FROM THE MANAGING EDITOR . G. MICHAEL DOBBS
Yes, I know New Year’s is a big deal. We mark a new beginning by partying, followed by the pledging of resolutions. Then we endure more winter. For me and maybe others, the real start to any new year is spring. For New Englanders, spring has always been a celebratory season. It’s seen as the official start of a new year with the return of new life. Now, we know spring here can be, shall we say, “challenging?” Mark Twain wrote while witnessing a New England spring, “In the spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours.” None-the-less we look forward to a return of life. The leaves on the trees are just a tip of the iceberg for the coming of the new season. Writer and musician Henry Rollins once said, “In winter, I plot and plan. In spring I move.” This spring I’m feeling confident, with the pandemic and vaccinations, to go back to the gym. Hauling my ancient corpulent frame back to an exercise plan is not easy or fun, but I readily admit it does make me feel better. I’m staring out into the large back yard we have and seeing the tulips bloom, which is always a cause for celebration. Spring is the time to look at the garden space you have and evaluate what you’re going to do. In our case, my wife and I are letting part of the lawn area go wild. There is a good reason to this other than my laziness. Allowing the grass to grow gives a more natural environment that’s good for beneficial insects such as bees to have a chance to prosper. Every garden area needs pollinating bees to allow to thrive. I’m giving thought to the vegetable garden and what to plant – another annual ritual. Maybe I’ll just put in flowers this year and buy my fresh vegetables from farmers markets. A side effect to spring has been the urge to get out on the road. I still have to temper my plans as the pandemic isn’t over yet, but I am hankering to have a day trip or two. Another sides-effect has been the compulsion to clean. I’ve gathered things together for a late spring, social distanced tag sale and have cleaned carpets, dusted long-neglected items and tossed stuff out. It’s felt good. This spring issue of Go Local has some very appropriate features that reflect the idea of new beginnings. We have two stories about physical self-improvement through nutrition and exercise, a Go Local Picks page featuring three one-day road trips, as well a story about the reopening of a unique entertainment venue. We include in this issue a wedding guide, which always seem spring-like in nature, as weddings are definitely new beginnings.

ho doesn’t want to visit a “happy place” today in a world where uncertainty looms over everyone as the coronavirus continues its deadly toll. Fortunately, there is a “happy place” to be found at Elite Nutrition in East Longmeadow that will not only make you smile, but possibly improve your health. “I like to call Elite Nutrition a happy place for all. We do our very best to keep your visit upbeat and positive, and if you came to us upset, we want you to leave happy and with a smile,” said owner Crystal Jimenez about the smoothie and juice bar she founded in 2019. Her introduction to protein shakes and teas happened just the year before. “I was in desperate need to find something to help me lead a healthier, active lifestyle. I have a young son and wanted more energy so that I could keep up with him. That’s when I began to drink protein shakes and teas, which helped me to lose weight and build my energy levels” she said. For those not in the know, Healthline, a popular health information website, describes high protein shakes as boosting metabolism because a lot of energy is spent digesting and metabolizing the protein. High protein shakes also help you build muscle, which burns more calories than fat. Also, researchers generally agree that high-protein diets can help you lose more weight and belly fat. Protein shakes may also prevent muscle loss and metabolic slowdown. “I was so pleased with how I was feeling that I wanted to share that healthy feeling I was now experiencing with others. I determined the best way to do that was to open my own storefront,” Jimenez said. So, Jimenez took a leap of faith and left a secure, full-time job where she had been working for the past five years. She began looking in different areas of Springfield and Westfield where she might locate her shop. “Every time I walked into a potential site, it didn’t feel like the right fit. I was about to sign a lease in Springfield one day, but my heart really wasn’t in it. Luckily that same day I received a call about a hair salon in East Longmeadow that was downsizing and leaving a space available for rent. Just

