Praia D’El Rey features in our Lisbon focus, part of a large Portugal section.

welcome Little more than a decade ago, the options for a golf holiday were fairly limited. Only Iberia had really embraced the golf travel market and were able to satisfy the requirements of golfers abroad. The situation in 2012 could not be more difficult. The possibilities seem endless and the variety outstanding. But this spectrum of choice is almost bewildering. One is desperate not to make a poor choice for that much-anticipated golf holiday... yet the options are almost too numerous. Exactly where is the best place to head for? We hope this edition of Golf Escapes is a help in this regard, a valuable reference as you start to plan your golf holidays over the next year. Within this travel guide are over 30 different destinations – and all have their merits. Our aim is to suggest and to inform; after reading these pages, we hope you feel well-placed to make an informed choice in 2012 and 2013. In addition to the courses in each area, we also give a taste of the non-golf attractions on offer. We hope we give you ideas and inspiration to nudge you towards your perfect golf break. These days, it can be found in so many different places.

S

o you’ve arrived in Faro and it’s not cost you much in the way of time and money – because budget airlines fly there from so many UK airports, there’s bound to be one near you. And the good news is, even if you are playing in the most westerly resort we are featuring, you are little more than an hour away from unsheathing your driver on the 1st tee. Golf Escapes made this exact journey, to BOAVISTA GOLF RESORT, in 2010 and we were absolutely astonished at how quickly we were unwrapping our clubs from their flight bag. A new motorway runs the length of the south coast and it works in the manner

which was surely envisaged for motorways when they were first created; they allow you to drive quickly but safely to your destination. Throughout our week on the Algarve we were on and off it constantly as we zoomed along the A22 between courses and a (selfimposed) unforgiving tee time schedule. Never were we crawling at 25mph and never were we infuriated by three lanes blocked by articulated lorries/inconsiderate drivers. If our next course was 15 miles away and 12 of them were on the A22, we knew we needed less than 15 minutes to be in good time. So even if Boavista looks like a bit of a trek from Faro when you look at our map

Hardelot will stage European Tour Q School for the next three years.

OPEN GOLF CLUB

Home of amazing courses in France, Belgium and Morocco.

T

here is nothing in Britain with which to compare Open Golf Club – Hotel Golf Resorts. The upmarket golf chain, with 38 courses and resorts in eight destinations, offer the very best the game of golf can offer. An accurate barometer of the quality of their stable is to glance down Golf World’s European Top 100 Courses list; Open Golf Club can lay claim to no fewer than five entries – Le Touquet, Hardelot, Golf National (via their support of the French Golf Federation’s hosting of the 2018 Ryder Cup), Moliets and Seignosse – from France. It’s a bit like a company in Britain being able to say they had relationships with Rye, Royal Portrush, Carnoustie and Prince’s. Among the Open Golf Club courses are Le Touquet, Hardelot, Soufflenheim and La Wantzenau (Alsace), Seignosse, Moliets and Biarritz le Phare (Aquitaine), Servanes (Provence) Opio Valbonne

4 GOLF ESCAPES 2012

F I V E S TA R S IN FRANCE GOLF NATIONAL For many years a host on the European Tour, this exacting course on the outskirts of Paris has been selected as the stage for the Ryder Cup in 2018. LE TOUQUET (LA MER) South of Boulogne in France, this has long been a holiday playground for the British gentry. There are two courses with Harry Colt’s La Mer (Sea) the pick. There are, though, few glimpses of the sea so it is a little bit like a Hoylake or a Silloth.

Servanes in Provence.

(French Riviera), La Palmeraie and Al Maaden in Marrakech, Cleydael or Five Nations in Belgium. All are located in areas rich in natural, cultural and historical heritage. Open Golf Club have the courses service to give you a memorable golf vacation. They will take care of packages, green fees, golf passes, gift certificate. For example, the Open Golf Club pass enables you to play three different courses in an Open Golf Club destination of your choice in a two-week period of time from from €135 (£115, no lodging requirement). ■

For all details on all their golf and resorts, go to www. opengolfclub.com or contact Nigel Jibson (nigel@opengolfclub. com/07956 863 358). Golf packages with accommodation in close proximity of their golf courses are also available through tour operators.

HARDELOT (LES PINS) The condition of Hardelot (Les Pins) has only improved in recent years as it is not getting quite the same level of traffic from British golfers. Despite being relatively short, it remains one of France’s very finest. This is a classic Tom Simpson design from the 1930s, so oozes a very English feel. MOLIETS Robert Trent Jones Snr created two short holes and two par 5s on both halves with the highlight the stretch through the dunes just after the turn. The tree-lined front nine at this Bayonne classic is lovely too. SEIGNOSSE “Seignosse I like, but it is a bit too hard from the back tees – so choose your tees wisely,” says European Tour winner Gregory Havret. This Robert Von Hagge challenge is tight and tough but is also very clever.

ENGLAND EXPERT OPINION

Close House “Close House is a perfect members course with the capability of staging a major tournament. For a brand-new course it is in great condition. The greens are of a very high quality and I am looking forward to going back and playing it again.” – Lee WestWood

ClOsE HOusE This new course in north-east England is already a classic.

V

ery few new courses are opening in any part of the world in these difficult economic times, so we should be very grateful that the ones which are happen to be so outstandingly good. In Scotland the likes of Castle Stuart and Machrihanish Dunes have added to the Home of Golf’s riches while in Scandanavia PGA National and The Scandanavian have been instantly deemed classics. Meanwhile the north-east of England has witnessed the opening of a course which is destined to

quickly become established as the area’s premier layout. Close House Hotel & Golf is located in Heddon on the Wall, eight miles west of Newcastle’s vibrant city centre and it boasts two outstanding courses, a stylish hotel and first-class dining options. The Colt is the premier course, a par-71, 6,813-yard championshipstandard challenge which spans 160 acres of the Tyne Valley. It was laid out sympathetically on the banks of the Tyne by Scott MacPherson, who has cleverly blended the course into the existing mature trees, lakes and vegetation. Given its name, it won’t surprise you to learn The Colt is a tribute to the great architect of the early 1900s; the man behind Sunningdale and Portrush among many other classic courses. So, you can expect the Colt trademarks of rectangular tees, bunker shapes and a variety of par threes; the style of the course is ‘Old English’. No two consecutive holes

here are, as usual, many superb destinations within Golf Escapes this year. Every one has its own particular attractions and reasons to visit. But when you consider the merits of Ireland, you have to wonder why we should go any further than the Emerald Isle for our golf breaks. It has everything. Of course, there is a significant proviso; if you want guaranteed sun on your back, then the Algarve, Abu Dhabi, Argentina, Turkey et al are much stronger options. It’s not that it never shines in Ireland – in fact, August sees some regularly excellent weather – but

simply that it isn’t guaranteed as it is elsewhere in this golf travel guide. For many of us, that doesn’t matter. It’s not that we like playing in wind or rain, just that we accept it is part and parcel of playing golf – especially on British and Irish links. Indeed, traditionalists would say a sharp shower and a steady wind are essential parts of the links experience. Ireland has plenty of fine inland courses – especially around Dublin – but it is its collection of links which is every bit as good as any on the planet. All four corners of the country are blessed with outstanding seaside courses. In the north, Open host Royal Portrush and Portstewart decorate

the Antrim coast and with work started nearby on a stunning new course, Bushmills Dunes, this area will suddenly have a lot of seriously top-quality venues. Moving westward you find a highly under-rated area – starting with Rosapenna and continuing round to Donegal, County Sligo, Enniscrone and the bewildering brilliance of Carne. It just might be the area in GB&I which has the largest number of truly great courses but which is relatively under-hyped. Travelling down the west coast we encounter modern and ancient excellence. In Lahinch there is a course oozing history and character; in parts quirky, in others seriously

And just a few miles away is Doonbeg, a magnificent new links which carries Greg Norman’s name but for which he admits he deserves little credit; nature shaped this little piece of heaven in the dunes. Heading further south – by now we are at 7 o’clock on an imaginary clockface of Ireland – brings us to the legendary Ballybunion. Tom Watson absolutely loves it and it is said you haven’t played links golf until you have set foot on this hallowed seaside turf. The trio of inland courses at Killarney as well as cultured Adare Manor offer a nice contrast to the diet of links but ultimately we will be lured back to the ocean for

Arnold Palmer’s clifftop thrills at Tralee and the modern links at Waterville, with Tom Fazio’s revitalisation of this dormant giant done with typical aplomb. Another ‘must play’ to add to your list. From there we can head south and east towards Cork for Old Head, a mesmeric course laid out on a peninsula jutting into the ocean. There are many stunning holes here, the best being the ones which have that rare ability to combine aesthetic beauty with golfing challenge. The 2nd, 4th (see above), 7th, and the stretch from the 15th – the fine short 16th can be seen in our main image – do this magnificently. Heading north we find The

An hour’s drive north brings us to Dublin, where we find historic Portmarnock and its under-rated neighbouring hotel course joined in the northern area of the city by The Island. Inland, Carton House, The K Club and Druid’s Glen offer resort golf of a rare quality – good enough, indeed, to have hosted a Ryder Cup. The simple links of County Louth at Baltray breaks up our journey to GB&I’s finest course, Royal County Down. What Is It With Ireland And The Majors?

