a note

FROM THE EDITOR . STEPHANIE TROMBLEY

Goodbye summer! It’s a bittersweet sayonara. The sun sets just a tad sooner, it’s our last chance to flaunt sundresses and shorts, and we wave goodbye to the warm beaches. Not to mention, it’s the last hoorah before school begins once more. What makes it personally bittersweet for me is that Halloween decorations start pouring into stores, pumpkin spice trickles its way into every food and drink, and I love school supplies. But I will save my joy in those concepts for next month, and let our readers enjoy another month of summer. We have survived the heat wave of July, and just in time to bask in those last-minute summer activities. This month, we met up with the MOMS Club of Longmeadow in preparation for their 3rd Annual Almost Mile Family Fun Run and 5k. We celebrate local history and talk cold treats thanks to the East Windsor 250th Anniversary Committee and their upcoming Ice Cream Social. We take a look at the upcoming events, fun with farm animals and activities at the annual 4H Fair in Somers. We are blown away by the artwork of Ryan D. Jacque. The great people featured in this issue are helping us ease into the end of the summer with fun, food and fantastic artwork. I can easily tie each feature this month to my own personal life. Meeting with the MOMS Club of Longmeadow reminded me of the kindness and love of my own mother, and her willingness to always open her heart to not only my sister and I, but the other children in her life. Whether it was making dozens of chocolate lollipops to hand out or helping children in the lunch room at Springfield Public Schools, she always played the part of super mom to all of the local children of my hometown. The pride that the East Windsor 250th Commitee takes in their town is astonishing. Their attention to the history of their hometown and the care they have taken in conducting an Ice Cream Social brings me back to my childhood, basking in the rich history of Springfield including Dr. Seuss and the annual pancake breakfast. It’s evident they have just as much love for their city as I do for my own. Ryan D. Jacque and his passion for art reminds me of my personal love for writing. The level of detail and attention that Ryan puts into his works is unmatched, and I only hope to grow my career as much as he has. Hearing his story this month was truly inspiring. While it’s never easy to say goodbye to the summer, let’s not send it off just yet. Stay up a little later, bathe in the sun and don’t be too quick to pack those flip flops away. Summer events are aplenty in Connecticut and Massachusetts this month, and I’d highly suggest enjoying them before stressing about back-to-school shopping and cold temperatures.

! RECIPE SUBMITTED BY BETH M. THURBER

Summer Farro Salad Farro adds a hearty texture to this salad, which makes a nice summer dinner, packable lunch or picnic side dish. This recipe gets kicked up a notch with the addition of red pepper flakes!

4 cups of water 10 ounces farro (about 1/2 cup) 1 pound tomatoes, seeded & chopped 1 seedless cucumber, chopped 1/2 sweet onion, (Walla Walla) chopped 2 tbsp. crushed red pepper flakes 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh parsley

Combine the water and farro in a medium saucepan. Add 1 teaspoon of salt. Bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover and simmer until the farro is tender, about 30 minutes. Drain well and then transfer to a bowl to cool. Add the tomatoes, cucumbers, onion and parsley to the farro, and toss to combine. In a medium bowl, whisk together the garlic, vinegar, pepper and olive oil. Add the vinaigrette to the salad and toss to coat. Salt to taste. The salad can be refrigerated overnight. Serve at room temperature. Top with fresh Parmesan cheese.

