bout time. Two words, three syllables, were all it took to summarise my reaction when Josh Geary rescued a faltering career with a breakthrough win in the Western Australian Open last month. That success has not quite propelled Geary from the basement to the penthouse but it certainly has given him a timely lift – and secured his PGA Tour of Australasia playing rights for this summer. And, boy, was it needed. Only months earlier Geary had been scratching around on mini circuits in the United States to pay the bills, having lost his status on the second tier web.com Tour. He had nowhere to call home, apart from the abode of his parents at Mt Maunganui. Geary had played the secondary tour for several years in the US without quite managing to lift himself above the flotsam and jetsam. But at least he had a card and somewhere to play. That all changed and he returned to New Zealand this year fully aware he was ap-

Go get ’em Josh proaching a crucial crossroads. Sure, he promptly won the Carrus Open in Tauranga, for the third time, but the domestic Charles Tour title does not register in the wider scheme of things. But it obviously gave his confidence a boost, something he stored in his luggage on the long flight to Perth before taming a field containing a host of Australians. It marked the most important moment of his career to date, a career that had seen him spend two seasons in Canada before graduating on to the secondary circuit in the US, then known as the Nationwide Tour. During those times he was one of three Kiwi tyros looked on as emerging talents. Brad Iles was another Nationwide regular tipped for success while Brad Heaven, the 2004 New Zealand Open
runnerup, was biding his time in Canada waiting for a call from Mrs Opportunity. Fast forward to today: Geary is still battling away; Heaven has turned to player management to make a living; and Iles has slipped off the radar and was last sighted wearing his trademark grin while pulling pints behind a bar in Queenstown. At 28, Geary has time to realise his undoubted potential. There is no question he has the game to prosper but golf is so fickle and plays trick with the mind. It’s a tough gig. Belief, confidence and perseverance are as important as a finely crafted swing – just ask any one of a number of Kiwi pros with the ability to take their games to a new level. Like Mike Hendry and Mark Brown, Geary would not look out of place on the biggest stage. Tim Wilkinson and Danny Lee have proven the value of hard work as they earned their PGA Tour status for the new season in the US. It’s not too late for Geary to join them at some stage. At least his win in Western Australia was a step in the right direction.

World Cup pairing named Rotorua prepares M for Seniors ike Hendry and Tim Wilkinson have been named to represent New Zealand at the lucrative World Cup of Golf in Melbourne. The 57th edition of the tournament will be staged at Royal Melbourne on November 18-24. It will comprise 60 players who will play four rounds of strokeplay, with no cut, for US$7m and another US$1m up for grabs for the teams event. Hendry and Wilkinson earned their places through their positions on the world rankings on the qualification date of September 23. Hendry, who is based on the Japan Golf Tour in 2013, returns for his second appearance at the event after finishing 16th in 2011 in China alongside Gareth Paddison. Michael Hendry. Muriwai Open on the Charles Tour. Wilkinson was the most consistent player on the web.Com Tour with a win and 10 top-15 finishes seeing him finish 10th on the moneylist in the regular season. A selection of some of golf’s biggest international stars, including Matt Kuchar (US), Matteo Manassero (Italy) and Thongchai Jaidee (Thailand) have already committed to the World Cup. New Zealand teams have a remarkable record at the World Cup. The Kiwis have played in every World Cup apart from two since it began in 1953. They have finished runners-up on two occasions – Bob Charles and Walter Godfrey in 1967 in Mexico and David Smail and Michael Campbell finished in a share of second in Japan in 2001. Frank Nobilo, who now works as an analyst for the Golf Channel in the US, holds the record for representing New Zealand the most at the World Cup with 14 appearances.
The 59th New Zealand Seniors Golf Association national tournament is to be held at the Rotorua (Arikikapakapa) Golf Club on December 2-6. The men play a medal round for best gross, stableford and nett trophies and the teams trophy, then four days of matchplay in sections of 16. The women play four days for the best overall gross, nett and stableford trophies. The best three out of the four rounds count for the stableford trophy. It is expected that about 80 men and 42 women from throughout the North Island will be taking part. Many of the players who play in this tournament have done so for a number of years and multiple NZSGA champions include A Relph (Rotorua), who won the title three times, T Furniss (St Andrews, Hamilton) and AE Wilkinson (Mount Maunganui), who both have won the title four times, and Brian Ducker (Mount Maunganui), who has been champion seven times in
the past 12 years. The NZSGA has its origins from when the Rotorua veterans tournament applied to the New Zealand Golf Council in 1927 for the tournament to be called the New Zealand veterans tournament. It has been played every year at Rotorua since 1928. This was the original veterans national tournament. The NZ Veterans Golfers Association was formed in 1957 but began holding its national tournament in the first week of December in 1955. In 2012 the name veterans was changed to seniors to bring it in line with the rest of the world. The NZSGA annual calendar of tournaments, including 49 multi-day events for men, women and mixed fields, are held around the North Island, plus two in the South Island. Those wanting to play in these tournaments need to belong to a local seniors association affiliated to the NZSGA. Men must be 55 years and above and women 50 plus.

Rebuild starts at Waimairi Beach
W
aimairi Beach have moved a step closer to becoming fully operational again after the first concrete slab was poured for their new clubhouse. The concrete pour marked an important milestone for the club which had waited over two years for this moment. The club, located in the seaside town of New Brighton in Christchurch, have already spent $1.7 million rebuilding their course after liquefaction destroyed 16 of the 18 holes in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes. Following major reconstruction, the club reopened an 18-hole course on May 1, after being postponed three times due to continued earthquake damage from subsequent quakes. The clubhouse and implement shed were also badly damaged in the February 2011 quake and were originally expected to be rebuilt in time for the May opening. However, consent was only granted in June following extensive media coverage on the club’s plight. Club manager John Herdman said it had been a “frustrating period of time” but there was now a glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel. “It’s great to finally see work actually taking place on the clubhouse site,” Herdman said. “We’re all excited to see the finished re-

The new clubhouse has been designed by architects Opus Architecture in their Christchurch studio. The building form consists of two wings
located under a simple low-pitched, hipped roof with wide eaves giving the appearance of a flat roofed pavilion. It covers about 510 square metres and is located towards the centre of the course site, providing a focal point for players starting and finishing their rounds. The interior is designed to accommodate the needs of the golf club patrons and club staff with a large clubroom / bar area, change facilities as well as a pro shop and meeting room.

