a warm welcome Foreword by EWEN MURRAY, Sky Sports commentator and Former European Tour Professional
O
ne of the main attractions of golf, in my book at least, is the enormous variety of golf courses on which we are allowed to challenge ourselves – that and taking some money off my friends and colleagues! From parkland to heathland, links to cliff-top layouts – we are literally spoilt for choice, all over the British Isles where you can be playing almost every type of course within a few miles of each other. During my travels on following the world’s best tournaments with Sky Sports I am often faced with monstrous 7,500-yard venues that place too much emphasis on smashing a driver, so when I come back home to West Sussex it is refreshing to play more manageable courses, where you have a good chance of making birdie, providing you find the fairway with your tee shot. Bigger doesn’t have to mean better, so don’t overlook courses where the par is 69 or the yardage barely gets above 6,000 PAGE 5 | THE ULTIMATE GOLF GUIDE
yards – they are often the hardest to score well on. We are also fortunate in golf that we have a handicapping system that allows the best to play with the rest. That means that society and corporate days can accommodate any standard of golfer, from the inexperienced hacker to the touring professional, and all levels in between. That’s why golf, in my eyes, remains the ultimate leveller. The job of organising a society or corporate golf day can sometimes seem like a tough one, given the vast array of courses to choose from and the huge number of considerations, such as catering, prizes, invitations, and all the other essential items that appear on the golf day checklist, but it can also be a thrill, especially if you get to try out some of the courses in advance to see if they meet your demands. This handy guide aims to turn that job into a more pleasurable experience by listing a wide selection of venues to suit all skills levels and budgets. Clubs offering the most simple of 9-hole parkland
layouts to the most challenging 36-hole championship resorts – and a lot more in between – are all within easy reach of your fingertips and a phone call or, in these times, a click of a mouse. Organising such days can be simplified by hiring a company to do it all for you, but with the help of this guide, you can save the expense and spend more on your clients instead. All the clubs featured are here to help make your golf day a success. With detailed course descriptions, package prices, details of facilities, contacts and those allimportant directions, they’ve listed everything you need to know to get your day off to a flyer. So let your fingers do the walking – and hopefully your clubs do the talking – at one of the many and varied venues that follow. Please remember to mention this guide when booking. The only thing that can’t be arranged is the weather! All the very best, Ewen

Advanced planning and little bit of foresight will allow you to get the most from your corporate or society golf day when it finally arrives.
things to consider WHEN booking your golf day
T
he first question: Do you want to play one or two rounds? What type of competition (singles, Stableford, greensomes, four ball better ball or foursomes)? Most clubs these days will restrict societies to these formats and you’ll find it difficult to arrange medal rounds. If you favour two rounds, most golfers prefer to avoid a full three-course midday meal, so to ensure the right conditions, choose golf clubs that are able and willing to provide, say, a ploughman’s lunch followed by an evening meal. Due to business commitments, some people may find it difficult to attend for a whole day, so if you adopt this suggestion, you’ll increase your potential afternoon attendance, and can round off the day with a prize giving after the evening meal. The golfing ability of your membership is another point you must take into account. If you have a high percentage of high handicap players, they won’t want PAGE 11 | THE ULTIMATE GOLF GUIDE
you to select a difficult course. Your objective should always be to offer the prospect of a good, challenging course that is within their capabilities, rather than inadvertently inflicting a demoralising experience upon the unsuspecting. And then, there’s the cost. While we all like to play the Wentworths, Sunningdales and the like, if you do your homework
you’ll find plenty of superb courses in this guide which will provide your society with all the facilities you require. A good day’s golf enjoyed by all at a reasonable price is your guarantee of success. You’re halfway there. Next decision – the attention to detail. Right, now let’s assume you’ve received confirmation of
your booking from the selected club. You’ve been allocated reserved tee-off times, and chosen the menu. Most clubs will also send you a map showing their location, together with the club rules, which should, of course, be respected and observed by all participants. Approximately three to seven days prior to your visit, the steward or secretary will want to know your exact numbers for catering purposes, so it’s advisable for you to post a written notice of your meeting to all members at least three weeks ahead. The more detailed information you can put in your notice, the better, e.g. meeting time, reserved tee-off times, format, catering arrangements, prizes, club rules and etiquette, map, and cost of the day. It’s a good idea to have a simple reply form enclosed with your notice, which will enable your members to
respond quickly, and to indicate if they intend to bring a guest. Come the big day – your having arrived at the clubhouse at 8.30am – if you’re not careful you’ll suddenly be besieged by eager golfers, asking who their playing partners are and in what order they should tee off. The easy and simple solution is to prepare a list of order of play the night before the meeting. Mind you, even that’s not foolproof, because inevitably someone is bound to be late or have some last-minute problem that prevents him or her from turning up on time. One way to deal with this situation is to ask one of the committee members – who is prepared to tee off late – to rearrange the starters’ list according to those already present. Last, but by no means least, don’t forget to appoint a match official – preferably someone who has teed off early. You’ll need him
or her to collect all the cards for the morning and afternoon rounds, and to sort out the results. People who quite voluntarily accept the responsibility of organising society days deserve tremendous admiration. It requires a great deal of hard work, and this guide will enable you to pick the right venue for your society or company day. Happy golfing!

