FROM THE EDITOR . STEPHANIE TROMBLEY

Ah, January. Now that the wrapping paper has been recycled, the last slice of pie has been consumed and the ornaments are stored snugly in the attic, we can finally relax, breathe and take a moment to focus on health and wellbeing. Not that we should ever see selfishness as a virtue, but this month, don’t feel bad about taking a moment for yourself. Everyone has their own personal relaxing rituals. Perhaps yoga makes you feel peaceful. Maybe a freshly blended smoothie is your bliss. If it makes your mind, body and soul feel good, January is the ideal time to embrace it. With no stressful holidays coming up, it’s an ideal month to clear your mind and your schedule. It’s all about you, readers! Writing brings me inner peace. As the stacks of notebooks lining my bookshelves at home can attest to, it has been my leisure activity for several years. While it may not always be perfect, it’s something I can look at and know I created myself. I am blessed by the fact that my job is also my favorite activity. Meeting new people with great stories and wonderful business ventures brings a smile to my face with each new edition. This month, Go Local meets The Green Ohana in Stafford Springs, clearing our minds and environment of toxicity. Hampden County Beekeepers Assocation’s Bee School’s Mark Lantzakis of Longmeadow introduces us to a hobby that’s also essential to keeping our planet and flowers healthy. Night Owl Knots’ Nikki Loud of Longmeadow brings us back to the winter with crocheted creations that help keep New England toasty. We met all kinds of people this month, and it makes me excited to introduce more of what makes our footprint great in the coming year. In 2019, my New Year’s Resolution is to explore new places. I used to call Northampton my second home. Being only a short distance from my hometown of Springfield, a short drive was the only thing separating me from streets bustling with artists, music and rainbow crosswalks. Even living in Windsor Locks now, I sometimes gaze up at the sun and moon tapestry hanging on my wall in my bedroom. I purchased it at Shop Therapy and remember being a teenager, wandering the downtown streets with it draped over my shoulders. No judgments and no weird looks, just a community allowing a free spirit to experience the Noho nightlife. I recall my excitement to find Fleetwood Mac pins at Turn It Up, and attaching them to my backpack while blaring Rumours in my headphones. I skipped to Inspirit, where knowledgeable staff helped me pick out a rose quartz heart. I remember laughing at the quirky gift options at Faces and then wandering to CVS for a soda. I always left Northampton thinking, “This place gets me.” I am so happy to welcome Northampton and neighboring towns Florence and Easthampton to the Go Local community, starting in February. While I have not visited Florence or Easthampton yet, I am certain I will leave these communities with fond memories and great stories. I look forward to meeting all of the wonderful people and businesses that reside here. I look forward to the New Year, and hope that our readers are equally as excited for 2019!

ME, MY HOOKS & YARN A

peek into Nikki Loud’s Longmeadow home would show that someone with a passion for creating and crocheting lives there. Nikki describes herself on Facebook as “a New England girl who loves hooks and yarn,” and it’s clear. Shelves and tables are lined with skeins of yarn and handcrafted items in a vast array of popping colors including ear warmers, scarves, fingerless gloves and hats. Night Owl Knots, her business, began with one how-to kit. While shopping at a BJ’s warehouse store in January 2016, Nikki stumbled upon a how-to kit on crocheting Disney dolls. She thought they were adorable and purchased the kit, hoping to create future Christmas presents. With no prior experience in crocheting, Nikki took to Youtube and practiced weaving together patterns. “I just started one of the patterns and used Youtube, and away I went. More or less, I started making things like scarves for the kids. The more comfortable I got, the more I made.” Being a stay-at-home mom since her first child turned eleven months old, Nikki was seeking an activity she could work on in her down time. As she shared, “I tried going back to work, but it