Geary in breakthrough win
R
educed to scraping a living in the minitours in the United States, Josh Geary has returned home like a man on a mission. The Mt Maunganui professional lost his card on the second tier web.com Tour in the US this year and got by traipsing about the mini circuits. But his demotion has fired Geary up, as reflected in his form since, as he won the Charles Tour’s Carrus Open at Tauranga for the third time, finished tied for 20th in the Western Australian PGA Championship then collected his first victory on the PGA Tour of Australasia with a five-stroke win in the Western Australian Open at Mount Lawley. The 28-year-old fired a seven-under-par 65 in the final round at Mount Lalwey for a 72-hole total of 15-under 273. “I set out there with high hopes and played great all day,” Geary said.
“I kept within myself and managed to finish it off quite nicely.” Geary, who won the Carrus Open by the small matter of eight strokes, began the final round in WA one shot behind overnight leader Kris Mueck, of Victoria, said he was pretty comfortable as he chased his first title on Australian soil. “I was pretty relaxed, I tried to stay calm and not let the outside influences affect what I was doing. You always want to have the battle on the final day. But it’s nice to know I had it somewhat sewn up if I played within myself.” Geary’s victory saw him join an impressive list of past WA Open champions, including the likes of Gary Player, Greg Norman, Ian Baker-Finch, Brett Rumford and Stephen Leaney. “It has been six or seven years now that I have been trying for a win,” Geary said. “The highest hurdle is the first one. Now I have broken
through I should be good for the near future.” Geary’s latest victory earned him a start in the following week’s Perth International and, more importantly, secured his Tour card for the remainder of this season and 2014. “This means a lot right now, especially with my status,” said Geary, who attended PGA Tour of Australasia qualifying school earlier this year. “It also assures me starts all summer. It is huge from my career point of view.” He is sure he will make an impact this summer. “I have been hitting it well and putting great. My head is in a good place, too. I think I am ready for another couple of wins.”

ew Zealand Golf has named a strong team to contest the 2013 Asia-Pacific amateur teams championship in Thailand on November 14-17. Vaughan McCall (Gore), Joshua Munn (Manawatu), Luke Toomey (Lochiel) and Cameron Jones (Gulf Harbour) (pictured above, left to right) have been selected for the Nomura Cup event at the Santiburi Country Club in Chiang Rai. New Zealand Golf high performance manager Gregg Thorpe believed the
team had a great chance of claiming the title for the second time. “These guys have performed consistently both home and abroad in the past 18 months and have earned their place on merit,” Thorpe said. “Vaughan and Josh are seasoned competitors at the international level while Luke and Cameron have shown some exciting form in 2013 to be selected in the senior team for the first time. It is a great opportunity for them to perform on a big stage. “We believe that we have
a well-balanced team who will very competitive and represent New Zealand well at this prestigious event.” The last time New Zealand held aloft the Nomura Cup was in 1995 when it was held at Russley in Christchurch. The Nomura Cup is a biennial competition rotated among the Asia-Pacific region. It was first held in the Philippines in 1963. It features four-man teams in 18 holes of strokeplay for four days. In each round the best three out of four scores constitutes the team score for the round.

Keh making winning a habit Neho fourth in

uckland’s leading female amateur Munchin Keh has delivered a fine come-from-behind win to claim the Carrus Open in Tauranga. The 21-year-old (Titirangi), who began in a share of the lead with Tyla Kingi (Opitiki) and professional Jenna Hunter carded an even-par 72 which was good enough to hold off Waikato’s Hanna Seifert by one stroke and win back to back Charles Tour titles. “I am pretty relieved and excited to win,” Keh said after returning a 72-hole total of 296 following rounds of 74, 76, 74 and 72. “It is great to win here on my first time playing this tournament. I didn’t play too well in the first two rounds but I fought my way back into contention. “It is great to win two titles in a row (on The Charles Tour)... I am looking forward to coming back here again next year.” Seifert had a hot start to be the player to beat. She birdied three out of the opening five holes of the last round to jump out to a three-shot lead and retained that advantage after 10 holes. But a calamitous four-putt on the par-three 12th, the infamous Knoll, which resulted in a double bogey, saw her drop back to the pack. Keh, who won the New Zealand amateur championship in 2012 at Mount Maunganui, birdied the 13th and 14th to seize her opportunity and get back into a share of the lead at eight-over. Seifert found the left trees with

her tee shot on 18 and failed to get up and down from in front of the green to open the door for her Auckland counterpart. Keh was her typical methodical self down the last. She found the middle of the fairway, the heart of the green and two-putted for victory. “Going down 18 I wasn’t too sure what I needed to do to win so it was a nice feeling to know that I had done enough.” It continued her remarkable record in 2013. Keh had earlier won the North Island and South Island strokeplay titles and the Charles Tour’s Muriwai Open. “It’s been a great year. I have made a few changes and they are working out so that is good. I have been putting in a lot of time on my short game and I have some new irons and it is all going well.” Keh is looking forward to being

Gillespie shines at Kilgoorlie

ellingt o n pro Nick Gillespie has finished runner-up at the Western Australia PGA Championship in Kalgoorlie. The 25-year-old carded a three-under-par 69 in the final round to finish on a 10-under total of 278, level with trainee professional Jack Wilson, before the Australian prevailed on the first hole of the playoff. Wilson, 22, of Melbourne, is the first trainee to win a PGA Tour of Australasia title. Gillespie, a former New Zealand ama-
teur representative searching for his first win since claiming the Shirley Open in 2011 on the Charles Tour, shot rounds of 69, 67, 73 and 69 for a strong showing in a quality field. He handled the pressure superbly in the final round with four birdies and a bogey to come from behind and force extra holes. But he came up just short of securing his first pro title on Australian soil in sudden death. Kieran Muir was the next best of the Kiwis when he carded a 70 in the final round to finish in a share of 13th place on 287.

