I

can’t take all the credit for this excellent golf year, but I did predict that 2012 would be a much better year for golfers and golf course owners. This year’s mild winter led to a very mild spring. Just the right amount of rain when needed brought about excellent course conditions from the Jersey shore to Northeast Maryland. It’s been just a tad hot this summer, but hey, no one’s perfect. The cooler winds of autumn are just around the corner, so get ready for my favorite time of the year, and lots of fall golf. Our featured course this fall is the 5-star rated Bulle Rock Golf Club, the No. 1 ranked public golf course in Maryland. If you’ve yet to play at Bulle, do yourself a favor and get down there this fall, when the conditions will be near perfect as the weather cools. Noted architect Pete Dye designed a masterpiece, so good, it was home to the LPGA Championship for many years. The clubhouse is beautiful and you won’t want to miss out on Bulle’s delicious Chesapeake seafood specials. Bulle Rock continues to be “Better than Ever.” My Rose Factor editorial gives you an early preview of next year’s US Open at Merion. The Hugh Wilson-designed classic course has been host to many USGA events, with golf’s greatest players rising to the challenge. Bobby Jones, Ben Hogan and Lee Trevino are among the greats who have conquered Merion’s East course. Relive some history and get ready for the 2013 US Open at Merion. And yes, Mike Rose’s golf reports are still going strong this fall, on 975 The Fanatic, your station for golf in the Del Valley. We go till the FED EX Cup is awarded, and the Ryder Cup matches conclude. Tune in for the latest golf news and our golf contests on www.975thefanatic.com. It’s been a great year so far, keep it going through the end of the year and into 2013. Don’t forget to check out www.rosefactor.com for 30 to 50 percent off on greens fees at great area courses. Keep in touch and I hope to see you on the tour. Mike Rose

The Rose Factor By Mike Rose (with lots of help from Merion historian John Capers III)

Merion to host the 2013 U.S. Open It had been discussed, rehashed, and checked out in every way. Could Merion’s East course, and its infrastructure, be able to again host a United States Open? The course wasn’t long enough for today’s equipment and long-hitting pros. Only 120 acres, the course didn’t have enough room to hold the normal 35-45,000 everyday attendees. Where would the hospitality tents go, would there be space for all the world’s golf media? Parking is almost non-existent and the driving range is certainly inadequate. It took a lot of work and lots of effort on the part of Merion, its members, and the USGA, but the problems have been solved and the 2013 U.S. Open will be held at Merion’s fabled East course. The course, previously 6544 yards when Merion hosted its last Open in 1981, will now play near 6995 yards, slightly longer than when the course was tested for its merit in 2005 for the US Amateur, where only a few players shot 1-under par in the qualifier. No change in the Merion acreage, so galleries will be limited to only 25-30,000 spectators each day, a slight blow to the USGA’s pocketbook. Merion’s West course will act as the driving range, locker room and eating lounge for the pros. Space is also there for the media tent. Spectators will be bused in from various 22

locales within a few miles of the club. It’s not a perfect scenario, but to have Merion as the Open venue, it’s well worth all the slight inconveniences. Merion’s history goes back to the 19th century, but the East course planning started in 1910, when Merion member and lifelong golfer Hugh Wilson was sent to England and Scotland, to survey the great British courses in preparation for a new Merion course. Wilson returned to Merion after seven months, with sketches and notes for this new course, which was completed in 1912, and but for a few bunkers and slight changes on the last four holes, remains the same today as it was when it opened. Noted architect William Flynn (Shinnocock Hills, Cherry Hills) was Merion’s first superintendent and worked closely with Wilson. It’s said that Flynn was probably responsible for the wicker baskets that adorn the top of Merion’s flagsticks. Those baskets remain on the flagsticks today, the only time they were not used was at the 1950 Open. The 1916 U.S. Amateur was Merion’s first USGA event, and also the USGA debut for 14-year-old Bobby Jones, who won two matches before he was eliminated. But Jones returned in 1924 for Merion’s second Amateur, and came away with his first am win, a 9 and 8 trouncing

