OLD STURBRIDGE VILLAGE

Ever wonder what it would have been like to celebrate Christmas in much simpler times before the hustle and bustle surrounding today’s holiday? Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) is inviting visitors in December to step into the past and learn more about New England holiday traditions of the 19th century and today during its “Christmas by Candlelight” celebration.

A NOTE

FROM THE EXECUTIVE EDITOR . PAYTON NORTH

Do you smell that? The scent of Fraser fir tree needles that are soft to the touch, hot mulled cider with fresh apples from a local orchard and spiced gingerbread cookies – perfect for dunking in delicious hot coffee – is wafting through the air. Well, maybe it is not the scent of a real tree, or fresh cookies and cider, it’s actually the scent of a Yankee Candle. But hey – the holidays can be stressful. I’m not denigrating however you get into the spirit of the season. You don’t need a real tree or to bake homemade cookies to do it. It’s a running joke in my family, friend group and coworkers that I celebrate Christmas from Nov. 1 – Dec. 31, minus two or three days in November (usually the days surrounding Thanksgiving.) I have a friend who every year on November 1 wishes me Merry Christmas. After all the neighborhood children have been tucked into bed on Halloween and we’ve passed out all our candy, I have an exciting night of my own, where I tear down all the Halloween decorations and replace them immediately with tinsel, evergreen and warm lights. Is it excessive? Too early? Am I not letting Thanksgiving have its moment? Sure – probably. But to me, 25 days is not enough time to get into the holiday spirit. And as I grow older and older, the season goes by faster and faster. Parties to attend, parties to host. Deadlines to meet. Gifts to buy, gifts to wrap. Squishing that all into 25 days is too stressful and takes the joy that I find in the giving season away. At this time last year, I had just taken over the Executive Editor role at Reminder Publishing. When Thanksgiving rolled around, I uncharacteristically had not given Christmas much thought. Instant stress because that also meant I had not bought a single gift. I think I made it all the way until Dec. 7 avoiding purchasing anything because I was too overwhelmed, until I panic purchased numerous gifts online. (Not to worry – many of the gifts I bought online were from local small businesses.) This year, I vowed I would not do that to myself. I went on vacation in early November and bought a gift for my mothers stocking. She’s reading this column right now wondering what on earth I could have possibly bought for her in Florida. Promptly upon my return, I ordered a few other gifts I had in mind for my Dad, my brothers girlfriend and my boyfriend. A tip for those of us who like to plan: all year I keep a note on my phone that has a running list of gift ideas for people in my life. It’s May and my brother has lost his keys for the second time in less than a week? Sounds like he could use AirTag trackers. Add it to the list. My friend offhand mentions how much she loves Christmas villages and that this year she wants to start one of her own? Looks like I can get her a village building. Add it to the list. When Lauren LeBel and I started to think about features for the December edition of Go Local months ago, the first story I mentioned to her that I knew I wanted us to do was Sturbridge Village’s Christmas by Candlelight celebration. I attended a few years ago with a group of friends, and it was magical. We bundled up, saw intricate gingerbread houses that were on display, watched horse drawn carriages give rides around the village, made metal “ornaments,” at one of the shops and admired the decorations on the historical homes. It was exactly what I needed to feel the warmth of the season. This holiday season, I’m looking forward to attending a play at Ludlow’s Exit 7 Players – “White Christmas,” gathering with friends at a “Holiday Hoobie Whatty?” party (if you are a Jim Carrey Grinch fan, you will know that reference,) and baking our family Christmas cookie recipes with my mom and grandma. In a time that can draw our attention to excessive stress and consumerism, however you celebrate, I hope you are able to remember and experience what this season is all about: joy, love, kindness and compassion. Thank you to our readers for faithfully picking up our publications every week, month and year – and to our advertisers for supporting us and recognizing the value of community news. I wish you all a happy holiday, and a beautiful new year. Thank you for reading, -Payton North, Executive Editor 6 GO LOCAL DECEMBER 2023

