hicago-area golf dates back to 1893, when an investor group dropped $300 for a nine-hole facility in suburban Downers Grove. Today, Chicago and the surrounding area is a golf destination, offering some of the world’s best courses. From posh private courses such as Chicago Golf Club or Medinah, to world-renowned public courses such as Cog Hill or Kemper Lakes, the Windy City has a course for every player. The tough part is picking which to play first. Use this edition of Chicagoland Golfer’s Guide as your roadmap. Inside you will find news and information on all of the top facilities in the area. Our cover story is on Medinah Country Club, which has been selected to host the first-ever Ryder Cup event in Illinois. To get ready for the biennial competition between Europe and the United States, the exclusive club underwent $1.5 million in renovations, including a dramatic redesign of the 15th hole. Read all about it, starting on Page 6. Are you a golf purist? If so, be sure to check our feature on Fox Bend Golf Course, starting on Page 16. You can revive that old time feeling at Fox Bend, a course that is fair, affordable and formidable. Looking for something unique? Look no further than the Golf Club of Illinois, featured on Page 22. The course was one of the most difficult in the state when it hosted the Illinois Open Championships back in the 1990s. The course has been dialed down some but still offers one heck of a challenge. The massive 11th hole measures 678 yards from the tips and plays as a par 5. Other featured courses include Klein Creek, Bridges of Poplar Creek, Seven Bridges, Bolingbrook, Stonewall Orchard, Oak Grove and many more along with a directory and several maps. Also be sure to check out our special events section, starting on Page 37. Medinah Country Club brings 1st

RYDER CUP To Illinois

S

toried Medinah Country Club is the Chicago area’s best-known and most frequent major championship venue. The private club features three courses but is widely known for Course No. 3, site of three U.S. Opens and two PGA Championships. Add the 2012 Ryder Cup to the list. The PGA of America announced in October of 1998 that Medinah would host the biennial competition between teams from Europe and the United States. The event was set for Sept. 25-30, marking the Illinois debut of golf’s most compelling event. Players receive no prize money despite millions of dollars in TV and sponsorship revenue. A victory is their only reward. The Ryder Cup format is also unique. Team USA and Team Europe compete in 28 matches over a three-day span, includ-

ing eight foursome matches, eight fourball matches and 12 singles matches. To get ready for the world’s best, Medinah underwent $1.5 million in renovations, including a dramatic redesign of the 15th hole. Golf course architect Rees Jones transformed the 392-yard hole into a drivable par 4, reducing its length by 100 yards while adding a new two-acre lake on the right side of the fairway and green. It is now the shortest par 4 on the course and comes at a crucial point in the round, following the long par 5 on hole 14 and before the famous closing three-hole stretch. By moving the 15th green to the left, Jones also made room for a new back tee for the famous par 4 16th hole. The tree-lined dogleg left has been extended to 482 yards. The 17th hole was returned to the edge

P of Lake Kadijan in order to bring water back into play. The 18th hole also had significant changes. The left fairway bunker was replaced with a larger set of bunkers on the right side of a new contoured fairway. The green was elevated and a collection area was added. The final holes of Course No. 3 have been the scene of several dramatic shots and putts in major championships. The most famous moment came in the final round of the 1999 PGA Championship. Sergio Garcia, 19 at the time, seemed to knock himself out contention on the 16th fairway when his drive sailed right, resting on the roots of a big oak tree, partially blocking his view of the green. Garcia (and the tree) earned a spot in golf history with a memorable shot followed by a memorable celebration. 2012 ISSUE 2

006-007 Ryder.indd 7

Instead of taking relief and a penalty stroke, Garcia closed his eyes and took a big swing. After contact, he raced up the fairway to see where it landed, jumping in excitement when he spotted it on the left side of the putting surface. Tiger Woods held off Garcia’s charge and went on to win the tournament by one stroke, foreshadowing his “Tiger Slam” in 2000. Woods returned to Medinah in 2006 and won the PGA Championship by five strokes, becoming the first golfer to win the event twice on the same course. In recognition of the achievement, Woods was made a member of the club, an unprecedented decision by Medinah’s membership. In 2010 Medinah’s No. 3 Course was ranked No. 20 by Golf Digest among “America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.”

