As we look ahead, we want you to feel inspired. It’s important that, during these times, we stay as active as possible while doing so in a safe and responsible manner. Today, golf is one of the safest activities - it’s beneficial to both our physical and mental well-being, which is crucial to maintaining a healthy immune system. I
For Your Next Golf Vacation
and a buddy had the pleasure of visiting Ocean City, Maryland for the first time recently. Our first round of golf was at Lighthouse Sound Golf Course, which is a short drive across the bay from Ocean City. LHSGC is the only course in the United States that has consecutive holes that feature a double green (holes 3 and 4). Hole number five, which is a scenic par-three overlooking the OC skyline, plays a challenging 190 yards from the tips. I was able to hit my 7-wood to the back fringe and get up and down for par. Thank you very much! The course also features the world’s longest cart bridge between holes 8 and 9. Measuring in at 1,500 feet, the bridge offers amazing views of the marsh areas surrounding the course. LHSGC is really two different 9-hole tracts. The front nine is links style golf, with very few trees and majestic views of the bay while the back nine is more wooded and narrower fairways. Five sets of tees are available for players of all skill levels On day two we teed it up at Eagles Landing Country Club. Despite wind gusts in excess of 40 miles an hour, the deep blue skies made our round much more enjoyable. One of our favorite holes was the 528 yard
par-five 7th. The hole features water down the entire left side of the fairway. Two well placed shots will leave you with a short iron into an ample green that is protected front and back by marshland. After the round, and a quick nap back at the hotel, we made the short drive to the Ocean City Casino. While small in comparison to our casinos back home in Connecticut (Foxwoods and Mohegan) we found the staff friendly and the facility well lit and clean. The casino is mainly slots but table games have been added recently for the gambling itch in you. They also offer a harness racing track in-season. We both left with our wallets a little lighter then when we walked in but both agreed that it was an enjoyable night out.
Heading back to Connecticut on Day Four, we booked a tee time at Baywood Greens Golf Club which is around 30 miles north of Ocean City. Locals call it “the Augusta of the North” and they are spot on. We were told by the staff that it takes 30 employees just to maintain the flower gardens on the property. Every hole is unique and challenging. One particular hole that stands out is the 14th. It is a par-four that features an island fairway. I said that right, an island fairway. Try your skill (or luck) to shorten the hole or take the long way around, like I did, and play it as a long dogleg left. I bogeyed the hole, playing my second shot in from 176 yards, while my buddy played his tee shot to the island fairway and had a short wedge into the large green. He walked off smiling with an easy par. If you have never been to the area, take a look at Ocean City Golf at www.oceancitygolf.com. iken, recently named to Southern Living’s top 5 best small towns; Aiken has lots to offer. Only 20 minutes from Augusta, GA. And every April you can almost hear the roars from Amen Corner. Local shopping, beautiful gardens and Aiken’s 2100 acre - Hitchcock Woods, an urban forest waiting for your exploration. All that have attended Great Escapes in the past, you know we put the priority on golf, experiences and food, and Aiken easily has what we are looking for! The area is known as Thoroughbred Country and for good reason. The climate is suitable for year-round training and equestrian events. Follow the canopy of huge live oaks down South Boundary Ave. to many of the training facilities in town. Most of the surface streets around the stables have remained dirt/ clay, so, you will often find a rider nearby. Golf will include - Aiken Golf Club founded in 1912. John Inglis became the head professional in 1915. Mr. Inglis worked with the original designer of Shinnecock Hills and Donald Ross in New York. Through the years the club has seen changes; the current owner James McNair, Sr. As the club says, the “Ross” was brought back to the Aiken Golf Club in 2012 when Jim’s son James McNair Jr. was declared a designer and updated the course in its centennial year. The River Golf Club -this Jim Fazio design is across the Savannah River from Downtown Augusta in North Augusta, South Carolina. Set along the river there are wetlands and lakes throughout the course; then Fazio adds the
