Mountain High. Even with legal marijuana, the original Rocky Mountain High is still the draw for LGBT tourists. A former Atlantan helps you tour gay Denver.
Westside Story. Gay guys coming together on a great patio now includes the Barcelona Wine Bar location that’s part of an increasingly awesome Westside revival.
Prom Dates. A Broadway-bound show, a gay theme, and one of the most inclusive theaters in town. The Alliance does it again with The Prom.
Dog Dudes. Gay men are more inseparable from their pets than from their husbands. Meet five Atlanta guys and their four-legged best friends.

Hot Looks. The dog days of summer bring the heat, but your city style is still on point in pale hues and light fabrics that look great and feel even better.

Editor’s Note Everything is hotter in Atlanta – and not in the usual good way. It’s like the sun is beating down on us more just to put a finer point on the madness of current events and the cluster of this election cycle. This year’s record temps are more suited to Louisiana, Texas or Florida than Georgia.
First up, photographer Gastohn Barrios returns with light and airy looks that let you survive summer in the city with style. His exclusive shoot for us in Buenos Aires heats up our cover spread, while our Grooming column keeps you cool with summer products.
Speaking of those places, this issue is our first since the Pulse shootings and the unrest over racial inequities in law enforcement in Baton Rouge, Dallas and elsewhere. The Goliath guys can’t let it go by without acknowledging our deep sorrow and intense anger alongside the rest of the community.
We bring it all home with local guys and their pups. Nothing says “dog days” like meeting five gay Atlantans and their precious pooches in gorgeous shots by gay shutterbug Preston Woods. Elsewhere in town, catch the buzz about Westside dining at Barcelona, plus Broadway babies in the new gay-themed prom play at Alliance Theater.
Learning to go on, even as we steel ourselves for another possible incident, is part of what LGBT people will remember about 2016, in the way that 2015 was defined by legal marriage equality. We can only believe that the tough lessons – to keep living our lives, to continue patronizing our favorite businesses, to embrace our diversity in every gorgeous rainbow color – will make us stronger and better able to withstand whatever the world throws at us. Yes, even this wicked heat. To us, living boldly, looking up and moving forward means doing it fabulously. That’s why this issue of Goliath heads into the hottest weeks of summer with renewed determination to keep bringing you the best in style, the arts, culture and community.
8 AUGUST 2016 • V2 I6
If we’ve learned anything this summer, it’s to keep our heads up, appreciate what and who we have, and live with intention. I hope you take some time with this issue to inspire your next move.

Prepping the skin for a shave is key to a perfect result. Wash your face and stubble to remove excess oils and lift the hair from the skin so the blade captures it more easily.

Doing Gay Denver Right By Berlin Sylvestre
From the 404 to the 303, one local native left for higher ground and now reports back that there’s so much more to doing gay Denver than the recent legalization of marijuana.
A
s a homegrown Georgian and Atlanta ex-pat living in Colorado, I know that Midtown has its charms. Our queens slay hard enough to get on Drag Race. We’ve got the most raucous patio seshes. We eat dinner alongside A-list celebs, and we enjoy an amazing diversity of gay life. But for some, it gets better. Denver is filled with the fittest, chillest, most liberal-minded queer people, and when they hear a Southern accent, they home in like a heat-seeking missile for an ear-tickling that only a sexy Southerner can provide. Apart from our Southern charm, the natives here take great interest when we talk about our cultural differences. For one, they find the idea of a concentrated area for gays to party charming and convenient. In Denver, the clubs are spread across Downtown in ways that Uber drivers pay their bills on. Imagine if Burkhart’s and Oscar’s were three miles apart, and Joe’s and Einstein’s were on different interstate off-ramps. That’s how it is to party with the gays in Denver. Make sure you have a DD or Uber/Lyft account on lock. As to the clubs themselves, I’ll make it easy by way of the Atlanta clubs we all know and love. Tracks is like Jungle on Halloween, only every weekend. You’ll find a crowd and a fresh face

