A WARM WELCOME FOREWORD BY RICHARD BOXALL, SKY SPORTS COMMENTATOR AND FORMER EUROPEAN TOUR PROFESSIONAL
O
ne of the main attractions of golf, in my book at least, is the enormous variety of golf courses on which we are allowed to challenge ourselves – that and taking some money off my friends and colleagues! From parkland to heathland, links to cliff-top layouts – we are literally spoilt for choice, even more so in the South East of England, where you can be playing almost every type of course within a few miles of each other. During my travels on the European Tour with Sky Sports I am often faced with monstrous 7,500-yard venues that place too much emphasis on smashing a driver, so when I come back home to Surrey it is refreshing to play more manageable courses, where you have a good chance of making birdie, providing you find the fairway with your tee shot. Bigger doesn’t have to mean better, so don’t overlook courses where the par is 69 or the yardage barely gets above 6,000 yards – they are often the hardest to score well on.
PAGE 3 | THE ULTIMATE GOLF GUIDE
We are also fortunate in golf that we have a handicapping system that allows the best to play with the rest. That means that society and corporate days can accommodate any standard of golfer, from the inexperienced hacker to the touring professional, and all levels in between. That’s why golf, in my eyes, remains the ultimate leveller. The job of organising a society or corporate golf day can sometimes seem like a tough one, given the vast array of courses to choose from and the huge number of considerations, such as catering, prizes, invitations, and all the other essential items that appear on the golf day checklist, but it can also be a thrill, especially if you get to try out some of the courses in advance to see if they meet your demands. This handy guide aims to turn that job into a more pleasurable experience by listing a wide selection of venues to suit all skills levels and budgets. Clubs offering the most simple of 9-hole parkland layouts to the most challenging 36hole championship resorts – and a
lot more in between – are all within easy reach of your fingertips and a phone call or, in these times, a click of a mouse. Organising such days can be simplified by hiring a company to do it all for you, but with the help of this guide, you can save the expense and spend more on your clients instead. All the clubs featured are here to help make your golf day a success. With detailed course descriptions, package prices, details of facilities, contacts and those allimportant directions, they’ve listed everything you need to know to get your day off to a flyer. So let your fingers do the walking – and hopefully your clubs do the talking – at one of the many and varied venues that follow. The only thing that can’t be arranged is the weather! Happy golfing and may all your putts find the cup – eventually! Richard Boxall

things to consider WHEN booking your golf day
Advanced planning and little bit of foresight will allow you to get the most from your corporate or society golf day when it finally arrives
T
he first question: Do you want to play one or two rounds? What type of competition (singles, Stableford, greensomes, four ball better ball or foursomes)? Most clubs these days will restrict societies to these formats and you’ll find it difficult to arrange medal rounds. If you favour two rounds, most golfers prefer to avoid a full three-course midday meal, so to ensure the right conditions, choose golf clubs that are able and willing to provide, say, a ploughman’s lunch followed by an evening meal.
Due to business commitments, some people may find it difficult to attend for a whole day, so if you adopt this suggestion, you’ll increase your potential afternoon attendance, and can round off the day with a prize giving after the evening meal. The golfing ability of your membership is another point you must take into account. If you have a high percentage of high handicap players, they won’t want you to select a difficult course. Your objective should always be to offer the prospect of a good, challenging course that is within
their capabilities, rather than inadvertently inflicting a demoralising experience upon the unsuspecting. And then, there’s the cost. While we all like to play the Wentworths, Sunningdales and the like, if you do your homework you’ll find plenty of superb courses in this guide which will provide your society with all the facilities you require. A good day’s golf enjoyed by all at a reasonable price is your guarantee of success. You’re halfway there. Next decision – the attention to detail. Right, now let’s assume THE ULTIMATE GOLF GUIDE | PAGE 8
golfguide_2011_(artwork).indd 8
7/2/11 12:07:14
you’ve received confirmation of your booking from the selected club. You’ve been allocated reserved teeoff times, and chosen the menu. Most clubs will also send you a map showing their location, together with the club rules, which should, of course, be respected and observed by all participants. Approximately three to seven days prior to your visit, the steward or secretary will want to know your exact numbers for catering purposes, so it’s advisable for you to post a written notice of your meeting to all members at least three weeks ahead.
The more detailed information you can put in your notice, the better, e.g. meeting time, reserved tee-off times, format, catering arrangements, prizes, club rules and etiquette, map, and cost of the day. It’s a good idea to have a simple reply form enclosed with your notice, which will enable your members to respond quickly, and to indicate if they intend to bring a guest. Come the big day – your having arrived at the clubhouse at 8.30am – if you’re not careful you’ll suddenly be besieged by eager golfers, asking who their playing partners are and in what order they should tee off. The easy and simple solution is to prepare a list of order of play the night before the meeting. Mind you, even that’s not foolproof, because inevitably someone is bound to be late or have some last-minute problem that prevents him or her from turning up on time. One way to deal with this situation is to ask one of the committee members – who is prepared to tee off late – to rearrange the starters’ list according to those already present. Last, but by no means least, don’t forget to appoint a match official – preferably someone who has teed off early. You’ll need him or her to collect all the cards for the morning and afternoon rounds, and to sort out the results. People who quite voluntarily accept the responsibility of organising society days deserve tremendous admiration. It requires a great deal of hard work, and this guide will enable you to pick the right venue for your society or company day. Happy golfing!