3 tbsp. balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 large garlic clove, minced

READY, SET, RUN ! STEPHANIE TROMBLEY

P

arenting and moving to a new place are two life-changing experiences that can be as daunting as they are enjoyable. Often, it’s best to have a helping hand to bring joy to these amazing changes. The MOMS Club of Longmeadow, a local nonprofit organization, is a great place to start. After speaking with just a few of the mothers involved with MOMS Club, it is evident that these moms love being a part of their group. In a backyard full of joyful children and laughter, the moms enjoyed some leisure time before their big event next month. Jenn Klatte (AVP), Katie Newton (former president), Jamie Walker (former AVP) and Sarah Shube (current president), all represent just how fun and rewarding it can truly be to be a parent. The 3rd Annual MOMS Club Fun Run and 5k is fast approaching, and the moms could not be more excited. On Saturday, August 25, the club will host the Almost Mile Family Fun Run and 5k in partnership with Fleet Feet at the Longmeadow Town Green Park, and it’s sure to be a great time. The almost mile run is

 TYLER WHALEY, LEO PILARES

around the Longmeadow Town Green. Being a shorter run, this is kid-friendly. Parents are welcome to participate in the 5k to follow. The run around the Longmeadow Town Green begins at 9am, followed by the 5k. A festival follows shortly afterward with prizes & fun activities for all. Last year, the event raised over $3,000 to benefit Storrs Library in Longmeadow. The MOMS Club hopes to exceed that donation this year. Proceeds will be donated to the library this year as well. As former president Katie Newton shared, “The race’s biggest purpose is to help with the children’s programming at the library. It’s something that we use a lot as moms. It’s a huge resource for us.” Numerous businesses have offered their support for the race, including My Gym, Kiddly Winks, The Kitchen, Bay Path University, Restoration Games, Mario’s Barber Shop, the Longmeadow Montessori Internationale, and more. Boomer, the Springfield Thunderbirds mascot, will make an appearance along with the Balise Car Wash mascot, Squeaky. The Longmeadow Police Department is being represented with a GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 17 33

visit from Officer Amanda Van Buskirk and her K9 companion, Kai. To help everyone get ready for the run, Fit4Mom’s Meaghan Perry will be conducting a warm-up. Sarah Shube, current president, stated, “A lot of the Longmeadow community has come together for this race. It’s a great couple of races. We’re very excited.” The MOMs Club of Longmeadow is Longmeadow, Massachusetts’s own chapter of MOMS (Mothers Offering Mothers Support) Club International. Around the nation, moms from various towns gather to make friends, build a community and support charity. MOMS Club used to be exclusively for stay-at-home moms in need of support. However, as time has gone by, it was realized that working moms need just as much support. Now, all mothers are welcome to join the warm and caring group. Originally, the MOMs Club was a part of the Greater Springfield Chapter. It was only six years ago that the club became its own individual chapter. While the chapters may change, one thing has not, and that is the group’s ability to leave a positive footprint on their town. A majority of the activities held by the MOMs Club of Longmeadow are based on service projects. While the MOMS Club Almost Mile Family Fun Run and 5k is focused mainly on donating to the Storrs Library, the club has given back to a number of organizations over the years. For example, during their Mother’s Day brunch, the MOMs club collected canned food donations. They have also collected purses for the CHD Grace House, a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in Northampton, Massachusetts. Katie Newton proudly explained, “Service is a must when you are a national organization and that is something we have taken seriously. Our AVPs are focused on the service projects and we always have something ongoing, whether we are giving suggestions on how to help the community or directly working to donate to it. We’ve made Valentines for the senior citizens, collected Halloween candy, and built Veterans Day packages.” While donating to charity and helping the community is a large part of the work of MOMS Club of Longmeadow, the group is also strongly focused on supporting one another. Most of the MOMs Club members have moved to town from other places, but they have proven anyone is welcome as part of their community. As Jenn Klatte said, “My family moved here almost five years ago now and that’s the first thing I looked for was a MOMS club and a library. I knew those were great places to be.” Katie agreed, “So many of us are from other places and this was the way for us to connect.” All of the moms agreed: Having each other in times of need is both important and valuable. When a new mom has a question, she can always count on her group to have the answers. Even if the moms fall on hard times, they can depend on one another for assistance. Whether it’s starting a meal train 18 GO LOCAL AUGUST 2018

or lending a listening ear, genuine friendships are built within the MOMS Club of Longmeadow. As Jenn stated, “When I first moved to Longmeadow, I was afraid to make friends, but MOMS Club is really approachable. The friends you make are nice people, and I have never heard anyone talking ill of anyone else.” The MOMS Club of Longmeadow also holds inter-club events for both members and their children. Some of these events include playgroups, seasonal celebrations, a monthly Ladies’ Lunch, group outings, Lego club, and family picnics. There are also evenings just for moms, for those times when they need a break. These include a book club and a Mom’s Night Out. Does MOMS Club of Longmeadow sound right up your alley?