Time to get social with the golfer’s network!
W
ith 20% of all time spent on the internet devoted to visiting social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, what is the golf industry doing to join in the fun? Enter TheSocialGolfer.com! First established in 2007, TheSocialGolfer (TSG) has over 3,000 registered users in the UK and more than 7,000 worldwide. Its aim is a simple one: to bring golfers of all levels together to meet up and play. However, as well as pairing golfers up with other players in their area, TSG also gives society organisers the opportunity to run all its competitions and golf days from one central point. No more remembering telephone numbers, emails address or handicaps – TSG tracks all this and allows organisers to update their members and their games schedule, at the touch of a button. Run by Essex-based Media Consultant Ian Mullins, TSG continues to grow from strength to strength. “There are 3.9m people playing golf in the UK, and only 1.2m belong to a golf club,” says Ian. “We believe more and more golfers are looking to extend the repertoire of courses they play, while more and more courses are welcoming visiting players and it’s our ambition to bring them together! He adds: “I joined TSG in its infancy, as I was finding it harder to rely on friends to play PAGE 17 | THE ULTIMATE GOLF GUIDE
when I wanted to. I soon found a whole new set of mates to play with and, with the danger of sounding like Victor Kiam, I loved it so much, I bought the website!” So how does it work? Firstly, members – who pay no fees to join the site – build their golfing profile by entering in their postcode and handicap. The system then recognises every time a game is posted in a member’s chosen catchment area and emails them an invitation to join other members for the game. Hit the email link on your laptop or phone and your profile image automatically appears on the game page and alerts the organiser you are attending. Turn up on the day, pay your green fee, and away you go. At the time of going to press, TSG had more than 50+ ‘live’ games available to join in London and the South East alone. In addition, every member can track their scores and keep an eye on their friends/society members’ progress too. The system allows
users to print their own TSG handicap certificate, which is widely accepted at golf clubs across the country as proof of playing ability, while the scoring system also automatically enters users into a monthly league table, where members can win the much soughtafter TSG white shirt. Running societies has never been easier with TSG. Organsiers can post the calendar of games on the site, run league tables, and limit the access to their societies members only. However, if organisers are looking to expand, then you can post ‘open events’ or you can email existing TSG members via the internal email messaging system and the forums. The site is FREE to join and only charges a £20 annual fee for the PRO account – a welcome and affordable service in these recessionary times! For more information please visit:

carnoustie golf links One of the World’s Best Golf Courses. The Carnoustie Championship course needs no introduction to golfers and is widely regarded as one of the finest golf courses in the world. Since 1931 it has hosted a total of seven Open Championships with Padraig Harrington winning the latest in 2007. The huge reputation of the Championship course tends to mask the fact that there are a further two fine courses in Carnoustie – the Burnside and Buddon Links. All three courses are rated in the top 50 links courses in the UK and Ireland (Golf Digest June 2011). The Burnside course has been used as an Open Qualifying venue on a number of occasions and it was there the legendary Ben Hogan began his successful quest to win the Championship back in 1953. At 6,028 yards it is not long by modern standards, but it is still a fine test for amateur golfers of all levels, not least because of a host of strategically-placed pot bunkers that are a trademark of all three of Carnoustie’s layouts. The Buddon Links is Carnoustie’s newest course. It was designed by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas in the 1980s and has since been extensively upgraded. The opportunity to play three great courses in one location, make Carnoustie an ideal base for a visiting society.