The way that golfers are booking tee times is changing, and Teeofftimes. co.uk, the UK’s largest tee time booking service, is leading the way
S
ince its launch in 2007 Teeofftimes.co.uk has seen dramatic growth and has quickly developed into the leading company in online tee times, arranging golf for 105,000 customers in 2010 at more than 550 golf clubs. This is clear evidence that golfers’ habits are changing, and the online market is seeing a surge in the number of customers wanting to book tee times via the internet. Powered by Golfbreaks. com, Europe’s largest golf travel company, Teeofftimes.co.uk offers golfers a highly-convenient tee time booking service, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, whilst at the same time giving clubs and resorts the opportunity of reaching new customers via the internet. Teeofftimes.co.uk provides an easy to navigate website with clear tee times and prices, giving golfers unprecedented choice and variety on when and where to play their golf. It’s not just the social golfers that are taking advantage of this great service. Golf societies are reaping the benefits too, with over 600 society bookings in 2010. An increasing number of societies and large groups are choosing to book their entire calendar of golfing events through Teeofftimes.co.uk. Consecutive tee times with great savings can be booked online or to get extra added value, with a dedicated sales team that will put together a bespoke package to suit each society enquiry. The dedicated society sales team are highly trained and are on hand to advise and assist with any society day enquiry you have,
Teeing off for the Future as well as recommending suitable venues at a budget that suits you. The shift in golfing habits is reflected in booking patterns and the trend towards last-minute bookings. In 2010, 67% of bookings were made within 72 hours of play and 43% were booked when the pro shop would normally be closed. This shows the real change in the golfer’s attitude to get the best choice, price and the ability to fit the purchase around busy work schedules. Golf clubs themselves are embracing the additional golfers that Teeofftimes.co.uk is providing each week. They provide the tee times they have available and want to sell, and let Teeofftimes.co.uk do the rest. They are reaping the benefits of selling tee times through a trusted third party.
Golfers making bookings through Teeofftimes.co.uk also benefit by earning Break Points, a unique loyalty scheme that rewards people, with one point for every £10 spent. These points can then be redeemed against any future Teeofftimes.co.uk booking, Golfbreaks.com holiday, or spa break through BookaSpa.com. Teeofftimes.co.uk still have a lot of hard work ahead, the plan now is to expand into Ireland in 2011 to offer golfers even more choice and flexibility when booking their tee times – that step is already being warmly welcomed by clubs and resorts who already work with the company.

London Scottish is an out-of-the-ordinary 18-hole golf course. The longest continuously played-upon links in England, it has no bunkers, and, at comfortably less than 6,000 yards, sets itself apart from the modern obsession with length. But you most certainly have to be accurate and your putter, on greens that are universally acclaimed as among the best in Surrey, needs to be hot. Designed by Tom Dunn and JH Taylor, this tree-lined course exhibits the old penchant for short par fours and testing par threes, including the 243-yard fifth, voted by professionals as one of the top-ten most difficult short holes in the country. Built on gravel, the course drains fantastically well, and never has temporary greens. The atmospheric grade II-listed wood-panelled clubhouse is one of the few in Britain that remains from the Victorian era, and is a wonderful setting for your after-match meal or refreshments. A couple of minutes from the A3 and 15 minutes from the M25, the course is highly accessible and is an ideal venue for anyone based in the south or London.