The group is always welcoming new members. Katie stated, “Every year we get an influx of younger kids and then the older ones start to phase out. It’s necessary to have that next generation of moms to come in and take things over and keep it going.” And don’t worry, dads, a dad’s club is currently in the works! screams for ice cream!

East Windsor ! STEPHANIE TROMBLEY

 L EO PILARES

T

hanks to the numerous residents and volunteers in East Windsor, this summer has been filled with fun events in the Connecticut town. From the Farm, Garden and House Tour to the Revolutionary War Reenactment and Food Truck Fest, the love and care of many in the town has made it possible for all surrounding towns to respect the rich history of East Windsor. Adding to this fun is the upcoming Historical Society Ice Cream Social on August 11 from 12-4pm at the Museums on the Green. Ice cream is just the thing to help you cool off when the mid- August sun is shining. This year, the East Windsor Historical Society is celebrating their newly acquired 40 acres of land, which currently holds three barns. The land follows directly to the Scantic River and includes frontage on Cemetery Road. While there are no set-in-stone plans for the land yet, it is certain that the East Windsor Historical Society will make great use of it. The event is free and open to the public, making it a great time for parents and kids. Not a resident of East Windsor? No problem! All are welcome to enjoy the festivities and appreciate the culture of the 250-year-old town. Tulmeadow Farm, a shop in West Simsbury, Connecticut, will be providing free ice cream to visitors of the event. As if an ice cold treat weren’t enough, the day is packed with lots of games and entertainment. GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 23

There will be activities to appeal to all ages, including pony rides for kids, tractor and small engine displays by the Scantic Valley Antique Engine Club, wagon rides and free haircuts in the Broad Brook Barber Shop Museum. Visitors are welcome to take “selfies” with family and friends in vintage hats and props, a memorable keepsake of the event thanks to the Suffield Players. Take a step into a time machine and tune out of your technology to play Colonial games like Whirligig and Game of Graces. While visitors may be aware of the five existing museums on the property (Broad Brook Barber Shop Museum, East Windsor Academy Museum, East Windsor Probate Court Museum, Osborn House Museum and the Farm Tool Museum), there will be redesigned exhibits to enjoy. This includes a newly designed military exhibit. Spectators can sneak a peek at the ongoing progress being made on the Barber Hill School House Museum, which has recently made its way from Barber Hill onto the property. Where there was just a sign showing its future home last year, the structure now proudly stands as a work in progress. Come take a look at what is soon to become a part of the coveted East Windsor Historical Society Museum family. For music fans, there will be no shortage of entertainment. The North Street Barber Shop Quartet will be on site performing. The Scantic Valley Antique Engine Club will also be bringing one of the finest early examples of an engine, “Katie-Sue,” a 1905 band organ originating from the Black Forest of Germany. Owned by Peter and Jill Hallock, the sounds emitted from the organ will bring smiles to all ages, transporting everyone to the nostalgic sound of a classic merry-go-round. The mechanical pieces that make up the organ will be exposed, making the instrument as educational as it is merriful. “Katie-Sue” can play marches, waltzes, two steps and fox trots. While the day may be special and memorable for all guests, two guests are certain to never forget it. A marriage ceremony 24 GO LOCAL AUGUST 2018