The Roxburghe Golf Course The Roxburghe Championship Golf Course was conceived by The Duke of Roxburghe, an avid golfer who commissioned Dave Thomas to design and construct this challenging Scottish Borders golf course on the Roxburghe estate. The course was opened in 1997 and Thomas’s design bears his distinct hallmark of deep challenging bunkers and large rolling greens. The wide fairways of the course follow the natural contours of the landscape and make full use of the many changes in levels. The signature hole is “Viaduct”, an elevated tee commanding superb views over the River Teviot that hugs the left of the fairway with an imposing viaduct running across the horizon. The heart of the Roxburghe course are the par threes, play these well and you will hopefully card a good score as three of them are around the 190 yards mark. Roxburghe Golf Club and Championship Golf Course has always extended a warm Scottish Borders welcome to visiting golfers, golf clubs and golf societies from the UK and around the world. Our experienced golf professionals, event organisers and clubhouse staff are here to ensure your golf day runs smoothly and successfully. We enjoy a high level of repeat business which reflects the dedication of our staff and the exciting challenge of our championship golf course here at Roxburghe Golf Club. We can cater for the needs of all group sizes from 8 to 60 plus and our golf event packages can be tailored to suit small groups, corporate golf days and private events. Camberley Heath golf club Camberley Heath Golf Club is a challenging and traditional golf course featuring an abundance of pine and heather that is regarded as a true classic amongst heathland golf courses in Surrey. Designed by the legendary Harry Colt, the natural contours of our picturesque, tree-lined layout have been used to create a magnificent golfing experience that has been enjoyed by our Members for almost a century. The excellence of the course is coupled with the magnificent Clubhouse and friendly Members. The course benefits from a sustained programme of conservation and management. The original features have been preserved and enhanced, using modern greenkeeping methods and machinery. A forestry and heathland conservation programme is in place, and the club’s policy is to ensure the long-term future of its outstanding asset. The sandy heathland has excellent drainage properties, resulting in fine yearround golfing conditions. Our own natural resource, a bore hole, provides a comprehensive irrigation system serving tees, fairways and greens. There are no weak holes, but one of the most memorable is the last, which requires an accurate drive over a mountain of heather to a hidden landing point. Ball found, the second is to an elevated green in front of the Clubhouse where distance judgement is paramount so as not to upset the Members enjoying a post-round drink! The back nine features a winding brook that comes into play on several holes, including the testing par-three 10th, where the green is located on the other side of the water, with the 170-yard shot played from an elevated tee, making correct club selection paramount. Whether out on the fabulous 18-hole parkland course or in the relaxing clubhouse, which overlooks the first and 10th tees, there is a sense of history and a wonderfully warm sensation of being completely at home. LALEHAM golf club Surrey’s hidden gem is nestled on a picturesque and historic bank of the River Thames between Laleham and Chertsey. Laleham Golf Course is a challenging 18-hole parkland course that stands on 100 acres of meadowland only 15 minutes from Heathrow Airport. Jack White, Open Champion in 1904, designed the course, and at just under 6,300 yards it provides a fair but testing challenge to golfers of all standards. With five par 3s and three par 5s, the flat terrain ensures that a round – or even two – can be enjoyed with reasonable ease. The par-70 course is filled with challenging holes, by way of narrow fairways and tight shots into the undulating greens. Noted for its outstanding year-round condition, Laleham is also known locally for its excellent drainage, and for always being open when other courses close due to the weather conditions. The course is over 100 years old and many holes place a premium on the accuracy of your tee shot. While it is not a forest course, there are plenty of fully mature trees to enclose certain holes. To spice it up further, the bunkers tend to be deep and pot hole styled and wouldn’t look out of place on a links. Laleham Golf Club is proud of its reputation as a friendly and welcoming club placing great emphasis on societies feeling at home from the moment they arrive.

