The differences between playing at home or away

I

By Paul Gueorgieff Editor, Golfer Pacific NZ

used to place little importance on whether playing at home or away when it came to interclub competition matches. If my team was beaten at an away course, I always thought it was a poor excuse it was in part because we were playing at the opposition’s home course. My argument was that we all teed from the same position and we were all hitting to the same hole. If I hit my ball into the trees that was clearly my fault, not the opposition’s. It was obvious the trees were there. If my opposition hit his ball into the water, that was his fault. It was obvious the water was there. The home team does not have thousands of fans cheering

them on. The only spectators, at my level of competition, are the other three people in my group. In my grade of interclub competition we have 10 members per team. We play singles and doubles at the same time. There are 10 points up for grabs in the singles’ events and five points up for grabs in the doubles’ matches. That makes for a total of 15 points. In years gone by if we got a total of six or seven points in an away game, my fellow team members would often tell me that was a good result. I used to say that six or seven points represents a loss and that isn’t a good result. But after nine of our 10 games in this year’s interclub competition, at the time of writing, I am now having second thoughts about the advantages of playing

at home and the disadvantages of playing away. At the time of writing, my team is leading our grade by the very narrow margin of half a point. A total of 2-1/2 points separates the top three teams and all three were to be playing away in our final games. In other words, who would win the grade was on a knife edge. We have only once won away and that was a very moderate victory of 8-1/2 to 6-1/2. The second-placed team, at time of writing, had had one narrow win (8-7) away and one narrow loss at home (6-1/2 to 8-1/2). The third-placed team, at time of writing, had never won away and always won handsomely when at home. One of the teams in our grade, from a nine-hole golf course,

had gained no more that 2-1/2 points when playing away and not scored less than 10 points when playing at home. They are startling statistics when it comes to home and away matches. I understand when you are playing at home you know the nuances of the course and you know where to aim or, perhaps more accurately, you know where to avoid. I also understand that playing at home you understand the speed of the greens better than a visitor. But I still see the golf course as an even playing field although the statistics from my interclub grade this year are giving me second thoughts. For your information our final round of competition is on August 15.

playoff was needed to find the winner of the Muriwai Open in Auckland — and the victor was an amateur golfer. Three players were tied for the lead at 10 under par at the conclusion of the regulation four rounds of play and it was 21-year-old James Hydes from Gulf Harbour in Auckland who came out on top. Hydes began the fourth round three shots behind the leaders and had not made up any ground when at par through the first nine holes with blustery weather making for difficult playing conditions. But he rattled off four birdies in a row from holes 11-14 to get back into contention and standing on the 18th tee he was tied for second with Jordan Loof and one shot behind leader Ryan Chisnall. Chisnall, however, let victory slip through his fingers with a bogey on the 18th hole. That allowed Loof and Hydes, with pars on the 18th, into a three-way split for the lead. Hydes only scored par on the first playoff hole but that was enough to secure victory and become just the seventh person in the history of the Charles Tour, sponsored by Jennian Holmes, to win as an amateur. Hydes said the win at the beginning of the month was a dream come true. “This feels unreal,’’ Hydes said afterwards. “I can’t believe I’ve just won a professional event. I’m speechless right now.” Although he was three shots back at the beginning of the day, Hydes knew the conditions would favour the style of golf he likes to play. He said believing in himself all day was key to getting the job done. “I knew it was going to be windy out there today and I’m a pretty good player in the wind,’’ he said.

“I just needed to back myself the whole day and I knew I would be a chance if I could do that. “I just stuck to my game plan and tried to have as much fun as I could. It was pretty easy doing that with a couple of mates Chizzy (Chisnall) and Jordy (Loof). Hydes had recently been selected for the New Zealand Golf national academy, and it’s been a goal of his to win a Charles Tour event before he turned professional. He’ll now turn his attention to the remaining Charles Tour events that resume in October.

Is DeChambeau becoming the PGA Tour’s first bodybuilder? Not by a long shot GOLF NEWS

By Jim McCabe

W

e have been here before. Honestly, we have. That isn’t to say that Bryson DeChambeau should be casually labelled a sequel, much like it probably isn’t fair to dismiss “The Dark Knight” as just another in a parade of Batman movies. Most likely, Christian Bale would prefer to stand on his own, disassociated from Batman actors before him. Bale brought a riveting energy to the leading role. Never had Batman jumped out at us like that. Likewise, at no point over the past few weeks have you witnessed DeChambeau’s full ensemble on the golf course and said to yourself, “He reminds me of ol’ Stranny, no?” “Ol’ Stranny” being the memorable Frank Stranahan and, no, people aren’t comparing DeChambeau to Stranahan – mostly because so few people in today’s world have an inkling about historical perspective. But it behoves us, in this rush to embrace the transformation of DeChambeau from “a golfing scientist” (his term, by the way) into “the hulk,” to take a deep breath and pay respect to golfers – from Stranahan to Gary Player to Tiger Woods – who blazed this fitness trail in which he now walks. No question, the 26-year-old Californian is navigating in his own unique way and achieving results with exponentially different numbers, but the essence of what he’s doing has been done before and it recycles a topic that’s been discussed for years in golf. Is weight-training and adding muscle important for a golfer? Emphatically, DeChambeau says yes and he worked out three times every day of the pandemic-forced break putting on weight. Three months later, he returned to the first PGA Tour tournament since March looking thicker than a Redwood tree. On social media, fans

took guesses at what he weighed, and 300 pounds (136kgs) was a popular pick. “They were quite a bit off,” laughed DeChambeau, who said he added 20 pounds (nine kilograms). But if the pre-season media guide was correct in reporting his weight at 205 pounds and he was being honest in saying his weight was between 235 and 240 pounds, it means he added 30 to 35 pounds (about 13-15kgs). Then again, golf fans don’t care about those numbers. They are only focused on those digits being spit out with ev-

ery drive. DeChambeau is hitting it 320 metres as nonchalantly as fish swim and for those who are as “inside golf” as you can get, the ball speed factor of 305-310 kph. is basically uncharted waters. (The average PGA Tour player is at about 274kph). “Holy $*&@,” said Rory McIlroy, when he got his first eyewitness account, paired with DeChambeau in the final round of the Charles Schwab Challenge at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas. It was the tour’s re-entry into competition in this age of covid-testing and spectators were not

allowed. But McIlroy, no slouch off the tee himself, was impressed. “He hit a couple drives on Sunday where Harry (Diamond, McIlroy’s caddie) and I just looked at each other and we’re like, that was unbelievable.” While it is difficult to fathom that DeChambeau is hitting it 30 metres past someone as powerful as McIlroy, here’s what is easy to comprehend, because the numbers are already in the books. At Colonial, DeChambeau scored 66 in round four, McIlory scored 74. DeChambeau finished a shot out of a playoff to decide

Australian Open considered for early next year T

he Australian Open will not be played in 2020. Golf Australia operations manager Simon Brookhouse remains very hopeful that Australia’s national championship, the fifth oldest in professional golf, will still be played this summer. “These are very challenging times for all Australians and the uncertainty the global pandemic has caused makes it very difficult to be definitive in relation to future dates at this time,” Brookhouse said. “We will continue our positive on-going discussions with our major stakeholders which include the Victorian government, our corporate partners, the PGA Tour of Australasia and other international tours about po-

4

tential dates. However, it must be noted that there are many unknowns at the moment, which is problematic.” The 105th edition of the Australian Open was to have been held in November, with multiple dates having been on the table. But Brookhouse said public health considerations had been the main reason behind making the decision to postpone. “Then, when you consider the re-scheduled major championships, particularly the US Masters from 12-15 November, assembling the customary world-class field was also becoming increasingly difficult,” he said. “Unfortunately, it is not a simple matter of whether

