BEE HAPPY CANDLE COMPANY Bumblebees flutter about gardens and occupy the outdoors during the warm summers in Broad Brook. As Erica Giroux sat in her garden, holding her young son Jace in her arms, the two watched the insects sway about the flowers. This is where the idea for Bee Happy Candle Company was born.

When I think of my dad, I think of a flamingo. Not just any flamingo, but one wearing

sunglasses and a Hawaiian shirt. This may not make sense to Go Local readers, but it is a symbol of our relationship. My dad bought me a trinket of the described flamingo four

years ago, and it has traveled from Springfield to Windsor Locks with me, where it is displayed in my home prominently. My dad is the reason I am able to drive. He gave me lessons in my early twenties, and I was terrified. I always got into my own head. We got into an argument during a lesson one day, and I was ready to give up. My dad, not sure how to resolve it, went to the dollar store and found the flamingo. He walked into my room and, without a word, sat it on my desk. I couldn’t stop laughing, and the rest is history. I got my license about a month later. It says a lot about our relationship. It’s one based on laughs and him inspiring me to always push forward. When my dad tells me I can accomplish something, I know it’s true.

But that’s probably because I’ve always looked at him like one of the superheroes he loves. While my mom is busy filling the walls with giraffe portraits, my dad is stockpiling a Marvel and Blizzard Games collection for his room that he’s been “working on” for years.

Everything about my dad has always been cool. My dad’s favorite superhero is Spider-

Man, so naturally, so is mine. He plays softball, so I joined a team as a kid (turns out I need

My dad jams out to rock music almost exclusively, so my first album at 12 years old was Green Day’s “International Superhits!” I can thank him for who I am today and for teaching me a lot of important lessons. My dad has inspired me. If you work for Reminder Publishing, stroll by my desk one day and check out my sea of action figures. The barbarian is the best character to choose when playing a video game, and it doesn’t hurt to be as tough as one in real life. Some days are going to feel like a journey to Mordor and back, but that doesn’t mean you should ever give up. There’s a huge difference between being a geek and a nerd. shelves filled with action figures and comic books. Most importantly, be yourself. The pages of this edition contain cool Father’s Day events and gifts. I’m going a slightly different route this Father’s Day due to my dad’s unique interests. Maybe swap the traditional tie for a Spider-Man mask or replica sword? The possibilities are endless. My dad is my superhero, always there to save the day or rescue me when times are tough, and I am forever grateful. I’m even grateful for my eccentric middle name that was inspired by a Dungeons and Dragons elf.

CrookeD stick pops offer healthy ice cream alternative ! STEPHANIE TROMBLEY Camera JULIE TUMAN
W
ith the welcoming of summer comes toasty temperatures and shining rays of sun. In New England, it can get hot quickly. For those seeking a healthier alternative to traditional ice cream, business owner Julie Tuman brings Crooked Stick Pops to not only her home base of Easthampton, but to events around the local area. With a location in the Eastworks building, Tuman and her team serve up ice pops to the community with a healthy twist. Ingredients such as herbs and fresh, local fruit go into the many ice pop offerings found both on Pleasant Street and at places like farmer’s markets and festivals. “It was a multifaceted thing. I was in a work position that I wasn’t really enjoying, so I was looking for additional work and didn’t see anything that appealed to me. I wanted to work somewhere local, but a lot of local positions require you to work in an office, which I didn’t want to do,” Tuman explained. Tuman had been working in the international education field. While she enjoyed the idea of working, she wanted to find a career where she could work for herself. “I’m a bit of a workaholic. I love working. People were telling me if I was going to work so hard, I should work for myself. In order to have a business you run, you have to love it.” 10 GO LOCAL JUNE 2019
Tuman and her husband were inspired by a small business in St. Augustine, Florida. “My husband and I have a family friend in St. Augustine who had a popsicle shop and we’d go sometimes up to six times a week. They were just great,” Tuman explained. Enjoying treats is one of Tuman’s favorite things to do, but she explained to Go Local that sweets are not her thing. “I’m not a huge sweets eater, but I love treats. It was my husband’s idea to start a popsicle business up here. He said, ‘you should do the popsicle business,’ and I said, ‘I’m stealing your dream’ but he said he would never do it,” Tuman said. With an idea and a passion for pops, Tuman took to the kitchen to start creating. “It was blueberry season and we picked a bunch of blueberries and I started playing with different recipes,” Tuman shared. After experimenting with recipes, Tuman took the jump and started Crooked Stick Pops. “I’m a frugal person and I was able to get what I needed for my business without taking out a loan. There was a risk that I would lose my savings, but I was willing to take that leap,” Tuman said. Tuman has continued to experiment with pop flavors using fresh and local ingredients, including an abundance of plums that was donated by a local farm.
