A Good Walk Made Great To be totally transparent, I do not like riding in golf carts.

Perhaps it was the time my young son made a sharp turn that nearly threw me out of our cart and into a patch of lava rocks during a summer round in the Sierras. Or perhaps it’s the golf clubs that remain forever lost to me after I left them behind at the site of my approach shot without a bag nearby in which to deposit them.

Not discovering you’re a club short until later in the round or even days later during another outing is something my cart-riding buddies deal with more often than I. Searching for a club that no longer resides in your bag is a frustrating pursuit. Sound familiar?

There is something comforting about always having my clubs by my side, allowing my creativity (or lack thereof) to dictate what kind of shot to play, rather than having it determined by what clubs I brought with me from the cart.

What strikes me as even more important is the rhythm I achieve when walking from shot to shot. I get a better feel for what my next shot should be while I walk the land and become more familiar with the course I’m playing.

That’s not even to mention the benefits of walking 5+ miles and burning off the calories from the bin of cookies I enjoyed last night.

Now, a good walk can be made great with the right tools. Well-fitted, comfortable golf shoes and clothes are of course essential, but so is the bag that will house your precious clubs. Be sure to read our golf bag review and ask yourself what components are most important to you when you visit the links on foot. The functionality and variety of walking bags is fantastic, and you can happily lower their expense by walking right past the golf cart on your way to the first tee. All the better to then lower your score by staying loose and limber as you traverse the course and enjoy our favorite pastime.

ADOBE CREEK GOLF COURSE PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA Adobe Creek Golf Club is a treasure set against the spacious, rolling hills of southern Sonoma County. The par-72, links-style course measures 6,840 yards from the back tees and 5,039 from the front. Long contoured fairways mingle with a meandering stream, five lakes and 72 bunkers to get every golfer’s competitive juices flowing.

Rimmed by tasteful fairway homes on the front nine, the back nine transitions into an open linksstyle that gives golfers a pleasant array of settings throughout their round. The intriguing name “Beau Pre” becomes even more fascinating when attached to a golf course tucked away in as picturesque and sparsely populated an area as McKinleyville in Humboldt County. Beau Pre means “beautiful meadow” in French, and the golf course bearing its name fits that billing with lush fairways of pine and spruce trees, lovely ponds, and elevated tees to heighten the visual splendor. Water comes into play on nine holes and sand traps are strategically placed throughout the track. “Majestic” is the operative word for this area some 250 miles north of San Francisco. BENNETT VALLEY GOLF COURSE SANTA ROSA, CALIFORNIA Since 1970, golfers have been fortunate to enjoy the game in a particularly scenic part of a beautiful city at Bennett Valley Golf Course in Santa Rosa. This tree-lined municipal course, just minutes from downtown, is surrounded by mountains carpeted with oaks, redwoods, and Monterey pines. Matanzas Creek meanders through four holes, and with no houses lining most of the course, it’s just you and your game, which is aided mightily by solid course conditions. A pleasant mix of long and short holes is abundant along Ben Harmon’s 6,548-yard, par-72 layout. In the early 2000s, every green was upgraded and enlarged to accompany the improved greenside bunkering. A new clubhouse and pro shop opened in 2007, serving as one of the cozier 19th holes in the North Bay. If your outdoor pursuits extend beyond golf, nearby Annadel State Park has long been a mecca for mountain bikers, equestrians, hikers and trail runners. After 45 years of operation, Bennett Valley continues to provide golfers with great golf and one of the best returns on green fee investment in California.

A chat with the man behind the Walking Golfers Society

As the founder of The Walking Golfers Society, can you tell us about the organization’s core function?

The Walking Golfers Society is dedicated to providing information about the many benefits of walking when you golf, which is how the game was intended to be played. The website has walkability ratings (from easy to hard to not permitted) for thousands of courses in the U.S. and Canada. Some of our members also organize events in their area for walking golfers to come together and enjoy the walk, and often a friendly match.

Who and/or what was your main influence for becoming an advocate for walking golfers?

I was fortunate to learn the game from my grandparents in Ireland. I spent many summers golfing and caddying at County Cavan Golf Club, which was absolutely brilliant fun. I also caddied through high school at Rosedale Golf Club in Toronto. Golf for me was always about enjoying the walk with family and/or friends. It is such a great way to spend a few hours together away from the distractions of life while having a really fun time.

