he 2010 summer season is coming to an end and we are moving into my favorite time of the year. The cooler temperatures always convince me to make time to tee it up at one of the many fantastic Lowcountry golf courses. For the last issue of 2010, one of my favorite courses is on the cover, the Hampton Hall Club. I remember playing this Pete Dye Signature course when it opened in 2004 and thinking to myself how beautiful the landscape is and how big those greens are. Not only are they big, but on your average 15 to 20 foot putt, expect your putting line to have 2 or 3 breaks before you reach the hole. As you may have seen in the previous issue of Golfer’s Guide, the Country Club of Hilton Head spent the summer rebuilding their greens and now they are ready for your approach shots and birdie putts. Learn more about this renovation by reading the article on page 13. For a limited time The Oldfield Golf Club is allowing non-members the chance to play this private course designed by Greg Norman. Turn to pages 48 & 49 and you will find a special invitation to play this amazing layout located on the banks of the Okatie River. As always, I encourage you to use this edition of Golfer’s Guide as a valuable resource for researching, planning and booking your next round of golf in our area and when you’re done, pass it along to a family member, friend or neighbor so they can enjoy all Hilton Head Island and the surrounding Lowcountry has to offer! T

he Pete Dye Signature Design at Hampton Hall Club is one of the master’s more entertaining and “player friendly” golf courses, enhancing the Hilton Head area’s newest and most welcoming golf community – and delivering a premium country club experience. While Hampton Hall remains a private country club at heart, the club is now accepting non-member play. Visitors and guests can schedule tee times or contact the membership department to participate in the recently unveiled “Member for a Day” program. The Member for a Day Package includes lunch for two at the Hampton Hall Golf Grille, access to all country club amenities, a 30-minute community tour, use of the club’s comprehensive practice 6

facility and a round of golf for two, which includes cart fees, on the club’s Pete Dye Signature Course. Also available is the Hampton Hall Exploration Package, which includes overnight accommodations at an area hotel. “I’ve asked a lot of the guest players about the course and here’s what they share with me,” said Gary Otto, head golf professional at Hampton Hall. “It’s an incredible golf experience, good layout, not jam-packed with players and it is very open off the tees. We took advantage of every inch of real estate, and the greens are big and generous for holding shots. Hampton Hall delivers all of the private intangibles that you’d expect – with impeccable course conditions and unrivalled country club service.

“There just isn’t a weak hole out here,” Otto added. “Every hole flows into the next very nicely. Pete Dye did an n excellent job.” Dye’s flair for Lowcountry artistry and knack for creating spectacular vantage points is on display throughout the layout, especially as you leave the Mediterranean-style clubhouse and embark upon the back nine holes. On this stretch h you’ll find Hampton Hall’s signature hole - the 13th is a par 4 decorated with breathtaking scenery. A large, weathered oak hugging the right side of the fairway dominates the landscape, and serves as a target off the tee. You’ll also be treated to views of a beautiful bridge that spans a crystal clear lake and connects the club with the outside world. 2010 ISSUE 3

Luxury Living An article running in Hilton Head’s Island Packet newspaper in advance of Hampton Hall’s grand opening praised the club, calling it “Heavenly Hampton.” Of his latest project, John Reed, who worked

on luxury golf communities Colleton River, Belfair and Berkeley Hall, boasted, “It’s a developer’s dream.” Six years later, Hampton Hall is the picture of vitality, and this private country club community is recognized as one of the premier places to live in the Lowcountry. Set on 1,100 pristine acres in Bluffton, South Carolina, far removed from the busy highway that connects Hilton Head’s sun-drenched shores to the history and heritage of Savannah and Beaufort, Hampton Hall is close but secluded. The development is a joint venture between luxury home builder Toll Brothers and Reed Development, a combination of national excellence and local experience. 8

