As a grizzled old ink-stained newspaper person, I should have a big coffee habit. Cut a vein and either ink or coffee should flow out, right? I have all the other bad habits associated with my profession – at least for my generation. I like cigars, swearing, cynicism and scotch and bourbon. I’ve never developed a real coffee habit. I’ve been married for 40 years to a real coffee aficionado and over that time I have developed an appreciation for various coffee drinks and iced coffee. A basic cup of Joe, though, is not among the beverages I drink. My wife can tell you – like most of the members of my staff – where is the best coffee in the region. She is not a big supporter of chain coffee places, but instead prefers the independently operated establishments owned by people who are truly coffee fans like her. One of her favorites is profiled in this edition of Go Local, Agawam’s Java Stop. It’s a frequent destination for her when she and her father are doing one of their weekly drives through the region. She keeps telling me that she will bring me to it as they offer some delicious beverages. That’s the whole point of Go Local – to present area people and businesses that contribute to the rich culture of our region. The problem with reading the story about PawSafe Animal Rescue is that instinctively I just want to drive down and adopt. My wife and I are big animal fans. We currently have six cats – all of who were rescue – and a dog who we took from our daughter when allergy issues arose. There are too many dogs who need and deserve a loving home. I identify with one of my favorite American authors when it comes to dogs. Twain had many memorable quotes about our best friends. “If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you. This is the principal difference between a dog and a man,” he wrote. He also said, “The more I learn about people, the more I like my dog.” He also said, “Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in.” They are doing God’s work in my opinion. Speaking of the divine, is there anything better than some New England seafood? I will now put Cold Harbor Seafood & Market on my list of places to try. Even though we are merely an hour and half away from the Atlantic, sometimes it’s difficult to find seafood that compares to what you can get on Cape Cod. The folks at Cold Harbor make the trek to the fish markets at Boston South Seaport three times a week to ensure quality and freshness. I have to try it. Although this issue features a guide to local day spas, I have to admit while their features sound relaxing, I probably wouldn’t be at ease at one. Instead I think a great idea for a spa for a person such as me would be a relaxing setting with a great glass of iced coffee, a puppy to pet and a plate of great seafood. Now, that’s living! Until next month, consider taking some of the suggestions listed here and enjoy western New England.

don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like coffee,” laughed Craig Jurasz. Does he love coffee? Of course, he does. Jurasz, who has spent a good portion of his working life serving coffee to customers, whether at a restaurant where he once worked or at his own coffee shops, is the owner of Agawam’s Java Stop which will celebrate its sixth year of operation in December. Why do people love coffee so much? Jurasz has a simple answer. “It wakes you up and gives you the energy you need to get through Monday and the rest of the week,” he said. Central Perks, the fictional coffee shop where the popular characters

on the NBC sitcom “Friends” used to meet, helped the popularity of coffee shops everywhere. “That was back in the ’90s. I was living in Washington state at the time and already there were at least seven coffee shops within a block’s radius of my house. I think the trend with a lot of good things like music and coffee, for example, is that they start in the West and migrate to the East,” he said. Howard Schultz did much to further the coffeehouse concept. After traveling to Italy, where he saw the popularity of espresso bars in Milan, his goal was to create a similar coffeehouse culture in Seattle with Starbucks. In 1984, he convinced its founders to test the coffeehouse concept in downtown Seattle, where

the first Starbucks Caffè Latte was served and the idea went on to great success. “When I came back to the area about 19 years ago after marrying my wife, Heidi, I felt there were no good coffee shops here like the ones that were within driving distance of my home in Vancouver. I couldn’t stand Dunkin’ anymore, and I could never figure out how Starbucks made it out of Seattle where it started. There were so many other good coffee shops in Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland, OR, just a ways from Vancouver, to choose from,” he said. So, the Chicopee native opened his own coffee shop called the Route 20 Java Stop. While he considered it to be a success, he sold the business, which GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 11