“Golf for me, was always about enjoying the walk with family and/or friends” What motivated you to become an advocate and create TWGS? After moving to the U.S., I was rather surprised to see so many people taking carts when they played, even on extremely walkable courses. The idea for The Walking Golfers Society was born from conversations with fellow golfers who really love golf course architecture, which can really only be enjoyed and studied on foot. It was also inspired by the challenge of finding walkable courses that actually permitted golfers to walk, while I was researching vacation destinations. I also wanted to try and illustrate some of the really special golf destinations and courses around the country, such as Bandon Dunes, Ballyneal and Cabot Links in Canada, that are not only world-class but have a walking culture.

What’s the most critical piece of equipment to ensure an enjoyable walk on the links?

There are a couple of elements that make it easier to enjoy the walk. If you want to carry your bag, then finding one that is very comfortable for you is important, whether this is a dual strap bag that allows you to carry 14 clubs or a single strap bag that encourages you to carry fewer clubs to make the walk easier on your body. The invention of very well-designed pushcarts has been fantastic for walking golfers. Pushcarts allow you to take all of the stress off your body while keeping a water bottle, range finder, tees, glove, towel, umbrella, etc. close at hand as you navigate your way around the course. In the UK and Ireland, along with Australia, the majority of golfers still use pullcarts, or electronic pushcarts to enjoy the walk. Those options are also excellent.

Favorite golf destination on the West Coast?

Bandon Dunes for sure. Four world-class courses on one site and an incredible walking culture. While all of the courses are certainly linksy, there are clear differences between Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails and Old Macdonald. Mike Keiser is a genius and his consistent devotion to promoting golf as a walking game is profound.

What course presented the most difficult walk you’ve endured?

The Plantation Course at Kapalua was a tough walk, and there were mandatory shuttles between a few holes because the green-to-tee distances were so far. It’s one of the most fun courses that I’ve ever played, an absolute blast, but certainly not designed for the walking golfer.

For the past 20 years, minimalist architecture has come back in a big way—and walking seems to have accompanied that trend. Do you think public “walking-only” facilities could be sustainable and profitable in larger metropolitan areas?

Absolutely. A public walking-only course with a caddie program, similar to what CommonGround Golf Course near Denver has done, would be sustainable in my opinion.

If you talk to any of the leading golf course architects, they will tell you that it is much easier to build a world-class course if there is no need for cart paths. A really interesting strategic minimalist walking-only course would thrive in many cities where there is a supportive golf culture and climate.

If you could open your own golf course, obviously it would encourage all guests to walk, but where would it be located and who would design it?

My good friend David Mihm and I published an idea many years ago for a walking course in Portland, Oregon. It is a super walkable site with spectacular Mt. Hood and Clackamas River views. We had a leading golf course architect visit the location, and we still believe it would be fantastic if the project comes to fruition one day. The ideal location for an unbelievable course for walking golfers would be close to a major city but along the coast.

Seaside in Oregon is a perfect example, as it is about an hour from downtown Portland and there are some great sand-based sites that exist. There are a host of brilliant architects who could bring such a course to life—Coore & Crenshaw, Tom Doak, Jim Urbina, Gil Hanse, David McLay Kidd, Kyle Phillips, OCCM out of Australia, or Mike Nuzzo, who designed Wolf Pointe in South Texas. The course would have a strong tie to the local community and provide jobs to high school kids via caddie programs and other opportunities. The course would have a strong relationship with The Evans Scholars, and the business model would be closer to what they have in the UK and Ireland than the traditional public or private model that exists in the U.S. I truly believe it would be incredibly successful.

DELAVEAGA GOLF COURSE SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA No one who travels the highways and byways of the Santa Cruz coast soon forgets its magnificent ocean vistas and vast carpets of redwood and pine trees. Mill Valley is a tucked away, tree-enshrouded towns, population 14,000, for which the word “bucolic” seems to have been coined. So it is little wonder that its municipal golf course is a largely unknown jewel, it being further tucked away— like one of the Chinese boxes-within-boxes that so delight children at holiday time—under lush canopies of coastal redwoods and the soft inviting hills of Marin County. The irony is you can get there within minutes off Highway 101, just nine miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. The challenging 9-hole, par-33 layout has six par-4s and the rest par-3. It also contains an ingenious “short course” (par 27), for those still building their game. Built in 1919, the course was upgraded several years ago with revamped greens, a small practice facility, putting green and snack bar.

Club rentals are available, and its “2 for 20” slogan (two hours to play, under 20 bucks) should leave you time and cash aplenty to enjoy the countless other pleasures of this NorCal paradise.

