FROM THE EDITOR . STEPHANIE TROMBLEY EDITOR
Stephanie Trombley
Every morning, I drive from Windsor Locks to East Longmeadow, a commute roughly thirty minutes away to the Reminder Publishing office. The distance has never been a problem for me. I tend to pass my time listening to the radio or looking at the green signs every few feet on the highway. As I approach the Springfield exit, I see signs for Suffield, Enfield, Longmeadow and more. Each of these places has personal meaning to me. I’ve been lucky enough to meet great people in all of them. If I venture backwards past Windsor Locks and through East Windsor, I see the location of the first article that I contributed to Go Local at the East Windsor Historical Society. More than once, I’ve driven through South Windsor and shared with Travis (my boyfriend,) “That place has the best Italian cookies,” or “They have the neatest book arch in there!” Writing for Go Local has almost felt like an unending, local road trip. I’ve had the opportunity to explore all of the great places I didn’t know existed, right outside my door. Surely, over the next several years, new places and faces will pop up in the area with stories to be told. The bittersweet part about that fact is that I won’t be the one to share them. This issue marks my last issue as editor of Go Local. Change is a good thing, and big changes are coming for Go Local and myself. Starting in August, the Go Local map will expand to cover the towns of Westfield and Southwick in Massachusetts and Granby, North Granby and East Granby in Connecticut. Next month, you’ll also meet your new editors. I look forward to picking up a monthly copy and learning even more about the area I call home. Maybe I will live in New England forever. Maybe life will take me across the map. Maybe I’ll settle down in Virginia, something Travis and I have danced around for a long time. All I know is that with every story written, everyone I interviewed made me feel welcome and a part of the community. I will have roots in West Springfield, Agawam, Longmead-

We have one cool community. I’m lucky to have been able to hear all about it. I’ve heard so many stories about waking up with a new dream and diving in. Thank you for inspiring me. I think I’m going to take those stories with me and write my own. As American sportscaster Ernie Harwell once said, “It’s time to say goodbye, but I think goodbyes are sad and I’d much rather say hello. Hello to a new adventure.” I’ll keep this month’s editor’s note short and sweet so our readers can get started read-

STAFFORD300 COMMITTEE - HARTENSTEIN PHOTOGRAPHY
CELEBRATING HISTORY: STAFFORD’S TRICENTENNIAL ! STEPHANIE TROMBLEY
A lot can change in 300 years. For residents of Stafford, their dedication to their town has stayed the same. In 2017, a committee was formed to plan the town’s big 300th celebration, bringing together ten members, dedicated volunteers and lots of Stafford pride. The team has worked since then to host exciting events for residents, including a community breakfast, tricentennial gala and a town wide beautification project. Formerly the editor of Go Local, Amber Wakley has switched gears and now works for the town of Stafford as the Grants and Marketing Specialist and as Chair of the Stafford 300th Year Anniversary Committee. Go Local met with the committee just after their meeting to see what they have in store for the town of Stafford. “We have committee members who have been appointed, but we also have this greater group of people that participate on a regular basis, which is amazing. It seems like every meeting, we grow and grow with people wanting to get involved,” Wakley shared. The committee first met in 2018 to begin planning the many events that are helping to celebrate Stafford’s milestone. “Our first meeting was January 2018. In the grand scheme of things, when you’re planning monthly events for a year duration, that’s not a lot of time,” Wakley said. 10 GO LOCAL JULY 2019
One of the committee’s major projects has been the coordination of the installation of the “Stafford Legacy Clock.” Hand forged by Verdin Clock Company of Cincinnati, the clock will serve as a landmark for the town of Stafford. The clock will be installed within Haymarket Common in Stafford. The clock will be unveiled during the Historic Trolley Tour and Legacy Clock Dedication event on July 20. The dedication will take place next to the Haymarket Common Amphitheatre. Local businesses, groups and residents donated to support the project. “We’re going to unveil the clock, which is our big legacy gift to the town that has been supported by residents. It’s a community project. We fundraised to get this clock up and people donated money toward it,” Wakley said. Wakley continued, “The idea was to bring the community together to have a lasting legacy for our 300th year.” When asked why they personally feel it is important to have a Stafford 300th Year Anniversary Committee, several members agreed it is about bringing the community together. “In a fast-paced life that we all lead right now, a lot of families I think go and go and go and they don’t really take the time to stop and just enjoy time with their neighbors. I think that is a good goal of ours, using this celebration as a good reason to bring the town closer together,” said committee member Amy Hartenstein. Hartenstein continued, “People called after the gala and for like two weeks said, ‘you know what, I haven’t done that in years, can you do it again next weekend? We had so much fun,’ and that’s GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 33