by looking in the window I knew this was the right place,” she added, noting a nearby bicycle trail which would help to bring in customers. Today her shop serves up healthy, low sugar, shakes that at under 300 calories can serve as a meal replacement, and energizing teas with no sugar in a variety of flavors. “Our smoothies taste good and look appetizing,” Jimenez said. “How To Make A Smoothie 101” at Elite Nutrition goes something like this: Take your base protein mix, customize it with different flavored Stevia products to give the shakes their unique taste, then simply add water and ice and blend. “Ours don’t taste like some normal chalky protein shakes, they taste more like having a dessert. Some of our customers tell us they feel as if they just had an ice cream, but a healthier version without all the calories. Others tell us they were craving a hamburger or something not good for them, but came here instead to enjoy something healthy,” Jimenez said. When customers walk through the doorway at Elite Nutrition, they see an entire menu of different protein shakes and energizing teas on a board before them. They are all made from scratch right before your eyes, and you only have to wait a minute or two until they are mixed to perfection. Shake choices are grouped into five categories: Bakery Shop, Breakfast Shop, Candy Shop, Coffee Shop and Fruit Shop with more than 30 tastetempting, sweet tooth delights to tickle almost any palate. There is Birthday Cake, Cookie Dough, Oatmeal Raisin Cookie, Fruity Pebbles, Rice Crispy Treat, Snickers, Twix, Peppermint Patty, Mocha Latte, Jamocha Macchiato, Chunky Monkey Banana Split, Strawberry Pina Colada and endless others. As for all the nutrition packed into the shakes, they have 24g of protein, under 300 calories, 9g of sugar, 4.5g fat, 21 vitamins, 13 carbs and 5g fiber. And most can be made gluten free. “We also offer post-workout protein shakes. These are for people who, after going to the gym, stop in for a high protein shake that is 38 grams of protein compared to our normal 24 grams, which helps them to recover and build muscle after a good workout,” Jimenez said. “The come in chocolate, vanilla and strawberry shortcake and you can add PB2 to any post workout selection,” she added. PB2 is a powdered peanut butter - containing 85% fewer calories from fat - that is made by pressing out most of the natural oils from roasted peanuts and then grinding the nuts into a fine powder. For teetotalers looking for a cooling libation on a hot summer’s day or a warming cup in the cold of 14 GO LOCAL MAY 2021
winter, there are Elite Nutrition’s energizing teas. “These are caffeinated and healthy, just as if you are enjoying a caffeinated flavored tea with no sugar, but we can sweeten them with aloe,” Jimenez said. Flavors include pomegranate, raspberry, lemon, peach, cinnamon and chai that can be sweetened with cranberry, mango or mandarin aloe. Tea drinkers can also opt for boosted/lit teas. “These are healthy guarana teas made from a black tea extract that gives you amazing energy without the crash you often get with coffee. These teas also offer you an increased mental focus and clarity. They are great for your gut health and we can also sweeten them with aloe,” Jimenez said. The boosted/lit teas are lime-, orange-, tropical-, or pomegranate-based with a variety of flavors including Blue Breeze, Gummy Bear, Sour Patch, Skittles, Tsunami, Pineapple Peach, Captain America, Pink Panther, Very Berry Splash and Warhead. The energizing teas, all gluten free, have 5-15 calories and no carbs, sugar or fat, while the boosted/lit teas have 29-40 calories, 4.5 carbs, less than 1g of sugar, and no fat. For those who want a little more, there are protein bites - maybe Oreo Peanut Butter or PB Confetti on any one day that pair nicely with a refreshing energizing beverage or one of their tasty shakes. While many customers stop in for “grab and go” - you can also call your orders in ahead - there are tables and chairs for people who want to sit and hang out for a spell. “You’ll often find high school kids coming in to do their homework while having something to drink,” Jimenez said. To add a little fun to the menu, Jimenez recently introduced what she is calling Mystery Monday. You place your order and if you have them pick your shake, tea, or combo, you receive $1 off your order. However, you can tell them which flavors you like or don’t like….then leave it up to them. Elite Nutrition is located at 130 Shaker Road in East Longmeadow. Hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Broad Brook
OPERA HOUSE ! VICKI MITCHELL
H
ave you been experiencing the blues during the long social isolation imposed by COVID -19? Are you jazzed about attending live music shows again? Well then, get ready to rock, and pop over to the Broad Brook Opera House in Connecticut for live musical entertainment in a very impressive setting! The Broad Brook Opera House, owned by Tom and Lesa Kuhns, and assisted by their daughter Victoria Kania as Event Coordinator, has been lovingly updated and restored. The Opera House, built in 1892 by the Broad Brook Company, which manufactured textiles, is an example of a Queen Anne style building. It served as a salesroom for company products in the front area, and the rear housed the shipping department. The top floor served as a
community hall, and was the social center of the neighborhood. It hosted, among other events, dances, basketball games, minstrel shows, school graduations, and homecoming events for servicemen and women from as far back as WWI and II. In 1920, when the company relocated their sales and shipping departments back to the main mill complex, the Opera House began many years of housing a variety of other businesses and organizations. The initial occupants were Tyler’s Pharmacy and Ice Cream Parlor, the Post Office, and Sargent’s Shoe Store. More recent occupants have included a barbershop, an insurance office, and a local musical theatre group, the Opera House Players, now located in Enfield. According to Kania, the basement of the building “was home for the Broad Brook 19
