The 18th green addition of the deluxe 154-room Edgewood Tahoe Lodge in June 2017 turned the venerable Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course into a world class “must-see” destination for golfers wishing to enjoy the same VIP service and exquisite conditions you’d expect at the top private clubs in America as well as for other travelers looking for luxury accommodations to pamper them.

Golf Travelers Sure to Love New ‘The Phantom of the Open’ Movie You love golf, you love short and long hauls to illustrious golf destinations, and you can’t consume enough of the sport no matter what it’s about and how it’s delivered. Well, here’s a treat: the legendary Sony Pictures Classics is releasing a new golf movie, “The Phantom of the Open” beginning June 3 in theaters nationwide. It’s been a long time since a decent golf movie has hit the silver screen. Thankfully, “Phantom” isn’t decent – it’s of eagle if not albatross caliber. Better yet, it’s based on a true story – really. Simply put, you’ll immensely enjoy the film and it’ll positively remain in your mind for a long time. Smile your way through the trailer here. It’ll cause you to hit the theater and smile your way through the storyline. It all starts with British shipyard worker Maurice Flitcroft in the remote port town of Barrow-in-Furness, England. After receiving a pink slip, the 46-year-old serendipitously catches, on his not-soclear color TV, Tom Watson holing out on No. 18 to win a playoff at the 1975 Open Championship at Carnoustie Golf Links. Despite being down on his luck, the eternal optimist with nary a clue sets his sights on winning the Open Championship. Problem is he’s never picked up a golf club, doesn’t know the first thing about the game and doesn’t look the part either. Gaming clubs from his “boss” and pseudo-golf attire from, well, “wherever,” our dreamer practices – and practices some more – on everything from your proverbial goat farm course to a beach. Shots frequently go wayward, less often straight. Maurice completes an application for the 1976 Open Championship qualifying tournament. He harmlessly checks the