August 2020

or not we could co-ordinate any international stars to visit. The uncertainty of the quarantine requirements for any players coming from outside Australia needed to be considered. These requirements would undoubtedly have an impact on our homegrown heroes before they would be able to consider playing, too. “With all that in mind, we would like to think we could still play the Australian Open this summer and will work with the host, Melbourne’s Kingston Heath Golf Club, to find a date suitable for all. “However it may have to be in the January-March 2021 window with so many variables still to play out.”

the tournament winner and concluded four rounds at 14-under. Throw in the next two tournaments – the RBC Heritage and Travelers Championship, where DeChambeau was eighth and sixth, respectively – and his first 12 rounds back have produced 11 efforts in the 60s, a scoring average of 66.5, and a cumulative count of 46 under par. Thus has the praise flowed. Phil Mickelson: “To watch someone hit it that hard and that straight, it’s impressive.” Justin Rose: “Pretty unique. You can tell . . . he’s obviously trained speed.” Webb Simpson: “It’s phenomenal what he’s done to be able to put on that much muscle mass and increase swing speed and ball speed, but still have great control. Really impressive.” Want something more impressive? DeChambeau’s bank account has beefed up, also – to the tune of $US785,936. For media members and fans who have embraced the uniqueness of DeChambeau since he turned pro in 2016, a year after winning both the NCAA Championship and US Amateur, this muscle, sculptured physique, and ball-speed stuff is delectable. But for those who’ve never really warmed up to a guy who majored in physics, talks openly about testing his golf balls in Epsom salt, insists on every iron in his bag being the same length, and tosses “oxygen depletion” into casual conversations, it is further cause for hesitation. Again, the remedy for both sides is to calm down and enjoy the show. And consider that DeChambeau doesn’t have the market cornered when it comes to, shall we say, eccentric tendencies? Which is a perfect segue into Stranahan, a guy who at 71 was still pumping iron and bodybuilding in 1993 when DeChambeau was born. “He was very peculiar,” said Jim Gaquin, who was the travelling secretary for the PGA Tour in the 1950s. “But he did think he had some sort of formula to live a long time.” In fact, Stranahan made no secret of his belief that he was going to live to be 120 years old. He based that on the devotion he paid to good health; he never drank alcohol or smoked, he woke up at 3am and ran every morning, then worked out faithfully with weights. It was a regimen he adopted as a kid in Toledo, Ohio, and

carried through his entire golf career and into the decades he lived after retiring in 1964 at the age of 42. Recently, Brooks Koepka got mileage on social media after telling reporters he virtually took his entire gym with him from Florida to Hilton Head Island, but that’s less impressive when you consider Stranahan always took his weights with him – and this was in the 1940s and 1950s when the favoured mode of coastto-coast travel was an automobile. In the late 1950s, Stranahan befriended a young golfer from South Africa who also showed an interest in weights and keeping in shape. Stranahan was adamant about the benefits to using weights but insisted he had developed a routine that would not ruin his golf swing. The key, Stranahan told Player, was to not overdevelop the biceps or chest muscles. Player considered Stranahan, who was 13 years older than his South African friend, a mentor and visionary. “In the early part of my career, people thought I was an absolute nut for training with weights,” Player told ESPN, four years ago, when he turned 80. “But I stuck to my workout routine even during tournaments and it paid off big time.” Who could argue? Player is one of five golfers (Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Woods being the others) who has captured at least one victory in each of the four professional majors – the career grand slam, as it is – and he has won more than 160 tournaments around the globe. Nor could anyone suggest Stranahan’s intense fitness regimen thwarted his golf game. While an amateur, Stranahan won four PGA Tour tournaments, but it was the non-professional stuff that truly mattered to him. He won a pair of British Amateurs, two Canadian Amateurs, the Mexico Amateur, and as an amateur he finished second in the Open Championship twice and at the Masters in 1947. When he failed in his 11th and final time to win the US Amateur, in 1954, it was a loss to eventual champ Arnold Palmer in the round of 16 that convinced Stranahan to turn pro. He did and from 1955-64 Stranahan played 188 PGA Tour tournaments as a pro, winning twice more, including a topheavy 1958 Los Angeles Open. Palmer, who considered Stranahan a good friend,

called him “Muscles,” but to everyone else he was the “Toledo Strongman.” Stranahan liked the nickname and surely didn’t mind showing off his attributes. He wore tight polo shirts in competition and often posed shirtless for body-building endorsements. “But he was actually a very kind man, pretty quiet and polite,” said Gaquin. Whereas DeChambeau conceded his fitness regimen was intended to provide more strength to keep ahead of the curve in this era of power-hitting, both Stranahan and Player insisted their motivation was for long, healthy lives. Player said to ESPn: “My fitness and proper diet are the reasons I have been so successful. If I didn’t take care of my body with a strict regimen, as well as eating proper food, I might be dead.” Instead, Player remains vibrant at 84 and while Stranahan didn’t fulfill his prediction for 120, he was 90 when he died in 2013, having been a regular at the gym a few days a week right up to his death. Both mentor and protégé advocated sensible diets. Stranahan gave up eating meat in his early 20s, choosing a diet of whole grain, fresh fruits and vegetables. He often fasted days at a time, drinking only water. Player emphasises tree nuts, fruits, vegetables, olive oil, and he eschews bacon passionately. Different fitness strategies for different fitness freaks because DeChambeau embraces a “two-to-one carb-to-protein ratio” that allows him to pretty much eat what he wants. So, for breakfast “I usually have four eggs, five pieces of bacon, some toast and two protein shakes. ” Likely, we would have lost Player at the “five pieces of bacon,” but therein we come to an intersection on the road to fitness. It probably veers off in five or six directions; just as there are dozens of successful golf swings that don’t look the same, not everyone improves his or her physical fitness in similar fashions. Davis Love III, for instance, said his father, a heralded golf instructor and former PGA Tour player, “literally pulled me out of organised basketball because they were lifting weights.” Then there’s Johnny Miller, who has never thought that a lot of weightlifting was good for golfers. “I think he overdid the weight room, personally,” he commented in 2016 about Rory McIlroy, who had squandered a chance to win the US

Masters with scores of 77 and 71 over the weekend and then missed the cut in the US Open. “I don’t think that helped him at all,’’ Miller added. “I think (the) same thing with Tiger Woods. You just get carried away with wearing the tight shirts and showing off their sort of muscles. You know, golf is a game of finesse and touch. You need a certain amount of strength. I just think you’ve got a little too much of that.” No surprise, given the golf public’s adoration of Woods and McIlroy, that Miller was heavily criticised. But he spoke from experience. After winning his second major, the 1976 Open Championship, Miller chose to return to his home in Utah and spend months chopping wood and lifting logs. He wanted to bulk up and he did; he soon wore a size 18 collar. The thing is, in 1977 he felt like he had lost his feel. He turned 30 that April and should have been in his prime. Instead, in 1977-80 he played 51 times, didn’t win, and had just seven top 10s. Bigger and stronger, yes; but Miller concedes his game suffered. Mind you, his 2016 criticism was consistent with strong thoughts Miller had written in 2003. “I Call The Shots” was written with Golf Digest’s Guy Yocum (it was published in 2004) and in it Miller produced a chapter called “The Trouble With Physical Conditioning.” Players striving for “the big-muscle swing” were putting enormous stress on the back and he said Woods, who had added 30 pounds of muscle, and David Duval, who was similarly ripped, purposely got into lifting weights to help in that quest. Miller wasn’t an advocate. To give him his due, it could be said that Miller was on target. Duval never did return to elite form, and while Woods had great success in 2005-09 and was rejuvenated in 2019 in winning the US Masters at age 43, there were a series of wasted years as his back and overall health suffered. Which is not to suggest DeChambeau is facing similar woes. The fact is, his quest for weight and for muscle and power has already paid dividends and he’s going to ride the bull market. “I have really enjoyed the journey to get to this point,” DeChambeau told reporters. “I am going to continue to work hard and see where it takes me.”

