nother brutal winter has passed, I don’t ever remember so little golf being play in the region, not even in Jersey or Delaware. I’m confident we’ll make up for it this spring and throughout the remainder of the year. Economic conditions hopefully on the rise, keep your fingers crossed and let’s hit the links. Our cover feature this issue is a club entering its second 50 years, the Skippack Golf Club. A beautiful course located in Montgomery County’s scenic Evansburg State Park, Skippack is opening its new Farmhouse Restaurant this spring, making it perfect for lunch, dinner and your next outing. In the GG New Jersey section, you want to check out all the improvements at Ron Jaworski Golf, where he has 3 courses for your pleasure – River Winds, Running Deer and Ron’s usual hangout, Valleybrook GC. In our Delaware section, White Clay Creek CC at Delaware Park is making its reputation with excellence in golf, food, horse racing and gaming. Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman had their “Bucket List” and The Rose Factor has his, just written for your enjoyment, all the golf courses and places I want to visit before hanging up my sticks for good. If only I have enough time. 2011 is a new year, and there’s plenty of local news to report, the who, what, when, where and how to for the Del Valley golfer. Courses open, some now closed, the return of Tiger and the AT&T, the ladies return to Seaview and lots of amateur events for players of all levels. And Golfer’s Guide and The Rose Factor will be all over the media. My golf reports will be back for another year on the region’s best sports radio station, 975 The Fanatic and 950 ESPN. Here me during “Mike and Mike in the Morning” and during the No. 1 rated Mike Missanelli Show. My website, www.rosefactor.com will be a must visit for golfers, with my new and improved blog, and a listing of courses that you can play at 30 to 50 percent off regular rates. You can also sign up for my email blasts or be in touch with me on facebook. So much to do, but always time for golf. See you on the web and on the course. Mike Rose 6

Skippack Golf Club is a peaceful park setting located in Evansburg State Park. The manicured front nine features raised greens that slope from back to front and the back nine ventures through the woods and twists around the Zacharias Creek. Skippack Golf Club at Evansburg Park has been undergoing many changes and 2011 is no different. New this year is The Farm House Restaurant, residing in the completely renovated first floor of a colonial building that been on property since the 1800’s. The Farm House will feature a full menu designed for before and after golf, as well as American contemporary lunch and dinner selections. Paired with the new restaurant is the new expansive outdoor patio, which features a pavilion with an outdoor bar and grille. The patio overlooks the Zacharias Creek and 18th hole. This setting makes for a perfect spot to wind down after a round of golf. These changes continue our goal of yearly improvements. The course conditions are constantly improving, much more than in the past. Skippack is also transformed with the Darryl Lock Golf Academy, seemingly growing by the day, and is also the home of one on Nike Golf’s largest Junior Camps. Skippack has also transformed an existing building into a handsome new Pro Shop and has upgraded the outing and banquet area. Come out to Skippack and see all the changes! But I can argue that “Jaws” is even more passionate about golf. Jaworski Golf now owns and operates three great courses just over the Walt Whitman Bridge in New Jersey. Ron’s goals are to upgrade the course conditions and club amenities, ensuring golfers and guests will always get the most out of their experiences. The results of Jaworski Golf’s efforts are the recent awards given to his properties. Valleybrook Golf Club was rated by local brides, and voted The Knot Best Weddings 2011 pick. Ron’s Running Deer Golf Club recently earned the Wedding Wire’s Bride’s Choice Award for 2011, given for overall professional achievements. M

iddletown Country Club is now in it’s 98th year of tradition in historic Langhorne. Operated by the Agro Golf Corporation, this classic Alex Findlay layout has played a part of our game’s historic past. You will get to walk the same fairways as names like Hogan, Player, Snead, Miller and Fazio. n the tradition of Royal Lytham and St. Anne’s Old Links and other famous seaside courses in the British Isles, Twisted Dune is a first-class links, even though it’s not on the ocean. Laid out through rolling sand dunes and almost devoid of trees, it’s easy to forget that you’re just minutes away from the action in Atlantic City and not tucked away deep in the Scottish Highlands. Twisted Dunes’ challenging layout along with its variable winds, combine to give the player the option of running the ball or flying it into the green.

