a note

FROM THE EDITOR . STEPHANIE TROMBLEY

I remember the nerves that danced in my stomach around this time each year as a child. Equipped with a brand new binder covered in pictures of my favorite musicians and dressed in the perfect outfit to make a good impression, I walked into the locker-lined halls of Springfield Public Schools each year ready for big changes. While I sometimes hid music magazines behind textbooks (I wasn’t too avid for math), back-to-school meant the most to me because I got to come back to journalism class. This was my silver lining to go back to school. While the ringing of the bell may cause groans from students, there’s always a good reason to be happy to find yourself back in the classroom. The new school year is a time of new beginnings, learning something about education and life you may not have known the year prior. Reminiscing about the scent of freshly sharpened pencils, brand new school clothes and decorating my binders always puts a smile on my face. One of my fondest memories is sitting on my living room floor with my sister, packing up our backpacks with new school supplies, discussing what the coming school year would bring. Though I am no longer a student, I have a feeling I’ll be stopping by to help her prepare her own backpack for nursing school. This is why I love autumn. It brings changes, whether from season to season, or semester to semester. It’s the calm after the wild summer days packed with vacations and road trips. We exchange packed schedules for the calm of studying and participating in relaxing activities. Soon, the familiar green environment that we have just adjusted to will burst with beauty in shades of red, yellow and orange. The leaves will decorate the ground we walk upon, and a symphony of crunches will follow under our footsteps. Lawn ornaments will be exchanged for bountiful pumpkins fresh from the patch, the aroma of toasty apple cider will warm our spirits and scarves will make an appearance from underneath packed away boxes. Yes, it is truly the season of transitions, and with that transition from sunny rays to autumn days, activities are abound. This month, Go Local happily welcomes South Windsor and West Springfield to our publication. With this warm welcome comes our cover story for September, Book Club Bookstore & More, the perfect place to find a book to pair with pumpkin spice coffee on a cool day. You won’t be disappointed after walking through their book arch. Main Street Deli invites us to an early Thanksgiving dinner in their welcoming dining room as they prepare to hit the road for the Big E fairgrounds this month. Golden Gavel Auctions shows us that great deals aren’t just found in big box stores. In fact, they show us why auctions are more fun and valuable. We explore Dr. Mark Levy’s Garden in Longmeadow and all of the wonders of this unique outdoor space and we visit Rustic Brewing Company, who serves up the ideal beer for any harvest event. As you prepare for the new school year, or even just for hayrides and pumpkin patches, remember to take a breath, and take in the beauty of what fall has to offer.

Artistic Landscape THE OUTDOOR WORLD OF DR. MARK LEVY

! G. MICHAEL DOBBS  TIFFANY GREENE

M

any people collect art, but few collect art in the manner of Dr. Mark Levy. The retired dentist and resident of Longmeadow simply does not buy just what he likes. He is his own curator and has created his own world at his home full of images that reflect the interests and passions of his life. He takes the sculptures that are so much part of his life and stages them in a way to create an environment both in and outside of his home that is unique and personal. It’s a personal gallery that is interactive and filled with multisensory delights. While Levy would not describe himself as an artist, he has the eye of one. On a walk around his home he points out a wooden sculpture. It’s a face emerging from a piece of driftwood. Levy recalled how he combined the two pieces – the face and the driftwood base – to create the image. Walking down his driveway, he shows me a wooden throne GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 11