eventually closed its doors for good, when his son was born prematurely to focus on his health. “I was never really worried about the competition, the bigger guys, because I knew we could provide a better product and win people over as the smaller guy,” Jurasz said. It wouldn’t be for another eight years that Jurasz would take a second shot in the coffee business after working in different restaurants throughout the area. “I wanted to create a fun place for people to come and feel comfortable, not some snobby coffee shop. And I wanted us to focus on customer service,” Jurasz said. “It makes me happy to hear on a day that I wasn’t at work that the service was great and there was a good review online. I know my staff took care of them. I’m kind of a pain when I go out to other places. We bend over backwards for our customers and I just want a fraction of that from others. We used to be a manufacturing country, now we’re a service country, and no one can do it,” he added. After Jurasz opened his new shop – somewhat smaller than he wanted, but still with a six-seat counter service – he said within six months it was busier than his first shop ever was. In addition to good coffee and good service, he attributes the success in part to competition. “There wasn’t a Starbucks around when I opened my first shop, but by the time I opened my new shop there was a local Starbucks. So, people being accustomed to espresso, cappuccino, and lattes which we serve helped me, the local guy,” Jurasz said. Jurasz brews Pierce Bros. Coffee, including dark roasts like Black Bear, medium roasts, and decaf, alongside four flavored coffees including vanilla, hazelnut, chocolate and a “flavor of the month.” Coffee lovers can choose from hot brew and cold brew including nitro. For those who like their coffee strong, emphasis on very strong, there are two different brand options – Death Wish with its jolting over 700 milligrams of caffeine and Devil Mountain, which boasts its brew as “the most powerful coffee in the world” at 1,555 milligrams of caffeine. 12 GO LOCAL NOVEMBER 2019

“Normal coffee is about 150 milligrams,” Jurasz said. But the real specialty of the house is the many lattes they create. “We have some 200 different kinds of lattes that appeal to a wide variety of customers that we make from 64 different syrups. We didn’t start off with that many, but they grew when customers would come in and customize their own lattes with different combinations of those syrups. Some tasted really good and went on to be added to our latte menu, with a title that often carried the customer’s name,” Jurasz said.

Jurasz shared his top-five selling lattes, including one special to the fall season: 1. Chico’s ChiQuita – Nutella, banana, and salted caramel 2. Gina’s Peanut Butter Cup – Chocolate, real peanut butter and

peanut butter syrup 3. Kylie’s Kickin’ Cup – Real peanut butter, chocolate 4. Dad’s Fluffernutter – Real peanut butter, toasted marshmallow and vanilla 5. Hocus Pocus – Pumpkin, chocolate chip cookie dough, and cookie butter. “My son came up with the Kickin’ Cup combination when he was around age nine, so we named it after him,” Jurasz said. When October came around at the shop several years ago, the barista noted he put his staff up to a challenge. “I told them everyone has pumpkin spice on their menus. We have to do better than that. And they did, coming up with 31 different pumpkin combinations, one for each day in October. Then we went on to do the same for Christmas, getting into the GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 13

spirit with 21 seasonal holiday lattes,” Jurasz said about their creative lattes which continue to mirror the seasons. But, it’s not just java, lattes and more on the menu at Agawam’s Java Stop. Thirsty customers can also order up Peppy Peach Green Tea Lemonade, Blackberry Mojito, Green Tea Lemonade, Mango Black Tea Lemonade, Frozen Iced Tea, Frozen Lemonade, Frozen Hot Chocolate, Hot Chocolate Caramel Apple Cider, Fruit Puree Smoothies, Italian Sodas, and more in different combinations. Want a little to eat with your drink? There are breakfast sandwiches and sweet treats from Mrs. Murphy’s Donuts in Southwick, including the shop’s popular donuts, cinnamon buns and apple fritters. Other selections include English muffins, a variety of breads and crispy angel wings pastry from Balboni Bakery in Agawam, as well as gluten free options from the Gluten Thief Bakery. Jurasz also has a local woman who bakes cupcakes for him, many of them imaginatively themed to holidays and more, including Christmas, Thanksgiving, Super Bowl, Halloween, Easter and Shark Week. “We also bake our own muffins like pumpkin, chocolate chip, cranberry orange, then once after Halloween we made muffins with leftover candy,” Jurasz said. While his son, now 14, has lost interest in helping at the shop, the couple’s five-year-old daughter, Lily, is picking up the slack. “She often comes in on Saturdays and draws pictures on the back of our loyalty cards. She’s also a good little salesgirl and will often ask customers, “Would you like something to eat with that?” Jurasz said. If you just read a few online reviews of Agawam’s Java Stop, it’s easy to see that Jurasz has reached his goal of creating a good product and top-notch service. “Certainly, it’s better coffee and service than anything you’ll find at Dunkin’ or Starbucks,” read one review. “Did Disney produce this place?” read another. “Found this little gem of a coffee shop after dropping the folks at the airport. You almost miss the location because it’s an adorable hole in the wall,” wrote another happy customer.