“My kitchen is my happy place. There’s this nice ambient hum from the freezer and it smells good. I create a lot differently than other foodies because I don’t like to experiment and waste food. I create pop flavors in my head. I have this flavor of what I want in my mind’s eyes. I create the flavor and know what I’m going for. I’ll make a very small batch and tweak it until I get it right,” Tuman shared. Tuman said that she is happy to be a part of the Eastworks building, housing a number of growing businesses. “It’s so nice to be in a community of people doing their own thing,” Tuman shared. Crooked Stick Pops serves a variety of flavors including chocolate banana, coconut iced coffee and peach cheesecake. Tuman shared that strawberry lemonade, orange cream and Vietnamese coffee are among the shop’s most popular offerings. “It depends on the pop eater. Some people are in the mindset of ‘oh if she’s offering it, it must be good.’ Our oddball flavors are getting a lot of attention,” Tuman said. Tuman said that Crooked Stick Pops rotates between 10-15 pop flavors daily. “The other flavors really rotate depending on how popular they are and how frequently I’m making them. Once strawberries come in season, we’ll probably have 3-4 strawberry flavors to highlight growing season,” Tuman shared. While ice pops are available in the grocery store, Tuman said the healthy twist on her offerings make them a good choice. “It’s quite important to me to keep the pops healthy. Since I was young, I was a ‘perimeter of the grocery store’ shopper. I don’t eat a lot of processed foods. I grew up a healthy kid and we didn’t
have a lot of processed foods in the home,” Tuman said. Tuman continued, “Say you want a popsicle in the store, but they have preservatives and water. They put in a lot of garbage and it’s not great for you. I wanted to make the pops as healthy as I could. I don’t do anything that’s dairy or sugar based. We have awesome ice cream in Easthampton, I don’t need to do that.” Tuman said that she is thankful for the community and her customer base. “I enjoy so much of it. It’s really the community of people that I get to engage with. I didn’t really expect that in starting this business. I wanted to be boots on the ground talking to people. It’s incredibly gratifying to love something and watch people enjoy it. I didn’t realize people would want to go on this journey with me and enjoy my pop business. I call my customers my people,” Tuman said. Staying environmentally friendly and delicious is what makes Crooked Stick Pops a great place for treats, according to Tuman. “They’re really good. It sounds like a small and simple thing to say, but if people like fruit and don’t like everything too sweet, they’re perfect. You really taste the fruit and the natural herbs. It’s one of those things that are great if you like treats but you’re watching the sugar and calories. I have so little waste. We compost and reuse what we can,” Tuman said. STOP BY CROOKED STICK POPS DURING BUSINESS HOURS OR CHECK THEM OUT AT AN UPCOMING EVENT. THE SHOP IS OPEN WED.-SAT. FROM 12:30 P.M. TO 8 P.M. Strawberry Mostachon Cake IT’S STRAWBERRY SEASON! This dessert is a delicious combination of crackers with walnut, meringue and strawberries that’s easier than you imagine and its taste is spectacular! It’s light and sweet which makes it the perfect treat for dad this Father’s Day!
9” spring form pan, greased 4 egg whites, cold 1 cup granulated sugar for cake + 1/4 cup sugar for topping 2 tsp. vanilla, 1 tsp. for cake + 1 for filling 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/8 tsp. salt 1/8 tsp. cream of tartar 16 oz. vanilla wafers, coarsely crumbled 1 c. walnuts or pecans, chopped 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 2 tbsp. maple syrup 1 cup heavy cream 1/2 cup powdered sugar 1 lb. fresh, whole strawberries, hulled 2 tbsp. cornstarch 2 tbsp. strawberry gelatin 1/4 cup water 1 tbsp. lemon juice
JANET PARÉ is a home cook who began baking with her Memere (grandmother) at the age of 6. Retired and living in Southampton with her dog, Ziggy and cat, Elie Mae, she now enjoys cooking for family and friends.
