A WARM WELCOME FOREWORD BY RICHARD BOXALL, SKY SPORTS COMMENTATOR AND FORMER EUROPEAN TOUR PROFESSIONAL
O
ne of the main attractions of golf, in my book at least, is the enormous variety of golf courses on which we are allowed to challenge ourselves – that and taking some money off my friends and colleagues! From parkland to heathland, links to cliff top layouts – we are literally spoilt for choice. During my travels on the European Tour with Sky Sports I am often faced with monstrous 7,500 yard venues that place too much emphasis on smashing a driver, so when I come back home in Surrey it’s refreshing to play more manageable courses, where you have a good chance of making birdie, providing you find the fairway with your tee shot. Bigger doesn’t mean better, so don’t overlook courses where the

par is 69 or the yardage barely gets above 6,000 yards – they are often the hardest to score well on. The job of organising a society or corporate golf day can sometimes seem like a tough one, given the vast array of courses to choose from and the huge number of considerations, such as catering, prizes, invitations and all the other essential items that appear on the golf day checklist, but it can also be a thrill, especially if you get to try out some of the courses in advance to see if they meet your demands. This handy guide aims to turn that job into a more pleasurable experience by listing a wide selection of venues to suit all skills levels and budgets. Clubs offering the most simple of nine hole parkland layouts
to the most challenging 54 hole championship resorts – and a lot more in between – are all within easy reach of your fingertips and a phone call or a click of a mouse. All the clubs featured are here to help your golf day a success. With detailed course description, package prices, details of facilities, contacts and those all important directions, they’ve listed everything need to know to get your day off to a flyer. So let your fingers do the walking – hopefully your clubs do the talking – at one of the many and varied venues that follow. Happy golfing and my all your putts find the cup – eventually. BUILT TO ENHANCE
Advanced planning and little bit of foresight will allow you to get the most from your corporate or society golf day when it finally arrives.
THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BOOKING YOUR GOLF DAY
T
HE FIRST QUESTION: Do you want to play one or two rounds? What type of competition (singles, Stableford, greensomes, four ball better ball or foursomes)? Most clubs these days will restrict societies to these formats and you’ll find it difficult to arrange medal rounds. If you favour two rounds, most golfers prefer to avoid a full three-course midday meal, so to ensure the right conditions, choose golf clubs that are able and willing to provide, say, a ploughman’s lunch followed by an evening meal. Due to business commitments, some people may find it difficult to attend for a whole day, so if you adopt this suggestion, you’ll increase your potential afternoon attendance, and can round off the day with a prize giving after the evening meal. The golfing ability of your membership is another point you must take into account. If you
PAGE 15 | THE ULTIMATE GOLF GUIDE
have a high percentage of high handicap players, they won’t want you to select a difficult course. Your objective should always be to offer the prospect of a good, challenging course that is within their capabilities, rather than inadvertently inflicting a demoralising experience upon the unsuspecting. And then, there’s the cost. While we all like to play the Wentworths, Sunningdales and the like, if you do
your homework you’ll find plenty of superb courses in this guide which will provide your society with all the facilities you require. A good day’s golf enjoyed by all at a reasonable price is your guarantee of success. YOU’RE HALFWAY THERE. Next decision – the attention to detail. Right, now let’s assume you’ve received confirmation of your booking from the selected club.