8 Golf Vacations • May 2022

“professional” box because the “amateur” box requires a handicap which he doesn’t have. Open Championship administrator, the Royal & Ancient, commits a faux pas and Maurice is shockingly invited to qualify. Naturally, he doesn’t belong and proceeds to shoot a recordhigh 121. Normal people would be self-conscious of such an abhorrent showing, but not the calm and collected Maurice. He was at peace with doing the best he could. The big number, and the gaunt, bucket-hat, argyle-vested and mostly disheveled-looking Maurice became a star not just in his kingdom, but internationally. The headlines were full of applause, admonishment and cleverness. Lo and behold, Blythefield Country Club in Grand Rapids. Michigan, flew Maurice and family over the pond to christen the inaugural “Maurice Flitcroft World’s Worst Golfer” tournament. Even his wife, Jean (played by Golden Globes winner Sally Hawkins) is naïve about the sport. When informed of Maurice’s 121, she seriously asks: “does that mean he’s won?” Oscar winner Mark Rylance brilliantly plays the proud Maurice whose relationships with Jean, his corporate ladder-climbing son and his disco-fanatical twin sons re hilarious and endearing. The importance of family values is in full force. This is a film for everyone, not just golfers. It ranks high with men and women who wouldn’t know the difference between Davis Love and Courtney Love. In that vein, call “Phantom” a dramedy filled with a slew of funny, emotional and inspiring moments. By the way, for you golf-obsessed historians, Johnny Miller won the 1976 Open Championship by four strokes over Jack Nicklaus and a then 19-year-old Seve Ballesteros who is portrayed in “Phantom” in a memorable scene with Maurice.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • CHIPSHOTS Central Oregon Proves There’s More To Oregon Golf Than Bandon Dunes SUNRIVER, OR — It’s widely known that Oregon is home to some of the greatest public golf courses in the country, if not the world. The acclaim and fanfare of Bandon Dunes Golf Resort are a big reason for this reputation, but long before its existence golfers were making their way to another popular Oregon golf destination – Central Oregon. With nearly 30 golf courses, including three in Golf Digest’s Top 100 (#40 – Pronghorn, #61 – Crosswater, #82 – Tetherow), and a diversity in course design that is rare, Central Oregon has long been considered among the top destinations in the country for a golf trip. “In terms of variety, playability, accessibility, weather, and course conditions, Central Oregon has to be at or near the top of any golfer’s bucket list of destinations,” says Julia Theisen, president & CEO of Visit Central Oregon. “I often tell people that the fact that David McLay Kidd, who has designed some of the world’s top courses including the original Bandon Dunes course and Central Oregon favorite Tetherow, lives here is testament enough to the quality of play and supporting cast of activities.” Central Oregon is blessed with a consistent abundance of sunshine given its location on the drier and higher eastern side of the Cascade Mountains. During Central Oregon’s famously mild summer, when average high temperatures settle in the low-80s, it’s common to golf, bike, and fly fish in the same day. Early season visitors even have an opportunity to accomplish the rare double feat of skiing and golfing in the same day, as the ski season at nearby Mt. Bachelor typically runs through Memorial Day. Anchored by the outdoor lover’s paradise of Bend, Central Oregon is home to Championship designs spread throughout the region. That includes the PGA Tour pedigree of Sunriver Resort’s three courses, including Crosswater - a Top 100 mainstay, plus the Jack Nicklaus course at Pronghorn Resort and the David McLay-Kidd (who calls Bend home) gem of Tetherow. Other notable offerings include the player-friendly design of Brasada Ranch, the municipal masterpiece of Juniper Golf Course, the volcanic crushed red cinder bunkers at Aspen Lakes, and the mountain golf designs of Robert Muir Graves and John Fought (redesign) at Black Butte Ranch. Of course, golf is not all that makes for a great golf trip in Central Oregon, home to nearly 40 breweries, many wineries and tasting rooms, distilleries, and cideries, as well as a creative culinary scene that includes everything from fine dining to an eclectic food truck culture. “Despite the many challenges brought about by the pandemic, it was surprisingly good for the game of golf as record numbers of people either returned to the game or took it up for the first time,” says Theisen. “As these and other golfers return to traveling this year, we’re confident they’ll find the variety of courses, surrounding natural beauty, and abundance of outdoor recreation give Central Oregon all the makings of the perfect golf trip.” For more information on Central Oregon golf, activities, lodging, and experiences, visit www.VisitCentralOregon.com.

Members of the Federation of European Golf Greenkeepers Association (FEGGA) travelled from 15 countries across the globe to check out the transformation of La Hacienda Alcaidesa Links Golf Resort, formerly known as Alcaidesa, as part of its three-day annual conference. FEGGA serves as the umbrella body for the national greenkeeping associations in Europe with its members and key partners gathering at La Hacienda to discuss key initiatives and challenges facing the industry, as well as learning about the multi-million investment project currently in progress at the 36-hole Spanish venue. La Hacienda’s head greenkeeper, Raúl Tineo Brea, and course architect, Kurtis Bowman, discussed the exciting plans for the new Links Course, which has been completely reconfigured and redesigned, before attendees were able to enjoy a tour of the layout and signature holes. As part of the conference, members also dined in Sal Verde, the recently-opened restaurant in La Hacienda’s renovated clubhouse. Dean Cleaver, Executive Officer of FEGGA, said: “We’d like to thank La Hacienda for having us and for its exceptional hospitality. “There’s no better compliment than from the experts of the industry and some of the best greenkeepers in Europe, and all of them had positive things to say about the facilities and new Links Course. “We were all in agreement that it’s now going to be in the conversation for one of the best golf courses in Spain and has catapulted it into amongst Europe’s elite. We are still getting our breath back after seeing some of the stunning views over the ocean and Rock of Gibraltar!” Located in the Cadiz municipality of San Roque, close to Sotogrande, the Links Course is scheduled to open in June 2022 and will run along the beachfront with spectacular views of the Mediterranean, Gibraltar and Africa.