W

e knew all along that we wanted to have a big family. My wife Dowd, is the oldest of five children and I am second youngest of six. We didn’t know exactly how many children we wanted, but we knew we both had great experiences growing up and wanted to create something similar to that in our life together. We have five children now, ages 9, 7, 6, 4 and 18 months. Our life is constant, busy and fun. We feel like we fail every day at what we want to be as parents, but we’re thankful our kids give us grace and they forgive us when we mess up. We are constantly learning. We ask questions to parents who are five, 10 years ahead of us -- what did they do that worked well? And when it comes to teaching our kids or disciplining our kids, I feel like parenting is one of those fluid processes unlike anything else. You learn as you go. You learn from your mistakes. It’s simultaneously the most joyful and challenging thing that I’ve ever done. Some days you feel like you want to have 20 kids and some days you feel like you just want to run into your closet and hide for a little while. But we are having fun. I mean, our kids bring so much joy to us. Dowd and I truly are partners in this journey. Most of the things I’ve implemented as a father have come from her and from watching her be a mum. I think communication is so big when it comes to any marriage—any relationship, really—and especially one like ours where we’re apart so much. You’ve got to know how to talk to each other. Sometimes I play golf more than I want to because of the schedule that time of the year, but Dowd has been great about it. In fact, a few years ago she told me when I’m on the road, I should be fully on the road and trust that she’s got everything taken care of at home. And then when I’m at home, be fully home. So, if I have an off week, I don’t need to be spending two hours a night watching Golf Channel. Be fully with the kids, pres-

ent minded, that kind of thing. Obviously, I miss them when I’m on the road and think about them a lot, but Dowd just said, “Hey, listen, if you’re going to be gone from us, why don’t you make it count? Go work hard and have a great week of golf, then come home and deal with us.” So that really changed my mindset and it’s really helping. When the kids are in school, they don’t travel a lot – maybe six or seven tournaments at the most, sometimes just on the weekend. Sometimes Dowd will fly out by herself, maybe one or two weekends a year, to be with me, but it’s not that often. We’re fortunate living in Charlotte, North Carolina, though. We have our hometown event, the Wells Fargo Championship, and there are a lot of tournaments that are easy drives for Dowd and the kids – the Masters, the Wyndham Championship and the RBC Heritage, which I won earlier this year. All of those events are special to me. In fact, we named our third child Wyndham after I won Greensboro in 2011. That said, I know a time will come when it’s not as easy for the whole family to travel. We’ve got three in school now and our fouryear-old can’t wait to get started. They’ll be doing sports or theatre or whatever and there will be conflicts. Plus, it will be

harder for me to leave knowing that there are important events or activities going on. And leaving home is never easy. I remember when Jack was probably six years old and I told him I was going to be gone for eight days to go play in the Open Championship. He started crying in the driveway and then I started crying. I literally kissed everyone, told them I loved them and told Dowd, with tears in my eyes that I’ve got to go. Then I sat there and cried in the back of the car that was taking me to the airport. As the kids have gotten older, the dynamics change a little. They can tell you they don’t want you to go in a very clear way like Jack did that day. But they also understand my job better and how it takes me away from them. When I’m on the road, we stay in touch on FaceTime. I try not to call during dinner or disrupt the bedtime routine because sometimes the kids get a little hyper after talking to me. Our youngest, Eden, she cries immediately when she hears my voice on the phone. But we talk several times a week and we try to talk individually so I can hear about their day. I don’t know if it helps them, but it definitely helps me. Of course, there are things you miss

when you are on the road. The week I won the US Open in 2012, Jack, who is our first-born, took his first steps. I remember Dowd called me and said, “Hey, I know you’d want to know this. I know it’s going to be hard, but I want to tell you, James took his first steps today.” And it really broke my heart. But once I did it for a while and started travelling, you get used to missing certain things and in a sad kind of way it becomes easier. But I will say during covid-19, I got to be home for four straight months— maybe for the first time since we got married—and seeing Eden develop and grow was one of the highlights of me being a parent. Seeing that constant day-to-day growth and change makes me honestly feel close to her in a special way. At the same time, coming home after several weeks on the road can be an adjustment. There was a time when I was having moments where I might get frustrated where I normally wouldn’t have. Dowd finally said, “I understand that for the last few weeks you have been on your own schedule. You go to Starbucks when you want to go to Starbucks, you go practice when you want to go practice and you go to bed when you want to go to bed. “But you’re home now, and we have all these little people who demand your attention and time.” So, we just came up with a game plan that when I am in route, whether it’s on the aeroplane or in a car driving back home, I pray. I ask God for help to just be patient and lay my desires down for a little while and try to help the family. It’s a conscious effort that I have to make and it’s a joy. Obviously, I want to come back home. But there’s these little nuances and subtleties to that transition when you go from being by yourself for a week to the constant noise and fun and loudness of a big family. And it definitely took time and we had to come up with a game plan of how to make it a better. And I wouldn’t have my life any other way.

Michael Hill’s jewel GOLF NEWS The cover of Michael Hill’s book of cartoons

By Neville Idour

T

his is a first for me — a book review — and it isn’t a golf book in the true sense, although golf is part of it. But I found it so humorous, absorbing and uplifting I thought why not? Sir Michael Hill, jeweller, golfer, violinist and philanthropist, is also an accomplished and clever cartoonist with

a unique style. He started “doodling”, as he calls it, when he was 19 years old. So on and off over a 60 year period he has amassed over 1000 cartoons. So what does one do with 1000 cartoons? Enter daughter-in-law Monika Hill who proceeded to assemble them into a cohesive group which became a massive and time-consuming task. She said: “Many, of course, were funny on their own but it was actually a lot of fun to do.” The result was Catch & Release, a 412-page quality book that has proven popular in the short time it has been available. Interestingly Central Otago readers of the local Scene newspaper have been able to enjoy a weekly new offering from Hill as resident cartoonist. In Hill’s words: “It has quirky quotes and plenty of nonsense to go with some of the cartoons.” In fact it has much more than that. There are many wise and humorous homilies and quotes throughout the book, often by well known people

past and present and also Hill himself. Many of Hill’s comments and images give an insight into his early years, his family life, aspirations and success in business. The beauty of the book is you can enjoy it in several doses or, as I found, I didn’t want to leave it too long between each session. Some of his quotes are so true. “I always employ people that I know will be better than me and cover my weaknesses. They actually lift me up with them.” “Treat everyone you meet as an equal. Never be judgemental, disrespectful or intolerant. This way, you give even the roughest diamond the chance to surprise you.” And from former All Black Kees Meeuws: “Do not worry about reputation. Concern yourself with character. Reputation is what people think of you, character is what you are.” Hill’s humility and modesty is evident throughout this remarkable publication. It is a nicely presented and high quality book that will delight its owners

and any visitors for years as it sits in easy reach on a coffee table. I highly recommend it. At around $40 it is a steal. CATCH & RELEASE – a life of art, thoughts and nonsense. It is available from Paper Plus and The Hills Clubhouse in Arrowtown.

