COMPLE TE BUYER ' S GUIDE FOR GOLFERS In a sport where three-letter acronyms are as common as double bogeys on a hacker’s scorecard, the hottest compounded trifecta of letters currently doing the rounds on the golf circuit are CBD.

arely mentioned in dispatches as recently as two years ago, interest in CBD, which is short for cannabidiol – the extract derived from a hemp plant – has increased almost exponentially.
Over the last few years CBD has risen to popularity in both pop culture and alternative medicine circles. It has been claimed to reduce anxiety, inflammation, sleeplessness and alleviate chronic pain. Athletes have begun using CBD to assist with muscle recovery and pain management, and the product is also said to help regulate the immune system and suppress inflammatory responses, which can both help prevent and treat injuries. After the World Anti-Doping Agency removed CBD from its banned substance list in 2018, it wasn’t long before PGA Tour player Scott McCarron became the first professional golfer to endorse a CBD product, and since then a growing number of higher profile tour players, including Major champions Bubba Watson, Charley Hoffman and Lucas Glover, and PGA Tour winner Scott Piercy, have actively started using it. CBD products, many targeted specifically at golfers, have flooded the market, with Major champions Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Darren Clarke being among the older generation of players that have given their ambassadorial support, and, in Norman and Clarke’s case, even their names, to entire CBD product ranges, that claim to offer a wide range of benefits previously described. Solheim Cup Catriona Matthew, who still competes on the LPGA Tour and Ladies European Tour, is another recent convert to CBD after undertaking extensive research and trialling various products. “I must admit, I was slightly nervous until I researched it all,” said Matthew, 51, who will be reprising her Solheim Cup captain’s role in the US this autumn. “My first reaction was that it was cannabis, but it’s not. In all my conversations, I obviously had to be absolutely certain that it is an approved substance across all the medical community and golf’s governing bodies. “I started using CBD products about six months ago and, so far, it’s been very beneficial for me. I’ve been doing a lot of fitness work lately and recovery-wise, it’s been working great for me in that respect, but there are the mental benefits, too. Anyone at the top level of sport will tell you that they do feel that anxiety and nerves in certain situations, so anything that can help alleviate those negative feelings must surely help.” Another player who has even more reason to be thankful for the healing powers of CBD is former European Tour player Chris Bibby, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2015. After briefly playing on tour in the late 1990s, Chris went on to become a successful club teaching professional before he began to suffer severe joint pain.