carved out of a huge tree trunk. He explained the tree needed to come down and he asked the tree crew to leave enough of the trunk from which to create a chair. In the setting of his front garden, the chair looks almost supernatural as if some sort of forest king sat there. “You’ve not seen anything yet,” Levy said with a smile. He explained that as a young man starting in his career he collected sculpture when his budget allowed. The word “collecting” though doesn’t do justice to what he really has done. He has worked with art dealers and artists to create sculptures with personal meaning. In front of his house there is a wooden sculpture of a man emerging from a block of wood. The image, Levy explained, depicts the essence of a self-made man – someone who is creating his own self and reality. The figure is carving himself out of the block of wood. It’s a scene of birth and empowerment. He is clearly proud of his collaboration with the artist. He is also justifiably proud of a fence in the front of his house, which was custom made by artist Bruce Paul Fink. Fink, an acclaimed artist, cast the fence from steel and aluminum and is 65 feet long. Fink has a photo of it on his website. The fence has a meaning. On an inscribed plaque there is a message: “Although this magnificent fence was two years in the making, it was installed on Sept.11, 2001 moments before the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. We join the artist, Bruce Paul Fink, in dedicating this work of art as our personal memorial to those who died that day. The fence symbolizes the life affirming creative ability of mankind. It shows that from twisted metal and debris, life and beauty will emerge triumphant and that our country is indestructible. God bless America.” Levy’s front lawn gallery has moments of whimsy and sentiment with sculptures of children and one surprise. Out of what appears to be a culvert is an alligator. It’s actually life-like enough to be a tad startling. At the base of one sculpture is a bed of rocks forming the foundation. “Every stone was picked by me,” Levy noted. He led me to his backyard through a massive carved wooden gate. Towering at least 10 feet the gate is carved from a single root clump. Working with the staff of Asia Barong, an Asian art importer in Great Barrington, Levy found the gate and had it installed. The gate has images of wildlife and Balinese gods. It’s truly exotic. In the setting of Longmeadow, it has an almost surreal quality and reminded this writer of a prop that should be in an Indiana Jones movie. The gate acts as an introduction, much less just an entrance, to Levy’s main part of his sculpture garden: his backyard. Immediately one realizes there are multiple waterfalls that have been created – seven in total. The sound of running water is everywhere. That sound, when 12 GO LOCAL SEPTEMBER 2018

coupled with the high security fence that has plastic leaves woven into it, creates a separate environment. It’s easy to question where you are. Levy’s vision and hand are in everything you see. He explained his backyard, that has a steep hill, was a blank canvas for him to create his own world. “This is the place I love,” he said looking around. There is so much to look at; one doesn’t know where to start. In a tree there is a resting lion overlooking the yard. She acts as a silent sentinel. From out of a single tree trunk there is a wooden sculpture that is a column of fish. “I think it’s miraculous,” Levy said about the piece. He noted, “At night it’s a whole different world here. Everything is lit up.” There are sculptures on turntables, such as an eagle, that allow Levy to display and enjoy the entire image. It’s important to note that Levy has created this world for himself and his family. He has only opened it up once to the public as part of a fundraiser. It’s his refuge. And he doesn’t readily dispose of parts of his collection. He and his wife Sharon donated a sculpture of a rhinoceros several years ago to the Zoo in Forest Park. Taking me through another sculptured gate, Levy shows me another piece. Over the garage is another large sculpture created from a root cluster. This one is like a starburst with the face of a bearded man in the center. Levy said this represents him. Inside the home Levy shows the same personal touch and care in displaying sculptures there. A tall, almost life-size sculpture of an African hunter is seen with dried grasses he added to create a realistic tableau. The display base of another sculpture looks to be integrated with the artwork one would think it came with it. Levy explained it’s actually a wastebasket he found at a local store. It’s typical of his creative involvement with his collection. Levy is a man who pursues a sculpture once he has seen it. He pointed with pride to a three-foot tall Balinese sculpture. He said he and his wife saw it in a store with articles of clothing displayed on it. He immediately wanted it for his collection, but his wife said she doubted the storeowner would sell it. As they were leaving the store, he predicted the sculpture would beat them back to their hotel. He had successfully negotiated a price and delivery. After years of collecting, he is still looking and thinking. Photographer Mario Testino once wrote, “My favourite words are possibilities, opportunities and curiosity. I think if you are curious, you create opportunities, and then if you open the doors, you create possibilities.” Certainly Levy’s curiosity about art has allowed him to open doors to the possibility of creating his own world.

bout two years ago if you had told this trio of beer loving friends that they would be professional brewers, they probably wouldn’t have told you that prospect was nothing more than a pleasant daydream. But on a summer evening in 2018, Eric Paul, Jared Methe and Todd Kopiec are standing around a bar they built joking and reminiscing about how they ended up starting on the ground floor – literally – of their venture into brewery ownership. Rustic Brewing Company, a one-barrel nanobrewery in the basement of the Indian Orchard Mills, is the dream that became an unexpected reality. For Eric, Jared, and Todd, enjoying a craft beer at Paddy’s Irish Pub might be just as much fun as the weekday night hockey game they play beforehand. As the weekly ritual progressed and the three continued to share their enthusiasm for brewing, they decided to get together and start making their own. “We didn’t expect to do anything with it, honestly. It was just about us making good beer that we could drink,” admits Paul. After a year or so of developing and refining recipes and, yes, enjoying the fruits of their labor, the trio jumped at the opportunity to share their beer with an audience beyond their friends and family by entering a homebrew competition sponsored by 18 GO LOCAL SEPTEMBER 2018