Machrihanish Dunes Celebrated designer David McLay Kidd has created a beguiling, natural and quirky links to add to Scotland’s collection of classic courses.

n the south-west tip of mainland Scotland is a peninsula that stirred Paul McCartney and Wings to song – the Mull of Kintyre. From here on a clear day you can look east and see the Isle of Arran, on the other side of which is Troon and the Ayrshire coast. To the north-west are romantic Western Isles like Islay and Gigha. And south, closer than you might think, is the Antrim coast of Giant’s Causeway and Portrush.

‘MACH DuNeS’ “I’d seen the pictures, read the articles, it was time to sample the links at ‘Mach Dunes’. Quite frankly – wow. If other courses have taken 100 years to get where they are today, Mach Dunes is there already. It had me just walking to the 1st tee.” – RYDER CUP HERO RONAN RAFFERTY XX GOLF ESCAPES 2012

Finally, behind you are two of the nation’s golfing treasures lying side by side – namely Machrihanish and Machrihanish Dunes. While the former has been here for hundreds of years, the latter was untouched by golf as recently as a decade ago. Yet it happens to be as perfect a site for a links course as you could wish for. Designing a course here was a complicated process because the area is an SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). It meant the process took that much longer because, like it or

not, this could be no modern design. David McLay Kidd and his team had to work with the land – and design a course in much the same way the likes of Old Tom Morris did next door at Machrihanish a century and a half ago. At such times the skill of the architect lies in identifying natural green sites and working backwards from there. This means Machrihanish Dunes, by contemporary standards, is quirky. What you get is a bit of everything. There are back-to-back

short holes – the 14th and 15th – some long and testing par 4s – like the 8th, 476 yards from the tips and doglegging ever more towards the sea and into the prevailing wind – and driveable par 4s – none of the 5th, 10th and 13th stretch to 350 yards even from the black tees. Perhaps the most special feature of ‘Mach Dunes’ are the green complexes; expect dramatically sloping surfaces with only the occasional flat shelf for the pins to be cut. Approach from the wrong angle and it can seem impossible to get the ball close. Conversely, there is always an angle of attack that makes the shot easier, to reward those who are skilful enough to plan ahead. The sound, smell and sight of the ocean are never far away, and your experience as a first-time visitor is enhanced by a guide, who is there to help you navigate the sometimes lengthy walks from green to tee (another consequence of the SSSI site) and offer an overview of each hole. As very few holes are entirely

visible from the tee, there is plenty of information to impart. “As a child I played golf on the original Machrihanish where my father and grandfather were members,” McLay Kidd told us. “We looked across the fence and marvelled at the stretch of dunes to the dorth and imagined a links. A generation later I got to create Machrihanish Dunes, possibly the most natural golf course ever created – even by Old Tom’s standards! “Scottish Natural Heritage said a golf course could never be built there without ruining the ecosystem. But we worked diligently to create a design, method of construction and long-term management plan that SNH could agree to. In essence, this course is the poster child for minimalist design. “If you are headed there to play a course that Old Tom might have created in the 1800s then you will not be disappointed, but if

It might be an acquired taste, a taste of what used to be; nature rules and golfers are challenged to find their way through her unaltered landscape.” As we intimate elsewhere, it takes a bit of getting to. But happily there is four-star site accommodation on site. You can stay in the luxurious, two-bedroom Ugadale Cottages (Hotel of the Year in the small hotel category by Golf Tourism Scotland in 2010) or in one of two newly restored, historic hotels. Once the pinnacle of luxury accommodation in the west of Scotland, the 22-room Ugadale Hotel serves as the centerpiece of the Village at Machrihanish Dunes. It’s within steps of the 1st at Machrihanish Golf Club and offers spectacular views of the course and Atlantic Ocean. Or, stay in the Royal Hotel in the heart of Campbeltown. ■ GOLF ESCAPES 2012 17

The unique nature of each hole, coupled with the stunning nature and idyllic surroundings sees plenty of discussions between golfers as to their favourite hole. Some go for the dog-leg par-4 6th, with its elevated tee that looks out to sea and is especially severe on those who opt to drive but misjudge the line and distance. Others favour the par-5 8th, where a well hit drive between a lake to the right and pines to the left is the order of the day, which – if you make it – is followed by a tough shot onto a virtually island green with raised putting surface and an unforgiving roll. Others opt for the closing challenge – see Must Play Hole – but no matter what hole the golfers and guests settle on as their favourite, they’re all in agreement that San Lorenzo is up there with the best in the world. n

special FOCUS on

The Algarve The south of Portugal has long been known as a haven for golfers. But did you know it is home to six of the 100 best courses in Europe?

W

hen Golf World came to rank the Top 100 Golf Courses in Continental Europe last autumn, it was a hugely difficult task – and much more competitive than the inaugural list in 1999. Some stellar names found themselves outside the hallowed century as a result of the significant increase in overall quality of golf courses across mainland Europe. As many as 18 countries were represented – a truly remarkable figure for a continent whose golf used to be centred around no more than four countries. In such a competitive environment – there were a remarkable 16 new entries – traditional favourites simply have to suffer. Yet one of the traditional superpowers has

22 GOLF ESCAPES 2012

more than maintained its lofty position. The Algarve had six entries on the list – the most of any region in Europe and part of a highly-impressive haul for Portugal. So, while the Algarve may have a (justified) reputation as a fun-packed, sundrenched, relaxing golfing destination, it also needs to be known as an area crammed full of genuine world-class quality. The likes of San Lorenzo, Palmares, Quinta do Lago, Amendoeira and Vilamoura (Old) could stand toe to toe with a list of courses anywhere in the world. In addition, two further courses received recognition in the ‘Next 50’ list, Penina and Victoria. And the remaining 27 in this glorious area are hardly unimpressive. There is variety as well as quality and quantity. Laid out in a variety of landscapes

– from links to parklands to rolling hillside – you never get bored of golf on the Algarve. Over the next 14 pages of this special focus, more of the attractions of the Algarve will be revealed. THREE KEY ADVANTAGES

• It’s a year-round destination with over 300 days of sunshine. May and September are especially lovely times to visit • Cheap flights from all over Britain to Faro and the super-fast A22 motorway takes you to your resort within an hour • It’s great value. Green fees vary from £40 up to £140 but you can plan ahead and get deals including top courses for £200 W A N T M O RE ? EXPERT OPINION

S

o you’ve arrived in Faro and it’s not cost you much in the way of time or money – because budget airlines fly there from so many UK airports, there’s bound to be one near you. The good news is, even if you are playing in the most westerly resort we are featuring, you are little more than an hour away from unsheathing your driver on the 1st tee. Golf Escapes made this exact journey, to Boavista Golf Resort, in 2010 and we were astonished at how quickly we were taking our clubs out of their flight bag. A new motorway runs the length of the south coast and it works in the manner which was surely envisaged for all motorways when they were first created;

they allow you to drive quickly but safely to your destination. Throughout our week on the Algarve we were on and off it constantly as we zoomed along the A22 between courses and a tight tee time schedule. Never were we crawling at 25mph and never were we infuriated by lanes blocked by articulated lorries/inconsiderate drivers. If our next course was 15 miles away and 12 of them were on the A22, we knew we’d be there in less than 15 minutes. So even if Boavista looks like a bit of a trek from Faro when you look at our map on the last page of this special Algarve section, it really is nothing to be concerned about – not least because the entrance to the resort is just a couple of hundred yards from the A22.

In this respect, Boavista benefits hugely from being in this less populated western section of the Algarve; it is located just a couple of minutes away from the motorway yet is secluded in a haven of tranquillity with absolutely no evidence – in sight nor sound – of the nearby A22 whatsoever. The Boavista complex is situated between Lagos and Luz and is an incredibly wellpriced complex – it blows out of the water the suggestion that golf breaks in the sun are too expensive these days. The course has several difficult driving holes but the greens are fairly big and putt beautifully, so a good score can be made. This Howard Swan design course is an unsung hero of the Algarve and it is plenty good enough to entertain any standard of ➨

Gramacho isn’t a big name – but offers a wonderful experience.