North Downs golf club Probably the highest golf course in the south of England, North Downs is located on top of the hill in the pretty village of Woldingham. It was founded in 1899 as a nine-hole course and extended to 18 holes in 1971, allowing the layout to be substantially altered. At 5,815 yards off the back tees, it might not be the longest course you’ll ever play, but don’t underestimate the challenge of getting around without too many blemishes on your scorecard. The result is a course where accuracy, particularly on the par 4s, is a pre-requisite to good scoring. Despite being 850 feet up in the folds of the North Downs, the terrain is pretty gentle, although one climb is required. Fortunately, it’s on the 17th, when golfers’ thoughts are already turning to a drink and a bite to eat at the 19th. The views over the surrounding countryside are superb, and the course is always in good condition, even during the depths of winter, when only a blanket of snow has been known to close it down. The club has a reputation for friendliness, which is extended to societies, who can choose from a variety of packages at competitive rates. Full catering is available in the dining room, and a well-stocked pro shop adds to the pleasure of visiting one of Surrey’s hidden gems.

REDHILL & Reigate golf club Our course was established in 1887 making it the second oldest in Surrey. In the 1920s it was redesigned by James Braid, a Scotsman who won the Open Championship five times before becoming an equally successful golf course architect. Visitors should not be misled by the par 68 on the scorecard. The 18 holes meander through the picturesque tree-lined countryside to provide an interesting test of golf for even golf professionals. It may only say 5,272 yards on the scorecard, but it plays much longer. An accurate long game and sharp short game will earn their reward. There are some tricky par threes and a range of par fours which are accessible only to the longest hitters. Among the features are exacting dog-legs and the tantalising 464-yard par 4 which few can reach in two. All holes benefit from excellent greens reckoned to be some of the best in the country. We are keen to showcase our wonderfully picturesque course and to encourage sport we offer a scale of fees.

Selsdon Park Hotel & Golf Club Selsdon Park Hotel & Golf Club is a traditional, mature parkland golf course cut from the original thick forest that dominated this part of Surrey when the course was first designed by JH Taylor, five times winner of the British Open, in 1929. The elevated greens and fairways lined with countless sycamore, beech, oak, silver birch and cedar trees, all make Selsdon a truly memorable course to play. During the last two years, Selsdon has refocused itself at all levels, with the golf course being just one of it’s many developments. Work has included reshaping the course, designing a new bunker appearance, introducing new fauna with wild flowers and the vast woodland management project. In total the course has five par-5 holes, four of which measure over 500 yards. This need not be an intimidating experience, all but one of the nine par-4 holes are less than 400 yards and two of them are under 300 yards, so whether you are a handicapper or scratch player, Selsdon Park Hotel & Golf Club will give you the opportunity to dust down all of your clubs! The course stretches 6,473 yards, a challenging par 73, and takes around four hours to complete.

Tandridge Golf club Tandridge Golf Club in Surrey is a very friendly members’ club with a first-class Harry Colt course and catering to match. The quality of this fine and varied parkland design is recognised by its inclusion in the 2010 listings of Golf Monthly’s Top 200 courses in the UK & Ireland, and there are two quite distinct loops of nine which offer the golfer a complete contrast with something new on offer from every tee. The holes on the front nine are strategic with some demanding dog-legs whilst the more undulating back nine offers thrilling twists and turns along with views that are spectacular and panoramic. Quite recently, the front nine has also benefitted from a major upgrade designed to align Colt’s principles with today’s technology, whilst at the same time making it even more attractive and enjoyable. The results have met with universal praise from members and visitors alike. When Olympic silver medallist Steve Cram held his charity event at the club in 2010, he said, “Put the most positive quote that you can and put my name against it!” Just five minutes from the M25, the traditional, cosy and beautifully-appointed clubhouse is home to mouth-watering catering that keeps visitors coming back for more. heart of Chislehurst, just 11 miles south-east of Central London, Chislehurst clubhouse Camden Place which dates to 1717 and was, for a while during Prince Imperial. The course will challenge golfers of all abilities, consistent with the design influences of the great Harry S Colt. It possesses a charm quite distinctively its own, offering visitors to the Club an all-round experience to remember. The course, which is widely regarded as one of Colt’s ‘hidden gems’, is a challenging test of accuracy rather than length and uniquely there are eight par-3s to tackle, each one of them a potential scorecard wrecker. With tree-lined fairways as well as hills and dales to negotiate during your round, you also have to tackle the excellent and undulating greens, all meaning that you take the course lightly at your peril. A society outing to Chislehurst guarantees you a magnificent time on and off the course and not just in the summer, when a west-facing terrace is ideal for relaxing over a drink and a meal while recounting tales of golfing glory from the day, watching colleagues putt out on the 18th green.