RUSTIC BREWING CO. The Beer Shop in East Longmeadow. Bringing three IPAs and some high hopes, Rustic Brewing was entering the most competitive field in the competition. “Out of a little over 50 entries, I believe 26 or 27 of them were IPAs,” Todd recalls. Rustic Brewing nearly swept the competition judged primarily by a panel of local professional brewers, winning Best in Show and taking first and second place along with an honorable mention in the IPA category. The cherry on top was the People’s Choice award, chosen by popular vote. The men of Rustic were blown away. “That’s when it was kind of like, ‘Oh, maybe people like our beer!’” Jared laughs. After their double IPA called Toebreaker took fourth place out of 30 brewers at the homebrew contest at the The Worthy Fest in downtown Springfield and their lavender milkshake IPA called Lavenous won a charity Homebrew Showcase at Paddy’s Irish Pub later that year, along with the praise came the sense that maybe, just maybe, there was a chance for their hobby to be something more. Tucked away on the bottom floor of the Indian Orchard Mills, Rustic Brewing Company’s surroundings are humble, but wellcrafted. Greeting you at the bottom of the stairs is a large

wooden door with the Rustic logo emblazoned upon it. Inside, exposed brick, handcrafted wood and metal fittings abound. A simple wooden bar with chimney caps fashioned into light fixtures hanging from the ceiling above. To the left, another large Rustic logo hangs, this one illuminated. All done by hand by the three brewers, there is an authentic feel to the Rustic brewery. “This place, it has a certain feel to it that I think really goes along with the Rustic name,” Eric says while pointing out some of the features of the old mill property. “It’s a big part of why we chose this place.” It’s a small space, but it feels anything but cramped. The Rustic brewers admitted they would have loved to go bigger – “Who doesn’t want to just quit their day job and open a brewery?” quips Jared – but practicality trumped ambition. In their space at Indian Orchard Mills, there’s some room to grow, if that’s where fortune leads them. If they maintain their status as a nanobrewery, they’re fine with that too. “When we originally talked about making this a business, I think we were all kind of in the same boat. We were OK if we never became Tree House,” Jared explains. “If all we do is brew once a week on the one barrel system and we never grew past it, as long as people liked the beer, we’re OK with that, because that has always been the focus – just make good beer. The good thing about starting small is if we make a beer that isn’t up to our standards, we’re wasting one barrel of beer. We won’t put it out there. When you get into these huge spots and you have a beer that’s not good, but you still have to pay for all of those ingredients and everything, you’re probably going to release it. We want to make sure that we’re making quality beer first, and then giving people an awesome experience.” What is Rustic? It’s a question often asked of the three men of Rustic and one that doesn’t have a simple answer – what does it mean to be Rustic? “I racked my brain for that one,” says Eric, a designer who created the company’s brand and logo. “Thinking of what rustic means to me, it means something that’s old, simple in style, but lasts a

long time. So going back to the whole brewing process and beer, its core ingredients essentially haven’t changed. You have your grains, your water – hops kind of came about down the line – and yeast. To me, right there, that’s something that has lived on over time and still exists today. Where we are in that name, we’re trying to add depth to that. We are adding our own personal touch to something with a lot of history.” Especially for Eric, brewing tradition and history isn’t just an abstract concept. He has his own history that keeps him coming back to brew more. “I started brewing with my dad when I was about 8 or 9 and I was hooked back then,” he explains. “I loved the smell of the wort boiling on the stovetop back in the day of 5 gallon batches. My dad laughs now because his memory of me brewing with him was me always wafting the steam from the boiling wort towards my nose after adding hop additions. So for me, brewing is not only a passion of mine, but also a fond memory of my childhood.” Rustic brings their own touch to the ancient art of brewing primarily through crafting beers in the style of the extremely popular hazy New England IPAs and the emerging milkshake IPA (brewed with lactose to create a fuller, creamier body), as well as some stouts. “I think our milkshakes can stand out there with any other one that I’ve had,” boasts Jared. He’s not alone in that opinion. “We had a lot of people between The Worthy and the Whip City Brew Fest tell us how much they’ve enjoyed our beer. When we said we were in Indian Orchard, they tell us they live or work right by there and they can’t wait. The response has been really positive,” says Todd. In addition to strong community feedback, Rustic gained a big boost this past March when Hop Blind won a blind taste test hosted by the popular beer website Mass. Brew Bros., topping 19 other IPAs from breweries across the state. “We’re making quality beer and people are enjoying it. That’s most important to us,” Jared adds. “That’s what Rustic is all about.” GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 19