player. Stretching to over 6,600 yards, its lofty location means it is sometimes buffeted by winds whipping off the Atlantic. The 7th is a lovely par 4 set against the Atlantic with exhilarating panoramic views from Praia da Luz round to the hills at Monchique. On the back nine the par-5 13th and the short 14th are the pick along with the 17th, a classic risk-andreward challenge. On the other side of the delightful town of Lagos is Palmares, one of the most talked about courses in Europe last year. Palmares will be known to readers already, having been popular with visitors and expats on the Algarve for many years. But owners Onyria decided they wanted something really, really special and so bucked the global trend by seriously investing in a golf course. The totally remodelled course only opened last year – but it went straight in to No.26 on Golf World’s Continental Top 100. We 26 GOLF ESCAPES 2012

were given a tour of the embryonic new course as far back as May 2010 and even then, with a year’s worth of growth still to occur, it was clear this was going to be something special. When you rip a course up and start again, it is always a risk, but when you employ Robert Trent Jones Jnr, you significantly reduce the gamble. The top designer is delighted with the results. “This is my idea of what the new Olympic course in Rio de Janeiro could be like; it could be a hybrid of inland and linksy holes just like Palmares is,” the legendary American told Golf Escapes. As RTJ suggests, there are three loops of nine with different characteristics. The first, Alvor, starts high up in the forested hills, as the old course did, but now there is also a stretch of holes down at the bottom which are linksy – The Praia – in nature and add a unique aspect to golf on the Algarve. across the Bay of Lagos from the Alvor and Lagos (parkland, with two lakes) nines. The newest course in the Algarve, it is already vying to be the very best. Next we move to Penina and it is surely obvious by now that the often under-exposed western section of the Algarve really does warrant your attention when you are planning your trip here this year. After great-value Boavista and Top 100 track Palmares, this is where the Algarve’s enduring love affair with golf began. It was Sir Henry Cotton who created the Championship course here in 1966, one of a quintet of layouts the legendary Englishman created in the Algarve. The whole complex oozes class, from the characterful hotel to the children’s club (making it ideal for a family holiday)... but nothing more so than the course. flora forming a delightful backdrop to the challenge of a course stiffened up by water features. Host of the Portuguese Open on 10 occasions, Penina remains a quality, challenging course nearly 50 years after it was established. The first couple of holes are relatively open and a welcome chance to settle in because after that virtually all the fairways are lined with a myriad sun-loving trees. Water is in play on several occasions, whether it is guarding the front of the 2nd green, splitting the two-tier fairway of the 5th or running alongside the short 13th. The best practice facilities in the Algarve, including three fluent English-speaking pros, mean this is ideal for serious and casual golfers. Oceanico’s Faldo course – known as Amendoeira – is recognised as a demanding layout and its quality was evident when it remained in Golf World’s 2011 continental Europe Top 100 list.

Some find ‘The Faldo’ too difficult to enjoy and it is true that if you play it from tees which aren’t comparative to your ability, it will seem a long, challenging round. It is bursting with cacti, wild herbs, spartan Holm oaks, ancient olive trees and crushed limestone bunkers. ‘The Faldo’ covers undulating terrain, linking two of the highest points on the expansive Amendoeira estate. Strategy is always important and players have to place each shot carefully. From the first hole, a challenging uphill par 4, to the last, a magnificent par 5, the hills and undulating ground are used to the maximum to create a course to challenge the mind as well as the skill. Its stablemate the Oceanico O’Connor weaves its way through valleys with lakes and bunkers creating an American-style challenge. Designed by the hero of Europe’s

1989 Ryder Cup victory, the challenge here – laid out in a fertile valley – are the lakes and strategically-placed bunkers. Lakes and streams feature on nine holes and indeed a glance at the course map makes it appear like a golf course built in Venice. This includes the 3rd, where water surrounds an island which is home to a landmark moorish relic. Multiple tees make the course enjoyable for players of all standards. Pestana Alto is located between Alvor and Praia da Rocha, and is another Cotton design whose rolling fairways are reached by several elevated tees. Located between the picturesque village of Alvor and the bustling resort of Praia da Rocha, Alto is highly popular. Designed by Cotton, the rolling fairways and elevated greens test the low-handicap golfer while providing an enjoyable experience for the average player. Water hazards cleverly come into play at driving distance off the 3rd and 4th tee while a huge lake dominates the par-5 16th. Located close to numerous stunning beaches and a wide variety of restaurants and bars, Alto Golf has a perfect location for a break in the sunshine. Pestana Gramacho is the work of former Open champion Nick Price in collaboration with the wellrespected architect Ron Fream. It is therefore unsurprising that they have created a classy course which offers a thoughtful challenge thanks to its clever bunkering. Laid out in three loops of six, the middle section from the 5th to the 13th is the tightest stretch. Lakes are incorporated but more for aesthetic appeal – this is far from a tricked-up layout and one for the connoisseur. Fream was also involved at Pestana Vale da Pinta and is a five-time host to the Seniors tour. Two lakes influence play on four holes while the bunkers are many and varied in shape and size. Finally, Pestana Silves gives you food for thought right from the start with not one but two water hazards to contend with. It is a big course with big challenges. Silves is a serene spot, but this man-made American-style course encourages attacking play. ■ GOLF ESCAPES 2012 27

hen most people think of the Algarve, it is Vilamoura which springs to mind. It is to golf on continental Europe what St Andrews is to golf in Britain. It attracts golfers like a magnet, eager to see what millions of players from all over the world have found so engaging about this coastal town in southern Portugal. And just like the Auld Grey Toun in Fife, golf courses have sprung up all around the town and in every direction. Another similarity with St Andrews is that they are all of a high calibre; anyone building a course round here knows that anything sub-standard will simply not succeed.

That acknowledgement means that when the benchmark was set high back in the 1960s, it has since been maintained incredibly impressively. It is impossible to imagine a visiting golfer coming to this part of the world and not being charmed by the intoxicating mix of old and new, elegant and striking, traditional and modern. Vilamoura is the star-studded heart of the Algarve and possess some superpower courses, none more statesmanlike than Oceanico’s Old Course – yet another link with St Andrews. Situated in the heart of Vilamoura, 20 minutes from Faro, this 1969 Frank Pennink design is often described as the Grande Dame of Algarve courses.

Parkland in style, it meanders throughout statuesque pine trees – the principal hazard – over gently undulating natural terrain. It was spruced up in the mid ‘90s and such modernising without affecting what Pennink intended has ensured it remains one of the Algarve’s finest. The Old has relatively narrow fairways as the avenues of pines seem to encroach on every drive while the slick, small greens can be hard to hold with longer clubs in your hand. Its fellow Oceanico course, Victoria, burst onto the world golf scene when it hosted the World Cup in 2005, just a year after opening. It has remained high profile as a result of the Portuguese Masters. Covering 90 hectares, it was created by Arnold Palmer and his team, who took ➨

every care to ensure the preservation of the wetlands and the typical vegetation of carob, olive and almond trees. Several lakes, occupying 13 hectares, provide mirrors of water and strategic reservoirs for irrigation. There are five or six tee options per hole, so you needn’t try to play where the world’s best drove off from, while wide fairways give you a chance to open your shoulders. Extensive water hazards and cleverlypositioned bunkers mean you cannot afford to be reckless though. There are three other courses in the Oceanico stable in this region – Pinhal, Millennium and Laguna. Pinhal was the second golf course built in Vilamoura, Pennink finishing work on it in 1976 having already designed the Old Course. It has been tweaked a few times down the years, with the most significant by Robert Trent Jones Snr in 1985. Laid out on a rolling parkland terrain, numerous umbrella and Atlantic pines line many of the fairways. Indeed, a few even stand out on fairways or near greens. Ponds and a stream come into play on five holes but are really for aesthetic appeal rather than golfing challenge. The distinguished British architect Martin Hawtree, due to finish work on the Trump Links near Aberdeen this summer, is the man behind the new-look Millennium. It opened in, rather obviously, the year 2000 with the original back nine formerly part of the 27-hole Laguna Course. These renovated nine holes, including totally new 8th and 9th holes, were joined together with a new loop to offer a layout of different character, style and playing quality. It is an open course ideal for beginners or those wayward off the tee – although some holes, especially the 3rd to the 7th – weave between pine trees and here greater accuracy is required. Laid out over low lying coastal terrain, the Laguna boasts many water hazards and few trees, so is considerably different from the other Vilamoura courses. water affects 11 holes which, as well as acting as hazards and emergency water reservoirs, attract a variety of aquatic birds, both resident and migratory, as well as amphibians, otters and terrapins. Hawtree, part of the famous three generations of golf course architects, also designed Pine Cliffs – whose bright orange cliffs are one of the best known sights in the world of golf. Built in a pinewood setting, with tree-lined fairways running parallel along the Atlantic Ocean, this stunning nine-hole course allows golfers to drink in breathtaking views along the Algarve coastline. Hawtree has worked wonders in maintaining the natural surroundings while also making this a proper test of golf. A huge driving range and lots of target greens and two short-game areas make it popular with golf schools from the UK. The short 6th, Devil’s Parlour, is the hole which sticks in your mind and, every time you think of it, makes you immediately want to grab your clubs and your passport... The list of architects to have

