FROM THE EXECUTIVE EDITOR . PAYTON NORTH

Where do you find comfort?

Curling up by a fire with a good book? Taking a beat to enjoy a mug of creamy hot chocolate with a fluffy marshmallow – or perhaps an adult beverage? Maybe you find comfort snuggling under a fuzzy blanket watching a movie after a long day. What about enjoying homemade chicken noodle soup on a chilly evening?

For me – I find comfort in Novembers and Decembers. Why?

These months welcome my favorite time of year: the holiday season.

Before the carved pumpkins are rotten, I’m already pulling out my fireplace mantle garland, stockings and window candle lights.

I find an inexplicable amount of joy in the holidays.

Driving past countless homes adorned with classic – and sometimes kooky – decorations: that’s where I find comfort. I drove down the locally famous Greenleaf Drive in Hampden at least six times last holiday season, each time with more anticipation than the last, to view the classic cut-out figures that begin with a life-size, hand-crafted wooden Santa who holds a sign welcoming passersby to the street.

Baking the North family cookie favorites – peanut butter buckeyes and Russian tea cookies – with my mom and one of my best friends: that’s where I find comfort.

Blaring every Christmas station known to existence from November through December, letting the cheerful, hopeful tunes lift my spirits: that’s where I find comfort.

Watching as many cheesy, holiday-themed romantic comedies as I can – despite them all having virtually the same plot: that’s where I find comfort.

Heck – I even find comfort in cleaning our house top to bottom in preparation for a good party.

Where I find the most comfort, though, is being surrounded by my family and close friends while enjoying a delicious meal, good drinks and their company.

Storrowton Tavern, featured in this month’s Go Local, knows all about the comfort a good meal can bring. Throughout its 60-plus years of business, Storrowton has brought various versions of comfort foods and comforting activities – one of which, is their upcoming Yuletide Festival, which takes place annually and is a tradition to many.

Peak holiday comfort, in my opinion, revolves heavily around scent. I have a sugared snickerdoodle candle in my kitchen – for when I don’t have time to bake the snickerdoodles but want to smell the gooey, sugary goodness – and evergreen candles in the rest of my home. Local business owners Dee and Ray Gore began their candle company, Wilbraham Candle, after they struggled to find a clean-burning candle with a strong scent. I personally purchased one of their candles as a gift last year and received rave reviews on the fragrance.

But when I do have time to spare in the kitchen, you’ll find me baking not only the North family classic cookies I mentioned, but other goodies as well. Baking is a science – and I thrive in this medium, as I’m someone who finds comfort in how precise the art of baking is. Mercedes Delano, owner of Connecticut’s Bake, Craft and Create, appreciates not only the art of baking – but art in general. Her business focuses on classes that allow participants to enjoy crafting and creating a sweet treat.

And what would the holiday season be without offering your loved one the perfect gift? While I’m not one to get caught up in the consumerism side of Christmas – I do enjoy giving a thoughtful gift. Brian and Monica Rushby, owners of East Longmeadow’s RedFive Toys and Collectibles, promise a shopping experience reminiscent of childhood memories. Focusing on toys that go back to what they grew up playing with in the ‘80s, RedFive offers gifts that will delight both young and old.

Though this can be a stressful time of year between obligations to attend various gatherings, perhaps spending more money than usual on gifts for others or preparing a feast for many mouths – I hope you are able to find your comfort – whatever that may look like.

I wish you and yours a beautiful holiday season.

Cheers, Payton North, Executive Editor

STORROWTON VILLAGE'S winter wonderland

Yuletide at Storrowton Village Museum, a department of the Eastern States Exposition is preparing this December to bring the community together to celebrate the season with traditional Yuletide activities, entertainment, horse-drawn carriage rides and shopping in the Village.