10 GO LOCAL JANUARY 2019

wasn’t my thing.” What started as a hobby and gift idea has become a career for Nikki. She now spends her nights curled up on the couch with her dog, crocheting new items to present at craft fairs and on the recently launched Night Owl Knots website. It can be tricky to be a mother and keep up with the demands of a business, but Nikki has a strategy: “I do most of my work at night while the kids are sleeping!” After moving to Longmeadow in May 2017, Nikki realized she could make a business out of her hobby. “I realized people were commenting on how much they liked my stuff. I had such support with my craft and the business.” Nikki originally started her business with an Etsy page in 2017 under a different name. She was selling products primarily to friends and family at the time. When she decided it was time to expand her business, she knew a new name would be necessary. “As I was creating, I didn’t think the name suited me anymore. It was kiddish.” While crocheting on the couch one evening beside her husband, Nikki had a “eureka” moment. “I came up with a couple different ideas. I was sitting there crocheting and it came

to me. I’ve always been a night owl, I said it out loud, and my husband said ‘that’s it!’” From then on, Nikki’s business was known as Night Owl Knots. Nikki’s creations can be purchased in a vast range of styles and colors, making them as eye-catching as they are practical in the harsh, frigid temperatures of New England. Among the products Nikki creates are hats, ear warmers, fingerless gloves, scarves, towels and home goods. Her products are crocheted with 100% extra fine merino wool. Having a natural home is important to Nikki and always on her mind. Because of this, she creates home items that are friendlier for the environment. “It’s not currently in season, but I would be making face scrubbies, hand towels, wool dryer balls and face cloths. I’m always trying to find ways to get toxins out of the house. I may venture into other home goods and décor stuff.” As we move into the New Year, Nikki hopes to continue to see Night Owl Knots grow and flourish in 2019. “It’s been going very well. I would like to have more of an online presence. I would like to hone in on what I will be focusing on for 2019.” Nikki hopes to keep adding products to the new Night Owl Knots website as the year goes on. She currently takes made-to-order custom requests and often features ready-to-ship items as well. Although Nikki is a new resident of Longmeadow, she feels at home in the community and loves working with other local businesses in the area. She currently has products featured at The Humble Fox shop in Somers, Connecticut. “I’m happy with my local community, especially with The Humble Fox. They’ve been doing a good job and it’s a great partnership.” As she travels to local craft fairs and meets others in the community whose passions lie in creating, Nikki feels welcomed by the maker community and is thankful. “I would not have been able to have had the success I have without the maker community in this area being so wonderful. Other makers being a part of a show with someone or something like that, it’s been spectacular. I never thought I would be able to experience community outside of my community.” Being able to create one-of-a-kind pieces that keep her customers warm has made Nikki happy to do what she does. “With every single piece that I make, I know I made it. There’s something about the art of crochet and knowing that when you are done, you have made something. Someone can utilize it every day. A part of you goes into that piece every time. I love that I am helping someone stay warm and lead a more non-toxic and ecofriendly life.” It’s certain that the art of crocheting is a passion in Nikki’s heart that she was happy to stumble across, and one that she will continue to carry for a long time. “I just love it and it’s great that other people love it. It’s just me, my hooks and yarn.” TO VIEW PRODUCTS CURRENTLY OFFERED BY NIGHT OWL KNOTS, PLEASE VISIT WWW.NIGHTOWLKNOTS.COM OR WWW.ETSY.COM/SHOP/NIGHTOWLKNOTS13. STUFFED PEPPERS

As the days get colder and snow starts to fall, warm and hearty meals become the tastiest option for dinnertime. Stuffed peppers are a true classic. The spices within create a delectable aroma in your kitchen and will leave you and your family full and happy. In a pinch, stuffed peppers make the perfect quick meal.

6 green bell peppers

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F.

1 lb. ground turkey

Follow instructions on box to prepare dirty rice.

1 tbsp. garlic salt

On a stovetop, combine Italian seasoning, garlic salt and ground turkey. Prepare ground turkey in pan until fully cooked.

1 tbsp. Italian seasoning

Take two green bell peppers and chop them into fine pieces.

1 box of dirty rice mix

After dirty rice has finished cooking, combine ground turkey and chopped green bell peppers with rice in a large bowl.

1 can of marinara sauce

In a large pot, boil four green bell peppers for 10 minutes. Remove peppers from pot and place in a cooking dish or pan. Scoop rice from bowl into peppers until each pepper is full. Cover each pepper with desired amount of marinara sauce. Place pan in the oven and allow to cook for 15 minutes. Enjoy! GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 13