aipu golfers Craig Duffus and Ian Kitchen are the Best Ball champions for 2013. Their combined total of 90 stableford points was enough to beat off Runners up Rhys Collins and Brett Carsburg (88 points) from Kingaroy QLD. Third place on count back was awarded to local Auckland Golfers Roger Sowman, and Barry Dyer (87 points) who won the Formosa club event from Mike Dearmer and Anthony Dearmer (TeMarua NZ). Ian and Craig played consistent golf over the two days with day 1 score 44 pts and day 2 round 46 pts. The prize giving night was not without its drama as the event was originally called a tie with the Runners up called the Winner on count back. The administrative error was soon corrected and Ian and Craig announced the winners on the night. All prizes as announced are honoured. Dean Murphy The value of the Charles Tour
T
he legacy of the Charles Tour having an impact on our elite golfers’ careers has continued in emphatic fashion. Josh Geary, who recently won the WA Open for his first win on the PGA Tour of Australasia, only two weeks after winning the Carrus Open, said the Charles Tour was vital for his game heading into a busy summer without a card. “I love what the Charles Tour is doing as well and it is good to see it growing and giving our top amateurs and rookie pros the chance to play four round competitive golf. It is also good for guys like me who don’t really have too much to play in when you miss your card,” Geary said. Geary had lost his card on the web.com Tour and came home to Tauranga to put “the best form of his life” to the test in a tournament format. He performed superbly in testing con-
ditions to record an eightshot win – and his third in as many starts at Tauranga – and then went on to record a top 20 and his most important win in Perth. It is for this reason that Geary, like most of our elite players, “will play the Charles Tour at every opportunity I get because they are an important stepping stone to get ready for bigger events”. Geary is not alone. Recently, Jim Cusdin, who won his first four round pro event at the Carrus Open in 2011, secured the Queensland Sunshine Tour 2012-13 order of merit title. The Waikato pro is now eying qualifying for the Asian Tour. New Zealand No 1 Michael Hendry recorded his first four-round win as a professional at the Carrus Open before he went on to win the New Zealand PGA Championship twice. Mark Brown, a two-time winner on the Charles Tour, used the local series to

New Zealand Golf Chief Executive relaunch his professional career and he won the Sail Open and then the Johnnie Walker Classic to secure his European Tour card. There are also a host of elite amateurs like Joshua Munn, Cameron Jones, Fraser Wilkin, Ben Campbell, Luke Toomey and Kadin Neho, to mention a few, who have gone on to great things after benchmarking themselves against players like Geary, Hendry and Brown. World No 1 amateur Lydia Ko was desperate for competition and the quality men’s fields at Charles Tour events provided the superstar teen with players to measure herself against. The list of Charles Tour champions and their international success is extensive. There is no doubt in the value of playing four round professional tournaments at some of the county’s finest layouts, and the chance for our best to mentor the up and comers, is producing results. We are very appreciative of the likes of Carrus, ask>metro, Taranaki Energy, John Jones Steel and LawnMaster (and others) who have made staging Charles Tour events possible. We currently have five events – LawnMaster Classic (Manawatu), Taranaki Energy Open, ask>metro Muriwai Open, Carrus Open (Tauranga) and the John
Jones Steel Harewood Open. We need more to continue building this pathway and get more players on tours and winning around the world which, as we have seen with Lydia and Cambo, has a phenomenal impact on our game. With the increased media coverage that the Charles Tour also offers golf clubs and sponsors receive real value. We encourage clubs and corporates, who have an interest in golf, to look into supporting a Charles Tour event in their province as we look to develop it further. The goal for the local series is to have 10 events at great courses all over New Zealand and now is the time for pushing this forward. We believe in the concept and have invested in it significantly over the past six years. We look forward to building on The Charles Tour in 2014 and if you want to get involved we’d love to hear from you. As Mark Brown said: “The Charles Tour is great. Love the concept and it is really working. We just need more of them. There are five at the moment and I will play them as often as I can but we need more. It would be great to see eight to 10 Charles Tour events all around New Zealand and it be a thriving local tour. It is a great concept and something that we need to build on to continue its legacy.”

Andrew Whiley
Resident Pro at Chisholm Park, Dunedin
Three pros share their thoughts T he New Zealand PGA is celebrating its centenary and, in doing so, recognising the heritage and history of the membership of golf in this country. I think it is important to acknowledge the contributions that professionals have made and are currently making to golfers and the golf industry in New Zealand. I’ve focused on just a few profiles of current PGA members as they share their experience in the industry. Terry Kelso works at Golf Warehouse and specialises in clubmaking and club repair and is a life member of the PGA, Kim Southerden is the head professional at the Napier Golf Club and Andre White is the head professional at the Manawatu Golf Club. How long have you been a NZPGA member? And what is your current role? Kelso: I’ve been a member for 53 years; currently I do club repairs and club assembly. I was the head golf professional at Titirangi Golf Club from 1975- 1989.
Southerden: I turned pro in 1976 and joined the PGA in 1977. I have been the head professional at the Napier Golf Club since 1983 but worked there since ’76. White: I started my traineeship in 1985 and I am currently the head professional at the Manawatu Golf Club Do you see any difference between what you do today in the golf industry compared to when you started? Southerden: The role change is huge, from sanding, staining, varnishing, whipping, sole plates, inserts, reshafts, grips to driving range operation, cart hire and maintenance, graphite shaft-fitting, titanium heads, computers and doing a lot
...it is important to acknowledge the contributions that professionals have made and are currently making to golfers
more for the club. White: Club professionals are far more involved in the day-to-day running of the club than they used to be and therefore far more professional in what they do. The traineeships are far more structured and give those graduating a better allround qualification that can take them around the world. Kelso: Chalk and cheese. Back then there were only three club brands locally produced, everything was imported with strict controls so you had to order everything well in advance. There was much more support for club pros then. Golf was mainly a winter sport. What do you love about your job? White: We are in the business of helping people enjoy their leisure time more and the biggest rewards come from hearing that someone has just had their best score, most stableford points, won their first match or enjoyed their first tournament experience. Golf is a pastime for 99 percent of people and therefore when they enjoy their time at the course, we
have done our job well. Kelso: The people you meet. Southerden: Meeting some wonderful people and seeing their enjoyment when they have a good day on the course after we have made a few swing improvements. What have been the highlights in your career in the golf industry? Kelso: Becoming a PGA member, the people I have met and played with, becoming a life member of the PGA, being at the British Open at Troon in ’82. Southerden: Playing the European Tour in 1980, representing New Zealand in the World Cup at Princeville in Hawaii in 1978 and winning tournaments, including the Pacific Harbour Open in Fiji. White: Winning trainee of the year when I qualified as a PGA professional; winning retailer of the year not long after I started as a club professional. The first time one of my students, Tim Wilkinson, earned a PGA Tour card.