DiFiore RAVIOLI SHOP

T

he holidays are special times when people get together at social gatherings, however with the demands of everyday life there may not be time to cook a festive meal. The DiFiore Ravioli Shop in Ellington, Connecticut is a great option, offering a family owned and operated Italian specialty food store with variety of ravioli, fresh pastas, sauces, and prepared foods all made in house. Current owner Don DiFiore’s parents, Andy and Louise, started this business 41 years ago when they were 62 years old. Originally, DiFiore was in the restaurant business as a chef. Then he opened a restaurant with his wife Colleen which was adjacent to his parents’ business when it was located on 395 Franklin Ave., synonymous with Hartford’s Little Italy section from 1987-1997. DiFiore had a couple other restaurant ventures, but eventually got out of the restaurant industry. He went into contracting and tried to specialize in designing and building restaurants and bar spaces. When his parents grew older, his siblings looked to him to take hold of the store to keep it open. He and his son Daniel took over the business in 2010. Daniel has since gone on to open his own business, and DiFiore is now joined by his wife full-time in the Ellington store. GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 9

“It has come full circle to where my parents started a real mom and pop shop,” DiFiore mentioned. “They thought it was going to be this little retirement business for them, but they stayed with it until they were gone. They were just about 90 when I took over the business. They were thrilled to see that the family was taking over the business rather than closing it.” DiFiore said, “The cheese ravioli will always be the number one selling item in the store, but what runs a close second is chicken cutlets. We sell a lot of chicken cutlets. Everybody loves chicken cutlets.” He went on to say, “During the holiday season, our catering business is off the charts. There are lines outside to get in and our volume quadrupled in the last couple of weeks in December. People get lasagna, stuffed shells, manicotti, sausage and peppers, a pretty good variety.” Michael Leister from Wethersfield has known the DiFiores since they had a shop in Hartford, then Rocky Hill and now Ellington. He explained he loved their stores for freshness and quality. “Any of their freshly made pastas are delicious,” Leister said. “Nothing like their fresh pasta and delicious sauces.” His favorite pre-made dish is the mini ricotta raviolis with lobster and lobster sauce for a special occasion. For the holidays, it’s their butternut 10 GO LOCAL DECEMBER 2023

squash macaroni and cheese and their pumpkin ravioli. “Just to have a specialty store like this in Ellington is so good,” Leister responded. “Love to make the trip there for getting their fresh and delicious pastas and desserts.” Tina Chokas from Tolland loves that she can grab a quick, homemade meal without having to cook it. The store reminds her of the Italian shops and markets she grew up with. Chokas explained she and her family love getting chicken and eggplant cutlets with a side of sauce and sliced mozzarella. They heat it up in the oven and have a great meal. Her husband loves their cold orzo side dish, and her children love the pizza. For the holidays, she’ll be getting the chicken Parm or lasagna. “There aren’t many Italian shops or markets nearby,” Chokas replied. “I love being able to provide a taste of my upbringing, and I don’t always have the time to cook it myself.” Lindsey Brazalovich from Stafford Springs is a business owner and restocks her store setup at Johnny AppleSeeds down the street and always stops at the pasta shop on her way home to get some goodies for her family. “We love the mini raviolinis for the kids, and I love their Chicken Francaise,” said Brazalovich. “Also, any excuse to buy fresh raviolis, my favorite sauce is their creamy pesto sauce and I love that they also have roasted garlic bulbs