Usga And Pebble Beach Company Announce Landmark Partnership Building upon a nearly centurylong relationship, the United States Golf Association and Pebble Beach have forged a landmark partnership that seeks to benefit the game of golf for generations to come. As part of the announcement, Pebble Beach will now host four future U.S. Opens (2027, 2032, 2037 and 2044) as well as four future U.S. Women’s Opens Presented by ProMedica, including its first one next year (2023, 2035, 2040 and 2048). These additional championships fulfill a common goal to ensure that both men and women have the opportunity to compete at the highest level on this iconic course. In addition, for the first time ever, the U.S. Senior Open and U.S. Senior Women’s Open will be staged backto-back at the same location in 2030, with the resort’s Spyglass Hill Golf Course serving as the host site. “This relationship with Pebble Beach, long considered a national treasure, is a historic step forward for golf,” said USGA CEO Mike Whan. “In addition to elevating our Open championships, the USGA and Pebble Beach are committed to working together to ensure a more diverse, welcoming and accessible game. We couldn’t be more thankful for their collaboration and like-minded vision.” “We are honored to deepen our longstanding partnership with the USGA, which will benefit the game of golf for years to come,” said Pebble Beach Company CEO David Stivers. “We are proud that Pebble Beach Golf Links was the first public golf course to host a U.S. Open in 1972, and that golfers around the world have the opportunity to play Pebble Beach and walk in the footsteps of champions. This partnership ensures that the legacy of championship golf on this historic course will continue long into the future and leave a lasting impact on the game.”

www.golfvacationsmag.com

The long-term nature of the championship agreement allows the USGA and Pebble Beach Resorts to invest and collaborate in new and innovative ways to enhance the player, fan, partner and media experience. The relationship between the USGA and Pebble Beach began in 1929 with the 33rd U.S. Amateur Championship, and the resort has played host to 13 USGA championships during its first 100 years of existence, including six U.S. Opens, five U.S. Amateurs and two U.S. Women’s Amateurs, with another 10 championships to come over the next 25 years. U.S. Opens through the years at Pebble Beach have matched the dramatic setting. In 1972, Jack Nicklaus hit the flagstick with a 1-iron shot on No. 17 to ensure victory; in 1982, Tom Watson denied Jack a recordbreaking fifth title with his pitch-in birdie on the same hole; in 1992, veteran Tom Kite rode a pitch-in birdie on No. 7 to a wind-buffeted win; in 2000, Tiger Woods authored the most dominant victory in major-championship history in the 100th U.S. Open; in 2010, Graeme McDowell outlasted a trio of major champions, including Woods; and in 2019, Gary Woodland’s heroic 3-wood second shot on No. 14 helped him hold off Brooks Koepka’s bid for a third consecutive U.S. Open title. The 2019 championship marked Pebble Beach’s 100th anniversary. Beyond the future championships, the USGA and Pebble Beach are developing communitybased programs to create internships and other career opportunities for the next generation of industry leaders. The expanded relationship also includes a joint initiative with the USGA’s Green Section to invest in turfgrass and water conservation through a research hub, contributing to the

entities’ shared goal of creating enjoyable golf experiences that are environmentally and economically sustainable. “Through this relationship, we aim to foster opportunities for future greats of the game, to nurture golf’s next generation of leaders and to develop new technologies for a sustainable future, all while crowning champions who will follow the legends who walked these hallowed grounds before them,” said Whan. “Supporting youth education is a pillar of our community outreach and this partnership will greatly expand opportunities for young people to pursue a career in this industry,” said Stivers. “For over 30 years, Pebble Beach and its neighboring golf courses have operated the most successful water reclamation project on California’s Central Coast. FlightScope Mevo As the prevailing wisdom goes these days, you need a launch monitor if you want to practice with a purpose. Historically, the price points for these treasure troves of swing data kept 99.9% of golfers out of the market. The 0.1%? Those were the TOUR players who could afford $20K TrackMan monitors. FlightScope was one of the first companies to bring these devices down to earth, and its Mevo model is downright affordable by any golfer’s standards. Retailing for $500, Mevo measures eight different data parameters, including carry distance, spin rate, club speed, ball speed, vertical launch, smash factor, apex and flight time. Start-up and use is a cinch, simply download the app, power up and synch the Mevo, and boom, data galore. For more information, visit www.flightscope.com

