Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Lydia Koe, the world’s No. 1 female golfer and defending champion of the Swinging Skirts LPGA Classic. She also posted five other wins last season—as she turned from 16 years old to 17. As I watched her outplay seasoned pros double her age and experience, I was most impressed with her manner, respect and perspective about her game and life. Heck, she’s still in high school! Women’s golf now has a rising star whom I hope will inspire millions of girls and women to take up this great sport and help move it into the “must do” mode worldwide. Take the time to watch her play this year—I bet you’ll be inspired, too! Eight-inch holes? Yes, to my surprise the other day, a local course expanded all 18 holes to help compensate for the recent required (and evil) “punched greens.” So we all had loads of fun, and I was able enjoy a round where my max putt count was two—which I’d like to be my norm. We also played our round in less than four hours, on a beautiful and busy Saturday morning. I’d like to see more courses offer the 8” hole

I play a lot of golf and I’m happy to report my game has improved. I attribute much of it to taking golf lessons and attempting to remember the good instruction I’ve received. It all makes perfect sense at the time and I’m usually able to execute the suggestions, but unfortunately, I have difficulty remembering most things, most of the time. Oh well…I’m working at that, too, and am very clear that my enjoyment has increased dramatically just knowing I’ve remembered even a few things to make my game better. Like most things in life, practice helps. I’ll continue on my quest and I hope you do, too. Happy spring!

Chardonnay Golf Club delivers the goods on every one of those factors in profusion, leaving no question why it remains such a stalwart presence on the Northern California golf scene nearly 30 years after its founding.

Unlike many contemporary housing communities sporting names like “Oak Meadows” while containing neither oaks nor meadows, the Chardonnay Golf Club sprawls over a good portion of its 325 acres with...yes, chardonnay grapes! (And a bit of merlot and syrah for good measure.) This is truly and singularly "Golf in the Vineyards" as you can find it nowhere else, both because those vineyards are located in the universally acclaimed wine region of Napa Valley, and because you literally are among the vineyards on virtually every hole. About the only direction you won’t be shadowed by stately chardonnay vines is in the sprawling skies above you. And it means one more thing: countless vines and grapes but ZERO houses anywhere on the course. Chardonnay Club is located on the outskirts of Napa proper in Jameson Canyon, with an American Canyon address. It’s nestled between Highway 29, which bisects Napa’s ubiquitous vineyards, and Highway 80, the major east-west artery connecting San Francisco to Sacramento and Tahoe. This means plentiful marine influence from San Francisco Bay, which is not far at all as the crow flies, and definitely

a factor in the ever changing conditions that characterize so much Bay Area golf. Do you like your late fall and winter days on the relatively warmer side? Summer early mornings under light blankets of fog that crept in sometime since the previous late afternoon? All of it buffeted by cooling, recurrent coastal breezes? You’ll find all that and more at the Chardonnay Club, where the golf can be a 365-day-a-year proposition but every one of those days exhibits the unique character of both the course and its geography. The course started life as an 18-hole layout in 1986 and flexed to 36 and then 27 in subsequent years before settling back to
its 18-hole standard again in May 2010. General Manager Roger Billings, now on his second tour heading up the operation that began for him in 1991 for a five-year stint and then resumed in 2006, enjoyed the flexibility of the 27-hole layout that gave one of the three nines a rest on given days, but sheer economics made that format difficult to sustain as the golf industry contracted again after the boom years of the ‘90s and early ‘00s. Billings, working with his golf course superintendent at the time, Gary Cozart, and the rest of the Chardonnay staff worked diligently in reconfiguring and refurbishing the course to its best advantage. “We wanted to maintain the holes that provided the biggest bang in terms of views and playability,” says Billings. “Then we got onto improvement projects that have continued to this