To make the Cake: Preheat oven to 350°. Use electric mixer to whisk egg whites until soft peaks form. While still beating, slowly add granulated sugar 1 tbsp. at a time until 1 cup is incorporated. Add vanilla, baking powder, salt and cream of tartar. Once stiff peaks form, gently fold in crumbled vanilla wafers and nuts. Be careful not to over mix. Spoon into prepared spring form pan. Bake at 350° until lightly browned and center is firm, 35 - 40 minutes. Cool 15 minutes, run knife around edges, remove ring. Once completely cooled, remove cake from bottom pan using an offset spatula and place on serving plate.
To make the Filling: Whisk heavy cream with electric mixer. When soft peaks form, add cream cheese a dollop at a time until fully incorporated. Mix in powdered sugar, maple syrup and vanilla. Refrigerate. Spoon onto completely cooled cake and garnish with topping below. To make the Topping: In medium sauce pan, whisk cornstarch, 1/4 cup granulated sugar, strawberry gelatin, lemon juice and 1/4 cup water. Cook on low, whisking constantly until thickened. Cool 20 minutes. Add strawberries. Stir gently, until coated. Spoon over cake filling. Refrigerate until ready to serve. ENJOY!
Variation: Replace strawberries and strawberry gelatin with peaches or mangoes and peach gelatin. GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 13

DON’T WORRY,
! STEPHANIE TROMBLEY NATHAN BLAIS
B
umblebees flutter about gardens and occupy the outdoors during the warm summers in Broad Brook. As Erica Giroux sat in her garden, holding her young son Jace in her arms, the two watched the insects sway about the flowers. This is where the idea for Bee Happy Candle Company was born. Although Giroux had been a maker since 2011 and owner of The Playful Peacock, Bee Happy Candle Company is her newest adventure. Starting with a hobby of beading, Giroux developed her craft into what it has become today. “It all started when I was in college. It had to be 2011. I took a beading class at a shop that used to be in East Longmeadow. I started making jewelry out of things like random bottle caps. I was in college and didn’t have the money to buy a lot of beading stuff,” Giroux shared. Giroux continued, “I tried doing a couple of events but it didn’t totally take off and I just wasn’t at that point yet.” Giroux’s husband joined the army shortly after, prompting a move to Texas. “It was hard for me down there. It’s just different
to find a job. So I was like, ‘you know what? I think I could do this,” Giroux said. Giroux assembled a small crafting room and got to work. “I started really looking into YouTube videos and how to make jewelry and taught myself to make a lot of stuff. I found a little farmer’s market down there and set up an embarrassing little booth. It was not great, but it grew and was a super fluid process of learning what I liked to make and what tools I liked using,” she shared. Contrary to her first experience in jewelry making, Giroux found that beading wasn’t her passion. “I’m not a beader. I don’t do the small beading. I like to use metal and that turned into hammering metal and then it turned into soldering. I do a lot of different stuff. I can’t do it with the kids around because you have to wear masks and all of that,” Giroux said. After the birth of Giroux’s daughter, she suffered from postpartum depression. “I wasn’t creating as much and I wasn’t feeling GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 21
great about myself,” Giroux said. After some soul searching, Giroux discovered what she felt would help ease some of the anxiety she was experiencing. “One day, I was sitting there and I was thinking about what makes me happy because I was really in a bad place. I thought about this summer when Jace and me sat outside and watched bees in the garden and gardening with him and how happy that makes me. I wondered, ‘how do you capture a moment and turn it into something physical?’” Giroux shared. Giroux continued, “I was trying to think, ‘how do you capture a feeling and bottle it? How do you turn something that makes you really happy into something that you can give to others?’” Using beeswax as the base, Giroux developed a variety of candles. A portion of the sales of each Bee Happy Candle Company product is donated to bee conservation efforts. “It’s like one of those moments where you’re in the shower and you just think of a really good idea. I thought, ‘what if we made beeswax candles and we could donate part of the money to bees and help them.’ Without them, the moment that I had with Jace sitting out there wouldn’t be possible and they’re in danger,” Giroux shared. Giroux continued, “I just love candles. I feel like candles are something you can use when you come home from work and you’re stressed. You light a candle and you read a book. I think for a lot of people, they’re a feel-good type thing.” With bees being a vital part of nature, Giroux decided to keep the candles eco-friendly overall. “I thought we could add a cause to the candles and also use natural scents and natural ingredients. We could make them eco-friendly and have really witty little names,” Giroux said. Among Giroux’s “witty” names are “Just Bee,” an unscented candle and “Bee Stress Free,” a therapeutic blend including mint, citrus and eucalyptus. “They’re all different. It really lent itself to some fun names and different drawings. I drew up a little bee with the crown for our logo,” Giroux said. While some of the metal work Giroux does with jewelry is not an activity suitable for children, Giroux said making candles has created an opportunity for her to bond with her children. “I thought it would be a way to involve the kids. They can’t do jewelry, so I wanted something that we could do together,” Giroux said. Customers shouldn’t be shocked if they purchase a candle with a crooked label, it’s just Jace’s way of helping with the project. “Jace does not pour the wax. He puts the stickers on, so that’s why a lot of them look lopsided. But people seem to like it. We make them together and it’s like a family affair. I think it’s really fun and making memories with them,” Giroux said. Giroux said she hopes to expand her business further and to continue to support bees. “People have taken to the cause behind it. That’s been really inspiring for me to keep that going. I’m 22 GO LOCAL JUNE 2019
thinking of growing and maybe coming out with some t-shirts or different things that we can donate all of the proceeds from,” Giroux shared. She is also happy to see the direction in which her business has traveled. “It started with The Playful Peacock and I wanted to add more and more to it because I love jewelry. But a lot of markets tend to be saturated with jewelry. I have to always be honing in on different skills and making my stuff a little different to have a variety of things,” Giroux said. Giroux said it was important for her to show that the maker market is alive and well. “Everything I do, for the most part, is handmade. I solder, I go to gem shows and get beads and I make my own displays because I like doing it. I wanted this to be a business where I could show people that the handmade movement is still here. There’s such a cool group of handmade artisans in this area and we’re all friends,” Giroux shared. The maker community has a good relationship, according to Giroux. “Even though we all make the same type of stuff or use some of the same materials, we’re all super friendly with each other and I found that to be almost surprising that it’s not compet-
ing. We all go to events together. We hang out and share ideas,” Giroux said. Giroux refers to her business as “perfectly imperfect.” “It’s imperfect because I make things and I’m not a machine and I can’t make things perfectly, but I think that people have been really fond of the idea of ‘this is one-of-a-kind and she made this.’ I make things with my own two hands and it makes it special because even if I make two of the same thing, they’re never going to be the same. Instead of seeing that as a negative, I’ve tried to push that as a positive, that handmade is from the heart and this is something that I made for you and put my heart and soul and time into. It’s really special for me to be able to do that,” Giroux said. Giroux shares her love for making with the community by hosting classes in locations such as Book Club Bookstore in South Windsor. “I like to keep it unstructured. I don’t necessarily like to do the classes that are like ‘do this and then it needs to look like this and then do this.’ I give people an idea and examples and they can make it their own. Otherwise, I find people get anxious about it if it doesn’t turn out looking exactly the same.” Giroux GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 23
said. She has also worked alongside East Windsor Parks and Recreation and the local Girl Scouts. “It’s really fun to sit there and see their faces at the end when they create something they love,” Giroux said. For those interested in jumpstarting a career in making, Giroux suggests finding what works best and not using the Internet for too much inspiration. “I think it’s important to give yourself time to find what you like doing. There’s all different ways and materials that you can find and it’s about not giving up if a certain thing doesn’t work for you. If you get inspiration online, you have to just use things like YouTube as a resource and not try to copy or do what someone else is doing,” Giroux said. Keeping the focus on nature is also close to Giroux’s heart. “I’m a super-duper nature person. Nature in