The Insider’s Guide to Morocco
Morocco…Where to go?!
Golf in Morocco with Golf Holidays by Morgan is where exceptional quality meets great value, where vibrant culture and food are an important part of your holiday, and where the level of personal service ensures that you feel most welcome.
Here is your guide on the where and when to go to the marvellous, exotic yet easy-to-get-to Morocco.
Marrakech…Where Golf meets Tradition
Immerse yourself in the vivid colours and rich culture of 1000year-old Marrakech, where ancient history intertwines with modern luxury. Marrakech translates as “the Land of God” in Berber and is known as the "Red City" for its distinctive red walls and buildings. Marrakech offers an enchanting backdrop for unforgettable golf experiences where I rate six of the golf courses very highly indeed and the remaining five on my books as fun to very pleasant.
The flight time from the UK is approximately three hours. You arrive on a warmer continent, cloaked in history. And, with its strong links to France, you can rest assured that the quality of accommodation and food is superb.
Local History
Marrakech is steeped in history and culture, with a rich tapestry of architectural wonders, ancient traditions, and vibrant souks. Visitors can explore the historic Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and wander through its labyrinthine streets lined with colourful markets, artisan workshops and centuries-old palaces. Don't miss iconic landmarks such as the Koutoubia Mosque, Bahia Palace, and Saadian Tombs, which offer fascinating insights into Marrakech's storied past.

Excursions can either be pre-booked with Golf Holidays by Morgan or our on-the-ground partners will be there to assist as much or as little as you want.
Weather
Marrakech enjoys hot summers and mild winters. For golfers, it’s ideal from mid-September through to mid-May and I recommend you tee off early to avoid the afternoon heat from mid-April to early October. Playing early also means you can lounge around the pool or meander through the shaded medina in the afternoon before having a sundowner. Here's a month-by-month breakdown of the weather:
• January: Average high 18°C (64°F), average low 6°C (42°F), occasional rainfall.
• February: Average high 20°C (68°F), average low 8°C (46°F), occasional rainfall.

• May: Average high 28°C (82°F), average low 15°C (59°F), sunny days.