worked on the Algarve is testament to the quality of golf; it is very rarely simple resort golf. And at Vila Sol we find the work of another respected and lauded designer, Donald Steel. Steel has worked on all the Open Championship venues and in this corner of Portugal he has created three fabulous loops of nine. All finish in front of a stylish and welcoming clubhouse – one of the most tranquil and pleasant experiences in the Algarve. If you can resist a refreshment here after stepping off the last green, you must have forgotten your wallet! Weaving between mature trees and with frequent elevation changes, you are constantly thinking at Vila Sol. On the first loop, four large lakes make you think a little more frantically... And throughout, there are some wickedly undulating greens, all manicured beautifully and running quick and true. Vale do Lobo is a quality complex with two special courses, Cotton’s original design being split to provide the basis of both, which were crafted by American Rocky Roquemore. here are both superb and it is impossible to determine which is the better. Play both – that is the only way to ensure you don’t miss out. The Ocean course features undulating fairways which run alongside a nature reserve, before leading gently down to the shores of the Atlantic. Its signature holes are two spectacular par 4s – the 11th and the 14th – which treat golfers to some of the most stunning views in the Algarve. The par-3 15th – which runs alongside the beach – is also world class. Vale do Lobo’s Royal boasts an iconic hole – the par-3 16th over the red cliffs which begins a lovely closing stretch offering some splendid views. The Royal is characterised by fairways rolling through stretches of pine and beautiful lakes surrounded by wild flowers. Its other feature hole is the short 9th, whose green is virtually an island. 2011 European Top 100 list. Elevated tees give you the chance to open your shoulders but the fairways are not as wide as elsewhere on the Algarve and there is a good deal of water around. Lee sculpted this outstanding course in 1988 and his design takes advantage of wonderful topography, winding its way gently over undulating pine woodland. Bordering the salt water lagoons, San Lorenzo is laid out in a figure of eight and at the heart lies a handsome clubhouse. The stretch from the 5th to the 8th is especially good, taking in elevated drives and magnificent views with the 8th a spectacular par 5. It borders the largest of the inland lakes and forces the third shot to carry water to a tight but beautifully positioned green. With the lake to your right, the tendency is to favour the left side; however, caution is necessary as bunkers and encroaching pines lie and wait on this side. Not many complexes offer three fine courses but historic Quinta do Lago is one. Joining the likes of Wentworth and Gleneagles, all three of its

courses are out of the top drawer and indeed it is difficult to split which is the best such is the overall quality. It might have been the third course to open at Quinta do Lago but the Laranjal track is far from the weak younger sibling. Originally an orange grove, it is now a beautiful golf experience where narrow fairways lined by umbrella pines, cork-oaks and orange trees as well as sculpted greens require concentration and accuracy to tame its distinctive terrain. The first five and the last four holes on the Norte, or North, layout were devised by American William Mitchell on sandy ground littered with umbrella pines trees. In the spring, the rough is covered with a blanket of wild flowers, heather and gorse. The bunkering is distinctive and penal, more so than elsewhere in the Algarve with the lakes on holes 12 to 18 claiming many victims. The remaining nine holes are a collaboration between Mitchell’s compatriots Lee and Roquemore and opened in 1989. The 14th just might be the outstanding hole on the course. Mitchell also designed Quinto do Lago’s beautifully-manicured American-style South Course. ■ GOLF ESCAPES 2012 31

ell people you are turning right rather than left out of Faro airport and most golfers may well assume you were heading for Spain. But before you arrive in Portugal’s Iberian neighbour, there are three outstanding hidden gems to enjoy. The East might well become the next key area in the Algarve if golfers are seeking a peaceful experience away from the big names and the bright lights. There is certainly little to dislike about this combination; excellent courses, a less crowded start-sheet and sub-four hour rounds. We’ll start our tour of The East’s terrific trio in Benamor, which is located just a few kilometres east of the wonderful, ancient city of Tavira.

32 GOLF ESCAPES 2012

Benamor was completed in the spring of 2000 and from the foothills of Barrocal, you will enjoy some of the best mountain and sea views the Algarve as to offer. But perhaps Benamor’s key advantage are the peaceful surroundings of an entirely construction-free resort. It opens up with a lovely hole which finishes with an acute dogleg and a green guarded by two bunkers. The 1st sets the tone for this pleasant round. Water appears only aesthetically on the front nine but takes its revenge on the 10th, with hazards waiting to snap up anything loose on either side of the fairway. There is even more of it on the 13th as water splits the

The closing stretch sees three of the course’s longest holes paired with a delightful short hole; a super way to conclude this terrific round. Next to Castro Marim, where there are three loops of nine – the Atlantic, the Guadiana and the Grouse – at the luxury development. With great views the course was designed to offer the maximum pleasure to all levels of golfers. Lakes, undulating fairways and elevated greens make this a delightful inland challenge. The lakes first come into play on the drive off the 5th tee, where a slice or even just a slight push will end up wet. Fast and true greens, several of them elevated and protected by bunkers, inviting elevated tees and dogleg fairways carved out of canyons are features of the courses. The Grouse is the newest of the three nine holes and has more open, far-reaching inland hill views. Although it only opened in 2008 it is already nicely mature. It has rolling terrain with fewer trees than the other two courses.

f you are thinking of a golf holiday in Portugal, the Vila Gale Hotel group will have the perfect base for you. It sounds a grand statement, but they really do have hotels all over the country. What’s more, they have hotels very close to both of the major golf areas; Lisbon and the Algarve. In fact they have so many hotels, the choice is a little bewildering at first glance. However, their website does all the thinking for you – and you can plan your break from either angle. Either decide where you want to play then work your way back to a nearby course – or decide where you want to stay and the website will filter which courses are nearby. It’s very clever and very useful. Just

go to www.vilagale.pt and click golf. In addition, Vila Gale even offer their own golf packages. There are way too many to mention here, but here’s an example: the Vilamoura Short Break includes three nights’ B&B accommodation in any of their Algarve hotels, plus three rounds of golf (Vila Sol, Millennium and Laguna) and transfers to the courses. Prices vary depending on the seasons but this could be yours in April, for example, for less than £400. And when you consider the golf alone would be approaching £300, that is exceptionally good value. With a budget flight, you’ve done the meat of your trip for less than £400. What’s more, no matter which Vila Gale hotel you stay in, you are guaranteed top quality; chic and

modern yet comfortable, they are impressive in every respect. The image above gives a taste of what they offer, but again their website is packed full of pictures of each hotel and gives a great indication of what is on offer. n

Lisbon

Portugal’s capital has great weather, a vibrant city and some of Europe’s best courses.

A

wonderful climate. A selection of worldclass golf courses. The attractions of a major capital city. It really is difficult to understand why Lisbon doesn’t have an even higher golfing profile. It boasts an average temperature of 17C and is gorgeous from May to September inclusive. April and October aren’t bad either. It is a vibrant city and boasts golf as varied – due to it being split up into three areas – as it is excellent. We shall start with the Estoril area, which is closest to the city itself. The Estoril club is a famous name in Portuguese golf and hosted numerous Portuguese Opens. It oozes class and tradition having been founded in the 1930s and being laid out by Mackenzie Ross. Oitavos Dunes was the highestranked Portuguese course in Golf World’s continental European Top 100 and is one of the few genuine links on the mainland. Its quality is reflected in its price tag, which is far from budget – but you get what you pay for, and this is top class. The big names keep coming and next is Penha Longa, which has a nine-hole course – Mosteiro – as well as the famous and infamous Atlantico. It was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr with assistance from

XX GOLF ESCAPES 2012

Kyle Phillips. “This course elegantly connects several different, yet equally beautiful and dramatic natural landscapes,” Phillips told Golf Escapes. “The middle section plays down into a large open valley and around a Roman aqueduct and the remaining holes move across high plateaus with views of the Atlantic.” Trent Jones Snr also made his mark on the Lisbon coast when he laid out charming Quinta da Marinha in 1984. Host of the Estoril Open in 2002, it offers views of the Atlantic – most memorably on the short, par-4 13th which plays down towards the sea – but for most of the course golfers are taking in vistas of Sintra mountain. Next to the Blue Coast, which is south of Lisbon and is headlined by Troia, another Trent Jones Snr track which was in our continental Europe Top 100. It takes a bit of getting to but this dunes and beach-dominated experience is well worth it. This majestic seaside track is buffeted by Atlantic breezes and is seriously exacting. The route to the 1st could not be more charming though – you reach it via a ferry. Another course to make our Top 100 was Quinta do Peru, the work of under-rated Rocky Roquemore. This American-style course is in lovely nick and not compromised by

OFF THE COU RSE • Get a ‘I was there’ picture next to the immense 15th Century Belem Tower. • Combine golf at Penha Longa by exploring the beguiling town of Sintra, former home to the royal family. • Explore St George’s Castle and scale the walls for breathtaking views of the city. • Indulge your taste buds in the Bairro Alto area, where all kinds of foods are available. excessive residential development. Two 18-holers at Ribagolfe within a forest of cork oak trees, a Donald Steel design at Santo Estevao and another 36-hole complex Aroeira complete the picture in this section. Finally, to the West Coast. Moving further north, much of the golf is centred around the medieval town of Obidos and is led by Praia d’El Rey, another genuine links and a fixture in our European Top 100. As well as its dunescape, seaside holes and views of the Atlantic, it also wanders inland among fragrant pine trees. Designed by Cabell B Robinson, the holes in the towering dunes are awesome and for a course which is just 12 years old, it has matured magnificently. Bom Successo was in the ‘Next 50’ collection of our recent European Top 100 and Steel’s design was unlucky not to make it into the main list. Roquemore also designed Golden Eagle in this area in 1994, and it is a fine example of target golf with manicured, tree-lined fairways leading to large, undulating greens. Finally, Royal Óbidos Spa & Golf Resort – 45 miles north of the city – is set to open in 2012, an 18-hole championship course designed by the late Seve Ballesteros. Lisbon is simply getting stronger. n

CYPRUS

FOCUS ON

CYPRUS

There are now a wealth of golf options to entice you to this sun-kissed island.