will be happening during the event on the steps of the historic East Windsor Probate Court Museum. The Historical Society offered the wedding entirely for free, and one lucky couple happily obliged. The whole town is invited to be a guest and cheer on the bride and groom! In the Osborn House Museum, there will be a book signing for the newly published, Pierre Starr Surgeon, 39th Ohio Infantry, transcribed and researched by Brad Quinlin and his son Jason Rusk. Brad Quinlin, who has authored 22 Civil War books, will be joined by Bob Starr for the signing. Bob Starr is the great grandson of Pierre Starr. He found items of Pierre’s including artifacts, letters and journals in the attic of his home on Main Street in South Windsor over 50 years ago. A letter from Gideon Wells, Secretary of the Navy, Pierre’s name plate, inventories of his dispensary and more will be on display for public viewing. A number of booths, exhibits and demonstrations will also be featured on the museum grounds during the event, including a booth from the East Windsor 250 Anniversary Committee. They will be selling merchandise and promoting their final events including Heritage Day on September 22 and Bury the 250 Time Capsule on September 23. The Ice Cream Social also marks the start of a display of the items that were in the Bicentennial Time Capsule opened on May 19. Several surrounding historical societies have also been invited to have their own booths at the event, including South Windsor and Enfield. Ice cream won’t be the only cuisine offered for patron’s enjoyment. A hot dog truck will also be on site providing a delicious, classic American snack. Guests are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunch, but the East Windsor Historical Society stresses that the event filled up quickly last year, and space could be a bit limited. Guests are strongly encouraged to show up in costume, so if you’re planning to attend, start planning the perfect historical period costume now! It will only add to the endless fun at the Ice Cream Social. If you’re interested in being a part of the East Windsor Historical Society, members-to-be are welcome to sign up during the event. For nature admirers, the East Windsor Historical Society is welcoming newly planted pollinator gardens at the event as well. Julie Pratt, master gardener, will be at the site explaining the types of plants and the importance of insects and birds in pollination and the food chain. Mark your calendars, find your best costume and get your favorite spoon ready for when the Museums on the Green transform into an all-out historical ice cream party! There’s something for everyone at the East Windsor Historical Society’s Annual Ice Cream Social. While ice cream is always enough to make for a lively event, the several attractions offered by the Historical Society will sprinkle the day with laughs, smiles and endless fun. FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE EAST WINDSOR HISTORICAL SOCIETY AND TO KEEP UP WITH UPCOMING EVENTS, VISIT THEM AT WWW.EASTWINDSORHISTORY.WORDPRESS.COM THE EAST WINDSOR HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S ANNUAL ICE CREAM SOCIAL WILL BE HELD AT 115 SCANTIC ROAD, EAST WINDSOR, CT

bringing out the beauty in nature

! STEPHANIE TROMBLEY  CONTRIBUTED PHOTOS BY RYAN JACQUE

H

ave you ever heard the phrase “Some people are just born with it”? It seems unlikely to be born with an incredible talent, but for Ryan Jacque, it’s absolutely true. Ryan Jacque, a Western Massachusetts artist, remembers drawing from as young as the age of five. While coloring with crayons could be seen as a leisure activity to most kids, Ryan’s early hobby followed him from high school, all the way to college. Now at the age of 46, Jacque continues to create unique, award-winning works of art. What can be found in his portfolio is a collection of stunning, nature themed art pieces and portraits of anything from New England to beloved pets. The meticulous detail and care taken in each piece is evident to anyone lucky enough to be viewing his work. After suffering a setback following a near-fatal outdoor accident in 2008, Ryan has left the past behind, continuing to create astonishing pieces. Ryan practiced his artwork nights and weekends while working in roofing and carpentry for 13 years following his time spent GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 29