ccording to the British Golf Museum, the first mention of the word “professional” was in 1775 when Patrick Robertson was described as a “ballmaker and professional golfer”. The term “professional” did not come into common use until the 1850s when a handful of golfers, headed by Allan Robertson, began to make a living from golf, rather relying such as weaving or labouring. Robertson was the greatest professional of his generation, reputed to have never been beaten when playing a match – at least for money. However, he was primarily a ballmaker who typically made and sold 2500 “featheries” a year. A feather ball contained a phenomenal quantity of feathers. The last feathers had to be forced in using a metal brace harnessed to the maker’s chest, which must have contributed to breathing difficulties and poor health, especially if you were producing 10 a day as Robertson was. Although he later moved to making gutta percha balls, Robertson died in 1859 at the age of 44. A collection was taken up for his widow, and indirectly this stimulated the first Open Championship at Prest-
New Zealand PGA Chief Executive
The changing role of the PGA professional wick in 1860. Robertson’s contemporary Tom Morris was also a ballmaker, and was curator of the Old Course for nearly 40 years. He played in many Open Championships and high stakes matches, but he probably spent more time slashing gorse and fashioning balls from gutta percha than playing golf. By the time he died in 1908, many of the professionals who had followed in his wake had left Scotland for Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. One year earlier, the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland had been founded, although it took many years after that for golf professionals to find their place in a game that was marked by elitism and class distinction, especially outside Scotland. The next generations of golf professionals did not make balls, which were then mass produced, but they continued to turn their hands to almost every other facet of the game, from clubmaking and
repair, course design, coaching, club management and, of course, playing in tournaments and matches where they could. Today’s PGA professionals mirror many of these functions, and our trainees undergo a comprehensive three-year course of instruction encompassing these and the science and technology of golf. In fact, the topics they study: physiology, the anatomy of the golf swing, nutrition, psychology, marketing and business management, are as far removed from the skills of the early professionals as the feathery golf ball is from its modern equivalents. At the core, though, is the ability to play golf at the highest level of skill possible, and to grow the game by instructing others to play better. That has never changed from the days of Allan Robertson onwards, and never will. The 12 professionals who founded the PGA of New Zealand in Dunedin in 1913 would no doubt be bemused to see the equipment and accessories required
to play the game today: Titanium drivers and graphite shafts instead of steel and hickory; the technology in the modern ball; lasers and range finders; video swing analysis and launch monitors, course simulators, statistical analysis and so on. They would have been intrigued by modern wet weather gear, as opposed to the Norfolk jackets and plus fours which were their only protection against the elements. Equally they would have been bewildered by the tendency today to suspend play in conditions that to them would have been the norm, if not verging on the benign, and by the need to take four and a half hours or more to complete 18 holes of golf. In the end, though, they would be gratified by the spread and popularity of the game around the world, and we should salute their part in creating this, as we do with the hundreds of qualified professionals who have built the PGA of New Zealand since that early meeting in the City Hotel, Dunedin, on October 15, 1913.