on the entire establishment nearly every time you walk in. They spend jillions on changing the theme every week. Boyztown is basically BJ Roosters, but with way more grinding. There are more than a dozen other bars, too, but let’s talk about the Denver experience itself.
won’t know when to put the camera down. Find kayaking on Clear Creek, windsurfing at Aurora Reservoir, hiking by Maxwell Falls, and biking Bear Creek, just to offer a taste. Aspen Gay Ski Week is a favorite; get there to see hotties who just stepped off a Gucci ad and into a hot tub.
Denver is filled with the fittest, chillest, most liberal-minded queer people.
Expect to be invited to a brewery, or make those plans to do so on your own. This place has more per capita than anywhere. Denver Beer, Strange Craft Beer Company and Great Divide Brewing are among the favorites. Locals might also ask if you want to ride along to catch a show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre.
Yes, you can step into a shop and buy herb. The edibles even come in crazy candies, drinks, gummies, suckers, you name it. It’s like Willy Wonka’s Weed Factory. The scenery isn’t nearly as green, but it is beautiful. A giant, open skyline doesn’t include as many trees as Georgia, but with the hug of mountains, there’s a gorgeous view just about anywhere you go. Even with all the draws of the city and its laidback culture, make time to see the mountains up close. They look nearby, but you’ll drive about an hour to get there. Once you do, you
Denver’s public transportation is killer – whether by bus, rail or light-rail. Plus, they drive really slow here compared to the ATL, so taking those options or letting someone else like Uber drive will relieve some of your “Go, dammit!” stress. Plane tickets are cheap, and so is Airbnb. Gay-popular accommodations include the Hotel Monaco, as well as the quirky-kitschy Curtis Hotel. If you do partake in the plant the state is suddenly most famous for, you might even spring for a stay in a “Bud & Breakfast.” Denver is a hot travel destination right now. Atlanta Gay Men’s Chorus just made a splash there during the national Gay And Lesbian Association of Choruses festival. So make plans to bring your Southern self out West to see if you can wrangle a few bucks of your own.

Bites of Westside Fabulous By Mike Fleming
Latest Barcelona Wine Bar location rounds out Howell Mill’s newest re-use project with the right tapas, sangria and patio to get the gays through the dog days – and beyond.
I
n case you’ve been living under a rock, the West Midtown revitalization that took a dip with the economy a few years ago is back at full stride. The fervor includes a flock of gay guys gathering in an old ironworks to claim it as the latest hot destination to eat, drink and Be Mary. But don’t go for that reason. Head over to Barcelona Wine Bar Westside Ironworks because the menu, the staff and the surroundings are fantastic. Not to mention, oh-so-very gay. A small group of gays headed over there on a recent weekend afternoon for one of the best Sunday Fundays I’ve had in a while. A few stragglers were still drifting out of the place after regular hours for the Food of Our People – brunch – officially ended, so we were able to snag a prime spot on Barcelona’s particularly fabulous garden-style patio. This summer’s sweltering heat, which had me glistening forth with inner beauty earlier in the day, was tempered by one of July’s typical afternoon confluence of clouds and thunder without any actual rain. Pitchers of perfectly portioned red and white sangrias, plus a flight of three wines for one couple, took care of the rest. A sister to the Barcelona Inman Park and cousin of Bartaco locations dotting the city, Westside brings its own flair to Atlanta’s dining landscape. It opened in April with the same devotion to great food that its parent company brings to

eateries here, in Connecticut, and in the Boston and Washington, D.C., areas. Before we get to the food, soak in the stellar location. Barcelona takes full advantage of the neighborhood’s latest adaptive redevelopment of its industrial past. It’s the last tenant in the Westside Ironworks building that really did once house an old metalworking factory. It joins O-Ku Sushi and Tom + Chee, as well as fashion retailer Villa Savannah, a Toni & Guy Salon, and design house Dixon Rye in a curated blend of businesses with an eye on high style.
Now about those tapas. Not one passed my lips that I didn’t care for. Priced from $6.50 to $13.50 each, the bill does stack up, but it’s worth it. Rotating options on our lucky day included spinach-chickpea cazuela, Scallops a la Plancha, meltin-your-mouth hangar steak, potato with aioli, Gambas al Ajillo (shrimp), goat cheese with mojo verde, and my favorite, spiced beef empanadas. Desserts are also served as small plates, so try several. As one who limits carbs and sugar for sport, I deemed this a special occasion in order to sample churros y chocolate, crepes, chocolate hazelnut indulgence, and panna cotta. Worth every panting second of extra cardio. Staying on the pulse of what’s hot and happening among the lads who lunch – and dinner, and brunch – has never been so delicious.
The décor at Barcelona uses midcentury modern twists to capitalize on the original structure’s industrial feel. Natural wood and slate combine with sleek metals and glass. Glass “garage” doors with views of the Midtown skyline create an open-air atmosphere that epitomizes and elevates Atlanta intown living. Executive Chef Benjamin Meyer heads a kitchen that seems to consistently crank out amazing food and an especially attentive staff. Remembering that we’re in a place named for the City of Dreams, I order an entrée portion from the Spanish paella menu to share. The seafood version is delicious, with generous chunks of prawns, clams, mussels and squid. Other options include chicken, vegetable, as well as a Southern iteration with crawfish, sausage, frogs legs and shrimp.

