Welcome

SCOTLAND – A LAND OF GOLFING CONSTRASTS GOLF NEWS EDITOR NICK BAYLY EXTOLS THE VIRTUES OF A GOLF BREAK TO SCOTLAND, WHERE STAMINA-SAPPING OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP VENUES RUB SHOULDERS WITH 9-HOLE PITCH AND PUTTS

I’LL NEVER FORGET THE ROUNDS I USED TO ENJOY WITH MY MOTHER AT KEMNAY GOLF CLUB BACK IN THE EARLY 1980s. THEN AGED 13, AND LIVING JUST OUTSIDE ABERDEEN, WE WOULD DROP A FEW POUNDS IN THE HONESTY BOX AND PLAY NINE HOLES IN GLORIOUS ISOLATION

W

ith a population of just five million and a total of 587 golf clubs, it’s fair to say that the citizens of Scotland are spoilt for choice when it comes to where to play the game they claim to have invented. From the five Open Championship venues with three-figure green fees, to the nine-hole courses with honesty boxes, there are few countries in the world that can match Scotland for the diversity of its golf offering. Despite the embarrassment of riches on their doorstep, the Scots are a generous lot – forget the lazy stereotype – and generously welcome all and sundry to share the wealth of links course, parkland tracks, and clifftop beauties that are to be enjoyed in its wonderfully unpopulated countryside. I’ve had the good fortune to play quite a few them in my two score years of golfing, including all the major championship layouts, a Ryder Cup course, a Solheim Cup venue or two, and many an amateur championship host, but perhaps the ones I cherish the most boast far less exalted histories. For instance, I’ll never forget the rounds I used to enjoy with my mother at Kemnay Golf Club back in the early 1980s. Then aged 13, and living just outside Aberdeen, we would drop a few pounds in the

honesty box and play nine holes in glorious isolation. Mum, bless her, never liked to be rushed on the golf course, and never enjoyed having a group of stuffy old men watching her tee off, so midweek rounds on deserted courses like Kemnay suited her down to the ground. While Kenmay might not qualify as a hidden gem, it’s certainly part of the overall fabric of what makes golf in Scotland such a unique experience. And although the championship layouts are all worth ticking off your bucket list, you can have an equally enjoyable, and, dare I say it, cheaper time, by straying off the well-beaten tracks, and searching out some of the courses and clubs that don’t have their own Twitter feeds or

Facebook pages, but will leave just as many lasting golfing memories. With over 150 nine-hole courses to choose from alone in Scotland, you can rack up three or four clubs in a day if you plan your itinerary properly, especially during those glorious summer months when 18 hours of daylight allow the serious golfer time to tick off 72 holes in a day, and still leave time for a pie and a pint. So whether you have £20 or £200 to spend on a green fee, whether you’re a scratch golfer or struggle to break 100, and whether you’re looking for five-star luxury or a simple B&B for the night, there is something for everyone in Scotland – and you won’t have to look too far to find it.

TR ACKS OF MY

YEARS… FORMER OPEN CHAMPION PAUL LAWRIE PICKS HIS TOP FIVE FAVOURITE TRACKS IN HIS HOMELAND

CARNOUSTIE, ANGUS This would obviously have to come into the equation, wouldn't it? Not only because I won the Open there, but I've played it quite a lot over the years and it really is a fabulous test.

ROYAL ABERDEEN, ABERDEENSHIRE Again, I've played here a lot down the years, and it's underrated beyond belief. It successfully held this year's Scottish Open and everyone loved it. It's such a top course all year round that there wasn't an awful lot they've had to do to make it a European Tour venue.

TURNBERRY, AYRSHIRE An absolute classic – one of my favourites of all time to play. It's certainly held some great Open Championships, and has provided some great winners, which is always the sign of a great course.

GOLF IN PERTHSHIRE PERTHSHIRE IS THE HISTORIC AND geographic heart of Scotland, offering a compelling mix of heritage and cultural attractions, outdoor activities, resorts, attractive towns and villages - all set in stunning landscapes. With its varied topography, it is full of magnificent courses that prove beyond doubt, the best of Scottish golf is by no means restricted to the coast. It is home to some of Scotland’s finest golf courses including the world-class resort of Gleneagles, host to the 2014 Ryder Cup, the 2018 European Team Championships and the 2019 Solheim Cup. Breathtaking scenery surrounds our heathland courses and 9-hole gems in the Heart of Scotland. Play a relaxing round or experience a ■ GLENEAGLES KINGS 9TH HOLE