in college. It was in September of 1998 that his work began to gain more recognition. Ryan shared, “I was accepted into Leigh Yawkey Woodson’s Birds in Art in Wausau, Wisconsin. It is a juried art exhibit focusing only on birds. Since then, I’ve been accepted 12 times as of this coming September. I could talk all day about what that exhibit means to me, what it has done for me and so many artists and bird enthusiasts around the world.” Ryan has enjoyed being a part of the Yawkey Woodson’s Birds in Art show so much, he calls it his favorite accomplishment, and with good reason. “My wife and I went to the opening weekend of the show and met many artists who I had looked up to for years. It was also the first time I had met one of the museum’s Master Artists, Robert Bateman, who I’m proud to call a friend now.” That meeting led to the creation of a portrait Ryan completed of Bateman that can now be found in the Robert Bateman Centre in Canada and on the back of the 2014 Bateman calendar cover. He glowed, “There are no words to describe what that felt like.” The work of Ryan Jacque is exceptional, and that takes the right supplies and a great deal of time. “My work is pencil on hot press watercolor paper. I always use a needle sharp tip so it’s not ex30 GO GOLOCAL LOCAL AUGUST 2018

actly fast, but it is the way I enjoy working on it. I choose heavier paper because I never know how long an original might actually take, could be planned on 20 hours and ending at 100 or more.” While Ryan often creates art from his own inspiration, he happily accepts commissioned projects from time to time. “Commissions are what I really enjoy doing for several reasons. My overall goal is to take a customer’s idea and make it look better than they thought or expected.” He prefers to meet and photograph the subject of which he will be drawing (which he shared is most frequently a person, dog or horse.) “I prefer this way because I know they will not have seen it before and it’s completely original.” However, some of his commissioned work is done with a reference photograph from a customer because of barriers such as distance or that the subject has passed away. As Ryan expressed, “All I can do is the best I can do, and if they are happy with the end result, I’m happy.” Artists often choose their favorite works not for their visual outcome, but for the meanings behind them. The same can be said of Ryan, who shared that many of his pieces are sentimental for their personal stories. Among these favorites is his work,

“November Sky.” “I’ve written more about this drawing than anything else I’ve done because the location, subject and that time in my life is always on my mind, even now. In fact, I’ve thought a lot more about the location and the subject than the drawing itself. This particular buck and the ridge he stands on is what first got me into the outdoors, deer, wildlife, bird watching and hunting. Whether that’s good or bad news to share, that’s the most honest thing I could say about it.” Coupled with the joy of creating artwork, one benefit of being an artist for Ryan is how many fantastic artists he has come to meet over the years. He values their ability to have work that shows who the artist is without featuring a signature. “That is what I look for in my work. If the theme or idea of the work has been done, I generally lose interest in even starting it, even if it is a very popular theme. My feeling is that I’d like to be excited to get to the drawing and have that same feeling every single time. Or what is the point of going to the studio?” With every piece Jacque has created, it’s evident that he looks at each piece from a unique and personalized perspective every time. His resume is as expansive as it is impressive. Just to include a few accomplishments, Ryan’s original work “End of Summer” was featured in the September/October issue of Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine. He is also the two time recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant. In 2013, he received the Special Merit Award from LightSpaceTime’s 2013 Figurative Art Exhibition. His original works entitled “Autumn Chill,” “End of Summer,” and “Stoned In” were purchased by Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum for its permanent collection. His resume is found on his webpage and is ever growing. With such an impressive portfolio of work, where will Ryan go next? He has a bright itinerary planned for the coming years. His main plan? Bigger and better. “The goal is to bring my camera and pad to Wyoming, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado (generally Central US) or anywhere bison, elk, mule deer, pronghorn, wolves, grizzly/brown bears can be seen over the next ten years. I’ll be more than excited if that can happen someday. If I make one trip in the country, it will be Wyoming.” No matter where on the map life brings Ryan D. Jacque, he knows where his goals are. “I’d like to keep producing the best work I can make or the best that the given time allows.” FOR MORE INFORMATION ON THE WORK OF RYAN D. JACQUE AND TO LEARN MORE ABOUT COMMISSIONS, PLEASE VISIT HIS WEBSITE AT WWW.RYANJACQUE.COM