006-009 Hampton Hall.indd 3

This dynamic pairing at Hampton Hall has created one of the most diverse and celebrated gated communities in the area. The demographics of the golf membership and the general community is composed of young families, and includes a h healthy numb ber of working ccouples with b beginning golfeers at home. Hampton H Hall offers water aand golf view h home sites, an eextraordinary ccollection of T Toll Brothers h homes, and aan impressive rroster of custom h home builders. G Golf cottages aand carriage h homes are also available. The collection of country club amenities at the disposal of residents includes: a championship Pete Dye Golf Course, 12,000-square-foot clubhouse, fullservice golf shop, men’s and ladies’ locker rooms, grille room and bar, 14,000square-foot fitness center, a lakeside meeting facility, 24,000-square-foot community center, aerobics/yoga instruction center, an outdoor swimming pool, clay and hard surface tennis courts, basketball courts and a children’s playground. Membership Has its Benefits It’s difficult to ignore the handsome trophies that closely resemble the hardware handed out to winners of the PGA Tour’s World Golf Championships on your left as

you enter the Hampton Hall clubhouse. Awarded to the top performers in the club’s men’s and ladies’ leagues, these symbols of achievement prove that every last detail is done right at Hampton Hall. “Everything we do here is first class,” Otto said. “Even in these challenging times, maintenance, luxury, and unparallel hospitality remain the Hampton Hall priority. We have not compromised our services, and continue to provide an incredible experience. Value has become a sacred term in the golf industry, and Hampton Hall offers it in abundance. Otto says the course conditions and amenities at Hampton Hall, compete with the most upscale, private communities in the nation. In addition, the cost of owning a home and becoming a member at Hampton Hall compares favorably with other clubs of similar stature. Everything a discerning golfer wants, a discerning golfer gets at Hampton Hall – fluid pace of play that allows you to ease into a nice rhythm, playing conditions that are second to none, a championshiplevel Pete Dye course and practice area, and exclusive access to advanced tee times. 2010 ISSUE 3

Popular Country Club of Hilton Head Updates Putting Surfaces

E

ach year, the Country Club of Hilton Head is nominated for most popular layout on the island by the members and guests who play it. On the strength of a summer-long project to convert all 18 of its greens to MiniVerde ultra dwarf Bermuda grass, the Rees Jones design has again secured its place among the upper echelon of premier Lowcountry courses annually jockeying for position. “We are very excited about unveiling these terrific new greens to our members as well as to island residents and visitors,” said Chip Pellerin, head golf professional at the Country Club of Hilton Head. “They can look forward to a truly world-class golf experience. These new surfaces will greatly enhance the playability and challenge of the golf course. It’s just icing on the cake as far as the facility goes.” MiniVerde has a number of characteristics that have made it a wise choice for distinguished venues throughout the Southeast like Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Club, host of the Tour Championship, and TPC Sawgrass, home of the Players Championship. This warm-season turf is low maintenance, has an appealing dark-green appearance and offers a firm, fast and true putting surface that can be cut close allowing for Stimpmeter readings between 9 and 11. The change in grass will have little to no effect on the original Jones green configurations, and should prolong the steady stream of accolades and recognition enjoyed by the club since opening in 1986. In the past the Country Club of Hilton Head, which is owned and operated by ClubCorp, has received a 4-Star rating for 2010 ISSUE 3

013.CC Hilton Head Edit.indd 1

excellence by Golf Digest, and was recently named as Hilton Head’s “Best Golf Course/ Club” by readers of the Island Packet newspaper. Meandering through atypically hilly terrain, the layout is capable of challenging accomplished competitors and providing emerging golfers with a venue to fine-tune their talent. The layout has hosted two U.S. Open qualifiers and is a certified U.S. Kids golf course with two sets of tees inside of 2,000 yards. Highlighting the semi-private course is one of the island’s most scenic holes – the rolling 575-yard, par-5 12th that requires a blind tee shot and well-placed approach to a large green tucked into the marshes of Skull Creek. In addition to the championship golf course, the Country Club of Hilton Head is equipped with a host of amenities including an excellent learning/practice facility, six (Har-Tru) tennis courts, a 5,500-square-foot fitness center and stately clubhouse. For tee time reservations, please call (843) 681-4653. For information on membership programs, please contact Membership Director Catherine Daugherty at 681-2582, ext. 123. The Best Kept Secret on Hilton Head: Now is the Time to Buy Real Estate