C

yprus is the short-haul destination with longhaul benefits. It takes less than five hours from these shores on a plane, but the year-round rewards are immense. Golf Escapes has been to the island in early May and late October and on both occasions it was seriously hot. You can basically play golf with the sun on your back every month of the year. You might be wise to ignore mid-December to mid-February, just in case, but you’d be unlucky if you got a week of truly rotten weather. For the rest of the year, you can take off with your clubs safe in the knowledge you will be playing in shorts and requiring sun screen. Nice weather alone isn’t enough to lure golfers to a country though – the courses need to be good too. And although golf on Cyprus is a relatively new pursuit, a couple of recent additions have suddenly given the island a very impressive portfolio. Aphrodite Hills is the Cypriot course most know best. Part of a stunning holiday resort near Paphos,

their course was designed by the respected Cabell Robinson. The course opened in 2002 as part of the first ever leisure and golf development of its kind in Cyprus. Stretching to nearly 6,900 yards, it overlooked the site where Aphrodite, the goddess of love, is said to have emerged from the sea. Here you tackle a mixture of challenging pot bunkers, manicured fairways of lush Bermuda grass and generous tiered greens. Aphrodite has now been joined in the Paphos area by a new championship layout in the form of the Sir Nick Faldo-designed Elea. It opened in autumn 2010 and

commands a striking location above the shimmering Mediterranean Sea. It has been routed through rolling countryside and features imposing weathered outcrops of limestone as well as mature carob and olive trees. Northern Cyprus is relatively undiscovered but Korineum Golf Resort will change that situation. Situated on the coast at the foot of The Five Finger Mountain, it weaves its way between olive and carob trees with exhilarating sea views. Finally, Secret Valley is south of Paphos and is set in a carob-lined scenic valley while Donald Steeldesigned Tsada opened in 1994 in a verdant valley. ■

LOOKING FOR SOMEWHERE TO STAY IN PAPHOS? TRY THIS BEACH HOTEL... Most of the good golf in Cyprus is centred around Paphos – and Alexander the Great Hotel is a terrific base for a sun-kissed break on the island. The Alexander the Great Beach Hotel in Paphos, on the south-west coast of Cyprus, is a luxurious complex directly overlooking

a ‘Blue Flag’ sandy beach. Built on an archaeological site dating back to 2000 BC, it is only a few minutes’ walk from the picturesque harbour and the centre of the renowned resort of Paphos. As a follow-up to the renovation of its guest rooms, the hotel’s public

areas have been recently revamped, aiming to maintain the hotel’s trademark elegance and style, while taking contemporary trends and preferences into account. The hotel features superior accommodation, fine-dining restaurants and a

range of bars as well as health, beauty and leisure facilities to satisfy today’s discerning traveller.

Costa Navarino

Greece

Costa Navarino Bernhard Langer and Robert Trent Jones Jnr have created two wonderful courses at this luxury destination overlooking the crystal clear Ionian Sea.

G

iven its massive popularity as a tourist destination, Greece has strangely been in a bit of a wilderness when it comes to golf. So let us all raise a glass of dark, stalky, red Nemea wine – a favourite in the Peloponnese – and drink to the success of two fabulous new courses to be found in Costa Navarino, where splendid golf is served amid stunning scenery and five-star accommodation. This is still an entirely unspoilt part of Greece. And here Starwood Hotels & Resorts is managing two upmarket hotels at Costa Navarino, named Navarino Dunes, the Westin Resort and its even more luxurious

sister, The Romanos, A Luxury Resort. The hotels and The Dunes course look out over the Ionian Sea and The Bay Course at the nearby Navarino Bay area looks out over the historic bay where a great sea battle was fought between English, Russian, French and Greek fleets against the Turks in 1827. A boat trip around the bay is available from the nearby small fishing town of Pylos and is well worth taking. But we are primarily here to golf as well as relax and learn a little of the fascinating history of the Messinian region. So we can hire a buggy or enjoy a good walk around the older of the two courses, the Dunes, Greece’s first

QUICK GUIDE GETTING THERE In addition to seasonal direct flights to Kalamata from select airports, daily flights now arrive from Athens (170 miles away). signature course created by Bernhard Langer and the astute Ross McMurray of European Golf Design, who designed the Twenty Ten course at Celtic Manor. Managed by renowned Troon Golf, the Dunes opened in 2010 and is bedding down superbly – it went straight into Golf World’s continental Top 100 that year. Given the unspoilt beauty of the area, it took local boy Vassilis Constantakopoulus and his family much time to fulfil his lifelong ambition (that upon completion will cost over £1bn) and create an environmentally friendly tourist destination in his home region. Constantakopoulus is a local boy who started out his working life as a

Costa Navarino’s world-class golf courses offer views of the Ionian.

“It is rich in natural beauty and culture and will appeal to golfers looking for a beautiful retreat. I’m sure many from around the world will travel to see its remarkable landscape and play what is a world-class course.” – Bernhard Langer, major champion

deck hand on board a ship and became the owner of one of the largest container shipping companies. The 6,794-yard Dunes course moves from the hillside down along the cliff edge with some glorious views out to sea and spectacular shadows cast across the rolling fairways and raised greens with subtle banks and borrows. The opening hole, a testing 434yard par 4 off the back tees to a raised green fronted by three deep bunkers is pleasing yet gives no idea of the wonders that are yet to come. You get that on the 2nd tee, so there is not long to wait. Looking downhill at this 352yard par 4 with the crystalline blue bay ahead, dotted with small islands

STAY & E AT Built using natural stone, low-rise villa clusters blend in with the landscape. Inside The Romanos, a Luxury Collection Resort and The Westin Resort, there is an ambience of elegant luxury. A selection of culinary venues offers all-day dining and two specially-designed children centres allow parents freedom to play golf or indulge in the many actitivites; the Navarino Racquet Academy, off-road biking, hiking, kite surfing, kayaking, scuba diving, squash and workout classes.

and soaring mountains to your back, this hole just leaps up and shouts, ‘Welcome to Costa Navarino.’ This is a beautiful track and one that will not be brutal, especially when played from the men’s forward tees of 6,000 yards. Yet there are some wonderfully testing holes and even more breathtaking views. Keep the ball in play and use the sea breeze whenever you can and enjoy the delights of the par-5 530yard dog-leg 12th where you tee off with your back to the sea while ahead of you, left and right, lie cavernous kidney-shaped bunkers and the tightest of entries to a sloping green. By the time we reach the long uphill par-5 18th, and had a round

to remember whatever our score, the 3,500sq metre clubhouse awaits with a well-stocked bar and a panoramic terrace upon which to enjoy a snack and slake the thirst. And just two miles up the road, Robert Trent Jones Jnr has just opened his par-71 Bay Course which, he told Golf Escapes “opens up with a boom like a Beethoven symphony” and more sensational coastal views. Shorter, at 6,336 yards, than the Dunes and less demanding, this is still a fabulous resort course that sweeps through valleys of olive trees and along the shoreline of the Navarino Bay. Golf in Greece is hard to find but track down Costa Navarino to enjoy one of Europe’s very finest tourism destinations. n GOLF ESCAPES 2012 47

Household names and hidden gems combine to offer a stellar collection.

n

ew courses have opened in Spain in recent years and other more established courses have come to the fore, but Andalucia remains the powerhouse region in the home of golf holidays. The most southerly area of Spain has more world-class courses than exist in the whole of most countries. They are some of the best-known courses in Europe, names such as Valderrama, San Roque and Sotogrande. Let us begin our tour of Spain here, as we try to break down the myriad options in this country of 300 courses to give you an informed choice for your next break. Valderrama is the most famous course in Spain by some distance after it hosted the Ryder Cup in 1997 as well as several Tour events. Laid out by Robert Trent Jones and enjoying exceptional conditioning, it was tweaked by Kyle Phillips to keep it at the top of everyone’s wish list. Phillips’ modifications have ensured driver is required on more holes by even the strongest players while green shapes were restored to their original form. Another Trent Jones creation, Sotogrande Old, is now too short – at less than 6,900 yards – to test Tour players – but it remains a brilliant venue for the rest of us – and arguably superior technically to neighbouring Valderrama. La Reserva is a new kid on the block in Sotogrande after being opened in 2003. At nearly 7,400 yards it is a big, bold track and American in style (designed by Cabell Robinson) with generous, undulating fairways and heavily-bunkered greens. Robinson is also the man behind the new course of Finca Cortesin. At over 7,600 yards off the tips, the home of the Volvo World Matchplay Championship is one of the longest courses in Europe. Robinson also laid out Santana, in a former avocado plantation, near Malaga while nearby Torrequebrada is a real unsung hero of the Costa del Sol. Soon after working on Sotogrande, Trent Jones worked on Las Brisas, located to the west of Marbella and just a couple of miles

QUICK GUIDE GETTING THERE As most courses are located in or near tourist areas, it’s very accessible. The budget airlines fly frequently to the likes of Alicante, Reus (for Barcelona), Palma (for Majorca) and even Las Americas (Tenerife). Or take the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao and play topclass Neguri and other local courses?