firing a near perfect bogey-free 67 in the fi nal round. The U.S. Open of 2013 will certainly be different than the Opens of the past, but probably not in the scoring column. The added increase in course length will be made up by the better technology changes in balls and equipment of today. But even those improvements won’t help the pros if they drive the ball into Merion’s brutal 4 inch rough, no first cut, thank you. Those Merion fairways will be tightened from a previous 28 yard width, to a mere 22 yards. Green speeds will run at a quick 12+ on the Stimpmeter, and if there are dry conditions, that speed could go up to 14, very nasty, especially with those brutal Open pin positions. Here are some of the course changes to look for. On the par 5 second hole, besides the tighter fairway, a new bunker has been added, just 30 yards

of George Von Elm. Jones returned for one more US Amateur in 1930, where he won his 13th major title, beating Gene Homans 8 and 7 to complete golf’s grand slam. This would be Bobby Jones last competition, a feat that’s marked with a plaque next to the 11th tee at Merion East. Merion East has hosted several Opens since the days of Jones. In 1950, Ben Hogan returned to major competition after a horrifying car crash, surprising the golf world with his amazing win at Merion, highlighted by his famous 1-iron shot at No. 18, where his par got him into a playoff where he defeated Lloyd Mangrum and George Fazio. The 1971 US Open was at Merion and featured a battle between Lee Trevino and Jack Nicklaus, with Trevino defeating Jack by three shots in a playoff. Merion last hosted the Open in 1981, with David Graham winning the title by 3 shots,

The history of Merion Golf Club lives today like no other club in the country. Merion archives include more than 900 books in their library and more than 2,000 historic items. There are more than 7,000 digitized photographs and hard copy, and another 70,000 in digitized documents and hard copy. The club is glad to share its archive program with other clubs. Merion’s history is rich, its East course with a tradition unmatched. The “new” Merion was tested in the 2005 U.S. Amateur and the 2009 Walker Cup and came up big. In June of 2013, the world’s best golfers will see how they will fare. I’m looking forward to it almost as much as Merion members. The ROSE FACTOR will be playing at Merion before the spring issue of GOLFER’S GUIDE and will give you a hole-by-hole recap, so you’ll see what the pros see as the U.S. Open comes to Merion East next spring. It will surely be the golf event of the year.

in front of the green, so those trying to reach this hole in two may have to think twice. Hole #3, normally 195 yards from the tips, has been lengthened, and will play from 230-265 yards. The par 5 4th hole has also been lengthened to over 600 yards, probably not reachable now even for the likes of Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson. On the short 8th hole, formerly where there was fairway on the right side, now there’s high fescue grass, very nasty, probably an iron off the tee. On #14, the tee has been set way back onto the practice putting green, next to Golf Club Road, making the tee shot extremely difficult. On the quarry hole #16, another fairway bunker has been added, again forcing players to lay up their drives. And on the tough 500 yard par 4 #18, players must hit a very long and straight drive to find the fairway, if not, the long rough will make par very difficult, bringing double bogey into play.

GOLFER’S GUIDE NEWS

Local Golf News from around the Delaware Valley ■ Players of the Year (POY) There’s still two months left to the golf award season but here’s an idea of who the winners might be when all events are played. The Junior season is all but done as school is about to begin. The Golf Association of Philadelphia’s Junior POY looks to be Cole Berman of the Philadelphia Cricket Club, the Harry Hammond Award winner, narrowly beating Evan Thornton of Berkshire. Honorable mention goes to

2012 Issue 3

Junior Boys champion Mariano Medico of Fox Hill and Jalen Griffin of Talamore, who won the Christman Cup in record fashion, shooting 68-65. And special mention goes to Kyle Sterbinsky of Yardley, who qualified for three USGA events, the Junior Am, U.S. Am and the local qualifier for the U.S. Open. The GAP Player of the Year and Hyndman Award winner is still up for grabs, as the U.S. Amateur and U.S. Mid Am are