The River Club bunkers.. Greens are large and fast. Number 17 is a relatively short par 3 that looks back into the downtown Augusta skyline..fun to make birdie there. Mount Vintage Golf Club - a 27 hole Tom Jackson design, rolling hills, picturesque holes, stonework bridges help define this club. Every hole on this course you can stand on the tee box or look back down the fairway from the green and have a memorable mental picture or better yet, take a picture to show your friends that didn’t come with you, what they missed. Experiences and food during the fall months in Aiken are a plenty! Annual events include: Mane and Shell, The Chocolate Festival, Aiken Fall Steeple Chase or catch one of the Aiken Polo Matches. The course has been highly praised and is regularly rated as number two course in Georgia, second only to famed Augusta National. But after a quarter-century, RLO asked original designer Jack Nicklaus to come back and oversee a renovation and a re-imagining of his masterpiece. “The first time I went to Reynolds, I knew we had the potential to have a great golf course,” Nicklaus said. “I think we found it then, and now more than a quarter of a century later, a wonderful golf experience remains but was in need of a little updating. It’s one of the really great pieces of property with which I have ever had the experience to work.” Nicklaus and his team are “doing something to every hole” on the golf course. “For example, the ninth hole, which I thought for some golfers was a little awkward, will still play down a hill and over water, but it’s got a little more room now for the average golfer to play. Back up one
hole to the 8th, and that par-three was totally redone. We’ve made it much better by designing a brand-new hole.” Nicklaus said, “We now can see the lake off the tee on the 11th, where before we could never see the water. We took a bunker out on 12, so golfers will have a little more generous of a fairway to play. It is still a forced carry over water, but you don’t have to carry a bunker, too. At 13, we took the green back to the water, rather than leaving it away from the water. At 18. I built a bigger tee to make it more forgiving on the second shot. The membership also wanted to add some definition off the tee, so bunkers were added.” While Nicklaus adjusted some of the strategy in playing the course, it isn’t to a significant degree. “Great Waters is probably a
little more user-friendly than it was. Generally, that’s one of the things we try to do--provide a little more turf in areas where turf is needed, a little less sand in areas where you need less sand, a little more bail-out area where you need bail-out. evin Osgood, Founder & President of Sterling Golf Management based in Newton, Ma., came into the business as a golf course superintendent in 1980. Originally from New Hampshire, he has worked all his life on golf courses in New England. “I started a Golf Course Management Company 27 years ago because I always loved my profession, the game, the golf business, understood what the golfer wants, could assist properties with improvements and knew how to run a business, therefore I stepped forward.” Osgood’s first course was Newton Commonwealth Golf Course, where he was already serving as the Head Superintendent. “Massachusetts Chapter 31B bid laws were changing that would require municipal properties to be put out a contract to public bid, including golf courses. My first step was to incorporate a business that denoted quality, so in 1993 Sterling Golf Management, Inc. was established and that allowed me to be one of the bidders and SGM received the management contract.” At the time, Newton Commonwealth (opened in 1897) needed more operational efficiency and an improvement in the overall management of the course. Osgood saw an opportunity to improve customer service, cleanliness, food service and a higher quality, better stocked pro shop operation. Today, twenty-six years later, Sterling Golf Management owns two courses and operates 10 public golf courses total, the majority in the surrounding Boston area. Chippanee Country Club
C
hippanee Country Club in Bristol, Ct. is a full-service country club, with a superb golf course, extensive tennis and pool facilities, and a first-rate restaurant. The pool area and snack bar are family favorites, and the tennis facility and programs are extensive. Although the course plays to a par-70 from the blue tees (a modest 6,310 yards), Chippanee has small, challenging greens and tight narrow fairways. The course has several sets of tees, and its first nine opened for play in 1929 with a second nine added during the 1990’s. Nonesuch River Golf Club, in Scarborough, was designed by Tom Walker, who was a longtime course architect with Gary Player Design. The extremely scenic, par-70 Nonesuch River layout, while not long, asks for thoughtful shots off the tee and on shots to the greens. Proper club selection is important, as is the ability to chip and putt around and on the greens. There are four sets of tee at Nonesuch that provide for a variety of playing experiences and fun for all golfers depending upon which set of tees they choose to play.
Auburn’s Fox Ridge Golf Club, which Golf Digest has rated a top 10 course in Maine, public or private, plays to a par of 72. Again, the parfives are a strength here, and you will find as good a par-three as you will encounter; the fifth hole. Fox Ridge has undergone significant course projects to improve playability, such as tree work and cutting back of brush and tall grass. Fox Ridge has by far the least expensive greens fees of any top 10 course in Maine and is very accessible off Route 95 in Lewiston. Bridgton Highlands Golf and Tennis in Bridgton is an enjoyable and historic course with great mountain views located in the heart of Maine’s Lakes Region in southwestern Maine, only one hour from Portland and 20 miles from the New Hampshire border. The nine-hole course is the only original A.W. Tillinghast design in northern New England. The original nine was built in 1926 and the course was expanded to 18 holes in 1992. There are four sets of tees.