MAKING A GREEN

A

fter walking in the cold December temperatures down Stafford’s Main Street, it was refreshing to enter Green Ohana. The brand new store, directly across the street from J&D’s Pub, is warm and inviting. From the repurposed furniture pieces displaying the vast range of eco-friendly products to the scent of the essential oils colliding in the atmosphere, Green Ohana is a breath of fresh air. Started by Dorrie and Adam Doolittle, who you may know as the owners of Basic Bars Soap, Green Ohana opened its doors for business in November. The small shop has allowed the couple to showcase their all-natural soap while adding new products to their offerings. While Basic Bars Soap was their first venture, it was a passion that was stumbled upon almost accidentally. Dorrie explained, “We started doing soap for a couple of reasons. One of them was that we had a hard time finding soap for myself. I worked in an industry where there was a lot of chemical exposure and I became allergic to sodium lauryl sulfate, which is the major sudsing agent in almost everything. So I had to use handcrafted soap.” Even after purchasing handcrafted soap that avoided sodium

lauryl sulfate, Dorrie found that she still had issues with breaking out and rashes. The Doolittles found that handcrafted soaps often contain synthetic materials. “We decided, to help me out, we would start creating soap. We took some soap making classes and started producing. We produced for years at home just strictly for ourselves. The end result is a product that’s mostly organic.” After creating several batches and tweaking the product to perfect it, the Doolittles ended up with a lot of extra product. “When you make soap, it’s not like you can make just one bar of soap. You make it sort of how you make a batch of brownies, but then you end up with a whole batch.” The couple gave the excess product away to friends and family as gifts, and they encouraged Dorrie and Adam to start a business. “For years, people encouraged us like ‘this is really great soap, you should do something with this, you should sell it’ and eventually we thought ‘yeah, maybe we should.’” After living with the struggle of not being able to find products that worked for Dorrie, it was evident that there was a need for natural products that was not being fulfilled. “If we had a super GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 17

hard time finding clean, organic ingredients in soap, then others are having that same challenge too and I’m not the only one who is sensitive to that extent. We started making it and it has been absolutely phenomenal how much we have grown in such a short amount of time.” Customers have found and enjoyed Basic Bars Soap in local shops such as Mill Pond Country Store, BellaNess and Cozy Corner Boutique, all located in Stafford. Now, as their business grows and flourishes, the couple has opened Green Ohana, their next adventure. The name “Green Ohana” embodies everything Dorrie and Adam are all about. Ohana is a Hawaiian word meaning “friends, family, community, house and home” interchangeably. As Dorrie explained, “Green Ohana came from our love for Hawaii. We’re big Hawaii fans. We love how natural, pure and clean things are out there. So, Green Ohana. Green meaning eco-friendly, and then ohana meaning our community and family. In Hawaiian culture, your family is your home, so that’s where it ties into home and house too.” Dorrie is happy to be a part of the Stafford community. “There are so many things I like about being a local business. One is the community. I like working in Stafford, particularly on Main Street. We have a really great community of business owners that 18 GO LOCAL JANUARY 2019

are all about helping each other out and promoting each other and helping each other grow. I think that’s pretty special. That doesn’t happen everywhere, everyone having interest in the growth of others.” Dorrie and Adam carry a wide range of eclectic products for those who are looking for more sustainable ways to support the environment, and affordably. The items lining their shop include essential oil candles, cleaning products, laundry products, vegan dryer balls, natural toothpaste, jewelry by Stafford local JoHa Designs, chopsticks, skin salves, balms, reusable snack and sandwich bags, tea towels, reusable napkins, natural chewing gum and natural breath mints. The Green Ohana also offers bamboo toothbrushes, an item that can truly reduce the footprint on Earth. “Bamboo toothbrushes are phenomenal because plastic toothbrushes are a huge environmental issue. They say it takes about 4,000 years for them to start breaking down and you think about how many toothbrushes you go through. They’re absolutely phenomenal.” Many may not think of the detrimental effects of plastic toothbrushes on the environment, and the same can be said of plastic zip lock bags. “Zip lock bags are a huge problem if you think about how many a family of four uses in a week sending their kids to school. If you had reusable ones that can go into the laundry and