Private Golf Club Membership More than a Father’s Day gift, joining a private golf club would be a masterful Father’s Day decision. With the explosion of golf participation in the U.S. during and post-pandemic, public tee times are getting harder and harder to secure. Especially during prime weekend times. Country clubs around the country have modernized their membership categories, making them more affordable and practical for first-timers. For example, The Club at Olde Cypress in Naples, Fla., offers an associate golf membership affords unlimited use of the golf course from May through October for cart fee only and unrestricted use of the practice facilities. The club’s reciprocal program is one of the most robust in the region and allows associate golf members access to play 40 other private clubs in the area from May through October. Champion Hills in Hendersonville, N.C. recently rolled out its Equity 55 membership for those 55 and under. With Equity 55, the club’s initiation fee is divided into four equal payments over four years, dues and replacement reserve fund contributions are reduced by 50% and the club’s annual food and beverage minimum is prorated for new members. Offering complete access to the club’s amenities and activities, Equity 55 members enjoy Champion Hills’ mountain-style Tom Fazio-designed golf course, clubhouse with pub and fine dining, wellness center, tennis and bocce courts, pool and hydro spa and more. Search wherever you’re dreaming of relocating, or even where you live now – if you play and practice more than four or five times, monthly, joining a private golf club could make good sense.

LOHLA SPORT’s ‘Golfleisure’ Apparel Big Hit Among Lady Golfers

S

omewhere out there, it’s scientifically proven that you play your best when you look your best. It has to do with confidence and that’s what drives Lisa O’Hurley. The Founder and CEO of LOHLA SPORT – the 16-month-young company that designs and manufactures premium ladies’ golf-lifestyle apparel – should know. A former executive with Golf Channel and golf apparel brand Golfino, O’Hurley sports a four handicap and owes a meaningful part of her success to the clothes she wears. So much so that with LOHLA SPORT, she’s ushering a new generation of “golfleisure” styles. As you may imagine, it’s an offshoot on the immensely popular “athleisure” attire made popular by Lululemon. Key components to “golfleisure:” cool, classy, chic and comfortable designs and fits which optimize body movements and, therefore, swings and putts. After rounds, LOHLA SPORT is designed to help women confidently transition from the course to the office to socializing with friends and family.

Rooted in colorful, on-trend European designs with feminine Los Angeles flair, capsules coordinate tops, bottoms, skorts, outwear and headwear. Cuts are flattering yet not overtly sexy and are made of finequality fabrics sourced worldwide. It’s no wonder, LOLA SPORT is carried in more than 300 fine golf shops across America and boasts a strong e-commerce business. Guided by a “Made for Play” mantra,

the Spring-Summer 2022 capsules: • Rodeo Drive – Generates the feeling you get shopping on the infamous street – elegant and chic. Colors are black, white and Tiffany blue. The print design is inspired by that of an Hermes scarf. • Ocean Avenue – Light and breezy, predominant colors are peony pink, Pacific blue and breezy white with a touch of silver. The Radiant Vest is a highlight piece while small checked skorts in peony and pacific create a clean and classic feel. • Hollywood Boulevard – Red, white, navy and blueberry with lots of stars, the perfect assortment for July 4th. The Monroe pant delivers an old Hollywood glam look with modern details. • Sunset Boulevard – Features the array of colors seen during an afternoon stroll past celebrity homes. Highlighted by lush bougainvillea, navy and grass green, this capsule’s dark floral print elicits a subtle British touch. •Melrose Place – Eclectic and funky like the cult ’90s TV show of the same name with a mix of paparazzi orange, limelight, navy and white. The Illusion Pant and skort show a very small geometric print that’s as elegant as it is trendy. In addition to “The Streets of Los Angeles” collection (sizes XXS to XXL), depicting the cool vibes of different L.A. neighborhoods, popular, unique-to-LOHLA SPORT