Stay Level During The Golf Swing By George Connor So many golfers struggle with the overwhelming desire to move the club down to the ball and never realize that their job is to move the club forward. The result is a lot of upper body action that gets the club to take a steep downward attack often hitting the ground too soon (a fat shot) and in the best case hitting the ball solid but with a trajectory that is much lower than desired. Almost daily I will have conversations with students to explain that as the golfer they should put more focus on the forward movement of the club rather than the downward movement. This generally means that the forward swing involves more rotation than exertion from the upper body. The video will explain a simple drill that we can use in order to get the feeling of staying at one level during the golf swing. Simply tee a ball nice and high at the range. Do Not set up to the ground, rather set-up to the ball. Meaning the club at address is hovering above the ground. Now simply make a swing. If you stay at the same level during the swing you can strike the ball nice and solid. If you are one to go diving down for the ball the feedback will be obvious. Give it a try!

How to Practice Block vs Random Practice There are two general ways to practice – they are equally important but serve different purposes. You can, and should, use each method of practice in your development as a complete golfer. Block Practice – The golf swing is an athletic motor skill that is learned and developed (habituated) through repetition. Generally, this takes place from a normal lie, many repetitions with a particular club to a specified target. In block practice you are working on developing correct positions and sequencing. This type of practice doesn’t necessarily make perfect, it makes permanent so make sure you are practicing the right things. When tour players are block practicing, they have alignment rods on the ground and usually a coach guiding and confirming their intentions, you should too. Block practice is about technique. Random Practice – Most amateurs neglect this practice style with is why they have trouble transferring their game from the range to the golf course. With random practice you can hit to different targets from shot to shot. Another technique is to hit to a single target but in a variety of different ways – high, low, fade, straight, draw and even with different clubs. You can also play holes or rounds by playing the appropriate tee shot, estimate your second shot and play it…all the way through the hole 36

or round. Practice hitting from different lies – uphill, downhill, sidehill, bare, different lengths of rough and even out of divots. When practicing greenside approach shots take a handful of balls, toss them around the green and play them from the lie they end up in to different targets with different clubs…take it one step further and putt them out. Play games and compete with yourself and others. Climb the ladder by hitting a series of wedges adding 10 yards to each one until you reach your full wedge length then bring it back taking 10 yards off each and repeat. Use your imagination and play all the shots you might encounter on the course, play them with intention and use your pre-shot routine. You will become more comfortable and confident when you face those shots on the course. Random practice is about execution.