championship test in the natural beauty of the Perthshire Highlands with tranquil glens, lush forests and an incredible array of Scottish wildlife. The picturesque towns and villages throughout the region offer a great choice of accommodation and quality food and drink. Away from the course take time to discover the many things to see and do from malt whisky distilleries, historic castles, adventure sports to world-class fishing on the Rivers Tay and Tummel. Following its successful launch in 2016, the West Perthshire Golf Pass continues to offer unbeatable value at just £45.00 for 54-holes at a choice of 5 courses. Details of the pass and information on all you need to arrange your next golf break are available on our website. Now is the time to experience our affordable, accessible, relaxing and most importantly great fun golf in Perthshire!

www.golfperthshire.com

SKIBO CASTLE, SUTHERLAND My favourite place to go in the UK. The course, hotel and facilities are world class and the castle is beautiful, too.

HOPEMAN, ABERDEENSHIRE I used to play here with my dad and my brother when I was a kid, so it has lots of great memories. I’m honorary president now, which is a great honour. It’s located right by the Moray Firth, near Lossiemouth, and it features one of the best par threes I’ve ever played – the 12th. It’s only 150 yards long, but there’s a 100-foot drop from tee to green, with the sea on the right, and acres of gorse below.

SHISKINE, ISLE OF ARRAN A glance at the scorecard to see it has only 12 holes is just the start of this beguiling, quirky and utterly intoxicating golfing journey. From the blind shot up a steep hill to the par-3 Crow’s Nest, to the dramatic cliffside tee shot at the next, dropping all the way back down, this cult classic is a thrill ride from start to finish.

KILSPINDIE, EAST LOTHIAN Tucked away at the end of a private road that meanders along the shore of Aberlady Bay, Kilspindie is cherished by locals and tourists clued up enough to get in on the secret. It’s short, measuring less than 5,500 yards off the back tees, but this charming ancient links is a real throwback to the days of the mashie niblick and feather ball.

it’s a worthwhile pit stop en route to the Home of Golf, with the 5,450-yard course boasting the unique configuration of back-to-back par threes on the opening two holes, with the latter requiring a tee shot over the shoreline from a rocky outcrop to a green set yards from the water’s edge.

FORTROSE & ROSEMARKIE, ROSSHIRE Across the Moray Firth from Castle Stuart lies one of the quirkiest courses in Scotland. Perched on a narrow peninsula just 14 miles along the coast from Inverness, there’s a sea view everywhere you turn on this stunning 5,880-yard course. A regular host of the Scottish Ladies Seniors, it boast 14 par fours, 11 of which are under 400 yards. traditional ‘out and back’ links, with the natural rugged beauty of the front nine being particularly captivating, most notably the par-3 9th, at which the North Sea provides a lateral water hazard. Elsewhere, gently undulating fairways are criss-crossed by lurking burns, while electric fences around the greens serve to keep grazing cattle off the notoriously slick greens.

The seventh oldest club in the world, more than 200 years has done nothing to diminish Crail’s appeal as one of the most endearing links in Scotland. Too short to host a major championship, the 5,992-yard Balcomie course was designed by Old Tom Morris, who took maximum advantage of its exhilarating seaside location, with shots over rocky bays, long parthrees with greens perched on top of cliffs; curving par fours round sandy strands; and shots from raised tees to greens and fairways

ST FILLANS, PERTHSHIRE Sandy Lyle’s favourite inland course is located at the eastern end of Loch Earn, with the rolling highlands of Perthshire providing a stunning backdrop. The nine-hole course is spread out over flat, easy walking land, and is always presented in fantastic condition. If your golf’s not going well, just suck in the scenery and listen to the sound of stags rutting on the hillside.

Although famous for its fish and chip shops, the golf in this gorgeous little village is pretty tasty too. Spectacular views over the harbour and out to the Isle of May and Bass Rock are a constant distraction on this 9-hole gem, but it’s in your interest to concentrate. Especially at Anstruther’s version of Amen Corner, comprising a series of three challenging short holes starting with the 5th – The Rockies – a 254-yard par three whose path to the green is guarded by gorse and roughcovered banks on the right, and the Firth of Forth on the left.