Professional coaching on all aspects of your game at Wairakei’s School of Golf
W
airakei Golf and Sanctuary Golf school programme is the ultimate package, being coached through all aspects of your game in a professionally designed 3 day programme. The programme includes 2 rounds of 9 holes, 1 round of 18 holes, with coaching DVD. Areas covered are Tee and Fairway play, short game, bunker play, and putting, course management, odd lies and subconscious Golf. Resident Golf School PGA Professional Steven Jessup says it’s “ the individual mentoring that sets the programme apart from other Golf Schools. Our programme is comprehensive covering all aspects of the game”. “The main objective of day one is to ensure all fundamentals of grip, set up etc are sound and to identify key swing faults and how to go about rectifying them. I am mindful of the fact that in order for
the player to make a swing change they must first understand why it is necessary. Without this knowledge it is unlikely a change will occur, particularly one that remains long term” said Steven. “Our first day is to meet me and other pupils in the school. It is also a good opportunity to convey to me a little of your golfing history and importantly what you want to get out of the school and your golf in general.“said Steven. “In the afternoon we move to the driving range to get video footage of everyone’s swing. This enables not only me but also players to closely analyse their swing through the frame-by-frame shots from the digital camera. In the initial stages of this session we also take time to cover the pre-swing fundamentals of grip, aim, set-up and posture. Later on day 1 we move to the course. The 9 holes played in this session are used for you to help ease into your swing change in a more realistic environment.
It also gives me a great opportunity to see how you actually play, which can be quite different to how you hit balls on the range.“comented Steven. “Early on day 2 we focus on chipping. Here we simulate an on course situation in covering then expanding on basic short game techniques. The time spent on this close range part of the game often proves invaluable, the biggest asset being the ability to practice in on course environment under the watchful eye of Steven.” Then, it’s back to the Driving Range. Here we pick up with the full swing from the previous day. We like to allow time for the initial change to feel somewhat comfortable and if possible add to it, furthering your knowledge and potential as a golfer. In the early afternoon the focus is on Putting, and bunker training. In the putting session we cover fundamentals and preferences in this important aspect of the game. We appreciate the length of the session does not reflect the impor-
tance of the art to the game but like to expand on the basics learnt in this session while on the golf course itself. With 108 bunkers around the course, chances are you would have played the odd bunker shot. In this session attention is focussed on using your sand wedge in the way it has been designed to best get through the sand and make the often dreaded bunker shot something you will not have to panic about again. Then our final day together, back to the Driving Range, with a final wrap up of your swing and a further opportunity to practice under the guidance of Steven Jessup. Followed by an updated Video, then back to the course to apply the practical lessons learnt. Then to wrap up the 3 days, is an enjoyable 18 Holes playing the championship Wairakei Golf and Sanctuary course. The Fairview success story - how vision and commitment can build a great Golf Club, Country Club and living environment
T
he golf course in Katikati has seen many changes since it was rebranded by its new owners in October 2011 to Fairview. Since rebranding the owners have invested millions of dollars into the course, its infrastructure and new equipment. Their vision is to make Fairview one of the pre-eminent golf courses in the Bay Of Plenty region. To make this a reality they have focussed on two main areas, the course itself and the Country Club facilities. Fairview is naturally blessed with good contours, an attractive aspect and superb stands of mature trees, but it takes more than beautiful scenery to make a quality golf course. One of the first realisations of the Fairview vision was to appoint Owen Williams as the new Course Superintendent. Owen was NZGCSA Graduate of the Year in 2011 and, in conjunction with the new owners, is in charge of implementing
16 GOLFER PACIFIC November 2013
the course development plan for Fairview. To get the plan underway, new course maintenance machinery was purchased, and a comprehensive in ground irrigation plan was implemented with over half of the greens and tees already completed. The full length and covered driving range was also given an upgrade, including new mats, balls, pins and distance markers and a full stocked golf shop was established with Nick Wilson appointed as the Director of Golf. With his NZPGA AA accreditation Nick offers coaching to all levels including being responsible for the junior programme. The huge amount of improvement to the course and facilities has not gone unnoticed by the golfing community with Fairview sporting a 135% increase in membership numbers since the rebranding. Both Owen and Nick are very enthusiastic about the natural advantages of the beautiful Fairview course and the way it
has responded to the development plan, to the point where Fairview held its first Pro Am in December 2012. It was a successful and well-attended event over two days, with touring pro’s Josh Geary and Brad Iles among others playing for the $20,000 prize money. Craig Perks, winner of The Player’s Championship in 2002, attended
as guest speaker. Fairview looks forward to hosting its second Pro-Am on December 6 and 7 this year and is currently taking entries, for which the pros will be playing for $25,000 in prize money making it the highest purse of any Pro-Am golf tournament in New Zealand.

Te Puke Golf Course The Te Puke golf club has been at several locations in its history, but bought its present site in 1978. Golf was first played at Golf Te Puke in 1979. The trees were planted at this time, and the huge growth reflects the site’s history as an old dairy farm, with residual fertiliser. The Te Puke Golf Course was designed by Harry Dale, who has designed many golf courses in the Bay of Plenty area. His original concept drawings show that his design has been maintained over the years. Recently there have been some changes under the eye of Denis Clark who has prepared a 20 year plan for the Te Puke golf course’s future development. Golf Te Puke has been described as the best laid out course in the Bay , with it’s undulating fairways, mature specimen trees and water feature with fountain, and recently with Course Superintendant, Michael Homer, lifting the standards of the greens, the course is quickly gaining a reputation for the place to play in the Bay. With on-site NZPGA Professional Nicholas Davey, the club boasts a fully stocked Golf Shop and the ability to provide professional lessons to all levels of golfer. Juniors get free lessons

Omokoroa Golf Club Omanu Golf Club
Omokoroa Golf Club is situated on a small peninsula on the Tauranga Harbour. It is a very flat course built on the harbours edge, and our 3rd and 5th fairways are below sea level. We have 5 different tees, so can cater for golfers of all abilities. And even though we are only 20 mins north of Tauranga, and 15 south of Katkati, we are a friendly country course that is so quiet, you can often only hear the birds and the waves lapping on the shore. In August 2011 we hosted the NZ Mens U19 Champs and there were only 10 rounds under par, out of over 300, which shows the
challenge the course can offer from its back tees. Our course has produced many great golfers over the years from NZ reps Jan Higgins, Stephen Scahill and Andrew Stewart to current touring professionals Kieran Muir and Ben Taylor. So make sure you get out soon to enjoy this hidden gem. You’ll find Omokorao Golf Club on Links View Drive, which from the State Highway 2, turn onto Omokoroa Rd, onto Kaylene Place and onto Links View Drive. For more information, phone 5480384, fax 5482384, or email info@omokoroagolf.co.nz

FEATURE: AUCKLAND
Come join us in Auckland for an unforgettable experience. TEST OUT THE 8TH AT MARAMARUA Located just half an hour from Manukau, you can enjoy the peace of the country while still being close to Auckland at Maramarua Golf Club. You will also experience one of the best golf courses in the region. The eighth hole at Maramarua requires a long tee shot to the right of a wide fairway. The fairway has trees on both sides, which protect out of bounds on the far right anda hazard on the left. Shots to the left hand side don’t get a shot at the green as this is blocked by mature pine trees.
Having placed your 220m-plus drive on the right-hand side of the fairway you have a daunting approach shot over a rock-surrounded pond to a two-tiered green. If the pin is on the top level the landing area is small. Here you will be faced with the decision whether to aim for the top and risk an overshot of play to the lower area and guarantee a difficult two putt. Either way, it’s one heck of a hole! For more information on the course, visit maramarua.co.nz or phone 64 09 232 5702.