Summary
I’ve been a fan of golf and hospitality in Morocco for over 20 years and I’m delighted that it’s become our fastestgrowing destination. It deserves to be – the people are charming; the quality of the golf courses and accommodation is excellent, and the history and food make the holiday far more interesting than other more “traditional” destinations.
The golf clubhouses in Morocco, like this one at Samanah, are splendid affairs Let
Royal Marrakech Golf Club
Founded in 1927, Royal Golf Marrakech is one of Morocco's oldest and most prestigious golf clubs. The course, designed by Open Champion Arnaud Massy, offers a classic parkland layout with tight, tree-lined fairways, and small, pristine greens. A further nine holes were added in 2007. Think of Royal Marrakech as playing golf whilst walking through a huge and stunning garden. The clubhouse is probably my favourite in the area –with delicious food and wine to match the impeccable style.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,100 yards; Longest –6,500 yards.
• Distance to Marrakech centre: Approximately 4 miles. Amelkis Golf Club
Designed by renowned golf course architect Cabell B. Robinson, Amelkis Golf Club offers three distinct nine-hole courses surrounded by palm groves and desert landscapes. The courses feature massive bunkers, and a few water hazards.
Although quite traditional in design, I would rate Amelkis among the better courses as it’s a very “complete” golf club with excellent maintenance, a great clubhouse and a firm but fair golf course.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,300 yards; Longest –7,400 yards
• Distance to Marrakech Centre: Approximately 5 miles.
Ourika Golf Club
Located in the south of Marrakech and surrounded by olive and palm trees, Palm Golf Marrakech Ourika was conceived and designed as a desert-style landscape with waste bunkers. It’s a fine golf course with stunning views of the Atlas Mountains snowy peaks. Managed by Troon Golf, Ourika also has excellent practice facilities. Buggies required.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,300 yards; Longest –7,400 yards.
• Distance to Marrakech Centre: Approximately 9 miles.
Noria Golf Club
One of the newer courses on the glorious golfing bl of Marrakech is the Arthur Hills & Steve Forrestdesigned course of Noria. Stretching to nearly 7500 yards off the tips, it can be very tough, but play it off the more sensible yellows and it’s about 6700 yards and far more realistic. The course covers a semidesert location of 75 hectares and features four lakes and 85 bunkers. It’s beautifully crafted with the challenges getting tougher as the round progresses. The jury is out regarding the 9th and the 18th with their square greens and parallel fairways, but you can’t deny their fun.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,400 yards; Longest –7,100 yards.
• Distance to Marrakech Centre: Approximately 6 miles.
Samanah Golf Club
A big course in every respect, Samanah was designed by Jack Nicklaus and built for tournament play with perfectly shaped fairways, undulating greens and an intelligent layout, mixing up the challenges with the easy pars. You can open your shoulders on most holes, but you still need to be on your game as approaches are often to large greens and over bunkers or water hazards . Great fun and a super golf course. The clubhouse is large with tasty food served in the restaurant and terrace. Buggy or caddy required.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,700 yards; Longest –7,3000 yards.
• Distance to Marrakech Centre: Approximately 10 miles. Rotana Palmaraie Golf Club
A good holiday golf course on the site of three hotels which make up the impressive Rotana Palmaraie Palace resort with its numerous restaurants, hotel styles and after-dinner attractions. The course has been upgraded over the last couple of years to keep up with the newer courses in the region. It’s a pretty layout with water hazards, generous fairways and super greens. Birdlife is abundant and the views are terrific.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,100 yards; Longest –6,600 yards.
• Distance to Marrakech Centre: Approximately 7 miles.
Assoufid Golf Club
Nestled against the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains, Assoufid Golf Club offers a challenging, yet picturesque course designed by Niall Cameron. Meandering through scenic desert landscapes and verdant olive groves, the course provides stunning views of the surrounding mountains. Impeccably maintained fairways and greens make this course a favourite among golfers seeking both beauty and challenge.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,800 yards; Longest7,100 yards.
• Distance to Marrakech centre: Approximately 9 miles.
Fairmont Royal Palm Golf & Country Club
Set within the prestigious Royal Palm Marrakech resort, the Royal Palm Golf & Country Club boasts a stunning course designed by Cabell Robinson. The 18-hole layout features lush fairways lined with palm trees and water hazards, providing a serene oasis amidst the desert landscape. Golfers can enjoy panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains while navigating the course's strategic challenges. At least one Caddie per tee-time is required but they only cost £16 per round and always help me save a few shots.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,900 yards; Longest7,200 yards.
• Distance to Marrakech centre: Approximately 9 miles.
Al Maaden Golf Club
Designed by Kyle Phillips, Al Maaden Golf Course offers a rather unique golfing experience set against the backdrop of the Atlas Mountains. The championship course features challenging terrain with undulating fairways, water hazards, and strategically placed bunkers. With the ever-present breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape, Al Maaden promises a very pleasant round of golf without being the most difficult course in the region.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,800 yards; Longest7,100 yards.
• Distance to Marrakech centre: Approximately 5 miles.
Montgomerie Marrakech Golf Club
Designed by Colin Montgomerie, Montgomerie Marrakech is a relatively short golf course in an upmarket residential development. It’s very pretty and features lush fairways and strategic bunkering. It’s not my favourite course but it’s decent and provides a break between the more difficult challenges.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,300 yards; Longest –6,900 yards.
• Distance to Marrakech Centre: Approximately 3 miles.

