a note

FROM THE MANAGING EDITOR . G. MICHAEL DOBBS

This magazine has always been about highlighting local businesses and attractions and this issue is no exception. I view the publication as an incentive to participate in the great American institution known as the “road trip.” It seems that road trips are about planning and serendipity in equal measure. Yes, it’s fairly important to have an agenda, but it’s also vital to be loose enough to stop the car and pile out when someone spots someplace interesting. When I was a kid, road trips were part of the family experience. My dad was prone to be easily inspired to get in the car – a 1955 Buick sedan the size of a railroad car – and go. Weston, VT, is a good example. He and my mom read about a place called The Vermont Country Store in this small village on the southern edge of central Vermont. Therefore, when he had the chance, we went there. This was in the early 1960s, at a time when US Route 5 was the major highway. The old highway system was far less sterile than the interstate highway that replaced them. Built through towns and cities, you certainly had the opportunity to see a lot. There were always plenty of attractions along those US highways. I distinctly remember seeing signs in Arizona for a “giant jack rabbit” a hundred miles out from the place that housed it. By the time we got there I had driven my dad nuts as I insisted, we needed to see it. I still use Routes 5, 20 and 202 as much as time allows. Along the way to Weston my mom and dad would stop at any other place that had the potential for discovery. I remember going to a wooden bowl manufacturer in Weston – my dad was a second-generation furniture maker – as well as other shops. By the way, The Vermont Country Store in Weston is still selling its wares – many unique to them – and is still a stop on a lot of road trips. My guess is the road trip really came into its own with the end of WWII, the return of people to civilian lives, the subsequent expansion of the suburbs and the growth in automobile culture all in the 1950s. More than ever the car became only secondary to the home in terms of importance to a family. I think with the hopeful end of the pandemic we will see more people hitting the open road at least to explore the region around them and Go Local is ready. We’re ready to send you to Hadley, MA, East Granby, CT, Northampton, MA and Ellington, CT, among other locations. I guarantee once you’re at any of these points of destination you will find other attractions. For years I’ve seen the sign on I-91 about the New-Gate Prison historic site and I’ve felt the tug of going there since I’m a history buff. The story in this issue sealed the deal and I will go there sometime this summer. I also must try the Strong Avenue area in Northampton as well. And I’ve always wanted to go to the New England Falconry. So, I guess it’s time to fire up the Hyundai Accent – the ’55 Buick is long gone – and hit the road. Hope to see you along the way. 6 GO LOCAL JULY 2021

ining “alfresco” - loosely translated in Italian to mean “in fresh air” - is a popular summertime activity when eating outdoors becomes a welcome option for those who want to break bread and enjoy a cooling libation with friends and family. While many restaurants, pubs and cafes in New England have long offered outdoor seating on decks and patios, the expanding practice took on new meaning last year during the COVID-19 pandemic as struggling businesses looked for new ways to attract diners and keep them safe.

Many cities and towns last summer as the pandemic raged allowed for temporary outdoor dining to occur as they eased outdoor drinking and dining regulations to allow for makeshift patio spaces and the use of sidewalks, parking lots, on-street public parking areas and more for alfresco dining. Despite the fact that most restaurants around the country are now open for fullcapacity dining as the number of new coronavirus cases is at an all-time low, alfresco dining is back with a vengeance as eating outside last season was a big hit with diners. This summer in Northampton,

the concept has extended to partially closing Strong Avenue, a popular dining destination, and creating a lush, green oasis called “Summer on Strong.” The brainchild of Eastside Grill owner Deb Flynn, the attractive and welcoming remodeled roadway - approximately 0.7 miles long - stretches from the intersection of Strong Avenue and Main Street to the public lot next to Eastside, where vehicle traffic is now shut down. It is adorned with numerous plants and walking and biking room is expanded, allowing for more outdoor dining, live music and pedestrian-friendly shopping. “The plan was actually born this GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 13