what not, then we’re cutting down on the amount of plastic that’s in our oceans and killing our sea life. That’s one of the things we’re passionate about. When people come in, we can show them that there are eco-friendly alternatives to things even when they didn’t think that there was a challenge.” Dorrie and Adam keep this in mind with everything sold in Green Ohana, top to bottom. Even the packaging on their bars of soap takes the planet into consideration. “We are dedicated to being eco-friendly and go far for it. We just did our new packaging and we made sure it was made of 100% recyclable material. We even went as far as doing soy-based inks instead of the traditional commercial inks on them.” The tape securing the packaging around the soap is also biodegradable, making their earth-friendly packaging good for the world around us. “We live, unfortunately, in a pretty toxic world and I think we’re starting to wake up on that. We want to be able to offer people alternatives. Or for people like myself who are chemically sensitive, they can come into the shop and go ‘Okay, almost everything in here, if not everything in here, I can use.” When Go Local visited Green Ohana, both Dorrie and Adam passionately shared with us information about the dangers of chemicals and the benefits of natural products. The knowledge and personal experience they share gives customers an experience that would be missed in a department store. “When you step in here, you have somebody who is knowledgeable about all of the products that are in the shop and we can give great suggestions. We can also educate you top to bottom about where this product was produced and what is in each product. We are a very transparent company and we want to make sure everybody feels comfortable with the products that they’re using.” Dorrie continued, “Every single one of the products in our shop is tested through us first. We spend our time talking to the manufacturers and having those products in our homes first. I can stand behind everything that’s in this shop and give personal experience as to how good it is.” All of the products sold by Green Ohana have no synthetic fragrance or synthetic dyes and are produced in an eco-friendly manner. Dorrie shared that Green Ohana has a strong vegan following, which has led them to carry several vegan items. The shop also carries an organic skincare line made with food-grade ingredients. Dorrie shared, “The producer of that particular line, her theory is ‘if you can’t eat it, you shouldn’t put it on your skin,’ because your skin absorbs everything you put on it.” Dorrie happily shared, “We use organic everywhere we can. The only time we don’t use an organic product is if we literally can’t find an organic option for it. If there’s an organic option for it, we have it. If you’re looking for eco-friendly, you know when you come in here that everything is eco-friendly. The fact that we are also mostly local and Connecticut makers means that the carbon footprint is coming down, too. Someone who’s really thinking about that stuff is going to appreciate that.” The shop plans to celebrate their opening with an event in the coming months, but for now, Green Ohana is getting settled in. “I feel like GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 19

we’ve really lucked out in being in the spot that we are at, at the time that we are here. Stafford is starting to really boom with an art scene and people who are very conscious about environmental issues. Being able to work with other business owners and being able to be one-onone with our customers is the best. It’s the personal connections that I get to have all the way around.” Green Ohana has become a part of the creator community with their involvement in Arts on Main. On the second Friday of every month between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., Stafford hosts Arts on Main, an evening where the local shops stay open late and the streets come alive with art. “There may be music out in the streets or maybe music in some of the places and maybe a local artist inside some of the boutiques selling their wares, things of that nature. Every month during Arts on Main, we change and feature a new local artist and the artist will be there that day. It gives them the chance for exposure. The whole entire Main Street is about building the community and trying to help each other out, even if they’re not a local business owner.” Green Ohana will continue to plant its roots in Stafford and grow as the business enters 2019. They plan to change the art on the walls to focus on local artists. Dorrie shared, “You should be seeing from us in 2019 more household products that are nontoxic that we personally have found a challenge to find out in the community and therefore, we are working to make them.” “We all want to do our part in making good choices and making sure the environment is clean for the next generations to come.” Watching Adam make Dorrie smile while she posed with the products she’s proud to carry, and listening to the couple discuss their upcoming holiday vacation, it’s clear that the Doolittles are one happy Ohana, and that they are just getting started leaving a natural impression on the maker community of Stafford. REGULARLY, GREEN OHANA IS OPEN THURSDAYS 12-4, FRIDAYS 11-4 AND WEEKENDS 11-4. GREEN OHANA WILL BE OPEN LIMITED HOURS THROUGH JAN. 15 AND WILL ONLY BE OPEN ON WEEKENDS 12-4. the buzz on bee school

! STEPHANIE TROMBLEY  MARK LANTZAKIS

W

hile the snow may be keeping New England residents from thinking about springtime activities and the outdoors, it will be warm again before we know it. Now is the perfect time to start thinking about ways to get outside and support the world around us, all while having a great time. Most students will be preparing to go back to school after winter vacation to study math, English or history, but the Hampden County Beekeepers Association in East Longmeadow will be offering a truly unique class that’s sure to be the buzz of the town. Come January 12, the 2019 Hampden County Beekeepers Association’s Bee School will be in session. The classes include three fullday sessions and will be held January 12, February 16 and March 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Classes will meet at the Longmeadow High School auditorium. As described by the Hampden County Beekeepers Association, “This beginning bee school program will cover everything an aspiring beekeeper would need to know to start beekeeping on a hobbyGOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 25