ow many times have you heard the story of a cute little dog with no collar for identification following a child home? “Can we keep him?” asks the child. But not all dogs are as lucky. Approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters such as PawSafe Animal Rescue in Ellington, CT, every year. Of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. The good news is that 3.2 million shelter animals are adopted each year. However, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized each year, a number which has been declining over time thanks to an increase in the percentage of animals adopted and an increase in the number of strays successfully returned to their

owners. PawSafe Animal Rescue – based out of Patterson, NY – officially opened in Ellington on May 15, 2019, but has been saving dogs, and sometimes cats, as a foster-based rescue since 1995. “We are currently leasing the new shelter space at 110 Sandy Beach Road in Ellington, and feverishly trying to raise the funds needed to purchase the property and officially make it our own. We’ve placed thousands of dogs in forever homes, but finding a forever home for PawSafe Rescue so we can continue with this mission has always been our dream,” said Chrissy Preste, marketing coordinator for PawSafe Animal Rescue. Preste noted that some of their adoptable animals are surrendered

to them locally, but most are saved from high-kill shelters down South, where the homeless pet populations are “staggering.” “Most come to us with names given to them by the shelter or by the veterinarian preparing them for transport, but we do name some of them ourselves. No one goes home without a name. We don’t believe in giving dogs ‘numbers.’ Then, most adoptive families give their pet a new name to start their new lives with,” Preste said. The shelter typically has an average of 25-30 pets in their care, but can have upwards of double that amount at any given time based on the time of year and how many foster homes they have available to help. “Fostering truly saves lives,” Preste said. When a foster home is available to care for a litter of puppies or an adult dog, that frees a spot in the shelter for them to save another life. The experience that the dogs get in a foster home – attention, training, routine, exposure to new people and other pets and public outings – prepares them for their new lives as a family member and pet, not a shelter animal. The shelter provides supplies for their fosters, so it only costs them their time and love. Volunteers are allowed to foster for just a day by taking a pup on what they call a “Snout and About” trip. For example, it could be a field trip to the volunteer’s home to 26 GO LOCAL NOVEMBER 2019

play for the day, a hike, or a walk to practice their leash training. Our longest foster periods are for those who open their homes to an expecting or nursing mama dog. If we have the opportunity to save not just one life, but the life of a mama and her litter of puppies, we line up a foster home that is committed to caring for them for around 8-9 weeks until the pups are ready to wean from their mother. We cannot save nearly as many dogs as we do without fostering and it is an imperative part of our success,” Preste said. “The added value to fostering is that it can be a great way to decide if adding a puppy or adult dog is a good idea at all for your family, since it has a shorter-term commitment than adopting,” Preste said. The volunteer and a foster for PawSafe tried to explain why someone would abandon their pet. “I think people abandon their animals on the side of the road because they are either ashamed or just plain don’t care enough to surrender them to a shelter. I honestly don’t know how to answer this because I can’t imagine ever dumping an innocent animal,” she said. Preste noted it’s true what you often hear, that rescue animals make great pets. “All pets are very special. Rescues are said to spend their lives devoted to showing their owners just how appreciative they are for having saved them. We think they are extra special because they truly got a second chance at life,” she said. Preste noted it is their goal to place homeless dogs in a permanent home as soon as they are ready to go home and have a perfect match, which usually takes under a month. However, we will care for all dogs as long as needed. During the adoption process, it is important to make the right match, puppy to home and new home to puppy.