STONEHAVEN, ABERDEENSHIRE Teetering on the edge of the Braes of Cowne, you’ll be hitting over the edge of cliffs that fall dramatically into the sea, crossing deep gorges onto tilted fairways and down steep hills. There’s even a bomb crater to negotiate, left during the Second World War by a German pilot lightening his load for the journey home. But ‘Hitler’s bunker’ is just one of countless dramatic features to enthrall on this cliff-top thrill ride that will live long in the memory.

One of the most demanding links courses in the North of Scotland, with fairways jealously guarded by gorse and broom.

With spectacular views over the Clyde estuary and the neighbouring islands of Cumbrae, Bute and Arran, this parkland course is among the best in Ayrshire. Nestled in an enviable spot between Kelburn Castle and the sea, the course’s manicured greens are the envy of many on the west coast. With lush fairways, meandering burns and treelined doglegs, the course offers a fair, but rewarding challenge.

Highlight is ‘The Prieshach’, the spectacular 12th hole, with its green nestling in the Clashach Cove over 100 feet below the tee, which Paul Lawrie, who is president of the club, rates as one of his favourite par threes in the world. OPEN FOR

■ 1ST HOLE ST ANDREWS

BUSINESS THE FIVE MIGHTY SCOTTISH LINKS ON THE CURRENT OPEN ROTA ST ANDREWS, MUIRFIELD, TROON, CARNOUSTIE AND TURNBERRY - HAVE BETWEEN THEM STAGED 65 OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS. FOR THIS SCOTLAND SPECIAL, WE’VE PUT TOGETHER WHAT WE RECKON TO BE AN UNBEATABLE COMPOSITE 18-HOLER, WITH THE ONLY RULE BEING THAT HOLE NUMBERS MUST BE AS THEY ARE ON THE CARD. SO BRACE YOURSELVES FOR A STIRRING RIDE OVER OUR 7,125-YARD SCOTTISH OPEN CLASSIC

1ST – ST ANDREWS PAR 4, 376 YARDS Where else could we start but the modestlength par four that gets you underway at the Home of Golf as you head out on to one of the world’s must-play courses. Yes, it may, in theory, be a wide-open field where you can hit it just about anywhere. But you’ll be feeling the pressure, as eyes will be watching you from somewhere whatever time of day you tee off. Few will go OOB left à la Ian Baker-Finch in 1995, but many do go OOB right, while the Swilken Burn just short of the green will often make its presence felt, especially into the wind.

3RD - CARNOUSTIE PAR 4, 351 YARDS Still no hole over 400 yards as we take on the short but deceptive 3rd at Carnoustie. This hole doglegs quite sharply to the right, with the two bunkers guarding the apex of the corner requiring a 247-yard carry to clear them both. Another bunker further down is better-placed to catch longer drivers taking the hole on, while a meandering stream – Jockie’s Burn, after which the hole is named – angles in from the left, before cutting across in front of the green and then slipping away to the right.

2ND - MUIRFIELD PAR 4, 367 YARDS Again, no great shakes on the scorecard, but this short par four at the western extremity of the links is a clever little hole flanked the entire length by a stone wall on the left. It probably won’t be driver unless you’re looking to take the hole on downwind, but any lay-up needs to be carefully considered, as fairway bunkers await either side. Up at the green, your desire to avoid the cluster of bunkers short right may see you end up in the hollow between green and boundary wall on the left, from where getting up and down is far from easy.

putting surface is protected by three pot bunkers, while hollows and steep runoffs await should you stray long, with the steepest of them back left and long right. Expect your short game and creativity to be tested to the full in the fairly likely scenario of missing this green.

5TH - TURNBERRY PAR 5, 531 YARDS This hole played as a long par 4 in the 2009 Open, and you may remember Ross Fisher coming a cropper here with a quadruple bogey when vying for the lead. It is a truly majestic hole, sweeping gently round to the left along a valley in the dunes that becomes increasingly steepsided the closer you get to the putting surface. The raised green is protected by several bunkers, especially short left, and the whole setting makes for a stirring approach shot, whether going for it in two, or adopting a more cautious strategy.

4TH - MUIRFIELD PAR 3, 229 YARDS The longest of Muirfield’s par 3s is a brilliant hole protected not only by sheer length, but also by its long, narrow, raised green, which only the purest, straightest tee shots will find. The front half of the

8TH – ROYAL TROON PAR 3, 123 YARDS 6TH - CARNOUSTIE PAR 5, 578 YARDS Ben Hogan’s Open record reads ‘played one, won one’ and that solitary trip across the Pond brought him to Carnoustie in 1953. On the tee, you may be able to see a golf course away to the left, but that is one of Carnoustie’s other courses, which is OOB when playing this hole. Nevertheless, in every round of that 1953 victory, Hogan chose to take the riskier left route between that OOB and the bunkers – now know as Hogan’s Alley - as it opened up a better angle towards the distant green. Gorse, a water hazard angling in from the right, and several greenside bunkers round off the test.