BOOKSTORE

F

or bookworms, there’s nothing like the feeling of stepping into a room lined wall to wall with novels, and knowing there are thousands of adventures to get lost in at your fingertips. While reading a great book is a blast on your own, finding a community of others who share your hobby and are equally as excited about books can make the reading experience that much more fun. Book Club Bookstore & More set out to capture just that, bringing the magic of a library and the joy of a book club to a plaza settled in the heart of South Windsor. Book Club started nearly half a decade ago in the town of Broad Brook when Cynde Acanto turned a long time dream into reality. “I was drawn to books since I was a child. I was always a reader, my parents were readers. In my adult life, I started hosting book clubs and I always said if I ever made a career change, I’d open a book store and I’d call it Book Club. Finally, after being in retail management for 25 years, the opportunity arose and I seized it.” Now, as the store nears its five year anniversary in November, many exciting changes have occurred, but the love for books that helped build the business stays the same. Book Club will celebrate its birthday during Shop Small Business Saturday, a calm after the storm of Black Friday shopping. After three years of being located in East Windsor, Cynde was happy to find a location available in South Windsor, where she and her family reside. Owning a small business is no easy task, but Cynde was armed with a passion for reading and the knowledge to be successful. “I definitely had background experience. You have to love what you do. You have GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 23

to be self-motivated every day and have to wear all the hats. You have to do it all.” What has truly made Book Club a dream come true for Cynde is her continued love for reading. “The beautiful thing about books is that they can transport you anywhere. And you can learn things that you never would have been exposed to. I love to read nonfiction and read about other people’s lives in memoirs. Historical fiction will always teach you something in history you were never taught in school. Then you can fall down the rabbit hole and research it more if you’re interested. Great fiction can entertain you, it can scare you, it can make you cry, it can make you laugh. I just love the power of the written word.” Upon entering Book Club, the room is filled with delights to bring joy to any reader. Tables displaying featured South Windsor authors, suggested titles and great gifts like an Edgar Allan Poe mug make for the ideal place to get lost in. The possibilities for adventure are endless. Book Club is not limited to the sale of books and gifts. Book Club hosts several genres of book clubs including Weekday, Stephen King, Marcia Clark and Chat & Chew. There is truly something for everyone. And if there isn’t something just right for you, Cynde is always open to suggestions! While the books lining the walls of the shop are eye-catching, it’s impossible to miss the book arch that greets you at the doorway of the store. The arch is made of several books stacked securely 24 GO LOCAL SEPTEMBER 2018