day. There’s no day anymore when a golf course isn’t working on something or other to enhance play.” Currently high on the improvement list are bunker additions, mounding and irrigation projects. Notable about the latter is that Chardonnay Golf Club maintains contracts
This 198-yard par-3 plays invitingly short and downhill, but that’s hardly synonymous with “easy.” Our colleagues at Golf Digest called it “one of the most fun holes in America,” its banana-shaped, shallow-but90-yards-wide, five-tiered green among the chief reasons. Let the pin placement here
with the Napa Sanitation District to irrigate with reclaimed wastewater, making the course as figuratively and literally green as possible in these drought-affected times. For all its dazzling vineyard theme, the Chardonnay Golf Club also sports a rare symmetry in perfectly dividing its 18-hole, 6,942 yard, par-72 layout into an even half dozen par-3s, 4s and 5s. Further symmetry: five par 5s all run over 500 yards, topping out at the 582-yard No. 7 hole. This is a doozie that plays into a prevailing wind and requires some serious decision-making as you contemplate driving your ball over Fagan Creek and a canyon that will get you to the green. The creek crisscrosses the course on multiple holes, adding some welcome complexity to this classic Chardonnay. That’s followed by No. 8, which could hardly be more different even if it were in some obscure region of the other 49 states that produce wine in this country. determine your tee shot and help you avoid the bunkers and hazard that make this hole such a delightful challenge. No. 14 perhaps takes bragging rights as the most “vineyardy” of this course so noted for its vineyards. Looking just 183 yards down to the pin from an elevated tee, you behold a huge swath of the luscious Napa Valley, to an island green totally surrounded by vines. If that doesn’t put you in a sipping mood once you reach the 19th hole, then wine may not be for you. But there’s no reason the golf shouldn’t be. Costs are in the moderate range, topping out at $89 peak-season, peak-time and drifting down to as low as $39, depending on your age, time of day and season. You can easily spend as much on a bottle of Napa’s finest, which is no small pleasure indeed. Matter of fact, that would pair rather nicely, by anyone’s measure, with the finest vineyard golf on the planet—just one more symmetry to enjoy on this rare vintage of a course.

The intriguing name “Beau Pre” becomes even more intriguing when attached to a golf course tucked away in as picturesque and sparsely populated an area as Beau Pre Golf Club in McKinleyville, Humboldt County. Beau Pre means “beautiful meadow” in French, and the course fits that billing with lush fairways of pine and spruce trees, lovely ponds, and elevated tees to heighten the visual splendor. Water comes into play on nine holes and sand traps are strategically placed. “Majestic” is the operative word for this area some 250 miles north of San Francisco. Redwood National Park and Six Rivers National Forest provide part of the backdrop, and the Pacific Ocean fills out the rest. Travelers bound for Oregon find Beau Pre a perfect stop, with daily public play, excellent in-town lodging, and plentiful other outdoors opportunities available to recreationally minded golfers. McKinleyville also hosts the World's Tallest Totem Pole-at 57,000 pounds and 160 feet high, it was carved from one redwood tree.

Since 1970, residents and visitors have been fortunate to enjoy golf in the most beautiful part of a beautiful city at Bennett Valley Golf Course in Santa Rosa. This tree-lined municipal course just minutes from downtown is surrounded by mountains that are carpeted with oaks, redwoods, and Monterey pines. Designed by the internationally renowned Denis Griffiths (Fairmount at St. Andrews, among many others), “The Ranch” capitalizes on rolling terrain, a natural creek, and abundant other water features to make each round an exercise in graceful, ever-challenging golf. Mill Valley is one of those tucked away, tree-enshrouded towns, population 14,000, for which the word “bucolic” seems to have been coined. So it is little wonder that its municipal golf course is a largely unknown jewel, it being further tucked away—like one of the Chinese boxes-within-boxes that so delight children at holiday time—under lush canopies of coastal redwoods and the soft inviting hills of Marin County. The irony is you can get there within minutes off Highway 101, just nine miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The challenging 9-hole, par-33 layout has six par-4s and the rest par-3. It also contains its own ingenious “short course” (par 27), for those still building their game. Built in 1919, the course was upgraded several years ago with revamped greens, a small practice facility, putting green and snack bar. Club rentals are available, and its “2 for 20” slogan (two hours to play, under 20 bucks) should leave you time and cash aplenty to enjoy the countless other pleasures of this NorCal paradise.