You’ve been allocated reserved teeoff times, and chosen the menu. Most clubs will also send you a map showing their location, together with the club rules, which should, of course, be respected and observed by all participants. Approximately three to seven days prior to your visit, the steward or secretary will want to know your exact numbers for catering purposes, so it’s advisable for you to post a written notice of your meeting to all members at least three weeks ahead. The more detailed information you can put in your notice, the better, e.g. meeting time, reserved tee-off times, format, catering arrangements, prizes, club rules and etiquette, map, and cost of the day. It’s a good idea to have a simple reply form enclosed with your notice, which will enable your members to respond quickly, and to indicate if
they intend to bring a guest. Come the big day – your having arrived at the clubhouse at 8.30am – if you’re not careful you’ll suddenly be besieged by eager golfers, asking who their playing partners are and in what order they should tee off. The easy and simple solution is to prepare a list of order of play the night before the meeting. Mind you, even that’s not foolproof, because inevitably someone is bound to be late or have some last-minute problem that prevents him or her from turning up on time. One way to deal with this situation is to ask one of the committee members – who is prepared to tee off late – to rearrange the starters’ list according to those already present. Last, but by no means least, don’t forget to appoint a match official – preferably someone who
has teed off early. You’ll need him or her to collect all the cards for the morning and afternoon rounds, and to sort out the results. People who quite voluntarily accept the responsibility of organising society days deserve tremendous admiration. It requires a great deal of hard work, and this guide will enable you to pick the right venue for your society or company day. Happy golfing!

Whether out on the fabulous 18-hole parkland course or in the relaxing clubhouse, which overlooks the first and 10th tees, there is a sense of history and a wonderfully warm sensation of being completely at home. Situated in gently rolling countryside just two miles from central Croydon, the club feels like it’s in the middle of rural England, with mature tree-lined fairways and dense woodland, creating a natural amphitheatre on virtually every hole. The par-71, 6,357-yard parkland course, which was designed by Fred Hawtree and James Braid, extends up a valley in a series of gently-undulating loops. The course rewards accurate driving, and the well-placed bunkers and undulating greens provide an interesting challenge to golfers of all standards. Built on chalk soil, the course drains well, offering the opportunity of all year round golf, while it also offers an easy and enjoyable walk, and is seldom deemed unplayable, even in the harshest conditions. The comfortable clubhouse has a south-facing terrace, and the restaurant is renowned for serving high quality, home-cooked food. As Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie said on a recent visit: “Croham Hurst is one of the nicest courses in the South East of England.” There’s no better endorsement than that. EPSOM GOLF CLUB Epsom Golf Club, founded in 1889, has proven to be a popular venue for golf societies for many years. The 18 hole course is unique, offering a wide variety of holes which provide a challenge for golfers of all levels, and is renowned for its undulating greens that test even the smoothest of putters. An advantage of Epsom is that the course lies on the top of the North Downs and this brings two benefits: firstly, because the subsoil is chalk, the course is seldom affected by rain, and secondly, visitors enjoy stunning panoramic views of London. The clubhouse offers an intriguing mixture of the traditional – it happens to be the oldest purpose-built clubhouse in Surrey with a 100 year old snooker room – and the modern – spacious contemporary changing facilities and an indoor coaching studio with a GC2 golf simulator. The club’s catering team ensures a very high level of cuisine providing a wide range of fresh food options. Epsom can offer two alternatives for dining facilities away from the common areas. The club’s Committee Room is ideal for smaller parties whilst the Beamed Room can accommodate more than 70 people and offers fine views over the 18th hole. Traditions are strong at Epsom and one is to warmly welcome all visitors to this traditional members’ golf club. Epsom Golf Club, Longdown Lane South, Epsom, Surrey, KT17 4JR. Tel: 01372 741867. GATTON MANOR GOLF CLUB Set in 200 acres of tranquil and scenic Surrey countryside, Gatton Manor is a complete golf, business and leisure venue, only one hour from London, close to the West Sussex towns of Horsham and Crawley, and the Surrey towns of Dorking, Cranleigh and Guildford. The mature 18-hole woodland course was established in the late 1960s. Designed by Commander John D Harris, no two holes are alike and the Commander has made imaginative use of streams, lakes and tree lined fairways. This is a course to be respected; a good scorecard can be suddenly ruined if the challenges of each hole are not carefully considered. Try the 17th hole for your longest drive challenge. KINGSWOOD GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB The course at Kingswood was designed in 1928 by one of the great triumvirate and Open Champion, James Braid. Recent renovations retained the classic features of Kingswood but several changes were implemented to make the course more challenging, adjusting to today’s longer hitters. The work has been hailed as a great success and has introduced the all-important risk and reward choices on each hole, which makes Kingswood such a joy to play. It is a true championship course and was selected as a qualifying course for the 2011 Seniors Open and hosted the Surrey Amateur Championship in 2014 and PGA Surrey Open for the past two years. 