lein Creek Golf Club, a member of The Royal Country Clubs’ family of fine area clubs and courses, is an 18-hole “must play” masterpiece conveniently located in suburban DuPage County, just south of Route 64 and east of County Farm Road. Klein Creek – offering daily-fee access -- features contrasting gentle doglegs bounded by forest with strategically bunkered fairways and greens, wild prairie grasses and more than 30 acres of man-made lakes. Klein Creek has been repeatedly recognized as one of the area’s best-maintained courses, and Golf Digest’s Places to Play has awarded the course its 4-Star rating. The signature ninth hole – a 453-yard par-4 with water and OB on the right, a fairway bunker on the left and a well-protected green – predominantly plays into the wind and has been rated as the most challenging No. 9 in Chicagoland. Klein Creek is the perfect setting for your next outing, fundraiser, wedding or other social occasion, with a banquet facility that seats 250 comfortably. PGA professionals staff an award-winning golf shop and are available for lessons. Seasonal memberships and permanent tee times are also available.

Revive That Old Time Feeling at Fox Bend

O

swego’s Fox Bend Golf Course is a layout that purists will enjoy playing. The 6,890-yard, par-72 is a traditional test of shot-making ability decorated with mature trees, plush fairways and receptive greens. Owned and operated by the Oswegoland Park District, Fox Bend is fair, affordable and formidable. The layout contains 34 bunkers and water comes into play on 11 holes. A canopy of 100-year-old oaks and willows tower overhead like relics of a different era as you traverse the landscape. “It’s picturesque,” said General Manager Brad Doyle. “On quite a few courses the trees aren’t mature, and that isn’t the case here. At Fox Bend, when you finish the round, you’ll remember the holes you play.” A brisk pace of play allows the golfer to develop a rhythm at Fox Bend – a luxury many courses don’t afford. “It’s a very nice course, in great shape with an interesting variety of holes,” commented a golfer who recently tackled the municipal 16

016-017 Fox Bend Edit.indd 16

track. “It’s not in a housing development, which is a plus. This is really just a wellmanaged course. Expected pace of play is four hours or less, and they keep people on track.” The course has welcomed a number of distinguished tournaments - three Illinois Opens, the Illinois PGA Championship, Western Open qualifying and a 2010 USGA Junior-Am qualifi er. Fox Bend has aged like a world-class wine, growing as a course and as part of the community since its debut in 1967. The golf course was a groundbreaking project built by Brent Wadsworth, owner of the Wadsworth Construction Company. He used the course as an outdoor showroom for his golf course construction business. Oswegoland Park District and neighboring Fox Valley Park District residents enjoy resident rates and all golfers enjoy reasonable daily rates at one of the western suburbs premier golf courses. ome play the course critics are still raving about as it matures into its 10th season. The Village of Bolingbrook has turned some former farmland into one of the top municipal golf courses in the country and one of the best places in all of Chicagoland to golf, dine, entertain and host large events and parties. The Arthur Hills design can play from just under 5,000 yards to more than 7,100 with five sets of tees. The linksstyle layout features seven lakes that come into play on 14 of the 18 holes including the picturesque island-greened 15th, an over-the-water carry of 67 to 156 yards. Three of the four par 5s play into the prevailing wind and the fourth measures up to 600 yards from the tips. The Bolingbrook Golf Academy includes a dozen target greens, a huge short-game area with multiple chipping greens and bunkers, an enormous putting green and even two complete practice holes, all lighted for nighttime use. Formal and informal dining and events of all sizes are possible in the 76,000-square-foot clubhouse.