North Downs golf club Probably the highest golf course in the south of England, North Downs is located on top of the hill in the pretty village of Woldingham. It was founded in 1899 as a nine-hole course and extended to 18 holes in 1971, allowing the layout to be substantially altered. At 5,815 yards off the back tees, it might not be the longest course you’ll ever play, but don’t underestimate the challenge of getting around without too many blemishes on your scorecard. The result is a course where accuracy, particularly on the par 4s, is a pre-requisite to good scoring. Despite being 850 feet up in the folds of the North Downs, the terrain is pretty gentle, although one climb is required. Fortunately, it’s on the 17th, when golfers’ thoughts are already turning to a drink and a bite to eat at the 19th. The views over the surrounding countryside are superb, and the course is always in good condition, even during the depths of winter, when only a blanket of snow has been known to close it down. The club has a reputation for friendliness, which is extended to societies, who can choose from a variety of packages at competitive rates. Full catering is available in the dining room, and a well-stocked pro shop adds to the pleasure of visiting one of Surrey’s hidden gems.

Prince’s offers all that is best in modern links golf: with its 27 holes of championship golf, a centrally-located clubhouse offering magnificent views over the course and Pegwell Bay, with helpful, attentive staff who understand your needs. Pyecombe golf club From the very first tee, with a tricky second shot to a green which appears to be ‘in the clouds’, right through to the 18th downhill – a dogleg right – there are many excellent and demanding holes. The 421-yard, par-four third hole is particularly magnificent, threading its way down the valley to a tight landing area and back up to the well protected green, as is the par-three eighth, with its elevated tee across the valley to the awaiting green - or the htree pot bunkers in front! The par-five ninth, snaking its way through the beautiful South Downs countryside, is a delight to play, while the fiendish green to the 223-yard 13th is a tough test for the best of golfers. Though it’s not all about the golf; even when not playing well, you can still enjoy some of the best scenery in the South of England, and some pretty good hospitality as well. The clubhouse offers a good selection of food and drink at competitive prices and a friendly ambience that you would expect from a club that is proud to have had the renowned Henry Longhurst as a former President and neighbour when he lived in one of the well-known Jack and Jill windmills that overlook the Club’s 16th green.

First opened in 1888, the West Course was host to the English Ladies Championship in 1932. Southampton City Golf Course Southampton City Golf Course recently celebrated its 75th anniversary and is re-establishing its reputation as one of the top pay-and-play facilities in the south of England. Designed by the five-time Open Champion J.H Taylor, the course is set in acres of mature parkland. Despite being over 75 years old, the course still offers a great test of golf to players of all abilities, with an interesting range of holes, each with tree-lined fairways and many with large, challenging greens. In fact, despite hosting the Southampton Open each year, which attracts a number of the best golfers from the region, the course record has stood for over 20 years. Having recently been taken over by new management in the form of Mytime Active, the course is also benefitting from new investment which has helped to improve the overall and, in particular, winter playability. The golf course has also introduced a dress code on the 18-hole course, which we hope will help us to combine the best elements of friendly unpretentious pay-and-play golf with the ethos of fair play and good etiquette that you come to expect from private clubs.
Society Packages: From £17.50 per person during the week and £22.50 per person at weekends, based on groups of four people playing together. For a great summer package 18 holes of golf followed by a BBQ on the patio is a really fun experience and brilliant value at only £24 during the week and £29 at the weekend. Greens Fees: Despite the quality of the course, the green fees remain among the lowest in Hampshire. Please call the booking office for prices and special offers. Visitor Restrictions: There are no restrictions on visitors at all, although we do now operate a dress code on our 18 hole course. How to get there: Southampton City Golf Course is ideally situated close to the city of Southampton, and also close to the two major motorways that operate on the south coast. Accommodation: Southampton City Centre hotels are 2 miles from the Golf Course. Other Facilities: The golf course has both an 18-hole and 9-hole course, large practice area, two putting greens and a practice net. As part of our bar and restaurant, there is also a private committee room that can be used for a private function or for a more private society experience.

