLUB 72 HOLE MIXED FOURSOMES STANLEY CUP
The Stanley Cup was first played for in 1974 and continued through to 1987 with a break between 1988 and 1991 when there was no competition. Mixed foursomes has in the past enjoyed considerable success and participation by players playing in the tournaments at clubs throughout the Waikato and Bay of Plenty particularly noted for the camaraderie and friendships developed. Terry Bryant led the development of foursomes at the Mount Maunganui Golf Club, having been involved with the same event at Waitomo Golf Club and a number of other clubs with a rotation schedule of mixed foursomes events. Ray Horsfall became Tournament Convenor in 2006 and, with John Uden as support organiser, has managed the tournament through to the current 2019 event. Mount Maunganui Golf Club Mixed Foursomes, unlike some other clubs, has stood the test of time managing to fill between three divisions (48 pairs) and six divisions (96 pairs). 2009 registrations had six divisions (96 pairs). 2010 followed with five divisions (80 pairs). Pacific Coast Village, the naming sponsor extending back to pre-2008 continues its association with the tournament as the Pacific Lakes Village 2019 Mixed Foursomes Golf Tournament. Four pairs have won the Stanley Cup on more than one occasion, M & L Flattery six times, A Reynish & J McDonald four times, O & P Kendall and F & T Howard three times each.

MANAWATU-WHANGANUI RANGATIRA 1ST & 2ND IN SILVER PENNANTS
Silver and District Pennants has now wound up for the season. District Pennants had a slightly different format this year with semi-final rounds and a final round. The top four teams played off with Marton winning against Rangatira, and Whanganui and Castlecliff halving. Whanganui scraped through on countback. The final was then Marton versus Whanganui. Whanganui won three games with Marton two. In Silver Pennants the final round was really all about who was going to get second! Rangatira Pink had first place already sewn up with 14 points. Rangatira had 11 points while two teams were on 10 and two on 9. With a half and one point Rangatira Blue did enough to get second, while Levin had a win and two points, enough to jump up from 9 to 11 points and therefore third!

Tara Raj was in great form recently by winning the Ruth Middleton strokeplay title at the Matamata Golf Club. Played last month, this event had a high calibre field which included New Zealand rep Carmen Lim and highly ranked Fiona Xu. Raj finished one shot ahead of Fiona Xu, after Xu failed to make an up and down on the final hole, Raj’s par on the last playing alongside Xu, was enough for one of her most impressive victories to date. Raj’s three round total was 210 with rounds of 71, 71 and 68. Manawatu-Whanganui rep Zhuoyi Hu was also competing and finished in 11th equal place with rounds of 75, 74 and 77.

KAPITI GOLF CLUB 2019 CLUB CHAMPIONS
The Finals for the 2019 Kapiti Golf Club
Champs were held on Sunday 26 May – results over 36 holes unless stated. Men’s Senior: Tim Roper beat Andy Sherborne 1 up Intermediate: Kaliff (Snoop) Klock beat Nigel Mooney 4 & 3 Junior: Paul Wilson beat Stan Williams 5 & 4 (18h) Women’s Silver: Katrina Bullen beat Sue Green 4 &3 Bronze: Robyn Stringer beat Hine Sullivan In the senior division Tim came back from being four down, and then three down after 18 holes. After 27 holes it was all square, and went to the last hole. Snoop was always just ahead in his match, and a miracle shot on the 11th (29th) hole made his lead unassailable. Paul raced to an early lead which he held throughout the match. In the Women’s, Katrina raced out to a five up lead, and although Sue came back, she couldn’t cut the lead in time. Robyn also seemed to hold a two hole lead throughout her match. WELLINGTON NOTICEBOARD 17 Aug

SOUTH OTAGO CHAMPIONSHIPS
Tapanui Golf Club hosted the 2019 South Otago Championships last month with a total of 53 participants spread from Under 14 to Veterans age. Although the weather dampened as the day went on, spirits remained high in the field as Tapanui Golf Club did a great job keeping the players warm and well fed. In the damp conditions, the course was playing long, with many demanding tee shots. Senior Champion Matt Crawford displayed a gritty performance to stay level with the card for most of the round, before letting a couple slip coming home. However, his two over 74 was enough to clinch the best gross in a field that included defending champion Brandon Hodgson, and Otago No.1 Inia Logan. Throughout the field and across all divisions, many players struggled to shoot under their handicap, but the best net score of the day came in the veteran’s section with local Bill McCall posting a net 68 to claim the coveted Veterans Plate.
