After 18 years of publishing Golf Guide in more or less the same format, we have been teeing up some change recently, adjusting our logo, content and approach, not so dissimilar to what us golfers do when playing a round. As our skills either develop, maintain or decline (seemingly in every round of golf!), we come to realize that doing the same thing over and over rarely produces a different, improved result.

Sometimes, the best and most necessary thing to do is to crack open a new sleeve of balls.

We’ve done so again in this issue with a new layout and features that include a new golf resort directory intended to get you started on planning your future golf excursions. The Bay area’s best private clubs for young

ust a few years ago, a survey of private clubs in California found the average age of its members was 67.5 years, blurring the line between country club and senior living community more than ever. With it readily apparent that an infusion of youth would be needed to keep this portion of the industry alive (a segment of the industry that represents a quarter of the golf courses 6 | GOLFGUIDE.NET

In the San Francisco Bay Area, the earning power of twenty and thirtysomethings is the highest it has been in decades. This affluent metropolitan area has led the world in technological innovation for over 20 years, and is not lacking in well-

Seeing the writing on the wall, private clubs across the country, and especially in the Bay Area, began tailoring special memberships that make joining more accessible and affordable for young professionals than ever before.

From an economic standpoint, golfers in their twenties and thirties who play a lot of golf see joining a private club as a way to save money. When I asked a junior executive member at Richmond Country Club why he decided to go private, he answered without hesitation; “I played 120 rounds last year.

After engaging in discussions with various golfers and industry professionals, it became apparent that joining a private club is still a goal for many golfers who are in the beginning stages of their professional careers. Joining a private golf club provides these people with a comfortable and familiar place to recreate and network with established members of their community.

My club membership saved me hundreds, maybe thousands of dollars.” This is possible because some junior executive memberships are so competitive price-wise, that it may just be the best golf deal in Bay Area golf.

How is that possible? It works because junior members often transition into full-fledged members when they’re financially capable, as many of them feel a sense of loyalty to the club that took such good care of them during their youth.

As a publication whose sole purpose is to guide golfers to places where they can maximize their enjoyment of the game, it seemed necessary for Golf Guide to compile a guide to all the Bay Area clubs that the next great generation might consider joining.

Its location makes Green Hills one of the best clubs for residents of both San Francisco and the Silicon Valley, as it bisects the two areas with a club that justifiably revolves around a historic Alister MacKenzie design. Unlike many other high-end private clubs, they’re currently accepting membership applications. Multiple membership types are on offer for young prospective members, including a “Prelude Membership,” in which you have full access to all Green Hill’s facilities for four months, allowing you to sample the good life before committing to a full membership.

Richmond Country Club

Featuring one of the more successful Junior Exec. Programs in the Bay Area, Richmond Country Club is all about the golf, and its proximity to the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge makes it highly accessible to North and East Bay residents. Besides featuring some of the most affordable monthly dues in the Bay Area, Richmond currently has no initiation fee for Junior Executive Members, meaning you simply pay your first month’s dues, then start enjoying full access to all the club’s facilities, including their extensive practice center that features a full practice hole.

The club at ruby hill Of Ruby Hill’s 420 members, 13% of them are 39 or younger, making it one of the most youth-infused clubs in the Bay Area. One of the more intriguing aspects of membership at Ruby Hill is that “Young Professional” members don’t pay the difference in initiation cost when they transition to a full membership-they simply switch to paying normal monthly dues. Add in a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course and the property’s resort-like feel, and you’ve got yourself a nice after-work office.

San jose country club Host of the Santa Clara City Championship for over 80 years, the history of great golf at SJCC continues to evolve. The club has been making some exciting changes to the course, most recently a complete bunker renovation project. ADOBE CREEK GOLF COURSE PETALUMA, CALIFORNIA Adobe Creek Golf Club is a treasure set against the spacious, rolling hills of southern Sonoma County.

The par-72, links-style course measures 6,840 yards from the back tees and 5,039 from the front. Long contoured fairways mingle with a meandering stream, five lakes and 72 bunkers to get every golfer’s competitive juices flowing. Rimmed by tasteful fairway homes on the front nine, the back nine transitions into an open links-style that gives golfers a pleasant array of settings throughout their round. The par-5 fifteenth hole is likely the most memorable three-shotter on the course, as it forces golfers to weigh risk vs. reward from the tee through the green as they navigate strategic placement of trees and a lake that hugs the right side of the hole’s final 240 yards. Don’t Oversell if You Can’t Deliver S

o a friend I’ve never played golf with asked me to join his group in a tournament.

“What’s your handicap?” he asked.

I hesitated.

“Well, I was a 7, but now I guess I’m about a 9 although I probably am playing closer to a 12.”

“Wow!” he responded. “You’ll be the best player in the group by far! Can’t wait to get you out there!”

Uh oh. I was caught in the Big Shot/Big Short dilemma.

The Big Shot is the golfer who constantly oversells and too often under-delivers. You expect to see 300-yard drives and birdies galore, and instead you get wild swings and lots of other ugly things.

The Big Short, like the movie of the same name, is all about misdirection and greed.

This is the sandbagger who knows that a little underselling can lead to getting more cash out of your wallet. Or maybe you’re completely honest and just don’t want any extra pressure. Maybe you play better if little is expected – especially between your own ears.

So which one are you? And how do you deal with that on the golf course?

Me, I try to fall somewhere in between. On the one hand, the last thing I want to do is try to be something I’m not. I’m going to hit some funny-looking shots, and I’ve never met a fairway I couldn’t miss or a hole I couldn’t bogey.

But what I would give to actually be a parshooter or something in that vicinity – and be able to back it up. It’s not for bragging rights; it’s just to be able to say that I accomplished that.

So I’m one of those golfers who want their handicap to be as low as it can be. If I could conquer this game more often than not, it would be life-changing. Seriously. It would be among the greatest things I’ve ever accomplished. It boggles the mind to think about what I would do next.

I keep thinking that a new driver or putter would take five shots off my score. I imagine confidently picking which side of the fairway I want to hit, not just getting a drive somewhere on the short grass. I envision 10-footers rolling smoothly into the cup most of the time. No wonder the equipment companies are thriving.

OK, back to reality. That was fun for a few minutes, but you know what? I love my game the way it is, warts and all. Life sure would be dull if things always worked out just right. The same is true for golf.