The Rose Factor

By Mike Rose

My “Bucket List” of Golf Most everyone’s probably seen the Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman movie, “The Bucket List,” where two terminally ill men meet in a hospital, and they put together their all-encompassing wish list, all the things they dreamed of doing but never got the chance. For golfers, a bucket list is easy, all or any of the top 100 in the U.S. or the world, probably an impossible task, save for only the very fortunate few. I’ve been incredibly lucky to play seven of the world’s top 10, 10 of the top 20. I’ve played in Israel with U.S. Open champ Corey Pavin, have played in British Amateur events at Muirfield, Royal Troon, Formby and Woodhall Spa, parred the Road Hole at the home of golf. I’ve played U.S. Am events at Jupiter Hills, Cherry Hills, Bel Aire, Bellrieve and Pinehurst #2, been invited to invitationals at Pine Valley, Oakmont, Merion, Baltosrol, Congressional, The TPC at Sawgrass and magnificent Mid Ocean in Bermuda. You may have a lot of years to pursue your personal bucket list, but time’s running shorter for me. So here’s my top 10 wish list, God willin’ and the crick don’t rise, I’ll get it done. Here’s the plan: #10 – Monterey Peninsula/ San Francisco Easiest to check off my list, since as 34

034-038 Rose Factor.indd 34

I write this, I am just about to leave for San Fran and a family trip with my wife. While she’s hobnobbing with her brother and family for a few days, I’ll have my sticks in hand and enjoy the hospitality of my friends on the left coast, Stu Francis and Gary Shemano. First up will be famed Olympic Golf Club, site of many major championships. Next up, the very exclusive San Francisco Golf Club, a club and course that ranks with the likes of Pine Valley and Seminole. Finally, saving the best for last, onward to the Monterey Peninsula and Cypress Point. I played Pebble Beach in 1992, two weeks before Tom Kite won his Open there, saw the course at its best. Hope the weather holds for Cypress. #9 – Bandon Dunes, Oregon I figured this trip might take a while to check off the list, but a developing story is improving the odds. My daughter Molly is taking time off her senior year at Maryland to take an internship with the U.S. Parks Service and will be working at the Oregon Caves National Park in southwest Oregon, not very far from “you know where.” She’ll need someone to share the driving home, Dad volunteers. I’ll do a few days at Bandon, play the four courses, pick you up after. Sounds like a plan to me.

#8—Augusta National Not much question about it, it’s just taking so long to get there. I’ve been to the Masters three times, it’s great, but I’ve got to play there before I can’t hit it at all. I won’t play it from the new tips but from the tees where Jack, Arnie, Snead and Hogan teed it up. I think I can break 80 from 6,800 yards. My sister’s played there for heaven’s sake, what about me! Bonnie has a friend who’s a member, I’m lobbying heavily. I hope to get the call at any time this spring. #7—The American Club, Kohler, Wisconsin Like most of these dream golf trips, it works best when money is no object. The resort is first class and you play at Black Wolf Run, the Irish course and of course, Whistling Straits. And I can tell you this for sure, if I miss a fairway, I’m going to assume it’s in a “bunker.” #6—Long Island, New York Now I’ve been to Long Island before back in ’99, was fortunate to play at U.S. Open venues Shinnicock Hills and Bethpage. Enjoyed both, struggled at both. But there is another group of courses, out on the Hamptons, classics, both old school and new. I’ve been told I have to play the National Golf Links, Maidstone and Seboneck. If I could just take a helicopter there and avoid all the awful traffic going to and coming from. Don’t you just hate that. #5—The George Thomas Trifecta, Los Angeles If you’ve ever watched the PGA pros at the IVB Classic, or played the George Thomas designed Whitemarsh Valley GC, you might want to join me for this trip 2011 ISSUE 1