The Prom You Always Wanted By Jeffery Silvey
Gay Atlanta’s inner child gets a do-over as Alliance previews a Broadway-bound show about taking a same-sex date to high school’s biggest night.
I
n high school, almost everyone looks forward to prom. The pomp and circumstance is a symbol of the American teenage experience, but one until recently exclusive to heterosexuals. That’s where we enter The Prom, the new Broadway-bound musical staging at Alliance Theatre this month. How does a gay youth experience that vital American childhood phenomenon of prom with all its privileges and perks? The musical asks that question to tell the story of Emma, a teenager growing up in conservative Indiana who wants nothing more than to go to the prom with her girlfriend. Disapproving of her choice but unwilling to seem discriminatory, her school decides to cancel the prom for everyone. What ensues is an ample amount of press coverage and even more hilarious antics as four Broadway stars of yesteryear show up to save the day, as well as save the dance. The Prom becomes Broadway versus Board of Education, proving that all it takes is one person to stand up and speak out to spark a change.
After hosting the world premieres of Broadway-bound musicals including The Color Purple and Aida, the Alliance hosts the show by director-choreographer Casey Nicholaw, who won a Tony for The Book of Mormon. The show is based on an original idea by producer Jack Viertel, written by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin. Beguelin is also responsible for the lyrics, and Matthew Sklar the music.
20 AUGUST 2016 • V2 I6
The Prom stage is loaded with Tony Award winners and nominees as well as Broadway stage veterans, including lead Caitlin Kinnunen. Originally from a small town between Seattle and the Canadian border in Washington State, Kinnunen moved to New York City at 16 when she was cast in the Broadway musical Spring Awakening. Now 24, she is excited to be a part of the show, and the larger conversation it sparks. “It’s important to be who you are,” Kinnunen says of the show’s theme. “Love who you love and embrace that. Do not be afraid to show the world who you love and stand up for yourself.”
The cast and crew commitment to making things better is just one of the many reasons that Kinnunen is excited for the show. “I never went to high school,” the actress says. “I was homeschooled, so I never got to go to a prom, so I finally get to do that.” The larger conversation that The Prom presents attempts to bring all the giddy memories and experiences of the big event to every American teenager, regardless of who they want to take as their date, what they want to wear, or how they want to express their gender identity.
The show feels like a true story, but it’s more amalgamation of various headlines born out of real-life discrimination. In 2010, a gay teen in Cochran, Georgia was told he wasn’t allowed to bring a boy to the prom. The same year, a school in Mississippi canceled the prom to prevent a lesbian student from attending with her girlfriend. Earlier this year, a lesbian student was banned from her prom because she wanted to wear a tuxedo. The gay discrimination in heteronormative proms has become too common. In addition to the show itself, the Alliance, a longtime LGBT supporter, seeks to further address the issues. Back in July, they held a Q&A “Behind the Musical” with the show principles, and even threw a “Gay Prom” honoring all the people who didn’t get one in high school, who didn’t get to go with the date of their choice, or those who simply wish for a “do-over.”

Sources and supplies for Atlanta pet owners that respect your gay sense and sensibilities
A
s the Atlanta guys in this month’s dog-owner feature can attest, gay men wouldn’t trade our pets for the world. They’re our cuddle buddies, best friends and kids for life all rolled into one.
Grooming Start with a recommendation from a friend, veterinarian, boarding kennel, dog trainer, pet supply store or animal shelter.
That’s why we spare no expense on excellent vets, grooming, daycare, boarding and everything else it takes to keep them playing and snuggling for years to come.
Some groomers are registered by a grooming school or association. Check with your local Better Business Bureau for complaints. After narrowing your search, call and ask for current clients to interview.
The American Humane Society has tips for choosing the right resources for your needs and your lifestyle. Here are a few considerations to keep in mind.
Is the facility well-lit? Is it clean? Does the staff handle pets gently? Are cages the appropriate size? Are pets monitored regularly to prevent overheating during blow-drying?
Boarding Find out whether your state requires boarding kennel inspections. If it does, make sure the kennel you are considering displays a license or certificate showing that the kennel meets mandated standards. After selecting a few kennels, confirm that they can accommodate your pet for specific dates and can address your pet’s special needs, if any. If satisfied, schedule a visit.
Veterinarians The best way to find a good vet is to ask people who have the same approach to pet care as you. Start with a recommendation. If you’re looking for a specialist, ask about board certification. Schedule a visit to meet the staff, tour the facility and learn about the hospital’s philosophy and policies.
Does the facility look and smell clean? Is a comfortable temperature? Does the staff seem knowledgeable and caring? Are animals required to be current on vaccinations? Does each dog have his own indoor-outdoor run or an indoor run with a schedule for exercise? Are cats housed away from dogs? How often are pets fed? What veterinary services are available?
Is it clean, comfortable and well-organized? How many veterinarians are in the practice? Are there technicians on staff? Are dog and cats in separate areas? Is the staff calm, competent and courteous, and do they communicate effectively? Do the veterinarians have special interests such as geriatrics or behavior? Are X-rays, ultrasound, bloodwork, EKG, endoscopy, diagnostics and emergencies done in-house or referred to a specialist?