Reset Expectations For Better Golf Experiences Hopefully by now the golf courses in your state are open and eagerly await your arrival. What an opportunity to press your own reset button to create a positive experience. We all have felt the anticipation of shooting great rounds as new Spring seasons lure us back. But this time it’s different. What will your expectations be? Of course, you will have a legitimate excuse to shoot a million. The shelter in place protocols of the last month surely have created more “rust” in your game than ever before. With all practice facilities closed, many courses will initially turn into “park and play” opportunities. You’ll arrive with just enough time to grab your clubs, walk straight to the first tee, put a peg in the ground and BOOM. Working on golf drills and pounding balls will have to wait until the practice facilities open again. You won’t be alone in shooting higher than normal scores! So, what can you do, regardless of your score, to enjoy the game more this year? First, adjust expectations. Golf can be a cruel game, pushing us towards frustration with every missed shot. Know that the scores of even the best Tour players in the world fluctuate. Justin Thomas won 5 times in 2017. But he missed 6 cuts. His highest and lowest score differed by 21 shots!! Golf is a game with inconsistency built in. Bad stuff happens! Covid-19 has given us the chance to put that in a totally new perspective. Make new choices. Lose the anger and ALL negative self-talk.
The Pre-Shot Routine The third principle in Mr. Palmer’s Method is Course Strategy and pre-shot routine is a part of that process. Pre-shot routines are different from person to person, so choosing a strategy that fits both your golfing ability and your playing personality is key to success. If you turn on your television in the afternoon on the weekend and watch the Senior PGA, the LPGA or the PGA Tour, you will notice that all of the good golfers have a pre- shot routine. What is a pre-shot routine and why do it? A pre-shot routine is something you do that prepares you for the golf shot you are about to hit. It can be anything from taking two practice swings to feel and see the shot, aligning your target to your golf ball utilizing your club’s shaft and then stepping into the setup, or giving the club a waggle before you pull the trigger. Learn the difference between taking a risk versus a gamble and how to play golf shots versus thinking swing mechanics. Whatever it is, it should be done con-

Monitor your reactions by putting a rubber band around your wrist. Every time you feel those negative reactions brewing, SNAP the band on your wrist. Be kinder to yourself when you play, especially on days when your score is higher than your expectation. Remember, 21 shots!! Covid-19 has shaken us to the core. We have the opportunity to fall in love with golf again. Modify your expectations for a while. Hopefully, your first day back will be a warm, sunny day. Notice the beauty, the sounds of the birds, the smell of Spring. In other words, come to your senses! Eventually, the lesson tees will be open for business. Take a lesson from your PGA or LPGA Professional and you’ll get back on track faster. In the meantime, let’s be grateful to be outdoors! Choose that new mindset. Attitude affects outcome.

