DARE TO MAKE YOUR GOLF DAY DIFFERENT! FOREWORD BY SARAH STIRK
W
e all like the experience of a well-run golf day. A day out of the office in beautiful surroundings, with good company, a suitably challenging golf course, and hopefully the sun on your back – what’s not to love? So what makes for a great golf day? An interesting dynamic for me at the moment is the pace of play, something my fellow Sky Sports colleagues and I discuss heatedly on a regular basis. Rory McIlroy recently voiced his concerns about declining participation and the game taking too long. I think golf day organisers and societies need to take note. A golf day doesn’t always literally need to take all day. Some of the most enjoyable golf days I’ve played in have not been dawn to dusk affairs. Nowadays, who can spare that sort of time away from work, family or home commitments? Some days start very early indeed, with registration at 7am, followed by breakfast, practice, then typically a five- to six-hour round, post-round drinks, dinner, more drinks to follow, then an auction and invariably a comedian, who will keep you entertained into the wee small hours. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, but in today’s busy world, very few of us

can afford that length of time out of our schedules. Less can often mean more. What I find works best, especially during the long summer months, is an early tee time followed by a rolling buffet-style lunch. It creates a more relaxed vibe and everyone can be away in good time. A shotgun start is even better, as it ensures that everyone finishes at the same time, and no-one has to hang around for
There’s more pressure than ever to make your event stand out from the crowd. hours waiting for either the food or the prize presentation. The other important factor in the success of any golf day is the choice of venue. As easy as the pros make 7,000-yard courses look – they aren’t. Typically, golf days feature a wide spectrum of skill levels, from the very good club player to the once-a-year hacker who doesn’t have a handicap, so trudging round a monster layout when you’re struggling to break 100 isn’t much fun for anyone, including the unfortunate playing partners! So golf day organisers need to be aware of the type of golfers they are inviting to their day, so that everyone gets
maximum enjoyment from the day. Post-golf entertainment can also make or break a golf day. I listened to the same jokes three weeks running during the summer, which was no fault of the hosts, but showed a certain lack of imagination. There’s more pressure than ever to make your event stand out from the crowd. Magicians have become a welcome and popular addition to the golf day circuit now, and I think they make ofr a refreshing change. Goodie bags also offer an opportunity to stand out. Ill-fitting polo shirts and divot repair tool kits should be a thing of the past. Obviously cost is a factor, but creative gifts on arrival can really set the tone for the day. So my advice is to think outside the box when organising your golf days in 2015. Don’t follow the same old formulas, but think about how your can freshen things up to make it memorable for all the right reasons. Golfnews’s Ultimate Guide will certainly help with your choice of venue, but the rest is up to you and your imagination. Happy golfing!

THE TRICK MASTER
D I
AVID EDWARDS IS widely regarded as the best trick shot golf artist in the business. A former European Tour professional himself, he has now performed his amazing show in almost 60 different countries. And he has been in demand at some of the world’s top events, including the 2010 Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor and the 2011 Solheim Cup in Ireland. Three times too he has also been invited to perform at the European Tour’s end of season showpiece championship event in Dubai. The top players themselves marvel at his skills and some of them - including Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald and Luis Oosthuizen have loved the chance to take part. Last year alone David travelled more than 130,000 miles with his show and helped to raise in excess of £100,000 for charity. He is hugely popular in China, making no fewer than seven trips to perform there during 2013. David has already started this year’s hectic schedule which has taken him to Turkey, Florida and Dubai and coming up soon is a trip to the 2014 Volvo China Open. David constantly updates his show, using a variety of props and clubs of all shapes and sizes. A hugely versatile entertainer from North Lincolnshire, also offers a brilliantly funny on-course video
commentary for corporate events which is played back later on the big screen. Together with his Trick Shot Show it can add a real ‘wow’ factor to any golf day, from a big international corporate event to a special day at a local club. One of David’s biggest fans is veteran television commentator
Peter Alliss.“There is a small band of golf professionals who have the consummate ability being able to demonstrate a variety of trick shots with great skill and aplomb,” said Peter. “During my life in the world of golf I’ve seen most of them and David Edwards ranks alongside the very best.” For further information: Tel: 01724 733213 / 07887 545114 Email: info@david-edwards.co.uk Website: www.david-edwards.co.uk