still to be played. The top five contenders are all under 25, so the U.S. Amateur results should help to clarify things. Brian Colbert is in the lead thanks to his GAP Am win, with GAP Open winner Andrew Mason close behind, both playing at the Amateur at Cherry Hills. Junior stars Brandon Matthews and Ben Smith had outstanding years, Matthews winning the Patterson Cup and Smith beating pros and amateurs in taking the New Jersey Open. Both senior and super senior titles will be determined when the GAP Senior Am takes place in mid-September at Wilmington, and the U.S. Seniors takes place in early October at Mountain Ridge in North Jersey. In the senior division, Tom Bartolacci of Saucon Valley has dominated local events, with his win at the Brewer Cup and second place at the Chapman Cup. But Tom is still a distant second to the world’s No. 1 ranked senior amateur, Chip Lutz of LedgeRock GC. Chip just returned from Wales after successfully defending his British Senior Amateur crown. The week before that, Chip played extremely well at the British Senior Open at Turnberry, where he was 18th going into the final round, thanks to a third-round 67. Locally Chip won the Wm. Hyndman Sr. Inv at HVCC, won the Warner Cup and played well at the Mid Am and GAP Am. In the Super Seniors, “rookie” Mike Rose (The Rose Factor), holds a slim lead over several players, thanks to his win at the Hyndman Super Sr., his Brewer Cup win, second place at the Warner Cup and sixth at the Chapman. Chapman Cup winner Charles Whipple, two-time defending Super Sr. POY Charley McClaskey, and former POY Jay Howson are breathing down my neck. The local PGA pros are having another strong year, with veteran Stu Ingraham of MGOLF in his normal top spot, way ahead in the senior race, and a close second for 2012 ISSUE 3

the overall Haverford Trust PGA POY, just behind Travis Diebert of Commonwealth, and just ahead of Dave Quinn of The Links and Dave McNabb of Applebrook. The Section Championship at White Manor and the Match Play at Little Mill will determine the winners. In local women’s amateur play, congrats go to teenager Alex Liu of Commonwealth National, winner of WGAP’s Amateur title, a great achievement and start to a very promising career. Honorable mention goes to 64 year old Liz Haines of Merion, runner up in the Amateur, as well as winner of the Nonna Barlow, Effie Derr Robey, and member of the winning teams at the intercity Griscom Cup Matches and Merion’s Philadelphia Cup team. But my Women’s Player of the Year is 68 year old Bonnie George of Huntingdon Valley CC, proving again that age is no barrier to great golf. Bonnie shot 72 at the Ida Dixon event at Springhaven, won the Gold Key Inv. at Philmont, qualified for the WGAP Am, and recently shot 74 at French Creek to qualify for the upcoming US Senior Am at Hershey. Most impressive was Bonnie’s performance at the PA Women’s Senior at Allegheny CC. She was the 3-time defending Super Senior champ, but decided to play instead in the 50 and over division this year. Bonnie shot 74 to win the medal prize, then defeated legendary Hall of Famer Carole Semple Thompson in the semi finals, and in the finals, finished with 3 straight birdies, only to lose 1-down to Connie Shorb. Awesome!! Good luck at Hershey, sis. n Down the Shore Congrats go to Ron Jaworski Golf on the acquisition of Blue Heron Pines, the excellent Stephen Kay design in Egg Harbor Township, a great addition to the “Jaws” portfolio of River Winds, Valleybrook and Running Deer.

HOLE-IN-ONE REPORT Lots of great golf shots, lots of interesting stories. Start in May/June with Tommy Hyland, with two aces over a 2 week span, one at the GAP Mid Am, one at the GAP Amateur Championship. Tommy makes them when they count, now has 12 aces overall. More timely holes-in-one. 4 time GAP Junior champ Rob Galbreath, Jr., on his 21st birthday, made an ace during his quarter final match at the GAP Am, but lost on the 22nd hole to his Villanova teammate, and ultimate winner Brian Colbert. A few weeks later, Rob got his 5th overall ace at the Philmont North/South Inv., good for some serious skin money. And at Waynesborough CC, the odds were astronomical, when in a matter of 15 minutes, Rob Lidge and Dick Geroni, both made double eagle 2’s on the par 5, 15th hole. Last but not least, it goes to show you that anyone can make an ace. Harry Mayes, midday sports jock at my favorite sports station 975 FM The Fanatic, found the bottom of the 3rd hole at North Hills. Talk about dumb luck. Here are some other players that relied on skill and guile in making their holes-in-one. The President Country Club

Our Eagle Course is a Robert Trent Jones Jr. Design This Robert Trent Jones Jr. signature design is traditionally-styled with tree-lined fairways. Well-placed bunkers guard the greens, among the mature oaks.

The historically crafted layout features plenty of dogleg holes. For those that can shape their shots, a short approach shot will be left to the greens.