winter when asking the question, ‘How are we going to get through another year of COVID-19 and creatively make more dining spaces for customers,” said Robbie Bocon, general manager of Eastside, which has been serving robustly flavored, seasonal American cuisine since 1985. “It was a brand-new idea that gave people another reason to come to Strong Avenue, as well as attracting new clientele through our doors.” Gathering support from the businesses on Strong Avenue and others for her idea, Flynn and Bocon were able to gain quick approval from Northampton Mayor David Narkewicz for their vision, which was granted in April by the Northampton License Commission. In the days and weeks ahead, plans were refined, $23,000 had to be raised to get the project off the ground, goods and services had to be purchased, and publicity had to be arranged for the opening in late May. “Everyone loves it. The site is busy with people sitting around and enjoying a few beers with their food, in our case a burger or hot dog and fries, while listening to music. Restaurants are hurting and we needed this,” said Joe Igneri, co-owner of Local Burger. As for the music to soothe the soul and bring an added ambiance to the avenue, $9,500 of the money raised went toward booking musicians to perform at the Dowd Performance Stage. Offered throughout the summer on Wednesday and Thursday from 5-8 p.m. and on Sundays from 3-6 p.m., a variety of musicians will be on tap performing a selection of blues, country, folk, jazz and more. And speaking of “on tap,” Progression Brewery, which is actually located nearby on Pearl Street, has rolled their beer truck onto the avenue to pour some refreshing brews for those who want to imbibe. “We will be serving up six different styles of beer plus craft hard seltzer,” said Drew Starkweather about the artisanal craft brewery that he founded with master brewer Todd Sullivan. Among the cooling libations being poured at what Starkweather calls their “tap wagon” are their popular Noon Juice, which is a Session New England IPA, and their new Cape Time, another New England IPA, which he described as a “vacation in a can.” “People seem to be really enjoying themselves in the laid back, relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere that has been created. We have not fully recovered from COVID-19 and its effects on indoor dining. Even though things have opened up, indoor business is still not flourishing as before, so introducing more outdoor spaces in a beautiful environment is important for our recovery,” Starkweather said. Whether stopping by Strong Avenue to enjoy a cup of specialty coffee or tea along with a scrumptious breakfast or lunch sandwich from Familiars Coffee & Tea, a delicious pan roasted fresh New England Cod dish accompanied by just-picked local asparagus from 14 GO LOCAL JULY 2021

Homestead, or for a multi-course, leisurely evening meal of chicken etouffee or seafood risotto at East Side Grill, all alfresco under a bright red umbrella if you choose, Summer at Strong appears to be the go-to summer destination for many diners looking for a fresh, new dining experience. “Summer on Strong is the perfect example of why I moved from Boston to a smaller city like Northampton to open my restaurant, where businesses come together and collaborate as a team for their betterment and that of the city. Restaurants are the heart of a city, and we need people flocking back to us,” said Jeremy Werther, chef and owner of Homestead. While parking is always a concern in any bustling city - about 8,500 New York City parking spots were blocked by roadside dining sheds during the pandemic - Mayor Narkewicz noted there are spaces where people can park nearby and walk to Strong Avenue, including off-street lots and the E. John Gare Parking Garage on Armory Street. “This is a great example that shows that prioritizing pedestrians and outdoor dining and entertainment over parking, people will find a place to come be here,” he said in a recent story on MassLive.com marking the opening of “Summer on Strong.” Summer on Strong is expected to run at least through Labor Day, longer if an extension is granted. “I think we’ve created a successful blueprint for others to follow,” Bocon said.

New England

Falconry ! JULIE SOFORENKO  NATE BLAIS

F

alconry conjures ideas of faraway lands and distant times. An ancient hunter and his trusted falcon capturing prey to bring home. A medieval prince riding through his royal forest and admiring his falcon soar. Right off I-91, your entryway to this unique sport awaits. New England Falconry, founded and directed by Master Falconer Chris Davis, gives every person, whether they’re 5 or 95, the chance to not only watch, but handle birds of prey in a wildflower-covered meadow in Hadley, MA. On a hot, sunny Saturday morning, water bottle in hand, I take a seat on a wooden bench under a shady tree. Fragrant multiflora rose bushes form a natural wall behind me. Two chocolate brown Harris’s hawks with white-tipped tail feathers are tethered to perches a couple yards in front of me. The experience begins here, with Chris relating engaging, in-depth information about raptors to our group. We learn