THE DEAN DAVIS GOLF SHOW
F
or the past 16 years Dean has performed his unique Trick Shot Show at events throughout the UK, Europe and further afield, whether it be corporate days, captains days, charity days or even weddings. The Dean Davis Golf Show really does add extra entertainment to events. We also offer entertainment on a Par 3, which over the years has raised a substantial amount for charities. This is a great way to raise money with players paying a fee (normally £5.00) to get their ball closer to Dean’s while he is hitting a trick shot. All the money raised on this challenge goes to either the Charity for the day or towards the running of the event.
With the Par 3 Challenge taking place during the golfing event, it leaves players in anticipation for the trick shot show! The show itself is ideal for both golfers and non golfers with a complete display of golfing tricks like you have never seen before, using hammers, fishing rods, hose pipe and even off people’s head! DOUBLE TROUBLE GOLF SHOW You’ve heard of Torvill and Dean and their all-conquering skating performance in the Olympics... now how about Tom and Dean, an amazing golf double act? Dean has recently teamed up with Tom Hollingworth, a two-times
Thank you to Dean Davis, who performed his legendary Golf Trick Shot Show at our recent charity golf event in aid of the Peter Jones Foundation. His show was both captivating and highly entertaining, making it an unforgettable experience for all the guests. Peter Jones CBE European Long Drive Champion to form a unique show with double the trouble. Can you imagine the spectacle: Dean hitting his drive straight down the fairway while bouncing up and down on a trampoline, and Tom blasting a ball over quarter of a mile into the far beyond. Wow! That is a must see spectacle.

Advanced planning and little bit of foresight will allow you to get the most from your corporate or society golf day when it finally arrives.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BOOKING YOUR GOLF DAY
T
HE FIRST QUESTION: Do you want to play one or two rounds? What type of competition (singles, Stableford, greensomes, four ball better ball or foursomes)? Most clubs these days will restrict societies to these formats and you’ll find it difficult to arrange medal rounds. If you favour two rounds, most golfers prefer to avoid a full three-course midday meal, so to ensure the right conditions, choose golf clubs that are able and willing to provide, say, a ploughman’s lunch followed by an evening meal. Due to business commitments, some people may find it difficult to attend for a whole day, so if you adopt this suggestion, you’ll increase your potential afternoon attendance, and can round off the day with a prize giving after the evening meal. The golfing ability of your membership is another point you must take into account. If you have a high percentage of high handicap players, they won’t want you to select a difficult PAGE 17 | THE ULTIMATE GOLF GUIDE
course. Your objective should always be to offer the prospect of a good, challenging course that is within their capabilities, rather than inadvertently inflicting a demoralising experience upon the unsuspecting. And then, there’s the cost. While we all like to play the Wentworths, Sunningdales and the like, if you do your homework you’ll find plenty of superb courses in this guide which will provide your society with all the facilities you require. A good day’s golf enjoyed by all at a reasonable price is your guarantee of success. YOU’RE HALFWAY THERE. Next decision – the attention to detail. Right, now let’s assume you’ve received confirmation of your booking from the selected club. You’ve been allocated reserved tee-off times, and chosen the menu. Most clubs will also send you a map showing their location, together with the club rules, which should, of course, be respected and observed by all participants. Approximately three to seven days prior to your visit,
the steward or secretary will want to know your exact numbers for catering purposes, so it’s advisable for you to post a written notice of your meeting to all members at least three weeks ahead. The more detailed information you can put in your notice, the better, e.g. meeting time, reserved tee-off times, format, catering arrangements, prizes, club rules and etiquette, map, and cost of the day. It’s a good idea to have a simple reply form enclosed with your notice, which will enable your members to respond quickly, and to indicate if they intend to bring a guest. Come the big day – your having arrived at the clubhouse at 8.30am – if you’re not careful you’ll suddenly be besieged by eager golfers, asking who their playing partners are and in what order they should tee off. The easy and simple solution is to prepare a list of order of play the night before the meeting. Mind you, even that’s not foolproof, because inevitably someone is bound to be late or have
some last-minute problem that prevents him or her from turning up on time. One way to deal with this situation is to ask one of the committee members – who is prepared to tee off late – to rearrange the starters’ list according to those already present. Last, but by no means least, don’t forget to appoint a match official – preferably someone who has teed off early. You’ll need him or her to collect all the cards for the morning and afternoon rounds, and to sort out the results. People who quite voluntarily accept the responsibility of organising society days deserve tremendous admiration. It requires a great deal of hard work, and this guide will enable you to pick the right venue for your society or company day. Happy golfing!