Unfortunately no winner but another sponsor EZGO Golf Carts sponsored a hole in one.
On this hole the tee shot lipped the cup but stayed out. Hard luck Frances Price. The Club this past year has increased its fleet of hire carts, put in additional cart paths, improved drainage and undertook improvement to its bunkers and tees. The Grange: Auckland’s premier parkland golf course
F
ounded on the current site in 1924, The Grange Golf Club remains one of New Zealand’s premier parkland golf courses. The testing Par 70 layout has seen 8 New Zealand Opens held at the Club, and a variety of other top National events. A combination of tight dogleg fairways, fairway and greenside bunkering, lateral and water hazards and perimeter out of bounds creates a a tight layout where careful placement of drives is critical. The greens are large and well contoured, again requiring well thought out approaches to leave the ball under the hole. The introduction of fairway watering has meant that The Grange is eminently playable in all seasons, and really comes in to its own in dry summer months. At a recently held 36 hole Pro Am, the course and its preparation were praised by visiting Professionals as being right up to NZ Open standards, and the winning Professional score of 2 under was testament to the challenging championship conditions. The Grange has always had a reputation as being a friendly club with visitors and members alike enjoying the social aspects of the game, as well

Northland Golf Development Manager Michael Macdonald is confident that a first ever win at last weekend’s Inter District Quadrangular at Auckland’s Akarana Golf Club has the Northland side poised for more positive results ahead. “This is the first time in the 26 year history of the event that Northland has won this trophy and the boys are excited about the opportunity to repeat the feat at next month’s Garrard Shield. “Keeping the same core group of players together has been huge in developing depth in the squad and we can now say we are competitive from one to eight in the line-up.” Another result that pleased Macdonald was the team defending the Auckland v Northland Rosebowl in the opening round by 4.5-3.5. “Northland had won the Rosebowl once in the first 30 odd years of competition and to have now claimed it in back to back years is huge and is testament to the hard work the guys are putting in” Round two saw Northland dominate Taranaki 7-1 to set themselves up in the ideal position for a final round decider

against Waikato who had earlier defeated Taranaki by the same margin before going down to Auckland 5.5-2.5 in the afternoon session. Waikato would prevail over Northland in the final round by 5-3 while Auckland defeated Taranaki 4.5-3.5. This left Auckland, Northland and Waikato with 2 wins a piece meaning the title was decided on a count back of individual match points won. Again Northland and Waikato were tied on 14.5 points meaning the Councillors Cup for the leading senior side was shared. Top performers for the side were captain Brad Bonnington (Wellsford), Lee Neumann (Northland) and Alex Neely (BOI Kerikeri) with 3 wins each and Luke Brown (The Pines) with two. In the junior competition the considerably younger Northland contingent of Taylor Gill (BOI Kerikeri) Julian Fowler (Northland), Christian Nitsche (Whangarei) and Ben Bowmar (Whangarei) competed well drawing two all with Taranaki and Waikato and suffering a narrow 2.51.5 loss to Auckland. This left the side in third in the competition for the Presidents Cup. Fowler was the stand out performer continuing a rich vein of form of late by winning all three of his matches. Selectors have slightly reshuffled the line-up for the Garrard Shield and Ralph Cup in three weeks’ time following the weekend’s results and regular number one Kadin Neho’s unavailability due to selection to represent New Zealand at the Argentinian Amateur Championship.

NORTHLAND JUNIOR AGE GROUP CHAMPIONSHIP Whangarei Golf Club hosted the next generation of Northland golf talent on Sunday for the Northland Junior Age Group Championship. Course conditions were excellent with fine but breezy conditions providing a challenge. The morning session saw the champions crowned in the younger grades, the Under 13 Boys (18 holes) and Kiwi Competition (9 holes). Bradley Foster (Whangaroa) claimed the U13 Boys Gross title with a round of 91 with Tarrin Rous (Mangawhai) the Net competition winner. The Kiwi Competition that included five girls and three boys was won by Danielle Ngakuru (Whangarei) and Setiny Pheng (Northland) each with 29 stableford. The older participants competed over 36 holes, in the U16 Girls division an opening 81 from Jodi Macalister (Northern Wairoa) gave her a one stroke lead from Sok-

Situated on the edge of the Manukau harbour forty minutes south of Auckland, the town of Waiuku sports a fabulous free draining eighteen hole course with a squash centre attached. The club hosts some significant events throughout the year, none greater than the Waiuku New World Pro-Am where this year thirty eight professionals from around New Zealand did battle with Dean Sipson coming out on top in a six hole playoff with a 68 , three under par on a truly testing day. taerodh Sean (Northland) after 18 holes. The two girls would have a close battle all day, Macalister taking a three shot lead into the final nine holes of the second round before eventually prevailing by just a single stroke. All was not lost for Sean as she would claim the Girls Best Net trophy. A first round 73 had Julian Fowler (Northland) as the man to catch in the U16 Boys division, opening up a three shot lead over Daniel Millett (Northland) after round one. Fowler, the reigning New Zealand Junior Tiger Champion was out to prove a point however and went on to post the round of the tournament, a three under par 69 that included six birdies. Millett would fire a second round 75 and comfortably claim second place. The Net trophy went to Steven Lang (Northland) with a pair of 69’s with James Hydes (Sherwood Park) runner up. Both the Net and Gross titles were closely contested in the Boys U19 division. The gross was a close tussle between the current and the former Northland senior number ones, Kadin Neho (Whangarei) and Luke Brown (The Pines). Neho held the early advantage with an opening 70 against a 71 from Brown. The roles reversed heading into the final 9 holes though with Brown a single stroke ahead. Neho again turned the tables however showing the resolve that lead him to the New Zealand Amateur title earlier in the year to eventually win by three strokes. The Net title went to Jamie Thomas (Wellsford) who piped Brown by
one with a fine up and down at the last for par.