“We have an adoption application that asks very specific questions about the type of home the applicant is able to provide their new pet, as well as to give us an idea of what traits they’re looking for in their new rescue,” Preste said. Once an application is reviewed and approved, the family is invited to meet not just the dog that they are interested in from their picture and bio on the website, but all of their available dogs. “Nearly 75% of the time we find that their new family member chooses them, and they do not end up leaving the shelter with the dog that they originally anticipated adopting. Meeting the dogs in person is required by PawSafe because we want to ensure that it is a true match. We would never allow an adoption to take place without a proper meeting,” Preste said. Once a dog is matched and brought home, support is available for those adopting. “We want all pets to be successful in their new homes once adopted and GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 27

provide ample support to our adoptive families. There’s actually a clause in the signed adoption contract that if a family is unable to keep their rescue, it must be returned to us so we can ensure that it is safe and placed in a new, appropriate home. Our favorite way to stay in touch with families is in our wildly popular PawSafe Alumni Facebook group. Here adopters post updated pics of their growing pups, connect with the adoptive families of their dog’s siblings, and with their pup’s volunteer fosters. We absolutely love to get updates and seeing these dogs thrive in their new homes helps remind us why we do the work we do every day,” Preste said. The Ellington shelter has open adoption hours on most Mondays and Wednesdays. However, they encourage people to submit an adoption application online prior to visiting to speed up the interview process. “We are absolutely open for those who want to stop in, see what we are about, discuss whether they are ready to add a new furry family member to their home, and meet the adoptable pets in our care,” Preste said. Preste has a message for those considering abandoning their pets. “I encourage them to reach out to their local animal control or shelter for assistance, and remind them that abandoning your pet to fend for itself is illegal and punishable by law,” Preste said. “I have two rescue dogs and two rescue cats in my home. Gizmo is a fiveyear-old poodle mix and Ming Ming is a two-year-old blind and deaf poodle mix. I work full time at a local animal hospital when I’m not volunteering, so yes, I am passionate and committed to helping animals in need,” she added.

CRANBERRY SALSA

A delicious, healthy, and simple twist on traditional cranberry sauce. Serve as a side dish or as an appetizer served over cream cheese and crackers.

12 oz. fresh cranberries

Rinse, drain and discard soft or bruised cranberries.

1/4 cup scallions, sliced thin

Place remaining cranberries in a food processor or blender. Pulse until coarsely chopped then place in a large bowl.

2 jalapeño peppers, seeded and minced

Add scallions, jalapeños, ginger, walnuts and cilantro. Stir to combine.

2 tbsp. fresh ginger, peeled and finely grated 1/2 cup sugar

Sprinkle sugar over salsa and mix well. Pour lime juice over mixture and stir. Top with lime zest. Cover and refrigerate at least an hour to allow flavors to develop. ENJOY!

old Harbor Seafood & Market in Enfield opened its’ doors in June 2012 with one goal in mind...to offer the freshest fish and the best customer service around. Joe Lanzieri, along with his wife LuAnn feel that going above and beyond should be the norm in this quaint fresh fish market. “We are a fresh fish market, offering the highest quality and freshest fish you can find unless you catch it yourself. We are extremely particular about the quality of the fish we sell. Brought directly from the docks to our market.” said LuAnn. Not only does Cold Harbor regularly offer 15-20 different types of fish and shellfish, but we also have prepared take out along with a menu of “hot to-go” options such as Lobster rolls, fish tacos, Cajun shrimp

tacos, even traditional corned beef Rueben’s. A common misconception is that Cold Harbor is a sit down restaurant, it is not. There is no seating and everything is to take home and enjoy. A sample of the fresh seafood offered in the raw fish case on any given day could be: Idaho red trout, wild king salmon, bluefish, halibut, Georges Bank flounder, swordfish, bluefin tuna, haddock, cod, mako shark, halibut, dry sea scallops, Scottish salmon, lobsters, Jonah crab claws, wild shrimp, giant stuffing shrimp, tuna, swordfish, Chilean sea bass, steamers, top neck clams, mussels and more. In order to stock the freshest fish, the Cold Harbor crew travels several times a week to get fish from the docks in Boston’s South Seaport.