Weightlifting Club, once upon a time. The most notable rumor is that the great Houdini had performed right here at the Opera House.” Tom Kuhns bought the building in December of 2002, and slowly began the transition and renovations necessary to make the site an events venue, hosting weddings and other special occasions. When COVID -19 shut all such events down, it afforded the family a chance to complete the renovations it had started, leading to the amazing facility it is today. While the Opera House will still be available for private event rental, the family says availability will be subject to the live entertainment they are now focused on. The shows will be held upstairs in the newly named Timber Room, which houses the stage, tables and chairs, and a bar. A comfortable lounge area on the main floor will serve as the performer’s green room, where they can gather and relax before and between shows. The Kuhns have installed an exceptional lighting and sound system, working with Craig Jeppesen of JepAudio. “A system this size needs a professional, and Craig will be on site for every live event to ensure there are not any issues with the sound or light show that accompanies the acts!” says Kania. “The acoustics in this room are amazing,” enthused Kuhns, who is also excited about the light show accompanying the musical performances. The musical line-up is being handled by booking agent Greg Hazelton of Copper Hill Productions. He 20 GO LOCAL MAY 2021
and Jeppesen are high school buddies, now working with the Kuhns family on their new venture. The grand reopening show at the Opera House was held in April, and featured the band One Time Weekend. For now, the Opera House plans to host a few shows per month, according to Kania. “When we can get past the restrictions and obstacles the virus has thrown towards the live events industry, we plan to establish residency type talent and have shows more frequently. We’d like to get to do a comedy night once a week and a ‘local’ night monthly.” The Opera House will be following whatever health guidelines the State of Connecticut has in effect at the time of each show. Shows this month include the Beatles tribute band Ticket to Ride on May 15th, and Saskia Laroo and Glenn Roth on the 29th. Kunia explains, “Saskia is a Dutch jazz musician! She splits her time between Connecticut and the Netherlands. She’s quite talented and definitely has a unique performance. Glenn Roth is a fingerstyle guitarist who is a Connecticut native. He’s toured all over the northeast and has a lifetime permit to the MTA’s underground, meaning he can play in NYC Grand Central Station and on the subway platforms.” Coming up in June are Auburn Mode on the 12th playing a “fusion of progressive and energetic folk pop;” and Last Child on the 18th, an Aerosmith Experience. Also this summer, the Opera House will be celebrating Jerry Day (as in Jerry Garcia) with music provided by Steelhead and Shakedown. Go to bbohct.com under the live events tab for dates and details of upcoming shows and events. A concession stand will be offering snacks such as local pizza, hot dogs, nachos, candy and the like, and the bar will be featuring local and craft beers, and canned cocktails and soda. Kania says, “We plan to do a collaboration with Broad Brook Brewing for our very own beer. We’ll have a launch party when that comes to fruition.” The most exciting part of the family’s venture in this new direction, says Kania, “beyond the obvious of finally getting to open in the post-COVID world, would be all the people we get to meet and interact with. Regardless of anyone’s background or beliefs, people connect through music and we’re happy to be a big part of that for this region.”

PIZZERIA AND RISTORANTE ! VICKI MITCHELL

t all started in a little town outside of Naples, Italy. Bracigliano, known for its tasty pizza and Italian food, was home to the Ferrentino family. When the Ferrentinos made their way to America in the 1970’s, their authentic family recipes came with them, and formed the basis for the family’s successful group of restaurants in Massachusetts and Connecticut. With the March opening of Mario’s Pizzeria and Ristorante in Somers, Connecticut, business partners Mario Ferrentino and Nikko Plescia have added to the legacy begun by Alfonso and Teresa Ferrentino when they opened Teresa’s Restaurant in 1980 in Ware, Massachusetts. Since then, Ferrentino family members have GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 27