La Sultana Marrakech
My rating 5*
Set within a restored riad in Marrakech's historic Medina, La Sultana Marrakech offers a most romantic setting, opulent accommodations, a great level of service and authentic Moroccan cuisine. With a courtyard pool, rooftop bar and great attention to detail, La Sultana is my favourite small hotel in Marrakech as it combines superior service with the intimacy of a riad.
• Number of Bedrooms: 28 rooms and suites.
• Distance to Marrakech centre: Located in the Medina.
The Oberoi Marrakech
My rating 5*+
The Oberoi brand sets world-class standards for authenticity and its new hotel in Marrakech has been voted No.1 Resort in North Africa and the Middle East by Travel + Leisure magazine.
Set amidst 28 acres of landscaped Mediterranean gardens, The Oberoi Marrakech offers four restaurants but just 84 bedrooms. The bedrooms start at 70m2 and move up to the Deluxe Villa with private pool and then a somewhat over-the-top Presidential Villa.
Oberoi is also famous for its spa and wellness treatments so it’s an ideal choice if some of your party are keener to be “zen” than on the fairways.
• Number of Bedrooms: 84 rooms, suites, and villas.
• Distance to Marrakech centre: Approximately 6 miles.
Riu Tikida Palmeraie
My rating 4*
The Riu Tikida brand is very strong in Morocco and offers the best All Inclusive option in the country. It’s a lively four-star hotel with a focus on leisure and fun. Bedrooms are decent. It’s a great choice for those wanting a golf-intensive, All-Inclusive week while keeping the price very reasonable indeed.
• Number of Bedrooms: 388 rooms and suites.

Park Hyatt Marrakech
My rating 5*
Sitting on Al Maaden golf course, Park Hyatt is a discreet and upmarket five-star resort with bedrooms and suites ranging between 55m2 and 100m2 plus private terrace – all decorated in the detailed and contemporary Park Hyatt style.
The public rooms are luxurious and the service level top-notch. Park Hyatt is one of my favourite hotel brands as it provides plenty of “cool” and comfort without being over-priced.
There are three pools and three restaurants. All beautiful and made even better with the views of the Atlas Mountains and having the fairways of a good golf course just a minute away.
• Number of Bedrooms:130 rooms and suites.

Agadir… Where Golf Meets the Atlantic
Primarily a beach resort destination, Agadir boasts four golf clubs with a total of 108 golf holes. All-Inclusive beach hotels, golf hotels and an increasing number of top-of-therange hotels like the Fairmont and The View are making the region increasingly attractive.
Nestled along Morocco's southern coast, Agadir epitomizes the captivating blend of modern luxury and laid-back charm.
Local History
Agadir's history is as fascinating as its coastline is mesmerizing. Once a bustling port town, Agadir's ancient roots can be explored at the Kasbah Agadir Oufella, offering panoramic views of the city and bay. The city's vibrant culture is showcased at the Souk El Had, where visitors can immerse themselves in the bustling atmosphere of traditional markets. For a glimpse into Agadir's artistic side, the Amazighe Heritage Museum highlights the rich heritage of Morocco's indigenous Berber culture.