When it comes to lifetime commitments for these gay Atlanta guys, Mr. Right has nothing on canine companions. For better or worse, in sickness and in health. These words may bring to mind certain ceremonies, but they’re never truer than the unspoken vows gay guys make to our dogs. Think about it. Most gay dog owners you know have been through two or more boyfriends or husbands since they got their dog. With a few notable exceptions, pets outlast all other pretenders to our hearts. For richer or poorer, to have and to hold from this day forward, the five Atlanta guys featured in our Pets Issue show what lifelong love is really all about. EQUALITY RISING On a night that celebrates lawmakers, politicos and policy bigwigs in the fight for our rights statewide, Georgia Equality hosted a star-studded affair on June 18 at InterContinental Buckhead. That’s when hundreds of LGBT and allied Georgians gathered for the annual Evening for Equality. Amid the networking, cocktails and dinner, special awards went out to State Senator Harold Jones of Augusta, Maggie Garrett of Americans United for Separation of Church & State, Brian Tolleson of Bark Bark Media, and John Haupert of Grady Health System.

ALL IN WHITE Everybody looks good in white, almost as much as everyone loves a gay-inclusive charity. The combination makes for a sizzling summer night each year at White Party with CHRIS Kids. The statewide organization for underprivileged kids threw this year’s fete benefiting its LGBT programs at Mason Fine Art on June 18. Games, performers and a silent auction peppered the crowd with awesomeness.

PRIDE PEOPLE You can’t have a parade without somebody awesome leading the pack. Well, Atlanta Pride figured out years ago that when it comes to people waving from convertibles, the more the merrier. The committee hosted all 12 of the individuals and organizations making up the 2016 Pride Parade contingent on June 28. The grand marshal reception honored Anne Barr, Simone Bell, Cheryl Courtney-Evans, David Hayward, For the Kid in All of Us, Leo Martinez, Out on Film, PFLAG Atlanta, Estrella Sanchez, Anneliese Singh, Southerners On New Ground and Solutions Not Punishment Coalition.

G O LIATH
WELL HELLO.
IT’S DEVEN GREEN DEVEN GREEN is an award-winning comedy performer. You know her from the “Welcome To My Home” parodies, as the satirical Betty Bowers – America’s Best Christian, OCCmakeup ads, “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” World of Wonder, and performing her live music shows in brothels across America. DevenGreen.com Dear Deven: I want to hint at moving in together. How can I guarantee he will say “YES!”? -Full House Try over-reaching. If you say you want to get married, then his response will be, “Maybe we should live together first.” Or just let him know that you have made a copy of his house key and the moving truck will be there Saturday. Dear Deven: My friend buys me thoughtful, expensive gifts all the time. I hate feeling obligated to buy him things. -American Gigolo Sometimes the gift is more for the person giving it than the person receiving it. Just make sure he is not using it for leverage down the road. If you hear the words “you OWE ME nothing,” you will indeed owe him something. Dear Deven: I’m so lazy about dating. It’s so much work. What is the easiest way to date? -Reality Bites Lay on your back. I’m sure someone will climb aboard. If you wish to place the onus of responsibility onto that of your friends via a blind date, you will have to swallow your pride and pretend not to be mortified at their choice of a “he’s got such a great personality.” Dear Deven: I’m not sure if I should date this new guy. He’s really awesome, but he has been divorced twice, once from a woman and once from a man. -Wild Thing Re-read your question carefully. He just told you exactly who he was. Dear Deven: My siblings have left me in charge of my ailing mother because I am gay. I’m so tired. What’s the best way to deal with this? -Family Ties They didn’t place this on you because you are gay. They placed it on you because you are a responsible, willing, good brother. Ask them for specific help such as everyone chipping in financially to get a home-care worker once a week to relieve you. Your mom raised a good son. Dear Deven: Here it is. Okay. I looked through my husband’s phone – he wasn’t cheating. I feel awful and am ashamed. -To Wong Number You found out exactly what you already knew. Your husband is a good man, and you are insecure. Dear Deven: I expect a lot from a partner: Commitment, honesty, integrity, diligence, etc. I have never found it in someone else. -Great Expectations You are looking for a prepackaged entity instead of enjoying the qualities that someone else has and building a partnership together from that. You can be a perfectionist with yourself, but give others some latitude.

Dear Deven: I’m in a relationship, and I feel lonely. -Waiting To Exhale

Being with someone else doesn’t eradicate loneliness. They cannot heal or entertain you. Relationships should strengthen you to be a stronger person when you are alone. That void is only filled by you – and by me right now saying, “You are never alone.” Dear Friends: This column is for entertainment purposes...mostly mine. Send me your questions: DevenGreen@gmail.com PS: Would you like me to read this to you? Go to GoliathAtlanta.com and listen!