Manage Your Way To Lower Scores By Jimmy Damiano, PGA What do all avid golfers have in common? We all have the desire to shoot lower scores and to have more fun! But how do we go about doing that? The simple answer is better management. Management of what? Having coached golfers of all skill levels for over 20 years has enabled me to create a template for lowering my athletes’ scores. Manage these three areas well and you, too, will shoot lower scores: 1). MANAGE the appropriate expectation levels: Almost every student I coach needs to lower their expectations at some point. One thing I often remind my players is that golf is a challenging sport for PGA and LPGA Tour professionals and these are golfers that practice and play six days a week. So, if you are a club golfer and play on the weekends then you need to have an entirely different outlook on your expectation level, especially if you have not spent a great deal of time sharpening your edges over the last several weeks or months. I find that students often become frustrated when they don’t meet the high expectations they have set for themselves. These high expectations usually stem from successful careers in business or in prior sports endeavors. My honest advice, keep your expectations low! 2). MANAGE your ability to hit the green from inside one hundred yards with one try: Managing this area of your game is where the real work begins. Coaching club golfers has inspired me to come up with my own GIR (greens in regulation) stat. I call it “Greens in Regulation Plus One.” The real meaning behind it is quite simple. If you can hit your golf ball on the green in three strokes (on a par four) you will be putting for a par. Putting yourself into a position to hit the green in regulation Plus One is most often a result of good course management. Sometimes making the decision to hit a short iron instead a fairway wood on the second shot is difficult. Jim McLean taught me a strategy many years ago, the divide by two theory. When faced with more than a few hundred yards for a second shot, club players should divide their distance to the green by two. For example, a 230 yard approach becomes two 115 yard shots. Play the higher percentage shot! Now comes the fun part. We need to be savvy when executing a variety of approach shots from inside 100 yards. These shots include green side bunkers blasts, shots along the ground that run, and shots that go up in the air and stop. This is an area of the game that my players are required to practice and keep sharp. It is important that they can not only make solid contact but have a good idea of what club and what swing length or swing speed they need from different yardages. I suggest spending some time with your laser and the following clubs: LW, SW, GW, PW, 9 iron. Most shots inside 100 yards are going to be less than full swings. Give yourself a matrix of 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or 7:00, 9:00, 11:00 swing lengths. Each of those clubs provides different carry and roll out distances based on the loft. Can you see why being prepared from inside 100 yards can pay big dividends? 3). MANAGE your putting skills: Distance Control/ 3 Putt Avoidance: Last but certainly not least is the ability to manage your putting skills. When it comes to putting and shooting lower scores the biggest key by far is the avoidance of three putts! To do this a golfer needs to be efficient in two areas, controlling the distance of his/her ball on lag putts and capitalizing on putts inside of six feet. Proficiency in the above skill sets will help with three putt avoidance. When you factor in the importance of being an efficient putter combined with being skilled from 100 yards and in you realize the relevance of managing the above areas as well as your practice time! Wentworth Hills Country Club
e know golfing is fun. The ownership at Wentworth Hills Country Club in Plainville, Ma. is intent on making it even more enjoyable. The club has purchased a new fleet of “Shark” golf carts that allows players to remain in contact with the clubhouse throughout a round. They can order food and refreshments while playing the front nine and pick up orders at the turn. In addition, the carts offer yardages and golfers can even watch video tips from Greg Norman between their own shots. The club has a unique “challenge” that gets golfers who ante up $5 or $10 on top of their greens fees a shot at a $10,000 or $20,000 prize if they make a hole-in-one on the par-three 17th hole. And, the club has developed an app for cell phones that make the user a member of the “Wentworth Hills community” once they get the app. Individuals are notified of discounts on greens fees and other promotions and specials. A map of the course and yardages are automatically available on the user’s phone when accessing the app. ”We are trying to keep up with the younger generation that is so into technology,” said one of the club’s owners, Constant Poholek. “The hole-in-one challenge is a game within the game and money we receive helps out charitable causes. We are trying to do things to make golf even more fun and keep people coming back.” The club also continues its popular “cigar nights” where players get a round of nine holes, a cigar and dinner for a

Wentworth Hills is a fun course to play, offering classic risk/reward holes that dare low-handicappers to “go for it,” while allowing for alternate routes to the green for less experienced golfers. The varied natural topography here features rolling, tree-lined fairways, large, receptive greens, ponds and lakes protecting holes, and 60 strategically-placed bunkers. The course, while playing just over 6,200 yards from the tips, has a slope of 128 and a rating equal to its par of 71. The track places emphasis on proper club selection and accurate approach shots to the putting surfaces. Wentworth Hills is located between Boston and Providence and only minutes from Route 495, which makes it an ideal destination for golfers from the Metro Boston area to Federal Hill in Providence. Heather Hill County Club
ith 27 holes of golf, Heather Hill Country Club in Plainville, Ma., makes for a full day of golfing fun. The club offers one regulation 18-hole course and one nine-hole course. The North Course (nine holes) has a few hills that can cause uneven lies. The fairways are narrow, and the greens are small. The South Course (18 holes) has many more hills than the North Course, but doesn’t have a lot of sand bunkers. The fairways are wide open, but most are tree lined, so you just can’t spray it around and get away with it. The greens are large, and water hazards come into play on three holes. The 18-hole course plays around 6,000 yards from the tips and has a mix of short- and medium-length par-fours, tricky par-threes, and two par-fives that can reached in two shots by big hitters. One of those par-fives is the 478-yard third that is very straightforward with few hazards complicating matters, although there are two bunkers near the putting surface. The seventh and eighth are solid backto-back par-threes, playing almost 200 yards and 180 respectively. The back side has three short par-fours that allow you a real chance at birdie, the 334-yard 13th, the 317-yard 14th, and the final hole, a 317-yarder. Number 12 is a good par-five that plays 516 yards from the tips, with the hole doglegging to the right, which may demand a precise layup shot to set up a wedge approach. The nine-hole layout measures 3,368 yards from the tips. It begins with a 157-yard par-three, with the toughest stretch of holes coming at three through five. Gillette Ridge Golf Club