G

olf is a funny game. Just when you’re about to dump your clubs at the Salvation Army, you birdie the toughest hole at your club and suddenly have illusions of a single-digit handicap. Of course, there’s never a “bad day” on the golf course on Hilton Head Island. A lousy score, maybe; but with a year-round weather-friendly climate, stunning scenery at every turn and amazing wildlife, a golf game here is always special. My name is Joe Agee and I’m an avid golfer who has been blessed with living and working (in real estate) on Hilton Head since 1978. I’ve been fortunate to have played every course on the Island and been a member of a private club. My dad was the golf coach at the William & Mary for 35 years so I’m afflicted with the “golf bug.” My two major highlights since moving here are playing Augusta National (shot 88) and shooting my lowest score ever (70) at Wexford Golf Club. I feel comfortable calling myself a local “golf guru” when it comes to Hilton Head golf and specifically golf real estate opportunities.

Hilton Head Golf Membership and Access Private Equity Clubs: you automatically become a member of the club when you purchase property in the community. Private Non-Equity Clubs: you don’t have to own property to become a member. Semi-Private Membership: courses in resort communities – like Harbour Town Golf Links in Sea Pines – have membership plans available to property owners offering reduced green fees, select reserved tee times, etc. Public Play: with over 15 courses on the Island available, no matter where you live here there’s always a perfect place to tee it up. 26

Hilton Head Golf Real Estate: What’s Your Perfect Fit? Would you be a permanent resident living here full-time, a second-home owner enjoying extended stays at different times of the year or a vacation-rental property owner where your home or villa is a rented when not using it? I welcome the opportunity to help you find the perfect real estate “fit” based on your needs - be it a premier home in a private club or a golf villa five minutes from the ocean – I feel confident I can provide local real estate knowledge and insights that would be invaluable. I’ve been lucky to work with hundreds of clients over the past three decades – even played a little “customer golf” – and it’s been rewarding to witness families and friends share so many memorable experiences with Hilton Head as the backdrop. Real estate is always a function of LOCATION. But with the recent economic downturn, what’s more critical is TIMING. And NOW IS THE TIME TO BUY because prices are 20-30 percent lower than just a few years ago; but as the economy improves demand will push prices higher.

N

estled within the quiet enclave of Leamington at Palmetto Dunes, this Arthur Hills course is one of the most distinctive layouts on the island. On a site blessed with continuous lines of dunes and thick stands of palmettos, Hills took full advantage of the natural features to create a rolling layout with a unique seaside character. The scenic setting of this mature course is a favorite with golfers and the local wildlife – you’re likely to see dozens of species of birds along with alligators and the occasional deer. The Hills isn’t just beautiful scenery though; offbalance lies and ocean breezes are a constant challenge and lagoons come into play on 10 holes, although fairway bunkers are notably absent. Challenging and fun, this course is a shot-maker’s favorite with emphasis on hitting your target rather than distance. The course has a well-earned reputation as one the island’s best golf experiences. Add to this the country club atmosphere and you will leave feeling like a welcome guest, ready to visit again.