opened Francesco’s Restaurants in Suffield, Connecticut and Brimfield, Massachusetts. Mario Ferrentino, of course, grew up working in the family restaurants, and Nikko began working at Teresa’s when he was only 15 years old, eventually becoming a close family friend. He says, “I started out at Teresa’s as a dish boy as a young teenager, and put my time in and worked my way up to be able to make pizzas, and cook dinners behind the line. I worked off and on at Teresa’s for many years, and when Mario approached me about the opportunity of partnering up on a new place in Somers, it was something I couldn’t pass up.” They both have a very hands-on role at Mario’s. Together, they gutted the site of the former pizzeria located in the Southfield Corners Shops, and now, Mario says, “everything is brand new in the kitchen and dining room. We have true Italian food, using family recipes that came over from the old country. All of our family’s restaurants are built on the word “family.” At their places they all have family portions, family atmosphere, and of course, family recipes. All of our family’s establishments have a lot of similar menu items, with recipes being passed down from generation to generation. That being said, each place also has its own unique style that sets it apart from the others.” He added, “A major difference between Mario’s and the rest of our family’s restaurants is that we offer delivery service. Delivery is something we felt was definitely necessary, with no one else really delivering in the town of Somers.” The partners shared that they import several ingredients from Italy, such as pasta, olive oil, and tomatoes for their sauces. They also plan to “buy a lot of fresh produce from the great farm community in Somers” during the growing season. Happily, they have been very busy during their first few months of business. When asked what they thought were the most popular items on the menu, they responded, “The most popular items at Mario’s is hard to say. We obviously emphasize our pizzas, but at the same time we are so much more than that. Our menu consists of salads, soups, wings, grinders, pastas, and a lot of 28 GO LOCAL MAY 2021
classic Italian dinner entrees. We take pride in everything we send out to our customers.” As far as their own favorites on the menu, Mario said, “My favorite dish on the menu would have to be ‘The Olivia’ pizza. In my opinion there is nothing better than homemade Italian eggplant, and when you add tomatoes, mozzarella, spices, and fresh basil it just takes it to the next level. It has become a runaway favorite at Mario’s so far.” Nikko’s favorite menu item “would have to be the Nikko’s A La Vodka pasta dish. When coming up with the menu for Mario’s, it was definitely the one that came to mind when picking an item I wanted named after myself. It is made fresh to order, and has definitely been a hit so far.” He also favors their bone-in chicken wings, and by the way, their “gold fever” wings feature a tangy BBQ sauce. They also come in a choice of other flavors, such as sweet chili, garlic parmesan, Cajun, plain, and of course, Buffalo. Many of their dishes feature Nini’s (Mario’s mother) house-made tomato sauce, one of the “secret family recipes” offered on their menu. If there’s room for dessert, cannoli’s are available every day, as well as a daily dessert special, which may be tiramisu, cheesecake, chocolate mousse cake, or other favorites. A typical day for the partners “includes getting to the restaurant early in the morning to prepare for the day. With our menu consisting of a lot of house-made items, preparation time is key to make sure we get a lot of things done prior to opening the doors. It’s definitely time consuming and a lot of work, but it’s all worth it when you hear customers say how much they really enjoyed the food. Hearing positive feedback from our great customers is the best part of our job, and makes those long days and nights worth it.”

Grilled Cajun Shrimp Cocktail
1/2 pound frozen shrimp, raw
Thaw out your shrimp, a quick easy method is to run lukewarm water over
1-2 tbsp Cajun seasoning (use your favorite)
them and they will thaw very quick. Pat shrimp dry and toss in seasoning
2 tbsp olive oil
and olive oil. If I’m cooking them on an outdoor grill I will skewer them which makes the grilling process a lot easier, but if you have a grill pan and want to use that you can just throw them on there. Preheat your grill and make sure it’s nice and hot, cook shrimp for about 2 minutes per side, let cool and then let them chill in the fridge for about half an hour. Serve with cocktail sauce or mix together some cajun seasoning with mayo. Perfect for a summer app! NATHAN BLAIS I’m a photographer from Springfield. MOVEMENT TERRAIN
! KEITH O’CONNOR NATE BLAIS
I
t’s not just your average gym. “We have people who come here from New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and beyond for a unique experience they can’t get anywhere else near them,” said Brian Miller, owner of Movement Terrain OCR Fitness in Wilbraham. “We’re quite different in a way that we are not only a gym where you would go for general fitness…..weight training…..a great workout…..but we have 10,000 square feet of obstacles that you won’t find anywhere else. The reasons why anyone comes to Movement Terrain vary from strictly the fitness aspect to families looking for a fun active time,” he added. Miller equates a “fun active time” to picking up a basketball game outside with friends….. something you don’t think of as a workout, but in a sense it is. “Again, that’s what makes us different, we’re not just about health and fitness, but about having a good time in the process. In the end, I believe that provides greater sustainability because you are enjoying what you are doing,” Miller said.