RELAX & ENJOY Playing in Spain is laid back, although handicap certificates are often asked for at the better venues so take yours. Dress codes are suitably relaxed: no need for knee high socks but avoid football shirts and surf shorts. Finally, a word of warning – outside of the very expensive venues, if you play at peak periods don’t expect anything other than four-hour rounds – or worse. If you don’t want to be stacked up buggy bumper to buggy bumper, tee off at 8am or 4pm.

inland from the swish beach resort of Puerto Banus. In the coastal town of Cadiz, Arcos Gardens only opened in 2006 but has already been selected by the Spanish and English amateur teams as a winter training base. Nearby Montecastillo is a Jack Nicklaus course which got on the golfing map in 1994 when it hosted the Turespana Masters and then the Volvo Masters from 1997 to 2001. The San Roque complex is one of the most famous in golf and the Old ➨ and the New remain very popular with visitors and ex-pats. The Old was designed by Dave Thomas and offers plenty of water and bunkers – redesigned by Seve Ballesteros – as well as a sprinkling of star dust. Pete Dye’s son Perry is the man behind the New, which continues to rapidly gain favour in southern Spain. Dye moulded the contours of the hills into an enjoyable test for scratch players as well as higher handicappers. Lovely views to the Guadalquiton River and the Mediterranean Sea ease any pain hacking about in the cork oaks. Also in and around Marbella there is Los Naranjos, next to Las Brisas – which has generous fairways, lots of water, mature palm trees and slick greens – plus Mijas, whose Los Lagos course opened in 1976 when Trent Jones was prolific in the area. Both nines finish with fabulous, lakeside holes. Robinson’s La Cala (America) – with five par 5s – and Los Flamingos, by Ryder Cup player Antonio Garrido, are also here and very good. Arana’s Aloha was one of the first courses to be built during the proliferation of courses in Spain 30 years ago and is to be found in Golf Valley, the stretch of land between Malaga and San Roque which is home to so many of these fine tracks. Slightly apart from the crowd are El Rompido, in Huelva on the western side of Andalucia, – which blends seamlessly into the wetlands of River Piedras – and Real Club de Sevilla, by Jose Maria Olazabal. It’s 7,140 yards but has generous fairways. Nine lakes and 90 bunkers mean it is no stroll. Murcia is well know for the La ➨ GOLF ESCAPES 2012 49

HINTS AND TIPS THE CLIMATE Dealing with mainland Spain first, there is a distinct difference between the north and south of the country. In Santander in the north for example, you can expect the sun on your back from April to the middle of September with an average of at least six hours of sunshine. Take note, though, that only June and July guarantee relatively rain-free months. In the south, Almeria has, for example, nine hours of sunshine from April to September and very little rain from the middle of April until October. The courses in the Canaries benefit from year-round sunshine and at just four hours away by plane are fantastic winter options. WHEN TO GO In the middle of summer, it is uncomfortably hot in the middle of the day so if you head off in these months be prepared to play early or late afternoon. That is, however, arguably the best time to play in the Canaries. Their courses are packed in the winter (see above for reason why) but go in the summer and you will (or at least you should) breeze round in four hours. Just remember to play early or late in the day.

50 GOLF ESCAPES 2012

Manga complex and its three courses provide three different challenges as well as some fine practice facilities. Also in Murcia is Hacienda del Alamo, a Dave Thomas resort course with an abundance of water features and sand, and Mar Menor, a fabulous course which is attached to an equally delightful Intercontinental hotel. The Valencia area is home to two outstanding venues; El Saler and El Bosque. The former is arguably Arana’s finest work, a classy links with sand dunes or umbrella pines lining the fairways. El Bosque is another Trent Jones classic amid undulating, pine-clad parkland. In Almeria, don’t forget about the delightful Valle de Este complex, with its lovely course and accommodation options. The north of Spain is rarely commended but it has some notable courses which make a trip beyond Britons’ usual paths worthwhile. Neguri, in Algorta, is located on

TREASURE ISLANDS Islands under Spanish influence seriously add to the country’s spectrum of courses. Majorca is, pound for pound, arguably the finest ‘region’ of Europe; there are six top-class courses here and several other worthy of your attention. Meanwhile the Canaries is as good a winter golf destination as any, whether Tenerife or Gran Canary. On Majorca, the addition of the magnificent Son Gual has raised its profile further. It has quickly matured since 2007 and could host a European Tour event tomorrow. Alcanada is another stunning course, the only track on the island which is next to the sea with views across Bay of Alcudia to the lighthouse. This Robert Trent Jones Jnr design is one of the top 20 courses in Spain. Pula opened in the mid 90s but it wasn’t until it was sculpted by Jose Maria Olazabal in 2004 that it became one of the island’s most stylish. There is also Puntiro, a Nicklaus design in a mature 165-acre estate as well as Son Vida – the oldest course on the island which was designed by Fred Hawtree round the Bay of Palma. Two courses at Marriott Son Antem are excellent resort golf. On Tenerife there are two superstars; Seve Ballesteros’ clifftop thriller Buenavista in the north west and Abama, a Dave Thomas effort which is both at once scenic and challenging – especially the Augusta-like greens. Also in the south of the island is John Jacobs’ lovely resort course Las Americas and the three loops of nine at Golf del Sur, where the sea is almost always visible. On Gran Canaria, El Cortijo and Maspalomas are topclass courses.

the north coast in the Basque region, and is laid out on a headland which juts into the Bay of Biscay. You sail past it on the Portsmouth to Bilbao ferry and so you won’t be surprised to hear this clifftop course’s difficulty is much dependent on the strength of the wind. Pedrena, in Cantabria, is a Harry Colt design from 1928 which is most famous for being where Seve learnt the game. Ulzama in Pamplona was laid out by Arana and is found on hilly terrain in an old oak forest and, unusually for Spain, you must deal with blind shots now and again. To the north of Barcelona, PGA Golf Catalunya is a new star. Old pals Angel Gallardo and Neil Coles have worked cleverly to route it impressively on difficult terrain. The result is an abundance of elevated tees, sweeping downhill holes and breathtaking panoramic views. There is also not a weak hole and you even get the occasional glimpse of the Pyrenees. El Prat is another star-studded course near Barcelona, Greg Norman and Alfonso Viador placing a great emphasis on the spectacular. It has 45 holes in beautiful countryside. Sant Cugat was founded by British and American golf lovers nearly 100 years ago and they asked the legendary Harry Colt to lay out their course. It remained much as the Englishman intended until 2004 when a few of the short holes were altered to add a bit of length. Emporda, near the coast in Gualta, is the work of Robert von Hagge,. Home to two 18-hole courses, the Links and the Forest, it is a great option away from the madding crowds. North east of Barcelona, the Pyrenees are a fabulous backdrop to Fontanals, while Platja de Pals in Girona is a Fred Hawtree linksy course through pines next to Playa de Pals beach. In and around the capital there are three especially good courses, the best being Golf Santander, a Rees Jones design of 7,500 yards which is rated highly by Spain’s Tour pros. Puerta de Hierro’s Arriba course is one of the oldest courses in the country and has been worked on by Tom Simpson, Colt and Phillips. Finally, there is former Spanish Open host Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, a lovely parkland. n

nsouciant. Blase. Nonchalant. All three words have their origins in France and all accurately describe the French’s attitude towards their golf courses. It is the only conclusion one can arrive at given you rarely hear the French shouting from the rooftops about their courses… when they are blessed with the most outstanding collection in mainland Europe. Ask French Tour players about the wealth of quality of their golf and you get the stereotypical Gallic shrug of the shoulders. “So what?” their body language expresses. “We’ve always had those courses.” This is certainly true, although it hardly explains why the French –

54 GOLF ESCAPES 2012

hardly reluctant to boast about their red wine or mesmeric rugby players – aren’t a bit more vocal about their golf courses. They had as many entries in Golf World’s Continental Top 100 – a healthy 17 – as anyone bar Spain. But it is not the quantity which is so impressive, it’s the quality. France was home to the top two, three of the top five and six of the top 20. No other country came close to matching that haul. Now the slightly bad news. The top two, Morfontaine and Les Bordes are only playable with a member. Their exclusivity is a shame, for these are courses to rival any inland venues in Britain. The third French course on the list could not be more different.

And it is of course the venue for the 2018 Ryder Cup; signs perhaps, the French are starting to realise they have a rather good product? Le Golf National has only been open for a couple of decades but has held the French Open nearly 20 times. It is built on unremarkable land and the fact you can imagine yourself playing a Scottish links at some points and a Florida parkland at others is a credit to the skill of the shapers and designers.