Flights from UK to Agadir
Direct flights to Agadir are available from several UK airports including eight in England plus Dublin, Glasgow and Edinburgh.
Summary
Less culture-based and more beach-focused than better-known Marrakech, Agadir is fantastic value and the wave (pardon the pun!) of new hotels is certainly creating new fans. The golf is good without being brilliant. With ideal year-round-weather, I would suggest Agadir as being perfect for that “extra” holiday or if you’re travelling with a group and you need to maximize your budget.
Tazegzout Golf Club
The best course in the region and set against the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean, Tazegzout Golf Club offers a stunning 18-hole course designed by Kyle Phillips. With sweeping views of the coastline and challenging ravine-like terrain, this championship course is the main attraction of Agadir for serious golfers. The “standard” five-star Hyatt Place is on-site, and both are just a threeminute drive from the beaches.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,800 yards; Longest7,200 yards.
• Distance to Agadir centre: Approximately 13 miles.
Dunes Golf Club
Designed by Cabell B. Robinson, Dunes Golf Club comprises three loops of nine. Now over 30 years old, The Dunes is a very pretty layout framed by woodland with plenty of sand and a little bit of water in between. It’s a good course without being great, a tough course without being difficult.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,900 yards; Longest7,100 yards.
• Distance to Agadir centre: Approximately 9 miles.
Soleil Golf Club
Soleil Golf Club sits next to the wonderful Tikida Golf Palace boutique hotel. There are two golf courses – Championship and Tikida – both of which are cut through a forest and part of a 120hectare garden. It’s a beautiful setting. The Championship course is longer and has a couple of daunting water holes but both courses are very enjoyable and make for an enjoyable and lazy golf holiday when staying at the hotel.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,600 yards; Longest7,300 yards.
• Distance to Agadir centre: Approximately 6 miles.
Ocean Golf Club
Adjacent to both Soleil and Dunes, the Ocean is, as the name suggests, next to the Atlantic and is another 27-hole club offering good holiday golf in a very welcoming environment. There are great coastal views too.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,700 yards; Longest – 6,600 yards.
• Distance to Agadir centre: Approximately 5 miles
Tazegzout Golf Club
Soleil Golf Club
Tikida Golf Palace My rating 5*
Nestled amidst lush gardens and overlooking the 36-hole Soleil Golf Club, the Tikida Golf Palace offers luxurious and spacious bedrooms, a super restaurant and excellent spa facilities. It’s the most intimate hotel in the area and my dinner, bed, breakfast and golf packages at this five-star hotel are superb value.
• Number of Bedrooms: 54 rooms and suites.
• Distance to Agadir centre: Approximately 6 miles.
Hyatt Place Taghazout Bay My rating 4*
Situated on the hill overlooking picturesque Taghazout Bay, Hyatt Place Taghazout Bay offers contemporary accommodations, buffet or a la carte dining options and panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. It also sits next to the best golf course in the region – Tazegzout. Although a five-star, expect four-star comfort, service and prices.
• Number of Bedrooms: 152 rooms and suites.
• Distance to Agadir centre: Approximately 12 miles.
Riu Tikida Palace Agadir My rating 4*+
Set on Agadir's golden sandy beach, Riu Tikida Palace Agadir is one of nearly a dozen beachfront resort hotels and one of the closest to the city centre at just two miles. The all-inclusive is comprehensive, the bedrooms spacious and there’s a huge array of leisure activities. Unpretentious and good fun. Being renovated over the winter of 2024/25.
• Number of Bedrooms: 444 rooms and suites.
• Distance to Agadir centre: Approximately 5 miles.
Riu Tikida Palace Taghazout My rating 4*
Right on the beach at Taghazout, this Riu Tikida is newer and larger than its sister hotel at Agadir. The bedrooms are large and there are more swimming pools than I could count, plus the AllInclusive is very generous. The only downside is that you’re a little further from the city of Agadir but Taghazout has long been known as a surfer’s paradise and is fast gaining a reputation for good hotels and an excellent location from which you can explore inland.
• Number of Bedrooms: 553 rooms and suites.
• Distance to Agadir centre: Approximately 11 miles.
Fairmont Taghazout Bay My rating 5*
The world-renowned Fairmont brand leads the way for smart hotels at Taghazout. Set on the Atlantic beach and within the Taghazout Bay resort complex, Fairmont Taghazout Bay offers beautiful bedrooms starting at 50m2 with a partial Ocean View leading up to the huge four-bedroom Ocean View villas with private pool.
The hotel has three restaurants and three bars and plenty of beach activities. Combined with the natural warmth of the Moroccan character, the Fairmont level of service is very much on impressive display.
• Number of Bedrooms: 153 rooms and suites.
• Distance to Agadir centre: Approximately 11 miles.
The View Agadir My rating 4*+
An adults-only hotel, The View opened in spring 2024 and must have the very best location of all the hotels in Agadir – it’s bang on the beach and just a mile from both the city centre and the marina.
Every bedroom has a balcony or terrace and panoramic windows. With 1500m2 spa, four restaurants and evening entertainment, there’s everything you need for a sophisticated stay. Strangely enough, I felt the vibe to be quite Californian.
• Number of Bedrooms: 272 villas and apartments.
• Distance to Agadir centre: Approximately 1 mile.
Riu Tikida Beach My rating Superior 3*
Yet another Riu Tikida in/around Agadir, the Riu Tikida Beach Hotel is the smallest and also a four-star, so the prices are very attractive. Well-located on the Agadir's golden sandy beach, Riu Tikida Beach is All-Inclusive and there’s entertainment in the evenings. Adults-only, this is an easy-going base for your golf and sunshine holiday.
• Number of Bedrooms: 254 rooms and suites.
• Distance to Agadir centre: Approximately 3 miles.
Essaouira…Where Tradition Meets Tranquility
Escape to the UNESCO coastal city of Essaouira, where history, artistic flair and breathtaking landscapes converge. Known for its vibrant medina and windswept beaches, Essaouira offers a unique blend of culture, relaxation and adventure. There’s only one golf course (27 holes) and the destination is small, so I recommend Essaouira as a threenight add-on to your main holiday or a mini-break.
Local History and Tourist Attractions
Essaouira's rich history and artistic heritage are reflected in its UNESCO-listed medina where visitors can wander through narrow alleys lined with whitewashed buildings, vibrant markets, and artisan workshops. Don't miss iconic landmarks such as the Skala de la Ville, a historic fortress offering panoramic views of the city and coastline and the bustling fishing port where colourful boats line the harbour and fresh seafood abounds.
Tourist Attractions and Excursions
• Essaouira Beach: Relax on the pristine sands of Essaouira Beach where gentle waves and ocean breezes provide the perfect backdrop for sunbathing, swimming, and water sports such as windsurfing and kiteboarding.