Ryder Cup and Presidents’ Cup put back by a year T he Ryder Cup and the Presidents’ Cup have both been postponed by a year. The 43rd Ryder Cup, scheduled for the week of September 22-27 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, has been rescheduled to the following year in the week of September 21-26. Likewise, the 2021 Presidents’ Cup, initially scheduled for September 30-October 3 in 2021 at Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina, will now be played September 19-25 in 2022. The decision to reschedule the Ryder Cup was made based on guidance from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and in conjunction with the state of Wisconsin and Sheboygan County, with the health and well-being of all involved as the top priority. Seth Waugh, chief executive of the PGA of America, said: “Unlike other major sporting events that are played in existing stadiums, we had to make a decision now

about building facilities to host the 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits. “It became clear that as of today, our medical experts and the public authorities in Wisconsin could not give us certainty that conducting an event responsibly with thousands of spectators in September would be possible. Given that uncertainty, we knew rescheduling was the right call. “We are grateful to (PGA Tour) commissioner Jay Monahan and our partners at the PGA Tour for their flexibility and generosity in the complex task of shifting the global golf calendar. “As disappointing as this is, our mandate to do all we can to safeguard public health is what matters most. The spectators who support both the US and European sides are what make the Ryder Cup such a unique and compelling event and playing without them was not a

realistic option.” Guy Kinnings, Europe’s Ryder Cup director, said: “The Ryder Cup is rightly celebrated as one of the world’s greatest sporting occasions, made special and totally unique in our sport by the fervent atmosphere created by the passionate spectators of both sides. “While that point is significant, it is not as important as the health of the spectators which, in these difficult times, is always the main consideration. We considered all options including playing with a limited attendance but all our stakeholders agreed this would dilute the magic of this great occasion. “We therefore stand beside our partners at the PGA of America in the decision to postpone the Ryder Cup for a year and join with them in extending our thanks to the PGA Tour for their willingness to help by moving the date of the Presidents’ Cup.”

PGA Tour-China called off for this year T

his season’s China arm of the PGA Tour has been cancelled. Access into China and the continued global spread of coronavirus made it impossible to proceed with tournaments on the PGA Tour Series China at this time. In January, the series held the first of three planned qualifying tournaments for players from mainland China. The series also scheduled two additional global qualifying tournaments open to players from the rest of the world. But once the coronavirus pandemic spread throughout Asia, it ended the ability for the series to hold those events as planned. Attempts to move the qualifying tour-

T

naments to other south-east Asia sites were not practical, and with access into China limited, officials came to the decision that it couldn’t contest tournaments this year. “It’s a disappointment, but I know our players and fans understand, given the continuing evolution of the covid-19 pandemic, that the health and safety of everyone associated with the Series is of the utmost importance, and staging a Tour based in China with players from five different continents is just not feasible at this time,” said Greg Carlson, PGA Tour Series-China executive director. “We have enjoyed five great years in

China, and this was shaping up to be the most successful season in our history. We will continue to evaluate what is happening with the coronavirus and hope the situation alleviates itself so we can again resume tournament golf in this part of the world in 2021.” Earlier this year, the Mackenzie Tour– PGA Tour Canada cancelled its season due to restrictions at the Canada-US border and mandatory quarantines for those entering Canada because of covid-19. “Like with the Mackenzie Tour, there was so much growing uncertainty in China with getting into the country and all the things associated with travelling

there,” Carlson added. “We looked at many different options and scheduling models that might have allowed us to even play an abbreviated schedule, and it turned out to not be feasible.” PGA Tour Series-China made its debut in 2014 and has seen members move on to both the Korn Ferry Tour and the PGA Tour while also competing in international competitions such as the Presidents’ Cup and the Olympics. Players who earned membership following the 2019 season via a top-50 finish on the order of merit will maintain their PGA Tour Series-China status in 2021.

Asia-Pacific tournaments cancelled

his year’s Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific (WAAP) and Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship (AAC) have been cancelled due to the coronavirus situation. The Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific was scheduled for October 7-10 at Siam Country Club in Pattaya, Thailand. The championship will now be played at Siam Country Club from February 4-7 of next year. The Asia-Pacific Amateur was set to take place from October 29-November 1 at The Royal Melbourne Golf

Club in Australia. Future championship plans will be announced at a later date. Taimur Amin, chairman of the Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation, said: “Our highest priority is the health and safety of our players, officials and everyone throughout the world involved in running these great championships. “Given the on-going concerns and global impacts of this pandemic, we determined with our respective partners that these events unfortunately could not proceed as planned this year.

“My sympathies are with all the players who were looking forward to participating. They can rest assured that, together with our partners, we will continue to provide these life-changing opportunities when it is safe to do so. “We are grateful to everyone involved in the staging of both championships for their understanding and shared dedication to our mission, and we look forward to continuing our work together to advance the game throughout the Asia-Pacific.”

Three men, two aces in the one round By Laury Livsey/PGA Tour

GOLF NEWS

rian Harman hit his seven iron on the third hole of the final round at the 2015 Barclays, a tournament now known as The Northern Trust, and he watched as the ball rolled on the green, eventually dropping in the hole. More than a bit excited, he turned to his caddie and said, “That’s my first one out here.” It most certainly was. Harman, the lefthander and celebrated amateur from the University of Georgia who joined the PGA Tour in 2012, had never made a hole in one in competition, let alone one in a PGA Tour event. After such a long wait, what did Harman do? He merely waited 90 minutes to replicate the feat. Eleven holes later, on the 220-yard No 14 at Plainfield Country Club in New Jersey, Harman pulled a four iron from his bag, made his swing and again watched as the ball settled in the bottom of the cup. It’s a rarity you get to write two ones on the scorecard. “That’s awesome” is all playing partner Charles Howell III could say after Harman made his second hole in one. Yes, it was awesome, with unlikely, crazy and hard to fathom additional descriptions Howell could have also used. Yet, it was not the first time in PGA Tour history a player has made two holes in one in the same round. Two others know the feeling. Harman joined the select group that included a career amateur from Connecticut and a Japanese golfer who played only one full PGA Tour season before returning to his homeland. Of all the players and tournaments and par threes played in PGA Tour history, only three know what it’s like to make a couple of aces in a round while thousands who have played PGA Tour golf have no idea. The first to pull off the double-ace feat was amateur Bill Whedon, at the 1955 Insurance City Open in Hartford, Conneticut, a tournament still on the tour schedule known as the Travelers Championship. about 30 minutes apart, on the fifth hole and the ninth hole at Wethersfield Country Club. It was a long wait until Japan’s Yusaku Miyazato, in only his eighth PGA Tour start and his only tour appearance of 2006, replicated the drama, making two aces in the second round of the Reno-Tahoe Open. His came on the seventh and 12th holes at Montreux Golf and Country Club. Then it became Harman’s turn. Those flurry of aces didn’t translate to any appreciable tournament success by any of the players. Harman tied for 30th, Miyazato tied for 21st and Whedon was 71st, none of the three ever in contention. Today, Whedon, 92, is long since retired and living in Con-

played a PGA Tour event since the 2018 PGA Championship, After his one spectacular day, Whedon never made another hole in one, while neither Harman or Miyazato have had holes in one since their respective rounds in New Jersey and Nevada. Earlier in his career, however, Miyazato had an ace on the Japan Golf Tour in 2005 and an albatross in 2004. Two in the same round again, though? It doesn’t seem likely, although Harman thinks about making an ace every time he steps to the tee on a par three. “Obviously, I’m trying to make a lot of holes in one. Hopefully I’ll have a lot more, but definitely I’ll remember the ones I have.”

necticut, not far from the site of his most famous golf accomplishment. Meanwhile, Harman continues to play on. He had already won once prior to his hole in one heroics, at the 2014 John Deere Classic. He added a second tour title, the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship in North Carolina. This season, he’s 57th in the FedExCup standings. In Japan, Miyazato has carved out an excellent career, with most of his success coming in the last seven years. Beginning with his first Japan Golf Tour victory, the 2013 Golf Nippon Series JT Cup, the Okinawa native has won seven JGTO titles, including the prestigious Dunlop Phoenix (2015) and the Japan PGA Championship (2017). Faldo Series continues to receive full support from R&A