tenterden golf CLUB Set in mature parkland, Tenterden Golf Club boasts spectacular views over the Weald of Kent. You will need all your golfing skills to tame this deceptively challenging and recently lengthened course, but you are ensured a stimulating golfing experience. The club’s policy of continuous improvement has reaped it’s rewards on the course and the ground staff should be proud of their ability to keep the course in such excellent condition throughout the year. A number of holes represent a special challenge, notably the 8th, a dog leg par 4, where the first shot must be straight and the correct length to have any chance of reaching the elevated green with a second shot. At 479 yards, the 12th, is one of the longest par 4’s in Kent, from the elevated tee you are rewarded for distance and accuracy, but the over-ambitious can be punished. The improved clubhouse is comfortable and the atmosphere relaxed and friendly. From the veranda you can enjoy a drink while overlooking play on the 1st and 18th holes. A variety of menus and light refreshments are available from the bar, while group dining can benefit from our versatile catering service. Golf Societies are always given a warm welcome and some excellent packages are available, especially at later tee-off times. The emphasis at Tenterden is on golf, not weddings and functions – although the club happily hosts numerous large charity Golf Days as well as the Golf Society Championship 2012. Old Thorns Manor Hotel, Golf & Country Estate Old Thorns’ championship layout occupies a stunning spot on the rolling hills of the North Hampshire countryside and offers fantastic views at every turn. Mature trees, lakes and testing bunkers give real character to the course which, while kind to the less experienced golfer, holds some surprises for the player who enjoys a challenging round in a classic English landscape. The superbly-maintained par 72 course was designed by Peter Alliss, Honorary President of the club, and renowned architect Dave Thomas, who completed the construction of the course in 1981. A year later its official inauguration saw Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus, Isao Aoki and 1981 Open Champion Bill Rogers play a four-ball match. As well as a large fleet of golf buggies, golfers can take advantage of a spacious, well-stocked professional’s shop run by a team of resident PGA professionals, which is on hand to take care of your every golfing need, including offering lessons and clinics. Practice facilities include a driving range and a putting green. Pyecombe golf club From the very first tee, with a tricky second shot to a green which appears to be ‘in the clouds’, right through to the 18th downhill – a dogleg right – there are many excellent and demanding holes. The 421-yard, par-four third hole is particularly magnificent, threading its way down the valley to a tight landing area and back up to the well protected green, as is the par-three eighth, with its elevated tee across the valley to the awaiting green - or the three pot bunkers in front! The par-five ninth, snaking its way through the beautiful South Downs countryside, is a delight to play, while the fiendish green to the 223-yard 13th is a tough test for the best of golfers. Though it’s not all about the golf; even when not playing well, you can still enjoy some of the best scenery in the South of England, and some pretty good hospitality as well. The clubhouse offers a good selection of food and drink at competitive prices and a friendly ambience that you would expect from a club that is proud to have had the renowned Henry Longhurst as a former President and neighbour when he lived in one of the well-known Jack and Jill windmills that overlook the Club’s 16th green.

SLINFOLD GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB Slinfold Golf & Country Club lies just west of the historic village of Horsham in beautiful Sussex parkland. Designed and opened in 1992, the Club has recently undergone a £4m clubhouse development, making it one of the most popular Membership and Golf Day destinations in the area. The Club has played host to the Southern Professional Championship on two separate occasions, whilst also having the privilege of hosting a number of County matches. The course itself is set amongst mature oak trees and strategically placed water hazards, and is the ideal society venue at just under 6,500 yards, with four Par 3s and four Par 5s. The 16th hole requires a testing iron shot over water, whilst the signature 10th hole requires a knee-knocking drive from the island tee in front of the clubhouse! The greens are built to ‘sand based USGA spec’, and so along with the tees are designed for all round use, whilst there is a driving range, a putting green and a ‘warm up area’ to help get you started on your golf day. Clubhouse improvements boast a new state-of-the-art Gym, Swimming Pool, Jacuzzi Spa and Steam Room which visitors are welcome to use. The welcoming Bar has ‘spike bar’ facilities, whilst catering is available through into the evening.