ist level.” Mark Lantzakis, Vice President of the association, explained some of the topics that will be included during classes. “What will be covered are the basics of beekeeping, terminology, conditions of the hive and how to prepare for winter/spring.” At the end of the classes, the Hampden County Beekeepers Association will be giving away a complete hive to get one lucky student started on their new hobby. The Hampden County Beekeepers Association began in 1930. The association is a platform for beekeepers to meet monthly at Willimansett Heights and discuss beekeeping. Often, the group will invite guest speakers. In September, the club hosts a booth at the Big E Agriculture Fair. The club promotes beekeeping and sells their honey products during the fair. Mark shared why he would suggest residents take the upcoming beekeeping classes. “Attending bee school is a great way to become familiar with the fundamentals of beekeeping and provides a new beekeeper a better chance of success in their first years.” After taking bee classes, the Hampden County Beekeepers Association sets students up with a mentor to apply the education they have received. Mark shared, “The school affords 26 GO LOCAL JANUARY 2019

the students with a terrific mentoring program where experienced beekeepers can assist students with any questions and issues that may arise. Mentoring new beekeepers is also a nice ancillary benefit that has come my way.” For those who are interested in beekeeping, Mark suggests taking the Hampden County Beekeepers Association’s Bee School classes rather than relying solely on online information. “There are great online resources and books, but the Internet can be dangerous. To be successful and to understand beekeeping, there is nothing like hearing it firsthand. Classes are a good way to support information.” Many people may be scared to take beekeeping classes because of a fear of being stung. But Mark explained that this shouldn’t stop you from beekeeping. “Honeybees don’t have the desire to sting. If they sting, they die. I can stand next to them and not be stung. Be aware that they are gentle, but can also be defensive.” When one thinks about bees, the first thing that comes to mind may be a wasp or a hornet. These insects are not the same as honeybees and have a different personality. Students should keep in mind that honeybees die after stinging humans. Because of the shape of their stingers, the stinger be-

comes stuck in human skin after stinging, dismembering them and causing deadly damage to their internal organs. Honeybees are not on a mission to sting. As Mark explained, “Honeybees have a mission to collect pollen and nectar.” Mark shared why he thinks beekeeping is important. “Beekeeping is important for a number of reasons. Honeybees are important pollinators and it’s vital that we ensure their survival. Most of the fruits and vegetables we enjoy are the result of honeybee pollination.” Beekeeping is also important, as honeybees are considered an endangered species. Learning how to properly care for and keep honeybees helps to keep the population alive. As Mark shared, “There are issues with parasites that place honeybees under stress. The environment is causing bee issues. You have to be a beekeeper. They are like a pet, you have to keep them.” While beekeeping is a fun activity, some cities and towns have regulations and requirements when it comes to participating at your home. For example, in Longmeadow, the town Mark calls home, beekeepers are required to notify their neighbors that they are keeping bees on their property. Depending on the size of the property, there are also regulations on how many hives can be kept on the property. In Longmeadow, if your residential lot size is ¼ acre or less, you may only keep a maximum of two hives. For larger properties, a Longmeadow resident may keep up to twelve hives. Mark recommends checking with your town to verify what regulations they hold on beekeeping. Beekeeping can be an exciting and fun hobby. As Mark explained, “I enjoy doing my part, however little, to help these important pollinators survive. I also find it immensely relaxing while working in my hives and around my bees. The world’s worries tend to fade away when in the midst of a hive inspection.” Not to mention, beekeeping provides keepers with a great treat. “Of course, the honey is a nice benefit of all of the work that the bees and I do during the year.” Interested in becoming a beekeeper? Register for the Hampden County Beekeepers Association’s Bee School online at www. hampden-county-beekeepers.org and click on the “Bee School” tab. The cost is $90 per person, or $170 for a pair of attendees. A membership to the Hampden County Beekeepers Association is included in the school fee, so that students may attend advanced classes upon completion of the school later in the year. To become a member of the Hampden County Beekeepers Association without participating in the upcoming classes, please visit the Hampden County Beekeepers Association website to fill out a form. Or, simply stop by one of their upcoming meetings to be signed up on the spot. The annual fee is $10. The next meeting will be held Jan. 24.