T

he R&A is to continue its full support of the Faldo Series, the most recognised junior golf event in the world founded by six-time major champion Sir Nick Faldo. The R&A has provided funding to the Faldo Series since its inception in 1996 and it was the first named player initiative to be supported by the governing body. Proceeds generated by The Open are used by The R&A to invest in the growth and development of golf around the world. This support will continue to play a particularly crucial role in facilitating tournaments in new golfing regions, as well as furthering the development of junior golf by inviting world class coaches to lead clinics at Faldo Series’ events. Over 40,000 participants, aged between 12 and 21, have competed since the Faldo Series began. Notable graduates from the Faldo Series include 2014 Open champion Rory McIlroy and 2016 US Masters champion Danny Willett as well as fellow tour professionals Tseng Yani, Nasa Hataoka, Megan Khang, Carly Booth, Joaquín Niemann, Eddie Pepperell and Rashid Khan. The Faldo Series is recognised as the only global amateur series for boys and girls, giving competitors the opportunity to play in world amateur golf ranking-counting events, while testing themselves against the best juniors around the world.

Established in the United Kingdom, the series has gone from strength to strength in recent years, expanding to encompass Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, North America and South America. Dedicated to developing tomorrow’s champions, the series now features approximately 40 tournaments annually, visiting 30 countries. R&A golf development director Kevin Barker said: “As a supporter of the Faldo Series for many years, we have seen first-hand the impact it has made on the

game by providing competitive opportunities for boys and girls around the world and helping their development. “The series is expanding further into new and existing territories, including less-developed golf nations, providing more opportunities for participation in golf by young people.” Sir Nick has welcomed the continued support by The R&A. He said: “We are incredibly fortunate and grateful to have the support of The R&A to further develop the game of golf around the world.

“The Faldo Series has always looked to develop tomorrow’s champions and increase competitive opportunities to help the next generation of golfers improve, which is also key goal of The R&A.” Due to the Covid-19 situation, the Faldo Series saw many events postponed across both Europe and Asia. However, the European schedule recently resumed and is seeing record-breaking entry numbers, showing the appetite from junior golfers to get back to competitive golf after lockdown.

USGA expands its golf photography collection T

he United States Golf Association (USGA) has expanded its extensive golf photography holdings with the acquisition of the Howard Schickler photography collection, the world’s most significant private collection of original early golf photography. The USGA is a primary steward for preserving and celebrating the history of the game and its latest acquisition is a collection which contains more than 1000 high-quality, historically and artistically important golf images from the 19th and early 20th century. Many photographs feature top American and British golfers, both men and women, from the mid-1800s to the 1970s. The collection was amassed over decades by collector Howard Schickler, sourced from the collections of some of the game’s most influential figures, including the personal collections of old Tom Morris and FG Tait, the Auchterlonie and the Foulis families, the estate of Billy Burke and the collections of Ed Dudley and Bernard Darwin. Schickler’s love of golf began when he started playing the game at age 13 in New York City. As a long-time curator and dealer of fine art photography, Schickler brings a unique perspective to this collection.

USGA

Schickler said: “I have been mostly interested in the human story in all the collections I have personally built. “The collection in many ways tells the story, and to the extent important photographs are dispersed in the marketplace, a cohesive story may be permanently lost. “I tried to bring stability and credibility to the collecting part by assisting other collectors, historians and auctions … and it made the collection that I was building that much more worthy to stand the test of time.” Although the USGA Golf Museum was already home to the largest collection of golf artifacts, library items, photographs and footage in the world, the images in the Schickler collection augment the museum’s holdings related to early women’s golf, early American golf and major championship winners. Specific highlights from the Schickler collection include: * More than 800 images of USGA champions, including 148 images of early female champions. * 49 large-format photos taken by famed golf photographer George Pietzcker. * A set of four rare gelatin prints of Lucy Barnes Brown, the first female USGA champion, and her competitors at the 1895 US Women’s Amateur. * 31 photographs of old and young Tom Morris from the mid-to-late 1800s. * 75 photographs documenting the 1911 US Amateur at the Apawamis Club, the most comprehensive collection of images of this championship. A selection of the photos from the collection have been digitised and can be seen on www.usga.org “It is vital that we continue to catalogue golf’s greatest people, places and moments so that all those who love the game can draw inspiration from them,” said Hilary Cronheim, director of the USGA museum. “The acquisition of Mr Schickler’s photography collection ensures that this rich historical resource will be preserved for future generations to enjoy.” The photographs add to the USGA Golf Museum’s collection of more than 750,000 prints, slides, negatives and digital images. The USGA’s digital photo archive contains nearly 375,000 images, in-

cluding digitised files of original back and white images from the beginnings of golf and photography in the United States, as well as an extensive collection of contemporary images. Each year, more than 15,000 images are added to the collection from the USGA’s championships and other assignments, as well as through museum donations and purchases. These images are

used to share the game’s rich story with audiences around the world. The USGA Golf Museum is located on the campus of the USGA’s headquarters in Liberty Corner, New Jersey. The commitment to the preservation and celebration of golf history is part of the association’s mission to champion and advance the game and is funded in large part by revenue generated from the US Open.

Golf beneficial for the young, study shows A project carried out between one of the world’s greatest golf clubs and one of Scotland’s leading universities has found that golf can have a positive impact on children’s behaviour and well-being. Carnoustie Golf Links and Abertay University ran a programme, titled golf collaboration project, which set out to test the effects of golf on young people via a Carnoustie Golf Links programme for young golfers. Over a six-week period, children who took part were assessed on their golf skills,

physical activity and personal well-being. According to a report in The Golf Business, testing included physical measurements such as jump performance, back and grip strength, reaction time and balance, as well as personal testing on how the young golfers judged their own sense of belonging, self-esteem, self-confidence, resilience and other factors. Across the testing programme, participants reported an increase in well-being across all categories, while three out of four physical tests also showed improved

results. Dr Graeme Sorbie said: “These findings demonstrate the positive impact that participation in the Carnoustie programme, and golf in general, can have on children. The testing highlighted that children are not only enjoying playing golf but are improving their personal well-being and physical skills at the same time.” Carnoustie Golf Links’ PGA head professional Keir McNicoll added: “Golf can and should be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of age. Golf for all encapsulates

our core value of inclusivity and we are extremely fortunate to have such a fantastic suite of facilities here at Links House which allows young people to get off to a fantastic start enjoying the great game. “Our Carnoustie programme continues to grow each year and it is great to have this level of validation, through the great work that Abertay have done, that the effort and energy we are putting into the programme is benefitting young children beyond just learning the game.”