Slow Play Solution? An enterprising chap by the name of Michael Jordan may be taking his own swing at the problem of slow play. The former NBA great is reportedly so fed up with the snail’s pace at the Bear’s Club in Jupiter, Florida, where he is a member with PGA pros Rory McIlroy and Keegan Bradley, that he is considering an option he has on a property near the club. Jordan had Greg Norman out to take a tour of the property. If it winds up coming to fruition as a golf course, Jordan will be able to host a very small cadre of sports comrades who share his passion for fast play. PowerBilt Introduces Air Force One DFX Driver DFX stand for “Deep Face Extreme.” The club is now 5mm deeper than the previous version, which helps it catch the ball at impact slightly longer and combines with the nitrogen inside the clubhead to create reduced spin and more distance. “We reduced the nitrogen to 80 pounds, for better impact feel,” says Ross Kvinge, president of PowerBilt. “This generates a tremendous trampoline effect for increased ball speed. In fact, now the trampoline effect is up to the USGA maximum limit. Shot dispersion is also the tightest ever in our drivers. And by adding 6 grams low and forward in the clubhead, we moved the CG lower and more forward than in any other Air Force One driver. We did this to appease our clubfitters who requested a better smash factor. TaylorMade Golf Debuts the AeroBurner The name “AeroBurner ” derives from the product ’s advanced aerodynamics, a performance variable the TaylorMade R&D members have long obsessed over in their quest to engineer fast driver heads. The driver’s biggest advance is its new “Speed Pocket,” which is twice as big as TaylorMade’s JetSpeed (the first driver to feature the technology). Unlike JetSpeed, AeroBurner drivers do not have loft sleeve technology, which offers loft and lie adjustability. This allowed company engineers to extend the length of the Speed Pocket across the entire sole for maximum performance. The AeroBurner also features Inverted Cone, a technology used in every TaylorMade driver since the R500 Series was launched in 2002. The Inverted Cone milled into the inner side of the clubface promotes high ball speed on off-center hits. Finally, the AeroBurner sports an ultra-light 50-gram Matrix Speed Rul-Z shaft. And ball gone straight! My own findings seem to have been verified in an independent comparison conducted at the highly respected Golf Laboratories, Inc., testing site in San Diego. With a Trackman analysis system measuring spin rates, launch angles and speed, 10 balls from each model were hit and then measured on the Golf Labs grass range. A Few Words About the “Yips” According to Wikipedia, the term “yips” is said to have been popularized by Tommy Armour (the Elder), a champion golfer and teacher, to explain the difficulties that led him to abandon tournament play. Golfers have used words such as “twitches, staggers, jitters and jerks” to describe the yips, which affects some 33-48 percent of all serious golfers, according to Mayo Clinic researchers. Those who have played for more than 25 years appear to be the most prone to the condition. Researchers point to biochemical changes in the brain as one possible culprit, “focal dystonia” (a neurological condition affecting certain muscle groups) as another. Professional golfers are not immune, either. Bernhard Langer, Ben Hogan, Harry Vardon, Sam Snead were among those affected, and even newcomer, Keegan Bradley, who missed a simple 6-inch putt in the final round of the 2013 HP Byron Nelson Championship, may have been suffering from the condition. Golfer and commentator Nick Faldo recently suggested that Tiger Woods may be suffering from the yips as well. Interventions for treating the yips have proven less than fruitful. Changing putters, grips and hand placements on the grip, stances, ball positions at address—all have been tried, and the benefits proven to be temporary at best. My own humble suggestion is to go back to what you did when you were making putts and leave the rest up to scientific experiments. Have fun, play well and enjoy the experience that you are in at the time. And don’t forget to take in the beauty of your surroundings, wherever you are playing. 32

Aficionados of traditional golf (at traditional prices) will find a highly agreeable experience awaiting them at Skywest Golf Course in Hayward. Bob Baldock designed this par-72 municipal course along classic lines when it debuted in 1964. Tree-lined fairways can cause the usual kinds of trouble for errant tee shots, though large greens tend to play true. The par-3s all play long at 140-200 yards, and two lakes insist that you pay them attention on the front and back nines. The three former tee placements (6,789 yards from the back) were recently augmented by a new 5,406, par-73 option from the front. The back 9’s bent grass greens have just been rebuilt to complement the dramatic 6,000 square foot clubhouse that opened in 2005. What hasn't changed are the incredible rates that can get you on the course with a cart for as low as $29 weekdays—with many other specials that can sweeten your day.

TPC Harding Park, named after avid golfer and President Warren Harding, opened in 1925 and is almost as rich in tradition as the Monterey Cypress trees that line it. This challenging-but-always-pleasing course in the lovely and tranquil Capay Valley was established in January 2008 both to enhance the vacation getaway atmosphere for Cache Creek Casino Resort visitors and to provide a unique venue on its very own terms for golf-only enthusiasts drawn up the hill from Sacramento, Wine Country, and the Bay Area. Brad Bell filled the 7,334 yards of oak-studded hills and tall grasses (four other tee placements work down to 5,426 yards) with plentiful bunkers and a picturesque 19-acre irrigation lake that provides plot twists on three holes. Nos. 1 and 18 are gorgeous bookends, the first from a 170-foot elevated tee overlooking the entire course, the last working its way over and around a lake finger to a bunker-filled green. Classic” golf can be defined in many ways, but if your notion includes a landscape uncluttered by surrounding homes, with mountains in almost every direction, under huge skies, on a course whose history includes five PGA Nike Tour events, then Windsor Golf Club is the perfect example. Windsor's 1989 debut helped transform its namesake Sonoma County town from a sleepy rural hamlet into a classy destination that includes an inviting new downtown area built from scratch. An extensive fairway sanding program has now made it a 12-month course, all the better to accommodate the 12-month wine tasting that golfers can pursue almost immediately outside the course boundaries. Although holes 2 and 7 were both consistently ranked among the “Top 10 Most Difficult” on the Nike Tour, the 6,650-yard layout is relatively forgiving. With Charlie's restaurant offering a sophisticated menu and beautiful views from the lakeside patio accompanied by a club that continues to set the standard in Bay Area golf.