illette Ridge Golf Club in Bloomfield, Ct. stands as a tribute to the traditions and challenges of golf, and is considered one of Palmer Course Design Company’s best creations. As you journey through Gillette Ridge, you’ll appreciate its natural beauty and a dynamic layout. The course will challenge and excite you as you maneuver through a variety of terrain; tree-lined fairways, spectacular carries, and several natural obstacles. Gillette Ridge was named to honor Francis Gillette, a local 19th century reformer, politician and business leader, whose house still stands on the site. The course features elevation changes and mature trees. Gillette Ridge closed briefly and fell into a state of disrepair several years ago due to management problems. Cigna Corporation, owner of the course and on whose land the layout sits, was committed to reopening the course and club. This is a true risk-reward hole as a long drive will leave the player with an opportunity to go for the green in two. Omni Mount Washington Resort
he Omni Mount Washington Resort features a classic Donald Ross-designed golf course opened in 1915. The course was restored a few years back by noted modern day architect Brian Silva, who based his work on the original Ross plans. Silva also restored the resort’s challenging nine-hole Mount Pleasant Course (opened 1895) in 1989 in collaboration with partner Geoffrey Cornish. The Mount Washington Course is challenging yet approachable for all skill levels and carries a rating of 73.7 and a slope of 124 from the back tees. Ross and then Silva imbued the course, a rather unique meadowland layout in a mountain setting, with character and challenge. The course features mildly undulating greens and a number of bunkers that complicate navi40
of the golf course, as well as the clubhouse. A main issue was with course’s the bunkers. A design team fixed all 45 bunkers, coring them out, fixing drainage issues and filling them in with all new sand. All 21 greens (including practice greens) on the property were redone. In addition new forward tee boxes were added. The clubhouse got a new carpet, new paint, new televisions, and new tables for the restaurant. Gillette Ridge has had a bit of a reputation as being a very difficult golf course that caters to the better player. But the owners’ new goal has been to keep the course challenging, while adjusting it to accommodate all levels of player without compromising the original intent of the design. There are four sets of tees at Gillette Ridge, making the course play anywhere from 7,191 yards at the tips to 5,582 from the forward markers. The course has been given

Both courses are set in some of the most picturesque surroundings in the Northeast near an ancient riverbed at the base of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the region. The Captains Golf Course
he Captains Golf Course in Brewster, Ma. features two very distinct 18-hole layouts. The Captains’ Port Course plays to a yardage of 6,724 yards from the tips and has a slope of 131 and a rating above its posted par of 72. So, it’s no pushover. One of the best holes on the Port Course is the beefy 573-yard, par-five eighth. There is a pond that guards the putting surface and several large fairway bunkers are placed along the hole to make precision on the drive and layup a prerequisite to making birdie or par. The Captains’ Starboard Course plays a tad longer than the Port Course, around 6,800 yards, and has a slope of 122. Most players who tackle both tracks say the Starboard Course it also a bit more player friendly than its sister layout, with wider fairways, large greens, and fewer bunkers than the Port Course, which makes it more suitable for mid- and higher handicap players. But we are here to tell you that it isn’t a pushover either. The course’s 18th is a great finishing hole, a challenging 534-yard par-five that can be