2014 saw the opening of our Lodge complex of 18 bedrooms and the complete refurbishment of the men’s and ladies’ changing room facilities. The beauty of holding your golf day at Kingswood is our understanding that with golf days there is no universal formula. Flexibility is paramount and whether your visit is for business or pleasure we will find a package that will suit all budgets. We guarantee your guests won’t go hungry, from bacon rolls, breakfast feasts and delicious buffet lunches to fine dining, our catering can be as simple or as stylish as you wish. The halfway hut also provides a handy stop on course to keep rumblings at bay. Kingswood’s professional and friendly staff will be on hand to ensure your day runs smoothly from start to finish. With the club being located less than 5 miles inside the M25, Kingswood is now one of the ‘Must Play’ clubs in the South East. Kingswood Golf & Country Club, Sandy Lane, Kingswood, Surrey, KT20 6NE. SELSDON PARK HOTEL & GOLF CLUB Selsdon Park Hotel & Golf Club is a traditional, mature parkland golf course cut from the original thick forest that dominated this part of Surrey when the course was first designed by JH Taylor, five times winner of the British Open, in 1929. The elevated greens and fairways lined with countless sycamore, beech, oak, silver birch and cedar trees, all make Selsdon a truly memorable course to play. During the last two years, Selsdon has refocused itself at all levels, with the golf course being just one of it’s many developments. Work has included reshaping the course, designing a new bunker appearance, introducing new fauna with wild flowers and the vast woodland management project. In total the course has five par-5 holes, four of which measure over 500 yards. This need not be an intimidating experience, all but one of the nine par-4 holes are less than 400 yards and two of them are under 300 yards, so whether you are a handicapper or scratch player, Selsdon Park Hotel & Golf Club will give you the opportunity to dust down all of your clubs! The course stretches 6368 yards, a challenging par 72.

RICHMOND PARK GOLF COURSE Why not make your next society outing a day you will never forget by enjoying a round of golf in London’s historic Royal Park. Following a £3 million refurbishment in 2014, Richmond Park Golf Course is now the ideal society venue, with two 18-hole golf courses, academy course, driving range and a brand new clubhouse featuring contemporary restaurant. The location of the new clubhouse is now just off the A3 and only a 10-minute drive from the M25. At 5,487 yards, the par 68 Prince’s is the shorter of the two courses and is more undulating, offering wonderful elevated views over Richmond Park’s 3,000 acres. The refurbishment of the courses involved the construction of many new greens and bunkers. Built on the lower part of the estate, the Duke’s Course is a more challenging 6,369 yards (par 71) and features several water hazards and the park’s ancient brook, to test all aspects of your golf. Before and after a round, golfers can relax in the contemporary clubhouse, which offers a host of superb facilities, including the Nineteen Bar & Kitchen serving high quality food and drinks throughout the day. Society packages can be customised to suit guest needs. Add a Full English Breakfast for £2.50 extra, play an additional nine holes for £10, or give your guests a golfing goodie bag for £6? CHISLEHURST GOLF CLUB Founded in 1894 and situated within 70 acres of magnificent parkland in the heart of Chislehurst, just 11 miles south-east of Central London, Chislehurst Golf Club is steeped in history. The jewel in the crown is the spectacular clubhouse Camden Place which dates to 1717 and was, for a while during the 1870s, the home of Napoleon III, Empress Eugenie and their son the Prince Imperial. The course will challenge golfers of all abilities, consistent with the design influences of the great Harry S Colt. It possesses a charm quite distinctively its own, offering visitors to the Club an all-round experience to remember. The course, which is widely regarded as one of Colt’s ‘hidden gems’, is a challenging test of accuracy rather than length and uniquely there are eight par-3s to tackle, each one of them a potential scorecard wrecker. With tree-lined fairways as well as hills and dales to negotiate during your round, you also have to tackle the excellent and undulating greens, all meaning that you take the course lightly at your peril. A society outing to Chislehurst guarantees you a magnificent time on and off the course and not just in the summer, when a west-facing terrace is ideal for relaxing over a drink and a meal while recounting tales of golfing glory from the day, watching colleagues putt out on the 18th green.