ure golf, in a magnificent natural landscape unsullied by development. That’s what you’ll experience at Oak Grove Golf Course in McHenry County. Oak Grove is among an elite handful of Illinois golf courses ranked 4½ stars by Golf Digest. This championship 18 nestled in gorgeous, rural countryside features some of the finest public greens in Chicagoland and private-club conditioning. Vibrant wetlands, mature oak savannas and generous fairways all contribute to Oak Grove’s unique ambiance. Swing away at the practice facility and following your round, “The Lodge” clubhouse serves up delicious bar-and-grill fare. Best of all, Oak Grove’s exceptional golf experience is accessible and affordable. “Our customers rave and are astounded we’re not packed, but we’re off the beaten path,” notes GM Tim Miles, Jr. With five tee placements per hole, the course is enjoyable for all levels, yet the CDGA ranks it among its toughest public tracks. Oak Grove’s exclusive private setting and spacious clubhouse make it an ideal venue for corporate and other large outings. A manageable drive from most of Chicagoland, Oak Grove is also just 15 minutes south of Lake Geneva.

Golf Club of Illinois

Dialed Down, but Still One Heck of a Challenge

I

n 1990 Gary Pinns battled the blustery winds and snarling fescue at the Golf Club of Illinois to win the last of his five Illinois Open championships. A testament to the severity of the 7,041-yard par-71 course, Pinns, who is now one of America’s top teaching professionals, was the only man in the field to defeat par. The public links-style layout was softened in the decade after the ’90 Illinois Open, as hazards were removed from fairways and native grasses were trimmed to manageable heights. There are five tee positions in place at the course, saving beginners and high handicaps from having to tackle the course at full strength. General manager Rob Lemke said the course is especially popular with senior players – proof that while the Golf Club of Illinois can be a brute at times, it’s eminently playable for all ages and skill levels. The Golf Club of Illinois was composed by popular Chicagoland architect Dick Nugent, and then partner Bruce Borland. Borland went on to build signature

courses for Jack Nicklaus Design from his hometown of Peoria to Indonesia, but met a very untimely and tragic end aboard the Learjet he shared with Payne Stewart and four others bound for the Tour Championship in Dallas in 1999. Although the design has been slightly altered since it debuted in 1987, its distinguishing characteristics still remain. Generous fairways, fescue rough, which tickles your knee caps in some spots, devilish sand bunkers and gentle mounding will be experienced from start to finish. One thing you won’t find at Golf Club Illinois is a tree. In true links fashion, the course is barren and completely at the mercy of gusting winds. As you make your way around the course, the wind will oscillate, blowing in your face and against your back. The greens are on the small side, and can be very quick and challenging, with substantial undulation in certain places. “This links-style course can be pretty brutal for the high-handicapper, especially

enge

on a windy day,” said one golfer who recently tried his luck at GCI. “I’d avoid playing from the tips unless you’re a lowhandicapper or a real glutton for punishment. “But I guess as dedicated golfers, we’re all gluttons for punishment.” The most memorable, and most anticipated, hole at the Golf Club of Illinois is the massive 11th, which measures 678 yards from the tips and plays as a par-5. At the time it was constructed, this beast was the longest par-5 in the United States. It’s since been surpassed at a number of facilities. The longest par 5 recognized by the United States Golf Association is a 725-yard hole in Marana, Arizona. The par-5 11th known as “Grant’s March” is only four yards shy of being eligible for par-6 status. The USGA guidelines are such that any hole 691 yards and longer from the back tees and 591 and longer from the ladies’ tees can be considered a par-6.

Part signature hole, part tourist attraction, the 11th plays slightly uphill, with out of bounds lurking down the entire right side. Fescue-covered mounds border the fairway to the left. Two wellstruck shots will leave you a short-to 2012 ISSUE 2

mid-iron from the green, but be careful of two bunkers that pinch the landing area at 160 yards out. Par is an achievable score here, but beware doubles and triples. Golf Club of Illinois has been impressing with its terrific conditioning as of late. The course brought in a new superintendent in 2006, and all greenside bunkers were overhauled at that time. The clubhouse was recently remodeled and contains a fully stocked pro shop with the latest styles and equipment, a banquet

