The local courses offer some of the best rates of the year, many summer leagues are in full swing and access to some of the private courses not usually available to the general public are permitted by either low summer membership packages, reciprocal country club memberships or by playing with the Big Summer Golf Card. As you page though our great selection of courses, from executive courses where you can easily walk 9 or 18, to challenging championship caliber courses, you’ll notice the common threads of affordable golf courses, great service and southern hospitality. Be sure to include them on your summer play list. You may want to consider a short getaway, and to help you plan it, we’ve included a story by Mark Cardon about his golf adventures in the mountains of western North Carolina. t is small world up here in the mountains of Western North Carolina where for six months out of the year it is about as close to paradise as one can get. Quite of few people from the SarasotaBradenton area call this home during the hot summer Florida months and for good reason. It is much cooler, the golf courses are challenging for flat landers and fun to play. In fact, even the pros at the only socalled public courses in the Cashiers area have Sarasota ties. Dave Abrahamson is the head pro at picturesque Sapphire National Golf Club. The retired U.S. Army colonel lives in Osprey during the winter months and plays in games twice a week at the Lake Venice Golf Club with his good friend Rod Parry, the general manager at Lake Venice. sarasota.golfersguide.com

Craig Hartle is the head pro at the High Hampton Inn Country Club. He was in Sarasota just three weeks ago visiting Chris Ayles, the director of instruction at TPC-Prestancia. Both were on the same championship high school team in Michigan years ago. So much for the small-world hook. Like many Floridians, I am here just trying to cool off for a few days and give these mountain courses my best shot. It didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take me long to discover the best club in my bag at Sapphire National. It is called a walking stick. Without it, I would have been lost for days. Steep, treacherous and fascinating are the words that come to mind. The course boasts majestic mountain views, dramatic elevation changes and a 4 Â˝ -star rating from Golf Digest. 38

When playing Sapphire National, make sure you purchase a guide book and ask if the golf cart brakes have been inspected. Otherwise, you could end up in South Carolina. For high handicappers, making pars or birdies on Sapphire National is comparable to Christmas Day. The green on the par 3 No. 2 hole is located over 100 feet below the back tee. The course guide book claimed par is a good score on this hole. I made par, and it made my day. Golfers that have played Sapphire National will never forget the 13th hole, a par 4 adjacent to a spectacular waterfall. Locals say it is one of the most famous holes in North Carolina. any better, the downhill 15th hole challenges shot-making skills. The par 3 has a small island green that can be reached by either swimming or boardwalk. I took the boardwalk and circled a 2 on my scorecard. High Hampton is shorter, much flatter and easier than Sapphire National. There is only one bunker on the entire course. “If you get in that bunker, you need to come see me for a lesson,” Hartle said. The fees for Sapphire National are $80 before 3 p.m. and $45 after. At High Hampton, the fees are $79 before 3 p.m. and $49 after. Need a reasonable place to stay? Consider Toxaway Views, a quiet hideaway located between Brevard and Cashiers.