7TH - ST ANDREWS PAR 4, 371 YARDS ■ 5TH HOLE TURNBERRY

on the Old course with a hint of left-toright about it, although there is nothing to stop you firing one straight at the green – nothing, that is, apart from the huge Shell bunker at around the 300-yard mark with its vast acreage of sand and 6ft revetted face! The hole requires a decent carry to clear the gorse and rough from the tee, while the shallow green has some very interesting contours, and angles across you a little on a straight tee-to-green route.

After an opening string of essentially straight holes, this short par 4 is the first

The shortest, and some might say meanest, little hole on the Open rota is proof that par 3s don’t have to be 230+ yards to pose major problems – just ask Bubba Watson after his shenanigans in last year’s Open, when missing in the wrong place led to a comedy of errors and a triple-bogey six. That’s the problem with the ‘Postage Stamp’ – it may be but a wedge most days, but there are just too many ‘wrong places’ to miss, whether devious bunkers, hollows, mounds, banks or rough. And when you do miss, it’s all too easy to go from frying pan to fire.

9TH - TURNBERRY PAR 3, 248 YARDS Whatever you think of Mr Trump, there’s little doubt that the new par-3 9th on the redesigned Ailsa course – unveiled to the world last summer – is now an out-of-thisworld golf hole. The green set close to the famous lighthouse is generously sized,

■ 11TH HOLE TROON

and anything underclubbed runs the real risk of trundling back down some 30 or 40 yards towards the wide grass path running from tee to green.

as you might hope from pretty much 250 yards, but it’s heart-in-mouth time as you set one off over the rocky shoreline especially into the wind. It’s spectacular; it’s tough; and it’s sure to cause a stir when The Open next visits this part of the Ayrshire coast. Thankfully, forward tees are also available!

OUT – PAR 35, 3,174 YARDS

10TH - TURNBERRY PAR 5, 565 YARDS The 10th, teeing off from close to the lighthouse and hugging the shoreline to the left, was always one of Turnberry’s standout holes. Now it’s even better, with a new back tee serving up an even more daunting carry across the rocky shore, and the iconic doughnut bunker on the final approach reworked in a much less clinical and more attractive rough-edged style. This is pretty much as close as any Open rota hole gets to the lapping waves, and is a real treat to be savoured along this stunning stretch of holes on the new Ailsa course.

11TH – ROYAL TROON PAR 4, 483 YARDS

14TH - ST ANDREWS PAR 5, 618 YARDS

Even the top pros will admit that Open Championship par 4s don’t come much tougher than this intimidating hole early on Troon’s back nine. Your score simply has to be made heading out at Troon! The hole is christened ‘Railway’ as the tracks hug the right side just beyond the OOB fence and wall, but the most frightening thing is that the tee shot is played blind over a vast sea of gorse. If you shy too far away from the railway, more of the wretched prickly stuff awaits in abundance down the left. A very, very tough test.

The back tee of this monster par 5 is now on the Eden course, so you actually have to drive back in bounds! The OOB wall continues all the way down the right, but stray too far left, and several wonderfully named bunkers potentially await. Drive it short left into the wind and you may find yourself in the Beardies; drive it long left and bigger hitters could even catch Benty bunker downwind. But the one that strikes most fear is the huge and ominously named Hell bunker that stands guard some 100 yards short of the green. Find your way into this one, and you may not resurface for some time.

12TH - ST ANDREWS PAR 4, 348 YARDS A short par 4 designed to tempt and tease, but certainly not one to be taken lightly as evidenced by a much harder ranking in Open Championships than its yardage alone might suggest. Two factors account for this: an extremely testing green with a shallow rear shelf (straying beyond it is singularly ill-advised!); and a testing layup for those opting for discretion rather than valour, thanks to a series of fairway bunkers from 175 to 225 yards. To add to the test, much gorse awaits on the left for any miscued drives on the tiger line.