Movement Terrain opened in July 2017 after Miller left his job as a machine shop manager to become his own boss and bring an entirely new fitness experience for cross-training, mud run loving adults, Ninja Warrior kids, and for families looking for some “fun” to put into a workout. “I was already doing some personal training on the side and had pursued various certifications over the years, but fitness training wasn’t something at the time that I wanted to do full time. I was always of the thought that you go to work for someone else and as a result have some stability in your life,” Miller said. But then things changed. “I took part with some friends in a Rugged Maniac obstacle course. It was fun and amazing and I got a good workout. Before that time I had never gone to any gym or event where there was so much camaraderie among so many athletes of differing levels working together and helping each other. I began to wonder if there were any indoor places where you could train for one of these events, but it took me 4-5 years to make the move,” Miller said. GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 31
Movement Terrain wasn’t Miller’s first choice for naming his new business. “I originally came up with the name Extreme Obstacle Gym, then I thought we were not only for extreme people and not just about obstacles. So, I started thinking about movement, and whether people were coming here to lift weights or climb over obstacles that it was really all about movement,” Miller said. Today the one-time personal trainer equates their indoor obstacles to the popular national Rugged Maniac, also known as a mud run, and Spartan races held outdoors. As part of the challenging courses, contestants maneuver obstacles such as crawling through tunnels, jumping over logs set on fire, scaling over large walls, and other seemingly impossible challenges. In fact, the first-ever Rugged Maniac competition before going national was held in Southwick in October 2010 with over 2,000 race participants. Miller participated in the Southwick event in 2012. “The foundation of many of the obstacles we have here at Movement Terrain can be found on the popular NBC television show ‘American Ninja Warrior,’” Miller said. But you won’t find the level of outrageous obstacles, such as scaling fire, indoors at Movement Terrain. Instead there are ropes to climb, walls to climb over, rings to swing from one to the other, monkey bars, balance beams, and walls which you traverse from side to side, all of which challenge your body in various ways. Everyone has their own reasons for making Movement Terrain their place to work out. “It’s difficult to nail down the reasons why some adults walk through our doors since we have so many different things to offer them. Some members may only come for cross-training and may be intimidated by the obstacles and have no interest in them. For others who are really into training for an obstacle race, they may come to us to improve on a particular obstacle they may be failing at so they can attend their next event with the knowledge and confidence they didn’t have before,” Miller said. It is a little different for younger visitors. “Kids just want to have fun and if it’s not fun, why do it? You don’t necessarily find younger kids thinking about staying in shape or looking good, it’s all about the fun for them. They see the ‘American Ninja Warrior’ television show and think, ‘This is cool, how can I learn to do this and where?’ They bring a nice element to 32 GO LOCAL MAY 2021
the gym and, again, that is what defines us - that we cater to both adults and kids,” Miller said. Kids do primarily the same thing as adults at Movement Terrain, but at different intensity levels. In the 6-8 age group, the focus in on obstacles and some body weight exercises such as push ups, sit ups, pull ups, squats, anything using their own body weight. While for kids 9-12, the emphasis is on advanced techniques on obstacles and an introduction to weight training with actual weights. As for teens, each class is run with weight training, obstacle skills and a metcon circuit, which is actually metabolic conditioning using gymnastics moves, weights and obstacles combined. Recently Miller has been offering Nerf Wars for ages six and up that parents can even participate in along with their children. Kids are broken up into two teams, set up with different game scenarios, and then sent off on their missions. Movement Terrain is also a fun place for “Ninja Warriors” and “Spartan Kids” to celebrate their birthday. Party-goers get unlimited access to obstacles and Astroturf area for two hours. Participants can also stage their own Nerf Wars, but must bring their own equipment. There is also a party area to enjoy, but it is bring-your-own birthday cake, beverages and other food, along with plates and utensils. Parties are $250 for 15 guests and each additional participant is $15. Memberships range from $60 to $80 per month depending on a single-, three-, or six- month commitment, which includes unlimited classes and open gym. Family memberships are $90 per month with a 6-month commitment and includes unlimited classes and open gym. You can also purchase a 10-class pass for $100, which is valid for six months for classes or open gym, and a day pass for $15 which is valid for one month and is good for classes or open gym. Also, if you are looking for some one-on-one attention, Movement Terrain offers personal training for adults and kids with the goals of building muscle, burning fat, crushing obstacles, returning to a sport after injury and perfecting form. Movement Terrain is located on 176 Cottage Avenue in Wilbraham. Check their website for hours and classes.