STONEHAM golf club Laid out in an undulating deer park, Stoneham provides a beautiful, yet challenging, setting in which to play golf. One of the South’s hidden gems, it is a particular favourite of Peter Alliss, who played here regularly in the 50s and 60s when the Club frequently hosted professional tournaments. The course offers a combination of heathland and parkland, with the rolling landscape testing every aspect of the golfer’s armoury from the tee to subtle yet quick greens. Improvements in the quality of the course in recent years ensure that the course is always in immaculate condition and never uses temporary greens. The recently-refurbished clubhouse is the perfect place to relax either side of your round, whilst enjoying a drink from the bar and sampling the excellent produce provided by our caterers. The views over the course to the rolling countryside beyond from the patio provide the perfect backdrop to enjoy your post golf refreshments and muse over what might have been during your round. When it comes to visiting golfers, whether society or corporate, nothing is too much trouble, and your day will be customised to suit you, not us. Anything is possible: all you have to do is ask. The Club’s location to the north of Southampton and only five minutes from the M3/M27 motorway network makes it an ideal location to hold a business meeting in our boardroom before rewarding yourself and your clients with lunch and a round of golf.

The excellent facilities are further enhanced by the 14th century farmhouse, which is home to the relaxing clubhouse, and houses two meeting rooms and the renowned brasserie restaurant. MANOR HOUSE GOLF CLUB Set in 365 acres of breathtaking Cotswold countryside, the Manor House Golf Club is a much-admired choice for society and corporate golf days. The mature oak and beech trees that line the magnificent fairways, together with the hand-cut greens and the River Bybrook meandering through its core, bring both drama and beauty. Awarded the prestigious course ranking Gold Award by Golf Monthly for quality of design and clubhouse ambience, it is one of the most spectacular 18-hole, par 72 golf courses in the UK. There are five excellent par threes on this dramatic layout, not least ‘Burton Brook’ the 17th, one of the most exciting short holes you’ll find anywhere. A par on the sweeping and pretty closing hole will be a fitting end to one of the most enjoyable and exciting rounds of golf you’re likely to experience. The sumptuously furnished clubhouse (previously awarded clubhouse restaurant of the year) offers tasty dining in the Woodbury Restaurant and buzzing spike bar, alternatively, if you fancy a spot of fine dining, the Michelin-starred Bybrook restaurant is just a short buggy ride away. Golf-Hotel de Saint-Saens golf course Situated between Rouen and Dieppe, in the heart of a natural wooded park of 200 acres, Saint-Saens Golf Course is unique in Normandy. This course offers a large variety of holes, with its three distinct sections; an entertaining mixture of valley holes (with water), forest (with tree-lined and panoramic tees) and high plateau (with wide and generous fairways). The first five holes are in the valley, just below the chateau clubhouse. Water is present and part of the game. The following forest holes meander through the woodland, taking advantage of its natural opening and breathtaking views.
Society Packages: Societies welcome. Group rates (10 people+): 33E weekday and 45E weekends. Green Fees: Individual from 38E to 50E and couples from 65E to 90E. How to get there: From Calais (1hr 30mins): A16 motorway to Abbeville. A28 motorway direction Rouen. Exit 10 Les Hayons. Follow SaintSaens directions. /Through village follow Golf Hotel signs. Accommodation: 13 new-modern ensuite bedrooms in the annex. 7 ensuite bedrooms onsite in the chateau. Overnight stay 1/2 board & golf from 116E. Two nights 1/2 board & 3 days of golf from 241E. Special 4 night 1/2 board & unlimited golf package from 427E.
From the 12th, with their generous fairways, the plateau holes are tempting for the longer hitters – but these holes can be difficult when the wind, bunkers, doglegs and roughs come into game. On the 17th, it’s back to a tree-lined fairway and the 18th gives you a lovely finishing par-four hole with a magnificent view of the chateau. The chateau hotel has seven comfortable rooms, all overlooking the beautiful countryside and golf course and our new modern hotel, situated only 100 metres from the clubhouse, opened 13 further rooms in 2008. Saint-Saens will be proudly celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. This course has reached the standard of many mature parkland courses in the south of England. With excellent dining facilities in the restaurant and one of the warmest welcomes in France, Saint-Saens is the perfect blend of picturesque and diverse, making it an entertaining, but not too testing holiday golf course.