Changes were made to make the nearly 7,300-yard Bayberry Hills Golf Course friendlier to the average golfer, yet maintain or even enhance the course’s challenge to the low handicap player. Embracing the Bob Jones/Alistair MacKenzie (Augusta National Golf Club) design style, bunkers have been renovated and re-positioned to enhance play options. Plus, bunkers have been replaced with closely mown collection areas on some holes, providing multiple options for greenside recoveries, fairway corridors have been widened, and green surrounds have been expanded. Rough areas in the front of greens have been replaced by tightly mown fairway to create the illusion of false fronts in many cases. Forward teeing areas on four holes were added for more options in course setup and to provide additional user friendliness. The Links 9, which is on the property at Bayberry, opened in 1999 and is a real fun layout to play, with its wide open fairways, solid par-threes and exposure to the Cape’s wind, which makes the course play different

from day to day. A number of the holes are doglegs, which makes approach shots tricky if you don’t put your tee shot in the proper position. Number nine is a 195-yard par-three that demands an accurate shot over water to reach the green. Bass River is a 100-plus-year-old course that the legendary Donald Ross renovated and expanded in 1914. The layout rolls along among trees and sandy hills and features narrow fairways, small greens and views of nearby Bass River. The club’s signature hole is the sixth, a 169-yard par-three that plays across the river. ranberry Valley Golf Course, located in Harwich, Ma., is a well maintained layout that features a solid routing flowing over and past beautiful terrain that includes marshes and, of course as the name suggests, a few cranberry bogs. The course plays host to several high profile tournaments and is generally considered one of the most stringent tests of golf on the Cape. Geoffrey Cornish and Bill Robinson designed a layout where no two holes are the same. The par-threes are strong and the final three holes are extremely challenging. Noted architect Mark Mungeum enhanced the course a few years ago through an extensive bunker redesign and restoration. Several fairway bunkers were relocated so as to come into play to protect par against today’s modern equipment, although the best players can fly the traps off the tee. Within the past decade, the club has also added a clubhouse, maintenance building and a new irrigation system to enhance playing conditions. There’s also a new practice facility. Cranberry Valley isn’t long, 6,745 yards from the tips, but there are a number of dog-
leg holes and the course and demands proper club selection and shot placement off the tee. Par is 72, with the course rated 73.4 and a slope of 133 from the back tees, There are four sets of tees in all to meet the playing ability of any visitor. Most of the par-fours measure less than 400 yards, including the 309-yard 15th, which is approachable off the tee for long hitters. All of the par-fives, except for perhaps the 18th hole, are reachable in two for the longballers. Dennis Highlands and Dennis Pines Golf Courses

ennis Highlands Golf Course in Dennis, Ma. is a perfect start to a golf vacation on Cape Cod. The Highlands tends to be forgiving off the tee, but don’t get too comfortable around the greens, as the rolling terrain requires focus and concentration on tee shots and approaches to the greens. Dennis Highlands is situated on 175 acres of pine and oak forest on the north side of Dennis. Designed by Jack Kidwell and Mike Hardpan and opened for play in 1984, Dennis Highlands is considered by some to be one of the “crown jewels” in the traditional list of fine Cape Cod golf courses. It boasts a spectacular practice range and a visually enjoyable golf experience. The Pines Course is a bit more dramatic and challenging than the Highlands, with pine groves squeezing the fairways, putting a premium on more accurate shot-making. The Golf Committee for the Town 42

lue Fox Run Golf Course in Avon, Ct. offers 27 holes of great daily fee golf, and there is never any hassle getting a tee time with three nines to choose from. Blue Fox became a 27-hole layout several years ago. Five of the new holes are on the White Course and the other four on the Red Course. The unchanged former back nine is the Blue Course. The new holes are a pleasing mix of those that are open in nature and several that are lined by trees. There is ample bunkering in the fairways and around the modest-sized greens. One of the best new holes is the 500-yard par-five fourth on the White Course. If you can steer clear of fairway bunkers to the left of the fairway and high grass on the right, you may be left with an opportunity to go for the large, oblong green in two. Blue Fox is a course where you can air it out with driver on most holes, especially on the Red and White nines. The Blue Course, which has nine of the “old” holes, is a tad more stringent, especially over its last four or