Hovering high above the denselyforested and dramatic Lowcountry landscape that Hilton H Head, help h iis Hil d you can’t’ h l but notice that the entirety of this 12-mile long and five-mile wide barrier island bears a striking resemblance to one giant golf course. There’s plenty of sand – miles of pristine Atlantic coastline and family-friendly beaches. You’ll find a few water hazards – well yes the Atlantic Ocean, but there’s also the Intracoastal Waterway, Calibogue Sound and an intricate network of lagoons, marshlands and creeks. Finally, feast your eyes upon plenty of green space and tree cover – responsible development has preserved much of the island’s natural beauty. Quite literally, this is the “Golf Island.” While it covers only 42 square miles, Hilton Head is saturated with championship golf courses built by the game’s best architects including Pete Dye, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Rees Jones, Robert Trent Jones and Arthur Hills. The island’s signature course is Harbour Town Golf Links, a world-renowned Dye design that plays host to the PGA Tour’s Verizon Heritage every April. The 18th hole at Harbour Town is the most photographed golf scene on Hilton Head – a windswept par 4 with native grasses that borders blustery Cali-

bogue Sound and unfolds in the direction of the island’s iconic candy-striped lighthouse. Hilton H Head home to award-winning Hil d iis h d i i family resorts such as Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort and The Sea Pines Resort, two properties that seamlessly combine world-class golf, luxury amenities and recreation. Overall, there are more than two dozen championship-caliber courses in Hilton Head and the surrounding area. If golf isn’t your game, there’s still plenty to do in this tasteful paradise. An exceedingly popular activity is to gather the entire family for a bike tour of the island; more than 50 miles of public bike and nature trails are available. Other options include fishing, shopping, swimming and sunbathing. The “Stay and Play” package has never been better. With thousands of hotel, resort and rental properties to choose from, it should be easy to find the perfect fit. A year-round average temperature of 70° and an endless stream of recreational opportunities make Hilton Head an ideal destination for everyone, especially dedicated golfers. Inside the gates of this private community with a passion for the outdoors, towering oaks snuggled by Spanish moss stand guard along the main drive. Look to your left at the charming red barn and adjoining stables, and prop up your ears to listen in on nature’s chorus. The ponds you pass have no superfluous fountains, but they are fully stocked for fishermen to enjoy. A striking outfitters center (part hunting lodge, nature store and wildlife classroom) and the resplendent River Club are just minutes away. As you pull into the parking lot of the Greg Norman championship design and face the antebellum clubhouse, the foundation for an enchanting round of golf on one of the Lowcountry’s most unparalleled yet unknown courses has already been poured. Established at the turn of the new century, Oldfield is remarkably old school. Norman certainly followed a minimalist manifesto in crafting his first course in the area. Oldfield’s synergy with nature allows plenty of room for golfers to play alongside egrets and fox squirrels. The community’s commitment to preserving the parcel of land first granted by an English Lord in 1732 did not go unnoticed. Oldfield was the first development to earn Audubon International’s Neighborhood for Nature Award, and is one of a handful of golf clubs designated as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. The golf course is understated and elegant, inviting shots to run along the ground ala the Open Championship at St. Andrews and showcasing tranquil Lowcountry scenery. Large waste areas are prevalent throughout the course, but they’re a darker color so as not to be confused with the white sand bunkers. These hazards with steep sod sidewalls and low entry points are one of the more unique features at Oldfield. Aprons around the greens are shaved low, giving a player a variety of short game options.

“I like basically flat greens with a soft flow, like Australian courses,” said Norman, who christened his creation by playing each hole with a member in 2002. “I like a lot of thought processes for chipping. The ball is round. I like to see it roll.” Holes on the front nine are tree-lined and selfcontained; you don’t really take notice to the adjacent holes while going about your current business. As is the case throughout the design, seemingly prehistoric and peaceful oaks are omnipresent. As you turn for home, the salty Okatie River soaks the air with smells of the sea. Norman took advantage of this handsome plot of land oonce occupied by pecan orchards and windswept fields eld to create an open atmosphere with tremendous vantag vantage points and views of neighboring holes and homes. A water-born breeze is more pronounced on the back nine nine. “We dream of getting a site like this one,” said Norman during the construction of Oldfield. “And since this is our first course in the Lowcountry, we want to make it something special.” Norman has succeeded, giving members and guests a low-profile layout that illustrates what Lowcountry golf should look like. Golf is only part of the equation at Oldfield. This community welcomes all ages to experience its comfort and grace, and provides activities for everyone to enjoy. The Sport Club houses tennis courts, a fitness center and swimming pools. The Outfitters Center is the starting point for a day of exploration. Eight miles of hiking, biking and walking trails ribbon through the woods, marshland and water. Growth is still occurring within community, and home sites are readily available for purchase as are existing homes. These structures pay homage to Lowcounty tradition, and depict architecture reminiscent of small coastal towns and rural villages. Beauty, as they say, is in the eye of the beholder. Arrange a visit to Oldfield today to soak in the ambiance of this Lowcountry enclave. The golf club is currently accepting trial memberships with a monthly dues structure, and “Member for a Day” programs are available upon request. Why taking a golf lesson on vacation can benefit your golf game