BAY OF PLENTY GOLF TRAIL GREAT MONTH FOR BOP REPS October has turned out to be a stellar month for our representative teams with firstly our boys winning the Junior Interprovincial title (pictured below) then the following week our young ladies achieving
LUCKY STUCKY Eighty three year old Russell Stuck who is one of our extraordinary volunteers at the Cambridge Junior Inter Provincial
the quinella at the Girls Interprovincial at Arikikapakapa (pictured below).
The only blemish in the Boys performance was a 4 all draw with Waikato and it was fitting that the two top sides, North Harbour and Bay of Plenty, went head to head in the final round at Cambridge. Back in 2004 the same sides met in the final which also went down to the wire where the Bay number 1 – a 14 year old by the name of Danny Lee birdied the last to defeat Sam Shin and give the Bay their first title. This year it was the outstanding Te Puke 16 year old Charlie Hillier who kept his composure to defeat Tadhg Campbell 1up and seal the victory. The Bay team defeated Manawatu/ Wanganui 4.5 to 3.5, Northland 4.5 to 3.5,halved with Waikato, defeated Auckland 5.5 to 2.5, Hawkes Bay 7.5 to 0.5, Eastland 7.5 to 0.5 and North Harbour 4.5 to 3.5. Also special mention to Mount Maunganui’s Andrew Jackson who was the only player to go through the tournament with 7 wins.
The following week saw a record 10 teams tee off at the Girls Interprovincial at the Rotorua Golf Club with Canterbury and Bay of Plenty making it through to Friday’s final. Bay number 1 Alanna Campbell put on an outstanding performance in the final and was 5 under the card when her match ended. But Canterbury secured the next two matches and it was only on the 18th that Jazmin Brown sealed the victory with Madison Gartner and Erikah Waiariki also recording wins. Going through undefeated at number one Alanna Campbell was the winner of the Patsy Hankin trophy as Player of the tournament.

HAWKE’S BAY POVERTY BAY GOLF TRAIL Members Support Fundraiser Money definitely doesn’t grow on trees, but at Hastings Golf Club, they’ve working hard to ‘grow’ money for their trees! The members at Hastings Golf Club take great pride in having a picturesque course with views of the mountains, and a course that is nestled in amongst well established native trees. As part of their development programme, plans are in place for planting a substantial number of new trees, to enhance the outlook of the course. To help raise funds for this initiative, management at Hastings Golf Club organised a successful ‘Tree Fundraiser Tournament’, held on 12 October. With Pairs Combined Stableford format, the tournament’s focus was on fun and meeting new people. “It was a very social day. I have been a member at Hastings Golf Club for 7 years, and even I met other members for the first time, who have been playing at Bridge Pa for over 5 years. Mixing up the players proved to be very successful,” says tourna-

ment organiser, David Mackenzie. 47 pairs participated in the two shotgun starts. Whilst the weather forecast was for wind and rain, the Hawke’s Bay weather proved its merit, and gave the competitors ideal playing conditions, allowing for a very enjoyable round of golf. “We would like to thank our sponsors, who were very generous in offering spot prizes at the end of the day – ANZ, Hawke’s Bay Racing Club, Melita Honey, Mike Piper, Peter Clayton & Judy Lyons,” says David. Other members have indicated they would like to supply discounted products or prizes for future events to help the club. The Hastings Golf Club ‘Combined Stableford Fundraiser Tournament’ raised a total of $1,580 which will go towards planting new native trees on the course. “We intend on running another round of the tournament on Sunday the 15th of December, and we welcome all to get involved,” states David. “Thank you to everyone who supported us in our fundraising efforts.”
MANAWATU WANGANUI WELLINGTON TRAIL SIR BOB CHARLES PROMOTES NEW IDEAS FOR THE GAME New Zealand’s patriarch of Golf Sir Bob Charles recently attended his own 47th Sir Bob Charles tournament and Classic played at Masterton Golf club. Sir Bob spoke about new ideas for the game. He said “golf is to be enjoyable and with the average age of golfers increasing thought should be made about the introduction of more different coloured tees. Reducing the length will enable older golfers to still play their preferred golf clubs to greens and the new golfers to manage the length of course whilst making the game enjoyable.” Sir Bob also spoke about the need to introduce new forms of the game to attract younger members and also promote the game to children through the many initiatives that come from national and local initiatives like first tees.
This year was particularly noteworthy as the field included Sir Bob himself and his childhood friend local member Merv Brown who did the honours of caddie. Sir Bob first joined the Masterton Golf Club as a 15 year old in 1951 and quickly went on to win the NZ Open at Heretaunga in 1953 and then accomplish his greatest feat, to win the Open Championship in 1963. As it is 50 years since that win it was tremendous to have Sir Bob play in the tournament After a golf demonstration on Saturday Sir Bob played with two other knights, Sir Brian Lochore and Sir William Southgate On the Sunday while he played with three of Wellington’s promising juniors, 9 year old Mia Scrimgeour, Kerry Mountcastle and Daniel Hillier.Sir Bob is a great supporter of junior golfers and was a great final day for the tournament. The Sir Bob Charles Trophy, for left handers, was won by Grenville Burton from Ian Buchanan while the Sir Bob Charles Classic trophy was won by Masterton right hander, Kerry Mountcastle after a playoff with Sam Forrester. Grenville Burton also won the Clark trophy for the best left handers nett round of the tournament and evergreen Geoff Ingram won the Percy Holland Cup for

123 golfers from all over New Zealand, plus one Andy Elkins who travelled from the USA to take part, were welcomed to this exciting new tournament fresh to the New Zealand golf calendar. Each and every one of them went away with a smile on their faces. This tournament was a great success, despite the usually sunny Nelson weather not coming to the party. The first day at Nelson dawned sunny yet breezy with the super fast greens giving players a real challenge. Everyone was extremely complimentary about the layout of Nelson’s glorious golf course – beautifully presented in top class condition by Superintendant Brendon O’Hara and his team.