that “raptor” is another term for “birds of prey”. It encompasses over 35 types of falcon, in addition to species such as hawk, eagle, owl, osprey, and more. We learn that raptors have double the number of neck vertebrae as humans so they can turn their heads 3/4 of the way around. Their eyes have evolved to see UV light, so excretion trails literally glow for them, which helps to track their prey. “Quite frankly, birds of prey have been the obsession of my life. I grew up on a farm and there were lots of raptors around. I started learning about falconry from very early on, maybe by the time I was seven or eight years old.” It was a natural progression for Chris to follow the long path to become a master falconer. To achieve this rank, Chris had to pass a challenging written exam, apprentice with a licensed falconer for 2 years, and trap his first bird. In the wild, 70% of juvenile raptors don’t make it through their first winter. So when a licensed falconer acquires one for train-

ing, it has zero effect on the overall wild population. After graduating from college, Chris became an educator, doing multi-raptor programs for schools and libraries. “After some years, an opportunity came up to do hands-on falconry education in Vermont. I took the job and found it to be very satisfying. A year and a half later I decided to return to Massachusetts and start my own hands-on business.” “I train and fly Harris’s hawks here in Hadley. They’re a unique raptor in that they’re a social raptor. They’ve evolved to hunt cooperatively.” In Jennifer Ackerman’s book about bird intelligence, The Genius of Birds, she talks about the two main factors that determine whether a bird species will be highly intelligent. One is foraging or difficulty in getting food, and the second is social systems. The Harris’s hawk has both. Native to South America, Central America, and the American Southwest, GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 19

the Harris’s hawk has to survive harsh desert conditions, often hunting jackrabbit as prey. Since a jackrabbit weighs between 6 - 10 pounds and an adult Harris’s hawk weighs 1.5 - 2 pounds, reciprocal altruism really comes in handy. Reciprocal altruism is the foundation of their social system. It’s pretty much, my actions need to benefit both you and me in order to survive. Another wildlife example would be a wolf pack. Harris’s hawks live together as a family group, hunt together, share food, and protect each other. In the wild, where cactus branches are limited in number, the birds sometimes perch on top of each other to roost, stacking up to three birds high. Their collaborative nature makes Harris’s hawks the ideal raptor for Chris to fly at New England Falconry. “Neither of the two hawks I fly in Hadley has ever shown any aggression to anybody whatsoever. In fact, I fly with kids as young as five. I hold their gloved hand on at least the first flight and then, when they’re comfortable, they can have that firsthand raptor experience on their own while I stand close by”. “The basics are, I give the instruction and set a bird free. The bird follows us out to where we’re gonna fly. I instruct someone to raise the glove. If the bird is not occupied by hunting, and there’s a lot of stuff out there right now, the bird flies over to the glove for a little bit of meat”. 20 GO LOCAL JULY 2021

“They’re very independent,” Chris chuckles, “and although these aren’t hunting sessions for small game like I offer in the fall, there’s lots of stuff that they’re catching or at least making attempts at catching.” “A raptor in the wild is only successful maybe 20% of the time, but they put in a good chase and that’s a really cool part of the experience. I interpret out loud what the bird’s doing and what behaviors it’s showing. This isn’t just a flight to the glove, but a lot extra in terms of seeing up close and with expert interpretation what these natural behaviors are. It’s a very dynamic, fun, and unpredictable exchange.” Now in the open field, we watch as the hawk preens in a nearby tree. Song birds serenade us as we wait. The training kicks in when he hears Chris’s strong whistle and sees a participant’s raised arm. He shakes his tail feathers and swoops low, circling just over our heads where there’s less wind resistance. He lands and swallows his reward. His beak stays parted while he quietly pants, the same cooling technique that a dog has. Poised on the glove, hawk and woman make eye contact, observing each other in stillness. After a few more moments, the hawk’s head turns. He raises his curved, aerodynamic shoulders, spreads his glossy wings, and soars. Three types of sessions are available: the 45-minute intro session, the 1.5-hour extended session, and from late October through December, the 3-hour small game hunting session. You can book a weekend session through the website, newenglandfalconry.com. To book a private session, weekday session, or if you’ve been lucky enough to get a gift certificate for a falconry experience, call or email Chris directly to schedule.