for sale too. I eat them as a car snack.” She explained she would get their lasagna, mac n cheese or any chicken entree, Marsala, Francaise or Parmigiana for a holiday. “It’s so important to have a shop like DiFiore’s because they make it easy to put together a dinner on the go,” Brazalovich pointed out. “They cater to holiday needs, they’re a local small business that treats you like family, and the freshness of the food is unmatched in the area.” Right now, DiFiore’s focus is keeping the store running efficiently and busy. He wants to expand their wholesale business and they’re opening a new manufacturing facility in Ellington. “When people come in and compliment us, it’s rewarding,” said DiFiore. “For my parents, in their memory, knowing that we kept the business going is also rewarding. It’s an old family business and it’s nice to keep it alive.” DIFIORE RAVIOLI SHOP IS LOCATED AT 287 SOMERS RD. THEY’RE OPEN 10 A.M. - 7 P.M. TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY AND 10 A.M. - 5 P.M. ON SUNDAYS. rowing up, Chris Bugbee was always interested in the newest classic rock album. It all started with a KISS vinyl record. Then, as he got older, it was cassettes, then CDs. Then, years later, it was all about the vinyl once again. Bugbee owns CBug’s Records, a shop in the Vintage Shops in East Windsor, Connecticut that he opened nearly three years ago, two weeks before the COVID shutdown. Although having to temporarily stop a business that barely started was discouraging, Bugbee made the most of the opportunities that came with COVID. “I was able to receive a grant from the city and I’m still here today,” he said. In fact, CBug’s has expanded from a 600-foot space to 1,200-feet in the past three years. GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 15

“I could expand more but there isn’t enough space,” he said. Bugbee has always enjoyed listening to music but it was a stop at a flea market that spun him back into records. “I was out with my kids, who were 5 and 7 then, on a Sunday looking for something to do and we went to a flea market,” Bugbee recalled. “There was someone selling records and I bought one and started from there.” Bugbee continued collecting vinyl for personal use and decided to try selling records when he kept finding duplicates while hunting for new vinyl. “I always said if I had the opportunity to do this as a business I’d go for it,” he said. Bugbee was an English teacher for 20 years and decided to take a risk and do something different. “It was time,” he said. Bugbee has no regrets and enjoys teaching still, but it’s the school of rock that he now shares with young people. “I get a lot of young customers,” he said. Many know what they’re looking for but some look to Bugbee for direction, including his own niece who is featured in CBug’s weekly video. “She is 21 and knows nothing about music, so I’m teaching her,” said Bugbee. Most of CBug’s customers are collectors and often looking for the classic rock records that Bugbee favors, but some are looking to expand their horizons. 16 GO LOCAL DECEMBER 2023

“Most of what I sell are pre-owned older records but I do carry some brand new ones,” he said. Bugbee said although classic rock and blues are his jam, his teenage children have introduced him to some newer artists that he can appreciate. “I think a lot of today’s music is trash — I hate auto tune — there are some that I do like.” Bugbee has a social media intern who helps post videos on CBug’s Instagram, Tik-Tok and Facebook accounts and his girlfriend, Laura Nardone, helped with the creation of the CBug’s website. “People can now buy online,” Bugbee said. In addition to thousands of vinyls, CBug’s also has cassette tapes and CDs, which Bugbee said are slowly rising in popularity. “Now that cars don’t have cassette or CD players, it’s become nostalgic to buy them,” he said. Bugbee said in addition to online shopping, customers can shop in the store at 42 Bridge St., East Windsor, Connecticut Tuesday - Sunday, 12-5 p.m. He added he is having a sale ahead of the holidays on Dec. 9-10 when the entire shop will be 20% off. “We will be putting out about 1,000 new records that week,” he said. Old Sturbridge Village