general has always been really important to me and I think that plays into The Playful Peacock as well. I’m supporting nature and finding inspiration in it. I’d love to see this just continue to grow and inspire people. I want to keep getting our message out about how important nature, bees and shopping small are. I think they all play into each other. Adding a cause, like helping bees, opens the conversation. I think people are ready. They’re tired,” Giroux said. Giroux continued, “I think people see it. People drive down the street and they’re seeing the garbage. They’re seeing, you know, the articles that bees are on the endangered species list now. It’s real. It’s time now to do something about it, so I love having the business kind of tie into that too. It’s really important. It’s important stuff to me. It’s part of who I am. So to be able to use that to really be a voice for nature and different things because I think it’s just good vibes. The business is all about good vibes.” FOR MORE INFORMATION ON BEE HAPPY CANDLE COMPANY AND THE PLAYFUL PEACOCK, VISIT WWW.THEPLAYFULPEACOCKCT.COM

wo Longmeadow High School students are showing the community that all it takes is an idea and an important cause to make a difference. Sophomore Wesley Breed is the founder of Cars of Longmeadow, a car show that seeks to fundraise for the Lupus Research Alliance. Longmeadow High School Senior Max Loyuk co-founded the event, which hosted its first show in 2018 at the school. For 2019, Breed and Loyuk will host the car show at Longmeadow Shops, located at 690 Bliss Road in Longmeadow. Go Local met with Breed to discuss Cars of Longmeadow’s beginnings and to find out what attendees could expect in 2019. “I’ve had a ginormous love for cars ever since I was a little kid. I would go to car shows with my dad and one of my main complaints was that there were no car shows around here. I said, ‘You know what? Maybe I should start one.’ That was years and years back. I had no motive and no means of getting started,” Breed shared.
While the idea didn’t come to fruition until later in Breed’s life, he never stopped dreaming it up. It was when his family was faced with a difficult circumstance that Breed decided to start the Cars of Longmeadow show. “Come August of 2017, my little sister Claudia was diagnosed with lupus. It’s a severe autoimmune disease. That was a big hit to my family. This was something that was completely unexpected. I wanted to give back to the lupus community, so I thought, ‘why don’t I combine my love for cars with an awesome cause, the Lupus Research Alliance and create a car show in Longmeadow?’ A lot of people around here really love cars as much as me,” Breed said. With an idea in place, Breed set out to plan the first Cars of Longmeadow Car Show. “I went and I talked to people at my high school and was like, ‘alright, I need a public lot that has a lot of space and flexibility.’ They were down with it and I had a very successful event last year,” Breed shared. 33 GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 27
The 2018 car show brought out over 110 cars and raised over $8,000 for the Lupus Research Alliance. “That was just incredible. It was really amazing. I felt so inspired, so Max and I agreed that we had to put this on every year,” Breed said. Following the 2018 show, Melissa Pevay, marketing manager of Longmeadow Shops reached out to Breed about hosting the show at Longmeadow Shops. “Here we are now, looking at year two, right here at the Longmeadow Shops,” Breed said. “We reached out to them. They hung posters all around the Longmeadow Shops last year. When I reached out, I had assumed adults had put this event on. It blew me away. I was amazed when Wes reached out to me and I realized he wasn’t old enough to drive. It’s tough to find kids these days that will spend their free time and Longmeadow High School has a pretty rigorous program over there. It’s pretty incredible that they put this together. It’s super cool that one is old enough to drive and one’s not and they put together this awesome car show,” Pevay commented. As much as Breed enjoys cars, he said his biggest goal with the show is to fundraise for the Lupus Research Alliance. “My biggest aim is to raise as much money for the Lupus Research Alliance as possible. All of the fees related to the car show, like the vehicle registration fee, all goes directly to the charity,” Breed said. The Lupus Research Alliance created the registration webpage for the Cars of Longmeadow show, which means each time someone submits a donation online, it goes straight to the foundation. While gathering a group of cool cars can be a challenge, Breed said his own Instagram account has been helpful. “I go to a lot of car shows. I run an Instagram page and put all of my car photos on there that I take and edit on my computer. Through that and through my passion to go out to car shows, I make a lot of connections with others throughout the scene. And through that, I’ve built a portfolio,” Breed shared. Breed continued, “It’s really through Instagram that I meet people. I send them a direct message and I’m like, ‘hey, I know you own this amazing car. We have a charity car show going on in July in Longmeadow. All proceeds go to the Lupus Research Alliance.’ And for the most part, if they see that it’s a charity show, they usually say, ‘wow, this is a passionate kid doing something he loves, I’ll be there.’ That’s kind of how word of mouth spreads.” With the success of the 2018 Cars of Longmeadow show, Breed said he is expecting more car registrations for 2019. When Go Local met with Breed at the beginning of May, he said that planning was already ahead of schedule. “I’m expecting that we will have more cars this year. At this time in planning last year, we had zero registrations, but I already have 28 GO LOCAL JUNE 2019
14. So we are ahead of schedule,” Breed shared. Breed explained that the 2018 show brought several last minute registrations. “We had more than 20 people register the night before last year. Cars can register the day of the show as well and I’m hoping to have friends helping people register the day of,” Breed said. As Breed nears his junior year of high school, he shared that he hopes to continue the car show into college. “I want to make sure that I can still at least contribute to this event even after I leave for college. I’ll probably be back home for the summer. This is probably one of the greatest things I’ve ever been able to put together, so I want to keep running it because it’s just really fun. Seeing all of these people that I know from this town that I’ve see around come together for this car show that I started is really fun,” Breed said. Breed said he would like to see the community come together for the event. “It’s a fun event with an amazing cause behind it. It’s something that everyone can enjoy. Even if you don’t appreciate cars that much, when you come out and see all of these
amazing vehicles together, you’ll be like ‘wow.’ This community is huge and there’s a lot of amazing stuff that goes on with the car community and to see that all of these cars are down here in town, in Western Mass, it’ll just be a fun day for everyone,” Breed said. To register a vehicle, there is a $25 minimum required donation. Registrants can choose to donate more toward the Lupus Research Foundation. For those with a loved one who has been affected by lupus, the option to donate in someone’s name is also available. The Cars of Longmeadow show is currently seeking sponsors. To sponsor the show, contact info@carsoflongmeadow.org. The Cars of Longmeadow show will take place July 28 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Longmeadow Shops. The rain date for the show is Aug. 4. The event is free for spectators. Guests are welcome to donate online at www.carsoflongmeadow.org. Donation tents will also be available at the show. DIN0 BITES IS DINO-MITE! ! STEPHANIE TROMBLEY Camera DAVID HOSMER
S
tafford Springs resident David Shovlin began his business with the frame of a hot dog cart and a dream. Working for several years on his business, CT Chainsaw Sculptures, Shovlin was ready to take on a new challenge. Shovlin is the owner of Dino Bites, a dinosaur-themed hot dog cart business that travels to local events and parties bringing fun times and food to guests. Shovlin has worked since April 2018 to create the cart. While Shovlin only had the fossil of a cart to begin with, hard work and dedication has led to what Dino Bites has become today. “It kind of started when I was driving by this dilapidated cart. This thing was just trashed. I drove by it literally every day going ‘somebody should fix that up, it’d be a fun project,’” Shovlin shared. After admiring the cart from afar during his daily commute, Shovlin took the leap and decided to inquire about purchasing
it. “There was one day where I had ten minutes to kill. I was early for an appointment and the owner just happened to be outside. So I drove up and asked him how much he wanted for it. He said, ‘give me $100, it’s yours.’ I happened to have $100 in my pocket exactly,” Shovlin said. During the drive home, Shovlin realize that the hot dog cart wasn’t quite what he was expecting. “He hitched it up to his truck for me and on the way home, this thing started falling apart on the road. The lights started falling off of it. I knew it was a pile of junk when I bought it. We got it home and there was nothing salvageable on it. Everything had to be thrown away from top to bottom,” Shovlin said. Shovlin continued, “I literally thought it was going to be simple: put a new top on it, grab a cooler and a grill, and you’re in the hot dog business. It was nothing like that.” With his wife, Donna, by his side, Shovlin took on the necessary steps to jumpstart what would become their future hot dog cart GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 33