MISSION HILLS OF HAYWARD GOLF COURSE HAYWARD, CALIFORNIA Whether you’re hankering for a quick 9 holes, a bucket of balls or both, Mission Hills of Hayward is an ideal venue to polish every aspect of your game. It performs admirably as both a fine place to introduce new players to the game, and a great resource for solid players looking to refine their skills in a casual setting. The undulating Gary Bye layout is a superior all-weather performer, and a double-decker range lets you swing away till 10 p.m. daily. Mission Hills isn’t a collection of repetitive one-shot holes like you’ll find at many other executive layouts. Instead, it offers features such as three par-4s that range in distance from 271-359 yards. This 18-hole, 6,800-yard Ted Robinson creation has made quite an impact in Bay Area golfing circles since its debut in 1996. Located amidst a thriving active adult community near the Sacramento River Delta, Rio Vista has a slope rating of 127 and water is a prominent feature throughout. Rio Vista’s four par-5s measure 502, 546, 488 and 491 yards, respectively, which allows more casual players a chance to hit greens in regulation and better players an opportunity to give themselves a go at eagle. Add in greens described as “fast and somewhat tricky” by its resident pro and it’s little wonder that the NCGA’s handicapping system identifies Rio Vista as one of the more challenging courses in the Bay Area.

The signature 18th hole is a classic: dogleg into a prevailing wind, bunker protecting the corner, lake fronting the green, waterfalls gracing each side. Pure golfing heaven. And to reaffirm all that, Rio Vista was awarded 4.5 stars by Golf Digest’s “Places to Play.”

Salmon Run Golf Course sits at a kind of metaphorical crossroads, where all the best elements converge for a truly unique golfing getaway. SKYWEST GOLF COURSE HAYWARD, CALIFORNIA Aficionados of traditional golf (at traditional prices) will find a highly agreeable experience awaiting them at Skywest Golf Course in Hayward. Bob Baldock designed this par-72 municipal course along classic lines when it debuted in 1964. Tree-lined fairways can cause the usual kinds of trouble for errant tee shots, though large greens tend to play true and provide a bit of relief for less-than-perfect approach shots.

The par-3s offer a great deal of variety and play between 140-200 yards, and two lakes insist that you pay them attention on the front and back nines. The three former tee placements (6,789 yards from the back) were recently augmented by a new 5,406, par-73 option from the front.

The back 9’s bent grass greens were rebuilt a few years ago to complement the 6,000 square foot clubhouse that opened back in 2005. What hasn’t changed are the incredible rates that can get you on the course with a cart for as low as $29 on weekdays—with many other specials that can sweeten your day.

Numbers 1 and 18 are gorgeous bookends, the first from a 170-foot elevated tee overlooking the entire course, the last working its way over and around a lake finger to a green guarded by some of the fiercest bunkers on the course. These feet were made for walking When you go to Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco, do you just drive through? Isn’t it better to walk down the sidewalk and see the people and smell the seafood and breathe the fresh air?

When you go to Disneyland, do you just ride the monorail? How could you not walk down Main Street and ride the rides and get the most out of the experience?

When you go to Yosemite, do you just drive in and never get out of the car?

Sure, you can see Half Dome through the windshield, but that’s like walking up to the ice cream counter and just looking. And who does that?

So why do you ride a cart on the golf course?

If you have a serious physical limitation that requires you to take a cart if you’re going to be able to play – sorry, but excess weight doesn’t count – you are excused from this discussion.

But if you can walk two blocks, which is about the length of a par-4, then we need to talk about walking the walk.

You have no excuse. You’re just being lazy.

More than two-thirds of Americans are considered overweight or obese. More than two-thirds of golfers ride a cart.

Think it’s just a coincidence?

A normal 18-hole golf course is about a five-mile walk that burns nearly 2,000 calories, according to the World Golf Foundation. Surveys show that people who walk tend to enjoy the game more.

And it’s undeniable that they tend to be healthier.

But we all know what it’s going to take to change the cart culture: It’s going to need to be a group effort.

It starts with individual foursomes. I’ve seen it too many times: Someone goes to the course intending to walk, and a buddy gets a cart and says, “Hey, want to ride?” It’s like offering a candy bar to someone on a diet.

It extends to golf courses. They want people to use carts because they want the revenue. If they really care about their customers, they’ll start making carts a much more expensive decision.

Or how about some incentives to walk, such as a discount after a designated number of rounds of hoofing it?

Let’s stop building golf courses that require a cart and start building golfers who love to walk. Let’s take the first step … and then a lot more.