Superb value, wonderful weather and Top 100 courses… what’s not to like?

n

ovember 18, 1994 was a great day for golf; the game was born in Turkey. Starting with the opening of National Golf Club in Antalya, golf on the south coast of Turkey has snowballed into the biggest challenger to Iberia. When you consider the wealth of options in Belek today, the fact that day was less than 18 years ago is staggering. There are now 17 courses on this golden strip of terrain and the proliferation of venues has been brilliant news for golfers. Turkey has a couple of distinct advantages over its competitors: it’s not in the euro, so our pounds go further; and its southerly location gives it a couple of extra months of superb weather compared to countries further north in Europe.

eXPert OPINION

MAXX RoYAL “Turkey is an up and coming golf destination and to be given the opportunity to design a course in this developing market is a great honour. I hope the work we have done will further enhance the Belek region as a top golfing destination.” – Colin MontgoMerie

XX GOLF ESCAPES 2012

So not only is it cheaper to holiday there – and there are some amazing all-inclusive deals to be snapped up in five-star hotels – you can head there in November confident you will be greeted by sunshine. The courses aren’t just fields with flags in them either. They are of a high enough quality for Belek to have been named Europe’s Golf Destination of the Year in 2008 in the prestigious IAGTO Awards. A mark of the progress of golf in Belek was demonstrated by the fact IAGTO held the International Golf Travel Market there last November. Some seriously big names are also involved; Sir Nick Faldo designed the three loops of nine at the Cornelia De Luxe. No expense was spared here on and off the course at this typically tricky Faldo design which requires accuracy to stay out

of the trees. The Prince combination was No.87 in Golf World’s European Top 100 last year. The man who succeeded Faldo as European captain, Colin Montgomerie, has also left his mark in Belek. The Montgomerie Maxx Royal, formerly known as Papillon, is routed through sandy seaside ridges interspersed with pine and eucalyptus forest. Montgomerie has a long-running successful relationship with European Golf Design and together they create strategic courses with astute and penal bunkering. Another course to make it into Golf World’s Top 100 was Carya in the Kadriye Region, which is the work of Open legend Peter Thomson and his design consultants Ross Perrett and Tim Lobb The Australian believes Carya to

be reminiscent of the heathland courses in Surrey, dominated as it is by pine and eucalyptus trees. Antalya Golf Club boasts two courses, the PGA Sultan and the Pasha. The latter is a fine holiday course among mature woodland while the Sultan is a different scenario altogether; another EGD layout, this seriously tough, 7,083yard course comprises lakes, pot bunkers and trees. Another European Top 100 course, it is carved through terrain which was once more swamp than golf course. The top-rated course in Belek is a venue which offers something totally different; a genuine links. Lykia Links moved up 11 places to 52 in Golf World’s 2011 Top 100 and, along with the Sultan, is the real championship test in the area.

Designed by Pete Dye’s son Perry, it is 6,924 yards and incorporates deep bunkers, protected by railway sleepers, and massive waste areas with slick greens. “For a course on the Mediterranean, Lykia Links is pretty hard to beat,” Dye told Golf Escapes. “American designers don’t get that much chance to work on genuine links – so I was pretty glad to be given that job!” The support cast to these starstudded courses is excellent too. Gloria has a total of 45 holes at the foot of the Taurus Mountains, with the Old the stand-out venue. Kaya Eagles has been open for four years now and is a David Jones design amid a woodland of pine, eucalyptus and olive trees with eight lakes creating lots of water hazards. Dave Thomas is fairly prolific on the continent and his Belek work can be seen at Robinson (Nobilis), which is routed through a forest alongside the Acısu River with views of the Taurus Mountains. Sueno opened in late 2008 and has two courses – the Dunes resort course and the longer, narrower and much tougher Pines course. The two tracks feature a total of 20 lakes and 128 bunkers. urkey is arguably THE golf destination in the world these days. From a standing start, it has become a serious player on the golf holiday scene in little more than a decade. And think of golf in Turkey and you immediately think ‘Belek’. But now there is a new player on the Turkish scene: Kusadasi International Golf Resort, the first ever leisure and golf development of its kind near the Aegean Sea. Located 55 miles south of Izmir international airport, it is home to a magnificent 18-hole championship course, spreading over 6,930 yards and overlooking the site where gods and goddesses are said to have emerged from the sea. This spectacular golf course has just been officially opened and was designed by the acclaimed architect, Jose Canales Galvez of Mas Golf Uno Golf Design. This respected firm believe Kusadasi to be the perfect mix of challenging pot bunkers, manicured fairways of lush Bermuda grass and generous tiered fast greens.

Visually spectacular, the course expands through indigenous olive and carob trees and is built on two plateaus separated by a dramatic ravine with outstanding views over the National Park. Untouched nature as well as exhilarating views to mountain ranges and the Aegean Sea are the backdrop to this unique design and the generous practice facilities; these are the striking aspects of the new Kusadasi championship course. It has plenty of length off the tips but even off forward tees, the natural landscape of the 70-acre site means it is a real challenge for even the experienced travelling golfer. It offers a great example of risk and reward golf on the back nine especially, with two artificial lakes, 54 bunkers (many severe pot bunkers) and several carries over gorges. But five teeing grounds per hole means higher handicappers – and especially ladies – can enjoy themselves without an onerous test. It is the first golf club in Turkey to have high-quality residential complex attached. Here, there are various luxurious apartments, studios and

Buggies are available while a shuttle service connects the residential area with the modern and functional clubhouse. Built on two levels, the clubhouse offers stunning views of the mountains as well as the sea and you can almost see the whole course from the terrace. It has a first-class restaurant with cocktail bar as well as a VIP Lounge, a golf reception, caddy shack, locker rooms and a pro shop offering the latest fashion in golf apparel. A team of resident PGA-qualified professionals – Turkish, English, German and Swedish speaking – are equipped with a full video swing analysis system to provide the very best one-on-one tuition. There is a large 30-bay, 330-yardlong driving range, a short-game area with a large pitching and chipping green. olf was first introduced to Argentina as far back as 1879. Then, Scotsman Henry Smith was delayed at Buenos Aires port because Customs were alarmed by the wooden and metal sticks in his luggage. Within a few years, the attitude towards the Royal & Ancient game had changed somewhat, as the arrival of railway engineers from the UK brought a love of this fascinating sport. place in 1885 at the Plaza de San Martín. The game spread rapidly, with clubs being founded; by 1897, the Río de la Plata Amateur Championship was established. This early passion for the game explains why there are as many as 320 courses in Argentina. Along with two other British exports, rugby and especially football, golf has a great tradition in Argentina. As well as a surprising number of courses, Argentina also has a wellestablished and well-honed ability to

host golf holidays. Add in the wonderful scenery, the world’s best steaks and equally tempting red wine and you have a destination which emphatically ticks every box. Golf in Argentina is expanding too; from 1995 to 2004, the number of pro golfers increased 50 per cent and stunning new courses have opened – 85 since 2004 – to add to the traditional venues. It has also produced many top-class golfers – Roberto de Vicenzo, Vicente Fernández, Eduardo Romero, Ángel

Cabrera and Andrés Romero. Argentina was named as the best golf Destination of Latinamerica and Caribe in 2008 and 2011 – the first country to win the award twice. Let’s start our tour of the country in the capital and its pretty suburbs. There are 90 courses in this area and it features traditional venues such as the Jockey Club – home to two tracks by Dr Alister Mackenzie in mature forest – the woodland-style Olivos and Hurlingham, British in both name and nature. There are also modern, Americanstyle courses headed by Buenos Aires GC, a Robert von Hagge design which hosted the World Cup in 2000 won by Tiger Woods and David Duval. Meanwhile Pilar Golf Club is dominated by water hazards and boasts wonderful facilities. While in the capital enjoying the golf, you can also go to a Boca Juniors football match – a unique experience – take a tour of the subtropical Tigre forests and waterways, enjoy the cafe culture, tango at the Centro Cultural Torquato Tasso or pay homage to Evita at the presidential palace, Casa Rosada. The Atlantic Coast also features magnificent courses – Los Acantilados and Playa Grande, in Mar del Plata – while terrific golf is also on offer in the coastal cities of Pinamar and Cariló. Miramar offers a taste of home with a classic links and also close to the coast are Tandil and Sierra de la Ventana. Patagonia is blessed with perhaps Argentina’s most outstanding courses; from the most southerly course, nine-hole Ushuaia, to the superstar tracks in the north close to San Carlos de Bariloche. Llao Llao is set on a wooded peninsula virtually surrounded by a lake with glacier-capped mountains bordering Chile framing its views. Its lakeside setting makes it a must play. Greg Norman is poised to open a hillside overlooking Chapelco, El Desafio, which will make this area the most celebrated in the country – because Chapelco Golf & Resort is the first golf course designed in South America by Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus II. Plotted in rugged landscape between Bariloche and San Martin

WHen tO gO Argentina’s seasons are the exact reverse of ours, so while we are shivering at home you can be enjoying golf in the sun. The northern regions of Salta and Mendoza are especially nice while Patagonia has warm and sunny summers but snow-capped winters. Like most things in Argentina, it very much suits British visitors.