all we’ve heard after each event is ‘that was so nice, thank you for doing it.’” Committee member Brenda Simons shared, “It’s important to be presenting opportunities for people to gather together and appreciate each other and our town.” “As a person who’s not from Stafford, I choose to live here and I love this town. I feel like it’s a really close-knit community to be able to bring everyone together. I get goose bumps after all of these events and I think it can’t get better and then it does,” Wakley shared. Wakley continued, “I think there’s a lot of pride here and the events really reflect that as well.” Opportunities are available for volunteers as well as sponsors. Interested volunteers can complete the form found at staffordct300.com/get-involved Sponsorship opportunities can be found at staffordct300.com/sponsors Current sponsors include Stafford Savings Bank, TTM Technologies, Stafford Motor Speedway, 3M, Stafford Veterinary Center, Festi’s Power Equipment & Oil and Fenton River Veterinary Hospital. Wakley said that there are several ways for the community to get
involved in each of the upcoming events and projects. “Whether you build, paint, crochet or promote, there’s pretty much a purpose for you,” Wakley said. Upcoming events include the Historic Trolley Tour and Legacy Clock Dedication event on July 20 and the 300 Year Parade and Party on Sept. 21. Registration is open for those who would like to participate in the parade with a float or by marching. Entities such as businesses, clubs and farms are welcome to participate. The Historic Trolley Tour will be an interactive guided tour narrated by Stafford historians. Tours of downtown, neighborhoods and more will be scheduled throughout the day. Pick up and drop off will take place from the Stafford Historical Society at 2 Spring Street in Stafford. The 300 Year Parade will begin from Furnace Avenue at 1 p.m. and will continue through Downtown. The parade will end with an after party at the Stafford Motor Speedway on 55 West Street. The after party will include live music, food, vendors, a classic car show and more. cornucopia is a symbol of abundance; a vessel filled with a bounty of fruit and vegetables. Northampton’s own Cornucopia, an independent natural foods market nestled in Thornes Marketplace is no exception. For locals seeking sustainability and natural options both for meals and the home, visit the small shop located at 150 Main Street. Shoppers will find shelves of natural options including fresh organic produce, coffee, detergent and snacks. While the store may be under new ownership, Cornucopia is a longtime staple in Downtown Northampton. It was opened in 1980 by couple Bud and Sydney Stockwell. Once the couple realized they were ready to sell the business they turned to husband and wife duo Nate Clifford and Jade Jump, who had been dreaming of owning the business. Jump is a native of Milford, but moved to the Cambridge/Boston area following her graduation. Clifford hails from Hallowell, Maine. It was during Jump’s pregnancy with their daughter that the couple decided to make the move to Hampshire County. Now, Clifford is the store manager of Cornucopia while Jump manages marketing for the store. “We had been working on business plans for years and then once I got pregnant in 2015, we decided we wanted to move out this way. We always wanted to move into a sort-of more rural neighborhood,” Jump said. After unpacking and settling down in the area, Clifford set out GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 21
to find a job. “When we got here, I needed a job and Jade was very, very pregnant. She wasn’t going to be working, at least not in a stand up and run around sense. She was doing a lot of freelance graphic design at the time,” Clifford explained. Clifford continued, “I needed a job so the owner of Cambridge Naturals, the place where I really fell in love with the whole industry at, called Bud and said ‘Do you have a job for this guy?’ At the time, [Bud] had his grocery buyer transitioning out so I came into this store in a way that is really rare. I came in as a buyer and I came in running.” Clifford explained that he was passionate about his role at Cornucopia from the day he started. “I probably frustrated some people with ‘Why aren’t we more urgently making the changes that are necessary?’ but I developed a reputation with [Bud] of being somebody that is not overly sensitive, not that there’s anything wrong with being sensitive, and someone who can take direction and just get stuff done and be on board. We developed a relationship of respect that way. It was only three or four months before he offered us the business,” Clifford said. Jump and Clifford’s passion for all natural and sustainable was a long time in the making. For Clifford, he has spent over a decade in the industry he says he “fell in love with.” Clifford brings experience from places like Wild Oats Market and Whole Foods to Cornucopia. It was after working alongside Jump at Cambridge Naturals that the pair began brainstorming a business plan. “We worked there for a couple of years together. We knew early on in our relationship that we wanted a business together. It just made sense for us,” Jump said. Jump explained that the Stockwells soon offered the couple the opportunity to purchase Cornucopia. “Soon after we moved out here, Bud and Sydney sat down with us for dinner and we talked about our hopes and dreams and how we’d one day love to own a store like this. They said, ‘Well, would you like a store like this?’” Jump shared. About three and a half years later in March 2019, Clifford and Jump became the new owners of Cornucopia. Since then, the cou22 GO LOCAL JULY 2019
ple has been working to iron out details and implement changes that they are hoping to see. “It’s definitely a lot more work than I think we could have ever predicted. We knew it was going to be a lot of work. It’s a lot to try to change the culture a little bit and get a good, strong foundation in place as we see it should be,” Clifford explained. Jump added, “It’s laying down the foundation, adjusting the handbook, doing staff reviews and staff meetings, just all of those basic things and just trying to get a system in place so we can focus on the bigger, more exciting projects of the store.” Clifford said that they are sticking to the roots of Cornucopia while creating a more philosophy-based store. “We are just trying to move into an even more philosophy-based space, meaning cruelty-free and organic and clean body care and really wellsourced and effective, ethical supplements. And then as much in the organic and local realm for groceries, perishables and produce as well. One of Jade and I’s missions is to make this store more sustainable,” Clifford explained. Jump said that the pair is hoping to see physical changes to the location as well. “We definitely want to make a lot of environment and aesthetic changes inside the store eventually. I would say in the next few years, you’ll see it looking a lot differently than it does right now,” Jump shared. Cornucopia plans to change the structure of the store’s entrance and will hang a new sign upon completion. But for now, Clifford said he is thankful for what the store already has. “We have a great team and a lot of great help, “Clifford shared. Jump and Clifford said that they have enjoyed being a part of the Northampton community. “I don’t think we would take up the offer if we were offered a large chain store with a corporate structure in place. We like to be in a community that we really love and respect and live in, like to shop in and eat in. Our daughter goes to daycare in this community, so we just feel a lot of connection and a lot of good will from the people here, so we feel by being here and doing what we do, it is a monetization of good GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 23
will. We will be reasonable with our prices, we will be good to you, and we will try to have empathy and compassion for everyone. We intend to double down on that and get more and more involved,” Clifford shared. Jump added, “The community aspect is huge for us. We’ve gotten so much positive feedback like ‘Thank you for keeping this store going’ or ‘Thank you for not letting it shut down’ and so for us, it’s just important to not only keep the store going, but keep it sustainable so it can last another 40 plus years and remain here.” When it comes to the success of Cornucopia, Clifford attributes it largely to working alongside Jump. “I think there was something really intriguing of that one-two punch of Jade and I. I always know in the back of my mind that I have this secret weapon in Jade because we can do this extremely high-end graphic de24 GO LOCAL JULY 2019
sign and put this out here,” Clifford said. Clifford continued, “All of it is Jade. I’ve been told I’m a very charismatic person and I’m the guy who’s front and center. But I have this secret weapon and I wouldn’t even have considered this without her and that skill from Jade. I feel genuinely lucky and I feel like it’s going to be a huge part of what makes us really competitive.” Cornucopia is planning a grand opening celebration during the month of July. BRIAN KELLIHER OWNER OF EASY PICKIN’S ORCHARD ENFIELD, CT
NOT PICTURED: CAROLE FAY OF EASY PICKIN’S ORCHARD STEPHANIE TROMBLEY
Where did the orchard get its start?
Brian: My folks purchased the property in 1951. We started planting apple trees in 1990. We started planting blueberries in the mid-90s. We planted raspberries before that.
WHAT MAKES YOUR BLUEBERRIES SPECIAL?
Brian: We spend a lot of time with detail pruning, which helps the size. We purchased bumblebees and bumblebees love blueberries and are also pollinators for blueberries because the way they buzz, it gives you a better pollination and bigger berries. We have nine varieties. We start in early July through September. Carole: Most places will grow 1-3 varieties and then shut down in July. We have a lot of different flavors and then some real nice size and sweetness in the early berries, which a lot of people come for.