Weather
Essaouira enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. The temperatures are consistent throughout the year so think of Essaouira whenever you fancy a warm and cultural break with a spot of golf. Here's a month-by-month breakdown of the weather:
• January: Average high 19°C (66°F), average low 11°C (52°F), occasional rainfall.
• February: Average high 19°C (66°F), average low 11°C (52°F), minimal rainfall.

Flights from UK to Marrakech
Direct flights to Essaouira are available from London Stansted or you can fly into Marrakech which has a far more comprehensive flight schedule. Marrakech to Essaouira is a drive of under three hours and I can arrange private transfers for you.
Summary
Definitely a “holiday with golf” rather than a true golf destination, come to Essaouira with your loved ones and enjoy a few days dipping into the culture, colours and delicious foods.
Mogador Essaouira Golf Club
Designed by Gary Player, the Mogador Essaouira Golf Club offers a challenging 18-hole course surrounded by stunning landscapes and ocean views. With its rolling fairways with some raised tees so you’re hitting down onto a tree-lined fairway and links-like holes nearer the ocean, the course provides an exhilarating golfing experience for players of all levels.
Mogador confirms that Gary Player is my favourite modern golf designer as his courses are visually appealing and encourage aggressive play without over-penalizing a slightly poor shot.
• Yardages: Shortest – 4,500 yards; Longest - 7,200 yards.
• Distance to Essaouira centre: Approximately 5 miles.
Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa
My rating 4*+
Nestled amidst a massive and lush garden estate overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Sofitel Essaouira Mogador Golf & Spa offers ultra-funky accommodation and style as well as direct access to the Mogador Essaouira Golf Club. A very ecologically oriented resort, it’s also one of the trendiest golf hotels I know. It’s where 21st-century design meets our classic game. There are plenty of leisure facilities too so you can play some golf, enjoy the hotel and dip into the wonderful town in the evening.
• Number of Bedrooms: 175 rooms and suites.
• Distance to Essaouira centre: Approximately 5 miles.
Atlas Essaouira & Spa
My rating 4*
A striking hotel, it’s not the prettiest, the Atlas Essaouira & Spa offers comfortable bedrooms, a perfect location and terrific value. The hotel is on the seafront, boasts a private beach and is just a stroll from the centre of the ancient city.
Bedrooms are reasonably sized at 30m2 but I would suggest upgrading to the slightly larger Ocean View Deluxe category. The main restaurant in the hotel is boosted by the beach bar and restaurant. All told it’s a comfortable base and very good value.
• Number of Bedrooms: 156 rooms and suites.
• Distance to Essaouira centre: Central location
Heure Bleue Palais My rating 5*