034-038 Rose Factor.indd 35

to La-La land to play Thomas’ other classic designs at L.A. Country Club’s North course, scenic Riviera, home of the L.A. Open, and my personal favorite, Bel Aire, home of the stars. The courses are magnificently designed, fair to play for the average golfer, with a history and aura of past generations. Look there’s Hope and Crosby. #4—Scotland, North I’ve been to Scotland three times, loved it every time, even when it rained at Carnoustie and Prestwick. I pared the Road Hole at St. Andrews, missed the British Am cut badly in the high winds at Muirfeld, but made the cut and won a match in my five rounds at Royal Troon. I’ve played almost all the classic names in SE and Western Scotland. But I’ve never been up North and I hear it’s a must see, must play. Work your way up from St. Andrews to Royal Aberdeen, keep going up to Nairn, then maybe the best of them all at Royal Dornoch. If it’s completed in the next year or two, might as well stop in and play Donald Trump’s new course on the North Sea. Did I say money was no object? #3—Australia and New Zealand Wouldn’t this be a trip to remember. First I think it would be so cool just to see both countries, I’ve heard some great things. There’s golf too. Some of my senior buds have been there, played in the Australia and New Zealand Sr. Ams. I actually have some Aussie friends from events we’ve played in Israel, the British Isles and Bermuda. Maybe in the next few years I’ll make it. #2—Ireland, West and South #1—Ireland North I loved my three trips to Scotland and my two visits to England, had great

delvalley.golfersguide.com

35

3/10/11 9:55:16 AM

times, great courses. But everyone tells me that there’s nothing like the people and country of Ireland. I’ve got to get there and maybe this will be the year. It should feel like home for me, after all I was born on March 17, St. Patrick’s Day. To really appreciate the country, I’m told you need to take at least 2-3 weeks, or go several times, there are so many great courses and things to see and do, like visiting Bushmills. My Irish friend Kevin McGrath runs trips all the time and this year, he’s got some beauties. For senior golfers, there’s a 14-day trip, 14 rounds at the best courses all over the country, including two 36 hole tournaments, the Ulster Open and Leinster Open. n. Fun, competition, luxury travel and accommodations, all for under $5,000. 00. New this year is Kevin’s inaugural our Graduation Golf Tour of Southwest Ireland, great for father-sons, youngsters get golf and rooms at 50 percent off. Play great courses at the right price, perfect after school dates of June 18-26. If I can’t make one of these two trips, I may put together my own group, with a goal of playing in the west, and traveling up north to our final destina36

San Fran epilogue Things were looking bleak as we headed to San Francisco, weather forecast was for rain on Thurs/Friday, a chance of snow on Saturday, first snow in 35 years!! Thought the trip wasn’t meant to be, when at Phila. Int Airport, all the long term parking garages were FULL, only SHORT TERM available, at $40 bucks a day!! Lucky to find a spot at concourse A, then had to run to the Southwest terminal E, a long way. On the way, while not looking, I ran into a fire hydrant, ouch!! We did make the plane but could this trip be a “reverse” Rose Factor in the making? Hopped in a cab on Thursday hoping nothing else could go wrong. Brooklyn native Larry the cab driver became my new best friend, talking everything East coast, sports, golf, etc. After driving around Lake Merced twice, we were lost, he had to call in to get directions. The delay turned positive, as the rain stopped, the 1st tee was clear at Lake Merced and I was off. Joined a member and his young protégé who was headed for the Canadian Tour. It turned out that my caddie Steve, had caddied for former Philly Am champ and my friend since high school Art Jacoby. Small world. The lunch at the turn was also great. The luck of the Factor improving. Friday was supposed to be awful, a certain rain out. But the deluge stopped by mid morning and golf was on at San Francisco GC. Had lunch with Stu and his gangsome, all former USGA execs and great golfers. This place is very special, Pine Valley-esque. Hit a few 38