E

ver wonder what it would have been like to celebrate Christmas in much simpler times before the hustle and bustle surrounding today’s holi-

day? Old Sturbridge Village (OSV) is inviting visitors in December to step into the past and learn more about New England holiday traditions of the 19th century and today during its “Christmas by Candlelight” celebration. “Christmas by Candlelight has seen several iterations over the course of a decade or more and started as a way to attract visitors at a typically quiet time of the year. Museum staff saw an opportunity to use the space to teach about the historic aspects of Christmas. Recently it has evolved into a campus-wide event that family and friends look forward to as a tradition each year,” said Christine Freitas, director of communications and content for OSV. The largest outdoor history museum in the Northeast, OSV depicts a rural New England town of the 1830s with more than 40 original buildings to step into including homes, meetinghouses, district school, country store, bank, working farm, three water-powered mills, and trade shops — all situated on more than 200 scenic

acres. Each historical home is adorned for the season inside and out, including 2,000 yards of real pine garland. Christmas by Candlelight — for which OSV staff plan year-round for what officials say is a visitor-favorite event — is a “romantic” depiction of what the holiday might have been like back in the 1830s, the timeline represented by Old Sturbridge Village. “Most New Englanders in the 1830s were not celebrating Christmas. We do see some historical references to ministers making note of it in their sermons, as well as writings in some people’s diaries about the day. But all that we think of in terms of celebrating Christmas from its big feasts, family gatherings, and many of the popular traditions of today were simply not the norm yet,” said Rhys Simmons, director of interpretation at OSV, about Christmas which wasn’t an official state holiday in Massachusetts until 1856 and only declared a federal holiday in 1870. “For Christmas by Candlelight we take our unique historical setting and transform it into a Christmas village. We paint a broader brush that just a normal visit to our museum by going beyond the boundaries of New England and the 1830s. Taking that liberty allows us to GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 21

educate visitors about the history of today’s popular traditions including such things as where Christmas trees originated, ornaments, decorations, songs and so much more,” he added. There is good reason for naming the annual event Christmas by Candlelight — electrical service to most American homes didn’t begin until the late 1890s. The illuminated evening with its more than 4,000 candles in tin lanterns comes to life with a lighting ceremony every night at 4:30 p.m. The lights are warm, welcoming and wonderful. “Guest can also wander our Christmas Tree Trail with some 50 cut trees delivered to the Village for Christmas by Candlelight that encircle our mill pond whose soft lights reflect off of the water. The nature path for all to enjoy also includes a covered bridge that we call our Christmas Wish Bridge. We have a table there with paper ornaments and encourage kids to write a wish on them and hang them on the surrounding Christmas trees,” Simmons said. Dedicated history buffs who want to set the tone for their holiday visit might want to begin their tour by heading to the Salem Towne House, suggests Jean Contino, program coordinator for OSV, where Christmas traditions of the past can be viewed. “We offer a little tour of Christmas traditions of the past in each of the three parlors of the Towne House, where visitors can view Christmas décor from the 1830s, 1850s and 1870s. The first room takes you back to Cambridge in 1832 when Charles Follen, a Harvard 22 GO LOCAL DECEMBER 2023

professor who was born in Germany where the origins of Christmas trees began, introduced the first one in New England. We know this because Harriet Martineau, a journalist who attended Follen’s Christmas party while visiting Boston, recounted seeing his small tabletop tree in her book ‘Retrospect of Western Travel’ from 1838,” Contino said. “Back then the tree would have been decorated naturally with nuts, fruits, paper cornucopia and lighted candles. There would also be a bucket of water nearby with a long stick to which a sponge would have been attached in case of fire. The tradition back then would have been to close the doors to the parlor while decorating the tree and lighting the candles, then opening them to surprise the children,” she added. In the next parlor representing the 1850s, Contino said by that time more families were becoming familiar with some traditions of Christmas. Even if they didn’t celebrate the holiday themselves, Contino said families might have attended a Christmas party at someone’s house where gifts would be exchanged, especially for the children, but not necessarily for all of the adults. The Christmas tree would still be on a tabletop, but now you would see little glass ornaments from Germany that looked like icicles hanging on the tree. There would also be more live greens and garlands decorating the rooms. By the time visitors reach the 1870’s parlor, larger celebrations were becoming more popular. “We are fortunate to have illustrations done by Lucy Ellen Merrill for a small book of Christmas poetry that