Mens Div 2: Murray West (Nelson) 39 points. Tuesday at Motueka Golf Club showed the competitors the real difference in the variety of the regions golf courses, and again the course was presented in great condition by the greens staff. The players loved the tree lined layout and the results reflected that with good scores being recorded. Tuesday winners: Ladies: Janeyann Boreham (Tokoroa) 40 points. Mens Div 1: Terry Allen (Rarangi) 42 points. Mens Div 2: John Dow (Nelson) 40 points. The Wednesday rest day proved to be a
real feature allowing the field to explore and enjoy some of the many activities the region has to offer. Thursday at Greenacres Golf Club started dry but turned to rain later yet did not dampen the spirits of our hardy competitors. Another beautifully turned out course provided more good scores, which made for another competitive day and showed the talent of the golfers we had in this event. Thursday winners: Ladies: Sue Kennedy (Helensville) 37 points c/b; Mens Div 1: Luken Chamberlain (Takaka) 40 points; Mens Div 2: Bob Fitzgerald (Nelson) 38 points Friday, back at Nelson Golf Club, was the final day of the tournament and unfortunately the weather really tried to spoil things with rain and high winds causing troubling conditions for the players. Tournament Director, Derek Drysdale, had to make a difficult call on the day, with the wind so strong that the balls were being blown off the greens. He suspended play and eventually was forced to cancel the rest of the days play as the forecast was for continuing high winds. The tournament was subsequently reduced to a 3 day event, with the daily prizes on Friday being decided on reduced holes. Friday winners: (Based on restricted holes.) Ladies: Katrina Manaena (Greenacres); Mens Div 1: Ben Culbertson (Opotiki); Mens Div 2: Derek Clarkson (Masterton). The winning teams with best 3 out of 4 scores daily were: Philip & Lena Houng Lee (Titirangi) and John Dow & Linda Dow (Nelson) 316; Murray and Maree West (Nelson) & Kevin (North Shore) and Sue Kennedy (Helensville) 301; Simon Parle & Dennis Andrews (Nelson), Glynne Selman (Napier) & Charles Bark (Waitangi) 301. The major prize giving lunch followed in the newly refurbished Nelson clubhouse. The Club recently benefited from a makeover grant from Resene Paint via the ANZ Golf TV Show. A team of hardworking volunteers painted the entire exterior of the clubhouse, finishing just in time for the tournament. At the prize giving there was a real buzz in the clubhouse with everyone enjoying the wonderful lunch provided by Jamie & Sofia Morris of the 19th café at the Nelson Club, along with sampling some wonderful local wines from one of our sponsors, Waimea Family Estate, from Nelson. The newly elected Nelson Mayor, Rachel Reese, took time out of her very busy schedule to come and welcome all the competitors to the region. Rachel expressed her thanks to them all for making this such an outstanding event. Rachel commented that Nelson City Council became involved as they were very keen for this tournament to become an annual event, coinciding with the Nelson Arts Festival encouraging visitors to enjoy the region in springtime. Rachel presented the prizes to the major winners of the tournament: (All scores based on 3 rounds) Ladies Stableford: Linda Dow (Nelson) 105 points; Ladies Gross: Katrina Manaena (Greenacres) 249; Mens Div 1 Stableford: Abe Aukaha (Lakeview) 104 c/b; Mens Div 1 Gross: Kevin Armstrong (Nelson) 232; Mens Div 2 Stableford: John Dow (Nelson) 110 points; Mens Div 2 Gross: Derek Clarkson (Masterton) 269. Tournament Director Derek Drysdale thanked the Major Sponsors of the tournament, namely, Nelson City Council – Jennian Homes – Waimea Family Estate Wines – Bowater Motor Group and Taylor Made Golf, for their fantastic support in bringing this tournament to the region. “We couldn’t have done it without them, and they have been an integral part of something that will become a regular event in the

region. I can’t thank them enough. Unfortunately, none of the competitors could take advantage of the Hole in One Challenge that Bowater Motor Group put on offer. There were luxury cars up for grabs for a Hole in One throughout the tournament, but they’ll maybe have better luck next year! It’s another reason they’ll be coming back again” Derek said. He also went on to thank his organising committee, Harry Hall, Maggie Davidson, Euan Milne, Jeane Drysdale and Nelson golf professional Glyn Delany. “We all know these events don’t just happen, and the whole team have worked tirelessly to make this such an enjoyable tournament, I would personally like to thank them all for their efforts. They
have been truly superb.” Despite having to make such a difficult call to reduce the tournament to a 3 day event, Derek and his team were rewarded for all their efforts by a standing ovation from the floor. The Nelson Festival of Golf had proved to be a huge success boosting a great working partnership between the region’s diverse golf clubs – encouraging golfers to spread the word and return to play in this wonderful part of New Zealand.
FIDELITY LIFE OPEN
Over 140 players from all over the region, and as far afield as North America, faced trying conditions for the playing of the 2nd Fidelity Open at Nelson Golf Club. The field enjoyed the event which offered a fabulous prize table valued at over a staggering $7,000, thanks to main sponsor Fidelity Life. Sponsorship for the event was generously given by the New Zealand owned insurance company, Fidelity Life, and they were delighted by the response of the golfing community in turning out in such high numbers for their event. No doubt, lots of the players will be considering moving their business to Fidelity Life when their current insurance premiums expire; given the generous support the company have brought to the region. The company are already talking about continued sponsorship for next year so let’s hope that they get the support from the players in return. After the recent Festival of Golf, the course was in fantastic condition thanks to all the hard work from course superintendent Bendon O’Hara and his team. The new links layout at the Nelson Golf Club was a true test in the strong afternoon wind, this is reflected in the results below. The overall winner of the Fidelity Life Open Cup was local junior Josh Simpson from the Nelson Golf Club who scored a very creditable 40 points.