Royal Dar Es Salam Golf Club
Voted as the best golf in Morocco and the third best in Africa, Royal Dar Es Salam was commissioned by King Hassan II and designed by Robert Trent Jones Snr in the 1960’s, so it comes with a huge pedigree.
There are 45 holes of rather immaculate golf – the Red leads the way and has hosted the European Tour on many occasions, the Blue is another joy and the Green is ideal for after lunch. All cut through gorgeous woodland with perfect bunkering and large, contoured greens.
A very special golf club. Caddes (£20 per round) are obligatory.

• Distance to Rabat Centre: Approximately 7 miles.
Montgomerie Rabat Golf Club
Colin Montgomerie seems to focus on golf real estate projects and he’s designed an 8000-yard monster here (presumably so that they can fit more houses along the fairways!). It’s wide and it’s fun holiday golf.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,490 yards; Longest –8,000 yards.
• Distance to Rabat Centre: Approximately 14 miles.
Bahia Beach Golf Club
Nestled along the picturesque Bouznika Bay 29 miles south of Rabat, this hidden gem designed by Cabell Robinson covers two almost-circular loops of nine holes so you’re constantly having to think of the changing wind directions. It’s an extremely picturesque journey through manicured fairways and to the sound of rolling waves. The views of the Atlantic are almost constant, and the maintenance is good. A fine golf course worth playing a few times…Think about staying at the on-site and fivestar wellness hotel The View

Four Seasons Rabat at Kasr Al Bahr My rating 5*
The world-renowned hotel brand opens in Rabat in June 2024 in a beautiful 18th-century royal residence. This is truly a “Palace by the Sea” with gardens to match.
With 12 types of bedroom starting at 44m2 working upwards to the ethereal Suites and Riads, it’s looking mightily impressive. There are three restaurants, Lobby Lounge and two bars. The stunning spa is in the Palace gardens.
Wonderfully located with just the coastal road between the front doors and Atlantic and the smartest parts of the city within walking distance, the world’s most respected hotel brand is making Rabat more attractive than ever.

Fairmont Marina Hotel My rating 5*+
The Fairmont Marina Hotel stands to the north of the city and on the beautiful Bouregreg riverbank. Boasting panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the historic city skyline, this top-quality certainly provides what you expect from the prestigious Fairmont brand.

Mostly focused on those seeking wellness and rejuvenation, the View is also adjacent to the really good Bouznika Bay golf course. Overlooking the Atlantic, this five-star hotel combines the trendy vibe of The View hotels with the natural splendour of Morocco's coastline.
From invigorating hydrotherapy sessions to soothing massages using mineral-rich products, each experience is tailored to promote holistic well-being and rejuvenation. Thankfully, the hotel's culinary offerings also cater for the less-abstemious of us with Mediterranean-inspired dishes with panoramic views of the bay.