can be seen at the Museum of Old Newbury. In bringing this room alive, we went directly from her illustrations. Visitors will now see a full-size tree that might have oranges, stars, glass ornaments, small toys and candles. In 1876, the country was celebrating its centennial and American flags might often be added to the tree. The parlor has more greenery in the room as people began to decorate beyond just a tree, such as greenery around the cupboard and inside of it. You will also notice a more elaborate horseshoe-shaped boxwood decoration on the wall with the words, ‘God Bless Everyone, Happy Christmas,’ in gold letters glued onto it. And, you will see a table set in the parlor for a Christmas evening meal for the adults and stacks of little gifts on the table at each place setting,” Contino said. Simmons noted music is a “key part of the experience at Christmas by Candlelight.” The sounds of the season ring throughout the Village with historical musical performances including costumed historians playing various instruments each night in several locations. The OSV singers also perform Sundays. Village favorites can be heard such as “Up on the Housetop” and other festive holiday tunes that were written in New England in the 1800s. In addition, there are also different modern-day musical acts performing historical and folk music onthe-hour every evening in the Center Meetinghouse. For even more fun, “The Magic of Bob Olsen,” a visitor favorite, is back this year for several shows in the Dennsion Building. And, you can also climb aboard the horse-drawn carryall for a ride around the Village Com-

mon. During the Victorian era, whose earliest days coincide with the OSV timeline, telling ghost stories together was a century-old Christmas Eve tradition during the dark, long, cold winter nights. But, tales of the season told in several locations throughout the Village won’t include the supernatural. There will be stories for all ages, including readings in the Friends Meetinghouse of “The Nativity Gospel of Saint Luke” and “The Nativity Gospel of Saint Matthew,” perfect for listening to before viewing a nearby 50-piece nativity set created by a former OSV employee. Classic Christmas stories, especially for younger visitors, will be spun including “The Night Before Christmas,” “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” alongside English and Spanish readings of “Un Cocqui de Boriquen,” a Puerto Rican children’s story. The households throughout the Village will feature various traditional craft demonstrations including making woolen ornaments and pottery, knitting Christmas stockings, baking cakes, punching tin lanterns, and many others. Visitors can sample mulled cider and Polish gingerbread and see other holiday treats being made, as well as partake in their own craft making at various stations throughout OSV. Candle dipping is also available for an additional fee. And, speaking of gingerbread, the annual Gingerbread House Contest is a popular feature of the holiday season at OSV with entries displayed during Christmas by Candlelight. The trip back in time, however, isn’t completely devoid GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 23

of commercialism. For those looking for something different to gift friends and family, a unique shopping experience awaits visitors. Shoppers will find handcrafted holiday items in the Miner Grant Store and the Ox & Yoke Mercantile including craft kits, books, clothing, bath and body supplies, and Village-made ware such as punch tin lanterns and redware mugs along with a mulling iron to heat up your drink that gives it a “different, unique taste,” Simmons noted. Of course, it wouldn’t be a celebration of the festive holiday without Santa Claus, not the modern Coca-Cola inspired Santa, but a more Victorian depiction of the jolly ol’ elf. He will make an appearance each night at his workshop on Gallery Row for all good little boys and girls to tell him their special Christmas wishes. Model trains — for years a popular children’s gift placed under the tree by Santa — are synonymous with Christmas and kids. Next door to St. Nicholas in the David Wight Community Gallery, the Worcester Model Rail Roaders has set up a few Holiday Express model train layouts. They will be onsite to talk about their displays and answer questions about their beloved hobby. Visitors strolling from building to building during Christmas by Candlelight may develop quite an appetite and will have many options to satisfy their cravings. The Bullard Tavern Café and Patio or Ox & Yoke Café offer warming soups on a chilly night, hot and cold sandwiches, pastries, seasonal desserts such as cider donuts, frosted cookies, and breast putting, as well as hot and cold beverages and beer, wine and specialty cocktails for those old enough to imbibe. Concession stands are also located in the Village’s Countryside and on the Common. CHRISTMAS BY CANDLELIGHT WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE FOLLOWING DATES IN DECEMBER: 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16, 17, 22, 23, 27, 28, 29 AND 30 FROM 2-8 P.M. Somersvillage Gifts & Gourmet