“We look for freshness, color and the best cuts first and foremost” Lanzieri said. “the fresher the fish and shellfish the better the taste” she stated. “Most people that don’t eat or like fish typically haven’t tried fish this fresh. I think they are surprised by how mild and buttery fish tastes from us.” When Joe, who had been in the food service & restaurant business for years– decided to open Cold Harbor seven years ago, it was with the intention of finding a commercial kitchen he could cater out of and at the same time offer a small counter where customers could purchase fresh fish. “ The demand for our fresh fish became so popular that within three weeks of opening, the idea of catering quickly went by the wayside in favor of just becoming a fresh fish market,” said Lanzieri. “We also began to offer different refrigerated prepared to-go foods, most all homemade, which you either bring home and warm up or 32 GO LOCAL NOVEMBER 2019

eat cold,” Lanzieri said. A sampling of the different items include crab cakes, shrimp salad, crab salad, cole slaw, shrimp cocktail and an “amazing” sauce, seafood stuffed portabella mushrooms, linguini and clams, seafood paella, and shrimp scampi. There are also an array of tastetempting chowders to choose from including New England clam chowder, bacon scallop chowder,corn and crab chowders and much more, with options changing daily. Cold Harbor is also winner of the North Central News Readers Poll for “Best Seafood” for five years in a row. At the counter, hungry fish (and meat) lovers can order up items prepared on the spot to take out and eat, whether at work or at home – including lobster rolls, fish tacos, crab cake sandwich, steak and lobster sandwich, Cajun shrimp tacos, and their “famous” reuben featuring their own oven roasted corned beef, sour kraut swiss and tangy dressing on a toasted ciabatta. Two days a week, Joe cooks up something special for customers. On Wednesday, customers can order (by noon on Wednesday) a 12 oz. prime rib with baked potato , sour cream and au jus for $12.95. On Friday, you can get $9.95 Hot Lobster Dinner which includes a 1 lb. steamed lobster, baked potato, butter, and in the summer, corn-on-the-cob. (order by 6pm on Thursdays) In addition to the special prime rib dinner to take home and reuben sandwiches to take out, Cold Harbor has a few other selections for landlubbers. “We usually have at least two prepared items, such as eggplant parmesan for those who may not be fish lovers, and as with our fresh cuts of fish we also have prime ribeye steaks to take home and cook or grill,” Lanzieri said. because of the health benefits and then end up loving it because ours has such a mild, buttery flavor.” Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for good health and vitality, especially for the heart, joints and brain. While salmon may be the most popular fish, when asked what the “filet mignon” equivalent is when it comes to fish, Lanzieri said it is bluefin tuna. “It really tastes just like a filet mignon. We sell it when it is available, it can be hard to find,” she said. While Catholics are not required to eat fish on Friday any longer, Lanzieri said it is still their busiest day, noting their special lobster dinner on Friday certainly keep it hopping. “Joe cares so much, we both do, about everything that goes out of our door. He is so careful and so concerned and wants everything to be perfect for the customer. Service is the utmost for us. We want people to feel welcome and know that they can trust us, that we stand behind everything we sell,” Lanzieri said. Cold Harbor is located on 465 Taylor Road in Enfield. ampden artist Mary Nadeau finally has some time to focus on her passion –