Check It Out New England Falconry in Hadley, MA is open from April through July, and then from September through December every year. GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 21

OLD NEW-GATE PRISON &

COPPER MINE !  VICKI MITCHELL

W

ant to visit a really cool place this summer? Then pay a visit to the newly reopened and updated Old New-Gate Prison and Copper Mine in East Granby, Connecticut. The year round temperature in the former underground prison and copper mine is a refreshing 52 degrees. This facility has been known as many things…the first chartered copper mine, the first state prison, a “school of rogues,” a National Historic Landmark, and a place where prisoners managed to escape from on a seemingly regular basis! A recent visit to the site revealed visitors of all ages enjoying this unique tourist attraction, from the self-guided tours of the yards and buildings, to the guided underground tour of the mine, the bucolic setting complete with picnic tables, and the small but well stocked gift shop. A display GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 27

table of colorful rock and mineral samples (at rock bottom prices) enthralled the youngest visitors, as did the collection of books and toy bats that recall the mammals that still frequent the mines during their winter hibernation. According to Morgan Bengel, the museum’s curator and site manager, “We are really excited to be welcoming visitors again…this site is a unique cultural asset that allows visitors to explore timeless stories of those who have been incarcerated here, viewed with both an historic and modern lens.” She added, “We have installed new interpretive panels in the prison yard and the grounds beyond the prison walls. They…help interpret the ruins and structures on the site.” They have also added the Connecticut Hall of Change (https://www.cthallofchange.org/) which is a place to recognize and honor formerly incarcerated men and women who have made a great positive impact in their communities. The prison was originally a copper mine, which operated on and off from about 1705 to the 1750’s, mostly unsuccessfully. In 1773, the North American colonists decided to use the site of the copper mine as a prison, and a “trial and error” period ensued. The goal of the prison was to “securely confine, profitably employ, and reform…” the prisoners, who consisted of horse thieves, robbers, counterfeiters, and, of course, Loyalists! An overseer’s report, dated 1773 stated that, “We have been appointed to explore the copper mines and determined, ‘…whether they may be beneficially applied to the purpose of confining, Securing and profitably employing Such Criminals and Delinquents as may be Committed to them by future Law or Laws in lieu of the infamous punishments…’ ” The first warden was Captain John Viets, a member of the militia. Conditions in the mines, and therefore the prison, were dark and rocky, the temperature hovered at 52 degrees, and the deepest parts of the tunnels were 75’ underground. It was described by former prisoners as “secure but inhumane,” with stories of starvation, filthy conditions, and shackles that wore away the skin. The youngest prisoners were only 14 years old. It is questionable as to how secure the prison actually was in its early years, since within its first year of operation, the following Overseer’s Report (1774) was submitted: “Your honors must have heard that the prisoners have all escaped… it would be long and perhaps difficult in writing to give a particular and distinct account how this was done: your honors will excuse us if we only say that they effected their escape by the help of evil minded persons abroad before the necessary and proper 28 GO LOCAL JULY 2021

securities could be completed.” (Overseers Report, 1774) The first prisoner of record was 20 year old John Hinson, convicted of robbery and sentenced to 10 years. He was imprisoned on December 22, 1773 and escaped on January 9, 1774, after all of 19 days! He escaped in the middle of the night, most likely with some outside help. The last escape attempt before the prison closed in 1827 was by Abel Starkey, a counterfeiter who fell to his death during the attempt. It is rumored that he had amassed $100.00 while in prison (equivalent to over $2,000 today) but had only $50.00 in his possession when his body was recovered. Possibly, he used the rest to bribe someone to leave the hatch door leading to freedom open. It is even rumored that his ghost wanders the tunnels of the mine today! The day after Starkey’s death, New-Gate Prison was closed and the inmates were transferred to Wethersfield. Today, the site’s brochure states that “a 12 foot high masonry perimeter wall encompasses the one-acre prison yard, featuring a rehabilitated two-story guardhouse, the standing ruins of four other buildings …and the entrance to the underground copper mine. The dank mine tunnels, menacing perimeter walls, and hulking prison ruins still convey an environment of confinement and awe.” It is highly recommended that you wear sturdy and non-slip shoes for the underground tour, which is chilly and damp. Bring a picnic lunch and make a day of it! There are restrooms available in the museum.