Mountains bordering Chile frame the course at Llao Llao.

OFF tHe COU r Se Argentina is a country full of attractions – not just golf and wine (a vineyard is pictured below). Gastronomy, luxury hotels, fly fishing, skiing, thermal spas, horse riding with gauchos, white water rafting mountain biking and observing wildlife (Andean condors, the world’s largest flying birds can be spotted here) are just some of the activities you can enjoy when not sipping wine or hitting drives.

de los Andes, it is a 7,163-yard course of rare natural beauty with the par-4 12th simply wonderful. Arelauquen is another course framed by an amazing landscape of mountains, lakes and ancient trees. It was designed by Fernandez, for so long the country’s favourite golfing son… before Cabrera came along and won two Majors. In the north west, Salta is on the Tropic of Capricorn and enjoys over 300 days of sun per year. Mendoza also benefits from a similarly temperate climate and this weather and high altitude is perfect for growing grapes. This is where golf and wine become inextricably linked in Argentina and if you enjoy both, rarely will you find such a happy combination. This region, for example, is notable for Malbec as well as for its Torrontes white wines and Chardonnay. And at the many wineries which encourage you to visit you can watch the process, sample the produce and even have a go at blending your own. The Tupungato course at the foot

of the Andes sits deep in one of the world’s most picturesque wineproducing regions, and the layout of this course has the stamp of European elegance. Majestic scenery, marked by the Tupungato Volcano, this magnificent golf course blends the beauty of the vineyards and offers an experience unique in the world, in an idyllic spot. Golf among vineyards is also on offer at the Bob Cupp-designed La Estancia de Cafayate, a 7,600-yard challenge which plays a lot shorter due to being located at 6,000ft. After a front nine through the vines and olive trees, you then enter dunes. Salta, famous for its Torrontes wine, is home to the storied Salta Open. Here, you play round the beauty of the mountains along narrow fairways in woodland with water on four holes. Its small greens run fast due to the high temperature in the region. The Jockey Club at Tucumán oozes history and is surrounded by dense woodland. Meanwhile in Cordoba, Valle del Golf has just opened, a stunning Nicklaus design with 27 holes. Argentina has it all; it just might be the finest destination for a golf holiday you’ve never considered. ■ GOLF ESCAPES 2012 75

he golf on offer in Malaysia is very impressive – but this country has too much to offer to merely play golf during a holiday here. Described as ‘truly Asia’, Malaysia is a bubbling melting pot of races and religions as a result of it being a part of the international spice route many hundreds of years ago. So, here Malays, Indians, Chinese and many other ethnic groups live together in peace and harmony. Such multiculturalism has made Malaysia a gastronomical paradise as well as a venue for colourful festivals. Its landscape is equally varied; reefs and rainforests, mountains and minarets, skycrapers and golddomed Malay mosques.

Malaysia can offer vast cities such as Kuala Lumpur but also jungles teeming with exotic species and coral reefs where turtles, sharks and tropical fish lurk. Part of the reason for Malaysia’s incredible diversity is the fact it is split into two geographically: on one half is Peninsular Malaysia, bordering Thailand and on the other East Malaysia, the northern half of the island of Borneo, next to Indonesia and Brunei. For city lights, head for the Peninsular, for nature and rainforests at their best, head across the South China Sea for the states of Sabah and Sarawak. The common theme is the Malaysian people; always, they are laid back and friendly. Before we move onto the golf, it is

worth spending a little more time on the non-golf attractions. It has, for example, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, where the classic paradise of white sand is lapped by crystal clear water. Datai Bay is one such example at the north-west corner of Langkawi island. It also happens to have the most exclusive golf resort on the island; Datai Bay Golf Resort. Daily ferries and flights land at Langkawi from the mainland as visitors lap up the beaches, coral reefs, palms and duty-free shopping. Or you could chill out on Penang’s sun-kissed beaches, explore historic colonial George Town and savour its food. The islands of Pulau Perhentian are less commercially developed examples of ‘paradise’.

Several international tournaments have been held in Malaysia, including the Malaysian Open, a co-sanctioned event between the Asian and European Tours – hence why Messrs McIlroy, Schwartzel et al were in town. In the Kedah region the stand-out course of the eight is Datai while in neighbouring Penang, Bukit Jambul track by Trent Jones has hosted ladies’ Tour events. To the south, in Perak, there are six courses with two on the coast benefitting from views across the Straits of Malacca – Ron Fream’s Damai Laut and Royal Teluk. Now the superpower in the Gulf, this ambitious member emirate now has three world-class courses to tempt you to its immaculate fairways.

f someone had said 10 years ago that the European Tour’s week in Dubai would become the weakest of the tournaments held in the Gulf, they would have been summarily dismissed. Back in the day when it was still unusual to see tournaments outside continental Europe, the Dubai Desert Classic was the jewel in the crown of the early-season schedule. For confirmation of this scenario, we need merely recall it was the one place Tiger could be lured to from America. In 2012, that has all changed. It wasn’t Dubai that Tiger made his European Tour destination for this season, it was Abu Dhabi. And he might not be world no.1 any more, but the movements of Woods remain a very good antennae in a wider sense; Abu Dhabi is now the superpower in the gulf. The event there is as close as you can get to a Major; there is good

reason to suggest it is more exciting than some WGC events and is right up there with the Players – certainly from a European standpoint. The action is played out when we are dealing with frosty early mornings over here and the sight of tanned golfers in shirt sleeves playing on a beautifully manicured course reminds one warmer and drier days aren’t too far away. The morning slot might not suit all but it is in many respects less anti-social than trying to convince the family that watching a grind round Doral is a good idea on a Saturday evening. And then there’s the course. Abu Dhabi Golf Club began the golf story here and it remains an outstanding course. It is an incredibly difficult resort-style course with better conditioning than anything you’re ever likely to see elsewhere. The greens are lightning fast and

true, the fairways and tees like carpets, and the rough thick. Managed by Troon Golf, Abu Dhabi GC remains arguably the course with most appeal. Saadiyat Beach and Yas Links are stunning in their own right, but you could argue they are a lot less playable. The stand-out holes here are probably the mid-length par-3 12th that’s played almost totally over water with a stone wall behind the green, the 9th – a long par-4 with water either side of the fairway, leading up to the famous hawk clubhouse – and the 5th, a really difficult right-to-left dogleg par4 risk and reward hole. Saadiyat Beach opened in January 2010, and this Gary Player design is the Middle East’s first beach-front course. The course, which is also managed by Troon Golf, is stunning visually – even with the dozens of hotels being erected around some of the holes closest to the sea – and is

Saadiyat Beach offers some truly sensational views.

EXPERT OPINION

Yas Links very much a tough test when you go to the back tees and face a huge 7,806 yards. Saadiyat has lots of protection besides its length and is littered with bunkers and hazards that look really intimidating on the tee. In reality, lots of them are not in play, but it’s hard to get that into your head when you’re standing on the tee. Many holes stand out here, but two live longest in the memory. The 5th, or Dolphin View as it is named, boasts scenery unlike any other on the course. A long par-4 that meanders right to left around crystal-blue water, it demands an arrow straight drive and a solid approach as the green is small and fast. It is very open and has views of the sea. Wind is therefore a factor. The other stand-out hole for many is the driveable par-4 10th known as the Mousetrap. From

where visitors play it is under 340 yards and reachable if you really get hold of one, but there is a lot of risk involved as the hole is packed with cavernous bunkers on all sides meaning an iron off the tee is the best bet for anyone low on confidence or with a card to protect. One thing worth considering when playing Saadiyat is to invest in a buggy as some of the scenic walks from greens to tees are fairly long. Countless courses the world over claim to play like genuine Scottish links, but very few live up to the billing. One that very much does, however, is Yas Links. Designed by Kyle Phillips – the highly-respected American designer who was the mastermind behind Kingsbarns – the course is built among impressive sand dunes that were manually dredged from the water alongside the course.

“It is an authentic links, not only because of its rumpled, all-sand base fairways, but also thanks to Paspalum grass that runs through tees, fairways and greens, and the areas around greens, which are firm and fast – similar features as the old fescue grass links of Scotland.” –Kyle PhilliPs

It almost looks as though they’ve been airlifted from the Fife coast. Yas has plenty of length (it measures 7,414 yards off the tips) but relies more on its rough (a mix between thick grass and sand that is tough to get out of) and wind than hazards to punish visitors. Several holes demand carries over water and play alongside the drink. As it is still maturing, its fairways can snag the ball on bump and run shots and prevent you from playing authentic links golf. But this will soon change as the course gets older. The finish is a arguably the highlight, with the hardest hole on the course – the par-4 16th – preceding a tough 200-yard par 3 that could be mistaken for the 14th at Kingsbarns, and the extremely long 18th – a 646-yard par 5. n