staples: • The Golf Fitness Pull-On Pant – Worn stand-alone (akin to a workout tight) or under skorts in the fall for added warmth and décor, it is purposely thicker, becoming the perfect golf-yoga pant. Its back pockets make it country club appropriate. • The “Very Pant” – The four-pocket, full, four-way stretch pant is offered in several colors. It was inspired by the J. Peterman character in the TV hit “Seinfeld,” indicating specificity of the surreal or sublime. The famous line “The Very Pant I’ve been searching for all my life” is part of sitcom lore. Praise goes to designers O’Hurley and London-based Paul Rees who made his name with Burberry and Aquascutum. Early this year, LOHLA SPORT made headlines when it established a partnership with Annika Sorenstam who will help inspire of a bespoke signature collection with part proceeds benefitting the ANNIKA Foundation. A post-script: If you think the O’Hurley name sounds familiar, perhaps it’s because Lisa’s husband is John O’Hurley who played J. Peterman on “Seinfeld,” starred in “Chicago” on Broadway, hosted TV’s “Family Feud” and owns hundreds of acting credits to his name. More information: www.lohlasport. com, hello@lohlasport.com.

T

he 18th green addition of the deluxe 154-room Edgewood Tahoe Lodge in June 2017 turned the venerable Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course into a world class “must-see” destination for golfers wishing to enjoy the same VIP service and exquisite conditions you’d expect at the top private clubs in America as well as for other travelers looking for luxury accommodations to pamper them. Located on the southern tip of Lake Tahoe—called the jewel of the High Sierras—the 18-hole public facility, designed by George Fazio 50 years ago and touched up by his nephew Tom, offers a challenging, but fair test through meadows and pine forests. There are trees not only bordering the holes, but even a few in the fairways that must be avoided with tee shots and approaches. Water comes into play on 14 holes. Just as important, especially on the closing holes, are the panoramic views of the blue waters of what is the seconddeepest lake in America along with the snow-capped Sierras in the distance. Playing at more than 6,200 feet of elevation, golfers experience cooler temperatures (70-85) than back home during the summer and can expect to see the ball carry farther (10 to 15 percent) at the higher altitude. Who doesn’t need this help most of the time, especially off the tee? In its storied history, the course has played host to numerous major events, including the 1980 U.S. Public Links with Jodie

Mudd as the champion and the 1985 U.S. Senior Open won by Miller Barber with the only score under par. In addition, it has hosted the American Century Championship, featuring stars from the NFL, MLB and NBA with a few coaches plus big-name entertainers, since 1990. Building the lodge did result in George’s nephew returning to make changes to the 9th hole, which used to be an inland hole with a sharp dogleg to the right. The tee was moved behind the former left green on No. 8 (there used to be two greens on that hole that were alternated). Golfers now get a glimpse of the lake from the tee. While 30 yards shorter, the winds off the lake now must be considered more when making club selections. “It’s a dramatic improvement,” said Director of Golf Randy Fox. “It now provides a nice balance with finishing holes on the lake for both nines.” Longtime PR representative Phil Weidinger added, “It’s now much more fun, scenic and memorable.” While most of this hole is in Nevada like the rest of the course, a right-handed golfer stands the chance of hooking his drive off the tee into California. The state line angles from left of the tee (as you play the hole) to include a portion of the left side of the fairway as you approach the green, maybe 80 yards short where a marker on the beach denotes the border.