Scorecards making way for digital scoring

C

oronavirus has encouraged the desire of clubs to move from using physical scorecards to digital scoring, says a golf computer software manager. Craig Higgs, who is the managing director of Golf Genius Software, said with golf clubs continuing to adopt new safety protocols to reduce contact points in a bid to combat coronavirus, employing technology to keep track of your score was an obvious and easy-to-implement measure. “There is definitely a very strong market force that is pushing the printed scorecard to one side,” Higgs said. “The desire and movement towards using the phone to score is super-charged. “There’s no doubt that the market is being forced to move that way. We only see that movement as getting

faster and we are significantly developing our application product to take advantage of that opportunity.” Higgs said contactless golf is the new normal with digital scoring among the elements being embraced by clubs and golfers around the planet. “As people come back from the lockdown period, we know how important it is to keep golf safe,” Higgs added. “Typically, what we’re seeing across the 50 countries that we deal with is that golf is now generally moving to a state of being open – and clubs want to make sure it’s done in a socially responsible and contactless way. “Across our country markets, we’re being asked to rapidly help clubs with their digitisation. They’re looking to reduce the traditional touch points in a golf event and

Golf membership numbers up across the country By Dean Murphy New Zealand Golf Chief Executive

G

olf in New Zealand continues to thrive despite the recent covid-19 pandemic, with statistics showing an increase in membership throughout the country from this time last year. New Zealand Golf has seen a 4.8 percent increase in golf club memberships across the country since the end of July 2019, with a recent spike from April as the country came out of isolation. Last month also saw a significant increase in rounds played (up 29 percent) compared with July of last year. This positive momentum on the back of the covid-19 lockdown period is very pleasing and builds on the positive 2019 year end numbers where club membership were up 2.45 percent and rounds

Dave Mangan is the general manager of championship and golf operations for New Zealand Golf. Since 2013, Dave has been New Zealand Golf’s representative on the R&A rules of golf committee and was involved in the five years of discussions on the 2019 rule changes. Readers are invited to submit questions to Golfer Pacific editor Paul Gueorgieff by email to pgueorgieff@yahoo. co.nz. Please ensure you explain your questions and situations clearly.

CAN YOU MOVE LOOSE IMPEDIMENTS IN A PENALTY AREA? Dave, My ball finished in a penalty area. I am sure you are now allowed to ground the club in a penalty area but

played were up six percent. As a current industry snapshot, we currently have over 106,000 club members, more than 123,000 registered casual players and just under four million rounds being played each year. While life around the golf sector has largely returned to normal, the covid-19 pandemic remains firmly in our thoughts. So far, our organisation has undertaken a significant amount of advocacy work related to the impacts on the golf sector from the covid-19 pandemic. Initially this was focused on securing the ability for essential golf course maintenance to be undertaken at alert level four, followed by a second wave of advocacy work to securing the ability for some sort of golf to be played at alert level three. While we are now at alert level one and

am I also allowed to remove loose impediments such as sticks and leaves? Roger, Akaroa Hi Roger, Yes you can, this was a change with the new rules. When you are in a penalty area you may remove loose impediments, ground your club and take practice swings, without penalty, just as you can in the rough and on a fairway.

NO CHOICE TO WHICH SIDE OF PENALTY AREA TO PLAY FROM Dave, My playing partner hit her ball into a creek which was marked with red pegs on both sides of the creek. Was she allowed to play her next shot from either side of the creek, which you used to be able to do, or must it now be played from the side the ball last crossed the penalty line? Margaret, Taupo Hi Margaret, That relief option when a penalty area

back to relative normality across the sector, there are real impacts still to be felt for golf clubs. The ongoing border closure and the uncertain future economic outlook are matters that have potential to severely impact golf clubs throughout the country and therefore they are matters we are watching closely. For our own business, the impacts of covid-19 have been reasonably significant. Our tournament and player development operations have been majorly impacted and, like most businesses, we have suffered a massive revenue reduction. We have been fortunate that some of our planned expenditure for 2020 has not been incurred due to events being cancelled and we have received generous grants to help offset our revenue challenges. While we have weathered the

is marked red, which was to drop on the other side of the water hazard (as they were called then) has been removed from the rules of golf. What has replaced this however, is the ability for committees and clubs to allow this under a local rule. So to answer your question she would only be able to drop on the other side only if the committee or club had the local rule in operation.

NO REQUIREMENT TO MARK BALL UNDER LIFT, CLEAN AND PLACE Dave, I think I have seen this reported before but under lift, clean and place is it no longer required to mark your ball before lifting it? If this is the case I find this rule unbelievable. Alexander, Wanaka Hi Alexander, That is correct, when preferred lies are in operation the requirement to mark your ball is no longer required.

immediate impact, the biggest impacts for our business will likely come in 2021 so we are preparing for that now. As part of this work, we have recently undertaken a staffing restructure to not only better align our organisation roles and functions with our 2020-2025 strategic plan, but to respond to the changing needs of our principal stakeholders (golf clubs and district associations) following the covid-19 pandemic shut down period. We do acknowledge all people in the golf sector continue to have much to consider. Our message therefore remains one of support. First and foremost, the team at New Zealand Golf are here to help. These are challenging and unprecedented times so please reach out if you need any help or assistance. We are here to help wherever we can.

CANNOT IMPROVE CONDITIONS PRIOR TO SHOT Dave, I was watching Bryson DeChambeau on the PGA Tour when he scored his 10. I am sure when he took one of his drops he beforehand brushed the grass with his fairway wood to ensure the grain of the grass would be in the direction he would be hitting. He then dropped the ball in the area where he brushed the grass. As far as I am concerned he was improving his lie before he took his drop. Is this allowed? Andrew, Napier Hi Andrew, A player is not allowed to improve any of the conditions affecting their stroke. This includes an area that they may be intending to drop their ball in. In this instance DeChambeau’s actions would have been deemed by the committee as something that would not have improved any of the conditions affecting his stroke.

GOLFCOMMENT A backward step for Ko might be the step in the right direction By Neville Idour

T

he recent news that Lydia Ko had sacked her fifth coach in four years was hardly what we wanted to hear, initially as none of the changes seem to have had the desired effect. In fact her ranking since those heady days with firstly Guy Wilson then David Leadbetter as world number one has continued to drop and she was at No 52 at time of writing. Since the dramatic sacking of Leadbetter and her successful caddy along with a complete change of equipment it has all been downhill. It is almost impossible to remember any player who maintained their form immediately after major changes. Not even Tiger Woods or Rory McIlroy could do so. However, when Sean Foley revealed his plans for Ko at the end of last month, the ears pricked up. Just, maybe, this will be a step in the right direction. I hope so as it appears to be a sensible move for Ko to agree to. More on that later. As I have said previously, whatever happens no one can forget or take away

what Ko achieved during her golden run as arguably the most successful professional golfer New Zealand has produced. Of course she is not the first player to make changes when at the top and lose what produced the success. Remember Australian Ian Baker-Finch who, after major championship success, sought the Holy Grail and ended up totally losing his swing and giving the game away only to become one of the game’s leading commentators. How about the classic bad move by Irishman Padraig Harrington who, after winning three major championships in two years, decided he had to improve and drive the ball further. He virtually disappeared from leaderboards overnight and even though he continues to compete on the European and PGA tours, when he can get a start he is rarely sighted. His current world ranking is 391. Luke Donald is another former world number one to plummet after making changes that did not pay off. He is now 384. What about our own Craig Perks? After outduelling Tiger Woods down the final stretch to win the Players’ Championship, he sought improvement and quickly lost his game to the point where he had no idea where his tee shots would

go. Like Baker-Finch he gave it away and is now a PGA Tour commentator. Michael Campbell even admitted recently changes he tried to make after his United States Open win contributed to his loss of form. It is great to see him showing glimpses of former glory on the European Tour. Of course we could go on with so many examples of form lost inexplicably. Then there are those like Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Tom Watson, Gary Player and Bob Charles who maintained and knew what worked best for them, thus they achieved longevity of performance. Back to Ko and Sean Foley. Foley, of course, has worked with many of the top players such as Woods and Justin Rose. In an interview with Tony Richens of New Zealand Golf Magazine, Foley said he wanted to go back to the past with Lydia and help her be “the Lydia we knew again.” Foley said he wanted to rediscover what made Ko, who was the world’s top amateur and then top professional. “We have continued to go down memory lane to find those answers,’’ Foley said. “Players should never get too far away from their DNA as what was learned during the early years is cemented in the brain and memory.” So it seems that the mind needs to

be cleared of the multitude of technical thoughts that appear to have dominated her swing in the last two years. Ko’s hallmark was always her feel, which produced a natural smooth swing and therefore enabled her to play with unerring control of length and direction. The drive to hit longer tee shots did not succeed and in fact at times saw her lose some length. I would expect the attempt to restore what was lost will allow her to play with that infectious enjoyment again. Interestingly, Foley had close connections with Leadbetter in times gone by. Let us hope for the best, but whatever happens the memories of Lydia at her best will never fade. * This story was penned just before the resumption of the LPGA Tour at the Drive On Championship. Ko had two excellent rounds, but was derailed by a disastrous second round of 80 in difficult conditions. A par round would have been good enough for third. Her first round of three under par was much like her old self with her swing looking freer and without the technical-looking movements she had developed. She led for the first nine holes. Four birdies in the final round also showed good signs. While 28th was not Earth shattering there were enough indicators for a positive outlook.