What makes blueberry picking the ideal summer activity? Carole: Blueberries are one of the most low-stress, easy and enjoyable crops for people to pick because your blueberries are anywhere from a foot off the ground to six feet in the air. So you take a tall guy out there with a little kid and the little kid sits and cleans the lower branches and the tall guy doesn’t have to keep bending over.
Do you have any advice for those who haven’t tried the pick-your-own activity yet?
Brian: Bring some drinking water and wear a hat. I like to wear long sleeves and things, but sunscreen and insect repellant. Also, come in the morning. Carole: When you go to a place that is pick-your-own, ask for advice because everything has a simple technique. If somebody’s never picked, you teach them by feel how to handle the fruit, how to know a ripe berry when you see it, and how to pick efficiently.
Why would you recommend people try pick-your-own?
Brian: It’s important to support your local farms. I always try to get that message across. Carole: People have gotten so used to being able to walk into a supermarket and get 12 months a year pineapple, strawberries or berries in general. What picking your own teaches you is seasonality. It teaches you what is ripe and when. You figure it out.

COOL STUFF JUST OUTSIDE YOUR DOOR
FRESH POPPING CORN PODUNK POPCORN • SOUTH WINDSOR, CT (860) 548-6763 • PODUNKPOPCORN.COM
From one idea comes new beginnings. In 2010, Daniel Dzen attempted to grow sweet corn. After three years of unsuccessful attempts, Dzen planted popcorn on a half-acre lot at his family farm, Dzen Tree Farm. The corn was hand harvested in the fall and stored in a drying bin. After perfecting the popcorn, Dzen decided to package it in a mason jar and name it after one of South Windsor’s oldest landmarks, the Podunk River. Today, Podunk Popcorn can be found at Dzen Tree Farm, online and in numerous stores around the area including Armata’s Market and Geissler’s Supermarket. Podunk Popcorn is locally grown, processed and packaged in South Windsor. With no GMOs, preservatives, chemicals, colors or flavorings, Podunk Popcorn is something you can feel good about. Visit podunkpopcorn.com for a list of delicious recipes. There are many ways to enjoy the flavor of freshly popped popcorn this summer!

f you find a mermaid fin in your ice cream, don’t worry, it’s not a mistake at The Scoop located in Ellington. This is just the ice cream café’s style. It’s one of several bright and popping garnishes that add to the aesthetic of FunShakes, a staple dessert at the café. Having fun is the name of the game at The Scoop, opened in 2017 by nurse practitioner and Ellington resident Kelly Nolin. She fulfilled a dream just two years ago, that began with a Pinterest board, by opening the shop by the Ellington Town Green. “I was a nurse for 30 years and I always had this idea in the back of my head, kind of swimming around. It never really went anywhere. I had this Pinterest board that was called something like ‘Ice Cream Shops’ for the dream day when that came,” Nolin said. At the end of her graduate schooling, Nolin decided it was time to make her dream into a reality. “I was at the end of my graduate schooling and everything kind of just fell into place,” Nolin said. After raising her children in Ellington, Nolin was inspired and
sought to create a place where local kids could spend time unwinding after school. “I live in town and I raised my kids here in town. I realized there was nowhere here for them to go after school to get an ice cream and sit and hang out or to use the WiFi and have a coffee. We’re very close to the high school and right on the Green, so I thought this would be the perfect spot. And then it was born,” Nolin shared. The 18 Church Street location has a welcoming atmosphere of bright décor, friendly staff and a traditional case filled with gallons of ice cream offerings. The nostalgia of peering through the glass to observe rows of flavors is made possible at the center of the café. Outside, tables surround fun activities including outdoor Jenga and cornhole. On select dates, patrons can enjoy live music performed by Ellington locals. The Scoop serves an array of foods and drinks including allnatural, non-GMO ice cream, healthy smoothies, homemade 33 GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 29