room that can accommodate 225 guests and a 19th hole that serves drinks and casual fare. Men’s and women’s locker rooms can also be found in the clubhouse. A practice facility is available for warm-up or post-round practice and features grass and matted tees, target greens and hills and a putting green. pened in 1968, Plum Tree National Golf Club is a classic course with a sterling reputation for championship tradition and a storied history. Through the years, Plum Tree has welcomed many a talented golfer to its greener pastures. The Joe Lee-designed course has hosted U.S. Open sectional qualifying and various Illinois PGA events. The 18-hole course is quietly nestled into 200 acres in the unspoiled rolling woodlands of rural McHenry County. This picturesque natural setting provides 18 distinctive and formidable holes of golf that can challenge the best while not beating up the rest. Plum Tree’s reputation is for fair and affordable golf. The back nine at Plum Tree is a special experience…one where the golfer can really get away from it all and remember when he/she fell in love with the game for the first time. Plum Tree also offers a full-service pro shop, a large practice area with real grass tees, locker rooms, an outdoor patio and banquet facilities. The course is a “must play” in the Chicagoland area.

uilt on a 170-acre tract of rolling farmland in western Kane County, Hughes Creek Golf Club is an Illinois golf destination that gets better each year. A truly peaceful setting with a sympathetic relationship with nature, Hughes Creek contains gentle rolling hills, wetlands, native plants, flowers and beautiful song birds. The panoramic view of the course from the clubhouse is unforgettable. But don’t be hypnotized by the beauty of the layout. Designed by Gordon Cunningham, Hughes Creek forces a player to utilize every club in the bag to navigate its rolling topography. The course also requires accurate iron play into its greens, and once you’re reached the putting surface, you’ll need to putt with precision to score well. Secluded and a long way from city streets, it’s just you, a few Redwing Blackbirds, American Goldfinches and the golf course at Hughes Creek. oodridge’s stunning Seven Bridges Golf Club is one of the premier golf courses in the Chicagoland region, and one of the most challenging. Players who perform well here will walk away with a great sense of accomplishment, a newfound belief in their on-course abilities and memories that will last forever. Planning an outing or special event, especially one that commemorates or celebrates one of life’s many milestones, can be as challenging as a round of golf on a championship course. It can also be tremendously rewarding when every detail is done just right. From charity golf outings to beautiful wedding ceremonies, Seven Bridges has the facilities and expertise to deliver a first-class event from start to finish. For more intimate events, consecutive tee time packages can be booked. This option is perfect for bachelor parties and business meetings. The team at Seven Bridges is dedicated to delivering a positive experience for everyone taking part in your event. This effort includes meticulous planning and a warm greeting as your group arrives. “Our team takes a very customized approach, and we like to feel like we’re part of the event committee,” said Seven Bridges Director of Golf Ben Nachtwey. “We participate in meetings, help with decision-making and work on sponsor signs. We’ve really become involved in every stage of the planning process. You’ll have one dedicated person involved in everything. Our customers don’t have to deal with a separate person for golf and food and beverage.” All golf outing packages include 18 holes of championship golf and riding carts equipped with GPS systems. To schedule an event at Seven Bridges today call Geoff Clam at (630) 964-7777 ext. 243 or send a quick email message to geoffclam@sevenbridges.com. Reinvent Yourself at Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club

C

areer and personal milestones can transform an individual forever. A single meeting can be the beginning of a fulfilling life in a leadership position. A hole-inone during a golf outing could give you bragging rights for life. A family reunion can change the course of a relationship. Weddings mark the beginning of a lifelong union, as two once independent lives become linked for all time. These transformative moments should be magical. At the Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club, where a multi million dollar enhancement to the golf course and clubhouse recently re-wrote the club’s own history, organizing a special event that meets the significance of the moment is an unwavering commitment. All of the changes that have taken place in the past few months at Bridges of Poplar Creek were in an effort to better equip the

facility to host daily-fee golfers and guests of golf tournaments, banquets, business meetings and weddings. Modernization was achieved on many levels in regard to the 18-hole championship golf course. Water features were manipulated to improve the look, feel and challenge, and drainage was improved. Plaques paying tribute to golf legends were installed throughout the course. Playability will be the focal point of any golf outing at Bridges of Poplar Creek. Aesthetics were enhanced throughout the property, as eight timber bridges were installed to replace steel bridges to give the layout extra pop and appeal. The 18-hole championship course is now an even more pristine backdrop for your special day. Facilities available at the Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club include a revamped clubhouse that contains a main banquet