together, acting as the center of the store. “When we were moving our store from Broad Brook to South Windsor, I was at home working on the computer and I got an email through our store’s website and it said ‘We have this book arch, and we’re looking for a home for it.’ They didn’t send a picture or anything and I just said ‘We’ll take it’ because…book arch? It had to be great.” A couple who were recently married and avid readers had the arch built for their wedding. After the nuptials took place, they did what all book fans do and refused to waste the many novels. Cynde happily accepted the offer, and with the help of her husband, the arch found a new home. It has become quite famous in its time with the shop, even being pictured on Atlas Obscura’s list of “62 of the World’s Best Independent Bookstores” in April 2018. As Cynde shared, “It’s really the heart of the bookstore.” Book Club supports local authors and artisans alike within the shop, allowing a platform for writers and small businesses to display their work. Many of the gifts featured are made in Connecticut. Local greeting cards, handmade jewelry, literary-themed gifts and handmade rustic signs are offered at Book Club. Cynde makes sure that each product sees success in the shop by not offering competing products. For example, if there is a jewelry vendor featured in the store, they will be the only one. In December, Book Club hosts a pop-up shop, showcasing authors and artisans in-store. Cynde has even dedicated an entire bookcase exclusively to Connecticut authors. As Cynde explained, “Now that the store is more established, authors will reach out. They can submit an inquiry form on our website and tell us about their book and if they want us to carry it or if they want to appear here for an author event. Something that really sets apart independent book stores and keeps them thriving is offering events and experiences that you can’t get at a big box store or online. If you get the chance to meet your favorite author or an author you never knew about, that’s such a special experience.” And what a special experience being a part of Book Club is. Book Club is more than just a business; it is a community of authors, readers and artists alike. It holds a charm that only a local community can, and Cynde is happy to be local. “It’s the connections you get to make with your customers and that you get to see them frequently. I wanted to call the store Book Club because I wanted it to have a club feel, where people came in and felt like they were part of the club. And now I see my customers forming friendships, and communicating outside of the store. I love that connection and putting people together. It’s getting involved and being involved with your community.” Cynde is also known for taking her love for reading beyond the shop. Once a month, for the past four years, she visits the senior center in East Windsor to host a book club. Even if reading is not your cup of tea, or you’re stuck in a reading rut, Cynde recommends that you stop by Book Club. “If someone comes in and they don’t know what they want to read, I love to GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 25

recommend a book for them. Or if they say ‘Oh, I don’t like to read’ then I’ll say ‘Maybe you’ll want to come to a workshop and learn a new skill.’” Book Club is fun for everyone. As Book Club celebrates five years, the business continues to grow each day. “We always try to move forward. To bring in even more high caliber authors for events like Best-Selling Authors. We are working on being able to order through our website. It’s about expansion of what we can offer our customers, so we are planning more book club and author events.” In September, Book Club will host New York Times Bestselling Author Kimberly McCreight, author of The Outliers series. She has been featured at the store for each of her books in the series, and has celebrated great success with her novels. Lionsgate Films has purchased the rights to the series in order to film a movie adaption through HBO Films, and will star Nicole Kidman. Lionsgate is known for also making film adaptations of the popular Hunger Games book series. Cynde happily shared, “She’s lovely and we are always excited to host her.” No matter Book Club Bookstore’s next chapter, it’s clear Cynde is making the business’s story an adventure. S

eptember is here, and with the start of autumn comes a New England event that brings guests of all ages and neighborhoods together. The Big E, an iconic fair that takes place annually at the Big E Fairgrounds in West Springfield, Massachusetts, is the place to be for food lovers from states near and far. For over 100 years, dozens of new food items have been introduced to hungry crowds, often ranging from the classic cotton candy to eccentric cuisine such as a burger with a donut bun. The 2018 fair is no exception. Main Street Deli, a local restaurant owned by the Locke family of Agawam, Massachusetts, will be taking one of their hit sandwiches on the road. Happily married couple, Joanne and Frank Locke Jr, with the help of their son Michael and a cheerful staff, have built a one-of-a-kind business that makes every night at Main Street Deli feel like an evening at the family dinner table. With offerings such as homemade macaroni and cheese, wholesome allergen-free salads, decadent desserts, and wings tossed in over 22 flavors of sauces created by Michael, there’s a meal sure to delight every member of the family who joins Main Street Deli for dinner. Starting in a “postage stamp” location in 2006, the family’s dream grew, and so did their location. In 2009, they transformed a historical 1863 carriage house into a welcoming restaurant. Now, over twelve years later, Main Street Deli cooks up meals and caters just about any event you can think of.