NZ PGA moves office to Albany in Auckland By Dominic Sainsbury New Zealand PGA General Manager

T

he Professional Golfers’ Association of New Zealand is now based at the North Shore Golf Club in Auckland. The move was made at the beginning of this month and is largely due to the PGA’s growth and need for increased office space. The PGA had previously been at the Remuera Golf Club, which had been the organisation’s home since 2018. The PGA of NZ is the largest vocational golf members’ association in the country. It is dedicated to promoting the game and enhancing the standards of the profession, with more than 400 members working as club professionals, club managers, coaches, working in golf operations, event management, retail and in club fitting. It provides support to PGA members who are leading the game forward in New Zealand with education and resources at the core of the PGA. I am PGA general manager and excited about the relocation to Albany.

Over the past five years the PGA has grown as an organisation with increases to our membership, the PGA operational team and the support we provide to the industry. As result of the growth we have had to find more office space to operate from and after options at our previous office at Remuera Golf Club were exhausted we sought interest from other clubs. Remuera has been a fantastic place to call home and we will miss our daily interaction with the club’s staff and players. We are looking forward to forging new relationships at North Shore, which we see as a progressive club with a strong community focus. Moreover, the PGA has a high regard for the club’s team and facilities. We have already hosted a number of PGA workshops at North Shore Golf Club over the years, the most recent being the Brad Kennedy project one-putt workshop in March. My buoyant mood is echoed by North Shore Golf Club’s general manager Rowland Griffiths.

“The board and management are proud to welcome the PGA of NZ to their new home,’’ Griffiths said. “Our club is constantly looking at ways to diversify and grow. We also have a strong commitment to nurturing the next generation of players, which is a goal shared by the PGA of NZ.” As well as boosting the overall profile of the North Shore club, the PGA’s move brings tangible benefits for the club’s staff and members. It will be easy for them to attend PGA events, such as seminars and workshops, and the introduction of a PGA training facility will provide top level equipment for teaching, club repair and club fitting. Griffiths added: “Our own events will be enhanced with direct access to PGA staff and being able to tap into their knowledge and experience should help us further improve our day-to-day operations.” For the past 10 years, the PGA of NZ has worked closely with New Zealand Golf on a number of successful tournaments and initiatives. To help this rewarding relationship continue, a hot desk is available for

any NZ Golf staff member who wishes to work from the new PGA office in Albany. North Shore Golf Club was established in 1931. The picturesque 90-hectare course has 27 holes, giving golfers three different playing options.

How to hit a fairway wood By Ian Hardie NZPGA Professional

I

see a lot of golfers who, due to the advances in golf club technology over the past couple of decades, are able to hit really good drives from the tee. The golf shots they hit with their driver seem to fly high, long and remarkably straight. Maybe it’s the modern golf clubs or possibly it’s because the golf ball is always teed up and simple enough to hit cleanly. It could be due to them spending hours hitting drive after drive off the nice high tees at their local driving range or in the many golf simulators that seem to be popping up around the place these days. In fact, most golfers these days hit their drivers so well, you would almost think that they were all scratch golfers … until they go to hit a fairway wood shot. Then all of a sudden, their true ability at the game shows up and the results for most golfers, when hitting shots with their fairway woods, are generally poor at best.

Those poor fairway wood results are costing a lot of golfers plenty of shots during their rounds, through the lack of opportunity to attack on par 5 holes or the ability to get close enough to make a par on longer par 4 holes. Something that a well-struck fairway wood allows you to do, as you play your second shot deep on a par 5, giving you the ability to attack with your third or getting close enough to make a pitch and putt par on those long 4s. Unfortunately, most golfers aren’t able to attack like that, as they are busy trying to save the hole after a poor fairway wood shot that’s been topped along the ground, headed off into the trees, the rough, a water hazard or a sand trap. So why such a difference? I think to understand why most golfers struggle to hit fairway woods, we need to look at why they can hit their drivers relatively well first. When using a modern driver most players have the ball teed up quite high, and the practice tees they use at driving ranges are the same height, which aids in

Maraenui Golf Club The Friendly Club

Situated within a 5 minute drive of Napier CBD and just an iron shot to the ocean. Maraenui Golf Club is a flat easy walking course with tree lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers. Green fee players welcome. maraenui@golf.co.nz | www.maraenuigolf.co.nz | +64 6 835 8273

consistency. There is of course, the tendency for golfers to hit more drivers than any of their other clubs if they do practise. The faces of most modern drivers are pretty deep, which gives a lot of room for error and mishits, while still providing a remarkably good shot. Their golf ball will usually be positioned at the front of their stance to promote hitting it on their upswing. There’s not much that can go wrong – is there? The golf ball is teed up nice, nothing in the way of the club head before it hits the ball, plenty of room to hit it hard on the upswing and a big club head designed to produce a good shot, however you hit it. However, when hitting a fairway wood (on the fairway) the tables are turned a bit, as for a start there’s no tee holding it up off the ground. Fairway woods generally have a smaller head and face, so the margin for error is significantly smaller than that of a driver. The ground conditions/grass on the fairway can affect the shot quality greatly depending on where you are hitting from, whether you catch it cleanly, and the weather on the day. Most golfers simply don’t practice that often with their fairway woods and if they do, it’s almost always from a nice lie or a consistent driving range mat. Basically, the margin for error is much smaller for a fairway wood shot as the ball is on the ground and you don’t have anywhere near as much help from the club head as you do with a modern driver. Also, for some reason, most golfers are under the impression that a fairway

wood shot is more of a sweeping shot like a driver but if you watch what the world’s best golfers do to hit their fairway woods well, it’s exactly the opposite. So how do you hit fairway woods well? The main thing to be aware of is that you need to adjust the ball position – so that it is back in your stance, an inch or two from where you hit your driver to allow you to make a descending blow on the ball (as opposed to ascending with a driver). Suddenly realised why you top your fairway wood shots after reading that? Read it again just to make sure you have it. Put the ball back in your stance a little and make a descending blow on the golf ball, just the same as you would hitting a long iron (if you still have any in your golf bag). The other thing you may find helpful is that when using a fairway wood from a teeing ground instead of a driver – hit the golf ball off the ground the same as you would do on the fairway. Yes, I am suggesting not to tee it up! Personally, I hit all fairway woods off the ground whether I am on the tee or not, which has allowed me to develop a single action for fairway wood shots, regardless of where I am playing it from. I make no adjustment from tee shot to fairway shots at all and as a result, have no problem with playing fairway wood shots anywhere on the golf course. Try doing the same for a little while and you’ll be amazed at how much better your fairway wood shots become. Play well.

WHANGAROA GOLF CLUB NEWS Harcourts Par 3 Tournament The Par 3 Tournament finally took place on 27th June 2020 after being postponed due to the weather and played out in fine weather with just a short sharp shower or two.

Best nett went to Ian Hills and Glenys Grace.