room. This main meeting hall also received a facelift during the overall renovation effort. A new 8,200-square-foot wedding pavilion complements the clubhouse. This space is designed for outdoor ceremonies. Why Choose Bridges of Poplar Creek? A good indicator of success in the golf outing business is frequency of repeat visitors. On average, Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club hosts 90 outings per calendar year. Eighty percent of those groups are repeat clients. Here are a few reasons why groups choose to bring their business back to Poplar Creek: • Flexibility to personally assist groups with not only their needs but those of their vendors and additional sponsors • Organization skills possessed by the Bridges of Poplar Creek staff contribute to the uniqueness and memorability of the event • A challenging but fair golf course that tests the golfers skills but doesn’t overwhelm them and create a slow and difficult day

Banquets, Weddings and Special Events Enjoy Bridges of Poplar Creek’s beautiful, upscale banquet facilities overlooking the recently renovated 18-hole championship golf course. Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club can custom design a package that meets your wishes and your budget. You’ll experience a country club atmosphere at an affordable price. Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club can accommodate 25 – 300 guests and specializes in – wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners, bridal showers, religious celebrations, awards banquets, golf outings, ethnic catering, corporate meetings and events. For more information, call (847) 7813658 or visit www.bridgesofpoplarcreek. com. As a municipal facility, Bridges of Poplar Creek Country Club takes a family approach to golf and social activities.

T

o find the best public-access example of Pete Dye’s legendary work in the Circle City, travel just a few minutes northeast of downtown Indianapolis to the Fort Golf Course in Fort Harrison State Park. The Fort showcases the best of what Indiana golf has to offer. At 7,148 yards playing to a par 72 over nearly 240 acres, this layout meanders through trees, valleys and wetlands in order to create an experience that allows the golfer to enjoy nature and the game all at once. Originally opened In 1906, and named in honor of our 23rd President, Benjamin Harrison, Fort Ben served multiple roles during major military conflicts from WW1 to Desert Storm. A few years after the post closed following the Cold War, the land was purchased in the mid 1990’s

56

by the state of Indiana, which turned to Pete Dye to redesign the golf course. Reinvented by Dye, with help from protégé Tim Liddy, and ready to entertain golfers of all ability levels, the new Fort Golf Course opened in the fall of 2007. Since the opening The Fort has consistently ranked amongst the best courses in the state of Indiana and is currently rated the No. 1 public course by Golf.com. In 2011, Golfweek’s “Best Courses you can play” category ranked The Fort Golf Course third in the entire state. It’s an impossible chore to select just one signature hole at The Fort. Nos. 4, 5, 6, 11 and 18 are all worthy of that distinction. Each of these Dye creations shares a few common traits: thick woodlands and elevation changes, which demands a precise tee shot. Each hole then concludes on quick greens requiring a skillful sense of finesse. The Fort has become a popular “Stay and Play” facility, due to the variety of lodging options available. he Brassie Golf Club is an 18-hole championship facility bearing an authentic British Isles flavor and boasting some of the best greens in the area. Considered by many to be one of the best golf experiences in northwest Indiana, The Brassie also promises exceptional value. Designed by architect Jim Fazio, the course opened in 1998 to rave reviews. Featuring gently rolling terrain, strategic bunkering and distinctive fescue areas, The Brassie has that classic links “feel.” It stretches from 7,008 yards at the tips (rating 74.3, slope 137) but plays down to 5,493 yards from the forward tees (rating 72.0, slope 126), providing a challenge for all skill levels. In addition to a meticulously conditioned golf course, The Brassie – operated since summer 2011 by GolfVisions – offers friendly service, a fully stocked golf shop, complete practice facilities, and a 19th hole serving up great golf comfort food and beautiful views of the course from the shady patio overlooking 18 green.