The combination of a superbly-designed course and excellent clubhouse facilities will make your day one to remember. The course provides an excellent challenge to the skills of low and high handicap players alike. Built to championship standards, with USGA greens and tees, the course has automatic irrigation and a drainage system designed to provide excellent year round play. Among the many attractive features of the course are the six strategicallyplaced lakes. There is a combination of challenging par 4s, reachable par 5s and six superb par 3s. The clubs signature hole is the 15th, a 222-yard par 3 nestling in front of the clubhouse terrace. Enjoy the welcoming atmosphere of the clubhouse, which boasts a first floor function suite overlooking the 15th hole, with a private bar capable of hosting a sitdown function for 150 guests. CROHAM HURST GOLF CLUB Croham Hurst is a traditional member’s club that offers a warm and friendly welcome to all who come to visit. Whether out on the fabulous 18-hole parkland course or in the relaxing clubhouse, which overlooks the first and 10th tees, there is a sense of history and a wonderfully warm sensation of being completely at home. Situated in gently rolling countryside just two miles from central Croydon, the club feels like it’s in the middle of rural England, with mature tree-lined fairways and dense woodland, creating a natural amphitheatre on virtually every hole. The par-71, 6,357-yard parkland course, which was designed by Fred Hawtree and James Braid, extends up a valley in a series of gently-undulating loops. The course rewards accurate driving, and the well-placed bunkers and undulating greens provide an interesting challenge to golfers of all standards. Built on chalk soil, the course drains well, offering the opportunity of all year round golf, while it also offers an easy and enjoyable walk, and is seldom deemed unplayable, even in the harshest conditions. The comfortable clubhouse has a south-facing terrace, and the restaurant is renowned for serving high quality, home-cooked food. As Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie said on a recent visit: “Croham Hurst is one of the nicest courses in the South East of England.” There’s no better endorsement than that. GATTON MANOR GOLF CLUB Set in 200 acres of tranquil and scenic Surrey countryside, Gatton Manor is a complete golf, business and leisure venue, only one hour from London, close to the West Sussex towns of Horsham and Crawley, and the Surrey towns of Dorking, Cranleigh and Guildford. The mature 18-hole woodland course was established in the late 1960s. Designed by Commander John D Harris, no two holes are alike and the Commander has made imaginative use of streams, lakes and tree lined fairways. This is a course to be respected; a good scorecard can be suddenly ruined if the challenges of each hole are not carefully considered. Try the 17th hole for your longest drive challenge. At a mere 645 yards, it is the longest hole in the south east! From the excellent practice facilities – driving range, putting green and chipping practice area – to the fair challenge of the course, there is no better place in which to enjoy a round of golf. The club has successfully entertained a range of societies, charities and corporate golfing events over the years, and was chosen as the host venue to launch the Senior Professional Golf Tour in the UK and recently staged the Surrey Club Foursomes Championship. Designed by David Williams, the 7,000-yard course is laid out over nearly 250 acres, so that even on a busy day it can feel like you are out on your own. The course is one of the longest in Surrey when played from the championship tees, but there are forward tees on all holes, with the white tees at 6,600 and the yellows at 6,300, ensuring it presents a suitable challenge for any player. Water comes into play on five holes, while strategically-placed bunkers can catch wayward shots, so there is a premium on accuracy. The playing conditions are excellent all year round, and the USGA-standard greens ensure temporary putting surfaces are never used. OAK PARK GOLF CLUB & GYM Located in the village of Crondall, and easily accessible from the A3, M3 and A31, Oak Park offers 27 holes of golf, a driving range, bar and restaurant, pro shop and gym. The club has two courses to enjoy, the 18-hole Woodland and the 9-hole Village. The former is tree-lined from start to finish and provides some stunning views over the Hampshire countryside, while the latter offers a gentler stroll around the edge of the pretty village of Crondall. The Woodland measures 6065 yards off the white tees, maybe short by modern standards, but not without its challenges. Many holes require an accurate tee shot and a precise approach to some testing greens. Surely, a very pleasant alternative to the flat, easy, spray-it-from-fairway-to-fairway golf courses. The 9 hole, par 36, 3218 yard Village course is a flatter layout with a beguiling mix of holes that make it quite probably the best 9 hole course in the area! It is extremely popular with time-pressed golfers, “9 holes, Pie and a Pint”, but is also ideal for golfing societies wishing to have a full day at Oak Park and play 27 different holes.