whipped cream, locally roasted coffee, Ghirardelli chocolatedipped ice cream cones, custom cakes and more. Mindful to those with specific dietary needs, The Scoop also serves nondairy ice cream and sorbets as well as gluten free ice cream cones. Customers are welcome to order custom ice cream cakes in several sizes ranging from personal to small, large and sheet. Some examples of ice cream cakes created in the past include Spiderman and unicorns. Among the most visually captivating items on the menu is the FunShake, ice cream shakes packed with just about anything sweet that fits inside of the tall glass. The treats are made for the consumer with the ultimate sweet tooth. From chocolate shapes to lollipops, the possibilities are seemingly endless. The crazy confections are inspired by a term Nolin came across on Pinterest, “Freak Shakes.” “I’m always looking for fun things to do with [FunShakes.] I saw these things on Pinterest called ‘Freak Shakes,’ but I don’t like that term. I didn’t think it was kid-friendly, so we call them ‘FunShakes.’ I have a really creative group of girls and guys that work with me and we really just have fun,” Nolin shared. For the staff at The Scoop, creativity is highly encouraged when concocting a new FunShake variety. “We started just playing around with FunShakes and then the ‘Unicorn FunShake’ was born and then the ‘Mermaid FunShake.’ We did things like ‘Peanut Butter Madness’ and ‘Chocolate Madness’ in the past. We’re always thinking of something new,” Nolin said. The “Mermaid FunShake” features a blue mermaid fin made from chocolate, sweet frosting, homemade whipped cream, sparkling sprinkles and a stick of rock candy. The “Unicorn FunShake” features a lollipop, a rainbow of sprinkles and a pile of bright and fluffy cotton candy. The Scoop also offers “Cameo FunShakes” that are typically served during the holidays. Examples of FunShakes offered at the café in the past include an “Easter FunShake” complete with a marshmallow Peep and chocolate eggs and the “Lucky Leprechaun FunShake”, garnished with Lucky Charm marshmallows and green sprinkles. “Basically, we have fun making them. They’re rarely ever the same thing twice. We try, but we don’t try too hard. Every one has its own little flair. It’s like art,” Nolin said. When Nolin decided to introduce FunShakes to the menu, she said she expected patrons to share them. “I thought ‘Isn’t this a cute thing to have for a couple or a sister and a brother?’ But no, people started getting their own!” Nolin laughed. The FunShakes aren’t the only standout offering at The Scoop. Alongside traditional flavors, the café also serves uncommon flavors including “Mexicali,” a chocolate flavor with a spicy bite and “Blueberry Honey Lavender,” a light and summery flavor. 30 GO LOCAL JULY 2019
As Nolin spoke with Go Local, her dog Ginger danced between her feet. Representing her adoration for dogs, The Scoop is a dog-friendly location that offers “Pup Cups” and “Puppicinos” for furry friends. The Scoop is hoping to start offering smoothie bowls in the near future as well as fun sundaes. “We’re going to take all of the craziness and silliness we have in our FunShakes and morph it into an ice cream sundae,” Nolin said. Nolin shared that The Scoop is also looking into events including a “messy face contest” to see who has the best messy, ice cream eating face and a harvest party during the fall. For the summer season, the outdoor patio has featured performances from local musician Bruce John and local band The Rolling Beat. Performances will continue throughout the summer. Nolin shared that she feels The Scoop is not just a café, but also a fun experience for patrons. “Come for a fun experience. It’s not just getting an ice cream. Come in, try our different flavors and ask for a sample. It’s fun to try them. Play some outdoor games, enjoy the sunshine and listen to some music on the patio. It’s an experience,” Nolin said. The Scoop is open seven days a week from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Hours may vary based on weather. For more information about The Scoop, visit the café’s Facebook page at facebook. com/thescoopicecreamcafe or their website ellingtonscoop. com. The Scoop can be reached at 860-454-0996. While ice cream in the summer seems like a no-brainer, The Scoop remains open year-round. Keep up with their Facebook page to see when holiday items pop up. Past offerings include apple pie a la mode and pumpkin ice cream!

Denise Schlechtweg and her husband, Bryan Schlechtweg have always been fans of animals. They have owned animals such as cats, dogs, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, iguanas and even a horse. With a home that’s housed so many pets, it was a no-brainer to be in the business of animals. The couple is JJS Pet Sitting, a pet sitting business focused on assisting with animals of all kinds in the local Stafford Springs area. It all started when Denise was taking riding lessons in the 1990s with her sister. “My sister was walking dogs in her neighborhood. We were taking riding lessons from a woman with a stable up here in Staffordville and we got to know her and the animals very well. She had eight horses, many cats, a dog, chickens and everything,” Denise said.