painting. “I’m getting myself back into art…. something that I love…..after working for so long. So, I’ve joined the Wilbraham Art League and Scantic Valley Artisans who do a lot of art shows. When I was doing design work, there was no time for art shows, but now I’m getting back to fine art,” she said about her recent paintings. Nadeau’s love of art grew while growing up on a farm. “We didn’t have the things back then that there are today, like computers. So, we had to keep ourselves busy. My sister and I would do our own drawings and color in coloring books. Even through high school I remained interested in art,” she said. But while in college and then later marriage to her husband David and starting a family, Nadeau lost track of what was once her passion. When her youngest was in junior high school and her other children were in high school, Nadeau got back to doing what she liked. “I began doing more illustraillustra tive design and creating characters like a silly chicken and Stella the penguin and started building a portfolio and a website. Word-ofmouth also helped,” Nadeau said. That led to clients looking for logos and business cards, others called her to create murals for them, and she was called upon to create props and scenery for area theaters as well. Nadeau also began selling greeting cards with her many art designs on etsy.com. And, she was sought out to create the illustrations for a book by Joan Robb called “Kugelicious: If I Only Had a Sukkah!” which still can be purchased on amazon.com. She has also taught art

classes for adults and children. And, Nadeau was doing some of this while working in special education, which she eventually left for a full-time job in the art world at 42 Design Fab, a design and fabrication studio in Indian Orchard. “While there I worked on the design and fabrication of museum exhibits. I helped to creating a turtle environment for one museum and other custom fabrications for clients like a giant dinosaur made out of fiberglass,” Nadeau said. When her older son moved to Georgia, he hooked his mom up with an acquaintance, Greg Roth, who created Mr. Greg’s Musical Madness. Children, parents and teachers from all over the world are familiar with Mr. Greg and his fun-filled educational videos, which are viewed online in millions of homes and schools, as well as on PBS. With Roth living in Georgia, and Nadeau in Massachusetts, they worked long distance as he hired her to do design backgrounds for his YouTube videos and to create characters to be used on musical worksheets when he would visit schools. Nadeau later was hired to create prop designs for a video that parodied puppets and that was shown at the Atlanta Film Festival in Georgia. “I thought this was going to be for kids, but when I got more into it, it’s strictly for adults and you wouldn’t want any child to see it,” Nadeau said. While Nadeau had to put her art “on hold” for a time during some family health issues, she said “things are literally getting calmer.” “Even with the grandkids visiting, it is still calmer around the house,” she said. Today Nadeau is concentrating on her painting and getting more exposure for her work through area art shows. She also plans on reviving her etsy.com store with more greeting cards and prints for sale, as well as updating her website, www.nadeauart.com, and Facebook page. She also hopes to get back to teaching art classes. “I’ve also decided to change it up and work with mixed media, including acrylics, pastel and charcoal. I enjoy using a lot of different mediums. It gives you the freedom to create almost anything. I even create my own pa40 GO LOCAL NOVEMBER 2019

pers, which I incorporate into some of my art,” Nadeau said. “I really don’t have a favorite subject. I like to try to let myself just do anything. For example, some artists just do portraits, but I don’t like to confine myself and enjoy the freedom to do anything whether it is flowers, animals or whatever,” she added. Nadeau recently participated in the Scantic River Artisans “Fall into Art” juried art show, held in October at the Hampden Senior Center. “I entered three of my paintings, all mixed media. One was of a horse that I named Tilly, another was a blue vase with white poppies, and I also entered a bear that I called Walter Gone Fishing,” she said. She also recently participated in the Monson Arts Council’s Fall Pop Up Exhibition, where she received two honorable mentions for her blue vase painting and for Tilly the horse. Nadeau is also keeping busy serving on the board of the Wilbraham Art League where she maintains its Facebook page. The Wilbraham Art League was established by a group of committed artists for the purpose of developing active community interest and providing education in the field of fine arts. General meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at the YMCA’s Senior Center at 45 Post Office Park off Boston Road in Wilbraham. Meetings start at 6:30 p.m. Most meetings include an art-oriented program and are open to interested nonmembers. The Wilbraham Art League welcomes all members, whether amateur or professional artist or just someone who appreciates art. Membership is not restricted to Wilbraham residents. Memberships are $25, $50 for families, and $10 for full-time students. The league has ongoing exhibits in Wilbraham at the Senior Center Meeting Room, Christ the King Lutheran Church, and Wilbraham Town Hall.