STONEHAM golf club Laid out in an undulating deer park, Stoneham provides a beautiful, yet challenging, setting in which to play golf. One of the South’s hidden gems, it is a particular favourite of Peter Alliss, who played here regularly in the 50s and 60s when the Club frequently hosted professional tournaments. The course offers a combination of heathland and parkland, with the rolling landscape testing every aspect of the golfer’s armoury from the tee to subtle yet quick greens. Improvements in the quality of the course in recent years ensure that the course is always in immaculate condition and never uses temporary greens. The recently-refurbished clubhouse is the perfect place to relax either side of your round, whilst enjoying a drink from the bar and sampling the excellent produce provided by our caterers. The views over the course to the rolling countryside beyond from the patio provide the perfect backdrop to enjoy your post golf refreshments and muse over what might have been during your round. When it comes to visiting golfers, whether society or corporate, nothing is too much trouble, and your day will be customised to suit you, not us. Anything is possible: all you have to do is ask. The Club’s location to the north of Southampton and only five minutes from the M3/M27 motorway network makes it an ideal location to hold a business meeting in our boardroom before rewarding yourself and your clients with lunch and a round of golf.

worthing golf club Worthing Golf Club boasts two spectacular Downland Courses. One of the main features shared by both of the courses is the very free draining chalk which gives golfers the luxury of almost no temporary greens or days lost to the weather. Couple with this the breathtaking views to the English Channel, the South Downs and the abundant wildlife and Worthing provides a golfing experience to remember. The Lower course is recognised as one of the best Downland courses in the South of England, set in the southern slope of the South Downs. At 6505 yards in length it provides a fair test of golf. The greens are one of the main challenges on the course where a good score can be made or lost. The Upper course is in complete contrast to the Lower, it has smaller greens, narrower fairways and is shorter in length at only 5211 yards, but what it lacks in length it makes up for in the need for accurate shot selection and positional play. We welcome visitors to enjoy all of the facilities the Club has to offer. Our dedicated and friendly team of staff prides itself on providing a level of customer service matched only by the comfort of the surroundings.