by Pete Popovich

A

ll of us that have played golf for any length of time know that the game has its ebbs and flows. The same is true for our golf swing and from time to time it is necessary to have a ‘check-up’ by a ‘fresh set of eyes’ to ensure all the parts of the swing are in tune. In this respect, it is best to have a golf instructor that can see and identify the causes of your swing faults as opposed to the effects of those faults. Most golfers that visit the Lowcountry are golfers that have been playing for some time and have a teacher they are comfortable with in their home area. However, Hilton Head Island has long been a ‘hot bed’ for golf and the variety of visiting golfers offers a wide range of experience for an instructor who takes his teaching and each student seriously instead of teaching a ‘one method fits all students’ approach. This is not to say that your golf professional at home is not an adequate instructor. However, we at the Golf Performance Academy are privy to research that greatly benefits our students and we are devoted to applying such knowledge, whereas a hometown or club professional might have a multitude of different responsibilities: making tee times, checking inventory, attending meetings, etc. We at The Golf Performance Academy have studied and worked with leading professionals in club fitting, physiology, neurophysiology, ophthalmology and biomechanics to ensure that all our students improve upon completion of a lesson.

051.GPA Edit.indd 1

Compared to other golf instruction, instruction at the Golf Performance Academy is geared to discovering, working-with and enhancing your natural swing versus trying to force you into a ‘model’ swing and we stand on our proven ability to achieve positive results with this approach from set-up to ball striking to putting. Tell us where you need improvement and we will see that you get it – guaranteed. If you are on vacation as a beginner, a three times a week veteran, an accomplished amateur, or even have ambitions of playing professionally and are looking for a new and honestly productive golf experience, contact the Golf Performance Academy-Hilton Head. You will not only learn the science behind playing better golf, but how to apply that science on your way to lower scores.

Open Season at Sanctuary Golf Club

N

ow in its second full season after a thorough renovation by Texas-based architect Jeff Brauer, Sanctuary Golf Club at Cat Island invites the public to experience one of the most stunning and tranquil golf course settings in the Carolina Lowcountry. While the award-winning golf course tucked away on tiny Cat Island boasts a thriving membership of more than 200, the club gladly accepts daily-fee play and offers special rates for Beaufort County residents and players taking advantage of twilight tee times when offered throughout the year. Non-residents are also welcome to take on this restored classic. Originally designed by renowned architect George W. Cobb, the Sanctuary is an understated paradise with sprawling greens, delightful panoramic views of surrounding shores and marshes and tree-lined fairways that ebb and flow with the natural contours of the charming Lowcountry landscape. Playing to a reasonable distance of 6,673 yards from the tips, the Sanctuary caters to golfers of all ability levels with four sets of tees. Formerly known as South Carolina National, the course was modernized in the summer of 2008 when ownership enlisted the services of Brauer to replace and level all of the greens and tees, plant saltwatertolerant Supreme Paspalum grass to improve turf quality, enlarge greens and install new bunkers throughout the course. In addition to the on-course changes, the practice facili-