WeaverRidge Golf Club

One of the Best in Illinois for a Reason Aesthetics. Conditioning. Playability. Affordability. Ranking. Measured by any metric, Peoria’s WeaverRidge Golf Club is one of the best places to play golf in Illinois. Built on 300 up-and-down acres on the former site of Weaver Angus Farms, the 7,030-yard championship course was designed by the team of Dr. Mike Hurdzan and Dana Fry. The Hurdzan-Fry firm, based in Columbus, Ohio, is responsible for a number of wellreceived layouts scattered throughout the Midwest, including Wisconsin’s Erin Hills, host of the 2017 U.S. Open. “WeaverRidge is one of the finest sites we have ever worked on with much of the golf course nestled between deep ravines and picturesque valleys above the scenic Illinois River in an area carved by glaciers,” reads the design group’s summation of the course. 70

070-071 Weaver Ridge Edit.indd 70

Two hours south of Chicago traveling on Interstate 55, Peoria long ago emerged as a reliable barometer of mainstream American attitude. “Will it play in Peoria?” is a well-known slogan about gauging whether particular persons, products or promotional themes will resonate with an audience that’s been selected to represent our nation’s middle. How is the premier course in one of the country’s finest mid-sized cities playing to the golf course rankings crowd? Quite well, thank you. In 2009, readers of the trusted Zagat golf guide pegged WeaverRidge as the top public course in Illinois. Golfweek’s 2010 “Best Courses You Can Play” state-by-state rankings listed WeaverRidge at No. 4, just behind usual suspects like Cog Hill’s Dubsdread. Among

public, private and resort courses in the state rated by Golf Digest, WeaverRidge slid into the top 20. On Golf Magazine’s national list of the top public-access golf courses, WeaverRidge ranked No. 89. WeaverRidge has received national acclaim since it was first introduced to golfers in Central Illinois in 1998. That year, Golf Digest positioned the Hurdzan-Fry layout second on its docket of “Best New Upscale Public Courses.” The winner that year, by a microscopic margin of 0.04 points, was Pete Dye’s Bulle Rock Golf Club in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Bulle Rock has since hosted multiple LPGA Championships. WeaverRidge is an enticing blend of beautiful scenery and substance. The layout itself is outstanding – a traditional course speckled with nearly 100 sand bunkers where the terrain retreats and rises as much as 12 stories. On the 228-yard 12th hole, a spectacular par 3, your golf ball plummets more than 120 feet tee to green. Perched high above the eventual landing area, you’ll marvel at this picturesque hole. To complete the setting, the green is encircled by forest, and when autumn has turned the leaves hues of red, orange and yellow, this is really a magnificent site. The finale at WeaverRidge is another spectacle to behold. At a length of 556 yards from the tips, the par-5 18th descends almost 80 feet from tee to green, crossing a creek at the 290-yard mark. Your round wraps on a behemoth of a green; it’s nearly 120 feet deep. Onlookers from the porch of the facility’s clubhouse have a fantastic vantage point 70 feet above the putting surface. Overall, the nines nicely complement each other, though each has its own defining elements. The beauty of indigenous prairie grasses and flowers accents the 2012 ISSUE 2

front nine, while the back nine offers some wonderful views of the area. There are homes at WeaverRidge as Crain’s Chicago Business pointed out in an article filed in June of 2010, but they’re not eyesores by any stretch and they don’t negatively influence play. “Few of the state’s top courses are surrounded by homes,” the article started. “WeaverRidge is, with more than 300 upscale Georgian- and Tudor-style homes sprinkled along some fairways, though the residences are back far enough from the landing areas to present minimal bother. Some of the million-dollar edifices make the walk seem like a stroll through Architectural Digest.” In every facet, WeaverRidge embodies what the spirit of American golf should be. The course is family owned and operated, serves the community (local high schools practice here), doesn’t cost an exorbitant amount to play, ranks high among actual golfers and offers a spacious, relaxing setting. WeaverRidge also features top-notch practice facilities, and is capable of hosting weddings, banquets or outings. For more information, or to book a tee time today, visit www.weaverridge.com.