Casablanca…Where Culture Meets Coastline
Discover the vibrant energy and coastal beauty of the Casablanca region where bustling cities, historic landmarks and pristine beaches await. Built with the financial aid of the Spanish in the late 18th-Century to be a business hub of the Middle East & African region, Casablanca (White House in Spanish) is mistakenly thought by some to also be the capital of Morocco. It’s the richest city in the country but Rabat is the modern capital (since 1955) and Fes was the capital for over a thousand years before that.
From the iconic cityscape of Casablanca to the ancient treasures of El Jadida and the luxurious retreat of Mazagan Beach Resort, this region offers a diverse array of experiences for every traveller.
Local History
The Casablanca region is steeped in history and culture, with a wealth of attractions waiting to be explored. Visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of Casablanca's bustling medina, stroll along the scenic Corniche and marvel at architectural landmarks such as the Hassan II Mosque, one of the largest mosques in the world. In El Jadida, UNESCO-listed sites such as the Portuguese Cistern and the historic ramparts offer a glimpse into the region's colonial past.
Casablanca is Morocco’s largest city and tourism is not as important as in other parts of this colourful country. You need to either head straight to our expert choice of hotels or, to get the best out of a stay in the city itself, you need to make some extra effort to discover its hidden details. And yes, Rick’s Café does exist (the bar in the 1942 film Casablanca was fictional) – the real one was built about 20 years ago and it looks just like the bar in the film – there’s live music, good food and plenty of music and I think Bogart and Bacall would be pleased
Tourist Attractions and Excursions
• Hassan II Mosque: Explore the architectural masterpiece of the Hassan II Mosque with its intricate mosaics, towering minaret and stunning oceanfront location. Guided tours allow visitors to learn about the mosque's history, architecture and cultural significance.
• Old Medina of Casablanca: Wander through the labyrinthine streets of Casablanca's Old Medina, where traditional markets, historic landmarks and local artisans offer a glimpse into daily life in Morocco. Visitors can shop for souvenirs, sample local delicacies, and experience the vibrant atmosphere of this historic quarter.
• El Jadida's Portuguese Cistern: Descend into the underground chambers of El Jadida's Portuguese Cistern; a remarkable feat of medieval engineering. Built in the 16th- century to store water for the city, the cistern features vaulted ceilings, slender columns, and atmospheric lighting, creating a mesmerizing underground oasis.