business. “My wife was the one who took care of all of the paperwork that was involved with the health department. There’s a lot of things to consider. I didn’t know that you had to have a commercial freezer on board, which led to ‘how do I power that?’ I’m thankful for YouTube,” Shovlin shared. Shovlin continued, “My wife did all of the research with the health department and they were super helpful. I proceeded to build out the entire cart.” Dinosaurs weren’t always on Shovlin’s mind. It was the middle of the night when Shovlin dreamed up a Jurassic theme. “I’ve been sculpting for several years. But I woke up one night around two in the morning and thought, ‘the cart should have a theme.’ I don’t know where this came from, but I thought something catchy would be dinosaurs. I had a whole half of the cart to play with for the marketing of it. After it dawned on me that dinosaurs would be the way to go, I then started sculpting the actual dinosaurs myself,” Shovlin said. From then on, it was history. Or, pre-historic. The dinosaurs found on the cart are hand sculpted by Shovlin using foam and an epoxy resin. The first dinosaur to inhabit the cart was a Tyrannosaurus Rex in a cage. Shovlin decided to add

more, with one extra detail: the ability to talk. “I wanted another dinosaur that would interact with the public. We added that our second year in business, a triceratops named Tops,” Shovlin said. Tops speaks through a wireless microphone that is hidden behind the scenes. Shovlin uses the microphone to speak to guests as Tops. The cart also includes a sound system and a synthesizer that creates sound effects such as crickets and ominous noises. Tops’s mouth is controlled with brake cables, similar to those found on a bicycle. “We do dinosaur-themed parties and it’s a great way to attract people and get their attention to come to the cart,” Shovlin said. Tops was created after Shovlin found a dinosaur skeleton Halloween decoration at Home Depot. “I didn’t want to have a skeleton that would scare people and I wanted to make it more interactive,” Shovlin shared. With Tops up and running at the cart, Shovlin said that customers have enjoyed interacting with him. “It’s really funny. They don’t expect the thing to move. When they come close to look at it, the thing moves. When it starts talking, the kids start freak-
ing out. They go ballistic,” Shovlin said. Shovlin said that the reactions of kids who stop by Dino Bites makes the four months of work Tops and other décor at the cart took worth it. “They think it’s real. This one kid, he was talking with it for quite some time and he screams at the top of his lungs, ‘this is not a hot dog cart, it’s an adventure!’ It’s funny what these kids will come up with and what they say. It made four months of work worth it,” Shovlin shared. Dino Bites has seen success at small town events and private parties. Shovlin said he attributes this in part to the hot dogs served on the cart. Dino Bites serves hot dogs and kielbasa from Martin Rosol’s Meats, a business from New Britain. “We did our research. We asked everyone what their favorite hot dogs were and they were just great to deal with. They had the best hot dog,” Shovlin said. As the business grows, Shovlin said he feels that he and Donna are prepared for anything. “The first night we launched was at this huge fireworks festival. We were not prepared. We were prepared food-wise, but it was pitch black and the cart has a ton of lighting in it. The lights just attracted everyone. We went from 0 to 50 people in line. Donna
was writing up tickets so fast, I didn’t know what to do. I looked down and I don’t think I looked up for three hours until we were done. But we did it,” Shovlin shared. Dino Bites is hoping to also branch out to include breakfast items such as pancakes and coffee in the future. After dreaming up the cart, Shovlin said he is having fun watching the business grow. “Before we got into this business, Donna and I watched every episode of ‘Restaurant Impossible’ and ‘Kitchen Nightmares.’ I think everybody wants to try this. Everyone wants to own a restaurant if you like to cook,” Shovlin said. Shovlin continued, “I enjoy having fun with the kids and watching their reactions with Tops. I definitely enjoy the cooking. I really have fun cooking and I enjoy that much more than I thought I would.” TO LEARN MORE ABOUT DINO BITES, VISIT FACEBOOK.COM/DINOBITESCT CHECK OUT DINO BITES AT THEIR NEXT EVENT FOR A ROARING GOOD TIME.