five holes, one of which is an island green, the 17th. The 201-yard seventh hole on the Red Course is as good a par-three as you can get in the area. There’s a pond that guards the right side of the green and bunkers scattered around the putting surface. Mohegan Sun Golf Club

ohegan Sun Golf Club in Baltic, Ct. (www. MoheganSun.com) was given a new look a few years ago by noted New England architect Robert McNeil, and the reviews ever since have been very good indeed. The redesign gave the 6,691yard course a more links feel on many holes, with mounded fairway and greenside bunkers and tall fescue grass in the rough areas. In all, five holes were totally rebuilt, bunkers redesigned, and all new greens installed. The course is a true delight to play, as many of the holes are lined by woods and tall fescue grows along some fairways, making a loop around the track a visual pleasure. One of the best holes on the new track is the sixth, a 495-yard par-five that starts from a severely elevated tee. There is water if your tee shot is hit too strong straightway and big hitters can cut the corner on the right to shorten the approach, which is to an elevated green tucked into a hillside.

lissful Meadows Golf Club in Uxbridge, Ma. is a Geoffrey Cornish and Brian Silva design that winds its way through mature stands of tree. The course, which celebrated its 25th anniversary a few years back, is not long, even from the back markers, playing around 6,700 yards from the tips. Surrounded by the aforementioned woods as well as open meadows, the course presents a unique and secluded golfing experience. The front nine is more open than the back, which features several dramatic elevation changes and two of the best par-threes you’ll find anywhere. The conditions are always very good. The opening hole is a 353-yard par-four that demands a precise downhill tee shot to find a fairway that bends slightly to the left. The approach is to an elevated green with bunkers guarding the right side. It’s a visually exciting start to a round. The par-three 13th and 15th holes are stunning, a bit intimidating, and demand accurate mid- to long-irons off the tee in order to clear waste areas below and in front of the greens. Rock outcroppings lend a natural feel to the design of the two holes.
The 17th hole, a 400-yard par-four, is a perfect set up to the finishing hole. The toughest shot is the approach, with a pond guarding the green to the left. When the pin is tucked close to the water it begs you to pull off a tough shot and risk making bogey or worse. Blissful Meadow’s finisher measures 420 yards from the tips and calls for a solid approach shot over a pond that guards the front left side of the putting surface. Blackstone National Golf Club
T
he par-five 18th at Blackstone National Golf Club in Sutton. Ma, is a favorite for anyone who has played it. The hole measures just 485 yards from the tips, but it’s loaded with all kinds of trouble if you wander. The tee shot must be true to find a landing area protected by wetlands and woods. Big hitters can reach the putting surface in two shots after a strong drive, but the approach is uphill and there are a number of deep bunkers guarding the putting surface. The smart play is to lay up in front of the green and knock the ball onto the putting surface with a wedge. The 18th is a solid finisher and just one indication of the thoughtful approach Rees Jones put into the layout. The course is tucked into the wooded countryside of the Blackstone Valley area of southeastern part of the Bay State. One of the sweetest aspects of the track is that while it is challenging for the best players, Jones incorporated only a few forced carries, which makes it playable for mid-
and even high-handicappers. Ample fairways allow a player to stay in the hole even after a less than perfect tee shot. There is bunkering guarding the rather large greens, so it is important to choose the proper club to find the target. Blackstone National, which can stretch to almost 7,000 yards from the tips and plays to a par of 72, has some superb short holes that are also visually enticing. One of the most stunning par-threes on the layout is the 173-yard 11th, which demands a tee shot over a small pond. It shouldn’t be difficult to find the green. But any pulled tee shot may find the wet stuff. www.BNGC.net