SELSDON PARK HOTEL & GOLF CLUB Selsdon Park Hotel & Golf Club is a traditional, mature parkland golf course cut from the original thick forest that dominated this part of Surrey when the course was first designed by JH Taylor, five times winner of the British Open, in 1929. The elevated greens and fairways lined with countless sycamore, beech, oak, silver birch and cedar trees, all make Selsdon a truly memorable course to play. During the last two years, Selsdon has refocused itself at all levels, with the golf course being just one of it’s many developments. Work has included reshaping the course, designing a new bunker appearance, introducing new fauna with wild flowers and the vast woodland management project. In total the course has five par-5 holes, four of which measure over 500 yards. This need not be an intimidating experience, all but one of the nine par-4 holes are less than 400 yards and two of them are under 300 yards, so whether you are a handicapper or scratch player, Selsdon Park Hotel & Golf Club will give you the opportunity to dust down all of your clubs! The course stretches 6368 yards, a challenging par 72.

The original Rotex technology changed the face of spin, and we engineered Rotex 2.0 to take spin control to the next level. It starts with sharper Tour Zip Grooves for better channeling of debris and moisture, creating cleaner contact. Our enhanced 2-pass micro milling pattern is strategically designed to add more friction and even more spin. The final step is Laser Milled Technology to fine-tune surface roughness across the face. It all adds up to more spin and better scoring than ever before, no matter the conditions. This is Spin 2.0.

The course will challenge golfers of all abilities, consistent with the design influences of the great Harry S Colt. It possesses a charm quite distinctively its own, offering visitors to the Club an all-round experience to remember. The course, which is widely regarded as one of Colt’s ‘hidden gems’, is a challenging test of accuracy rather than length and uniquely there are eight

esigned by the same man that built Royal St George’s, and subsequently refined by renowned architects James Braid and Alister MacKenzie, and latterly Donald Steel and Peter Alliss, Littlestone is one of England’s most revered links courses. Host of the first Ladies
Championship in 1894, countless final qualifying tournaments for the Open, and numerous elite amateur events, Littlestone is steeped in golfing history. With the exception of some new back tees, visitors will find the course largely unchanged since MacKenzie’s day, and will discover a classic flat, fast-running links measuring 6,486 yards off the whites. From most tees everything is laid out in front of you, although there is the occasional semi-blind shot. Numerous deep and wellplaced bunkers and quick greens ramp up the challenge, while the closing stretch is among the most formidable to be found. As well as the Championship course, Littlestone also offers the Warren Course, a 5,242-yard, par 67 course that is a great introduction to links golf and is ideal for societies with a wide range of handicaps. Set on the edge of the famous Romney Marsh, the free-draining course offers fast-running fairways defined by natural dunes, thick rough and classic links bunkers. Societies are welcome on both courses, and in addition we can add to your day by providing range balls, a golf clinic, a welcome bag, one-to-one lessons or a host of other ideas to help you enjoy your day.