The solid team of Rob Jerome and John Toheriri came through the final round of Top Dog as winners against Shane Dormer and Colin Baldwin who were beaten on the 15th hole. Kaigoroa Vets Day A total of 40 Kaitaia and Whangaroa Vets came together to play their bi-annual contest on Monday 29th June 2020. Although the weather looked a bit doubtful at first, most players managed a whole round in the dry, and a grand day was had by all, Whangaroa just managed to squeeze an average 27.7 stablefords compared to Kaitaia’s 25.6 winning back the trophy. The vets will pay a return visit to Ahipara in October this year. White Swan Rosebowl The White Swan Rosebowl, 27 holes Canadian Foursomes, managed to dodge the weather this week and was played in dry but dull weather.

In quarterfinal play, last year’s Senior Division runner-up Wayne McMillan was upset 4/3 by the big-hitting Ofa Vakameilalo. In the Intermediate section it was the turn of Ray Foran to upset last year’s Champion Graeme Tait 2/1. A few first round byes and a couple of walkovers have set the scene for some classic matchplay during August, all in preparation for the club’s selection of a Waikato GA Prebble Cup Pennants team. It will be the club’s first pennant entry in over a decade with play commencing Sunday 30th August 2020.

COVIC SHIELD ROUND 3 RESULTS FROM HAURAKI GC

OMAHA GOLF CLUB SENIOR MATCHPLAY FINAL

The Men’s Senior Match Play final was played last month between Gordon Wyl-

“Picturesque & Tranquil One of the finest 9 hole golf courses in the South Island”

A cloudy and cold day with a few showers, made for some challenging golf. The Hauraki Golf Course layout is a horizontal hillside one that runs along upper, middle and lower sections of the course. The vertical rise from the par 5 fifth hole adjacent to SH2, is gentle but progressive all the way to a ridge top view from the top of the extraordinary par four 13th and 14th holes. The panoramic views look out across the Hauraki Plains toward the hills of the Coromandel Peninsula. Home Course advantage is to be expected with COVIC, but over the year it averages itself out. The resulting Shield aggregate scores and placings were: 1st Hauraki 143; 2nd Huntly Waiterimu 133; 3rd Clarks Beach 126; 4th Awhitu 123; 5th Onewhero 121; 6th Maramarua 116; 7th Waiuku 110; 8th Wattle Downs 107; 9th Pukekohe 106; 10th COVIC Extras 104. This means that Hauraki have leapfrogged Awhitu into 1st place on the table with 9 points. 2nd Awhitu (10); 3rd Huntly-Waiterimu (11); 4th Onewhero (13); 5th Clarks Beach (15). Clarks Beach’s third place on the day saw them move from 8th place up into the top five. Maramarua are now 6th (16); Waiuku 7th (17); Wattle

Downs 8th (19); Pukekohe 9th (25) and COVIC Extra 10th (26). The Claret Jacket Winner for Player of the Day was Hauraki’s Neil Hayward for scoring a stunning 41 points which helped to lift his team score average to an impressive 36 points. The Cup net medal matchplay saw a some-what extraordinary outcome, whereby Awhitu retained the Cup by way of tied team scores at 36 apiece. The format is Net Medal which means there is 1-point per hole being played for in each of the four games and all the games go to the eighteenth hole. The hole winner takes the point or the opponents halve the hole for a half point each, At the end the four player team scores are aggregated and compared. The Cup must be won to change hands. While Hauraki claimed that they would have won under the alternative win or loss of hole matchplay format, Awhitu had the last laugh as they kept on playing to recover any deficit over those closing holes. They proved once and for all, that golf is played as an eighteen hole game. Awhitu will now defend the Cup against the next event hosts Wattle Downs on the 30th July, Theis ‘Battle of the Peninsula Clubs’ from opposite sides of the Manukau Harbour, will be special, given that they are both 9-hole course exponents. Clubs are asked to bring seven players, so please also select a non travelling eight reserve player to be available on the morning of the event as a replacement for any late withdrawal. That way the COVIC extras team might get a full complement of six players. Perhaps the host club might also put a couple of extra players on standby. If in doubt contact your own club convenor, or the COVIC Convenor Tim Howard on 021 155 4113.

Photo: Hauraki had a rainbow of a day, with a Shield round win and an unlucky draw in the Cup.

The final of the 2020 Women’s Weekday Pennants was held at Te Awamutu Golf Club on Monday 20th July. The five best teams from both North/West zone and South/East zone came together to compete for the 2020 Weekday Pennants title. The Kawhia team entered the club house feeling confident of a victory after posting an impressive team score of 302 one shot better than the also impressive Ngahinepouri team. However, once the team from Tahuna had entered their scores there was no doubt as to who the winners would be. The Tahuna team shooting an incredible score of 292 to be 10 shots clear and to claim the 2020 Weekday Pennants title. It has been a very successful year for the ladies at Tahuna who have now won both the Women’s Weekday and Weekend pennants competitions.

Ex Waikato representative player Tyler Wood needed two playoff holes to secure victory in the 2020 Waikato Winter Strokeplay. After four rounds at the Riverside Golf Club, Tyler Wood (Palmerston North) and Samuel Jones (Manaia) could not be separated both sitting on 11 under par. In the first playoff hole they continued in the same fashion by both parring the 18th. They were then sent down the 1st where Sam gave Tyler an opportunity to win it after he bogeyed the hole. Tyler took full advantage of this and drained his par putt to be crowned as the 2020 champion. The women’s division was more straight forward with Danika Lee (Takapuna) beating Eunseo Choi (Takapuna) by two shots with a score of 283.

She was four shots clear of second place Amy Im with a score of 142. In the nett competition Jackie Jang took out first place over second place Georgia Kaye by four shots with a score of 142. The Under 16 boy’s division was a closely fought contest. After the first round four players were all tied for first place after shooting rounds of 74. In the end it was Waikato local Sam Towers who held his nerve to go one better with a round of 73 for a total of 147. In second place was Nathan Clark with a score of 150 and third place went to Waikato representative player Ben Ambler on 151. Benji Hao took out the nett competition with a score of 148, Waikato boy Cole Tosland finished in second place on 150. All the attention quickly shifted to the under 19 girl’s division where Tara Raj, Caitlin Maurice and Grace Jung were all tied up heading into the final hole. A playoff was almost needed but Tara Raj would not be denied beating Caitlin Maurice by one shot and Grace Jung by two shots with a score of 145. After just missing out on a prize in the gross competition Grace Jung claimed first place in the nett with a score of 148. The Boys under 19 division showed early promise of scintillating golf. CANTERBURY MCLEANS ISLAND - PRESIDENTS GRADE CHAMPIONS

The final round of Men’s Presidents Grade interclub was completed on Sunday 5 July two months later than originally scheduled due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. It was always going to be a close finish with very little between the top five or six teams, and so it proved with McLeans Island pipping Russley on the post. In the final round McLeans Island won a close match with Christchurch 4.5-3.5 at Christchurch while Russley and Clearwater couldn’t be separated playing at Clearwater finishing 4-4. These results left both Russley and

McLeans Island on top of the table with 16 points, however McLeans Island’s win was just enough to edge them past Russley with a better individual games total. Coringa finished third and Harewood fourth.

Bottle Lake’s Steve Henry, pictured with Bottle Lake Club Captain Craig Bilton, was awarded the Presidents MVP Trophy with 10 wins, 1 half and 2 losses over the 13 rounds. Close behind Steve were McLeans Island’s John Townshend and Craig Cowper.

Weedons had another stellar season backing up their success from 2019, again winning the Central Shield, Brownie Cup and Patterson Cup.

CANTERBURY NORTH DEFEAT MARLBOROUGH

The annual Canterbury North vs Marlborough Representative fixture was played at Kaikoura Golf Club last month in fine, warm conditions and the course in great order.