034-038 Rose Factor.indd 38

balls then off the 1st tee as the sun came out. It was a bit cold and windy, but this was all gravy. I even played pretty well, shot 77. A Tillinghast gem. Well, I couldn’t dodge the last bullet, could I? Temps were to drop to 25, snow in forecast for Sat AM, first time in 35 years. I woke up doubtful, waiting for the call that our trip to Monterey was off. The call never came, as it was just a dusting. I met Stu halfway, and we were off to Cypress Point, world’s #2 course. We arrived at 10:30, not a car in the lot, we had the whole place to ourselves. We hit a few balls, then to the 1st tee. What a view! It was nippy but the sun came out by the 6th hole, and the rest of the day was perfect. Those last 11 holes were next to the ocean, with magnificent Cypress trees, lots of seals swimming or resting on the Pacific Ocean rocks below. I even got it over the ocean on the legendary 16th hole par 3, 240 all carry. Finished with a par for 77, not too bad. We had the grille room to ourselves, then a stop at the pro shop for some shirts and hats. Bucket list item #1, done. The Rose Factor lives! P.S. – Stu had it tough, he was taking the 10 PM red eye private jet to Augusta, for 36 holes Sunday and 36 holes Monday. Life is good. Only wish he needed a fourth.

Passion for the fruit of the vine swirled with quality, individuality and support for humanitarian causes around the globe. These wines are part of Gruppo La-Vis, one of the most prominent Italian companies in the wine business. Dating back to 1948, a group of Trentinian winemakers formed a cooperative and laid their foundation. Through in-depth study of the morphology of the land, it became possible to identify the best form of cultivation for each micro-zone, resulting in the most efficient relationship between the territory and production. Gruppo La-Vis is a group of wineries which share the same family values; each winery is rooted in its terroir and each has a deep-seated sense of individuality, which the group is committed to nurturing and communicating.

Intaglio is a proud partner of Toast to Humanity International: A unique initiative that raises support for humanitarian causes globally

GOLFER’S GUIDE NEWS Golf Tips and Local Golf News from Delaware Valley ■ State of the Game Sixteen years ago when I started this magazine, the National Golf Foundation reported that we’d need a new course to open every day, to keep up with the demand. Oh if that were only true today. Golfers took up the game, then quit, kids now play soccer and lacrosse, it takes too long to play a round, golf courses in oversupply, demand down. Real estate boomed then busted, the economy is weak. No new courses are opening, some are closing, including Island Green CC in Philly, which opened a few years ago to great success, now will be turned into a distribution facility for Teva Pharmaceuticals. Many private clubs are hurting too. Is the worst over, only time will tell. In the meantime, check out good deals at private clubs and your local daily fee course. It’s a great time to be a golfer. ■ People in the News Congratulations go to Golf Digest Chairman and editor Jerry Tarde, who will be given the PGA of America’s 2011 Lifetime Achievement in Journalism Award at the Golf Writers of America annual bash at Augusta National on April 6. Jerry grew up playing golf at Juniata with Juniata Foundation head Bob Wheeler. Jerry also spent a lot of time at Atlantic City CC, learning about the game from Leo Fraser. He started as a golf writer and moved his way up the ladder. Another local boy makes good. It was a monster year for Chesapeake Bay Golf Club pro Andy Barbin. A few years ago, Andy was diagnosed with a debilitating case of ulcerative colitis, battling the disease until ultimately beating the odds. He was 46

046-048 News.indd 1

2011 Issue 1

given tremendous support during his illness, surgery and recovery by the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America(CCFA). Andy has since become a leader in CCFA , helping with education and fundraising. His efforts have helped make the Delaware Valley chapter a leader in the U.S. In recognition of his efforts, Andy will receive the CCFA 2011 Man of the Year Award at their 36th annual Renaissance Ball on May 7 at the Hyatt Regency at Penn’s Landing. But that’s only part of Andy’s big year. The PGA of America named Andy the recipient of their 2010 President’s Plaque, awarded for helping to grow the game both locally and nationally. Still more awards, as the local Phila PGA section named Andy Barbin as their Pro of the Year for his leadership qualities and US Kids Golf named Andy as one of their 50 top teaching pros, helping junior golfers all over the region. More awards and honors for several top teaching pros in the area. Lou Guzzi of the Talamore Golf Academy was named by Golf Magazine as a top 100 pro for 2011-12. Eric Macluen, another top 100 teacher, has moved his Golf Academy to the new Applecross Golf Club in Honeybrook. Eric’s work with juniors has been acclaimed for the last decade. Speaking of junior stars, one of New Jersey’s own has earned her LPGA card. Angela Oh of Maple Shade finished 6th at the LPGA Q-School last fall and is getting ready for a full year on tour. I met Angela when she was in high school, hitting balls by the thousands at Fox Meadow Driving Range. She went on to play well at the University of Tennessee and now is at the big dance. We’ll be following her throughout the year, hope to see her at the ShopRite Classic at Seaview in June.