DIBDEN GOLF CENTRE Situated on the eastern edge of the New Forest, Dibden Golf Centre overlooks Southampton Water and presents golfers with stunning coastal views. Opened 42 years ago, Dibden offers 27 holes of golf that will appeal with a wide range of abilities. Since April 2012, the centre has been under the management of MyTime Active, an experienced golf course operator which manages 18 pay-andplay venues throughout the country. The mature 5,935-yard 18-hole course is a delight to play, with generous fairways offering the opportunity for good scoring. Key holes include the par-5 third, which is reachable in two if you’re brave enough to go for it over the water, while the par-4 12th hole offers stunning sea views from the elevated tee, and at 307 yards is driveable with a following wind. The course is undulating without being too hilly, although buggies can be hired from the pro shop if required. The par 29 nine-hole layout, which measures 1,520 yards, was added in 1991. Among the highlights is the signature 6th, which is particularly challenging, with trees protecting inaccurate approaches to the green. Additional facilities include a 9 hole course, an extensive short game practice area, a floodlit 18-bay covered driving range and a well-stocked pro shop.

Boasting an 18-hole championship course, a stunning clubhouse, a nine-hole academy course, and excellent practice and hospitality facilities, Paultons is an ideal venue for societies of all sizes. The golf courses have been built within the original Paultons Estate, which was laid out by Capability Brown, and all 27 holes offer a spectacular backdrop of woodland and classic parkland. The main course measures 6,238 yards, which makes it very manageable for all levels of golfer. There are five par-threes and three par-fives, with the longest, the second, measuring 536 yards. The signature hole is the 161-yard 15th, a short hole that is made to seem longer by the presence of a lake that separates the tee from the green. The adjacent nine-hole academy course is just 1,324 yards long, but provides an excellent venue to hone short game skills, and introduce beginners to the game. All 27 holes are always presented in great condition, with no use of temporary greens, even in the winter. The Waterloo Course is a picturesque par 69 layout measuring just under than ditches and tree-lined fairways in plentiful supply. The signature hole is the 10th, a magnificent par four with trees lining both sides of the fairway from tee to green, and out of bounds coming into play on the left. The Wellington Course is the longer of the two layouts, measuring 6,400 yards and with a par of 72. Consequently this offers a different challenge to the Waterloo, giving more of an opportunity to open the shoulders, especially at the four lengthy par fives – the 5th, 7th, 11th and 15th – which weigh in at 565, 501, 542 and 561 yards respectively. Both courses are set up for an enjoyable experience for the casual golfer, while still providing a challenge for the more accomplished player. SANDFORD SPRINGS GOLF CLUB Its three loops of nine holes give Sandford Springs Golf Club a unique feel. The charming club, nestled in the north Hampshire countryside, emanates an air of quiet contentment, and yet such a calm façade belies a passionate heartbeat that exists beneath. There is a real sense of character about the place, from the moment you first set eyes on the pretty white clubhouse with its ornate ironwork and neat touches. Even the 27 holes – set out as three distinct loops of nine in the form of the aptlynamed Wood, Park and Lakes courses – are serene and meander through the rolling countryside overlooking Watership Down. SOUTHAMPTON CITY GOLF COURSE Southampton City Golf Course recently celebrated its 75th anniversary, two years ago and is re-establishing its reputation as one of the top pay-and-play facilities in the south of England. Designed by the five-time Open Champion J.H Taylor, the course is set in acres of mature parkland. Despite being over 75 years old, the course still offers a great test of golf to players of all abilities, with an interesting range of holes, each with tree-lined fairways and many with large, challenging greens. In fact, despite hosting the Southampton Open each year, which attracts a number of the best golfers from the region, the course record has stood for over 20 years. Having recently been taken over by new management in the form of Mytime Active, the course is also benefitting from new investment which has helped to improve the overall and, in particular, winter playability. The golf course has also introduced a dress code on the 18-hole course, which we hope will help us to combine the best elements of friendly unpretentious pay-and-play golf with the ethos of fair play and good etiquette that you come to expect from private clubs.

left-hand dogleg, which requires a long and accurate drive to leave a short shot into a well-protected green. The 425-yard sixth also rewards accuracy off the tee, followed by a well-struck approach into the narrow mouth of a long green. Elsewhere, visitors will find forgiving, wide fairways and inviting putting surfaces. Of the five short holes, the 10th and 17th place a particular premium on accuracy, and it is no coincidence that most societies choose the par-four 18th for their long drive competition – the elevated tee and generous fairway demands that players pull out the driver and attempt to launch the ball at the flag some 380 yards into the distance. The course is kept in magnificent condition throughout the year by the dedicated team of greenkeepers, and the setting could barely be more idyllic, with fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding area to enjoy.