13TH - MUIRFIELD PAR 3, 193 YARDS All the par 3s at Muirfield are strong, but the 13th is perhaps the pick of the bunch visually. It plays about a club uphill to a long, narrow green set in a small amphitheatre in the dunes. There are three bunkers on the right, and two on the left, from where you may remember Ernie Els making an incredible up-and-down from a tough spot en route to victory in 2002. The green has a steep false front,

Same length as Turnberry’s 9th, and possibly even more testing if the wind is against, especially as you know that this will also make Carnoustie’s 18th a real beast too, more of which shortly. Surprisingly, this hole rather than 18 is christened ‘Barry Burn’, though you’re much less likely to fall foul of it here, as it requires quite a wide to the left to find the water. All of the bunker trouble lies short of the 46-yard long green – three right, two left – so far better to err long. The problem is that, at 248 yards, this just may not be physically possible for mere mortals.

17TH - ST ANDREWS PAR 4, 495 YARDS One of the most famous holes in world golf, and comfortably the hardest on the course, playing to an average much closer to five, there really is no let up from start to finish here! The ideal drive must be fired bravely over the corner of the Old Course Hotel’s outbuildings and the further right you dare venture, the better the angle into a very shallow green. Stray too far left, and you’ll likely be forced into a three-shot strategy. The green is then admirably protected by the fearsome and magnetic Road bunker at the front and a short steep bank running down to the road and wall beyond.

15TH – ROYAL TROON PAR 4, 502 YARDS It’s a par 4 and the yardage starts with a ‘5’, which probably tells you all you need to know! Left is better off the tee, and the approach features a number of bunkers, though none of these sit right by the green set in a gentle hollow. The 15th kickstarts a demanding closing quartet at Troon, and it was here on the predominantly flat putting surface that Henrik Stenson landed the killer blow in last year’s Open by sinking a 50-footer right across the green to finally put a bit of daylight between him and Phil Mickelson in their epic Open duel.

18TH - CARNOUSTIE PAR 4, 499 YARDS Few finishing holes in world golf create such anxiety as this fearsomely treacherous par 4. This is the Open rota finale most pros would least relish the prospect of arriving at needing par for victory! The Barry Burn is in play right and left off the drive, before swinging back across the fairway in front of the green. Just writing this brings back vivid memories of a hapless, paddling Jean van de Velde. To complete the test, OOB awaits just yards left of the green and beyond it. Make par and retire immediately to the hotel bar for a very well-deserved beverage!

IN – PAR 36, 3,951 YARDS 16TH - CARNOUSTIE PAR 3, 248 YARDS

TOTAL – PAR 71, 7,125 YARDS

WATCHING THE PROFESSIONALS GOLF FANS LOOKING TO COMBINE A GOLF HOLIDAY IN SCOTLAND WITH A SPOT OF TOURNAMENT ACTION ARE SPOILT FOR CHOICE THIS SUMMER, WITH NO FEWER THAN SEVEN PROFESSIONAL EVENTS ON THE SCHEDULE FOR 2017 WORDS BY NICK BAYLY

T

here’s nothing that inspires me more to be a better golfer than watching top professionals in action. Although they make a game which we know to be frustratingly hard, look ridiculously easy, just seeing the carpet-like greens, manicured fairways, blue skies and fresh air calls out to my inner golfer to strike out in search of new golfing horizons. Sadly, for us southern-based golfers, top-level tournament golf is a rare beast these days, with the European Tour rolling into Wentworth once every year in May for the PGA Championship, while the Open is restricted to an appearance every decade or so when Royal St George’s gets the nod – which won’t be again until 2020. Thankfully, our near(ish) neighbour Scotland is constantly showered with professional events to attend, with no fewer than four of the courses on the Open rota based in the country, while the Scottish Open has now become an almost must-play event for the top players looking to sharpen up their links golf ahead of ‘the big one’ the following week. This season will see no fewer than seven professional tournaments hosted north of the border, while there is also a good number of leading amateur competitions to look in on if you’re in the vicinity. Of those, the Ricoh Women's British Open is arguably the most prestigious. One of five majors on the ladies' professional circuit, and the only one to be staged in the UK, it will break new ground when it is held at Kingsbarns for the first time in its 41-year history this August. Although a regular host venue of the European Tour’s Dunhill Links Championship, which it shares with St Andrews and Carnoustie, the Women’s British Open will be a maiden major championship for the acclaimed links, which first opened in 2000 and is located