■Special Events As usual, there are a ton of great charity golf events each year, with golf continuing to be the best way to raise money for worthy causes. Here are just a few you might consider supporting. On Monday May 9 at Commonwealth National, my good friend Joe McKeown along with his family, will host their annual bash in supporting Alzheimer’s research. It’s always one of my favorite events, held at a great course, with incredible food and lots of interesting silent and live auction items. There’s never a dull moment at Ron Jaworski’s annual Celebrity Shootout at Atlantic City CC, this year’s fun runs from June 4-6. There’s the pairing party, the Shootout with nine of Ron’s football and sports celebrity friends and the celebrity-amateur tournament. Proceeds benefit the United Way of South Jersey and the Jaws Youth Foundation. Last on this short list is a new event for me, the Philly Sports Hall of Fame Classic at Huntingdon Valley CC on Monday June 20. Everyone who plays will be paired with a Philly sports legend, a hall of famer, or local sports or media celebrity. The fun starts early and goes all day, with golf, great food, live and silent auction items and more. Proceeds benefit local student programs and youth sports. You can’t go wrong helping kids. For more info, go to www.phillyhall.org or email me at rosefactor@aol.com if you’re interested in playing or just coming to the dinner. Meet your local legend and support the kids, it’s a win-win.

One more special event to report is the 100th anniversary at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort on the Delaware. There will be all sorts of great events through out the year, including the 2011 Centennial Cup, designed to bring golfers together for competition, prizes and great food. There are tournaments all season, played on Shawnee’s beautiful 27 holes, designed by A.W. Tillinghast, his first design ever back in 1911. Tillinghast went on to design top 100 courses like Medinah, Philadelphia Cricket Club, Baltusrol and Winged Foot. Make Shawnee a must visit this year, for golf, great accomodations, their spa and much more. Call 1-800-SHAWNEE for more info. ■Local Tours If playing lots of great courses under tournament conditions is something you want, here are a few choices, whether you’re a scratch golfer or 20+ handicap. If you’re a member of a private club or affiliated with almost any daily fee course in the 4 state area, the Golf Association of Philadelphia (GAP) will have something for you. Events start in April with GAP’s Team matches, where over 10,000 golfers will tee it up on 3 Sundays to see who the top team of 12 players are. Tournaments will run all year, including Fall and Winter series events for players of all levels. Their website is chocked full of golf information as well, making www.gapgolf.org one of my every day stops. For public and private players alike,

check out the Philly Publinks Golf Association (PPGA). They run a series of tournaments throughout the year, open to all amateurs with a GHIN handicap, whether from a private club, public club or without an affiliation. Go to www.phillypublinks.com for more info, or see their schedule in this section of Golfer’s Guide. And new this year, is a major amateur tour coming to our area. The GOLFWEEK Amateur Tour is starting in the Delaware Valley, with a season on 14 tournaments at great golf courses from the Jersey Shore to Northeast Maryland. The first event is a beauty, scheduled for April 30 at the Robert Trent Jones Metedeconk GC in Jackson, NJ. It’s an exceptional course, one of many great designs on the GW Am Tour, including Tom Fazio’s Galloway National, Gary Player’s ACE Club, William Flynn’s Philmont North course and the PB Dye Golf Club in Maryland. Season long winners can qualify for the national championships in Hilton Head, SC on Oct