Don’t forget that after your round to stop by the Brooks’ Bar & Deck, selected by the editors of Golf Digest Magazine as one of the “Best Golf Pubs” in the world, and have an amazing view from the patio of the golf course, the lake and the Sierras. There’s a sprawling deck, a vaulted wide-beam ceiling and long-paned windows. Brooks’ also offers a breakfast buffet and wide array of choices for lunch and dinner. If you have the necessary “Benjamins” and want to be spoiled with a great lodging experience, I highly recommend that you consider also staying at the Lodge at Edgewood Tahoe, only a short walk away from the clubhouse. Standard room rates start at $350 and range to $800 depending upon the season. Of course, various packages and specials are offered throughout the year, Designers captured the spirit of storied lodges of the Great American West when it opened in June 2017, being named “Most Beautiful Hotel in Nevada” by Architectural Digest. The Great Room features 38-foot-tall floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of the lake and the mountains. The grand staircase was fabricated from local wood logs and the carved limestone wall was created by a Bay Area stone carver. The wood paneling of the great hall ceilings and the other walls is walnut. The patterns and colors of the deer head art were designed to represent he Native American history of the area. I was blown away by all the amenities during my one-night www.golfvacationsmag.com

stay. The room had an in-room fireplace, a terrace with a seating area where I enjoyed my $20 hamburger ordered from room service, a mini refrigerator, a desk where I could check my internet and a soaking tub, a great place to relax after a round of golf. The Coffee Bar is open at 6 a.m. for the early risers and there’s two great places to dine–the Bistro from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and an hour longer on Fridays and Saturdays and the Edgewood Restaurant, opening at 5 p.m. and offering creative dishes from Chef Charles Wilson along with a diverse wine list. There are fire pits outside the lodge on the way to the swimming pool, which offers water temperatures in the 80s all year, and a 40-person hot tub. Poolside cabanas are also available for rent by the half day or full day. Nestled in a private yet expansive area in a peaceful inviting atmosphere on the second floor is the spa that can offer guests serenity, relaxation and rejuvenation. A state-of-the-art fitness center, open 24/7, is located on the third floor, offering the latest equipment, including an adaptive motion trainer, elliptical stationary bikes, glide functional trainers and weight and strength training machines. This mountain paradise that blends natural beauty with exquisite comfort is only an hour’s drive from Reno. Golf Vacations • May 2022 25

T

he Heritage Harbour golf course in Bradenton Florida has been a favorite of both locals and snowbirds for many years. The course opened in 2001 as Stoneybrook Golf Club at Heritage Harbour and changed to its current name in 2018. Since its inception, it has been operated as a public course and a semi-private club. In the years after the 2008 financial crisis, the condition of the course continued to deteriorate. Different golf course management companies were brought in to make improvements and turn things around, but conditions didn’t improve and the golf course was put up for sale, something that worried residents who had once upon a time purchased golf course homes. Local PGA golf professional turned publisher turned real estate broker Mark Bruce put together an investment group and purchased the distressed property, thus adding the title of Golf Course Owner/General Manager to an already crowded business card. His knowledge and expertise in each area have melded together nicely as everything he foresaw for Heritage Harbour is coming to fruition. By his admission, Bruce says the course was desperately in need of repairs. Bruce and a group of investors purchased the club about 4 years ago. Florida weather, especially summer 28 Golf Vacations • May 2022

heat and torrential afternoon rains is hard on golf courses. “The lifespan of core elements like greens, bunkers, and turfgrass is only about 12 to 15 years, so now, after 21 years, it was time for us to do some heavy lifting”, says Bruce. As one of his partners told me, “I came down to visit the property shortly after agreeing to become an investor. As Mark was touring me around the property I stopped him and asked, “what have you gotten me into?” Mark Bruce knew exactly what he was doing. After doing his due diligence, he put together a business model that will ultimately pay for the course renovation, clubhouse improvements, and ongoing maintenance of the golf course. Bruce has partnered with ResClub, whose business model brings quality traffic to vacation rental property resorts. Visitors that are in golf vacation mode will provide additional revenue streams for the resort developer. With this new business model, the shift to frame the property as a micro destination golf resort makes perfect sense and will generate sufficient revenue for years to come to properly care for the course and make it a “must play” in Southwest Florida. The uniqueness of what Bruce and ResClub’s CEO Craig Williamson have created is unparalleled. You can be a visiting www.golfvacationsmag.com