The festivities begin on Dec. 3-4 with the Yuletide Festival, a free weekend of beautifully decorated buildings, entertainment, farm animals, kids’ activities and visits with Mr. and Mrs. Claus from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Next is the Yuletide Open House Tours on Dec. 6-10. Admission is $8 per person and free for children 6 and under. Interested participants can reserve your tour time ahead or drop in on the hour from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Then on Dec. 7 there will be the Yuletide Lantern Light Evening, and on Dec. 9 at 6 p.m., the Spirits of Christmas Past, uncovering the history of Christmas ghost stories.

The Yuletide Festival has been going on for over 40 years. It was started by June Cook, the first full-time director of the Village in the ‘70s and ‘80s, with the premise of focusing on what the holiday season looked like in New England in the mid-19th century.

The word “Yuletide” comes from the Norse name for the turning time of the sun, Hweolor-tid, or the winter solstice. The

GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 11
! MIASHA LEE NATE BLAIS & SUBMITTED

term was used to describe that time of the calendar around the winter solstice. During that time, the ancients rejoiced because the sun had triumphed, and days began to grow longer. Over hundreds of years honoring the change of season has evolved into what is now known as a traditional holiday celebration.

Jessica K. Fontaine, director of Storrowton Village Museum said, "Our goal for any event is to make the 19th century relevant in the 21st century, so we are always finding fun and creative ways to bring history and traditions to our 21st century audience in a way that is engaging, entertaining and educational."

Yuletide has become an important family event for many of their visitors who share with them they are in attendance to kick off their holiday season and fulfill the tradition among generations of their families.

"It is truly a beautiful event that could not happen without the generous donation of time, creativity and materials from the local garden clubs, florists, and private designers who decorate each of our museum spaces," Fontaine replied. "We take great pride in our ability to put on events that welcome in all members of our community to be a part of the holiday magic in the Village."

Located at 1305 Memorial Ave., the Storrowton Village Museum is a reconstructed village of nine authentic 18th and 19th century buildings from Massachusetts and New Hampshire, assembled around a traditional town green. The buildings were moved to West Springfield between 1927 to 1930. Originally

called the Old New England Village in 1930, it was officially named Storrowton Village Museum in honor of founder and donor Helen Osborne Storrow who was an active trustee of the Eastern States Exposition and chairwoman of the Home Department. Her dream was to move the handicraft exhibit to an actual home on site, a building with its own kitchen.

All the buildings were originally a part of the museum; however, a functional restaurant was always a part of Helen Storrow’s vision. The Storrowton Tavern is a landmark restaurant located on the grounds of the Eastern States Exposition and part of the historic Storrowton Village serving New England and continental cuisine. The main facility features five different dining rooms for banquets, weddings and other special occasions. Across the Storrowton Green is the Carriage House, a modern banquet facility with a covered patio, ample parking, two full bars, chandeliers, on-site wedding options and a private bridal suite. Originally the Potter Mansion included a Tavern area. In the 1950s, Storrowton Tavern was established and has been operated by a number of different families throughout its 60-plus year history.

The Calvanese family have been running the restaurant for 19 years. Prior to that, they ran the Suffield Country Club in Suffield, CT for 17 years. Owner/chef Vinnie Calvanese recalled, "When we first got here, we took the big four off of the original menu: baked Boston scrod, homemade chicken pot pie, roast turkey with herb stuffing and Yankee pot roast which

are our biggest sellers."

They explained they want to continue serving the public with a gracious staff and keep the connections they've made. Though it was tough getting through COVID-19, the Storrowton Tavern was able to stay in business because of their loyal followers. On Dec. 17, the Tavern will have lunch with Santa from 12- 2 p.m.

"I believe the history of the Village and this restaurant is the thing that keeps patrons coming back," Calvanese stated. "People talk about how they got married in this building, how they like the food and the service. Everyone has stories that are special to them, so there's a lot of history here and we've just become a part of it for the last 19 years."