32 GO LOCAL SEPTEMBER 2018

When Joanne first stepped into the carriage house, she saw the future of her beloved business. “I saw it as casual, comfortable, and like walking into my home” she shared. Her vision has developed into reality, with warm lighting, delicious aromas in the air and an ambiance of sitting at an open table of family and friends. The decor in each area of the house blends the antique feel of the 1800s home with a modern day dining room, making each visit a heartfelt experience. Soon after the end of last year’s fair, Main Street Deli interviewed with Big E officials and are now being welcomed to the Avenue of States for 2018. The Avenue of States is known for its buildings lining a long street representing the New England states. Where else can someone try Maine blueberries, Vermont maple candy, and Massachusetts cider donuts all in one day? Inside of the Massachusetts state building, fairgoers will find the “Pilgrim”, a Main Street Deli original sandwich. The sandwich is a classic on the Main Street Deli menu, holding a place as one of the first items to be featured on their original menu. As described best by the owners: “The Pilgrim sandwich is a traditional Thanksgiving meal. We will be using real roasted turkey meat, homemade stuffing, cranberry sauce, and gravy in a crusty soft centered ciabatta roll.” While new and different foods are the name of the game at the Big E, astounding portion sizes are just as important. Adapting to this expectation, Main Street Deli will be taking their sandwich from a single serving to a 2-foot long sub. While it can be purchased whole, half sandwiches will also be offered for those saving room! If that’s not enough to make your mouth water, the restaurant will also be serving several other Massachusetts-native snacks. Keeping their offerings local, Main Street Deli will be serving drinks from Polar, based out of Worcester. Cape Cod brand chips will be served with Kettle Cuisine of Lynn’s soup. Hanson’s Ocean Spray cranberry sauce can be found on the Pilgrim paired with fresh turkey from Outpost Farm of Holliston. Coupling fresh with local is sure to create a dining experience perfect for not only the Big E, but for a wildly successful business.

The Big E has always played a small part in the business of Main Street Deli. While the Big E is known for food, it’s also known by locals for bringing in crowds in droves, often leading to traffic. Being just one exit away from the Big E has led Main Street Deli to close on weekends during the fair, as it is more difficult to reach the location during the peak fair times. This year, as Joanne said, the Locke family decided “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em!” The business will not be on the outside parameters of the event, but right on the grounds, allowing faithful customers and newcomers to enjoy a favorite all fair long. Main Street Deli is all about homegrown taste, and that means cutting no corners. The meats used in their meals are sliced fresh, including corned beef that is made every day. Apples are hand peeled and never from a can when making Cousin Linda’s special apple crisp recipe, and each hot dish is cooked on the spot. When one batch runs out, a new pan hits the oven, sizzling and ready for patrons to enjoy down to the last bite. The Big E is also known for being the kickoff to the Harvest season, and Main Street Deli will be bringing that same tone to the fair at their booth. As described by the Locke family, “One of my family’s favorite holidays is Thanksgiving. It is a time when Massachusetts’ history, family, and traditional food favorites come together. This theme will be the essence of our booth-from a first Thanksgiving picture design on our banner, to the color scheme of deep burgundy, crimson orange, and golden yellow, to the smell of turkey roasting in the oven, and finally to all the delicious tastes of the season.” Can’t wait for the Big E to begin to try some of Main Street Deli’s incredible foods? Joanne recommends a few of her favorites, including Mike’s Big Salad, the Turkey Apple, or their Apple Crisp. Main Street Deli is located at 141 Main Street in Agawam, Massachusetts. Don’t forget to stop by the Big E from September 14-30 at the Big E Fairgrounds in West Springfield, Massachusetts, to taste a sandwich Massachusetts residents and neighbors alike are sure to be thankful for. Drop by rounded teaspoonful, two inches apart, on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until light golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheet to cooling rack. “S LD!” at GOLDEN GAVEL ! STEPHANIE TROMBLEY  LEO PILARES

While driving down North Road into East Windsor, Connecticut, one may see businesses such as a coffee shop, an Italian restaurant and a cell phone store. But one business truly stands out and draws the attention of those passing by. A large sign located just outside of a huge parking lot reads “Golden Gavel Auctions.” The curiosity of what wonders may be held inside is enticing. You never know what items will be found at the auctions next, and you may find a true treasure. While television programs featuring auctions can be found on numerous networks, some may wonder what they are really like. They are about the fast-paced, thrilling environment. Just take a look inside during one of their weekly auctions. A snack bar filled with delicious snacks will give you the fuel to bid away. Large television screens decorate the location, making it easier to see what antiques are currently being featured to visitors. The auction hall, which can seat over 350 guests, is filled with a big crowd waiting in anticipation to see which item auctioneer 42 GO LOCAL SEPTEMBER 2018