SPECIAL TO WEDDINGS
Stamped
Weddings are about love, and the imprint you will make on each other’s hearts and lives. Imprint, inscribe, engrave, etch… all are synonymous with “stamp.” Stamped with Love XOXO is a new, local business that would love to help you make an impression with your wedding plans and beyond. It is a company founded by high school sweethearts, now husband and wife, Ben and Theresa Camerota, who are committed to making all of their customers feel special and loved. They hand make personalized rubber stamps for all occasions out of their shop in Somers, Connecticut. Perhaps you could use a personalized stamp for your shower or wedding invitations, your bachelor and bachelorette parties, thank-you cards, or as gifts for your bridal party, 42 GO LOCAL

with each recipient’s home address on their stamp. Will you need to notify people about a new home address after the wedding? Why not order a stamp to do it in a fun way, and have it to use for all your mailing needs in the future? Stamped with Love is a business born of necessity, due to COVID. As Ben Camerota explained, “When COVID hit in the spring of last year, both of our careers went downhill pretty fast. We both require live events to be successful… I run an event signage company (MVP Visuals) and my wife is a singer/ songwriter. Over the course of the year, I spent a lot of time thinking about how we could pivot to something that would
L o v e
help us both in the short-term and into the future. That led us to using a loan to purchase a small company that operated a laser engraver. In December, my wife and I drove 20 hours in a U-Haul from Atlanta, Georgia back to Somers, Connecticut with all the tools and material. From there, we decided to open an Etsy shop and focus on custom rubber stamps for homes, weddings and businesses.” Ben and Theresa are assisted in their shop by Danielle Fournier and Eileen Shaw, who worked for MVP Visuals for several years. As that business slowed down due to COVID, “it was a natural fit for them to assist with the new brand,” said Ben, “and we couldn’t have launched this without
them. Danielle typically handles customer service, quoting and designing work for our clients. Eileen works in marketing and design. Both of their skill sets fit in great with our new brand.” The new company provides stamps for, in addition to wedding related needs, business logos, return addresses, teacher needs, library and book needs, and other creative uses. The Camerotas explain, “When an order is placed in our shop, we’ll send over a digital art proof within 24 hours to make certain everything is perfect. Once you’ve approved your proof we’ll make and ship your item in one business day, and shipping is free.” All of their stamps come with a lifetime warranty. When asked what their favorite part of their new venture is, Theresa said, “I love interacting with so many small businesses. I didn’t realize how many people are creative, and the love they are trying to spread through their creations. It’s inspiring.” Ben added, “It’s great to feel excited about something new again. Creating a brand from scratch with the team and all the things that go along with it (branding, production, marketing,) has been the biggest thrill.” Orders may be placed on http://www.etsy.com/shop/ StampedwithLoveXOXO

SPECIAL TO WEDDINGS
Weddings are always happy affairs, and these days, many couples are looking for ways to personalize their special day by adding something extra to make it even more memorable. Enter the adorable mobile photo booth known as Fort Photo Booth (named after Fort Wilderness in Disney Resorts, the family’s favorite camping spot.) This high tech booth is actually a 1964 vintage Serro Scotty camper, lovingly renovated by Nick and Jackie Krasinski. The photo booth travels to events throughout Massachusetts and greater New England. Travel within 20 miles of Sturbridge is free, while venues outside of that radius
Fort
PH OTO B O OT H are assessed a travel fee.
How exactly does this adventure unroll? Clients talk to Jackie about the theme or style of their event, and book the booth for a certain amount of time, ranging from 3 to 5 hours. The photo booth uses a standard background of a sparkly silver fabric, and comes with a variety of fun props such as hats, sunglasses, and other silly items that guests can get creative with. The handheld signs provided are high-end, and may have to do with pop culture or current market trends. If a couple prefers a different background than the silver, one may be provided for
an additional cost. Guests are also welcome to supply their own themed props or decorations for the booth. The Krasinskis also provide a pavilion in case of rain, so no one has to get wet waiting for their turn in the booth. Once guests enter the booth, they can choose if they would prefer to have a 2” by 6” or 4” by 6” photo strip, or a Polaroid style square photo. Guests can email the photos to themselves, so they get a digital copy as well as a print. They also have the opportunity to make “Gifs” or “boomerangs,” which are short video clips. Jackie works with the GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 45
client to learn what the style or theme of the event is, and she can then design the photo strip to reflect that. For example, she had a bride who was “very into horses and country music,” so Jackie designed her photo strip to incorporate cowgirl boots and florals. The photos can also be customized with the clients’ names and the date of the event. The clients receive a digital file of all the photos taken in the booth, and a carved, personalized album. Guests are encouraged to sign the album, add comments, and their photos from the booth, if they choose to. The Krasinskis built the booth with the idea of doing about five weddings a year, and ended up doing 26 events their first year! 2020 “was chaotic,” of course, due to numerous cancellations as a result of COVID-19, Jackie said. Looking forward, they plan to follow guidelines set by the Baker Administration, since the business is based in Massachusetts. Jackie added, “while treading new waters during 2020, we provided sanitizing measures for all guests. We wanted everyone to be and feel safe.” According to Jackie, “I started the vintage camper photo booth to offer a creative way to have fun! It’s custom, and unique. Guests are always intrigued, and find it hysterical. A lot of our mature guests at weddings reminisce over the ‘good old days’ as the camper is from 1964. A lot of people have fond memories of those times. It’s a step back in time, yet a step into the future. “It makes me happy to hear everyone laughing inside and having a good time. I look forward to 2021, and meeting every single couple that had to reschedule their wedding. We’ve formed a bond over this…we’ll get through this together.” Find more information at www.fortphotobooth.com or email jackie@fortphotobooth.com