Old New-Gate Prison & Copper Mine is located at 115 Newgate Road, East Granby, CT Contact Morgan Bengel at 860-655-1591 or Morgan.Bengel@ct.gov Museum Hours are Friday through Monday from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm and on Thursdays from 12:00 pm to 6:00 pm Adult tickets are $10 with discounts for seniors and youth. Active military, veterans and teachers are free

GARDEN MARKET

ce-cream, fresh flowers and produce, local honey, freshly baked pies, quality meat and fish, and more can be found at Dzen’s Garden Market in Ellington, Connecticut. Pickyour-own berry fields are just down the road. The Market, according to brothers Joe and Donny Dzen, “is a great place to get the freshest produce in the area.” In addition to the produce, they sell raw wildflower honey from an apiary which places their hives on the Dzen farm to pollinate the fruit and pumpkin crops. “It’s very popular and effective in controlling spring allergies,” says Joe. The Market also offers freshly baked Granny’s Pies, and quality meats and fish from near-by Bogner’s Meats. Milk, bread and eggs round out the shopping experience. The soft serve ice-cream stand at the Market offers over 40 flavors, including cheesecake, maple nut, German chocolate, amaretto, rum, and various fruit flavors. Toppings made from fresh berries in season are available along with GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 33

the standard embellishments. You can also indulge in milk shakes and sundaes all summer long! The produce market opened in early June with the ripening of the strawberries. In addition to customers picking their own berries, the fruit is purchased by other local farms for their stands, and Dzen’s has proudly provided the berries for the South Windsor Strawberry Festival since it began over 30 years ago. When strawberry season winds down, blueberry season begins in July and runs into mid-August. Every year, “thousands of families and friends from New Jersey to Maine and everyone in between head down to the Dzen Blueberry Hill fields to pick their own berries. For many, it’s a summer tradition, and for our family, it’s a source of pride watching everyone enjoy our plentiful harvests…” say the brothers. The Dzen family business was founded in the 1930’s by Steven and Mary Dzen, followed by son Donald Dzen. Now, Donald’s sons Joe and Donny have become third generation farmers, and together they oversee the farm’s various enterprises. Don is primarily responsible for the farm, while Joe is primarily responsible for the store. They work together during the busy seasons, which opens with growing and selling flowers for Easter and runs through to Christmas with their tree farm. The original farm grew potatoes and tobacco, and raised dairy cows. They began growing strawberries and Christmas trees in the 1970’s and added the blueberry fields around 1980. The Garden Market opened in 1998, and the family began growing their own greenhouse flowers a few years later. Phew…sounds like a lot of work, doesn’t it? Just how much land is farmed to provide all of this bounty? The family owns 300 acres and leases an additional 200 acres. They use 25 acres for their strawberries, 15 acres for blueberries, 200 acres for pumpkins in the fall, and over 100 acres for Christmas trees, for starters. The 10,000 sf greenhouse provides bedding and vegetable plants, herbs, mixed planters, deck pots, hanging baskets, and flowers used for custom gift baskets. The brothers say they are well known for their beautiful geraniums. They are assisted by about 20 seasonal employees at the store, and 20 full and part-time employees on the farm itself. The farm offers wholesale pumpkins in 34 GO LOCAL JULY 2021

the fall, which they sell both locally and deliver throughout the East coast. In addition to sugar pumpkins and “face pumpkins,” they also grow ornamental gourds, munchkins, and squash. When the Christmas season rolls around, many families head to one of the Dzen tree farms to cut their own tree. The farms are located in East Windsor, South Windsor, and Ellington, and you can choose from four different varieties of firs and spruces. During the off-season, much time is spent selecting the variety and color of plants to be offered the following year, as well as tending to the many details of running the successful business. After all is said and done, the brothers say the hardest part of the business is the uncertainty of things beyond their control, such as the weather. On the plus side, they both enjoy working together and all the time spent outdoors. They take pride in growing high quality farm products for the community, and are excited to see their children taking an interest in the family business. They hope to welcome a 4th generation to the Dzen family farm!