vacationer for a short or extended stay, a member that comes every year for two to four weeks, or a seasonal owner that lives in a Villa for up to six months a year. Here’s how membership works. A $99,000 membership will get you four weeks of use for a 30year term on a vacation home at Heritage Harbour in Bradenton, FL or you can choose from more than 4,500 resort locations and 600,000 hotels in more than 100 countries within an extensive travel exchange network. The biggest difference between this type of ownership and timeshare is that with a timeshare, you still pay maintenance and resort fees. The ResClub membership model has no closing costs, HOA, property management fees, or ongoing utility expenses either. With this type of membership, there is a fixed annual return - they pay you back between 5 – 8% each year. Use your new vacation home for 4 weeks during the year and you’ll get 5% of your investment back; don’t use it at all and you’ll get 8%. So instead of forking out $3 – 5,000 in fees, you are getting a check for $5,000 – $8,000 each year. Looking for a seasonal place to call home? Whole ownership of a villa is available and owners can use it for up to 179 days a year as a “seasonal home” or keep their use limited to four weeks and deploy the villa into the resort rental platform to create income. The whole goal is to create an experience for Members and Owners that creates a net-zero cost of ownership and gives them amazing lifestyle and personal use benefits. Ultimately, the new Heritage Harbour Golf Resort will include 74 villas and a 100-suite golf lodge and will be the only fullservice golf resort in Manatee County. It will include a resortstyle pool, fishing excursions in the nearby Manatee River or Gulf of Mexico, corporate meeting and event spaces, and various other amenities. The Heritage Harbour Golf Club was designed by Arthur Hills, one of America’s foremost golf course designers who was best known for building courses that are fun to play, beautiful, challenging, and require a strategy. He has designed many of the country’s finest courses - over 200 throughout the nation - and renovated just as many. I’ve often commented on how mundane Florida golf can be; after all, there’s only so much you can do with water, sand, and palm trees. Arthur Hills has taken those three aspects of Florida golf and created a Sunshine State masterpiece. www.golfvacationsmag.com

As far as the layout goes. It’s incredible, winding its way through ponds, lakes, wooded areas, and wetland preserves. By successfully playing the angles Hills gives you, you are rewarded with manageable approach shots and opportunities for birdie. Unfortunately, Arthur Hills passed away in May 2021, so we will never know what changes he would have made to his original design. Instead, Bruce and his partners have turned the redesign efforts over to someone they feel is an up-and-coming course architect, Nick Campanelli. Campanelli is just 38 and is a graduate of Penn State University. He is a Partner in the highly successful boutique landscape architecture firm M-DL-A, whose presence is mostly in the Northeast US. In 2010, he submitted the winning entry into Golf Digest’s “Dream Hole” Armchair Architect Contest. His risk/reward par 4 hole was judged by fellow course architects Gil Hanse, Jeff Mingay, Tripp Davis, and Todd Eckenrode. As the contest winner, Campanelli was awarded probably the most inspiring life experience he will ever have; a four-week micro-internship with Pete Dye in French Lick, Indiana. The full renovation will take place in the summer of 2022 and will include new turfgrass for the tees, fairways, and greens complexes, rebuilt bunkers, and upgrades and technological improvements to the irrigation system. Although the majority of the course will remain unchanged, The first and second holes will be replaced with the Lodge and two groups of villas that border a fifty-eight-acre wetland and beautiful bodies of water. Two new holes will be added to the existing course. Several other holes will be rerouted and redesigned. I’ve seen the renderings and they are quite impressive. Several aspects of the current club will not change; at least it’s not in the current plans. The Heritage Harbour practice facilities will still include an aqua practice range, two putting greens, a short game area, and a fully stocked pro shop. The clubhouse currently has a very active Bar & Grill. They’re open for lunch every day with happy hour from 4 – 6 pm. Wednesday’s is Cornhole Night with a special sports menu and Thursday’s is Burger Night with special prices on half-pound burgers served with your choice of fixings. There are all kinds of ice-cold beverages and adult libations. Be sure to check out their online calendar for other special events. These days it’s hard to find a vacation destination with something for everyone, but Heritage Harbour and the Bradenton area will soon be changing that. The area offers great golf, both fresh water and deep-sea fishing, world-class beaches, exquisite culinary offerings, and luxury shopping. The Resort is just minutes away from I-75 and is destined to become one of Florida’s premier all-purpose resorts. For more information about all that is going on with Heritage Harbour or to make an appointment to visit and purchase a vacation home, you can give them a call at (941) 746-2696 or visit them online at www.heritageharbourgolfclub.com. TecTecTec KLYR Rangefinder