The Storrowton Tavern is open Wednesday and Thursday with lunch from 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. and dinner 4 p.m.- 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday with lunch 11 a.m.- 4 p.m. and dinner 4 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., and Sunday brunch at 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. and dinner from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Visit their website at www.Storrowton.com to view their menus. WilbrahamCandle

Deana “Dee” Gore is a self-proclaimed “avid candle lover.”

“We have no less than three candles burning at all times in our house,” said the owner of Wilbraham Candle.

Gore began her quest to find a superior, cleanburning candle after a routine house cleaning.

“The inspiration to start making candles started after cleaning one day,” she said. “I have asthma and I saw the soot I was repeatedly cleaning from the walls and surfaces of our home when we were burning other candle brands. I wanted to find a candle that smelled amazing, didn’t leave soot and went well with our decor.”

Gore and her husband Ray set out on a mission, but came up empty-handed.

“After struggling to find that dream candle, my husband and I ventured into candle making,” Gore said. “The first try was a complete fail. We gave up on the dream. A year or so later, we still found ourselves searching for that perfect candle. We set out again on the candle making adventure.”

The Gores went through years of trial and error.

GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 17 !HOPE E. TREMBLAY NATE BLAIS & SUBMITTED

“We researched, experimented and tested over and over again for several years before we created the successful combination resulting in the quality candle product we wanted to bring to market,” Gore said. “We officially launched Wilbraham Candle in 2016.”

When Gore says Wilbraham Candles are homemade, she really means it.

“We make the candles in our home in Wilbraham,” she said. “We started in the kitchen and have since converted a portion of our basement into a candle making workshop.”

The inspiration for a candle can come from anywhere, and everywhere, Gore said.

“We pride ourselves on developing authentic, true to life scents,” she said. “We will never introduce a scent that we would not burn ourselves in our own home. Many of the bakery scents were inspired by actual recipes I’ve tried. Other scents were developed from customer suggestions. We are always open to trying new combinations and enjoy creating unique, original fragrances that are exclusive to Wilbraham Candle.”

The candle names are inspired by Wilbraham history, including Wilbraham Candle’s flagship scent “1763 House” which represents the year Wilbraham was incorporated. Wilbraham is known for its peaches and apples, which inspired Gore to create “Wilbraham Peach” and “Apple Orchard.”

“We believe the aroma of apples, peaches, cloves and spices is reminiscent of what a Wilbraham home of that era may have smelled like,” she said of “1763 House.”

Gore said much like home décor and fashion, candles have trends. However, she doesn’t pay much attention to that and instead focuses on the classics.

“We have found scents are truly very personal,” she said. “We try not to follow trends as they are fleeting. We try to offer something for everyone. Each season we feature

18 GO LOCAL DECEMBER 2022

a collection of curated fragrances that touch on each of the different scent types capturing the essence of that season. Whether it’s spring, summer, fall or winter. These collections are only available for a limited time and once they sell out, they are not available until the next year.”

Wilbraham Candles come in simple, classic clear jars labeled with the name in black. Keeping the aesthetic as clean as the candles is one reason the company is successful and recognizable.

Wilbraham Candle also has a variety of scents that Gore considers “everyday” fragrances that are available all year. From bakery to woodsy and everything in between, there is a scent for everyone.

Gore said candle lovers have already begun shopping for the holidays.

“This holiday season, our pine-based scents have been increasingly popular,” said Gore. “We also have two brandnew scents – Nutcracker, which is a sweet combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, spices and vanilla; and Yuletide, a mix of orange, clove, cranberry and spice.”

Other favorite fragrances include Pumpkin Gingerbread, Fireplace, New England Maple Butter and Massachusetts, among others.

Wilbraham Candle does not have a storefront but can be found at pop up events this month, including at The Wilbraham Olde Meeting House Dec. 4 and 11, Wilbraham United Church Dec. 10, the Eastfield Mall Dec. 24, and others. The full list of pop-ups is available at wilbrahamcandle.com. Candles can also be ordered on the site.