just a short drive from the centre of St Andrews. Kingsbarns will also become just the fourth different Scottish venue to stage the event, following in the footsteps of the Turnberry, the Old Course in St Andrews and Carnoustie. Sadly, only one Scottish golfer has ever won the title, Catriona Matthew, who broke her major duck at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2009. The Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open has a new home too, with Dundonaid Links in Ayrshire hosting the event for the first time in its history in July, just a week before the Open is held at Royal Birkdale. In doing so, it will become the tenth different course to have staged Scotland's flagship golf event and the first in Ayrshire since Belleisle in 1936. Jimmy Adams ran out the winner on that occasion and, since then, some of golf's most famous names have managed to get their hands on the title, with Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose amongst them. Since leaving its long-standing home at Loch Lomond in 2011, and being played exclusively at links courses, the Scottish Open has established itself as the perfect way to warm up for the Open Championship, which takes place the following week. Indeed, five of the last six Open champions have prepared to win the Claret Jug by first playing in the Scottish Open, with Phil Mickelson being the last player to win both events back-toback after winning at Castle Stuart and Muirfield in 2013. The Aberdeen Asset Management Ladies' Scottish Open has become one of the most popular and lucrative events on the Ladies European Tour. In recent years, it has attracted some of the top players in the women's game to take part, including Lydia Ko, Suzann Pettersen and Charley Hull. It provides a great opportunity to see

some of the best female golfers on the planet at close quarters and, better yet, is free of charge. Like its male equivalent, it, too, will be staged at Dundonald Links in 2017. The Scottish Hydro Challenge, meantime, is a superb place to watch the stars of tomorrow. It is held at the Macdonald SpeyValley Resort in Aviemore every June and counts the likes of Brooks Koepka and Andrew 'Beef' Johnston amongst its recent winners. Stars of yesteryear can be seen at the Scottish Senior Open, which has been staged at Archerfield Links in recent years, but this year moves to the Rennaissance Club, a stunning layout which occupies the land between Archerfield and Muirfield. Enjoy watching amateur golf? Then head to Nairn and Nairn Dunbar on the Moray coast in August for the Boys' Amateur Championship, whilst the Scottish Amateur Championship will be staged at Prestwick for men and Royal Aberdeen for women also in the summer. The tournament season in the UK concludes, as it has done since 2001, with the popular Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Offering a welcome break from the traditional tournament format, the Dunhill is staged across no fewer than three courses - the Old Course in St Andrews, Carnoustie's Championship Course and Kingsbarns with tour pros teaming up with an amateur playing partner for a round on each layout. At the end of 54 holes, the top half of the leaderboard advance for a final round over the Old Course. Taking place in early October, it rounds off the season perfectly, and it seems as popular with the professional players as its does with the stars from the worlds of sport, music and showbusiness who regularly play in the event. Actors such as Samuel L. Jackson, Hugh Grant and Bill Murray have regularly taken part as amateur partners, as have sportsmen such as Ian Botham, Kevin Pietersen, Steve Redgrave and Tim Henman. Last year saw One Direction’s Niall Horan as one of the star attractions, although he sings marginally better than he plays golf. The tournament also enjoys a hefty $5m prize fund, and has kick-started many a tour player’s career, as it did with last year’s winner, Tyrrell Hatton, who is now inside the world’s top 20. With such a diverse collection of tournaments on the calendar, it makes sense to find time to watch as well as play if you happen to be visiting Scotland in 2017.

HASTINGS What are your favourite courses in Scotland? Gullane, Turnberry, and Loch Lomond. I’m a member at Gullane, where I play off five.

What is your best moment in golf? I would have to be my first ever round on the Old Course at St Andrews, aged 14, when I holed a four-foot putt on the 18th green to go round in 99. Breaking 100 around there seemed like a huge achievement. What's your best ever round in Scotland? I went around Turnberry in 76 the very first time I played it. I had the incomparable caddie Ian Milligan on my bag, which may have helped my score. What is the worst shot you have ever played?

The former Scotland and British Lions full back reveals some of his favourite tracks in his homeland

For those that know Gullane, I once picked my drive from the first tee on the No.1 course off the grass in front of the main clubhouse. On a normal day this would seem to be impossible, but a number of years ago I somehow contrived to manage it. Which three people would make up your dream four ball? Nelson Mandela, Neil Armstrong and Tiger Woods.

Which would you prefer to watch – the last day of the Ryder Cup or the deciding match on a Lions Tour of New Zealand? I have been to every Ryder Cup since 1997, bar one. I love it, because I go with my mates as a real fan, without all the corporate hospitality. When it comes to rugby, I’m always working, rather than watching as a fan, so it would have to be the final day of the Ryder Cup.