Weddings MAY 2021
Jewelry is a key component of weddings. The financial resource CreditDonkey notes that, in the United States, the average amount spent on an engagement ring alone is $5,500. The cost of jewelry only underscores the importance of learning how to care for it and preserve its value. The best way to maintain jewelry depends on the makeup of the rings. The online jewelry guide Jewelry Notes says gold rings without gemstones can be cleaned effectively with only soap and water. Simply prepare a solution of lukewarm water and mild dish soap in a small bowl. Soak the rings for 20 to 30 minutes. Use a soft brush or cloth to clean the jewelry of dirt. Rinse the residue under clean water. Rings with diamonds can be treated similarly with a mild soap-and-water solution. The Diamond Information Center also says to soak the diamond ring in equal parts cold water and ammonia for half an hour and let it air dry. Brand name jewelry cleaner also is another good option. This method only should be used with diamonds; ammonia can't be used with other gemstones. Maintaining jewelry also should include twice yearly visits to a jeweler who can check the prongs and make sure the setting is not loose; otherwise, the diamond can become dislodged, according to Martha Stewart Weddings. Avoid touching diamonds and other gemstones as much as possible when putting rings on and taking them off. Precious stones often are magnets for dust, dirt and body oil, according to Taylor Lanore, diamond consultant and engagement ring designer for Lauren B. Fine Jewelry and Diamonds. Grab the ring by the band. Use discretion when wearing rings while engaging in hands-on activities. Activities like cleaning dishes, moving furniture, gardening, or diving through waves at the beach warrant caution; otherwise, you risk damaging or making jewelry unnecessarily dirty. Store the ring in a safe location until you can safely wear it again. One of the most important steps to safeguard wedding and engagement rings is to insure the jewelry. Take a closeup photo of the jewelry as well. Consumers also can add a jewelry rider to a homeowner's or renter's insurance policy. These are some ways to care for wedding jewelry. Always consult with a jeweler before attempting to clean items made of various materials.
Going to the Chapel

SPECIAL TO WEDDINGS
Designer wedding gowns, veils, shoes, jewelry, and handbags…all are available at discount prices at Going to the Chapel Dress Shop in Enfield, Connecticut. Here, you will have a “high end experience without the high end price,” promises owner Ellen Humphreys. If you have a wedding, prom, or any occasion in your future that calls for a special dress, you owe it to yourself to visit this unique and charming shop. Motorists driving by the small storefront are often tempted to pull over just to admire the beautiful window displays. What sets Going to the Chapel apart
DRESS
from other stores is that all of the dresses, while new and never worn, are either floor samples, overstocks, or close-outs, resulting in substantial savings to the customers. “Your dream dress is well within reach at Going to the Chapel Dress Shop,” says Humphreys. In explaining the store’s success, Humphreys and husband, John Robinson, realized that they were “filling a niche that truly needed to be filled. Many bridal stores are closing as it is difficult and costly to carry designers. Many brides copy tag information and try to find the same dress for less money elsewhere. Here at Going to the Chapel Dress Shop
SHOP
we carry hundreds of new designer dresses in one location at 50% off retail. Every bride wants a beautiful dress, but not every bride is able or willing to spend lavishly on that dress. We strongly believe our success is a result of the experience every customer has when they come to Going to the Chapel. We treat everyone as special, regardless of what they come into the shop for. It is a no pressure, comfortable atmosphere.” You will be able to choose from over 4,000 dresses in stock, of which more than 900 are bridal gowns from designers such as Paloma, GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 49
Casablanca, Maggie Sottero, and Sassi Holford…designer to the royals. “Our new designers are Christina Wu and Venus. Our most recent purchase was the inventory from a wonderful store in Pittsburgh, the oldest bridal store in the country. They closed their doors after 133 years. Jan Winner, the owner, spent some time researching our store as well as having many conversations with John and me. It was hard for her to part with the gowns, and she wanted them to go to a good place. We received approximately 125 bridal gowns and 200 additional prom dresses from her. The bridal gowns are wonderful, especially for the budget conscious bride, as our prices are between $600 and $750.” Also available are mother-of-thebride/groom gowns, prom dresses, and bridesmaids and flower girl dresses, offered in sizes from 0 to 28. Customers should note that nothing in the store can be ordered…everything available is in stock. However, new inventory, in addition to the 4,000 gowns already in stock, is purchased regularly from suppliers, which can occur at auctions or from store closures, as you have learned. Alterations are not done on-site, but the store can refer customers to local seamstresses, if needed. You can walk out of the store with your dress the same day you shop, with no worries about incorrect or late orders! All sales are final, however, with no refunds or returns. After a less than pleasant experience shopping for a gown for her 2016 marriage, Humphreys was determined to find and offer a better way for women to find their own gowns. “Either brides pay a high price for a high-end experience or they pay a low price for a low-end experience. We wanted to deliver a high-end experience to every bride regardless of the price of their dress,” she says. She continues, “Tossing ideas around, John said it would be fun to buy an old church and call it “Going to the Chapel”. In November, 2016, we were heading out to get lunch in 50 GO LOCAL