In addition to candles, Wilbraham Candle offers flameless fragrance products including wax melts, room sprays and hanging air fresheners.

REDFIVE TOYS AND COLLECTIBLES

Toys are not just for children. Just ask Brian and Monica Rushby, owners of RedFive Toys and Collectibles in East Longmeadow.

The couple opened their shop at 55 Maple St. in 2021 and created a shop filled with nostalgia.

“We wanted to open a store that harkened back to toy stores of the ‘80s where kids could come in and be amazed – and overwhelmed – by all the toys of their favorite movies and TV shows,” said Brian. “Plus give ‘big kids’ a chance to reunite with the toys of their youth.”

The Rushbys are children of the ‘80s and they stocked the store with childhood memories.

“We chose to focus on toys that related back to what we grew up with in the 1980's,” Brian said, “Star Wars, GI Joe, Masters of the Universe, Transformers, Barbie, LEGO, etc … As toy store owners, we too like to revisit the brands and toys that were important to us as kids. What's better than reliving your childhood

every day at work?”

Even the store name is a throwback to Brian’s love of Star Wars: “RedFive” is the call sign of Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars: A New Hope.”

For Brian, Star Wars and GI Joe action figures were the preferred toys of his youth.

“I was a huge action figure kid,” he said. “I can still remember the feeling I would get going into a toy store and seeing pegs and pegs of the action figures I wanted. It was such a magical feeling. The great thing is that we get to see this play out every day with our younger customers.”

Opening a store during a pandemic was risky, but it paid off for the Rushbys.

“COVID[-19] definitely helped families reunite with the idea of Family Game Nights,” said Brian. “Actually, COVID[-19] also forced people to stay inside which resulted in more time watching TV and movies which really helped fuel the toy and collectibles boom of late. I would definitely say that we have a larger ‘big kid’ clientele. People are really enjoying getting back into the collectible game, I think it brings out the inner child in all of us!”

RedFive Toys is ready for the holidays with a wide variety of collectibles, toys and games for all ages. Brian said there are some trends for the season.

“This year we expect LEGO and Pokémon to be

huge,” he said. “We are encouraging people to shop early, before the crowds really kick in. We also expect to see big things from Loungefly, which is a brand of pop culture themed mini backpacks. We are one of the largest dealers in Western Massachusetts and we are locked and loaded for the holiday season.”

RedFive has holiday hours for the month of December and will be open seven days a week instead of their usual six. And starting on Dec. 12, hours will be expanded to 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. MondaySaturday and 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. on Sundays.

“We can ship your purchases for you, or you can shop from home and choose our ‘Buy Online, Pick Up In Store’ feature and we will have your package ready for pick up whenever you are,” noted Brian.

Apple and Brown Sugar Hand Pies

FOR THE CRUST:

4 cups of all-purpose flour

1 cup of unsalted butter

1 tablespoon of sugar

1 teaspoon of salt

1 large egg

2 tablespoons of milk

FOR THE FILLING:

*apple filling*

1 or 2 apples (diced)

1 tablespoon of butter

1 tablespoon of brown sugar

1 teaspoon of cinnamon

*brown sugar filling*

1/3 cup of brown sugar

4 tablespoons of flour

1 teaspoon of cinnamon

DIRECTIONS FOR DOUGH:

Whisk together your flour, salt, and sugar then start to combine your butter slowly and mix with your hands, you can cube your butter beforehand to make this step easier. Once that’s combined, add your milk and your egg and mix together until dough is formed. Once dough is formed separate into two balls and wrap them in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours/for up to 2 days. Let dough come to room temp before rolling and cutting into equal rectangles. Combine your filling ingredients and add to one half of your dough rectangle and cover with another, press sides down with a fork, brush on an egg wash and bake at 350F for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Enjoy!

BAKE, CRAFT & CREATE

Mercedes Delano credits her high school home economics class with her passion for creating, especially baking.