Baskets

f you happen to be in Somers, Connecticut in search of a special gift this holiday season, then try Somersvillage Gifts & Gourmet Baskets (SGGB) on 111 Main St., a family run shop that carries a wide variety of items from cards, candles, pottery and wine glasses to soaps, lotions, coats, pajamas and scarfs. They also create specialized gourmet baskets containing full size products delivered locally and shipped nationwide. Owner Fred Romano explained, “The holidays are very important to us.” He shared that his favorite holiday memory was helping someone who was in need. There were a couple of trucking companies that had no one to do their gift baskets. SGGB came along and worked with the company, and they loved their baskets so much that they are visiting the shop again for another year. “Our vision for the shop 18 years ago was to be a service company, and to provide a service,” Romano responded. “I think we’ve done that very well. It’s a friendly atmosphere. We’re willing to work with you, and you tell us what you like.” Romano was a salesperson for many years selling veterinary drugs. As he was getting older, RomaGOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 33

no had heart concerns and felt it was time to leave that job. His daughter Emily had a frame shop for 11 years next door to the building on Main Street with another unit. When the unit became available, Romano and his wife Mary Lou decided they could do something with the space, and Somersvillage Gifts & Gourmet Baskets was born. Judy Winchester moved to Somers five months ago from Enfield. When she first walked into the shop, she couldn’t believe how many unique and beautiful items were in this small space. Everywhere she looked she found something new and different. And the owners made her feel so welcome. If she’s looking for a special gift or just browsing, she said she always seems to find something. “Many of their items I don’t see anyplace else,” Winchester said. “Their seasonal candies are the best and I love the unique Christmas ornaments they have. Their soup mixes and jams are delicious.” She continued, “I love having this shop close by. The owners get to know you and are so friendly and helpful. I always seem to run into someone I know. Would much rather shop there than a big box store.” In addition, SGGB has a huge selection of relishes, salsa, jams, jellies and preserves. They expanded their own gourmet line of foods to include bread, muffin, scone mixes, bread dipping oils, and an assortment of dips. They carry soups, slow cooker meals, custom candies & jewelry, women’s bags, tea and cookies. Bev Roberts has lived in Somers for a little over 16 years. When she first moved, she saw Somersvillage 34 GO LOCAL DECEMBER 2023

Gifts & Gourmet Baskets when driving by and decided to stop in to check it out. Roberts said she was “quite charmed” when she walked into the store. It was beautifully appointed with wonderful gifts, wreaths, food items and home decor. “Somersvillage stands out as a wonderful and unique store because of the items they carry,” Roberts said. “As well as the owners Fred and Mary Lou Romano and the great people that work with them including their daughter Emily, Judie and Nancy. They provide a warm and friendly atmosphere and treat all customers like valued guests and are very helpful when you are looking for that special something.” During the holidays and other times of the years, Roberts has purchased hostess gifts, wreaths, jewelry, gourmet food items including chocolate, beautiful cards, baskets, lovely soaps, Christmas decor, clothing items, pretty mugs and much more. “This store is very important to our community,” Roberts pointed out. “People are getting warm customer service and unique items that you get to see in-person before you purchase. You do not get this when you shop online.” Romano’s current and future goals for the store are to get through every season, especially the holidays, and always look for new things to do. “Owning my own business has been something that I wanted to do, “Romano said. “I was able to accomplish that, and it’s been nice.” SOMERSVILLAGE GIFTS & GOURMET BASKETS’ BUSINESS HOURS ARE MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY FROM 10 A.M.- 6 P.M., SATURDAY AT 10 A.M.- 4 P.M.