Springfield and decided to stop at Eco Building Bargains to see their latest arrivals. On the way, the dress shop idea came up and we realized that the building does not have to be a church, but could be modified to look like one. Upon entering Eco Building we saw two large church entry doors. We talked with the staff and they found 5-6 other pieces from the same church, which was First Church in Amherst, built by Emily Dickinson’s brother. I told John we can’t buy all this since we do not even have a building to put them in. Within minutes of leaving we received a call that someone else was interested in purchasing the church items, so John gave him our credit card number over the phone. We were suddenly the proud owners of lots of church architectural materials. That same day, as we were driving through a snow storm along Enfield Street, we saw a “For Sale” sign on the Moore Rug Company building, and made an offer, which was accepted. On the upside, it was spacious, bright, had showcase windows and lots of storage, but on the downside, it was extremely outdated and needed a complete overhaul to transform it into a dress shop. Within that same 24 hour period I went online and found a bridal store in Rhode Island, which was closing after 58 years. I called them and they were interested in selling us their entire store’s contents. Thus was the beginning of a real ‘rags to riches’ story.” Currently, the store is open Wednesday through Saturday. Bridal shopping is by appointment only, with bookings available Monday through Saturday. All COVID health protocols are being followed. It was a winter wonderland driving to our ceremony! Everything was coated in a fresh blanket of snow. It felt like Christmas morning. The way Nick looked into my eyes during our vows is something I will never forget. He was so sincere and loving; I wish I could’ve stayed in that moment forever. When we went outside of the church for photos after the ceremony, random cars were honking at us and people were yelling “Congratulations!” Popping champagne in the car after our ceremony for “our first toast as Mr. and Mrs.” It was fun to have some time alone and take in the feeling of being newly married! THEME: Navy blue and metallics/magic in the moonlight/celestial BEST ADVICE: Don’t get caught up in overthinking decisions. Just stick to your gut and go with it. Don’t have high expectations, just keep optimistic so you don’t think “shoulda, coulda, woulda” later on. And remember that it all comes down to your marriage -the rest is just bells and whistles! We highly recommend a first look! We saved so much time taking photos with our wedding party and parents before the ceremony/reception. Experiencing “post wedding grief” is a thing and completely normal! Sometimes I would find myself wishing that everything had lasted longer and I could’ve taken in all the details that I worked so hard on. But I got to marry the love of my life and that was the greatest takeaway and what it’s all about in the first place. HONEYMOON: We took a mini-moon and stayed at an AirBnB in Cape Cod in early November 2020. We hope to eventually travel to Disney World and Turks and Caicos. GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 55

GOLOCALMAGAZINES.COM 57
OTHER/NOTES: We originally set a date of October 10, 2020 to get married at the Springfield Country Club in West Springfield, MA. Little did we know, the universe had other plans for us. Ashlee’s dad was diagnosed with cancer in 2016, and in the recent months leading up to our (unplanned) wedding day, his strength had been quickly declining. Her dream of having her father walk her down the aisle and dance with her on her wedding day needed to become a reality. Fast. We had a socially distant visit with Ashlee’s mother on a Sunday afternoon, indicating that time was of the essence. We decided to plan our wedding for the following weekend, in just 6 days. The amount of love and support we received to make our day possible was absolutely incredible. People offered help in any way they could; from building a dance floor and an arbor, organizing a car “parade,” our jeweler allowing us to borrow wedding bands, Ashlee’s bridal boutique letting her borrow her dress, flowers done in 48 hours, our gym coach became our officiant for the day, wedding decorations donated, meals prepared, a wedding planner who wore several hats throughout the day (DJ, decorator, bouquet holder, dress adjuster, waitress…to name a few), and a kick-ass photographer and videographer to capture it all. With our families by our side, and our friends honking and waving, we could not have asked for a better way to start our lives together. MEMORABLE MOMENT: Hands down, Ashlee’s dad walking her down the aisle. BEST WEDDING ADVICE: Enjoy every moment – take time just the two of you to sneak away. Take it all in. Go slow and treasure the whole day and all of the love around you. Plan and execute your wedding for yourself and your partner: you only get this day once. It doesn’t matter where, when, the weather – when you finally get the opportunity to marry the person that was put on this planet to love you, nothing else matters. Just you, them, and the rest of your lives ahead of you.