DENISE & BRYAN SCHLECHTWEG OF JJS PET SITTING WITH HAPPY CUSTOMER, BRADY STAFFORD SPRINGS, CT
The trainer, Diane (Bosco) Whalen, confided in Denise and her sister, sharing that she hadn’t been able to take a vacation in over five years. “She said she didn’t trust anybody to take care of her horses. But we knew the routine and we knew the horses. My sister and I stayed at her house for a week while she vacationed.” It was then that Denise found her calling. “We loved it and thought, ‘Well, maybe there’s other people.’ Unfortunately, my sister moved to Arizona a couple years after that and I approached the riding instructor. We became really good friends and her and I put together this business. Her stable was called Jumping Jack Stables and she knew how to run a business, so we decided we’ll just call it JJS and it stuck ever since,” Denise said. Even after Diane moved to New York, the name stuck and Denise enlisted her husband to help with JJS Pet Sitting. “I hired my husband about ten years ago because he had come with me a couple of times to do pet sitting, so he knew some of the animals already and couldn’t wait to start,” Denise said. Now, Bryan does most of the walking and pet sitting while Denise is responsible for maintaining the paperwork and bookkeeping. “We work Monday through Friday. If the person works all day or if they have a vacation or an emergency, we can take care of that. When we go on interviews, we always tell customers it’s nice to have a backup plan,” Denise said. “I always ask Bryan if he still feels capable of doing it and he says he loves it. It’s nice not to have a 9-5 job,” Denise explained. Denise and Bryan are happy to stay local and to get to know many animals. “It keeps us busy enough. Sometimes we’re really busy, but it’s a fluctuating kind of business that depends on the season. It’s pretty steady. We get by from it and are happy to stay local,” Denise said. Pictured here are Denise, Bryan and one of their happy clients, Brady, a locally bred and raised German Shorthair Pointer. “Her owner is a big Patriots fan and of course named her Brady. We started visiting her in 2015 when she was four months old and learning how to do steps and walk on a leash,” Denise shared. Now, Brady is four years old and enjoys bird hunting, long walks and biscuits. “She does point at every bird she sees in the bushes on her walks,” Denise said. IT’S A BLAST! ENFIELD’S
Fourth of
July celebration
! STEPHANIE TROMBLEY Camera IZZY POST
E
ach year, Enfield lets freedom ring with a big bash hosted on the Enfield Town Green. The town comes alive with musical acts, food and fun. To make sure it all goes off without a hitch, the Enfield Fourth of July Town Celebration Committee volunteers their time to making it all happen starting as soon as December. This year, the event will take place over three days during Fourth of July weekend on July 5, 6, and 7. Hundreds of volunteers will work alongside the Committee to make all of the fun happen. Go Local sat down with Greg Stokes and Izzy Post, members of the Enfield Fourth of July Town Celebration Committee and cochairs of marketing. With Stokes and Post being just two members of a Committee of 26, it takes a crowd to ensure Enfield’s coveted celebration is a blast. “The goal is that the entertainment and all the activities for kids and families will never cost them a dime. We’ve stuck with that through the support of our sponsors and we’re able to provide that. There’s food and beverages that you can buy, but to come on the Green and enjoy everything, it’s free of charge,” Stokes shared. Each year for over three decades, the town of Enfield has celebrated the Fourth of July with a schedule of fun activities. Ac38 GO LOCAL JULY 2019
tivities this year include live bands, Taste of Enfield, the Teen Zone, children’s activity area, pie eating contests, a craft fair and art show, car show and parade. Post has personal ties to the Enfield Fourth of July Town Celebration Committee, being a third generation member. Her grandfather was a member at the first establishment of the committee and her parents followed. “It started before we were established as an official committee 37 years ago. Prior to that, it started as a picnic of five families. It grew and grew and grew until they moved it to the green and then they said ‘okay, we should really, truly try planning this.’ That’s when my grandfather came in, when it was first established 37 years ago,” Post said. Post continued, “Anything that you can think of that sparks interest, we have it. Music, food, drink, kids’ activities, fireworks, a parade…we have it.” With family ties to the committee, Post said the Enfield Fourth of July Celebration is special to her. “My parents joined the committee with my grandfather the year my mother was pregnant with me. My parents have both unfortunately passed away, so it’s kind of my turn,” Post said. Post smiled as she continued, “It’s something I’ve always been GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 33