All three layouts are built on sandy subsoil, and this, combined with the latest equipment and modern maintenance schedules, enables the club to present the courses to the finest playing standards all year round.

The Club has recently staged the English Amateur Championships for the first time in 26 years and is pleased to announce its addition to the Regional open Qualifying schedule from2016 onwards. The only decision visitors have difficulty with is simply deciding which course to play – which perhaps explains why so many golfers come back each year to try their hand at a different challenge.

ST MELLION GOLF RESORT The Resort boasts a stunning AA 4* 80-bedroom hotel, Health Club & Spa, and a variety of dining experiences from the simple to the elegant in our award winning Restaurants. For golfers, St Mellion is renowned as one of the finest golf venues, being a regular in the Top 100 and having hosted 12 European Tour events. The Nicklaus Signature Course is amongst the finest golf courses anywhere and was the first European course personally designed by Jack Nicklaus, who was quoted saying “I knew it was going to be good, but not this good…It’s everything I hoped for and more”. Even for Nicklaus the course is unique, at 6,300 yards it is not a long course but inspired by Augusta, he created a UK version of Amen Corner. Holes 10 through to 13 are quite brilliant, both to play and to look at. St Mellion also has a “hidden gem”, the Kernow Course. Opened in 2010, it was a favourite with golfers straight away and a perfect compliment to the Nicklaus Course, offering wide fairways, big greens and as Today’s Golfer reviewed in 2012 “an outstanding course with a great blend of holes.” For the golfer St Mellion should be on everyone’s “Bucket List”.

ECCLESTON PARK GOLF CLUB Situated on the outskirts of Rainhill, less than two miles from Junction 7 of the M62, Eccleston Park’s convenient location within the north west’s motorway network means it is within easy reach of Liverpool, St Helens, Warrington and beyond. While not exceptionally long – it plays to 6,477 yards off the back tees – the course is far from easy, with water coming into play on several holes, so position off the tee is often more important than distance. The first, a 420-yard dog-leg par four, is a prime example of the examination on offer, with a pond in play on the corner of the dogleg, and a mid/long iron to a two-tiered green. The 190-yard eighth is a great short hole, with a stream snaking from the tee and widening out to a pond as it approaches the green, which causes a few nerves off the tee. Among the best holes on the back nine is the 560-yard par-five 14th, which features a large lake that must be carried by your approach to the green. Even long hitters will struggle to reach in two, so a lay up is often the best route to secure a birdie. The 18th century clubhouse offers the ideal place to sit back and unwind in comfort while watching others tackle the 18th. A number of different catering options are available for both before and after your round, including the ever-popular chef’s specials. Whichever option you choose, you are sure to be made to feel at home.

NAILCOTE HALL HOTEL & GOLF CLUB Nailcote Hall is the host venue for The Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship, which attracts top European Tour and Seniors Tour professionals and many star celebrities every year who love the challenges the Cromwell Course presents. Open since 1992, the 1,048-yard layout is similar in scale to the par-three course at Augusta, and is recognised as an even tougher challenge, in a beautiful Warwickshire parkland setting alongside the 17th century Jacobean Hall. A fabulous test of short game golf awaits all visitors, society group or corporate days, and the social nature of the course and facilities is sure to make any day memorable both on and off the course. This spring sees the opening of the new ‘Champions Pavillion’ clubhouse, which includes a pro shop, changing rooms, bar – named ‘Charley’s Bar’ in honour of Solheim Cup star Charley Hull – a 60-cover restaurant, and a balcony with views over the golf course. Following a recent extension, the hotel now offers 51 luxury bedrooms, with the new rooms including two suites, seven executive rooms, and two additional family rooms, while guests can also enjoy the superb leisure club, with pool, steam room and Technogym-equipped gym. The Oak Room Restaurant offers fine dining and private dining rooms and conference facilities, while a luxury marquee which can cater for up to 250 people, is also available for hire.