O

ne of the more successful upstarts in the crowded field of golf distance measuring devices, TecTecTec has introduced its latest innovation called KLYR (pronounced clear) --a pocketsized device that is light, 30% smaller than the average rangefinder and loaded with nice features that could make it a top seller. Besides the compact carrying case, KLYR comes with a belt clip and ball marker that attach to the magnet on the side of the rangefinder—and actually gives you four ways of carrying the device on the course—in the carry bag, attached to the metal bar on your golf cart or the belt clip via the magnet—or simply put it in your pocket. A very nice feature.

as you exercise and as you age. Proper levels of HMB increase muscle protein synthesis and decrease muscle protein breakdown. Nirvana’s HMB-infused water, according to laboratory research, can help to improve muscle performance, slow muscle loss due to age and disease, and decrease the recovery time from muscle injury. HMB (hydroxy methyl butyrate) has been shown to help recovery— and of course drinking water on its own is one of the best health habits there is. Drinking the Nirvana spring water that has a slightly flavored taste can also aid muscle capacity from exercise and help reduce soreness and loss of energy. Nirvana has been assisted in developing its HMB-infused spring water by Dr. Naji Abumrad, a world-renowned scientist and expert on systemic muscle inflammation and muscle wasting. A professor of Surgery at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Dr. Abumrad serves as the Chairman of Nirvana’s Scientific Advisory Board providing expert scientific review and guidance of the development of Nirvana’s infused spring water.

In addition to a noticeably clear viewing scope that is superior to many of its competitors, KLYR has a convenient sliding on/off button for the slope function and target lock vibration. This rangefinder easily locks onto the flagstick, or you can scan an area and get readings on several areas of the course—showing continuous readings for distance. Simplicity and practical design are the keys to KYLR, which was designed for ease of use in mind. The new KLYR by TecTecTec is offered in three distinct colors: black, white and high-visibility yellow--and comes with a two-year warranty. TecTecTec was established in 2014 by two brothers from Vannes, France who both happened to be engineers following in their father’s footsteps. Within a brief period, TecTecTec rose to be the #1 Rangefinder on Amazon between 2016-2020, Their model was simple: innovation and precision for a fair price. As the pioneering Rangefinder company to go direct to consumer, they were able to offer new features and technology for half the price as other industry leaders. In addition to its golf and hunting rangefinder products, TecTecTec also manufactures cameras, drones, projectors, security systems and speakers. For more information: www.tectectec.com

Dr. Abumrad also leads Metabolic Technologies LLC, a research driven company focused on the development of credible, safe and effective nutritional ingredients. His leadership role in Nirvana’s development of a line of wellness-infused bottled water products ensures that each claim of health and wellness benefits are backed by research and scientific evidence. “My scientific research has found that just 2 to 3 grams of HMB a day can reverse muscle loss and improve muscle wellness,” noted Dr. Abumrad.