around. The event has grown tremendously. It has grown since I’ve grown up. It’s just one of those things that it’s my turn for now and I don’t really know any other way than doing this. I feel like if I told them no, they’d probably tell me otherwise.” Stokes said he enjoys involving his family with the Enfield Fourth of July Celebration. “What I like about it most of all is that I got involved when my wife and I sponsored throughout the years. And then about 9 years ago, I was asked to join the committee. What I like about it is that weekend, I have my wife and my kids and their spouses. Two of the older grandkids volunteer all weekend long. I like it because my family all knows that this weekend we’re all going to be out on the Green and we’re all going to be working and volunteering. For me, it really is nice for my family that we do one thing altogether,” Stokes said. While aspects of the celebration such as the firework show and parade remain consistent each year, Stokes shared that they try to mix other portions up each year. “We redo everything every year. We try to mix it up. We try to go out and get a big name act. But other things like the parade and fireworks stay the same. Every year, we look at new ideas.” For the 2019 event, musical acts include Catie Turner, Trailer
Trash, Little Texas, Witch Doctors, Beyond Purple, Last Licks, LA Backstage Pass, Kip Winger of Winger, The Legendary Lita Ford, John Cantalina Band, Equinoxx, The Savage Brothers and Jimmy Kenny – The Pirate Beach Band. “I think the community enjoys everything. A community favorite is the parade. Something that’s more widespread throughout New England is the music. We have a lot of people in town here who come but we also have people who follow the bands and come from places like New Hampshire, Vermont and New York. The Independence Day parade is the most community-driven. It’s our town,” Stokes said. The 2019 Enfield Independence Day Parade will take place on July 6 with the theme “Hip Hip Hooray! It’s Independence Day!” The parade follows Enfield Street from the Olde Enfield Town Hall and marches two miles down Historic Enfield Street to the Town Green. Firework displays are typically the cornerstone of Fourth of July celebrations, and the Enfield fireworks show is no exception. This year’s firework show will be hosted on July 7 at 9:45 p.m. “Our town takes pride in the fact that we host this event. They take pride in the fact that we can have something free of charge and be able to have large name acts and openers free of charge.
GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 39
And they are very proud of our fireworks. About eight years ago in 2012, we were ranked by the Boston Globe as one of the top firework displays in New England. I think those are three main things that people take pride in. Especially in such a small town like Enfield that we are able to put something on like this,” Post said. Hailing from Detroit, Stokes said the New England atmosphere is part of what he enjoys in the community. “I come from Detroit and about 25 years ago, I moved here. For me, I love the New England feeling. Where I come from, there’s no town greens. I love the whole atmosphere of New England, like the history and events,” Stokes said. With each year of the event, Post said that the Enfield Fourth of July Town Celebration Committee’s mission has remained the same. “Our mission is that no one pays a dime. If you wanted to just sit, go enjoy the activities or listen to music, you can do that. And we want to keep that going for as long as this celebration continues. We’re still going strong,” Post shared. Stokes and Post said that they each enjoy watching the celebration come full circle every year. “My most enjoyable part of it is the countdown to the fireworks.

I’m on the stage and I’m able to see out into the crowds and the enthusiasm, and it’s very rewarding. It really is,” Stokes said. Post shared, “I’ve been a part of this celebration my entire life. My mother and I started a director-in-training program as a joke ironically and now it’s an actual program from about 12 years ago now. When we were working on it together, she looked at me one night and said, ‘do you see all these people having a good time and smiling? You’re part of the reason why these people are smiling.’ It’s always stuck with me. It’s not an easy task to put on. It’s a lot of work. But seeing tens of thousands of people enjoying themselves and you’re a part of that reason, it’s all worth it.” For more information on the event and a full schedule of happenings, visit enfieldcelebration.org/events The Enfield Fourth of July Town Celebration Committee is always accepting volunteers and sponsors. For more information, visit enfieldcelebration.org/sponsors/info.shtml The Enfield Town Green is located by the Enfield Town Hall on Enfield Street in Enfield. No coolers, pets, bikes, skateboard, rollerblades, fireworks or outside alcohol will be permitted at the event.