After all, there’s nothing like getting out in the crisp, cool or even frosty air to enjoy some exercise, the scenery and wildlife, some family or alone time, and even learn some local history along the way. Have fun exploring!

NORTHWEST PARK 145 Lang Road, Windsor, CT Northwest Park, in addition to 12 miles of hiking trails, offers an abundance of other activities on their 473 acres. Much of this former tobacco farmland situated on the Farmington River has reverted to biologically diverse forests, fields, and streams. Educational and recreational activities are offered all year long for people of all ages and abilities. While on the hiking trails, be on the lookout for beavers, herons, and other aquatic wildlife at Beaver Pond; check Rainbow Reservoir for wintering waterfowl; spot a red fox hunting mice in the fields; see a fossilized dinosaur footprint on the Triassic Trail; and compare the varieties of trees in the forest…oak, pine, hemlock, and mixed hardwood. After a snowfall, you can rent snowshoes or cross country skis and explore the trails in a different way. Also, “sugar season” at the park runs approximately from February through March, depending on weather conditions, when the 200 sugar maples are tapped and the sap is boiled down to syrup. Of course, the park offers a different type of experience when spring and summer roll around, with 60 nest boxes for Eastern Bluebirds, organic and butterfly gardens, and accessible paths through the Sensory Saunter and Braille Trail, along with other warm weather activities. SCANTIC RIVER STATE PARK: POWDER HOLLOW ENTRANCE

640 Hazard Avenue, Enfield, CT The Scantic River Linear Park encompasses 773 total acres surrounding the 41 mile long river. There are several entrances to the system of trails. The 1.9 mile out and back trail at the Powder Hollow entrance follows the scenic river, and offers a glimpse of the history of this area of Enfield. This walk is appropriate for all skill levels, and dogs are allowed on a leash. During the warmer months, you will see people fishing and cooling off in the shallow water, although the water quality is not always suitable for swimming. A water quality monitoring program is conducted during the summer months by the Scantic River Watershed Association, with test results posted on-line. Unique to this area, you will see remnants of the Hazard Powder Company, organized in 1845 by Colonel Augustus Hazard. The company manufactured gunpowder, and grew to become a million dollar business, with over 200 employees. It was a major supplier of gunpowder to both sides of the Civil War, and to others, as well. The 120 structures of the company, consisting of buildings such as mills, cooper shops, horse barns, offices, and storage sheds were spread out along the river valley in case of accidental explosions. Unfortunately, these explosions were frequent, ultimately resulting in 67 deaths, considered unusually safe for the 8

decades the company was in business. Today, remnants of water canals, metal control structures, chiseled brownstone blocks, and stonework for dams and foundations can be seen along the trail. You can also observe a wide variety of birds, with a greater diversity in the fall and spring. The Scantic is a very fishable stream, where you may catch sunfish, white perch, suckers, and an array of trout which are stocked in the spring, so bring your fishing gear along on your hike! The other entrances to the Park are the west entrance at 464 Hazard Avenue and the south entrance at 13-101 Bailey Road, all in Enfield. Other local hiking trails in Connecticut you may wish to explore further include Soapstone Mountain in Somers, Old New-Gate Wildlife Trail (which could include a visit to the prison during the summer months) in East Granby, and the Winsor Locks Canal Trail which runs through Suffield and Windsor Locks (check before going because it is closed off for the winter.)

Tom Summit house, at 1202 feet elevation, is still open to visitors to the summit. At various times in the 20th century, Mt. Tom was accessed by streetcar and by funicular railway to the summit house and an amusement “trolley” park. Today, access is restricted to autos and the abundant trail system.

SCANTIC RIVER PARK

MT. HOLYOKE RANGE STATE PARK Holyoke, MA Mt. Holyoke is crowned by the 1851 Summit House, which, at elevation 935 feet, offers some of the best scenic vistas available anywhere in Massachusetts. Although the original tramway has since been demolished, the 3000 acre park features over three dozen blazed trails, stretching for more than 30 miles for hiking and mountain biking in summer, and for cross country skiing and snowmobiling in winter. The park offers trails for hikers of all abilities.