LEEDS CASTLE GOLF COURSE Visitors never forget their first breath-taking vision of “the loveliest castle in the world” Leeds Castle in Kent, rising majestically from the moat as it has done for over 900 years. This historical nine hole, par 34, 2843 yard course was built on the 500 acre Leeds Castle Estate in 1931 by Sir Guy Campbell. The maturity of the Kent parkland surrounding the Castle provides both challenging and spectacular holes from start to finish. In 2014, the Ryder Cup trophy returned to Leeds Castle for the first time in 77 years as part of the golf course’s first 9 hole Pro-Am Tournament. Leeds Castle offers ‘pay and play’ golf throughout the year, as well as ‘One Under Cards’–giving seven days of golf for the price of six or ‘Season Tickets’ for unlimited play valid for a year. Golf coaching is available for groups or individuals in half hour or nine hole playing sessions. Our PGA Professional Steve Purves has more than 30 years PGA qualified teaching and playing expertise. Intervals of ten minutes between tee-off times mean that the course is rarely congested. Our Pro Shop is fully stocked for all your golfing needs. There are also changing rooms with shower facilities and refreshments are available in the shop. Club and trolley hire available, golf societies and corporate golf days welcome. esigned by the same man that built Royal St George’s, and subsequently refined by renowned architects James Braid and Alister MacKenzie, and latterly Donald Steel and Peter Alliss, Littlestone is one of England’s most revered links courses. Host of the first Ladies
Championship in 1894, countless final qualifying tournaments for the Open, and numerous elite amateur events, Littlestone is steeped in golfing history. With the exception of some new back tees, visitors will find the course largely unchanged since MacKenzie’s day, and will discover a classic flat, fast-running links measuring 6,486 yards off the whites. From most tees everything is laid out in front of you, although there is the occasional semi-blind shot. Numerous deep and wellplaced bunkers and quick greens ramp up the challenge, while the closing stretch is among the most formidable to be found. As well as the Championship course, Littlestone also offers the Warren Course, a 5,242-yard, par 67 course that is a great introduction to links golf and is ideal for societies with a wide range of handicaps. Set on the edge of the famous Romney Marsh, the free-draining course offers fast-running fairways defined by natural dunes, thick rough and classic links bunkers. Societies are welcome on both courses, and in addition we can add to your day by providing range balls, a golf clinic, a welcome bag, one-to-one lessons or a host of other ideas to help you enjoy your day.

In 2013 the Club staged the English Amateur Championships for the first time in 26 years and in 2016 will host Regional Open Qualifying. The result is stunning – a majestic course that winds its way through the landscape incorporating natural streams, woodland, valleys and the many thousands of beautiful trees. ORCHARDLEIGH GOLF CLUB The country estate of Orchardleigh – which includes a Victorian mansion, an island church, boathouse and a number of other listed outbuildings – is the setting for an idyllic parkland course routed through mature trees. Designed in the mid1990s by Brian Huggett, in conjunction with Peter McEvoy, the championship layout offers a decent test on a site where water is in play on seven holes. The front nine is laid out on flatter land to the west of the clubhouse and the 414yard sixth is certainly the most challenging on the way out, with out of bounds to the left of a fairway that leads to a two tiered green.. The back nine is more undulating and the dogleg right 14th is a testing par-5 with wellplaced bunkers and trees. The maturity of the setting contrasts well against the modern, target golf design of the holes where greens have been constructed to USGA standard, while Orchardleigh’s practice facilities are first-class with a full-length covered range, bunkers and chipping and putting greens. Away from the course, the clubhouse offers a relaxed environment in which to enjoy a light snack, meal or drink, while there is a separate private room for society dining and evening functions.