The owner of Bake, Craft and Create, Delano said she always crafted, but when she won first place for a black skirt with side buttons she made for a competition at her high school in Virginia, she realized she had talent to share.

While creating continued to be a hobby for her, Delano pursued a career as a licensed massage therapist and worked with the special needs community. She moved to Connecticut and had her four children, now ages 20-34, and needed to find a way to make money while putting her children first.

“My kids were my priority,” she said. “I didn’t want to miss any sports event or prom –or anything – so I found ways to make money that allowed me to attend everything.”

GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 33 ! HOPE TREMBLAY NATE BLAIS & SUBMITTED

Delano sold various creations at craft fairs and found her baked goods were best sellers.

“I am mostly self-taught, but I have taken classes, some online, to increase my knowledge,” she said, noting she is proud to stay on top of trends and tech. After years of honing her baking skills and becoming known for her cupcakes, she decided it was time to open her own studio and share her love and talent for baking with others. Then, Covid hit.

“It was three months before the pandemic started,” Delano recalled. “I found a space to rent and I had a plan. Then Covid shut things down, but I survived and I am still here working hard.”

Delano didn’t let a little thing like a global pandemic stop her from opening Bake, Craft and Create, LLC at 142 North Rd., East Windsor, CT. In fact, she worked even harder to make it a success. At her studio, she not only bakes for others – she helps others bake. Bake, Craft and Create offers cookie and cake decorating classes for all ages, hosts birthday parties and has special events, such as the popular Vino & Cake decorating event.

Bake, Craft and Create also hosts a yearly gingerbread decorating event that Delano said is always a hit, especially with families.

“Everyone gets their own pre-built house to decorate that I put together using my own royal icing,” she said.

All the supplies to decorate the house are provided and Santa makes a visit.

“Everyone 12 and under receives a gift from Santa and families can take photos – it’s a lot of fun,” Delano said.

This year’s event is Dec. 10.

Vino & Cake is exactly what it sounds like: a fun night drinking wine and learning to decorate a cake. Delano said the next Vino & Cake event is Dec. 15 and is sure to fill quickly. The focus, she said, is on fondant work.

“Everyone gets a two-layer cake already covered in fondant and they learn detail fondant work,” said Delano. “I love fondant because you can always make a mistake better.”

Fondant is a sweet frosting that is rolled and smoothed, not applied with a knife. Fondant alone doesn’t taste like much, but Delano said her recipe tastes great. So does her buttercream.

“I specialize in floral cupcakes and my buttercream is very popular,” she said. “My buttercream and vanilla sugar cookies are a

34 GO LOCAL DECEMBER 2022

good pair.”

Bake, Craft and Create also teams up for classes at other locations, including Powder Hollow Brewery. Delano said she loves teaching decorating skills, whether it’s a Christmas floral cupcake or an Easter cookie.

“I want everyone to leave feeling proud of what they’ve created,” she said. “That’s why I do this.”

Delano said she loves baking cupcakes, especially mini cupcakes. Actually – baking a smaller version of anything makes her happy.

“I love minis,” she said. “And French macarons – I really can’t choose my favorite.”

Bake, Craft and Create also offers summer camps for children and Delano has plans to host Joyce’s Cake Art Camp for people with disabilities.

“I want them to be able to create something on their own at their own pace, with no judgment,” she said, adding that the camp is named for a friend’s mother who played an important role in Delano’s life and introduced her to the special needs community.

Delano, 55, said now that her children are grown and her business is flourishing, she is pursuing her dream of earning her degree as a pastry chef.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time – 30 years – and I have many friends who have appeared on Food Network and Martha Stewart’s show, and I have learned from them and studied on my own, but I want that diploma,” Delano said.

Delano is confident in her abilities and what she offers at Bake, Craft and Create.

“There’s nothing like my studio anywhere else in Connecticut, and when I go home to Virginia there’s nothing like it there, so I hope to open a studio there,” she said. “I can’t sit still, and I am always trying different things and I have a lot more I want to do.”