Ralph Labozzo will shout out bids for next. This is what drives Golden Gavel Auctions, owned by auctioneer and appraiser Patrick Soucy. Building on a passion for antiques starting at the young age of thirteen, Patrick has brought antiques to the Connecticut area for decades. Finding its permanent home in a renovated former grocery store in 2004, the location has become a bountiful spot for auction attendees. With the help of a dedicated staff, Golden Gavel comes alive each week. While most teenagers were enjoying typical leisure activities, Patrick found joy in selling antiques and household items as well as learning all about them. He opened his first antique business when he turned eighteen. Gaining field experience while consecutively educating himself toward his profession, Patrick is certainly an expert, graduating from the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering. Patrick is also a member of the National Auctioneers Association and of the Certified Appraisers Guild of America. Adding a certification as a USPAP appraiser, Patrick has the know-how and dedication to the business that

makes Golden Gavel Auctions flourish. Teaming up with Patrick is auctioneer, appraiser and USPAP certified appraiser Ralph Labozzo, who brings over 20 years of experience to Golden Gavel. Each week, he ensures all auction goers have a great experience. With education including a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Connecticut, graduate from Missouri Auction School, and a certification in American Arts at New York Sotheby’s Institute of Art, you can be sure you’re in good hands both when selling and buying at Golden Gavel Auctions. There are several opportunities to purchase treasures at Golden Gavel. Golden Gavel holds 70 auctions annually. Their 18,000 square foot auction house is necessary for the numerous items that go to auction each week. Golden Gavel has auctioned items such as furniture, medical equipment, video games and accessories, coins, jewelry and comic books. The possibilities are endless for avid collectors and newcomers alike. While auctions can seem to be an intimidating experience, the public is welcome to join Golden Gavel during any of their GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 43

auctions. Held at 7pm every Thursday, it doesn’t matter if attendants have years of experience or are just curious, it can be a thrilling time for all! You don’t have to dive right in at 7pm, Golden Gavel opens its doors for a preview at 2pm weekly, offering guests the chance to observe each item that will be auctioned that day. Guests can hold items as well as speak to the helpful staff about each item’s value, including Patrick and Ralph. Often, there are also additional experts on site who are available to ask questions to. You’ll never feel like you don’t understand your purchase with their help. Golden Gavel is the perfect place to find a deal. For example, if you’re looking for some new furniture, items such as dining room tables and chairs can auction for less than half of their retail value, making it the ideal place to stop before heading for the home store. Once the auction begins at 7pm, it can be a high-energy event. Ralph shouts the bids seamlessly, raising the energy of the room. Often, between 80 and 100 items are sold per hour. This makes the preview useful, so you don’t miss out on an item you may desire by thinking about potential quality or pricing. By the end of the evening most, if not all, of what can be 100 items depending on the auction, will be cleared from the property. Golden Gavel offers unique ways for bidders to make an offer. The standard is to physically visit the auction house during the auction, but bids can also be place via phone or on the internet during one of their quarterly auctions. Bidders may also bring written bids on auction day during the early preview. There are no limits to how patrons can win the item of their choosing! Golden Gavel also offers their services to assist in selling items.

44 GO LOCAL SEPTEMBER 2018

They have a dedicated staff that packs, moves and sweeps houses and estates. They will provide you with a written appraisal and sell your items during one of their numerous auctions. No matter what you’re looking to sell, Golden Gavel has you covered. They personally move all “for sale” items back to the auction house, making it easy for sellers to clear their properties. While Patrick and the staff at Golden Gavel Auctions are passionate about antiques and auctions, they also dedicate their services to several charities. Annually, between 10-14 charity sales are held. This dedication was recognized this year by the East Windsor Chamber of Commerce when they named Golden Gavel Auctions the 2018 East Windsor Business of the Year. During the East Windsor Chamber of Commerce’s 22nd Annual Meeting held at Elizabeth’s Bar and Restaurant, Patrick was presented with the award by East Windsor Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Jimbo Richards. He also accepted a Proclamation from the State of Connecticut presented by State Representative Christopher Davis. The award was well-deserved, as Patrick gave a speech about the importance of helping charity as a business. Are you curious to see what’s in store at Golden Gavel Auctions? Just stop on by, you’ll be sure to have an experience that’s good as gold! Newcomer or experienced attendant, there’s fun in store for everyone. While auctions can be visited every week, Golden Gavel can also be found on Facebook at www.facebook.com/golden.gavel, where they frequently post photos of items up for grabs, or by visiting www.goldengavel.com. Golden Gavel Auctions is located at 149 North Rd, Route 140, East Windsor, Connecticut.
