Happy Birthday to LuLu, Sam, Ben and Byron than a farm. Pinehurst architect Donald Ross was brought in and the Lulu Temple Country Club was opened in 1912. LuLu was the first Ross design in Pennsylvania. In the years that followed, 16 more Ross courses would be built in the state. LuLu is nearly the same today as it was 100 years ago. At 6,433 yards with a par of 71, the course is still a good test of golf for all skill levels. LuLu was an early member of the Golf Association of Philadelphia, and hosts GAP events on a regular basis. Over the past two decades, the Donald Ross Invitational was played at LuLu, with some of the region’s top amateurs in the field. The course is known for its excellent conditions with fast and undulating greens. A recent course refurbishment has restored many features and bunkers lost over time. LuLu remains a private club as before, but has opened its doors this year LuLu Country Club to all golfers with its “Member Fore A Day” program. A LuLu membership also now includes reciprocal memberships at 40 clubs nationally and five clubs locally. The club is also a popular site for weddings, golf outings and business meetings. LuLu continues to remain a course of charm, character and
Many historic events took place in 1912. There was the grand opening of baseball’s Fenway Park and the beginning of the Girl Scouts of America. At 2:20 a.m. on April 15, 1912, the unsinkable luxury liner Titanic hit an iceberg in the North Atlantic and promptly sank. More bad news for the world came that same day when future dictator Kim II Sung was born in North Korea. There was plenty of good golf news in 1912 though as some of the game’s greatest players and classic courses were born. In the early part of the 20th century, Shriners from the LuLu Temple and LuLu Automobile Club would meet at George S. Cox’s farm on Limekiln Pike for picnics and dinners. They also played baseball and horseshoes. One day, someone brought a golf club to the farm. Soon after, the Shriners decided that a golf course would be better

THE INN AT POCONO MANOR In 1902 the beautiful Inn at Pocono Manor was built with guests enjoying a variety of activities, both indoor and out, spread over the 3,000-acre property. Originally designed by noted architect Alex Findlay, Galen Hall’s course is famous for the first-ever island green, the No. 15 “Moat Hole” par 3, designed by the legendary A.W. Tillinghast. The course is also known for its elevation changes and undulating greens, making it a unique and challenging experience for all golfers. Galen Hall’s famous hotel was a regular host of Hollywood’s elite, going back to silent movie stars Mary Pickford and Fatty Arbuckle, gangster Al Capone and later Fred Astaire, Milton Berle and Frank Sinatra. A tragic fire destroyed the hotel in 1963 but the golf course and club still thrive today, with rooms available, a full service restaurant and the new grillhouse and pub. I played there recently and conditions are excellent. The greens are as smooth as ever. Plymouth has a strong golf tradition, with only two PGA professionals over the past 65 years. “The Wizard” Peter DeAngeles held the top pro post from 1947-1993. Current head pro Chris Hanson is now in his 19th year. Plymouth amateur stars Philip Corson and Spenser Jones won three GAP Amateur titles from 1926-29. Their best current women’s player, Terry Harbaugh, won the women’s PA Senior Amateur title in 2007. Among the special events scheduled for 2012, Plymouth will play host to the GAP Father-Son tournament in late June and the Flynn Cup in October. PLYMOUTH COUNTRY CLUB I played one of my very first junior golf tournaments at Plymouth Country Club. I enjoyed playing that day and enjoy it just as much now. Plymouth celebrates its 100th anniversary this year with its classic William Flynn-designed course holding up to today’s best golfers.
MERION GOLF CLUB One final course that must be mentioned for its 100th anniversary this year is the magnificent East course at Merion Golf Club, designed by Hugh Wilson. Merion has hosted 17 USGA events, more than any other course. Bobby Jones won the U.S. Amateur

and the Grand Slam at Merion in 1930. Ben Hogan won the Open in 1950 in memorable fashion. There was Lee Trevino’s playoff win over Jack Nicklaus in 1971. Next up is the 2013 U.S. Open at Merion. The course has a storied history with much more to come. THE SLAMMER, BANTAM BEN, LORD BYRON Three of the greatest legends in the game of golf were all born in 1912: Slammin’ Sam Snead, The Hawk Ben Hogan and Lord Byron Nelson. They battled against each for more than 25 years, creating a rivalry matched only by the Big Three: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player. Nelson and Hogan grew up together in Texas and caddied at the same club, often competing against each other as teenagers.
• Nelson was a true gentleman of the game. He was kind to all but tough to beat on the course. He’s most remembered for his streak of 11 consecutive wins in 1945, a record probably never to be broken, comparable to Joe DiMaggio’s 56-game hitting streak. Nelson is remembered locally, too, winning the 1937 U.S. Open at Philadelphia Country Club’s Spring Mill course. He won a playoff after Snead made an 8 on the 72nd hole. • Hogan was maybe the toughest competitor in golf history, with a practice routine unmatched. He would pound ball after ball, fine-tuning his swing to the sharpest edge. I remember Hogan at the old IVB Philadelphia Golf Classic continued on page 26

I watched him on the practice range as the sun went down, hitting ball after ball to his caddie, who never moved an inch as Hogan hit 40 straight 5-irons within a yard of him. Hogan was nearly killed in an automobile crash in 1949 but came back to beat the odds at the 1950 U.S. Open at Merion, hitting his famous 1-iron shot on No. 18 to make a par and get into a playoff, which he won the next day. With all his injuries, Hogan won most of his majors after the accident. He almost won the 1960 Open at Cherry Hills, nipped by Arnie’s famous 65 on the final day. Hogan, the Hawk, is the toughest of them all. • My memories of Snead are numerous. I was lucky to see him close up many times growing up. My parents started going to The Greenbriar Resort in 1948, Snead’s home course for 50 years. Dad was one of Snead’s regular pigeons, losing nearly every match they played, but he never minded. Snead was his idol, and mine, too. I remember dad coming home from a trip to White Sulphur Springs, recalling a match with Snead. It came down to the 18th hole par 3 on the Old White course. Dad hit his best 7-iron to 10 feet. My mother, a 4 handicap, hit her shot to three feet. Snead followed that up by picking up his 8-iron and knocking in an ace. He autographed the ball and gave it to my dad. I still have it to this day. Snead is famous for so many things. He won 84 PGA events, another 80 worldwide, was the oldest to win a tour 26

LuLu Country Club event at the age of 52 and shot his age almost every time out from age 70 until his death at age 88. He was infamous for never winning the U.S. Open. That 1937 Open loss to Nelson at Philly CC gnawed at him until the day he died. Snead was known for his flexibility. He was triple-jointed and could kick the top of the door jam even into his 80’s. He was also known as somewhat of a ladies man. I remember him on the practice range at The Greenbriar, watching an attractive, rather well-endowed young lady hitting balls. Snead approached her and inquired in his West Virginia accent, “Do you swing over ‘em or under ‘em?” He loved to tell off-color jokes at any occasion. But it will be Snead’s classic golf swing that will remain his signature, the best of all time. Just ask the Big Three, they’ll tell you. Happy 100th birthday boys.