Cambridge Meridian golf club Cambridge Meridian Golf Club is so called because it straddles the Greenwich Meridian Line – just one of 10 courses in the world to do so. Golfers cross the line seven times during a round on this stunning 18-hole championship course, which sits on a glorious 210-acre site between the villages of Toft and Comberton, just five miles west of Cambridge. Designed by the legendary Peter Alliss and Clive Clark – and widely regarded as their best UK project – the 6,700-yard, par 73 layout offers a stern scoring test for the lowest of handicaps, but its generous fairways make it pleasantly playable for all. Reminiscent of a links course in places, it combines classic golf with modern golfing challenges. The USGA-standard greens offer true putting surface all year round and the triple-tiered fifth green is one you’ll never forget. The club offers a warm welcome to societies and corporate groups, large and small. Channels golf club Set in over 300 acres of undulating parkland just north of Chelmsford, Channels boasts stunning views of the Essex countryside and is the perfect venue for a society or corporate golf day. Established back in 1974, when the original nine holes were opened, the club now boasts a 27-hole complex. The well-maintained and challenging par-71, 6,402-yard Channels course is a lightly-bunkered, undulating layout, which starts out on flat meadowlands for the first four holes, before moving onto the challenge of holes built over an award-winning quarry restoration project, where water provides a stern defence. Few holes typify the ‘Channels challenge’ more than the 17th, which has water between tee and green. The shorter 4,779-yard Belsteads course, which has a par of 67, offers two sets of tees, allowing for plenty of variety over an 18-hole round. The excellent facilities are further enhanced by the 14th century farmhouse, which is home to the relaxing clubhouse, and houses two meeting rooms and the renowned brasserie restaurant. Alongside the clubhouse is the main function suite, the 18th-century thatched Essex barn. Capable of seating 120 people for dinner, it is an ideal venue for corporate functions and weddings. Breadsall Priory A Marriott Hotel & Country Club Standing in over 300 acres of parkland, near the Peak District National Park, Breadsall Priory, A Marriott Hotel & Country Club offers contrasting 36 holes of golf in beautiful surroundings. The two par 70 courses, the Priory and the Moorland, are both popular with members and visitors, not least because they offer a combination of exciting golf coupled with superb views over the surrounding area. The Priory Course winds its way around the 13th century priory building and whilst relatively short by modern standards, don’t let that mislead you because it is also tight and tree-lined and offers a real test to all but the most accurate strikers. In contrast to the parkland Priory, the Moorland is a heathland course that sits on an adjacent hillside. It is ideal for year round golf and affords fine views out over the Derbyshire countryside. The Golf Course at just over 6100 yards, and always in good condition, is deceptively tricky with its small greens and numerous water hazards. The Club has played host to Europro and Jamega Tour Events and the Pro’s have certainly found it to be a test. The Par 3’s are a feature with the signature hole being the 16th. The Par 4 12th is also a memorable hole. It is certainly a thinker’s course and Driver isn’t always the answer off the tee. The Golf Course is backed up by a welcoming Club House with quality food and service provided. Many Societies return year after year due to the friendly welcome they receive. The Players club The Players Club opened in 2002 yet, despite its young age, has staged The Europro Tour nine times and West Region PGA championships four times. From the championship tees it can be stretched to 7,663 yards, making it one of the longest courses in Europe, although members and guests normally play the par 72 Codrington layout at around 6,300 yards. A mixture of links and heath with a touch of Americana, it’s quite hard to pigeon-hole. With two returning nines, superb short game area and practice area, the club boasts two other courses with the delightful par 3 Watergarden course set across picturesque ponds and lakes, many have likened it to the Augusta par three course and it is a great inclusion in your golf day, taking about 45 minutes to play. A second 18-hole layout has been recently added, The Stranahan, designed like its bigger brother by Adrian Stiff, is a quirky 5,500-yarder that gets golf back to a three-hour round. The course is dominated by interesting greens that defend themselves with humps and hollows. All the courses have USGA greens and irrigation on fairways. Also part of the clubs portfolio are seven country cottages some 20 minutes away in Wootton-Under-Edge. Golf-Hotel de Saint-Saens golf course Situated between Rouen and Dieppe, in the heart of a natural wooded park of 200 acres, Saint-Saens Golf Course is unique in Normandy. This course offers a large variety of holes, with its three distinct sections; an entertaining mixture of valley holes (with water), forest (with tree-lined and panoramic tees) and high plateau (with wide and generous fairways). The first five holes are in the valley, just below the chateau clubhouse. Water is present and part of the game. The following forest holes meander through the woodland, taking advantage of its natural opening and breathtaking views. From the 12th, with their generous fairways, the plateau holes are tempting for the longer hitters – but these holes can be difficult when the wind, bunkers, doglegs and roughs come into game. On the 17th, it’s back to a tree-lined fairway and the 18th gives you a lovely finishing par-four hole with a magnificent view of the chateau. The chateau hotel has seven comfortable rooms, all overlooking the beautiful countryside and golf course and our new modern hotel, situated only 100 metres from the clubhouse, opened 13 further rooms in 2008. Saint-Saens will be proudly celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. This course has reached the standard of many mature parkland courses in the south of England. With excellent dining facilities in the restaurant and one of the warmest welcomes in France, Saint-Saens is the perfect blend of picturesque and diverse, making it an entertaining, but not too testing holiday golf course. We were planning to spend a few hours on the beach this week.
Right now, I just can’t remember why. I like the beach. We all do. And when we were planning this golf trip, we all talked about spending some time hanging out at the beach. After all, South Carolina has some of the nicest beaches in the world. But then we got here and started playing. Now the only sand I’m interested in is the kind I try to avoid. And the beaches, nice as they may be, are going to have to wait.