Heron Point by Pete Dye

D

ye’s done it again! The designer of the famed Harbour Town Golf Links has returned to The Sea Pines Resort to do a complete transformation within the old Sea Marsh course corridors, creating Heron Point by Pete Dye, a new course that’s nothing short of a modern masterpiece. Stripped down to its roots, Dye reshaped the old fairways into dramatic angles and shifting elevations. While featuring seven sets of tees including a special set of permanent tees for family enjoyment, this course also has a set of sharp teeth, with its rolling fairways and undulating Mini Verde greens (same as TPC Sawgrass), board and grass walls along some of the greens that border water, and relocated lagoons, moved to catch the errant shot. You’ll also notice how much the course has been opened up, with more greens in the open sunshine and more amazing views of the forests and marshlands that make up The Sea Pines Resort. Yet again, Dye has created a new legend among Hilton Head Island golf courses and a perfect complement to Harbour Town. Play them both and see for yourself. 58

Hilton Head’s Signature Series Features Course of the Year

Through their play at the Heritage tournament over the years and substantial contributions to the game of golf, Arnold Palmer and Davis Love III have achieved considerable acclaim in the Lowcountry. Today, the pair’s architectural expertise can be enjoyed by visitors and area residents at Crescent Pointe, a Palmer Signature design, and nearby Eagle’s Pointe, a Love Signature course. In a year when the golf industry, really any industry for that matter, has struggled to pluck positives from the numbers and headlines, Crescent Pointe completed a comprehensive upgrade of its facilities that attracted critical acclaim. The clubhouse overhaul included a fresh coat of paint, new furniture for the foyer area and new carpeting. Flat screen televisions, which will be popular gathering spots during football season, and sparkling granite countertops have also been installed. Window treatments and new décor have added both comfort and style to the clubhouse. “It just has a homier feel now,” said Bill Layman, director of golf operations at Crescent Pointe. The 6,673-yard layout that features striking white sand bunkers, marsh views, century-old oaks, pines and magnolia trees

received what amounted to a fresh coat of paint during the capital improvement project. On-course upgrades at Crescent Pointe significantly enhanced turf quality, aesthetics and playability. “We did some resodding and implemented a very strong fertilization program,” added Layman, who attributed a lot of the project’s success to the tireless work of Superintendent Kevin Morgan. “I’ve been here from day one and the golf course is as good as it’s ever been.” The overall investment into the facilities at Crescent Pointe came to nearly $700,000. The dedication of staff and ownership yielded immediate results, as Crescent Pointe Golf Club was named “2010 Golf Course of the Year” by the Lowcountry Golf Course Owners Association. Receiving this honor puts the Palmer design in rarified air, joining past winners like Harbour Town Golf Links, Palmetto Dunes and Hilton Head National. “We were thrilled,” said Layman. “Not only did we work very, very hard this whole year to get the clubhouse and the golf course in the best condition possible, but we also worked very, very hard on our presentation to try to win that award so we we’re excited.” It’s already been a successful year for

Eagle’s Pointe Golf Club

The Davis Love III-designed Eagle’s Pointe Golf Club offers numerous “risk-reward” opportunities.

C

onveniently located on Highway 278 just seven miles west of the bridge to Hilton Head Island, Eagle’s Pointe Golf Club is a signature design of five-time Heritage champion Davis Love III. The hallmarks of Eagle’s Pointe are its classic risk-reward design, natural beauty, strategy, variety and superb conditioning, along with outstanding customer service. Winding through moss-draped live oaks and pines and freshwater wetlands and lagoons, Eagle’s Pointe’s spacious corridors allow golfers to keep driver in hand, but still favor placement over length. Putting your drives in the right position on the generous fairways is a must to negotiate the dramatic bunkering, unique green sites and large, contoured putting surfaces. In Love’s own words, “It’s easy to make a difficult golf course. The trick is to make a golf course that everybody can play and will want to come back and play again. You have to find a balance.” Love has succeeded at Eagle’s Pointe, a course that will test every club in your bag, while allowing players to take advantage of their strengths. Big hitters are green-lighted to attack the par 5s, but those with accurate short games can save strokes around the large greens.