I’ve had many great matches at Mazagan. Designed by Gary Player, it’s rated among the very best in Africa
Flights from UK to Casablanca
Direct flights to Casablanca are available from London Heathrow, London Gatwick and Manchester throughout the year. The flight takes just over 3 hours.
Summary
Vibrant and more business-oriented than my other destinations in Morocco, I’ve carefully selected the hotels for their proximity to the very best parts of the Casablanca region. Six of the golf courses in the area are really good and the other three I offer are certainly good enough for a game. The weather is super all year round and access is easy from London.
Stay in the city if you’re looking for a busy time day and night, head to the coastal resort for a more traditional holiday with golf and pristine beaches or mix the two to get the very best out of your holiday experience.
With state-of-the-art buildings like the USA Embassy above, Casablanca blends financial wealth with tradition – such as the souk below
Mazagan Golf Club
Designed by Gary Player, Mazagan Golf Club is a true championship course. It’s rated 11th best in Africa. Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the fairways are wide and with wonderfully tight grass, the greens and the approaches to them take some getting used to. If you chip like Seve did and putt the Scheffer does, you’ll be ok! If you’re human, just enjoy the challenge. It’s an excellent golf course and I’ve sent many a good golfer to play there all week long. Adjacent to the five-star mega Mazagan Beach Resort.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,800 yards; Longest7,200 yards.
• Distance to Casablanca City: Approximately 60 miles.
El Jadida Royal Golf Club
I first played El Jadida about 15 years ago and it was fun but tired. It then closed for two years to be remodelled and is now rated in the top 10 of Morocco. It’s a tight, pretty course with small greens so is tricky but playable for most golfers. The golf course is located just outside Mazagan Beach Resort and en-route to El Jadida.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,700 yards; Longest7,000 yards.
• Distance to Casablanca City: Approximately 60 miles.
Tony Jacklin Signature Golf Club
A few miles inland from Casablanca, the Tony Jacklin course is part of the Bouskoura Golf City residential project. It’s a decent track on 200 hectares surrounding 20ha of real estate. There are a few lakes but the fairways are wide and flat (but nicely framed) and there are not too many “in play” bunkers, so you should score well.
• Yardages: Shortest - 4,800 yards; Longest6,900 yards.
• Distance to Casablanca City: Approximately 12 miles.
Casa Green Golf Club
This 10-year-old course is maturing into a good layout. Designed by Jeremy Pern, it’s American in look and feel and has quite intimating lakes on four consecutive holes around the turn. Well-kept and with a huge clubhouse, it’s well worth playing when staying in the city.
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,600 yards; Longest7,100 yards.
• Distance to Casablanca City: 12 miles.
Royal Anfa Mohammedia Golf Club
Step back in time at Mohammedia Royal Golf Club; a distinguished destination full of history and tradition. Founded in 1927 under the patronage of King Mohammed V, this course has hosted golfing royalty.
Designed by French professional Pierre Hirogoyen (I knew his son and am good friends with his grandson – both natural and beautiful players) the18-hole layout is simple, uncomplicated and sits bang on the Atlantic beaches. It’s a lovely day of holiday golf where you should beat your Handicap.
I like playing here for its yesteryear layout and simplicity. Plus, the lunch is excellent!
• Yardages: Shortest - 5,000 yards; Longest –6,700 yards.
• Distance from the centre of Rabat: Approximately 28 miles.
Sofitel Casablanca Tour Blanche My rating 4*+
Located in the heart of Casablanca overlooking the marina and Hassan II Mosque, Sofitel Casablanca Tour Blanche is the second tallest building in the city and is popular with the wellheeled locals. There’s a rooftop bar, and French and Moroccan restaurant. I would always recommend upgrading to the 35m2 Luxury bedroom with the unique view of the Medina, the ocean, and the Hassan II Mosque.
The Sofitel is a smart base from which to head to the golf courses (with our private transfers) and come back to a destination with the best of Casablanca at its feet.
• Number of Bedrooms: 171 rooms and suites.
• Distance to Casablanca City centre: Central location.
Casa Diamond Suite My rating 4*
An all-suite hotel, the Casa Diamond is super practical and cracking value for an unpretentious stay where you’re keen on a great apres-golf location. Officially a five-star, expect four-star comfort and service. A stay here is all about convenience and good comfort but not a luxury experience. The bedrooms start at 48m2
• Number of Bedrooms: 120 suites
• Distance to Casablanca City centre: Central location.
Movenpick Hotel Casablanca
My rating 4*+
Set in the heart of Casablanca's business district, Movenpick Hotel Casablanca is a contemporary and five-star hotel, also close to the medina. I like the Movenpick brand as it’s smart but casual, decent quality and good value. I rate the bedrooms at their Casablanca hotel as four-star – they’re fresh but lack the finesse and size of a true five-star bedroom.
The hotel has a restaurant, café, bar and rooftop bar/deck.
• Number of Bedrooms: 184 rooms and suites.
• Distance to Casablanca City centre: Central location.
Focus on Mazagan Beach Resort My rating 5*
Spread across 250 hectares of pristine Atlantic Ocean beach frontage, Mazagan is one of the most comprehensive resorts I’ve visited anywhere – and certainly the best equipped in Africa.
Gary Player golf course, restaurants (up to 10) and bars galore, casino, bars, Anis Café for those sugar-sweet moments, the freedom of the All-Inclusive option, karting track, huge beach, massive swimming pools, horse-riding, water sports and tennis centre. Children are spoilt too with paintballing, climbing, trampolining and Kids Clubs for several ages. And let’s not forget the superb spa.
Enjoy the Gary Player golf is deservedly rated among the very best in Africa and I’m always excited whenever I’m heading there despite not yet being able to master the slippery greens. The practice facilities are good, so you’ll get your game sorted soon enough.
Choose from nearly 500 bedrooms, suites and villas; each meticulously designed to reflect Moroccan elegance and modern comfort. Bedroom sizes start at 42m and Family Rooms come in at 86m2 so you’re together but still have plenty of space. And for couples who want the best of views and even better service, ask me about the 82m2 Ocean View Mazagan Suite bedroom category.
With two buffet restaurants, four outdoor eateries, four indoor affairs and up to three bars/cafes, your tastebuds will be kept busy. My favourite restaurants at Mazagan are the seafood at Sel de Mer and, when I’m ravenous, the Olives worldwide buffet affair. The Mazagan All Inclusive is excellent value for golfing groups with its breakfast, lunch, dinner, and lunchtime and evening drinks plus Unlimited Golf included.
And between all the playing and eating? There’s the sunshine and 7km private beach of course! The leading resort in Africa, Mazagan Beach Resort would impress wherever it was in the world.
