As the “Official golf courses of the World Golf Fully stocked pro shop Hall of Fame,” the King & Bear and Slammer Clubhouses with full& Squire are the only resort golf courses in the service restaurants world designed as collaborations between Hall GPS in every golf cart of Fame members — Arnold Palmer & Jack Chilled apples at the Nicklaus and Sam Snead & Gene Sarazen. first and 10th tees These celebrated courses offer tournament-ready course conditions year-round and have served as host to several professional tournaments, including the Champions Tour’s Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf and Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf. Both courses have five tee box choices and offer very distinctive challenges. The King & Bear has more forced carries suiting the power game that Palmer and Nicklaus brought to their era. The Slammer & Squire demands the accurate shot-making that made Snead and Sarazen legends. Displays of historic photography and artifacts from all four Hall of Fame members are on display in the clubhouses.

A Legendary Collaboration

King & Bear, named for its co-designers Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, opened in 2000 and is the first-and-only design collaboration between these two World Golf Hall of Fame members. Putting aside their legendary rivalry, Palmer and Nicklaus wanted to create a track that was unique, extremely playable and picturesque. Palmer himself selected No. 15 on the course as one of his ‘Dream 18’ in an issue of Sports Illustrated. King & Bear is a remarkable blend of the past, present and future of the game of golf. The front nine is an open, links-style layout that gives a nod to the heritage of the historic city of St. Augustine, Fla. The back nine is more traditional Florida golf, fringed with loblolly pines, 200-year-old oak trees, indigenous coquina rock and numerous water features. With 7,279 yards, it’s a “driver’s” course, which should come as no surprise, as both Palmer and Nicklaus wielded awesome power games in their primes.

In the Shadow of Greatness

Slammer & Squire was designed by course architect Bobby Weed with World Golf Hall of Fame Members Sam Snead (the “Slammer”) and Gene Sarazen, (the “Squire”) serving as player consultants. All three men shared a desire to build a course that not only rewards good shot making but also preserves the area’s natural beauty. What developed is a well-groomed course that showcases the pristine, unspoiled wooded areas, wetlands and natural beauty of the region with an emphasis on the short game. The 6,939-yard course is relatively wide open with several contoured greens and like the King & Bear, features several water hazards. Players will revel in the three finishing holes, especially the par-5 16th hole with its elevated fairway and breath-taking views of the World Golf Hall of Fame. World Golf Hall of Fame Challenge Hole and Putting Course Take the Challenge

The World Golf Hall of Fame’s Challenge Hole is an island green, reminiscent of the famed 17th hole of THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra. At just 132 yards it doesn’t look very long … until you step up and face all that water! Try your hand at two balls for $5 or five balls for $10. Land two balls on the green and receive a commemorative guest poster. A special prize awaits if you’re one of the lucky ones to hit a hole-in-one!

Puttin’ Around

Just down the Walk of Champions is the World Golf Hall of Fame Putting Course where you can leave your driver and wedge behind. The Putting Course is an 18-hole, real grass championship putting course designed to USGA specifications. It is so authentic that the greens are mowed and the flag sticks and tee markers are moved nearly every day. And the Hall of Fame supplies the putters! Admission to the Putting Course is $5 or is included with the purchase of a Hall of Fame admission. The World Golf Hall of Fame Challenge Hole and Putting Course are open daily and both can be reserved for special events and parties through www.WorldGolfHallOfFame.org.
